Bart Cummings The Cup Legend Legendary trainer Bart Cummings passed away in late August aged 87, with his family by his side. Cummins’ horses won a record 12 Melbourne Cup races, the most recent of which was ‘Viewed’ in 2008. Warned by his doctor at age 16 to steer clear of horses due to an allergy of hay and the animals themselves, Bart began working as a strapper for his father before setting up his own stable in Glenelg at age 26. And the rest, they say, is history, Cummings earning accolades too numerous to count in a career spanning more than sixty years. In 1982 Cummings was awarded an Order of Austalian medal for his services to racing and was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2001.

T

he Netherlands claimed team gold ahead of Great Britain in silver and Germany in bronze at the FEI European Championships 2015 in Aachen, Germany today. It was a cliff-hanger of a competition, with the result decided by a superb performance from Edward Gal and Glock’s Undercover NOP. However Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro produced the biggest score of the day, posting 83.229 to finish more than half a percentage point ahead of the Dutchman.

16

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

The result has also decided the last three European qualifying spots for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and it is Spain, Sweden and France, who lined up fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, that have made the cut. The Spanish really pulled it out of the bag today, Morgan Barbancon Mestre putting in a poignant performance with Painted Black on the final event of the 18-year-old stallion’s career, while Beatriz Ferrer-Salat, silver medallist at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, boosted their chances when slotting into individual fifth spot with Delgado.

• The Netherlands claimed the FEI European Dressage Team Championship title today for the third time in the history of the event. • Great Britain took silver and the defending champions from Germany claimed the bronze. • All three medal-winning nations are already qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games so the teams placed fourth, fifth and sixth - Spain, Sweden and France - have earned the three available qualifying spots on offer at these Championships. • The highest score of the day today was produced by the British star partnership of Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro who posted a mark of 83.029. • Only two riders scored over 80 percent - Dujardin and Gal who earned a mark of 82.229 with Glock’s Undercover. • This was The Netherlands third FEI European Dressage Championships team title. They previously topped the podium at La Mandria, Spain in 2007 and again in 2009 in Windsor, Great Britain.

FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AACHEN

dressage

This was The Netherlands’ third time to take European team gold, and their first time to field an all-male side. They made history when breaking the German stranglehold on the title in 2007 and then did it again two years later, before the British broke the mold once again in 2011. Dutch Chef d’Equipe Wim Ernes said recently that he expected his side to take team bronze at these championships, so when asked this evening what he thought of that now, he replied “that was a few weeks ago, since then we just practiced and got better, and so today we won!”

Had the advantage Team Germany had the advantage as the competition resumed this morning, but when Hans Peter Minderhoud went to the top of the scoreboard with a mark of 77.856 with Glock’s Johnson that tipped the balance in The Netherlands’ favour. He was followed into the ring by Britain’s Carl Hester whose gelding, Nip Tuck, was a little unsettled through parts of his test. “But he’s so consistent, he’s never had under 70 percent” said the London 2012 Olympic Games team gold medallist after posting 75.400. Three horses later you could feel the electricity in the air as Germany’s Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas took their turn. They were expected to secure their country’s position at the top of the leaderboard, but their mark of 75.971 always looked vulnerable. The German rider said afterwards that “the piaffe could have been more active”, expressing surprise at his score. But only two horse-andrider combinations broke the 80 percent barrier today, and the first of those was ridden by Gal, the man who produced Totilas to become the first super-star horse of the sport of Dressage before the stallion’s sale to Germany in 2010.

Edward Gal & Glocks Undercover

Sensitivity

Asked how he produced such a confident test under extreme pressure today, Gal explained, “I think it’s the experience my horse has now, he’s done more big competitions, he did Las Vegas (Reem Acra FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final), and that was impressive for him. Here, when you are in the ring you don’t notice so much around you because there are so many judges houses that you can’t see out anyway!” he joked.

Gal has often struggled to contain Glock’s Undercover’s sensitivity and anxiety, but today the 14-year-old stallion showed exactly what his rider always said he could do. The judges clearly relished the utter consistency of the horse’s passage and piaffe, the steadiness of his tempi changes and the smoothness of the canter work when awarding the new leading mark of 82.229. That promoted the Dutch into an even stronger position, and although British stars Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro would better that by 0.8 percent, it was the Dutchman who took centre stage at the post-competition press conference having clinched it for his country. >

“But no” he continued, “for him it was quite a good atmosphere. The people are far away, and in the ring it was really quiet, it felt good and that gives him the confidence, and gives me the confidence that he is quiet and I can ride - and that makes an amazing test!” he explained. “I think we are the happiest team here!” Gal added, and Carl Hester responded, “I think that’s true - we have a great team too, but we’re not as happy as you!”

Charlotte Dujardin & Valegro The final Dutch score was 235.629 but it was a closefought affair with the British runners-up just 1.4 behind while the Germans were more than three points further adrift in bronze medal spot.

Happy mood Germany’s Isabell Werth was also in a happy and sporting mood even though that 23rd FEI European Dressage team title had slipped from her country’s grasp. “It was our goal to come first, but it’s boring to win all the time and much more exciting to come third and to have to start again next year!” she joked. “To be honest we tried our best, but in the end we missed some things...we were not as good as we can be, and I think the third place was right. Congratulations to the Dutch and the British - but be careful” she warned with a smile, “we want to come back, we will do our homework and next year we will do a better performance!” Next year is on everyone’s mind as today’s result has given all of the teams an indication of what they need to do if they want their Olympic dreams to come true. >

“I’m a little bit annoyed with myself. The zigzag, that was a bit my fault and it was still on my mind when I went into the changes and my two-times, double marks gone there...but the beginning of it felt really good. I don’t think there’s been many horses that have gone in there and not made mistakes, it was just unfortunate that it probably cost us the gold. At this top end you can’t afford to make any mistakes. But we all go in there to try out best and enjoy it, and that’s what we did.” - Charlotte Dujardin

efending champions, Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin and her much-loved superstar gelding Valegro, made it two-in-a-row when clinching Grand Prix Special gold at the FEI European Dressage Championships 2015 in Aachen (GER) this afternoon.

“I was a bit laid back and I was just going in there for a clear round, but because I made mistakes on Thursday I was like ‘right, that’s it, I’m sick of this’, and I wanted to go in there and better my performance. I know Valegro can do much better than that. I think the whole thing of last year coming here, it wasn’t really great for me and I worried about the heat for Valegro as well. But today he felt in great form and I thought, I’ve just got to ride it, and I did - I felt I just had a good ride from start to finish.” - Charlotte

On a day of huge tension, sizzling excitement and wonderful entertainment in the hallowed Soers arena, the 30-year-old rider managed to lay to rest the memory of her only significant defeat in the incredible career she has enjoyed with the horse she calls Blueberry. All three medals were hard-earned, and the recordbreaking British duo set yet another new FEI European Dressage Championships Grand Prix Special target score of 87.577, overtaking the 85.699 they set in Herning (DEN) two years ago. > The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AACHEN

the special There was plenty for the host nation to celebrate too when Kristina Bröring-Sprehe recovered from a much less impressive test in the team event to really show what she is made of to claim silver with Desperados FRH. The Netherlands’ Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Johnson TN took bronze, but it was bitter-sweet for the Dutchman, as his life-partner and team-mate, Edward Gal, who lifted The Netherlands to team gold on Thursday, was eliminated when last into the arena with Glock’s Undercover.

