POLICE are closing in on fugitive pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the Police Regional Office in Davao Region (PRO-11) announced Tuesday.

“If we arrest him, Filipinos will know they can trust us. We are almost there. Let’s do it together,” PRO-11 Director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said in a press briefing here.

“We are really hell bent on bringing him to justice...We will not stop until he surrenders. And he has no right to demand anything. Who is he? Is he above the law?,” said Torre. Torre said information from a

Romualdez facilitated the release of P390 million in financial aid to indigents affected by the “Enteng,” which intensified into a severe tropical storm yesterday, leaving in its wake at least 12 dead and more than 300,000 displaced.

“We requested separate financial aid for the affected districts in accordance with the directive of President Bongbong Marcos to support those affected by the typhoon,” Romualdez said as his office and that of Tingog party-list began distributing 35,000 food packs—each containing canned goods, noodles, and rice— yesterday at evacuation centers in Metro Manila and Rizal.

“I understand how overwhelming it must be to face these challenges backto-back, and I want you to know that you are not alone – we stand with you during this difficult time,” he added.

“Enteng” is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility today (Wednesday), even as rains brought about by the storm and the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” may persist until Friday.

Landslides and extreme flooding during the height of the “Enteng” left at least 12 people dead, the Office of Civil Defense said Tuesday.

On the other hand, standing guard against the big Chinese fleet in Escoda Shoal is the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) largest ship, BRP Teresa Magbanua.

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will release its guidelines in addressing campaign-related misinformation and disinformation on social media, including the so-called “deepfakes” or audiovisual materials produced using artificial intelligence (AI), as early as next week.

At the House Committee on Appropriations hearing on its proposed 2025

budget on Tuesday, Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said the poll body is ready to publish its “historic resolution” versus false information or ‘fake news’ soon.

“We will release as early as next week our guidelines on social media, guidelines on AI, guidelines on deepfakes including misinformation/disinformation,” Garcia told House Deputy

Mayor Alice Guo or Guo Hua Ping, and her cohorts.

Minority Leader and ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro.

“This is a historic resolution because it’s never been done before— this kind of resolution—but we will attempt to do that simply because we don’t have laws that regulate social media,” the Comelec chief noted. Castro inquired about the status of

'Only 3% of 6,379 classrooms built by DepEd in 2023'

Under Proclamation No. 678, the national flag will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on all government buildings

CONGRESS continues to unravel the web of secrets behind Philippine Overseas Gaming Operators (POGOs), their deep connections in government agencies, and the illegal activities they helped fund during the Duterte Administration. On Tuesday, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian vowed to challenge the intelligence funds of the country’s law enforcement agencies following their failure to prevent the escape of dismissed Bamban

“There was indeed a failure of intelligence within our law enforcement agencies,” the senator told reporters.

“Once we deliberate on their budgets for 2025, I will definitely ask these agencies how their intelligence funds are being spent and how they build an efficient intelligence network,” he added.

Gatchalian said the intelligence community should have kept tabs on Guo after her last appearance at a Senate hearing on May 22.

“They freely transferred from different places and even reached a seaport,” the Ways and Means Committee chair noted.

“What happened to the network created by [our law] enforcement agencies? Whether there was collusion or a failure of intelligence, there should be accountability on

THE Department of Education (DepEd) either failed to deliver or poorly delivered on already-funded projects in 2023, the Commission on Audit (COA) revealed in its latest report.

State auditors reported that the agency only managed to build 192 classrooms out of its goal of 6,379 classrooms last year, when Vice President Sara Duterte was still at its helm. “Only 192 (3.01 percent) out of 6,379 classrooms were completed/constructed in 2023 due to realignments because of modifications in the projects’ design,” the COA disclosed in its 2023 annual report. DOJ, SC, DILG ink info sharing pact

THE Department of Justice (DOJ), the Supreme Court (SC), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) signed on Tuesday a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of the National Justice Information Systems (NJIS) held in Cagayan de Oro City.

DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, and Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos signed on behalf of their respective offices.

OCD spokesperson Edgar Posadas told ANC the majority of the deaths were due to drowning.

In Antipolo, Relly Bernardo of the local disaster risk and management office said four were killed due to landslides while three died from drowning.

For his part, Romualdez said financial aid of P10 million each will be distributed to indigent families in the the 39 congressional districts affected by the storm.

“While this may be a small step, I hope it offers some immediate relief and helps you begin the process of rebuilding. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the House Members who moved swiftly to ensure this support reached those who need it most. Their dedication to serving their communities in such trying times is commendable,” he added.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development, for its part, distributed more than P16 million worth of augmentation support to local government units to help them meet the needs of their constituents affected by “Enteng.”

DSWD Assistant Secretary for Disaster Response Management Group Irene Dumlao said the aid covers food and non-food items distributed in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Central and Eastern Visayas.

“Enteng” displaced over 80,000 families, or over 300,000 individuals, Dumlao said, with over 14,000 families or about 60,000 individuals staying in evacuation centers across the affected regions.

As this developed, an environmental expert said the recent flooding in Rizal could be attributed to outdated drainage systems that could not handle increasing surface runoff.

In a TV Patrol interview, Rex Cruz, a Professor Emeritus at UP Los Baños, said: “Apparently our drainage systems in the past didn’t really take into account that at some point in the future, like now, the surface runoff would increase.”

The senator also criticized the snail’s pace process of filing charges against Alice Guo and her cohorts in establishing illegal POGO hubs.

He pointed out that had the Senate and the House of Representatives not issued arrest orders, there would have been no basis for bringing in Alice’s purported sister Shiela, and POGO executive Katherine Cassandra Ong back to the country.

At the Lower House, lawmakers are not surprised that the Duterte administration could afford to offer monetary rewards to police officers for every suspected drug personality they manage to execute given the amount of money paid by POGOs.

The alleged government-sanctioned murders are claimed to have led to the deaths of as many as 30,000 Filipinos.

“In just three hearings, the Quad Comm inquiry has exposed an intricate and expansive network of smuggling and trafficking in dangerous drugs, illegal Philippine offshore gambling operators or POGOs and illegal gambling activities like jueteng that flourished during the Duterte presidency,” said Manila Rep. The NJIS aims to enforce the law and administer justice more efficiently and expediently by establishing interagency connectivity among justicesector agencies.

Through NJIS, justice sector agencies can swiftly coordinate and share data with one another through the NJIS Data Exchange Platform, according to

the DOJ.

Meanwhile, Gesmundo underscored record processing will become more efficient with the use of technology.

“We have to constantly look for ways to improve and upgrade how we work… we will be sharing data, public court records, court dockets, and schedules, warrants, subpoenas, and other court orders,” said the Chief Justice.

For his part, Abalos described the information system as “very handy, expedient, fast, and effective for everyone.”

He noted the DILG will be funding the said project. Abalos further said this partnership

Memorial commission, UP trade blame in delay in Martial Law museum construction

THE Human Rights Violations Victims Memorial Commission (HRVVMC) claimed the University of the Philippines (UP) was responsible for the delay in the planned construction of a long-anticipated Martial Law museum within its Diliman campus.

During the House budget deliberations of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), HRVVMC head Chuck Crisanto said the first step that UP needed to take was to sign the handover or turnover document from the memorial commission.

“That means they can now fully control the assets we have provided, and infuse from their own budget P50 million more to complete landscaping, the office buildings for the staff of the community maintenance office yard

ties are evils by themselves, but what is disturbing is that the funds from these illegal enterprises were channeled to fund incentives intended to reward law enforcement for eliminating their targets––even if this resulted in the wanton and widespread violation of human rights,” he said citing the revelations of whistleblowers.

