KENTUCKY EQUINE RESEARCH - NUTRITION NEWS
MAKING SENSE OF
Supplements S
orting through the numerous supplements displayed on the shelves of your local feed store or in the pages of your favorite horse magazine can be difficult. As an equine nutritionist, it is sometimes difficult to figure out the intended purpose of certain supplements and why it is that people have chosen to feed them. The most common supplements fed are nutrient supplements. A nutrient is a substance that is required in a horse’s diet. Nutrients that are typically supplemented include protein, vitamins and minerals. Protein is unquestionably an important component of the horse’s diet; however, most mature horses on high quality grass hay, and certainly on high quality lucerne hay, are getting plenty of protein in the diet. While heavy exercise, pregnancy and lactation do increase the requirement for protein in the mature horse, sufficient protein is likely to be supplied with feed that is given to meet the increased energy required by these horses. Vitamin and mineral supplementation is very common in horse diets. Many of these vitamins and minerals are necessary to balance regional nutrient deficiencies in hay or pasture. Over-supplementation of some vitamins and minerals can be harmful. Care should be taken when supplementing vitamin A or D and the minerals selenium and iodine. Oversupplementation of other vitamins, such as vitamin B, is not dangerous but can be unnecessary and expensive. Common B vitamins supplemented to performance horses include biotin, thiamin, vitamin B12 and folic acid. Common minerals supplemented to performance horses include calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, copper, and zinc. One of the most popular minerals to supplement at present is magnesium. Magnesium plays an important role in muscle and nerve function. Horses
10
that are deficient in magnesium may be unusually spooky and excitable, and they may have muscle tremors or cramping. However, this deficiency is rare because grass and hay normally contain sufficient magnesium to meet the horse’s requirements. Giving a horse too much supplemental magnesium may have no effect at all on nervous behaviour or muscle cramping, and may cause serious digestive and metabolic problems.
natural vitamins that are higher quality than synthetic nutrients and more bioavailable to the horse.
With the multitude of supplements available, common sense seems to be the logical approach to deciding what is right for your horse. Logical thinking dictates performance horses undergoing the stress of training and competition will need some supplementation. Nutrient supplements are a good first choice; however, over-supplementation can be as bad as, or worse than, no supplementation.
KER has a range of balanced vitamin and mineral supplements that have been formulated specifically to meet the needs of a variety of horses.
Rather than supplementing nutrients on their own and running the risk of over-fortifying your horse’s diet and causing related problems, it is advised to find an all-round vitamin and mineral supplement that has been specifically formulated for what your horse is doing (spelling, working, breeding or growing) and feed the supplement at the correct levels to create a balanced diet and meet all nutrient requirements in a simple and convenient way. When deciding to add a vitamin and mineral supplement to a straight forage or grain ration, or when fortified feeds are fed at less than the recommended amount, all round vitamin and mineral supplements in either powder or pellet form are ideal. As well as deciding between pellet or powder type, the quality of vitamins and minerals in the supplement will also need to be considered. Nutrient quality in different vitamin and mineral supplements differs, and some will contain organic minerals and
Vitamins and minerals are essential for any horse or pony and as a horse owner you can ensure your equine friends live a bit longer, are healthier and less likely to suffer from nutrition related maladies and general disease by making sure their nutrient requirements are met and a balanced diet is provided.
KER Nutrequin is a great value all purpose supplement that is ideal for horses at maintenance or in light work.
KER Perform is a multivitamin and trace mineral supplement specifically designed to support hard working performance horses that contains organic trace minerals and natural vitamin E, and KERx Gold Pellet is a palatable nutrient pellet that supplies a balanced level of all necessary vitamins and minerals. Each of these supplements are ideal for feeding on their own for ‘good doers’, combining with a straight grain mix or ‘topping up’ nutrients when premixed feeds are fed below their recommended level.

CITRUS
- A VALID DIET ALTERNATIVE?
Have you ever fed your horse an orange? According to research conducted in Brazil and the United States, horses can be fed citrus pulp - a by product from orange juice as up to 28% of their diet with - and apparently, little was left over following the study, indicating that the five horses fed the cirtus pulp found it quite palatable. (Easy to explain if the study included small well-rounded ponies!) Citrus pulp has been described as “a safe energy source that benefited the digestibility of the nutrients and the carbohydrate fraction – both fibrous and non-fibrous – of the diet.” The citrus pulp is a source of easily fermentable fibres, as are beet pulp and soybean hulls, both of which are commonly accepted feed sources. AUSSIES TAKE SECOND PLACE IN SHOWJUMPING CHALLENGE CUP An all-star Australian showjumping team went to the jump-off at the Chellenge Cup and almost knocked the Americans from their top spot, the results coming down to the wire. Jamie Kermond, Amy Graham, James Patterson-Robinson and Julia Hargreaves placed a close second, behind the USA and ahead of the French team. The competition was open to the nations that didn’t qualify for the Furusiya FEI Nations Cup, but with six teams competing, the competition was stiff. According to event reports, “While the Americans were combining the delight of their win today with their puzzlement about where it all went wrong yesterday, there was nothing but positivity oozing from the Australians at this afternoon’s post-competition press conference. They came out of nowhere to test the very best, and they have every intention of building on that.” Go Aussies!

This brand spanking new festival has something to offer everyone - no matter your age, shape or shoe size! Unbridled celebrates all that is wonderful about our four-hoofed friends. Even better, the festival is bringing the party with fantastic music and delectable food. Unbridled 2014 will take place through the whole day, and into the night, on Saturday November 15th. The festival will honour the majestic glory of the horse and all it has to offer - with a multi faceted equine program including performances, demonstrations, workshops and classes run by industry professionals and clinicians. Unbridled celebrates the horse for its pure beauty and its place in our history. But this isn’t just any old “horse fest”. There’s also going to be an impressive music and entertainment program, and a “Grand Bazaar” food and craft market teeming with delicious, enticing and sparkly sights and smells! The Unbridled 2014 program is going to be packed! The festival will showcase a dizzying array of horse sports and performances, including jousting, mounted archery, barrel racing, horseball, mounted games, horseboarding and a jaw dropping horse spectacular! There will also be demonstrations from a brilliant array of equine experts, as well as plenty of opportunity for festival attendees to get ‘up close and personal’ with a range of horses breeds in the Unbridled Breed Pavilion. The little ones have also been thought of, with the HorseWyse Neigh’bourhood Kidz Zone featuring heaps of hands-on activities, craft sessions and a human show jumping course. Of course, Unbridled is about more than just the horses! The festival has put together a jam-packed music program which will run into the wee hours of the night. Busby Marou, who are quickly becoming live performance legends in Australia, will be headlining a brilliant musical line-up of established and emerging Australian artists. To round the whole festival off, the Grand Bazaar Food & Craft Market will be overrun with delicious international foods, local and national artists and crafters, and a huge variety of equine gear and apparel.

A LIST OF

HORSE FACTS
The word ‘chivalry’ came from the French word ‘cheval’ - meaning horse. The brain of a horse weighs about half as much as the brain of a human. Every zebra’s coat pattern is unique, much like a human’s fingerprints. 9-12 months is around how long it takes for the horse’s hoof to grow from the coronet band down.
In the optimised version of The Stable, this video plays on screen. To view this clip, visit: http://youtu.be/2tlsmV7JfF8
Horses ears can rotate 180º to allow them to listen to sounds coming from behind them. 16 muscles control each of the horse’s ears. Arabian folklore states that chestnut horses are the fastest and the bravest of all horses. While we know that red cars all go faster (!) - other old horsey tales say chestnuts are firey and spirited, and that the horse to avoid most is a chestnut mare.

