smart – A Daimler Brand. 4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

Welcome In this issue of ‘4site’ smart Magazine, I actually start with two welcome messages. Welcome to another edition of smart related information news and features and secondly, welcome to the first online issue of ‘4site’ smart Magazine.

Way back in July 2000, thesmartclub was created to provide smart car owners in the UK with information and support for their new smart cars. At that time there were around 40 Members in the club.

Al Young Editor, Chairman & Managing Director thesmartclub ltd thesmartclub ltd. 1 Corbiehill Park Edinburgh EH4 5EQ UK Tel: +44 (0) 749-383-1430

These were very early days in the life of smart and smart ownership. To put our launch in perspective, it was: • around 2 years before the first UK official smart Retailer launched right hand drive smart cars • more than 3 years before Facebook was created • nearly 6 years before twitter appeared Since then, our Membership has continually grown, our online services have continually expanded and the smart brand has seen many models come and go! In addition, online tools, services and social media channels have grown considerably. We launched our first ‘4site’ Newsletter in June 2004 and since then, we continued to develop the publication to become the world’s only independent magazine published for smart car owners.

We are equally very conscious about providing cost effective Membership benefits for all our Members but we have to balance this against the cost of ‘in-print’ publications. As the world continues to move to digital platforms, our own ‘4site’ magazine has now moved to a new online basis for this and all future issues. The great news however is that it removes the need for us to limit the publication to a fixed number of pages and equally, we can have additional ‘event specific’ additional publications throughout the year. And with ‘4site’ now residing on this digital platform, you can take the online magazine with you across a range of portable devices.

smart mobile disco by Konstantin Grcic smart ready to party

Stuttgart/Milan. smart has revolutionised urban mobility and pioneered innovative services that stand for joie de vivre in the city. The same now goes for night-life, too: with the smart mobile disco, the brand has developed an unusual workstation for DJs – with DJ booth, mixer console, fog machine and various light effects. The show car was created by product designer Konstantin Grcic. JBL, smart’s long-standing audio partner, provided the professional sound equipment. The unusual smart was one of the highlights at the preview of “Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today” at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein on 16 March. The exhibition will run until 9 September 2018. The show car will make its next public appearance at a smart party during the “Salone di Mobile Milano” (17 to 22 April), the world’s largest furniture trade fair, which draws some 350,000 visitors each year: a smart party featuring the smart mobile disco will take place in the centre of Milan on 17 April, beginning at 7 p.m. “The smart mobile disco is a great symbol of the smart brand’s links with club culture – a scene that draws people together, forges bonds and brings joy,” says smart boss Dr Annette Winkler. “The many different facets of club culture all embrace a departure from given norms, a different way of looking at things and the courage to try out something new. This is what links the club culture with smart. Visionary thinking and a passion to keep questioning the status quo encapsulate smart’s aims and its essential attitude.” The smart mobile disco is based on a smart EQ fortwo (combined power consumption: 13.0-12.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km ). The interior now accommodates the equipment for operating the lifting platform on which the DJ’s booth is installed. The booth can be raised and is fitted out with various items of equipment, including a mixer console and gooseneck microphone. Laminated side supports stabilise the smart mobile disco when in use for deejaying. A fog machine located behind the radiator grille blows smoke onto the dance floor. A host of different light effects are on board to conjure up the ultimate disco fever: the smart is fitted with LED headlamps, which project an animated light show onto the dance floor. A stroboscope inside the vehicle sets the smart flashing at the push of a button. There is an LED matrix on either side of the boom, and a spotlight which can be turned in any direction is also part of the show. The smart mobile disco’s alloy wheels are back-lit, and the show car’s underbody is also illuminated.

smart is a global sponsor of the exhibition “Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today”, which will be on show from 17 March to 9 September 2018 at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The exhibition has been designed by Konstantin Grcic. The smart mobile disco was evolved in the course of this collaboration. Back in 2015, smart and JBL produced arguably the world’s smallest mobile concert location in the guise of the smart forgigs study. Club sound for production vehicles, too: JBL sound system The smart mobile disco is a one-off model and not for sale. But with the JBL sound system a unique sound experience is possible in all new-generation smarts. The JBL sound system develops impressive sound volume and incorporates a 6 channel DSP amplifier (240 watts) in the fortwo and an 8 channel DSP amplifier (320 watts) on board the forfour. A total of eight (fortwo) or twelve (forfour) high-performance loudspeakers provide for outstanding sound quality: one broadband centre loudspeaker, two tweeters in the mirror triangle, two lower mid-range speakers in the doors (on the forfour additionally in the rear doors), two broadband rear-fill loudspeakers and in the fortwo a removable woofer on the left-hand side of the luggage compartment. The woofer is simple to remove without needing tools, should more space be required in the luggage compartment.

News from smart

Bold new ventures with smart Stuttgart “Be first. Drive electric.”– under this motto, smart is launching an international campaign to accompany the market launch of the EQ fortwo and forfour models. The campaign with a strong digital bias centres on boldly trying out something new and the pleasure to be had in helping to break new trends. This special “be first” moment may vary from one person to another – and may take the form of driving an electric vehicle, for example. A special feature of the campaign’s development and implementation is the “creative agency hub”, which involved four agencies working together by way of a co-creation approach. The campaign is to run in Germany until the end of July, after which it will be on air in other European markets.

