South Africans to march in London

| An initial event, ‘Unity in diversity against crime, racism and inequality’ marks the beginning of the SAY We Can movement, which aims to appeal to the SA Government with tangible solutions for a better South Africa by Staff reporter Trafalgar Square is well known for the many protests and demonstrations against human rights violations that occurred in South Africa under Apartheid law. On Saturday 13 June 2015 at 11 am a different kind of protest will descend upon the area. A Facebook event titled ‘SA march in London’ has attracted a fair amount of public interest in just few weeks. The organisers of this event are confident the campaign will not only be positive, fun and engaging

but will also provide a platform for South Africans to really make their voices heard. "We are just a small group of ordinary South Africans who understand everyone’s frustrations with issues in South Africa," says campaign spokesman, Neil Kohler. "Negativity breeds negativity, and that is most definitely not what we are about. We will not tolerate any racist, separatist or negative behaviour or signage on the day. We encourage every passionate South African to join us wearing their proudly South African colours." The organisers have a structured

long-term plan and their core objective is to appeal to the South African government to provide proficient governance and accountability by upholding the South African constitution and legal system in order to promote a globally competitive and growing economy as well as encourage social cohesion in order to create a prosperous and safe South Africa for all who live in it. This event will be the launch of the SAY We Can movement (South Africa Yes We Can) and is titled ‘Unity in diversity against crime, racism & inequality’. The event is non-political and will provide a platform for ordinary South Africans

to contribute towards a petition targeting these issues. On 13 June, the event organisers will explain in detail why they created this campaign, what their long term plans are and how they envision that ordinary South Africans, irrespective of where in the world they are, can actively promote and support the ideal of a nation that is what many in their hearts hope it could be. The SA march in London takes place outside the South African High Commission, Trafalgar Square, London on Saturday 13 June at 11am. The scenic town of Stellenbosch has been nominated for UK publication, Family Traveller's first Family Traveller Awards, under the category ‘Best destination – long haul’. By Sandy Cadiz-Smith Go swimming Here’s a radical thought…swimming outdoors in London. You have to be a member to swim the Serpentine in Hyde Park, but it’s only £20 a year. Or try Hampstead Heath with its Ladies’ Pond, Men’s Pond, Mixed Pond and Parliament Hill Lido. They are open all year around and are life guarded. The Tooting Bec Lido in south-west London is the largest fresh water open air swimming pool in England. There’s a 90m pool, children’s paddling pool and cafe. Open May to September. Hit the roof top bars There are dozens of them across the city, here are three favourites. The Queen Elizabeth Roof Garden Bar & Cafe is an oasis designed by the Eden Project, a garden on high with a cafe and sparkling river views. SushiSamba is the highest outdoor dining terrace in Europe with 360-degree views of the city. It serves an exotic mix of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine. Radio Rooftop Bar sits on the 10th floor of the ME London Hotel in Covent Garden. It’s modern and glamorous with panoramic views and great tapas. Row down the river Escape the traffic and get a different perspective. Cruises are frequent and popular, though queues can be testing. Launch your own canoe along the Thames, the Wandle in South London or to explore London’s canals in Limehouse. You can kayak at night past the splendour of the Houses of

Parliament (kayakinglondon.com) or be guided through the sights by British Canoe Union instructors. Enjoy alfresco entertainment The Scoop is an 800-seater outdoor amphitheatre near London Bridge offering free entertainment, including live music and outdoor movies and theatre production. The Globe shows Shakespeare’s classics as they were meant to be seen. The Regents Park Open Air Theatre offers classics like Peter Pan, The Seagull, Lord of the Flies and Seven Bridges for Seven Brothers. Follow in Olympic footsteps There’s plenty to see do at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Or you can get physical. Swim in the pool or take a dive off one of the Olympic boards, work out in the gym, take an exercise class or play badminton in the Copper Box Arena or cycle in the VeloPark. Zoom to the top of Britain’s tallest sculpture – the Arcelormittal Orbit. Go farming Who’d have guessed that London has over a dozen farms. Spitalfields Farm is the closest to the centre. Vauxhall City Farm has plenty of animals, including horses, goats, sheep, geese, rabbits and even alpacas. Possibly the most spectacular is Mudchute Farm, a working farm in East London with the towers of Canary Wharf forming a striking background. Explore the canals Hop aboard a traditional narrowboat and explore the magical world of London’s canal network. Boats leave

