EQUINENEWS EQUINENEWS GET SPIRITED AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM From September through to March the National Museum of Australia will have an exhibition tracing how horses helped build our nation. Spirited: Australia’s Horse Story is part of the Museum’s Horses in Australia project, which commenced in early 2013. The exhibition will present stories of the powerful bonds that have formed between Australians and their horses. The exhibition will draw together objects from the Museum’s Historical Collection, including icons of Australian thoroughbred racing, horse drawn vehicles, tools from a 1920’s saddler, a WW1 Australian Light Horse uniform, equine anatomical specimens as well as trophies and equipment from the nation’s leading international equestrians. There is going to be loads of film, sound and sculptural elements and will offer experiences such as: • A children’s trail and a specially designed family activity area • An extended equine encounter beyond the exhibition, into the Museum’s galleries to discover treasures like Phar Lap’s heart and the Sunshine stripper-harvester • A comprehensive website with extra information about Australia’s horse history, behind-the-scenes stories, videos and visitors’ horse tales. Themes from the exhibition will include Australia’s first horses, Exploring, Surveying and Law and Order, The Pastoral Station, Wild horses, On the Road, The Heart of the Exhibition, In the Town, Horse Health and Welfare, On the Track, On the Battlefield, Across the City, On the Open Range, In the Ring and more. >

KENTUCKY EQUINE RESEARCH - NUTRITION NEWS

STABILISED RICE BRAN Just the facts Stabilised rice bran is a popular dietary supplement for horses and has achieved somewhat of a cult-like following with performance horse owners. Despite its popularity, many horse owners are confused regarding the what, when and why of rice bran. BY DEFINITION Rice bran is the outer brown layer of the rice kernel. The bran used in horse feeds is removed during the milling process that generates white rice for human consumption. Rice bran is a rich source of fat (rice oil), several B vitamins and phosphorus. Laboratories estimate the fat content of raw rice bran at around 20%, which is higher than most horse feeds. Unfortunately, raw rice bran has a very short shelf life due to its high fat content and a potent lipase enzyme, which immediately begins to break down the fat once the bran is separates from the rice kernel. To prevent rice bran from becoming rancid, it must undergo an immediate stabilisation process. Stabilisation subjects the rice bran to heat and pressure, which inactivate the lipase enzyme without destroying the nutritional value of the rice bran. Stabilised rice bran, a useful ingredient in horse feeds, should not be confused with several other rice milling by products that are unacceptable ingredients in horse feed. Raw (unstabilised) rice bran should not be fed to horses due to palatability problems and digestive upset, which may result from rancid fat or spoilage. USEFUL NUTRIENTS As previously mentioned, stabilised rice bran is a good source of fat. Kentucky Equine Research has conducted several digestion trials involving Equi-Jewel, stabilised rice bran. This research has confirmed that the fat in Equi-Jewel is highly digestible and is equally digestible as corn oil. A number of reports from the field have indicated that young growing horses, hard keepers and equine athletes have shown improved body condition after rice bran supplementation, sometimes this difference can be seen visually in as little as two weeks. A potential problem with most bran including rice bran is that they contain more phosphorus than calcium. This may create an imbalance in rations that use grass hay as their primary forage source. Equi-Jewel rice bran contains added calcium as well as vitamin E and selenium so the calcium: phosphorus ratio is balanced. Thus Equi-Jewel, in contrast to wheat bran or pollard, can be safely added to a ration without creating a nutrient imbalance. Finally, stabilised rice bran is a good source of B vitamins including thiamine, niacin and riboflavin. These B vitamins function in many of the bodies’ metabolic reactions to provide energy for work and maintenance.

q

Before Equi-Jewel

WHEN TO FEED Stabilised rice bran is a safe, palatable means of adding calories to the diets of many types of horses. Because many of the calories originate from fat, adding stabilised rice bran to the diet avoids potential digestive upset which may occur with high carbohydrate (grain) feeding. Stabilised rice bran also offers the advantage of providing fat in the diet in a solid pelleted form thus eliminating the mess, hassle and wastage associated with oils. Just 500g of Equi-Jewel can be used in place of 250ml (a cup) of oil and in some cases works out cheaper than oil on a day by day basis. Many types of horses can benefit from the addition of fat in their diets in the form of stabilised rice bran. In particular, performance horses benefit in a number of ways: 1. Dietary fat serves as a calorie rich foodstuff, which helps the athletic horse meet its energy requirements. 2.For performance horses that have trouble maintaining their weight, stabilised rice bran functions as an additional energy source without the addition of more grain to the diet. 4.Studies by KER have shown that when compared with corn oil as a daily supplement for horses, Equi-Jewel supplemented horses tended to have lower blood lactate levels, lower heart rates, and faster recovery rates than horses supplemented with oil when subjected to a strenuous exercise test. 4. Equi-Jewel has been shown to be beneficial when used in diets designed to manage horses that are predisposed to equine rhabdomyolysis (‘tying up’) where it is known that high fat diets are important. If stabilised rice bran is used to replace a portion of the grain in the diet, it is vital to remember that rice bran is not fortified with vitamins and minerals (apart from calcium, phosphorus, vitamin E and selenium). Therefore, the horse will continue to require proper vitamin and mineral supplementation in addition to the stabilised rice bran. For example, horses should not have their entire grain diet replaced with rice bran without the addition of a balanced vitamin and/ or mineral supplement. Stabilised rice bran is also a popular additive to the diets of show horses and horses being prepared for sale. Both groups of horses are scrutinised for coat and body condition. With its elevated fat content, stabilised rice bran is a good source of essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential for a healthy skin and quality coat condition. In fact, one of the first benefits noted from feeding rice bran is a positive change in coat condition. In summary, rice bran is a highly digestible by-product of the rice milling industry. It should be heat and pressure stabilised prior to feeding to prevent rancidity and digestive upset, and contain added calcium to prevent mineral imbalance. The primary feature of stabilised rice bran is its high (20%) fat content. Stabilised rice bran is convenient as an energy and essential fatty acid source in the diets of show and performance horses. Finally, stabilised rice bran should be viewed as an additive to a horse’s diet and not a replacement for essential vitamin and mineral fortification.

Lilah started riding at the age of 10 and got her first pony at 12. With a naughty pony that couldn’t jump, she focused on dressage and has done so ever since. Over the years she has been very successful on a number of horses, with achievements including National FEI Junior Champion, Silver Medalist at the Youth Olympics, National Young Rider Elementary Champion, National Young Rider Small Tour Champion and many placings at CDIs. Molly has been riding since she was 4yo when she purchased her first pony for $1. She came home to tell her parents of her purchase and produced a receipt as proof. The pony arrived the next day, with no fences on the property to keep him in! Since then she has become a very successful young rider with her specialty being in eventing. Molly was awarded her Advanced Bronze Medallion from the Westphalian Riding School in Germany where she gained the highest mark for dressage and show jumping. Molly started riding for VEH at 14 when she took the ride on Mayfield Zest. Over the years they have had much success together.

Paddy started riding in the high country of Mt Sterling as a 4yo at his cousin’s trail riding business. He left school at 14 to become a jockey. After a year, Paddy decided for a bit of a change and he turned to rodeo riding. After several years he returned to racing as a jumps jockey. Heading for a bit of a career change, Paddy completed an apprenticeship as a farrier and is now Farm Manager at VEH. He now rides many of our breakers and is turning his attention to showjumping in which we are sure he will be very successful.

FEED&BREED Feed And Breed has been designed for feeding breeding mares and young growing horses.

ONLINE EQUINE EDUCATION A new online equine education venture is about to launch and is offering it’s first course that explores horse behaviour.

