Tim Dolcini | Canyon Gem Livestock | Jerome, ID “These patches are impressive. We often patch cattle at 18 days post breed to catch return heats. Patches on most cows that pass over are still firmly attached when we preg check at 50-plus days. Even 30 days later you still have to do some pulling to get them off.”

Bryan Vay | Rimrock Production, Inc. | Giddings, TX “Your patches are the only brand on the market that work, and we have tried them all. Send us another 400! Tree limbs and all, your patches work really well on our cows in the pastures.” April 2019 • theshowcircuit.com

AJCA

SHOW SEASON BEGINS By Baylee Mangrum

How about that weather!! I hope you are all having a good month so far. I am Baylee Mangrum the eighteen-year-old daughter of Bryan and Tracie Mangrum of Marmaduke, AR. Also serving as the 2019 secretary for the AJCA. We have just begun to start our show season for the year so that is exciting for us all! I will be exhibiting Charolais, Charolais-influenced as well as Maine-Anjou and Maine-influenced cattle. To say I’m ready is an understatement. It has been a busy first few semesters for me in college, but if it weren’t that way, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. My first show of the year was the Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo in February. I exhibited a Charolais heifer which won the junior calf champion division, we’re excited to see where she’s going to go in the future. We also have Area Cattlemen’s meetings coming up in the month of March. I will be attending Area 9 meeting on March 5

in Jonesboro, and I can’t wait to see everyone. I also encourage you all to attend your respective area meetings as it contains a lot of important information on how to maintain your herds with vaccinations, salts and minerals, marketing and management. Also, at all the area meetings, the Cattlewomen’s Association will be having their annual pie and cake auction. This is a great benefit as it helps them in funding scholarships. The AJCA has a slough of cattle shows coming up in the month of March. Even if you don’t have cattle, I encourage you all to come out and support our youth that are the future of the Cattlemen’s and Cattlewomen’s Associations. Coming from one of the youths that is still actively showing, I know that it means a lot when we have support coming from the older generations. I hope you all have a great month and a great rest of the year.

Same Old Bad Deals

By Wes Ishmael

Fact-based information may be power, and the truth will always win out, but there’s an amazing amount of twaddle to sift through in the meantime. Maybe it’s ignorance of logic and science. Perhaps it’s just the mind-numbing volume of words and ideas bombarding us all day, every day. Whatever the combination of reasons, I continue to be awed by how much apparent sincere consideration so many seem to give to ludicrous notions. “Transformation to healthy diets by 2050 will require substantial dietary shifts. Global consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes will have to double, and consumption of foods such as red meat and sugar will have to be re-

duced by more than 50%,” according to Walter Willett, MD, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “A diet rich in plant-based foods and with fewer animal source foods confers both improved health and environmental benefits.” Willett is co-author of the highly publicized and dubious Food in The Anthropocene: the EAT-Lancet Commission on Healthy Diets From Sustainable Food Systems. As his comment suggests, recommendations in the EAT-Lancet report are aimed at a dramatic shift in diet, which would, in their opinion, also shift sustainability of global food systems. Think here of things tied to debate

surrounding climate change, such as Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG). The recommendations are chock-full of sketchy data and unfounded conclusions. As Katie Rose McCullough, Ph.D., MPH, Director of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs for the North American Meat Institute noted, “Health for people and the planet are two complex issues that demand comprehensive solutions across a range of stakeholders. Food can certainly play a role and following sciencebased dietary guidance is an important step toward improving people’s health. “However, the EAT-Lancet Commission’s recommendations differ dramati-

cally from consensus nutrition science and U.S. dietary guidance. Americans consume the recommended amount of meat and poultry, which provide nutrition that cannot simply be replaced by another food. In fact, the report’s ‘fad diet’ approach that recommends people radically reduce or even eliminate meat from their diets could have substantial damaging public health consequences.” Likewise, in an overview of the report, Nina Teicholz, Executive Director of The Nutrition Coalition, a non-profit group that promotes evidence-based nutrition policy, wrote, “This report is disturbing on a number of fronts. Most importantly, its diet lacks the backing of any rigorous science. Indeed, it does not cite a single clinical trial to support the idea that a vegan/vegetarian diet promotes good health or fights disease. Instead EATLancet relies entirely on a type of science that is weak and demonstrably unreliable, called epidemiology. This kind of science has been shown to be accurate, when tested in rigorous clinical trials, only 0-20% of the time. One wouldn’t bet on a football team with such poor odds, so why bet on the public health this way?” Never mind the report’s environmental evaluation. “The report also ignores key facts about food and climate,” McCullough says. “U.S. farmers and ranchers produce more meat and poultry than ever before, using fewer animals, less land and water, and with a smaller environmental

