LEGAL COLD SHOULDER FOR THOSE RETURNING TO SA

|The Medical Schemes Act has a formula by which returning South Africans must, for the remainder of their lives, pay punitive premiums of between 5% and 75% to a medial aid because they did not belong to South African medical aid schemes while out of the country by RHYNIE GREEFF

PRETORIA has seen fit to broadcast a message loud and clear to all returning South Africans: ‘Keep out, or you will be heavily fined for having lived abroad’. Repatriates who choose to settle in Mzansi after time overseas now face a sober awakening no sooner than they have unbuckled their plane seatbelts: a rather surreal law, the Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998, which will effectively penalise them for the rest of their lives for having emigrated or lived outside South Africa. This law has an upside in that it protects current members of South African medical aids from late joiners – those who only start paying for medical aid cover once they are already sick – by levying heavy fees on the latter. Now for the downside: the Medical Schemes Act has a formula by which returning South Africans must, for the remainder of their lives, pay punitive premiums of between 5% and 75% to a medial aid because they did not belong to South African medical aid schemes while out of the country (South African medical aids may only give 90 days of cover to South Africans residing outside the country). After 90 days, you simply cannot belong to a South African medical aid scheme outside the country, and so, if you emigrate or live overseas for more than three months, you will pay for it forever. The punitive payments depend on the amount of time you have spent outside the country: 0-4 years: 5%, 5-14 years: 25%, 15-24 years: 50%, 25+ years: 75%

UK Immigration • UK Visas • Permits • EEA visas • Residency • Citizenship • Appeals • Sponsorship Licences South African Immigration

The formula required to establish your probable extra payment is a somewhat complex one, but let’s look at one example: You belonged to your parents’ medical aid until age 25. Then you were without medical aid cover for five years before acquiring medical aid cover for a further five years. Next you emigrated to the UK, where, for 14 years, you belonged to Pruhealth, which is associated with Discovery Health. Now, at the age of 49, you have returned to sunny South Africa. The formula gives you credit for the four years in which you were both above 21 and a dependent of your parents’ scheme. The five years on your own scheme also count. However – sadly for you – the state has decided that your 14 years with any medical aid do not count – not even with Discovery Health’s British partner. You should have belonged to a South African medical aid (although this would have been impossible). So now, you have only 9 years’ credit. But wait, that’s not all. Due to a rather Monty Pythonesque provision of the Act, medical aid cover will only be credited after the age of 35 – leaving our 49 year-old returnee with only 5 years’ credit. This puts you in the 5-14 year bracket above – and compels you pay 25% extra in medical aid premiums for yourself and your family, forever. So, where you and your family might have paid a R4000/month premium had you always remained in the country, you will now have to pay up to R12000 more annually, with later increases.

TIME TO LOOK INTO YOUR PREMIUMS: Time spent overseas may cost you dearly in higher medical aid fees, according to the new Medical Schemes Act.

I know this to be true because it happened to me. After 11 years of cover by Discovery’s Pruhealth in the UK, I approached an insurance broker who informed me by email that Discovery says it must enforce this rule, as it is law. Two other medical aid schemes said the same thing. Melani Winkler, senior legal adjudication officer of the registrar office for the Council for Medical Schemes, responded to my complaint, “Whilst we agree that there is merit in the questions raised by your complaint, the law does not permit us to make a ruling contrary to the provisions of the Act.”

Africa’s eyes on crucial Zimbabwe election | Successful elections in Zimbabwe are crucial both for that country’s own socio-economic development and for improved security in the southern African region, says South African Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim. by STAFF REPORTER

SUCCESSFUL elections in Zimbabwe are crucial both for that country’s own socio-economic development and for improved security in the southern African region, says South African Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim. Speaking to journalists in Pretoria on Thursday, Ebrahim said the South African government welcomed the fact that the overall atmosphere in Zimbabwe remained calm ahead of next week’s elections, with no major instances of violence or intimidation having been reported so far. Ebrahim added that South Africa hoped there wouldn’t be a repeat of Zimbabwe’s previous election in 2008, when the announcement of the results had been delayed, stoking concerns about poll rigging. Over sixmillion Zimbabweans who have

registered to vote will go to the polls next Wednesday to choose a president, more than 200 National Assembly members, and nearly 2 000 local councillors. A presidential candidate must garner 51 percent of all valid votes cast to be declared the winner. If not, a run-off will be held in September, according to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). The country’s veteran president, Robert Mugabe, and his rival, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, are among five presidential hopefuls in the polls. Regarding reports suggesting that Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party plan to rig the polls, Ebrahim said they would await the reports from the observer missions on the ground before commenting. Close to 6 000 Zimbabwean observers will monitor polls. International observers will include representatives from the

African Union (AU), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). AU Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma is already in Zimbabwe to assess the country’s preparations

for the polls, accompanied by the AU’s commissioner for political affairs and deputy head of the AU observer mission, Aisha Abdullah. Dlamini Zuma and Abdullah are expected to meet with a number of stakeholders, including the ZEC and political candidates.

Judge rules Shrien Dewani to be extradited to SA | British businessman Shrien Dewani’s family said his lawyers would be lodging an appeal against today’s court ruling that he is to be extradited to South Africa to stand trial for orchestrating the murder of his wife Anni

by STAFF REPORTER THE Westminster Magistrates Court has ruled that Shrien Dewani is to be extradited to South Africa to stand trial for orchestrating the murder of his wife, Anni. Dewani is accused of masterminding his 28-year-old wife’s murder in an alleged staged hijacking while they were on honeymoon in Cape Town in November 2010. Dewani, who is currently being treated for depression and severe post-traumatic stress disorder, did not attend today’s hearing in London. The British businessman denies being involved in his wife’s murder, and has appeared several times in a UK court to challenge his extradition on the grounds of poor mental health. In his ruling chief magistrate Howard Riddle said, “It is not in question that Shrien Dewani will be returned to South Africa. The treating clinicians continue to state that Mr Dewani will recover. There has been recovery, but it has been slow. It may be a long time before Mr Dewani is fit to plead, but he may be closer to that point.” Riddle said that it was not impossible that if returned now, after a reasonable period of further

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has met with Academy Award-winning actor and activist Charlize Theron in Pretoria, where they discussed South Africa’s response to HIV/ Aids and Theron’s role in the fight against the disease. In 2008, the United Nations named South African-born Theron as its Messenger of Peace, tasked with promoting efforts to end violence against women. The UN says on its website the Messengers of Peace are distinguished individuals, carefully selected from the fields of art, literature, music and sports. Following the meeting on Monday, Zuma said Theron’s UN humanitarian role continued to give South Africa’s fight against HIV a big boost.

treatment and assessment Dewani will be found fit to plead and a trial can take place. The courtroom was packed with Anni’s relatives, who wore photographs of her pinned to their clothes, decorated with pink ribbons. They said they were satisfied with the decision that Dewani should be extradited. Anni Dewani’s sister Ami Denborg said the ruling was “one step in the right direction” and that the family “will fight this battle to the end.”