from Little Venice and Camden Lock Market (well worth spending time in itself) and take you on a peaceful journey away from London’s hustle and bustle. You can also walk the towpaths and there are guided tours on Regents Canal through the Islington Tunnel. Take a table tennis challenge For six to eight weeks in summer there’s a ping pong (or whiff-whaff as Boris Johnson calls it) festival with tables popping up all over the capital. It’s free and bats and balls are supplied – just grab a bat from the side of the table and join in. Take to the sky London’s only cable car crosses the Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks. From April to November you can take a stunning, extended night flight. Watch the sun set and see the city come alive after dark. Join the Primrose Hill Set The term was coined for a group of actors from the area, including the likes of Johnny Lee Miller, Sadie Frost and Jude Law. There’s great shopping, pubs, cafes and restaurants. Climb the Hill for a wonderfully clear view of Central London. It’s dog walker’s heaven and there’s a playground to keep the kids happy. Meander around the colourful, leafy streets of Victorian terraces and pop into local pub The Queens, at the bottom of the hill, keeping your eyes peeled for celebs.

By Andrew Macfarlane Our relationship to home brands is as much sentimental as it is financial. South African brands are strong way beyond our national borders and out of a list of 25 most valued African brands, 13 are South African, 11 are Nigerian and one is Kenyan. “What’s clear to all of us, as South Africans,” says Neil Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of the 100% not-for-profit social enterprise Relate Bracelets, a brand that is already growing internationally, despite only being five years old, “is that to see a home-grown brand in another country stimulates incredibly strong feelings of national pride. At home, we’re free to criticise our government, but take us out of the country and we’ll fiercely and proudly defend our place as a world player. And nothing says ‘world player’ quite like international brands do.” Relate Bracelets, a not-for-profit social enterprise that has grown by 70% in the past financial year, is a brand that is getting recognition in places like the US, the UK and Australia. The organisation makes beaded bracelets for causes, and the proceeds are shared between the bracelet makers – older women who support Aids-orphaned families alone as well as young school leavers, who do the finishing and packing of the bracelets, as well as the cause the bracelet supports and running costs. The model’s success, says Robinson, is down to excellent brand equity, which is already seeping beyond

South Africa’s borders. Although the non-profit sector across the world is hotly contested, Robinson says the model’s success is a direct result of growing brand equity. “It’s also a unique concept that has a particularly South African feel to it because of their business model, applying corporate business principles to the non-profit sector, as well as the beaded product.” Danny Bryer, Sales, Marketing and Revenue Director of Protea Hotels, part of Marriott International, says: “South African brands stand their ground in a competitive international market. There’s been a surge of interest from well-known international hospitality brands in Africa, and yet Protea Hotels continues to grow on the continent.” Protea Hotels remains Africa’s leading hotel group with more than 109 properties in South Africa and six other African countries, including Zambia, Nigeria, Namibia, Ghana and Uganda. Another five hotels in Africa are set to come on line in the next while. “There’s a familiarity about the brands, a sense that you know what you’re getting, when you step into a Protea Hotel in Zambia, or a Shoprite in Zimbabwe. That sort of brand recognition and loyalty is priceless, both to consumers abroad and to the brands themselves.” These brands are not running in an international race to keep South Africans happy when they’re abroad. They’re international brands because

they’re competing in an international market. “The consumers of South African brands overseas are almost by default not South African. There simply aren’t enough South Africans in other countries to make it viable. To take your brand to the international market means you have the experience, brand equity, know-how and financial savvy to compete there.” So, however sentimental we might get when we see our home grown darlings playing in the international park with the global players, we have to remember that part of our pride is that South Africa is a business force to be reckoned with. Here are the five areas in which our brands do exceptionally well on the continent and overseas: 1. Financial services. Think Investec and Discovery. Think Absa. 2. Don’t laugh: Eskom is the thirteenth most valued brand in Africa. 3. Telecommunications: MTN is the most valued African brand, based on brand value in Africa, as calculated Brand Finance. Telkom is the 12th most valued African brand on that same list. 4. Fast food, alcohol and hospitality: Nando’s. SAB Miller. Protea Hotels. Distell. Their financial success and continued growth attest to a voracious appetite for the oldfashioned “lekker kuier” and smiley South African service. 5. Retail stores: Checkers. Shoprite.

