Are our fallen heroes turning in their graves or smiling from above?
Writer Palesa Motaung JUNE 16, 2015 The Channel O Youth Day advert caused controversy among the citizens of South Africa during our Youth Month this year. The reinterpretation of the iconic struggle photograph was an arguable concept of the Black River FC agency in Cape Town. The agency’s ambition was to recreate the depiction of the struggle era by portraying a more proud and overjoyed youth as opposed to the original heart wrenching image that represents the lives lost in 1976. They substituted subject was that of the iconic image of Hector Pieterson, whose lifeless body was carried by MbuyisaMakhubo after being shot by the police during the protest, alongside his panicstricken sister Antoinette Pieterson, aged (17) at the time. The mock up interpretation of the iconic struggle era image was criticized and deemed as insensitive and atrocious by

numerous people. The provoking photograph replaced the lifeless body of the Pieterson child with graduation regalia. Though it was alleged that the recreation of the image was intended to promote hard work and education, which is something the nation has been encouraging and stimulating amongst the youth for past decades. Hence it was no coincidence when that very same youth was excited about the advanced idea. They styled it as creative and genius while tweeting and commenting about it on various social media platforms. “The message behind it is powerful and I see it as ‘isikhumbuzo’” says Nomvula from Soweto. A young girl who believes that this interpretation is a memory, “the uniform which the man is carrying stands for education and it should be honoured and respected just like the heroes.” This is an approval from her that our fallen heroes are smiling from above.