“Being number one – that is a perfect fit with smart. Since the beginning of the brand, we have radically redefined urban mobility. We are the first automotive brand now to offer the entire model range – smart fortwo, cabrio and forfour – as allelectric vehicles. Our radical approach also extends to the area of electric mobility, where our vehicles and the innovative smart ready to services provide simple solutions to help our customers avoid daily hassle and inconveniences in the city. The Be First campaign shows that electric mobility is fun, radical, simple and ideal for the city. “The campaign presents the complex topic of electric mobility in a lighthearted manner through stories from protagonists’ everyday lives,” explains Denise Heinermann, Head of Marketing Communications smart. “The campaign is aimed at young, post-modern, urban progressives who are curious and open to new ideas. They can experience their very own personal Be First moment with all the electric models belonging to the smart family: environment-friendly, zero-emissions motoring in the city – driving enjoyment included.” The campaign adopts a digital, always-on approach, whetting appetites for electric mobility on various levels. The integrated moving image campaign spans the areas of TVC, product film and pre-rolls, editorial stories, how-to films, features and social snippets for smart’s international digital channels and platforms. All content is to be prepared and implemented along target group- and channelspecific lines.

6

Central focus on moving image and digital content “The campaign centres on moving image content which conveys a clear stance on the topic of electric mobility and showcases the smart EQ models on- and off-line,” says Carolin Güthenke, Head of smart Marketing Communications. In the film “Be First Manifesto”, which is also to be used as a TV sport, smart makes a strong case for electric mobility. The imagery takes up the “First” and “Second” theme: there is a subtle difference between being “first” and “second”. Driving the smart EQ fortwo or forfour models is about blazing a new trail and setting trends. “The first and the second” – so close, yet decidedly different. The film shows the happy moments of people who break free of conventions and other people’s expectations. The second film of the campaign – the “Magic Date Drive” – also homes in on the “Be First” moment. In the age of Facebook, Tinder and Co., blind dates are nothing rare. The unknown and the unexpected provide a special thrill and turn the situation into a “Be First” moment. In the film, smart features as the initiator of these “magic dates”. The special feature is that the dates take place in the car during a test drive. The film shows the most emotional moments.

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

Editorial stories and how-to videos For use on social media, the campaign includes additional moving image elements. The editorial stories show influencers from the worlds of fashion, food and music on their way to their “Be First” moment. A street musician enjoys his first live appearance in front of a large audience thanks to smart, for example https://www.youtube.com. Entertaining how-to videos provide information on key features of the smart EQ fortwo and forfour models. Topics from the field of electric mobility are explained here with a certain lightness of touch: charging, range and the intelligent features smart EQ control app and smart ready to share. Product pages including a vehicle configurator at smart.com round off the digital measures. The eMobility hub additionally serves as a comprehensive source of information on all aspects of electric mobility. https://www.smart.com.

Street-style presentation The campaign motifs showcase the smart EQ models in their natural habitat: the city. The photographs are in the style of a “premium snapshot”. Based on “street photography”, the vehicles are depicted with urban avant-gardists - with a glossy aesthetic, but with a perfection all of their own. The motifs will appear in various formats - always under the claim “Be first. Drive electric.” and the message “Intelligent - and fun”. Credits In accordance with smart’s “creative agency hub” model, BBDO Berlin was responsible for the campaign motifs and banners, the programmatic advertising and the measures for dealer marketing. The fischerAppelt agency implemented the integrated moving image concept. This covers smart’s digital channels, the TV spot and the product film. Fuel was responsible for media strategy and planning. The JEFF Berlin agency developed the central theme for the campaign.

Mercedes-Benz Cars at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show From a stunning sports car to an all-electric city car

Geneva. At the 88th Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is presenting a slew of world premieres in a clear demonstration that the brand with the three-pointed star offers vehicles to suit all needs. First to be unveiled was the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 11.2-9.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 256-209 g/km ), which augments the successful AMG GT family with another member. Also celebrating its world premiere was the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 (fuel consumption combined: 13.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 299 g/km), the new generation of the off-road legend by Mercedes-AMG. Further highlights in Geneva include the extensively redesigned C-Class. The bestseller with the three-pointed star appears with new, even more efficient engines. Also on show for the first time is a pre-production version of the first plug-in diesel hybrid, which is set to feature in both the C-Class and the E-Class. The new Mercedes-AMG C 43 (fuel consumption combined: 9.4-9.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 214-209 g/km1) guarantees compelling performance. Plus, the presentation of smart EQ fortwo (combined power consumption: 13.0-12,9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) and the smart EQ forfour (combined power consumption: 13.2-13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) sees the inventor of the automobile take the next step towards the electrification of its entire model line-up by 2022. More space, more power, more goose bumps – the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers a whole new dimension of driving and expands the AMG model line-up. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and forms a direct link to the legendary and highly successful SLS and AMG GT models. A further vehicle developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG, it unites unique design, excellent comfort and phenomenal sports car technology with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and greater usability. The consistent expansion of the AMG GT family by the four-door coupé therefore opens up the sports car segment to those customers seeking a vehicle they can use every day without having to give up the unique performance of Mercedes-AMG. The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers a very special driving experience across the board and ensures a confident and refined presence in all areas of life, with exceptional performance and a top speed of 315 km/h. Modern, powerful in-line 6 and V8 engines with a power spectrum ranging from 320 kW (435 hp) to 470 kW (639 hp) unleash completely new driving experiences and pair compelling performance figures with contemporary efficiency. “There are enough cars out there that are a moving compromise. The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé certainly is not. There’s plenty of space in the back – and plenty of performance in the front,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “With the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, we are adding another great option to our portfolio. It now offers more variety and choice than ever.”

