DO’S & DON’TS OF

BLADE & CLIPPER CARE By Kirk Stierwalt, Andis Grooming Educator

74 January/February 2020 • theshowcircuit.com

DO’S

There are many clipper and blade options available in livestock grooming. It is important to have varied tools for different animals you will be grooming. I use a wide variety of Andis tools, including the new Blue Ribbon II blade, Excel 5-speed and also the Pulse ZR II. The Pulse ZR II is my go-to for quick, on-the-road grooming and also for educational purposes. Be sure to always keep your clippers and blades in a clipper bag or box. This keeps clippers protected from the environment and transportation and also allows for ease to find your tools on the go. Treat clippers and blades with care, as these tools are your business.

BLADES

Oiling clipper blades with proper lubrication is very important. Whether cutting through natural hair coats or show day glues, having oiled clippers enables hair to feed better into the glue and extends the overall life and sharpness of the blade. It is important to find a solution for your tools that cleans and disinfects blades along with an oil. It is important to protect your blades when clippers are not in use. I use leather clipper covers for transit, which protects both the blade and clipper. Additionally, clipper and blade carriers are good to have to protect blades from teeth and tips being damaged or broken, while keeping the blades organized for various clipping job assignments.

CLIPPERS

Always use a clipper that fits the job you are doing. It’s important to know one blade will not cover every job. It is important to inspect your blade drive wear and always wipe your clippers clean after each job is complete, including the cord. As a livestock groomer, cleaning and maintenance of your tools is extremely important to ensure the quality of your grooming and longevity of your tools.

DON’TS BLADES

DO NOT put away dirty equipment, always clean before properly storing. Hair contains moisture and dirt, which can dull, rust and pit blades if left on blades for extended time when not in use. DO NOT clip with dull blades, as you will never get the results you want and can take longer to complete a job. DO NOT attempt to sharpen blades on your own. Always take your blades to a certified brand technician to re-sharpen, which drastically improves your blade performance.

CLIPPERS DO NOT wrap your clipper cord around the clipper housing for storage. Even though space saving, the cord can become coiled inside, which makes clipping a lot harder when you have to constantly struggle with your cord. DO NOT put your clipper in a position where you are unable to see the hair feeding into the blade. This will prevent cutting an unwanted area and prevent injuring the animal you are grooming. DO NOT tightly grip your clippers while grooming, unless specifically clipping the head area to prevent an accidental drop. It is important to keep clippers balanced in your hand for an even cut. Texas Ranch Brigades, a special camp for American youth interested in ranching, teaches them about land stewardship and livestock production, literally from the ground up. By: Lindsey Allen

104 January/February 2020 • theshowcircuit.com

There is the old saying, “if you build it, they will come.” Chris Farley, assistant director of the TCU Ranch Management Program, has the same mindset – except he isn’t focused on building a structure, but the next generation.

He isn’t wanting them to come anywhere necessarily, but to go out and be stewards of the land and livestock. Around 2010, Chris and a group of individuals began forming and developing a plan for a five-day camp now known as the Texas Ranch Brigades. This program teaches land stewardship and livestock production, including sustainable beef production from conception to consumer and utilizes a model of leadership development, education and empowerment.

The Texas Ranch Brigades isn’t your normal camp; it’s a mix of hard work and fun, studying long hours and making friendships accompanied by late nights and early mornings. At the close of the five days, the campers feel it was too short and are left wishing for more time as they swap phone numbers with new friends. And, despite the name, the camp is open to youth from all over the nation.

Any program that begins with necropsy is sure to be entertaining and different from most events. Plus, when you are staying at the beautiful Warren Ranch in Santa Anna, Texas, your accommodations don’t really align to what you might envision when you hear “camp.” Cadet Emma Schilhab enjoyed her time so much in the summer of 2019 that she has now planned to reroute her whole college trajectory as a result! “Before this camp, I was considering a degree in nursing or sports medicine, but after attending the Texas Ranch Brigades camp, I am considering a degree in ranch management,” she says. “Everything was hands-on. We were exposed to so many different aspects of ranch management in such a short period of time. “We learned and experienced the hard work and commitment it takes to ranch, but more importantly about the love you have to have for what you do every

“The purpose is to highlight all the opportunities in ranching. Future generations must be introduced into the importance of land stewardship,” he adds. His goal is for this curriculum to eventually be shared across every state’s cattlemen association and implemented across the country. Shelby Green was introduced to the importance of land stewardship at the 2018 camp and quickly completed the required steps to come back as an assistant leader for 2019. While she loved being a cadet, she says nothing compares to her time as an assistant leader and getting to watch her “herd,” as groups are referred to at camp, grow and excel over the five days.

