The West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service were called in to rescue the pony after he had been sedated for his lift by a local veterinarian. His owner, Claire Robinson had been unable to find the horse in thick fog and believed he may have been in the ditch for some 30 hours. She said: “He was in the field on Monday teatime when we left and Tuesday morning my friend said she had not seen him. We searched ourselves for quite a long time. I was really worried. I thought ‘he is going to be dead’ or someone has pinched him.” “The fire crews and the vet did a fantastic job. I was panicking at one point that he would not make it because he was in there so long. I reckon he was in there 36 hours plus. The weather was impossible to find him yesterday.” Station Manager Mark Allen explained the rescue process. “We set up a tripod in conjunction with the local vet who did a fantastic job. He sedated the horse and we got in and put a head collar on. We lifted the horse through the tripod system and left him in the hands of the owner and vet.” “Overnight, if the culvert had swollen with water, it could have gone over the horse’s head.” Watch a video of Frankie’s rescue at: www.facebook.com/westyorkshirefire/videos/1025738714138043

Clinton Anderson

& Ian Francis

‘Two Legends’ @ QSEC

Saturday 19th December & Sunday 20th December Clinton Anderson is returning to Australia to put on a two day training demonstration with his mentor, Ian Francis. Be prepared for 2 days of inspiration, innovation, motivation and education as Clinton and Ian present the techniques that have made them so successful. The itinerary for the 2 day demonstration is as follows:

DAY 1:

DAY 2:

• Gaining Respect and Control on the Ground with Clinton

• Trouble-Free Trailer Loading with Clinton

The best training foundation begins on the ground by teaching a horse to respect and trust you as his leader. Clinton demonstrates how fundamental groundwork exercises help to establish yourself as a trustworthy leader to your horse and give you control of his feet and mind. The skills you teach your horse on the ground carry over to training him under saddle and set the horse up for success.

• Demonstration with Ian - Educate your hands, Educate your feet Developing your awareness which in turn improves the rider’s feel, timing and co=ordination.

• Gaining control of your Horse’s Five Body Parts with Clinton No matter what discipline you do with your horse, to succeed you must be able to control his body from his nose to his tail. Clinton explains how to soften and supply a horse’s five body parts - head and neck, poll, shoulders, ribcage and hindquarters - for ultimate body control and increased performance.

• Demonstration with Ian - Building your toolbox The tools to develop a basic education which allows us to develop performance and show horses and do long term maintenance.

Clinton demonstrates how to use the Approach and Retreat Method to build a horse’s confidence to willingly loading in a trailer. You’ll learn how Clinton’s trailer loading method can be used in any situation in which a horse doesn’t want to step on or go in an object, including getting your horse to cross streams and step onto bridges.

• Demonstration with Ian Form as it relates to function A study of the shape a horse needs to be in to perform quality manoeuvres and how to set a horses form up for success.

• Problem Solving Under Saddle with Clinton From time to time, all horses misbehave under saddle. Clinton addresses common problems that are likely to crop us, such as buddy-sour horses, barn-sour horses, horses that jig, horses that buck, etc., and provides a commonsense approach to correcting each problem.

• Demonstration with Ian - Advanced Manoeuvres Bringing feel, time and balance and form and function together.

At the conclusion of both days, Clinton and Ian will be available for question and answer time and to sign autographs.

How to Check for Dehydration in Your

22

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

r Horse Horses that are exercised during hot, humid weather lose fluid and electrolytes as they sweat. In very hot weather, even a fairly short exercise period can result in a significant fluid loss. Dehydration makes the horse’s heart work harder and disrupts nerve and muscle action. In serious cases, it can lead to colic, kidney failure, and even death. Avoiding dehydration is much simpler than dealing with its consequences. During extreme summer weather, riders should try to exercise horses early in the morning, and cut back on the duration and level of performance. Horses should be cooled after exercise by hosing or sponging with cold water, and should always have free access to water in stalls or pastures. Giving an electrolyte paste or powder formulated to replace the minerals lost in sweat will help horses recover more quickly after strenuous exercise. It may take several hours or even a day or more for a heavily sweating horse to rehydrate completely. During this time, owners can use two simple tests to gauge a horse’s hydration status. The skin pinch and capillary refill tests can both indicate whether a horse is adequately hydrated. Horse owners should practice these tests when their horses are in good condition and become familiar with the results. As the horse loses water through sweating, its skin becomes less elastic. An owner can grasp a fold of skin on