At the most recent Quad Comm hearing, witness Police Lt. Col. Jovie Espenido told lawmakers that Duterte and the Philippine National Police, under its then chief and now Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, set a daily quota for policemen to “neutralize” 50 to 200 targets in their supposed war on drugs.

When asked by panel members to explain what “neutralize” meant, Espenido said it was understood by policemen to mean the killing of suspects.

According to Espenido, the reward system gave implementers P20,000 for each “kill.”

The incentive scheme was supposedly funded by money from illegal drugs, POGOs, jueteng, and other illegal gambling activities, as well as the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office’s (PCSO) small-town lottery projects.

Espenido alleged that funds were funneled through the former president’s chief aide and now Senator Bong Go.

Two other witnesses, confessed killers Leopoldo Tan Jr. and Andy Magdadaro, testified that they executed Chinese drug lords inside the Davao prison in 2016 on the orders of Duterte himself, which were relayed through senior police officers.

and workshop to move,” Crisanto said.

“Without them signing that handover document or turnover document, UP will not be allocated funds to finish the relocation. We’ve finished our part of the agreement in October 2022. We gave them the impetus to accept it in June 2023. If I look at the number of months that I have been delayed by the UP, it’s like 20 months,” he added.

UP, however, said the construction of the planned museum was delayed since a “necessary deed of transfer and possession has not yet been signed with the Human Rights Violation Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVVMC).”

The state university said HRVVMC had funded a new P80-million building where the UP Diliman Campus Maintenance Office will be transferred after it vacates the site where the museum will rise.

Security analist Ray Powell of the maritime transparency initiative SeaLight warned the possibility of China is trying to push BRP Magbanua out of Escoda Shoal “cannot be discounted.”

Over the weekend, BRP Magbanua was deliberately rammed multiple times by a Chinese vessel.

Escoda Shoal is about 140 kilometers off Palawan and about 1,200 kilometers from Hainan island, the nearest major Chinese landmass. Meanwhile, 52 Chinese ships were spotted near Pagasa Island while 26 were deployed in Ayungin Shoal.

Deputy Speaker Yasser Alonto Balindong: Championing Lanao del Sur’s 2nd District

LANAO del Sur’s second district, a region nestled in the heart of Mindanao, is a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage, vibrant traditions, and complex political dynamics. Its breathtaking landscapes are a sight to behold, but it’s the diverse ethnic groups, each with its own unique traditions and historical significance, that truly captivate the imagination.

This diversity is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Filipino people, and a source of pride for all who call this region home. Meanwhile, the political landscape of Lanao del Sur’s second district, as intricate as its cultural heritage, is also a story of resilience and progress. Despite a history of conflict and political unrest, the district has made significant strides in recent years, improving security and promoting development. This progress offers a beacon of hope, signaling a brighter future on the horizon.

The leaders of the second district play a crucial role in safeguarding its integrity and ensuring a brighter future. Through effective governance, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, they strive to address the region’s pressing issues, such as poverty, education, and healthcare. These leaders are working to create a more prosperous and equitable future for the district by promoting peace, fostering economic growth, and empowering local communities. In the 19th Congress, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of Rep. Yasser Alonto Balindong, who also serves as the House of Representatives’ Deputy Speaker since November 2023.

Rep. Balindong assumed the position of district representative in 2019. Before that, he was an assemblyman for the Regional Legislative Assembly for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) from 2005 to 2016. The district representative also draws some of his inspiration for being a deputy speaker and public leader from his father, Atty. Pangalian Balindong, who served as the Former House Deputy Speaker and current Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliament Speaker.

Since assuming office in the House of Representatives, Rep. Balindong has made notable contributions through programs and projects in Lanao del Sur’s second district. Rep. Balindong spearheaded the distribution of Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), a kind of social safety net or emergency plan designed to help people and families recover from unforeseen crises like illness or the death of a family member, medical and financial assistance, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Scholarships, and various Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) training.

Meanwhile, the district representative’s projects focused on building infrastructure to promote economic growth, agricultural security, and connectivity throughout Lanao del Sur’s second district. Some of his projects include the construction of national roads, including the Marawi-Malabang and Ganassi Roads, local roads, multipurpose buildings, water systems, irrigations, and flood control structures. These projects left an undeniable impact in the area, thereby improving the constituents’ lives.

In the 19th Congress, Rep. Balindong is the principal author of 92 bills and co-authored 19 others. His legislations span different focuses, from human rights to health and more.

Some of his key legislations include Republic Act No. 11696 or the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act of 2022, House Bill No. 10261 or an act providing for the condonation of unpaid interests, penalties, surcharges, and unremitted universal charges on the overdue obligations of the Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc., and gave the privilege speech on the utilization of public funds for the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos’ coordination and management of the Hajj Pilgrimage and ensuring compliance with mandated standards.

11885, of

Other bills that Rep. Balindong authored are Republic Act Nos. 11884, 11870, and 11885, all of which aim to increase the bed capacity of the Balindong District Hospital in Wato-Balindong, Serapio B. Montaner Jr. Memorial Hospital in Malabang, and the Unayan Municipal Hospital in Binidayan, respectively.

Besides being the Deputy Speaker, Rep. Balindong is also the Vice Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation and the Committee on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity.

When he became the Deputy Speaker of the 19th Congress, Rep. Balindong promised the House of Representatives that, despite the leadership change, he would protect the chamber’s honor and integrity.

As he continues to hold an office in the House of Representatives and serve as the voice of Lanao del Sur’s second district, Rep. Balindong

Taiwan in need of 8,000 Filipino workers in manufacturing, group says

TAIWAN needs at least 8,000 Filipino workers willing to work in the manufacturing sector, according to the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO).

MECO chairman Silvestre H. Bello III said the job vacancies are up for grabs in job fairs slated for September 9 and 11 in the cities of Laoag and Vigan in the Ilocos provinces to be participated in by 17 Taiwan Manpower Agencies and employers.

OFWs urge ASEAN to unite in WPS issue

IN light of the recent incident where a Chinese Coast Guard vessel repeatedly and intentionally rammed the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Teresa Magbanua, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are calling on Southeast Asian nations to unite with the Philippines in opposing China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea.

As OFWs around the world continue to contribute to their families and the nation, they are also keenly aware of the challenges facing their homeland.

The Japan-based Mabuhay Radio has been featuring videos of OFWs who fear that China’s continued harassment in the WPS could affect their livelihood and families.

The videos have gone viral and the hashtag #StandWithFilipinos has gained traction.

According to Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, there is a misconception within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that the Philippines is the only country being targeted by China. However, he pointed out that Malaysia and Vietnam have also faced similar harassment in contested waters.

“Even the Malaysian government and Vietnam are experiencing the same form of harassment and bullying from the Chinese Coast Guard,” Tarriela noted during an interview on Super Radyo dzBB. OFWs share the frustration of many Filipinos back home, as Tarriela expressed disappointment over the seeming silence of Southeast Asian neighbors regarding the escalating tensions in the South China Sea, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.

“It’s disheartening that the countries supporting our position in the West Philippine Sea are mostly from outside the region—like the United States, Japan, Australia, and the European Union,” Tarriela said. “It’s unusual that our own neighbors remain silent, and that is our ultimate concern,” he added.

They include the Grand Placement, FilSino, Everbest, City Employment, Sky Bourne, Jedegal, Bright Star, Jopman, EyeQuest, September Star, Tengllong, Workforce, World Trans, Gerdin, and Mission Way. Leading Taiwan food processing company IMEI Foods and Golden Brothers are also participating.

