ARE YOU A HORSE HOARDER? Ever wondered a growing family of horses becomes hoarding? Is it the point that you become like the crazy cat lady from The Simpsons and have so many it’s hard to keep track of their names? Clara Ann Mason, a vet in Winfield, West Virginia and a frequent lecturer on animal welfare agrees that it’s time to redefine what it means to be an animal/horse hoarder. She would like to see law enforcement jurisdictions accept an absolute definition of animal hoarding. “We think of the old lady with 100 cats, but someone could have four horses and still be a hoarder,” Dr. Mason said. She said that generally hoarders don’t believe that their animals are under fed, or that they breed their animals indiscriminately. She believes that during tough economic times animal hoarding increases and is likely to involve objectifying the animals to serve the owners own delusions. She also said that hoarders tend to be narcissistic and seek to be seen as more affluent than they really are. “People say, ‘Look at me, I have all these horses,’ ” Mason said. Executive director of the Horse Protection Association of Florida Morgan Silver believes that hoarding has less to do with large numbers of animals and more to do with abuse. “A hoarder is defined as anyone who cannot emotionally, financially, or physically look after his or her animals, and this might mean two animals or 200,” Silver said. “But though we have an awareness of a hoarding situation, it is the condition of the animal that comes into play when we remove or seize an animal and when we charge the owner,” So don’t fret the fact that you have a horde of minis or a growing number of stable-mates. Just always be sure that you have the means to properly take care of them and give them all the love and attention that they rightly deserve!

KENTUCKY EQUINE RESEARCH - NUTRITION NEWS
NUTRITION &
THE EQUINE FOOT M
any performance and racehorses cannot perform to their potential because they have hoof problems that keep them out of work or reduce performance.
The old adage “No hoof – No horse” still applies today and this article examines some of the nutritional issues that impact on the health and development of the hoof of the horse.
ENERGY INTAKES EFFECTS HOOF GROWTH In evaluating a feeding program when faced with bad feet, the first thing to consider is total feed (energy) intake. Meeting energy requirements may be the first and most important step in ensuring hoof growth and integrity.
HOOF WALL IS MOSTLY PROTEIN. Research shows that hoof wall is about 93% protein. Because of the composition of the hoof wall, most of the commercially available hoof supplements contain methionine. The thing that people fail to realise is that methionine is but one of the amino acids (building blocks) contained in the protein of the hoof, and deficiencies of any essential amino acid can be as detrimental as a deficiency of methionine. We recommend 25% protein supplement pellets eg KER ALL PHASE for any horse with bad feet, especially if the horse is receiving a diet that supplies poor quality protein, such as the historical chaff and oats diet. The sulphur containing amino acid methionine is undoubtedly important in the correct growth of hooves however other amino acids in the diet must not be neglected.
10
ZINC IS IMPORTANT BUT SO ARE OTHER MINERALS
In considering minerals in the diet, current thinking in the relationship of diet and hoof integrity puts too much emphasis on zinc and far too little emphasis on the other minerals necessary for metabolism. Remember the health of the foot is an extension of the health of the horse and if mineral deficiencies compromise horse health in general, then the health of the foot is going to be negatively impacted as well. There is justification for looking specifically at zinc when trying to put together the “hoof healthy” diet. Zinc is involved in the health and integrity of hair, skin and hoof. But, adding additional zinc to a diet that is already adequate in zinc is not going to automatically result in any dramatic increases in the quality or growth of the hoof.
BIOTIN
Most of the emphasis on vitamins and hoof wall integrity centres on the vitamin biotin. It is thought that the normal horse has a biotin requirement of 1-2 mg per day. Horses with bad feet generally do not have a significantly different plasma biotin concentration than their good-footed contemporaries. Studies have shown that supplemental biotin at levels of 15-20 mg per day has had positive effects on histological characteristics of the hoof wall tissue. However you do have to be patient as the horse takes 6-9 months to grow a new hoof. Combination supplements that incorporate biotin, zinc and methionine eg KER BIO-BLOOM work better than straight biotin products. At higher dose rates these products can also be a wonderful coat conditioner and can
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
be used in the recovery from laminitis at dose rates equivalent to 45-50 mg biotin per day. Farriers sometimes report a difference in how the nail goes in to the hoof as little as a month after starting treatment.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Even though most bad feet are a result of genetics and bad mechanics there is a piece of the riddle that can be solved with good nutrition. Find a reputable feed manufacturer, identify the feed that is designed for the class of horse you are feeding, and feed enough of it to get the desired body condition. Look for feeds that are balanced for macro and micro minerals, especially Zinc and calcium which are critical for hoof growth and strength. If everything is being done from a nutritional and shoeing/trimming standpoint, and hoof quality is still poor, it is worth using a supplement that contains biotin, methionine and zinc. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix and maintaining a good foot on a horse is a combined result of good farriery, good nutrition, good health care and selecting for horses that genetically have a great foot. SNOWY MOUNTAIN HORSE RIDERS ANGRY OVER
CANNIBAL BRUMBY CLAIM Academics from ANU who wrote about three starving horses eating the innards of a dead horse have outraged Snowy Mountains horse riders. They claim the academics should have helped them, rather than expoited them for a sensationalist story. The claims were made by Dr Don Driscoll and Dr Sam Banks to underline their case for the resumption of aerial culling in the area. They claim that somewhere between 7000 and 11000 horses will die due to starvation, dehydration or poisoning over the next decade if culling doesn’t happen. Leisa Caldwell, the horse riders association spokesperson has said that the claims are irresponsible and also criticized the Kosciusko Nation Park managers for not allowing members to remove the horses. “You don’t need a university degree to know that horses are not carnivorous but were probably nibbling at their fallen mates’ caecum and intestines for the undigested herbaceous matter to survive,” Ms Caldwell said. “The sickening part of this story is that our horsemen requested on two occasions to go and remove those horses before winter set in but were not permitted to do so by park managers. These horses should have been saved and re-homed,” A spokeswoman for National Parks said staff attended horses at two locations in the southern part of the park: Cootapatamba Hut and Dead Horse Gap. At Cootapatamba Hut, a lone horse was euthanased on humane grounds after discussions with the RSPCA and Mr Cochran. “At Dead Horse Gap, about six kilometres south of Thredbo, there were five snowbound horses, three alive and two dead. NPWS staff monitored the three surviving horses, which were in very poor condition, and considered euthanasia on humane grounds, however mustered them to lighter snow cover and they are believed to have survived,” the spokeswoman said. Ms. Caldwell has said that a National Parks draft of the official count taken in May 2014 had said that numbers could be as low as 3800 brumbies for the whole Kosciusko National Park. “It is becoming clear that some ANU academics and their anti-horse lobby friends are getting quite desperate and are going to any lengths to see our brumbies exterminated,” Ms Caldwell said. National Parks Association of the ACT conservationist Dianne Thomson says feral horse numbers are totally out of control, and serious measures need to be undertaken to significantly reduce their numbers because of the damage they were doing to sensitive water catchments.

KIWI HORSE RACE CHAOS
Even if you are against jumps racing it’s hard not to be amused by a race where there are no injuries to horse or rider and yet eight of the 14 riders fail to finish. From the first jump the mayhem began and by the second there were riderless horses across the track still racing along with the competitors. There was a rider whose foot came out of the stirrup and went way off course trying to stay in the saddle. Another horse, ‘Just Gorgeous’ just decided that was enough and pulled out of the race. The rider-less horses came back to shake things up running across the front of the other riders in a moment befitting Benny Hill. In what was an extraordinary race no riders or horses were hurt but there was definitely chaos! Check it out at http://www.nzracing.co.nz/ RaceInfo/43304/5/Race-Detail.aspx (Click on the ‘video’ tab!)

