Welcome In this issue of ‘4site’ smart Magazine, we are pleased to bring you an extensive range of the latest news from smart including a look at the stunning concept smart forease and the amazing BRABUS 125R providing the lucky owners with 92kW/125hp of raw power and 200 Nm of torque.

We also cover the smart fortwo pureblack edition as seen at the Paris show late last year and bring you the latest from the 2019 Geneva motor show.

Al Young Editor, Chairman & Managing Director thesmartclub ltd thesmartclub ltd. 1 Corbiehill Park Edinburgh EH4 5EQ UK Tel: +44 (0) 749-383-1430

All this in addition to the latest news, views and reviews from the world of smart ownership. As always, we are delighted to be supporting the world of smart related motorsport, comprising not only the UK fortwocup series of events, but we’ll be following the entire series of smart EQ e-cup series of races in Italy. There has been a superb series of developments with the 100% electric smart within the motorsport world and, taking advantage of the winter months, there has been a series of rallycross testing taking place in Italy. The first of these amongst the snow- and ice-covered terrain of Livigno offering the drivers and teams the chance to prepare and develop the cars on suitably ‘exciting’ surfaces in advance of a broader rallycross series in 2019. That series launched in Milan at the Maggiora track where the LPD team were able to develop their 100% electric drive cars further – one of the innovative and unique developments being the use of a self-locking differential, ideally suited to these rally (rather than race) environments. The smart Racing Club will be engaged in and be reporting back upon all the e-cup series throughout 2019 via The smart Racing Club web site, 4site smart magazine and, of course, thesmartclub site.

Complimenting the developments within the smart arena, Katrin Adt, Head of smart, recently completed her first 100 days in role. From April there will be an international smart fan page where there will be a range of updates about the smart brand. In addition, there will be a shift from the organisational and creative activities of the annual international smart meetings away from smart who will now delegate these activities to a specific smart club each year. The way this will work is that each smart club can apply for official smart sponsorship to organise the annual smart meeting. The sponsorship package not only includes financial support but also communication and brand material. The first opportunity to pitch will be in the summer of 2019 for the smart meeting that will take place in 2020 and there will be further information made available via smart’s Facebook page. The first meeting under this new initiative will take place in conjunction with the smart Club Norway from July 4th to July 7th 2019. The venue will be the Haraldshaugen Camping area, Krossvelen 5, 5515, Haugesund, Norway. Additional information is available from the smart Club Norway Facebook page. You can be sure we’ll be bringing you the images and reviews of that even in the next issue of 4site. Meantime, if you have any special feature, news or images you would like to have included in the next issue of 4site smart magazine, simply use any one of the ‘Contact us’ methods included in this magazine or contact me directly at al@thesmartclub.com Best wishes Al Young Chairman & Managing Director thesmartclub ltd

smart forease: As uncompromising and fresh as the brand

Stuttgart/Paris. smart celebrates its 20 anniversary at the Paris Motor Show (4 to 14 October) with a show car that interprets and embodies urban driving fun in a refreshing way. The smart forease is extroverted and offers an uncomplicated solution for urban mobility. Seated under the open sky, the driver is at the centre of the hustle and bustle of the city, in which, thanks to the electric drive, they can freely participate. The openness and minimalistic style are a tribute to the pioneering smart concept vehicles “crossblade” (2001) and “forspeed” (2011). Everyone knows that smart is practical. That smart is cool will be made clear to visitors at the Paris Motor Show by the smart forease show car. Reduced to the essential, it is uncompromisingly open, pays no heed to convention and is, of course, powered by an electric powertrain. It takes up the original motto of smart, reduce to the max, with a twinkle in its eye, standing for the authentic urban mobility that continues to be the underlying concept behind the brand. Both the smart brand and the smart forease stand for emotionality, lifestyle and attitude. The vehicle owes its unconventional beauty to the opening of the interior to its environment, the absence of a roof and the shorter windscreen. With its radiant, dramatic metallic-white and colour accents in “stream green”, the smart forease promises a carefree driving experience, freed from convention, yet in harmony with its surroundings. “The smart forease embodies a refreshingly simple form of driving fun in the city, standing for urban electric mobility without compromise – because, if in doubt, smart always opts for a consistent approach. The result is a sustainable driving experience built on freedom,” says Katrin Adt, new Head of smart from October. “The smart forease is proof that smart thinks unconventionally. Its design is reduced and pure,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Daimler AG. “The smart forease is a statement of urbanity and individual style. It has the coolness of the metropolis and demonstrates a truly free spirit.”

smart forease: As uncompromising and fresh as the brand continued... The design: uncompromisingly open based on the smart EQ fortwo cabrio The designers bring the smart brand aesthetic to life with the smart forease, creating a light-heartedness that results from the unconventional approach typical of smart (ease by being unconventional): unconventional beauty, lightness and energy (energizing lightness) are achieved by reduction to the essential (clever reduction). Like the concept vehicles “crossblade” (2001) and “forspeed” (2011) before it, the smart forease pays no heed to the convention that a car generally has a roof. It is open to the sun’s rays and the wind, allowing its passengers to enjoy a liberated and pure driving experience. The shorter windscreen offers little resistance to the headwind. The smart forease cleverly focuses on what is essential for urban driving enjoyment. Its manoeuvrability and relaxed openness exert a liberating and invigorating effect on the occupants. Safety comes courtesy of the two domes behind the seats. The door handles, which are seamlessly recessed in the door, make for an elegant touch. The smart forease has a paint finish in effect-rich metallic-white. This offers a subtle contrast with the matt-silver Tridion cell and the brilliant “stream green” accents both inside and outside. Some of these are instantly noticeable, such as the contrasting green decorative seams on the upholstery, the green border around the media interface and the “stream green” contrast surfaces on the sides of the seats. Others become apparent at second glance from certain angles, such as the green honeycomb look inside the air vents plus further details on the headlamps and wheels.