the horse’s shoulder and pull it gently up into a slightly raised tent-like shape. In a horse that is somewhat dehydrated, the tented skin will remain raised for a couple of seconds before flattening out. If the horse’s skin stays tented up for four or five seconds or longer, this can be a sign of serious dehydration. This test is not completely reliable, and results will be different among horses, but an owner familiar with a particular animal’s normal state will notice the change. Capillary refill is another way to check hydration status. To do this test, the owner begins by pushing the horse’s upper lip back to expose the upper gums. The gum tissue should be pink and moist, not too pale and definitely not dark brick-red, blue, or purple. Pushing a thumb against a section of gum and then removing the pressure will reveal a pale spot where the blood has been squeezed out of the capillaries. If a horse is properly hydrated, the small blood vessels will refill quickly, usually within a second or two. Anything longer than this is a sign that the horse has lost a lot of fluid or is possibly going into shock.

KENTUCKYEQUINERESEARCH

How to Check for Dehydration in Your Horse Horses that don’t seem to be recovering from hard exercise and show signs of dehydration that do not resolve quickly should be examined by a veterinarian.

Follow these tips to ensure horses have access to water:

Water Supply Important For Horses

• Check frequently to be sure the water sources are cle properly.

Some horses visit the water trough frequently for a drink; others sip from time to time through the day; and still others enjoy splashing and playing with the water, but don’t seem to drink very much of it. In general, horses consume more water in hot weather than in cooler seasons. They also drink somewhat less when they are grazing pastures in spring and early summer because the lush grass contains a great deal of water. Horses eating hay need to consume plenty of water to ease the passage of intestinal contents and avoid impaction.

• Place one or more water sources in each stall and pa

• Offer water periodically (at least every couple of ho are exercising and travelling. Add one 80g sachet o litres of water to encourage drinking to the bottom of

• Empty, scrub, and refill troughs frequently throug maintain water quality.

• Monitor water consumption and add extra buckets if be running out of water, especially in summer months

As a starting point, the average horse drinks between 19 and 38 litres of water each day. The horse may need slightly less if it is grazing lush. He may also have less desire to drink if the water offered is extremely cold or contaminated with dirt, algae or other material. These horses run a risk of dehydration even though, at first glance, water seems to be available. Lactation, strenuous or prolonged exercise, hot weather, heavy sweating for any reason, and a diet consisting mainly of hay will greatly increase the amount of water the horse needs each day. Inadequate water intake can lead to impaction colic, so having a constant supply of clean, fresh water is important in keeping horses healthy.

KER Drink-Up™ is a scientifically formulated, highly palatable blend of ingredients that encourages horses to drink. Field studies have shown that 90 percent of horses offered Drink Up™ increased their water intake. DrinkUp™ includes KER Restore™ to help further stimulate thirst response. Encouraging your horse to Drink-Up™ enough water when travelling, competing or during an illness is crucial in preventing dehydration and associated effects on the horse. Drink-Up™ is an essential tool for encouraging your horse to drink to the bottom of the bucket.

When we talk about having independent balance, we mean that a rider is able to move with the horse, perfectly balanced at any pace, and is able to give aids effectively, due to being able to move any part of their body independently - without the fear of losing balance. Riders who have independent balance, sometimes called an ‘independent seat’ are able to just sit on the horse, while in motion, centred and balanced. These riders don’t need stirrups or reins for balance (we’ll get to the reins later!), and are able to ride without even thinking about balance. It’s similar to driving a car in some sense. When you’re learning to drive, first you need to worry about actually driving the car - learning where the controls are, and in the case of driving a manual car, how to co-ordinate your body to change gears. All this with the added skills you need to remember the road rules AND negotiate traffic. It’s hard to learn all of these new skills at once. So it is with riding. You need to learn balance, in order to stay put in the saddle. You need to learn the correct position, and the reasons for it. You need to learn the aids for different gaits, all while worrying about your seat - and to beginners, it can become very overwhelming! Most of these skills come in time. But there are riders who, although not beginners, still have not yet developed an independent seat - and to be honest, it does come with time and practice. The more hours you spend in the saddle, the more familiar you are with the movement of the horse, and the less you have to worry about staying on, and the more you can worry about your riding style, aids, and skills! There are exercises you can do in order to improve your balance and your independent seat - and under the right circumstances, these exercises can improve not only your balance, but your WHOLE effectiveness in the saddle. Having independent balance means that you will be able to easily and effectively do a number of things much better than you could before. It means that your aids are clear, effective and strong, you make the horse’s job a lot easier and pleasant, and it will give you a lot more confidence in the saddle as your skills improve. Riders who have not yet developed independent balance have the additional worry of having to think about staying on the horse - back to our ‘driving a car’ scenario, once you have control of the vehicle, driving becomes second nature, allowing you to worry about obstacles on the road. The same goes for riding.