Andrew Nicholson
Burghley Hor New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson has made history at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials with a third successive victory with his grey gelding Avebury. It’s an amazing feat considering how challenging the British CCI4* event is. As a bonus he also finished in fourth place in the FEI Classics, although William Fox-Pitt’s position atop the
20
leaderboard was never really in doubt. His fourth place finish with a clear jumping round sealed his victory for the fourth time since the series started in 2008. Australian Sam Griffiths and Happy Times hit two fences to drop back to third and Oliver Townend who was third overnight put down four rails to finish in eigth. Nicholson was left with a two-rail breathing space over
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
Jock Paget also of NZ who jumped an immaculate clear round to finish in second. Nicholson jumped clear with only two time faults to secure victory. “I can assure you that I didn’t feel that cool!” said Nicholson, who admitted to feeling the strain. “He’s a good jumper but I knew I’d got to keep calm and confident. It was tempting to speed up at the last two fences,

rse Trials 2014 Photos: Trevor Holt/FEI because I knew I was heading for time faults, but I decided to stay in a rhythm because I really wanted to win with a clear round.” “This isn’t just about me, it’s about the team at home – I’m just lucky enough to ride the horse. I’ve had a bad year – I shouldn’t have fallen off at Badminton and then I really wanted to win a medal in Normandy and didn’t – so I’ve put
myself under a lot of pressure. Winning this means an awful lot.” Sam Griffiths finished second overall in the FEI Classics with the 15-year-old Happy Times. Oliver Townend the 2009 winner slipped back to third place. Tim Price from New Zealand narrowly edged out Australia’s Chris Burton for fifth place behind Andrew Nicholson.
said Fox-Pitt. “It’s all down to my horses. Seacookie got it off to a great start at Pau last year and Bay My Hero was brilliant at Kentucky. But then I had a fall at Badminton and withdrew Cool Mountain at Luhmuehlen and it was all looking a bit patchy. The FEI Classics™ is a great addition to our sport.”
“It was fantastic to win again,”

Off The (Beaten) T
A two-month trek from Canberra to Healesville using four retired Thoroughbred racehorses, usin It’s hard to imagine anything further departed from the manicured turf of the racetrack than the stock routes of the High Country, but when four ex-racehorses depart Thoroughbred Park in Canberra on November 15 with owner Susan Campbell and the aim of showcasing the versatility of the off-the-track Thoroughbred, that’s exactly where they’ll be for the twomonth journey to Healesville. Off The Beaten Track is an initiative of Campbell’s business partner and veterinarian, Marcus Karlen, himself a retired racehorse retrainer, who wished to dispel the myths related to a breed often maligned outside of the racing industry as being hot and difficult to handle.
The pair encourage people to join Susan throughout the journey to learn more about their team, which includes a talented showjumper in Budding Scholar, who started his career in the stables of the 2013-14 Metropolitan Trainers’ Premiership winner, Darren Weir, and solid all-rounder, Yahalom, who raced with Robbie Griffiths, whose wife Shiranee is well-known for post-racing placement of horses. In addition to showcasing the diverse abilities of the ex-racehorse, the ride aims to raise funds for the non-profit, Piper’s Call Home of Rest, a facility where retired racehorses are a feature in equine-assisted development courses for young people and children living with disadvantage. The operation is also utilised by the local Kyneton Community & Learning Centre, who use their horses in the delivery of Equine Industry preaccreditation. The team is asking for the support of the racing fraternity and wider equestrian
community in making this ride and anyone able to offer accom or drive as pit-crew along the C Healesville route is encourage Susan with details. Additionall sponsorship of feed, fuel, sadd a ladies medium Driza-bone co welcome to ensure the ride m awareness and fundraising aim

T
he Exhibition Eventing now in it’s fourth year at the Royal Melbourne Show is
definitely a drawcard for the horse loving spectators as well as being a wonderful introduction into the sport for the general public. Consisting of two rounds - a dressage test followed by a jumping phase comprised of both cross country fences and showjumps, it’s an exciting spin on the traditional sport of eventing. The event at the Royal Melbourne Show is a qualifier for the final in the Equestrian Grand Final Exhibition Eventing, to be held at this years’ Equitana. The top four riders qualify for a place in the final, along with the top of the field from the Wallaby Hill Equestrian Extravaganza, held earlier this year. The scoring system is slightly different to what traditionalists may be used to - after the dressage phase, riders are simply ranked from first place (carrying no penalty points into the jumping round) second, carrying in two penalties and so on. The jumping round commences and any faults incurred are added to the rider’s score, and the rider with the least number of penalty points is declared the winner. Adding the the excitement is the optional ‘joker’ fence, which, if cleared, removes four penalties - although if attempted and knocked down, incurs eight penalty points. This year’s winner was Katja Weimann and BP Cosmopolitan, who finished on a score of -2. In second place, Simon Tainsh and the pretty bay mare Just De Mazana, third place was claimed by Tesse Cook and Rimfire Don Pierre, and fourth place (and the final combination to qualify for the series final) went to Yona Lloyd and Sargent Crisp.

A
n unexpected gem at this years’ Royal Melbourne Show was the daily entertainment. Between classes in
previous years, we’ve been thrilled by Samson the Monster Truck, a daredevil walking a tightrope at some ridiculous height above the crowd, and motorcycles jumping over trucks with the obligatory fireworks displays to end the days. This year we were pleasantly surprised that the lunch time break was filled with something we’re a little bit familiar with... HORSES! Enter The Rooftop Express, and Dave Manchon, with his stunning Quarter Horse stallion, Bluey, Rocy the trick-trained stock horse, loyal working dogs, wranglers, cattle and Jacko, Rooftop’s resident comic relief! A show that’s not just for the kiddies (although they’ll love it!) The Rooftop Express Show is creative, entertaining and surprising. We didn’t expect to see horses and cattle self load - not into a gooseneck - but on top of it - but we did! It’s obvious that there’s some solid horsemanship behind the show, and with a good measure of Aussie bush humour, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the Rooftop Express Show.

GARRYOWEN WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH
2
014 marked the 80th anniversary of The Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout, one of this country’s most prestigious and glamorous turnout events.
In memory of Champion Hack ‘Garryowen’ whose owner Mrs. Violet Murrell, one of Victoria’s foremost show and cross country horsewomen, died aged twenty-nine trying to save him and Piquant from a tragic stable fire in 1934 in Montone. Horse and rider combinations are judged in six categories; conformation and soundness, manners and paces, riding ability, general appearance, costume and saddlery. The event is always hotly contested, with riders going all out for their chance to be named the winner. This year, the honour went to Shae Hanger of Pearcedale, who rode ex-racehorse ‘Chosen One’, who was aquired upon his retirement from racing and who has been with the Hanger family for just over 12 months. “It is a great honour to win the Garryowen in its 80th year, especially because the event is so close to my family’s heart.” It’s the second win for Shae who also won the title in 2008 with ‘Warwind’. Second place in the 2014 Garryowen was awarded to another ex-racehorse in SLM Orlando, ridden by Stephanie Barrington another previous winner of the trophy. A lovely touch was the display of Garryowen history not too far from the Coca Cola arena, including photos of previous winners, media coverage from decades gone by, and photos of Violet Murrell with her beloved Garryowen. W
ith the Australian Showjumping Championships barely behind us, it was time to turn our attention to the showjumping classes at this years’ Royal Melbourne Show. A great turnout and star-studded draw had us excited to watch the jumping over three days of the show program - but we were looking forward to none more than the FEI World Cup Jumping Qualifying Event.
First up though was the Mini Prix - a great warm up for us and a chance to see some of Australia’s greatest horses and riders in action! 25 horses and riders lined up to take a crack at the Mini Prix course, which resulted in not one jump off, but two! Entering into the second round were riders on four faults or less - in this case, Matthew Afford & Kaluna Salute, Billy Raymont & Chironic Dominant Visage, Caroline Price & Cervelt MVNZ, Brooke Campbell & Copabella Cadiz, Stuart Jenkins & Fairview Animation, and Tom McDermott on Statford Delight as well as on his second horse in the class, Fernhill Quintago. The going was tough, and the riding highly competitive - so much so that on points alone, a third round ensued to decide the winning places between Tom & Statford Delight, Brooke and Cadiz, Caroline and Cervelt and Stuart & Animation. Unfortunately, Stuart had a refusal in his round and time decided first second and third place. Check out the photos and the winners on the following pages....