6

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

The open vehicle concept produces a link between exterior and interior, the entire play of colour being at all times in evidence. The interior therefore contributes to the exterior impact of the vehicle. This is also reflected in technical details in the interior. A particular feature is the two round displays in place of centre air vents in the instrument panel – as if there were not already enough fresh air! The displays can be used, for example, to present content from the “ready to” app, which allows the driver to share their smart with friends or to monitor its functions. The speakers of the audio system, which provide a perfect sound for listening to music or making phone calls, are visibly integrated in the rear wall of the cockpit, emphasising the car’s cool, playful character. The smart forease is based on the standard-production smart EQ fortwo cabrio and can therefore be driven. It is a tribute to the two earlier concept vehicles crossblade (2001) and forspeed (2011). It also affords a preview of the electric future of the smart brand. smart is the first automotive brand with its sights set on a systematic switch from the combustion engine to the electric drive: since 2017, smart has been selling only electric vehicles in the USA, Canada and Norway. From 2020, it will be marketing only battery-electric cars in Europe, too. The rest of the World is due to follow soon after. The smart forease makes it clear that electric cars for use in the city will be anything but boring. 2002: smart crossblade for total openness This is an area where only few concept vehicles have succeeded: unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2001, the “Crossblade” show car met with such an overwhelming response that smart decided to go into series production with it. From 2002, a small batch of 2000 units was characterised by total openness. The smart crossblade had no doors, roof or windscreen. Its driver was able to drive through the countryside under open skies with the wind in their face for an incomparable driving experience. A narrow, tinted wind deflector, extending across the cockpit area, was all there was to counteract the headwind. 2011: smart forspeed is open and electric Ten years after the crossblade, smart unveiled another open concept vehicle. The smart forspeed was not intended for series production, but as a radical forerunner of the smart electric drive, which was to come out just a few months later. The forspeed combined contemporary urban mobility with the typical smart fun factor. With no roof or side windows, the two-seater featured a low-profile wind deflector instead of a windscreen in the style of a classic propeller aircraft. The result was an incomparable fresh air experience. Further driving pleasure was guaranteed by the responsive, further-developed electric drive with boost function.

BRABUS 125R: Pocket Rocket! Exclusive edition of 125 open-top turbo city sports cars with 92 kW / 125 hp, 200 Nm of torque, 175 km/h top speed, extra-dynamic handling and luxurious interior smart BRABUS GmbH celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2017. To mark this special occasion, the company developed a club sport version of the current smart fortwo for the racetrack. Not only did the Mercedes-Benz works race drivers have great fun with the sportiest smart fortwo variant of all times on the rollercoaster circuit of the German test track Bilster Berg, but so did representatives of international media outlets as well. The dynamic two-seater had earned its moniker after just a few laps: ìPocket Rocket,î as an homage to the most powerful and fastest BRABUS supercars. Ever since the BRABUS ROCKET based on the Mercedes CLS-Class (C 219) set a new world record for street-legal sedans in 2006 with a top speed of 365.7 km/h (227.2 mph), they have been going by this nickname.

8

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

The BRABUS 125R edition limited to 125 vehicles now presents a variant of the track racer that is designed for public roads but delivers nearly the identical driving dynamics. BRABUS 125R emblems on the body and in the interior, where a ĂŹ1 of 125ĂŽ badge additionally highlights the exclusivity of this special edition, indicate the noble lineage of this speedster to insiders. The donor car is the current smart fortwo cabrio, whose three-cylinder turbo engine was uprated by BRABUS to a peak output of 92 kW / 125 hp (123 bhp) and a peak torque of 200 Nm (148 lb-ft). As a result, the twoseater sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 9.2 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h (109 mph). To be able to keep this performance safely in check at all times, the BRABUS 125R is equipped with tailor-made aerodynamic-enhancement components, YOKOHAMA high-performance tires in 16/17-inch combinations, and a lowered suspension.

BRABUS 125R: Pocket Rocket! continued...