Chef d’Equipe, Monica Theordorescu, and the tears of joy were clearly visible in her eyes.

Set the standard

The German’s advantage didn’t last long however, as Dujardin, looking nervous but determined, strode down the centre line and set about the business of wowing the crowd with Valegro’s trademark piaffe, passage and extravagant extended trot. All of the Ground Jury had placed BröringSprehe in pole position a few minutes earlier, and they were in total agreement once again when coming up with a final mark of 87.577 for the British duo, who took over at the head of affairs despite a mistake at the end of the one-tempi changes.

Perhaps the bravest performance of the competition was produced by Denmark’s Anna Kasprzak who set the early standard when 12th into the arena with Donnperignon. The 25-year-old was kicked in the chest by her 16-year-old gelding after Tuesday’s horse inspection. “I was in the hospital, nothing was broken but I have a lot of pain”, she said after posting a good mark of 73.473 this afternoon. “In the team comp it was difficult, it hurts to breathe, but today I am really satisfied, we really did our best.” And she was still out in front when Germany’s Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH set the arena alight an hour later. The second session ended with a lovely ride from Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven, who raised the bar once again when posting 76.148 with the ever-elegant Don Auriello, but the medallists all came from the final group of 10 in which Carl Hester was first to surpass the Swedish rider’s target. His massive gelding, Nip Tuck, had turned intermittently shy on him during the team test, but today produced a much more confident performance. “He was brilliant”, he said afterwards. “For such a big horse, I have to be able to make quite a lot of adjustments to keep him balanced at the moment, but he absolutely did everything I asked, he let me help. I’m smiling from ear to ear.... he’s gone and nailed it for me today.”

Topped the leaderboard His score of 77.003 topped the leaderboard until BröringSprehe set off with Desperados FRH who produced one of the few flawless tests of the competition. Hopes had been pinned on the fabulous black stallion and his 28-year-old rider to retrieve the situation when things didn’t go Germany’s way in the team competition. It didn’t happen then, but the pair were completely in tune today, floating through extended trot and presenting a really attractive picture. When a massive 83.067 went up on the scoreboard the cameras swung to German

“They looked so beautiful together, and I’m so very proud”, Theodorescu said afterwards. “I train Kristina at home and she is such a nice and quiet person. I knew what a nice job they could do, and today they were so harmonious, it made me very happy!” the three-time Olympic team gold medallist said.

Spain’s Beatriz Ferrer-Salat has enjoyed a fantastic week, ensuring her country’s berth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with a brilliant performance in the team event. And once again today she produced a sparkling test from the 14-yearold gelding Delgado who posted 77.395 to temporarily take bronze medal spot. But the penultimate partnership of Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Johnson TN edged them out when scoring 79.034, and now only his Dutch counterpart, Gal, was left to challenge for gold.

Feeling Ill It had been an uneasy 24 hours in the Dutch camp leading up to today’s competition however, with team gold medallists Gal and Minderhoud both feeling ill. And Gal was clearly having problems with Glock’s Undercover, who was reluctant to even enter the arena to begin his test this afternoon. The Dutchman persevered, but the gelding was so over-excited he piaffed instead of doing his first halt, and the tense test was finally drawn to a premature close when the Judge at C, Andrew Gardner, rang the bell and stepped into the arena to tell Gal that he couldn’t continue because of blood in the horse’s mouth. Bronze medallist, Minderhoud, admitted afterwards that he was feeling weak during his test. “My legs felt a bit like spaghetti” he said, but although he was deeply disappointed for Gal, he was delighted to have picked up his very first individual European medal. Silver medallist, Bröring-Sprehe, said she enjoyed herself much more today. “It was easy to

dressage “Desperados was so fantastic, so good to ride today, he felt great in the atmosphere and we did our best Freestyle ever. Next year I hope”, she added, and then looked across at Dujardin and hesitated, “next year - I want to do even better!” - Kristina Bröring-Sprehe

ride”, she said. “On the first day there was a lot of pressure, but today Desperados was very concentrated and I had such a good feeling in passage and piaffe!”

A bit laid back... Gold medallist Dujardin talked about her determination going into the arena today. “On Thursday (team competition) I was a bit laid back and I was just going in there for a clear round, but because I made mistakes on Thursday I was like right, that’s it, I’m sick of this, and I wanted to go in there and better my performance. I know Valegro can do much better than that. I think the whole thing of last year coming here, it wasn’t really great for me and I worried about the heat for Valegro as well. But today he felt in great form and I thought, I’ve just got to ride it, and I did - I felt I just had a good ride from start to finish.” Her friend, trainer, fellow team-member and mentor, Hester, described his protégé’s success as “another great moment. I’m really happy for Charlotte and I want people to love the horse as we all love him, and it’s great to see him back at his best!” >

Isabell Werth’s popularity with her knowledgeable home crowd is second to none, but they gasped in disbelief when, instead of going into half-pass right, she asked Don Johnson FRH for walk and he obediently obliged. She corrected her mistake very quickly and then, demonstrating exactly why she has such a legion of fans who admire her sheer determination and consummate skill, the multi-medalled rider just carried on calmly with a big smile on her face. She laughed about it after putting a mark of 75.924 on the board.

“What happened? Maybe I’m too old or maybe I’m too blonde, you can choose whatever you want!” she said. “It was really stupid, but remember in Herning three of the medallists went the wrong way, and today I think maybe it was a bit of entertainment for the spectators!”

the freestyle It was double-gold for Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro when the British superstars added the Freestyle title to yesterday’s Grand Prix Special honours at the FEI European Dressage Championships in Aachen (GER) this evening. But today’s medal was particularly hard-won, with Germany’s Kristina Bröring-Sprehe only 0.25 percent off Dujardin’s winning score when taking silver with Desperados FRH, while Spain’s Beatriz Ferrer-Salat produced another sensation when claiming the bronze with Delgado. Continuing the week-long theme of expecting the unexpected, the day began with the news that Britain’s Fiona Bigwood was withdrawn because her mare, Atterupgaards Orthilia, had a “slight skin reaction causing sensitivity”. And then, just before the competition began, it was announced that Anna Kaskpkrzak had also pulled out. The Danish rider is no shrinking violet and had climbed into the saddle to prepare for her early-afternoon start with Donnperignon. But the pain she has been suffering since she was kicked in the chest by her horse after the horse inspection six days ago was just too intense today.