Les Etoiles de Pau (FRA) marks the beginning of the new FEI Classics season and is the first of the series that links the World’s six CCI4* events. An elite group of riders gathered for this year’s event, including last season’s winner William Fox-Pitt (GBR). In total there were 35 entries from 10 countries.
DRESSAGE
After the completion of the Dressage phase it was neck and neck with two of the world’s best riders Ingrid Klimke of Germany riding 10-year-old Horseware Hale Bob and Britains William FoxPitt riding 14-year-old Parklane Hawk sharing the lead. They were the only two riders to score below 40 penalties and finished with 39.3 penalties apiece.

Ingrid Klimke (GER) and Horseware Hale-Bob competing in the dressage phase “My horse, ‘Bobby’, has proved he can do the CCI4* distance when he completed Luhmuhlen this year,” she said. “He is sharp and clever and I’m looking forward to riding him across country.”
- INGRID KLIMKE Fox-Pitt was also sitting in 5th position on Seacookie with whom he won the event last year. “I couldn’t split my two horses,” he said. “Seacookie has got good memories of Pau and when he feels confident, he can do anything. ‘Parker’ has had a few issues this year and has missed some runs, but he is on good form. The only problem is that he is a strong, fast horse and I am wondering whether I will be able to hold him on the Cross Country.”
CROSS COUNTRY Ingrid Klimke kept up her lead following the Cross Country phase and put herself in a great position to win her first ever CCI4* event after a superb showing. Klimke was cheered to the finish by the large crowd and she came home only two seconds over time, which gave her a fence in hand leading into the Jumping phase. “It was a very challenging course with lots of places where you could run out, but it was wonderful to ride,” said a delighted Klimke. “I am very proud of my horse because it’s his first year at CCI4* level and he had two run-outs at Luhmühlen. “I knew I had to remain very focussed, but Bobby is clever so I could take the lines I wanted. I know tomorrow’s Jumping will be big, but that’s great for me because he’s a big scopey jumper. And what is even better is that he is my own horse, so I am hoping that he will have a wonderful future.” >

L: Joseph Murphy (IRL) and Electric Cruise R: Andreas Dibowski (GER) and FRH Butts Avedon Irish rider Joseph Murphy was the hero of the day and was the only rider to compete with two horses. He finished the phase in second and fourth. “Both my horses are very good jumpers and had great experiences today, but they are very different,” said an elated Murphy, who is on the brink of the best CCI4* result of his career. “Electric Cruise travels at a good cruising speed, but he’s very careful. He’s a special horse. I enjoyed my first round as well – once I’d jumped fence 4! The only problem was that I knew I had to do it again, but I think that stood me in good stead. It was a real rider’s course, definitely more technical than last year.” While Murray made the going look easy, other riders weren’t quite as fortunate. Both William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell (GBR) pulled up their first rides. Fox-Pitt retied Seacookie at fence 6 with Funnell and Mirage D’Elle falling foul of the sharply angled corner at fence 4. This notoriously difficult obstacle, where the direct route is approached “blind” after a tree, also claimed New Zealand’s Jock Paget (Shady Grey) and Britain’s Francis Whittington (West Side) as victims.
Ingrid Klimke (GER) and Horseware Hale-Bob
Fox-Pitt later had to withdraw his joint Dressage leader, Parklane Hawk in a day to forget for last seasons champ. There were 22 completions and 15 clear rounds from > the 31 Cross Country starters.

SHOWJUMPING Leading from start to finish Germany’s Ingrid Klimke claimed her first CCI4* victory. After getting off to a great start and sharing the lead after Dressage the popular German never looked back. When, to great disappointment, Joseph Murphy’s (IRL) Electric Cruise was eliminated at the final Horse Inspection, Andreas Dibowski (GER) and FRH Butts Avedon moved up into the runner-up spot. Their two fences down did not affect their placing, and meant that Klimke was handed a three-fence advantage, but the spring-heeled Horseware Hale Bob only hit one rail, on the triple oxer. Murphy did earn somewhat of a consolation prize though after knocking three rails down to finish fifth on Sportsfield Othello. It was clearly a challenging course that tested both the horse and rider. There were only three clear rounds from the 19 finishers. Arnaud Boiteau (FRA) with Quoriano ENE HN and New Zealander Jonelle Price on the pretty grey mare Faerie Dianimo produced two of them, moving up > into third and fourth places respectively.

“This was a pure show jumping course and you needed an adjustable horse for the varying distances, which wasn’t easy the day after a 12-minute Cross Country course,” said Klimke. “Often the Jumping phase is my biggest fear, but this time I had no worries because I knew my horse is a great jumper.” Klimke was clearly thrilled with her first CCI4* win: “Let’s drink to that!” she said. “I have loved my visit to Pau – it’s a wonderful event with a wonderful crowd.”

EDUCATION
The Education Program is a key feature of each EQUITANA and one of the main reasons visitors travel from all over Australia and overseas to come to the event. The program offers the unique opportunity to meet and learn from a diverse range of highly respected Australian and International equine experts, all in one location. EQUITANA provides displays, seminars, interactive question and answer platforms and training demonstrations that cover a range of subjects including: English and Western sports, equine health and care, natural therapies and horsemanship. All presented in purpose built demonstration arenas and a specialised classroom to ensure that visitors get the most from their education experience. Download the education & competition timetables at http://www.equitana.com.au/education
THE WAY OF THE HORSE Proudly supported by Horse and Country TV
The Way Of The Horse (TWOTH) – Australian Horsemanship Challenge is a three-day, young horse “starting” contest that is unique in this country. During the challenge, three of Australia’s leading horse trainers demonstrate their highly personal and specialised methods of connecting with an unbroken horse. TWOTH was initiated in 2005 by EQUITANA Australia, as a way to showcase a kinder and more caring way to start a young horse, so that it becomes a willing and happy riding partner. The trainers chosen for challenge have the same ethos. This years finalists are Bianca Gillanders, Bruce O’Dell and Kane Lamperd. Don’t miss this incredible event held over all 4 days at EQUITANA Melbourne this year.

ENTERTAINMENT At no other event can an audience be entertained and educated when some of the best horsemen and women in the world all come together in one arena.
Dan Steers and Dan James of Double Dans Horsemanship continue to entertain crowds around the world with their electrifying liberty horse demonstrations, displaying the ultimate partnership between horses and handlers. The two Dans have committed themselves to inviting riders of any skill level to push the boundaries of horsemanship and build extraordinary relationships with their horses. They will commence their program by sharing their proven training tips & techniques about Liberty training after which they will be joined by a group of special guests including Charlotte Dujardin (Dual Olympic Gold Medal Dressage Champion), Dirk Schrade (German Olympic Eventing Medallist), Lynn Palm (US Clinician and Western Dressage competitor) and Warwick Schiller (International Reining Competitor & Trainer). Can you imagine any more knowledge in one arena at any time? To top it off there is nothing like a bit of horse swapping and copying each other’s manoeuvres to turn a select group of seasoned professionals into gungho teenagers again. Whilst each discipline normally stands alone, utilizing different breeds, different tack, and different training methods with ultimately, a different resulting horse; our guests will demonstrate how these riders and disciplines can interact with, and often mirror each other exemplifying versatility. After they swap horses each guest rider will individually ride a freestyle performance in their new discipline. The final segment of this special program will see a “Roman Riding Ride Off” between Brett Parbery and Clayton Fredericks. Due to the huge success after having a first go at EQUITANA Sydney 2013, these two are getting serious about claiming the Roman Riding Champion title so don’t miss out on witnessing this fierce, nail biting competition! This afternoon entertainment program for all ages will be the ultimate Finale to EQUITANA Melbourne 2014!

Idolo Tether Tie
Training horses to tie up confidently and safely
T
he Idolo Tether Tie – a tool to help train horses to tie up confidently and safely – is now available in Australia exclusively through Grosvenor Park Products.
Invented by British horse rider and trainer, Roy French, the Idolo Tether Tie uses pressure and release, the foundation of all good horse training. It is designed for use with a longer length lead rope. If spooked, the horse can pull back without being panicked by too much pressure around the head, and stay safely connected to the securing ring. As he pulls back, the rope passes over the central friction bar and the horse feels a gentle, steady pressure. He realises this pressure is nothing to be afraid of, relaxes, stops and takes a step forward, releasing the pressure and rewarding him for staying calm. This instils confidence and the horse gradually learns there is no need to panic.