The comprehensive vitamin, mineral and protein inclusion help to provide the essential nutrients for the growing foetus in pregnant mares and for milk production in lactating mares. Full fat soyabean meal and canola meal provide high quality digestible protein and have a good balance of essential amino acids for muscle and bone growth, which makes Feed and Breed ideal for weanlings and yearlings and for spelling horses that need to put on condition and re-build muscle. The

Starting on July 14 the first course will provide participants with an introduction to equine behaviour that covers development of behaviour, abnormal behaviour such as weaving and also behavioural principles surrounding learning and training.

are also important for muscle and bone growth and zinc for hoof

Dr. Jo-Anne Murray who has a PhD in Equine nutrition set up the venture. She is also responsible for setting up the world’s first and only online Equine Science Masters program at the Royal School of Veterinary Studies, at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Murray had this to say: “After years of providing degree-level courses online, I realised that there were many people unable to take online courses in equine topics to learn more about managing and working with horses without committing to a degree level study. I set up Equine Education to provide quality, affordable education that is accessible to everyone.” “Its aim was to ensure that participants received excellent educational experience that was interactive and fun and allowed them to learn more about the subjects that interested them” “Best of all, studying online allows people to fit their studying in around everything else they have going on in their busy lives, including their horses!”

the small intestine where it is cleaved into amino acids. If it escapes into the large intestine, it is broken down to ammonia and lost to the horse. If essential amino acids are not provided, young horses lay down more ‘fat’ and less muscle, which is not desirable. Minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and iron growth. Magnesium and calcium also act as buffers, preventing the gut becoming too acidic. Vitamin A is important for growth, reproduction and lactation. Vitamin D promotes and maintains proper bone formation and integrity, in conjunction with calcium and phosphorus. Feed and Breed has been balanced to meet all these requirements.

Feed and Breed contains: • Yea–Sacc®, a live yeast which improves fibre digestion, slows down the fermentation of starch and improves calcium and phosphorus uptake for bone development • Chromium yeast, which helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels and decreases lactic acid production • Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant and is important for the function of the immune and reproductive functions. • Copper, which plays an important role in the formation and maturation of connective tissue (collagen and elastic) and cartilage. • Magnesium, which is involved in the hardening process of bone and is required for muscle and nerve function. • Full fat soya which contains essential fats for a shiny coat. Feed and Breed must be fed with roughage such as hay, chaff and/or pasture and should be split between at least two feeds daily.

Please visit www.riverina.com for more information. Feed and Breed can be supplied in 20kg bags, 1 ton bulk bags or bulk.

LUHMÜHLENCCI4* - as it happened! DRESSAGE: Australia’s Lucinda Fredericks had taken the lead after the Dressage phase at Luhmuhlen. She was hoping to make it third time lucky at Germany’s premier event and the fifth and penultimate leg of the FEI Classics 2013/2014. In 2012 Fredericks finished second on Flying Finish and secured a place on the Australian Olympic team at the London Games. In 2013 she overcame a slow start to the season after a bad fall and finished in 11th place. “This time I’m going to crack on,” promised Fredericks, who retired Flying Finish early on the Cross Country at Badminton last month because he had temporarily banged a nerve. “It wasn’t as dramatic as it looked. He was fine five minutes later, which was frustrating, but perhaps it was a blessing in disguise,” she continued. “My horse feels good, we’ve had a good preparation for this event and I feel we’re due some luck. It would be a great boost for my team at home if we could do well.”

Lucinda Fredericks and Flying Finish - off to a flying start!

Fredericks was the only rider to break the 40-penalty barrier scoring 38.7 on Flying Finish a 12-year-old Holsteiner by Candillo that she bought in Germany. After dressage, she led Olympic, World and European champion Michael Jung (Ger) by 2.8 penalties. “It’s quite difficult to tell how well you’re doing on Flying Finish and I wasn’t quite sure I’d nailed it until after the test,” explained Fredericks. “He is always correct and steady, but every time I looked at the scoreboard I only seemed to be getting sevens, so I stuck my chest out and tried to move up a gear!” The Germans occupied both second and third placings after the first phase, with Jung’s teammate Ingrid Klimke in third on Horseware Hale Bob. Dutch rider Elaine Pen slotted into fourth place on Vira. Fredricks had this to say about the prospect of facing the cross country course designed by Britain’s Mark Phillips: “There is a lot of turning to fences and turning afterwards and not always a lot of room to do it,” she said, “but I’m really looking forward to it.”

OUTANDABOUT EQUINENEWS TRAGEDY STRIKES AT LUHMÜHLEN Tragically, German rider Benjamin Winter was fatally injured while competing at CCI4* Luhmuhlen. The 25-year-old and the 10-yearold gelding Ispo had a rotational fall at fence 20 that resulted in fatal injuries to the rider. Isp was uninjured in the accident. Earlier in the day Winter had gone clear inside the time with his first horse Wild Thing. Benjamin Winter was a member of Germany’s gold medal winning team at the 2006 European Junior Championships. At senior level he won the CIC2* at Luhmuhlen in April. FEI Secretary General Igmar De Vos had this to say about the tragedy: “The entire equestrian community is deeply distressed at this terrible news,” he said. “The safety and welfare of riders and horses is of prime importance at all FEI events, but sadly tragic accidents like this do happen. On behalf of the FEI and the whole sport I would like to express our most sincere condolences to Benjamin Winter’s family and his many friends on the Eventing circuit. He was a truly talented rider who was expected to go right to the top.” A full investigation into the accident has been launched.

JUNG TAKES THE LEAD AFTER XC Germany’s Michael Jung produced a brilliant performance to take the lead in the Cross Country phase at Luhmuhlen CCI4*. Jung has a good record at Luhmuhlen having won the event in his first attempt five years ago and also again in 2012. He was the last rider out on the Cross Country and rode with tremendous flair and accuracy on his inexperienced mare FischerRocana FST. New Zealand’s Tim Price rose from seventh after dressage to second on Wesko. Sitting third was Australia’s favourite German rider, Bettina Hoy on Designer 10 and in fourth place - Britain’s Oliver Townsend who moved up five places on Black Tie. The next three riders were all within a jumping fence of Price. Phillip Dutton ex-Aussie, now of the USA on Mighty Nice, Australia’s Bill Levett on Improvise and Boyd Martin of the USA on Shamwari 4. Elaine Pen dropped four places to eighth on Vira after collecting 4.8 time penalties and is still in close contention in her first 4 star event. Lucinda Fredericks who was in the lead after dressage suffered an unlucky mishap when Flying Finish jumped into the middle of a brush oxer (fence 22). Australian Chris Burton who was sitting third overall on the FEI Classics leaderboard had a fall with Tempranillo in the Jeep water complex at 19. Ingrid Klimke who was third after dressage plummeted to 29th position after a run-out at the brush arrowhead in the arena (fence 10) and a second refusal at the Jeep water complex (fence 18b). Seven competitors retired on the course including Britains Tom Crisp whose horse Liberal died after collapsing near fence eight. Crisp said that Liberal had set out well but didn’t feel right after fence seven and as he went to pull up the horse collapsed. “We’re all very sad, It’s a tough day” he said. Britains Chef de Mission Will Connell thanked the organisers for their prompt response to the incident and had this to say: “It happened very early on the course and was nothing to do with the fence. It was one of those very sad, regretful instances that happen in life.” An investigation into the cause of death is underway.

Tim Price and Wesko - Victorious and finishing on their dressage score!

KIWI TIM PRICE WINS!

Jung - so close!

New Zealand’s Tim Price has won his first CCI4* at Luhmuhlen after an outstanding display of jumping. Price was also the only rider to finish on his dressage score of 43.8 in a thrilling finale. Price was thrilled to win but was quick to acknowledge the tragedy that had befallen the host nation’s rider Benjamin Winter who tragically died in the Cross Country. “I would like to dedicate this win to Benjamin. It was a very sad day yesterday,” he said. “And I’d like to thank the organisers at Luhmühlen for making us all so welcome. I first came here as a visitor eight years ago and I’ve been waiting ever since to ride here.” Cross Country leader Michael Jung of Germany looked to be in control until a big groan from the crowd let everyone know that a pole had fallen and it wasn’t going to a home victory. Even after knocking off 12a, the first of a double Jung finished in second place and is currently ninth overall. Boyd Martin of the USA proved to his nations selectors that he has fully recovered from a broken leg after finishing third on his new ride Shamwari 4 and 15th on Otis Barbotiere. Britain’s Oliver Townsend finished in fourth place despite hitting fence 10 on Black Tie. It’s the second time this year he has been the highest placed British rider at CCI4*. He has now moved into second place in the FEI Classics and is only 120 points behind countryman William Fox-Pitt with one event to go.

