....continued from page long jumper Khotso Mokoena, football player Amanda Dlamini, swimmers Cameron van der Burgh and Chad Ho, and Paralympics stars including track legend Oscar Pistorius, swimmer Natalie du Toit and javelin thrower Zanele Situ, along with wheelchair basketballer Marius Papenfus. “It’s vitally important that our athletes feel not only comfortable in their kit but also extremely proud and honoured whenever they wear it, be it in competition or out of competition,” says Sascoc Chief Executive Officer, Tubby Reddy. “The mere pride and feelgood factor of the wearing of the national kit should serve to up their performance by a few levels.” The kits were manufactured by Chinese company Erke. This includes the tracksuits, formal suits, sandals, towels, suitcases and more. “I’m confident that our kit manufacturing company Erke have come up with cutting edge apparel for our men and women in London," said Reddy. Sascoc President Gideon Sam said, “I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, our athletes are central to everything we do. Without them there would be nothing so it’s only obvious that we want them to love what they’ll be wearing. It stands to reason that if they’re happy with the outfits and proud to be wearing them, it will allow them to focus on what they’re there for. And that’s giving their all for their country and hopefully also winning medals for us.” What do you think of the new kit? Comment on www. thesouthafrican.com/news

Letter to the Editor I write with regard to the item on last week’s comments page, On “Video: Right –wing Afrikaner camp prepares teens for war” (3 April - 9 April). There is good and bad in any nation and culture, but The South African has once again found a way to discredit the Afrikaner by focusing on the group’s “bad apples” and then link it with the word “Afrikaner”. The South African community in London is probably a 50/50 mix of Afrikaners and English-speaking South Africans, but shockingly only one page is dedicated to Afrikaans. Obviously The South African is not our paper. How could it be if it finds ways to harm our image abroad? I was recently associated with a London company, and sadly I was forced to complain about rather disrespectful comments made against Afrikaners by some of its staff here. Despite the fact that I have reported this to their head office in South Africa, no one even bothered to reply. So obviously this is the South African way of doing business here in the UK. Please stop this vendetta against us because singling us out the way you did may indirectly amount to discrimination and defamation against us and surely that is prohibited in South Africa’s constitution, not that it matters, because your paper operates in the UK, under UK law. - Edward Roos

On “Did South African police botch Dewani case?” Mwana Jojo: I also don’t think he killed this woman. After watching the program it seems as though the driver and his friend decided to rob this couple, not knowing that the two hitmen will try and rape this woman. For the police to let go of the main person who set up the meeting with the killers and the driver, I have little faith in our corrupt forces. Dominic Smith: The police investigation has not been done properly. As Jeremy Vine says in the programme, it would have been a massive risk for Shrien Dewani to ask a complete stranger, within minutes of meeting, to kill his wife! What if Zola Tongo had called the police? I would have if someone asked me that in the street! W: The average British member of public has no clue what goes on in this country, where corruption and murder are commonplace. You also can’t compare police procedure between the UK and SA. It is vastly different – and many would say illogical. Presented with a complete box full of evidence, the police will not necessarily solve a case.

C A T ’ S

Pierre: Then why did he surreptitiously pay the taxi driver money in an envelope afterwards? What about the SMS messages telling the driver where to find the envelope with the first instalment? JL: Dewani is innocent. There is so much police violence and corruption. I don’t think he can get a fair trial. He will not be extradited because the last court, the European Court of Human Rights, will ultimately block his extradition. This case may drag on for years. The British government will be exposed for their rushed and poorly thought extradition laws and the South African government will be exposed as liars and cheats. Anna: Maybe the money behind the seat was to pay for the taxi rides and tour? Jillian: Who knows anymore? The police messed it up badly and some of the facts are ambiguous. Helen Gill: I watched Panorama and was shocked at how biased it was towards his innocence. There is ample evidence to convict him in SA and if the UK had jurisdiction, they would convict him too. Deep1: I can’t decide if he did or didn’t, but the R1000 paid after the event may have been him giving the driver a ‘tip’ because of good service and feeling a connection to a fellow victim. Not a lot of money and definitely not enough

