THE SPOKE

Senior Mike Browne, one of the play’s leads, rehearses. “I always need to have fun and go crazy,” said Browne, who’s been performing since 6th grade. “It’s a way for me to let loose.”

Kate’s crew

The cast and crew of “Kiss Me, Kate” not only have to prepare for one play—they have to prepare for two. “Kate” is a what’s called a play within a play, where students portray actors and staff putting on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Behind the plays, the production of “Kate” involved months of preparation by not only the actors, but musicians, stage crew and tech crews. The play will be performed Feb. 25 through Feb. 28. Tickets are available on stogamusic.com. Go to stoganews.com for an extended photo gallery about the preparations for “Kiss Me, Kate.”

The music for “Kiss Me, Kate” is more jazz and classical compared to the rock style in “Footloose,” last year’s musical. Pit director Suzanne Dickinger, above, said she doesn’t prefer any one show’s music over the others. They’re “all very hard, but just different.” Junior Catherine van der List, left, is playing the viola in this year’s pit orchestra. “Playing in the pit is a whole different style of music than we normally do in school,” she said. “It’s a great time.”
