EQUINENEWS THREE SWISS JUMPING HORSES TEST POSITIVE TO PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES
The FEI has announced that three Swiss Jumping horses have tested positive for prohibited substances. Samples taken at the CSIO5* at La Baule (FRA) from the horses Nino des Buissonnets and Nasa, both ridden by Steve Guerdat (SUI) have returned positive for the Banned Substances Codeine and Oripavine, and the Controlled Medication substance Morphine. Samples taken at the CSIOY (Young Riders) in Deauville (FRA) on 8 May from the horse Charivari KG (FEI ID 102ZB26), ridden by Alessandra Bichsel, have returned positive for the Banned Substances Codeine and Oripavine, and the Controlled Medication substance Morphine. Under the FEI’s Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (EADCMRs), a mandatory provisional suspension is imposed on the athlete in the event of a Banned Substance positive prior to the opportunity for a full hearing. Similarly, under the EADCMRs, a horse testing positive to a Banned Substance is provisionally suspended for two months. As a result, Steve Guerdat and Alessandra Bichsel have both been provisionally suspended from the day of notification (20 July 2015), and the three horses have been provisionally suspended for two months. The FEI offers the athlete, referred to in the rules as the Person Responsible (PR), and the horse owner the opportunity for a preliminary hearing before the FEI Tribunal to request the lifting of the provisional suspensions. “The presence in all these samples of Oripavine, which is not found in any veterinary products, suggests that this could be contamination, but obviously we still have to follow standard procedure”, FEI Secretary General Sabrina Zeender said. “The combination of Oripavine, Morphine and Codeine have frequently been seen in contamination cases from other equestrian sport regulators, and the FEI already has three outstanding cases from 2014 involving Oripavine and Morphine in which we proactively sought the lifting of the provisional suspensions. As the regulator of international equestrian sport, we have to balance fairness to the athletes with our dual role of protecting horse welfare and maintaining a level playing field.”

The FEI has three ongoing 2014 cases which also involve Oripavine and Morphine*. Requests for the lifting of the provisional suspension in each case were originally denied by the Tribunal, but sufficient evidence was subsequently gathered to show that all three cases were highly likely to involve contamination and the FEI promptly sought the lifting of the provisional suspensions. All three provisional suspensions were simultaneously lifted by the FEI Tribunal on 19 December 2014. Oripavine is an opioid analgesic that is not used clinically due to its very narrow therapeutic margin and extremely high toxicity levels. Oripavine positives are frequently the result of poppy seed ingestion. Codeine and Morphine, both of which are found in poppy seeds, are also analgesics. Due to increasing evidence of poppy seed contamination resulting in positives, the FEI downgraded Morphine from a Banned Substance to Controlled Medication in 2013. Among a number of proposed changes to the Equine Prohibited Substances List due to come into effect on 1 January 2016, Codeine is listed for a similar downgrading to Controlled Medication.

MICHAEL JUNG
BACK ON TOP! Michael Jung (GER) is back as world Eventing number one after his brilliant third-place finish with La Biosthetique Sam FBW at last month’s Luhmühlen CCI4* (GER) presented by DHL, fifth leg of the FEI Classics™.
SWITCH BACK
Jung (32) jumped to the top of the FEI World Eventing Rankings in May for the first time in his career, breaking the one-year reign of William Fox-Pitt (GBR). Fox-Pitt then toppled Jung in June to take back his lead. Now Jung, the first Eventing athlete to hold the European, world and Olympic titles simultaneously in 2012 after scoring individual and team gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Fox-Pitt, the multiple Olympic, World and European medallist, have switched places yet again!
MICHAEL JUNG (GER) & LA BIOSTHETIQUE SAM PHOTO: FEI/EVENTING PHOTO
Jung now has a 17-point lead over Fox-Pitt (591 points), with New Zealand’s Jonelle Price up into third (520 points). Germany’s Ingrid Klimke – winner at Luhmühlen and current leader of the FEI Classics™ series - has also moved up and is now in fourth (504 points). Australia’s Stuart Tinney has leapt into the top 10 and is now in ninth from 17th in the FEI World Eventing Rankings.
ABOUT MICHAEL JUNG Jung started riding aged six and came to prominence after making his international début in 2009, when he won the Luhmühlen CCI4* on home-turf in Germany, the FEI World Cup™ Eventing final in Strzegom (POL) and an individual European bronze medal in Fontainebleau (FRA). These successes all came with La Biosthetique Sam FBW, the horse that Jung rode to individual gold at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Kentucky (USA) in 2010 and double gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Jung was also part of Germany’s golden team at last year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Normandy (FRA), where he finished second behind his compatriot Sandra Auffarth in the individual rankings. Jung has also claimed team and individual gold at the last two FEI European Championships (2011 and 2013). Now, just over three months away from the much-awaited Longines FEI European Eventing Championships 2015 at Blair Castle in the Scottish Highlands (10-13 September), he will preparing to defend his title.

PAN AMERICAN GAMES - TORONTO: DRESSAGE DOUBLE-GOLD AND INDIVIDUAL SILVER FOR USA
A

merica’s Steffen Peters and Laura Graves added individual gold and silver to the team title secured on Sunday at the PanAmerican Games 2015 in Toronto, Canada where the host nation’s Chris von Martels scooped individual bronze this afternoon. The result is a sensational fifth consecutive Pan-American team victory for the Americans, bringing their tally to eight team and nine individual Dressage titles in the 64year history of the event, and earning a team berth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. And it was a back-to-back double of individual gold for Peters who, although he didn’t surpass the PanAmerican Games record score of 80.132 which he set at Guadalajara in Mexico four years ago with Weltino’s Magic, came close when posting 80.075 for today’s individual win with Legolas.
TEAM COMPETITION The Americans took the lead from the outset of the team competition and held on for gold, but the host Canadians chased them all the way to the line to claim silver, while Brazil just pipped Mexico for the bronze. Results were combined from two days of mixed Small and Big Tour competition that began with Prix St George and Grand Prix last Saturday (11 July), and only teams with Grand Prix combinations were eligible for the single Olympic berth on offer so only USA, Canada, Mexico and Brazil were in that race. US stalwart, Steffen Peters, posted the biggest Grand Prix score of the day with Legolas at 77.240, and when added to Laura Graves’ 75.080 with Verdades, and Kimberly Herslow’s 75.184 in the Prix St George the firstday US tally was 230.504. Three scores from each team were taken into account, so Sabine Schut-Kery and Sanceo’s 71.790 in the the Prix St George was the team discard. However the Canadians were hot on their heels when Brittany Fraser and All In scored 76.105 and Chris Von Martels and Zilverstar posted 75.026. Of the Canadian Big Tour pairs it was Belinda Trussell and Anton who scored highest with 74.949, Megan Lane and Caravella awarded 72.400 for the discard. And going into Sunday’s decider Canada trailed the USA by just 4.433 points
while the three-member Mexican side of Jesus Palacios (Wizard Banamex), Jose Padilla (Donnersberg) and Bernadette Pujals (Heslegaards Rolex) lay only 0.203 points ahead of Brazil’s Joao Paulo Dos Santos (Veleiro do Top), Sarah Waddell (Donelly 3), Joao Victor Marcari Oliva (Xama dos Pinhais) and Leandro Aparecido da Silva (D Caprio).
PLENTY OF PRESSURE There was plenty of pressure as the action got underway on Sunday in the Intermediare 1 and FEI Grand Prix Special, but the Americans stood firm, bolstered by personal-best scores from both Graves in the Special and Herslow in the Intermediare 1, and backed up by Peters‘ 72.667 while Schut-Kery posted 73.533. Their final tally of 460.506 moved them just over 5.5 points ahead of the Canadians to secure the gold at the end of the day, while the Brazilians leap-frogged the Mexicans for the bronze. US Chef d’Equipe, Robert Dover, said his team’s great result “showed that our Small Tour horses are beautifully trained and our Big Tour combinations showed why they are ranked seventh and eighth in the world right now. What could be better for a Chef d’Equipe than to bring a a team and have them earn personal bests at a very important moment. Having earned qualification for the Olympic Games, it allows us to now focus and put our energy into preparing for Rio (2016 Olympic Games).” Graves, whose meteoric rise to prominence only began in the lead-up to last summer’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy where she sensationally finished tenth individually with Verdades, was delighted with her personal-best 77.177 in the Grand Prix Special. “He was amazing out there, really on again today!” she said of her horse. “He loves Toronto!” Graves and Verdades and Peters and Legolas were key players in the US team that lined up fourth in Normandy behind the three European powerhouses of Germany, Great Britain and The Netherlands who earned the three Olympic berths on offer there.
PAID TRIBUTE Steffen Peters paid tribute to the silver medallists. “The Canadians did a wonderful job. They rode extremely well and gave us quite the run - it wasn’t easy!” he said. Canada’s Belinda Trussell, an Olympian and three-

