PROFESSOR to PRODUCER
By Dr. Paul Walker, Professor Emeritus DI Walker Consulting
What is Yours Like? Or,” Oh I do not have one.” As I visit farms with many of the new monoslope buildings or Hoop structures, I see one important element missing – a hospital or sick or convalescent pen. Whether it is a lack of money for a sick pen inclusion or “we just did not think about it,” a hospital pen is often left out of the design. And, it is one of the most important components of a feedlot – right next to a well-designed circle flow, working corral and chute system. In some scenarios, the cattle in a new building are expected to utilize an existing hospital pen, which is certainly okay if the sick pen is not too far away. Large feedlots are often equipped to haul sick cattle to the hospital pens. Sick cattle can be driven (walked slowly) if the distance is not far. Therefore, I always encourage my customers to include either an easily accessible, centralized convalescent pen or a new hospital pen as part of the new construction. There are several essential components of a well-designed hospital facility. These items include: 1) A somewhat isolated pen(s) where convalescing cattle can rest without constant disturbance. I recommend two pens compared to only one pen, so newly treated calves can be separated from chronic cattle that should be sent to the sale barn or the compost pile. These are called realization calves – realize your loss and get them off the feed bill. 2) The facility should be light and airy as opposed to a dark, enclosed or a low-ceiling building. 3) Be sure the hospital pens are not windy and are dry at all times. Cattle rest more and recuperate faster if they are dry and out of the wind. 4) The facility should contain its own chute and head gate – not an elaborate system (just a chute and crowd gate capable of easily handling a” few” calves.) If the hospital pens are located next to the primary working facility, a second headgate system may not be needed. Whether one or two systems are required depends somewhat on the size of the operation. Then again, my operation has 12 cows, three cattle barns and a cattle chute/headgate in each building. I like convenience. 5) The floor should be earth-based with built up dry bedding, not concrete. Cattle rest more comfortable and recuperate faster on earth than on concrete. And, a hospital pen is designed for a few calves at a time, not a whole herd. 6) Any concrete in the hospital facility should be well grooved for traction and not smooth or slick. All concrete should be sloped for drainage to an appropriate area so the facility under the chute and crowd area can be washed and cleaned. 7) A source of clean water is essential. I prefer a water tank as opposed to an automatic waterer. Providing medication in the water is easier with a water tank and, having to manually fill the tank daily, makes it easy to access water intake. Truly sick cattle will not drink much water, while cattle on the mend
130 September/October 2019 • theshowcircuit.com
will increase water consumption. Stock tank heaters also, can be set to keep the water warmer in the winter to encourage water intake. The easy way to keep water tanks clean is to use chlorine tablets from the swimming pool. They work very well. 8) Sometimes the use of multiple smaller capacity feed bunks, placed in different locations will encourage feed consumption for sicker, more timid calves that may not be ready for competition if several calves are in the sick pen at one time. 9) Be sure the hospital pens are easily accessible for skid steers or a tractor. Deaths do occur and dead removal should be easy. 10)A heated/air-conditioned room located within next to or near the hospital facility is nice (not necessary) for storing pharmaceuticals. 11)Another option that is non-essential, but can be often helpful, is a 12’ x 20’ heated room in which one or two sick cattle can be placed during really cold temperature environments. Pneumonia calves will respond to treatment faster in a 40°F environment than in a minus 20°F temperature. However, placement in a heated room can be overdone with negative effects. A well-designed hospital facility can be expensive, but the investment is usually worth the return. The first cost is usually why sick pens are not part of the original design. Too often a hospital facility is an afterthought and hap–hazardly put together. Do not let that mistake be a part of your design process. Doing it right the first time is always the least expensive way. Talk to you. Species and breeds of livestock you show: Steers and Pigs mainly show Maine, Chi, and crossbreeds What is your favorite show and why? Purdue Agr because it’s laid back and the show ring is unique compared to other jackpot shows in the winter. What is your favorite show memory and why? In 2011 Danielle, Tyler, and I three holed the Ohio Beef Expo. We all began high fiving after we were picked.
Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: Blowing the steers out after rinsing is my least favorite because it takes forever once they get to be fat steers. What do you like to do outside of the barn/ show ring: I was on the varsity tennis team, I volunteer at a local community shelter serving supper to the less fortunate, I was in National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, FFA, 4-H President, Key Club Favorite book or author: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han Favorite movie: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Age: 18
Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? I’ve been wearing the same pair of black boots for the past 6 years. The nails are coming out of the bottom but I refused to get new ones. Also, I use a specific gray showstick even though it’s bent and has black spots on it from paint shows.
