Photographers were able to enter up to 3 photos and be selected to present their work in a group show in September 2017. Judges, Chris L. Selected entries are exhibited at the Waverley Library from September, 13 until October, 11. On the opening night, Thursday 14th September from 6pm, we will announce the winners of the contest.

THE JUDGES

Chris L. Jones

Simon Mottram

I am a photographer and writer based in Sydney with a career spanning 35 years that started as assistant to several London photographers including pioneering food photographer, Anthony Blake, and special effects guru, Ray Massey. After turning pro I began working on UK titles like Good Housekeeping, Country Living, Building and various other architectural and arts magazines before relocating to Sydney shooting for advertising, corporate, design and direct commercial clients. That was followed by regular work on cookbook titles including the international award winning Food of France and Food of Italy for Murdoch Books.

I grew up in an artsy culturally aware family in the 1960’s/70’s and started dabbling in photography at the age of seven when I was given a Kodak Instamatic and an experimental photo developing kit. Not having any money I soon converted my Dad’s slide projector into a darkroom enlarger and the ball was rolling. Following high school I was for some years a professional photo finisher (old school term for Photoshop expert). I attended Uni and studied Film, Media and Fine Arts and found my way into the TV Industry working with all three commercial majors in Sydney and became very involved in the start up of Pay TV in Australia. But I could never leave Photography alone for long and found myself attending to many commercial and industrial assignments. Spreading myself across several roles when for a time I became quite involved in the advertising industry.

More recently I’ve done assignments for Australian magazine titles Belle, Better Homes and Gardens, Delicious, Gardening Australia, Handyman, House and Garden and Woman’s Day shooting mainly lifestyle editorial assignments including food, gardens, people, still life and interiors. Recent personal work involved spending four years on a project that combined the ancient landscape of India with some composited effects to create a series Chakras, the Deep Soul of India. Other bodies of work in this vein include Transformation, Lifeforce and Sahaja, the Natural State.

For the past 11 years, I have held an editorial role for the National Geographic Channel which of course is famous for its imagery that surrounds you at every turn. My interest in photography lies in all aspects from historical origins to technology and from composition to light and texture. My dear old mother tells me the world doesn’t need another photographer. That with every pocket and handbag containing a smart phone the digital age has turned all people into potential Ansel Adams’. However only an ‘eye’ ‘hard work’, ‘time’ and ‘perseverance’ can determine the true artist.

Artist Bio: I was born in Summit, New Jersey USA in 1951 and moved to Sydney when I was 18 in 1969. I began to make photographs when I was younger in the US. I became more serious about photography after coming to Australia. Apart for a workshop with Paul Cox, I mostly studied and taught myself. In the early 1970s, I had an exhibition in Bondi Junction and was also part of a group exhibition at the Australian Centre of Photography called Snap Shot. I had a few photographs published, including in “Camera” (Lucerne, Switzerland) I worked as a photographer for most of the 1970s. My passion for photography has never been stronger and recently, it has become important for me to share and exhibit my photographs. Artist Statement: I went for a ride one afternoon to Bundeena on my old motorcycle. I walked down to Jibbon Beach and made this photograph looking into the sun as the waves rolled onto the sand.