When a rider does not have independent balance.... It honestly isn’t all that wonderful for the horse. Common riding faults of riders who don’t have independent balance include hanging on the reins, slouching in the saddle, and constantly being ‘left behind’ when the horse moves forward. All of these faults are committed by a rider at one time or another in learning to ride - that’s why the majority of us start off on understanding school ponies who are gentle and forgiving enough to tolerate such riding styles. >

RIDING However - there are riders who are out at competitions who can be seen hanging on to the reins for balance! Not only does this not teach you the strength and balance to sit correctly, it makes you slouch over and can also do a lot of damage to the horse’s mouth - whether you realise it or not. (Or should we say, whether your horse protests, or not?!) It’s important to be conscious of how your balance and your actions affect the horse. Your hands are connected to the bit through your reins -the bit - that sits in the delicate corners of your horse’s mouth. Hanging on the reins not only puts pressure on the mouth, it tells the horse to slow, and constant pulling on the reins can lead to a very unhappy horse - one that is not willing to work, or move forward under saddle. Another problem of riders who lack independent balance is constant gripping with the legs and seat - to ‘hang on’ to the horse. On some horses, this might be just fine. On a sensitive, forward moving horse, however, you might find yourself in a bit of trouble if you’re a constant ‘gripper’. Or course, it’s important to have well developed muscles - they enable you to hang on when you need to and to urge your horse forward - but constant pressure from ANY aid on the horse makes the horse less responsive to aids in the long term. It goes against the whole ‘pressure and release’ idea that when your horse does as you ask, you release the pressure. It would be like constantly applying leg the entire time you are riding, and in turn, giving the horse mixed signals.

To improve your independent balance.... Start at the very beginning. When mounted, check that you are comfortable in the saddle. Stirrups that are too long or too short change your balance on the horse. When you take your foot out of the stirrup, the irons should be near your ankles. Ensure they are the correct length and that they are even - so that your weight is distributed evenly on both sides of the horse.

RIDING

Ideally, to learn these exercises you should be lunged by an experienced instructor on a quiet horse. The best way to learn independent balance is to be lunged without reins or stirrups. It sounds daunting to the beginner, but it is important to take things at your own pace. If you are only comfortable at the walk - just walk without reins and stirrups. Feel the movement of the horse, relax your legs down and find your centre of balance. Always look ahead - in the direction you are going, and try to keep your shoulders back and your body loose. The more rigid you are in the saddle, the more likely you are to ‘hunch up’ - and when you do this, your legs come up, your shoulders come forward and you will not be balanced at all! It will take time and patience, but the more time you spend riding without stirrups or reins on the lunge, the more of a feel you’ll get for the horse’s movement, and be

30

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

able to hold yourself in the correct position as the horse moves underneath you. Bareback riding is also FANTASTIC for improving an independent seat - after all, there are no stirrups and saddle to keep you in place, so you must do it all yourself! Always wear a helmet and keep yourself safe by riding with others, under supervision, and only in an area you are comfortable with. Another exercise to improve your balance is to stand in your stirrups at the walk and trot. It can actually be quite tricky to master, and often you may be ‘left behind’ when you first attempt it. Although your position in the saddle will be almost still, you need to adjust your balance to move with the horse - and you’ll be building your seat and leg muscles at the same time!

Banjo has been shod on a regular basis for the past six months without the loss of a shoe. I’m very happy and relieved by the outcome, and I would highly recommend Equiheal Stable Ointment.”

On recommendation from another trainer, I tried Equiheal Stable Ointment. I packed the frog and sole with Equiheal Ointment and then placed a hoof boot over it for sixteen hours daily. After four days he was walking freely, and after seven days he was able to start track working. My stable rider was so amazed that she now calls it the magic ointment.”

water

The most important summer rule is to ensure your horse has a constant, clean and unlimited supply of water that is easily accessible. Even if you have automatic troughs, they must be checked on a regular basis - a minimum of once daily, preferably twice a day throughout the peak of summer. Ensure your horse has free access to the water source even if you need to supply more than one trough to make sure the horses at the lower end of the pecking order don’t have any trouble getting a drink when required. Please don’t just trust automatic waterers to work faults are possible, so even if you know they are on, they still need to be checked. The floats can become