The Dutch riders were dominant on their home turf winning by a significant margin at the third leg of the FEI Nations Cup Dressage 2014 pilot series. IN ALL HONESTY - WE HAVE TO STOP THIS. Going to AMAZING events and taking in excess of 5,000 photos to post online is excessive, time consuming, and then leads to the problems as to which photos we should include when really, we want to put them all in. Problem is - we can’t stop! On the following pages you’ll be able to view quite a good selection of them but please, do us a favour and have a look at the galleries we’ve posted on our Facebook - www.facebook.com/thestablemagazine and on our website at www. thestablemagazine.com/gallery. Then we won’t feel so bad about not including every single fantastic photo that was taken!

Now that’s out of the way, we’d like to share with you some of the colour and flavour of the Melbourne International Horse Trials. Four huge days of competition over the Queen’s Birthday weekend drew record crowds to the event - which was a stellar show of talent from horses and riders from all levels. The standard of competition was phenomenal. Particularly impressive were the riders in the Junior 1* class - to tackle those cross country jumps was a mean feat in itself, and they showed plenty of grit, determination, skill and horsemanship out on course. It was a joy to see our young riders make such a go of it. We have some definite talent on the horizon! The excitement of the competition was in the air on the Friday morning when we settled in to watch the 1* Dressage. Not only did the list of competitors include some exciting riders moving up through the levels, but also some of our favourite stars with their young horses, so it was a great chance to have a look at some ‘up and comers’ in both categories. Three star riders in the class includes Will Enzinger, Shane Rose, Katja Weimann, Megan Jones, Emily Anker, Sonja Johnson, Amanda Ross and Adam Benson - which gives you an idea of the talent on show at this year’s Melbourne International Horse Trials - and that was just in the one star class! Friday was non-stop dressage (almost!) from 8:30am to 4pm, with the Junior riders also completing their tests on the polo fields. The one star class continued on day two - to get through the whopping 74 horse and rider combinations entered to contest the honour of first place in the class!

CCI1* DRESSAGE

2014 Melbourne International Horse Trials keeps getting bigger and better - this year, drawing many WEG hopefuls as it was the final Australian based selection competition for event riders. The prize money totalled a whopping $50,000, with $10,000 being awarded to the winner of the CCI3* class. And the prizes did not stop there! The best presented horse and rider in the trot up in each class were awarded a pair of boots valued at $599, and Racing Victoria’s Off The Track program, devoted to the promotion of retired racehorses as ideal pleasure and show mounts, also awarded the best placed former racehorse in each class with a garland. “THE ‘HORSE TRIALS’ COMPETITION WAS ORIGINALLY A MILITARY EVENT, DRAWING ON REQUIREMENTS FOR A TOP CLASS OFFICER’S CHARGE STEADINESS ON PARADE, THE ABILITY TO CROSS THE COUNTRYSIDE FAST IN BATTLE AND BE FIT AND TOUGH ENOUGH TO CONTINUE WITH DUTIES AFTER A STRENUOUS DAY.”

Katherine Johnson & Northern Cassablanca

Interestingly, there were more than 60 thoroughbreds competing across the grades, comprising more than 24% of the total horses entered, showing that thoroughbreds (and indeed, thoroughbred blood is still as highly prized in the competition as ever). International competitors had also arrived on our shores in order to compete. The Kiwis had sent over a team of 2* riders to compete against our own Aussie riders in the Oceania Young Rider Eventing Championship, and, as it turned out, one very talented Thai rider stole the show with a stellar performance in the Junior 1* class - but more on that later! The dressage this year was held outdoors in a ‘European’ style competition, which while we were rained out only a few times - did make for some wonderful photo opportunities. The proud tradition of the Melbourne International Horse Trials lives strong, adding another brilliant weekend of competition to the event’s rich and prestigious history.

The three star dressage kicked off just after lunch on the Saturday. We were excited there were so many horses and riders we just couldn’t wait to see in action. The weather looked a little threatening, but everyone gathered around the polo fields to stake out a good spot before the first class at the top level. We were disappointed to hear that Taurus (formerly Shane Rose’s ride, now in the hands of Stuart Tinney) had apparently suffered a minor injury in the days leading up the MIHT, and so had stayed home - but we still had 20 tests to watch! First up was Sonja Johnson with Belfast Mojito - the incredibly handsome brown gelding who started his career on the polo field. He seemed to be feeling either a little highly strung or a little full of himself as Sonja began her warmup in the arena alongside the competition arena. There were a few bucks thrown in, a few spooks - we hoped it was all out in the warm up, but as Sonja began her test, ‘Mojo’ had a few little episodes in the arena. Not great for her scores, but he is one impressive looking horse! Despite a few little outbursts,

when they finish their test, Sonja is all smiles - although we hear her have a quiet word with her horse at the very end. It wasn’t quite his day, but it was great to see how well Sonja handled it all in good faith! They finish with a slightly disappointing 62.60 penalties - which eventually puts them in 18th place of 20 competitors. Charlotte Price bia & Kinnordy Gam

& Rohan Luxmoore Bells & Whistles

Second into the arena is Charlotte Price with Kinnordy Gambia - a TB/WB mare by Gymnastik Star, owned by Kevin McNab. After a lovely test they finish on 54.41 penalties, eventually placing them equal seventh after the dressage. Next up - Rowan Luxmoore, (a veterinary surgeon!) on his own brown ISH gelding, Bells And Whistles. They perform a lovely test that the crowd really seems to enjoy, and finish in 14th place on 58.61. As Rohan finishes his test, Shane Rose and home-bred gelding Shanghai Joe are warming up. The gelding is by Shane and Niki Rose’s Thoroughbred stallion, Another Warrior, and is the youngest horse in the three star class - born in 2006. They put in a really solid test and end up taking the lead early, although they are eventually bested, they still place sixth with 52.40 penalties. Following Shane’s ride is another Thoroughbred, Church Hill, owned and ridden by Augusta Clarke. They finish with 60.20 to slot in in front of Sonja Johnson and Belfast Mojito, and eventually end up in 17th place after the dressage.

covering stride, and a nice test places them equal with Rohan Luxmoore and Bells and Whistles - 58.61, equal 14th. If grey was a colour change for us spectators, Robert Palm and Visual Laughter made an even bigger splash! The handsome coloured stallion looked good, fit, and fluent as they completed their test. The crowd showed their appreciation for their test at it’s conclusion with lots of applause. The judges also thought it was a good ride, and they snatch first place from Shane Rose and Shanghai Joe. Just 50.40 penalties - could they hold the lead with more than 10 horses still to go? Just as Isabel English is about to enter the arena with Feldale Mouse, the weather takes a turn, and the rain (which was threatening all morning) decided to make good - and the heavens opened! Many photographers ran for cover, but the shower is nothing compared to what was still to come! Isabel and Mouse manage a lovely test and place 13th with 57.80 penalties. Stuart Tinney and Pluto Mio are up next - and the rain persists throughout their test. These gorgeous greys look fantastic against the overcast sky, however while the photos look nice I’m sure the riders were all wishing for some sunshine! Seasoned competitors Stuart on the mare who is no stranger to taking out a three star event - put in a stellar test, and steal the lead from Robert Palm. They incur just 46.01 penalties. Alexandra Townsend and the beautiful bay mare Parodie have the difficult task of following Stuart’s performance. The mare was a little bit fidgety at times but the pair finish on a respectable 55.80. looking forward to seeing this pair again after they caught our eye at Wandin earlier this year. The leggy black Thoroughbred makes an impression with a HUGE and expressive extended trot. A good test - and they slot into 9th place on 55.40 penalties. All of a sudden, the sky turns dark - but there’s a glimmer of something special - a rainbow framing the entire dressage arena. Talk about fantastic photos! Katja Weimann, last year’s 3* winner and BP Cosmopolitan are in the arena next - the gelding looks elegant, and they score 54.41 penalties to equal Charlotte Price in 7th. ...And then the rain starts, just in time for Tania Harding’s test. And we mean RAIN. Not a spattering. A downpour! Again, the photographers run for cover - the only ones not undercover it seem to be Tania and Jirrima Yorkshire. They do such a brilliant job despite the conditions - a really well ridden test, and they place ninth with 54.60 penalties. Now that’s overcoming the elements!