Strong test Newly-crowned European team champion, Patrick van der Meer from the The Netherlands, got the competition underway with a nice test from Uzzo who set the standard at 74.375, and this was followed by the farewell performance of Morgan Barbancon Mestre’s 18-year-old stallion Painted Black who posted 73.375. However it was Karen Tebar from France who led the way into the first competition break. It is rare to see a rider smiling as they enter the arena, especially one as intimidating as the Soers in Aachen, but the 50-year-old who fits her competitive career around managing her own German-based company, looked equally as happy as her 10-year-old gelding Don Luis who, in his first year at international level, took over the lead with a score of 74.964. The target rocketed up to 80.214 when German team bronze medallist, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, took her turn with Unee BB, their performance concluding with a dare-devil extended trot up the centre-line. And then Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson Silfven went out in front, the six-time Olympian and her 13-year-old gelding demonstrating their unique partnership based on a mutual understanding that allows them to ebb and flow with the rhythm of their test for a mark of 80.643.

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

A day to savour This was a day to savour, with many young horses suggesting great future potential, including the nine-year-old Batuta ridden by Portugal’s Goncalo Carvalho (72.768) and Carl Hester’s 10-year-old Nip Tuck (79.571) for Great Britain. But it was the 82.482 produced by Germany’s Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH that was the score to beat as the final four took their turn. Werth is both a natural-born entertainer as well as an edgeof-the-seat competitor, and she had the home crowd right behind her as she swung her way through her musical score that included a newly-introduced excerpt from Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” - the late, great Freddie Mercury singing “nothing really matters” - but of course it did. And the crowd went wild when the judges awarded 82.482. Still the excitement was far from over. Only a chosen few knew that Beatriz Ferrer-Salat would shine this week. First, like Frenchwoman Tebar, she would steer her country into an Olympic qualifying spot and then go on to finish just off the podium in yesterday’s Grand Prix Special. As she started into her routine it was clear the Spanish rider was upping her game even further, her chestnut gelding Delgado presenting a beautifully balanced, forward-going picture as they cruised through seamless transitions and presented a picture of lightness and harmony for a new leading score of 82.714. Quite an achievement for a horse that has struggled with unsoundness since he was a six-year-old and who, at 14 years of age, is only now getting the opportunity to show his true ability.

Close to perfection But while that was lovely to watch, the penultimate performance of Bröring-Sprehe and her fabulous black stallion was close to perfection. The 28-year-old rider came to Aachen this week with a weight of expectation on her shoulders, and although she didn’t get the result she wanted in the team competition she was very impressive when taking silver in yesterday’s Grand Prix Special. This day however the horse-and-rider combination were in a different league altogether, lighting up the ring with spectacular passage and piaffe, the tiniest of pirouettes and breath-taking extended trot. The defending champions were chasing a big score of 88.804 as they set off, and it was difficult to know if they would beat that score.

dressage

Dujardin found the one-tempi changes something of a bug-bear this week and once again they let the pair down this afternoon, but even though her 13-year-old gelding was much less animated than in yesterday’s test, the quality of their work was such that they overtook their German rivals by a narrow 0.25 percent to round up their week with both of the individual titles.

Only the ones Talking afterwards, the record-breaking rider said, “it was only the ones (one-tempi changes) that let the performance down. I think he’s got a thing with them now, he’s done it all week. Yesterday in the last one he made a mistake, outside he’s been really good with them. It’s only one movement at the end of the day and it has cost me, but I was really happy with the rest of it. Ferrer-Salat said of her bronze medal finish today, “when we came here I was expecting to qualify the team for Rio and I hoped to get into the Kur, but a medal? Never! I’m very happy for my horse, I’ve had him for years and he’s always been injured, but now we have rehabilitated him. It has taken a long, long time, but it’s been worth it!” >

Championships were tough Dujardin admitted these Championships were tough. “Yeah, I knew it would be coming here. But in the end I’m going home with two golds and a silver medal, so I’m happy!” she replied. Asked about the narrow margin between herself and Bröring-Sprehe she said, “that’s sport and it makes it more and more exciting...it would be really boring if I was winning by miles all the time. So the fact that Kristina is catching me up everyone, even Edward in the Grand Prix - I think for me here I just had mistakes in my tests. I haven’t had one test which I haven’t had mistakes in, and that’s obviously expensive, but I know when I have a mistake-free test it’s a very good test. He’s (Valegro) going to have a holiday now for three weeks and I’ll work on it and hopefully get my changes back and go to Olympia...get ready for Rio. I’m not giving up easily!” she concluded.

Jumping continued at its relentless pace when reigning world champion,

Jeroen Dubbeldam, steered the brilliant SFN Zenith to victory in the individual final at the FEI European Jumping Championships 2015 in Aachen. Silver went to Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet with Conrad de Hus while Simon Delestre and Ryan des Hayettes from France claimed the bronze in a two-round competition that kept spectators in the packed Soers Arena on the edges of their seats.

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

Dubbeldam now has the big three in the bag - Olympic individual gold claimed at Sydney 2000, the world championship title he took at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Normandy (FR) last year and now the individual European title which has not been won by The Netherlands since Johan Heins stood top of the podium in Vienna (AUT) back in 1977. And he has achieved each of the last two victories after already contributing to team gold with the same brilliant gelding.

FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AACHEN

The final began without Ukraine’s Cassio Rivetti whose horse, Vivant, did not pass yesterday’s second horse inspection. That saw Dubbeldam move up from third to silver medal spot, and he was only just over one penalty-point behind the leading partnership of Spain’s Sergio Alvarez Moya and Carlo as the first round began this afternoon. Wathelet also put himself in the picture when doing likewise with Conrad de Hus, but the host nation’s hopes were shaken again when, lying sixth, Ludger Beerbaum’s mare, Chiara, put a foot in the open water in an otherwise clean tour of the course. A mistake at the second fence blotted Dutchman Jur Vrieling’s copybook, the bogey triple combination penalised Peneleope Leprevost from France and two fences down saw Switzerland’s Romain Duguet disappear from the reckoning, so the leaderboard kept changing rapidly. There would be no mistakes from Dubbeldam and Zenith however, and when overnight leaders, Alvarez Moya and Carlo, left the first element of the triple combination on the ground, the Dutchman was already in the driving seat going into the second round with less than a fence in hand over Wathelet in second, with Alvarez Moya in third, Delestre in fourth and Schou in fifth place. The new 10-fence course was less complicated, and eight of