Elizabeth HEINTZ
Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: In 2013 I had a short and stalky dark red steer. His name was Chuck he had hard hair to work with so we gave him the nickname Jamal. He was in the top 5 at almost every show we went to that year. He was an easy show steer and loved to be a show calf.
Favorite food: Spaghetti What are your college or career goals? I will be attending Siena Heights University in the fall majoring in Social Work with a minor in Geriatrics/ Spanish to become a Geriatric Social Worker. Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring? I would like to thank my family especially for giving me the opportunity to show and pushing me to become a better showman. Also, the Winegardner/Klingaman families for making me the showman I am today and teaching me how to get my steers look the way they are. Without them I would not have been able to win the State Fair let alone be in the top 5 at jackpot shows. Finally Kevin, Dale, Lee, and all of the people that helped fit and show my steers over the past 9 years couldn’t have done any of it without all of you.

Hello! My name is Paige Pence. I am 16 years old and this is my seventh year in 4-H and second year in FFA. I attend Miami East High School and will be a Junior this year. I show lambs, goats, and cattle. This year, I showed two boer goat wethers at the Ohio State Fair and was Reserve and 5th Overall. In the lamb barn, I had a Hampshire, Southdown, Natural, and a few crossbreds for the Ohio State Fair Lamb Show. I was Champion Overall with my Hampshire and 3rd Overall with my Natural Colored lamb. Lastly, for the Ohio State Fair Beef Show I had a division 3 crossbred steer which will now go to the Miami County Fair. My favorite show is between the Ohio State Fair or the American Royal. The Ohio State Fair has always been home for me since 2011 when i started showing hogs there for the first time. Ever since, I have met new friends and been very fortunate to be as successful as I’ve been. The American Royal is a bit of a journey. The 9 hour trip has always been worth the memories. In 2017, it was my first national show win with the goats. My favorite show memory would’ve been in 2018 at the North American Livestock Exposition when I was going into the final drive. I’ve been able to listen to judges final speeches before selecting their champion whether I’ve been in the ring, or on the other side of the fence. Glen Martin made a speech about our industry and the exhibitors. It was very heartfelt to me, and being able to hug my parents afterward was even better. My favorite animal was Neo in 2017. He was a boer goat wether. He showed twice in his lifetime. A month before the Ohio State Fair we had to take him to the OSU Vet because he had arthritis in his joints. We were afraid he’d never get better or show. He ended up 3rd Overall in the Market Show, and went on to win the American Royal. He was one of the most strongest and most peaceful animals I would’ve ever had. One of the most luckiest things I will have with me every time I show somewhere big is a picture frame. It is a picture of Neo, with ear tags around the frame of past animals I once had. It means the world to me and I would say it’s worked. One of my least favorite activities in the barn is cleaning pens. I like to do them all on the same day. It
158 September/October 2019 • theshowcircuit.com
becomes very challenging when there are more than you thought and when it takes longer than you expect it to. Outside of the barn and 4-H, I enjoy participating in FFA activities like Livestock Judging or field trips. Being involved is important because it can help my future. One of my favorite movies, well, I guess I don’t have one. They are so many to decide from, but Disney has to be the best of all. My favorite food has to be either the Apple Dumplings at the State Fair, or the milkshakes at County Fair. Either of which I don’t necessarily need, but definitely have to have. Some of my college and career goals would be getting on a Livestock Judging Team and pursuing Ag Business. I have looked into some Illinois Colleges, Iowa State, or maybe even Oklahoma State. I still have two years to make my final decision, but I’d like to go somewhere in Illinois. To be where I am today, I am blessed and so appreciative of my family and friends who have gotten me to this point. I am so thankful for all my parents do for me. If I didn’t have them, I am not sure where I would be right now. When it comes to goats, Cooper Bounds has never failed to keep my head up. He’s the big brother I never had. He taught me most of everything I know about goats and for that I will always appreciate him. For the cattle, Seth and Emily Miller have always been my other parents. Taught me everything I know about cattle. I’m so lucky they have helped me for the past 4 years. In the sheep area, Brad Amthauer, Randy Hill and Preston Forsee have made this year totally unforgettable for my family and I. This was the best set of sheep I have ever had. They traveled many miles to come and help us during the summer. Many people have spent time helping my family and I to be as successful as we are. I wish for nothing more than to make more memories with my livestock, friends, and family.