Denborg hoped he would be sent to South Africa “very soon”. In an interview on ITV Daybreak this morning, she and her brother Anish Hindocha said the whole ordeal had taken its toll on their parents. “It’s been a nightmare for my parents, they can barely sleep. We as brother and sister are trying to be strong in front of them, it’s really difficult,” said Hindocha. In a statement, Dewani’s family said his lawyers would be lodging an appeal.

“She has been a pillar of strength in promoting our programmes. Today has been a very special day with this good citizen of ours joining us, she is representing South Africa in many respects. We believe the education of young people goes a long way to prevent any escalation of the disease. That’s what Charlize has been doing.” Flanked by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibé, Zuma said South Africa needed to play a leading role in the fight against HIV on the continent. “We believe the successes we make in South Africa will have a big impact on the continent.” Theron is recognised for her grassroots work focusing on social issues, particularly in South Africa, where she founded

the Africa Outreach Project. It provides funding for a mobile health and computer clinic that visits high schools in rural communities affected by HIV/Aids. The project provided about 5,000 students in remote communities with access to counselling and testing for HIV and other health issues, as well as computer training and health education, with a special focus on preventing HIV. On Monday, she urged youngsters in South Africa not to stop the conversation on HIV prevention. “We can never stop talking about this disease… If we don’t feel safe in our environment to talk about it, we cannot combat it. We all have to create the environment in which the youth of South Africa can talk about this and ask any question.

Butchery ‘A Cut Above’

Grant Hawthorne’s apple tart tatin

SOMETHING deeply satisfying about getting this right. The apples; pastry and caramel work to create a few mouthfuls of heaven. Get it wrong – soggy pastry etc – and it is awful. Timing is everything, as with most pastry work. Ingredients • Grease proof paper • 100g Castor Sugar • 100g Acacia Honey • 6 Granny Smith Apples • 6 Star Anise • 3 Vanilla Pods, halved • 300g Puff Pastry • 6 x 250ml aluminium moulds Method • You can make this recipe with most fruits. For soft fruit, such as strawberry and banana, roll the pastry thinner (about 1.5mm) and cook for shorter time, about 15 minutes. • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C/Gas 6 and put a baking sheet in the oven to heat. • Line the moulds with grease proof paper. • Put the sugar and honey in a small pan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. • Bring to a simmer and boil for 5

Apple Tart Tatin minutes, without stirring, or until you have a rich golden-brown caramel. • Pour the caramel in to the bases of the ramekins. • Peel and core the apples – then take a slice approximately 1cm from the top and the bottom of each. • Place one apple in each ramekin, making sure the tops of the apples are level with the tops of the ramekins. • Put one star anise and half a vanilla pod in the hollow centre

of each apple. Place on to the preheated baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until just tender. • Meanwhile, roll out the pastry disc over each baked apple, tucking the edges of the pastry down the sides of the apple, and return to the oven for 18-20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. • Leave to cool slightly, then invert on to the serving plates. • Serve with scoop of vanilla or caramel ice-cream.

Award-winning SA sensation ‘Mies Julie’ hits Oxford Playhouse in August

| ‘Mies Julie’ has won a string of international awards including an Edinburgh Fringe First Award, and has received 30 five-star ratings in under a year. FOLLOWING sell-out runs and sensational reviews at the Edinburgh Festival and London’s Riverside Studios, highly acclaimed South African drama Mies Julie receives its Oxford premiere and plays its only regional dates at Oxford Playhouse from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 August. Mies Julie has won a string of international awards including an Edinburgh Fringe First Award, and has received 30 five-star ratings in under a year. This explosive and unmissable new adaptation of August Strindberg’s classic Miss Julie sees the internationally acclaimed writer and director Yael Farber return to the Playhouse, following the success of Amajuba, Molora and Sezar. In the smouldering kitchen of a remote South African house, eighteen years after the end of apartheid, a single night of brutality and tenderness unfolds between a black farm labourer and his white master’s daughter. The visceral struggles of contemporary South Africa are laid bare as the couple’s deadly attraction spirals out of control and they battle over power, sexuality, memory, mothers and land.

IN our world of instant gratification, the announcement of the birth of bonny young Windsor would have taken the form of a tweet, a iOS, an email or some other form of …yes! Done. By the time the poor news agencies get a whiff of such priceless information, it’s old. And boring. Really, if anyone watched Sky News last night, once we saw the paper on easel at the gates of Buckingham Palace, the lids were drooping and drool threatening to escape like some of those

Still better than drums announcing the birth to the world back in the heydays I suppose? Back to television. How to extend this breaking news – I know! Repeat, and repeat and repeat again. Poor chaps, it’s difficult being taken seriously when a six year-old is standing at the hospital with a feed on Twitter. Now even Kim Kardashian can send a heartfelt message to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge before the dailies are out on sale. So, Happy Birthday, young prince. You are going to be part of this world. If you thought your granny Diana was hounded, there will be even less privacy for you. Every time your tiny face peeps from your carriage, someone will have you on camera. It is going to be a tough time growing up. How wonderful though that we are able to share in such a happy occasion. This has been a boom time for the Royal family – a hat trick of Wedding, Jubilee and now the new baby heir to the British throne. England is as proud as punch…I doubt even the most ardent anti-royalists can deny the feel-good patriotism coursing through the veins of locals and foreigners on these shores. The spirit of optimism is in the air. Only, and this is just me – the occasion was for me touched with a twinge of sadness that Diana was not there. She had her faults, but I wonder what kind of a granny she would have made? Certainly not one

