Are You Really Prepared for A New School Year?
You’ve shopped for new clothes, bought their school supplies, enrolled them in after-school activities and arranged the carpool. Congratulations, you’re well on your way to starting the new school year on the right track. But what about next year and the years following? If your back-to-school checklist doesn’t include a plan for future education needs, you might need to make some additional preparations. It may seem like college is years away, but waiting to save for those expenses—even for one year—can make a great difference. Children grow quickly, and the cost of a college education is growing at an even faster rate. Today, many of the elite institutions cost upward of $30,000 annually to attend—and those costs are projected to double in 18 years. The sooner you start thinking about future college costs, the more time you’ll have to develop and implement a solid education plan. Creating an education plan will help you determine how much you’ll need to save for your family’s future education needs. When it’s time to implement your plan, there are several options available, including 529 College Savings Plans. The plans are one of the best ways to save for higher education, since they provide tax-deferred asset accumulation, professional management, flexibility, as well as several other benefits not available in other education saving options. Most 529 plans also offer systematic investment options, allowing you to make regular, automatic contributions and take advantage of compounding and tax-deferred growth. As you prepare for a new school year, make an appointment to speak to your Financial Advisor about developing a customized education plan that may help you meet your collegefunding goals. Even if you already have a plan, it is still a good time to meet with your Advisor for an annual education review to make sure you are still on the right track. Whether your child is preparing for kindergarten or studying for the SATs, an education plan should always be a part of your back-to-school checklist. Matthew E. O’Donnell is a Financial Advisor located in Chicago, IL and may be reached at (312) 917-7464 or http://fa.smithbarney.com/matthew_odonnell.

BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) is a youth program of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association that recognizes Ohio’s junior beef exhibitors through a series of sanctioned shows. The 2009-2010 BEST program featured 15 sanctioned shows across the state of Ohio, over 380 head of cattle and more than 280 youths. The OCA BEST program promotes educating Ohio’s junior about beef industry issues, promotes family memberships and participation in the OCA, and rewards the successful accomplishments of the hard work of junior beef producers. The program is also designed to promote consistency between Ohio’s steer and heifer shows.

Trans Ova Article
Turn investment for the future into marketing for today with advanced reproductive technologies
Advanced reproductive technologies can increase the rate of genetic change and be an investment for future calf crops. However, embryo transfer (ET), in vitro fertilization (IVF), sexed semen, and genetic preservation and cloning offer additional opportunities for marketing your cattle’s elite genetics. Auctions offering frozen genetics (cryopreserved embryos and semen) have become increasingly popular. Freezing and banking ET embryos can be a very effective way to help generate early revenue from a cow or heifer that was recently purchased, or from a female that a breeder does not have an interest in selling. “Embryos are typically offered in packages of three at embryo auctions like the Embryos on Snow event held each year during the National Western Stock Show,” says Jared Knock, sales and marketing director for Trans Ova Genetics.“Frozen embryos are very easy to transport across the country, so buyers from thousands of miles away can consider purchases without significant added costs.” Also, it allows an interested buyer to sample multiple, different breeding programs with a fairly small upfront investment. Offering even greater flexibility for a buyer is a right to flush package, which allows an interested breeder to pick the sire they would like to use for the flush. Many times these are sold on prominent females and there are guarantees on the number of embryos produced on these packages, but it is important to look into the details before making a purchase. Sexed semen is another value-added market. Many new bulls have a hard time differentiating themselves from competition, but offering packages of sexed semen is something unique. Since sexed semen can be sorted for males or females, and for artificial insemination (AI) or ET programs, there are opportunities to develop a creative marketing plan around sexed semen. Recently, the combination of sexed semen in ET
272
August 2010 theshowcircuit.com
programs has allowed breeders to market sexed ET embryos on specific matings. This holds tremendous potential to offer a package that is very specific to what buyers may be looking for. Once in a while, a bull comes into high demand with very limited amounts of semen available. One advantage of IVF is the limited number of sperm cells it requires for fertilization. “If a client chooses not to sort the semen before use in IVF, we can often use one straw of semen on 5-10 cows at a time,” says Knock. “But, this is highly dependent on semen quality.” Some breeders are beginning to understand the marketing opportunity behind IVF technology. A breeder will use one unit of semen, aspirate three cows from their program, and sell fertilization “slots” to other breeders. Donors would need to be collected on the same day. Through some logistic coordination, this application of IVF gives the semen owner the option sell one unit of semen several different times. Finally, cloning offer possibilities for breeders to capture more from their genetic assets. A breeder with an elite animal can collect a cell line, or genetic preservation, for the purpose of cloning immediately, or just banking cells to keep for future use. Several clones have sold in recent years and the donor’s cell lines have sometimes been sold as a package with an animal, or kept with the understanding of the original owner. Breeders tend to view advanced reproductive technologies as investments that have long term impact on our breeding programs, and they certainly are. However, these services also offer ways to market genetics in a way that adds revenue to a breeding program very quickly. Breeders have found creative ways to meet customer needs through these technologies and many other opportunities still exist.

Oklahoma Club Calf Association - July ‘10
Greetings from steamy and hot Oklahoma! Summer is upon us, and the heat is on. The rains are steady in the Central Oklahoma, so we are not in the hay meadow yet, but the hay is looking good. Preview show was a big success, and the numbers were way up this year. Congratulation to all the OCCA members that did well. As I am writing this, a lot of our members are at the Jr. Nationals. Good luck at these shows, and be safe as you are traveling. Again we want to give a big thanks to our sponsors, Cherokee Trailers, Elite Trailers, Purina Mills, Cinch, and Cruel Girl, for all that they do for the Oklahoma Club Calf Association. All of you OCCA members, remember to recruit new members when you are at these shows. OCCA’s new website is coming out soon. Be on the look out let us know what you think of it. Several OCCA shows are on the horizon. Don’t forget that the OCCA sponsors the prospect steer show at the Tulsa State Fair and The Wanted Ones Sale. If you have consignments, get them to Tiffani and Roxane as soon as you can. Good Luck and Be Safe! I will see you at the shows this fall.
Tim B Stidham, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com