footprint. As a result, animal agriculture accounts for just 4% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Zeroing in on meat production and consumption as a climate change ‘silver bullet’ solution distracts from the many changes that are needed across various sectors to create meaningful improvements.” According to Beef Sustainability Facts from the Beef Board, based on the most recent beef Lifecycle Assessment, U.S. beef production accounts for 2% of GHG emissions in this country: “U.S. beef has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world, 10-50 times lower than some nations.” A Raw New Deal Speaking of which, the Green New Deal resolution introduced by Congress in February targets climate change via a shift to what they term clean energy by 2030. “A Green New Deal is about jobs, and it is about justice,” said Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), co-sponsor of the resolution. “It would be the greatest

blue-collar jobs program in a generation and repair the historic oppression of frontline and vulnerable communities that have born the worst burdens of our fossil fuel economy, all while saving the planet. Our Green New Deal resolution outlines an historic 10-year mobilization that will mitigate climate emissions and build climate resiliency…” Among other things, the resolution presents a plan aimed at the U.S. achieving 100% of its power demand, “through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources; build or upgrade to energy-efficient, distributed and ‘smart’ power grids; upgrade all existing U.S. buildings and build new buildings, to achieve maximum energy efficiency…” The list goes on. Of course, that would mean, among other things, shutting down virtually all coal, oil, and natural gas electric plants, eliminating millions of jobs in the process, according to The Heartland Institute (THI). The organization is one of the world’s leading free-market think tanks. Its mission is to discover, develop and promote free-market solutions to social

and economic problems. “Justifying the need for the ‘Green New Deal’ on the alarmist and unscientific reports by the International Panel on Climate Change would turn America into a socialist state because of a lie,” says Jay Lehr, THI Science Director. “Despite what this resolution states, human activity is not the ‘dominant cause of observed climate change over the past century.’ Sea levels are not rising at a dangerous and accelerated rate. Storms and droughts and wildfires are not more frequent, nor are they more severe than in even recent history. And the truth is that the United States, by embracing market-driven forces in energy production, is seeing carbon dioxide emissions fall while that of our more-socialist friends overseas is on the rise.” “There are numerous socialist policies mandated under the ‘Green New Deal’ that would harm tens of millions Americans and drive up the national debt to unsustainable heights,” says Justin Haskins Executive Editor at The Heartland Institute. “Just some of those policies include single-payer health care, a national tuition-free college program, a promise to provide every American with ‘healthy food,’ a national basic income program, a universal promise for housing and ‘economic security,’ and a plan to ‘upgrade’ every single building in the country, including every American’s home. This isn’t just radical socialism, this is madness.” Just the Facts, Please “It seems like every week or so, another group releases another proposal or call to ‘Do Something’ about climate change,” says Colin Woodall, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). “Unfortunately, many of these proposals are often lacking in specifics,

which makes it very hard for us to develop substantive responses. Hopefully, our new Cost-Benefit Principles (CBP) will help the producers we represent—as well as millions of other concerned American citizens—make better-informed decisions on important issues like climate change.” Indeed. The Cost-Benefit Principles for Climate Change Policy Proposals are straightforward and commonsense. *Explain, specifically, proposed policy changes. *Estimate as specifically as possible how much each of these policy changes would cost taxpayers, consumers of specific energy sources, food consumers, and specific targeted industries/business owners. *Estimate how much CO2 and other GHGs would be reduced if the proposed policy change was fully implemented. *Estimate how much global temperatures would be changed by the same date if the proposed policy change was fully implemented. *If any of policy proposals are intended to reduce the consumption of beef, detail specifically how much additional land must be converted to crop production in order to fill the protein-intake gap, i.e., the difference between average protein intake via current beef consumption and what would have to be produced and consumed to keep protein-intake levels consistent under an all-or-mostly vegetarian or vegan diet… *Show all of the math for estimated costs, emissions, average global temperature, and land conversion data. “These are very straightforward questions that any concerned citizen or reporter should be asking anyone who proposes new climate-change policy,” Woodall says. “What specifically are you proposing, how much will it cost, how much will it affect global temperatures down the road, and how did you arrive at those numbers? Seems like anyone who is proposing billions or trillions of dollars’ worth of policy changes should be happy to answer those questions. Yet for some reason, few currently are.”