SILVER Verdades (Laura Graves) USA 79.825 BRONZE Zilverstar (Chris von Martels) CAN 79.500
PAN AMERICAN GAMES - TORONTO: DRESSAGE DOUBLE-GOLD AND INDIVIDUAL SILVER FOR USA time competitor at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ who was lining out in her first Pan American Games said, after scoring 76.578 in the Grand Prix Special, “I think, for Canada, that this Games has pushed us to a new level. To be coming away (from the team event) with nothing below 70 per cent, and highlights of 76 per cent, has never been done. It’s really exciting for Canada. We are so pumped as a nation, and pumped to go forward to the next Games. We are international contenders - there is huge excitement!” she added.
INDIVIDUAL MEDALS And the excitement continued today when a total of 21 horse-and-rider combinations lined out to contest the individual medals. Of these, 17 performed Intermediare 1, while the final four Big Tour partnerships performed the Freestyle. With just six left to go, von Martels and Zilverstar rocketed to the top of the leaderboard with a percentage score of 79.500 for his Intermediare test. Judge at M, Great Britain’s Stephen Clarke, awarded 81.500 and at judge at H, America’s Lilo Fore, awarded 80.750, and all five Ground Jury members put the Canadian temporarily into first place. The 32-year-old rider from Ontario held on to the advantage until overtaken by Peters and Legolas who posted the first, and only, over80 per cent score when third-last into the arena. Fore, Clarke and Ground Jury President Elizabeth McMullan chose this pair for the no. 1 spot this time around, setting the new target at 80.075. And when, last to go, 27-year-old Graves and Verdades collected 79.825 they scooped silver
and pinned von Martels and Zilverstar back to bronze. It was an extremely close-fought affair, with only 0.575 separating the three medal-winners. After Sunday’s Grand Prix Special, Peters admitted to having some issues in the execution of his test, but today he put all that behind him and came out once again with all guns blazing. “I’m still on cloud nine!” he said, shortly after the prizegiving.
A GOOD JOB “On Sunday Legolas did a good job but I didn’t do my best riding job, so I wanted to prove today that Legolas deserves to be one of top horses in the world. I gave it every bit of my strength and he produced a wonderful clean test. And on top of that he allowed me to be within a tenth of a second to the music so we had high artistic scores” he explained. “This season we have had a few ups and downs, so to finish so strong in the last test of the season - I can hardly describe how I feel right now!” he added. Asked about team-mate Laura Graves’ close silver-medal finish, Peters continued, “I knew before the competition today that it would be awfully close. I saw her doing a beautiful clean test, so the tension to last second today was quite something. I have to admit I got very emotional when Legolas was called out the winner!” And the 50-year-old rider was quick to refer back to his US team-mates and the success they have achieved over the last few days. “Let’s not forget that every single rider, including the fourth horse contributed to the team gold medal. There was a combination of
drop scores, so everyone did their job, and it is a fantastic group of people - all good-hearted athletes. It’s quite something to win with wonderful friends you almost have to call family!” he said.
FACTS & FIGURES Victory in the team competition has secured a qualifying spot for the USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was another record-breaking performance from the Americans who already held the record for 4 consecutive team victories, and have now increased that to 5. 16 nations were represented in Dressage at the 17th PanAmerican Games while 10 countries fielded teams. A total of 21 horse-and-rider combinations competed for the individual medals. The list of teams so far qualified in Dressage for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games now includes, Brazil (automatic qualification), Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Australia (best ranked team from Olympic Group F or G at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy), and USA (single qualifier from Pan-American Games 2015 in Toronto, Canada). The next major Olympic qualification opportunity is at the forthcoming FEI European Championships in Aachen, Germany, 11-23 August 2015, where 3 further places are on offer.

Testimonials Equiheal products are used and recommended by equine veterinarians, farriers & leading trainers. “I have used Equiheal Stable Ointment for treating horses with a variety of skin and hoof disorders. I have found it to be a very effective product, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone thinking of using it for any of the following skin or hoof disorders. Greasy Heel, Non-specific Dermatitis, Thrush, Seedy Toe, Open Hoof Abscess, Hoof Soreness, Cuts and Abrasions.”
Toby Ryan, BSC BVMS - Equine Veterinarian Surgeon “We at Griffiths Racing have been using Equiheal products for several months. Not only have we successfully treated Greasy Heel but have used it as a general stable treatment for most other ailments including wither sores, skin conditions and other abrasions. Recently we have been using the Hoof & Sole product which has also had positive results. This year has seen an increase in hoof related conditions due largely to the wet conditions Victorians are experiencing. I have used both products and they have greatly minimized the amount of hoof and sole issues we were getting prior to introducing the product. I can highly recommend it to all the equine industry.”
Robbie Griffiths Racing Stables, Victoria Equestrian enthusiast Angela Woodacre had an ongoing problem with her horse Banjo, and had tried many products without success until her farrier suggested trying Equiheal Stable Ointment. This is what she had to say after her horse could not hold a shoe on for the past seven years due to soft soles and walls in all four of her horses hooves. “I applied Equiheal Stable Ointment daily into the souls and walls, combined with an oral hoof supplement. Banjo has been shod on a regular basis for the past six months without the loss of a shoe. I’m very happy and relieved by the outcome, and I would highly recommend Equiheal Stable Ointment.”
Angela Woodacre, Toodyay WA
Anthony Adams, Broken Hill NSW “I had a horse that was suffering from soft and thin sole. A trainer of forty years said it was the worst soft sole he had ever seen. On recommendation from another trainer, I tried Equiheal Stable Ointment. I packed the frog and sole with Equiheal Ointment and then placed a hoof boot over it for sixteen hours daily. After four days he was walking freely, and after seven days he was able to start track working. My stable rider was so amazed that she now calls it the magic ointment.”

Harrie Smolders (NED) riding “Emnerald” in the Furussiya FEI Nations Cup Jumping™ at Falsterbro he Dutch showed precisely why they are the reigning World and defending Furusiyya champions when soaring to victory at the sixth leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Europe Division 1 League in Falsterbo, Sweden today. It took just three of the four members of Rob Ehrens’ side to clinch it when Harrie Smolders, Maikel van der Vleuten and Leopold Van Asten all jumped double-clear, leaving anchorman Gerco Schroder with nothing to do for the entire afternoon but to watch from the sidelines.
There were five nations chasing qualifying points for the Furusiyya 2015 Final in Barcelona in September and it seemed that the Germans, who were also in the hunt, might force the eventual winners into a third-round jump-off. But in the end they had to settle for joint-runner-up spot along with their hosts from Sweden, while Switzerland slotted into fourth ahead of Spain in fifth and USA in sixth place. The extraordinary run of Di Lampard’s British side ground to halt today, when the country that has enjoyed three victories so far this season lined up seventh despite a fantastic double-clear from anchorman Michael Whitaker. Team Poland finished last, hampered by a fall for anchor partnership Piotr Morsztyn and Osadkowski van Halen at the pentultimate oxer in the opening round.
JUMPED CLEAR It appeared that course designer Christian Wiegand from Germany had not over-taxed them when 13 horse-andrider combinations jumped clear in the first round. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of drama, with American chances taking an early hammering when Kirsten Coes’ stallion, Czardas, pulled out at the open water at fence eight before taking it on at his second attempt. And the British also got off to a disappointing start when William Funnell’s stallion, Billy Congo, was eliminated for throwing in the towel at the Longines triple combination. This fence was followed by a water-tray oxer that regularly hit the