Organized jointly with the Department of Migrant Workers, the Migrant Workers Offices in Taiwan and the provincial governments of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, and the local Public Employment Services Offices,

the job events are expected to draw in thousands of jobseekers from the Ilocos provinces and nearby areas.

Ilocos Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos III, and local officials led by Ilocos Norte Gov. Matthew Joseph Manotoc, Ilocos Sur Gov. Jeremias Singson and former Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson will be joined by Bello and DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia and Taipei Migrant Workers Office director Cesar Chavez in the event.

The venues of the event are the Centennial Arena in Laoag City, and the Provincial Farmers Livelihood Development Center on Quezon Ave., Vigan City.

LTO urged to ramp up license plate production

SENATE Majority Leader Francis Tolentino on Tuesday told the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to use the extension period to ramp up its production of official license plates for millions of riders and motorists.

He also thanked the LTO for pushing back to December 31 the grace period for the use of temporary and provisional license plates for motorcycles and motor vehicles, without the threat of apprehension and penalties.

“The prohibition will resume by December 31, but we hope that by that time, the LTO has already studied the consequences of its policy and the steps needed to resolve its own backlog,” Tolentino said.

“They promised to make signifi cant progress. We’ll see what happens on December 31, whether the deadline will be extended further, or if plates will finally be issued.”

He added that December 31 seems to be an “imaginary target.”

While the LTO claims that it has

closed the license supply shortage for motor vehicles, the senator said that the backlog remains significant in the case of motorcycle riders.

“For Cebu, the LTO came up with a solution that required motorcycle owners to secure a certification to prove that they have not been issued an official license plate yet. They are

made to line up and pay P40 for this document. If they get caught, the fine is P5,000,” he said.

“Do not penalize motorcycle riders for a problem they did not create. They are unduly being burdened instead of being allowed to ply the road and make a living,” he asserted.

Solante says Dengvaxia raps affected many doctors

INFECTIOUS disease expert Dr. Rontgene Solante shared how the medical practitioners, who were supposedly not involved, suffered from being dragged into dengvaxia cases, emphasizing that it affected their professional careers.

The Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 229 dismissed the cases against the doctors.

Following the decision, the prosecution, which includes Dr. Tony Leachon, filed a Motion for Reconsideration (MR) but was denied, and “the orders granting their demurrers stand.”

“I welcome the Court’s decision in dismissing the cases against these legitimate medical experts. Justice was truly served. RTC’s decision upheld the principles of fairness and due process in the legal system,” Solante said in a statement sent to reporters covering the House of Representatives said.

“It is unfortunate that our medical professionals had to endure undue suffering and face significant challenges due to the spread of misinformation propagated by ‘fake experts.’”

Former OIC-DG of the Food and Drug Administration Lulu Santiago, former Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) head Socorro Lupisan, and pediatrician and medical researcher Dr. Rose Capeding were among those medical practitioners who were dragged in the dengvaxia cases. Solante said that the vaccine underwent a ‘rigorous’ evaluation process and has met the standards of quality and safety.

Filipinos can celebrate life with bumper bamboos

WHEN the monsoon rains begin to sweep the Philippine archipelago, many farmers from up north in Ilocos Norte, Cagayan and the Cordilleras down to the hinterlands of Mindanao like Surigao del Sur share a smile.

The southwest monsoon affects the country from late June to October (occurrence may also vary each year) and the low season occurs during the habagat season because of frequent rainfall and high humidity.

As abundant as the rains tumble down from June, soon after summer, bamboo shoots start to be plentiful, traditionally used as vegetable food among them and as well in other Southeast Asian countries.

A cultural quipster says with bamboos in abundance Filipinos can truly celebrate life.

Officials from the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development say the demand at present in the world market for bamboo shoots is “increasing because of their nutritional and health benefits.”

The bamboo shoots -– “rabong” in the north of the country and “labong” elsewhere or dabong in Surigao del Sur and described as the King of Forest Vegetables in Japan -– have been a traditional forest vegetable in most parts of this archipelago of 115 million.

In China, the bamboo shoots have been considered a forest vegetable too for the past more than 2,500 years -–delicious and rich in nutrients and rank among the five most popular healthcare foods in the world.

Agriculture sources say modern research suggests the bamboo shoots have several medicinal benefits, from cancer prevention and weight loss to improving appetite and digestion. It is also low in sugar and therefore can be used for treating hypertension, hyperlipemia and hyperglycemia, according to these sources.

Japanese scientists recently discovered bamboo shoots contain anti-cancer agents and making them a regular part of the diet effectively eliminates the free radicals that can produce dangerous carcinogens. They add with the economic development and the improvement of people’s living standards, demand for natural foods, especially organic food, has greatly increased.

For instance, Moso bamboo does not contain toxic substances and its products are made in strict accordance with the food safety standards, which makes it an ideal resource for natural foods.

Agriculture sources say the main nu-

trients in bamboo shoots are protein, amino acid, fat, sugar and inorganic salt.

They are rich in protein, containing between 1.49 and 4.04 grams (average 2.65g) per 100g of fresh bamboo shoots. The bamboo protein produces eight essential and two semi-essential amino acids.

Although the fat content is comparatively low (0.26-0.94 percent), it is still higher than in many other vegetables, and the shoots contain rich essential fatty acids.

Bamboos, which require less effort and capital in growing them, can even be an export earner if cultivated and processed on a commercial scale

The total sugar content, 2.5 percent on average, is lower than that in other vegetables. The water content is 90 percent or more.

According to PCAARRD, bamboo shoots offer what it calls “promising livelihood opportunities,” and, when mature, “can be extensively grown in a wide range of habitats from lowland to mountain forests in both dry and humid tropics, even on wastelands, swamps, and dry or regularly flooded river banks.”

PCAARRD sources say bamboos, which require less effort and capital in growing them, can even be an export earner if cultivated and processed on a commercial scale.

They note in the Philippines, where bamboo architecture can beautify even the posh residential landscape of some upscale subdivision, most of the commercial bamboo species grown primarily for pole production are also being harvested for their edible shoots.

In the Ilocos region, for instance, and even in the Cagayan Valley, the Cordilleras, and the Iluko-speaking parts of Central Luzon, “rabong” cooked with bamboo mushrooms, garlic bulbs and jute mallow leaves is a perennial delicacy that always flirts with the Ilocano palate.

Officials add bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia, being used for building materials, as a food source, and as a versatile raw product.

‘A way of life’: The Japanese dancer conquering Spain’s flamenco scene

MADRID – Japan’s Junko Hagiwara has caused a stir in Spain’s traditional flamenco world by unexpectedly winning the prize for best dancer at the country’s leading flamenco festival -the first foreigner to do so. The announcement that the 48-yearold -- who performs under the stage name “La Yunko” -- was awarded the honor at the closing ceremony of August’s “Cante de las Minas” festival in the southeastern town of La Union was met with a mixture of applause and some jeering.

“I was very surprised, I could not believe it. I believed it but I did not believe it,” she told AFP by phone from the southern city of Seville, where she has lived for over two decades when asked about her reaction to getting the award.

Hagiwara, who was born in Kawasaki near Tokyo, said she did not notice the jeers because she “went blank” when her name was announced as the winner.

“When I dance, I don’t think I am a foreigner, that I am Japanese. I don’t think that. It doesn’t occur to me. I am simply on stage, I listen to the guitar, the singing and what I feel I express in my dancing,” she added.