36

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

dislodged, so check that they are fully operational by testing the refill. Algae can build up in troughs quickly, so a good scrub once a week or so (or the use of a sieve or strainer daily) will help to keep your trough clean and free of debris. If you have multiple troughs, a rotational cleaning system (one at the beginning of the week and one midweek) can save water and help ensure a constant clean supply. You also need to ensure that you provide an adequate supply of water. In warm weather, your horse may drink in excess of forty litres of water a day - so make sure the supply is plentiful! >

of acupuncture using red light, instead of needles, to stimulate recognised acupuncture points to promote healing by altering the electrical field potential in the skin. It does this in exactly the same way acupuncture needles do but without the problems associated with skin penetration. Light energy, also called photons, is transformed into electrical energy by the connective tissue collagen under the skin. This electrical energy is transmitted to the brain by the nerves.

The great advantage of the Photonic Red Light Therapy system is that it is easy to use and learn, making it an option for all horse owners to use as part of their therapy regime. In the Wozen Photonic Therapy kit, there is an assessment probe and directions on how to address the horse’s problems with formulas for

Photonic Red Light Therapy can play a very significant role in assessing and addressing colic, can assist the laminitic horse, speed wound healing, is beneficial for increasing circulation, addressing all viral diseases, tying up, increasing collagen production and reducing pain.

If your horse doesn’t have a shelter in his paddock, or adequate tree coverage, you might consider putting up some shadecloth in order to offer him some protection from the heat. Choose a cloth with a high UV rating and ensure it is placed securely in a position that allows for maximum shad during the peak times of day between 11am and 3pm. Any shelter your have or that you provide needs to be roomy enough to accommodate all of the horses in the paddock.

Freeze ice cream containers full of water to put in your trough on hot days!

If you’re planning to take a trip with your horse over the holidays - or if you’re attending a show, take precautions and plan your trip if it’s going to be hot. Always take additional water with you - some horses are fussy and prefer water from home. A reserve supply of water in the float or car is always a good idea just in case you break down or must stop on the way. It can get very hot inside a float especially if it’s not well ventilated, or if it’s a hot still day. On hot days, avoid travelling during peak times (when the sun is at it’s hottest) - instead, plan to leave early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it is not as hot. Consider taking some electrolytes with you (or KER’s Drink UpTM)to encourage your horse to consume adequate amounts of water. >

f ire plans

Particularly if you live in a high risk bushfire area - and even if you don’t - have a plan in place to action at the threat of fire. If you plan to leave with your horses and move them to a lower risk area, leave early. Have a back up plan in case you’re not able to get them out beforehand. On days of severe risk, check to see if horses can be moved to nearby showgrounds, saleyards, racetracks or Pony Club grounds.

Horses are best left naked, as they are less likely to catch themselves on snags. Nylon and synthetic fibres will melt and can cause burns to the skin, so do not leave fly veils, nylon halters or synthetic rugs on your horses. It is preferable to also remove halters, although if your horse is very difficult to catch, a leather halter is the best option if you must leave one on. Livestock grease markers can be used to write your phone number on your horses rump for identification following the fire. You have the best chance of being reunited with your horse if you can leave some form of identification on him. Before summer, clear your paddocks of debris and fuel for fire - remove sticks and branches within a 20-30m radius of buildings. Reduce your fire risk and stay vigilant!

Break out the repellant to keep flies and biting insects at bay over the Summer months. If you choose to apply a fly repellant product to your horse, always apply to your hand before brushing it on to your horse - and NEVER apply sprays directly to the horse’s face. Fly veils should be checked regularly and removed daily to ensure nothing is between the veil and the horse’s face. Check that your horse’s flyveil is fitted correctly and that it does not rub your horse’s face. If your horse has a flyveil with a nose flap, ensure it is stiff and that it can not interfere with his breathing in any way. Clean flyveils regularly to ensure that there is no mud or dirt lodged in the gaps in the mesh. If flies particularly bother your horse, consider investing in a mesh fly sheet. These breathable, light-weight mesh rugs can cover the majority of the horse’s body and will reduce irritation from flies and biting insects.

Just as some of us burn to a crisp in the sun - do too do horses with white markings. Sun protection is just as important for your horse as it is for you - so always have some high quality (30+ SPF) sunscreen on hand at all times. Some commercially available sunscreen made specifically for horses are more likely to last longer on your horse than sunscreen for humans - where it is often necessary to re-apply every few hours. Coloured creams are great too - not only can you choose a fashionably vibrant colour, but it also gives you an indicator of how much is left on and when you should re-apply!