Jeroen Dubbeldam has made it double gold at the FEI World Equestrian Games adding individual glory to the Netherlands team victory. He made his way into the top four thanks to a horse he admitted was inexperienced at this level, 10-year-old Zenith. “I made a big mistake in the second round at Jerez (ESP) in 2002 with De Sjiem, and I’ve never forgiven myself for that - until now!” Dubbeldam said. Frenchman Patrice Delaveau chased Dubbledam right down to the wire and finished only a fault behind to win the silver medal. America’s Beezie Madden claimed the bronze medal.

Australia’s Boyd Exell has been crowned world champion for the third consecutive time. In the exciting final obstacle driving competition of the games Exell scored a clear round winning gold ahead of Chester Weber of the USA and Theo Timmerman of the Netherlands. Exell entered the arena knowing that only a clear round would let him defend his title and showed his skills and held his nerve to do exactly that. “It was a huge relief,” he commented. “We had a good show throughout the weekend, but not a perfect show. The cones went really well for me although the arena was moving a lot. I knew Chester would have a clear round because he has been driving clear rounds all season. He has the best cones team and I expected this already. It is great to be the world champion again and I would like to thank my entire team for their great support.”

VAULTING
Jacques Ferrari - © CO Normandie 2014/PSV This year’s FEI World Equestrian Games Vaulting saw vaulters from Great Britain, Austria and Germany finish on the podium. The excitement was so high that spectators had to be asked to restrain themselves after cheering so loud. When it came to the ceremonies though it was another story especially when Jaques Ferrari secured the first French gold medal of the games in the Male Individual title. In Pas de Deux Austria’s Jasmin Linder and Lukas Wacher posted a massive score of 9.039 to leave them 0.454 ahead of German duo Pia Engelberty and Torben Jacobs. British sisters Joanne and Hannah Eccles rounded out the medals winning bronze. “You’re in the middle of the arena and the people all around you clap their hands and shout because they are enjoying your freestyle, and that’s an amazing feeling!” said Linder.
58
In the Female Individual Joanne Eccles blew the other competitors out of the water to win her second successive games title. Her score of 9.119 was in another league to her closest rival, Italy’s Anna Cavallaro who posted an overall total of 8.452. Simone Jaiser of Switzerland took out bronze. Eccles signature one-handed cartwheel and handstand once again demonstrated her physical strength that lies beneath her elegant performances. “It’s been an incredible week” “To come back here after the last WEG with the same team and horse is amazing, and to win another gold makes it even more special.” The Male Individual was won by Frenchman Jaques Ferrari ahead of fellow countryman Nicolas Andreani. The bronze was awarded to Germany’s Erik Oese who only narrowly missed out on the silver by 0.015 and looks to have a bright future.
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
“I am absolutely delighted with my result, every medal is a medal,” Oese said. “This is my first WEG, and I found it harder than the two other championships I have attended but it has been fun” he added. “This is the crowning moment of a long process of many years, not just for myself but my family, friends and my team-mates, and the culmination of the development of a style I have tried to design” Ferrari said. It seems his future is unsure however. “This is a sign that I have reached the limit and the pinnacle of my career, so I don’t know what will follow” said the vaulter who now holds both the individual European and world titles. The French crowd had more to cheer about when the host nation also took out the bronze medal in the squad final, which was won by Germany with the Swiss winning silver.

Last month’s issue of The Stable was out before the World Equestrian Games was over so we had to leave you without the final results from the eventing with only jumping not completed. Germany gave an absolute masterclass in Jumping to give Germany the full set of titles: Olympic, European and now World team gold medals with Sandra Auffarth also winning individual gold after sitting in second following Cross Country. All four German riders – Sandra Auffarth, Michael Jung, Ingrid Klimke and Dirk Schrade all had flawless rounds. “It’s unbelievable that we are double world champions,” said the modest Auffarth. “When I first rode Opgun Louvo I didn’t think he was a future champion, but we have taken every level step by step and he’s been fantastic this weekend, really working hard.”

Defending champion Michael Jung who won silver was quick to compliment his teammate. “Sandra is a true world champion,” he said. “She went across country last of all in the worst ground but she and her horse know each other so well.” “For me, it would have been great to come to a world championships on the same horse (La Biosthetique Sam) four years later, but I’m happy with silver because my mare did such a fantastic job. She’s a very clever horse.” The British team were never in doubt for the silver medal with Zara Phillips scoring a clear round but William FoxPitt was pushed right to the limit by the Germans after being in the box seat following Cross County. His charming stallion Chilli Morning was impeccably behaved, considering the deafening cheers for Auffarth that would have blown the roof off had the stadium had one, but he just caught the second fence with his front

legs and, to muffled groans, that was the gold medal gone. “Of course I’m frustrated, but I’m probably lucky not to have had two fences down,” Fox-Pitt said philosophically. “I’ve never ridden a stallion at any decent level before. He’s a real worker and trier, and he’s a rare commodity. I’m very proud of him and it’s great for his future as a sire.” The Australian team were looking good for the team bronze, holding third position after Cross Country but a very unfortunate 24-fault round from Shane Rose and Taurus left the door wide open and the Dutch team took full advantage. The top six nations – medallists Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands, plus France, Australia and Ireland – have all secured qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic games.

EDUCATION
The Education Program is a key feature of each EQUITANA and one of the main reasons visitors travel from all over Australia and overseas to come to the event. The program offers the unique opportunity to meet and learn from a diverse range of highly respected Australian and International equine experts, all in one location. EQUITANA provides displays, seminars, interactive question and answer platforms and training demonstrations that cover a range of subjects including: English and Western sports, equine health and care, natural therapies and horsemanship. All presented in purpose built demonstration arenas and a specialised classroom to ensure that visitors get the most from their education experience. Download the education & competition timetables at http://www.equitana.com.au/education
THE WAY OF THE HORSE Proudly supported by Horse and Country TV
The Way Of The Horse (TWOTH) – Australian Horsemanship Challenge is a three-day, young horse “starting” contest that is unique in this country. During the challenge, three of Australia’s leading horse trainers demonstrate their highly personal and specialised methods of connecting with an unbroken horse. TWOTH was initiated in 2005 by EQUITANA Australia, as a way to showcase a kinder and more caring way to start a young horse, so that it becomes a willing and happy riding partner. The trainers chosen for challenge have the same ethos. This years finalists are Bianca Gillanders, Bruce O’Dell and Kane Lamperd. Don’t miss this incredible event held over all 4 days at EQUITANA Melbourne this year.

ENTERTAINMENT At no other event can an audience be entertained and educated when some of the best horsemen and women in the world all come together in one arena.
Dan Steers and Dan James of Double Dans Horsemanship continue to entertain crowds around the world with their electrifying liberty horse demonstrations, displaying the ultimate partnership between horses and handlers. The two Dans have committed themselves to inviting riders of any skill level to push the boundaries of horsemanship and build extraordinary relationships with their horses. They will commence their program by sharing their proven training tips & techniques about Liberty training after which they will be joined by a group of special guests including Charlotte Dujardin (Dual Olympic Gold Medal Dressage Champion), Dirk Schrade (German Olympic Eventing Medallist), Lynn Palm (US Clinician and Western Dressage competitor) and Warwick Schiller (International Reining Competitor & Trainer). Can you imagine any more knowledge in one arena at any time? To top it off there is nothing like a bit of horse swapping and copying each other’s manoeuvres to turn a select group of seasoned professionals into gungho teenagers again. Whilst each discipline normally stands alone, utilizing different breeds, different tack, and different training methods with ultimately, a different resulting horse; our guests will demonstrate how these riders and disciplines can interact with, and often mirror each other exemplifying versatility. After they swap horses each guest rider will individually ride a freestyle performance in their new discipline. The final segment of this special program will see a “Roman Riding Ride Off” between Brett Parbery and Clayton Fredericks. Due to the huge success after having a first go at EQUITANA Sydney 2013, these two are getting serious about claiming the Roman Riding Champion title so don’t miss out on witnessing this fierce, nail biting competition! This afternoon entertainment program for all ages will be the ultimate Finale to EQUITANA Melbourne 2014!

News from TUFFROCK America LD Hornung has an amazing testimony about how effective the TuffRock Poultice is on a major injury that had the potential for ruining and even ending the life of her horse. We are so glad TuffRock was there to help when needed. In her words, “The mare was running and another horse lunged out and bit her and they both fell. This was the aftermath. 4 months of blanketing and packing it with poultice and this is what it looks like.”