30

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

the 22 remaining combinations completed on a zero score this time out. Schou’s medal hopes disintegrated with a single error however, but Delestre was ultra-careful with his 10-yearold gelding and, bringing him home with a just a single time-fault on the board, he was suddenly in a threatening position. So when Alvarez Moya left a pole on the ground the Frenchman already had bronze in his grasp. Second-placed Wathelet held his nerve to pile the pressure on Dubbeldam with a foot-perfect run, but the Dutchman never looked like flinching. His horse was reluctant to come into the ring today, unsettled by the noise and atmosphere during the week, but once the fences were in front of him he just got on with the job he does so well, and as the Dutch pair galloped through the finish there was a single time penalty on the board but it made no difference to the final result. A roar of approval from the knowledgeable Aachen crowd accompanied the victory-gallop of the most exceptional horse-and-rider combination in the modern sport. “You can only dream that it comes true, there is no wisdom for it” said the newly-crowned Rolex European Jumping champion this evening. Dubbeldam admitted that he was very aware of the high expectations for himself and his horse coming into this event. “When you come here to Aachen, one of the most difficult places for a championship and one of the

showjumping nicest, you know it’s going to be a top battle. So many good riders and so many good horses. And you also need to be a little bit lucky. Everything has to be good, you have to be fit, your horse has to be fit, and then you can focus on everything, but in the end you need some luck. I had the luck on my side, and today it is a dream come true.” Wathelet said: “I prepared to bring my horse here as best I can and he improved a lot. In the last two months he’s been jumping better and better and he went particularly well in Dinard (France) so I had a good feeling coming here - but I never expected a medal! Then I was eighth before the final today and I thought that if I could go double-clear then I might just get a medal. My horse really fought for me this week.”

“I was in 14th place, it was really big stuff and I wasn’t expecting anything big!” Delestre said. “But when I was double-clear then I finished in the top three. I’m really happy with my horse and to have three French riders finishing in the top 10 was just fantastic!” the bronze medallist said. The crowning of the Jumping champion Jeroen Dubbeldam was the final sporting moment in Aachen today, but it was FEI President, Ingmar de Vos, who had the final words to bring the super-exciting FEI European Championships Aachen 2015 to a close this evening.

“With 117 years’ experience of presenting equestrian sport, Aachen is no stranger to events of the scale of the FEI European Championships”, he said. “In this equestrian heartland, our athletes – equine and human – have been given a five-star welcome with the great professionalism that they are known for. Over the past 12 days, Aachen has once again shown its amazing ability to organise a multidiscipline event and make it look so easy. “Thirty nations competed in Aachen and battled it out for 13 gold medals and to qualify for the next Olympic Games in Rio. My sincere thanks go to Carl Meulenbergh and his employees, my dear friend Frank Kemperman and the City of Aachen, the organisers and the host of these important European Championships. You have written a further glamourous chapter in the history of equestrian sport.”

Testimonials Equiheal products are used and recommended by equine veterinarians, farriers & leading trainers. “I have used Equiheal Stable Ointment for treating horses with a variety of skin and hoof disorders. I have found it to be a very effective product, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone thinking of using it for any of the following skin or hoof disorders. Greasy Heel, Non-specific Dermatitis, Thrush, Seedy Toe, Open Hoof Abscess, Hoof Soreness, Cuts and Abrasions.”

Toby Ryan, BSC BVMS - Equine Veterinarian Surgeon “We at Griffiths Racing have been using Equiheal products for several months. Not only have we successfully treated Greasy Heel but have used it as a general stable treatment for most other ailments including wither sores, skin conditions and other abrasions. Recently we have been using the Hoof & Sole product which has also had positive results. This year has seen an increase in hoof related conditions due largely to the wet conditions Victorians are experiencing. I have used both products and they have greatly minimized the amount of hoof and sole issues we were getting prior to introducing the product. I can highly recommend it to all the equine industry.”

Robbie Griffiths Racing Stables, Victoria Equestrian enthusiast Angela Woodacre had an ongoing problem with her horse Banjo, and had tried many products without success until her farrier suggested trying Equiheal Stable Ointment. This is what she had to say after her horse could not hold a shoe on for the past seven years due to soft soles and walls in all four of her horses hooves. “I applied Equiheal Stable Ointment daily into the souls and walls, combined with an oral hoof supplement. Banjo has been shod on a regular basis for the past six months without the loss of a shoe. I’m very happy and relieved by the outcome, and I would highly recommend Equiheal Stable Ointment.”

Angela Woodacre, Toodyay WA

Anthony Adams, Broken Hill NSW “I had a horse that was suffering from soft and thin sole. A trainer of forty years said it was the worst soft sole he had ever seen. On recommendation from another trainer, I tried Equiheal Stable Ointment. I packed the frog and sole with Equiheal Ointment and then placed a hoof boot over it for sixteen hours daily. After four days he was walking freely, and after seven days he was able to start track working. My stable rider was so amazed that she now calls it the magic ointment.”

It’s GOLD for team ITALY!

WORDS: Simona Diale. PHOTOS: FEI/Dirk Caremans Italy claimed team gold ahead of Germany in silver and The Netherlands in bronze at the FEI European Reining Championships 2015 in Aachen, Germany. In a field of 40 competitors, and with 8 horse-rider combinations to go, the podium was determined by a superb performance from Italy’s Giovanni Masi De Vargas and Dance Little Spook.

Madaus, thrilled the crowd executing the only +1 ½ spins of the day. Once the duo closed their performance, they secured Germany’s European team silver. “I am simply thrilled,” said Italian team coach, Filippo Masi De Vargas. “This squad is made up of young riders, the future of our discipline, and they were just great, very professional and full of enthusiasm. The only ‘older’ rider is Pierluigi Fabbri, who was also on the team in the past edition. He had to endure the pressure of opening the competition today and did a great job giving the other athletes on the team the confidence they needed.” In the 2013 edition of the Championships, Italy took team silver behind Germany and today, again on German soil, the battle was on from the first to the last competitor. With only 10 horse-rider combinations left to go, vying for the medals were Italy with 651 points, The Netherlands with 637 and France with 634.5. The situation was soon to change following Masi De Vargas’s performance, which did put Italy in the lead but still left the highest step of the podium undecided. The gold and silver medals were determined after Ludwig’s run, but reining enthusiasts had to wait until the last competitor of the day to find out which nation would complete the podium. Rieky Young Van Osch of The Netherlands, who performed aboard her Brady Chex, the 10-year-old stallion by Buenonic Chex and out of Somethingtocrowabout, ending up posting a 214, enough to earn the bronze. Just off the podium was team Great Britain with three competitors and a total of 635 points. Francesca Sternberg and Ten Reasons (Hand Ten Suprize x Hotroddin Catalyst) closed with a 215.5, enough to advance automatically to the individual competition on Sunday. “Ten Reasons just gave me another reason why my husband Doug chose him!” said an enthused Francesca following her run.

