| Two South African entrepreneurs will share in a £1 million prize after winning the ‘New Things’ category in Sir Richard Branson’s annual ‘Pitch to Rich’ innovation competition

By Peter church

South African entrepreneurs Jeff Paterson and Oliver du Toit won one of three categories in Sir Richard Branson’s fourth annual ‘Pitch to Rich’ competition. The victory in the ‘New Things’ category of one of the world’s most prestigious entrepreneurship battles is now poised to lift their business idea – Fourex – into revolutionising the way the world exchanges foreign currency. To win Paterson had to pitch the Fourex concept live to a panel of Virgin executives – including Branson – on the Virgin Media Business (VMB) website stream during the weekend. So large was their belief in Fourex that the two South Africans spent “every cent” over the past three years to develop it. The idea behind Fourex is to “put currency exchange on steroids”, explains Paterson. “Over 1 billion people travel internationally every year, and chances are that most will return with a handful of leftover foreign currency. The self-service machines will exchange both coins and notes from almost any country in the world for cash. Over the past 20 years, UK residents have

Photo by Facebook amassed over £3 billion worth of leftover currency because traditional Banks and Bureau de Changes will not exchange foreign coins or low value/exotic currencies. By mixing technology with common sense, we break the mould, and challenge the norm," says Paterson. To make the process even more practical, Fourex has signed deals with London Underground (TfL)

Photo by Facebook and Westfield shopping centres in London to give the business access to the millions of UK residents and tourists that travel around the capital every day. The South Africans have come a long way since they first tried to raise funds for their invention. In the process they have also endured hundreds of rejections. Sir Richard Branson said his team

set out to find great business ideas with the potential to disrupt a market. “Judging by the calibre of the finalists, we have found the very best. The people that make a difference are the ones that have the courage to overcome obstacles in order to turn an idea into a successful business.” Winners in each category (the others are ‘Start-Up’ and ‘Grow’) share in a prize of £1 million.

Black economic empowerment creates substantial value | A financial research house has put a pricetag on Black Economic Empowerment initiatives By Staff Reporter A research project by Intellidex financial research house has revealed that the combined total of the JSE’s top 100 BEE deals amount to around R317 billion. Most of these projects are long-term BEE investments into communities, deals that need to mature in order to improve the lives of those they aim to benefit.

Since its inception, Black Economic Empowerment — or Broader Based Black Economic Empowerment – has not proven to work as well as it should for those most in need, and has been the subject of much controversy. Here is an indication of how things have changed: 34% of the total value has already matured and can be used immediately by its beneficiaries.

64% is still live, but will mature within the next five years and become available to its beneficiaries. 26% of the total comes from staff schemes 22% of it benefits broad based community schemes 62% is made up of companies and individuals who, through their work, benefit a broad base of beneficiaries. The three largest deals for 2014

alone are FirstRand (R23 billion), Sanlam (R14 billion) and Standard Bank (R11 billion). The two largest deals waiting to pay out are Exxaro (R17 billion) and Naspers (R14 billion). “The amount generated shows that recent statements that BEE deals do not create substantial value are false,” said Stuart Theobald of Intellidex.

South africa's drop in tourism not linked to new visa rules, says government | The SA government and tourism bodies are at loggerheads about the reasons for the sudden drop in tourists to South Africa

By Peter Church Government says xenophobic attacks and the outbreak of the Ebola virus in west Africa could have led to the decrease in visitors to South Africa. They could not find a link with new visa regulations as claimed by opposition parties and travel bodies.

Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni said in a statement that it is impossible to attribute a drop in tourism figures to the new visa regulations. The rules require minors to carry an abridged birth certificate while visitors from certain countries needs to undergo biometric testing. Travel bodies have blamed these

rules for a “massive drop” in air ticket sales since the regulations were implemented, but Apleni has called for a “full and more in-depth assessment”. The new regulations were implemented at the beginning of June and it’s been reported that the tourism industry has lost R886

million so far. But Apleni said it is unfair and convenient for critics to place the blame on the Home Affairs Department and ignore the impact of the recent spate of xenophobic attacks as well as the Ebola outbreak in west Africa which could also have scared visitors away. The new rules are aimed at

complying with the Children’s Act to prevent child trafficking, but the Tourism Business Council said the requirement is not standard practice across the world. Tourism Business Council CEO Mmatsatsi Ramawela says the policy keeps changing and this is affecting their turnover.

| Making your own pastry is very satisfying. With a little effort, learning this technique will give you pastry that’s much better than the frozen block from the shop. Sweet pastry is ideal for a range of fillings – Lemon, jam, chocolate, frangipane, or as my recipe today, treacle tart

By Petrus madutlela Treacle tart is a real guilty pleasure for me. I love the sharpness of the lemon that cuts through the delicious sweet stickiness of the syrup. When making pastry, you just need to follow a couple of simple rules – use a light touch and chill! Keep all your ingredients as cold as possible, and mix just enough to combine. If you work the pastry excessively, gluten in the flour will develop, causing the pastry to shrink in the oven in and be tough. If you have any pastry left over, it can be wrapped and kept in the freezer. Use a 22 – 23 cm shallow tart tin, preferably with removable base. This recipe serves 8 people. Serve it slightly warm with ice cream, or a good dollop of cream. Ingredients Pastry 225g unsalted butter, softened 1tbsp caster sugar 2 medium egg yolks 250g plain flour, and a bit extra for dusting 1 tsp vanilla extract Filling 100g fresh white breadcrumbs 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g golden syrup Pinch of ground ginger 1 lemon, zest and juice Cream or ice cream, caramel sauce, to serve

Method Grease your tart tin with butter. Add the flour to a food processor. Add in the egg yolks and blend. Cut the cold butter into little cubes, and add into the mixer while it’s on. Add the sugar and vanilla extract and turn the mixer to “pulse”. The dough will take on the consistency of wet sand; continue pulsing and the dough will begin to form a ball (add a little cold water if it looks dry). Turn off the machine and remove the pastry. Knead a couple of times, then wrap in cling film. Place in the fridge and leave to rest for 30 minutes. Dust a work surface with flour. Unwrap the pastry and place it in the centre of the flour. Roll out into a disc no more than 4 mm thick. Move the dough over the top of the tart tin, using the rolling pin to carry it. Use your thumbs to press the pastry into the sides of the tin. Don’t worry if the pastry breaks, it can be patched up with another piece. Prick

the tart base with a fork, and pop back in the fridge for 30 minutes. While waiting for the pastry to chill, pre heat the oven to fan 160°c, std oven 180°C, gas 4. Then you can make the filling. Heat the syrup and until just warm. Stir in the other ingredients. When the tart case is chilled, line it with parchment paper and fill with dried rice, or baking beans if you have them. Bake in the middle of the oven for 20 mins (top shelf is too hot). Take out the parchment paper carefully with the beans / rice. Cut the excess pastry of the edges of the tin. Spoon in the filling and return to the oven for 30 – 35 mins. It should still be a little wobbly in the middle. Cool on a wire rack. Enjoy with your choice of ice cream or cream, and add a few more calories with some caramel sauce if you want to really indulge.

A bumper year of accolades for Groot Constantia By staff reporter

Most recently, and an exciting achievement for South Africa’s oldest wine producing estate, Groot Constantia made the list of Top 10 South African Wine Producers as chosen by the SA Wine Index. Closely preceding this, Groot Constantia’s 2013 Shiraz achieved a Gold medal and placed in the Top 10 at the 2015 Syrah-du-Monde awards, as well as being selected amongst the top 12 out of 202 entrants at the Shiraz SA Wine Challenge. Groot Constantia’s 2012 Grand Constance wine achieved a Grand Gold award at the 2015 Monde Selection International Wine Contest in May; and Groot Constantia’s 2013 Chardonnay was judged as the Best in the World at the 22nd annual Chardonnay du Monde competition held in March. Groot Constantia's wines continue to rake in the awards with the estate having won a total of 89 top accolades since 2003. These latest awards come close on the back of the 2015 Taj Awards where Groot Constantia walked away with several coveted trophies – including being selected as the “Most Iconic Producer” -