dirt, while the one-stride double at fence seven also took its toll. The narrow vertical that followed the open water took some riding for those with onward-bound horses, but the final line of oxer to vertical at fences 11 and 12 proved particularly influential. There was another dramatic moment in the second round when Spain’s Alberto Marquez Galobardes was forced to retire after his left rein broke on landing over the second fence with Belcanto Z. However his team fought on to take some much-sought-after last qualifying points at the end of the day.
ZERO SCORE The real battle was played out by the other four pointschasing countries, the Dutch and Germans neck-andneck on a zero score at the halfway stage followed by the Swedes and Swiss with four apiece. Like Dutch Chef d’Equipe, Rob Ehrens, Otto Becker hadn’t held back on his selection for the German side, and when Patrick Stuhylmeyer’s Lacan hit the middle element
FURUSIYYA FEI NATIONS CUP™:
FLAWLESS DUTCH SCOOP FURUSIYYA VICTORY AT FALSTERBO Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/LOTTAPICTURES of the Longines triple first time out it didn’t matter because his fellow-countrymen had already racked up foot-perfect runs. But second time out, pathfinder Marcus Ehning and his exciting new stallion, Comme Il Faut 5, hit the first element of the triple combination and although both Janne Freiderike and her classy gelding Goja 27, and Mario Stevens and Brooklyn made no mistake, three more clears from the Dutch put major pressure on fourth-line rider Stuhylmeyer second time out. By now the Swiss had lost their grip with eight faults to add, but the Swedes held firm with three great clears. Peder Fredricson’s brilliant campaigner, Lunatic, was officially retired before the class began this afternoon, but the rider has found a lovely stallion to follow in his footsteps in the nine-year-old H&M All In who never touched a pole all day. And although Douglas Lindelow and Casello fell victim to the penultimate oxer this time out, both Helena Persson (Bonzai H) and Henrik von Eckermann (Cantinero) left all the poles in place to ensure they completed on their first-round tally. The Dutch could be seen checking the jump-off course before lastline German, Stuhylmeyer, came into the ring because if he left all the timber up then it would come down to a two-way ride-off to decide the result. However when Lacan hit the middle element of the Longines triple combination it was all over, and the Dutch would have their day once again. >

DESERVES THE WIN Dutch Chef d’Equipe Ehrens said “Gerco didn’t touch a rail today but he still deserves the win because he has been a key member of the team for so many past events. We struggled a bit at the beginning of the season because of small things. We had to replace combinations etc., so the victory today is a matter of working really well together. There is an enormous team spirit and only a small phone call was necessary to get them to come to Falsterbo. Everybody is on same line and has the same goal - winning - and when everybody works together it achieves great results. We have all the riders, owners and sponsors behind us, and the crowd were fantastic today, this is a brilliant place to win!” he added. Pathfinder, Harrie Smolders, said “in a Nations Cup you never know how it’s going to turn out, but we were really focused on today and our four horses and riders are in great shape at the moment - for us this is mission accomplished!” He’s one of several Dutch riders fighting for a place on his country’s team for the FEI European Championships at Aachen, Germany next month. When asked if he felt he was a likely contender Smolders replied, “for sure Rob will

have been looking at all the performances, particularly in the Nations Cup it’s always a great opportunity to see riders under pressure. I hope he liked the way we went today, but in Holland we have six or seven combinations able to jump on the European team and it comes down to his (Rob Ehrens’) choice in the end. I’m really pleased with Emerald though, he always had the talent but this year he’s really showing the benefit of the experience he has gained over the last few years and he’s full of confidence.” Today’s result sees the Swedes and Dutch move up behind France at the top of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2015 Europe Division 1 leaderboard, but for many of the other teams there is still plenty more work to be done. Despite their great season to date the British were only on a points-gaining mission at two of their three winning venues and will be hoping to improve their seventh-place position over the remaining two legs of the series at Hickstead (GBR) in two weeks’ time and Dublin (IRL) a week later. Each country has four qualifying opportunities during the season, and with only one more left to go, Team Germany, now lying fifth, will be feeling some of the heat at Hickstead.

FEI NATIONS CUP™ DRESSAGE: DANES DO THE DOUBLE AT HICKSTEAD
T
eam Denmark came out on top by a narrow margin at the sixth and last leg of the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage 2015 pilot series staged at Hickstead, Great Britain today. It was their second successive victory at the British venue, and once again they pinned the host nation into runner-up spot, while Sweden filled third place ahead of South Africa in fourth. The competition included results from Friday’s Grand Prix, Saturday’s Grand Prix Special and today’s Grand Prix Freestyle. And there was plenty of pressure on the eventual winners as, similarly to last year, the Danes fielded a team of just three horse-and-rider combinations. With all six legs of the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage 2015 pilot series now concluded, the provisional results show Germany as the new champions followed by both Sweden and The Netherlands in joint-runner-up spot.
PLENTY OF INTEREST The presence of British Dressage superstar, Carl Hester, in Friday’s Grand Prix ensured plenty of extra home interest. And the 48-year-old rider didn’t disappoint when topping the line-up with a score of 73.160 with Wanadoo on the horse’s Grand Prix debut. However they were not part of the British team, so when Anders Dahl and Wie-Atlantico de Ymas slotted into second with 70.700, ahead of fellowDane Sidsel Johansen and Alibi D in third with 69.540, then Danish chances were looking very good indeed. Best of the British team was Alice Ruth Oppenheimer who filled fourth with Headmore Delegate while teammates Henriette Andersen (Warlocks Charm) and Hayley Watson-Greaves (Rubins Nite) slotted into sixth and eighth, and although Denmark’s Sune Hansen finished down the order in 12th-place with Charmeur, it was clear after the first day that it would be another tough battle between these two strong sides.
FINAL RESULT Johansen was the sole Danish representative in Saturday’s Grand Prix Special so, despite her victory, Denmark lay last of the four nations going into today’s Freestyle which would decide the final result.
Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/Jon Stroud only two marks in arrears for runner-up spot and that was enough to swing the pendulum dramatically in Denmark’s favour when Sune Hansen’s 70.650 was added as she slotted into eighth place. Sweden’s Malin Halmilton (Fleetwood) and Ebba von Essen (Yantuge) finished third and fifth while Britain’ Watson-Greaves and Andersen claimed fourth and sixth places, and the final scoreline showed just a marginal advantage for the winning side. Denmark topped the leaderboard with 140.683 ahead of Great Britain with 139.563 while Sweden’s finishing score was 138.932 and South Africa racked up 131.968. The South African side consisted of Katherine Berning (Brisbane), Chere Burger (Adel Prag Anders), Denise Hallion (Wer Vel Wind) and Tanya Seymour (Ramoneur 6).
WINNING SIDE Anders Dahl was the only member of today’s Danish team who was also on the 2014 winning side, and once again his contribution was critical. “Last year was the first time we had a team in the Nations Cup here at Hickstead and we won - it’s great to win it two years running!” said the 39-year-old who is married to British Dressage rider Fiona Bigwood and lives just a short distance from the Hickstead showgrounds. “I thought from the start we had a chance, we had good horses and riders and Sidsel (Johansen) went really well all week, winning the Special and third in the Grand Prix. I was also super-happy with Atlantico who was second in the Grand Prix behind Carl, and again today in the Freestyle. This is one of the biggest achievements of his career but we’ve enjoyed a great year in 2015 - he was great in Doha where we finished third behind Patrik Kittel and Carl”, he pointed out. Talking about the concept of Nations Cup Dressage he continued, “competing as part of a team is special because it brings people a lot closer together and presents another dimension to the sport. When I was in the arena today I knew if I did well and could come as close as possible to first place that our team was in with a big chance. When you’re actually riding it’s just you and your horse, but before you go in you know what needs to be done and this weekend we had all the pressure because there were only three of us on the team again - and we did it!”, he said.
Last into the arena this afternoon, Hester once again scooped the individual honours but Dhal’s 74.850 was