We loved to see her at her best, and at her worst, but mostly being human. A real mom. I think she would have made a fantastic granny. As the young Prince of Cambridge alights upon this world, I wish him only joy. A healthy diet of love and attention, an opportunity to be himself and take his place in the world when the time comes. Guitarist, beatboxer, South African loop maestro – meet Jeremy Loops | Romy Becker caught up with rising South African one-man folk band Jeremy Loops, who played a string of UK dates last week. CAPE Town-based Jeremy Loops is a modern day one man folk band. Born out of necessity whilst working on yachts around the world, the 28-year-old discovered that there’s no-one better to work with than yourself. He recently toured the United States and United Kingdom, where he played London’s Jazz Cafe and The Great Escape festival in Brighton, and he returned last week to play Secret Garden Party and London’s Borderline. Tell us about your days on the yachts? During the day I was working and the evenings I spent time making music. When we were at sea I was in my element. Everyone else was either getting seasick or watching series on their computers, while I used a lot of time when we were at sea, between countries, making music. What makes your sound different to any other loop artist out there? A lot of loop artists build on single layers and they build big sounds on one layer. I use three different channels to do beats on the one, vocals on the one and guitar on the other so that I can take things in and out of song. A lot of loop artists build a song up to a climax and break it down, whereas I kind of try and make songs the way that I would want to hear them. I bring the beat in and take the beat away, I bring the chorus in and take it away and that’s something that took me a while to figure out. What are your instruments? Mostly the guitar, the harmonica, banjo at the moment, ukulele when I have it, I play some kids toys, do some beat boxing, I sing like a girl, sing like a giant, I have different effects on my voice which I use in my show a lot of the time, it’s improvised.

Nelson Mandela’s Living Legacy 1961 – MK bombings announce start of armed struggle OFFICIALLY separate from the ANC, in later years MK

Who would you want to collaborate with internationally? Oh wow, well I would love to collaborate with a couple of the world’s biggest loop artists like Imogen Heap, Dub Effects and Andrew Bird. When it comes to other bands it would be so varied, I don’t even know who I would choose. How does it feel to represent South Africa around the world? It feels good, I have started to warm to it. The first two years were mostly more terrifying than exciting and I only felt excited after the gig after it had gone well and then the next gig I was terrified again. I think some people were born to do this, some people grow up singing in the mirror thinking one day they are going to be on stage. I had none of that. I studied something completely different – property development and finance and then I was boating in isolation where I learnt to be on my own. All of a sudden in the last two and a half years I have really had to tap into my extroverted side and be willing to be constantly creating and constantly on the move and every week something bigger happens.

watching, the feedback was the opposite, the feedback was, Wow, I have seen so many loop artists but I have never seen someone do it like you do! So that really made me feel a lot more at peace with it all. In LA, we got such a good response and in New York the clubs are smaller. You feel like you’re almost starting from scratch. People don’t know you already so they’re not already dancing when you start, you have to kind of win them over. In the UK, there is definitely a feeling were people watch, cause they’re a band culture.

How does the audience in the States and UK differ to South Africa? I don’t think I have played enough shows to give you an accurate idea about that. The response has been a similar kind of excitement which I wasn’t expecting. I was under the impression that a lot of people in the States and the UK know what looping is all about whereas when I started doing it in South Africa there weren’t that many people doing it and I was quickly able to become the “loop artist”. Playing at all the festivals I was concerned that they would be like ah, I have seen that before but in Los Angeles at the conference I played at, with all the industry’s top people

What advice would you give fellow musicians? The only advice I ever give to anyone about anything is that you can’t perfect things before you start doing them. If you want to actually make shit happen in your life, you have to go out on a limb and start. That’s what I found. I spent so much time wondering whether it was good enough, wondering whether it was the right thing, trying to perfect something that I didn’t even know what it was yet and when I started playing all those questions became clear. You start troubleshooting its like Google or Apple – that’s how they do things, they test things in the market and develop as they go.

became the group’s armed wing. Most early MK members were white communists; of these, many were Jewish immigrants for whom Nazism was an all too recent memory. After hiding in communist Wolfie Kodesh’s flat in Berea, Mandela moved to the communist-owned Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, there joined by Raymond Mhlaba, Slovo and Bernstein, who put together the MK constitution. Although Mandela himself denied ever being a Communist Party member, historical research has suggested that he might have been for a short period, starting from the late 1950s or early 1960s. Operating through a cell structure, the MK agreed to acts of sabotage to exert maximum

pressure on the government with minimum casualties, bombing military installations, power plants, telephone lines and transport links at night, when civilians were not present. Mandela noted that should these tactics fail, MK would resort to “guerilla warfare and terrorism.” Soon after ANC leader Luthuli was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the MK publicly announced its existence with 57 bombings on Dingane’s Day (16 December) 1961, followed by further attacks on New Year’s Eve. The juxtaposition of Luthuli’s Nobel laureateship with the first MK bombings reflected the fundamental schism within the ANC as deepening state repression and segregation forced it to embrace armed struggle.

The Cape Grand restaurant brings flavours of Ouma’s kitchen to UK

| Jonette Seeby, who inherited her flair for cooking from her colourful and talented grandmother in South Africa, tells us the story behind her UK restaurant Cape Grand. THE Cape Grand Cafe & Restaurant in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire is owned and run by the dynamic British-South African duo of Mark and Jonette Seeby. Jonette, who inherited her flair for cooking from her colourful and talented grandmother in South Africa, tells us the story behind the Cape Grand. How did you two meet? It was 1997. It’s a long story and has the makings of a best seller. When Mark has the time he has promised to write the book, unless there is a good ghost writer out there looking for a project. But here is the abridged version: I was running a 5 star boutique hotel in Kensington and Mark at the time was working as a detective in London’s West End. The rest is history.

