APPLE ASSIST POLICE IN PISTORIUS CASE Oscar Pistorius forgets code to unlock phone considered vital evidence in murder case
by STAFF REPORTER
SOUTH African police have been forced to seek help from US mobile phone manufacturer Apple to gain access to murder accused Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s phone, according to The UK’s Mail on Sunday. Pistorius has allegedly “forgotten” the four-digit pin needed to unlock the iPhone 5 he was using on the night his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead in his house. The phone, believed to contain vital evidence in the case, was found along with another iPhone and two BlackBerrys on the bathroom floor of his Pretoria home after the shooting on Valentine’s Day. Text messages, together with a ballistics examination of the toilet cubicle and door, are believed to be the two pivotal elements of the prosecution’s case. The Mail claims that prosecutors believe text messages on the sprinter’s phone will prove the couple were having an argument on the night of the shooting. Lieutenant General Vineshkumar Moonoo, who was leading the investigation, told the newspaper, “Pistorius is saying he can’t remember the code and we have been unable to access messages sent or received that night. These could be crucial and Apple executives in America have made their technicians available to help us. “I cannot say Pistorius’s memory failure is suspicious but the mobile phones were clearly in use up to the time of the killing.” Pistorius was released on bail of R1 million in March.

Pistorius‘s trial has been postponed until 19 August 2013, what would have been Steenkamp’s 30th birthday, at the request of both the defence and prosecution, for more time to prepare their case. Public interest in the case has been sustained at a high level internationally by a series of sensational developments unrelated to the night of Steenkamp’s death. In the immediate aftermath of Ms Steenkamp’s death, South Africa’s judicial system was embarassed by several elementary missteps on the part of the prosecution, culminating in the devastating admission that
detective Hilton Botha, acting for the state, was then facing a charge of attempted murder. Ongoing queries about the reliability of evidence have been another characteristic of the Pistorius trial after the defence were repeatedly denied access to the crime scene, Pistorius’s luxury Pretoria home. Early June saw fresh doubt emerge around the integrity of the crime scene after neverbefore-seen photos of Pistorius’s blood-stained bathroom, where Steenkamp spent her last moments, were published by Sky News.

Durban street children turned surfers hit UK beaches this summer The Umthombo Surfing Programme was created in 2005 to provide street children with an alternative to street life, build their selfconfidence and give them fresh motivation to end their dependency on solvents
by SHANNON CLARK
A surfing team made up of former street children from Durban, South Africa, will be touring the UK over the next two weeks, hitting beaches and other venues across England and Wales between Friday 21 June and Wednesday 9 July. The team learnt to surf with Umthombo Street Children, a partner project of the Amos Trust which works in several countries to promote human rights. The Umthombo Surfing Programme was created in 2005 to provide street children with an alternative to street life, to build their self-confidence and self-esteem, and give them fresh motivation to end their dependency on solvents and to give Umthombo’s social workers a new way to help reintegrate these children back into homes and mainstream society. As the first black surf team in Durban, they have already had success in local competitions and individuals have gained sponsorship from both local and international surf companies. The team have come together not just to surf competitively, but to shatter perceptions of street children. Now as an adult team they are trying to provide an outlet for all street children and by using surfing as a tool they are aiming to show the world that these children still have potential to succeed. Some of the lead surfers from the team, along with Umthombo founder Tom Hewitt MBE, will be participating in the tour, which will start and end in London with two receptions. In between these events the surfers will compete in Cornwall, Devon and South Wales. In addition they will visit local schools and the riders have committed to trying to surf the annual tidal phenomenon on the river Severn; the Severn Bore. Surfers Not Street Children also hopes to expand its impact into two new African countries. Hewitt said that during the past 21 years he has worked with street
children, it “became clear that fusing high intensity activities with psychosocial support was critical in giving these children an alternative path to the dangers and addictions of street life.” The children themselves have stated that being a part of the team really has changed their lives. “When I surf I feel like I am flying. I am far above street life” is how Khotso, aged 15, a former street child whom is now a part of Umthombo, described the project. Another former street child commented that “The Umthombo Surf Programme changed my life, I was doing glue. I was doing bad things, but now my eyes are open and I can see a new way to be.” The project has gained so much support that even Paul Canning, the former World Tour Pro Surfer and Manager of O’Neill, Africa, has said, “It’s great to see the awesome work Umthombo have done in getting the kids off the streets and introducing them to the ocean and a clean and healthy lifestyle. I believe that through the positive guidance of Umthombo it is just a matter of time until we see one of these young guys make it to the top of the international surfing world.” The Tour: Fri 21 – Sun 23 June - Gold Coast Ocean Fest, Croyde, North Devon. Sun 23 June, 11am, Service at St George’s Church, Georgeham, North Devon; Mon 24 June, pm – Event in Bristol; Tue 25 June, 8am - The Severn Bore; Fri 28 June, pm - Family Barbecue – ChristChurch Virginia Water; Sun 30 June, am - Churches Together in Swansea service; Mon 1 July, pm – Event in Mumbles, S.Wales; Wed 3 July - Surfers Against Sewage Beach Clean, Redruth, Cornwall Thurs 4 July – Surfing with UK pro surfers, Fistral Beach Sun 7 July, 10am - Tube Station, Church and Surf, Polzeath Tue 9 July, pm - Evening fundraising reception on HMS President, London To find out more visit www.amostrust.org
Shhhh… Multi-million rand Nkandla upgrade declared top secret
Not even Auditor General Terence Nombembe and Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will be able to see the long-awaited report on Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla upgrade by SHANNON CLARK
THE report that many have been waiting for, containing details on President Jacob Zuma’s multimillion rand upgrade on his Nkandla residence, has now been declared a top secret document. Thulas Nxesi, the Public Works Minister, announced earlier on this week that as the State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele had confirmed the presidential task team’s report in terms of the Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS), it would not be made available to the public. Zuma is accused of using more than R200 million of taxpayers’ money for renovations at his KwaZulu-Natal homestead. Many people have been awaiting the release of the report for close to three months. National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu is said to be among those waiting for Nxesi to publicise the Nkandla report. It had been believed that the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence would be dealing with aspects of the upgrade such as changes related to the security but that other parts including the construction, over-charging and fraud would be referred to other committees. However this has not been the case and this high security decision will mean that even the Auditor General Terence Nombembe and the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will be unable to see the report. It is currently being argued that as MISS was never actually passed through Parliament and was only created by the Cabinet that it cannot be classed as a
legally-binding agreement. Many ministers are now fighting to have the upgrade details publicised. DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko told the Cape Times that the DA would table a motion in the Joint Standing Committee of Intelligence in the hope that the report would be sent back to Nxesi. Following this act the minister
must then “submit to Parliament a redacted report, which must be made public before the relevant, open portfolio committees.” Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has said that he hopes the Nkandla spending details will be released to the public soon as “from a government point of view we want to know who overcharged, to what extent and how do we recover the money.”

