Champion Hereford Steer and Grand Champion Land of Lincoln over all breeds.
Sold for $18,500 through the Governor’s Auction. Congratulations to Kyle Walsh and the entire Walsh Family. We've always claimed to have the deepest, highest-quality set of Hereford steers you'll find, and this steer truly illustrates that point. He was the last steer chosen from over 25 Hereford steers sold privately last fall. Sired by Purple Milsap 45S and out of Purple Daisey 32S (Devo x Purple Camille 3M), he is proof that elite genetics, coupled with a great environment, can prevail in the end! Special thanks to Steve Walsh for all your hard work and a decade of loyalty to our program. Grand Polled Hereford (Open) and Res. ® Your Best Choice of Colostrum products... because they are made from Real All Natural Maternal Bovine Colostrum 1. Immunologically Potent - CCT products deliver >100g of globulin protein in a single replacer dose, 95% of which is IgG1...CCT Gold (>120g); CCT Silver (Balanced Immunity & Energy) (>100g); CCT Bronze (High Calorie) (>100g). 2. High Energy - Rich in natural colostral fat, the main fuel newborn calves need to defend their body temperature.
Calf’s Choice Total ® can be used to supplement or replace colostrum in beef calves
3. Safe - Free of Johne’s, Leukosis, Salmonella and other pathogens. 4. Cost Effective - Lower cost per gram of globulin protein absorbed into the calf’s blood... substantially lower than products (artificial recipes) made from blood and other non-colostrum ingredients.
DeWFMPped by Veterinary Practioners to be the trusted Gold Standard in Calf Care & Colostrum Management Manufactured by: The Saskatoon Colostrum Co. Ltd. Saskatoon, SK, Canada & Laramie, WY, USA
Calf’s Choice Total ®
SAFE, POTENT, CONVENIENT, EASY TO USE
Convenient to use - As easy to use as 1, 2, 3: add hot water, mix, feed. Complete - CCT products contain all the globulin proteins, colostral fat, growth factors, anti-microbials, and other nutrients found in mother’s natural colostrum. Balanced - Contain the same 95% IgG1: 5% IgG2 balance found in mother’s colostrum, that helps fight scours and pneumonia. In contrast, products made from blood or whey contain only 50% IgG1 and 50% IgG2 ; an imbalance of these important disease fighting molecules may compromise protection. Stable - A 3 year shelf life when stored at room temperature and kept sealed.

WalkerArticle couresy of Dr. Paul Walker, Professor of Animal Science
Youth and Showmanship For many, showmanship provides a chance for the youth of agriculture to showcase their skills and capabilities as showmen. On the surface, it undoubtedly is. Showmanship places a focus on its participants' presentation of themselves. It is a focus which breeds confidence, superiority, dedication and an insatiable hunger to simply raise the bar. The attentive care that the agriculture industry extends toward the upbringing of its youth differentiates it from other industries and truly makes it stand apart. Countless hours are dedicated to the education, the skill development and the enrichment of moral conduct of agriculture's youth through commendable organizations such as 4-H, FFA and the individual junior associations found within specific species and breeds of livestock. This environment nurtures the seeds of ambition found in every youth which, when paired with a love for agriculture and the country lifestyle, paves the way for improvement and growth within the agriculture industry. These seeds are planted at a young age in the hearts of Little Big Dogs. These children, too young to compete in the arena on show day like their older siblings and friends, know no fear of sharp teeth and heavy hooves. With determined attitudes seemingly too big for their little bodies, they set out to do anything and everything they can with a fierce loyalty and dedication found only in Little Big Dogs. Because if Mommy and Daddy can handle the cows, pigs, goats, etc., then so can they. Showmanship is their chance to prove that. It's their chance to learn and improve upon their natural talents through experience. But of course showmanship isn't only for the Little Big Dogs, though arguably we are all Little Big Dogs at heart. The older participants need a chance to show off their skills, too. On a deeper level than showcasing skills and abilities is the understanding that showmanship, along with showing, brings about an apprehension of what competition truly is. It brings