FURUSIYYA FEI NATIONS CUP™ SHOWJUMPING:
DANES HANDLE THE HEAT TO WIN AT BUDAPEST Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/Tomas Holcbecher/holcbecher.com
D
enmark won the fifth leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2015 Europe Division 2 League in Budapest, Hungary today where intense heat, a strong course and a mighty battle for qualifying points provided an afternoon of super sport. Sharing a three-way lead at the halfway stage, the Danes stood firm to finish ahead of the jointrunners-up from Czech Republic and Italy, while Austria lined up fourth ahead of the host nation in fifth place. A total of 13 nations competed, and with 11 chasing points towards the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2015 Final in Barcelona, Spain in September it was never going to be an easy one to win. A brilliant double-clear - one of seven on the day - from second-line rider Rikke Haastrup with Qualico du Bobois, helped anchor Danish chances however and secured the country’s first-ever Nations Cup victory at the historic Hungarian venue.
HEAT WAS ON The National Riding Centre in the heart of Budapest is a unique location, and with temperatures well into the mid30s as the action began, the heat was on in every sense. The course designed by Germany’s Werner Deeg included a big 1.80m-wide oxer two fences from home, but it was the 3.6m-wide open water that created much of the first-round drama, with elimination for Turkey’s third-line partnership of Efe Siyahi with Beau du Rouet who stopped twice here, and a fall for Czech Republic’s Emma Augier de Moussac when her gelding, Charly Brown, slammed on the brakes in front of it. The second element of the double at fence four proved influential throughout the entire afternoon as did the triple combination at fence six. However if there was a prize for pure courage today, it would have gone to Austria’s Astrid Kneifel whose feet got caught in both stirrups when she was unseated during a bad jump over the double first time out. Her gelding, Royal des Bissons, fortunately didn’t panic and she was quickly freed by arena officials, but it took some considerable strength of character for her to return to the ring in the second round and to complete the course, which she did.
LED THE WAY Hungary, Denmark and Italy all led the way into the second round carrying just four faults each and closely followed by Austria with five, Czech Republic, Turkey and Norway with eight apiece and Portugal with nine faults on the board. Only eight teams qualified for round two, so Russia, Slovakia, Greece, Bulgaria and Poland sat it out for the remainder of the competition. The Hungarians lost their grip on the lead with 16 to add second time out to finish on 20, while the Italians added 12 despite a double-clear from Giovanni Lucchetti (Bella Strade) to bring them on to 16. And the Austrians were unfortunate when they
were the only country to produce two double-clears on the day - from Roland Englbrecht (Mevisto’s Poorboy) and Max Kuhner (Coeur de Lion) - but obliged to add 13 second-round faults collected by Dieter Kofler (Emir v. Moleneind) when Astrid Kneifel bravely racked up 16 on her second tour of the track, rolling their scoreline onto 18. The Czechs on the other hand were improving all the time despite the second elimination for Augier de Moussac, adding just eight to finish on 16 faults alongside the Italians. In the end the Danes had a clear-cut victory, fourth-line rider Andreas Schou (Allstar) not required to return to the ring because Soren Pedersen’s only mistake of the afternoon with Tailormade Chaloubet was a pole down in the combination, Thomas Sandgaard (Amarone) added just four to his discard eight from the first round and Haastrup was foot-perfect both times out.
FIRST TIME Delighted Danish Chef d’Equipe, Lars Pedersen, said afterwards, “this is the first time these four riders have been in a team together but they are all well-experienced and the horses jumped well yesterday as well as today, so I’m very pleased. Following the results of our last Nations Cup we saw what need to be worked on, and it worked out well here” he pointed out. And he was particularly impressed by Haastrup’s performance. “Today was the first double-clear for Rikke in a Nations Cup” he said. Haastrup had every reason to be pleased herself. Talking about her 11-year-old stallion Qualico du Bobois which she has been competing for the last four years, she said, “today has been one of his very best performances, but he has been consistently placed in Grand Prix classes for a long time. He always wants to do the best for his rider, he’s clean and he’s smart, and he has been placed in about 15 Grand Prix classes because he always tries so hard!” She said he was very strong in the first round today, “but in the second round he rode much better. We came here with a very good team and the plan was to produce a good result. Yesterday all our horses and riders had a good day in the big class, so that gave us confidence for the team competition today”, she added. After today’s winning result, which has promoted Denmark to the top of the Europe Division 2 leaderboard, Chef d’Equipe Lars Pedersen is looking into the future with renewed excitement. “We now have two goals ahead of us” he said this evening, “the Furusiyya 2015 Final and the European Championships at Aachen - we have to find our very best team for these. And we definitely plan to come back to Budapest next year!” he concluded.

FEI NATIONS CUP™ DRESSAGE: GERMANS CRUISE HOME AT HAGEN Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/Karl-Heinz Frieler Team Germany were in a league of their own when winning the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage 2015 pilot series on home soil in Hagen today. With three scores in excess of 70 per cent and a massive 81.160 for last-line rider, Kristina Broring-Sprehe with Desperados FRH, they finished more than 15 points ahead of their nearest challengers from Denmark, while Spain slotted into third. A total of eight nations lined out for this highly-competitive leg that gave Chefs d’Equipe a chance to test horseand-rider combinations, and team spirit, ahead of next month’s all-important FEI European Championships in Aachen (GER). Russia lined up a close fourth ahead of Switzerland in fifth while the defending series champions from The Netherlands slotted into sixth ahead of the USA in seventh and Great Britain in eighth and last place.
CHOICE OF FORMATS Organisers have a choice of formats to decide the results in this pilot series, and Hagen chose to run the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage over just a single competition, todays’ Grand Prix. First out for the German side, Hubertus Schmidt had an uncomfortable time when he and his 12-year-old stallion, Imperio 3, had to endure a heavy downpour as well as gusty winds. However they still managed to post a hefty 72.5 which, when it turned out to be the team discard, gave a strong indication of German superiority on the day. German Chef d’Equipe, Klaus Roeser, fielded a truly heavyweight side, and when Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB scored 76.680 and Isabell Werth followed that with 77.440 from Don Johnson they already looked unbeatable. Many of the team managers kept their very best until last, and Broring-Sprehe’s big score with Desperados saw all five members of the Ground Jury - Germany’s Katrina Wuest and Evi Eisenhardt, Italy’s Vincenzo Truppa, Sweden’s Gustav Svalling and The Netherlands‘ Ghislain Fouarge - in complete agreement about the individual leading score of the day.
DEFINING She wasn’t the only one to produce a defining last-to-go performance however. The 76.000 awarded to Anna Kasprzak and Donnperignon saw Denmark leap-frog other nations to earn runner-up position. Agnete Kirk Thinggaard’s 67.66 with JoJo AZ was the discard when Daniel Bachmann Andersen and Blue Horse Loxana posted 71.900 and then Mikala Muenter Gundersen and My Lady posted 71.720 for a team total of 219.620. And Beatriz Ferrer-Salat did likewise for Spain. The multi-medalled 49-year-old who claimed team silver and individual bronze at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games steered the 14-year-old Delgado to a score of 75.180 which, when added to the 69.980 from Claudio Castilla Ruis (Alcaide) and 71.620 from Jose Daniel Martin Dockx (Grandioso) gave a team total 215.780 - Jordi Domingo Coll’s 68.78 (Wonder) was the discard here.
Team Russia’s 213.500 left them just over two points adrift in fourth place, and again the anchor partnership proved pivotal. Inessa Merkulova and Mister X are a hugely popular partnership wherever they go, and they lived up to their usual billing when boosting Russian chances considerably with a mark of 75.340. Switzerland finished fifth on 211.040, the three-member Dutch team finished sixth on 210.360, the USA lined up seventh with 210.000 and Great Britain rounded up the scoreboard with their total of 205.840.
THE FULL STORY The individual scoresheet told the full story at the end of the day, with Germany’s Broring-Sprehe, Werth and von Bredow-Werndl filling the top three places ahead of Kaskprazak, Merkulova and Ferrer-Salat. Broring-Sprehe had every reason to be in buoyant mood, as she was married just over two weeks ago to longtime boyfriend Christian Broring in a civil ceremony. They plan a church wedding following the FEI European Championships 2015 in Aachen, and the 28-year-old German Dressage star certainly pleased her Chef d’Equipe today with her sparkling ride in difficult circumstances. “Kristina was very, very good even though her horse got quite excited due to the weather”, Klaus Roeser said, “and Isabell was very good. Hubertus was a bit unlucky. There was very heavy wind and rain as he started, and he coped really well so his horse could show his quality, but they both had an early shower! All four riders did a great job!”, he added. Roeser has many of his big guns competing at Hagen this week and said today’s competition gave him the opportunity to see some potential team members for the forthcoming Championships. “But on the other hand we also have other interesting horses and riders going in the other Tour here. We have more days of competition, and by Sunday we will have a better overview of our potential team situation” he explained. He talked about his team’s winning margin. “We came with a strong team, but everyone faced the same conditions today and everyone had the same job to do. Yes the distance between ourselves and the Danes was not too small - but from our side that wasn’t a problem at all!” he said with a laugh. 1st - Germany 235.280: Imperio 3 (Hubertus Schmidt) 72.5, Unee BB (Jessica von Bredow-Werndl) 76.680, Don Johnson FRH (Isabell Werth) 77.440, Desperados FRH (Kristina Broring-Sprehe) 81.160.
4th - Russia 213.500: Laetare (Polina Afanasleva) 63.86, Kartsevo Upperville (Tatiana Dorofeeva) 67.840, Vosk (Marin Aframeeva) 70.320, Mister X (Inessa Merkulova) 75.340.
2nd - Denmark 219.620: JoJo AZ (Agnete Kirk Thinggaard) 67.66, Blue Hors Loxana (Daniel Bachmann Andersen) 71.900, My Lady (Mikala Muenter Gundersen) 71.720, Donnperignon (Anna Kasprzak) 76.00.
5th - Switzerland 211.040: Dandy de la Roche CMF CH (Antonella Joannou) 67.62, For Compliment (Birgit Wientzek-Plage) 69.680, Raffaello va Bene (Anna-Mengia Aerne) 69.600, Smeyers Molberg (Marcela Krinke-Susmelj) 71.760.
3rd - Spain 215.780: Wonder (Jordi Domingo Coll) 68.78, Alcaide (Claudio Castilla Ruis) 68.980, Grandioso (Jose Daniel Martin Dockx) 71.620, Delgado (Beatriz Ferrer-Salat) 75.180.
6th - Netherlands 210.360: Radetzky (Marjan van der Jagt) 68.240, Westpoint (Kirsten Beckers) 70.220, Bonzanjo (Diedeick van Silfhout) 71.900.