The special model comes in two colors, glossy black or matte titanium. On the black variant, the bright red BRABUS bodywork components at the front, sides and rear stand out immediately. On the titanium-colored vehicles, these components have a black finish. A BRABUS black leather interior with precise special quilting and perforation on the seat surfaces, all finished with perfect workmanship in very detail, as well as a host of other exclusive features ensure a special ambience in the cockpit. The BRABUS 125R, whose extensive lineup of equipment of course also includes a ì1 of 125î limited-edition badge in the cockpit, a climate control system, a sound system and a navigation system, sells for 39,900 euro. All information about this exclusive city sports car is available on the internet at www.brabus125r.com. The heart of the BRABUS 125R, the three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with a displacement of 898 cc (54.8 cu in), also lives up to the sporty character of this exclusive special model as a matter of course. To achieve the desired performance increase, the BRABUS powerplant engineers developed a modified intake system, an even more efficient intercooler, and a recalibrated engine control unit. For further performance optimization and for an especially sporty sound at the touch of a button, the engine was fitted with a stainless-steel BRABUS sport exhaust system with actively controlled flaps. To match the three cylinders of the engine, this exhaust system features three center-exiting tailpipes. With a peak output of 92 kW / 125 hp (123 bhp) at 5,550 rpm and a peak torque increased to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft), on tap at a low 2,000 rpm, this engine turns the exclusive two-seater into an open-top city sports car par excellence. Gears in the BRABUS 125R are shifted either automatically or manually like in Formula 1 racing with black anodized BRABUS paddle shifters on the steering wheel. As a result, the exclusive speedster takes just 9.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest. The top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h (109 mph). With this dynamic performance, the BRABUS 125R of course also demands a sporty suspension setup. To this end, the special model is fitted with glossy black BRABUS Monoblock IX alloys sporting eight double-spokes. To add further visual emphasis to the wedge-shaped appearance of the city racer as well, it is equipped with a staggered wheel combination that features 6Jx16 rims with tires of size 185/50 R 16 at the front, and 7Jx17 rims with size 205/40 R 17 tires on the rear axle. Technology partner YOKOHAMA supplies the optimal highperformance tires.

10

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

The BRABUS sport springs, which lower the ride height of the exclusive two-door car by about 30 millimeters (1.2 in), are specifically tailored to this tire/wheel combination. The special wheels were subjected to extensive driving tests and in conjunction with the modified suspension deliver particularly agile and safe handling. Sporty design and even more efficient aerodynamics: The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement kit with ñ depending on the vehicle color ñ bright red or black contrasting elements such as front spoiler, rocker panels and surround for the tailpipes of the sport exhaust makes the exclusive city sports car from Bottrop even more individual. Carbon-design covers for the side mirrors and the tinted third brake light stylishly round off the sporty appearance. The interior design of the BRABUS 125R is equally sophisticated. The contoured sport seats are upholstered with the finest black BRABUS Mastik leather. Contrasting red double seams take up the red bodywork highlights in the cockpit. The seat surfaces feature meticulous diamond quilting and are perforated with pinpoint precision. The appointments of this edition also include the embroidered BRABUS logos in the two head restraints and the two-tone embroidered 125R logos in the seatbacks. The same play of colors as on the seats, complemented by a red 12-oíclock marking made from the hi-tech fiber Dynamica, continues on the steering wheel, whose grips are likewise perforated. Other sporty features are the carbon-design molding for the dashboard, and the aluminum pedals and footrest. Like the shift knob with red BRABUS logo, the handle of the parking brake lever sports a black anodized finish. Other exceptional features of this exclusive special model are the tailor-made scuff plates with BRABUS logo, which like the footrest in the driverís footwell is illuminated in red or white. Classy velour floor mats with red BRABUS logo complete the ambience. The standard specification of the new exclusive two-door car from Bottrop includes a climate control system, a radio and a navigation system, of course. The manufacturerís suggested retail price is 39,900 euro including 19 percent VAT. There is a dedicated website for this exclusive city sports car at www.brabus125r.com. Fuel economy, CO2 emissions and efficiency class: BRABUS 125R based on the smart fortwo: city 5.2 l/100 km, highway 4.1 l/100 km, combined: 4.5 l/100 km. Combined CO2 emissions: 102 g/km, efficiency class B.

smart fortwo | edition pureblack

smart is presenting a particularly stylish variant of the two-seater in Paris in the guise of the “edition pureblack” special model. This limited-edition special model will be available both with the two petrol engines (fuel consumption, combined: 5.0-4.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions, combined: 114-110 g/km) and as an electric smart EQ fortwo (power consumption, combined: 18.3 -13.2 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions, combined: 0 g/km)4. The vehicles painted in matt black are set apart by accent trim parts in high-gloss black and highlights in red. The “edition pureblack” will be available for ordering in the coming months, with deliveries set to begin next year. The special model was inspired by the international design trend to forego colour and combine various shades of black. To set off the black to particularly good effect, the designers have applied red highlights on the inside and outside. These highlights emphasize the matt black paint finish of the bodypanels, the tridion safety cell and most of the detachable parts in velvet black (matt), whose velvety finish contrasts with high-gloss black paintwork featuring on various parts of the vehicle. The smart logo in the radiator grille features a two-tone black painted finish (high-gloss and matt), while a high-gloss black finish features on the edging of the otherwise matt velvet black side skirt, on the rear diffuser (with red highlights) and on the roof spoiler. Exterior red highlights are also to be found on the hand-finished radiator grille, the front spoiler and the 16-inch black alloy wheels. There is a “edition pureblack” logo on the left at the rear (on the petrol-engine model only) and the smart lettering on the rear is in high-gloss deep black. The body design and development partner for the special model is smart BRABUS.

