SA ‘KARATE’ POET BEATS MUGGER Move over Chuck Norris – 60-year-old South African hero roundhouse kicks thief

D

by NICOLE HOLGATE urban-born Neil Gevisser, 60, became a London hero just 24 hours after becoming a British citizen. A woman in Brook Green was subjected to a ‘smash and grab’ attack in which her hangbag was snatched, but Gevisser, who works as a poet and massage therapist, used years of karate training to halt the attacker. The woman had been sitting in her parked car near Brook Green Tennis Courts, when the robber smashed open the window and snatched her bag. Gevisser was leaving the nearby Tube station when he heard a smash and the woman’s scream. The robber, dressed in full cycle gear, attempted to escape on a motorcyle with the stolen handbag, when Gevisser karatekicked the scooter over and then delivered a roundhouse kick to the man’s stomach. He then kicked him in the shins, at which point the attacker left the hangbag and hobbled away. Police arrived swiftly but the thief had already escaped. The woman retrieved her handbag from the scooter, which was also discovered to be stolen. Bystanders applauded, and Gewisser’s friend Emma Elliot commented that he was brave in an age when ‘good samaritans are a dying breed’. Gevisser was modest about

his actions. “It was completely spontaneous and I don’t feel heroic. I know he could have been armed but I’m glad I stepped in.” This was not Gevisser’s first act of heroism, either. On the same date in 1997, he saved a woman who was being strangled by her husband in the hallway of an apartment block in Manhattan. Over the eerie conincidence of the date, he added “It is really spooky and every time 9 February comes around I’m going to be wondering what the day has in store.” Gevisser is no stranger to taking action against any form of wrongdoing. As a poet at the height of the apartheid era, his verse spoke directly against racism with poems such as ‘Once Proud’, ‘Inferiority’ and ‘Bar-Bar, Black-Man’.

Stern, Pierneef on auction in London

Artworks by Irma Stern and JH Pierneef could fetch millions at auction

by DAN SWINHOE SOUTH African artists are expected to fetch a pretty penny at a London auction on 21 March. The South Africa sale at Bonhams on New Street will feature works by Irma Stern and JH Pierneef, some of SA’s most prestigious painters and could make almost £3 million. Stern’s ‘Zulu Woman’ and ‘The Pink Sari’ are expected to fetch a combined total of £1 million to £2.5 million between them. Giles Peppiatt, director for South African art at Bonhams, said Stern’s work continued to remain in high demand on the international art scene. “Stern didn’t paint Zulus often. It’s current because Jacob Zuma is president and he is a Zulu,” he said. “Her most valuable works were painted when she went to Zanzibar in 1945. This work is the most valuable works sold by a South African artist.” Zanzibar frames were reserved for her most treasured works and the ones she considered her very best examples. The works are worth more if they they are still in their original frames, like the Zulu painting, which was painted in 1925 during Stern’s time in Zanzibar. “She was a terrible vandal. She got these Zanzibar doors and sliced them up to make wooden frames. You can’t export these doors from Zanzibar now. They did provide the most exquisite frames. That adds enormous value,” Peppiatt said. ‘The Pink Sari’ was painted in 1947 and this is the first time it has been put on the open market, as it was bought directly from Stern in the early 1960s and is expected to fetch more than £1 million. Last March, her painting ‘Arab Priest’ fetched around £2.8 million, and previously her ‘Bahora Girl’ sold for more than £2 million. Also on sale will be a series of landscapes by J.H. Pierneef, renowned as one of SA’s greatest painters, and often inspired by the beauty of the African landscape. Born in Pretoria in 1886, many of his paintings were of the highveld. ‘South West African Mountains’ was painted in 1944 and estimated to sell for £100,000 to £150,000, while ‘Bosveld’ is estimated to fetch in the region of £120,000 to £180,000. Peppiatt said his search for SA art took him to Australia, Canada, Israel, South Africa and the US. www.thesouthafrican.com/news

Pearblossom Highway, photographic collage by David Hockney, currently on show at the Royal Academy in London.

How would Hockney have painted South Africa?

Without having ever been to South Africa, David Hockney sums up the colours and spaces of home with his new landscape exhibition by MARIANNE GRAY ON a very grey London day I went to see the David Hockney exhibition, A Bigger Picture, at the Royal Academy. Despondent about the weather, and the heaving and slightly dazed crowds at the exhibition, I strode into the gallery of paintings quite angrily. And then I saw his massive, vivid picture of the Grand Canyon, which looks just like the Augrabies Falls at sunset; his oil on six canvasses of a tunnel of trees in Yorkshire which could have been the bit of road from Cape Town to Darling, lined with tall eucalyptus trees; his picture of Pearblossom Highway with its big blue sky and rush of road signs which could have been anywhere along the road

around Mokopane in Limpopo. What a relief to see space and light and a strong sense of place leaping from the walls so far from South Africa. It was almost as though I had been transported back to a big, open country, passing through a landscape using my eyes, my mind and my emotions. And what, I thought, would Hockney have done in South Africa? Seven years have passed since Hockney left the swimming pools, lawn sprinklers and cloudless blue skies of California. He has returned home to live in Yorkshire, where he has hurled himself with a headlong passion into recording the seasons which, living for so long in California, he had missed.