Aboard the 7-year-old Quarter Horse mare by Smart Spook and out of Sailors Dance, owned by Quarter Dream, the young Italian rider posted a 221.5. Equaling the top score of the day was Germany’s Grisha Ludwig and Shine My Gun. The 7-year-old stallion, an own son of Colonels Smoking Gun and out of Shiners Mistress, owned by Stephanie

Dance Little Spook and Masi de Vargas claim gold in Aachen Excitement and great reining were the key words at the FEI European Reining Championships in Aachen. Twenty of Europe’s finest horses and riders performed in the Deutsche Bank Stadium with Giovanni Masi de Vargas of Italy clinching individual gold with Quarter Dream’s Dance Little Spook between the reins.

reining Dutch dressage champion, Anky van Grunsven, who holds the record for the most Olympic medals won by any equestrian athlete, and is the only rider to record three successive Olympic wins in the same event, was on Team Netherlands riding her own Whizashinningwalla BB. This is her first reining medal in an FEI event. “It’s amazing, so much fun and I’m so excited about it,” said Anky. “I know I can Last to enter the arena, the 22-year-old flawlessly guided the talented seven-year-old mare, by Smart Spook out of Sailors Dance, through pattern number nine. His deep stops, fast spins, smooth lead changes and perfectly painted circles pleased both the crowd and the judges who paid him back with an outstanding score of 222 and the top step of the podium. “Earning two gold medals here is unbelievable and so emotional,” said Masi de Vargas, who also posted the highest score in the team competition on Friday when Italy took home the gold. “I cannot thank my team enough, our coach and the president of the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE), Cav. Vittorio Orlandi, for being here to cheer for us.” The pressure was on for Masi de Vargas once it was his turn to enter the arena. German veteran Grischa Ludwig and the eight-year-old stallion Shine My Gun (Colonels Smoking Gun x Shiners Mistress), owned by Stephanie Maudas, had thrilled the crowd with their run and their perfect spins. Once they had performed their last stop, a 221 appeared on the scoreboard, meaning the duo just missed out and had to settle for individual silver on home soil. “I came here aiming for the gold,” Ludwig said. “I did not have much luck in my last stop but it was a great fight until the very end and I am proud of our results.”

do dressage but to be on a bronze medal winning reining team that’s something else. Earning a medal at the FEI European Championships is so good for this sport and the reason that I enjoy this discipline is firstly because I’m not good at it and I like the challenge, and secondly, I love the atmosphere both in and outside the arena.”

Following the last drag, expectation and high class reining kept the public glued to their seats and the final tussle between Masi de Vargas and Ludwig couldn’t have been a better advertisement for the sport. There was no better way to close the 2015 edition of the FEI European Reining Championships in Aachen! >

SWITZERLAND’S JÄISER TAKES FEMALE TITLE, GERMANY WINS SQUAD WORDS: Louise Parkes. PHOTOS: FEI/© im|press|ions – Pascal Duran/Daniel Kaiser Switzerland’s Simone Jäiser held on to the lead she established in yesterday’s technical test to scoop gold at the FEI European Vaulting Championships 2015. The 28-year-old, who was individual bronze medalist at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy (FRA), showed great body control and strength in today’s Final freestyle, and couldn’t be overtaken despite a brilliant performance from Germany’s Corinna Knauf who had to settle for silver, while Austria’s Lisa Wild took the bronze. The atmosphere in Aachen’s Deutsche Bank Arena was at an all-time high, with Vaulting fans getting together on Facebook prior to the event to coordinate their colours. Spectators in the north stand wore black, while those in the east wore red and in the west stand they wore yellow to represent the host nation flag. And it proved well worthwhile when, in a competition filled with dramatic errors but courageous recoveries, Team RSV Neuss-Grimlinghausen took gold for Germany in the hard-fought squad final.

Female final Jäiser went way out in front in today’s competition, scoring 8.668 for a performance that oozed comfort, confidence and class when 12th to go of the 15 starters. But the 22-year-old German, Corinna Knauf, followed with a routine that placed her first in this fourth and final test. With no mistakes, and movements so smoothly blended, she posted 8.747, which was the best of the day. However, all athletes carried their scores from Thursday’s opening compulsory competition, Friday’s first freestyle and yesterday’s technical test into today’s deciding freestyle, so Knauf’s final tally of 8.280 slotted her in behind her Swiss rival. Second-last to go, and lying fourth going into this final afternoon, Germany’s Christine Kuhirt made an elegant start to her jazz-themed performance, but struggling with an early off-floor movement and late with her dismount, her score of 8.103 would only be good enough for fifth on the day and left her just off the podium. Now it was all down to Austria’s Lisa Wild who was last to go.

Creating A Sensation The 20-year-old became known as “the backflip queen” after creating a sensation with the dare-devil movement at the FEI World Vaulting Championships in Le Mans, France, three years ago, and was considered a strong contender for the 2015 European title after her victory at the FEI World Cup™ Vaulting Final in February of this year. She is always a big hit with spectators everywhere she goes and, as she entered the arena today with her lunger Nina Rossin and horse Robin,

she knew she was still in with a chance of taking the title if she was prepared to take the risk. She had moved into third with a strong technical test yesterday and was working her way through an impressive routine today until she finally attempted the back-flip exercise, but it didn’t come off. Without enough height she crumpled when landing on Robin’s back, but the crowd appreciated her courage in attempting the movement that would have earned her extra marks for the high degree of difficulty, and the judges rewarded her with 8.452, which brought her closing total to 8.207 and was good enough for the bronze. Newly-crowned champion Jäiser was thrilled with her result. “I can’t believe that now I am the European champion. It’s a big dream, I hoped it, but I never believed it would happen - it’s fantastic.” >

Individual Female: Gold - Simone Jäiser (SUI) 8.321; Silver - Corinna Knauf (GER) 8.280; Bronze - Lisa Wild (AUT) 8.207. Squad Final: Gold - Team RSV NeussGrimlinghausen (GER) 8.597; Silver - Team Lütisburg (SUI) 8.104; Bronze - Team Ecurie de la Cigogne (FRA) 8.062.

“My performance was good, there were no mistakes, or only a little one that I could make it so that the audience couldn’t see it very well! So I’m very happy!”, she said.

Squad finale It was an even more nail-biting finish in the squad, with nerves and pressure affecting some of the strongest sides, while others really rose to the challenge. Team Ecurie de la Cigogne went out in front for France, with their flier, Christopher Robin Krause, and their fabulous horse Watriano R reinforcing a tremendously solid team effort that was filled with grace and elegance, ensuring it was a

pleasure to watch. The strength of the three-tier movements was particularly impressive, with Krause holding position and presenting the picture of lightness and athleticism. When their score of 8.877 went up on the board, the 14-year-old and his older squad-mates Christelle Haenell, Cleone Fritsch, Clement Taillez, Remy Homberq and Anthony Presle put it right up to the remaining three teams. And one by one, they all felt the pressure. Austria’s Team Wildegg had three fall errors including two in a triple stance, but they made a strong recovery to post 7.669 considering the extent of their drama. And then the reigning world champions from Germany, Team RSV NeussGrimlinghausen, ran into trouble with two dismount falls and

another in a triple movement. However, such was the complexity of their programme, that high horse scores and artistic marks earned 8.863 and brought their final scoreline to 8.597. So Pauline Riedl, Julia Dammer, Jannika Derks, Leonie Falkenberg, Mona Pavetic and Johannes Kay could now only be denied the top step of the podium if Switzerland’s Team Lütisburg could produce something very special indeed when last to go. But they were in trouble from the outset with a fall in their very first movement, and another later in their programme. Although Nadja and Martina Buttiker, Ramona Naf, Nathalie Bienz, Raffaela di Maria, and Kyla Seiler finished strongly, their final overall score of 8.104 left them over 4.5 points behind the German champions, but only 0.42 ahead of the bronze medalists from France.