Katja Weimann & BP Cosmopolitan

We break for lunch and it gives the weather a chance to clear up a little. By the time we reconvene, Madison Simpson and Major James are heading into the arena, and the sun is shining. Thanks, Melbourne! Way to go for consistency! Madison and Major James have moments of brilliance, but incur 56.00 penalties to finish in 12th place. Next up, Jessica Manson riding her own Legal Star - a grey stock horse cross gelding. There are a few ‘oopsie’ moments in their test, unfortunately, and they finish with 64.20 penalties in 19th place.

Lucy Yeomans & RSB Bluejay

Amanda Ross is next - another test we’d been keen to see, with the chestnut warmblood gelding, William Wordsworth. Their test looks amazing. Fluent, even, pleasant to watch. Following the test, Amanda looks happy too - the crowd love it, and she gives the thumbs up. Eavesdropping on the chatter around the arena, everyone thinks she’s nailed it. But what do the judges think? Pretty good! Barry Roycroft, judge at C even awarded a 72.4%! The others score Amanda lower, however, and her final score is 46.40 penalties - not too shabby at all, although according to the scores, Stuart’s test was .39 penalties better. So close! Up next was Lucy Yeomans and RSB Bluejay - a grey TB/ Clydesdale gelding. Alas, this day was not their day. We got some BEAUTIFUL photos of their test, but, as a few other combinations had found, there was a fair bit of pressure about this event, and for whatever reason, things fell apart a little bit. Bluejay seemed distracted and unsettled, but they kept at it - and we still think Lucy did a great job. Hold your head high - there are two phases after the dressage - and there’s always next time. We see a very flashy chestnut with lots of bling - big white socks and a blaze - canter in to the arena after the bell - it’s Sonja Johnson on her second ride of the day - Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison. To put it mildly - they kill it! An amazing test, Sonja is happy and so are the judges. 44.60 penalties - a new leader, and Sonja’s very happy! Two riders to go - Charlotte Price on her second horse, a bay Thoroughbred named Dustman are up next. He’s a handsome horse and really looks the part of an eventer. Quite a neat test puts them in

fifth place, with 50.60 penalties. To finish the day’s dressage, Stuart Tinney and Annapurna make their way from the warm up arena to the competition arena. The TB/Hanoverian gelding has a lovely trot and the test is professional. The horse is another young one at only 8 years old, and we think he’s one to watch in future. He scores 58.61 penalties and the pair finish in equal 14th. After the dressage, the top three are tight - we were really looking forward to watching how this was to play out!

JUNIOR CCI1* CROSS COUNTRY As we said in the beginning - the Junior one star class was one of the most impressive from a spectator’s point of view. The appreciation we have for these gutsy and talented riders knows no bounds! If there’s one problem with attending the Melbourne International Horse Trials, it’s that it’s impossible to watch every rider in every phase. It was such an action-packed weekend, and we definitely got our eventing fix, we just wish that we hadn’t missed ANY of the action! We spent some time at the start of the Cross Country course, and excitingly, the course started and finished on the polo fields, so even if you weren’t out on course, you still got a sense of the excitement in the air as riders began and concluded their run across the course. The Junior one star class ran just after the 1* class - and the leaderboard for the Junior class was just as hotly contested as the other grades, making for a very enthralling competition all round!

Placed 20th after dressage, Stephanie Hibburt and J Star Bushranger go clear to finish day two in 12th place!

Before the Cross Country began, we tried to stake out the best vantage points for photos as the riders began coming through. Mind you, the course itself (or at least the 3 star course!) was five kilometres long, so running between jumps if we wanted to make our way around the course was a necessity to try to catch each rider over an obstacle. If you were a spectator sitting in the grandstand near the start and finish of the course, you’d have a great idea of what was going on as we were kept updated with each rider’s progress in real time, which was really exciting. Out on the actual course, however, it was easy to lose track of where exactly we were in the program if we weren’t near the massive PA systems announcing the goings on! Trying to work out which course was what also involved a slight confusion, until we realised that the colours on the jump numbers while using the same colours as the courses marked in the program, in actual fact didn’t coincide with the colours for each course... Good thing we’d brought a pen or two.

Shane Rose & Purbeck Diesel

The one star course included the yellow jumps, despite being printed as green in the program. Yellow in the program was the 2*.. but they were jumping the green fences on course. Confusing? No! Not at all! While the CCI1* class was huge in the beginning, five riders were eliminated on the Cross Country course and one retired - leaving the field slightly smaller at the end of day two. Gearing up for the three star cross country was easier than expected, despite having already run laps of the course following the Juniors, 1* and 2* riders around the course. We decided to start in the rose garden - the obstacles looked beautiful, there were three great fences right where we’d chosen - and the excitement grew as whistles were announcing the first horse on course - Sonja Johnson’s Belfast Mojito, who were placed at the bottom of the list after a few little ‘moments’ in the dressage the previous day. The photos we’ve taken pretty much do the talking!

3* CROSS COUNTRY

If you’ve never been out to check out Melbourne’s International Horse Trials before, we highly recommend you go. The horses are so close - if you want action, this is the place! Unfortunately on cross country day there was possibly a little too much action, with quite a number of riders falling off on course. In the three star class, four riders were eliminated on course - Alexandra Townsend and Parodie, Madison Simpson and Major James, Amanda Ross and William Wordsworth, and Lucy Yeomans and RSB Bluejay. There was also one withdrawal before the cross country phase - Stuart Tinney, while still riding Pluto Mio (in second place after dressage) had withdrawn his second ride, the Thoroughbred/Hanoverian gelding Annapurna. Check out the photos and enjoy! You’ll find the results from the end of day two at the end of the cross country ‘chapter’.

Showjumping day dawned, and we were back at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre to watch the horses and riders in the final rounds. It was a chilly morning, and as soon as we arrived the sun was peeking through the clouds, illuminating the showjumping arena in the early morning sunlight. We headed over to watch the last few riders in the CCI 3* class complete the trot up, and then it was over to the polo fields for the 1* showjumping.

Introducing

AN EXCITING NEW FEED BLEND CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR HORSES AND PONIES SUFFERING FROM

LAMINITIS

E

ach season brings its own challenges to the horse/ pony owner. This autumn has seen good rainfall in much of southern Australia, and the grass has responded with some lush growth not seen for many months. Laminitic horses are particularly vulnerable at this time of year because of increased sugar levels in the pasture. Founder or laminitis is becoming increasingly common in both the pony breeds and also our larger equine friends. When these symptoms are diagnosed the challenge for the horse owner is to find a feed that is both nutritious and satisfying for their animal. How can we do this without endangering the laminitic condition further?

GRANNY REILLY has the solution! They specialise in

100-year-old blends with a modern twist. Whilst remaining true to the principle of using best quality ingredients and time proven recipies; they have consulted with equine nutritionists, veterinarians and farriers to address the needs of the foundering equine. Now they have created

104 The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

a standalone founder mix called SOLE MATE. This new mix will help all those suffering ponies/ horses that are afflicted by this painful disease. Granny’s 100 year old blends come together with modern technology to address the multiple issues facing foundering ponies. This mix is also suitable for larger frame horses Intolerance to proteins and sugars, muscle lock (stiffness), dehydration and mineral deficiency are all addressed in the new mix. It is nutritionally balanced, with a carefully researched blend of minerals and vitamins. Ingredients are Post harvest wheaten chaff, sugar beet, apple cider vinegar, flaxseed meal, Lucerne meal, salt, lime, seaweed meal, canola oil and special GRANNY REILLY additives.