Created in 1961, the “Cante de las Minas” festival is considered to be the world’s most important annual flamenco festival.

It features prizes for best singing, guitar playing and musical instrument per-

formance in addition to dance.

Critics were unanimous in their support for Hagiwara.

“I liked her more than her competitors for three reasons: her classicism, the fact that she did not dance for the gallery, that is, for the public, and, finally, her good training,” flamenco critic Manuel Bohorquez wrote in online newspaper Sevilla Info.

‘Way of life

Hagiwara said she became fascinated by flamenco -- a centuries-old art form that combines rhythmic hand clapping, stamping feet and impassioned singing -- at age 14 when she watched a gymnastics championship in which a Spanish competitor used the genre’s guitar music.

“I loved the flamenco guitar, the sound and the melody, the rhythm,” she said. There was no internet at the time to

Call for Quiboloy’s surrender

protocols” of the PNP.

WE JOIN Senator Ronald dela Rosa in his bidding for Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy to surrender to authorities so its members’ lives could “return to normal.”

Police have been searching for the 74-year-old Quiboloy since Aug. 24 to serve warrants, issued by the courts, for his arrest as well as those of his five co-accused on charges of sexual abuse and human trafficking.

First, Quiboloy went into hiding shortly after the Senate issued an arrest warrant against him for refusing to attend the chamber’s hearings.

At that time, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Quiboloy should use inquiries at the House of Representatives and the Senate to “say his side of the story” as both chambers issued subpoenas after he failed to attend hearings.

The Department of Justice then announced Qualified Human Trafficking charges, which are non-bailable, under Section 4 (a) of Republic Act 9208, as amended, pursuant to the Resolution were filed before a Pasig

court against him filed before a Pasig City court. Quiboloy was also charged under Section 5(b) of Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act and under Section 10(a) of the same act before a Davao court.

The Court of Appeals has issued a freeze against Quiboloy’s 10 bank accounts, seven real properties, five motor vehicles, and one aircraft

Last April, a Davao court issued a warrant of arrest against Quiboloy, described by police as a fugitive from justice, and five others. Authorities later served the warrant against him, but he was not found at the KOJC compound in Davao City. The warrant was handed to the administrator of the property.

The Philippine National Police said the service of the warrants was a “lawful operation” and carried out “in strict compliance with legal security

IN OUR previous column, we discussed one of the strongest arguments against HB 10270 which is the significant financial burden it could place on the government.

With pressing needs in other sectors, some argue that the resources allocated to this bill might be better spent elsewhere. But proponents counter that investing in education is a long-term commitment that will yield returns in the form of a more prosperous and equitable society.

Fairness and objectivity in assessments

Another concern is the potential for bias and subjectivity in the performance assessments that will determine promotions.

If the assessment process is not transparent and fair, it could lead to favoritism, discrimination, and ultimately, a demoralized teaching workforce.

To address this, it is crucial the Department of Education and other relevant agencies develop robust, clear, and objective assessment tools, accompanied by comprehensive training for assessors and transparent appeal mechanisms.

Regional Disparities

There is also the risk the new system could exacerbate existing inequalities between teachers in urban and rural areas.

Teachers in remote regions often face additional challenges, like lack of access to professional development opportunities and resources.

Without targeted interventions, these disparities could widen under the new system. The government must

help her explore her new interest, so she went to a shop that rented records and borrowed the only available flamenco CD.

“I listened to it, but there was no guitar, it was just singing,” she recalled.

“Flamenco performers often have a very hoarse voice, very deep, and it scared me,” she added while laughing.

Hagiwara went on to study pedagogy at Waseda University in Tokyo, where she joined a flamenco club, and started to take flamenco lessons.

But she felt she needed more.

In 2002 she decided to take the dramatic move across the world to Seville,

Quiboloy’s lawyer Israelito Torreon reiterated the other day Quiboloy’s condition for President Marcos to issue a written declaration Quiboloy would not be given to the United States.

Dela Rosa, who had earlier asked President Marcos to order the withdrawal of 2,000 cops deployed at the KOJC compound, said he does not see Quiboloy’s condition as a “demand” –qualifying that as his assumption only. But we underline DOJ Undersecretary Raul Vasquez’s statement that “no one in government can give that guarantee, strictly speaking.”

The fugitive televangelist is alleged to have engaged in sex trafficking by force, coercion, and sex trafficking of children in the United States although he has not been given the chance to face his accusers.

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos also said private individuals wanted to help in apprehending Quiboloy and offered a P10 million reward for information that will lead to his arrest.

Last month, the Court of Appeals issued a freeze against Quiboloy’s 10 bank accounts, seven real properties, five motor vehicles, and one aircraft. The order also included the bank accounts of KOJC and the Swara Sug Media Corporation. Our eyes are on duty.

ensure that all teachers, regardless of location, have equal opportunities to advance their careers.

New era for Filipino teachers

Despite the challenges, HB 10270 represents a critical step toward empowering Filipino teachers and revitalizing the public education system.

The bill’s potential to improve teacher motivation, enhance educational outcomes, and contribute to national development cannot be overstated.

—“—

With careful planning and implementation, HB 10270 has the potential to uplift the teaching profession, improve educational outcomes, and contribute to the longterm prosperity of the nation

However, its success will depend on the government’s commitment to addressing the financial, administrative, and equity challenges that may arise.

To maximize the impact of HB 10270, several actions are recommended:

1. Ensure adequate funding

The government must prioritize funding for the implementation of HB 10270. This may involve reallocating

capital of the southern region of Andalusia and the cradle of flamenco, to pursue her passion. She made the move despite objections from her parents.

“In Japan, you can learn technique, choreography, but, of course, flamenco is culture, it’s a way of life,” she said.

“My father got very, very angry. He did not speak to me for three months. And my mother said ‘how shameful, how shameful’,” Hagiwara said.

Culture shocks

In Spain, she dedicated herself to flamenco, learning to dance with the best teachers, became fluent in Spanish and

resources from less critical areas or exploring alternative financing mechanisms, such as public-private partnerships.

Develop fair and transparent assessment processes

DepEd should collaborate with education experts to design fair and objective performance assessments. Comprehensive training programs for assessors and clear communication with teachers about the assessment criteria and processes are essential.

Address Regional Disparities

The government should implement targeted programs to support teachers in underserved areas.

This could include providing additional resources, professional development opportunities, and financial incentives for teachers willing to work in these regions.

Regular review and adjustment

Finally, the career progression system should be subject to regular review and adjustment based on its effectiveness and the evolving needs of the education sector.

This will ensure that the system remains relevant and continues to serve the best interests of teachers and students alike.

While HB 10270 is not a panacea for all the challenges facing the Philippine education system, it is a significant step in the right direction. With careful planning and implementation, it has the potential to uplift the teaching profession, improve educational outcomes, and contribute to the long-term prosperity of the nation. The stakes are high, but so too is the potential reward.

married an Andalusian man from the coastal town of Tarifa.

She gradually made a name for herself as a performer in Seville, and has also taught flamenco.

As is the case with many foreigners, she was surprised at first by the lively way locals talked to each other.

“I thought everyone was fighting!” Hagiwara said. There were other differences.

“In Japanese culture, we place a lot of value on hiding the feeling, and in flamenco, you have to show it. In Japan it is for the inside, and in flamenco it is for the outside,” she said. AFP

Angara’s budget testimony draws solons’ praises

HOUSE leaders have praised Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara for his exemplary conduct during a gruelling almost 12-hour hearing by the House Committee on Appropriations on the agency’s proposed P793.18billion budget for 2025.