The interior features black leather in hand-crafted quality on the seats, whose red perforations and topstitching are also to be found on the leather multifunction sports steering wheel, together with a red 12 o’clock marking. The handle of the dark anodised handbrake lever is also covered in black leather. The black dashboard comes in leather look. The shift lever knob is anodised in a dark finish and features a “edition pureblack” logo which also cites the black velour floor mats. The standard scope of equipment for the “edition pureblack” also includes the Comfort package (height adjustment of the driver’s seat, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and heightadjustable steering column), the Stowage Space package (lockable glove compartment and stowage net on the centre console in the front passenger footwell) and the LED & Sensor package. The latter comprises H4 halogen headlamps with welcome function, integrated daytime driving lights featuring LED fibre-optic technology and LED tail lamps.Other standard features are heated seats, the Cool & Media package with large multitouch display and automatic climate control, the panoramic roof with integrated sunblind and the load compartment cover. Both petrol-engine versions of the “edition pureblack” come with twinamic as an automatic dual clutch manual transmission with six forward gears. Both clutch actuation and gear changing are fully automatic and enable particularly smooth shifting without any interruption in tractive power. The transmission operates fully automatically. Manual shifting is possible using the selector lever in a separate gate or by means of the shift paddles.

* Electronically limited. smart is currently the only car manufacturer worldwide to offer its model range in both combustion-engine and all-electric variants. And smart is the first car brand with its sights set on a systematic changeover from combustion engine to electric drive: since 2017, smart has been selling only electric vehicles in the USA, Canada and Norway. From 2020, it will be marketing only battery-electric cars in Europe, too. The rest of the World is due to follow soon after. All smart vehicles with electric drive come with a 4.6 kW on-board charger as standard. This provides for fast recharging of a drained battery – in less than 3.5 hours at a wallbox, in under six hours at a domestic wall socket (10-80 percent in each case). The “smart EQ control” app enables convenient remote monitoring of the charging process and remote control of functions such as intelligent charging. A particularly powerful 22 kW fast charger is optionally available in Europe. This enables the smart fortwo EQ to be charged much more quickly: in less than 40 minutes (10-80 percent) when local conditions permit three-phase charging. A smart forfour for the “Best of the Best”: Kristina Vogel

Berlin. Kristina Vogel, two-time Olympic gold medal winner and eleven-time world champion in track cycling, received her new smart forfour prime yesterday (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 l/100 km, CO2 combined emissions: 123-122 g/ km; figures for manual transmission) after being voted “The Best of the Best 2018”. Germany’s top athletes bestowed this title on her at their “Sporthilfe Club der Besten” gathering at the Aldiana Club Costa del Sol in Spain in September 2018. The car has been tailored to Kristina Vogel’s individual needs. The athlete received the keys to her new vehicle from Kirsten Ehrlich, head of smart Sales and Marketing, at the Berlin am Salzufer smart centre.

“I’m delighted with my new car. With the smart forfour I’ll now be mobile around my home town of Erfurt and beyond. That means another bit of normality for me in my everyday life. My new companion is specially geared to my needs and makes driving much easier for me. Many thanks to smart,” said Kristina Vogel at the vehicle handover. Kristina Vogel’s new vehicle has a black/black paint finish. It is agile and great fun to drive, moving its occupants around town with an output of 66 kW (90 hp). It was specially modified in accordance with Kristina Vogel’s needs by KADOMO, a company specialised in converting vehicles for disabled people. Kristina Vogel is one of Germany’s most successful athletes of recent years. The former track cyclist won a total of 21 national titles up to 2017. Her sporting career was crowned by two Olympic gold medals and eleven world championship titles. In 2018 she was paralysed in a tragic accident during training. On 18 February 2019 Kristina Vogel will be a guest at this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.

smart and top-class sport – inseparably linked for years now smart has been a top partner of the annual “Sporthilfe Club der Besten” (previously “Champion des Jahres”) event since 2000. Since 2015, the brand has also been a partner of the German Sports Help Foundation and supports sportspeople, especially up-and-coming youngsters, with particularly attractive offers to keep them mobile. The sponsorship offers top sportspeople excellent opportunities to succeed in modern competitive sports. Germany’s best athletes of a year meet up at the “Sporthilfe Club der Besten” to spend a week recharging their batteries, having fun, doing sport and celebrating their successes together. The highlight is a vote among Germany’s best athletes to choose the “best of the best” from among their ranks. About smart Following the changeover in the USA and Canada, the smart brand will be switching its entire range to electric drives by 2020. This will make smart the first car brand in the world to switch its entire model range from combustion engines to electric drives. The brand will be successively phasing out its models with combustion engines and switching entirely to local emission-free, electric battery-powered drives for the fortwo, fortwo cabrio and forfour models.

#rooflove – the special feature on top Stuttgart/Geneva. It is more than a roof, it is #rooflove. It is more than an addition, it is form and function. The smart forease+, which will be presented at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show (7 to 17 March), is just as scaled back and dynamic as its predecessor – and is more than suited to all weather conditions in cities. The smart forease+ is more than a showcar, it is the embodiment of the smart brand itself: individual, dynamic, sustainable. The smart forease+ shares the uncomplicated, consistent solutions for urban mobility with its predecessor model, the smart forease, which unapologetically leaves the top down and is scaled back to the essentials. It had its world première at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. The smart forease+ logically develops the predecessor’s minimalistic idea with additional form and function. Its flat fabric roof that extends far towards the rear turns the showcar into a cosmopolitan with classic speedster attributes. Drawn down deeply and only just about reaching over the two characteristic domes on the rear, the roof demonstrates what the designers call #rooflove: a completely new look.