to hire a contract killer. There is no evidence of the money supposedly in an envelope in the taxi, but why the text message while his wife was in the car? Unless he was trying to organise a surprise for his wife (and I don’t mean her murder!) He was obviously distressed by what happened, but is it regret after reality hit or total devastation at losing his wife in traumatic circumstances and then everyone thinking he organised it? Very difficult to decide, but ultimately, he’s innocent until proven guilty! dilheart: If SAPS had any evidence such as the SMS messages, they would have published them long ago. They would not be waiting or trying to play smart cop. I just don’t understand how they allowed the culprit who knew the hitmen

Jaypal: We cannot trust our own president, the politicians, the police, however, we put all our trust in what the driver and his fellow hitmen have said. What a poor society we live in. It’s time this case is heard and solved at The Hague. KH: Let’s see if the SA government at least puts the other two in jail and using what evidence? Till then this man should not come to Cape Town.

Oppad uit het die oom stadig omgedraai en geknik, “Thank you, we’ll see you in two month’s time.”

Hands up if you have work NOW that I am over the infatuation with daffodils (they die as fast as they pop up), it is time, like the weather, to return to the real issues of life. The happy spring drug often precludes watching or reading hard news in lieu of another glass of wine on the tiny balcony to watch the lingering sun. But boom – petrol is gone at my petrol station. Mad truckers want to strike over Easter and beyond. Evil more like it, denying all those caravans and bucketcarrying toddlers access to hours of traffic in Devon and Cornwall these holidays. So intense is the panic that previously happy people turned to ‘petrol rage’ and started abusing each other – I read that one man actually grabbed the

pump out of a woman’s hand while she was filling up and had to be physically frog-marched from the petrol station. In France, striking is the national pastime. Every citizen must have participated in at least a hundred strikes during their lifetime, regardless of whether they are in the army, a nurse, a nanny or pastry chef. It is compulsory. It is a sign of being a true French patriot. You may notice that other Frenchmen are not fazed by these strikes; they wobble their jowls a little, say ‘merde’ and get on with it. No-one except the tourist really takes it seriously. The French play boules instead. And we are confused about the state of the Eurozone. Right now, in England, anyone going on strike during this recession is not playing boules – or ball. At present the level of unemployment is at its highest since the Second World War. Despite bland comments about lazy Englishmen, hundreds of graduates are battling to find any kind of employment. I feel guilty telling students the old mantra of ‘Work hard, study hard, get a degree and you will rise to a great career (not job) of your choice.’ Lot of good it seems now – today anyone with a degree may be lucky to get an internship

(just a euphemism for cheap labour). Things are so bad they may not even get the Starbucks or MacDonald’s slot as their degrees are considered too high a qualification for minimum wage. Doomed if you degree and doomed if you don’t. Rumours abound that those with only school leaver’s certificates are worse off, with some areas recording an average application rate of more than 500 for every job advertised. Redundancy is common and many in their 50s are packed off to an early pension they can neither afford nor want. Being out of work is a real confidence killer (which is why these cretins who don’t want to work – the benefit bandits – completely slay me and I wish the army would haul them all in for training). Many young, talented, educated and ambitious people are ready to work. If you want to strike, move over – others will fill your job. At least you have work; so for now, until the economy gets off her very large butt, be grateful. I know too many brilliant minds who would love to shape a better future. So can I strike for people who actually want to work? Where do I sign up? Optimistic? Absolutely. in-between status has resulted in a small housing development becoming a massively overcrowded slum. Because of this, it is one of the most fascinating, violent and self-sufficient communities in South Africa. Anton Harber’s exploration of Diepsloot begins with an honest opening: he cannot see a way in. The communities are so tightly knit, and this is not an area which encourages tourism. He begins by discovering political connections: there is a strong movement of ANC members, and local leaders must work constantly to improve their areas. Politics are reflected as the key to opening doors, and encouraging the development of facilities in the area. But it seems the populous is now growing beyond anyone’s control. After a fairly dry start, in which facts, figures and political jargon paint a bleak picture of life in the settlement, Harber can speak increasingly openly to a variety of inhabitants. And it is here that the real life of Diepsloot can be found. There are fiercely protective communities; there is upward mobility, vigilantism. When a problem occurs, residents know it is up to them alone to deal with it, whether it is the regulation of local trade or dealing with violent crime. While all this sounds incredibly dramatic, to the residents it is genuinely a way of life. Those who have since moved on from the area appreciate the new lives they have, the access to facilities and job markets. But they miss the sheer raw vitality of Diepsloot life. Overall, Harber’s wellestablished journalistic style paints a frank and sincere picture. The often emotional subject matter is no less heartfelt for its down-toearth appraisal and his mush-free approach, and there is still a hard centre of journalism. Diepsloot is available from all good booksellers or direct from Gazelle, contact melanie@ gazellebooks.co.uk.