It is very unlikely now that Hockney, 74, is ever going to paint in South Africa, but for the homesick South African his view of the world is so often of big skies and hot landscapes that he takes you on a journey to warm the heart, open the eyes and feel the space of distance. It’s obviously not quite the same as an actual trip South but for the price of a ticket (from £3 to £14), it’s a cheap way to step out of the clutter, cram and crowds of London for a few minutes and walk through nature’s unfolding spectacle. Book tickets at www. royalacademy.org.uk or telephone 0844 209 051. The exhibition runs until 9 April.

SA opera stars captivate Londoners The concert’s title, From the Townships to the World Stage, aptly summed by the career paths of these two rising stars

by HEATHER WALKER ON Thursday 1 March two awardwinning South African opera singers, Njabulo Madlala and Pumeza Matshikiza, performed at St James’s Piccadilly in London to raise awareness and funds for Foodbank South Africa. The church was packed with music lovers who were held spellbound right from the start by the pair’s dramatic, expressive duet “Cinque, dieci, trenta”, the opening number from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Accompanied by pianist Will Vann, they went on to perform well-known arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Puccini’s La Boheme and compositions by Debussy, Strauss and Schumann. Njabulo’s renditions of traditional South African songs such as “Ntyilo Ntyilo”, “Thula Thula Mama” and “Malaika” were enchanting. The singers reunited to bring the evening to a humorous conclusion with South African favourite “The Click Song”. Their immense talent, passion for music and obvious joy in performing rubbed off on the appreciative audience, reflected by

their hearty applause. The concert’s title, From the Townships to the World Stage, aptly summed by the career paths of these two rising stars. Njabulo, who is based in London, comes from the Inanda township outside Durban and was awarded a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Pumeza grew up in several Cape Town townships and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. The soprano performed at the wedding of Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock and is currently on a three year contract with Stuttgart Opera. Janet Broadhurst of the Foodbank Foundation said the concert raised almost £8,000 for Foodbank South Africa, which currently feeds 35,000 disadvantaged people a day at an average cost of 12p per meal. “We also have donations and membership for Fill the Gap Club streaming in. For as little as two cappuccinos or glasses of wine per month you can feed a person for a month ie £6.25 per month (£75 a year),” she added. Details: www.foodbank.org.za

Anglo-Zulu War Celebrity Speakers Day London’s National Army Museum presented a day of talks on the war

by ANTON VAN ZYL A Celebrity Speakers Day on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was held at the National Army Museum in Chelsea on 25 February. Five speakers were invited to present lectures highlighting different aspects of the Anglo Zulu war, including personalities, Welsh involvement, equipment used by the British colonial forces, and the ambivalent use of firearms by the Zulus. The lectures were presented to an audience of at least 200 people. The day started with well-known author Ian Knight’s presentation on the one person the Colonial Office at the time tried to pin the blame for the disaster of Isandlwana on – Colonel Durnford. The lecture discussed whether Colonel Durnford should be classified as a hero or a villain, and looked at his career from when he entered Woolwich Military Academy till he died at the battle of Isandlwana. The next two speakers were Bill Cainan and Dr Paul Bryant-Quinn, doing an exposition on Welsh involvement in the war. The view at the time of the war was that the 24th of Foot was a British Regiment based in Wales, and although the British army did not discriminate in its recruiting policies, recruiting was done mainly in the counties surrounding the regimental base.

Welsh was not recognised as a separate language at the time, and all official reporting was done in English only. Despite this state of affairs a number of Welsh newspapers published stories on the war in Gaelic in Wales. Welsh newspapers also heavily criticised British Colonial meddling in Zululand. Craig Appleton’s lecture was on the Martini Henry Rifle of the time, as well as the equipment available to the colonial soldier in the 19th Century, as demonstrated by Corporal Church of the 24th of Foot. This demonstration included a live firing as well as a bayonet drill exercise. Katie Stossel presented a lecture about Nurse Janet, a heroine of the Anglo-Zulu war for the Stafford House Team, carrying a red cross on their arms. This lecture went into Nurse Janet’s seeming unpopularity with the Colonial Office for treating British as well as Zulu soldiers during the war, and her scandalous treatment after the war. The last speaker on the day was John Laband, who lectured on the ambivalent use of firearms by the Zulu nation during the war. John highlighted the practice of labourers working on the diamond mines at Kimberly in exchange for firearms, but noted that these were either cheap trade guns or cast-offs from

the European nations who were modernising to breach loading rifles. John also touched on a very contentious issue: the refusal of Cetswayo to allow Zulu men to work on the mines as labourers. Firearms were not properly understood by most of the Zulus, and simply seen as an extension of an existing practice of throwing a spear and attacking by hand. The result was that the Zulus used all the rifles they possessed ineffectively, and it played no major part in the war on their side. This was a war that Cetswayo never wanted nor understood.

