Sibella Court is a creative director, interior & product designer, television presenter, author & founder of the The Society inc, a design company, online hardware emporium and purveyor of homegoods.
The Society inc was founded in 2008 with curiosity embedded into the DNA. It’s an imaginarium with a product offering that celebrates the romance & nostalgia of history, hand crafted objects & heritage trades. The hardware and homegoods collections are inspired by time worn curiosities from around the globe and are made from materials that patina with age, grace with use & embed people’s stories.
As Sibella’s empire expands, she has added to her offering and partnered with leading manufacturers to design & produce ranges of paint, wallpaper & textiles, tiles, outdoor furniture and upholstered furniture. This all encompassing curation of interior products seeks to inspire & excite, catering to both the DIY home market and the design trade industry.
Sibella’s love of history, particularly the year 1856, & The Royal Society with its ‘experimental gentlemen’ are key in the concept of The Society inc. The mid-1800s were a-changing with the understanding of curbing scurvy, sophisticated new navigation tools & the charting of the tradewinds, leading to a flurry of seafaring exploration from the mid 18th century onwards. The oddities & curiosities, botanicals, animals & bird specimens & other treasures that were carefully transported back began to spark the imaginations of the general public as well as the exciting travel journals of seafaring adventures & far-flung exotic places being published. This was a great time of change, excitement, experiment, discovery and imagination; the world & how it was viewed was in the process of changing forever!
From this time in history also came trades who crafted with resources like metal, timber and canvas. Their age-old approaches of material recovery and resourcefulness have been a guiding light for our sustainability ethos. The farriers, forgers, coppers & shipwrights who relied on steel, brass, durable canvas & bronze for making sails and horseshoes; ship hulls and copper nails inspire our products and have been our best teachers of construction knowledge. They have gifted us with a roadmap in the objects they left behind. No parts wasted, metals were valued, recovered, reheated, reused and reworked. Old objects would be disassembled to be made into something new.
At The Society inc HQ everyone is invited to join, membership is free and you don’t have to be independent wealthy gentlemen. We encourage you to BYO ideas, outlandish as possible please! When developing a product, an idea begins with a story, a particular sensibility, process or material that I am inspired by. I like to give leave to the story and histories, both real and imagined, to take flight and shape the form. I keep this philosophy at the heart of all that we do at The Society inc, drawing on a knowledge of & curiosity for materials & craftsmanship and weaving them together with storytelling & experiences until they emerge in a physical form. It could be a scientific vessel discovered at a flea market that sparks the inspiration for a ceramic product or a texture pulled from my collection of artists’ linens that then becomes a key component of my next mirror design.
When it comes to The Society inc hardware, much of my inspiration dates back to the 1800’s. One of my favourite things would have to be poking about in an old blacksmith’s workshop and I am lucky to have a modern-day blacksmith who feels the same passion & is on standby to sample all our beautiful designs (& his own) to be perfected in all the nuances that come with smithing, tinkering & hand crafting iron, copper, brass and zinc.
At the end of the day, it’s all in the attention to detail and the value of making sure that every small element is aligned with my design process. The smallest of elements have a profound effect on how someone interacts with a space or connects with an object, right down to the packaging it is housed in. It is often thought that we engage with design using our sight first, but I think it takes all the smaller layers, senses & considerations for nostalgia, storytelling & materials to really dictate how a space or object makes us feel. And a pinch of magic and make-believe for good measure!

Many arcane trades like blacksmithing are alive & well in India and this is one of the reasons we manufacture most of our goods & wares there. By using these old trades, I believe the objects that are created by them have weight, texture & a strong connection to craftsmanship & honouring the raw materials they were made from. So much so that I (and I hope many other people too!) find it difficult to ever discard of them. These are objects that are acquired for a lifetime with their users.

Our mission is to bring back the time when the pieces you bought felt as if someone had whittled them or hammered their form to perfection with their own hands. Hardware and homegoods that should be displayed & loved, not hidden. So much so that our hope is you will never wish to throw them away.

All marks of a maker spark my imagination, the remnants of who tinkered, smithed, turned or sculptured, leaving a hint to explore & delve into history many moons later. I adopted the shield shape as my own makers mark when conjuring up the story behind The Society inc, like an old-fashioned club which have an emblem or symbol recognisable to its members.
The Society inc hardware & selection of homegoods are manufactured in India. A vibrant country of handicraft which still displays ancient values and an approach to resource recovery that is thoughtful & considered, an attitude derived from its uninterrupted craft lineage and from necessity. The principles of reusing a stable material like brass over & over have been practiced for centuries in India, Rome, Turkey & around the globe. Through history these ideals were manifested by heritage trades & during periods of resource scarcity.
Moradabad, The City of Brass, is where many of The Society inc products are cast. Reclaimed brass is poured hot & smelting, into chalked pressed metal tins filled with muddied sand for casting. Within minutes a glistening prize is revealed, and with it the accumulation of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. It’s a reminder of the strong foundations built on craft. Technical nutrients like metals and alloys don’t break down like their modern eco-consumer compostable counterparts. But they are strong, malleable & adaptable. With the right consideration, we hope to explore how they could become infinitely recyclable.

There is a rich history of trades that craft with resources like metal and age-old approaches of material recovery and resourcefulness. We value these histories and recognise metals as technical nutrients, and it is our goal to better understand how we can responsibly participate in a closed loop cycle - be it from the initial production of using recycled metals right down to how the end user can dispose of the product so they are not sent to landfill but can be recovered & reused. It is a journey we are still on, but we are committed to identifying the steps both we and our customers can take towards responsible manufacturing and consumption.

Our hardware has been designed with a consideration for honest & humble materials & their properties.
We embrace the imperfections, patinas and variations that are intrinsic to the underlying importance of craftsmanship within India. If cared for correctly they will only get better with age!
Blackened Iron
Prolong the life of blackened iron with Penetrol which helps prevent & remove rust which may build up over time particularly in coastal or wet environments. We suggest applying a few coats over the life of the product.
Brass & Zinc
Both these metals will patina & age over time. This ever-changing characteristic makes the object even more beautiful!
Ceramic & Powder Coated
White Iron
Handle with care to prevent chips & cracks. Best cleaned with a nonabrasive brush or cloth.

Leather
We love how leather patinas & darkens over time, the oils of your skin will age it in the loveliest way. A little Oxalic acid can be used on leather to lessen stains (please follow directions of use carefully)
installation tips
Screws provided
When needed, we provide screws that complement the hardware to truly make it sing! Screws aren’t self-tappers so we recommend pre-drilling a pilot hole when installing.
Measure twice, drill once
Cane will patina with use. It’s ok for your hands to be a little damp when touching cane wrapped hardware, but don’t leave wet textiles sitting on cane for long periods of time
Variations will occur in screw width for some styles due to their handmade nature. It’s recommended to measure each fitting individually before fixing.
Trim where needed
For knobs and pulls that are fitted with a thread, trim to length required before installing.
Styles in a powder-coated finish should only be installed by hand, and NOT with an electric drill. Hand install helps prevent the powder-coat finish from chipping or getting marked.