by JONATHAN WALDHEIM MICRO Enterprise Development Organisation (MEDO) is a South African company that connects large businesses (R35 million or more turnover) with small businesses (R5 million or less turnover) which are a minimum 50% black owned. MEDO offers the small businesses improved chances of success and the large companies an improved Broad Based Black Empowerment (B-BBEE) score. The Broad Based Black Empowerment Act of 2003 is an extension of the concept of Black Empowerment, an idea introduced in South Africa following the end of apartheid. In the context of the act, “Black” refers to African, coloured and Indian people. The act aims to push businesses into having a workforce and ownership reflective of the population of SA. It is compulsory for companies with a turnover of more than R5 million to comply with the act. Failure to comply carries a punishment of a 10% company turnover fine or one year imprisonment. MEDO aims to enable prospective entrepreneurs to realise their potential through the provision of shared services such as legal counsel and bookkeeping, basic business training through its foundation programme and free access to office equipment. With initiatives such as the Silicon Cape aiming to help hi-tech start-ups, MEDO has been looking initially at non-tech entrepreneurial opportunities. Last year MEDO teamed up with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) with the purpose of creating a larger audience for SA micro-businesses to deal with and funding small ventures. UKTI is currently negotiating an agreement with NEF, where for every £1 invested by UKTI, NEF will invest £1.50 through non-financial and direct financial support. The joint initiative was launched on 3 November 2011 and was attended by His Majesty Kgosi

Sandrock explained, “On an average day we will get 100

visitors to the truck. Out of those, 25 attend our workshops at the mobile centre. Of these, 20 will apply for our foundation course and further support from MEDO. Out of these, approximately five will make it to our foundation course and 10 will be offered a one-day workshop assisting them to start their entrepreneurial endeavour. MEDO assisted me in obtaining more focus and also in developing a viable business model that allowed me to assess what I need to do to get my business to the next level. I am now using this model to further align my business for growth. MEDO and UKTI have a joint initiative, have they helped you with international business in any way?

What are your aims for the year ahead? I am hoping to increase my exports significantly into markets such as the UK. It seems that your business has grown rapidly since inception, did you expect such rapid growth and have MEDO assisted you in anyway? MEDO has assisted me in bringing more focus to my business and also allowed me to explore new ideas that would lead to rapid growth in the long run.

but don’t just blast your audience with spam, try to engage them with great content. Focus on sharing great stuff and the odd offer and follow the leaders in your industry. If you’re blogging, share the posts – it will win some hearts and minds with news or tips about your industry. Broadcast via YouTube YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and Cisco have predicted 90% of all Internet traffic by 2013 will be video! So go grab your YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ create_account. You don’t have to put your face on video, just use YouTube’s free automatic video creation tools to bring visitors to your videos. A great trick is to make sure you add your website like this www. yourwebsite.com to your video description on the first line to get a clickable link back to your website to bring more visitors.