Are you united in your passion for food? Absolutely, we were both influenced by our grandmothers. Mark’s grandmother was the head cook in an English country home, where Harrods and Fortnum & Mason would deliver the finest of foods, she was an old school Mrs Beeton. My grandmother was an artistic and creative Afrikaans lady. She was a big woman, her passion was fashion and food. As a five-year-old I stayed up late into the night and made roses with the icing clay that she used to make the most amazing iced flowers and finery for wedding cakes looking like white marble statues. Her hands always smelt of good food. What is your core food philosophy? Quality, consistency, keeping abreast of current trends and flavours. How are you influenced by modern South African cuisine? South Africa, like Australia, is renowned for freshness and quality and adapting to current trends. Modern South African food is a twist on the old favourites adding new flavours, for example sweet potato chips with a truffle oil aioli mayo, bobotie samosas, biltong carpaccio with pickled mushrooms and shaved Parmesan. My flavours come from the heart. What makes your restaurant unique? I have cooked for the last three presidents of South Africa when they visited the UK. We are so passionate about what we do that consistency is paramount. We will not accept second best. We are not looking for a Michelin star but have created a good local neighbourhood restaurant serving good quality freshly cooked food. We are not a chain and can adapt our menu accordingly.

If South Africans are missing that taste of home then The Cape is the place to be any day of the week or on a Friday or Saturday evening. We have an excellent selection of South African wines and beers. We also have an outside catering side of the business – weddings are our speciality. We were flown out to Franschhoek in January to cater at a three-day wedding for the goddaughter of one of the directors of Spier Estate. Describe the location of The Cape Grand. It is in the busy but quaint South Buckinghamshire market town of Beaconsfield. We don’t have too many chains in our high street yet, although they are beginning to appear. Buckinghamshire has retained the 11+ and grammar school system and good education is something the majority of South Africans are passionate about. We are surrounded by some of the best schools in the UK therefore we have a large South African clientele, coupled with the fact we sell probably the best food, biltong and boerewors for miles around.

I believe you are connected to a restaurant in Cape Town? Yes, Table Thirteen at Victoria Junction, Green Point is a small deli day time cafe owned and run by my daughter Lara O’Sullivan. She vowed never to go into the food business but having grown up in The Greyton Lodge Hotel it is in her blood. She has also opened a small takeaway in Paarden Island, Cape Town. We exchange recipes and ideas – she is constantly e-mailing me for recipes and asking how did we used to make this and that. What are your future plans? We have the family farm in Swellendam, on the border of De Hoop nature reserve, which we would love to turn into a small luxury guest retreat 40km off the main road, but the restaurant and our catering keeps us busy here. The trouble is we are the business and find it difficult to leave it alone. Are you involved in any charitable projects? We have just forged a relationship with Springfield Wine Estate in Robertson and promote the ‘Thunderchild’ wine where all profits go a local Robertson orphanage. Mark’s mother has multiple sclerosis so that charity gets his attention. We also donate to local schools and fundraising events whenever possible. Visiting the Cape Grand: If you’re coming from London, Beaconsfield is 20 minutes on the train from Marylebone and the restaurant is literally two minutes away. (Turn right out of Beaconsfield station, walk up the road and at the T-junction it’s diagonally across the road).

Inside Mugabe’s atrocities with documentary “Beatrice Mtetwa and The Rule of Law”

| As Zimbabwe approaches general elections, a newly-released documentary on fearless attorney Beatrice Mtetwa and her defendants shows what happens when rulers place themselves above the law.

by SILVIA BIANCO DIRECTED by Peabody award winning American filmmaker Lorie Conway, the documentary ‘Beatrice Mtetwa and The Rule of Law’ highlights the appalling lack of the rule of law in Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe’s regime. In spite of beatings by the police, attorney Beatrice Mtetwa has courageously defended in court those jailed by the Mugabe government – peace activists, journalists, opposition candidates, farmers that had their land confiscated, ordinary citizens that had the courage to speak up. Although Mtetwa’s arena is Zimbabwe, her message and bravery are universal. Through interviews with Mtetwa and some of her defendants, the documentary tells the story of what happens when rulers place themselves above the law and why defence of the rule of law is a crucial step in the building of a civil society. The director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project, Jestina Mukoko was abducted, tortured, and detained for 89 days. On her trial day she was taken to the courtroom in handcuffs and leg-irons. “I had done nothing wrong, but I was there, in front of my son, being paraded like a hard-core criminal. There are thousands of Zimbabweans who are also facing injustice and whose voices are unheard, and we need to amplify those voices,” she explains. Members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (Woza), have been arrested and jailed for demonstrating for human rights. 200 members were arrested on Valentine’s Day. Mtetwa defended them and “it was wonderful to see how she helped to bring alive the demonstration issues into the courtroom. And of course she won the case”, said Woza members Jenni Williams and Magadonga Mahlangu. “They will never take away the joy that for those moments, when we are in the street holding the placard, we are human beings enjoying freedom.” For Mtetwa, the arrest of one woman is equal to the arrest of all Zimbabwean women, since they all share the same aspirations: they call for basic education for their children,

basic health facilities, clean running water, and affordable food prices. Roy and Heather Bennett’s political activism led the government to illegally seize their farm. “They gathered all my workers, they took them to my house, and they started to beat them. After being elected to Parliament, Roy was arrested and imprisoned. “The few times I could have contact with the outside world was when Beatrice used to come and visit me. Beatrice had a huge impact on getting me out of there alive. If you want to sum up and understand what ‘hate’ means, just say Robert Mugabe. Because of his hatred he has completely destroyed the country, and the people. That’s what hate does to a country. It poisons it, it kills it. It breaks down the complete fabric of society and existence.” Elias Mudzuri, a member of opposition party the Movement for Democratic Change, was elected Mayor of Harare. Within a year of his election he was arrested, jailed and driven out of office. Mudzuri’s wife says in the documentary, “I was arrested doing my work in the office, that’s when I realised that there was no justice. If they can’t get you, they will get the nearest thing that they know will hurt you deeply. His parents were the nearest target.” Most of the media in Zimbabwe is controlled by the Mugabe regime; independent newspapers and journalists are targeted and prosecuted under laws that are selectively interpreted. Andrew Meldrum was the last foreign correspondent in Zimbabwe, he concentrated on the human rights abuses against black Zimbabweans, the political violence and the torture Mugabe’s agents were using against MDC supporters. He was charged with violating a newly-enacted law meant to make the practice of journalism illegal. “Unlike a lot of other dictators Robert Mugabe doesn’t just go out and do what he wants, first he goes to parliament and passes a law” that legitimises the government’s actions,” Mtetwa explains. On March 17, 2013, one day after

Howzat! Umpire signals BYE the Rand BUY now at:

a new Constitution was passed in Zimbabwe, Mtetwa was arrested after she tried to prevent the police from illegally searching the office of a client. Beatrice spent the next eight days in prison. Upon her release she said, “The police were out to get me. They wanted me to feel their might and power because I call myself a human rights lawyer.” Mtetwa staunchly believes that within her lifetime Zimbabwe’s judiciary will re-function normally and the rule of law will be restored. She and director Lorie Conway hope that the film will spark dialogue and change in Zimbabwe and throughout Africa, while also bringing the story of this inspiring woman to the attention of the rest of the world. The DVD of this documentary will be distributed in South Africa, UK and several other countries. See ruleoflawfilmproject.com for updates.