This is a stand alone feed requiring no added extras. For severe cases it is recommended that you soak SOLE MATE overnight in double the volume of water. By pouring off the excess water prior to feeding this will further reduce the protein level. For less severe cases simply add half the volume of water and mix for a few minutes. The horse must have plenty of clean fresh drinking water close by. Any severe cases should be under the care of a veterinarian and a skilled farrier. Larger frame competitors, retirees and those afflicted with ulcers have all shown improvement when introduced to SOLE MATE. This pleasant tasting feed that is easy to digest , provides a range of trace elements required by the laminitis patient. The roughage to protein ratio has been calibrated to enhance recovery without endangering the animal further. Sugar levels have been kept low as this is an area of vulnerability in the founder cycle. Too many of the packaged foods available for our equine friends in today’s market are to be frank, over processed junk food..! The farmers behind the GRANNY REILLY brand do not over process the raw ingredients in their blends and mixes.

s are Granny Reilly feed n grown proudly Australia ned - using and Australian ow gredients the best quality in ecipes. and time proven r Instead their principle is to use best quality ingredients and provide their product with minimum advertising hype and packaging. ‘What you see is what you get’ is a no frills policy running through the company. Based on the Murray near Swan Hill, this family based business supports local farmers and is fully Australian owned. Finally someone has produced a feed that we can safely give to our founder/laminitic cases. By using SOLE MATE you can take the worry and confusion out of the feed equation. After all we all have busy lives and it is comforting to know that there finally is a product that can help our equine friends.

FEEDING THE HORSE

find us on facebook Are you wondering what the best feed is for your horse’s workload? Struggling to get weight on a horse, or fat off a pony? Are you seeing health symptoms that could be related to a nutritional deficiency? Formulating the correct ration for your horse sometimes seems to be part science, part art. Everyone ‘horsey’ has an opinion on what you should be feeding, whether they know your animal or not! Then, when you think you have it all worked out, your underweight thoroughbred turns his nose up at his meal and walks off, while the overweight pony has crashed through three electric fences and is now inhaling your carefully devised ration like his life depends on it. Gotta love ‘em.... At ‘Feeding the Horse’ we want to give you the information you need to make informed decisions about what to feed your animal, whether it’s a Shetland weanling or a Clydesdale retiree, or anything else in between. We will give you the building blocks you need to build the perfect ration for your horse’s daily needs, whilst identifying vitamin, mineral and amino acid needs, and deficiency symptoms.

EQUUSCARENUTRITION EQUITANASPECIAL

WINTER FEEDING TIPS With the colder weather on the way, now is a good time to be planning dietary modifications to ensure your horse gets the energy and nutrients he needs to take him through the winter months. As the temperature drops horses need more energy to keep warm. All warm bloodied animals have a ‘critical temperature’: this is the outside temperature below which an animal must produce extra heat to maintain its own body temperature. What this ‘critical temperature’ is varies from each individual depending on condition. An adult horse with a good covering of flesh and a thick winter coat may be quite comfortable down to a much lower temperature than an older, thinner animal with a finer coat. This horse is going to need extra energy to keep warm at a higher outside temperature than the first. Horses require about 15-20% more feed for every 5-6 degrees the outside temperature falls below their ‘critical temperature’. If you have a horse that is a hard keeper it is a very good idea to try and get extra condition on him before the colder weather is upon you. Remember that it takes an extra 4000 calories (16,747 kilojoules) above maintenance needs to gain 0.45kg of body weight.

So what should we be feeding in the winter months?

GOOD QUALITY HAY Hay should be the cornerstone of any well planned diet, and consider upping the quantity in the winter to 2% of

overall body weight. This would be 10kg of hay a day for a 500kg horse. A horse needs an absolute bare minimum of 1% of body weight of roughage to maintain digestive function, and requirements increase with workload:

• 1.5-2% of bodyweight for maintenance • 2-2.5% of bodyweight for light to moderate work • 2.5-3+% of bodyweight for heavy and very heavy work Also be aware that up to 20% of hay can be wasted when fed on the ground so consider using a hay feeder to reduce wastage. Hay is digested through fermentation in the hind gut and this process itself generates heat which helps to keep the horse warm.

CLEAN DRINKING WATER Horses must be encouraged to drink,

especially if you have increased hay intake, to reduce the risk of impaction colic. (This occurs when digested contents are too dry and get stuck in the ‘bottlenecks’ of the digestive tract). Horses should be consuming at least 38 litres a day with increased hay intake. To illustrate this further, grazed pasture grass might be 20% dry matter and 80% water – but when this same grass is cut, dried and made into hay its composition may now be 80% dry matter and only 20% water. Add salt to hard feeds or ensure there is a salt lick in the paddock to encourage drinking. If you are in an area that is getting very low night time temperatures, make sure any ice crust is broken so horses can access the water beneath. Ice cold water is not all that attractive and can exacerbate dental pain so you may need to consider providing your horse with lukewarm water in buckets on a regular basis.

www.equuscarenutrition.com.au HARD FEEDS There are 2 things to look for in your choice of hard feed: overall energy and fibre content. Many of us hard feed to meet the additional energy needs of our horses in the winter, but a hard feed such as rice bran or Speedibeet also provides additional fibre which is digested in the hind gut through fermentation, helping to keep the horse warm.

FAT If you are really struggling to get enough calories into your horse to keep his condition, consider adding oil to his ration. Horses can tolerate up to a cup per feed (and up to 2 cups per day), but as with all dietary changes introduce this gradually. Oil is very dense in calories so can be helpful especially with hard keepers and older horses that struggle to get through their meals.

SUPPLEMENTS Horses on poor quality forage will likely need supplementary vitamins, minerals and protein to meet their maintenance/work needs. What exactly their requirements are will be based on the overall balance of their diet. Be aware when hard feeding grains (oats, corn, barley) that whilst these may meet your horse’s additional energy needs they do not offer adequate protein, vitamin and mineral levels. Avoid supplements that are high in iron as this is rarely deficient in the diet, and can restrict absorption of other minerals such as copper and zinc which your horse may very well need.

To help work out your horse’s individual dietary requirements have a look at ‘Feeding the horse’: www.feedingthehorse.com.au

HORSEMANSHIP >> HORSEMANSHIP

Conf idence is...

TRUST

I speak to a lot of people about their horses on a weekly basis, and one of the common things we talk about is a confidence issue. Often this issue is not about a particular ‘action’ by the horse the current owner has - most of the time it is due to a previous fall (often off a different horse), or, due to time off after having kids. It is a very common ‘phenomenon’ if you like and usually is not related to actually taking a break or having time away from riding, but nature stepping in, and kicking those mothering instincts into overdrive - you now have a higher need for self preservation, as you have little people that you need to take care of. I have seen this cause people to give up riding altogether. You may not be able to reclaim the confidence of your teen years - soaring over the cross country jumps without a care, jumping on any horse offered, or racing your friends along the beach, but you can reclaim the confidence you need to enjoy your horse once again. In my opinion, confidence is a double sided coin - you need to be able to trust your horse, so you can go for a nice quiet ride, and he needs to be able to trust you so he can give you that ride. Taking a new approach to your horse, and building a set of skills and exercises that you can go through, to allow you the time to read your horses body language - and he yours, can help to establish a happy ‘start’ to a ride. Knowledge is power, and having the knowledge to read your horse, determine what he needs, execute the exercises and arrive at a good place will set you up for success and confidence. What if you had the knowledge to run through a set of drills before riding which would allow you to read your horses attitude for that day ? Would that help you be more confident each ride ? If you found that your horse was a little boisterous on a particular day - and you had the tools to help fix that, would that help ?

Ask Tanja...