Woodall points out U.S. beef producers have already made strides on environmental issues like climate change, such as producing the same amount of beef with 33% fewer cattle, compared to 1977. “Despite all the progress we’ve made on the environmental front in recent decades, some policymakers still seem to think targeting U.S. beef producers and consumers will make a huge impact on global emissions,” Woodall explains. “That’s why we drafted our Principles—to give the folks who are proposing new public policies the opportunity to outline the specific costs and estimated benefits of their proposals.” Sign up for Wes’ free daily market podcast at www.cattlecurrent.com

PROFESSOR to PRODUCER

By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting

BRINGING THE NEXT GENERATION HOME As a Professor, one of my assignments was to advise students not only on curricular choices but, also regarding career aspirations. During my first visit with each student we always discussed their preference for a career. In many instances the student wanted to go home to farm but either realized on their own or had been told by their parents there was not enough farm income to support the students return to the farm in four years. Maybe the student could return in 20-30 years when the parents were ready to retire. Over the years I observed far too many students making curricular choices to support (in their minds) a temporary off-farm job that would eventually be left to return to the farm.

accustomed to higher net income, set hours of employment, weekends off, frequent entertainment options, and (most importantly) a spouse and children who may not share the aspiration of returning to the farm, living poor to build equity in the business, little to no time off, working weekends, putting in long hours during planting, harvest and calving/farrowing/lambing seasons. Returning to farm 5 to 10 years following graduation seldom occurs; and, when it does occur, I have observed far too many divorces. Sometimes the lifestyle change is more than a marriage can accommodate. There are exceptions. I am aware of several and these folks who have made returning to the farm a success are true champions.

Here is one of the problems with that scenario. If a young person does not return to the farm immediately following graduation, she/he never will---at least not as a full-time career choice. They may return in 30 years following retirement as a hobby/lifestyle farmer but not in 5-10 years to farm as a career choice. Young people who return to the farm immediately following graduation (whether it is graduation from high school, community college or an university) tend to live poor for several years putting most of their income back into the farm, building equity. Living poor following college is pretty easy because 1) a student is use to living without much income and 2) a student has not developed a lifestyle incumbent upon time off, high income, etc.

So, how can the next generation return to the farm immediately following graduation when Mom and Dad are too young to retire. In most cases, it is not by expanding the grain farm-there is just not enough farm land available (at least an affordable rent or purchase price). The answer is usually expanding or adding a livestock component. Adding a 2500 head swine finishing building or a 1000 head cattle finishing, mono-slope structure will provide enough income for a son or daughter to return to the farm operation. This form of horizontal expansion has worked for numerous families and can be utilized by many more. A $50:cattle profit will provide a son or daughter a living wage of $50,000:year. A $10:pig profit with 2 turns:year:building also, can provide a living wage of $50,000:year. Most students upon graduation will start at

Young people who enter the non-farm work force upon graduation become

a yearly salary between $40,000 and $50,000. Other innovative opportunities that allow young people to return to the farm include various forms of vertical integration. For a dairy it may include on-farm cheese manufacturing and sales; for a livestock operation it may include niche market sales of beef, pork or lamb advertised as locally grown, raised without hormones, corn fed, grass fed, etc. In each of these scenarios a primary responsibility for the returning son or daughter is marketing of the product(s). And, marketing is a full-time job. There are options that will allow young people to return to the farm immediately following graduation. The financial risks of these options can be high but the rewards can be great. There is compromise for those people who are not willing to assume great financial risk. They can take the path I followed: a rewarding off-farm career, living on a lifestyle farm, raising two daughters in the show cattle world, teaching them the rural/conservative Christian values that often times (not always, not only, not necessarily) only country living provides. Editors Note: The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Show Circuit Magazine. Olivia Gerloff Age: 16 Hometown: Bland, Missouri

Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: Being on the wash rack, because I hate wet feet.