“The Idolo Tether Tie uses pressure and release, the foundation of all good horse training.“

“If spooked, the horse can pull back without being panicked by too much pressure around the head, and stay safely connected to the securing ring. As he pulls back, the rope passes over the central friction bar and the horse feels a gentle, steady pressure. He realises this pressure is nothing to be afraid of, relaxes, stops and takes a step forward, releasing the pressure and rewarding him for staying calm. This instils confidence and the horse gradually learns there is no need to panic.” This tool can be used anywhere you need to tie your horse, and is ideal for use with the farrier or vet. Manufactured in Great Britain from high-grade industrial nylon, it is strong and durable, reduces head collar and rope breakages and, best of all, eliminates the temptation to use baler twine. Baler twine was once widely used to tether horses but it is unreliable – new baler twine frequently doesn’t break when
needed, while worn baler twine that has been sitting in the sun for months breaks too easily. We’ve heard horrifying tales of horses being injured due to incorrect tethering, many because the baler twine didn’t break. Baler twine used to be made of sisal and would break relatively easily. These days it is made of tough nylon, usually with a four-ton breaking strain, which is far too strong for tethering a horse.

Training horses to tie up confidently and safely One horse-owner said she realised modern baler twine was not suitable for tying horses when her mare pulled back, the twine didn’t break, the stable wall gave way and the mare took off with the stable wall dragging behind her. She galloped madly trying to get away from it until she double barrelled it and the clip on the leadrope broke – the baler twine, however, didn’t. At the other end of the spectrum, baler twine that is weak can teach a horse that jerking his head back and snapping the twine will leave him loose and free to take off. Grosvenor Park Products is well known for having introduced two types of breakpoint safety tether to Australia: the Equitie and the V-tie. Both are excellent products and far safer than baler twine. However, in response to demand from customers the company searched for a product specifically designed to assist in training youngsters to tie up calmly and to re-train horses who had learned to pull back, a product that would also prevent horses breaking free. Alex from Grosvenor Park Products said, ‘We had been on the lookout for a product like this for years, and the Idolo Tether Tie meets all our various requirements. What is more, it has a lighter and heavier pressure setting, achieved by simply reversing the tether tie, which allows you to tailor the product to your horse and the situation.’ Experts will tell you that in order to train a horse to tie up safely, you need to teach your horse to yield to pressure and take a step forwards if he feels the rope tighten, rather than leap backwards. Plenty of us have witnessed a horse tethered who pulls back when he feels spooked, then feels trapped as the head collar tightens, panics and tries to break free. The Idolo Tether Tie not only avoids that scenario, it uses pressure and release to train your horse the right behaviour.

facts
BY ZOE FIELDHOUSE, EQUUS CARE NUTRITION Laminitis, also known as ‘founder’ is considered the second biggest killer of horses after colic. Whilst not necessarily fatal, horses with severe, acute laminitis are often euthanised due to the amount of pain they are in. WHAT IS LAMINITIS? Laminitis is a condition of the foot, but the cause is actually elsewhere in the body. Laminitis affects the laminae within the foot. The easiest way to imagine this is as a Velcro layer between the hoof wall and the coffin bone that holds these two structures together. Laminitis is inflammation and loss of structure of this ‘Velcro’ layer. As this bond weakens the force of weight and movement begin to rotate the coffin bone (the lowest bone in the foot) out of alignment: in extreme cases the coffin bone can penetrate right through the sole of the foot. As the coffin bone rotates, blood vessels get squeezed and cells within the foot get starved of oxygen and nutrients and start to die. Once
this stage has been reached, abscessing is common, as the body tries to expel necrotic (dead) material. Not all cases of laminitis are this extreme. Sometimes horses have only mild laminitis and show no clinical lameness, only subtle deformities in their hooves and a loss of athletic performance. Laminitis can be acute (sudden onset where it is clear that there is something very wrong with your horse) or chronic, an ongoing issue which may have been unrecognised for a long period of time, or that developed insidiously from low grade or even sub-clinical laminitis, or that has evolved from an acute case that was not dealt with immediately or very successfully. >
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com 59
EQUITANASPECIAL EQUUSCARENUTRITION
Horses with metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance are often susceptible to chronic laminitis. Whilst on the surface a horse with mild chronic laminitis may appear to be managing, the adverse pressure on the sensitive structures and tissues of the foot are still there. Over time even the coffin bone itself can start to be eroded away because of this adverse pressure. The longer these structures are subject to damage the less likely it is for the horse to recover full soundness.
WHAT CAUSES LAMINITIS? Laminitis manifests itself in the foot of the horse, but this is a symptom - the cause of laminitis is elsewhere in the body. A common cause of laminitis is carbohydrate overload. Structural carbohydrate, such as pasture, is broken down in the hindgut of the horse through microbial fermentation. A sudden excess of sugar in the diet, such as grain overload or too much rich spring grass, breaks down the balance of this microbial fermentation, triggering laminitis. The excess sugar undergoes rapid microbial fermentation to lactic acid in the normally neutral conditions of the equine hind gut. As more sugar rich feed arrives in the hind gut, conditions become more acidic, with hindgut pH dropping to as low as 4. These acidic conditions favour streptococci bacteria, and the result of the acidic conditions is a population explosion of this particular species. The low pH in the hindgut results in the death of large numbers of other species of bacteria, whose cell walls breakdown releasing endotoxins, exotoxins and microbial DNA into the hindgut. Within the hindgut, further degenerative changes take place. The result is a leaky bowel wall through which lactic acid, toxins and laminitis trigger factors can pass into the bloodstream. Laminitis can be triggered by other illnesses such as retained placenta or pneumonia, and can also be triggered by snake bite.
SYMPTOMS Symptoms can include high heart rate, a bounding pulse in the lower leg, rapid breathing, fever, sweating, colic,
60
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
found fac diarrhoea, or depression. The horse is likely to exhibit foot pain and lameness, especially in acute cases, which may range from shifting weight from one foot to another, a ‘laminitic stance’ in which a horse shifts his weight onto his hind feet to relieve the pain in his front feet, to a refusal to stand at all because of the intense pain.
IF YOU ARE CONCERNED THAT YOUR HORSE OR PONY MAY BE SUFFERING FROM LAMINITIS CONSULT YOUR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY.
DON’T FORGET GOOD NUTRITION! Animals suffering from laminitis are usually put on a carefully controlled diet to tightly restrict the amount of sugar, but the horse still needs essential nutrients, particularly when the body is trying to heal itself. It is often easiest to provide the vitamins, minerals and proteins the horse needs to build healthy hoof tissue through a good quality supplement mixed in with a high fibre carrier feed such as beet pulp. Beet pulp needs soaking and it can be rinsed to further reduce sugar content for particularly sensitive horses
MOVING FORWARD Recovery, even from the most acute cases is possible, but it can be a long process: it takes 9-12 months for the horse to grow a new hoof capsule, fully replacing all of the damaged tissue, and that is assuming no further recurrence. Unless the laminitis episode was triggered by a one-off event (the pony breaking into the feed shed and eating all the oats, in which case you may need to invest in padlocks!) you will need to be vigilant in the dietary management of your animal, understand the conditions which caused the episode, and mitigate against it in the future. Unfortunately some animals are so sensitive that even a small amount of sugar rich grass can trigger an episode, but with vigilance and careful management even the most sensitive animals can be managed and have a life without the pain or discomfort from recurrent, chronic laminitis.