I can give you the answer - and thats yes. And I can also tell you that your horse will be happier for it! Can you imagine what it is like for him to be a little fresh, and you arrive at the paddock for a ride, take a look at him, realize he is fresh, lunge him until he’s sweaty, and then hop on and grip on for dear life - and here is your horse thinking ‘geez, there must be something scary around here, because mum sure is hanging on tight today’ - I better prance around to show her i’ve got the energy to run if she needs it, and Id better look around myself in case she doesn’t see it coming. You’re smiling right now because that is what happens! Trust is (as per the dictionary) a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something. You need to be able to trust your horse and he needs to be able to trust you! Lets look at those words - reliability - comes through repetition, training and consistency. Truth comes through consistency. Ability comes through training, and strength comes through repetition and consistency. If you knew what your horses reaction to something would be - you could trust him. If you knew what his reaction would be and you didn’t like it you could train him to have a different reaction. If you have confidence issues when it comes to your horse or riding - take the time to sit for a minute and really think about where the problem lies - has he done something ? Can it be trained out of him ? Does he lack confidence in you as a leader - can that be trained ? Is it you who needs some tools to help with your anxiety or fears ? Is it both of you ? Maybe its worth talking to a professional (counsellor, therapist etc). Some people may think that this is an extreme measure but I don’t see a problem with it - If I have a problem with my car, I take it to a mechanic, because I don’t know enough about cars - if i’ve got a problem with anxiety - then I need to talk to an expert in anxiety! Thrush Eze® Hoof Powder

from All Bare With Natural Hoof Care This product was developed after years of trying a multitude of treatments for thrush in the Equine Hoof. ThrushEze® works well on feet that are constantly in a wet environment (rain, dew on grass, etc), or horses that have a deep seated thrush infection in the central sulcus of the frog. After dealing with increased rain and wet conditions, it was found necessary to develop a dry product to aid in the prevention, treatment and control of thrush in the Equine foot. This product is an absorptive powder that is safe, yet effective on thrush. After applying all the traditional wet treatments such as AVC, tea tree oil and various other treatments such as time consuming soaking, none were effective enough on already wet or waterlogged feet. ThrushEze® starts to work quickly...... and it actually works well!!!

PUTTING TOGETHER A

FIRST AID KIT (on a budget!)

So here’s a list of the items we need to put together our complete kit. Where can we find them? Where are they on sale? And can we beg, borrow or recycle any materials to save some money in the process? Possibly! Let’s find out how we go...!

The very first item on the list is the emergency details card. We’ve whipped one up for you to print and fill in. It’s also a good idea to laminate it if possible so if it gets wet, you’ll still be able to read it. What’s that? You don’t need your vet’s phone number because it’s on speed dial? It’s ALWAYS a good idea to have it written down and easy to find - for that day you leave your phone at home or the battery dies. It’s also very handy to have a number of vets contact details on hand should an emergency situation arise and your vet not be able to make it.

PUTTING TOGETHER A

FIRST AID KIT (on a budget!)

Your first aid kit should be as portable as possible, to make taking it with you a simple task. From the tack room to the float and back. Better yet, if you can have two - one for the float and one for the tack room that’s a bonus. Your first aid kit should also just include the items you really need in a pinch, and not every single bottle of topical creams or lotions you have amassed over the years. The idea is to fill your first aid kit with everything you might need in the event of an emergency - so restocking your kit (and keeping things in your kit that are supposed to be there!) is important.

let the shopping begin! Armed with our list we hit destination one. A local feed and produce store known to stock a lot of varied products. Ca-ching! Today was our day, and all First Aid supplies are marked 20% off! We couldn’t have planned it better if we tried! So, items we can cross off the list include:

3 33 x Cohesive Bangades q 35 x Large Wound Dressings q 31 x Bottle of Antiseptic q 32 x Cotton Wool Rolls q 31 x Poultice Dressing q q 2 x Elastoplast Bandages

PRICE: $11.98 PRICE: $10.00 PRICE: $14.95 PRICE: $15.99 PRICE: $21.12 PRICE: $11.44

So, it turns out that we may have been a little eager to get started on this exciting project.. The logical place to start would have been finding a suitable storage container for all of our goods.. So that’s what we did.. second, at a $2 Shop.

31 x Large Plastic Container q 32 x Small Plastic Containers q

PRICE: $8.00 PRICE: $4.00

The two small plastic containers are simply for anything we might need to mix up - antiseptic dilutions, saline solutions, etc. They are just large enough to place a hoof in. The best containers for this use are not made of plastic that will shatter - look for flexible or rubber smaller tubs if you need something for this purpose. Next on the list - a visit to pick up some items from the (human) chemist, including tweezers, scissors, and our spare syringes (without the needles!) Syringes are useful to have on hand for flushing wounds and measuring liquids if necessary.

3 31 x Pair of Tweezers q 31 x 25ml Syringe q 31 x 15ml Syringe q q 1 x Pair of Scissors

PRICE: $3.90 PRICE: $3.90 PRICE: $0.99¢ PRICE: $0.50¢

126 The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

Also at the chemist, we picked up some extra small-sized wound dressings, a couple of crepe bandages (handy for holding things in place) as well as a packet of make up removal pads. These are perfect for the application of creams, cleaning eyes and other uses where you require a disposable wipe. As they have a coating, no fibres will come off as they are used.

3 31 x Make Up Removal Pads q 32 x Crepe Bandages q

q 5 x Small Wound Dressings

PRICE: $6.95 PRICE: $2.99 PRICE: $9.38

Next stop - a supermarket for those items that we hadn’t managed to cross off the list...

3 31 x Spray Bottle q 31 x Packet of Salt - 1kg q 33 x Tea Towels q 31 x Torch q 31 x Pack of Spare Batteries q q 1 x Roll of Duct Tape

PRICE: $2.99 PRICE: $3.69 PRICE: $1.93 PRICE: $8.97 PRICE: $8.98 PRICE: $4.99

Last on the list was a trip to the local saddlery, to pick up a few essential items...

3 31 x Digital Thermometer q 34 x Leg Bandages q 31 x Pair of Wire Cutters q 31 x Antibacterial Ointment q q 1 x Hoof Pick

PRICE: $1.99 PRICE: $16.45 PRICE: $9.99 PRICE: $14.99 PRICE: $21.95

And all that was left was to raid the hallway cupboard for some old towels that would be given a new job! Check!

q 3 x Large Towels

PRICE: $FREE!!

6MM HACKAMORE & 12MM MACATE REIN

The Hackamore is constructed using 6mm double braided polyester yachting rope. It is made in the same way as the knotted headstall but with extra room under the chin allowing for attachment of the Macate Reins. The rein consists of a continuous 22ft (6.7m) length of rope with a tassle on one end and a high quality leather popper on the other end. When attached correctly to either the hackamore or your own bridle, it creates 3m reins and a 12ft (3.6m) lead rope coming from the near side of the horse.

THE LATEST & The Stable Magazine’s m SLOW FEED HAYNETS The concept of slow feeding is relatively new and there are now many versions on the market. There are many advantages to using a slow feeding system for managing your horse. Horses in their natural state evolved to constantly forage and graze throughout the day and night. In fact they should be eating for 18-20 hours a day. However in a domesticated environment, horses are usually fed once to twice a day. This has many negative consequences for the horse. How often do you throw your horses a biscuit of hay and it has been vacuumed up entirely within half an hour, so what does your horse do for the next 11 ½ until his next feed? Slow feeders slow down the rate of consumption and therefore closer replicate natural grazing.

OPEN NUTRITION Open Nutrition Pro Joint is pound for pound the PRO JOINT strongest equine joint supplement ever made. 100% Pure Joint Formula - NO FILLERS! The majority of horses experience soreness in the joints at some stage, whether they are elite racing athletes or simply used for recreational riding. Regular strenuous exercise can injure the cartilage, which has a limited ability to repair and re-build due to the relatively inefficient nutrient supply. When damage occurs the cartilage surface can over a period of time without treatment become rougher as stress and general wear and tear take their toll.

Open Nutrition’s Pro Joint can prevent the onset of joint diseases and improve mobility and flexibility to horses suffering with it. Daily administration can reduce the chances of damage occurring.

PER 38g DAILY SERVE

THIS IS A REALLY EASY PROJECT THAT CAN BE

DONE BY USING THINGS

YOU CAN FIND WITHOUT SPENDING A CENT!

