EQUINENEWS Hendra vaccine controversy: Heath Ryan & Vicki Roycroft speak out. In a recent post on Facebook, legendary Australian show jumper Vicki Roycroft has voiced her opinion of the EA policy of mandatory Hendra vaccination. Vicki, and Olympian Heath Ryan, are two of our highprofile riders leading the charge against mandatory vaccination in competition horses. While EA announced that as of July 2014 horses would not be allowed to compete unless vaccinated, it has not been enforced due to the high number of objections to the policy. The by-law was revoked in February 2015, but mandatory vaccination is not off the table. In an interview with The Maitland Mercury (www. maitlandmercury.com.au) Heath Ryan spoke to reporter Abby Thorne about his experience with the vaccine. “We experienced very unpleasant reactions: raised temperatures, suffering at the site of injection and horses couldn’t put their necks down. Horses have died, some horses haven’t been able to go (compete) again, and the Hendra vaccination has caused that reaction. These horses probably had pre-existing conditions.” “It is a vaccination to save human lives, not horses.” Australian show jumper Gail Hunter told Thorne that one of her champion horses was ‘severely affected’ by the vaccination and ‘went from jumping 1.4m to not being able to jump 90cm.’ “Oh I Say became unco-ordinated and fell over small jumps, after winning at Sydney a Royal Easter Show (she then) couldn’t jump 90cm after the Hendra vaccines.” A spokesperson for EA is reported as stating that “The panel responsible for this review is looking at all available data, as well as concerns raised by our members and clubs through the public submission period.” “Individual horse owners are strongly urged to discuss vaccination with their vets to determine the best course of action for their situation.”

EQUINENEWS Rider core strength improvement equates in more even weight distribution and longer strides!

Want to improve that extended trot?

British research has shown that an improvement in rider core strength can actually increase a horses stride length, and improve weight distribution of the rider in the saddle. Ten medium level dressage horses and their riders were fitted with pressure sensitive pads underneath their saddles prior to the riders undertaking a core strengthening fitness program, and again at the completion of the exercise program, which spanned a period of eight weeks. The results showed improvement in every rider’s symmetry, with a decrease in mean left-right pressure differential. The average stride in the horses was found to have increased by a whopping 8.4%. Researcher Alexandra Hampton evaluated the horses and riders in the study on three dependent variables; equine stride length, left-right saddle mean pressure difference and maximum total force of the saddle on the horses back. She told delegates at the international Society for Equitation science that previous work had identified that most riders display a preference for side laterality at the pelvis and shoulders. She added that while more research was required, all riders showed a significant improvement, and that the research provided an important avenue for improving horse welfare.

Forget putting your mare under lights why not attach them to her face!? Designed to successfully advance the breeding season of mares, ensuring reproductive activity in early-foaling mares, and to prevent long gestation, Irish company Equilume is branching out to the US market. They developed a light mask which fits under a halter and directs blue light to one of the mare’s eyes. Equilume Chief Executive, Peter Brady said that the company (a spin-off of the University of Dublin) has enjoyed success in Australia, and was now taking on new employees to target the US market.

EQUINENEWS

What is your horses BCI? UK horse feed manufacturer Spillers have released a handy online calculator to allow horse owners to assess their horse’s body condition score. Similar in theory to the Body Mass Index (BMI) used for our own weight gauge, the BCI is a more objective way of calculating horses body condition based on mathematical equations. Measurements required include the horses height, neck circumference, heart-girth and belly-girth. The measurements are then entered on the Spillers website (www.spillers-feeds.com/help-and-advice) and a BCI score is given from 1-9 to indicate a body fat percentage. The BCI calculator was developed in conjunction with the University of Melbourne in collaboration with the Waltham Equine Studies Group, and should be a useful tool in tracking weight loss in obese horses and ponies.

A study into the genetics and performance of successful racehorses has shown that ‘elite’ broodmares are more likely to produce quality offspring than mares of poorer performance or breeding, despite the stallion used. Australian and Chinese researchers noted that many studies has focused in identifying genes associated with athletic ability of Thoroughbreds, “but few have considered difference in maternal and paternal heritability of athletic ability,” they said. 675 Thoroughbred foals were included in the study, divided into four categories: - Elite dams and elite sires - Elite dams and poor sires - Poor dams and elite sires - Poor dams and poor sires The performance of the foals was then compared, with (unsurprisingly) the foals coming from elite dams and elite sires leading the pack. What was surprising was that foals from the group with poor dams and elite sires tended to perform worse than those with poor dams and poor sires. The foals from the elite mares tended to perform better, regardless of if the sire was classified as poor or elite. “The results show that the heritability of race performance between dams and foals is much higher than that between sires and foals, and that this difference is statistically significant.” “These findings suggest that the maternal line may play an important role in the selective breeding of athletic performance in Thorougbreds.” How much did Black Caviar’s last foal sell for again?!

TOP FOUR horse quotes on ranker.com - but chosen by us!