Mercedes-AMG G 63 – new generation of the performance off-road vehicle The G 63 underscores its unique position among performance off-road vehicles with its powerful drive, all-new AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, AMG-specific driving programmes and new interior with optional Widescreen Cockpit. The basis for the hallmark AMG Driving Performance both on- and off-road is the 430 kW (585 hp) 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, the rear-biased all-wheel drive (40:60) with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission, the double-wishbone independent front suspension and adaptive damping. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds is a clear demonstration of its outstanding performance credentials. The reinterpretation of the unmistakeable design sets characteristic accents with the exclusive AMG radiator grille, flared wheel arches, distinctive side pipes on the exhaust system and wheels measuring up to 22 inches. “With Mercedes-Benz Cars, the customer has got the choice,” says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. “We want to offer a tempting solution for every customer: from city car to offroad legend, from AMG performance to Maybach luxury, whether you are a geek or a family dad or a businesswoman.” Mercedes-Benz C-Class – new engine line-up for the bestseller Mercedes-Benz’s most successful model range starts its fifth year of production with an extensive array of upgrades, including stylish revisions to the exterior and interior design. The electronic architecture is completely new. The customer sees this in the user experience, with an optional fully digital instrument display and multimedia systems with tailor made information and music. The assistance systems are now on the same level as those in the S-Class. One highlight of technology and efficiency is the pre-production version of the new diesel plug-in hybrids in the C- and E-Class. It marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has paired an externally chargeable hybrid system with a diesel engine. The union of the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine with the latest-generation 9-speed 9G-TRONIC hybrid transmission sets a notable technology highlight. 90 kW of electrical power, an additional 400 Nm of electric torque and electric range of around 50 km in the NEDC will raise the experience of local mobility with zero emissions to a new level. With four body variants, three power levels and two types of powertrain, the C-Class is Mercedes-AMG’s most multi-faceted and successful model range. Extensive upgrades make the entry-level models, C 43 4MATIC Saloon (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 209 g/km ) and Estate (fuel consumption combined: 9.4 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 214 g/ km2), now even more attractive. The AMG grille featuring the twin-blade design, the powerfully sculpted front skirt and the new rear skirt with round double end pipes provide visual enhancement to the new C 43 models and position them even more expressively. The interior benefits from the optional fully digital cockpit with exclusive AMG instruments and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now produces 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and rearbiased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the potent drivetrain combines agile performance with long-distance comfort. “The new C-Class is available with most of the comfort attributes of the S-Class, all of its intelligent drive features – including its automated driving functions – and even more driving fun,” says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “We believe plug-in hybrids are more than a bridging technology. With our modular Mercedes engine portfolio, we can create a perfect electrified solution for every application. We will have more than 50 electrified vehicle variants by 2022.”

smart EQ fortwo und forfour – innovative, intelligent and electric Mercedes-Benz Cars is starting its electric offensive precisely where it is most urgently needed – in the city. The aim is the electrification of everyday life – across the board. Presented in Geneva alongside smart EQ were the “smart EQ control” apps and the 22 kW rapid charger. A-Class – the benchmarks in the compact class The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is as young and dynamic as ever, but more grown up and comfortable than ever before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class and revolutionises design from the inside. Technologically, the new A-Class sets itself at the very forefront not only with MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience – but also with a range of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class, enabling semi-automated driving in certain situations for the first time.

It enables the high-voltage battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in under 40 minutes. It will be available from May and will cost 840 euros . All smart vehicles with electric drive come with a 4.6 kW on-board charger as standard. This provides for fast recharging of a drained battery – in less than 3.5 hours at a wallbox, in under six hours at a domestic wall socket (10-80 percent in each case). The “smart control” app enables convenient remote monitoring of the charging process and remote control of functions such as intelligent charging. From May 2018, a particularly powerful 22 kW fast charger will be available as an option in Europe. This makes it possible for the smart fortwo (combined power consumption of 22 kW on-board charger with fast charging function: 13.5 – 12.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km), smart fortwo cabrio (combined power consumption: 13.5 – 13.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/ km) and smart forfour (combined power consumption: 14.0 – 13.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) to be charged in a considerably shorter time: in less than 40 minutes (10-80 percent) when local conditions permit three-phase charging. Furthermore, smart offers a wallbox as a special item of equipment. Intelligent support for smart EQ fortwo and smart EQ forfour smart EQ control app: The perfect digital companion smart is simplifying access to electric mobility: the Geneva Motor Show will witness the premiere of the new smart EQ control app - the digital extension of the smart EQ fortwo and smart EQ forfour. This app combines numerous items of car-related information, such as the current charge level and the control of vehicle functions such as pre-entry climate control, and displays the corresponding information in personalised form. The new features further include intelligent push notifications which provide the user with anticipatory suggestions, and a link to the smart “ready to” services. The new smart EQ control app is simple, straightforward and entertaining in typical smart style. After registering, the customer has access to the current vehicle status in personalised form. Personalisation includes the local weather and a stylised screen background citing the vehicle’s current surroundings, both on the basis of the vehicle’s GPS position to which the user has granted access. The depicted smart EQ fortwo or smart EQ forfour corresponds to the owner’s original vehicle in terms of paintwork and equipment, for example. Various sections are available within the app: CONNECT offers the functions of an on-board computer. The user can call up their vehicle’s current status at any time by smartphone. Displayed information includes charge level, range and whether the tyre pressure is correct, for example. CONTROL enables functions such as pre-entry climate control to be operated conveniently from anywhere via the app. Additional remote functions are planned. COMFORT uses push notifications to inform smart drivers if, for example, the state of charge of the battery is very low. The app’s scope of functions also includes a link to the innovative smart “ready to” services. Charging at public facilities is important for many electric smart customers. With this in mind, in future users of the smart EQ control app will have a straightforward means of charging their smart EQ fortwo or smart EQ forfour at around 60,000 charging stations throughout Europe and of paying for their electricity, without having to register with various portals and carry various charging cards. Another feature is implementation of the eco score in a fun guise: the eco score indicates to smart drivers how they can optimise their driving style. It is calculated on the basis of acceleration, consistent driving style and coasting. The smart EQ control app is expected to be available in five languages for smartphones with iOS and Android from mid 2018.