The decision to leave South Africa is one that builds over time. Subconsciously, at some point, leaving becomes the right thing for you to do. The word “better” becomes part of your motivation. Part of what you tell those who ask why. A better life, a better job, a better opportunity. A better place to raise children. Sometimes the only cure for life’s hiccups is to turn your world upside down. Behind difficult goodbyes, excitement tingles. A heartache for the familiar is neutralised by an itch for the unknown. An itching to go. To be. Like restless animals, forever seeking the greenest grass to graze, as the grass browns and dries in one spot, so we are drawn to another. It makes sense for our survival. We yearn to try, to tread, to taste. So we squeeze our lives into boxes and set sail. Before long, the complicated

streets in the foreign spot you find yourself in become familiar. You grapple with being a temporary resident, an expat, an immigrant. A little further along the way, the hiccups come back. They’re different this time, but there nonetheless. You hold your breath. Some find relief in staying. Some find relief in going home. No matter the decision, the pull of home is impossible to ignore. You find yourself wondering… Were your motivations for leaving South Africa strong enough to quench your desire to return? Has your hope of a “better” life really bettered your life? If you leave South Africa, leave South Africa with dignity, for the right reasons. If you talk of South Africa, talk about her with respect. South Africa may not be your current resting point, she may not be your first choice. But she is home.

South African Electric Night 'Afronauts' launches in Clapham South

| Friday 5 June sees the first in a series of African club and video nights at Gigalum in Clapham South. DJ & Artist Gordon Glyn-Jones, music producer Hilton Caswell and video designer Leroy Taylor, present an eclectic mix of Southern-African electro beats by Staff Reporter There have of late been nudges of a ‘soutpiel revolution’ in the London music scene. For the first time in over five years we can count on four to five South African acts that can draw hefty crowds and, have graced the covers of mags such as Dazed and Confused and DJ mag. Die Antwoord is the most prominent, then Goldfish, DJ Black Coffee, Freshlyground and following in their footsteps are acts like Fantasma and Spoek Mathambo. So what have they been doing differently from so many derivative SA acts that make a big noise and then fizzle? (You know who you are). Well, it’s two things. One, being original and gathering the influences just sitting there for the taking and then two, weaving them together into something new with international level productions. To say all these acts have created one ‘sound’ would be inaccurate, but to say they all share a unique magpielike South African flavour that is splinter-nuwe and happening is fact. Recently artist and DJ Gordon Glyn-Jones met with Hilton Caswell, a dance music producer in his own right and resident at Gigalum Club, in Clapham. They discovered a shared