ROY ROGERS’ AUCTION @ THE HORSES WENT CHRISTIES EVEN UNDER THE HAMMER... Legendary horseman Roy Roger’s tack, saddlery - and even stuffed and mounted horses went under the hammer at an auction held by noted house Christies recently. The dispersal of the Roy Rogers - Dale Evans museum offered more than 300 items from the collection to the public, with more than $2.9million raised from the sale to go to recoup the costs of the museum after it closed it’s doors last December. Items of tack and saddlery were sold along with many of the horses - who, following their deaths, were stuffed and mounted. Trigger himself fetched US $266, 500, while Buttermilk fetched $25,000.

Aachen I

ngrid Klimke’s brilliant season continued with an outstanding performance at Aachen (GER), where she led the home team to a convincing victory in the fifth leg of the 2015 FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing and finished first and second on the individual leaderboard with FRH Escada JS and her team horse, Horseware Hale Bob. Although she has competed every year at Aachen since 2005, Klimke has never won the prestigious Eventing competition before, promising: “I want to read my name on the winner’s board one day”, and she made good that promise in real style today. The New Zealanders, competing in their first FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing this year, finished a close second with three superb jumping performances. The USA, also making their first appearance this season, were third thanks to great Cross Country rounds from Phillip Dutton (Fernhill Cubalawn) and Lauren Kieffer (Veronica). After Dressage, Germany held an eight-point lead over Britain, who were boosted by the brilliant score of 34.3 produced by the 2014 Young Rider European silver medallists, Holly Woodhead and DHI Lupison. The Kiwis lay third, but rose to second place within three penalties of the German team after Jumping, when Tim Price (Wesko), his wife Jonelle (Faerie Dianimo) and Sir Mark Todd (NZB Campino) all went clear, whereas Klimke was the only member of the German team to remain fault free over the coloured poles.

FEI NEWS

EVENTING@

Aachen

Woodhead (GBR) also went clear to rise to second place individually behind Klimke, while Woodhead’s team mate Gemma Tattersall (Quicklook V) incurred just one time penalty to keep Britain in a close third at that stage.

Only a handful of riders achieved the optimum time: three were German team members - Klimke, world champion Sandra Auffarth (Opgun Louvo) and Dirk Schrade (Hop and Skip) – and one was a Kiwi, Tim Price.

But the British team was eliminated when Flora Harris and Bayano retired on the Cross Country and, after the examination of video footage, Woodhead was discovered to have jumped the wrong side of a flag at the corner in the water. Despite its last-place finish at Aachen, Britain – the only country to have contested all five legs of the series so far – still has a commanding lead over Germany in the FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing leaderboard.

There were also notably fast rounds from New Zealanders Jonelle Price and Mark Todd, Germany’s Michael Jung (Halunke FBW), Australia’s Paul Tapner (Indian Mill), Canada’s Rebecca Howard (Riddle Master) and Ireland’s Padraig McCarthy (Simon Porloe).

The Cross Country was run in reverse order of merit and built to a crescendo as the crowds watching the finish in the main arena became more and more excited. Rudiger Schwarz’s Cross Country track provided an exhilarating – and exacting – contest as the time of six minutes 40 seconds was tight and the demanding lines caught out a number of riders. Fence 16b, a brush fence that had to be jumped on the angle following a corner, caused the most problems and Andrew Hoy (AUS), who produced a brilliant performance out of Cheeky Calimbo to put the three-man Australian team into fifth place, wisely took the long route here. New Zealand team member Jock Paget was unseated after Clifton Lush ran out here, and Britain’s Flora Harris (Bayano), the USA’s Colleen Routledge (Covert Rights), Canada’s Kathryn Robinson (Let It Bee) and the Netherlands’ Tim Lips (Concrex Bayro) all faulted here, as did Holly Woodhead when DHI Lupison over-jumped the preceding element. Louise Svensson Jahde (SWE) suffered the only horse fall when Wieloch’s Utah Son hit the table fence after the water at fence 9. Vets treated the horse for a cut on its chest, which required stitching. The rider was unhurt in the fall.

52

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

This was a fiercely competitive and thrilling FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing contest, but the result left no one in any doubt as to who the favourites will be for the Longines FEI European Championships at Blair Castle (GBR) next month.

g n i m o o r g Five steps to a PERFECT TAIL -

the humane way!

Using Smart Tails from Grosvenor Park Products anyone can transform a messy tail into a beautifully finished one ready for the show ring, in minutes.

Why use a Smart Tails thinning comb as opposed to traditional tail pulling? Firstly, and most importantly, Smart Tails is totally humane and causes no pain to the horse. If you have a young or sensitive animal, you can avoid putting it through the trauma of pulling and achieve an equally neat finish with this brilliant tool. Secondly, the process is far easier and quicker for the groom.

British showing supremo, Lynn Russell prefers Smart Tails to traditional pulling as she finds pulling irritates the hair follicles, causing the horse to itch.

Before you start

Step 1: Comb Through

Choose the Smart Tails (coarse, medium, fine or superfine) best suited to your horse’s hair type and the finish you desire. If your horse has a really thick tail you may wish get it under control with a coarse blade then finish with a fine blade, which is made possible by the interchangeable blade system.

Thoroughly brush the tail with a mane/tail brush to remove any knots. Don’t wash the tail – the comb grips better if the hair is greasy.

Step 2: Thin with Smart Tails

Feel to the end of the dock and aim to thin to about two thirds of the way down. Comb the Smart Tails down the sides of the tail, where you would normally pull. Keep the strokes as long as possible and treat both sides evenly. Leave the central top hairs long - the hair will lie better when bandaged and give the sleek, professional finish we all desire.

68

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

Before.... and 10 m You will need to have a few other items handy: a mane/tail brush, hair spray (or water), shampoo, detangler and a tail bandage.

is ideal for removing the thick winter coat during shedding season. It is also effective on horses with Cushings disease and on long-haired dogs.

Step 3: Get the perfect length

minutes later!

Place a show cane under the tail (the horse naturally carries his tail when working) and cut about an inch below the hock - level with the chestnuts on the inside of the hind legs is a good guide. To ensure a straight cut you can trim the bottom of the tail with clippers rather than scissors.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Wash the tail with an everyday shampoo, spray the top with hairspray, water or a mix of both, and condition the bottom of the tail with a detangler. Apply a tail bandage (making sure you tie the tapes below the end of the dock) and leave on for at least an hour.

Step 5: Admire the result A tidy, pain-free tail! Remove the bandage and check you are happy with the result, tidying any stray hairs with the Smart Tails.