South African artist wins £30,000 BP Portrait Award 2013 in London The prestigious first prize was won by 57-year-old Susanne Du Toit for ‘Pieter’, a powerful painting of her eldest son. She wins £30,000 and a commission worth £5,000
by STAFF REPORTER
BERKSHIRE-BASED South African artist Susanne du Toit was announced the winner of the BP Portrait Award 2013 at the National Portrait Gallery on Tuesday night. The prestigious first prize was won by 57-year-old Du Toit for Pieter, a powerful painting of her eldest son. She wins £30,000 and a commission, at the National Portrait Gallery Trustees’ discretion, worth £5,000. The sitting took place in Du Toit’s studio as part of a series of portraits of her family. The painter gave her son the freedom to find his own pose. The only condition was that his hands should feature prominently because hands are ‘essential to communicating personality’. The finished painting gives a real feeling for the 35-year-old Pieter’s personality. “I look to the body to provide as much expression as the face… the averted gaze of this portrait, which was his choice, struck me as characteristic of his reflective character, and became intensely engaging,” Du Toit said of the piece. Educated at the University of Pretoria and the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Du Toit now lives in Crowthorne, Berkshire. One of her favourite pastimes is ‘pushing paint around’, and although she has explored all mediums of art, she says painting is her favourite.

Of Katie and Kim
THIS is going to sound like a serious case of sour grapes, but humour me. Parking at Gatwick Airport yesterday, I managed to maneuver my ‘leetle’ car into one of those dark, airless parking places – only to grab for the sunglasses, in the so-called sunless summer when I beheld the vehicle next to me. Do your remember the colours of ‘Game’? The store in South Africa – well remember the pink, the nipple pink. Imagine now if you will, that colour poured over a magnificent Range Rover. The second prize of £10,000 went to Coventry-based artist and teacher John Devane, 58, for The Uncertain Time, a striking group portrait depicting his children Lucy, Laura and Louis. Du Toit’s painting can be
seen at the National Portrait Gallery from Thursday 20 June when the BP Portrait Award 2013 exhibition opens to the public at the National Portrait Gallery until 15 September. Admission is free.
Rover. It could only belong to one person. Maybe the number plate ‘KP 11 HOT’ will give it away. No? None other than Katie Price, aka Jordan, aka the woman who makes the most money in England out of having fake breasts, reality TV shows and a permanent Oros complexion. Three husbands, three and a half children by some of them and lips that make trout recoil in horror. If you have not been party to the antics of sensationalist seeking Katie, you have not been here long. I flinch but I am alone. Others are grabbing at the mobile phones to photograph the car. ‘Oh my God, it’s Katie’s car!’ ‘No way!’ Will this woman faint? ‘Oh, so yes! How hectic is this? ‘Take my picture, take my picture with the car.’ I am waiting for the tell tale puddle. Others gather; there is news after all, on a Sunday evening. Katie’s car is at the airport. Where could she be? Ibiza? Shall we wait until forever for her to appear next week? The choices, the indecision, the heart-pounding FOMO – the fear of missing out. We are doomed. Like this Kim Kardashian woman. Celebrity for being ‘nothing’. While researchers, explorers, men and women of medicine and science are trying
to save the world, these ladies are minting it with ‘nothingness’. Kim has just popped a baby, more money and perhaps, an honorary degree for …’ - contribution to vanity?’ Who knows, but I just don’t get it. Why do people quiver and quake at the sight and rantings of these individuals, always on camera, always thinking it is important to witness their tanning habits or the way they paint their nails? Why do we care if they have hair extensions or bicker with their siblings? This is a phenomenon I must seek to comprehend for it seems, these celebrities are the axis by which countries dictate our futures. They have apparently more power than any government and they are super, super rich for being the most stupid people on earth. Then again, are they really stupid, or simply tapping into the psyche of other stupid people, who follow their diet regimes to the last detail? This form of consumerism makes headlines, sells magazines and TV rights – so perhaps by feeding the monsters we are all guilty? I did not take a picture of the car, and yet I wonder, would I have been equally gullible had the big breasted, permanently tanned scary creature walked into my vision? Ugh, I hope not.

BRAAI Giveaway
Cheat Sheet Your taste buds sense six basic tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami. Work with these, rather than against them by matching your wine to a dish that will bring out its best characteristics. A high-tannin red can taste like sweet cherries when served with the right food, or just horrible with the wrong one. Don’t Be Bitter Never serve bitter food (eg asparagus) with a high-tannin wine (eg Cabernet Sauvignon). The bitterness in each will just multiply and your mouth will not thank you for it. If you want to champion a high-tannin wine, rather serve foods with fat, umami and salt.