SPECIALEVENT! EVENT EQUINENEWS REPORT
STORY AND PHOTOS: Claire Laycock The eighth annual Festival of Dressage was recently held at Queensland’s State Equestrian Centre, and what a showcase it turned out to be. Again! Every year has been a significant step up, in terms of size, quality, and charisma. Born of the passion and team-spirit of the Queensland State Dressage Squad, the buzz experienced at this event is like no other. The program featured industry experts from a variety of fields. Headlining the day were Anna Merveldt (International Grand Prix Dressage trainer), Dr Andrew McLean (International Equitation Science expert), and Stuart Tinney (Elite Australian Eventer). In addition, Show Horse champion Paul Austin, Olympic Dressage judge Mary Seefried, equine legal expert Penny Newbold, National Selector and Coach specialist Jacqui van Montfrans, Harold the Horse, the Queensland State Dressage Squad members (both riding and presenting), a large number of very fancy horses, and so much more, made for a truly brilliant day.
e p e h t y b l a v A festi The main arena opened with A Tribute to the Year of the Horse. An Australian Stock Horse stallion bearing the Australian flag led the way. He was followed by pairs of horses of differing breeds, then all stood still as a heart-warming poetry tribute was read. Arabians, Palominos, Friesians, Riding Ponies, Clydesdales, and Side-saddle riders proceeded to perform routines in their pairs. The day was underway in fine style.
Volunteer Co-Ordinator Alyssa Webb, with Event Director Nicole Tough. 78
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
The first educational demonstration in the arena was local Grand Prix rider Jenny Gehrke, who presented “Where to start your Dressage training”. As she so aptly stated: “The Basics: Dressage both begins and ends with what I’m talking about today”. With local National Youth Development Squad members Eloise Devlin and Annie Simmons riding, the
e l p o e p e h t r o f , e eopl crowd was taken through a stepby- step guide to correct Dressage foundations. In summary: Having attended the Festival of Dressage (first tick!), find a coach, and a sound horse with three clear and correct paces. From some sort of capacity to ride, diligently work at developing an excellent position. “Horses are extremely sensitive, we need to sit in a way that works with their bio-mechanics. If you’re not balanced, you’re giving them a message, and getting in their way”. From there, continually refine go, stop, and turn responses, including a good half-halt. Help your horse accept a regular contact- but no pulling! Finally, ride accurate figures. Yes, it makes the judges happy, but
by riding in a rhythm on your line the quality of the paces are best developed. Above all, remember why we’re in this sport; for the love of the horse. Yes, there will be trials and tribulations, but “make sure you keep your relationship positive and fun!” Next in to the arena were Grand Prix stars APH True Seville and Leesa Murray. They rode through their Freestyle to Music to great acclaim. Leesa generously donated the prize of a lesson on Seville for the owner of one lucky raffle ticket, what an opportunity. Over in the Seminar Centre, Olympian Stuart Tinney began his presentation: “Competing for Australia, my journey”. Starting at
his Pony Club days in Gladstone, he took the crowd through his transition from beginner, through to his presence on the National and International Eventing Scene. He spoke with fondness of many influential horses, including: Radical (a very quiet and beautiful type of ex-racehorse he came across by luck, who took him from Pony Club to winning State and National- level Eventing competitions), Jeepster (his Sydney Olympic Gold-medallist, previously trick-trained by Heath Harris to perform the Spanish walk), and Pluto Mio (just recently the highest placed Australian combination- 12th- at the World Equestrian Games, who has a major aversion to clapping!).

SPECIALEVENT! EVENT EQUINENEWS REPORT
A festival by the people, for the people
Stuart Tinney, one of eventing’s greats.
Back in to the main arena, and visiting superstar Anna Merveldt presented her first of three seminars: this one was “Establishing the basics”. Having previously attended her clinics in Brisbane just prior to the Festival, I was personally very excited to watch her work. No fancy tricks, no radical new concepts, just an exceptional choice of exercises, feel, timing, kindness, and total commitment to correct basics. For example, performing trot/ walk/ trot transitions. It’s not rocket science, we’ve all heard of the exercise, it’s just really really important! And really important to do well, with light effective aides, in a way which enhances the gymnastic development of the horse.
He shared about his early days spent at the Roycroft’s, and his ability to “ride the horses no-one else wanted to” is surely one of the traits that has taken him so far. Down-toearth, hard working, and incredibly talented, there’s every chance we’ll see him at Rio in a couple of years time. Directly following Stuart, was Dr Andrew McLean’s first talk: “Training for Optimum Performance”. He easily shared his passion for “demystifying the Science behind how our equine partners learn”, indeed he is one of the very leaders in the Equitation Science field internationally. He ably guided attendees through Attachment Theory, Operant and Classical Conditioning, Shaping, and BioMechanics, using many real-world examples to illustrate points. The author of seven books, he truly possesses an incredible depth of knowledge, and a real drive to make a difference in the lives of our horses.
80
One thing that she did suggest specifically for the young horses in the rising trot/walk transition, was to stay in rising trot right up until the walk. That is, don’t sit trot at all. Magically, the horses stopped hollowing out during the transition. Again, really simple things, done very well. The horses clearly looked better for it; more through, in a better balance, and in a correct soft contact. Basic things, uncommonly being done very well indeed. Barely time to catch your breath, and in comes the IHB Stallion Parade. It featured many of Queensland’s best riders, on both locally-bred and imported horses. Following the IHB Stallion Parade, was the Fashion Parade! I still recall the first one, many moons ago back at Pine Lodge. The State Squad riders, along with roped-in friends, giggled as they strutted their clothing up and down the catwalk. Well it has changed (it’s certainly bigger and better), but is still fantastic value for a laugh. Most of the models are still riders, and seem to go one of two ways; get right in to the groove, or shut down and turn a nice shade of pink. And then there’s the toga- related wardrobe malfunctions (no names)... A great idea, and great opportunity for Trade Stand owners to show off their wares in front of an adoring crowd.
Local legends Gary Lung and GB Windchester in the stallion parade. Recently back from almost 18 months with Steffen Peters, seeing Chester in the flesh again was a real crowd favourite. Although now a gelding, a limited number of frozen semen straws are available.