Paige Pence

On the north edge of the rural community of Good Hope, Ill., is a young family that works hard every day on their livestock projects. With roots deeply imbedded in the industry, Nolan and Carter Hoge know the challenges of working with multiple numbers of multiple species. They also know the satisfaction of victory when their hard work pays off. Mark and Katie Hoge have instilled work ethic into their family, which also includes 4-year-old Nora. Learn more about Carter and Nolan and their lives on and off the circuit…
Nolan HOGE
Carter HOGE Age: 14 Species and breeds of livestock you show: Cattle, Pigs, Sheep What is your favorite show and why? North American International Livestock Exposition, It is the most competitive heifer show of the year. I love that we go as a group and line our trailers up and make awesome tie out pens. We work together as a group and help each other out. It means a great deal when you do well because the competition is so strong. I love to hang out with friends from different states that I don’t get to see very often. What is your favorite show memory and why? Recently, I won the Illinois State Fair Market Lamb Show. It was so much fun riding over in the trailer with all the other breed champions. It was amazing walking into the newly remodeled coliseum in front of a giant crowd, but yet being so zoned in on my sheep. Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: Juicy, the first Limousin heifer that I ever showed. She had a great show career and was fun to show because when she hit the show ring she knew what she was doing. She was always show ready when she hit the ring. Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? Not really, but I try to be organized. I have my own show harness, show stick, pig whip and brush that says Hoge Livestock. I do not like going to the ring to show unless I am using my own show utensils.
176 September/October 2019 • theshowcircuit.com
Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: When we are walking the pig barn twice a day and we have 30 head to walk. The last 10 or so get pretty tough to stay focused. What do you like to do outside of the barn/show ring: Design livestock trailers and barns, look up cool vehicles on the internet and play football. Favorite book or author: I do like to read but I do not have a favorite author I follow. Favorite movie: National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Favorite food: Hamballs and Jack’s Frozen Pizza One unique thing about you: I am very organized and like structure. What are your college or career goals? I would like to attend Black Hawke East college and then transfer to Western Illinois University. I plan on furthering my education at Iowa State University and then Michigan State University. Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? If so, what is it? Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring? Jared Boyert and his family. He has taught me so much about raising and showing cattle. I always look forward to going to shows and working on my cattle with the whole Boyert crew!
Age: 11
What do you like to do outside of the barn/show ring: Play sports.
Species and breeds of livestock you show: Cattle, Pigs, Sheep
Favorite book or author: Mike Lupica is an awesome author. I like all of his books because they are about sports.
What is your favorite show and why? World Pork Expo because there is a lot of fun activities there. What is your favorite show memory and why? One of my favorite things to do is raise and show pigs. I have been lucky enough to win Champion Bred and Owned in pigs several times. I would love if I could do this with one of my heifers in the future. Tell us about your all-time favorite show animal: I like anything to do with Berkshires and Herefords.
Favorite movie: Ride Along 2 Favorite food: Jack’s Pizza and Chocolate followed by a Pepsi! One unique thing about you: In no particular order, I like the Iowa Hawkeyes, Berkshires and Herefords. What are your college or career goals? Undetermined. I’m still contemplating, I’m only 11.
Do you have anything you keep in your show box for good luck or any good luck rituals on show day? I won a Hereford belt buckle at the Illinois State Fair that brings me good luck. It was sponsored by the Stephen Jensen family.
Do you have a quote or motto you like to follow? If so, what is it? If you aren’t going all the way, why go at all? - Joe Namath
Least favorite show-day or show-barn activity: I do not find pleasure in blowing out heifers every day.
Who is someone you’d like to thank for helping you succeed in the showring? I look up to my dad because he works really hard and helps us with our livestock projects.
“With Safe-Guard® they bounced back like you’d just put them on feed.” Eddie Parker chooses Safe-Guard dewormer for efficacy and ease of use.
“Switching to Safe-Guard is one of the best things we ever did.”
Eddie had his first bout with resistance when he found out his endectocide dewormer just wasn’t cutting it. Two months later, his cattle were still riddled with worms. So, he treated his cattle with Safe-Guard. Sure enough, they bounced back. That’s because Safe-Guard acts fast 1 so cattle can get the most from their feed.