The roof’s construction demonstrates a loving attention to detail. A light yet firm fabric hard shell covered in a textile soft top fabric combines many benefits. It is light, robust and yet suitable all year round. The roof is designed to be removable and engages in two cut-outs on the rear which provide an apt reference to the model designation with the “+ push” lettering. “As a stylish and well-thought-out idea, the smart forease+ shows the spirit of the brand: individual, scaled back and sustainable. The showcar is also an impressive statement of coolness and urbanity typical of smart”, states Katrin Adt, head of smart. “The smart forease+ projects its technical and creative intelligence in one clear emotion: #rooflove”, explains Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. “The unconventional concept, the self-confidence and the dynamics: the smart forease+ is a statement for urbanity.” The lack of any form of side windows and the open rear in combination with the shortened windscreen ensures a pure driving experience.

Individual, dynamic, scaled back: The design idiom of the smart forease+ The designers have underscored the showcar’s high emotionality and the special driving feel with many additional features. Even when stationary, the showcar demonstrates its agility with its long ducktail - the spoiler element reminiscent of a duck’s tail - the expressively modelled shoulder line and the flat window section. The sun visor over the short windscreen additionally makes the sideline appear lower. Apart from its direct impact on the car’s design, it is also a homage to earlier showcars such as the smart forstars (2012) and the smart fourjoy (2013). The front lamps are also no longer behind glass, unlike the earlier sources of inspiration. The front lamps in the smart forease+ have three active LED elements that give it a pithy light signature. The multi-dimensional design of the headlamp surrounds additionally underscores the sculptural impact of the lamps. The showcar’s rear lamps provide a further visual and technical highlight. In the rhombic basic geometry familiar from the series production model, several LED light elements multiply the number of contours and thus provide for a particular feeling of depth beneath a high-quality glass cover. This gives rise to an ever-changing light graphic, depending on the viewer’s perspective and position. Meanwhile, a particular feeling of width emanates from the smart forease+ rims. The aerodynamically designed rims ensure that the smart hugs the road. With their clear electric look the wheels underscore the clear commitment to the brand’s electric future. Scaled back, sustainable, grown up: the future of smart The design of the smart forease+ is less playful, and more scaled back and clear. The technical look formed by the body in matt soft coal for particular emphasis on the clear surfaces and the contrasting roof in rough amber are carried through to the interior. Less colour but more extensive colourfulness characterise the overall concept of the smart forease+. One such accent is the instrument panel which is also covered in rough amber coloured nappa leather. The edging of the loudspeakers in the same colour between the front seats and the illuminated seat belt outlets provide further contrasts and visual statements. The selection of other materials in the interior ensures a particularly refined look for the showcar. The seats are covered in a combination of black nappa leather, microfibre and high-quality material for the seating area. The steering wheel, door sills and beltlines are extensively covered with microfibre in anthracite, while the door centre panels are covered in high-quality nappa leather. The high-gloss black highlights of the door handles and the infotainment display are further features. As a connected car, the smart forease+ also integrates the smart “ready to” services and gives its passengers a direct overview of the digital apps at all times. The smart forease+ is based on the smart EQ fortwo cabrio series production model. By 2020 the smart brand will be using electric drives only. This means that smart will be the first automotive brand in the world to completely change over from combustion engines to electric drives. smart will successively reduce its offering of combustion engines and switch fully to the locally emission-free, battery-electric drive for the smart fortwo, smart fortwo cabrio and smart forfour. The smart forease+ underlines this step, showing that the future of smart is anything but boring.

BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 The world’s first performance-tuned electric car as an exclusive “tender” for the new BRABUS 500 recreational craft The world’s first performance-tuned electric car meets a high-performance recreational craft in a class of its own. And both come from the same company: BRABUS! The extravagant BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 celebrates its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show 2019 as a quasi “tender to” the exclusive BRABUS 500 “Shadow OPS” Limited Edition “1 of 28” recreational craft. Since 2016, BRABUS Marine has been cooperating with Axopar, the Finnish manufacturer of high-performance boats, and at the beginning of the year presented already its second own craft, which will be sold in a limited edition of 28 boats. The agile city sports car that goes with this boat is based on the smart EQ fortwo cabrio and thanks to its electric motor uprated to 68 kW / 92 hp (91 bhp) with four different drive modes it is the first vehicle of its category with motor tuning.