Another exercise was to pretend that the rider had no legs, and the horse had to respond to rhythmic whip-tapping instead. All go transitions are made with just the whip, legs loose and relaxing down. According to Dr McLean’s research, it takes around 15 seconds for a horse to change from a fear response to investigative behaviour.
Plenty of juicy offerings available...! Back in to the Horseland Main Arena, and Stuart Tinney gave his practical demonstration “Using jumps to improve gymnastic ability”. Again, simple things done well. Exercises included: riding through three poles set up as a fan, riding over two poles roughly seven strides apart on a straight line, four poles placed at each quarter of a 20m circle, and a small cross-rail grid. Except for the grid, all were performed first in walk, then trot, and finally canter. The grid was only done with a trot approach. It was clear how the horse began to think for itself to a much greater degree, and improve in self-carriage. Such exercises are standard for many Jump riders, the Dressage world is perhaps slowly slowly catching on too. A short presentation by the IC Firth Queensland Young Rider’s Squad led in to Dr Andrew McLean’s practical demonstration: “Dealing with resistance”. Three horses took part, one with a “stop” problem, one with a “turn” problem, and one with “go” issues.
82
“STOP” ISSUES:
He gave a great example of working with a horse in a previous seminar in Europe, who was terrified of ditches. This horse would not go near a ditch. In his seminar, Dr McLean simply gave the horse a chance to stand at the ditch on offer for a short while without
On a tense or flighty horse, practice walk/ halt/ walk transitions. “The aim is three repetitions of a good response in a row”. “TURN” ISSUES: In this case, shying. To help heal a shying response, ensure that your basic turn response is 100% in lowpressure situations beforehand. “When a horse shies, it’s simply a turn that you didn’t ask for... do horses really shy at things, or is it that the rider has no control?”. Another gem was “It’s not training if you’re holding him there, it’s wrestling”. “GO” ISSUES: With a more sluggish horse, any time the rider tried to help the horse maintain a pace, they need to make an upward transition. So, instead of trying to activate the walk, ask the horse to trot.
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
Dr. Andrew McLean meets Harol to be suffering from
A festival by the people, for the people pressure. Fairly soon afterward, the horse dropped his head, sniffed the ditch, and stepped over it no worries. The rider was apparently flabbergasted. Horses all over the world are surely much better off for Dr McLean’s clear and thoughtful training methods.
Next in to the arena are Emma Flavelle and Andiamo, presenting their Grand Prix Kur. The announcer briefly references the tragic events that led to Emma receiving the ride (http://www. emmaflavelle.com/the-horses/ andiamo), which adds visceral emotion to the performance. Emma’s kind and correct training are really getting the best out of this sweet horse.
ld the Horse. Poor Harold seems m ‘sitting problems’.
Local Grand Prix rider Jayden Brown and JAG Classique receiving assistance from the ground. Following the Kur is the second of Anna Merveldt’s Masterclasses. This one focuses on “Developing Collection and Expression”. Riding for her are Jayden Brown with JAG Classique, and Elke Gutsche with Jaybee Jazmine. The horses are around Medium level. “Let the exercises develop the collection” Anna suggests. Also, “the introduction of the double bridle is always a delicate thing, but a wonderful tool if used correctly”. The riders perform basic suppling work to warm up; 20m circles, serpentines, 5m loops off the longside, etc. “Shoulder-in is the most important exercise for collection, it helps the inside hind leg to step under and forward”. If the horse is showing tension, perform walk/ trot/ walk transitions in Shoulder-in. Then, once the horse is accepting the half-halt in the Shoulder-in, proceed to Travers. The Shoulder-in then goes on to set up the Half-pass. In working with flying changes, the counter canter and the simple changes (canter/ walk/ canter on new lead) must be well established. “Collect the horse, then take the collected horse forward”. “Head and neck up, nose forward” was also a regular refrain. To finish, she worked with Jayden from the ground, helping to develop expression and collection in the trot. Classique began to show some fine baby-passage steps. In finishing, possibly one of the most important quotes of the day, “remember to make haste slowly”. That’s worthy of being engraved in sandstone, for sure.

Outside again, there was much to see. One of the features was an opportunity to “meet the stars”, either human or equine. Here are some young fans with the glorious FEI mare Glogau, and then later in her Freestyle. Freestyle: Tori Welch and Glogau
Heading in to the evening, a fun highlight was Paul Austin’s show team. Thirteen riders and horses entered the arena, dressed to the nines. The point being made here was that the Showing world and Dressage do have plenty in common, indeed many of their successful show horses were indeed warmbloods. Each rider did a short individual workout, with commentary on each individual’s journey and successes.

Just about done for the day, Anna Merveldt’s third and final Masterclass: “Training at FEI”. For this, she has two of Queensland’s elite combinations: Tor Van den Berg with Lauries As, and Nicole Tough with Furst Tyme. These beautiful horses and beautiful riders make it look so easy, from warm-up, to playing with lengthening and collection, to practicing the collected exercises.
A festival by the people, for the people “A horse is like a piece of cheese, wider behind, going to a point in front suggests Anna, which leads to a reminder about Shoulderfore. The riders practice a canter square, performing a quarterpirouette on every second corner. The VIP area is becoming rowdier (the end of a great day!), as Anna subtly begins in-hand work towards passage and piaffe. Again, no mind-blowing tricks, just
simple exercises with exceptional feel and timing. The bar has been raised again, oh how to keep it there! The final raffle was drawn, six of the State Squad riders performed a Freestyle to Music. Good old Harold got a grand finale, speeches were given, many thanks were shared. Thanks to the sponsors, to the spectators, and I believe most of all to
the Queensland State Squad. This team is a true inspiration, and shows how it is possible to continually surpass yourselves when working together as a team, sharing what you love.
The Queensland Festival of Dressage is fast becoming a real feature on the calendar. It will be on again in September 2015, I look forward to seeing you there.

MANAGING PADDOCKS IS A TRICKY BUSINESS. NOT ONLY ARE CERTAIN FACTORS UNPREDICTABLE, BUT THERE ARE ALSO MANY DIFFERENT FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE HEALTH OF YOUR PASTURES. THE HEALTH OF YOUR HORSE LITERALLY STARTS FROM THE GROUND UP - WITH THE HEALTH OF HIS PADDOCK.

Good pasture management means ensuring your pasture is the best quality possible. How you manage your pastures - be it a two acre paddock, or hundred hectare property - will depend on the climate of the area, your soil type, the use of the land, land slope, the number of horses, and a million other influencing factors that you might have to consider. General management practices however, can be generally applied to any pasture. Just some of the factors that should be looked into when managing pastures include the soil quality, type of pasture, management of weeds, stock levels, grazing management, seasonal issues, manure management, and maintenance of structures on the property, such as shelters, fences and troughs, just to
name a few! By following a few simply guidelines and having good management practices in place, you can save both time and money - and have horses who thrive on healthy pastures. The health of your horse really does start from the ground up and in general, the better health your pastures are in, the less you will have to spend on feed and supplements for your horse. Working to improve pastures takes time and is a process that is on-going. Certain improvements need to be done according to climate, seasonal changes and rainfall, and it can take some time before the pasture is ideal. On top of this, weather and the elements make the job even more difficult. This is why it is important
that all other aspects that you can control are addressed - and you can make the most out of your paddocks, and keep them in good condition year round, simply by being aware of existing problems, and implementing a program to manage them. Researching your local area is a great place to start, and information is now available simply by searching on the internet. You can even look up details on your local area, including weather and rainfall information, which can assist you in making choices as to the type of pasture you have, and when to control weeds. If you need further advice, including guidelines of weed control in your local area, ask your council - they will generally be able to provide you with all of the information you’ll need.

PASTURE
MANAGEMENT SOIL TYPE & QUALITY The health of your pasture begins with the condition of your soil. If your soil does not contain enough nutrients to allow good growth of the pasture, then your horse definitely won’t be reaping the benefit from the grazing that is available. Soil needs to contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulphur - and it needs to be at a good pH level. Soil also needs to contain specific trace elements in order to achieve maximum pasture growth. It is recommended that a soil test be done on your paddocks at least once every four or five years. Over time, grazing removes the nutrients from the soil, and the running of certain animals, along with the choice of pasture type can alter the pH of the soil. A soil test can not only advise you as to the pH level of your soil, but it can also give you readings of the levels of minerals in the soil. Based on the readings, you can then fertilise your soil accordingly. There is no point just adding fertiliser, or fertilising your soil every year unless you know what your soil is lacking in, and are specifically trying to adjust the balance of nutrients in your soil. Growing legumes, such as lucerne or clover actually raises the levels of nitrogen in soil, so when it comes time to fertilise, you may find that you only need to boost levels of phosphorus, for example. Growing legumes can also make soil more acidic over time, so the pH of your soil may need to be neutralised with lime. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, while anything below 7 is acidic. Readings of above 7 indicate an alkaline soil. Soil tests can be arranged through various companies, and are worthwhile. Testing soil before you fertilise can save you time and money, and can help you to avoid pastures that are too acidic for good pasture growth.

PASTURE TYPES
You may already have an established pasture that requires a boost - or you might be renovating and need to re-sow. In any case, choosing the right pasture mix has a huge impact on the health of your paddocks. There are different kinds of pasture mixes available, and a range of different grasses you can sow on your paddocks. Making the right pasture choice could be the difference between year round grazing, and having to buy in large quantities of hay and feed, so choosing a pasture mix that is appropriate for your paddocks is essential. Again, your choice of grass will be dependent on many factors, including climate, rainfall, soil type, and the kinds of animals you will be running. Some grasses are annuals, and will grow well year round. Other types of grasses will fair better in certain times of year. Some grasses thrive in clay soils, others require well draining soils in order to achieve optimum growth. You need to choose a grass (or combination of grasses) that will grow well in your area, and provide grazing year round. Before you ask for a bag of ‘Pasture mix’ - ask what is in it, research the different kinds of grasses, and make an informed choice.