I RECENTLY started reading a book by Jamie Ivey titled Extremely Pale Rosé: The Quest for the Palest Rosé in France. What a wonderful read, if like me you enjoy a glass or two of the pink stuff. In honour of this and the looming summer, which will hopefully show up in the not too distant future, this week’s wine column features a couple of rosés from die Moederland! There are various methods of making rosé. The most recognised method is similar to red wine production but the amount of time the wine is in contact with the skin of the grapes is shorter (12-36 hrs.) and fermented at a lower temperature (1520°C). The pink colour can range from a pale orange to a
Sweeter is Better When serving dessert, aim for a wine that is sweeter than your dish (eg Port). If the food is sweeter, the wine will taste bitter and tart. Tart is Tantalising Unless you want a bland tasting wine, select a wine with a good balance of acidity, sugar and fruit. When you’re enjoying your lemon chicken, you don’t want the taste of the wine to let you down. Our Top Picks The Savanna has a wide selection of the most delicious varietals the Wine Route has to offer. Here are our Top Five Recommendations for the summer season (tasting notes taken directly from vineyards): 1. Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block 2011 (red wine) – A blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Viognier. Tasting note: Redcurrant, plums, crushed rock, and an array of spices with floral notes adding to its complexity. 2. Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (red wine) – 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasting Note: Blackcurrant and mocha flavours with a complex palate with good acidity. vivid near-purple, depending on the grapes used and the duration of skin contact. It’s the perfect accompaniment for a last minute braai and because of its usually dry taste, it slips down wonderfully when the sun is shining at its brightest. Boschendal Rosé 2011 Stellenbosch A lovely Salmon colour that indicates loads f depth and flavor. Strawberries and raspberries on the nose with just enough acidity to accompany an afternoon in sun. Do have it with food! biltongstmarcus. co.uk
3. Warwick Professor Black Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (white wine) –100% Sauvignon Blanc. Tasting Note: Tropical fruit, gooseberry, grapefruit and lime aromas. 4. Ken Forrester The FMC 2011(white wine) –100% Chenin Blanc. Tasting Note: Rich, layered with dried apricot, vanilla and honey. 5. Percheron Grenache Rosé 2011 (rosé wine) –100% Cinsault. Nelson Mandela’s Living Legacy 1953: In search of a ‘Freedom Charter’ for the Struggle Brandpunt CONRAD BRAND
MANDELA obtained work as an attorney for the firm Terblanche and Briggish, before moving to the liberal-run Helman and Michel, passing qualification exams to become a full-fledged attorney. In August 1953, Mandela and Oliver Tambo opened their own law firm, Mandela and Tambo, operating in downtown Johannesburg. The only African law firm in the country, it was popular with aggrieved Africans, often dealing with cases of police brutality. The authorities removed the firm’s office permit under the Group Areas Act, forcing them to relocate, and their customers dwindled.
Phumia, was born in May 1954, Mandela’s relationship with Evelyn became strained, and she accused him of adultery. Evidence has emerged indicating that he was having affairs with ANC member Lillian Ngoyi and secretary Ruth Mompati; persistent but unproven claims assert that the latter bore Mandela a child. Disgusted by her son’s behaviour, Nosekeni returned to Transkei, while Evelyn embraced the Jehovah’s Witnesses and rejected Mandela’s obsession with politics. Mandela came to the opinion that the ANC “had no alternative to armed and violent resistance” after taking part in the unsuccessful protest to prevent
the demolition of the all-black Sophiatown suburb of Johannesburg in February 1955. He advised Sisulu to request weaponry from the People’s Republic of China, but while supporting the anti-apartheid struggle, China’s government believed the movement insufficiently prepared for guerilla warfare. With the involvement of the South African Indian Congress, the Coloured People’s Congress, the South African Congress of Trade Unions and the Congress of Democrats, the ANC planned a Congress of the People, calling on all South Africans to send in proposals for a post-apartheid era.