‘KNOWING A HORSE WITHIN A FEW SECONDS’ “Klaus did not have anything to do with horses before the age of 29. And yet, only a few years after he encountered his first horse, he wrote the book ‘Dancing with Horses’ – it took the horse world by storm. Klaus has the ability to ‘know’ a horse within a few seconds and within a few minutes of the first meeting, he establishes a relationship so firmly that anything after that is completely based on trust. In his Borderline Demonstrations he transforms dangerous, nervous, traumatized, any kind of horse into cooperative companions. They recognize him as their leader, and become willing partners in groundwork and under saddle.” - www.hempfling.com Videos well worth watching: HEMPFLING - HORSES: https://youtu.be/FbIwTqKd8HE MINUTES TO CHANGE A LIFE: A stallion abused as a foal: https://youtu.be/Y_NnFauhYSU ORDER & HARMONY IN MINUTES - An Educational Documentary: https://youtu.be/nQ5N0-sMe14

Horses rugs are left on in 27 degree weather (because a canvas is by itself is not enough, you clearly need under rugs) - and when you remove the top layer as the horse is in a sweat, the owner doesn’t thank you, but instead cracks it with you for trying to do her a favour!

Testimonials Equiheal products are used and recommended by equine veterinarians, farriers & leading trainers. “I have used Equiheal Stable Ointment for treating horses with a variety of skin and hoof disorders. I have found it to be a very effective product, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone thinking of using it for any of the following skin or hoof disorders. Greasy Heel, Non-specific Dermatitis, Thrush, Seedy Toe, Open Hoof Abscess, Hoof Soreness, Cuts and Abrasions.”

Toby Ryan, BSC BVMS - Equine Veterinarian Surgeon “We at Griffiths Racing have been using Equiheal products for several months. Not only have we successfully treated Greasy Heel but have used it as a general stable treatment for most other ailments including wither sores, skin conditions and other abrasions. Recently we have been using the Hoof & Sole product which has also had positive results. This year has seen an increase in hoof related conditions due largely to the wet conditions Victorians are experiencing. I have used both products and they have greatly minimized the amount of hoof and sole issues we were getting prior to introducing the product. I can highly recommend it to all the equine industry.”

Robbie Griffiths Racing Stables, Victoria Equestrian enthusiast Angela Woodacre had an ongoing problem with her horse Banjo, and had tried many products without success until her farrier suggested trying Equiheal Stable Ointment. This is what she had to say after her horse could not hold a shoe on for the past seven years due to soft soles and walls in all four of her horses hooves. “I applied Equiheal Stable Ointment daily into the souls and walls, combined with an oral hoof supplement. Banjo has been shod on a regular basis for the past six months without the loss of a shoe. I’m very happy and relieved by the outcome, and I would highly recommend Equiheal Stable Ointment.”

Angela Woodacre, Toodyay WA

Anthony Adams, Broken Hill NSW “I had a horse that was suffering from soft and thin sole. A trainer of forty years said it was the worst soft sole he had ever seen. On recommendation from another trainer, I tried Equiheal Stable Ointment. I packed the frog and sole with Equiheal Ointment and then placed a hoof boot over it for sixteen hours daily. After four days he was walking freely, and after seven days he was able to start track working. My stable rider was so amazed that she now calls it the magic ointment.”

“One of my horses` The Black Star’ was a white hoofed horse. He was prone to shelly hoof, abscess and hoof soreness. Each night I brushed a thick cover of Equiheal Stable Ointment into the frog and sole and then placed a hoof boot which I left on overnight. This allowed me to keep training him daily. He went on to win thirteen races at Mildura and was named horse of the year. I use Equiheal for a prevention and treatment for all my horses skin and hoof disorders including greasy heel, whiteline, soft sole, cuts and abrasions.”

KENTUCKYEQUINERESEARCH

HORSE WATER REQUIREMENTS:

5

IMPORTANT FACTS There are six nutrients in a horse’s diet: carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. Each of those is considered essential, yet water is king of the hill.

Horses normally consume between 5 and 15 gallons (approximately 20–55 liters) of water in a 24-hour period. “A horse can live for almost a month without food, but within a mere 48 hours without water a horse can begin to show signs of colic and can quickly develop an impaction, lethargy, and life-threatening sequelae. A horse can only survive about five days without water,” shares Peter Huntington, B.V.Sc., M.A.C.V.Sc., director of nutrition at Kentucky Equine Research (Australia).

1 2

Consider these five points to ensure the proper quantity and quality of water is being offered to your horses year-round: Horses normally consume between 5 and 15 gallons (approximately 20–55 liters) of water in a 24-hour period. The individually stabled horse is usually easy to monitor for water intake if you are filling five-gallon buckets two or three times a day. If a horse is kept on pasture or in a herd on pasture, assessing water intake becomes increasingly challenging, but not impossible. “Hydration can easily be assessed in individuals within a herd by feeling their gums to ensure they are moist and pinching a small area of skin on their neck or shoulder to watch it bounce back to its normal position,” advises Huntington.

22

Field-kept horses obtain moisture from pasture. In fact, fresh pasture is approximately 60–80% moisture, meaning they obtain a substantial amount of water while grazing. In contrast, grains, concentrates, and baled hay contain far less moisture, which means horses need to drink more to meet their water needs. Another factor to consider in a herd situation is pecking order. If you suspect that one or more horses are being chased away from the water trough, consider adding a second trough.

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

3

Weather and exercise can impact water consumption. Typically, horses consume more water during the hot, humid summer months. That said, some horses actually drink more water in the winter than in the

hot summer (recall that the quality of forages is generally not as good as in the summer, with less moisture). It’s also important to bear in mind that horses are different and do not need to consume the same amount of water to remain healthy.