MANAGEMENT SEASONAL MANAGEMENT As the seasons change, so too will your pasture. How effectively you manage your paddocks will have a direct impact on how they fare throughout each season. Ideally, you have sown a pasture mix that allows growth of one species of grass or another all year round. You have ensured that your soil is at it’s optimum pH, and contains all nutrients vital to pasture growth. The next step is to look at how your paddocks fare under extreme conditions, and to see if improvement is necessary in management of livestock, so you can maintain healthy and flourishing pastures. Extreme heat and drought conditions can have a severe effect on paddocks, particularly if there is little or no ground coverage of grasses. Exposed soil can increase the chances of erosion, and little rainfall can mean that it is quite difficult to reestablish healthy pasture in areas that no longer have good ground coverage. Do not over graze areas in summer, and opt for hardier grasses that are more drought tolerant if necessary. There are many problems associated with wet weather. Rain is necessary for optimum growth, but too much rain, or too many horses can lead to ruined pastures. High traffic areas are also likely to turn to one large swampy mess, and so management alternatives must be arranged to avoid these problems. Decreasing the volume of horses on the property can stop paddocks from becoming mud pits, although realistically, no paddock will ever be mud free, and often mud surrounding troughs, shelters, and gateways cannot be avoided. If possible, make traffic alternatives to avoid one area from bearing all of the traffic. If this is not possible and the area is flooded longterm, accept that this area will not be useful grazing land. Once an area has been waterlogged, often the soil is no longer aerated sufficiently, and it can be difficult to level out the area after a long winter. Generally, waterlogging occurs when paddocks are too small, or on low lying ground where flooding regularly occurs. In some cases, it might be easier and a better solution to avoid using these paddocks after heavy rainfall and when waterlogging occurs.
90 74
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS SUFFER THE MOST IN WET WEATHER. DECREASING THE NUMBER OF HORSES IN THESE AREAS CAN HELP TO PREVENT PASTURES FROM BEING RUINED AFTER HEAVY RAINFALL.
OVERGRAZING & OVERSTOCKING Keeping too many horses on one property or in one area is known as ‘overstocking’. Overstocking dramatically impairs the growth of healthy pasture. Horses not only graze down paddocks very low to the ground, but they also cause damage to soil with their hooves. The higher the number of horses in one paddock, the higher the level of damage will be. Overgrazing is when horses are left in one paddock for an extended period of time, until the paddock is depleted. The end result is generally the same as overstocking, leaving the paddock in a state of disrepair. In both cases, re-establishing pasture can be very difficult, and depending on the condition of the paddock, it may have to be re-sown, rested, and/or fertilised. The generally accepted ‘standard’ stocking rate is one horse per acre. If your property is in need of pasture improvement, and you only have a small amount of grazing, the stocking rate could be even less - one horse per two acres.

MANAGEMENT GRAZING MANAGEMENT There are different ways to actually manage the grazing of a property - or even the grazing of a paddock. You can implement grazing techniques even if you agist your horse in a paddock that you are able to manage yourself. The two main types or methods of grazing are rotational grazing and strip grazing. ROTATIONAL GRAZING involves moving horses from one paddock into a fresh paddock once the grazing has been eaten down, allowing the old paddock to rest and regrow, while the horses eat down the new paddock. Rotational grazing is a very popular method where there is enough free room to rest a large area for a lengthy period. Typically, paddocks are rested for at least six months at a time, and which also ties in with the worm and parasite control program of a property. STRIP GRAZING is where a part of a paddock is sectioned off using temporary fencing, while the horse has access to a small part of the paddock at a time. Once one ‘strip’ is grazed, the horse is moved on to the next, and so on.
WEEDS DON’T JUST GROW ON THE GROUND WITHIN A PADDOCK! ALWAYS CHECK FENCE BOUNDARIES AND OVERHANGING TREES TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE NOT POISONOUS OR TOXIC TO YOUR HORSE.
IDEALLY, PASTURES SHOULD NEVER BE GRAZED DOWN TO GROUND LEVEL. IN WARMER MONTHS, A MINIMUM OF 5CMS OF GROWTH SHOULD BE LEFT WHEN A PADDOCK IS DUE TO BE RESTED. BARE PATCHES IN GROUND COVER ALLOWS WEEDS TO TAKE OVER FROM SOWN PASTURE.

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
Generally one or both of these methods are employed to allow horses access to fresh pasture as often as possible, although on very large properties this type of management may not be necessary provided parasites and worms can be effectively controlled.

MANAGEMENT CROSS GRAZING Cross grazing serves many purposes. Grazing sheep, goats and cattle on your property after horses have been removed from a paddock in a rotational grazing system can be extremely beneficial, provided you have the room for your cross grazers. Sheep and goats are less selective than horses, and will eat weeds that horses will not. This keeps the weeds from overtaking the grass after it has been grazed down. Cross grazing with different animals also helps to control worms and parasites around the paddocks, as worms are generally linked to one species of animal. Introducing new animal species into a paddock following the horses will often break worm life cycles.
SHEEP MAKE EXCELLENT CROSS GRAZING ANIMALS. THEY ARE LESS SELECTIVE THAN HORSES IN THEIR CHOICE OF GRAZING AND THEY HAVE A HIGH RESISTANCE TO WEEDS THAT HORSES FIND TOXIC.
MANURE MANAGEMENT Every horse property needs to have an effective manure management program for many reasons, including hygiene, cleanliness, pasture health and worm control. Manure can be removed from paddocks, or can be harrowed and spread, depending on the size of the property.Although popular with gardeners, manure is not popular around the stable! Good management practices dictate that manure should be picked up around stables, yards and small areas daily. Ideally, a paddock should have the manure removed from it once a week - but this all depends on the size of the area you are managing.
If the area you are managing is small, pick up the manure as often as possible. If this is not an option, you can either harrow or spread the manure around. Spreading manure out from clumps exposes worm larvae to the sunlight, which will kill them. Harrowing should be done in warm weather to ensure as much worm larvae as possible is killed. In order to help break the worm life cycle, cross grazing can be used, as mentioned above, as well as implementing a worming and rotation program. Horses should change paddocks 48 hours after being wormed and should be put into a clean manure free pasture. Egg counts on manure can be a great indication of how effective your worm management program is. Leaving manure on pastures after it is harrowed and well spread can actually fertilise the soil and does put nutrients back into pastures, but care must be taken as to when this is
78 94
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
done. Ideally, manure should be collected and can be sold to gardeners, or placed in a muck heap. If you do get rid of the manure from a property, you will need to ensure that your soil does contain enough nutrients for healthy pasture growth, as you are removing some of these nutrients when you remove the manure. Leaving manure in clumps can cause problems. It allows worm larvae to grow in an ideal environment, and will also encourage uneven paddock growth. Often, horses will not graze where manure has been, even if grass growth is good. If you don’t have the time or resources in order to pick up your manure in your paddocks, at very least harrow them on a regular basis - and always insist that manure be removed from stables, yards and smaller paddocks. Your pasture and horses with thank you!

_ Creating a diet by Zoe Fieldhouse, eQuus Care Nutrition
Perhaps you have a new horse that needs to put on a bit of weight, or maybe you are upping exercise with the better weather and need to increase the amount you feed.
Where do you start? How do you put together a diet that meets all the nutritional needs of your animal? In this article we will take you through the main areas to consider, and point you in the direction of some useful resources along the way.
Roughage, roughage and more roughage! The basis of your horse’s diet needs to be roughage (pasture, hay, chaff etc). Why? It is what the horse has evolved to eat. The design of the digestive tract reflects this: from teeth that grind in a circular motion to a large hind gut that ferments fibrous plant material. The horse needs a minimum of 1% of Body Weight a day in roughage just to maintain digestive tract function. Requirements will be higher with increases in activity level. For instance a 400kg horse in the paddock should ideally be getting 7kg of roughage a day, but this should increase to 10kg a
98 80
The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
day when that horse is in moderate work. A diet high in roughage has numerous health benefits: chewing plant fibre produces saliva which contains bicarbonate which helps to buffer the acid in the stomach. Once swallowed, this fibrous mat of chewed plant matter and saliva help protect the non-glandular upper stomach from sloshes of acid produced by the glandular, lower part of the stomach. Horses worked on an almost empty stomach are at much higher risk of gastric ulcers resulting from acid damage to the upper stomach lining. A steady flow of fibrous feed through the digestive system helps prevent impaction, a cause of colic, at ‘bottle neck’ sites along the digestive tract. Sufficient fibrous material also helps weigh down the colon, which to a large extent is free to move around within the abdomen: without weight to hold it in place it can displace or twist, also common causes of colic. With roughage as the basis of a diet it can be very beneficial to have an analysis carried out of your hay and/or pasture to ascertain its nutrient levels. This can be carried out in Australia by the labs at Feed Central www.feedcentral.com.au. A large range of species and environmental factors go into determining the nutrient values of roughage, but in very broad terms meadow hay has crude protein levels of around 8-13% and provides approximately 9-11 Megajoules per 1kg Dry Matter.