Check feed before feeding! Any moisture can cause feed to go bad quickly when it’s hot.

heat stress

Heat stress and dehydration in horses can occur easily when it’s hot, and every horse owner should be mindful of the signs of heat stress, and preventative measures that can be taken in order to avoid it.

know how to check for dehydration

The easiest way is the ‘pinch test’. Grab some loose skin on the horse’s neck and release it. If the skin ‘tents’, or takes time to resume it’s usual position, the horse is likely to be dehydrated. In horses who are well hydrated, you will see the skin bounce back to it’s original position almost immediately. See the ‘How to check for dehydration in your horse’ article by Kentucky Equine Research (page 22 in this issue) for more information.

know your horse s vital signs

'

A horse’s temperature should be between 37.5˚C-38.5˚C. Pulse at rest should be between 35-40 beats per minute. In a horse at rest, a pulse rate over 60 beats per minute over an extended period of time can indicate that there may be a problem. A horse’s respiration rate at rest should be around 8-20 breaths per minute. Increased respiration rates at rest can be indicative of pain, infection - or excitement. In any case, if vitals are not within the normal range, consult your vet for further advice.

symptoms of heat stress

Profuse sweating (or NO sweating at all), profuse breathing, elevated heart rate and elevated temperature.

if you suspect heat stress

Cool the horse down immediately - hose him with cold water and get him into the shade. Encourage the horse to drink cool water - small amounts frequently. Consult your vet for advice.

FAQ

Laminitis? Laminae? What are those? Founder is also known as laminitis - so what is it? Founder is usually simply associated with ponies that are too fat. Almost every horse person will have seen at riding schools or agistments their ‘skinny’ yard or paddock for the chubbier horses. Some ponies find grass, particularly in spring, too much to resist! Founder itself is a condition where the laminae of the hoof becomes inflamed, and the laminae is weakened and damaged. Horses with this condition find walking and even standing very painful!

The severity of founder can vary from mild - which can go unnoticed, to very severe - where the horse cannot stand, or bare it’s own body weight. In some cases, the coffin bone can move deeper into the hoof, as the laminae can no longer support it, This makes for a very lame, sore horse with a serious problem. Once this happens, the blood vessels are literally squashed, and further problems ensue. Chronic founder refers to horses who continually founder and suffer from this condition. >

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com 59

HORSECARE

FOUNDER

FAQ

Their hooves distort over time, making ‘rings’ visible on the surface of the hoof. They usually have flat soled hooves, overgrown heels, long toes, and may require corrective shoeing. These horses also can be prone to abscesses. In some cases, founder cannot be stopped, but it can be controlled with good management. The laminae is a series of interlocking bone and hoof, forming ridge type structures. There are blood vessels running through it, and it is what holds the pedal bone from the wall of the hoof. It is said to be like a zip in formation, but can be damaged when excessive stress is placed on it. ‘Founder’ or ‘laminitis’ is simply the inflammation of the laminae, which is a very serious and very painful condition! Founder is not contagious, it is brought on by conditions and management. In turn, it can be controlled by the same factors.

WHAT CAUSES FOUNDER? In some cases, the cause will be unknown. The most commonly associated cause with founder is excessive consumption of too much rich feed, combined with little or no exercise. Studies are still being conducted as to what exactly causes the condition - some other causes can include severe strain on the hoof, and a reduction in blood flow to the hoof. This reduction in the blood flow can cause the tissues to die off, and swelling of the laminae. Founder can also be associated with other medical problems - including internal inflammations, diarrhoea, bacterial infections and any toxic substance in the bloodstream. Horses suffering these problems may be prone to founder. Founder has also been known to occur when a horse is worked on a hard surface without shoes for a prolonged period (very strenuous work), when hooves are trimmed incorrectly, and in severe reactions to certain medications.

60

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms will depend on the severity of the condition. Sometimes, ponies are only slightly lame at the trot. Some ponies will not move, and others, with severe cases will not stand. The ‘founder stance’ is also typical of ponies with founder, and is a sure fire indication that the pony has the condition. This stance is the shifting of the body weight off the fore legs, which are most commonly the worst affected areas. 60% of the horse’s weight is carried on the forelegs, and 40% on the hind legs, so it is no wonder that the front hooves are effected more severely. Most commonly, horses are only effected in the forelegs, but it is also possible for horses to develop the condition in one leg, or the hind legs, it depends on what has caused the founder. A change in gait can also be a sign of mild laminitis, as the horse will avoid putting pressure on the toes, and will stand and walk heel first. Horses with laminitis also have an elevated pulse which can be felt just above the bulbs of the heels. Their hooves will also feel hot for long periods of time.