It was a chilly morning at Glenbrae Equestrian Centre when we dropped in to sit in on a lesson
with local Yarra Valley instructor Amanda Lewer and her students - but the freezing wind, and even a few naughty ponies didn’t even come close to dampening the spirits of the gutsy riders, of whom Amanda is so proud. She calls them her ‘Super Ponies’ and the title is very apt indeed. Ranging in age from just 10 to 22, Amanda’s collection of riders is grouped together based on the combined ability of horse and rider. Some horses are green, some riders are green, but all of the students are enthused. Amanda’s teaching style is casual and encouraging, and definitely not about fitting horses or riders into a mould, rather, working with them individually, appreciating the differences in the personalities of her students, and allowing them to learn in a fun and encouraging environment. (Oh, how we wish lessons were like this a couple of decades ago!) While it was still a little too damp underhoof for a cross country session, showjumping lessons in the outdoor arena were in full swing by early morning. The first group of riders consisted of a couple of ponies - and a total of four horses who had at one time, graced a racetrack. Three of Amanda’s students were riding relatively new horses, so it was as much a ‘getting to know you’ session as a showjumping lesson. “Kidlets, come over here!” is the announcement from Amanda, and the riders line up. “Everyone looks like they’re chilled out, how’s everyone feeling? Good? We’ve got a bit of a mixed bunch of riders this morning. What we’ll be working on today is predominantly your position, balance and your horse’s technique.”
68
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
“The aim is to get you all a bit more confident with some of the greener horses, and gain a bit of confidence with some of the greener riders. And at the end, some of you guys who can jump a bit higher - we’ll pick it up. To start off with, we’re not jumping huge.” Amanda then addresses each of the riders in turn, briefing them on what the focus of the lesson should be for them. “Mirella, with you it’s just about getting to know your horse a little bit more. You just have to stay balanced and concentrate on your position. Maddy, it’s really all very straight forward for you. These distances might be a bit big for your pony, so you might have to push her a bit. For her, it’s about getting her to sit and using her back end a little bit more.” “Sarah, it’s getting to know your horse and letting her have a feel of these different exercises and what she feels like to move, and wait and sit up. You’re very balanced, I want you to maintain your balanced position today.” “Milla, with your position, it’s getting you to wait with your upper body, keeping your lower legs underneath you, maintaining a rhythm and keeping Jiminy obedient.” So the horses and riders all go out on the track, and Amanda fine tunes the rider’s positions. “I want a strong lower leg and soft knees! Awesome! Keep pushing your heels down girls, I really want you working on that lower leg. We’re going to warm them up a little and we’re going to be doing some two point work.” The warm up progresses from walk to trot, and it’s time for the riders to go down the centre of the arena over the series of poles. Once the group is trotting down over the poles, it’s time for each rider’s critique.

All of the riders are smiling, and all of them take on Amanda’s advice and improve each time they tackle the course. “Stop everyone, walk.” All horses and riders come to a halt, as Rachael’s horse Aiden decides he’s feeling a bit fresh, so Amanda works with Rachael to get her horse’s mind on concentrating to the aids of his rider. Aiden throws an impressive little tantrum, but Rachael sticks in the saddle - and is unfazed to boot, and more focused on the job at hand - very impressive!
As Amanda tightens the girth, she explains that Mirella also needs to keep a hold of her reins when she’s riding. “You need more contact, kiddo. More contact with his mouth is going to mean you’ve got more success in controlling him.” To give Mirella a feel of the right amount of pressure through contact, Amanda takes the reins to demonstrate, explaining that the rider needs to be able to feel the horse’s mouth, without placing too much pressure on the reins.
“The moment he starts to carry on, bring him to the inside, drive him with your seat - that’s working for you.” Rachael sticks to the plan and Aiden settles, and the lesson resumes. “A little bit more contact there, Maddy. Little bit more active Mirella. Push him forward. Good girl!” “Bigger trot, Mirella! More leg and seat - push him out. Leg, leg leg! That’s better. Now I want you to feel a little bit more weight in your hand, ask for more contact.” As we watch, it strikes us that good instructors are not just great at knowing where changes and improvement are required, but communicating that effectively with their students, and Amanda has a handle on both. Individually working with each horse and rider (and allowing plenty of time to sort out issues and tweak position) Amanda encourages and inspires each rider, and they are eager to please. In fact, they’re even happy to trot continual laps of the arena in two point seat! “Two point seat - don’t let them run. Stay slow. Knee off the saddle! Don’t let your leg swing back too far underneath you.” After working on ‘the biggest trot you can get’, with the reminder of ‘no robot arms’, it’s time for a de-brief and second gear check before the group begins the next exercise. “Mirella! He’s been a good boy - but you can drive a truck through your girth again!”
70
When the riders head back out on the track, the poles change to a series of poles with a small crossbar at the end, “We’ll canter you two at a time, rather than cantering you all at once - that might get a bit wild!” “I really want you to work on those things we just talked about, girls!” “Don’t fold too soon! You’ve got to wait for them to jump underneath you before you fold. It’s a tiny, tiny little crossrail, don’t get too far forward too soon!” Once all horses and riders have successfully completed the bounce with the crossbar at the canter, the exercise becomes more challenging. Amanda sets up an oxer on one side of the arena. The exercise involved cantering the set of bounce poles, circling back and jumping the oxer. >

“What do you think we need to do - how are we going to ride this? What do you think this exercise is designed to achieve? Use this bounce exercise to get them sitting on their bum, get that nice bouncy canter and get them balanced - but then we’re going to have to get them to MOVE out of the circle, because you’re coming down to the oxer.” “So what’s the difference we’re going to get in the shape of the horse when we’re coming out of a bounce exercise to going over an oxer? With the oxer, they’re going to bascule a little longer. So you want to move out of your turn, but not get too low and flat. This exercise helps get power down to your oxer.” “I want you guys watching each other, because you’re going to help me critique on what’s going on. You can learn just as much by watching as you can by riding it. Someone might be having similar issues to what you’re having. Let’s GO!” Amanda spends a bit of time adjusting the canter of each horse and rider, as they move through the bounce and over the oxer. “A little more power, sit her up a bit more, Sarah - that was a better pace, good girl!” “Yeah! Good job, Rach! Sarah - Nice! So much better!” And the students fly through the course under Amanda’s supervision - and this group are an impressive collection of riders. They are encouraged with high fives for a job well done, and it’s so refreshing to see young riders with a real enthusiasm to learn - all of them are very talented. They ask about whether they are on the right canter lead if they’re not sure, they have wonderful independent balance, a soft riding style, and they are all willing to give anything a go. They are certainly not riding push button ponies, either - many of the horses

are quite hot and forward moving, and their gutsy riders stick in the saddle like they have been riding since the day they were born. The connection that Amanda has with her students is obvious. She knows each horse and rider and seems to know the secret for getting the best out of each of them. Plenty of encouragement is given as well as honest feedback, and tips for improvement, and the riders all seem to soak it up like a sponge. At the end of the lesson, riders are de-briefed, and Amanda encourages them to do their own thinking, asking them what it is they should work on, as well as giving them tips to take home. It’s not too long before the second group of ponies make their way into the arena. “The next group is my pony pack,” Amanda explains. The kids are just amazing and the ponies - they are so cute.” Amanda gives us a run-down on each of the horses and riders, again, full of knowledge that only an instructor who takes pride in her work knows. Where the horses have come from, the background of her students, what they are currently working on and what she hopes to improve with each horse and rider pair. In the second group, we have five horses and riders, all on ponies under 14hh - but don’t discount this lesson as one for novice riders! These ponies pack a punch; they are speedy ‘pocket rockets’ with attitude to boot, matched seemingly perfectly to a bunch of very talented little riders. The kids range in age from eight to twelve, and if they’re not going places in serious competition in the future, it’ll only be due to the distraction of boys! >