Horses grazing grass ingest approximately 10kg of grass in an hour, which equates to roughly 2kg of Dry Matter (DM). Grass is approximately 20% dry matter and 80% water. Hay is roughly the reverse, about 80% dry matter, 20% moisture. Talk of Megajoules brings us to the first element we need to get right: making sure the total daily food we are feeding provides enough energy for our horse’s bodily functions and energy expenditure through exercise, pregnancy or lactation. A 400kg horse in the paddock needs around 55 MJs a day to maintain body function and condition, but throw in moderate exercise and requirements go up to 78 MJs a day. A great free online resource for this information can be found at www. feedingthehorse.com.au It is a good idea to make regular checks of your horse’s weight with a weight tape and learn to visually assess his Body Condition Score: this rates condition on a scale of 1 (emaciated) to 9 (obese) based on >

by Zoe Fieldhouse, eQuus Care Nutrition fleshy covering at various points on the body. Keeping a regular record will ensure his diet is on track and he is not losing or gaining weight.
If your horse does need to gain weight it takes a gain of 1820kg in body weight to move a horse’s Body Condition Score up one place on the scale. A healthy weight gain is around 225g a day so it is going to take at least 80 days of consistent weight gain to achieve this. If your horse does need to gain weight it takes a gain of 18-20kg in body weight to move a horse’s Body Condition Score up one place on the scale. A healthy weight gain is around 225g a day so it is going to take at least 80 days of consistent weight gain to achieve this. Alternatively if your horse needs to lose weight it is important to aim for a slow and steady weight loss of 0.5% body weight per week. For example in overweight pony that weighs 300kg this would be a loss of 1.5kg per week. Never try to reduce weight by more than 1% per week. Usually feeding between 70-90% of current energy requirements is enough to generate weight loss. When developing a weight reducing ration remember that you must feed at least 1% of body weight in roughage (hay, chaff etc) per day to maintain digestive health. The next big element to get right is protein. A 400kg horse at rest needs around 500g of crude protein a day, and again this will increase with exercise or breeding demands. And protein is needed for more than just than just muscle development - myriad structures and functions within the body also need the amino acids from protein: muscle, hoof, hair, bone, immune
100 82 The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
he gi t lf e s r u o y e iv G your horse the function, energy generation to name a few. As well as meeting overall protein needs, the horse also needs specific “essential” amino acids, such as Lysine which have to be provided through the diet. Some amino acids (non essential) are synthesised within the horse’s system, but the 10 essential amino acids have to come from food. With energy and protein taken care of, the final element of a diet is ensuring vitamin and mineral needs are met. This is where a grass/hay analysis really pays dividends, providing key information on which to build a supplementation regime. Many common health complaints can be traced back to a dietary deficiency: abnormal bone growth, weak bone, muscle weakness, irritability, irregular heartbeat, joint disease, poor hooves, dull coat, tendon and ligament problems, poor wound healing, decreased fertility, respiratory distress. When a mineral deficiency can have such an impact on the health of your horse it only makes sense to ensure that mineral needs are being met. However, it is not quite so simple as certain minerals actually compete for absorption within the body: high phosphorous
_
EQUUSCARENUTRITION
n d g iv e a e g d le w o n k f if t o a lt h ! e h d o o g f o t if e g intake suppresses calcium absorption; high iron suppresses zinc absorption; high zinc affects copper levels. In effect an excess in one mineral can lead to a deficiency in another. To overcome this certain minerals need to be provided within balanced ratios. Supplementing across the board can exacerbate deficiencies by providing more of a mineral that is already in excess, further reducing the absorption of minerals it may compete with. A truly balanced diet will have mineral deficiencies and excesses taken into account and supplementation where required will be within balanced ratios that address specific deficits. If you want the absolute best for your horse, make sure you are providing an adequate and well balanced diet: he is totally reliant on you to provide him with the nutrients he needs for good health and to perform at his best. Nutrition can be used to help exercise adaptation, aid recovery after a hard work out, improve immune function, or handle stress at a competition. Consult a nutritionist, look up resources or use the diet creation tools that are now available so that you are not making feeding decision in the dark. Give yourself the gift of knowledge and your horse the gift of good health.

Showjumping at it’s finest! September 18th to 21st saw Werribee host the Australian Showjumping Championships. As usual, the weather at the National Equestrian Centre was as unpredictible as ever, turning on icy winds and showers on the first day of competition. Ponchos were a necessary (albeit slightly unfashionable) ringside accessory, however the sunshine eventually broke through. The schedule was intense - with four rings running simultaneously. The main arena hosted the Junior, Young Rider and Senior Championships rounds (3 in all) as well as the Stars Of The Future Event and the Australian Mini Prix. Running concurrently was the the teams teams event even in each category. Open Height and Consolation classes filled the indoor EV Trust Arena and The Pakair Arena. The Barton Equine Arena hosted both the Emerald and Ruby series, as well as the crowd pleasing BCNA Feature Class. The shopping was a horse lover’s paradise with a huge number of trade stands filled with bargain buys, while the big screen

kept all spectators up to date with the action no matter where on the grounds they were. Commentary was also broadcast on FM radio! The only complaint? Between riders the music was a little too Taylor Swift-heavy. (Try getting that out of your head after four days of repetition - not easy!) Jeep adverts also featured heavily thanks to marquee sponsor Werribee Jeep, the event’s platinum sponsor. Much to our delight, the dutch pancake van (a fixture at Werribee) was back, allowing us a sneaky treat between jumping rounds - but we were reliably informed that a really good cup or of coffee was a little difficult to come by. Once again, Racing Victoria’s Off The Track program offered incentives for ex-racehorses in competition, and there was action aplenty, challenging courses, beautiful horses and exciting showjumping rounds. A stellar event and an amazing 2014 Australian Showjumping Championships!

PASTURE
Decreasing the volume of horses on the property can stop paddocks from becoming Tom McDermott & Diamond B Jimmychoo mud pits, although realistically, no paddock will ever be mud free, and often mud surrounding troughs, shelters, and gateways cannot be avoided. If possible, make traffic alternatives to avoid one area from bearing all of the traffic. If this is not possible and the area is flooded longterm, accept that this area will not be useful grazing land.