4

Underlying health issues can impact water consumption. Diarrhea or chronic kidney disease in particular can cause increased water losses from the body that need to be replaced. Such horses will need extra water to facilitate recovery and maximize quality of life.

>

5

“Natural” sources of water such as streams or ponds should not be used as the horse’s primary water supply. If they choose to drink from those sources, it is not usually a concern, but they should still be offered fresh water.

The quality of streams and ponds cannot be guaranteed, and pollution or algae blooms can impact the safety of those water sources at various times throughout the year. Horses can also have difficulty accessing the water in ponds and streams if the shores are muddy or frozen. >

Drink-Up can be used daily, when travelling, competing, away from home or even as an after work treat.

As well as chasing the floating ingredients, Drink-Up contains KER Restore which helps stimulate the thirst response, encouraging your horse to drink every drop!

Is Drink-Up going to change my horse’s behaviour? While Drink-Up contains a small amount of grain, there is no evidence to suggest that it will change your horse’s behaviour. The amount of grain is unlikely to result in a rise in blood glucose which is often associated with hyperactive behaviour.

Can I just add a handful of grain to a bucket of water and get the same result?

What can I do to encourage my horse to try Drink-Up? Trials have shown that most horses love Drink-Up and its highly palatable blend of ingredients. However, if you have a very fussy horse try scooping some of the ingredients from the bottom of the bucket, offer it to them, then offer the bucket containing the Drink-Up again. Additionally, place Drink-Up in the water and leave it for 30 minutes before offering to your horse to further enhance the flavour of the water.

Where can I find out more information and watch videos of horses drinking Drink-Up?

Drink-Up has been scientifically developed to be more than a handful of grain! After extensive trials, this combination of ingredients, including natural flavouring and inclusion of KER Restore has proven itself to increase water intake more than any other combination.

or you can contact KER’s free Nutrition Consultation Service on 1800 772 198 or email advice@ker.com

Is Drink-Up safe for my horse with insulin resistance or laminitis?

Do I still need to give my horse an electrolyte replacer if I am using Drink-Up?

While Drink-Up does contain a small amount of grain and molasses, it is safe for most horses. If you have any concerns about using Drink-Up, KER recommends that you contact your veterinarian for advice.

While Drink-Up contains KER Restore, it is not a complete electrolyte dose. Drink-Up is useful to add to the water to encourage horses to drink, but will not replace all the electrolytes lost in sweat.

Using the full recommended amount of Restore is required to replenish these. It is always advisable that horses have access to fresh, clean water when using electrolytes as this stimulates their thirst response. Drink-Up and Restore can be used together for maximum rehydration.

How do I use Drink-Up? Using Drink-Up is easy! Empty one 80g sachet of Drink-Up into 5 litres of clean, fresh water and stir to enhance flavour. Offer immediately or wait 30 minutes to further enhance flavour. For very fussy horses, familiarise them with Drink-Up at home and encourage them to try the water by scooping the product from the bottom of the bucket and offering it to them.

Where can I buy Drink-Up? Drink-Up is available through your local saddlery or stock feed store. If you can’t find it at your local store, contact KER on 1800 772 198 and we can direct you to a store that stocks Drink-Up near you.

I’ve been told not to give grain to my horse as he has a history of tying up. Can I still use Drink-Up? While Drink-Up contains a small amount of grain, it is unlikely to cause tying up. Tying up can be a result of many different factors including but not limited to genetics, fitness, diet and dehydration. If dehydration has been one of the causes of your horse tying up in the past, Drink-Up, in conjunction with Restore may be beneficial as it has been shown to increase water intake in 90% of horses. If you are still concerned, contact your veterinarian or KER’s free Nutrition Consultation Service on 1800 772 198 to discuss your horse’s individual needs.

Is Drink-Up safe to use in young, growing horses? Yes! Drink-Up can be given to all horses including young and growing horses. If you have any particular concerns about using Drink-Up with your horse, please contact the KER free Nutrition Consultation Service for advice on 1800 772 198.

Can I add Drink-Up to the water source in my horse’s stable? Yes, however, KER advises emptying any left over water and Drink-Up after 12 hours if it is not consumed. It is always important that horses have access to fresh, clean water. When using Drink-Up in very hot and humid conditions, this should be done after 8 hours.

My horse won’t drink out of his water trough in the paddock. Will adding Drink-Up help? Drink-Up is designed to be used when horses are drinking from a bucket. It is not advisable to add Drink-Up to water troughs in a paddock as the ingredients that sink to the bottom will not be consumed within 12 hours. If your horse won’t drink the water available to him in his paddock, try filling a 5L bucket with this water and adding Drink-Up. Once he becomes more familiar with this water, he may start drinking the water out of the trough all by himself.