FOUNDER DREADED ONLY BY PONY OWNERS.... OR IS IT? Founder has been proven to occur in horses, not just the small overfed pony, although undoubtedly this case is very common. Horses can suffer from the dietary inflicted laminitis, but most commonly poor farriery and toxemia are the culprits. Mares who retain the afterbirth, or parts of afterbirth, after foaling are at a high risk of laminitis, and the placenta should always be inspected to check that it is complete. Benign cancers in older horses can increase the risks of laminitis, and horses with hormone flow problems are also susceptible.

HORSECARE

FOUNDER

FAQ

ASSISTING A LAMINITIC HORSE There are various treatments for laminitis depending on what has caused it in the first place. The first steps include making the horse as comfortable as possible, decreasing the inflammation of the laminae and to improve the blood flow to the area. The cause should be determined if possible, to ensure preventative measures can be taken.

IF YOU THINK YOUR HORSE HAS FOUNDERED Call your vet! It is best to get a vet to come out and see your horse, so you know exactly what you’re dealing with, no matter how mild the condition may be. Founder is not a ‘wait and see’ condition - it needs monitoring and treatment from day one. In the immediate situation, lead your horse gently to a stable or enclosed area. If the horse is in severe pain, keep movement to a minimum, and use a float to transport the horse. even if the distance is relatively short. Don’t feed the horse or administer any drugs to the horse, unless under veterinary instruction! Your vet can help you determine the cause, and prevent the condition worsening. You should also have discussions with your farrier to see if he can make your horse more comfortable. If possible, ask your vet and farrier to discuss the options with you a team approach will work well, as conflicting advice regarding the treatment of your horse will get you nowhere. “When treating founder, the first steps include making the horse as comfortable as possible, decreasing the inflammation of the laminae and improving blood flow to the area...” Owners of a horse with founder, or a horse who is prone to founder should seek the advice of their vet and farrier for specified treatment options. It is unfortunate that some horses have to be put down to due on-going bouts or very severe founder. In these cases, the laminae cannot cope with the stress of the

62

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

weight of the horse, and will not heal. As always, a regular trim and farrier attention will help, possibly along with some supplements to improve growth and encourage healthier hooves.

“It is unfortunate that some horses have to be put down to due on-going bouts or very severe founder...” Horses with chronic founder should also have their hooves pressure tested, as abscesses are common and need to be attended to. Abscesses should be treated, the hoof soaked and bandaged daily to assist healing. Preferably, horses with severe founder should be stabled on soft bedding, have their feed restricted, shoes removed, and be checked constantly. Other treatment options are available, but the care of your horse should be left in the hands of your vet and farrier - founder cannot go untreated. If your horse is founder prone, your vet may be able to recommend some management changes to assist your pony, and prevent further bouts of the condition.

PRACTICAL PREVENTION Prevention of any medical problem is so important. If taking a minute out of your riding time puts a stop to a potential condition, it is well worth it. Founder prevention is just common sense. Doing all you can for the health and well being of your horse in itself will prevent many problems from occurring. Founder can be prevented simply by watching the weight of your horse or pony. Don’t allow your horse to become overweight - balance his feed intake and exercise to keep him fit. When spring grass grows rich and lush, monitor your horse’s condition, and if necessary, replace grain in the diet for hay or a bulk feed. Make sure your grain is kept well out of reach of hungry horses, keep your horse’s hooves trimmed, and ask your farrier and vet about any concerns you may have.

Training horses to tie up confidently and safely

T

he Idolo Tether Tie – a tool to help train horses to tie up confidently and safely – is now available in Australia exclusively through Grosvenor Park Products. Invented by British horse rider and trainer, Roy French, the Idolo Tether Tie uses pressure and release, the foundation of all good horse training. It is designed for use with a longer length lead rope. If spooked, the horse can pull back without being panicked by too much pressure around the head, and stay safely connected to the securing ring. As he pulls back, the rope passes over the central friction bar and the horse feels a gentle, steady pressure. He realises this pressure is nothing to be afraid of, relaxes, stops and takes a step forward, releasing the pressure and rewarding him for staying calm. This instils confidence and the horse gradually learns there is no need to panic.