Afrifabulous

THE winds of change ruffle my hair. Africa muddles my brain; brings to the fore my worst prejudices and in truth, I end up with a mixture of excitement and doubt. So what’s new, say us South Africans? The latest cause of my endless dilemma is an article by John Arlidge. ‘The Lion Kings’ is a piece about the new ‘young lions’ of Africa; entrepreneurs who are taking chances and creating successful businesses in their respective countries. Africa is known as the cradle of humanity, yet in development terms is still way, way behind the other continents. Globalisation and new technology however, is providing the impetus for these high achievers to tap into the fields of communication, economic growth and vast underground mineral wealth. In finer print, Arlidge also states that ‘Africa is still the poorest place on the planet.’ It’s also a place where tourists and locals are kidnapped, civil wars are ceaseless and massacres commonplace.

Where dictators have no end or conscience; where crime is something children think ordinary. The breadbasket of Africa is barren and torn. People die too soon. Dark Africa. Enough to make one Afriphobic. How to take these pieces of an incongruent puzzle and make them fit? The first trick is to ignore the diehards. Those doomsday prophets that are still fighting the war – the Boer War, the African wars – any war. They will never bend like the young willows of today. Recognise the potential and that it must be firstly for Africans, because the rest of the world is waiting to pounce. Learn why they want in on the cake. Ex Mr Easyjet is opening nearly 50 hotels in Africa, it is claimed, and he’s a smart money-maker. China is there in a big way. More importantly, it’s time everyone born in Africa accepts that all people born in Africa are African. To quote Manz Denga from the same article: ‘ We Africans only have ourselves to blame for the mess we got ourselves into. We screwed it all up... Lousy, collectivist postcolonial policies. Bad governance. Corruption. Kleptocracy. Genocide.Wars that killed more through famine than actual conflict… But everything’s different now. We’re fed up with being the victims of the world. We have the chance to put it right. This is our moment. The African century.’ Get over the Afriphobia. Get into the Afrifabulous.

Budget 2012 and the property market by DENISE MHLANGA In his budget speech, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says South Africa’s new story is about building a vibrant economy. The macro economic climate presented in the 2012 National Budget suggests that the South African property market will in the next year, continue to trade in an environment characterised by uncertain and subdued economic growth. This is the view of property economist Professor Francois Viruly from the Department of Construction Economics and Management at the University of Cape Town. Viruly explains that the possibility of a rising inflation rate, escalation of electricity and municipal related costs continue to impact negatively on operating costs and has become the central concern for households and the South African property sector. He points out that the focus of the 2012 budget on infrastructural expenditure offers opportunities for the property sector. “Infrastructural expenditure not only underpins the performance of the built environment, but also plays a critical role in creating development and investment opportunities in cities and rural areas,” he says. The residential property sector continues to show considerable weakness and the budget does little to promote household investment in the sector. It is critical that government should deliver a housing policy

2

that not only delivers to the lowest tier of the housing market, but which also starts to address the financing and development bottlenecks that exist in the middle tiers of the residential property sector, he says. Viruly believes the housing sector should be seen as a means for households to save and create a strong asset base. Meanwhile, the commercial property sector continues to suffer from high vacancy rates and rapidly rising operating costs. Apart from government’s commitment to focus on the creation of Special Economic Zones, there is very little in the 2012 budget to promote the sector. “If anything, the vigorous focus on infrastructural expenditure could result in escalation of building related costs and possibly crowd out development activity in the private sector.” Lew Geffen, chairman of Sotheby’s International Realty in South Africa, says the budget holds excellent prospects for the speedy improvement of the real estate market and the sustainability of that recovery. Geffen notes that the most important macro aspects include Gordhan’s strong stance against corruption and financial mismanagement, which will undoubtedly boost investor confidence and the property sector. He says the new housing subsidy scheme (subsidies of up to R85 000) aimed at individuals earning between