indicating that this year is a bumper one for Groot Constantia. In fact the estate has won a total of 18 gold awards over the last 12 months alone. Groot Constantia is celebrating its 330th year of continuous wine production this year – with the official birthday date being 13 July. To celebrate this momentous occasion, and the estates winning streak, Groot Constantia is running an exciting competition – the “What does your favourite Groot Constantia wine look like?” competition. The competition requires entrants to take a picture of their favourite bottle

of Groot Constantia wine, post it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (@ GrootConstantia) - using the hashtag #330GrootConstantia - and stand a chance to win amazing prizes such as wines, wine tastings and cellar tours – with a grand prize of all three for one lucky winner. 330 years and going strong - the Groot Constantia trademark is also one of the oldest surviving trademarks in the world today and the estate continues to move from strength to strength. London property prices at their highest yet | House prices in London have risen by 388% since 1995. For the size of a double garage in London's most expensive areas, you could be living the dream in South Africa

by John Cole Morgan

It is scary when you look at the latest figures released by the Halifax bank this week. In 1996 I remember my very first home I lived in cost R109,950. For that you got 105 square metres, a patio, two parking spaces and a communal garden with a pool. Now, it seems, that same money would not even get you anything more than a space to stand up in, in London's most expensive property areas. Chelsea has yet again topped the charts with a single square metre of land in the SW3 post code will set you back £11,635. That works out to roughly R222,000 for a single square metre of land in London's most desirable postcode. Following closely behind Chelsea, in the London area, are Westminster coming in at £9,571 with Camden slotting in third at £8,829 a square metre. In fact, even the cheapest square metre of property within the M25 corridor comes in at £5,900. And the cheapest London properties cost R112,000 per square

metre. These prices within the capital have jumped up by 388% since the records of 1995, just twenty years ago. Many people who have not paid off their mortgage from 1995 will now be sitting with homes worth far more than they ever dreamed of. While on paper it sounds great, try selling your home in London and moving to another place within London and you might not be that much better off. If, like millions of Britons, you haven't got funds of that level, you can look further afield to much cheaper areas. One of the cheapest areas to live in the UK is Aberdare in South Wales costing a trivial £910 by comparison. If the prices don't put you off buying in London, the size of the home you get is also much smaller for your buck in the capital. Halifax have calculated that the average London home sold of late measures just 90 square metres, and with the usually non-existent outside space you pay more and indeed generally get less. In Wales the

average size of a homes is 117 square metres compared to much smaller homes in the capital. So what else can you buy with your money if you were not so keen on buying a single square metrr of Chelsea dirt? £11,635 buys you a really nice small new car (think Polo or Jazz). But a year of fees at a top University in the UK costs £9,000, so maybe that might be a better option. So a small 25 square metre home in Chelsea would set back the average person £290,875 (using the Halifax figures) and in Rands, that's roughly R5,5million. Any way you cut it, if you have R5,5million to buy a home, South Africa will buy you much more for your money and you will have a home that will make anyone keen to come and visit. £225k gets you something about the size of a double garage in London's most expensive areas, but in SA you can pretty much live the life we all dream of.

GBP/ZAR daily exchange rates

Rand weakens as Greek debt crisis worsens by 1st contact The spotlight is on Greece this week as it heads for debt default and a possible exit from the Eurozone. The European Central Bank stated on Sunday that it would not increase its financial support to Greek banks, which has led to a dramatic escalation in the country’s debt crisis. As it is one of South Africa’s major trading currencies, volatility in the Euro has a direct effect on Rand stability. The energy department has announced new fuel prices for July. This is likely to feed into the notion of higher inflation risk and cause further weakening for the Rand. The Pound has pushed higher and higher against the Rand in 2015 and many reports suggest that the rate may hit the 20.00 mark, based on the

momentum of recent rate movements. Should the SARB decide on an interest rate hike, the Rand could slightly reverse its latest decline. What to look for this week? There is plenty of data coming from Germany and around the general Eurozone area that will affect the Rand’s standing against all the major currencies. ZAR Consumer Confidence data will be released on Thursday this week and may indicate where the Rand is heading.