Tahlia on Jet, the black pony, Scarlett, on Leroy, the chestnut pony, and Tiffany, who is 9, on Cobber.” “All of these exercises are designed to establish position, and the majority of these riders have a good seat. All of these ponies can get a little bit wild, and all of them are great jumpers.” “Ok, munchkins, come over here! Today we’re going to be working on your positions and making sure that you’re very secure but also that you stay straight. We’ll work on obedience with your ponies. We’re going to be working with a bounce exercise. I want to see your reins short, I don’t want to see anyone getting way out of control. “
“Can we jump higher?” asks Scarlett, who Amanda describes as a ‘talented wild child’. The response? “Not until you start sitting up more - no way! You almost stacked it! It’s much better, but you’ve got to sit up, don’t fold too soon.” “Sit up, kiddo! Now! Sit up!” “So much better - good girl! Down over your grid. Sit up and make him wait. You did really well - you sat! Always wait for him to take off - you did well, good girl.” Scarlett’s pony, Leroy, is a chestnut gun of a pony. Amanda tells us that ‘even if he bronced ten feet in the air, chances are that Scarlett would stick it’. “She’s a pretty solid little rider,” - and she’s keen to boot.
“Alrighty, start coming down over the poles, girls! Rising trot. Try and go as slow as you can, keep them straight through the middle or you’ll change the distances. Maintain proper contact!” “Steady - steady..”
A few more rounds over the jumps and Amanda is satisfied, and allows the girls to tackle something a little bit bigger. This group also knows and understands the importance of canter leads, and how to choose the right one for the course ahead.
Most of Amanda’s instructions relate to keeping these super speedy ponies at an even tempo, as their talented little riders pilot them down over the course of poles. There are no heavy hands here; and you can forget the thought of kids wrenching their ponies mouths the next generation of riders are kind and considerate and know how to ride from their seat under Amanda’s tutelage.
If the poles are knocked or fall, it doesn’t make a bad jump. These kids know that the way they ride is more important than if the poles remain in the cups. And when we say these ponies are speedy - we mean it - and boy, can they jump! Picture action packed, impulsive ponies with big scopey jumps, ridden competently by kids who are still in primary school. They are amazing!
They progress from a warm up over trotting poles to the addition of a couple of bounce fences, with Amanda ensuring the riders get their distances between the fences just right, the riders tackling the obstacles in groups of two.

Usually after kids take a spill, tears ensue. Not in this case. Tiff jumps up and is keen to get straight back in the saddle. There’s no hesitation, no fear (or if there is, it doesn’t show!) and she is back to work, keen to conquer the obstacle. Amanda steps in to build the confidence of both horse and rider, removing the top rail from each of the jumps, and walking down the fences as Tiff points Cobber towards the grid. He’s a little hesitant and is still thinking there might be an easier way out, but Tiff is determined, and rides him well. They manage both the grid and the oxer, Cobber still looks like he’s contemplating taking the easy way out (or around!) but between Tiff’ and Amanda, they have him sorted. In no time at all, the pair are back to flying over the jumps as though nothing had happened. And the run down post-lesson? “Kiera - very, very good riding. Tahlia. Ten out of ten for your riding! Back yourself a bit more. Once you’re confident enough, you can start jumping a bit higher. Tiff - you were very, very brave, I’m very proud of you! The pony can jump - and we had a mishap; you won though! Well done!” “Jorja! You stepped up like THIS much! And Scarlett - what do you have to do? What happens if you tip forward? You’ll stack it! You did well today, great riding.” After some high-fives the lesson is complete, riders are smiling, and we’re pretty sure the ponies are smiling too!

Amanda’s introduction to the horse world was through her uncle, who bred Shetland Ponies and Australian Ponies when Amanda was young. “The first horse that I actually owned after the experience that I got with my uncle was an off the track Thoroughbred called Noddy. We went through the grades of pony club, I got him when I was 13, he was 5. I had lots of injuries!” (laughs) “My parents wanted to sell him, but I stuck with him, and we got to Grade 2 Pony Club and then when I just turned 18, I got a position as a working pupil with Heath and Rozzie Ryan (in Lochinvar, NSW). I stayed there for 12 months and got up to 1* under them, that’s where I got my NCAS Coaching qualifications.” How did you find your experience there? “Heath is a hard task-master, but he’s a phenomenal motivator. Rozzie is the epitome of a lady, and she’s probably who I learnt the most from. She is such a classical rider and is very kind and methodical. She took a lot of time with her horses.” “From there, I moved back to Victoria and I competed at Melbourne Three Day Event in the one star with Noddy. We then had a couple of 2* starts, and we were offered a sponsorship, but then Noddy rolled in the paddock and shattered his splint bone and perforated his tendon. And at that stage, I was riding track work, so I’d ride ten horse at the track in the morning, so I’d be up at about 3:30am, ride the horses, then I’d come home and have a 2 hour nap. Then I’d ride four clients’ horses who were all problem horses; I used to get sent a lot of horses with behavioural issues. After that, I’d ride my two horses I had, Noddy and a younger one. And then I’d coach until about 9pm at night. When Noddy hurt himself, I didn’t particularly want to compete anymore, and I ended up joining the Police Force. I became a copper for about 10 years.” Did you enjoy being in the Police Force? “It’s a really good career. But I felt that my place was with the horses. So I kept training and coaching whilst being a Police Officer, I was a police prosecutor for four years
and I ran the Family Violence court at Melbourne. I dealt with a huge array of different people, and I think that’s helped me with my coaching. Now I can communicate on so many different levels. I really appreciate my time in the Police Force, I made amazing friends, life-long friends. It was a fairly volatile type of job.” “Through that, I ended up riding a little problem horse for a friend at work, a little Warmblood/Thoroughbred cross who had a bad bucking problem. He used to buck and hump, and my friend’s daughter had lost her confidence, so she asked me to take him into work, so I did. And we went out to a little Intro comp at the Horse Trials at Wandin, won the dressage by 40 penalties and finished 3rd overall.. because we went too slow cross country!” (laughs) “From there, I sort of went, well.. I should be doing this again. I moved to Queensland and coached and trained up there, but the weather just inhibited me too much. I was up there with the floods, and then every year, it was just flooding. The first year I moved back, it didn’t flood.” (laughs) “So I came back and then I’ve been back in Victoria since last August. I got work at Yarra Glen Pony Club and then a lot of old clients came back to me too, and I’ve just been flat out, helping people with a lot of

problem horses, hot horses, bucking or rearing issues, or rehabilitation problems. I’m just starting to get keen to go and compete again with the young fella, Eli, an off the track Thoroughbred I’ve had since April this year.” Tell us about Eli... “Eli came straight off the track. I think that he has the ability to at least go 1* and then once he gets there, we’ll see how much more he’s got. At the moment he’s got great movement, a beautiful trot, great canter. I had him in work for about a month and he injured himself, he was just being a twit in the paddock and he got a small infection in his tendon. That put him out for a month. He’s come back into work well now, though.” “He’s only 4 and a half, but he’s got a good brain. We’ll just take it steady at his own pace, and he’ll tell me when he’s ready to move up. But he’s coming along quite well. I suspect he will make it to Pre-Novice by mid season next year, and if I could finish him at Novice by the end of next year, then I’d be stoked. It’s a pretty big ask of a four year old, but we’ll see.” Who have been the biggest influences on your riding style or philosophy? “The biggest influences on my style would be Greg Smith and David Lever - Rozzie Ryan, obviously, and the biggest influence recently would be Jacqui Van Montfrans. I can’t speak more highly of her. Her approach to training horses kindly and effectively to a