The lawmakers noted that Angara’s remarkable testimony was a sharp contrast to the “aggressive behavior” of his predecessor, Vice President Sara Duterte at the legislative inquiry.

The legislators led by House Assistant Majority Leader and Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Raul Angelo Bongalon commended Angara for his “thorough and respectful responses,” especially given that he was merely addressing problems inherited from the former DepEd chief, demonstrating his ability to tackle the challenges head-on. Bongalon, vice chairman of the appropriations committee, lauded Angara’s respectful and diligent approach, emphasizing his ability to address every question from the lawmakers despite having been at the helm of the DepEd for only six weeks.

“Secretary Angara’s professionalism and composure during the hearing reflect a true commitment to public service. His respectful engagement was a breath of fresh air,” Bongalon said.

“It’s impressive that Secretary Angara handled these issues so well, especially considering that he inherited these problems from the previous (DepEd) administration,” he added.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre was more direct in comparing Angara’s leadership to Duterte’s “bullying and seemingly entitled behavior.”

BI halts 4 plane pax with tampered passports

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) has intercepted four hopeful overseas workers who attempted to e for work as call centers in Cambodia after it was discovered their passports were stamped with fake departure clearance.

BI officers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 intercepted a 40-year-old male attempting to board a Cathay Pacific morning flight to Hong Kong. The passenger allegedly presented a passport marked with a dubious immigration departure stamp. The man admitted that he was of-

fered work by a female recruiter he met on Facebook. The victim alleged that his recruiter demanded P120,000 as processing fee and promised that the victim could bypass Immigration smoothly and without being detected.

Immigration officers also prevented three suspected human trafficking victims who tried to board a Jetstar flight to Singapore, also with suspicious Immigration stamps in their passports.

The travelers claimed to be friends going to Cambodia for leisure, but later admitted they had been recruited to work as call center agents, with a P50,000-salary for a 12-hour shift.

AN ANTICORRUPTION advocate at the House of Representatives has rallied behind the Office of Ombudsman’s filing of criminal charges against former high-ranking government officials linked to irregularities in the transfer and use of COVID-19 funds during the pandemic.

“We express our full support and solidarity with the Office of Ombudsman in pursuing justice on behalf of the Filipinos against those who looted public funds at the height of the pandemic. May the Ombudsman show no mercy against those who conspired to rob the Filipino people,” said Rep. Eddie Villanueva of Citizens Battle Against Corruption (Cibac) party-list group.

“This action of the Ombudsman is a crucial step in tilting the momentum of the anti-corruption crusade of the government. There should be no sacred cow when the interest of the people is at stake,” Villanueva stressed.

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne. Our government, being just an extension of God’s seat of power, must be similarly founded on the same,” he added.

The Ombudsman filed a graft case against former Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III and former Department of Budget and Management Procurement Service (DBM-PS) executive director Lloyd Christopher Lao over alleged irregularities in the transfer and use of P41.46-billion funds from the DOH to the DBM-PS during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Saclag set for ONE debut vs. tough Korean

BEMEDALLED national athlete Jean Claude Saclag now moves to the ONE Championship stage after flying the flag in kickboxing and wushu over the past decade.

The three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medallist for kickboxing and the 2014 Asian Games silver medalist for wushu sanda now makes his ONE debut when he battles Lee Jun Young in a flyweight MMA bout set at ONE Friday Fights 78 live from inside Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, on September 6. Saclag has been a staple for the national team, as he’s also represented the country in the 2014 Wushu World Cup, winning gold there, while also snagging bronze in the 2013 Wushu World Championships.

This time around, he looks to carry the Philippine flag in the world of MMA while donning the familiar red trunks of Team Lakay.

It won’t be easy against the man Korean MMA fans fondly call the “Bad Guy.” Lee comes in with a 5-1 record, four of which coming from finishes with his left hook looking like a lethal weapon

Saclag will have to watch out for.

But Saclag will be more than up to the task if the Korean decides to stand and trade with him, as aside from his kickboxing experience with the national team, he gets to slug it out with some of the fiercest strikers of Team Lakay on a daily basis.

Saclag joins Carlos Alvarez on the ONE Friday Fights circuit as they look to follow in the footsteps of teammate Carlo Bumina-ang who became the first Filipino fighter to win a US$100,000 contract through Lumpinee.

Medvedev sets up potential showdown with no. 1 Sinner

NEW YORK—Daniil Medvedev set-up a potential US Open quarter-final showdown with world no. 1 Jannik Sinner on Monday as both men looked to exploit the huge hole left by the shock exits of superstar duo Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

Medvedev, the 2021 champion in New York, outclassed Nuno Borges, who was bidding to become the first Portuguese man to make a Grand Slam quarter-final, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3.

Top seed Sinner, who won his maiden Slam at the Australian Open this year, takes on Tommy Paul in the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

French Open champion and women’s world number one Iga Swiatek, meanwhile, stayed on course for a sixth Grand Slam title with a straight sets win over Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova.

Medvedev, the only former champion left after the defeats of four-time winner Djokovic and 2022 champion Alcaraz, is in the quarter-finals for the fifth time in six years.

The world number five easily downed 34th-ranked Borges whose challenge fizzled out under the weight of 51 unforced errors while Medvedev broke serve eight times.

“I played Tommy twice this season. I beat him once but I feel as if he should have beaten me both times,” said Medvedev who was also runner-up in 2019 and last year.

“I’ve had unbelievable battles with

Jannik. It will be very physical for both of us.”

Sinner, 23, faces Paul of the United States hoping to become the only man this year to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slams.

The Italian made the last-eight at New York in 2022 where he squandered a match point in losing to eventual champion Alcaraz.

Paul, the 14th seed, is looking to join compatriots Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals as the US looks for a first male Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick triumphed in New York in 2003.

If Sinner gets through he will meet Medvedev for the fourth time this year.

Sinner came back from two sets to love down to defeat the mercurial Medvedev in the Australian Open final and came out on top in the Miami semi-finals.

Jack Draper became the first British man since Andy Murray in 2016 to reach the quarter-finals by seeing off Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

The 22-year-old left-hander has only dropped serve once over four matches on his way to a maiden Slam quarter-

“Boxing fans will be in for a treat as the event is free to the public and an opportunity for them to watch world-caliber boxing,” said Pacquiao, who starred for Blow-By-Blow during the 1990s.

Pacquiao is bankrolling the slugfest with Petron backing him every step of the way and the City of Mandaluyong providing solid support as well.

“I’ve got Petron, a heavyweight in my corner, and Man-

Draper hailed the influence of Murray, the former world number one and 2012 US Open champion, who retired from tennis following the Paris Olympics.

“He’s a legend and an icon and if I have half the career that he had I will be a happy man,” said the 25th seed who goes on to face Alex de Minaur.

The 10th seeded De Minaur won an all-Australian battle with Jordan Thompson 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Four-time French Open winner Swiatek, the 2022 champion in New York, celebrated her 100th Grand Slam match by cantering to a 6-4, 6-1 win over 16th-ranked Samsonova.

The Pole will take on American sixth seed Jessica Pegula for a place in the semi-finals.

“There will be some long rallies and intense hitting,” said Swiatek of facing Pegula who she also beat in the quarter-finals on her way to the 2022 title.

US sixth seed Pegula made the lasteight for the second time with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Russia’s Diana Shnaider.

Beatriz Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian woman to reach the quarter-finals since Maria Bueno in 1968 when she defeated 2014 runner-up Caroline Wozniacki.