Former journalist and film and West End theatrical producer
Lives: London, with wife Sigrid Rausing Career: BBC journalist, film and theatre producer as head of Portobello Pictures and Portobello Books, founder and benefactor of The Fugard Theatre, Cape Town
by BRETT PETZER
FILM, television and theatre producer Eric Abraham is best known for producing the Academy Award and Golden Globe Awardwinning film Kolya (Best Foreign Language Film 1996). Kolya is the story of an unlikely bond between a middle-aged isolated former concert cellist and the eponymous five year-old Russian boy who temporarily comes into his care - a world perhaps distant from the London Abraham has called home since 1976. However, the fact that the film plays out against the dying moments of the Soviet system and the first sparks of the peaceful Velvet Revolution perhaps explain the uniquely personal appeal of the story for Abraham, who built his flourishing career in the top flight of arts journalism and entertainment in the UK only after assiduous persecution by the Apartheid security apparatus and his subsequent forced exile from South Africa. Arriving in London in the midSeventies after his house arrest and banning in South Africa, Abraham put his human rights background to use at the BBC, eventually becoming a producer for Panorama and BBC radio correspondent. At Panorama, he went on to produce many acclaimed television dramas including John le Carré’s A Murder of Quality starring Denholm Elliott and Glenda Jackson and the primtetime crime series Dalziel & Pascoe starring Warren Clarke, which also screened in South Africa. Turning his attention to more light-hearted fare (that still retains a serious moral message) Abraham produced Roald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World, a highly acclaimed family film with major stars
Jeremy Irons, Robbie Coltrane, Jimmy Nail and a host of other British talent. Abraham’s extensive film career went on to include a long-term collaboration with Czech auteurs such as like Jiří Menzel (The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin) and with Kolya’s Jan Svěrák (Dark Blue World and Empties, which has been the biggest Czech box office hit in history, as well as 2010’s Kooky). In English-language cinema, Abraham collaborated with Tim Roth on The War Zone, with Jez Butterworth’s on Mojo and Birthday Girl, on Nanni Moretti’s Quiet Chaos, and Joshua Marston’s The Forgiveness of Blood. In 2005, Abraham and his wife, Swedish philanthropist and anthropologist and Tetra Pak heiress Sigrid Rausing, founded Portobello Books - an investment of great artistic integrity at a time when the publishing industry in the developed world had already begun the contraction and consolidation that continues today. Later that year, Portobello acquired one of the most respected literary journals in the world, Granta, as well as its publishing arm, Granta Books. That same year also marked Abraham’s West End debut, as a producer of Hugh Whitemore’s adaptation of Pirandello’s As You Desire Me starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Bob Hoskins and directed by Jonathan Kent. Abraham built on the success of As You Desire Me to produce his first solo West End production under
Portobello’s new theatre division. Embers, based on the 1942 Hungarian novel that received critical attention when it was finally translated into English in the 2000s, was commissioned from playright Christopher Hampton, who adapted both Les Laisons dangereuses and Ian McEwan’s Atonement for the screen to great critical and commercial success; the play marked the end a twentyyear stage hiatus for Jeremy Irons, who Abraham had worked with on Danny, Champion of the World. For all his international success, South Africa remains a part of Abraham’s life and work, and in 2006, he teamed up with Mark Dornford-May (of the Berlin Golden Bear-winning U-Carmen e-Khayelitsha) to set up a series of highly successful film and theatre projects designed to bring South African storytelling and performance to an international audience. The result, two Xhosa/ English versions of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Impempe Yomlingo) and Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (Ikrismas Kherol) totally reinvented two favourites of the Western canon, premiering at Cape Town’s Baxter and then at London’s Young Vic Theatre. Impempe Yomlingo, which featured township performers alongside established black South African talents, went on to win the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival 2008. However, perhaps Abraham’s most lasting contribution to South African theatre was in his decision to establish a small (270-seat) yet world-class theatre in Cape Town that would be more receptive to new and experimental works, especially from hist-orically marginalised voices, in the tradition of Fugard’s œuvre. To this end, he underwrote and continues to support - a multi-million Rand project to convert

an old textile warehouse and National Heritage-listed Gothic church into the Fugard Theatre. According to Abraham, “South Africa’s real wealth lies in the abundance of talent to be found in its people, from sport to culture,” said Abraham. “I commissioned The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town as a gesture of faith in this country and its potential to make a significant contribution to world culture. The transformational nature of theatre is well-documented and what we have here is an internationally track-recorded South African theatre company and a world class theatre. We intend to make both one of the
main cultural landmarks of the Southern hemisphere”. These words rang true within months of the theatre’s founding when it hosted Sir Ian McKellen in Sean Mathias’ acclaimed South African production of Waiting for Godot. Eric Abraham is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and the European and Czech Film Academies. His experiences as a journalist and activist under apartheid in South Africa are documented in the radio documentary Betrayal.

Trade & Investment Mike Fannin of deVere: “South Africans need to rethink the way they retire” South Africans remain overwhelmingly invested in discretionary offshore pension funds - but financial expert Mike Fannin of deVere consulting, now returned to South Africa after years in London finance, warns of big changes ahead in the way South Africans need to plan for retirement
We’ve been screaming from the rooftops for years that there’s a pension crisis coming in South Africa. I’ve been telling South Africans for six years that their trust planning (in discretionary trusts) is not working - and discretionary offshore trusts make up the lion’s share of South African pensions. We planned for this, anticipated it, and built a solution for it two years ago. I sometimes find myself saying to prospective clients, ‘If you don’t do this with me, please do it with someone else, but please do it’.
by BRETT PETZER
MIKE Fannin, now Cape Town head of major investment consultancy deVere, is Port Elizabeth-born and raised but went on to great success in the City. He now specialises in helping South Africans manage their wealth. What makes deVere unique? In a word, size. We’re the largest offshore investment consultancy in the world. We specialise in helping British and South African expatriates to invest offshore. It’s our scale, however, that gives us access to a unique product and a unique service. Being bigger - we have around 70 000 clients worldwide - we have access to institutions that wouldn’t normally deal with investment consultancies. DeVere manages just short of short of 9 billion dollars around the world. At that scale, you don’t gamble - we just deliver a consistent return with massive levels of capital protection. In addition, most of our solutions are proprietary. We’re independent, but we have certain solutions we can offer that are unique. For example, we have been able to form strategic alliances with Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan. Goldman Sachs, moreover, have invited twenty of our top people to New York for training with them - ringing the bell at the NYSE, working out of their boardroom. These firms don’t have any other strategic alliances with other companies here. How are you positioned to help international South Africans? My speciality is the question of what happens when you live and work between the UK and SA. We come in at an angle of not only putting together investment alternatives but also advanced tax solutions which delivers real benefit for people. We try to sell investments tailored to each person’s assets, profile and goals, rather than one-size-fits-all products.
This means tailoring risk profile individually. It means listening carefully to what makes each person different. This situation changes often, and we pride ourselves on anticipating it timeously. A recent example is the way in which Guernsey took a massive knock when a change in rules saw over 300 Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes, or QROPSs, delisted]. DeVere were six months ahead of the curve in Guernsey. We had already moved our operations to Malta. What has been the most rewarding part of your job? I have been humbled to be approached by people and then help them retire when they didn’t think they could. I get to tell people, ‘You’ve done enough, you can relax now’. At the heart of our business is still pensions and retirement solutions. We have the privilege, and the responsibility, of being entrusted with the large sums of money people intend to retire on in a sense, people are trusting that you’ll be able to care of them when they’re old and sickly. Many young people don’t think they’ll ever retire. Yes, and it takes perhaps more planning, from much earlier, to retire nowadays. Prospective retirees need to become more discerning and alert to changing circumstances.
How does someone from PE end up in London finance, and then come home to head up a branch of the world’s largest offshore investment consultancy? I started at the then University of Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) with a double major in Accounting and Economics. I left for London in 1997, and worked for a year in investment banking. I then opened a tax consultancy in 1998 and sold up in 2002. In that same year, I opened up a financial advisory that by 2007 was the third-largest of its kind in London. Then came the crunch, and I spent a lot of time buying up property. My property portfolio, therefore, is my pension. We wanted to return home, though. My wife, who was ranked number 2 in the world for panEuropean equity trading, had investment experience while I had tax-structuring experience. DeVere thought that that combination was the right one to head up the Cape Town office, and here we are! Do you have a large-company culture? To be honest, deVere is a bunch of entrepreneurs. We all run a business within a business, we’re all investors in it. We have an incredibly inspirational CEO, Nigel Green. Our Africa head is also a force of nature -who is 38. I’m 40. It’s a young, nimble company.