Grosvenor Park Products was established in 2009 to bring to Australia innovative equestrian products that were previously only available in Europe. The range grows from month to month, so for some ingenious inventions to make your daily horse management easier, visit www.grosvenorparkproducts.com.au.

To thin a mane with the Smart Manes, brush the mane over to the wrong side with a brush, so you are thinning from underneath. This will mean it is easier to plait the mane. Comb the Smart Manes through the hair evenly. You can make it level by brushing back on to the “right side and then backcombing and cutting with a Smart thinning knife, alternatively an old clipper blade will also do a good job of cutting and levelling a few long hairs. Once the mane is tidy, damp it down with a water brush and leave to settle. If the mane and crest is very thick don’t pull the mane too short otherwise it will just stick up. If the mane is long and very thin, its best to make it shorter using a thinning knife, so the thickness is not taken out.

HORSEHEALTH

COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS IN

Senior horses H

aving regular health routines in place is the best way to keep your senior horse in top shape. Ensure that your horse receives regular veterinary check ups, regular dentist appointments, a routine worming program, vaccinations, regular hoof trims, and that you provide him with a diet that he is able to chew and digest easily.

Unfortunately, as with all living creatures, degeneration in health is common in older horses. Even with the best of care, problems can arise, and there are many problems that the older horse is more susceptible to than younger horses are.

THE OLDER BODY: NOT AS TOUGH AS IT ONCE WAS When horses reach ‘old age’ the care that they have received throughout their lives impacts on how well the horse is able to function. Damage to the horse’s intestines caused by parasites (worms) is cumulative, and so regular infestations as a young horse may have permanently damaged the horse’s bowels. This means that the horse may have more difficulty in digesting his feed and extracting nutrients than a horse who has never suffered with a severe worm infestation. The older body is generally less able to function as well as it once did. It may not be able to absorb vitamins as efficiently as when the horse was young, and the horse’s body may not be able to manufacture vitamins as effectively as it used to. Horses bodies actually manufacture their own Vitamin C and Vitamin B, both of which are essential for maintaining optimum health. Young horses manufacture

70

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

these vitamins in abundant levels, however the older horse may need supplementation of these minerals, and others, if his digestive capabilities are significantly reduced.

KIDNEY AND LIVER FUNCTION

In older horses, liver and kidney function is often reduced. The organs in the body degenerate as a part of the natural aging process and don’t always function as well as they used to. This can cause a range of symptoms and health issues, including loss of appetite, weight loss, lethargy, jaundice, and imbalances of minerals in the blood stream. In cases of liver failure, horses may be extremely irritable and can exhibit signs of ‘head pressing’, where they will actually press their heads against walls and other objects. In some horses, although organ efficiency is decreased it can be managed. As with many equine health problems, there are degrees of severity. If you do suspect that your older equine has a problem with his organs, you should have him seen as soon as possible by your veterinarian.

ARTHRITIS / DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE Stiffness or lameness in older horses due to arthritis is very common in varying degrees of severity. Arthritis begins when the joint cartilage breaks down. There are no nerves and no blood supply in the cartilage, but it does act as a buffer between connecting bones. Joint fluid acts as a lubricant to keep joints moving freely - and in the case of degenerative joint disease, the membrane that regulates the joint fluid becomes inflamed. In turn, the fluid no longer assists the fluidity of the joints, and further damage is done to the cartilage itself. Once the condition begins and the joint is damaged, it cannot be repaired.

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

71

HORSEHEALTH

COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS IN

Senior horses

Treatment for arthritis is focused on pain management, helping to boost the joint fluid, keeping the cartilage healthy, and reducing any inflammation of the joints. Your vet will be able to examine your horse and determine the severity of the degeneration and an appropriate treatment plan.

THYROID DYSFUNCTION Thyroid problems can occur in horses, and can cause a range of symptoms. The thyroid gland is located in the horse’s neck, and tumours can interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. Tumours can be managed, but may have to be removed if they are too large, and interfere with other surrounding tissues, organs and body systems that are located close by, such as the throat - trachea, nervous system, carotid artery or jugular vein. SYMPTOMS OF AN OVER ACTIVE THYROID INCLUDE: * Increased water intake * Restlessness * Weight Loss * Irregularities in the heartbeat SYMPTOMS OF A THYROID THAT IS NOT FUNCTIONING WELL ENOUGH INCLUDE: * Hair loss * Weight gain * Fatigue * Infertility * Intolerance to cold conditions

72

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

As with any other conditions, you should always seek the advice of your vet, and arrange an examination as soon as possible.

PITUITARY DYSFUNCTION The pituitary gland is responsible for regulating hormones for growth and reproduction in the horses body. The gland itself is situated at the base of the brain. In older horses, benign tumours can interfere with the function of the pituitary gland. Symptoms of pituitary dysfunction include chronic laminitis, increased water intake and urination, and the growth (and failure to shed) of a thick, woolly and sometimes curly winter coat.

EQUINE CUSHINGS SYNDROME

Cushings Syndrome is a condition where the horse’s body cannot regulate the levels of cortisol in it’s bloodstream due to the prescence of a tumour in the pituitary gland. (Cortisol is actually produced in the adrenal gland, which is regulated by the pituitary gland.) Horses with Cushings display similar symptoms to horses suffering from pituitary dysfunction, and often lose topline condition, yet appear pot bellied. If Cushings syndrome is suspected, a veterinarian will be able to correctly diagnose the horse, and will help to implement a course of treatment. The horse’s quality of life can be greatly improved by managing the condition, however the tumour may continue to grow, and euthanasia may have to be considered.

Managing horses on High Fructan Pastures Grass…sweet, fresh, appetizing…it seems like the perfect food for equines. Indeed, it’s hard to find a horse, even a picky eater, that won’t dig right in when given access to pasture. So how can this readily available, appealing, natural forage be dangerous for some horses and ponies? A closer look provides an answer: it’s not the grass itself, but the amount of a specific type of sugar within the plants, that’s the problem.

So, when is the best time to graze horses in order to avoid fructans? The answer to this complicated question is, “It depends.” Fructans are specially adapted sugars that are found in coolseason forages. These sugars derive their unique properties from the bonds that hold individual fructose sugars together to form short- and long-chain carbohydrates. These bonds cannot be broken down by the normal enzymatic mechanism for digesting soluble sugars in the stomach and small intestine. For this reason, these easily fermented sugars pass into the hindgut, a situation that leads to rapid production of lactic acid and volatile fatty acids (VFAs). VFAs are the normal products of the digestion of cellulose and other cell wall constituents of forages, so horses handle them well. Lactic acid, however, is neither efficiently used by other bacteria nor handily absorbed from the hindgut.