The 22nd-ranked left-hander converted a third match point to defeat the former world number one 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. AFP

Rebuilding Eagles try to make it to Final 4 anew

THE Ateneo Blue Eagles maybe in a rebuilding mode, but they will try to make it again to the Final Four in the coming Season 87 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament. Their talented recruits Jared Bahay, Kristian Porter and Femi Edu are expected to provide them the spark they need to make it far in the coming season, which gets going on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Blue Eagles, who will meet the University of Philippines Fighting Maroons in the 6 p.m. opening game, will find out how good they are with Bahay, Kristian Porter and Femi Edu in the mix.

Bahay is a standout from the Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu, like Porter, while Femi is the younger brother of Gilas Pilipinas standout AJ Edu. He entered the roster late June after graduating from Copleston High School in Ipswich.

The Blue Eagles were unable to defend their crown in Season 86 as they saw many of their players joining the professional league.

Coach Tab Baldwin is left with Chris Koon and Sean Quintveis to bring experience to the team, after Mason Amos, Kai Ballungay, Jared Brown, Joseph Obasa, Gab Gomez and Raffy Celis departed at the end of Season 86 with a win-loss record of 7-7 at fourth place.

Bahay, at first committed to suit up for the Fighting Maroons, but changed his mind later.

Raising young Spartans: Role of family in building young champions

THE 2024 Kids World Championship was recently held last August 17, 2024 in Chongli, China, and young Filipino champions have once again proven their strength, endurance, and perseverance on the global stage.

Behind every young Spartan who crossed the finish line was a dedicated support system in their families, playing a crucial role in nurturing them toward excellence. MILO® Philippines, in collaboration with Spartan Kids Philippines, was also one with the athletes as they took part in the celebration of the vital role of family support in raising the next generation of Champions.

Ten-year old Juliana and 7-year old Sebastian, children of Namee and Justin Sunico showcased their incredible talent and determination at the Spartan Kids Championship, as Girls 9-11

Finisher and Open 7-9 Finisher respectively. 7-year old Nicolette Celis, daughter of Marc Celis, was also an Open 7-9 Finisher. Their hard work and perseverance paid off as they completed the course in record time and overcame challenging obstacles.

Just as well, we got to hear from some of the proud families who participated in the competition. Namee Sunico, mom of Juliana and Sebastian Sunico, shared how she passed down her love of OCR to her kids.

“I joined Spartan back in 2019 and then sabi ko, sana there’s one for kids… Spartan Race gave them the opportunity to overcome discomfort at such a young age given na may putik, maulan, marumi, at mahirap,” shares Namee. Thanks to their family’s support, Juliana and Sebastian have grown to be determined Spartan ath-

letes, ready to take on any challenge. Similarly, the father of competitor Nicolette Celis, Marc, is proud of his daughter for not only competing on the global stage – but in the work she puts in behind the scenes as well and how OCR encouraged her to let go of her initial fear and shyness. Nicolette now sees herself as a coach and likes to help people with what to do, what workouts to exercise, and sometimes teaches obstacles as well; this is how involved she is,” adds Marc when talking of Nicolette’s consistent growth with OCR. Logan Limbo, Zach Exequiel Enriquez, and Sarayu Breeze Prudente ranked 9 (Boys 9-11), 10 (Boys 9-11), and 13 (Girls 12-14) respectively at the 2024 Kids World Championship, showing their relentless perseverance and grit to reach new heights and improve their sense of exploration through OCR.

Creamline,

Akari start

PVL title

showdown

FIRST, a power outage. Then, a tropical storm. After multiple delays, whether man-made or by nature, Akari and Creamline are finally ready to settle the score at 6 tonight (Wednesday) – a score that could very well etch their names in the annals of the Premier Volleyball League history.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for these two clubs, each chasing history in their unique style.

The knockout duel for the coveted Reinforced Conference crown comes down to a single, decisive match that could define one team’s season and cement the other’s legacy of dominance.

Originally set at the sprawling Smart Araneta Coliseum, the much-anticipated showdown has been moved to the more intimate Philsports Arena in Pasig. But for the players, the change of venue is insignificant compared to the enormity of the prize at stake.

For Akari, this match represents the culmination of a dream that once seemed far-fetched. Overcoming overwhelming odds, the Chargers now stand just one heartbeat away from claiming glory, armed with a staggering 10-game winning streak in a tournament packed with top-tier international reinforcements.

For Creamline, it’s another chance to prove that it remains the pinnacle of women’s volleyball in the Philippines, the ultimate benchmark, even without three of its star players who have been instrumental in their march to eight championships, including a conference sweep that Akari’s now eager to achieve.

The Cool Smashers have shown time and again that they can rise to any occasion, and tonight, they have a golden opportunity to do just that.

The road to the finals hasn’t been easy for either team. Both Akari and Creamline had to battle through five grueling sets in the semifinals, each match a test of endurance, skill and mental fortitude.

WITH significant playoff implications at stake, National University and De La Salle University face off in a key showdown today (Wednesday) as the V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge resumes at the Paco Arena in Manila.

The Bulldogs and the Green Spikers enter their crucial 5 p.m. matchup coming of contrasting results. NU is looking to maintain the momentum from its gritty five-set victory over Ateneo, while La Salle seeks to bounce back after suffering its first defeat in five games at the hands of the surging Far Eastern U side.

An NU victory would tie the Bulldogs with the idle UST Golden Spikers for third place, while a win for the Green Spikers would secure them an assured playoff spot and a share of the top spot with the Tamaraws.

“Yung mental toughness tsaka consistency need i-polish bago lumaban against La Salle. Kita mo naman, inconsistent sa services and attacks. Medyo kailangan pa namin linisin mga bato ng setter,” said NU assistant coach Jessie Lopez. In the men’s matchup, Perpetual Help aims to recover from a shocking five-set loss to Emilio Aguinaldo College as the Altas (2-3) face off against the Blue Eagles (1-4) in a battle

POC gifts Yulo 2 2-story homes; Petecio, Villegas get bungalows

THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has continued its tradition of rewarding Olympic medalists with house and lot gifts.

In recognition of their outstanding achievements at the Paris 2024 Olympics, gymnast Carlos Yulo, who won two gold medals, and boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, who each earned a bronze medal, have been gifted with new homes.

POC president Abraham “Bambol”

Tolentino announced on Tuesday that Yulo would receive two two-story houses on a 500-square meter lot, valued at approximately P15 million.

The homes will feature gazebos and

other amenities.

Petecio, who previously received a home for her silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will now be adding another residence in Tagaytay City.

She will be joining fellow Olympic medalists Carlos Paalam and Eumir Felix Marcial in the Olympic Village compound.

Both Petecio and Villegas will each receive a bungalow on a 200-square meter lot, complete with basic amenities.

Tolentino emphasized that these rewards are well-deserved for the athletes’ dedication, hard work, and exceptional performances on the world stage.

“It’s now a tradition, first Hidilyn Diaz [Naranjo] deserved all the best for giving the country its first Olympic gold medal and now, it’s the turn of Caloy [Yulo], Nesthy and Aira to be feted with the same reward for their historic efforts,” POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said on Tuesday.

“All the rewards and bonuses that go our medalists’ way are well-deserved, it’s not easy to medal in the Olympics, it takes years, it takes fo-

cus, discipline and determination,” Tolentino said.

“These athletes invested their lives into the sports they love and now, they’re reaping the fruits of their sacrifices,” he added.

Tolentino withheld announcing the locations of the homes, but would be turning over the keys to the medalist Olympians in a ceremony fit for champions.