R3 500 and R15 000 a month will give the lower end of the market much needed impetus. Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive officer of the Pam Golding Property Group has welcomed the new Cities Support Programme focused on improved spatial planning, public transport systems and management of infrastructure in eight metropolitans. “Home buyers increasingly seek to live in areas within easy reach of transport to places of employment to avoid the increasing effects of rising fuel costs, toll roads, traffic congestion and time wastage.” Golding says they had hoped for further reduction in transfer duty payable by home buyers to help encourage home ownership, which in itself helps provide future financial security for home owners. “The housing market remains under pressure, and while interest rates remain historically low, a recovery in the market is expected to remain relatively muted for the remainder of this year.” Craig Hutchison, chief executive officer of Engel & Volkers Southern Africa, says the budget’s focus on job creation, education and infrastructure improvement bodes well for the property market. Bond originator Betterbond says the positive sentiment expressed in the Budget will further stimulate housing demand and increase the ability of home seekers to qualify for housing finance. Transfer duty and the property market by DENISE MHLANGA On 23 February 2011, South African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan raised the transfer duty threshold by R100 000 to R600 000. According to Lightstone, the 2011 adjustment also changed the ruling to allow juristic entities, i.e. trusts, CCs and Pty Ltds to also benefit from the R600 000 transfer duty allowance. Lightstone conducted a study of the impact of amendments to transfer duty in respect of property sales. Hayley Ivins says in order to understand whether these adjustments had any impact on sales in the property market, they examined the frequency of property sales in the R500 000 to R600 000 price bracket in the six month period pre and post the date of implementation i.e. 23 February 2011. She says they excluded those transactions that were directly from property developers as they do not carry transfer duty costs and portions of title shares. The study also looked at sales to natural persons and juristic entities independently.

Results from the study revealed that property sales increased by 8% for natural persons. Looking at people buying property in their personal capacity registered against their ID number at the Deeds Office, the number of sales in the R500 000 to R600 000 band in the six-month period prior to the transfer duty amendment was 6 378 and this rose to 6 879 in the six months post the adjustment, she points out. In the case of juristic entities, the study identified a 36% lift in property sales between the R500 000 and R600 000 band in the six month period post the announcement, from 635 to 866 sales. “This indicates that the adjustment served as an impetus for purchases in the names of juristic entities, in the price band exempt of transfer duty.” Ivins adds that the study results indicate that an increase in the minimum value for transfer duty appears to stimulate the appetite of buyers in the value band exempt from transfer costs. SA's hot new property developments by DENISE MHLANGA Whether buying a primary residence or for letting purposes, the new residential property developments in Johannesburg and Cape Town are in demand. In Johannesburg, Melrose Arch’s latest residential development Forty on Oak is set to deliver a super-modern cosmopolitan lifestyle to a privileged few. Forty on Oak has 59 apartments measuring between 95 square metres for one bedroom apartments to 886 square metre penthouses. It has set a new standard for sustainable living and boasts the first ever Four-Star Green Star Rating awarded to a multi-unit residential development in South Africa. Built on an existing ‘green’ infrastructure, further energy reductions are accomplished via the use of revolutionary technology that intelligently reduces and monitors energy consumption. Developers Amdec say those that buy to live at Forty on Oak will enjoy the ultimate in enviable lifestyles, just steps away from the very best in shopping, wining, dining and more. “Forty on Oak seamlessly delivers everything the heart desires in a luxury lifestyle investment that will appreciate over time,” says Amdec. According to Amdec, this development has attracted significant interest from foreign buyers and local corporations. They say the top-end buyto-let investors appreciate the superb returns that Melrose Arch apartments have achieved to-date. Beyond the qualities evident in the apartments themselves, appreciating value may also be attributed to the excellent security and brilliantly managed and maintained environment. Peet Strauss, Melrose Arch development manager for Pam Golding Properties (PGP), says 35 of the 59 units available in the five-storey apartment block situated adjacent to the Protea Fire & Ice Hotel have already been sold.

MARCH 2012

This represents more than 70 percent of the apartments, which were placed on the market by PGP in June 2011. The apartments will be ready for occupation by the end of this year and are valued between R3.7 million and R28 million. The total value of the units in the new apartment block is R400 million. Strauss indicates that two of five luxury penthouse apartments available have also been sold for R25 million and R28 million respectively. Strauss explains that demand is spurred on by the limited accommodation on offer in the highly fashionable mixed-use development, as much of the space in Melrose Arch is devoted to offices and retail. There will only be a total of 172 units available once the third phase is complete, and because Melrose Arch offers secure high street living, these apartments are fast proving to be a sound investment, he says. In Cape Town, Little Moorings, the first new residential development to be built at Century City in the past 18 months is almost complete, with transfers scheduled to take place this month. Comprising 42 one and two bedroom studio units, Little Moorings is the first new development to be linked into Century City Connect, Century City’s revolutionary fibre optic open access network. This provides the country’s fastest last mile open access network over which a select number of Internet Service Providers can offer those living and working in the precinct the fastest voice, broadband and multimedia services. Brian Usher of Property World, the official on-site agency at Century City, says only two of the 44 apartments remain to be sold. Buyers at Little Moorings were investors who bought to let, and tenants were snapping up these apartments, many of which are water facing. “There is no doubt Century City Connect has been an

additional drawcard with tenants prepared to pay a premium to stay there,” says Usher. One bedroom apartments command rentals of between R6 500 and R6 800 per month and two bedroom units from R8 800 to R9 000 per month, he says. Little Moorings is set in a secure, private garden fronting a canal which links into the 8km of waterways at Century City The site is secured by means of perimeter palisade fencing with access control. Priced from R750 000 to R1 750 million, apartments measure between 50 square metres for one bedroom units, to 99 square metres for two bedroom, two bathroom apartments. The Herschel, which was launched in 2011, is an iconic luxury apartment building which continues the transformation of Claremont’s central precinct, which started