about the reality that sometimes it just isn't enough to be perfect at what you are supposed to do. More often than not, not making mistakes and doing everything perfectly just doesn't cut it. Being the best takes more than merely following the rules and standards that are set for you. It simply takes more than that. Let an understanding of political and social dogmas inside and outside the show arena take root. Participants who perceive that every moment spent in the public's eye is a moment spent on display and who understand the implications of that are the ones who become the best. They understand the need to put an image of not only themselves, but of their farm and their associations out into the world. More importantly, they realize that they are the ones expelling the image of the agriculture industry's future. The strength it takes to hold a stubborn animal, the flexibility attained in dealing with each animal's unique quirks, the poise kept under the scrutiny of judges' eyes, and the endurance needed to do all this for as long as it takes all translates into real world skills needed to survive in any industry. Through the nurturing of these skills, showmanship showcases not only skill and capability. It showcases the future of the American agriculture industry. It's a future strong enough to survive hardships and flexible enough to make changes when needed for as long as is needed with poise and virtue. Columnist Note: In lieu of my article for this issue we are printing an article my daughter Sam wrote for the Brownfield Network. This past summer Sam spent a week in Jefferson City, MO. with Cyndi Young-Puyear, Farm Director and Ag Operations Manager for Brownfield Network, the largest agriculture radio network in the U.S. Each summer Brownfield Network co-sponsors showmanship competitions around the country and we are most appreciative for their support of agriculture’s young people.

Teaching Children the Financial Facts of Life By default, parents are usually the primary source of a financial education. However, many young people may receive allowances—or even sizable inheritances—without a sound base of knowledge in saving, budgeting, investing and financial planning. To help the children in your life develop a responsible attitude about money, it might help to consider these points: Be a Role Model There is a significant relationship between the way children view money and your own spending habits. Instead of viewing money and personal finance as a forbidden topic, discuss your own financial goals and plans. The level and amount of information shared is up to you, but bring the younger generation into at least a portion of your plans. How you deal with money issues—from the monthly bills to planning the family vacation of a lifetime—are important and long-lasting lessons about money management and the value of money. Encourage Savings and Investments One of the simplest ways to encourage a responsible attitude about money is to encourage children to save. This could include designating a portion of a child’s allowance to a savings account, or making gifts of cash directly to an account in their name. Discuss account statements together, and stress the concept of “paying yourself first” with dedicated, regular deposits. For younger children, set modest, attainable savings goals. For older children, encourage the development of a long-term savings plan for the purchase of a large-ticket item like a computer or car. Consider an occasional “matching grant” to encourage regular deposits and help keep goals visible. Take the time to explain basic investment types such as cash instruments, stocks and bonds. Make investing interesting by engaging in conversation about companies that provide popular children’s products such as toys or clothing.
Develop a Sense of Financial Empowerment Developing responsible spending habits means encouraging well-thought-out choices. Guide and advise rather than dictate how money should be saved and spent. Keep goals visible with pictures or create charts that plot the growth of funds needed. Take children on window-shopping trips to compare prices and products and adopt the mind set that every trip to a store is an exercise leading to a potential purchase. To limit impulse buying, consider instituting a rule that prices and products are compared at a minimum of three locations. Give Unto Others Involve children in your financial decisions regarding philanthropy. Discuss the merits of gift applications you may have received and weigh the advantages and limits of each. Explain the tax advantages of charitable giving but, at the same time, stress the altruistic goals of giving. Even a contribution to a canned food drive or the creation of a holiday basket for a needy family can grow into a family-wide event. By helping children contribute time or money to a charitable cause, you can teach them that money is important in ways other than personal consumption. Developing a sound knowledge of basic financial practices can often go a long way toward helping the children in your life achieve lifelong financial security. Matthew E. Flushing with Sexed Semen With the appropriate application, understanding and knowledge, the use of sexed semen in conventional embryo transfer can be a valuable tool for the beef producer. Up to this point, the use of sexed semen with conventional embryo transfer has been limited – but as the availability and understanding of the use of sexed semen is growing, it is a reproductive tool that is increasing in both interest and application. One of the reasons it has been limited has been due to the availability of sexed semen on popular sires. In the dairy industry where sexed semen has been