love for this sound and decided to launch a regular Friday to allow people to enjoy the beats on a more regular basis. “With roots in House, Mbaqanga, Rave, Township Dance, Hip Hop, and Afro-Jazz there is an electro alchemy transforming SA’s myriad beat cultures into something fresh,” said Gordon Glyn-Jones. “We live and love this music and want to share it with London clubbers. Simple as that.” One of the aspects of all these acts is that their videos are equally punchy, colourful and original. When he heard about the night, designer Leroy Taylor jumped at the chance to play videos and SA visuals, so the night will be a visually intoxicating night of raw African dance beats. Celebrate South African music with Starfish Greathearts Foundation | South African born pianist Renée Reznek, international flautist Nancy Ruffer and the Queen of Afro-Jazz Pinise Saul accompanied by jazz composer and musician Simon Wallace will be giving a concert on the 2 July for Starfish Greathearts Foundation that will be held in the Rosslyn Hill Chapel in Hampstead by staff reporter Renée Reznek often performs locally and has earned a reputation for lucid and sensitive interpretations of 20th and 21st century piano music. Nancy Ruffer specialises in contemporary flute repertoire and has given numerous first performances in Britain and abroad. She was born in Detroit and received a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. That same year she was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship to do post-graduate study at The Royal Academy of Music. She was awarded the Kranichsteiner Prize for Performance at Darmstadt in 1984 and was elected an Associate of The Royal Academy of Music. Here we take a look at a few famous faces who were at some point, or are currently, banned from entering the UK. The families of presidents have often led to headaches for their siblings. Barack Obama’s half-brother, Samson Obama, is no exception. Samson lived illegally in the UK for seven years and was investigated by police in November 2009 for an alleged sexual assault. He denied all allegations and was not charged, but he did give a false name during the investigation. This deception came to light when he applied for a tourist visa for Britain in 2009. Immigration agents confronted him at the UK Nairobi embassy and denied him a visa. Less surprising is the fact that infamous pot-smoking rapper Snoop Dogg was denied entry. In 2006 he and his entourage were involved in a brawl and arrested at Heathrow Airport on their way to South Africa. They were released the next day, but the Home Office decided that Snoop could not enter the UK for the foreseeable future. His visa was denied the following year, cancelling a European tour with P Diddy. This decision was overturned in 2010 after a review showed Snoop to be abiding by the rules, while the security and police appeared to be the ones doing the pushing. Another entertainment star battling to cross the UK border is rapper, singer, dancer and actor, Chris Brown. He was denied entry into the UK after his assault on his now ex-girlfriend, Rihanna. He applied for a visa in 2010 but was refused as he was “guilty of a serious criminal offence”. It’s nice to know that the UK Visas and Immigration treats everyone with the same rules. “domestic goddess of all that is clean and organized”, is more of an unusual suspect than Snoop or Chris Brown. In 2004, Stewart spent five months in jail after being convicted of obstructing justice. Despite her sentence having little impact on her business, she was denied entry to the UK in 2008. Michael Savage, a US radio host, kicked up quite a fuss when he was banned from the UK and named by former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith as one of the Home Office’s 16 “least wanted” in 2009. He threatened to sue Smith and called her a “lunatic”, accusing her of defamation for grouping him with hate preachers and mass murderers. While Savage considers himself to be a conservative nationalist, critics accuse him of inciting extremism and fostering hatred. He has been at the centre of many controversies, one of which concerned a comment on autism where he stated that, “In 99% of cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” And finally, a name that probably won’t surprise many as being banned is that of Edward Snowden, the US citizen who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) to the media in June 2013. The information, contained in thousands of documents, revealed a large number of global surveillance programs run by, amongst others, the NSA. Some may feel that a person who acts as a whistleblower on this kind of level should not be denied access to the UK, while others, maybe especially those in higher power, are likely to feel differently. It’s tough enough to get into the UK already, but it helps if you’ve got a clean criminal record, you don’t get into fights at airports and, to be safe, you avoid angering the immigration officials. Is Africa’s time now?

| I recently attended the Oxford Africa Conference 2015 (22nd-23rd May) on behalf of Homecoming Revolution. It was interesting to hear views on the various challenges facing such a rapidly growing continent, as well as stories from professionals who have recently made the move back home

by Graham du Plessis Africa is the second fastest growing region in the world. There are now 465 companies each generating over $1billion in revenue per year. Technology is breaking down borders on the continent and there are numerous innovative tech start-ups offering pioneering solutions to healthcare, education, and business challenges. The consumer success story of the last decade has been driven by technology and a growing middle class – with a young, dynamic population, demand for products and services can only continue to grow. According to Acha Leke of McKinsey, Africa offers the highest rate of return on investments, which explains why a record $4 billion was raised by private equity investors in 2014. With half of the world’s arable land, the continent will play a vital role feeding a rapidly growing global population, whilst its mineral wealth will literally provide the building blocks for future growth and development. Considering the incredible natural beauty and biodiversity across Africa, tourism also looks likely to continue building upon the impressive growth of recent years. South Africa will have to work hard to ensure the new visa regulations, aimed at protecting