with the construction of Cavendish Square 30 years ago. Set within 150 square metres of Cavendish Square, and within easy cycling or commuting distance to the University of Cape Town, The Herschel comprises 66 apartments priced from R1.2 million. Berman Bros and SandakLewin Developments formed a joint venture to develop this R140 million project on a prime site of 2 364 square metres, on the corner of Herschel Road and Herschel Close. Paul Berman says they have sold 30 percent of these top-end apartments to a wide range of buyers. Buyers include local people downscaling from larger, older homes to reduce their overheads, and looking for a lock-up and go lifestyle, and young entrepreneurs, businesspeople, investors and

parents of students at UCT. Buh-Rein Estate, the largest private development currently being undertaken in the Western Cape suburb of Tygerberg will have 3241 apartments, 133 freestanding homes and 137 townhouses once complete. Two-bedroom apartments fetch rentals of R4 000 per month, and Roos attributes the success of the estate to a good balance between lifestyle, security and convenience at a very affordable price. Buh-Rein Estate offers a state-of-the-art five-tier security system, 20 pocket parks, multipurpose sports fields and green zones, more than 2000 indigenous trees, 10km of jogging and cycling tracks, a shopping centre and a petrol station, a fast food drive-through, a sports clubhouse and management centre. I

t is always risky to purchase property you have not seen or inspected. The biggest risk you would face is not knowing about defects at the property, or factors in the neighbourhood which affect the property’s value

– both of these factors could translate into lost income or over payment. If there is no alternative and you are unable to view the property, ensure that you are utilising the services of a reputable agency and an agent who has been in the area for some time and whom you trust. Check that the agent has a current Fidelity Fund certificate and request sight of the defects report the agent should have compiled at the time of taking the mandate. Agents

are required by their code of conduct to disclose any defects to prospective purchasers. It may be worthwhile to instruct a firm of home inspectors to give you a written report on the condition of the property. This is becoming common practise in all sales. Ask the agent to provide you with a recent CMA. A CMA is a comparative market analysis, which shows the values of recently sold homes in the immediate proximity of the property which you are

interested in, as well as their growth rate. Furthermore, ask the agent to give you a written report on the surrounding area, possible developments and building activities, proximity to schools and information regarding new highways or roads in the area. Ask the agent to secure the crime statistics for the area and ask the dominant security service to provide you with incident statistics for the area. Lastly, ask the agent to email photographs of each room, the

Treasures in the scenic Bushveld by STAFF REPORTER Mpumalanga and Limpopo are two provinces synonymous with lush South African bushveld. Limpopo is the land of myths, legends, beautiful scenery and landscape, as well as majestic Baobab trees. Limpopo is typical of Africa, hence has become a favourite destination for leisure and adventure travellers worldwide. Mpumalanga is divided in two by the Drakensberg escarpment, the western side consisting of high-altitude grasslands and the eastern side a low altitude subtropical savannah habitat. This area boasts some of the most breathtaking natural beauty in the world. Dullstroom is a small town situated only two hours away from Pretoria and three hours from Johannesburg. It’s well-known as a safe tourist destination where you can enjoy outdoor activities such as fly-fishing, endless kilometres of mountain biking and horse riding. Property in the area is a mixed bag, from working farms and guest farms to village properties categorised as permanent residences and luxury holiday homes. These properties are also rented out over weekends and generate a good return on investment. “Most of our properties are of a leisure/second home nature. The second home market has taken a definite knock during the recession period and sales in 2011 were

very slow,” says Charmane Horn, team leader of Engel & Völkers Dullstroom. “Average farms in the area start at the R2 million mark for a typical weekend farm, and up to R10 million for a working farm. Village stands are in the region of R350 000 and homes average around R1.5 million. In 2012 the enquiries for the area have increased rapidly,” she concluded. Futher east, about 320km from Pretoria, is Nelspruit ,a city surrounded by majestic mountain ranges and with a subtropical climate. It is the ideal area for citrus fruit farming and forestry, and perfect for either investing in developments, buyers looking for holiday homes or anyone

looking to move away from the metropolis areas to the quiet bushveld suburbs of the Lowveld. “We are currently focused on the Elawini Lifestyle Estate. What makes this estate noteworthy is the fact that it’s the only lifestyle estate in Nelspruit with a complete and fully functional central facility, which includes a gym, 25m swimming pool and squash court. The estate offers stands right next to the beautiful Nelsriver, says Kobus Bosman Licence Partner of Engel & Völkers Nelspruit. “Full title stands with an average size of 800m², are selling from R410 000. off with a brick perimeter wall start at R1,2 million. A three-bedroom, two-bathroom sectional title duplex with two carports goes for R845 000 and single storey 3 bedroom, two-bathroom sectional title units with a double garage, for R1,045 million. Building contracts, depending on structure and finishes, are around R6000 per m² (excl. the stand),” Kobus added. Moving north into Limpopo province, nestled between the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon, you find the small agricultural and tourist town of Hoedspruit. Hoedspruit finds itself in an enviable position because of its access to the private game areas of the Timbavati and