UCH y STUFF
Do you really need it? Particularly when riders purchase a new horse, often they just use whatever equipment the previous owner used on the horse. Sometimes some riders seek to use equipment to solve problems that could be better corrected with lessons or instruction, rather than adding more gear. How much gear do you actually need? In our opinion, getting back to basics is the best idea! A bridle, saddle, and a snaffle bit should always be your starting point. Extra equipment should only be added under the supervision of an instructor - and it should only be added as a training aid to improve the horse with a view to removing the equipment once the horse is more responsive. Extra equipment in inexperienced hands can quickly ruin a horse - harsher bits in inexperienced hands lead to hard mouths, side reins or draw reins can lead to incorrect carriage, and all of this extra stuff can lead to lazy riders and an ineffective seat!
Fashion vs Safety Just because something looks flashy doesn’t mean it’s necessary,or should be used. It’s a bit like forcing the horse’s head down without the work - taking a short cut to achieve a desired result, and yet still not achieving proper carriage or frame. If you have no purpose for a dutch gag bit, don’t use one! Fads seem to come in and out of the horse world - and just because everyone at riding club decides to purchase somenew piece of equipment or so called stylish training fad, decide for yourself whetheranew product is something that will benefit you and your horse. If not, steer clear! As with anything, so your own research, and find out what works for you. Asking your instructor is preferable before making any equipment changes.

Do you really need it? Safety should be foremost in your mind - and you should only ever use equipment that is safe for both you and your horse. Sometimes adding extra equipment can serve to solve a long term problem and make things safer... but adding equipment that is unnecessary can just serve to complicate things. Extra Equipment
Market Harborough A market harborough works by attaching to the girth, and running between the horses’s legs. It splits in two, and each strap is run through the bit rings and then clips to the reins themselves. The device is designed to help to keep the horse’s head down by applying pressure whenever the horse’s head is up, evading the bit. It should be used only in capable hands, and always with a view to removing it - training aids are just that - designed to offer a solution to a training problem and for the rider to be able to train the horse and remove the equipment in time. Care should be taken for the device not to be fitted too tightly, starting on the loosest setting, and under the supervision of an instructor or experienced rider.
Side Reins
Side Reins are often used when lungeing the horse to encourage it to become accustomed with a contact on the reins, and to encourage it to work in this contact, with it’s head down and not avoiding the bit. Side reins simply attach from the bit to the ‘D-rings’ on the side of the lungeing roller and are easily adjusted to suit the horse’s fitness level. Some breakers and horsemen insist that side reins on the inexperienced horse - one that has not been mouthed properly - can result in a horse that avoids contact. Even if side reins are fastened loosely, they can still put pressure on the horse’s mouth and still DO this even as he moves his head naturally when working at the trot, for example. Side reins work by putting pressure on the horse’s mouth whenever he raises his head, and apply little or no pressure (ideally no pressure!) when he is working well with his head where it should be. A training aid that can definitely spoil a horse in the wrong hands!

Fancy Bits It seems that nowdays there are bits in all shapes and sizes, made from different materials. Some are flavoured rubber, or copper training bits designed by their individual developers to do A, B, or C for your horse. In all cases, investigate the bit thoroughly. ANY bit in the wrong hands can do damage to a horse’s mouth, but the best types of bits are the simplest. Snaffles are the standard and should always be used > as a first option.

Everyone! Are you aware that the International governing body for horse sports, the FEI, calls The Scale of Training “the most important guideline for riders, trainers, and judges”? (FEI, 2007).
It is the backbone of every good training session, the guide from Preliminary to Grand Prix, and what judges use to assess horse and rider combinations when competing at all levels. Finally, here is a DVD resource enabling The Scale of Training to be easily understood by everyone, and applied right from the start! • Main section: The Scale of Training. Official FEI definitions, each step performed Correctly and Incorrectly, helpful Asides, Exercises to try at home, and Questions to ask yourself. • Bonus section: Turn on the Forehand, Leg Yield, and Shoulder Fore. • Full colour booklet: Investigates every Preliminary and Novice arena figure.
Dance as One with your horse, and experience greater success! For around the same investment as a single riding lesson, here is a resource that will serve you well for every ride, every day.

fancy STUFF
Do you really need it? Fancy Bits continued... A simple noseband change might be all that is required if the horse is avoiding contact, rather than resorting to a dutch gag! It’s also much harder to increase the sensitivity of a hard mouth - once the damage is done it is extremely difficult to go back to a soft, responsive mouth - so use ALL bits with caution, and endeavour to improve your riding skills to slow your mount, rather than rely on heavier hands! (It’s ALL in the SEAT!) It’s worth investigating how the bit sits in your horse’s mouth - thin bits apply more pressure to a concentrated area, wide bits take up room in the mouth and can be uncomfortable. How you ride also affects the horse. Many behavioural problems can be caused as a result of bits pinching, or the ‘nutcracker’ action of some bits where, when pressure is put on both reins, the joint can move and hit the horse’s soft palate on the roof of the mouth. Adding extra equipment or a ‘harsher’ bit will not be a step forward in finding a solution. (Our suggestion - check out www.iiwinners.com/WTP )
The Bottom Line If you don’t understand how it works, or what it is for - DON’T USE IT! Training aids in the wrong hands can cause more harm than good! In the horse world, everyone has an opinion, and generally, if you have a problem with your horse you’ll get a lot of different advice if you ask around... and sometimes even if you don’t! Do your own research and make sure you understand what equipment is supposed to achieve and how it is supposed to work before purchashing and using it. There are cases when extra equipment may be necessary to correct a problem that the horse has (or that the rider has created!), in which case advice should be sought before slapping extra leathers and harsh bits on. In all, extra equipment should be a means to correc t the problem, and remove the equipment in order to go back to simple good fashioned riding - your aids, seat, good hands, and a willing partnership and good working relationship between horse and rider.