Species and breeds of livestock you show: I show Angus and Simmental Cattle.

What do you like to do outside of the barn/show ring: When I’m not in the barn or at a show I like to judge and look at livestock, hangout with friends and family, go shopping and travel.

Siblings names/ages: Dakota, 20 years old

Favorite book or author: Temple Grandin

What is your favorite show and why? There is nothing quite like the feeling of walking down the ramp onto the green chips in Freedom Hall. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. That is why NAILE in Louisville, KY is easily my favorite show.

Favorite movie: 8 Seconds

What is your favorite show memory and why? My favorite show memory was at the 2018 American Royal winning the Jr. Angus show. I can remember walking into class thinking if I was in the top 3 I would be doing good. I ended up winning my class, then my division, then overall. It will be a memory I will never forget! Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: My all-time favorite show animal is Hillard Pride Ever 706. She is an Angus heifer out of Primo and her dam is a Bismarck cow. I traveled all over the country this past year with this heifer and claimed many titles with her. I am excited to have her as a donor cow for our program and I can’t wait to see what all she produces. Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? I use the same show stick at every show.

My favorite motto is “We’re here to kick butt and chew bubblegum, and we’re all out of bubblegum.” -Tyler Campbell Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring? Showing cattle truly takes a village. I would like to thank my mom and dad, my brother, Brad Hillard, Justin Willard, and Sam Wallace for all their help with my success in the showring. I truly could not do it without them.

Things to Consider After the Flood At press time in late March, the losses from the extreme flooding and blizzard affecting Nebraska and surrounding areas could only be estimated, but $1 billion is reportedly the best guess. The fallout will probably continue for years as some farmers and ranchers say they will never be able to get back to the point where they were before the storms hit. As well, as the flooding moves downstream into other Midwestern states, the tally will continue to rise. Due to the historic nature of these storms, there are probably people who have never been faced with such a catastrophe. With that in mind, we humbly offer this collection of tips from various state Extension sources on all the many things producers have to deal with in the aftermath.

LIVESTOCK CARE

DISEASE CONTROL

PASTURELAND

If your fields or farm buildings have been flooded, take special precautions against flood-related accidents or diseases in poultry and livestock. Give animals extra care, particularly if they have been stranded by floodwater, and have been off regular feeding schedules. Keep fields clear of harmful debris, and clean buildings as soon as possible. In addition, watch for signs of flood-related diseases, such as lameness, fever, difficulty breathing, muscle contractions or swelling of shoulder, chest, back, neck or throat. Be prepared to contact a veterinarian if you spot trouble.

Following a flood, there may be danger of infectious diseases in livestock, but unless serious outbreaks of infection have occurred recently, the situation should not be alarming. Observe these precautions: Where large numbers of animals are assembled, watch for any indication of infectious diseases such as pneumonia, foot rot or leptospirosis. These diseases are more likely to occur where cattle are crowded on wet ground and where horn flies and houseflies are abundant. Promptly report any sign of disease to a local, state or federal veterinarian. Contact a veterinarian about vaccinating animals for immunity from flood-related diseases such as anthrax, blackleg and swine erysipelas.

Standing water may have ruined some pastures. Lack of adequate forage could force animals to eat poisonous plants. Remove fallen wild cherry limbs from pastures to prevent livestock poisoning. Before restocking flooded pastures, remove debris, especially along fence lines and in corners. Livestock could be injured from pieces of barbed wire, sharp metal and trash.

Dispose of animal carcasses promptly. If there is no rendering company operating nearby, burn or bury carcasses deeply in a place approved by your local soil conservation office.