Grand Prix level where they use their natural ability is nothing like anything I’ve ever experienced.” What is your favourite thing about coaching? “Seeing my clients achieve their goals.” How about coaching kids vs. coaching adult riders? “I love how much fun the kids have, and I love seeing the adults push themselves past their threshold and be brave.” Do you think it’s tricky finding the balance between encouraging riders and pushing them out of their comfort zone? “I don’t find it hard. I think some people might find it hard, but I think I’ve got a fairly good handle on it. I think I understand them, and I don’t ever push them further than how far I know they can go. My number one job as a coach is to keep them safe. So until I know that they’re 100% safe at a certain height or ability, I won’t push them further. I’m currently teaching some really talented kids, but I’m not going to put them up higher until we’ve got better security, better technique in the saddle, better balance.” What can’t you live without? “My most favourite things are my saddles. And they’re both by Pessoa. They’d probably go on the list of things I can’t live without. I just love them. Also, Equissage are brilliant - we use Equissage equipment every day. I know just how brilliant a product it is, especially with

the off the track Thoroughbreds, it just irons out all the hot spots.” When you’re not riding, where would we find you? “Coaching.” (laughs) So what does a typical day entail at the moment? “Oh god! 6am start. I ride two or three horses. One is my own, and I’ve generally got two, sometimes three client’s horses in work,. They’re here for schooling to fix up small issues or for exercise while their owners are away on holidays. I ride regularly for a lady who works full time and she gets me to ride her horse twice a week, to just tick it over. Then by the time I’ve done that, it’s lunch time. Then I’ll generally start coaching by 2pm. I clean my own stable. (laughs). And then I generally coach anywhere from 2pm until 9 at night. And that’s pretty much 6 days a week. When I start competing, I’d compete every second weekend. I’m also currently coaching for four clubs, too - Yarra Glen Pony Club, Koo Wee Rup Adult Riders, Mount Cannibal Adult Riders and Glenbrae Adult Riders.”
Super Ponies
What are your goals for the future? “To successfully help my students achieve their own goals, whether it be just to safely ride around on a trail, or go to the Olympics - whichever extreme they want to get to. I want to compete at an elite level again, on a horse that I have trained from the start, and I’d like to help to find sponsorship for the up and coming young gun riders I have underneath me.” And so our time at Glenbrae had come to an end but we’ll be catching up with Amanda and her off the track Thoroughbred Eli shortly, so stay tuned! Huge thanks to Amanda and her very talented students for allowing us to sit in on their lessons. We had a blast!
AMANDA LEWER NCAS Level 1 General Coach I competed state level pony club through to 2* EA Eventing in years as a Young Rider. As I moved into my mid 20’s I turned my attention to starting young horses, concentrating on correctly and confidently beginning their competition careers before selling on to junior, young rider and adult riders wanting safe reliable youngsters to take through the grades. I have trained under many high profile riders, breakers and trainers, too many to list. I adopt a philosophy where I take what works from each coach, rider or trainer and disregard the rest. Throughout engaging with a vast array of not only the elite contingency of equestrians as well as the quietly brilliant unknowns, I have a vast array of techniques and skills to assist the majority of riders.

EQUINENEWS EDUCATION
FAST HORSES, FAST RIVERS FOR MARCUS OLDHAM STUDENTS A study tour in New Zealand is only part of the education package presented to Marcus Oldham students. If you want an understanding of the equine industry in Australia and be able to compare it with the strong equine industry in New Zealand, then Marcus Oldham is the place to study. Since 1979 Marcus Oldham at Geelong Victoria has offered an excellent equine course with differences which sets it apart from other equine courses. Attracting students from across Australia and overseas, Marcus Oldham is a higher education institution offering qualifications in agriculture, agribusiness and an intensive one-year Diploma of Equine Management covering business management, equine science, practical skills and horse husbandry. This highly respected qualification prepares students well, in theory and practice, to establish a good career in Australia and internationally. Graduates are either sought after by employers or, being entrepreneurial, start their own business in the Equestrian/Sporthorse or Racing and Breeding Industries. One difference in the Marcus Oldham Equine Management course are the study tours within Australia and New Zealand. The Director of Equine Management, Emma Morel, said, “The annual two week New Zealand Equine Management tour is a valuable component of the Diploma year as it enables students to compare and contrast the Australian and New Zealand equine industry.“ Emma explained, “The students have access to some of the top names in both the Thoroughbred and Sporthorse industry. There is also the opportunity to stay on in New Zealand and complete the practical component of their Stud Management module.”
86
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
Emma is very keen on giving the students international experience as it can really benefit their future work prospects as well as exposing them to practices they may not see in Australia. The tour is extensive and varied. Visits included NZ Bloodstock Pty Ltd where students were guided through the auction process, the marketing activities to attract overseas buyers, and airfreight, quarantine, rules, problems and insurance. New Zealand’s first horse physiotherapist Englishborn, Clare McGowan, held the attention of students as she described the specific treatment programs used for different types of injuries, for example, back, tendon, ligament damage and muscle wastage, the benefits/drawbacks of a straight pool, and the acceptance by trainers, owners and vets, of the treatment provided. For students following the equestrian industry, a relatively new operation, Steiner Sport Horses operated by Show Jumpers, Phillip and Sally Steiner, was a fascinating visit. Phillip and Sally compete, coach, train and deal horses. Phillip has been on the New Zealand Show Jumping high performance squad. They ride a large number of New Zealand Performance Horses (NZPH) progeny and sell horse nationally and internationally. The students were keen to talk to Phillip and Sally about career paths, the major source of income, their goals for the business and selling to an international market. Still focussing on the equestrian industry, Bryce Newman, a 4* eventer, along with his wife Michelle, shared how they run their business of pre-training alongside competing at the elite level. Bryce described to the students what they should look for in a future top level event horse.
EDUCATION
R
Marcus Oldham students, Alia Nazri, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Lucy Gunn, Romsey Victoria at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand. All students were fascinated with the visit to Abderry Farm. Topics such as breaking-in, educating and producing racehorses, sport horses and polo horses were covered. Of great interest was Abderry’s business as a recognised export preparation centre for horses awaiting overseas shipment, as they have exported over one thousand horses to South-east Asia, USA, UK and Europe. Horse lovers know that excellent nutrition is vital for the equine athlete and at Dunstan Horse Feed the students were shown horse feeds which are specially formulated for Thoroughbreds at all stages of growth and activity from weanlings through to racehorses in active work. Students were especially interested in the research and trialling of the feeds. A great supporter of Marcus Oldham, Sir Patrick Hogan, owner of the famous Cambridge Stud, welcomed students to one of the most prestigious Studs in New Zealand.
Home to the now deceased Sir Tristram, who holds the world record for the number of individual Group One winners produced, Cambridge Stud currently stand Sir Tristram’s champion stallion son, Zabeel as well as Keeper, Lucky Unicorn, Tavistock and Stravinsky. On this visit students learned about the management practices which have gained Cambridge Stud the reputation as a leader in the stud industry, as well as the important qualities Cambridge Stud look for in potential employees. Student, Lucy Gunn, said, “The New Zealand Study tour was a great insight into the horse population of the North Island. The owners, managers and staff were very friendly and didn’t mind sharing information about their businesses or showing off their prize possessions Thoroughbred stallions.” >