FEI NATIONS CUP™
DRESSAGE:
SWEDES ON SONG AT FALSTERBO Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén with Don Auriello
Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/Lotta Gyllensten
B
irthday-girl Tinne VilmhelmsonSilfven led the Swedish team to victory as the fifth leg of the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage 2015 pilot series drew to a close at Falsterbo, Sweden today. The Netherlands lined up second ahead of Germany in third while Denmark finished fourth. And the Spanish overtook Team USA for fifth place on this final afternoon.
Vilmhelmson-Silfven, riding Don Auriello, and team-mate Patrik Kittel with Deja, confirmed Swedish supremacy when producing the only two scores above 80 per cent in today’s Freestyle. But it was the contribution made by 27-year-old newcomer, Emilie Nyrerod that particularly impressed Bo Jenå. “I’m so proud of my team!” the Swedish Chef d’Equipe said. “They’ve done a great job here at Falsterbo and above all, Emelie Nyreröd, who is new in the team at this level and the way that she did it in both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special!” GRAND PRIX The action began with all team-members competing in Friday’s Grand Prix in which Nyrerod scored 71.460 with Miata. When added to the 77.500 produced by Kittel and 77.680 awarded to Vilmhelmson-Silfven, the home team was already in charge with a total of 226.640. Minna Telde’s 66.300 with Santana was the Swedish discard when only the best three scores for each side were taken into account. >

FEINEWS FEI NATIONS CUP™ DRESSAGE:
SWEDES ON SONG AT FALSTERBO The three-rider Dutch side of Mirelle Kemenade-Willox (Decor Vivaldo), Katja Gevers (Thriller) and Patrick van der Meer (Uzzo) filled second spot on a total of 210.700 while Germany’s Nadine Husenbeth (Florida 94), Matthias Bouten (Ehrengold MJ), Christoph Koschel (Tiesto) and Thomas Wagner (Amoricello) were close behind in third on 210.180. Denmark’s Helene Melsen (Aston Martin), Lena Leschly Aaman (Goerklintgaards Fanero), Lisbet Selerskilde (Jonstrupgardens Raneur) and Andreas Helgstrand (Toerveslettens Stamina) filled fourth spot on 206.220. And Team USA’s Susan Dutta (Currency DC), Devon Kane (Destiny), Brian Hafner (Lombardo LHF) and Catherine Haddad Staller (Mane Stream Hotmail) posted 204.360 for fifth spot. There were also only three on the Spanish team that brought up the rear with a combined mark of 203.800. But they are an exciting bunch of talented young riders, with Severo Jesus Jurado Lopez (NOHS Daijoubo) the oldest at just 26 years of age joined by sisters Morgan Barbancon Mestre (Vitana V) who is 22, and 19-year-old Alexandra Barbancon Mestre (Don Lorean) who has just moved up to Young Riders level. THREE CLASSES The result was decided over three classes, the a maximum of two riders per team taking part in Saturday’s Grand Prix Special and the remainder competing in today’s Freestyle. Nyrerod’s victory in the Special, scoring 72.314, was backed up by a third-place finish for Telde who posted 70.627. And when Kittel’s 81.250 was followed by 82.220 from Vilmhelmson-Silfven who topped the Freestyle today, the podium placings were confirmed. The only change to the standings after the first day was at the bottom of the leaderboard. Jurado Lopez was the only one of the Spanish contingent to go in the Freestyle today, finishing tenth, and when that result was added to a second-place finish for Morgan Barbancon Mestre and twelfth for sister Alexandra in yesterday’s Special, the trio frog-leaped the Americans.
The Swedish team celebrating on the podium after victory in the FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage 2015 pilot series leg at Falsterbo, Sweden: (L to R) Patrik Kittel, Emilie Nyrerod, Tinne Vilmhelmson-Silfven and Minna Telde.
PERFECT PRACTICE “This Nations Cup was the perfect practice ahead of the Europeans next month (FEI European Championships 2015). To ride like a team and work like a team together, it puts more pressure on, and particularly in front of the home crowd because there is so much electricity and atmosphere! There are about seven or eight of us competing here this weekend who are all candidates for the team, but the official announcement will not be made until next Tuesday I think”, Vilhelmson-Silfven explained. “I am extra happy today because everything went smoothly and we worked well to the music” she continued. “My horse and I have had a good summer so far, not too much competition but all successful. We went to Aachen and did very well there and we also went to Hagen. I’ve been balancing it out between training and showing to keep Anton (Don Auriello) fresh and happy. He will have a rest now and then start training again for the Europeans, but this has been a really nice event, and everyone has enjoyed the team competition very much!” she concluded.

PAN-AMERICAN GAMES 2015: EVENTING DOUBLE-GOLD FOR USA Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/StockImageServices
A
merica scooped both the team and individual titles as Eventing came to a close today at the Pan-American Games 2015 in Caledon Park, Toronto, Canada. Always with their eyes on the target of that single qualifying spot on offer for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Philip Dutton, Lauren Kieffer, Marilyn Little and Boyd Martin forged a marginal lead over the host country in Dressage on Friday. And, once out in front, they held on tight to triumph ahead of Brazil this afternoon, while Canada had to settle for bronze in the final analysis. And Little took the individual title in fine style. Lying second, and less than a fence behind Brazil’s Ruy Fonseca who led from the outset with Tom Bombadill Too, the 33-year-old former Jumping rider kept a cool head to stay clear with her relatively inexperienced mare RF Scandalous today, while 2011 PanAmerican Eventing individual champions Jessica Phoenix and Pavarotti from Canada claimed silver this time around when Fonseca’s single error dropped him to bronze medal spot. A total of 11 nations lined out in the team competition, and Ecuador, Chile and Mexico were lying fourth, fifth and sixth after the Dressage phase. The USA had only a slender 0.7 point lead over Canada going into cross-country day, and Brazil was chasing hard when only three marks further adrift at this stage.
CROSS-COUNTRY TRACK Canadian chances took a sharp knock however when Kathryn Robinson was eliminated for a fall with Let It Bee at the Hayracks, the second fence on yesterday’s cross-country track. Her teammates Waylon Roberts (Bill Owen), Colleen Loach (Qorry Blue D’Argouges) and Jessica Phoenix (Pavarotti) all completed the course without incident. But Canada dropped behind Brazil when Fonseca, Carlos Parro (Caulcourt Landline), Henrique Plombon (Land Quenotte) and Jorge Marcio Carvalho (Lissy Mac Wayer) all likewise kept a clean sheet, Robinson’s brilliant 39.80 in Dressage, which placed her individually second on the opening day, no longer being taken into account. All four American team-members cruised home, maintaining their advantage with nothing to add. From a starting field of 43, a total of 16 returned within the timeallowed of 8 minutes 39 seconds, including all three members of the team from Ecuador who eventually finished fourth. A total of 10 horse-and-rider combinations were eliminated over the 26-fence track created by Australia’s Wayne Copping.
JUMPING PHASE As the final Jumping phase got underway today, Team USA had less than a fence in hand over the Brazilians, while the Canadians were more than 20 penalties further adrift. America’s Martin (Pancho Villa) and Kieffer (Meadowbrooks Scarlett) kept a clean sheet once again, but when Philip Dutton’s Fernhill Fugitive collected four faults then Little’s result might prove pivotal for the team rankings.
The individual medals were also still very much up for grabs, and for Little there was no room for error as Canada’s Jessica Phoenix and Pavarotti, who were lying just 3.20 points behind, had piled on the pressure with a brilliant clear when third-last into the ring. The American didn’t falter however, leaving all the poles in place with her 10-year-old Oldenburg mare, and placing all the weight on Fonseca’s shoulders. Even a time fault would cost the Brazilian dearly, but when his 15-year-old gelding had a fence down he dropped all the way to bronze medal position individually and his team remained in silver medal spot.
NEW TO THE SPORT “My mare is new to the sport, I have her for only a year now and she’s only just moved up to 2-Star level with the goal of these Games in mind!” said newly-crowned individual gold medallist Little this evening. She explained that she was a regular on the US Jumping team between 1999 and 2011, and competed in several Nations Cups, but then suddenly decided to change her allegiance. “I became interested in Eventing when watching the World Equestrian Games in 2010 on TV. I thought “I’d like to do that, it looks like a lot of fun!”, so when I came back from Spruce Meadows that year I pulled one out of the barn and it has gone from there! I did my first 4-Star in 2012”, she explained. She has really enjoyed the Pan-American Games experience at Caledon Park this week. “The event has been beautifully organised and it has been an incredible experience from the standpoint of horsemanship, the thought and care they’ve put into everything for the horses has been amazing. The crosscountry course was fair but challenging, it has to be difficult for the course designer catering for the developing riders as well as very seasoned competitors. It needed to be challenging for both, but safe enough too, and he really succeeded in that” she said.
IN THE MOMENT Talking about the cross-country track she said, “riding the course you had to be “in the moment”...you had to stay aware of all the plans. Cross-country is designed to force you to look at all the options and to stay ready to take them if necessary. Making it easy to quickly change your plan is the mark of a good cross-country course. Fitness played a part too yesterday, the terrain took its toll in terms of technicality and some horses got tired, but it was safe and jumpable and it was really a pleasure to ride the track.” Despite all her experience as a Jumping rider, Little said she was still feeling the heat going into the arena this afternoon with so much hanging in the balance. “I knew I was under pressure, but I also knew my horse is a clear-rounder and very careful. She’s very sensitive though, and the atmosphere was electric, especially since I was following a Canadian rider (Jessica Phoenix) into the ring! I knew I had to remain calm and focused, and take it just one jump at a time and not get caught up with the magnitude of the moment!”