“The Idolo Tether Tie uses pressure and release, the foundation of all good horse training.“

“If spooked, the horse can pull back without being panicked by too much pressure around the head, and stay safely connected to the securing ring. As he pulls back, the rope passes over the central friction bar and the horse feels a gentle, steady pressure. He realises this pressure is nothing to be afraid of, relaxes, stops and takes a step forward, releasing the pressure and rewarding him for staying calm. This instils confidence and the horse gradually learns there is no need to panic.” This tool can be used anywhere you need to tie your horse, and is ideal for use with the farrier or vet. Manufactured in Great Britain from high-grade industrial nylon, it is strong and durable, reduces head collar and rope breakages and, best of all, eliminates the temptation to use baler twine. Baler twine was once widely used to tether horses but it is unreliable – new baler twine frequently doesn’t break when

needed, while worn baler twine that has been sitting in the sun for months breaks too easily. We’ve heard horrifying tales of horses being injured due to incorrect tethering, many because the baler twine didn’t break. Baler twine used to be made of sisal and would break relatively easily. These days it is made of tough nylon, usually with a four-ton breaking strain, which is far too strong for tethering a horse.

SAFE EQUINENEWS TETHERING

Introducing

Idolo Tether Tie

“Baler twine was once break when needed, wh

Training horses to tie up confidently and safely One horse-owner said she realised modern baler twine was not suitable for tying horses when her mare pulled back, the twine didn’t break, the stable wall gave way and the mare took off with the stable wall dragging behind her. She galloped madly trying to get away from it until she double barrelled it and the clip on the leadrope broke – the baler twine, however, didn’t. At the other end of the spectrum, baler twine that is weak can teach a horse that jerking his head back and snapping the twine will leave him loose and free to take off. Grosvenor Park Products is well known for having introduced two types of breakpoint safety tether to Australia: the Equitie and the V-tie. Both are excellent products and far safer than baler twine. However, in response to demand from customers the company searched for a product specifically designed to assist in training youngsters to tie up calmly and to re-train horses who had learned to pull back, a product that would also prevent horses breaking free. Alex from Grosvenor Park Products said, ‘We had been on the lookout for a product like this for years, and the Idolo Tether Tie meets all our various requirements. What is more, it has a lighter and heavier pressure setting, achieved by simply reversing the tether tie, which allows you to tailor the product to your horse and the situation.’ Experts will tell you that in order to train a horse to tie up safely, you need to teach your horse to yield to pressure and take a step forwards if he feels the rope tighten, rather than leap backwards. Plenty of us have witnessed a horse tethered who pulls back when he feels spooked, then feels trapped as the head collar tightens, panics and tries to break free. The Idolo Tether Tie not only avoids that scenario, it uses pressure and release to train your horse the right behaviour.

What does it do? Equinade Mighty Bright is an amazing rinse that will whiten, brighten and remove stains from tails, manes & coats. It is designed to remove yellow tinges and

stubborn stains without damaging the hair. Equinade Mighty Bright can also be used to reduce the intensity of brassy, red tones and soften harsh grey tones.

For Magic Results!

How do you use it?

Before

colour they are!

After

It is so easy to use! Shampoo and condition as usual, then dilute Equinade Showsilk Mighty Bright in a bucket with water and pour onto the coat, tail or mane. No rinsing is required! Leave in for long-lasting effects.

Handy Hint

The best results occur when the hair turns slightly purple when wet. As the hair dries, the purple will fade and maximum brightness will be achieved!

HORSEMANSHIP >> HORSEMANSHIP

What impact are you really having on your horse?

An interesting subject, and one that I cover in my lessons and clinics – but how much do our moods affect our horses ?

At the recent confidence clinic we spent a lot of time on our self awareness – our anxiety levels, how we were feeling, and how to adjust our state into one of calm and quietness. We had many interesting moments at the camp – but one for me stands out. It was day 1 and we had headed into the arena after some group work, and we were working on simply ‘parking’ our horses. When the participants, horses and coaches first arrived in the arena there was a level of energy – nervousness, excitement, anxiety in both the owners and horses alike – in addition the grounds were about 4 inches deep in lush grass that the horses were extremely interested in. We spent time grounding ourselves – focusing on our breathing, clearing our minds (a standing meditation if you like), and simply sending a ‘bump’ down the line when our horses tried to eat. Then pure magic happened. The horses went from fidgeting, walking, eating, pulling, bumping into their owners, and the owners went from fidgeting, micro managing, to an amazing 2 full minutes (yes I was timing it) to complete peace. The horses, the owners came to a place of pure in the moment, calm, confident, bliss. Without being there it is hard to understand the profoundness of this moment. Im not even sure that all the participants understood the significance of the experience, but what had happened was that all of the horses, in that moment, tapped into their owners calm, quiet demeanours and had realised that they were ‘ok’. The very thing we seek from our equine relationships. So, to answer the question I posed – we have a massive impact on our horses, all the time. From the time they are born our horses instinctually read the ‘state’ of the herd or the group that they are in – if the group is excited – then we are all excited, if the group is frightened, then it pays to be frightened – if you are not then evolution has had a way of reducing these undesirable traits.