FAST HORSES, FAST RIVERS FOR MARCUS OLDHAM STUDENTS Highlights for Lucy were seeing where Sir Tristram was buried at Cambridge Stud, walking on the Ellerslie Race Track in Auckland, and seeing the stunning gardens and architecture at Waikato Stud. She also thought the scenery of New Zealand’s North Island was amazing.
“The staff were very friendly and willing to share their knowledge. Eliza Park International foaled down around forty foals while I was there and I learnt a lot. I participated in vetting of the mares, prepping mares for serving, foal watch, foal handling, giving treatments to mares and other general stud work. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and working on a stud farm.” Lucy, an equestrian rider, returned to Australia to undertake her stud placement requirement in the Victorian Macedon Ranges at Eliza Park International. “The staff were very friendly and willing to share their knowledge,” she said. “Eliza Park International foaled down around forty foals while I was there and I learnt a lot. I participated in vetting of the mares, prepping mares for serving, foal watch, foal handling, giving treatments to mares and other general stud work. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and working on a stud farm.” A popular stop was the Waikato Stud owned by New Zealand Racing Industry Board Chairman, Garry Chittick and his wife Mary. This Stud is renowned for its high standard of operations and for being involved with research and new developments in the Thoroughbred industry. Discussions examined how methods differ between New Zealand and Australia, and what to look for in selecting yearlings as potential top class horses. The students were keen to hear his views on obtaining suitable staff and the advantages of formal education.
Taking a break from study! Many students are interested in the Standardbred industry and one of New Zealand’s most successful harness trainers and drivers, Tony Herlihy, was generous is his time as he talked about his long career during which he has driven over 3000 winners and won every major harness racing title in New Zealand and Australia. At the moment his stable has around 30 horses in work. Tony was keen to tell the students about the training methods for pacer and trotters and what he looks for in a Standardbred. They also found the rules and regulations surrounding race day gear of particular interest. Other Standardbred issues included AI and its impact on the Standardbred industry, and syndication rules for buyers and sellers. These and other visits resulted in a comprehensive tour which left the students enthusiastic about their study tour experience. So that it wasn’t all study and no play, and being in the country known the world over as the place of excitement, the itinerary included some adrenalin pumping adventures - fancy some white water rafting?

How would you like to turn your dreams into a reality? Well people are doing just that now with a whole new influx of both young and old giving up the traditional career ideas and opting for jobs in the horse industry. Jobs that they are passionate about and jobs they look forward to going to work every day for. What more could you want? In days of old if you wanted to work in the horse industry it would usually only be as a riding instructor, groom, tack shop owner, farrier or vet, the options were limited and the pay brackets were not exactly great! But with the wellness industry just hitting it’s peak, the options at the moment are endless. These jobs have always been around (I’ve been doing mine for the last ten years), but they have really come into their own lately, with mass public acceptance, and as they really require you to stand on your own and be sole traders, you are your only limit to success. They include jobs such as equine massage therapists, bowen therapists, aromatherapists, bodyworkers, sellers of therapeutic products, the list goes on. With so many modalities of equine therapy available at the moment, if this is your chosen career your opportunities are endless. But if you want to stand out from the crowd then you really need to be properly educated in this field. There are currently no government accredited courses in equine therapies, so look for an education provider that offers a course longer than a weekend (preferably at least a year), that is approved by at least one professional body, that has graduates with successful businesses, that offers continuing support and development after you graduate, that is happy to give you names and contacts for testimonials and is fully and comprehensively insured.

“I can’t thank Jessica enough for making this Equine Sports
Massage Certificate available. I had been toiling with the idea of learning sports massage over the last couple of years but the courses offered required flying to another state or only run in WA every so often. Jessica and Equestricare is one
of the most highly regarded therapy businesses in WA and the chance to learn with her was I thought, going to be a
fantastic opportunity. The course so far has not disappointed
me, it is presented in a way that students are always hungry
for more, no boring lectures here! Practical modules are run in a way that anyone can come along and learn the topic they are interested in as a one off. The level of student support is exactly what I was looking for. Jessica is never too busy
to answer any questions or show a technique. I can highly
recommend this course to anyone that is interested in either being a Certified Massage Therapist or just for expanding personal knowledge. There are so many interesting topics to cover. The Equine Sports massage certificate course is awesome!” - Ros Maindok

Are you
Dreaming of Horses? Do you dream of horses? Literally, I mean? Not daydreaming, but actually having horses in your dreams when you sleep? We thought it would be fun to find out what dreams about horses are supposed to mean..... According to dream websites, to dream of horses is generally a positive thing, a sign of well being. People with a hidden talent or passion for something often see horses in their dreams. Conversely, horses very rarely appear in dreams of people who are fearful or not in control of their lives. The meaning of a dream starring a horse or horses depends greatly on the details of the dream and what the horse is, or what it is doing. The significance, I’m told, also varies for different people. When you try to interpret your dreams it has to be in the context of how you are feeling and what is going on in your life at the time of the dream. The same thing in a dream can have different meanings for different people. I wonder if the same level of significance applies equally to horse people and non-horse people. I mean, if a horse person dreams of riding, is it the same as a nonhorse person dreaming of walking, or of taking part in their favourite sport or hobby? Who knows?!
94
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
I’m not sure what some people (by this I mean nonhorsey people) would make of these interpretations of dreams, but I think you would find these two fairly obvious:‘
There will be misfortune for you if you dream of finally catching a runaway horse, but then it gets loose again.
‘A disobedient horse signifies barriers, and foretells of obstacles you will have to face before succeeding. Anyway, I ploughed on, and found some amazing and quirky dream meanings.... >

Are you
Dreaming of Horses ?
ZZZZZZZZZ.... EQUINENEWS
...and the rest!
Dreaming of a dead horse indicates something in your life that once offered you strength is now gone. It is also said to be a symbol of disappointment. Foals are great to dream about – good news is coming, or a happy event you will enjoy is on the horizon. Dreaming of a draft horse is an indicator that you can achieve enrichment, but there will be obstacles in your way.
Ouch...! Being kicked by a horse in your dream is a warning against complacency..... or you may be rejected by one you love.
To dream of a horse trained in a circus and performing beautifully means you have a guardian looking after you. To see a horse in a stable or barn is the promise of a rich and fulfilling life ahead.
Grooming horses
Horseshoes are always a good sign of coming luck and success. To dream of having a horse shod your success is certain, and can also be an omen of unexpected money.
I thought these ones very prophetic: s You are experiencing a burst of energy in some aspect of your life. It s symbolizes the hard work that has to be done to reach your goal. It s is a guarantee of success if the horse is shining after you’ve finished.
So there you go. If you commonly dream about the everyday things in your life, and horses feature because they’re part of it, you should feel better in the knowledge that all that riding and grooming you do in your sleep will pay off with future good luck and riches. Sweet dreams!

As a coach I hear some terrible things that people say to themselves when they are riding and I always pull them up, but we need to be aware of the language that we use, and actively practice changing it. Not only does this negative self talk not serve us at all, but it impacts on us being able to improve at a faster rate - let me try and explain. Our brain works hard to create and recreate our focus, be it positive or negative. So if we are constantly verbalising (or internalising) and focussed on the negative / or the bits that we got wrong - our brain will work hard at recreating that. Say we are trying to work on sitting correctly to the trot. If we are bouncing around, and getting a little unbalanced, and we start to say things like ‘I’m so hopeless ‘ ‘ I’m unbalanced’ ‘ i just cant get it’ - that has become our focus, and therefore our brain’s focus. Instead we should be thinking ‘I’m balanced’, ‘ I can feel the horses movement’ ‘ I can move in tune with the horse’ - and then our brain will start to seek this. Of course we get lessons or go to clinics to have people improve our riding and our relationship with our horse - but we learn faster when we are focussed on the stuff we are doing right - then we can look to improve on the things we may struggle slightly with. On a mental level - think about how you talk to yourself - I have heard people call themselves - fat, stupid, dumb, hopeless, an idiot, shit, and the list goes on - we would
Ask Tanja...
never think about talking to someone else like this - so why would you do it to yourself ? Think about some of the times in your life when you may have heard these words and how they made you feel ashamed, silly, unloved, hurt, pained - do you think these feelings are helping you ride your horse better ? I don’t think so. Next time you jump in the saddle, focus on the good stuff, and tell yourself how great you are - you may be surprised at how much better it makes your ride.
Have you got a question you’d like to ask Tanja about your horse? Send your question to tanjajkraus@gmail.com with ‘Ask Tanja’ in the subject line - and check future issues of The Stable for Tanja’s responses!