Well Water Safety After Flooding (Nebraska Extension)

If your private drinking water well has been impacted by flood water, your water supply may have been contaminated with pollutants carried in the flood water. In addition, wells can be contaminated by surface water runoff even if the surrounding area is not flooded. Wells at greatest risk of contamination from flood water or surface water runoff include: • Wells located in well pits. • Dug wells or any wells that do not have a watertight casing. • Wells that do not have watertight caps. • Wells that lack a grout seal in the annular space. • Wells that were submerged with flood water or surface water runoff. If you think your private drinking water well was impacted by flood water: • Do not use the water for cooking, drinking, or brushing teeth until laboratory analysis confirms it is safe. • Contact a licensed well contractor. The con tractor should: o Inspect the well. o Clean out any debris or sediment that entered the well. o Disinfect the well with shock chlorina tion. The system must be flushed (three to four hours) after the disinfec tant has been retained undisturbed in the system for six to eight hours to remove any debris and flush contami nates from the water system before testing for drinkability. • Then, contact a certified testing laboratory and tell them you want to have your private water supply tested for bacteria. They will provide a test kit with detailed instructions. • Don’t use the water from your well until the laboratory has informed you that it is safe and free of bacterial contamination. It may be necessary to repeat the disinfection and test ing process several times before the well is free of contamination. • If flood water came close to your well (100 feet or less) but did not reach the well, have your water tested as a precaution. For more detailed information, visit the agency’s website at flood.unl.edu/well-water.

Flood Recovery Checklists for Farmsteads

(North Dakota Extension Service)

Farm Buildings • First, check a building’s structural strength. If the building has moved, shifted or twisted, it may not be safe to enter. Check if the roof and walls are straight or bowed. Check the foundation, sill, plate, roof and walls for damage. Look for connections or joints that have separated. If the building has extensive damage, tearing it down and starting with a new building probably will be less expensive than attempting to repair the damaged structure. • After the water subsides, clean and dry out the building as much as possible. This can include using a sump pump, mops, brooms and brushes, and fans and/or natural ventilation. • Floors probably will be covered with layers of silt and mud. This will need to be removed, and that is easier to do before the mud or silt dries. • When the wood is dry, inspect laminated woods, such as plywood, that have been immersed in water to be sure laminations still are bonded together firmly. Check nails to determine whether they are secure.

Electrical Equipment • Animals housed in mechanically ventilated buildings may need to be moved to prevent acute exposure to hazardous gases. • Inspect wiring and plumbing for damage. All breaker panel boards, breakers, fuses, disconnect switches, controllers, receptacles, switches, light fixtures and electric heaters that have been submerged generally must be replaced. Check with an electrician. • Do not turn on the power to a flooded structure until it has been inspected and a licensed electrical contractor or electrical inspector has determined it is safe. • All electrical equipment, electric motors and other similar equipment such as appliances that have been submerged need to be reconditioned by the original manufacturer or its approved representative, or replaced. Electrical wiring may require replacement, depending on the type of wire or cable and its use. Splices and terminations must be checked to make sure they comply with the National Electrical Code.

• If the building was insulated, the wet insulation must be removed. Floodwaters often will leave absorbent material with a foul odor that is difficult to remove. When checking the insulation, expect it to be wet above the high-water level because of the material’s wicking action. • If the interior wall sheathing is drywall, it will need to be replaced. Usually the interior sheathing in the out-buildings will be wood, which can be dried. After the sheathing and insulation are removed, inspect the wall studs, sills and plates for structural damage. Damaged components will need to be repaired or replaced. • Thoroughly clean milking equipment, grain augers, ventilation fans and other items that were immersed in the floodwaters to remove grit or other contaminants. • Clean, dry and lightly oil all metal tools to prevent rusting. Power tools with motors need to be reconditioned by the original manufacturer or its approved representative, or replaced. Floodwaters leave deposits in motors that may cause electrical faults, creating a safety hazard.

When was YOUR last shot?

Finally, make sure your tetanus shot is up-to-date as well as anybody helping you clear out debris. April 2019 • theshowcircuit.com

Helping Your Help Feed Correctly By Sharla Ishmael

Tips from show families on leaving feeding instructions for your help. It’s always a fear when you have to be gone for a few days – what if something goes wrong at the barn while you’re gone? For instance, you’re gone to San Antonio and come back to find your Houston steer somehow gained a ton of weight even though he’s supposed to be on a holding diet. Or maybe your part-time helper didn’t notice the water was out in one of the pens and your show heifers are sick. Maybe one pen got the wrong feed and one of your best animals is bloated. All kinds of mix ups can happen even if your part-time help may have the best intentions. Feeding show animals is part science, part art and a bit of OCD-level attention to detail helps. So, we asked our friends and Facebook followers what they do to make sure the right feed gets to the right animals. Here are some ideas that might help you the next time you have to go to a weekend show:

Tip No. 1. Pre-mix and Measure One of the common strategies our experts use is to go ahead and fill up buckets with the correct feed so all the helper has to do is put it out in the right pen.