children, don’t undermine the tourism sector. As we know all too well in South Africa, skills shortages and infrastructure issues must be addressed in order to ensure Africa continues to rise. Several speakers, including President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, spoke of the need to increase regional trade. In Europe a staggering 70% of trade is regional in nature, whereas in Africa the figure currently stands at only 11%. This indicates how much work is still required to develop regional partnerships within Africa. Stronger relationships with neighbouring countries would undoubtedly lead to faster development and economic growth. What is more, many African companies are importing products and services at a high cost from far flung countries, when in some cases these are already available on the continent. Again, it is infrastructure, transport and communications that need to be developed, in order to build relationships and increase regional trade. Many of the conference’s delegates, speakers and panellists have returned to Africa after studying and/or working overseas. Homecoming Revolution (who introduce worldwide African professionals to employers and help facilitate the logistics of relocation) state that 359,000 South Africans have returned home over the

last five years. At the recent Speed Meet Africa event in London, CEO of Homecoming Revolution, Angel Jones cited various reasons for returning, including “the desire to be near friends and family, the prospect of developing an innovative career, the climate and outdoor lifestyle”. The Oxford Africa Conference’s “Female Diaspora” discussion was particularly interesting, as the theme of repatriation was examined in some detail. Frances Mensah-Williams (Chief Executive of Interims for Development) and Sneha Shah (MD of sub-Saharan Africa for Thomson Reuters) both talked passionately about the fantastic opportunity expats have to make a difference when returning to the continent, as well as the lifestyle benefits one can enjoy. Frances suggested that professionals keen on moving back should first “consider their skills and research how they can be used”. Sneha Shah (who moved to Johannesburg from the USA) said she wanted to move to South Africa so that her children “could play outside and experience different social interactions and cultures”. With so much innovation, opportunity and potential, it is little wonder that thousands of skilled expats are returning to unleash their skills back home.

by john cole-morgan After reviewing Jan Braai’s first book “Fireworks” a few months ago, the second instalment “Red Hot” left me salivating and wishing this London weather would hurry up and get warm so I can fire up the BBQ... I mean braai! This second edition can be read individually or as an extension of “Fireworks”, completing this incredible encyclopaedia of “the five and ancient art” of the Braai. “Red hot” focuses on the added extras that will ensure your braai is utterly sublime. This includes the art of sauces, patés, broodstokkies, and things you didn’t even think of adding to your adventures on the braai. The additional potjie recipes are not just mouth watering, they evoke a reaction inside you that will mend a broken spirit. Curry recipes are aplenty, my favourite being the the Spicy Potato Soup with Chorizo recipe. I must

admit I made mine in the oven, but please don’t judge me, on a pouring wet ‘spring day’ in the English countryside, there was no way of firing up a braai. This recipe has left a lasting impression on me. So much so that during the eight or nine sunny days we have in the UK, I shall redeem myself in Jan’s eyes and prepare this same dish on the fire, on every possible occasion of sun! It’s not just the meat recipes that are amazing, the sauce recipes are spectacular too. The vegetables recipes, the rosti recipes, the cous cous recipes… All provide such deliciousness and allow you to cater for your vegan and vegetarian friends with ease. The macaroni cheese potjie recipe will leave everyone – excluding the vegans – reaching for their potjies to put on an open flame. The cheese fondue also leaves a reader begging for the sunshine. The best, however, has to be the last. The sweet-toothed amongst us, will be positively drooling reading the recipes

for Brandy tiramisu, potjie Malva pudding, apple tart potjie and sago pudding. There is even a recipe for braai gluhwein… Now where else would you find this? There is something for everyone in this book. Every homesick Saffa will read these pages and feel nostalgic. Every South African still in the motherland will need this to improve their skills. A precedent has been set and Jan Braai has set the bar high. There are reasons holidays are named after this man. He is a man amongst men, and if the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, Jan Braai will be be spreading the love for all. The recipes are simple and easy for the most novice of readers. Commonsense is needed, granted, but with that, almost every page will be a personal triumph. A triumph a reader can take credit for, well until the people you are cooking for also buy this book!