Ask Tanja...

So in the journey of horsemanship or simply owning horses, our goal is to ‘be the boss, the alpha, the leader, the confidant. The one that our horse looks to in times of need – however we don’t usually practice an awareness of self. We expect, or we want, our horses to be calm, confident and willing, and yet we arrive at the paddock after a stressful day at work or school, after a fight with our partner, or when we are tired and cranky, and we expect them to ‘ignore that bit’. In fact most of the time we don’t even realise that cause and effect is happening right under our noses. We think more like this “oh great I had a fight with my partner and now my horse is nervous and spooky (or acting out), that would be right its ‘one of those days’. Bullshit. The reason we have ‘one of those days’ is because we allow the first thing that happens in the morning, to dictate to us what the rest of the day is going to be like, and we carry that baggage (anger, anxiety, helplessness) to each encounter that we have that day (both human and animal) and then each encounter is tainted. I’m not saying we need to go through life as emotional flatliners not responding to the things that happen around us – but what I am saying is we need to be mature enough to think “that fight with my partner this morning has really set me off – i need to calm down and reset before I work with my horse today” or whatever it might be. We need to own our state, and change it if it needs changing – we have external influences every day that can change our state, our horses do not understand this. If we want his respect we need to behave like we deserve it – by being consistent, confident and calm. Food for thought!

Have you got a question you’d like to ask Tanja about your horse? Send your question to tanjajkraus@gmail.com with ‘Ask Tanja’ in the subject line - and check future issues of The Stable for Tanja’s responses!

TheTailEnd brought to you by...

MARES & PMS You know the drill. It's a beautiful day. The sun is shining, birds are singing, a cool breeze blows gently over the plentiful grass in your paddock - it's the perfect day for a lovely trail ride. You grab your halter and a carrot, and take the walk to catch your mare. You call her and see her grazing peacefully on the other side of the paddock. She hears you call, glances up to see you approaching, and instead of her usual welcoming greeting, she quickly buries her head back into the patch of sweet grass she was busily consuming.

hole to China, kicking dust up all over the yard.

From there, it’s a case of bad to worse. Not only does she not want to be caught, she is also convinced that the gelding next door is actually a stallion, and that she must show off in order to gain his attention. While you reflect on the preceding half hour of herding her into the corner of the paddock in order to actually put the damn headcollar on, she is busy prancing on the tips of her toes, head raised high up in the air, carrying on like a pork chop as you lead her to be groomed and saddled.

At the sight of the saddle her ears pin flat back and as you tighten the girth, she stamps and kicks the air, her nostrils curled up in distaste as only a mare with PMS can do.

She shies at a plastic bag blowing across the driveway so violently that you can feel every muscle in your shoulder strain, and while you retrieve your grooming kit, she is busily digging a

While you remove her new coating of dirt, she proceeds to bite and chew on the pole to which she is tethered, and God forbid you get too close to the girth with the soft body brush you are using; lest the flying gnashers catch you in the arm.

You fasten your helmet, lead her out and jump on board, only to have the horror ride from hell; pig rooting all the way down the long side, a nice buck on the transition from trot to canter, and tailswishing nappy mare attitude from go to woah. With the ride over, you cool her out with a nice relaxing walk around the paddock - however she suddenly remembers her ‘stallion’ friend, and instead of a peaceful cool down, you are now sitting on what feels to be some kind of jet

SPOTLIGHT propelled rocket with maximum impulsion and elevation. Where was this when you were riding your last dressage test? With a cool down that wasn’t so much of a success, you dismount and attempt a nice sedate walk, only to find that she’s now worked herself up into a foamy mess, and so needs a wash.

While you hose her legs and remove the sweat from her coat, she kicks out at the hose and tries her best to swat you in the face with rapid and lethal tail swishing. Finally cooled out, you pop her back in her stall and prepare her evening meal while she again resumes her excavation of the yard, once dinner is served, hooves and her feed bucket are flying, despite the fact that she is chowing down like she has never been fed before in her life. Your shoulders get another work out on the walk back to her paddock, and you’re flattened by 500kg of Thoroughbred as you lead her back through the gate. It’s ok, you didn’t need those ribs anyway.

Our advice? At the first sign of PMS, down tools. Put the halter back in the tack room and forget it!