| The past months BIC heard a lot of heart-breaking stories from couples and families who were or are adversely affected by the UK immigration rules, requiring a minimum income of £18,600 for spouse visa applications

by Breytenbachs

The UK Spouse Visa has been one of the most controversial UK immigration topics over the past couple of years with the introduction of the minimum income requirement. Families and couples were (and are) torn apart with the introduction of the financial requirements that were found by the UK High Court to be ‘unjustified’ and ‘disproportionate’. As some of the most frequently asked questions posed to our BIC immigration consultants are on the UK Spouse Visa, we have decided to compile a list with some answers in order to shed some light on this immigration route. What is the financial requirement for the UK Spouse Visa? The UK family migration rules require a minimum income of £18,600 for sponsoring a spouse or partner, rising to £22,400 for also sponsoring a child and an additional £2,400 for each further child. In cases where the application is done from within the UK, the £18,600 can be made up from the income of both parties, and it should thus be easier for the couple to fulfil the criteria. The income of an applicant or sponsor working in the UK in salaried or non-salaried employment or selfemployment may now, after a resent change to the immigration rules, include income from work undertaken overseas. Can I switch from the Tier 2 Visa to the Spouse Visa when I marry my British fiancée later this year? Yes, once you get married, you will have the option of switching to a UK Spouse Visa or staying on your Tier 2 permit. There is however no obligation on you to switch to the Spouse Visa. The application for the UK Spouse Visa can be done from within the UK. Unfortunately, if you do decide to switch to the Spouse Visa, your qualifying period for permanent residency will re-start. The main advantage of the UK Spouse Visa is that there are no work restrictions, whereas with a Tier 2 permit you are only allowed to work for your sponsering employer.

What types of relationships are considered valid in order to qualify under this immigration route? The relationship can be any of the following: ∞Married or civil partners, ∞Living together in a relationship akin to marriage for longer than 2 years, ∞Engaged to be married or to become civil partners. You will also have to prove that you and your partner are 18 years or older and in a genuine relationship. Are there any alternatives if we are not able to fulfil the financial requirements of this route? Yes, couples, who are not able to meet the financial requirement, can also look into the so-called Surinder Singh route. This route entails that the EU partner must exercise his/her EU treaty rights (by working, being selfemployed, self-sufficient or a student for example) and live anywhere in the European Economic Area with his/her non-EU partner for a period of at least three months. After exercising this EEA citizenship right, the family can gain access to the UK, as they are then covered by European law. There would thus be no need to apply under the UK family migration rules, and the family will only need to apply for the EEA family permit, which does not require a minimum income threshold. If you consider this route, we recommend that you first seek expert advice in your unique circumstances. How long does it take to qualify for permanent residence, after obtaining a UK spouse visa? You will be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain after you have lived in the UK for five years, provided that you can prove you satisfy the criteria for the spouse status and indefinite leave to remain at the end of this period. www.bic-immigration.com or info@ bic-immigration.com

The legacy of In2Touch continues to shine by In2Touch

In2Touch started in back in 2003 to help those players wanting to play touch more regularly and to develop touch in London and England. We’d like to thank a few of the teams that have put in the effort and made touch part of their family With the summer season of O2Touch under way, we'd like to look back and acknowledge a few of the clubs that have contributed to developing the game in London and spreading the word of touch among their communities. For many years now, over the spring, summer and even winter seasons, teams come back to play in the touch leagues. It’s as if each year these touch families get together to play a great social game and relive their younger days, by putting many of the newer and much younger teams in their place. This was evident in the Regents Park spring season when veterans of the league, Green & Gold, took home the winners trophy in both the men’s and mixed divisions on Tuesday night. They have also stepped up and pushed their boundaries by competing in the toughest O2Touch league in Europe, that is the Super League in Putney/Wandsworth. This has proved to be very fruitful for the club and players, as a few of the senior players have gone on to represent England in the recent Touch World Cup, bringing home a bronze