Private car sharing by app goes live Launch of smart “ready to share” Following successful beta testing in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Munich and Frankfurt, smart is now officially launching private car sharing by app. The “ready to” package, which is required as hardware for the service, is now optionally available for the smart fortwo and smart forfour in combination with combustion engine and electric drive in Germany, Italy and France. The first smart vehicles to be fitted with this equipment will reach showrooms in June. smart has drawn on the feedback from the community in its further development of smart “ready to” and will continue to do so for future updates. smart “ready to share” makes private car sharing as simple, safe and straightforward as using car2go. Authorised users can open friends’ smart vehicles in a matter of seconds, using their smartphone. smart “ready to share” is smartphone-based and uses the vehicle’s “keyless entry” function. The connectivity box integrated in the dashboard communicates for this purpose with the smart “ready to” app, which is also accessible via a link from the new smart EQ control app. The “ready to” package is available in conjunction with the Cool & Media package for 199 euros and in conjunction with the Cool & Audio package for 299 euros4. Simple, safe and straightforward usage via an app The smart owner can enter the times when the vehicle will be available and invite friends and colleagues to use it. The friends and colleagues will be sent an email, allowing them to register and create an account. The people defined by the smart driver can then book the vehicle via the app and open it with their smartphone. The app acts as a digital vehicle log, making car sharing straightforward, transparent and safe for all users. The smart owner can also activate a “Home zone”, specifying where the vehicle should be returned to. As a final step, the owner must ensure that a vehicle key is left inside the smart so that the activated users can drive it. At the end of the trip, the vehicle is locked via the app and the booking is ended. The vehicle is then released again for all other users. In addition to friends and members of the family, smart “ready to share” is also aimed at small businesses, freelancers and offices. Vehicle owners can share not only the vehicle, but also the attendant costs with other users. smart is currently developing various price models to this end. Billing is simple and straightforward, via the smart “ready to” app. smart has drawn on the feedback from the community in its further development of smart “ready to”. Accordingly, it has responded to the wish for the necessary hardware to be integrated inconspicuously into the vehicle, for example. smart “ready to”: innovative urban mobility services For six years now, smart has been complementing its mobility products with customer-friendly services. To promote the swift development and implementation of creative projects in the field of urban mobility, smart established the smart lab as the brand’s think tank in 2016. smart “ready to” stands for a host of services designed to make life in the city easier. In addition to the smart “ready to share” private car sharing function, this new smart service strategy already includes the “ready to rent” hire concept, the smart “ready to drop” and smart “ready to drop+” in-car delivery services, and the smart “ready to park+” parking space service. Further innovative services are being developed in the smart lab. With “over the air” updates, they will be gradually made available to smart drivers with the “ready to” package.

Quick solving of car-theft cases thanks to app-based service “theft recovery”

Stuttgart It can happen easily, especially in unfamiliar big cities: You don’t remember exactly where you parked the car. The new “ready to spot” service in the ‘ready to’ app of smart solves this problem conveniently and offers additional functions that make getting back to the car easier. However, should finding it fail because the smart is really gone due to the fact that it was stolen, the new “theft recovery” service helps to communicate with the authorities and recover the smart. As of mid-June both services are available in the ‘ready to’ app free of charge and can be activated there. The new “ready to spot“ service automatically saves the GPS position of the smart, if the customer has activated the service and has parked the car. If needed, the app guides the owner back to his car. Depending on the distance, the app also suggest the best and most convenient way via moovel to get back to the car – for example, with car2go or mytaxi or by bus and train. The booking is also made very simply by app. Other elements integrated into the app are a reminder function for when the paid parking period expires, and the flashing function: It facilitates finding the vehicle at night, because it flashes its indicators as soon as you approach your car and push a button in the app. With the help of “ready to spot“, the parked smart can also easily be made the meeting point for friends or family, because the app allows sharing the current position with others. “theft recovery”: Support following the car theft Rude awakening: The parking spot is empty, the car apparently stolen. And if you’re hit, you’re grateful for any help. The new “theft recovery“ service in the ‘ready to’ app of smart begins even earlier. Users are able to put a virtual fence (geofence) around their parked smart. The owner is alerted via the app when he has activated the service and the vehicle leaves the area specified in this way.   Next, he activates the “theft recovery“ mode in the app, which guides him through all necessary steps: from reporting the theft to police to contacting the smart customer service. On explicit request of the customer this service activates the live tracking and contacts the police: Police are then able to identify the current position of the stolen smart, which significantly increases the chances of recovery, of course.