76

The Stable Magazine www.thestablemagazine.com

The resulting accumulation of lactic acid in the hindgut is one of the most direct causes of colic and laminitis in horses on pasture. All horses are subject to digestive upsets associated with lush spring pasture. The content of highly fermentable carbohydrates in lush pasture can be overwhelming to the unadapted digestive system. Ponies, because of a “thrifty” gene that allows them to survive on little more than limited amounts of medium-quality forages, and overweight horses, because of insulin resistance and associated high levels of circulating pro-inflammatory agents, are particularly susceptible to pastures with high fructan contents. However, many horses are able to handle some amount of pasture turnout if their digestive tracts are allowed time to adapt to the dietary change and if a hindgut balancer is used to help neutralize lactic acid. Fructans are produced by photosynthesis. Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves during daylight hours; the sunnier the day, the more photosynthesis, and therefore the more fructans.

Managing horses on high fructan pastures During the dark (overnight) phase of photosynthesis, plants use the sugars to grow more leaves and stems. Extra sugars that are not used for growth are store within the plant tissues. Many coolseason grasses store fructans in the lower two inches of the stem just above the soil line. However, temperatures at night are critical. If the temperature is not above 4 degrees C. at night, the plant will not grow and sugars remain in the leaves in high concentrations. One thing to consider is the daily cycle of high and low fructan levels. During seasons of warm days and cool nights (below 4 degrees), sensitive horses should not be allowed to graze at all, and grazing time should be limited for all horses. If the weather is sunny during the day and it stays warm at night, horses should be grazed early in the morning when plants have had the night hours to use up sugars from the day before. They should be taken off the pastures before the day gets hot and sugar production starts all over again.

Another factor to take into account is the ongoing life phase cycle of grasses. When grasses begin to grow in the spring, the first 3 to 6 inches of growth have very low levels of fructans. But the caution flag must go up: while fructans may be low during early pasture growth, the amounts of indigestible cellulose and lignin are also very low. Horses tend to eat large amounts of this appetizing new grass. In mature forages (plants above 8 to 10 inches that are going to seed), levels of fructans, cellulose, and lignin are higher, and the high cellulose and lignin levels tend to decrease intake. Whether horses eat smaller amounts of the lessappealing mature grass or larger amounts of the immature grass, fructan intake may total about the same for both scenarios. Pastures should be managed so that horses do not overgraze. In pastures that have been very heavily grazed, horses may have no choice but to consume the lower two inches of pasture plants where fructans are stored. However, horses tend to be selective when grazing, and

often choose to eat pasture plants with the highest fructan levels, even when a variety of forage is available. In addition, environmental pasture stress can cause fructan levels to increase. In plants reacting to drought or frost, fructan levels can rise by as much as 30%. As a general rule, horses that have high energy requirements can handle fructans as long as overall energy balance is taken into consideration. The classes of horses that can generally handle high fructan levels if they are allowed time to adapt to them gradually include growing horses (just don’t overfeed grain when fructans are high), lactating mares, hardworking horses, thin horses (that are not compromised by disease or parasites), and breeds that are known to be hard keepers like Thoroughbreds. Those that should generally avoid fructans are easy keepers, ponies, and any overweight horses. However, each horse is an individual, regardless of breed. Keep a close eye on all pastured horses, and check often for signs of colic or laminitis.

The fructan question can be very complex and confusing. When in doubt, use grazing muzzles if limiting intake is necessary; start with brief turnout periods and increase gradually when introducing horses to grass; consult your veterinarian for guidance and/or if you find signs of colic or laminitis; and keep sensitive horses off pasture completely. Use of a product such as KERx EquiShureŽ, a time-released hindgut balancer, is helpful in preventing metabolic problems associated with overconsumption of sugar-rich grasses. HORSEMANSHIP >> HORSEMANSHIP

Is it time to slap your horse? I don’t mean physically slapping him – it’s more of a metaphorical slap. I met a mare over the weekend who had a separation issue. On the Saturday we took her paddock mate out on a short ride – still on the property, and they could still hear each other and see each other most of the time. By the time we got back (30 minutes) she was in such a state that she was bashing herself up against the stable gate, in a lather of sweat, and calling uncontrollably. Even when we returned, and her paddock mate was no more than 10 metres away – she continued this behaviour – a danger to herself, her handler and the other horses around. This is not normal behaviour. In a wild mob situation, this mare would probably not develop such attachment issues – but if she did – she would be killed for it. Her herd would not be able to take the risk of such detrimental behaviour – think about it – a mare calling out constantly ? The predators would soon know where you were. A mare that thrashed about? She would soon injure herself or another horse nearby. The herd would either abandon her, or attack her.

Ask Tanja...

I’m not going to take such drastic action. But I am going to work with her on the ground, in a safe environment, while her mate gets taken away – so I can prove to her that she is ok. I call it a slap because its like when you watch a horror movie – and the damsel starts screaming uncontrollably, and inevitably someone walks up and slaps her – this ‘brings her round’ so she is once again a valuable member of the group. This is what we need to do with our horse that lacks confidence – we need to work her physically and mentally, to let her know “hey – you’re ok”. Your horse doesn’t want to behave like this – its not normal or natural, so help them feel good about themselves. Thats what support is all about.

Have you got a question you’d like to ask Tanja about your horse? Send your question to tanjajkraus@gmail.com with ‘Ask Tanja’ in the subject line - and check future issues of The Stable for Tanja’s responses!

BEING THE BUYER VS

BEING THE SELLER Horse trading can be a difficult process. Firstly, as the buyer, you're faced with many uncertainties. Will you find yourself the right horse? Will he pass the vet check? If he does, will he be the same, good natured horse you test rode once he's settled in at home? For the seller? An entirely different set of possible concerns. Will you find the right buyer? Will your horse fit in in his new home? Remain sound after you've advertised him and until you sell him? Will he get his evening carrot every day? Ok, so if your horse’s evening carrot is a serious concern for you - just hang on to the damned horse. What is one more mouth to feed anyway?

The problem can be when we come to sell ‘Sparky’ and find that, in actual fact, not *everybody* loves him as much as you do. Strange, huh?

Horse owners often see their own horses through rose-coloured glasses. No! Sparky never puts a foot wrong! How dare you suggest otherwise!?

While it might not seem like such a bad thing that we are somewhat short sighted when it comes to our horse’s flaws, it can actually be slightly detrimental to our horses - or those ‘on the

Yeah. You see? We often make allowances for the special horses in our lives. ‘She’s not too heavy, she’s just big boned!’ ‘That was not a bite, she was just tasting the salt on your hands.’ ‘She is a perfectly behaved pony. The problem is clearly with the saddle, the bridle, or the rider!’

So... Sellers, take a good, hard, objective look at your horse. If you think he’s flawless, make room for him in your paddocks and don’t go through with a sale. Buyers - beware the ‘will insist on weekly updates from new owner’, ‘new owner to ensure use of same vet/farrier/instructor’, and be very wary of the ‘comes with seventeen rugs for varying weather conditions’. Who would we rather be? Probably the seller. But then, it’d be so difficult to sell any - probably why the paddocks are already at maximum capacity!