Mother Nature Does What She Wants
By Wes Ishmael
Pagan sacrifices. Burning forests. Detonating bombs. Shooting at clouds. Those are just a few ways folks have tried to prove Mark Twain wrong over time. He’s the one who famously remarked that everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it. In fact, entire nations have tried to do plenty. According to the Texas Weather Modification Association (TWMA), “The first hint of the potential of human activity to alter the behavior of clouds came just after the Civil War, when civil engineer Edward Powers made the observation that rainstorms often occurred where major battles between Union and Confederate troops were waged. The immense smoke, dust, and other particulate matter put into the air during conflict seemed to invigorate clouds to rain more.”
During World War II, innovative G.I.s figured out that if they could build fires big enough, close enough to runways, they could burn off fog so planes could land. Back in the 1960s the U.S. seeded clouds over the Ho Chi Minh trail in an effort to extend the monsoon season and slow the enemy during the Vietnam war. The subsequent furor, when the nation and the world learned about Operation Popeye, spawned the mid-1970s United Nations Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques. So there. Since, and in between, individuals and nations have worked hard at modifying the weather for civilian purposes, too. China made a ruckus with its guarantee of a rainfree opening Olympics ceremony in Beijing, thanks to that nation’s formidable invest-
ment in weather modification apparatus and know-how. The opening festivities were indeed dry. Then again, drought there at the time also made for a lousy corn. Speaking of which, according to TWMA, “Weather Modification has been tried since 1891 in Texas; the first attempt was by patent attorney Robert Dyrenforth, who was given a $2,000 grant by the U.S. Congress to do a series of rain making experiments near Midland. Severe droughts have driven the need for weather modification since its beginning, and the current attempt is no exception.” According to a paper a few years back from the Committee on the Status and Future Directions in U.S Weather Modification Research and Operations at the National Research Council (NRC), “Operational weather modification programs, which primarily involve cloud seeding activities aimed at enhancing precipitation or mitigating hail fall,
exist in more than 24 countries, and there were at least 66 operational programs being conducted in 10 states across the United States in 2001.
if the climate is just the amalgamation of weather over a specific period of time, it would seem he can’t do much to change the climate, either.
nut case started pushing buttons. All told, there’s no telling how many times in history one climate disaster or another was supposed to be just around the corner.
“No federal funding currently (2001) is supporting any of these operational activities in the United States. Despite the large number of operational activities, less than a handful of weather modification research programs are being conducted worldwide. After reaching a peak of $20 million per year in the late 1970s, support for weather modification research in the United States has dropped to less than $500,000 per year.”
At least Bernie Sanders, Al Gore before him, and their Flat Earth brothers and sisters can take solace in the fact that they’re last in a long line of climatological doomsayers. If you’re old enough, you might remember when the eco-craze kicked off in
Each time, where science and physical efforts fail, it seems like folks with a bone to pick can always try to fill the gap with legislation. Take even a cursory view of the Climate Energy Resolution announced by Sanders and others this summer. The resolution calls for, “…a national, social, industrial and economic mobilization of the resources and labor of the United States at a massive-scale to halt, reverse, mitigate, and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations.”
Logic says, even for the government, at some point it’s hard to justify budget increases for projects that continue to have iffy results; confounded by the capriciousness of Mother Nature.
A couple of decades ago, when the global warming debate was reaching full cry, and the pretentiously named Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was becoming the darling of eco-maniacs, I chatted with an Ivy League meteorologist embroiled in the debate. Turned out he was a worldrenowned expert and part of the panel. He was a dark horse on the committee, though, who wasn’t buying into the Chicken Little theories of imminent doom. He related his frustrations with the politics at play within the panel, helped me understand which data was credible and not.
Consider cloud seeding. In simple terms, you drop silver iodide or dry ice into clouds, providing more stuff for moisture to attach to and hopefully fall from the sky. Aside from other essentials, cloud seeding requires, well, clouds, which are often scarce during droughts when weather modification would be most useful. In the aforementioned NRC paper: “The committee concludes that there still is no convincing scientific proof of the efficacy of intentional weather modification efforts. In some instances there are strong indications of induced changes, but this evidence has not been subjected to tests of significance and reproducibility…”
the early 1970’s. At that time, it was global cooling that had everyone in an uproar. It was all that darned hair spray and other consumer aerosols, according to the pseudologic, punching holes in the ozone, allowing too much heat to escape, ushering in a new ice age.
That’s why the caterwauling over man’s role in climate change is such a logical puzzlement. If man can’t change the weather, and
That scare borrowed from legitimate concerns a few years earlier about the nuclear winter that might ensue if some Cold War
“So, with all of the research, what do we know about global warming?” I asked. He told me, “We know that global temperatures have increased at times in history and we know that global temperatures have declined at other times in history.” That’s it. Period.