single day. Texas Ranch Brigades also helped develop our communication and presentation skills to become more confident speakers and ambassadors for land conservation and stewardship.” Chris explains the mission of these five days, filled with little sleep, is to educate and empower the next generation of resource managers with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully manage and promote sustainable beef production. This is accomplished by bringing in a number of subject matter experts to provide hands-on demonstrations with the cadets. From veterinarians, college professors, Natural Resources Conservation Service agents, grass fed beef producers with retail stores and full-time ranchers, the cadets are exposed to all aspects of the industry. Madeline Brogan applied for the camp after her older sister went through the program and came back singing praises about her experience. “This camp was such a great experience for me,” Madeline says. ”It was such a great opportunity for teenagers who have an interest in learning about livestock production and what goes into running a ranch. I have grown tremendously as a leader through the five days I spent at camp and have gained many life skills and much knowledge to take back to my community as a result of my time with Texas Ranch Brigades,” she said. Madeline is now considering a degree in land management following her time as a cadet this summer. When Tarrant County Extension Agent Jacklyn Jones was approached by Chris to be an adult leader at the camp, she reviewed the jam-packed schedule and was on board. “I couldn’t say ‘yes’ quick enough when asked to be a leader,” Jacklyn recalls, “It’s everything in agriculture coming full circle. These cadets learn about the marketing aspects, end product, land management and how to sell the positive agricultural story, especially to those who have no connection to the industry. The resiliency and the desire to learn was in every one of those cadets.” Chris adds the sustainability of ranching must be “ecologically sound, economically sound and an enjoyable place to work.” He stresses the need for more young men and women in production agriculture and this camp helps spur that desire and passion.

“My favorite parts of being an assistant leader were encouraging my herd, helping them identify grasses, and passing on the little things I’ve learned as a cadet that make a herd stand out. Even if you’re not interested in agriculture, there will be something you’ll learn and enjoy in the five days spent at Texas Ranch Brigades, including the people! “With the goal of educating and empowering youth, they teach a lot about agriculture and natural resources management, but to make their cadets successful, the camp leaders know they need to make leaders. Public speaking, teamwork, responsibility, respect, leadership, work ethic and social media awareness are some of the many subjects covered in Texas Ranch Brigades,” Shelby recalls. Assistant leaders are not only former cadets, but top performing cadets who had to complete a number of tasks worth varying levels of points. Former cadets with the highest amount of points over the last year are then selected to come back as assistant leaders, with $8,000 in scholarships being divided among the returning cadets. Tasks throughout the year include: creating PowerPoint presentations about information covered at camp, setting up a trifold display presentation regarding the same content in a business, standing with your trifold at events to share about Texas Ranch Brigades, making a new plant collection, writing articles for magazines and newspapers, attending AgriLife field days, and doing radio interviews, to name a few. Activity report forms are filled out for each activity and compiled in a Book of Accomplishments (BOA). The BOAs are sent in twice throughout the following year to be graded and scored and the four cadets with the highest scoring BOAs are asked to attend camp as assistant leaders and awarded scholarships. Emma sums up the heart behind the camp pretty well when she says, “The most eye-opening part of attending this camp was realizing so many people devote their entire lives and careers to taking care of God’s creatures and God’s land. They do this because they love it, it’s in their blood and they want to leave our state in better shape for future generations. These people take so much pride in their work and their animals and are committed to educating us, the next generation, with the skills and knowledge to carry on all their hard work.” For more information about the Texas Brigades, or specifically Ranch Brigade, visit their website at www.texasbrigades.org. The application process begins Nov. 1 and ends March 15.

“Everything was hands-on. We were exposed to so many different aspects of ranch management in such a short period of time.”

“I have grown tremendously as a leader through the five days I spent at camp and have gained many life skills and much knowledge to take back to my community as a result of my time with Texas Ranch Brigades”

“With the goal of educating and empowering youth, they teach a lot about agriculture and natural resources management, but to make their cadets successful, the camp leaders know they need to make leaders.”

aus·pi·cious: giving or being a sign of future success The purpose of the Arkansas Jr. Cattlemen’s Association is to promote the welfare of the cattle industry, to further the education and cooperation of young people interested in cattle and the beef industry.