I STAINED THE TIMBER

UNPAINTED AND STILL LOOK GREAT!

WHAT YOU NEED:

1 A piece of timber 1 Small cat food or tuna cans 1 Nails or screws 1 2 cup hooks or screw eyes 1 Baling twine or rope.

I’VE USED A LEFT OVER PIECE OF FENCING TIMBER THAT IS 65CM LONG. THE WOOD CAN BE ANY LENGTH THAT ALLOWS YOU ENOUGH SPACE BETWEEN THE CANS TO HANG f this YOUR BRIDLES EASILY. he s i z e o

HOW TO:

1.

Sand the timber just enough to take the edges and any rough areas away.

2. HINT!

If you want to paint the wood but only have flat interior wall paint, make a paint wash that will colour the timber but still show the wood grain. All you need to do is thin the paint with water. Apply test patches to the back of your wood with a cloth until you have the effect you want. 138 The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

Stain or paint the timber with whatever paint you may have in your shed.

3.

Put a nail or screw in the centre of the bottom of each can. The nail has to be the depth of the can plus 2 or 3 centimetres so that it attaches the can securely to the timber. With the nail all the way through, paint the cans – this way the head of the nail is painted as well as the can.

4.

When the paint has dried position the cans evenly on the timber, then nail or screw them in place.

5.

Screw in a cup hook or screw eye at each end of the top of the bridle holder, then attach the rope or baling twine.

6.

Hang your bridle hanger and add your bridles! Job done! The size of the tins used also means your headpiece will stay in the right shape - bonus! The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com 139

EQUINADE HOOF GREASE Equinade Hoof Grease contains a unique blend of 100% natural

ingredients to help maintain a healthy and resilient hoof horn structure. The natural ingredients include animal fats and oils which provide the hoof with a healthy moisture balance by reducing evaporation in dry weather and preventing over-absorption of moisture in wet conditions. Without regular care, hooves can become brittle and susceptible to disease. This may lead to cracking and fracturing of the frog and hoof, and in the long-term navicular bone damage can occur. Daily use of Equinade Hoof Grease will assist horses to gain healthy hooves which can carry them throughout their careers.

AMANDA LEWER NCAS Level 1 General Coach

I competed state level pony club through to 2* EA Eventing in years as a Young Rider. As I moved into my mid 20’s I turned my attention to starting young horses, concentrating on correctly and confidently beginning their competition careers before selling on to junior, young rider and adult riders wanting safe reliable youngsters to take through the grades. I have trained under many high profile riders, breakers and trainers, too many to list. I adopt a philosophy where I take what works from each coach, rider or trainer and disregard the rest. Throughout engaging with a vast array of not only the elite contingency of equestrians as well as the quietly brilliant unknowns, I have a vast array of techniques and skills to assist the majority of riders.

NERVOUS/ANXIOUS/ RETURNING RIDERS LESSONS WITH SYLVIA GORDON

Photo: Peter Orr/Main Event Photography

When you get on your horse do you experience a pounding heart, dry mouth, fear and anxiety? Despite having huge fears & anxiety, do you continue to ride? Why - because most riders want to return to the time when they enjoyed horse riding and want to experience that feeling again. The good news is there is no reason why you can’t experience the joyous feeling of shared riding moments with your horse again. If you take it slow and put yourself in the right situation, you can love riding again.

The first step is to identify what is getting in the way of your enjoyment. For many riders, they just can’t relax on their horse. It could be that you have had a bad fall and are finding it difficult to move past this. It could be that riding at speed frightens you. Riders relive their bad experiences and this can make them tense. Knowing that you may be having a hard time relaxing is the first step in learning how to relax on horseback. Once you learn to relax, you’ll enjoy riding again. Horses can tell that you are not relaxed & soft through your body from your body language/position. For example, inappropriate pulling of the reins (hanging on for dear life), not releasing pressure at the right moment, too much pressure for too long, leg aids applied at the wrong moment (gripping with your legs because you are frightened), bouncing around on your horses back because you are tense & stiff through the hip & pelvic area (seat). This can all send confused messages to your horse whereby he is not sure what response you are asking for. This in turn can cause your horse to feel fearful and anxious & respond incorrectly to you.

Once you learn to relax your mind and relax your body through your riding position, you’ll enjoy riding again. My main focus is on you, the rider. Your position is the foundation of your riding. You can’t ride confidently & with a good position unless you are relaxed. Being confident and comfortable are the cornerstones of relaxation. So how do you get confident, comfortable & relaxed? Firstly, by working on learning (or re-learning) how to position yourself softly on your horses back to enable better balance & independent use of your aids. Working from the bottom (heels down) to the top (eyes up) I will show you how to feel confident & in control through your position. If you want to throw up every time you get in the saddle, it’s too much to ask that you conquer this on your own. I can help! My area of interest is eventing and I came to the sport later in life after many years of trail riding. I didn’t have a young person’s bullet proof personality or a whole lotta guts. I have had to work very, very hard to overcome my feelings of fear and anxiety, especially when riding cross country. I have learnt a lot through my own hands on experience and I can help you overcome your fears & anxiety & enjoy horse riding again. Facilities include a fenced dressage arena, fenced show jump arena and a training cross country course on our beautiful 18 acre property.

All levels, abilities and ages of riders/horses are welcome. ENQUIRIES: Sylvia at home on (02) 4362 3211 or email me at sylviag@bigpond.net.au

JACQUI VAN MONTFRANS OF FORWARD COACHING

Peak Performance Coach & EA Level 2 Dressage Specialist Jacqui has had a passion for horses since the age of 10 when, living on a farm in NZ, she was invited to ride with her neigbourhood friends. Although it took the best part of 6 years to convince her parents it was more than a passing fad (perhaps it was the door knocking for ANYONE to loan her a horse!), suspicion was turned into support and the van Montfrans family continued on a VERY steep learning curve.. From uninitiated novice, to driven competitor, to Australian representative, she followed her love of riding and Dressage around the world, and Coaching was a natural progression. Jacqui’s success as a Dressage Coach and Coach Mentor is borne from her ability to communicate on many levels with both horse & rider, developing a philosophy around the importance of developing a connection with the Horse, as well as increasing Rider awareness. Her students in the Dressage, Show Jumping, Show

Horse and Eventing Arena’s have attained National success, Squad selection, and Overseas experience. Others have also continued on to become successful Coaches in their own right, or have simply grown to enjoy the personal challenges and satisfaction derived from gaining better insights into the horse and an understanding of their own riding. More than a Dressage Coach, Jacqui has taught riders from many corners of the Equine Industry...Polo, Polo Crosse, Western, Stockhorse, Pleasure Riders, Stuntmen and Movie extras! Although you will always continue to see her coach Dressage, Jacqui has, over the last 23 years, evolved her Coaching to extend into more specialized fields. Having studied Business & On-Line Marketing and attained a Diploma in Performance Coaching, Jacqui is focused on developing on-line Education Programs for Coaches and StartUp businesses, Professional Development opportunities, and of course generating Fan Club status for the wonderful animal we interact and work with…The Horse!

I am an FEI dressage rider who has been riding for 28 years. As a young rider, I was selected to Australian and NSW Young Rider Dressage squads on a number of occasions. From 19 years of age I spent extended periods of time in both Germany and Holland for dressage training. My trainers in Australia have been Harry Boldt, Rozzie Ryan and Clemens Dierks. Trainers in Europe were Rick Klaasen, Marion Wilimzig (George Theodorescu), Matthias Vatter. (Klaus Balkenhol) and Coby Van Baalen

During my European visits I became well aware that many of the top riders also travelled to Fitness Coaches to assist in strengthening their riding weaknesses and improve their cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. Consequently, on my return to Australia I decided to undertake the relevant qualifications to assist riders obtain their optimum riding skill and achieve their goals. I have worked in one of the larger Newcastle gyms as a Fitness Trainer assisting people from varied backgrounds to improve their health and regain their fitness.