Dual citizenship for Summer ZAR firms up, Sizzlers despite uncertainty South Africans SA Shop Directory by DAMIAN SUTHERLAND
THE Rand has remained high against major currencies with uncertainty towards the health of ex-president Nelson Mandela however local data and better than expected local data have kept the rate relatively steady with hope of improvement. The Rand was softer on trade opening this morning following the news that former president Nelson Mandela had returned to critical condition at his hospital in Pretoria. Positive domestic data sets that were published on Wednesday 19th have limited the losses on the ZAR. First quarter data also showed that the country’s current account deficit was lower than expected at 5.8% of the annual GDP. There was also an improvement in the import/ export numbers, which indicates positive revenue for South African exporters and could be a sign that the economy may be turning a corner. The economy also showed
a lower inflation rate than recorded in April with figures down from 5.9% to 5.6%, giving the Reserve Bank a little more room to try and boost the economy and slow further rate falls. The ZAR did not lose as much ground as expected against the Pound as it steadied back from 15.9563 back under 15.8000 over the weekend. GBP / ZAR: 15.6959 EUR / ZAR: 13.3839 USD / ZAR: 10.2163 (as of 10h00 GMT 24/06/2013) Note: The above exchange rates are based on “interbank” rates. WORLDWIDE TAX SOLUTIONS
Is your tax situation a mess?
by STAFF REPORTER
IT is possible for South Africans to have both South African and British citizenship. It is, however, very important to protect your South African citizenship before you lodge your British citizenship application(unless you are a minor). In order to do so, you will need to apply as such at the South African High Commission. This way your SA citizenship is protected and you are able to hold dual citizenship. If you fail to formally apply for duel citizenship permission before becoming a British Citizen, you will automatically lose your South African citizenship. It is possible to re-instate one’s South African citizenship, but may cause quite an administrative hassle. BIC therefore advises its South African clients to protect their SA citizenship, before applying
for British citizenship, which will enable them to have dual citizenship. If you are unsure or concerned that you have lost your South African citizenship, it is possible to do a determination of your SA nationality status. BIC will gladly assist you with any of the above matters. For more information, please contact our offices at info@bicimmigration.com or phone us in London on 0845 074 0514.