Jobs for those who want them

The ongoing lack of available skills creates huge opportunities for those who are prepared to acquire the appropriate skills required for the financial, IT and financial sectors in South Africa. EMPLOYMENT statistics revealed by Network Recruitment indicate that the high demand for talent and skills in the financial, IT and engineering sectors is unlikely to abate and should serve as a career guide for graduates who are returning to South Africa. During 2012 over a third of all Network Finance’s placements in this sector went to qualified financial accountants and financial managers, with 50% of

all IT positions filled by developers. Analysts and administrators were also among the top IT positions. Figures showed high demand across the board in the engineering sector, with mechanical engineers, draughtsmen, sales engineers and artisans accounting for an equal share of the most sought-after skills. The ongoing lack of available skills creates huge opportunities for those who are prepared to acquire the appropriate skills required for the financial, IT and financial sectors in South Africa. During 2012 the top five categories in the engineering and

finance sectors advertised on the country’s two largest online recruitment service providers confirmed the demand. In engineering, millwrights; fitters; electricians; electrical engineers and mechanical engineers were in high demand. In finance, the top five advertised positions were for financial managers; auditors; bookkeepers; financial accountants and management accountants. Coming home? Partner with the best to secure your employment future Improve your chances of career success in South Africa by working with an APSO member

RE-ESTABLISHING yourself can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to securing employment. For many, using the services of a reputable recruiter is the answer. They are able to assist you in understanding the local job market, adapting your UK experience to the SA environment and managing your expectations in terms of remuneration and employment conditions. However, as there are no barriers to entry, you could find yourself dealing with someone unprofessional. The Federation of African Professional Staffing Organisations (APSO) was established in 1977

and promotes and ensures, for the benefit of both clients and candidates, the adherence to high ethical and professional standards of business. Membership of APSO is not compulsory, so improve your experience by choosing to work only with APSO member agencies. APSO membership is not automatic and so any staffing company that wishes to join is required to meet certain minimum criteria before membership is granted. These include among others, legal compliance, professional standards of operation, fair labour practice and adherence

to the APSO Code of Ethical & Professional Practice. And, in the event that you have a poor experience, you can lodge a complaint (at no cost) with APSO. We will assist you in managing the dispute and finding resolution. So, to improve your chances of career success in South Africa, choose to work with an APSO member. Teachers wanted for Middle East contract work SA-Recruitment has successfully placed hundreds of teachers into positions across the Gulf region SA-RECRUITMENT is a specialist teacher recruitment agency based in Cape Town, South Africa, recruiting qualified teachers for contract work in the Middle East/Gulf States – UAE emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Established in 2004, SARecruitment has successfully placed hundreds of teachers into positions across the Gulf region and has a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges of

working in this part of the world. We ensure that our teachers are informed candidates before we start working with them as our objective is to place them in a school that is best-suited to their qualifications/ profile. Our team has many years of experience in the recruitment and teaching fields, and we guide and assist our teachers from registration through to fly date. Most of our teachers come to us via word-ofmouth, and we pride ourselves on

our hands-on approach. We don’t waste our teachers’ time (or our time) by promising what we can’t deliver; we deal with the reality of teaching in the Middle East. Our very strict selection process ensures that our candidates’ skills and experience match our clients’ requirements, and that the position matches the candidate’s needs and career objectives. At this point in time we are actively recruiting KG, KS1 homeroom teachers and secondary school English teachers for contracts in the Middle East, to start in early September 2013. Qualified teachers wishing to pursue a career in the Gulf states can visit our website for more information - sarecruitment/information for teachers – or email their CV’s to Nicole@ sa-recruitment.com.

The South African job market:

There’s no place like home!

Emigration is nothing new for South Africans – and now many are returning home again. THERE have been numerous reports in the last couple of years about the hordes of skilled South Africans that are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad. At one point, almost everybody you talked to either had a friend or family member in London, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Yet, it seems that times are changing: experts say many South Africans are now returning, especially as the economies of the rich world have stumbled. At Communicate Personnel we get many enquiries from expats looking for information about the job market, cost of living and outlook in South Africa. There are so many great reasons to return to South Africa (and it’s also important to realise that it’s not always perfect), but hey, don’t wait until it gets better, come home and help make it better. Here are some of the

things to consider when deciding if it’s time to come back to sunny South Africa: Cost of living: A big plus: living in South Africa can be cheaper than most parts of the United Kingdom and the world, but it’s important to be aware that the US dollar, the British pound, and the Euro won’t stretch as far as they used to. Escalating food and high fuel prices are rapidly eating into the previously reasonably priced South African lifestyle – but it’s still cheaper here. There are also the rate hikes of electricity and road taxes to consider as well as the muchcontended E-toll system in Gauteng. Transport: Some great improvements have been made, with for instance, the Gautrain, although the public transport system in South Africa is still a bit chaotic and unreliable at times. Depending on where you live and work, you

will need to consider the transport options carefully. In most cases expats will need to purchase their own vehicle. Car prices can be reasonable, depending on personal taste, and it may not always be necessary to purchase a new vehicle. Food cost: There is no question that local produce and South African brands are substantially cheaper than imported goods, although the differential of some goods with the UK has narrowed over the years. Overall though, as most expats and locals will tell you, the quality of life in South Africa is unparalleled and there is, after all, no place like home! So if you are considering packing your bags and need to find employment in South Africa, contact Communicate Personnel. We specialise in the Finance, IT, Engineering and Supply Chain/ Freight industries at www.communicate.co.za