20 years of smart – an idea wins through

Stuttgart. Twenty years ago, one of the most unusual production vehicles ever was launched onto the market. It was recognisably different to conventional cars – the smart city coupé, which today goes by the name of the smart fortwo and has been on the market in its third generation since 2014. Measuring barely over two and a half metres in length, the compact two-seater fitted crossways into parking spaces and established a whole new class of its own. Back in 1997 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, smart demonstrated its own unique answers to issues of urban individual mobility which today are more acute than ever. Production began in July 1998, and 20 years on it is apparent that the idea has caught on in a big way, with over 2.2 million smarts sold to date. Thanks to its technical innovations and a design combining functionality with joie de vivre, the smart has become a cult car. And smart remains true to its pioneering role: smart is the first car brand with its sights set on a clean-cut switchover from combustion engines to electric drive. “Ever since it was established, smart has been a pioneer of the automobile industry - on all fronts: from the revolutionary vehicle concept through the trailblazing plant architecture in Hambach to the latest development - the brand’s focus on all-electric drive systems,” notes long-standing smart boss Dr Annette Winkler. “20 years of smart – first and foremost, this is the success story of our team and dealers, who have put their expertise, creativity and dedication into improving the quality of life in the city.”

The models also come up trumps with regard to maximum space packed into minimal dimensions, as documented by the excellent body space index. This describes the ratio of interior to exterior length, whereby the interior length is measured from the accelerator pedal in unused position along a horizontal line to the rear end, as a simple means of comparison between different vehicles. Both models attain top ratings for this criterion: 75% (smart fortwo) and 77% (smart forfour).

Following the smart fortwo’s initial launch in Germany and eight other European countries, it is now available in 46 countries across the globe.

The smart fortwo cabrio followed in 2016. Its “tritop” folding soft top enables unique flexibility: at the touch of a button the smart fortwo cabrio is transformed from a closed two-seater into a car with a large sliding canvas sunroof, or a fully-fledged cabriolet with the soft top completely open. This enables the fresh air driving experience to be adapted to the weather or the driver’s mood.

The current, third generation was launched in 2014. The smart fortwo has undergone improvements in virtually all areas and is markedly more comfortable. The signature smart rearmounted engine is now also available for the first time in the four-seater smart. The smart fortwo and smart forfour are clearly recognisable as members of the same family. Many design features such as the headlamps, the cooling air grille in the front and the iconic tridion safety cell are identical, for example. Short overhangs, a minimal length and a high steering angle are optimal prerequisites for ensuring that the smart models get around every corner and into every parking space. When it comes to the turning circle, the smart fortwo sets a new benchmark: at 6.95 m (from kerb to kerb) and 7.30 m (from wall to wall) it makes turning manoeuvres extremely simple. And the smart forfour turns almost as compactly as the previous fortwo generation (wall to wall: 8.75 m). Its statistics are 8.65 m (kerb to kerb) and 8.95 m (wall to wall).

18

The engine and motor line-up for all three smart models includes state-of-the-art three-cylinder petrol engines rated at 52 kW/71 hp (fuel consumption, combined: 5.2-4.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 120-111 g/km ) and 66 kW/90 hp (fuel consumption, combined: 5.4-5.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 133-115 g/km1). There is a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or the twinamic automatic dual-clutch transmission.

smartville: model European plant in Hambach The smart fortwo is produced at a purpose-built plant in the French town of Hambach – a clear commitment to Europe as a manufacturing base. The smart plant, also known as smartville, began production in 1997. On-site system partners deliver modules, some of which are prefabricated, directly to the assembly line. In some instances they install their prefabricated modules in the smart themselves. This minimises the scope of transport and logistics operations. Flexibility, just-in-time delivery and minimum delivery times at all levels are among the factors that set benchmarks to this day. There is close cooperation between the smart plant in Hambach and Novo Mesto, the Renault production location in Slovenia at which the smart forfour is produced under the partnership agreement between smart and Renault. The involvement of the production and quality experts from the Hambach plant ensures that all vehicles of the current smart generation meet the smart quality standards, irrespective of where they are produced.   A milestone: 20 years of smart The developers at Mercedes-Benz were already occupying themselves with the “car of the future” back at the beginning of the 1970s, evolving new, revolutionary approaches which ultimately led to the concept of the super-compact automobile with a length of two and a half metres. Some time passed before the pioneering safety concept was developed which allowed hallmark Mercedes safety to be achieved in an extremely short automobile. In 1989, Nicolas G. Hayek, the inventor of the Swatch wristwatch, announced his intention to launch a small city car on the market. In order to turn this idea into successful reality, Hayek sought out Mercedes-Benz as an experienced partner. The two partners duly established Micro Compact Car AG, with its headquarters in Biel, Switzerland. The smart city coupé finally had its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 1997. Production and sales began in 1998. In the same year, smart became a whollyowned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG (now Daimler AG). Already a classic today: on show at the Museum of Modern Art since 2002 Despite its young age, there is no disputing that the smart fortwo with its unique character is already a classic automobile. While still in production, a smart fortwo was the only vehicle to find its way into the permanent collection of the world-famous Museum of Modern Art in New York as a “contemporary design classic from the final decade of the last century”.