Luke Flemington | RAF Hercules Pilot by BRETT PETZER
LUKE Flemington, who was rejected by the South African Air Force only to fly for the Royal Air Force, won the UK’s highest military award in flying for leading low-level rescue missions into Libya; conducted under fire in his Hercules aircraft. When did you arrive here from South Africa? After Maritzburg College - where there were guys above and below my year in the services - I tried to get into the South African Air Force [in which my father and grandfather both served]. I was found eligible for training, but the political situation in 1994 meant that there were no positions available for me. I applied to other Commonwealth countries and was able to study a Bachelor of Aviation (majoring in Business Management and Aviation Psychology) at Massey University in New Zealand. That’s how I was able to go through selection for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and then, from there, into the RAF. In New Zealand I was able to study and accumulate flying hours at the same time – and along with some UNISA credit that I gained during a post-matric at Michaelhouse, I was able to graduate in just 2 years. At the time, being rejected from the SAAF was hard but in retrospect it was the best thing that ever happened to me - among my
friends who stayed, many had a tough time. On the other hand there are many South Africans in the RAF – four of which I know who also fly the Hercules. What is your rank and service? Flight lieutenant - that’s the RAF rank equivalent of a Captain in the Army. The next rank up is Squadron Leader. I have done the Junior Command Course which makes me eligible for promotion, but as I have a family now and don’t want to spend as much time away from home, I am seeking a change of career and will be leaving the RAF at the end of the year. With this type of high-level training, you are probably able to walk into a job in the private sector. Actually not. Combat training is very different. I would, in fact, have to get the same licences and pass the same tests as anyone else. However, my military flying hours do still count towards my overall experience. What is your uniform? Do you ever work without it? On a day to day basis I work in a flying suit - a green coverall with rank and badges on it. We do, however, use the MoD’s new MTP [multi-terrain pattern - an advanced new type of
Left: Luke in the Hercules cockpit; above: Hercules, the workhorse of the RAF, ‘somewhere in Afghanistan’.
camouflage that works well across different terrains] and I wear a fire-retardant version of that when flying on operations. How would you compare the British public’s attitude towards your job to that of the SA public? I remember a favourable attitude to the Air Force in South Africa before I left but that was a long time ago and I assume that it has changed a lot since I’ve been gone. Since I first arrived in the UK, however, the military has also undergone quite a transformation in the public eye. When I first started, Northern Ireland was still the main issue and the public was deeply ambivalent. Since Afghanistan, though, that attitude has changed a lot. Something that didn’t necessarily get reported at first was the number of badly-injured service personnel coming home. Charities like Help for Heroes have done excellent work in publicising this and the public attitude has changed; people now recognise the sacrifices made [whatever they may feel about the war itself]. If you could alter one thing - a law, a policy, a constraint - in order to make your job better, what would it be? The one thing I would like is for senior officers to stand by their principles and defend their personnel more. Although we’ve been through a lot of conflicts in the last decade we are not really a country at war. The leaders...aren’t the wartime leaders of the past. They aren’t able to make tough decisions regardless of the consequences. Your typical senior officer is forced to be a politician as well as a military leader and they can’t say no when they are always having to think of the next promotion. Therefore the people at the bottom keep being asked to do more and more with less. In my opinion we try and do far too much with what we have.
How does Britain, then, still manage to punch so far above its weight in the world, in military terms? Well, the quality of British military training has always attracted a high calibre of person that allows it to do far more than its budget should allow. But we are getting to a dangerous position where perks are being eroded. For example, my family would previously have gotten medical and dental cover from the specialists on the base but now they have to use the NHS. Little boys and girls will always still aspire to join, but I am not sure they will want to stay on after they have worked that itch out of their system? The military at the moment is a young person’s game because they ask so much of you. But I would still recommend it to anyone starting out. What is the biggest public misconception about your job? If I tell people I fly the Hercules [military transport aircraft], few of them know what that is, or they assume that it’s like driving a bus big, slow, safe. I fly a big aeroplane, but I do fly a lot at an extremely low level and on NVGs (Night Vision Goggles it’s a lot more complicated than just going from A to B. Afghanistan’s terrain is also what we term ‘hot and high’ - a combination that is very detrimental to aircraft performance.
Are you a first-generation serviceman? Third-generation pilot, actually. My father and grandfather flew in the SAAF and both my greatgrandfathers were in the Boer War. Have you ever indulged in uniform dating? My wife was actually my boss when we met! We were both the same rank, but she was my immediate manager for a couple of weeks before I moved on. You’re one of the most decorated South Africans in the RAF - ever. How did you come to be awarded the DFC? It was for missions flown into Libya. We had to extract foreign oil workers - both British and other nationals - and I was among those tasked to go and get them. We were unsupported and didn’t have permission to cross the border but we made it through and landed on strips deep in the desert. We had to overload the aircraft in order to get everyone out and had to fly at very low level to avoid the active air defence systems. On one approach to a landing strip, we encountered small arms fire. We took a round into one of our fuel tanks, the main gear and my co-pilot also had a chunk of helmet shot off, but he was all right and we managed to get everyone home safely.

Jobs for those who want them
The ongoing lack of available skills creates huge opportunities for those who are prepared to acquire the appropriate skills required for the financial, IT and financial sectors in South Africa. EMPLOYMENT statistics revealed by Network Recruitment indicate that the high demand for talent and skills in the financial, IT and engineering sectors is unlikely to abate and should serve as a career guide for graduates who are returning to South Africa. During 2012 over a third of all Network Finance’s placements in this sector went to qualified financial accountants and financial managers, with 50% of
all IT positions filled by developers. Analysts and administrators were also among the top IT positions. Figures showed high demand across the board in the engineering sector, with mechanical engineers, draughtsmen, sales engineers and artisans accounting for an equal share of the most sought-after skills. The ongoing lack of available skills creates huge opportunities for those who are prepared to acquire the appropriate skills required for the financial, IT and financial sectors in South Africa. During 2012 the top five categories in the engineering and
finance sectors advertised on the country’s two largest online recruitment service providers confirmed the demand. In engineering, millwrights; fitters; electricians; electrical engineers and mechanical engineers were in high demand. In finance, the top five advertised positions were for financial managers; auditors; bookkeepers; financial accountants and management accountants. The South African job market:
There’s no place like home!
Emigration is nothing new for South Africans – and now many are returning home again. THERE have been numerous reports in the last couple of years about the hordes of skilled South Africans that are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad. At one point, almost everybody you talked to either had a friend or family member in London, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Yet, it seems that times are changing: experts say many South Africans are now returning, especially as the economies of the rich world have stumbled. At Communicate Personnel we get many enquiries from expats looking for information about the job market, cost of living and outlook in South Africa. There are so many great reasons to return to South Africa (and it’s also important to realise that it’s not always perfect), but hey, don’t wait until it gets better, come home and help make it better. Here are some of the
things to consider when deciding if it’s time to come back to sunny South Africa: Cost of living: A big plus: living in South Africa can be cheaper than most parts of the United Kingdom and the world, but it’s important to be aware that the US dollar, the British pound, and the Euro won’t stretch as far as they used to. Escalating food and high fuel prices are rapidly eating into the previously reasonably priced South African lifestyle – but it’s still cheaper here. There are also the rate hikes of electricity and road taxes to consider as well as the muchcontended E-toll system in Gauteng. Transport: Some great improvements have been made, with for instance, the Gautrain, although the public transport system in South Africa is still a bit chaotic and unreliable at times. Depending on where you live and work, you