Tip No. 2 – Using a White Erase Board with Pen Layout Both the Worrells and our own Mackenzi and John Grauer of Ohio, use a whiteboard to leave instructions when they are travelling. Both of them also draw the pen layout so there is no confusion about who gets what. The photo below shows the Grauer’s board from a recent trip. “We use a white board in the barn and draw out the lots, pens, barn, etc. and write down detailed notes for feeding, including the note TO MAKE SURE WATER TANKS ARE FULL and TO CHECK GATE LATCHES BEFORE LEAVING,” Mackenzi explains. “If possible, we combine cattle into groups so there is less buckets to feed. We also pre-mix the feed in buckets and label them.” The Worrell white board is similar – feeding instructions divided by pen to match the barn layout. “Our white board is also numbered to match the numbers we have on our pens/gates. The board also includes the

Erin Worrell is a show mom from Texas – mom to Pecos, our blogger on SC2Day in February. The photo at left is what they left their helper to feed the three steers and one heifer while they were at the show in Fort Worth. “I’m totally obsessive when it comes to leaving instructions for helpers. Partly because my husband, Casey, travels so much and he likes to have updates regularly on what, how and when we did things while he is gone,” Erin explains. “And when I’m gone from home, we’re going to want the same kind of info from anyone helping us back at home. That’s the main reason I set things up so easily for our helpers, so we know things are easy and ready. “The secondary reason is that if something goes wrong, I don’t want our help to think they should have known something that is second nature to us. We don’t always have someone helping who ‘knows’ livestock or what to look for or what should be something to report to us. So, we want to remove as many barriers as possible. And finally, I want someone who will eagerly agree to feed for us next time because we make it easy on them,” she adds. April 2019 • theshowcircuit.com

animal’s name and a short description (black and white steer, red with white face, etc.) this helps in case something gets into a different pen,” Erin adds. “We pre-measure as much as we possibly can and then stack everything together for each animal. When possible, we pre-mix into colored buckets; each calf gets a colored bucket and all are stacked together. The color of the bucket is written on the dry erase board with the number of the pen. Sometimes I even write the pen number on the inside of the bucket with the dry erase marker or a sharpie. “A set of instructions are typed and printed next to the white board just in case someone is unsure of what goes where,” Erin says. “This list includes general reminders such as check water troughs for manure, feed barn cats, turn on fans in morning and off at night, scoop manure, make sure calves come to the feed bunk, let us know if there is feed remaining from previous feeding, etc. It also includes the phone number to our veterinarian for health issues and neighbors just in case something gets out or goes wrong.”

Tip No. 3 – Use Your Smart Phone The Peterson family from South Dakota doesn’t have a lot of animals to feed at any given time. But like all of us, they keep a really busy schedule between work and kids’ activities and life in general. Cindy and Chisum run a business – Peterson Land & Livestock Auction – and their two girls, Delaney and Kendall, are involved in everything from 4-H and showing to One Act Play and church and all the things active high school and middle school girls do. So, with the family going different directions all the time, it’s key to them to have a smart list they can all access to keep up with any changes in the feeding routine. “We have a limited list here at our house with just pets and a few head of show stock, but we set up a shared note on our phones between Chisum, me, Delaney and our main chore helper,” Cindy explains. “If there is a change in ration or feed needs, someone updates the note immediately so it’s always up-to-date. That way, when we are rushing around trying to get things ready to leave, the feed list is always up-to-date, and everyone is in the loop.” Back in Texas, Erin uses her smartphone to make a video for their helpers. “I do a walk-through video on my phone with a narration of the feeding process and send that to our helpers,” she explains. “I point out where things are (such as light switches, water faucets, gate latches, etc.). These videos have become quite ‘famous’ here among our feeding helpers. I was asking someone

recently to feed for me and mentioned I make it really easy, then a friend who has fed for us before quickly said, “Oh yes, she’s gonna have it all measured and ready and then she’ll send you a video of how to do it!”