Q&A Niel Martin is a South African who has worked all over the world. His latest business is his first venture into an internet business, selling products to be shipped all over the world via his website. Here, Niel gets his questions answered by Phill Turner. When my website goes live, how and where do I market it cleverly? What do I need to do? A system used currently by many businesses is the “youtwitface” system (Youtube, Twitter and Facebook). All you need to do is create content and spread your word through those platforms via text, images, audio and video. Combining all three is the most powerful way of promoting your business for free. Will I get more traffic by using a branded name in my domain name? Using copyrighted names in domain names is a little

Niel Martin like playing internet Russian roulette. If the company finds your domain name is affecting their business you may receive a solicitor’s letter asking you to cease. So my suggestion is to use a similar spelling for the actual name, for example ‘fb’ rather than Facebook. What is the best way to capture e-mail addresses? Create a free giveaway that costs you nothing and will be of high value to your potential customer. If you find out your customer’s biggest problem and solve it for them with a free gift they will happily exchange their e-mail address for it.

ZAR in rough waters

by STAFF REPORTER THE South African Rand had a tumultuous week leading up to Easter weekend, with a flurry of economic releases causing volatility and a few wide smiles among expats. Surprisingly, it was not news from the Eurozone last week that shook things up, it was mainly attributed to data released from the United States. The Federal Reserve released minutes on 4 April from their meeting that showed monetary easing may no longer be on the cards. The

statement was more aggressive than originally expected from the global powerhouse, and gave the Dollar the upper hand. Analyses of emerging market currencies have shown that they tend to perform well under the threat of quantitative easing, and vice versa. This could be a possible reason for the ZAR’s sudden drop to 12.438 against the British Pound and 7.837 to the USD. Local SA banks expect a period of volatility in the currency markets. The week ahead will be focussed around the US non-farm payroll

data being released on Friday, which will most likely cause a stir in the markets upon their opening after the long weekend. In Europe, it seems Spain is the next on the slippery slope, with debt expected to reach levels last seen in 1990. Markit’s Eurozone Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index showed a decline during February. The manufacturing sector fared no better, with its’ eighth straight month in contraction. All in all, reports indicate an interesting week ahead! Compiled by Jesse Crooks

Note: The above exchange rates are based on “interbank” rates. If you want to transfer money to South Africa then please register/login or call us for a live dealing rate. Q

: I am currently working in the UK on a Tier 2 permit and confused about the new rule changes on the pay threshold for settlement that will come into effect. Can you please give me a summary of the rule changes and how they will affect me? : The UK Home Office has announced new settlement pay threshold rules that will apply to migrants who entered or switched into Tier 2 of the Points-

The new rules for Tier 2 migrants that will come into force on 6 April 2012 are: • Tier 2 migrants must be paid at least £35,000 per annum or the going rate for the relevant occupation, whichever is the

higher, in order to apply for settlement. • Migrants doing jobs which are on the shortage occupation list will be exempted from the pay threshold rules, but still need to be paid the appropriate rate for their occupation. • “PhD-level’ jobs and Ministers of Religion will be exempted from the pay threshold rule, but will have to be paid the appropriate rate for the occupation.

The infamous 10 km Mazeno Ridge includes eight 7,000m peaks, and has never been climbed in its entirety.

So much has been written about your first Everest expedition. What is the moment that remains in your memory? One moment I recall was standing on the south summit. It’s the first time you can see the infamous ‘Knife Edge Ridge’ and the last obstacle between you and the true summit of Everest. I thought I was only on the expedition to see how far I could go, but at that moment I stood there and thought: “I can do this. I can summit Everest.” What have you had to overcome internally to find success? In bo mountaineering and as an inspirational speaker, I’ve had to overcome that feeling of ‘I can’t do that.’ What was so interesting to realise, is that really successful people are just people; capable, confident and ambitious, but also insecure, self doubting and shy. It’s about acknowledging the one and getting on with the other.