Klasirie. Properties in the area can range anything from R600 000 for a medium-sized house, up to R50 million for a game farm. This area is perfect for investors looking to buy a game farm to use as a holiday destination, or buyers looking for a second home. Mpumalanga and Limpopo are truly provinces with hidden treasures around every corner. They are home to luscious green vegetation, some astonishing mountain ranges, and are an investor’s paradise. Rand firmer after largest debt restructuring in history

THE Rand began trading last week Monday 5 March around the 11.91 mark against its British counterpart and 9.93 to the Euro. The Rand closed significantly stronger on Friday 9 March at 11.77 to the British Pound and 9.97 to the Euro. Once again the European Single Currency is the big market mover on the forex front. The Rand flew to strength in anticipation of positive feedback coming from Greece on Thursday. The GBP/ ZAR cross strengthened some 15 cents in a matter of hours in

preparation for positive feedback from the EU. Greek debt holders seem to be supportive of the proposed bailout plan whereby Greece will restructure its current debt situation to a longer maturity and lower yield debt instrument. This will ease their short term borrowing pressure and make the debt repayments more manageable. We can expect the Rand to continue to track the Euro as investors rekindle their appetite for risk under the new current market

expectations. The short term outlook for the Eurozone looks positive but analysts are still warning about the long term. Current pressure is relieved but if the fundamentals of countries within the Eurozone are not immediately addressed we may find them back in the same situation, if not worse off. THE GRAFT IS GREENER

Paul Cole

Regional manager for Access Self Storage • Born: Sandton, South Africa • How long in UK: Since November 2000 (11 years) • Job: Regional manager for one of the UK’s largest self storage companies, Access Self Storage • Background: I studied Sports Management and Business Management at RAU and qualified at the end of 2000. In 2001 I came to the UK to begin my career and gain experience in business management with a goal of returning to South Africa. In February 2001 I found a job with Access Self Storage and then I found a wife, and have never looked back. • Motto: Always try to achieve your best every day by doing your very best every day.

What do you do in your job? I am responsible for 13 self storage sites throughout the Greater London region. The main purpose of my role is to ensure my stores are staffed with motivated teams with the necessary skills to tackle a difficult and competitive industry and to encourage them to generate new business and exceed their store budgets. Most exciting thing about your job? In such a competitive industry it really excites me when I exceed my monthly sales targets. I am also motivated by team-building and staff development. I get great satisfaction when I see that my teams are energised, motivated, hungry and have a commitment to their jobs. It also excites me to see individuals who have worked hard and made a contribution to the

success of the business go on to make fantastic careers within our organisation. Most challenging thing about your job? Increasing our business during the current economic downturn. The self storage industry thrives when

the housing market is buoyant and since 2008, when the market fell sharply, together with the credit crunch, it has been an extremely challenging period. We are still receiving lots of enquiries but converting them into sales is extremely challenging.

Future plans? I am in a stable place right now. I have worked and lived in the UK for the past 11 years and will most likely stay here for the rest of my life. I am ambitious and would like to continue developing my career with Access Self Storage. Do you think being South African helps you in your job? I think my upbringing in South Africa has really helped me progress in my career at Access Self Storage. South Africans are driven, direct and very motivated. Those from my generation grew up during a lot of political change and lots of uncertainty about employment prospects. Therefore we had to study harder, work harder and play harder than most, in order to have a chance to succeed in later life. Coming to the UK with my South African background also helped me to integrate well. During my time in the UK, I have learnt a lot more about life and about running a business. South Africa back in the 1990s was a very sheltered place whereas the UK is more exposed and has allowed me to learn and develop.

“Pick on someone your own size” AH, bullying! Something we have no doubt all experienced. It can happen at home, school, in the street and yes, unfortunately, it happens in the workplace too. A lot of people have asked me to write on bullying in the workplace, especially by upper management. My thoughts on this basically come down to training. When a human being wants to assert their will on a situation, there are basically two ways of doing it, using the “carrot” (motivation) or the “stick” (demotivation) to get the outcome they are after. Motivation is always a nicer way to go but people by nature will react quicker away from pain than towards pleasure. Humans know this instinctively and if we don’t feel that we can get what we want by being nice, we can revert to being nasty, in this case, bullying. The problem with this kind of approach is that it incurs strong resentment from the person being bullied and someone with a strong self image could react quite strongly after being bullied. If senior management are respected by their employees, they will be well supported. If they are feared or deemed bullies, they may get short term results but should not be surprised if loyalty wanes… If you have any questions or comments, please email me on Paul@mobivation.com