Powered by this motor, the refined two-seater sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 10.9 seconds. The car has a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). The dynamic agility of the “pocket rocket” from BRABUS (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777-0, fax + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777 111, internet www.brabus.com) is accompanied by a strikingly styled widebody version with 18-inch forged wheels and a luxurious BRABUS fine leather interior. The design of the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 special model drew on the expertise of BRABUS ZERO EMISSION. This business unit of BRABUS Group has been working on alternative powertrains since 2008. BRABUS has been one of the top addresses worldwide for exclusive high-performance automobiles for more than four decades. The BRABUS ZERO EMISSION business unit of the automotive manufacturer recognized by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority is dedicated to the development of cars with alternative powertrains. BRABUS Marine is another division of the Bottrop-based company, which deals with building and refining boats and yachts. In the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 city sports car, the two teams pooled their expertise to build a “tender” for the new recreational craft presented by BRABUS Marine early this year ñ the BRABUS 500 “Shadow OPSì Limited Edition “1 of 28”, whose two outboard motors with a combined output of 368 kW / 500 hp (493 bhp) give it a top speed of more than 50 knots (92.6 km/h/57.5 mph). The compact 28-foot boat is one of the most dynamic of its kind and comes from BRABUS Marine refined with exclusive appointments. To be just as agile on land, BRABUS developed a “tender” for the city, which is not only equally nimble, but also boasts many parallels to its seagoing counterpart with regard to the design. The two-seater, which celebrates its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show 2019, is painted the same gunmetal gray and in the cockpit features the identical combination of red leather and Silvertex fabric as the BRABUS 500 “Shadow OPS” Limited Edition “1 of 28”. However, instead of two eight-cylinder gasoline engines like the boat, the city speedster relies on an electric powertrain: The basis is provided by the smart fortwo EQ cabrio of the current generation, which is powered by a three-phase synchronous motor in the stern. The power is sent to the rear wheels by a single-speed transmission. BRABUS stands for high performance and consequently the development engineers did of course not settle for the stock output of 60 kW / 82 hp (80 bhp). Thus, they developed a performance upgrade for an electric car, making BRABUS the first company in the world to do so. The BRABUS PowerXtra performance upgrade includes a reprogrammed torque control system, special modules for the driving dynamics switch and the accelerator pedal as well as a special gateway. These measures allowed unleashing and using the inherent reserves in this electric powertrain. The “driving fun switch” in the cockpit enables the driver to choose between four different drive modes. In Level 1, the electric motor responds as in any stock smart EQ fortwo. In the “Eco” position, the energy recovery rate is increased and the two-seater brakes much more strongly than the production model when lifting off the accelerator. Level 3 stands for “Sport.î The accelerator pedal delivers quicker response and the energy recovery rate is dialed down to the production level.

22

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

When the driver selects the “Sport +” mode, the motor produces an increased peak output of 68 kW / 92 hp (91 bhp) and peak torque climbs to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft), a proud 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) more than the production vehicle. This mode also offers more direct accelerator pedal response while the energy recovery rate remains at the production level. In “Sport +” mode, the BRABUS two-seater sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 10.9 seconds. The top speed remains limited to 130 km/h (81 mph). It goes without saying that the exclusive city sports car remains completely carbon-neutral despite its increased performance. Depending on the driving style, the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition ì1 of 28î has a range of up to 125 kilometers (78 miles) on one battery charge. However, the “tender” city sports car captivates not only with its eco-friendly and at the same time fascinatingly dynamic powertrain: The design of the city sports car also sets itself apart from the crowd! The two-seater is a preeminent eye-catcher not only thanks to its gunmetal gray special paintwork, but also thanks to its thrilling WIDESTAR body, which is exclusively reserved for the vehicles of the limited BRABUS Ultimate special editions. The widebody version has a sporty and dynamic design with fender flares at the front and rear axle. They create space for 18-inch wheels with low-profile tires, which are highly unusual for an electric car of this size. Hi-tech forging technology is used to produce especially lightweight BRABUS Monoblock Y forged wheels for the current BRABUS Ultimate supercars based on the latest smart generation. With the front wheel weighing just 6.7 kilograms (14.7 pounds) and the rear wheel just 7.1 kilograms (15.6 pounds), the BRABUS Monoblock Y wheels for the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition ì1 of 28î are among the lightest 18-inch wheels on the market worldwide. A crucial factor in the lightweight construction is the delicate design featuring nine spokes with polished surfaces, which taper off into the outer rim of the wheel in the shape of a “Y.” Thanks to the widebody version, the front axle can be fitted with size 7Jx18 wheels and size 205/35 R 18 high-performance tires. On the rear axle, size 235/30 R 18 tires on eight-inch rims provide optimal traction and agile handling. The BRABUS suspension was specifically calibrated to the weight of the electric car, the ultra-low-profile tires and the wider track. It combines sporty and safe handling with the desired ride quality.

Of course, the widebody comprises not only wider fenders, but also aerodynamic-enhancement components such as front spoiler, rocker panels and rear diffuser, all developed in the wind tunnel. The cockpit of the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 is a prime example of an outstanding combination of fascinating design, masterful workmanship and meticulous material selection as well. The company upholstery shop created a BRABUS fine leather interior in a combination of especially soft and breathable BRABUS Mastik leather and Silvertex fabric for the seat surfaces. The red is exactly the same that also adorns the seats and lounger area of the boat. This color is found not only on the seats, the inner sections of the door panels and the steering wheel rim, but also on the dashboard. The lovingly finished details of this exclusive all-leather interior also include square quilting of the seat surfaces applied with pinpoint precision. For a markedly sporty contrast, the BRABUS interior designers created naked-carbon components for the instrument cluster bezel, the air vent rings and the gage holding a charging indicator and clock mounted on top of the left side of the dashboard. The BRABUS aluminum pedals, shift knob and parking brake lever add another touch of racing looks to the interior. In addition, this electric supercar is equipped with tailor-made scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo, which like the emblem on the stainless-steel footrest in the driver’s footwell changes color from white to red. High-quality black floor mats with square quilting and red BRABUS logo complete the classy ambiance. Of course, the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 also comes with such elementary comfort features as climate control, sound and navigation system. The “1 of 28” badge on the dashboard documents the affiliation with this exclusive limited edition. Prices for the BRABUS Ultimate E Shadow Edition 1 of 28 start at 64,900 euros MSRP (price includes 19 percent VAT in Germany). smart EQ fortwo e-cup rallycross testing