Worldwide pet shipping with JCS Pet Travel

WHILST returning home on your own passport can be easy, unfortunately, whether your pet was born in the UK or abroad, it will be treated as a stranger when heading home with you. With this in mind it’s important to consider their move near the start of the process. Moving to Australia, with their infamous border protection, needs planning around seven months to achieve the minimum thirty day’s quarantine on arrival. The run-up to the move includes vet treatments and blood tests (for dogs) as well as import and export permits. South Africa might not have quarantine, but there are still blood

tests and permits, as well as the flight itself. Be warned though: the process, which includes flight kennels and the flight, can be expensive. For all destinations, the first thing to do is to consult a pet travel agent, confirm the vet procedures and get an idea of timing and costing. You can

then make a moving calendar with furry milestones as well as personal ones. JCS Pet Travel specialises in worldwide pet transport for most types of animal to all destinations. Mischa Dubrovo | Royal Marine

| After excelling at the extremely demanding team sport of rowing at St Benedict’s College, Mischa decided to make a career of teamwork by signing up for the Royal Marines, which first meant passing what is arguably the working world’s toughest physical challenge. by BRETT PETZER

Current rank and age? My rank is Marine (Mne); I’m 23

What experiences in your life would you say helped you prepare for the rigours of training? I came from a family that struggled financially which gave us no choice but to be mentally tough during certain day-to-day challenges. I

1. Endurance Course (Saturday) You will work your way through two miles (3.2 km) of tunnels, pools, streams, bogs and woods, then run four miles back to camp, all while you’re in combat equipment (21lbs/9.5kg) and carrying a weapon(10lbs/4.5kg), and all in less than 73 minutes. When you get back, you’ll have to get six out of 10 shots on target in a 25 metre shooting test. 2. The nine-mile/14 kilometre speed march (Monday) You need to complete this in 90 minutes, while carrying your equipment and a rifle. 3. The ‘Tarzan’ assault course (Tuesday) An aerial slide, ropes course, assault course and 30-foot wall, which you will need to complete in 13 minutes, while carrying equipment and a rifle. 4. The 30-mile/48 kilometre march (Wednesday) A 30-mile march across Dartmoor, which you will need to complete in under eight hours with heavier equipment (weighing 13kg) and a rifle. Officers must cover the same route in seven hours. Which of these were the toughest? The toughest one for me was definitely the 30 miler. With 12 miles left to go both my knees were swollen and cramped up, but when a person is that close to the light, it’s amazing how much strength one will find inside themself.

Why the Royal Marines? I heard about the reputation that the Royal Marines had, and I researched a bit more to get an idea of how challenging it was. I compared the basic training program to other branches, but always found that the Royal Marine basic training seemed longer and more physically challenging. Thus, I decided to give it a go! How can a South African go about applying to the Marines? It is quite simple really – make a phone call to the application office, get the forms posted to your home address and fill in the forms from there. However, the academic and physical tests to get selected for training all need to be completed in the UK. Only once an applicant has passed each academic and physical test successfully in the correct order is the applicant accepted as a recruit and is ready to begin the 32 weeks of basic training.

| 29 July - 5 August 2013 | thesouthafrican.com

How many of you made it? We began with 54, and out of those 54 there were only 19 that passed.

also rowed for my high school (St Benedict’s College) which is the second most difficult endurance sport in the world, as well as played rugby. Both sports gave me a great sense of teamwork as well as cheerfulness in the face of adversity. Could you take us through the basic steps required to receive your green beret? The 32 weeks of training culminate in four Commando Tests, done within seven days. These are the final proof that a recruit is ready for his green beret and can start as a Royal Marine Commando or continue to Young Officer training. The commando tests are as follows:

What do you miss about SA? Geez, waar begin ek?! The weather was a big thing for me. Being born in Durban I was used to the warm humidity of that part of SA. Another thing I miss a lot is the easygoing culture that we display and live by as a nation, and also obviously my loved ones. How are you treated by the public while in uniform? The attitude towards people in uniform is the same from around the nation. The general public are not our greatest fans by any means. Which is weird because in the US, the majority of the public show a great support towards their servicemen and servicewomen. [In the UK,] I’d say every 1 in 3 shops has a military discount option, which does help keep the wallet a bit thicker. If you were PM for a day, what would you change? I would do my best to get better combat equipment, vehicles and electronics.

Marines training confers skills useful in any conceivable combat scenario

What has been the most rewarding single experience you’ve had in training/in the Marines so far? The best feeling for me was definitely celebrating my pass out parade with my family. They were always behind me no matter what, but having them physically there with me on the day of my pass out parade was absolutely priceless.

Popular franchise hits UK | Following great success in Australia and New Zealand, Local Appliance Rentals Ltd is now inviting new franchisees to join them in growing the business in Britain.

LOCAL Appliance Rentals Ltd is an established franchise with over 80 franchisees in Australia and New Zealand. They have achieved this outstanding result in less than three years of operations. They are now proud to announce that they have recently appointed a master franchisee for the London region alone. However, as founder and CEO Kenneth French points out “Prior to starting our franchise operation, we had been running Local Appliance Rentals for many years and had a very profitable business model that we wanted to share with others.” Local Appliance Rentals Ltd rents a large range of household appliances to consumers including fridges, washing machines, flat screen TVs, laptops, smart phones and furniture. The rental term is usually over two years and the customer is able to own the product at the end of the rental term through a zero pound ‘gift-it’ offer. The rental industry is well established in the UK with several large to medium sized operators. However, until now, there has not been an opportunity to join a franchised operation. In these tough economic times, the industry has proven to be totally recession proof. With so many businesses struggling during the Global Financial Crisis, Local Appliance Rentals Ltd actually experienced substantial growth with sales unaffected by the difficult economic times. In fact, Mr French said it was sometimes embarrassing talking about how well their business was doing whereas many other businesses had only tales of doom and gloom. Mr French says that the rapid growth that Local Appliance Rentals Ltd has achieved in less than three years is only possible because of the massive performance that is being achieved from their franchisees. Mr French comments, “Many of our franchisees have voted with