Delaney and Kendall Peterson of South Dakota

“I ask those that feed for us to send us a text or photo or video of how things are at the barn after each feeding,” she adds. “This gives us a general idea of when animals were fed and builds a history in case we need to make changes when we return or while we are still on the road. Also, we sometimes have someone different feeding on each day or morning vs. evening. If possible, I have the feeder come out to the barn before we leave so I can show them everything. But that isn’t always possible, so my videos come in really handy. Plus, if it is someone new, I understand it is hard to remember everything we show them so again, the video is a handy reminder.” Pretty much everyone who responded uses pre-measured cans or buckets and a lot of labeling and white boards. But two gals offered a completely different perspective. Both Caryn Vaught of Kansas and Lesia Schnitker of Texas would rather just stay home! “I stay home and become chore girl and enjoy the solitude,” Caryn says. While sometimes that is the best solution when you can’t find helpers that you trust, other times it just can’t be helped. For those times when everybody has to go, you really can’t overprepare when someone unfamiliar with your routine is caring for your animals. Erin admits their prep is a bit over the top. “But we don’t have daily help here at the barn, so our routine is not familiar to anyone except our family; thus we try to set it up so someone helping us doesn’t have to guess or figure out the unknowns,” she says. “And ultimately, no one is going to understand or have the same level of attachment and emotional investment as we do with our show animals. So, it really is our responsibility to set things up to have the critters cared for in our absence as best we can. “Preparing for the shows is more than packing the trailer, submitting entries and making hotel reservations; finding someone to feed twice a day and preparing things for them is a top priority.”

Extensi anDeWalle By Brandy V

Many Nebraska families are facing high stress levels due to the flooding and blizzard conditions affecting a large portion of the state. If you’re looking for some ideas to help your family cope with the added challenges, a major Nebraska Extension study may offer some insights for you.

RESOURCES • The Nebraska Counseling, Outreach and Mental Health Therapy

6. Know how to laugh and know how to cry, for both are essential to maintain an emotional balance in life.

• Nebraska Farm Hotline/Rural Response Hotline - 1-800-464-0258

7. Create a life full of meaning and purpose. All people face severe crises in life. You will not be able to avoid these challenges. Rather, your aim can be to live a useful life of service to your community. This brings richness and dignity to your life in spite of the troubles you endure.

• The NebGuide, Creating a Strong Family: Effective Management of Stress and Crisis (G1886), outlines many of the tips learned through a worldwide research project on strong families. The University of NebraskaLincoln study involved more than 24,000 family members in 35 countries.

8. Realize that suffering can be a catalyst for positive growth. Crisis, by definition, is a difficult time in your life. However, it also can be a turning point, planting the seeds for a satisfying and successful future. This is hard to internalize but useful to remember.

TOP 10 KEY IDEAS Following are my Top 10 of the 18 key ideas drawn from the NebGuide on

9. Identify spiritually with the grand procession of life: Through good times and bad, we, as individuals, come and go, but life from whence we all spring is eternal. There is something satisfying and soothing about that thought.

1. Look for something positive to focus on in the difficult situation and focus on it.

10.Get help outside the nuclear family when needed. Seek help from extended family members, supportive friends, neighbors, colleagues, members of your religious community, professionals in the community, or others. In a manner of speaking, it takes a whole village to resolve a crisis.

(COMHT) Program,800-464-0258, offers no-cost vouchers for confidential mental health services for persons affected by the rural crisis.

how you can help your family cope in the face of unexpected challenges.

2. Keep things in perspective. “These things too, shall pass.” 3. Pull together rather than apart. Don’t see the problem as an individual’s problem but as a challenge for the whole family. 4. Focus on what is most important and minimize fragmentation. Without focusing on the essentials, the details, details, details can get you edgy, even hysterical. 5. Go with the flow to some degree. Sometimes you are relatively powerless in the face of crisis. At this point it can be useful to simply tell yourself to “let it go.”

While it might be “easier said than done” to follow these strategies, giving every effort to embrace a positive approach to deal with a crisis will help you and your family more effectively handle the situation at hand. Disasters, whether natural or human-made, leave today’s families facing difficult times. Our ranching and farming families especially have been impacted by the recent floods and blizzards. Let’s remember to pull together … and help our fellow Nebraskans through this difficult time, as the recovery and rebuilding process will take a long time. Additional NebGuides in the series, Creating a Strong Family, are available on the Nebraska Extension Publications website.