The racecars involved in the fortwo e-cup EQ smart trophy get ready for a new, exciting season and put themselves to the test in a series of snow and ice tests. A new opportunity to bring the sportiness of the 100% electric smart out of the usual contexts, enhancing the versatility of the cars in the race version. The first shake down, on the snowy roads of Livigno, focused the drivers’ commitment on the reactions of the car after the installation of the self-locking differential and on Pirelli’s studded tire tests. The second round saw the smart EQ fortwo protagonists on the frozen tracks of Isola 2000, in France, during the third stage of the Andros Trophy. Champions were participating including Nicolas and Sacha Prost, Frank Lagorce, Christophe Ferrier and Luois Gervoson, who have promoted the innovative formula of the trophy and the sporty character of the electric smart. “The smart trophy is a great project,” said Nicolas Prost at the end of the test. “I am convinced that with small tricks it can become a very fun car to drive even on snow and ice.” “My first impression is really positive, I like it!”, Added Sacha Prost. “Small and reactive, it is already in a condition to get on track and give emotions to drivers and fans.””It’s a lot of fun to drive, it’s a bit different from our cars,” said Franck Lagorce. “We need to take our time to understand it and adapt it to their driving style. Driving it in the race could be a lot of fun. “The same impression was also had by Christophe Ferrier and Louis Gervoson who appreciated the marked agility, the immediate driver feedback and the natural inclination to overtake. The new smart fortwo coupÈ and cabrio EQs, together with the four-seater forfour version, are the ideal choice for city mobility, thanks to the 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery engine, guaranteed for 8 years / 100,000 km, and a 160 km range with zero emissions.

To make it even more sporty and compliant with the safety requirements for motoring competitions, the LPD Italia team has subjected the smart EQ fortwo to various modifications, immediately visible by the new aerodynamic kit. The overall weight of the car drops significantly from 1,000 kg to 900, thanks to numerous racing elements in carbon. The introduction of the roll-cage in combination with the tridion cell, represents a further element for the safety of the pilots. The two seats give way to a single racing seat made entirely of fiberglass and the set-up has been adapted to the needs of the race with the adoption of new springs and new shock absorbers. The new mechanical self-locking differential installed on the smart EQ fortwo e-cup gives the citycar an even more racing and fun feeling on gravel and ice surfaces. This important technical upgrade allows better distribution of the 160 nm of torque thanks to a pack of slats that, acting on the rotation speed of the driving wheels and able to reach up to 100% locking the rear axle, improves traction and acceleration in the corners. The self-locking differential used in tests on snow and ice is designed to be modulated and calibrated differently depending on the type of surface, a feature that will allow it to be present on all the smart of the Italian Rallycross Championship.

smart EQ fortwo e-cup rallycross Our thanks to the smart rallycross teams and LPD Italia. Muc of the following is translated from Italian the Italian teams, drivers and organisers. It was a great success for the first of the smart e-cup rallycross events. Many drivers took turns at the wheel of the 100% electric smart discovering ... “Zero Emissions, Only Emotions!”

Milan, Italy - the Maggiora track was the setting for the debut of the smart EW fortwo e-cup in rallycross version. Many drivers came to test the potential of the 100% electric city car that the team of LPD Italia has been able to transform into a fun racing car. Equipped with an unprecedented self-locking differential, the smart that this year will bring to life both the Italian Rallycross Alternative Energy Championship and the respective Italian Track Speed Championship. A wide range of drivers tested the potential of the 160 Nm of the electric engine. Drivers ranged from future rallycross stars like Filippo Bossetti to experienced drivers like Giovanni Savoini, Marco Frezza, Lino Curti and Alessandro Cutrera coming from the GT world to Emanuele Liboni, protagonist of the first edition of the smart EQ fortwo e-cup, up to the eclectic Andrea Buscaglia, with a past in motocross, including Andrea Astuto and Riccardo Longo. The common theme of all the drivers was the pleasant surprise to discover a fun car to drive, sincere in the reactions and with a considerable boost generated by the intrinsic characteristics of the electric propulsion of the smart EQ fortwo e-cup. For many it was also the first contact with the world of e-mobility, where the absence of gear change and noise have not affected the performance and driving pleasure.