What processes do you use to move beyond the ‘I can’t go on’ moments? In those moments I find it’s important to be able to articulate the big picture of why you’re doing it. For example, people end up on Everest because they think it will sound sexy on their CVs, but don’t enjoy the process when they are there. I don’t believe in ‘summit at all costs’, and ‘winners never quit.’ The people who never quit are the people who get themselves killed. However, even the most exciting thing in the world has appallingly boring parts. So a certain level of self-discipline is needed to say ‘if this was easy, it wouldn’t be that interesting.’ Looking at your Mazeno Ridge climb, why on earth would you do a trip that is so hard? Because the Mazeno Ridge has never been climbed in its entirety. It’s much more difficult if you can’t follow in people’s footsteps. For instance to go on an Everest expedition, you just hire a guide, do what you’re told and put one foot in front of another. We’ll probably fail; some very good people have failed. What are the physical challenges you will face? Cold clearly is a major challenge. Our ridge includes technical climbing at 7,000m, it’s very hard to use your fingers without risking frostbite. One of the constraints of the Mazeno Ridge is that it’s a long

way and if you get trapped in a storm, you have to sit there eating through your supplies, not knowing when you can move again, or what the conditions will be when you move. It’s very difficult to predict. All you can rely on is yourself and your teammates. What happens behind the scenes to get a trip like Mazeno Ridge going? There are a couple of areas. Paying for it is a reasonably big one; going out there and organising sponsorship. We still have some sponsor slots available for the Mazeno Ridge expedition. Then there’s the logistical preparation, which includes getting all the permits and shifting the equipment across to Pakistan. How will you communicate with the outside world? It’s going to be via blogging and tweeting basically, (www. mazenoridge.com) Tweeting is the minimum, as it’s simply a text message by satellite phone. But I’m trying to put something together that will let us do more than that, which will allow us to publish the blog live, with

Stephan Pretorius

Director at Mazars Actuaries & Consultants

photos and text, which will benefit my sponsors. How many inspirational talks do you do a year? It’s dropped since the recession; the events industry has been hit quite hard. At the moment it is about 30 in a year. Where do you live? I live in Andorra, so I have the Pyrenees Mountains. I like it because I grew up in Jo’burg and like the sunshine, but the mountains are high enough so there’s also beautiful snow to ski on. We’ve got world-class rock

climbing and the whole lifestyle is fairly South African: slightly disorganised, very laid back - I enjoy it. And for the future? I’ve teamed up with a mixed group of women and we’re putting together a trip that will run through December, January and February. We’re going to cross the Patagonian ice cap on skis, then row up the coast of Chile and climb the highest mountain in South America, Aconcagua. Watch this space. www.thesouthafrican.com/business

What do you do in your job? Sales, Marketing and Advertising: Leveraging the Internet to generate leads and gain clients, mostly via social media platforms. Product Research and Development: I evaluate new research with valid scientific findings within fitness, exercise, psychology, nutrition and supplementation. Psychological Evaluation of Clients: This is how I determine what their limiting beliefs are, why they are in the situation they’re in and what stage of change they’re in. Nutritional Evaluation: Clients tell me what their eating and drinking habits are and I determine their level of nutritional knowledge. Most exciting thing about your job? I’m always excited to meet new clients knowing that I’m about to change someone’s life for the better in more ways than they could ever have imagined. Sharing their enthusiasm as the pounds drop off and the compliments start rolling in! Tell us an interesting story related to your job.