Important notes when feeding Rice Bran
Stabilised rice bran has become a popular dietary supplement horses and has achieved somewhat of a cult-like following w performance horse owners. Despite it’s popularity, many h owners are confused regarding the what, when and why of rice b
By Definition Rice bran is the outer brown layer of the rice kernel. The bran used in horse feeds is removed during the milling process that generates white rice for human consumption. Rice bran only accounts for about 10% of the rice kernel and it has been estimated that nearly 500kg of rice must be milled to produce a single 25kg bag of rice bran. Rice bran is a rich source of fat, several B vitamins and phosphorus. Laboratories estimate the fat content of raw rice bran at around 20%, which is higher than most horse feeds. Unfortunately, raw rice bran has a very short shelf life due to its high fat content and a potent lipase enzyme, which immediately begins to break down the fat once the bran is separates from the rice kernel. To prevent rice bran from becoming rancid, it must undergo an immediate stabilisation process. Stabilisation subjects the rice bran to heat and pressure, which deactivate the lipase enzyme without

destroying the nutritional value of the rice bran. Stabilised rice bran, a useful ingredient in horse feeds, should not be confused with several other rice milling by products that are unacceptable ingredients in horse feed. Raw (unstabilised) rice bran should not be fed to horses due to palatability problems and digestive upset, which may result from rancid fat or spoilage.
Useful Nutrients
t
As previously mentioned, stabilised rice bran is a good source of fat. Table 1 compares the fat content of several ingredients commonly fed to horses.
Kentucky Equine Research has conducted several digestion trials involving Equi-Jewel, stabilised rice bran. This research has confirmed that the fat in Equi-Jewel is highly digestible and is equally digestible as corn oil. A number of reports from the field have indicated that young growing horses, hard keepers and equine athletes have shown improved body condition after rice bran supplementation, sometimes this difference can be seen visually in as little as two weeks. >

In somecases because the energy density (increased number of calories per kg) is increased with ricebran, the amount of grain can actually be reduced, this reducing chances of digestive upsetassociated with carbohydrate overload.

Studies by KER have shown that when compared with corn oil as a daily supplement forhorses, Equi-Jewel supplemented horses tended to have lower blood lactate levels, lower heartrates and faster recovery rates than horses supplemented with oil when subjected to a strenuousexercise test.
4.
Equi-Jewel has recently been investigated and shown to be beneficial when used in dietsdesigned to manage horses that are predisposed to equine rhabdomyolysis (‘tying up’) where it isknown that high fat diets are important. If stabilised rice bran is used to replace a portion of the grain in the diet, it is vital to remember that rice bran is not fortified with vitamins and minerals (apart from calcium, phosphorus, vitamin E and selenium). Therefore, the horse will continue to require proper vitamin and mineral supplementation in addition to the stabilised rice bran. For example, horses should not have their entire grain diet replaced with rice bran without the addition of a balanced vitamin and/ or mineral supplement. Stabilised rice bran is also a popular additive to the diets of show horses and horses being prepared for sale. Both groups of horses are scrutinised for coat and body condition. With its elevated fat content, stabilised rice bran is a good source of essential fatty acids.
These fatty acids are essential for a healthy skin and quality coat condition. In fact, one of the first benefits noted from feeding rice bran is a positive change in coat condition. The diets of young growing horses may also benefit from the addition of dietary fat. Past and present research studies seek to evaluate the potential benefit that dietary fat may have on minimising post-feeding fluctuations in blood metabolites and hormones. Minimising large fluctuations in blood metabolites and hormones may decrease the incidence of developmental orthopaedic problems. Again, if stabilised rice bran is fed to young growing horses, it is essential to maintain the proper level of essential vitamins and minerals in the diet. The addition of stabilised rice bran to the diets of young and growing horses will not replace the fundamental need for sound vitamin, mineral, protein fibre and carbohydrate balanced nutrition. In summary, rice bran is a highly digestible byproduct of the rice milling industry. It should be heat and pressure stabilised prior to feeding to prevent rancidity and digestive upset. The primary feature of stabilised rice bran is its high (20%) fat content. Stabilised rice bran is convenient as an energy and essential fatty acid source in the diets of show and performance horses as well as young growing horses. Finally, stabilised rice bran should be viewed as an additive to a horse’s diet and not a replacement for essential vitamin and mineral fortification.