In Dublin’s fair city

It’s St Patrick’s Day this Saturday and in honour of it NINA McGRATH recounts her visit to the Emerald Isle

by NINA MCGRATH MY husband and I spent a long weekend in Dublin last summer. We flew with Aer Lingus and were greeted by the cabin crew in their lilting Irish accents. The pilot’s voice informed us that it was ‘A pleasant tir-teen degrees in Dublin’. That’s summer in Ireland for you. We went straight to O’Connell Street, Dublin’s main thoroughfare. You don’t have to look far to ascertain you're in Ireland – the pillar boxes aren't red but a sedate shade of green and we spotted shamrocks decorating the street lamps. Street signs are in both Gaelic and English, which is handy as you can’t get by just pronouncing the Irish phonetically, for example ‘Dan Laoghaire’ is pronounced ‘Dan Leery’.

toll once charged to cross it) and wandered through the narrow cobbled streets of Temple Bar. We were keen to find a pub and see if there was any truth in the rumour that Guinness tastes different in Ireland. There certainly is. The delicious dark pint I sampled was a world away from the bitter brew I had grabbed at the off-licence last St Patrick’s Day in London. Our newly discovered taste for Guinness inspired us to visit the Guinness Storehouse and ascend seven floors of the pint shaped building. Thankfully we didn’t have to wait until the seventh floor to taste it, instead sampling it in the tasting lab on the first floor. We finally visited the Gravity Bar, where we sipped Guinness while taking in 360 degree views of the Irish capital.

Up the Dubs O’Connell Street is home to The Spire of Dublin, a 398ft stainless steel spike that looks like it's waiting to receive a receipt the size of a city block. The Spire is located on the site of Nelson's Pillar which was bombed by former IRA members in 1966. O’Connell Street is also home to the General Post Office, which served as the headquarters of the uprising's leaders during the Easter Rising of 1916, and was extensively damaged in the assault by British forces. It was repaired years later by the Irish Free State government, but bullet holes remain on some of the original columns.

The ghosts of Irish past Our next stop was Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest university. Its graduates include writers Jonathan Swift, Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde. We took in the art, architecture and tall tales on a walking tour of the campus. At the sculpture of George Salmon, provost of the College from 1888 to 1904, we were told that Salmon fought bitterly to keep women out of the College, threatening to admit them 'over my dead body'. He fulfilled this promise by dying shortly after the College was finally opened to female students. To add insult to injury his statue is dressed in women's clothes one day a year.

of my dad’s records: I was shocked to hear her described as ‘the tart with the cart’ or ‘the trollop with the scallops’ It turns out the song fails to mention that Molly moonlighted as a lady of the night. We caught the bus to Howth, and worked up an appetite walking through the heather and gorse, and avoiding the prickly

blackberry bushes on the climb to Howth Summit. It was among the rhododendrons on Howth Head that Leopold Bloom proposed to Molly Bloom in James Joyce’s book Ulysses (eager Molly said yes seven times). We took in the view while being buffeted about by the wind and then walked back to Howth Harbour for a delicious fresh seafood lunch - accompanied by a pint of Guinness.

TEAM SA @ THE LONDON OLYMPICS Member of the women’s hockey team that Lauren Penny qualified for the Olympics by KWAME WILSON BALANCING her 9-5 sales job during the week and her sporting commitments abroad on the weekends, hockey player Lauren Penny spoke to us about

her excitement ahead of the Olympics, and how she acquired the nickname ‘Spiko’! Where in London do you live? Bow, East London, almost next door to the Olympic Stadium.

What was it like for you growing up in South Africa? Growing up there was about being outside in the sun, playing sport and having a good time with friends. I love the diversity of SA and because I had a few circles of friends from the various teams I played in, I got to understand some of the many cultures. I am still very much a proud South African. How excited are you after defeating India in the final of FIH Road to London, to now be heading to the Olympics? It’s been incredible, I cannot explain the feeling. I’m still on such a high and even after getting back to normal life and my fulltime job I still relive the memory again and again in my head. That was a special moment I will cherish for a long time, and the prospect of potentially being at the Olympics is very exciting. Excelling in tough tournament conditions like you did in India, do you think this bodes well for the team at the Games? Absolutely, it gives us a great foundation to build upon. We’ve worked hard over the last few months and a big focus has been on coping in mentally tough situations. There’s been a change in SA hockey recently, especially with the appointment of a new coach in the last 18 months. He has instilled a lot belief and drive within the players and I genuinely believe this is the start of a great era for SA hockey. Has it been a whirlwind affair for you, making your debut in January and grabbing a World Championship medal just a month later? It’s been like a fairytale. Everything just seemed to fall into place. It might sound a bit clichéd but it feels like this is what I was born to do. Although it’s been tough at times and I suffered a chest infection from travelling to