Event Review

smart 20th Anniversary

June 30th 2018 was a very special date in the smart diary. Time really does ‘fly by’ and amazingly, this date marked the 20th Anniversary of smart. Following the announcement by Dr Annette Winkler in Salou, Spain during smart times 2017, smart owners and enthusiasts were invited to smartville, Hambach in France to celebrate the 20th Birthday of smart. As many of our readers will know, smartville located in Hambach, France was not only the birthplace of smart, it is the venue to which thesmartclub ran its annual pilgrimage to enable Members to see the spectacular production lines and ‘just in time’ assembly logistics of smart and their partners within the custom built and highly automated complex. Of course, the location is a fully operational production facility and, although this 20th Birthday celebration was never labelled as a ‘smart times’ event, there has been weeks and months of speculation across the global smart communities about the event, the logistics of holding such an event at a production venue and how this would all ‘come together’. A number of custom factory tours were made available to groups of smart enthusiasts arriving in and around Hambach in the days preceding the celebrations on 30th June. These production tours, split into groups by language, provided the opportunity to see inside the factory complex and production lines. These tours proved highly popular for both new and regular participants with the final tours taking place Friday 29th June. I was attending a previously arranged meeting with smart on June 29th and, after that meeting, I was fortunate enough to have a preview of the ‘party’ venue for the 30th Anniversary celebrations, the stage and catering facilities. On the basis this was all happening within the production site, the layout, stage area and facilities were well organized with good logistics. The 20th Anniversary celebrations were shaping up well with attendees for the event travelling across Europe to attend the party. In addition, there were enthusiasts from many other countries around the world including Russia, Mexico and China meaning that accommodation in the areas surrounding Hambach and Saarbrucken were booked months in advance of the event. A number of local camping sites were fully booked and acted as ongoing ‘party venues’ prior to and following the official celebrations itself.

Friday 29th June On the evening of Friday 29th June, smart employees as part of ‘the smart factory team’ organized a superb independent and private event as a precursor to the main Birthday celebrations the following day. The team had run a well-organized publicity and Registration process via their Facebook page in the weeks leading up to end June with around 200 ‘tickets’ available. The evening itself took place in the nearby town of Sarreguemines, just off the main square in a wonderful venue ‘La Brasserie des Arts’ in Rue Poincaré. An area in front of the Brasserie had been cordoned off and entrance to the Brasserie was available using a previously allocated ticket. Guests befitted from a welcome drink, excellent buffet and super music for the rest of the evening. Dr Annette Winkler also arrived to show her support. It was an excellent evening, superbly well organised and huge thanks to all involved with the smart factory team for this additional highlight of the week.

Event Review

smart 20th Anniversary continued...

Saturday 30th June The Saturday morning saw beautiful weather and lots of sun. Any concern about the ‘open air’ nature of the venue was soon put to one side as the sun burst into the morning sky on 30th June and temperatures moved to match the date, rising to 30+ degrees C. It was hot… super hot. Parking areas had been clearly signed and ensured that those smarts participating in the mini corso rallies later in the afternoon parked to one side of the factory complex whilst the remaining cars (smart or otherwise) parked in the main car park area just outside the gatehouse area to the factory complex. This smart event had an additional ‘special’ element to it – it was the first major event when large numbers of those individuals and their families working at smartville had the chance to spend time with the customers of their product, namely smart car owners – it really completed the ‘family’ feel to this iconic brand. Security around the complex was tight and although thorough, the process of admission through the gates was efficient and made all the better by the distribution of a wide range of smart hats offering protection from the ever-hotter sun. People had started arriving at the complex before 10:00hrs and by 11:30 the venue was buzzing with packed bench seating, food and drink and a huge range of national flags representing the diverse and international range of smart enthusiasts packing the venue.

The UK had excellent representation at the event occupying up to 4 large table areas spread across the main event area – just under 50 cars made the trip with many extending their stay after the Birthday event and travelling onwards to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Following the introductions of each country present accompanied by some vigorous ceremonial flag waving, Dr Annette Winkler arrived on stage to officially open the event. The staging itself and event setup was effective and the layout, coupled with additional screens to the left and right of the main stage screen, ensured that there was an inclusive feel to what was happening. The on-stage sessions covered the history of smart and celebrated those people who had made it all possible. This was more than a history lesson however – the proceedings were enhanced by a number of key individuals who made the story of smart come to life by also appearing on stage. This included the original designer and engineer of smart, Johann Tomforde. He was on stage in addition to a number of key individuals involved over the years who helped make smart what it is today. Readers of ‘4site’ will also be aware of the long and successful link between smart and BRABUS in Bottrop. Indeed, the original plans for thesmartclub’s 2018 visit to the smart 20th Anniversary celebrations were to include another visit to the BRABUS smart facilities in the days preceding the smart event. Sadly, Bodo Buschmann, CEO died following a short illness April this year. It was therefore inspiring to see his son, Constantin Buschmann appear on stage as the new CEO and address the smart audience.