Book review: ‘We Greenpop’s Trees for Zambia Need New Names’ by - a Conference of Action NoViolet Bulawayo Join Greenpop for a learning, doing, action-based event in one of the Zimbabwean Caine prize winner NoViolet Bulawayo is back with her debut novel, a work of outstanding quality from an exceptional talent by JOSEPH NTHINI
NOVIOLET Bulawayo, whose short story ‘Hitting Budapest’ won the 2011 Caine Prize in African Writing, is back with her debut novel We Need New Names. The New York Times, Granta and Oprah’s magazine gave it rave reviews. Now, it’s our turn to experience this sensation. Darling, the first person narrator lives in a shanty town called Paradise. Her motley crew consists of Bastard, Sbho, Chipo, Godknows and Stina. Chipo is pregnant with her grandfather’s child. Darling and her friends don’t attend schools as they are all closed. The teachers fled. The children raid Budapest, an affluent area, and steal guavas to keep hunger at bay. They spend time playing old games like Andy Over and Country Game. They also create new ones like Looking for Bin Laden, or trying to get rid of Chipo’s pregnancy. However, games like the theatrical re-enactment of Bornfree’s murder leaves your spine tingling. Bornfree is a member of the Real Change party. Unbeknown to the children, a BBC crew are watching them play after his burial in Heavenway. A crew member asks them, “What kind of game were you just playing?” Bastard replies, “Can’t you see this is for real”. The harrowing events they witness are captured humanely, with humour and sensitivity. Darling is alienated from her friends. She’s whisked away to America. Her loss is tangible. The real America is different to the one she imagined while in Paradise. She makes new friends. They steal a car and watch forbidden videos. Darling introduces us to characters like the indomitable Tshaka Zulu. He performs at Zimbabwean events but he’s a patient at Shadybrook. Darling discovers people work
two jobs in America or marry for papers. She’s trapped in America; she can’t return home because she has no papers. She reflects, “We dropped our heads because we were no longer people; we were now illegals”. Darling beautifully articulates the esoteric details of forced or self-imposed exile. Bulawayo’s narrative is poetic prose. Her voice is authentic and singular. She fuses a range of poetic devices such as repetition or poetic licence inducing a hypnotic cadence. She mixes simple, complex, compound and compound-complex sentences which end with a twist. Bulawayo defamiliarises English through her blend of English, Shona, Ndebele, location [loxion] and text speak. The language is at times crude, challenging conventions, propriety, taboo and tradition. She sensitively addresses issues such as displacement, delinquent fathers, incest, political violence, stigmas like AIDS and tradition. It questions themes such as colonialism, Christianity, dictatorship, immigration, and Chinese and Western imperialism. No subject is untouched.
world’s most beautiful spots – the mighty Victoria Falls in Livingstone Zambia. This is a holiday with a difference by STAFF REPORTER
EVER wondered what a Conference of Action would be like? Greenpop’s Trees for Zambia Project calls itself just that. A learning, doing, actionbased event in one of the world’s most beautiful spots – the mighty Victoria Falls in Livingstone Zambia. This is a holiday with a difference. Zambia has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world and these climate related issues are not country specific but affect us all. In 2012 Greenpop launched Trees for Zambia, a reforestation and eco-awareness project which began with a 3-week tree planting event and was followed by an ongoing campaign to inspire awareness about deforestation, climate change, tree planting, environmental sustainability and alternative energy sources. Trees for Zambia 2013 will be the second Action Event hosted in Livingstone to boost the project and plant around 5000 trees in schools, on subsistence farms and in reforestation sites. Again Greenpop will host educational workshops for school children, subsistence farmers and volunteers. Trees for Zambia is a holistic awareness campaign based on getting people active about making sustainable changes.
Along with all the action, planting and learning goes a lot of fun too. The event includes short film evenings, soccer tournaments, live music events every week and more. Musicians from Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa play an important role in getting planters to dance and stretch after a week of planting – and they all have environmental issues at heart. From 7th to 28th July 2013, the Trees for Zambia Conference of Action will be held in Livingstone, Zambia. Greenpop invites people, young and old, to come along for 1, 2 or 3 weeks. Get Active and Dig – plant trees and make solar cookers at local
schools and in national parks Learn – Attend workshops & lectures on current environmental issues Educate – Teach children about conserving their natural environment (and learn from them too) Share – Connect with other like-minded local and international eco-travellers Explore – Experience the magic of Livingstone, Zambia – home of the majestic Victoria Falls Visit the Trees for Zambia webpage at www.greenpop.org/ projects/trees-for-zambia Visit Greenpop at greenpop.org Email: zambia@greenpop.org