I had a client who had a rare genetic degenerative bone disease. I’d see her coming in, wearing her foot and back brace, her morphine pouch attached discreetly in her lower abdominal area, with the biggest smile on her face, eager for her session. Her positive attitude and determination was an inspiration to me. She made me less tolerant to my able-bodied lazy clients and more grateful for my fully functional body. Do you think being South African helps you in your job? Being South African is a breath of fresh air for most people in London. We are definitely loved, well known for our work ethic, sincerity and hardworking nature. That, my aura and my South African accent put me in good stead. What inspires you? Life is truly the sum of all your choices and I have chosen to live an extraordinary life where I don’t wake up to a job but to achieving my dreams. When days are dark, I remind myself that as long as my determination for success is strong enough, failure will never overcome me.

by NICOLE HOLGATE Shakespeare’s Birthday, 21 –22 April On the 448th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, StratfordUpon-Avon celebrates its favourite son with a day of Elizabethan fun and frolics. On Saturday, the Grand Procession will sweep through the town’s lovely streets to end by laying flowers on Will’s grave. Then the real fun begins, with costumed players, bands, and creative groups along the banks of the river Avon. You can sit back and relax to the sounds of Shakespeare’s Sonnets spoken by Royal Shakespeare Company actors as you enjoy a trip across the river. There are also demonstrations for the kids: learn about the use of stage make-up in Blood, Guts and Gore, or how to

pull a punch in a Stage Fighting demonstration. www.shakespearesbirthday.org.uk Brighton Fringe Festival, 5 – 27 May As the website proudly proclaims, there are 675 performances at 193 venues over three weeks. So, lots to choose from. Whether you’re a fan of cabaret, burlesque, opera, comedy, boy-lesque, sculpture, banjos, improv, or any other facet of the arts, you can’t really complain about a lack of variety. There are also numerous free performances and outdoor events across the city. This year’s festival is sponsored by Hendrick’s Gin, and Boho Gelato, a local ice cream parlour. What more do you want than to sit by the Pavilion, enjoying a show, with a cool drink and a delicious ice cream? brightonfringe.org

GoldCoast OceanFest, 15 – 17 June If the frigid British sea scares you, this has much, much more going for it than an icy dip. Croyde Bay in North Devon hosts music, sporting events and demos, and all the nightlife you can shake a surfboard at. Not only will acoustic hero Newton Faulkner be headlining Friday night, but there is competitive beach volleyball and soccer, surfing, BMX and skating demos, ultimate Frisbee, and the Big Boy Paddle Race (goodness knows). A great mix of hectic sporting fun and chilled-out music, with activities to get the kids in the water as well. goldcoastoceanfest.co.uk Summer Solstice at Stonehenge, 20 June The annual camping and food festival at Stonehenge gives you ample time to release your inner hippie. Held over the four days leading up to the solstice on Wednesday 20 June, in which tourists are actually allowed to enter the Stonehenge site (normally fenced off to preserve the area), there promises to be a full gamut of fire-breathers, jugglers, druids and other appreciators of ancient stone edifices. There is access to a communal campfire, ablution facilities and a few pubs nearby as well. If camping doesn’t appeal to you, you can simply visit the site from 8pm on the evening, but be warned, it does get busy, with 20,000 visitors expected. www.stonehenge.co.uk Henley Royal Regatta, 27 June – 1 July Have a truly elegant day out along this beautiful stretch of the Thames at the Henley Royal Regatta. Zimbabwe Community

Zimbabwe now part of world’s largest conservation area The Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, or Kaza TFCA, is centred around the Caprivi-Chobe-Victoria Falls area and spans 109 million acres across 36 nature reserves in Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe byJENNIFER MUNRO IF elephants never forget, here is some good news they should remember for a long time. Government ministers of Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana came together in March 2012 to form the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (Kaza). The new area spans 109 million acres and combines 36 individual

nature reserves where the five countries borders meet. It is the size of a country like Italy. Kaza contains the famous Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls on Earth, as well as the Okavango Delta in Botswana, a unique wetlands area that is home to lions, leopards, hyenas, African wild dog, rhinoceroses, baboons, crocodiles, and many others. According to the World Wildlife

Fund, 44 percent of Africa’s remaining elephants live in this area. By removing fences, creating safe corridors, and by offering income opportunities through tourism and other activities to local communities, Kaza will protect the future of the elephants. A major objective of the project is to reduce the impact elephants have on the environment, by giving them back

the space they need to migrate when a habitat’s limitations demand it. Hopefully culling will become a thing of the past. This wonderful news comes in the same month as the devastating

news from Cameroon that half of the elephant population there were slaughtered by poachers, enabling mega-wealthy Chinese business people to make money out of ivory trinkets.