HORSEMANSHIP >> HORSEMANSHIP
TRAINING FOR THE TRAIL
Trail Riding Trust
Often when we head out on the trail, we consider it a relaxing ride for us, and the horse and tend to ‘switch off’ our ‘normal’ riding behavior and get into ‘ Sunday Drive’ mode. Unfortunately, out on a trail might be where our horse needs our guidance and support the most, and we turn into ‘passengers’ which causes him to feel insecure, lack confidence and then ‘misbehave’. This doesn’t mean we need to avoid trails, and it doesn’t mean we need to ‘ride every stride’ out on the trail either. What it does mean is that we need to look for a happy medium, that the horse and rider are both comfortable with. It also means that the first part of the ride, as the horse is warming up both physically and mentally, we may need to do a number of exercises to get him ‘in the office’. Even though we are out on the trail, we still want our horse following the ‘rules’ – listen to me, follow my direction and be confident. But we have to follow the same rules for him! Adopting a set of exercises (say 4 or 5), both mounted and on the ground, that you can master and then repeat wherever you go (trail, shows, home) will go a long way in building your horses confidence in you. For example – you head out on the trail, which your horse may be a little uncomfortable with and you start asking him to do exercises that he has mastered – quarters in, leg yield etc. Soon enough your horse thinks ‘hang on a minute, I know this stuff, I’m alright. He gets confidence in knowing what is expected of him. Have you seen a toddler watch the same cartoon over and over again ? Do you know why? Because he loves knowing whats going to happen! He gets confidence from that. Horses are no different! Find something he can take confidence from and do that when he is nervous.
Ask Tanja...
Is it time to slap your horse? I don’t mean physically slapping him – its more of a metaphorical slap. I met a mare over the weekend who had a separation issue. On the Saturday we took her paddock mate out on a short ride – still on the property, and they could still hear each other and see each other most of the time. By the time we got back (30 minutes) she was in such a state that she was bashing herself up against the stable gate, in a lather of sweat, and calling uncontrollably. Even when we returned, and her paddock mate was no more than 10 metres away – she continued this behaviour – a danger to herself, her handler and the other horses around. This is not normal behaviour. In a wild mob situation, this mare would probably not develop such attachment issues – but if she did – she would be killed for it. Her herd would not be able to take the risk of such detrimental behaviour – think about it – a mare calling out constantly ? The predators would soon know where you were. A mare that thrashed about ? She would soon injure herself or another horse nearby. The herd would either abandon her, or attack her. I’m not going to take such drastic action. But I am going to work with her on the ground, in a safe environment, while her mate gets taken away – so I can prove to her that she is ok. I call it a slap because its like when you watch a horror movie – and the damsel starts screaming uncontrollably, and inevitably someone walks up and slaps her – this ‘brings her round’ so she is once again a valuable member of the group. This is what we need to do with our horse that lacks confidence – we need to work her physically and mentally, to let her know “hey – you’re ok”. Your horse doesn’t want to behave like this – its not normal or natural, so help them feel good about themselves. Thats what support is all about.

PROJECTHOPE EQUINENEWS
Euthanising a horse in a herd situation I have had the honour of looking after several of Project Hope’s ‘older gentlemen’ over the past years and it is a sad fact of life that they do not live as long as I would like them to. In managing their deaths, I have learned something on how other horses respond, and would like to share these lessons. Charlie Bones (nee Prince) was the first one to go. He had to be put down at 35 as he was just worn out and becoming a danger to himself and others. To save the other horses the trauma of this event, I removed Charlie from the paddock and had him put down on the other side of the garage. Big mistake: Charlie was in his own world and didn’t care, he died with a mouthful of lucerne and a smile on his face. But the others sensed the emotion of the situation and became quite distressed, running up and down the fence line, calling frantically. They called and searched for him for well over a week - it was heartbreaking to watch.
Bobby Bones (nee Sabi) had a stroke last November at the ripe old age of 38. The vet came out to euthanise him and this time, I left him in the paddock with the others. They knew something was wrong with him and stood close, watching intently but calmly. Once he was dead, I covered him left him in the paddock overnight. The horses stood vigil over him for a long, long time, occasionally sniffing him. Then the oldest gelding gently rested his hoof on his shoulder, sighed deeply and walked away with the others following. They did not look back and ignored his body until it was removed: there was no drama and no trauma. This was also heartbreaking to watch, but it was a lovely, gentle farewell from friends to a friend. I strongly recommend that people faced with similar situations consider these options when making their decisions. - Peta, Project Hope Member

Managing laminitic horses and ponies can also be a challenge. Despite being overweight, they still require access to hay or roughage 24/7. Locking a laminitic pony away with nothing to graze on, or feeding any horse sporadically can cause digestive issues such as colic and stomach ulcers, as well as causing the horse to develop stable vices through boredom if he is not able to graze. Serious problems can occur if horses or ponies are starved for periods longer than 3-4 hours. Heading into Spring, a lot of metabolic and laminitic type horses and ponies will need locking up off the grass which can be stressful for them, so a slow feeder gives them longer access to forage to help with their physical and mental health. also up to 70% cheaper than concrete or bitumen surfaces! Brilliant!
“Trough pads have always been an expensive and timely exercise and we have been looking around for a cost effective and simple solution for some time. The Diamond Grids are an easy solution and they saved us over $300 per trough compared to cementing the pads. If we ever need to move a trough, we can pull the grids up and move them to the ? next site. We plan on installing the grids in gateways and can see the potential for using them in cattle yards that are prone to mud. - Wayne Flintham, CSIRO, Lansdown Research Station

The Tail End brought to you by...
Trials and tribulations of buying and selling equines Buying a horse is a difficult enough process. There's scouring adverts online to find your dream horse, calling the seller, getting more information, going for a 'test ride', organising a vet check, negotiating purchase price, payment plans, transport - and of course, handing over your hard earned cash. Finding your new best friend can be a hassle, but as usual, The Stable Magazine has some wonderful tips, hints and a little bit of advice on the subject... When you sell your own horse, it’s expected that you highlight your horse’s positive points - and perhaps inadvertently omit the negatives. But there’s a limit- and we recommend full disclosure - not for any reason other than the welfare of the horse itself. Sure, Misty might have a few bad habits, and we know you love her to bits (read: you wear rose coloured glasses and simply everything she does is wonderful), but if you do find yourself advertising her for sale, don’t forget to tell the prospective new owners that you actually cannot find a farrier who will shoe her. When you’re in the market to buy your next superstar, you may stumble across the same. Horse people are all a little insane. It’s just one of those facts of life. (Seriously now, who in their right mind would have horses?! If they’re not injured or costing you a fortune, they’re dumping you out of the saddle every second day!) So when it comes to buying your next horse, keep in mind that what you see is not always what you get!
152 The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com
Rules of horse buying: 1. Don’t EVER buy a horse sight unseen. It may not be exactly as described. Horror stories include malnourished horses unloading from trucks, (requiring intense veterinary treatment and rehabilitation) or horses that are extremely unsuitable for their new novice riders (although described as beginners ponies). Always go and see the horse and ride it yourself! 2. Don’t hand over any payment unless you’re taking the horse with you. Some exceptions can be made for putting a deposit on a horse, or choosing a payment plan - in all cases, get a receipt and a contract. What we mean here is don’t get sucked in to completing a bank transfer three weeks before you’re able to make it out to view the horse or pick it up. 3. Carefully vet the horse you’re looking to buy. If things go awry after the sale of a horse, it’s not actually always automatically the seller’s fault. (Yep -
SPOTLIGHT crazy, right!?) Choose the horse you purchase carefully. Ensure it’s the right age, height and experience level to suit your riding skills (or lack thereof!). Visit and ride it a few times. Tack it up yourself. Unsaddle and groom it yourself - get to know the horse before you make the decision to buy it. If the horse becomes unsuitable some time down the track, you cannot expect the seller to take the horse back or offer you your money back. Within a few weeks - perhaps. It doesn’t hurt to ask politely. After the horse has been in your care and handled by you for a period of time, it is less likely.

4. Bring a friend - or an instructor! Having a second set of eyes is useful - even if only to play ‘devil’s advocate’. If you’re not experienced in the horse buying game (meaning, if you haven’t already started your horse collection), take someone who is more experienced with you to view all potential new horses. 5. Get a vet check. This is not a process to be used as a bargaining chip or to discredit a seller - it is to determine whether the horse you are looking to purchase is fit for the job. Any injuries that may be discovered may also be news to the seller. A vet shouldn’t ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ a horse merely undertake a thorough examination to ensure the horse is sound and suitable for your purpose.

Horse Buying Top Tips: Buy your horse from a reputable seller or better yet, through recommendation from friends or word of mouth. (Have you seen Horsezone’s Connect? This fancy new service allows you to see whether you have any mutual friends with sellers advertising their horses for sale - giving buyers and sellers greater confidence in knowing who they are buying from or selling to!) Be prepared to pay a decent amount for a good horse. To coin a popular and accurate adage, you get what you pay for. Well, that is, unless you get sucked in or ripped off - check the ‘going rate’ for horses similar to what you’re looking at and make your own objective decision. Don’t get sucked in by ‘big mare eyes’ or sucked in to spending good money on a rescue horse. Yeah, ok. So we’ve all done it at one time or another. Just try not to do it next time, ok?