The release of important data from the US and the UK had a weakening effect on the currency. On Monday, the Dollar hit a month high against a basket of major currencies, including the Rand, after the Federal Reserve announced an interest hike prediction for later this year. The Rand weakened by 0.57% following this announcement. The Rand fell to a two-week low against the Dollar on Tuesday after the release of unemployment data. First quarter indicators, released by Statistics South Africa, showed that the economy only expanded by 1.3% and the unemployment rate had worsened. John Ashbourne of Capital Economics noted that this disappointing data may result in a revision of South Africa’s 2% growth forecast for 2015. Early on

Friday the Rand weakened a tad more against the Dollar, hovering near a five-week low. What to look out for this week: Going into June we will see the usual first week of monthly data, including PMI figures and US non-farm payrolls. This week will be interesting for the Euro with significant data released on Tuesday and Wednesday; this will likely influence the Rand. On Thursday, the Bank of England will announce the UK interest rate decision, this is likely to affect the Pound and other major currencies.

Rooting out illegal immigrants and boosting deportations Illegal working will be made a criminal offence. The implication of this is that wages paid to illegal immigrants can be seized as proceeds of crime. Businesses will also be informed when their employees’ visas are expiring and employing an illegal immigrant will be against the law. The current pilot scheme whereas it is required of landlords to check their tenant’s immigration status will be rolled out nationwide. The Government also plans to make rules easier for landlords to evict illegal immigrants more quickly. Currently, illegal immigrants cannot open bank accounts. In future the Government will require banks to take action against existing bank accounts held by illegal immigrants. The current ‘deport first, appeal later’ rule for foreign criminals will be extended to all immigration appeals, except asylum cases. Reforming immigration and labour market rules In order to reduce the need for skilled workers from outside the EU, the UK Government aims to improve the training of British workers. This will be done by inter alia creating apprenticeships for 3 million people. Businesses that use foreign labour might be expected to help fund this through a new visa levy.

A weekend of firsts, doubles and good-byes – Vodacom Super Rugby Round 16 Review

by saru It was a weekend of Vodacom Super Rugby firsts and doubles as the DHL Stormers consolidated their place at the top of the South African Conference, while the Emirates Lions and Cell C Sharks both got one over their Australian opponents. The weekend started on a false note for the Vodacom Bulls on Friday though, as they came up short by 22-16 in their third tour match, in Canberra against the Brumbies. The Cell C Sharks won their

second consecutive match against Aussie opposition when they beat the Rebels by 25-21 in Durban on Friday evening. It was the KwaZuluNatalians’ fourth win over the side from Melbourne, who is still winless after five seasons of coming to South Africa. Saturday’s derby in Cape Town between the DHL Stormers and Toyota Cheetahs ended in a rather one-sided 42-12 win for the home team as the visitors from Bloemfontein bid farewell to their coach, Naka Drotské, after eight

seasons and 118 matches in charge of the men from Central South Africa. Only three coaches – Frans Ludeke of the Cats and Vodacom Bulls, Ewen McKenzie (Waratahs, Reds) Robbie Deans (Crusaders) coached in more matches than Drotské, who guided the Toyota Cheetahs to a spot in the top six two seasons ago. The final match of the weekend was a real humdinger as the Emirates Lions got their first-ever win as a franchise over the defending champion Waratahs, by 27-22 in Johannesburg, their ninth victory of

the season. No fewer than six players – two South Africans and four Aussies – scored a brace of tries this weekend. They are Seabelo Senatla (DHL Stormers), Ruan Combrinck (Emirates Lions), Henry Speight (Brumbies), Scott Higginbotham (Rebels), Quade Cooper (Reds) and Lachie Turner (Reds). Blitzbok star Senatla scored his first try at Vodacom Super Rugby level, as did his DHL Stormers team-mate Vincent Koch and Heimar Williams from the Cell C Sharks.