“The POC doesn’t think twice about these rewards, an Olympic medal, regardless of color, is the most precious medal in sports,” said Tolentino as he thanked the POC Board for showing full gratitude to the efforts of Yulo, Petecio and Villegas.

Competing under Clube De Jiu Jitsu Filipinas, where he also serves as a coach, Baylon reached the final of the 81 kg category, where he faced off against the world’s No. 1 in his age group, Wellington Leal Dias of Gracie Humaita, Brazil.

“A true inspiration, proving that dedication has no age limits. We are proud to have you representing Clube De Jiu Jitsu Filipinas,” the club proudly stated on Facebook.

At 59, Baylon remains one of the most

decorated Filipino judokas, having dominated the Southeast Asian Games from 1991 until 2009, before his first loss in 2011, which signaled his retirement. His journey into Brazilian jiu-jitsu began in 2002 while he was still an active judoka.

Baylon’s jiu-jitsu career includes numerous accolades, such as a silver medal at the 2016 East and Southeast Asia Regionals in Hanoi, Vietnam, alongside Asian Indoor gold medalist and world champion Annie Ramirez.

Young golfers overcome adversity to reign at Malarayat

LIPA City, Batangas—Four young golfers exhibited remarkable skill and determination, emerging victorious in their respective categories at the weather-shortened ICTSI Junior PGT Series 6 at the Mount Malarayat Golf and Country Club here yesterday (Tuesday).

Despite the challenging rainy and windy conditions across the Mt. Malipunyo, Mt. Makulot, and Mt. Lobo nines,Venus delos Santos and Aerin Chan delivered outstanding performances to dominate the girls’ 8-9 and 10-12 categories, respectively. On the boys’ side, Isonn Angheng and Inigo Gallardo showcased their prowess to secure top honors in their divisions.

The (8-9 and 10-12) tournaments, reduced to an 18-hole competition due to adverse weather on Monday, saw Delos Santos carry over the momentum from her commanding victory at Luisita two weeks ago.

The nine-year-old sensation from Bulacan overcame early mistakes on the second and third holes of the Mt. Malipunyo nine, rallying with a stunning run of five birdies starting from the fourth hole, ultimately seizing full control. Delos Santos added another birdie on the 14th (No. 5 of Mt. Makulot) before closing out with

back-to-back birdies to finish with a remarkable 67. Kamilla Del Mundo from Makati placed second with a 77, while Athena Serapio from Sampaloc finished third with a 79.

“The wind and rain affected my game, especially my driving, but I was totally surprised to shoot five-under,” said Delos Santos from San Rafael. “I didn’t expect it because I’m just nine years old and still figuring out my yardage. So I’m very proud of my game.”

Chan continued her winning streak with a 77, securing a seven-stroke victory over Maurysse Abalos, who shot an 84. Quincy Pilac came in third with a 90, while Georgina Handog (93) and Casedy Cuenca (97) struggled in the tough conditions at the all-weather layout.

Chan’s third consecutive leg victory in the Luzon swing of the nationwide series, organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc., strengthened her bid for a spot in the Match Play Championship.

The top four players in each age division, based on their best four performances, will qualify for the national finals set for Oct. 1-4 at The Country Club in Laguna.

“The cancellation worked to my advantage because it gave me more rest time, and I was able to practice a lot without feeling too tired,” said Chan. “I also focused on having fun and living in the moment.”

In the boys’ 8-9 category, Angheng continued his winning ways, carding an 82 to secure a five-shot victory over Axton Gonzales (87). Jesus Yambao finished third with a 99. “The tough conditions really affected my game,” said Angheng, a nine-year-old homeschooled golfer who trains at the challenging Camp John Hay Golf Club. Gallardo, on the other hand, delivered a dramatic victory in the boys’ 10-12 category, rallying under both rain and shine to clinch the title with a clutch birdie on the final hole of Mt. Makulot, edging out Javie Bautista by a single stroke with a 75.

“I didn’t expect to win; I just came here to play for my family. But my driving was on point, my chipping clicked, and my putting saved me a lot of upsand-downs,” said Gallardo from Ateneo, who drained a 15-foot downhill putt on the 18th to secure the victory.

THE national government’s outstanding debt climbed by P145 trillion, or 10.1 percent, to reach a record P15.69 trillion ($292 billion) at the end of July 2024 from P14.24 trillion a year earlier.

Data from the National Treasury

show the debt portfolio increased by P206.49 billion, or 1.3 percent, from P15.48 trillion at the end of June, mainly due to net issuances of domestic and foreign debt.

It said of the total debt, 68.54 percent was domestic debt and 31.46 percent was foreign debt.

Domestic debt in July was P10.75 trillion, up 1.7 percent from the previous month and 9.6 percent from a year earlier.

The increase was primarily due to net issuances of government securities, partially offset by a downward revaluation effect of

the peso’s appreciation against the US dollar on dollar-denominated domestic securities, according to the Treasury. It said that since the end of December 2023, domestic debt has risen by P735.22 billion or 7.3 percent. Foreign debt amounted to P4.94 trillion ($92 billion) in July, up 0.5 percent from the end of June and 11.4 percent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to net availments of project loans and a third-currency upward revaluation, partially offset by the impact of the peso’s appreciation

against the US dollar.

The Treasury said that since the beginning of the year, foreign debt has increased by P338.50 billion ($6.3 billion) or 7.4 percent. The government’s guaranteed obligations rose 0.3 percent to P344.79 billion ($6.4 billion) at the end of July.

The increase was primarily due to third-currency adjustments against the US dollar, which outweighed reductions from domestic and foreign net repayments and a downward revaluation from the peso’s appreciation.

Total agricultural trade hit $6.80 billion in the quarter, up by 14.3 percent from a year ago. The PSA said agricultural export revenue climbed 14.7 percent in the second quarter from $1.62 billion a year ago. Agricultural exports accounted for 10.2 percent of the total

Philippines exports. Among the commodity groups, edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons amounted to $543.62 million, representing 29.2 percent of the total agricultural exports in the second quarter.

Agricultural exports to ASEAN member countries in the second quarter amounted to $227.24 million, which accounted for 8.8 percent of the total value of exports to ASEAN member countries. Among the ASEAN member countries, Malaysia was the top buyer of agricultural exports worth $95.22 million.

Exports of agricultural goods to EU member countries in the second quarter hit $358.93 million, which contributed 18.6 percent to the country’s total value of exports to EU member countries. Among the EU member countries, Netherlands was the country’s top destination of agricultural commodities worth $179.77 million. Meanwhile, agricultural imports rose 14.1 percent in the second quarter to $4.94 billion. Cereals accounted for the largest share worth $1.28 billion or 26.0 percent of the total value of agricultural imports in the second quarter.

AVERAGE system-wide rates at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) declined in August 2024 by 0.4

Agricultural imports from ASEAN member countries in the second quarter amounted to $1.86 billion or 19.9 percent. In terms of value, Vietnam was the leading supplier of agricultural products to the Philippines among ASEAN member countries, contributing $686.60 million.

Agricultural imports from EU member countries amounted to $450.29 million. Among EU member countries, Spain was the country’s top supplier of agricultural commodities with an import value of $122.27 million.

THE Supreme Court denied with finality an appeal filed by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) against a rate hike petition by San Miguel Corp.’s subsidiaries and Manila Electric Co.

SMC said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange Tuesday it received a copy of the Supreme Court’s First Division resolution on Sept. 2 through its legal counsel. The ruling rejected the ERC’s motion for reconsideration of an earlier decision and its request for a temporary restraining order or writ of preliminary injunction.