Great maneuverability, lots of torque for a great driving pleasure and, once you’ve got the right mood, you really enjoy it! All doubts about the electric aspect disappear before the end of the first lap. It’s been a good experience that I would like to repeat! “Says Filippo Bossetti, 16 years and already two seasons protagonist in kartcross

The Italian Rallycross Smart EQ fortwo e-cup Alternative Energy 2019 starts on April 21st and 22nd on the Maggiora track, the first of the six events that make up the season with the media day scheduled for April 7th on the Novara track. WHAT THE drivers HAVE SAID >>

4site - the columns that support thesmartclub’s website

I was amazed at how this smart e-cup turned out to be agile and snappy, definitely fun to drive, “commented Lino Curti, expected this year at the International GT Open.” It seemed very manageable and sincere in behavior . I am convinced that the series will have a radiant future ahead of them. I will do the GT Open, but I would like to introduce myself at the start of some races this year

On the track, the smart EQ proved to be up to expectations. In the rallycross, with the continuous changes of grip and the use of the self-locking differential, the driving becomes more demanding, the engine pushes vigorously and we need to pay a little attention to the delivery of power, “commented Emanuele Liboni. His EvClick debuted in the smart EQ fortwo e-cup in the last season and is ready to do an encore this year. “The most surprising thing is that these smart e-cup adapt easily to any type of background, always keeping a high level of driving fun. I am convinced that the smart EQ fortwo e-cup can be both a training school for young drivers and an excellent championship for drivers with more experience. It’s the versatility of e-motorsport: Zero Emissions, Only Emotions!

On earth it’s impressive: it’s really strong, it jumps, it explodes. We must understand and manage it. It ‘s really funny, if you exaggerate with the gas you can cross without hesitation. In the race it will be a pure show, I am convinced of it. “Are the words of Giovanni Savoini, protagonist for several seasons in the rallycross world.” I thought it was a style exercise, but it’s a real rallycross car!

Issue 39 - 2018 - www.thesmartclub.co.uk

The car is so strong, pushes hard at the beginning, what is needed in the rallycross. The power is right for the type of car, reactive like a kart, manageable even if not so simple. “Said Marco Frezza, in 2018 at the start of the 24h Series with a Porsche 991.” I am convinced that the heat with 4 \ 6 cars will definitely be spectacular. I’d like to do some races, maybe ...

Until you drive it you do not understand what you feel inside! It’s incredible! I come from motocross, a similar but different world. Running in the car has always been one of my goals, this smart e-cup could be the ideal connection that I missed. “Andrea Buscaglia, a versatile and very eclectic athlete, let himself go.” It’s something new, particular, different and for this I like it, it intrigues me and stimulates me. I have done many sports with a high level of adrenaline, never as a professional but always for fun and passion. I am a lover of emotions and this car has all the characteristics to make me have fun again. I would like to be able to participate in the whole championship. The smart Racing Club will be covering every round of the rallycross championship throughout 2019. [Credits: PhotoRigato]

Simply Smart 2018

Beaulieu’s Simply Smart rounds off successful rally season As many as 132 cheeky Smart cars motored into Beaulieu for Simply Smart with a colourful line-up as a fitting finale to a successful year of Simply rallies. The popular gathering of much-loved city cars saw examples of the soughtafter Smart Roadster park-up alongside the iconic For Two and familyfriendly For Four, in the grounds of the National Motor Museum. With many of the cars on show resplendent with wild graphics, zany colour schemes and fun accessories, the autumn sun shone as enthusiastic owners met to compare their highly individual motors and talk about all things Smart. The last of nine Simply rallies for 2018, Simply Smart rounded off Beaulieu’s event calendar in style, following the super-sized Simply Ford and Simply Porsche, glamorous Simply Aston Martin and Simply Jaguar, and Simply Land Rover with its Rummage autojumble. Next year, Simply Smart will return on November 10th as part of a line-up which includes brand new Simply Mercedes on August 18th. For the full calendar see www.beaulieu.co.uk/events. Simply Smart traditionally takes place on Remembrance Sunday and a two-minute silence was observed at 11am on November 11th to mark the Armistice Centenary. A reading was given by retired Royal Navy CPO and Smart owner Mr Tod Sloan. Throughout the day, show-goers cast their votes for their favourite Smart car of the show in the People’s Choice Award. The biggest hit with voters was winner Richard LeMarquand, who had travelled from Northamptonshire to display his 2005 Smart Roadster. The immaculate Roadster in deep red paintwork had been in Richard’s possession for just nine months. He was presented with a Beaulieu trophy and an Autoglym car care pack by Beaulieu’s Deputy Visitor Services Manager Richard Simmonds. Runners-up were David Yakes and Fran Terry. David, from Andover, had also only recently bought his 2004 Roadster in a unique satin green paint finish. Fran had affectionately nicknamed his 2004 For Two ‘For Fluff’, owing to the blue and purple spotted fur on its panels, reminiscent of one of the characters from the family film Monsters Inc. Travelling from Cornwall for the show, Fran is no stranger to long-distance drives in his Smart, having already participated in a charity rally to Gibraltar earlier in the year. Both David and Fran were presented with special Autoglym prizes.

Earlier this year, a new service for UK based smart car owners launched helping such owners to find a smart service or repair centre in a location to suit them. The ‘Help my smart’ online service allows users to select a geographic location, address, town, postcode of even part of a desired Retailer or Independent 3rd party company name. With full Google map functionality, once the desired area has been selected, markers identify smart Retailers and/or 3rd party companies who may be able to assist. A ‘pin’ on the map identifies the specific location of each such company and, when clicked, will offer full contact details and a direct link to that Retailer or 3rd party web site. As the service uses Google Maps, one can zoom to street level and use Google Street View to locate the premises. Retailers and 3rd Party companies (Independents) are further categorised indicating whether a company is a ‘Featured Retailer’ or ‘Featured Independent’. Such ‘Featured’ companies have further details, offers and promotions available via thesmartclub’s web site and/or ‘4site’ smart Magazine.