Avoid the mud pits! Once the ground is a little more firm underfoot, it’s time to take stock of those well used laneways and high traffic areas. It’s a great idea to have a look at the drainage on your property, and a chance to fix those problem areas that were a quagmire in the wet. Consider your options and look into resting high traffic areas now. Solutions are available to ensure gateway and trough areas don’t turn into unusable areas. Laying crushed rock or a soil retainment system now can help to provide firmer footing for next winter. If your sheds are on lower ground, you can also look at raising the floor using old bricks that you might be able to pick up cheap or free. Use crushed rock inside your shed (or brickies sand) as a base, lay your bricks on top after compacting the base thoroughly, and sprinkle some cement over the top. Sweep the cement into the gaps between the bricks, give it a hose, and you’ll have yourself a nice solid floor! Just be aware that if your base isn’t compacted down well, your bricks may sink or move. If you choose not to cement them in, replacing any bricks that do sink is an easy job!

Clean the troughs There’s no excuse for a slimy green trough - so break out the scrubbing brush and get busy! As the weather gets warmer it’s essential that you ensure your horse has free access to cool water at all times. Check that automatic troughs are in good working order and refilling as they should. Investing in a cheap strainer (or recycling your old kitchen sieve!) is also a good idea for a quick daily skim of troughs to remove any leaf litter or stray hay strands.

CAREERS> MARCUS OLDHAM

Big hats, large stakes,

GREAT EXCITEMENT! Just imagine how many possibilities there are in life with a Marcus Oldham Diploma of Equine Management under your saddle. Samantha Baillie, who graduated in 2009 from Marcus Oldham in Geelong, combined riding for Thoroughbred trainer, John Leek, and training her own eventing horses, with more university studies. Victorian raised, and keen to see the world, she took every uni holiday opportunity and in two years had backpacked in over 30 countries, making many friends and chalking-up unbelievable experiences. Sammy saw the equine industry from so many interesting angles and

36

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

gained a wealth of knowledge that can’t be taught. It is an experience she can share and encourage everyone to do, as racing and equestrian is different in every country. After experiencing eventing and racing in England, racing in Hong Kong and riding across Kenya in Africa, Sammy came home. In 2012 she took a short term position as an Assistant in Sponsorship at the Victoria Racing Club (VRC). The Victoria Racing Club has been operating as the

premier racing club in Australia for over 150 years. The first week of November is famously known for one of Australia’s most popular sporting events, the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the historical race, Emirates Melbourne Cup. The VRC currently has 41 sponsors including Emirates, AAMI, Crown, Myer and James Boag.

“She was on such a high that week, completely addicted to her work and couldn’t get enough of the excitement and thrill.” Sponsorship was something completely different for Sammy. She moved from being in the stables at 4am to walking into an office at 9am; she traded in her riding boots for a pair of heels, and her helmet for millinery. Her first Melbourne Cup Carnival was a complete eyeopener to the Corporate World of Racing. The time and money invested by every sponsor and media partner was breath-taking. Directors and CEOs had travelled from interstate and overseas to observe the racing, the events, the fashion and the hospitality in which their company had invested. Throughout her first Melbourne Cup Carnival Sammy was based in the mounting yard helping out with the trophy presentations. Over the week she meet so many fantastic people from all fields of racing: jockeys, trainers, sponsors, media partners and VRC directors and took every opportunity to learn and network. She was on such a high that week, completely addicted to her work and couldn’t get enough of the excitement and thrill.

level. Keeping this at the back of her mind has always helped, especially when working on an event or campaign. Sponsorship provides great resources for broadening the Thoroughbred racing image, prestige and credibility. Sponsorship is vital in the industry and it’s most important in Sammy’s role, to be continually thinking of new avenues for sponsors to invest in the industry. For many companies, sponsorship is one of the fastest growing marketing tools in recent years. Sponsoring an event or a race allows access to a wide range of audiences both in the digital and media market as well as the on-course audience of celebrities, members, trainers, owners and general public. With the Melbourne Cup Carnival being one of the largest outdoor events in the world, sponsors also have international brand exposure. Samantha loves the exciting Spring Carnival with Victoria Racing Club, which is a world leader in Thoroughbred racing, event management and entertainment. “I am continuing to learn in this fast moving industry and Marcus Oldham is where it all started. It opened my eyes to the diversity of the equine industry and I am truly grateful for the skills, knowledge, friends and connections which it provided, leading me to a rewarding and successful career.”

Her enthusiasm over that Melbourne Cup Carnival is what secured her a permanent position and ten months later, moving into a Sponsorship Executive position. Over time she has learnt that sponsorship at Flemington is unique in a way, from other sporting events. Their sponsors take pride in being a part of the Flemington Family. The Melbourne Cup Carnival which was once a traditional sporting event is now typically known for its excellence in sport, hospitality and event management and of course, elegant fashion. SHOW COLOU Let’s face it -

most of us love the idea of kitting out our horses in the latest gear. For so fashion far outweighs the ‘rider clothing’ budget; we love co-ordinating and matching our hor there’s the percentage of us with what we like to call ‘rug fetishes’. (If your horse has more th your hand. If they’re carefully colour co-ordinated, leave it raised...!) In our dream stable, every horse has it’s own individual colour co-ordinated grooming kit, matching halter and lead rope set, a co-ordinated set of rugs for every season and weather condition, matching feed bucket, monogrammed colour co-ordinated saddle cloth and, of course, a beautiful flashy browband to tie it all together. Choosing colours for your horse might seem like just a bit of fun, but there’s actually a lot more to it when it comes to the show ring. Just as with the latest fashions on the catwalk, how you use colours can really influence the impression of your horse in the arena. What you wear in terms of colours and prints can highlight your horse’s best points, and conversely, also draw attention to flaws that may be less obvious had you chosen another colour!