EQUINE INSURANCE Aon offer a broad range of insurance products specifically designed for equine associations, businesses and individual owners. Our specialist team have a wealth of experience in the Equine industry and as horse owners themselves, understand the importance of making sure you have the right protection should the worst happen. Whether an association, business or hobby the team can tailor a solution to meet your needs ensuring you don’t pay for the cover you don’t need and allowing you to make a well informed choice about your future insurance purchase.

Associations & Clubs

Organisations that invite people to participate in their activities have a responsibility to ensure that these activities are free from risk of injury and are as safe as reasonably possible. This responsibility is expressed in legislation such as the “Trade Practices Act” as having a “Duty of Care”. Having the right risk management in place is the key to providing a safe environment for your members and participants to ride. Even with risk management there are always going to be things outside of your control and your insurance policy is your protection in these instances.

Having adequate insurance gives you peace of mind that an unfortunate incident is going to be handled professionally, reducing the strain and financial burden on the club and committee. Why not speak to our team about our bespoke insurance packages for Associations and Clubs.

Business Operators

The emotional cost of accidents on you and your family as well as to each person is impossible to measure, and sometimes the risks associated with an activity are inherent.

But it is also that part of the activity that makes it attractive to the consumer. Therefore protecting your livelihood is paramount.

We can provide covers such as Public & Products Liability, Professional Indemnity, Property Insurance, Farm Insurance, Horse Trucks & Floats. Speak to us today about our Special Offers.

Horse Owners & Enthusiasts

None of the aforementioned would be available were it not for the avid horse lover.

As a Special Deal we are offering 13 months insurance cover for the price of 12 when you purchase horse insurance from us. Flexible options include Mortality only, Mortality and Loss of Use, Personal Liability. We can even provide cover for your riding equipment, veterinary expenses and your horse float.

also up to 70% cheaper than concrete or bitumen surfaces! Brilliant!

“Trough pads have always been an expensive and timely exercise and we have been looking around for a cost effective and simple solution for some time. The Diamond Grids are an easy solution and they saved us over $300 per trough compared to cementing the pads. If we ever need to move a trough, we can pull the grids up and move them to the ? next site. We plan on installing the grids in gateways and can see the potential for using them in cattle yards that are prone to mud. - Wayne Flintham, CSIRO, Lansdown Research Station

The Tail End brought to you by...

Dealing with situations... the way my horse would! If I had to live my life as a horse, things would be much simpler. I mean, if you're being forced to go somewhere you don't want to go, you would get to just plant your hooves and refuse to move, that is, of course, until the proper bribe was offered that was acceptable compensation for said task... Unfortunately there are many things in life that we must do, although we don’t want to. Top of the list for most people would be going to work or school. I mean, I can definitely think of better things to do with my time. Like ride my horses. Or have a sleep in. But apparently we need to work to live. We need to work to pay the bills. And we need to work to support the four-legged equines in our lives. (Hopefully that thought can help you get out of bed in the morning!)

WHAT I DO: Drag myself out of bed to the sound of a blaring alarm, crack a caffeinated beverage as soon as humanly possible, and soldier on, resisting the temptation to ‘chuck a sickie’ and thinking optimistic thoughts that quickly turn cynical.

WHAT MY HORSE DOES: Probably rolls over in her comfy stable and dozes off for another half hour. Time? Appointments? Work? Nope - none of that in the life of a horse. It’s all apples and carrots, playing in the paddocks with my friends, and getting groomed and fed while being fussed over by an adoring owner. If the adoring owner decides it’s time to go to the 160 The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

arena, the horse can use one of a number of ‘coping mechanisms’. Option A involves the hoof planting and flat out refusal. Option B is pretending to be so frightened that the rider dismounts. Option C involves forcibly removing the rider from the saddle. Work? Not today! So that’s work covered. What about a holiday? ‘Great!’ you say. ‘Exotic Destination?’ Check! This typically involves an inoculation or two. Not keen on needles? Either are most horses.

WHAT I DO: Grin and bear it. Occasionally there’s some hyperventilating, but I’ll get through it. Unfortunately, we can see the consequences. No overseas holiday. Possibility of infectious disease taking hold.Oh, ok. I’ll roll up my sleeve.

WHAT MY HORSE DOES: Run backwards. Then forward. Sideways. Rear up. Land on vet. Why oh why are the best methods of sedation INJECTED?! Does something not seem wrong with this picture? Perhaps if I could use pure brute force to get out of having an injection I’d stand a chance.

SPOTLIGHT It’s been a while since I’ve had nightmares or any kind of fear of the dark. In fact, quite a long while! But I still remember, as a kid, rushing back to my bedroom after getting a glass of water, feeling my way down the hallway terrified that something (or someone!) was going to jump out and get me! Well.. your horse thinks the same sometimes!

AMAZING SHOW HUNTER

PONY 14hh 4yo Bay Gelding $26,000

New South Wales

WHAT I DO: Well - these days I’m only frightened when I think something is terribly wrong, or if a movie I’m watching gets a little too intense. In that case, deal with it and move on!

WHAT MY HORSE DOES: Jump. Most often either straight up in the air, or, if I’m unlucky, in my direction. Snort heavily and refuse point-blank to approach the scary rustling bag that actually contains a carrot. If they must walk past, it’s the ‘I’m-so-not-looking-at-thatand-I’ve-got-to-run-past-really-quickly’ dance with the ear turned to one side and the head on a 45˚ angle. You know the one!

The other thing that I WISH I could take my horse’s example on is people I’m not particularly fond of. I mean, in life, you just have to deal with them, right? That annoying co-worker? Absolutely 100% certifiably insane previous employer? Even snotty riding school instructors! And as we grow up, we realise it’s not just name-calling and hair pulling, some of these people are playing serious mind games! As an adult, we sort of have to suck it up and deal with the situation, be civil, rational and sane (and all manner of other boring things) lest we ‘chuck a tanty’ and ruin our reputation for life...! Would my horse stand for that? I think not!

WHAT I DO: Choose to ignore it, and be the ‘bigger person’... while internally plotting their untimely demise! Often there’s a lot of bitching and moaning about the situation to anyone who will listen and be sympathetic to my cause. Cheeky revenge tactics are discussed, however never implemented.

WHAT MY HORSE DOES: The response to someone my horse decides she doesn’t like isn’t always textbook. Sometimes it’s a look of complete disdain, as though she now no longer has any faith in me for allowing this despicable person onto the property. Other times, she will make her distaste widely known - and sometimes, this involves the use of her teeth.

Which brings me to my next point.. Who the hell decides what’s fashionable and what’s not anyway? My horse would have two banes of contention with this topic. The first - why is ‘thin’ so ‘in’? And WHY? Why should society dictate to me what my healthy weight range is?

WHAT I DO: Watch what I eat. Avoid junk. Worry about the size of my clothes, and freak out whenever my jeans come back out of the clothes dryer. *Realisation moment* - followed by a sigh of relief!

WHAT MY HORSE DOES: Diet? Skinny paddock? What’s that, and where is my dinner? Secondly, on the topic of fashion - (the four or five fashionistas who also love horses, please disregard) but why the hell do we bother wearing clothes that are uncomfortable? Because they look cool? Who says they look ‘cool’, and why must we torture ourselves for the sake of being up with the latest trend? My horse definitely has a swift reply for his uncomfortable items of clothing...

WHAT I DO: Wear the uncomfortable jacket because it ‘looks nice’, pulling at it all day so it is sitting right, only to find that raising my arms wearing said jacket is not an option unless I’d like my stomach exposed. Couple jacket with foot-breaking soul crushing heels that look so amazing I forget how bad they were to wear last time EVERY time I put them on.

WHAT MY HORSE DOES: Go NAKED! If it’s uncomfortable, scrape it off on the nearest tree! Note: I’m not so sure that in this particular case that taking a leaf out of my horse’s book should or would be advisable. In fact, it may be considered illegal in certain circumstances and could lead to a possible criminal conviction.

So.. perhaps the horse’s example is not the most practical one to follow. Pity though - they seem to have it all worked out!