Project Hope member Bec is dedicated to rehabilitating PHHW horses in short term care, especially those with laminitis. She is studying this debilitating disease. All too many horses are euthanised when laminitis is not managed properly and they are in constant pain. Bec’s persistence and dedication shows it can be done. She writes:-
Laminitis – it’s not just about the hooves! Upon arrival, Eddie was stiff with pain. He was experiencing the effects of chronic laminitis. Prior to Project Hope intervening, he was about to become another statistic.
Eddie upon arrival - notice his stance. Not a typical laminitic stance (usually standing way back on their heels)
Eddie was removed from grass and given a yard and straw bedding, This provided soft footing and encouraged him to lie down and take the pressure off his feet. He also had boots with comfort pads to help ease the pain.
Inset: Eddie with his rehab boots.
Laminitis isn’t just about good hoof care, it’s about management and nutrition also. Eddie’s emergency diet consisted of soaked grass hay, soaked chaff, Maxisoy, linseed oil, a hoof supplement (biotin source), and a herbal mix – devils claw, white willow and clivers. He was fed twice daily and given a salt lick.

Now, three months on, he’s consuming a ‘normal’ diet (chaff, Maxisoy, Gold Pellets, grass hay with some occasional lucerne hay – nothing is soaked). He’s also back on pasture. He has a gravel laneway, grassy areas, and a sand yard – moving over all these surfaces benefits his feet and his health. He trots, canters, prances, and sometimes kicks and bucks when he sees his carer coming with breakfast and dinner. He truly is a character with a huge, honest and sweet personality.

Managing laminitic horses and ponies can also be a challenge. Despite being overweight, they still require access to hay or roughage 24/7. Locking a laminitic pony away with nothing to graze on, or feeding any horse sporadically can cause digestive issues such as colic and stomach ulcers, as well as causing the horse to develop stable vices through boredom if he is not able to graze. Serious problems can occur if horses or ponies are starved for periods longer than 3-4 hours. Heading into Spring, a lot of metabolic and laminitic type horses and ponies will need locking up off the grass which can be stressful for them, so a slow feeder gives them longer access to forage to help with their physical and mental health. The Diamond Grids are an easy solution and they saved us over $300 per trough compared to cementing the pads. If we ever need to move a trough, we can pull the grids up and move them to the ? next site. We plan on installing the grids in gateways and can see the potential for using them in cattle yards that are prone to mud. - Wayne Flintham, CSIRO, Lansdown Research Station

The Tail End brought to you by...
Agistment Types No.. not the many differences in agistment properties, we're speaking of the owner personality types at any given agistment farm, or possibly adult riding club. The people you come to know being a fellow agistee, their many and varied annoying traits, idiosyncracies, and questionable horse handling methods,, Ah! The fun of involving yourself in agistment politics.... The horse community is an odd world made up of all kinds of horse owners. It’s known that every agistment property is a second home to at least three of the following agistment ‘types’. The Neurotic Horse Owner Always frantically making calls to the vet, the Neurotic Horse Owner freaks out at the sight of blood. Lumps and bumps on the horse’s legs are surely fractures, and if Tommy has a temperature, it’s sure to be some little-heard-of exotic horse disease; of course, the first documented case in Australia. Admittedly, The Neurotic Horse Owner has had quite bad luck with horse health problems in the past, but is definitely over-paranoid about paddock accidents, and would literally wrap her horses in bubble wrap if she could! Notable Quote: “Tommy is lame/has a temperature/ hurt himself/is at the vet/is going to the vet/just came home from the vet/has colic/is on the verge of coming down with something/has a respiratory problem...” Miss Know It All The one on the property who will nit-pick everything you do - it’s not her business, but that doesn’t stop Miss Know It All’s ‘helpful’ advice. Usually, she doesn’t actually know the full story, but has no problem condemning you (or other agistees) for your apparent

lack of horse knowledge. Of course, she knows better. In fact, you shouldn’t listen to the advice of your qualified equine veterinarian. She knows better - just ask her! Notable Quote: “In my opinion...” Cowboy Chick The one who likes to drink Bundy with the boys, has fired a shotgun in her lifetime, and while being a ‘tough chick’ - is not always the popular agistee on the property. She may or may not still believe in the old tie down method of breaking horses, but she is not likely to bat an eyelid over the little things. Rarely stressed, Cowboy Chick firmly has the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude, and worries little what other people think of her. Notable Quote: “That’s nothing to worry about mate.” The Old Timer The horse owner who has ‘been there, jumped that’, The Old Timer’s opinions are often overlooked by the younger generation, but she treats her horses (who are all mid 30’s and healthy as a horse, so to speak!) with the upmost respect. The Old Timer doesn’t give advice unless she is asked, but always knows the solution to every problem. Notable Quote: “A pat and a kind word go a long way with horses.”
SPOTLIGHT The Learner The bumbling beginner, often with the naughty horse. The Learner could be fourteen or forty - but where the Learner and her horse are, the whirlwind of destruction and drama follow! Often receiving conflicting advice from Miss Know It All, Cowboy Chick and The Neurotic Horse Owner, The Learner often doesn’t know which way is up, or which advice to follow! Notable Quote: “Henry! Bad horse! Don’t do that!” Quiet Achiever The agistee who keeps to herself most of the time, takes her horses out on a few rides a week, competes at the odd show and always seems to do very well. She loves her horse and doesn’t own him for his fancy bloodlines or pedigree. The Quiet Achiever never brags, treats her horses with respect, and in turn, has a way with problem horses on the property too. Notable Quote: “First place? Yeah. But my horse did all the hard work. I’m really proud of him.” The Serious Showie The Serious Showie’s horses never have a tail hair out of place. They are most often stabled full time, wear three rugs in summer, are washed three times a week - and god forbid if there are manure stains in their socks! The Serious Showie has all the latest gear, and she herself is a bit of a clothes horse. Her horses are all purebred, from multi-champion stock, the dam of her youngest show horse winning the most prestigious class in her age group at the National Show. Notable Quote: ‘Oh? Your horses aren’t purebred? That’s a shame, they’ll never amount to anything.’ The Determined Eventer The Determined Eventer doesn’t have time for anything other than the four horses she has in work. Between juggling studies, a suffering social life, budget constraints and competitions on every weekend, The Determined Eventer still manages to bring home the blue ribbons. She keeps her gear in order, her horses look fantastic - but unlike the Serious Showie, the Determined Eventer has real horse sense and a passion for her animals. She’s gritty and motivated, not afraid to get her hands dirty. Notable Quote: “Sorry! No time. I have to get these horses ridden, groomed, fed and put away, and there’s only an hour of daylight left! I’ll be back at 5am though, if you want to catch up then?”

The Trail Rider That agistee who packs her saddle bags and is off for the day - out exploring the surrounding tracks and trails. Her sturdy mount has surely never seen the interior of a stable, and that’s just how they prefer life. The showies may scoff, but the Trail Rider and her horse usually have a wonderful, carefree relationship. The Trail Rider may be a little rough around the edges, but loves her horse - he’s her best mate. Notable Quote: [sound of hoofbeats off in the distance] The Natural Horsemanship Owner The one who never rides, who has what was once the ‘problem horse’, The Natural Horsemanship owner struggles to achieve anything without the assistance of her ‘carrot stick’ (a.k.a orange coloured dressage whip) and seems to lack a whole lot of natural horse sense, although is able to quote her Horsemanship idols, detailing their methods - although can’t seem to put them to good use for herself. Notable Quote: “According to (insert latest horsemanship hero here), I’m the herd leader.” Miss Meddlesome When social dramas are the highlight of your day, you’re probably a Miss Meddlesome type. She has to know all of the goings on around the property, and is always willing to share her gossip. The more sensational, the jucier! Pity that often, there is little or no truth to the gossip she spreads. Dishing out on the way other agistees neglect their horses is Miss Meddlesome’s bread and butter. Notable Quote: ‘Did you SEE the size of that wound on Frosty’s fetlock? I don’t know WHY she isn’t getting immediate veterinary attention!’ (In reality, probably a scratch that didn’t break the skin.) So.... which one are you? =)