their cheque books, with twelve of our Advertorial franchisees having purchased multiple territories and another 15 having upgraded their territories to the next level as they have decided to expand their businesses.” Mr French said that just recently they have even had a staff member who has left their role at head office to become a franchisee. As he says, “You can’t get a better endorsement of the business than that.” The majority of franchisees work from home and love the flexibility that this gives them and the fact that it is a business that only operates Monday to Friday 9am-5pm with no nights, weekends or public holidays. This is in stark contrast to so many other business models where owners are working long hours, 7 days a week. “With a Local Appliance Rentals Ltd franchise, the hours that you work are flexible and there are many franchises operated by women who can run the business from home but can also pick up the kids from school,” says Mr French. One of the features of this franchise is the online software system called SAFRA. This custom software is used to run the entire business from producing contracts, to ordering goods, keeping track of payments and customers and making your tax simple and easy to calculate at the end of the year. Launching in June at the British Franchise Exhibition in Manchester, potential franchisees had an opportunity to meet the team including the International Sales Director Mr Sacha Caller. Mr Caller is himself a multi-unit franchisee with several franchises in and around Melbourne that are already running successfully under his management. “We are looking for keen motivated franchisees in all areas of the UK but we also have several opportunities for master franchisees for the more experienced operator,” Mr Caller said. Mr Caller says that they are making a special UK launch offer of 2 territories for the price of 1 for the first five franchisees. Kagisho Dikgacoi Bafana Bafana and Crystal Palace footballer BULLET BIOGRAPHY Born: 24 November 1984 (age 28) Place of birth Brandfort, South Africa Weight: 81 kg Career start: 2005 Salary: 600,000 GBP (2011) Height 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) Playing position Defensive midfielder (#13 for Bafana Bafana), Central midfielder (#8 for Crystal Palace FC) Career Trajectory 2005 Bloemfontein Young Tigers 2005–2009 Golden Arrows 2009–2011 Fulham 2011 Crystal Palace Twitter @KGDikgacoi

by BRETT PETZER KAGISHO Dikgacoi has come off a very successful season with Crystal Palace to secure his place in the English Premiership for the coming season. Dikgacoi’s season ended with a memorable 1-0 win against Watford in the English Championship Play-off Final on Monday, elevating Fulham into the Premiership. Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund was no doubt disturbed to see Dikgacoi suffer a calf injury a mere quarter-hour into the game, which saw him cheering his team on from the sidelines, draped in the South African flag. Dikgacoi’s fine form of late has many Bafana fans pinning their hopes of a glorious return to form in next year’s Fifa World Cup in Brazil. Dikgacoi fans were properly delighted with their hero’s return to the Premiership, where he last played in the 2010/2011 season for Fulham. Dikgacoi made 13 starts for Fulham before transferring to a struggling Palace in early 2011. But this season, despite Crystal Palace’s woes, ‘KG’, as the footballer is known, made a superb 43 starts and has become one of the team’s key players. Dikgacoi began his career at local club Cardiff Spurs, before moving to Durban-based Golden Arrows in 2005 as a little-known holding midfielder from lower league side Bloemfontein Young Tigers.

At Arrows, he developed into one of the country’s best players in his position and was subsequently rewarded with the captain’s armband. Dikgacoi’s value as a powerful, fast midfielder made him a favourite to join Bafana Bafana and he was soon called to the team, debuting on 27 May 2007 in a COSAFA Cup match against Mauritius. He scored his first two goals on 7 June 2008, in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Equatorial Guinea, which ended 4–1. Dikgacoi was part of Bafana Bafana’s 2008 African Nations Cup squad and was also a participant at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup. The young Free State midfielder soon began to attract international attention from scouts, and in

August 2009, Dikgacoi announced that he had reached an agreement with English club Fulham. After a successful trial at the club, Dikgacoi - like so many South Africans of talent in the UK - struggled to obtain a work permit. When this was finally granted later that same month, Dikgacoi packed his bags for the UK, but the UK football season had already started by that time. The 24-year-old suffered the delay due to an arcane UK rule relating to football players. Players from outside the European Union must represent a country in the world’s top 70 if they are to come to the UK, and South Africa had 70 to 72 in in recent months. But this technicality was soon enough circumvented, although the entire episode is a sobering reminder of how quickly immigration fine-print can change the lives of talented people. Dikgacoi, who had played in every South Africa match during June 2009’s Confederations Cup, slowly proved himself at Fulham. ‘KG’’s first season at Fulham was a good one, but after appearing only once for the club in the 2010/11 season under coach Mark Hughes, he was allowed to drop down a division on loan to Crystal Palace until the end of the season. At Palace, KG soon distinguished himself by scoring against Cardiff in March 2011, before being snapped up by Palace on a permanent basis in July. KG knew he had come a long way from Brandfort when he learned that he had been bought for £600,000. Coach Dougie Freedman was determined to scure the powerful centre midfielder at any price after KG impressed at Selhurst Park. He said at the time, “KG will sign today on a permanent deal...He’s my kind of player and I’ve persuaded the chairman to buy him. At only 26 he is only going to get better with more games and I see it as a good investment for the football club.” This sentiment was to prove very accurate, as Kagisho Dikgacoi - now worth around £1.7 million -

moves to the English Premiership in June with a home game against Tottenham Hotspur in what will be a tough start for Crystal Palace’s London rivals. A trip to Stoke City and a home match with Sunderland is then followed by a visit to Old Trafford and Manchester United on September 14 in what is likely to be a season highlight for the Bafana Bafana midfielder. Dikgacoi was in the Palace side that defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford in a League Cup fixture the season before last. Palace will close their season on May 11 with an away trip to

Dikgacoi’s former side Fulham, when he will hope they are not involved in a relegation battle. There is every hope that by then the Freestater’s calf will have healed - South Africa’s hopes for Brazil depend on it. However, Dikgacoi showed real platteland humility on the subject. In May this year, he said “I also hope the form I am in, I will be able to bring it to the Bafana squad – that is if I am fortunate to be selected for the forthcoming matches. I hope by that time Palace would have clinched a Premier League spot so I can bring the excitement to the national team,” he said.