AJCA

BEING A LEADER

Google defines a leader as “The action of leading a group of people or an organization.” However, did you know that there are multiple aspects that makeup a leader? I believe through hard work and determination, a true leader is born. Whether you are in a classroom, workplace, or in a barn, true leaders will shine. I remember growing up, my mom always told me to watch what I was doing because somebody was always watching. Boy was she right; moms actually do know everything huh? In addition to my mom, I would like to talk about other organizations that have had a huge impact on the development of my leadership skills. In 4-H, I was taught to lead by using my head, heart, hands and health. I could still recite the 4-H pledge. I guess you would say it is etched into my brain, all thanks to Mrs. Paula. FFA has taught me to lead by believing in the future of agriculture, in all aspects, through both good times and all of the hardships. Both of these organizations helped me start developing leadership skills at an early age. The Arkansas Junior Cattlemen's Association has taught me that a good leader is always still learning themselves. One should consider everything and never turn an idea away without first considering if that idea could add value to the organization. Voice your opinion, no matter the situation. Through the multiple leadership positions, I’ve held in AJCA, I’ve learned to not take everything to heart, to smile at everyone and always lend a helping hand (even if someone thinks it's not needed). Miss Charolais USA, so far, has taught me to always hold your head up high (don’t want your crown to fall off!). Be a role model for the kids that may not have one. Make new friends and break out of your shell. I have longed for this position, and now given the opportunity, I am extremely excited to experience the

adventures that await. I know, too, that this position will allow me to grow my leadership skills immensely. For that, I am grateful. So, THANK YOU mom and dad for the hours in the barn and all the money spent. THANK YOU, Mrs. Paula Norman, for teaching me things I didn’t even think I needed to know and for being my second mom for oh so many years. THANK YOU Mr. Potter and Mr. Clark for teaching me and believing that I could do anything I set my mind to do. THANK YOU AJCA for showing me that a leader still needs to do a little learning all the time. Lastly, THANK YOU Miss Charolais USA for giving me something to smile about and adventures to go on. I would like to close by saying to all juniors out there; be thankful for your wins and your defeats. Let it help you to become a better person, showman, cattleman or businessman. There is always somebody watching, remembering every step and move you're making. One action can have so many effects on one person’s life and you may not even know it. So today, in this moment, I am thankful and you should be too. Baylee Mangrum

limit or prevent the spread of the disease. An important component of this process is premises registration of all facilities housing

livestock within Illinois. Currently Illinois has

spread disease through transmission from fessionally operated CAFOs. Therefore, every

facility housing livestock must be identi-

fied. To be effective, premises registration should not be limited to select categories of

livestock operations that attend livestock ex-

hibitions, etc. In addition, facilities housing equine should be identified because these

facilities often house other species such as goats and cattle. Illinois’ current voluntary registration program is not (has not been)

effective in obtaining widespread support, especially not from smaller scale operations. According to the most recent USDA statistics

48.5% of Illinois livestock farms are premises registered.

Species and Breeds that You Show: Show cattle and pigs – mostly all crossbreds. Favorite Show: My favorite show is Fort Worth because it was my first time to ever make the sale at a major show. Favorite Show Memory: My favorite memory of my stock show career is when I got selected Breed Champion at the 2019 San Antonio Show with my Hereford “Harvey.” That was very special to me because I knew I worked really hard and it had finally paid off! My mom hauled my calf to the show and helped me get him ready on show day. My dad was not able to come watch me show, but the next day he came to help me get ready for the Grand Drive at the rodeo! It is a special memory I will never forget! Favorite Show Steer: The show steer that has really touched me was my steer “Harvey.” We made so many memories together! Anything You Use for Good Luck: I have three things I do that sometimes spark my luck. These are what I wear: something on me with cactus, purple, or white socks to show in. I always call my grandparents, and I get pep talks from my dad for SURE, mom, Aunt Kaki, and my Uncle Jared. Least Favorite Show Activity: I hate to go wash and blow my steers because I always know that it is going to be a LONG day! My Favorite Book/Author: My favorite books or author is anything by Maddie Ziegler. Favorite Movie: My favorite movie is Wonder. It talks about kindness and that is what everyone in this world should be! Favorite Food: My all-time FAVORITE food is steak, baked potato and a salad. It hits the spot and it is always a tradition that after a show we go and I get to eat at a steakhouse! College Plans: I plan to go to Texas A&M and be on their livestock judging team. Anyone I Would Like To Thank: My family, Fred, Reid and all the other people that have helped me get to where I am today!

Why use yardley Bulls

1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage, not from an excess of grain. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 51 years selecting the best bulls we can find. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal to be competitive in the show ring. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own.

We loaded up our car and drove to Dunlap, Iowa with four kids in just marginal weather for one reason, to look at this bull. Let us introduce you to Something About Mary aka “SAM,” one of the most complete and prolific Simmental bulls we have seen in a long time. His pedigree, Relentless (Utah x 8543U) x JBSF Proud Mary (High Regard x Steel Magnolia), just solidifies the ability to transmit maternal, in fact it shouts it! Proud Mary owns as many ribbons as any female in the breed, she is big ribbed, big footed, and beautiful, she produces as good as she looks! This is a pedigree we put 100% confidence in. Owned with Sullivan Farms and Osborne Cattle ENT.