most prevalent, elite bulls with high demand have not had sexed semen available. In the beef industry, only a small percentage of sires are available. Even when there is Sexed Semen available, it is predominantly packaged in a concentration suitable for AI, not ET. Secondly, there has been common perception that sexed semen cannot be successfully utilized with conventional embryo transfer. Both availability and understanding of the utilization of sexed semen is growing rapidly. How do you determine if the use of sexed semen in conventional embryo transfer is a wise choice in your program? Most importantly, one must determine if there is a significant difference in the value of the male and female offspring. If not, un-sexed semen will provide the best results at the lowest cost. Fertilization rate with sexed semen will likely be decreased. The number of viable embryos will be reduced by 10 to 50 percent when compared to unsexed controls. There are two main reasons for this decrease. First, the semen has been through the sorting process, which adds additional stress to the sperm cell. Secondly, low dose inseminations are being utilized. Conventional straws contain 15 to 35 million, while sexed semen straws prepared for embryo transfer contain 5 million. Embryo programs averaging 6 transferrable embryos per collection would likely be reduced to 3 to 5.4 embryos per collection. However, one would expect 90 percent of the resulting embryos to be of the desired sex. An important point to realize is that even if you decrease the number of embryos you receive, you may have more of the desired sex. If you were looking for more females and decide to use sexed semen in flushing, you may take your embryo yield per flush from six to four. Thus, you should expect 3.6

female embryos as opposed to 3.0 with unsexed semen (90 percent vs. 50 percent sex ratio). Even if you produced less heifer embryos, one still may be ahead. This reduction may seem significant – however, the ability to decrease gestation costs of the unwanted sex maybe much more significant. If one has a limited number of resources or recipients, the opportunity costs of having half of your calves being the unwanted sex is high. In these situations, the most cost effective means is to eliminate the unwanted sex at fertilization or in the embryo dish. Equally important to the decision, is the management of using sexed semen, the handling of the semen, insemination timing and insemination dose. Trans Ova Genetics recommends using five million count straws and inseminating with one straw at 12 hours and two straws at 24 hours post standing heat. Semen is often available as two million or five million count straws. It is important to make sure that the semen has been prepared for embryo transfer purposes. Because these straws have much lower sperm numbers, the technique is of much greater importance than conventional semen. AI equipment must be able to accommodate Ÿ cc straws. In order to ensure proper insemination timing, estrus detection surveying time must be increased as to determine when the donor was in first standing heat. Donor selection is also an important component to consider. Not only does one need to select donors that have a difference in gender value of their offspring, but donor selection should include consideration of fertility. In general, heifers and young fertile donors will respond well with sexed semen. This is not an application to attempt on donors that are geriatric, problem breeders, or have provided poor results or reduced fertilization rates in previous embryo transfer attempts. A commonly asked question is if straws of previously frozen semen can be thawed, sexed, and utilized in embryo transfer. While this is widely used in IVF where limited sperm numbers are required, it is NOT possible in conventional embryo transfer. In IVF, around half of the donors have oocytes fertilized with sexed semen. This is because there is no decrease in embryo production. While there is a decrease with conventional embryo transfer, and therefore a decrease in application, it is still an extremely valuable tool with the appropriate situations and management techniques.

The Miniature Hereford Show & Seedstock Source
x Due to a few too many birthdays and some health issues, xKenny & Ali have decided to offer the KP herd and it’s KAP genetics for private treaty sale to the
public beginning September 15, 2010. We have had the good fortune to produce the KAP genetics, the most dominant blood lines in the Miniature Hereford industry at this time. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a part or all of the herd that has produced the finest bulls, the most dominant blood lines and is the all-time leading show breeder in the Miniature Hereford industry. We have sold over 30 show bulls & heifers that have been either Grand or Reserve Champions at major shows in the USA, Canada & Australia. x
We will be selling singles & packages from show quality to meat producers.
Please take a minute to visit our “Ranch on the Web for more details & a listing of cattle.