Zim women in the running for London award

by STAFF REPORTER TWO UK-based Zimbabwean women have been shortlisted for Women4Africa awards recognising their work campaigning for girls’ rights. Betty Makoni has been nominated in two categories: Inspirational Woman of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year, while Bekezela Nsingo, who founded the African Mothers Foundation, has been nominated for a recognition award. Women4Africa is a UK-based organisation that helps street children and girls in Africa. Its awards honour and celebrate the work of dedicated African women making a difference in their communities. Makoni and her organisation,

the Girl Child Network, have won many awards for helping girls in rural areas take control of their lives and break the cycle of the poverty trap they are born into. But she said each award is special because it raises more awareness about the plight of such children. She grew up in similar circumstances and survived domestic abuse and rape as a child. Through sheer determination she became a teacher after gaining two bachelor degrees. Her organisation now assists girls in Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, USA and the UK. Nsingo, who has also been nominated for a Zimbabwe Achievers Award, was inspired to start her foundation after a 2008 trip home, when she was shocked

by the dire situation she found in her village. African Mothers Foundation aims to help Zimbabwean girls in rural areas become self-sufficient, and keeps them in school by paying their school fees. Girls are taught how to make re-useable sanitary towels with materials available to them, because it is very difficult for them to access these things. A third Zimbabwean, singer/ songwriter Roucheon Iloyi, has been nominated for Women4Africa awards for Outstanding Mother of the Year and Businesswoman of the Year. The Women4Africa awards ceremony will be held on Saturday 19 May at the Great Hall, Kensington Town Hall, Hornton Street, London W8 7NX. Get tickets on www.women4africa.com

TEAM SA @ THE Graeme Moore Swimming LONDON OLYMPICS

By JONATHAN WALDHEIM AS the 2012 Olympics in London draw ever closer, the excitement around Team South Africa is growing. I caught up with swimmer Graeme Moore, who has recently qualified for the Games, to discuss his aspirations for the coming year. The 23-year-old hails from Johannesburg and has been studying Integrative Biology at the University of California at Berkley and has been swimming for the California Golden Bears team during his time there. So Graeme, what are your main goals for this year? I wouldn’t say I have set goals but just to do what I do best everyday – swim fast and have fun doing it! Are you looking forward to coming to London?

Absolutely. This is my first Olympics and I couldn’t be more excited, I’ve been looking forward to this for as long as I can remember. You train and study in California, what do you miss most about home? California is actually not a far cry from South Africa – the people are awesome and the weather is very similar to what I was used to back home, but probably my friends and family, thunderstorms and braais. BBQs just don’t compare! Do you have any pre-race rituals? I suppose I do! I normally have a plan days in advance of what I’m going to do on race day. From the time I’m going to wake up and what I’m having for breakfast to what I’m going to do once

I get to the pool and back-up plans for each scenario. I’m quite meticulous! Do you think that Team SA will improve its one-medal tally from Beijing 2008? I’m positive we will. In 2008 we mostly had a relatively young and inexperienced team. This year we have young blood with more experience and a large amount of talent. It’s a promising combination. Who is your biggest inspiration? I draw inspiration day-to-day from training with my teammates. Each of us contributes a different dynamic to the group. We all find new ways to improve and constantly share these with each other, which keeps things fun and exciting. One of the main reasons why I love what I do.