The excellent weather ensured that the route was well supported with large numbers of local villagers and their families lining the street to cheer and wave as the ‘tube’ of smarts wound their way through the beautiful countryside. Overall, the 20th Anniversary celebrations of smart were well attended and well organized with great logistics given the complications and security that one had to have within the smartville production facilities.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of smart, an enormous Birthday cake had been made, easily capable of serving over 1500 slices to participants following their corso mini rally scheduled to start mid-afternoon. Adding to the ‘Birthday’ feel, a dedicated song was produced and up-and-coming singer and producer Noah Slee who performed the song live on stage – you can see the and hear this song now via YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=kU0IYMIMkWs

It was wonderful meeting up again with so many friends from multiple countries and engaging with so many smartville employees and their families - one can only hope that smart continues to engage passionately with the dedicated, enthusiastic and equally passionate owners around the world. thesmartclub for sure will continue to bring you the very latest news, views and initiatives from all that is happening in Hambach and Böblingen. Photos (c) smart Factory Team, Christian Greiner and Al Young

Just prior to starting the mini corso rally that afternoon, Dr Annette Winkler introduced the forthcoming new Head of smart, Katrin Adt, who takes over her new role with effect from 1st October. We plan to have a full interview with Katrin later in the year for inclusion in ‘4site’ smart magazine. Dr Winkler finished by providing a very personal on-stage message thanking the workers, families, colleagues, owners and enthusiasts for helping make the smart brand so successful. She then presented her husband Hanns-Michael with a rose that will be planted in their garden at home to remind them of the many successful years at smart. And then, it was time to start the mini corso rally. The smart cars previously parked in the car parks near the main communication centre then lined up to start their journey through the streets and countryside surrounding the smartville complex.

The British Motor Museum in Gaydon

The British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire has world’s largest collection of historic British cars within its impressive building. With nearly 300 cars in its collection charting 120 years of motoring history, it is a ‘must visit’ place for individuals and families who have even the slightest interest in the automotive world. And, of course, thesmartclub also has a link with this iconic venue! Way back in 2005, we celebrated our 5th Anniversary with Russ Swift, driving displays, a wide range of independent smart related 3rd party companies, smart UK, catering and more!

For sure the smart world continues to evolve and change but since 2005 over the following 13 years, the Museum is still a focal point for a gathering of smart cars on an annual basis Helen Mackenzie -Burrows again organized a gathering of what turned out to be an impressive 72 smarts on 14th July. The day was further enhanced by the continued amazing weather across most of the UK for the preceding few weeks. Cars representing virtually every model of smart car attended this year’s gathering and the popularity of this meeting continues to grow - doubtless ensuring that 2019 will be even bigger and better. Back to the Future, but smarter

We are literally in the final process of completing our marketing before the vehicle goes out on tour as part of our Retro-futurist and Steampunk collection, so these are the only photos available at the moment, however, they should be fine. If I could give you a bit more info about the vehicle. We are a model and prop making company based in Wiltshire and specialise in Retro-Futurist and Steampunk machines. We currently have one of the largest collections of Steampunk machines in the uk, all built at our workshops in Swindon. Our main aim with all our builds in to come up with something different. The Smart car idea was born from two elements, one a love of the smart car and two a desire to build a Back to the Future car. We already work closely with owners of the Delorean so not wanting to simply produce another one we opted for something very different, something guaranteed to make you smile. The Delorean was chosen for the film as it was an iconic car of the time, what better car than a Smart Coupe to bring this design into the 21 century. One of the main design challenges for the car was the Gull wing doors, it simply could not have normal or scissor wing doors. Once we worked out how to lift the doors and keep the overall look of the Smart door intact the project was started. The chases of the car has been untouched, it is a MCC 2002 Smart Coupe in all its percent glory. Thousands of LED’s have been added to get the car to glow in the dark and give it the classic BTTF car look.

28

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

Because the Smart is a City car the BTTF design had to change and we had to have some fun. Gone is the Mr Fusion, replaced with a working cappuccino machine, lets face it how would the City run without coffee. Inside the Flux capacitor has been replaced with our BIC Capacitor, making links with The hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy and “whatever happened to all the biros”, it is a City car. The time panel on the dash is all touch screens and the cockpit is full of buttons to press. All our vehicle interiors are also optimised for the visual impaired having lots of brail tags and tactile experiences. The car even sports a huge 1000w rms sound system which was a challenge in itself to fit in the car. Another challenge was the whitewalls give how skinny the Smarts tyres are. Everything about the car makes comical links to films and puts a simile on your face. The car will be touring the UK very soon so check out our Facebook feed for dates. Halo nightclub

The drive code for the Halo nightclub in Bournemouth is definitely smart, according to its owner Ty Temel, who has just taken delivery of his sixth one as part of the venue’s ongoing business partnership with smart at Mercedes-Benz of Poole. “It’s absolutely perfect for the testing Bournemouth town driving, is easy to park, effortless to drive and is ideal for personal use or business,” said Ty, a self-confessed car enthusiast. “From a commercial point of view, any local business should seriously consider one as you can pick them up for sensible money per month and once sign-written they are a moving billboard. Think about how much you’d need to pay for the exposure you get from a smart? “It’s an absolute no brainer for me and our businesses,” he concluded.