IRAN’S POURREZAI WINS FEI WORLD JUMPING CHALLENGE FINAL Words: Louise Parkes. Photos: FEI/Tanya Mladenova
I
ranian rider, Davood Pourrezai, galloped to gold in an exciting three-way jump-off against the clock in the closing competition at the FEI World Jumping Challenge Final 2015 in Zhitnica, Bulgaria yesterday. South Africa’s Simon Hendry took silver ahead of Namibia’s Michelle Kuenzle in bronze at the event which was staged at the HRC Trakietz Equestrian Centre. The Final is open to Category A riders from 10 FEI regional zones and this year attracted 22 riders from 17 countries. And the flags of Bermuda, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, India, Iran, Libya, Morocco, Namibia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Syria, Swaziland, Uruguay and Venezuela were all flown with pride over the four days of competition.
UNDERWAY The action got underway last Wednesday when 29 horses were presented for the veterinary inspection. The purpose of the FEI World Jumping Challenge series and Final is to introduce less experienced riders in comparatively remote countries to international-level competition. And the first test they face at the Final is building a relationship with a borrowed horse which is no mean feat at any time, even for the most professional of riders. As always, the horse-and-rider combinations were decided by a draw, which was followed by a training session and then a confidence-building Warm-up competiiton. Run under Table A, article 238.1.1 rules, athletes with equality of penalties shared the prizes, so it was a seven-way divide between Giorgia Iermazzo from Dominican Republic, Uruguay’s Jorge Rossi, South Africa’s Simon Hendry, Chile’s Alfonse Anguita, Colombia’s Alejandro Castilla Galan, Saad Jabri from Morocco and India’s Rushil Patel when they all jumped clear. The official Opening Ceremony was held that evening with all 22 competitors taking part in the athletes parade, and it was a very special occasion as the Organising Committee put together a programme that included traditional music and a video montage for each competing nation. Afterwards the athletes released air balloons to mark the beginning of the event.
PERFECT START The eventual champion got off to a perfect start the following day when, partnering the nine-year-old Drazki, he topped the one-round First Qualifier ahead of Colombia’s Castilla Galan while Saudi Arabia’s Meshal Alharbi slotted into third. It was an impressive opening effort from all the competitors, with 14 steering their mounts clear over the course. It was in Friday’s Second Qualifier that South Africa’s Hendry began to look seriously competitive when lining up second in the two-round class over a 1.20m course with the 11-year-old
Mirella Freni. Winner here was Saad Jabri with the 10-year-old Finesse whose speedy turn of foot in the second round gave the Moroccan rider more than two seconds of a winning advantage. Giorgia Ieromazzo finished third with Viziorka while Bulgaria’s Zhelyazko Dimitrov was fourth when producing the only other double-clear of the competition with Piquer. The results of the first two qualifiers decided the top-10 who would go into the final day.
SATISFYING RESULT Sunday’s action began with the Farewell competition for the athletes that didn’t make the cut to the Final, and Bermuda’s Krista Rabain had a particularly satisfying result when finishing third here with Rubine following her elimination for a fall in Friday’s class. There were only two clear rounds, and Venezuela’s Diego Malave Cariello produced by far the quickest of these when taking the win with Charizma who raced through the timers in 62.43 seconds. India’s Rushil Patel opted for a safe clear with Paris, and the decision paid off handsomely when the pair broke the beam in 77.8 seconds but left all the timber in place for runner-up spot. Now it was down to the Final itself, and when only three managed to stay double-clear over the first two rounds, a thrilling jump-off was guaranteed. And it didn’t disappoint. First out was Hendry who really put it up to the others when clear and fast in 36.00 seconds with Mirella Freni. And when Namibia’s Michelle Kuenzle had a pole down with her feisty stallion Charodey, then only Pourrezal stood between the South African and the coveted title. But the Iranian managed to squeeze home with Drazki in 35.23 seconds and that would clinch it. Pourrezai said afterwards that he knew Hendry would be his strongest opponent. He had selected him as the rider most likely to succeed in a survey undertaken earlier in the week by all the competitors. “I knew what I had to do, and when I came into the arena and saw the cup I thought to myself that to win it would be a dream!” His dream came true only a few seconds later.
ECLECTIC GROUP Pourrezai said he thoroughly enjoyed competing against such an eclectic group from all around the globe. “I’d really like to compete in an event like this again” he said. Asked about riding an unfamiliar horse he explained that he is used to different rides, so it was not a particular challenge for him. And he was delighted with the performance of the horse allocated to him. “My first impression was that Drazki was maybe not the best in the lot, but had potential” he said. He changed his mind after riding him for the first time and winning the First Qualifier however. “I could clearly feel that he was a good horse, and we really clicked!” said the delighted new champion.

HORSEMANSHIP >> HORSEMANSHIP
Sometimes..... Sometimes, you need to listen to your horse, give him what he needs, use the tools around you, to get to a point where you can train. This was my status update on facebook yesterday after I worked with a mare who got me thinking (they all seem to get me thinking!).
whatever you want to call it out of her system. I didn’t take offence to it, and all it ‘cost’ me was 5 minutes – and what I gained was more building blocks in our relationship. The next hour and a half was spent doing some quality training.
When I pulled up she was as high as a kite, looking around, out of touch, challenging to communicate with. The owner has been getting lessons for these very reasons, the mare is easily distracted and pulls focus. Huge leaps and bounds have been made over the past 4 weeks, and yesterday was no different. However, when I arrived however she was pretty far ‘gone’ I started to move her around a bit (online) and she was jumpy and bolstery. I had 2 choices, 1st one, try to work with what I had, bring her down and spend most of our session trying to communicate, 2, take a step back, look around at what tools I had, and see if I could give her what she needed. Blessed as I am I had a roundyard nearby, I decided to head out into the roundyard and let her ‘get it out of her system’ – with some level of direction – its not just a ‘free for all’.
Sometimes, you need to listen to your horse, give him what he needs, use the tools around you, to get to a point where you can train. We wont always have a roundyard, we wont always have an arena, but we always have the ability to step back, think about what is happening, and see if there is a way to make it easier – for us, and the horse.
So I headed out into the middle, took off her lead and halter, asked her to yield the forequarter, hind quarter, back up etc. Then I asked her to send out onto the circle – and boy she went! Galloping, bucking, head up in the air like a giraffe, I let her go for 3 circles, changed her direction and let her go the other way a few times. When I could see a slight change, I called her in. Up she came and got a rub, happy to stand with me in the middle, we then proceeded to have an awesome session at liberty – her first time ever, where she stuck to me like glue, walk, trot turn etc. I believe there was no way we would have got there if I hadn’t let her get the ‘play’ or ‘excess energy’ or

The Tail End brought to you by...
horsey habits
that only horse people understand
are you guilty? We often talk about those things that horses teach us, and those things that really are unique about equestriennes.. mostly because it's hilarious to make comparisons between horse people and non- horse people. We don't understand why it's not socially acceptable to find stray hay in your hair, they don't understand how we spend hours on end picking up horse crap... Non-horsey people definitely don’t understand the concept of ‘close the gate’, or the importance of getting a job done in a timely manner. They don’t have the added stress of animals (who often live at a different place of residence to us) relying on you to supply all that they require for optimum health, happiness and vitality. They don’t understand what the motivation is for getting up at four in the morning, spending hours preparing your horse, plaiting, cleaning tack, driving two hours or more to a venue only to come home with a printed piece of felt. No. But we do! When you find yourself clucking to your car and leaning forward when you’re driving uphill, you can
70
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
safely assume you’ve been equestrienned to the max. Horses also develop a keen sense of awareness in us, and teach us that Murphy’s Law is, in fact, still relevant. (Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong!) But this does ensure that generally, we’re prepared for both the best case and worse case scenarios. (Usually with back up reins and spare halter and leadropes to be used as required.) You know you’re a horse person when.. baling twine has become your number one ‘knee jerk reaction’ fix. When you’re a horsey person, baling twine is always plentiful, in good supply, and close at hand. As a horsey person, you also recognise its unique ability to be a strong (albeit temporary) fix for most common problems.
SPOTLIGHT “Oh, the boot latch on the car is broken!” “Never mind that - I’ve got some baling twine handly. We’ll just tie it down to make sure it’s secure, and when we have a spare five minutes, we’ll fix it.” Which then brings us to the other horsey habit, or rather, the constant struggle: Time management. No, it’s not that our time management skills are lacking. It’s that there simply is not enough time in each day. Horses to be fed, troughs to be cleaned and filled, manure to clean up, horses to be fed again, and that’s not even including grooming, tacking up, riding time OR cooling down.
STALLION 2 HORSE ANGLE FLOAT EXTENDED $18,500 Victoria
So yeah. That car boot latch? That’ll have to wait. Probably about six months or so. Or until the baling twine gives. The good news? When it does give, you’ll have another fresh piece on hand to get you through another six months. It’s all about priorities. Duh. The equestrienne is also known to have a unique diet, often consisting of apples and carrots for eating on the run. (Hey, don’t judge, it’s simply what is often available or close at hand around the paddocks.) Who needs Masterchef?! Better question; who has the time to both watch television and spend hours labouring over a hot stove to produce something that is simply sustainance?
SPOTLIGHT BYALEE GUCCI MAGNIFICENT BAY GELDING 16.2hh 6yo Bay Gelding POA

Equestriennes are also quick to react and often able to keep calm and stay focused in the face of an emergency. We are the people that the non-horsey want to keep around for such sitations that the squeamish or mentally weak can’t handle. We learn to cope (and thrive) under pressure. If it needs doing, we’ll get it done - as long as the horses are fed, rugged and tucked up for the night, that is! Equestriennes on the whole are also attuned to the needs of their charges. *cough* I mean, masters. They say that human mothers can hear their babies cry over other sounds and background noise; that they are innately tuned to be able to hear their infant in distress. Well, we’ve evolved too; and possess the ability to know exactly which horse is neighing or carrying on, and to read what exactly is going on. That’s how you know that your Thoroughbred mare is about to kick her door down if dinner isn’t forthcoming in five seconds flat, and how you know that the fence is down and that the stallion is visiting all of the mares down the laneway. Yep. Better grab that baling twine...