Choosing

SHOW COLOURS shade (and then being able to find or have matching accessories made) is important. There’s also nothing worse than having a slightly off colour match, so if you choose an obscure colour, be prepared to take the time to ensure your saddle cloth, stock and browband are the same shade, not three shades apart! When we choose a colour for our horse, really, we are choosing up to three - but definitely no more. If you have more than three colours, it starts to get a little bit busy, and a tad OTT. One bold colour should be the basis of your choice, highlighted with a secondary colour if required, and then trimmed with a third colour. The base colour should provide a contrast for your horse’s coat colour. The secondary colour is optional (further contrast for additional emphasis if your horse is a solid or plain colour) and the third colour; your trim colour, will usually be a neutral or offsetting colour - a white, black, silver or gold. Let’s say that you have a black horse, and you have chosen a vibrant red as his base colour. You can then choose to go straight for your trim colour, in a white, silver or gold, as all three of these trim colours will accentuate and offset the red you have chosen as the base colour, while providing a contrast with your horse’s coat colour. If you’re happy with red and silver, leave it at that! Now let’s say that you would like a secondary colour to go in - you like the idea of red and blue colour combination for your black horse. Beautiful! Just don’t go with a blue that is too deep - a navy blue will get lost against the black, so go for a more vibrant or royal blue. You can then add your trim colour back in - but it has to be able to offset the red and blue you have chosen as well as contrast your horse’s black coat. A

40

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

white would probably do well to offset the colours you are working with, particularly if it also highlights any white markings your horse might have. Pastel colours can be very useful for creating a calmer overall impression. If you tend to gravitate towards less vibrant colours, they will tend to work better on horses with lighter coat colours. Colour is very subjective; there’s no definitive ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ colour combination, and sometimes something out of the box can really create an impression, but only if it’s done well! If you’re not feeling your inner artist, go with a tried and true colour combination rather than something that’s too ‘off the wall’. After all, you want to create a lasting impression in the right way!

As a general guide, the colour groups serve to give you an indication of generally what colours will go with your horse, but it really is a case of assessing the horse’s individual coat colour. Any horse with a red tinge through it could be placed in the Chestnut category. The Black Category is more for horses without a red tinge in the coat, so if your Dark Bay is more reddish than chocolate, go for the colours in the Chestnut category. Neutrals are without either a red tinge or a black tinge in the body/coat colour - so if your buckskin is particularly smutty, try the colours in the Black horse category. Pintos, Appaloosas and horses with lots of chrome can be tricky to choose colours for. If the horse has minimal white, use the base colours above as a guide. If your horse is mostly white, you can stick with colours recommended for the ‘neutral’ coloured horse group above, perhaps

44

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

highlighted with a secondary colour from the recommendations for your horse’s second coat colour. Horses with loud markings are likely not to need a third colour included.

LOTS ‘O CHROME?!

Too much white can make colour choice tricky. As mentioned above, two colours (without a third or trim colour) is probably enough. Horses with big white face markings are also difficult to choose a browband for accents of white will be lost against the horses face marking, so avoid white or silver if your horse already has lots of chrome on his forehead. A gold trim could possibly work if it ties in with your other colours - it is really dependent on the placement of markings. If you’ve got lots of white on the legs, and none on the face, white in the browband can really set your horse off, particularly if he is in the Chestnut or Black base coat category.

Cal Rai Ear Nets with 3D Spacer® Fabric The Cal Rei Ear net is made of 3D Spacer fabric and offers many advantages compared to the other conventional fabrics you can find on the market. Its lightness with breathable properties and soft inner layer gives the maximum comfort to the horse granting him a feeling of freedom while providing relief from flies.

Silicone Plaiting Bands Once you have used silicone rubber plaiting bands, you will never use traditional plaiting bands again. Unlike ordinary rubber plaiting bands, silicone bands don’t ping off and break - they have an excellent tear resistance and are extremely stretchy.

SHOWFEATURE

COLOUR CREATES ILLUSIONS

Interior decorators know the secrets to using colour to their advantage. If you have a small space to work with and paint it a light or white colour, you create the illusion of more space. If you have a finite area, just as a floor space, and lay a dark coloured carpet, it serves to make the room look smaller. Black and dark colours serve to shorten and accentuate, while light colours and shades of white or cream tend to highlight. When it comes to your own outfit, the same principle can be applied. If you’re a little top heavy, go for a darker jacket and lighter jods.

FASHION & SEASONS

While trends come and go, good quality gear will last you quite a few seasons. Budget for clothing that will last, and be prepared to spend a little more for something of better quality, rather than something cheap that will only last you a season. Pick good core items - white shirts, fawn or white breeches. For your own outfits, items that are naturally colours can be versatile, and can be dressed up with accessories to match your horse’s colours, like lapel pins, stocks, and show hats in the case of showing horses in hand. If you’re more cowgirl than equestrian, you do have more options in the way of colourful prints - so go for it! Bold colours can be really eye catching, just make sure that the judge is looking at your horse and not you!

BLING!