smart EQ fortwo e-cup trophy

thesmartclub is delighted to be supporting the Italian smart EQ fortwo e-cup trophy race series. The ‘smart EQ fortwo e-cup’ trophy is the first 100% electric single-brand race series launched in Italy earlier this month at the Milan Rally Show. “smart interprets electric mobility in its best dimension: agility and shooting for uncompromising driving pleasure and zero local emissions,” said Lucio Tropea, smart & innovation sales Senior Manager Italy. “Bringing the smart fortwo e-cup EQ trophy into the urban context is a new expression of our commitment to farsighted cities like Milan where we want to build, together with local administrations, the mobility of the future” To make the e-cup smart even more competitive and compliant with the latest FIA safety requirements for motorsport, the LPD team in Italy has modified the smart EQ fortwo with a number of enhancements, the most visible of which is a new aerodynamic kit. The overall weight of the race car drops significantly from 900 kg to 750kg thanks to a number of carbon parts. The introduction of the roll-cage in combination with the tridion cell, represents a further element for the safety of the drivers. The two seats give way to a single racing seat and the set-up has been modified for competition with the adoption of new springs and new shock absorbers. “The smart fortwo e-cup EQ trophy opens a new door to the world of motorsport,” said Massimo Arduini, CEO of LPD. “A new concept that manages to combine fun and competition, also accessible to many young people looking for an opportunity to enter the circus of competitions, from 16 years of age.” The first full race of the series too place on 24th June at the Misano World Circuit in Italy following the postponement of the previously planned opening races in Turin (June 8th – 10th). The smart EQ fortwo e-cup championship has officially started with the sixteen drivers facing the first race on the San Marino track. The cars with zero emissions covered eight laps in the 18 minutes predicted. The first five laps had a single protagonist, Marco Panzavuota (Lpd) who started from pole position defended the first position from the pursuers, only to spin in the course of the fifth lap in which Fulvio Ferri took advantage and took control of the race. Ferri maintained the first position up to the finish line and behind was Antonino Cannavò, who recovered positions thus also ensuring victory for the “Gentleman” class for drivers over 50. On the third step of the podium was Piergiorgio Capra, who managed to grab third place recovering important ground against Fulvio Marengo (Roma Gas and Power), fourth. A great fifth place for Marco Bronzetti “Marchettino” (Sport Mediaset). In eighth position Silvia Sellani (Mercedes-Benz Rome) arrived thanks to a brilliant performance. Roman placed was in front of Marco Panzavuota, only ninth despite the positive first part of the race and Marches is followed by the other woman at the wheel of the Mercedes home car, Silvia Simoni (Merfina). The 17-year-old has hit the top 10 winning the “Junior” class (Under 21), while her direct opponent in this category Gianalberto Francesco Coldani (Merfina) closed the fifteenth place. Mauro Garbarino (Mercedes-Benz Dealership) crossed the finish line in eleventh position followed by Vittorio Ghirelli (Mercedes-Benz Rome), Lorenzo Longo (Sind Neurottimo) and Andrea Stassano (Pirelli). Franco Gallina (Funk) concludes the classification. Information courtesy of Lug Prince and Decker, Italy

smart EQ fortwo e-cup trophy - Milan The Milan Rally Show ended with a positive outcome on 29th July and the smart EQ fortwo e-cup championship gave a great show in the four special stages that the drivers faced across the three different circuits set up for the occasion . The action on Sunday began at “IL CENTRO” of Arese, and then moved for the two central tests at the ‘Park Experience Area Expo’, finishing at the Velodromo Vigorelli (City Life Area) where the 14 crews remaining in the race entertained the crowds. Success in Milan, in which an electric mono-brand championship participated, was achieved by the LPD team with Giuseppe Bodega and Marco Panzavuota, who got the best lap time in 47’42.4 with a two second margin on the second place team. It was the team composed by Alberto Lembo and Antonio Massimiliano d’Amico who took the second step of the podium of this “electrifying” adventure, while Piergiorgio Capra and Sofia Cardarelli finished in third position, more than 13 seconds behind the winners. The prize in the Women’s class was won by Rachele Somaschini, who, thanks to her vast motor racing experience, achieved a brilliant fourth position in the overall classification. Rachele drove the smart EQ fortwo e-cup of the MercedesBenz dealership Gino accompanied by the navigator Luana Boero. The Junior class was won by Silvia Simoni (Merfina), the only junior driver on track after Gianalberto Coldani left the first special stage of the weekend. Finally, in the Senior class, was Alberto Lembo. This second round of the smart EQ fotwo e-cup championship ended with great success and a lot of fun where drivers were able to show their skills in front of the crowds attending the Milan Rally Show. The trophy will be back on track Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September during the third round at the Autodromo di Vallelunga (Campagnano - Rome) where the “zero-emission” city cars will return to the track

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

Earlier this year, a new service for UK based smart car owners launched helping such owners to find a smart service or repair centre in a location to suit them. The ‘Help my smart’ online service allows users to select a geographic location, address, town, postcode of even part of a desired Retailer or Independent 3rd party company name. With full Google map functionality, once the desired area has been selected, markers identify smart Retailers and/or 3rd party companies who may be able to assist. A ‘pin’ on the map identifies the specific location of each such company and, when clicked, will offer full contact details and a direct link to that Retailer or 3rd party web site. As the service uses Google Maps, one can zoom to street level and use Google Street View to locate the premises. Retailers and 3rd Party companies (Independents) are further categorised indicating whether a company is a ‘Featured Retailer’ or ‘Featured Independent’. Such ‘Featured’ companies have further details, offers and promotions available via thesmartclub’s web site and/or ‘4site’ smart Magazine.

Issue 38 - 2018 - www.thesmartclub.co.uk

The service is providing incredibly popular with over 400 unique visitors per day visiting the service and this is increasing exponentially each month. You can find out more at www.helpmysmart.com or, if you are unable to access the web, you can contact thesmartclub directly on +44 (0) 749-383-1430.