The Olympic Flame is coming to you by STAFF REPORTER THE Olympic Torch Relay will start at Land’s End on 19 May, carrying the Flame to within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK, the including Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. An average of 115 people a day will carry the Olympic torch over its 8,000 mile journey to the Olympic Stadium on 27 July. The Flame with travel through more than a thousand communities and visit landmarks such as the Eden Project, West Midlands Safari Park, Blackpool Tower, Dover Castle and Kew Gardens. The methods of transport include boat, hot air balloon, motorbike and horseback. There will be celebrations across London while the torch is being carried through the city from 21 to

27 July, including Wandsworth on 23 July. The arrival of the Olympic torch in London will signify the Olympic Games are about to begin, and you’ll have the chance to join the excitement when it passes through your borough. It’s quite likely the procession will pass right by your house or office! On 27 July, just before the opening ceremony, the torch will travel eastwards down the Thames on a boat – so grab a spot along the river if you want to watch it sail past! The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog) has listed the 7,000+ people who will carry the Olympic Flame in their local area over its 70 day trip. Locog chairman Sebastian Coe said, “We hope local communities

come out and line the streets to cheer on the Torchbearers, and celebrate the Olympic Games coming to the UK.” The torchbearers were picked through the Locog’s ‘Moment to Shine’ campaign, encouraging members of the public to nominate someone inspirational to carry the Olympic Flame. The flame will also travel through Dublin in Ireland, but the list of torch bearers will be announced later this month. To see how close the torch comes to you, and when your local celebrations are, visit the Olympic Torch site at: www.london2012. com/olympictorchrelay Are you carrying the Olympic Torch through your area, or know someone who is? Assistants please?

IS it just me or is anyone else getting slightly nervous that new(ish) Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has yet to appoint any assistants to his management staff? We are exactly two months (61 days for the uninitiated) away from the first test against England in Durban on 9 June. Perhaps this is no fault of his own, but either way, it is essentially his first major hurdle of the job and he has come unstuck before a game has even kicked off. Last week, Saru unveiled De Jongh Borchardt as the new Springbok team media manager, taking over from Andy Colquhoun (who held the post on a short-term basis). Borchardt had previously held the position of Digital and Publications Manager in Saru’s Corporate Affairs department and

SOUTH AFRICA HEADS FOR LONDON SEVENS See a future Olympic sport at Twickenham on 12 and 13 May

T

by STAFF REPORTER he world’s best men and women’s rugby sevens talent will be on show at Twickenham Stadium in the Marriott London Sevens on 12 and 13 May. This year thousands of fans in flowing flares and groovy afros will embrace the 1970s disco theme, while enjoying the fast, expansive rugby at one of the top events in the London social calendar. Last year’s festival of rugby saw a world record 100,000 fans head through the gates over the two days. With 35,000 tickets already sold, the 2012 event is on course to be even bigger and better. The HSBC Sevens World Series pits the top international sevens teams against each other across nine different tournaments, every nation scoring points based on their finishing position in each competition. For the first time the London leg will be the final event and the one that will see the HSBC Sevens World Series champions crowned. After the recent conclusion of the famous Hong Kong Sevens tournament, the teams head to Japan and Scotland before the London finale. Only five points separate current leaders New

Zealand from second placed Fiji while England remain in contention in fourth place. With teams from Argentina, Australia, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Wales, USA and Zimbabwe bringing a feast of fast, flowing rugby to Twickenham’s hallowed turf, England fans will be hoping for a repeat of 2009 when England lifted the London Sevens trophy. And for the first time ever in London, the IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup tournament will run alongside the men’s tournament giving fans the chance to watch the world’s best Women’s players. 12 of the best international women’s sevens team will compete over the two-day tournament, including hosts England, who recently reached the final of the Women’s Challenge Cup in Dubai beating world champions Australia on their way to the final. The teams competing in London will be: England, Australia, Canada, USA, Netherlands, Russia, Brazil, China, Kazakhstan, France, South Africa and Portugal. Rugby sevens makes its debut at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, so the Marriott London Sevens is the perfect opportunity to see a future