Love it or hate it, it seems that bling is still ‘in’. Just keep it to a minimum. Unless you’re a trick riding cowgirl, then the more sequins and sparkles, the better! Bling is useful as a highlight, just go easy on the glitter. You still want your horse to be seen in the arena and taken seriously, so use diamantes cleverly and sparingly to set off your outfit, rather than having them comprise the bulk of your look!

2015 RASV ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW One of the benefits with such a high profile class run at such a public event is the exposure of equestrian events to the public. Sure, the rides, carnival, fairy floss and showbags are all crowdpulling attractions in their own right, but it’s the agriculture side of the show that we love, and thankfully, the equine and animal events are still thriving, preserving a rich element of heritage at Melbourne’s largest event of it’s kind. This year was no exception - especially as the fences looked a strange combination of inviting and daunting (let’s face it, they’re certainly not Pony Club fences!) and the horses and riders are bold and courageous at tackling such a course. A field of 20 horse and riders (well, actually, 17 riders and 20 horses) took to the Herald Sun arena. Chris’s Chugg, Vicki Roycroft and James Arkins all had multiple rides in the event, while they themselves seasoned competitors with a great chance of taking out the blue ribbon, competition was stiff, with the current Australian Showjumping Champion, David Cameron and RrDyranta also in the mix. Course designer David Shepherd had done a wonderful job, and before the event commenced he spoke with Mc Brett Hickey about the course. Predictions were that there would be at least five or six clear rounds in the first round before the jump off. Conditions were absolutely perfect, the arena footing was good, and while there were a couple of interesting turns and options on course, nothing looked to be particularly frightening.. But it’s one of those things, you never know until the horses and riders hit the course! First into the arena was James Arkins and Da Vinci’s Pride. Two rails down and under time. Vicki followed on her first ride of the day, the little bay, Congo Z who seems to be really coming into his own, looking even better than the last time we saw him early this year at Boneo Park.

2015 RASV ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW Congo and Vicki managed a time of 87.57 (under time allowed) and just knocked a rail off at the treble. Andrew Lamb was out next, with CP Argento, by Vivant. The bay gelding looked good, but the pair had some rails down, just enough to see them out of contention for the second round. Following on from Andrew was New Zealand native Lisa Coupe, on Amaretto NZ, by far the competitor who had travelled the furthest distance to make the event! Two rails down for Lisa meant eight penalty points. Brook Dobbin was next in on Silvo - one of our collective personal favourites. (Sorry Brook, we mean the horse, but you’re ok too!). One rail down meant the combination was ahead of the pack - four penalties, and under time. Another stallion out - and Cera Cassiago took centre stage, piloted by none other than jumping legend Chris Chugg. The striking grey looked good, but he too, took a rail to finish on a time of 86.74 and four penalties. It seemed that if Vicki and Chris were struggling, that we might not get a clear round! Riders with multiple horses also rode their first horse FIRST - the one on whom they thought they had the best chance of winning on. Perhaps the course was deceptively tricky?! Merrick Ubank and Alantinus were next up - the diesel mechanic no stranger to the FEI World Cup Qualifier at the Royal Melbourne Show. Apparently Merrick had been having a ripper of a week at the Show - winning everything in sight! He was victorious in this event in 2013 - alas, two fences down and 8 penalties looked like it could possibly put him out of contention.

64

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

Steven Hill and Yalambi Bellini’s Star were next. The pair flew around the course and all looked good - until they

2015 RASV ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW took down the last rail in a nail-biter! They finished on a time of 86.70 justone fourth of a second faster than Chris Chugg and his grey stallion. Jessica Stalling and Diamond B Vermont were next up - and it seemed like they just couldn’t quite get it together. A couple of rails down after a refusal saw them finish with 8 penalties, but not out of contention. There must have been something in the air, as James Lang and Sprite Knight didn’t have much luck either. A refusal at the first of the treble, and overtime, finishing on 21 penalty points. Rebecca Jenkins and RSB Jacana got around under time in 87.27 - but incurred penalties with a rail down on the second fence of the double, and one other rail, leaving them on 8 penalties. Samuel Buchanan and Diamond B Vixen looked incredibly fast, but again had rails down - another 8 penalty round in fact. Bryce Stones on Air, ridden by Rhys Stones was next on course. A refusal at the B element of the trebel cost them valuable seconds, and a shot at round two. Better luck next time! Next in was David Cameron and RR Dyranta - winner of this years’ (and last years, in fact!) Australian Showjumping Championship. The crowd had high hopes for the imported Warmblood mare and her rider, but alas - a rail down! They did have a cracking round though, and were the fastest of the field, with a time of 84.29. Impressive! Vicki was back in next on her second ride of the day; Bellhaven Jazz. Two rails and under time gave them 8 penalties. Were we ever to see a clear round? Stuart Jenkins and Fairview Animation were next to have a crack at the course

2015 RASV ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW - and they looked great - until it came a little unstuck at the butterfly and one rail fell. With only a few riders left to go, Chris Chugg made his second appreance, this time on Cristalline. A neat round, but one rail down. 4 penalties. James Arkins, seasoned jumper brought in his second ride, Rosthwaite Vigilante II. Eight penalties AGAIN. Not much was separating the field other than factions of seconds, and a division between four and eight penalties for the majority. Could Billy Raymont on the lovely Anton be our first clear? In a word, no. But they looked great on course and managed to take only one rail with them for 4 penalties and a time of 85.06. The field was completed with Brooke Campbell’s round on the stunning chestnut stallion, Copabella Cadiz. It wasn’t their day with rails falling at both doubles. 28 penalties saw them out of contention for the second round also. During a brief intermission it was decided that the top 25% of horses would fight it out in the jump off for top honours - so this was all horses with 8 penalties and under. As there were no clear rounds in the first round, we were very much looking forward to seeing some fast riding with poles remaining firmly in their cups! With quite a few riders to go on just four penalties, it was almost anybody’s. Add to that the expectation that round one would have been more of a cake walk than it was - which of our horse and rider combination would learn from their mistakes?!