SA women’s hockey clubs together in aid of coach Ahead of the Investec World Hockey League semi-final that starts this weekend, the South African women’s hockey team gave some of their valuable preparation time to hold a charity coaching clinic in London to raise money for beloved coach Greg Beling by MYAK HOMBERGER
THE measure of a person can always been seen by the comments those around them make when they are not there and more importantly by the actions of those who have been impacted by them. On 18 January 2013 hockey coach Greg Beling suffered a major heart attack whilst on training camp with the South African Women’s Hockey team. This has left him in a coma for some time now and as a result his medical cover has finally run out. A few months later the SA women’s hockey team flew 9,600km to Scotland, played four matches, climbed on a plane, flew another 500km and got straight into a waiting bus to take them to an event. This event was a charity coaching clinic in Raynes Park – not one that was organised for them but one that as a team they had decided to run to raise money for Greg. This was their only down time as they prepare to play the Investec World Hockey League semi-finals in London this weekend but they wanted to run this event for Greg. This speaks of the man and what he has contributed to the team and to hockey in general. Greg has coached since forever and is an icon of South African
hockey. His passion and energy has guided and inspired many a career and this is clearly demonstrated in the support from the players and staff at the event. More than 70 youngsters turned up for the event that was planned at short notice, to learn from the SA girls. Split into age groups they were drilled by the team in a “round robin” style of skill sessions. Every child walked off that astroturf sweaty, but with a smile on their face, photos taken, autographs given having had an excellent time. “That was awesome” said one child as she walked off with parent in toe. The team’s enthusiasm and dedication shone through and is a testament to them and Greg’s input, they could have slouched around but they gave it their all. This was about the kids and equipping the next generation but it was also about Greg and raising money for him. Springboks crush Samoa at Loftus Springboks thrash Samoa 56-23 in Castle Lager Incoming Series
by STAFF REPORTER
THE Springboks hammered Samoa 56-23 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday to ensure a clean-sweep of victories in the Castle Lager Incoming Series and the trophy. The clash started off conservatively with Bok flyhalf Morne Steyn and Samoan fullback James So’oialo kicking penalties early on which saw Samoa take a 6-3 lead in the 15th minute. But the flood gates opened soon after for the home team with veteran wing Bryan Habana scoring the first of four first-half tries thanks to a fantastic pass by Willie le Roux for 10-6 lead. Francois Louw crashed over the tryline from a rolling maul for the second try, while JJ Engelbrecht powered his way through two Samoan defenders and danced to the tryline for the third. Samoa’s only reply was a third penalty by So’oialo, to increase their tally to nine points. And unfortunately for the visitors a yellow card for Logovii Mulipola after entering a ruck from the side didn’t assist their cause. Bok left wing Bjorn Basson had the last say in the first half as he dived over the tryline in the dying minutes for the bonus point try and a handy 32-9 half time lead. Samoa, however, hit back after the break for their first try of the match by lock Teofilo Paulo to reduce the deficit to 32-16 in the 46th minute. Their efforts, however, were undone minutes later as Alesana Tuilagi was red-carded for a reckless straight-arm tackle on Bok captain Jean de Villiers, and with the team a man down, a clever pass to Habana from the back of a ruck earned the side their 5th try – and Habana his 50th – and a 37-16 lead. Morne Steyn inflicted further damage on the Samoan’s as he took advantage of an overlap on the right wing by showing a dummy pass and diving over the chalk to inflate his team’s lead to 42-16. A Bryan Habana yellow card in the 70th minute for knocking the ball down intentionally, however, opened the door for Junior Poluleuligaga to score Samoa’s second try a minute later, which

pushed the visitors’ score to 23 points. Bok flank Francois Louw struck back strongly by holding off three defenders to score his second try, and it was Bok replacement prop Trevor Nyakane who knocked the final nail into Samoa’s coffin with a last-minute try for a convincing 56-23 victory. Commenting on the victory, Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said, “We asked the forwards for a big performance and they delivered. We played typical Springbok rugby. We did the basics right and the team was strong physically, especially Willem (Alberts) and Francois (Louw), so am happy with the performance. But that said there is room for improvement, so it is important that we keep our feet on the ground.” Meyer also praised Habana for his 50th try and said, “Bryan always delivers the goods for me; I am very proud of him. He said before the game he wanted to score three tries, and although he fell short with two, it was a fantastic effort.” Scorers: Springboks – Tries: Bryan Habana (2), Francois Louw (2), JJ Engelbrecht, Bjorn Basson, Morne Steyn, Trevor Nyakane. Conversions: Morne Steyn (3), Pat Lambie (2). Penalties: Morne Steyn (2). Samoa – Tries: Teofilo Paulo, Junior Poluleuligaga. Conversions: James So’oialo, Paul Williams. Penalties: James So’oialo (3).

ERNIE ELS CLINCHES MUNICH OPEN WITH ONE-SHOT LEAD Reigning British Open champion Ernie Els led from start to finish to capture the BMW International Open in Munich
by BRAD MORGAN
SOUTH Africa’s Ernie Els became the oldest ever winner of the BMW International Open at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried in Munich, Germany on Sunday, having led the tournament from start to finish. It was a timely win for the 43-year-old legend, coming just a month ahead of his British Open title defence at Muirfield. Els’ victory was built upon a superb first round of nine-underpar 63. “That first round was the dream start for me,” he wrote on his website, “especially having come straight from a tough week in the US Open at Merion. Obviously I played some good stuff there, so my goal was to carry that form into the BMW. “Seven birdies and an eagle for a 63 was certainly a neat way of doing that. We knew it was going to be low scoring week, so if you come out of the blocks fast like that, it does somewhat take the pressure off for the rest of the tournament. It means you’re not having to play a game of catch-up all week.” Even an opening 63, however, does not guarantee a procession to the title and it was far from that for Els, who was passed by both Thomas Bjorn and Alexander Levy in the final round, but he kept his composure to sign for a third 69 on the trot and an
18-under-par total. Heading into the 18th, Els needed a birdie to win. He wrote afterwards: “It was tight right down to the wire, though, so we knew we’d probably have to make birdie on 18 to secure the win. To play that hole so well and make a secure two-putt birdie, that was obviously very satisfying. “Any time you have a tapin birdie putt to win a golf tournament, you’re a happy man!” The victory was the 68th of Els’ career and his 28th on the European Tour. Surprisingly, it was the first by a South African in the BMW International. It tied him with compatriot Louis Oosthuizen, Italy’s Matteo Manassero and England’s Ian Poulter as the only golfers to have won European Tour titles in each of the past four years. The win, worth €333 330 (approximately R4.46-million), also secured a place for Els in the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the 2013 WGCHSBC Champions and the 2014 Volvo Golf Champions. Fellow South African Darren Fichardt enjoyed a strong showing, finishing in a tie for seventh with Sergio Garcia and Wen-yi Huang on 14-under-par 274. There was further excitement for South African golf fans when,

He finished on 275 after rounds of 66, 71, 67 and 71. “What an awesome week it was! T10 finish on debut is a dream come true!” he wrote on Twitter afterwards.