What is the Shortage Occupation list and how does it affect me? by STAFF REPORTER

THE UK Home Office is advised by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) as to which areas of the UK labour market are experiencing shortages. The occupations experiencing shortages of labour are then compiled in the Shortage Occupation List. The Shortage Occupation List is used in the Tier 2 Immigration category. The implication of an occupation not being on the Shortage Occupation List is that employers are required to advertise the position. Where the employer can demonstrate, after advertising, that there is no suitably qualified resident or EU citizen candidate available to fill the vacancy a sponsorship certificate can be issued to the non-EU citizen. This is done to protect the domestic labour market. For more information on Tier 2 or to apply for your Tier 2 work permit, please contact our offices at info@bicimmigration.com. THE Rand began trading at around 15.0657 to the British Pound last Monday and around 9.8665 against the US Dollar. South African inflation unexpectedly slowed in June as the Rand rebounded from a four-year low. The inflation rate declined to 5.5 percent in June from 5.6 percent in May. The Reserve Bank held the repurchase rate at 5 percent for the sixth time in a meeting last week. The South African Rand slid on Friday versus most major peers as China ordered more than 1,400 companies to cut excess production capacity, dimming the outlook for the country’s exporters. The Rand dropped 0.5 percent to 9.7704 against the US dollar. The Rand weakened against the US Dollar in early trade on Monday after the Reserve Bank data showed growth in credit extension to the private sector slowed again in June. The data backs the Reserve Banks case to consider another interest rate cut. Looking ahead this week, there is

a lot of month-on-month data to be released out of the US, Eurozone and SA and there is bound to be a lot of volatility in the market. With all the speculation surrounding the US Fed’s plans on rolling back monetary stimulus any and all data will be looked at with a great deal of interest. Competition heats up as season reaches half-way mark

| Time for teams to knuckle down as our underdog teams continue to consolidate their performance through hard work. Perhaps our top teams have indeed been getting too comfortable in their podium positions? Is a shakedown imminent?

by MIKE ABROMOVITZ

WELL, as the saying goes “It’s now or never!” With most venues hitting the half way season mark this week, you could really see all teams realise it’s now time to knuckle down and work hard for those finals positions! With another blissful week of sunshine and heat, it has been a definite case of blood, sweat and tears left to water the pitches! It has been amazing to see the overall team improvement that has happened in merely half a season. With some of our underdog teams finally shining through and showing the big guns of the league

that their podium position isn’t going to be guaranteed this season. With most teams arriving early to warm up, you can now see the ripple effects and how the level of speed, skill and finesse on display has intensified. Creating this amazing ‘in it to win it’ atmosphere, all teams though competitive, are still always willing to lend a helping coaching hand when needed. 4 weeks remaining until our highly anticipated finals, at this stage, it’s anyone’s game! The sun wasn’t the only thing heating up London this week though, with our Super League competition more closely

19th World Transplant Games begin in Durban | Durban hosts World Transplant Games this week, attracting international athletes under the motto “Our Heart Are Beating” by SERTAN SANDERSON

FORGET the 2012 London Olympics, forget the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The sporting event that should be talked about the most right now is the 19th World Transplant Games in Durban, South Africa this week. The week-long competition is expected to attract sportsmen and women from around the world, using the power of sports to raise awareness about the issues of organ donation and transplantation. It is also set to highlight the quality of life that can be enjoyed after receiving donor organs. The opening of the World Transplant Games was marked with a ceremony featuring a mass choir performance of the official event song, “Our Hearts Are Beating”. The transnational multi-sport event will be held at Durban’s Kings Park Sporting Precinct, which was purpose-built for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. There will be 23 sporting events held during the Games, including athletics,

swimming, tennis, golf, cycling and ten pin bowling. A poignant choice to host the Games, South Africa prides itself as the first country to have successfully transplanted a human heart at Groote Schuur hospital Cape Town in 1967. Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the revolutionary procedure on 54-year-old Louis Washkansky, whose diabetes had caused him irreparable heart damage. More recently South Africa made sporting history with Oscar Pistorius being the first athlete with a disability to be allowed to compete in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Changes in organ donation guidelines and practices are also set to begin in the United Kingdom, with Wales introducing an “opt out” scheme fashioned after the Austrian model, whereby organ donations will automatically be taken upon death unless the deceased had previously stated his or her opposition.

contested than ever. Raising the bar in every aspect of the game, both the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Super League teams take the fields in Putney/Wandsworth on Thursday each week, showing each other how it is done. Along with all the hot action that has been hitting the pitches, it’s the action off the pitch that really starts to heat things up! That’s right, we all know that touch players are the most amazing… at baking! Homemade pies, quiche

and sausage rolls make regular appearances at our Clapham Common venue with one team in particular, Salmonella Dublon, sharing after game bevvies and snacks! But for those teams that haven’t been blessed with a Jamie Oliver incarnate, we do have each of our venues connected to a local pub – where teams can go and debrief and battle through those post game blues, whilst nibbling away at the FREE snacks generously provided by the

respective venue. With 16 venues around England from Clapham Common and Regents Park to St Albans and Manchester, with over 600 teams playing in the London leagues alone and over 1,000 teams playing country wide, this growing sport is taking the nation by storm. SOUTH AFRICAN BRIT WINS 2013 CROQUET BRITISH OPEN

| SA-born world champion and London businessman Reg Bamford does it again, taking the 2013 Croquet British Open at the Hurlingham Club in London. Bamford’s win highlights the popularity of a summer sport with over 2500 UK players at club level by STAFF REPORTER

REG Bamford, founder and director of 1st Contact and Sable, has won the 2013 Croquet British Open, which was held from July 13 to 21 at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham. This is not the first time Reg has won this event – he has taken the British Open title no less than 10 times and is a double world champion in both Golf Croquet and Association Croquet, having won the World Championship in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2012. Reg was born in Cape Town, South Africa and even though he now resides in Putney, England, he still plays croquet for his native country. He started playing croquet at the age of seven and got hooked. “I’m very competitive and it was a volatile mix,” he explained. “It’s an intellectual game that you play outdoors. Also some Springboks give up rugby when they are 32, I can actually play this until I’m 80. I have been able to travel around the world and meet incredible people.” One has to wonder what Africanborn Brits have that makes them excel at their chosen sports – Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior and Jonathan Trott are all South African-born English cricketers at the top of their game; winner

of the Tour de France Chris Froome was born in Kenya and is a major rising star in the cycling world; and croquet has long been dominated by Reg Bamford, who has a British passport but is also South African-born. Perhaps the saying “Africa is not for sissies” is true, and their African roots have equipped them with a certain inner strength

and fortitude that allows them to rise to the top. Or maybe it’s simply the “pap”– a maize-based porridge consumed in South Africa and other parts of Africa, long said to make kids grow up “big and strong”! Either way, everyone at Sable is delighted Reg is representing his native South Africa and congratulate him on his splendid victory.