72

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

Kicking off with Rebecca Jenkins and RSB Jacana, the jump off commenced. Time allowed was 60 seconds. The distance to cover was 375 metres. Rebecca was fast! 48.08, but incurred another 8 penalties to add to 8 from the first round.

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

73

2015 RASV ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW James Arkins was in next, again, 8 in the first round, and 8 in the second, for a total of 16. Diamond B Vermont and Jessica Stalling couldn’t quite put the pieces back together after a less than ideal first round, and suffered elimination after two refusals. Merrick Ubank and Alantinus came out with a very speedy round - and better yet - they went CLEAR! Finally we got one! A time of 48.03 had put the pair as the early leaders, carrying 8 penalties from round one. James Arkins’ second jump off round was almost a blur. Da Vinci’s Pride flashed around the course in just 45.03, shaving a whole three seconds off Merrick’s time.. but one rail fell, giving the pair a total of 12 penalties. Kiwi Lisa Coupe was in next and managed a clear round on Amaretto MVNZ in 48.57 seconds. Eight penalties from the first round placed them in second position. Brook Dobbin and Silvo had another crack, but knocked down three rails, and then five-time Australian Champion, Chuggy, came in and knocked a rail with Cera Cassiago, giving them 8 penalties to finish and a jump off time of 51.03. Steven Hill and Yalambi’s Bellini Star looked ready to rumble -carrying in only four penalties from round one, they continued a very good run with a clear second round in a very quick 45.10 seconds. We had a new leader but could he hold on with the top of the list still to come?! Cristelline and Chris Chugg (not to be outdone) gave us a brilliant clear round in the second, but Steven Hill had set a tough time, and this time, Chris was three seconds slower, slotting him into second spot. 2015 RASV ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW took a rail at the butterflies to add to their four penalties from the first. Billy Raymont and Anton were in third place going into the second round, but again, the butterflies tripped them up and they incurred 8 penalties in the second, although were quick around the course for a time of just 46.94. They finished on 12 penalties in total. Congo Z and Vicki also got stumped by the butterflies, adding four penalties to their first round score of four for 8 penalties total.

The clock was ticking away, as they were clear and suddenly approaching the very last fence - and they managed to leave EVERY pole standing... in a time of 46.71. The day belonged to Steven Hill and Yalambi’s Bellini Star after a stellar performance!

FINAL STANDINGS: 1st - Steven Hill/Yalambi’s Bellini Star 2nd - David Cameron/RR Dyranta 3rd - Chris Chugg/Cristelline

Just one horse and rider could knock Steven Hill and Yalambi’s Bellini Star off the podium - and it was all down to David Cameron and RR Dyranta - the reigning champs! He has to jump clear, and he had to be faster than 45.10 to clinch first place and a taste of victory! They started FAST! One rail would have put them further back in the field; it all came down to leaving the cups in the rails, and navigating the course at blinding speed - not an easy feat!

Using Smart Tails from Grosvenor Park Products anyone can transform a messy tail into a beautifully finished one ready for the show ring, in minutes.

Why use a Smart Tails thinning comb as opposed to traditional tail pulling? Firstly, and most importantly, Smart Tails is totally humane and causes no pain to the horse. If you have a young or sensitive animal, you can avoid putting it through the trauma of pulling and achieve an equally neat finish with this brilliant tool. Secondly, the process is far easier and quicker for the groom.

British showing supremo, Lynn Russell prefers Smart Tails to traditional pulling as she finds pulling irritates the hair follicles, causing the horse to itch.

Before you start

Step 1: Comb Through

Choose the Smart Tails (coarse, medium, fine or superfine) best suited to your horse’s hair type and the finish you desire. If your horse has a really thick tail you may wish get it under control with a coarse blade then finish with a fine blade, which is made possible by the interchangeable blade system.

Thoroughly brush the tail with a mane/tail brush to remove any knots. Don’t wash the tail – the comb grips better if the hair is greasy.

Step 2: Thin with Smart Tails

Feel to the end of the dock and aim to thin to about two thirds of the way down. Comb the Smart Tails down the sides of the tail, where you would normally pull. Keep the strokes as long as possible and treat both sides evenly. Leave the central top hairs long - the hair will lie better when bandaged and give the sleek, professional finish we all desire.

is ideal for removing the thick winter coat during shedding season. It is also effective on horses with Cushings disease and on long-haired dogs.

Step 3: Get the perfect length

minutes later!