medal. Another club that has continued to enjoy the touch seasons in Regents Park is none other than Magic Touch. Their enthusiastic and driven leader Alan Munday rallies up his troops each year and continually brings new talent into the club. This was particular notable when they attended a summer touch tournament back in 2012. Magic Touch, with two mixed teams, brought along their families and friends to support them throughout the day. There were well over 50 players, including a few mothers, children and even the pregnant wives cheering on the teams. There is another team that has since 2012, not only competed in the Clapham Common spring and summer leagues, but also the winter and autumn leagues that take place over the weekends during the colder months. More recently they have

played in the Clapham Common April Shoot-out league. Helen Saints needs a special mention, as despite all their dedication and enthusiasm, the gold medals and winners trophy has always eluded them. This all changed with the 2015 Spring League when they took the honours and won the Mixed A Division. Well Done to Stephen Coleman and the players of Helen’s Saints who have put in 100% each year and shown what dedication can produce. Although there are many more teams and clubs out there participating in the In2Touch leagues each year, there is not enough space here to give thanks to each of these teams, but we here at In2Touch would like to thank them all for bringing a fantastic atmosphere to the fields every year and continuously spreading the word of this amazing game we all love to play.

position wanted: Legal Adviser Legal Adviser, Litigation £48,000 - £57,600 Two-year fixed term contract London You can cram a lot into two years in London. We’ll leave it to you to decide how to spend your spare time here (rest assured you won’t be short of options). But if you want an opportunity to develop your professional experience and credentials in a world-leading competition authority this could be the opportunity of a lifetime. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) works to promote competition for the benefit of consumers, both within and outside the UK. We came into being in

April 2014 taking over many of the functions of the Competition Commission and the Office of Fair Trading. Our aim is to make markets work well for consumers, businesses and the economy. We have a number of opportunities for litigation specialists to be part of our civil litigation team. These roles will suit individuals who are excited by the chance to take on responsibility and develop their skills in a hands-on environment. You’ll get involved in high profile cases, and you can expect a high proportion of these to go to trial. We want to hear from candidates with solid expertise in litigation and practical experience in a High Court (or equivalent) setting. You should be a fully qualified lawyer and if not

already entitled to practice in England or Wales, you should be willing to undertake the QLTT on appointment (funding support may be available). In addition to a competitive salary the CMA also offers generous other benefits like an excellent Civil Service pension scheme, 31 and a half days annual leave, favourable consideration of flexible working options as well as generous maternity/paternity leave provision in excess of statutory requirements. To find out more about these opportunities and about working for the CMA, please go to: www.cmajobs.co.uk Closing date for applications: 5th July 2015. We are an equal opportunities employer.

Eight uncapped players selected for extended Springbok squad

by sARU The selection of eight uncapped players and the return of a further six are the features of the Springbok squad named on Saturday for the five matches leading up to the Rugby World Cup later this season In addition to the 36 squad

members, the national selectors have identified 13 players who are currently injured or will be in rehabilitation, but will form part of an extended squad for the matches against the World XV, Castle Lager Rugby Championship and the Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires. The uncapped players in the squad

are Scarra Ntubeni, Steven Kitshoff, Vincent Koch, Rudy Paige, Faf de Klerk, Jesse Kriel, Franco Mostert and Lionel Mapoe. Back in the Springbok fold after not featuring in any Springbok Tests last year, are Elton Jantjies, Frans Steyn, Jaque Fourie, Heinrich Brüssow, Pieter-Steph du Toit and

Heinke van der Merwe. “The next five matches, before we finalise the squad for the Rugby World Cup, will be very important as we want to ensure the right 31 players are on the plane to England on September 11," said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. “We have done a lot of planning

and research and are well-prepared for the season. We’ll use the matches against the World XV, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina to fine tune where necessary, but the next two months also provide the players with an opportunity to put themselves in contention to make the World Cup squad.”