SA every weekend, it’s all been worth it. Working 9-5 in London and playing home games for the national side on the weekend must be hectic. What is it like balancing two jobs on two different continents? My job is in sales, so there is a lot of pressure. This has probably been my biggest challenge especially as January is the biggest month of the year for us. I would love sport to be my full-time job and think it would make a big difference to my peformance but with the lack of funding this just isn’t possible, so balance is really important. I am now a frequent flyer and regularly have my dinner on a Friday night at the Heathrow Pret after work. After a weekend in South Africa it’s straight back into work on the Monday morning. Moving to England in your teens and playing for SA at the Olympics will be pretty surreal. Do you feel familiar surroundings will help you? It has all happened so quickly that it’s still sinking in. Playing for my country has always been my dream and to have the opportunity to play in the Olympics is one thing but for this to happen in such a

short period of time is something I didn’t even dream about. I hope to grab this opportunity with both hands because I have the added advantage of not only living down the road but also a lot of support from family and friends who will be watching and already have tickets. After the success in Delhi, do you feel the team can go all the way at the London Games? I don’t see why not. We have a great squad and when we click we are really dangerous. The key will be consistency. Favourite SA food? It has got to be a braai with Niknaks and biltong as a presnack. Lastly, out of pure curiosity, how did you get the nickname Spiko? When I first came to England they asked me to name all my nicknames, one of which was Spykerkop, which I got when I lost a dare and agreed to shave my hair off. Obviously the English folk couldn’t pronounce this so they just called me Spiker instead and it stuck. My other nickname is Rooney, because I apparently play like him and I’m also a big Man United fan. www.thesouthafrican.com/sport

by KWAME WILSON THE South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) last week confirmed that consumer product company Procter & Gamble (P&G) had agreed to a 10-year partnership that will start in time for the preparation of the London 2012 Olympic Games. P&G, the company behind many household staples such as Fairy Liquid, Head & Shoulders and Pampers, will also contribute to the development of South Africa’s stars of tomorrow by assisting youth sports development. This will come as great news

for South African sport, as Sascoc President Gideons Sam recently asked for financial backing for the South African Olympic team. Sascoc receives most of its funding from the National Lottery but has had trouble securing enough capital to allow top athletes to travel to the most prestigious tournaments and to train with the best facilities and coaching staff. Chinese clothing company Erke, which will serve as Team SA’s Olympic sponsor through to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, is locked into a deal worth R25 million. “This assistance is appreciated

and we are very excited about it,” Sam said at the press conference in Johannesburg. “It goes towards assisting athletes and ensures that every athlete gets a fair deal.” Stanislav Vecera, P&G’s vice president for South and East Africa said, “This collaboration is much more than a sponsorship. For P&G, it’s about bringing together our purposes of touching and improving lives and the Olympic purpose of building a better world through sport.” With the new deal in place, let’s hope the sponsorhip will allow Team SA to be ‘Head & Shoulders’ above the competition.

Janse van Rensburg and Moolman claim their maiden Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour victories

R

by STAFF REPORTER einardt Janse van Rensburg of Team MTN Qhubeka steered clear of two early crashes to claim his maiden Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour victory in a sprint finish on Sunday. Herman Fouche (Team Bonitas) improved on his third-place finish of last year by claiming second place in the 111km race, while Team Nu Water/CTM cyclist Jaco Venter came in third. Last year’s runner-up in the women’s race, Ashleigh Moolman

(Team Momentum Toyota) managed to avoid a massive crash involving more than 20 elite women riders to take the title. Defending champion Cherise Taylor was placed in a neck brace, and several other favourites were taken to hospital. Close on Moolman’s heels was teammate Lynette Burger, who fell to third place just before the finish after a spirited charge by Team Bizhub-fcf’s Catherine Williamson, who came second. An estimated 32,500 cyclists

took off from Hertzog Boulevard early on Sunday in what could only be described as perfect riding conditions. “The wind died down at about 4am, leaving cyclists with clear skies and mild conditions. However, temperatures really picked up toward midday and we had to dispatch additional water, Powerade and Coke supplies to refreshment stations along the route,” said David Bellairs, Marketing and Sponsorship Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

Janse van Rensburg said after the race that the front riders launched a series of attacks from about 10km from the finish. “The leading bunch really tried to tire each other out. When we were 400m from the finish line I looked back and saw two climbers – Kevin Evans and Jaco Venter – with sprinters like Arran Brown behind them. I decided to edge ahead of the bunch, just managing to hold the lead until I crossed.” Sports minister Fikile Mbalula completed the race in tandem

with professional rider Andrew McLean, raising awareness of the ‘I Play Fair’ anti-doping campaign. “We can’t just tell people they must live healthy lifestyles. We must lead from the front,” Mbalula said after completing the ride. Western Cape premier Helen Zille also finished the race on a tandem bike. Japie Malan, the oldest finisher, completed the race in five hours, 49 minutes, at the age of 92. Read Japie’s story on www.thesouthafrican.com/sport