Place a show cane under the tail (the horse naturally carries his tail when working) and cut about an inch below the hock - level with the chestnuts on the inside of the hind legs is a good guide. To ensure a straight cut you can trim the bottom of the tail with clippers rather than scissors.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Wash the tail with an everyday shampoo, spray the top with hairspray, water or a mix of both, and condition the bottom of the tail with a detangler. Apply a tail bandage (making sure you tie the tapes below the end of the dock) and leave on for at least an hour.

Step 5: Admire the result A tidy, pain-free tail! Remove the bandage and check you are happy with the result, tidying any stray hairs with the Smart Tails.

Grosvenor Park Products was established in 2009 to bring to Australia innovative equestrian products that were previously only available in Europe. The range grows from month to month, so for some ingenious inventions to make your daily horse management easier, visit www. grosvenorparkproducts.com.au.

To thin a mane with the Smart Manes, brush the mane over to the wrong side with a brush, so you are thinning from underneath. This will mean it is easier to plait the mane. Comb the Smart Manes through the hair evenly. You can make it level by brushing back on to the “right side and then backcombing and cutting with a Smart thinning knife, alternatively an old clipper blade will also do a good job of cutting and levelling a few long hairs. Once the mane is tidy, damp it down with a water brush and leave to settle. If the mane and crest is very thick don’t pull the mane too short otherwise it will just stick up. If the mane is long and very thin, its best to make it shorter using a thinning knife, so the thickness is not taken out.

HORSEMANSHIP >> HORSEMANSHIP

Mr Miles & Wet Saddle Blankets Recently I put a post on facebook that read ‘Never Underestimate the value of Mr Miles and Wet Saddle Blankets’, and I wanted to expand on that.

The number one trait that most people seek in a horse is ‘quietness’. But what we are really after is ‘experience’. We arent looking for a horse that is ‘quiet’ or ‘dull’, what we are after is a horse that is not going to shy, play up, get over excited and out of control. The only way that you can achieve this is experience, or as we like to say ‘Mr Miles’ – miles under saddle, hours in the saddle. ‘Wet saddle blankets’ this is wet from your horses sweat – wet from doing miles, or hours or whatever you want to call it. Yes, there are horses that are ‘quiet’, but quiet horses who are inexperienced can just as quickly turn into out of control horses that you cannot communicate with. For example. I take a horse out on a ride and she shies at something. If I want her to go forward, or sideways, or backwards – whatever it is that I am asking her to do – she has to have done it hundreds of times before – because once her blood is up, she is alot less capable of listening to me. If I want to avoid her shying at things in the future – I have to ride her lots, and lots and lots, so she gets confident in being ‘out and about’ and in new places – she gets to looking to me for the answers instead of getting into flight mode. The only way to do this is miles under saddle. This is exactly why when I send a horse home after he has

Ask Tanja...

been in training or started under saddle, I stress to the owner that the horse needs to be ridden – rain, hail or shine for a minimum of 30 days straight after he gets home – he leaves my place in ‘work mode’ he needs to stay in ‘work mode’ for at least a month after that. Then you can give him a day or some days off – but it is vital that he remains in some sort of a work program – once a week is not a program!! If you are after a horse to ride once a week – you need to buy something with age, and experience if your relationship is going to be a good one. To put it in human terms – there is a reason that when you are first learning to drive you must log a certain number of hours, or months before you can drive on your own – because you might be capable driving around the paddock or farm, but once their are external factors in place your reflexes and responses arent those of an experienced driver. You need experience behind the wheel and time to become a responsible driver – just as your horse needs experience and time to become a responsible mount.

Have you got a question you’d like to ask Tanja about your horse? Send your question to tanjajkraus@gmail.com with ‘Ask Tanja’ in the subject line - and check future issues of The Stable for Tanja’s responses!

THE ESCAP CHILDREN’ You've gotta love 'em, but man, can they drive you nuts! The thing about children’s ponies is just that - there are often children around them. Which is great, little people need little ponies. But it’s those little ponies who are often so full of character (for lack of a better word!) that can bring out the worst in us. It seems as though the smaller they are, the bigger they think they are, and the more trouble they get into. And with children around, swearing doesn’t seem quite like the most appropriate way to handle the situation. Children’s ponies seem to incite maximum frustration levels as they clearly enjoy mocking the hell out of adults. Most frustrating is when they know exactly what it is they’re supposed to do. Stand still for the farrier. Let themselves be caught. Suffer a bath with gentle good humour. Wait patiently for their evening feed. Stay within the boundaries of the paddock. No, fences are not to be viewed as a challenge! Is it possible that a pony could abide by the rules? Larger horses are more often comply - cause less of a fuss, and are less likely to cause unnecessary stress for their owners.

Yet when a small person takes the reins? A transformation occurs. Wild brat of a pony who would not be caught allows tiny little human to lead him around, will walk through puddles. Will follow said little person around all day quite placidly. Will tolerate endless mane pulling, plaiting, daisy chains, bareback riding, slaps on the flanks, ‘belly tickling’ and even dress ups without batting an eyelid. The same pony in the hands of an adult holding a worming paste tube instantly turns into the devil incarnate, won’t stand still, has no concept of manners or personal space, and chooses to bite and/ or kick equine health care professionals. Not to mention requiring special (expensive) dietary additives and the threat of a grazing muzzle to ensure that pony stays at a healthy weight and doesn’t turn into something that resembles a fluffy balloon on legs. And for what?