“Considering that there is no substantial argument to warrant a modification of this court’s resolution, the court further resolved to deny reconsideration with finality,” the Supreme Court said.

The high court’s decision affirms a Court of Appeals ruling that upheld SMC’s right to invoke a “change in circumstance” clause in its power supply agreements.

ERC chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta said the agency had not yet received a copy of the decision and would consult with the Office of the Solicitor General.

BDO expanded its board-approved SFF to include gender financing and 19 additional eligible categories under green, blue, orange and social financing that are aligned with international and local bond principles, guidelines and taxonomies as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The expanded SFF will allow BDO to finance more projects with high economic, environmental and social benefits through its bond issuances, contributing to ecological sustainability, ocean, health, community development and women’s empowerment.

The bank’s previous ASEAN sustainability bond issuances have both set records as the largest issuance for any Philippine financial institution or company at P52.7 billion in 2022 and at P63.3 billion in January 2024.

BDO concluded its third ASEAN sustainable bond issuance on July 16, 2024 at P55.7 billion. The offer period, originally scheduled to end July 19, was cut short due to strong demand from both institutional and retail investors. These guidelines will enable the BARMM to receive foreign assistance for projects and programs that support its inclusive development.

Gov’t to update electric vehicle roadmap, perks

THE government plans to strengthen the electric vehicle incentives strategy (EVIS) starting with an updated roadmap that will be issued this month.

Patrick Aquino, director of Energy Utilization Management Bureau (EUMB), said the DOE would release a more relevant Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI).

“Since 2023, we’ve gathered feedback from players, and from this, we intend to craft a more responsive roadmap that will hasten the implementation of EVIDA [Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act],” he said in a pre-event briefing Tuesday for the upcoming EV Summit in October.

The roadmap will focus on beefing up the infrastructure required to accelerate the adoption of EVs such the deployment of more charging stations nationwide.

Aquino said while there was a pushback in terms of infrastructure development for at least half a year, “we are coming out with a draft this or in the next quarter to hasten the placement of charging stations.”

“As you know, there are more EV units coming here compared to the number of charging stations. We don’t have the critical mass to support the increasing population of EVs,” he said. He said industry figures reported by automotive groups do not tally with the registration records of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), which is crucial to determining the accuracy of EV units to a charging station.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) came up with a draft proposal on the proposed incentives to the EVIS that involve trigger production volume for fiscal incentives, and other support mechanisms to drive the industry.

The EVIS is open to at least one proponent with the capacity to locally manufacture 2-wheeled, 3-wheeled and platform vehicles for public transportation. Othel V. Campos

(BOL) to deal with revenue imbalances and fluctuations in the regional financial needs and revenueraising capacity of the BARMM.

“With these ODA guidelines, we are equipping the BARMM with the tools needed to shape its future and write its own success story. This unlocks limitless opportunities for the BARMM––from infrastructure development to socioeconomic programs that create jobs, boost incomes, and lift communities out of poverty,” Recto said.

“Beyond financing, this will provide the BARMM with access to knowledge, technology transfers, capacity-building and a wealth of experience from experts and development partners around the world,” he said.

Pursuant to the BOL, the ODA guidelines authorize the Bangsamoro government to contract loans, in cash or in kind, from governments of foreign countries, their agencies and instrumentalities or multilateral institutions or organizations.

Under the guidelines, the Bangsamoro govern-

ment can take out loans to finance investment, social and economic development projects for the welfare of the people of the Bangsamoro, provided that ODAs should only be used in the absence of other financial instruments in the capital market and that it must contain a grant element of 25 percent.

Meanwhile, ODA funds cannot be used for telephone programs, projects required by law to be handled by the private sector, or for financing private corporations that have access to commercial credit.

The guidelines also detail the Bangsamoro government’s instrumentalities that may be involved in the ODA loan process, the pertinent documents for technical and financial evaluation, as well as the procedure for the approval of ODA loans to the BARMM in coordination with the national government, With the ODA guidelines in place, Recto expressed confidence in the Bangsamoro government’s ability to leverage opportunities, harness concessional ODAs effectively and manage partnerships with utmost prudence and foresight.

Filipino brands sign P750-m franchise deals in Australia

FILIPINO franchises booked P750 million worth of agreements in a recent trade exposition in Australia.

Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) chairman Sherill Quintana said six Filipino franchises struck deals with interested groups during the Melbourne expo. These included Avocadoria, Bench, Cabalen, Miguelitos Ice Cream, Oryspa and Shawarma Shack.

DragonFi launches new stock trading feature at Maya

DRAGONFI, the stock brokerage arm of businessmen Edgar Sia II and Tony Tan Caktiong, said Tuesday it launched DragonFi Lite, a new feature within the Maya app that makes stock trading in the Philippines easy and accessible.

DragonFi chief executive and co-founder Jon Carlo Lim said in a statement DragonFi Lite is a “gamechanger for stock trading in the Philippines” as it offers zero minimum deposit and no fees for cash in and cash out transactions.

“By offering no minimum deposits and no fees for cash-ins, we’re opening up investment opportunities for all Filipinos,” Lim said DragonFi teamed up with Maya app for the offering.

“Partnering with Maya, the leading digital banking app with over 50 million users, underscores our dedication to providing a seamless investing experience. This initiative specifically targets Maya users who are new to investing, addressing the fact that only 1.8% of the total working population currently invests in Philippine stocks. We’re excited to help people grow their wealth,” Lim said.

Other key features of DragonFi Lite include real-time digital account opening, which allows an investor to set up an account as fast as 15 minutes and start trading immediately. Meanwhile, the trade anytime feature gives investors with busy schedules the benefit from the flexibility of after-hours order.

DragonFi Lite is a streamlined version of the DragonFi 2.0 mobile app, specifically tailored for Maya users keen on exploring stock trading.

“The launch of DragonFi Lite marks a pivotal moment in our mission to expand our user base through strategic partnerships. By collaborating with Maya, we are making investing accessible to a broader audience, solidifying our commitment to financial inclusion in the Philippines,” Sia said.

PFA president Christopher Lim said it while it might take a while before commitments materialize, “we are hoping to see them built on brick and mortar, next year.”

The group and several established franchises are gearing up for market visits to Canada and Singapore in the coming weeks to further promote Philippine brands.

They are also set to participate in Fine Food Australia 2024 this week.

Seoul shipyard starts US Navy vessel repair

SEOUL – A South Korean shipyard started providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for a US Navy vessel on Tuesday, the first time Seoul has been able to undertake this sensitive work.

The United States has begun looking for overseas shipyards for its navy to use as concerns rise over the expansion of China’s fleet and potential conflicts in the Taiwan Strait. Under current protocols, war-damaged American ships must return to facilities in US territory for repairs.

The US government has long considered localizing repair operations to shipyards closer to conflict zones as it could significantly hasten the vessels’ return to active duty. AFP

Cathay inspects A350 after engine failure

HONG KONG – Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific has temporarily grounded its fleet of A350 aircraft for inspections after a “first of its type” engine component failure forced a flight to Zurich to turn back on Monday. Cathay is conducting fleet-wide inspection of its 48 Airbus A350 aircraft and “a number of aircraft will be out of service for several days”, the airline said in a statement Monday night. The airline has canceled 24 return flights up until the end of Tuesday, it added.

Eight of Cathay’s nine flights from Hong Kong to Singapore on Tuesday were axed, according to the airline’s website. Flights to Bangkok, Tokyo, Taipei and Osaka were canceled as well. AFP

China schoolbus hits children’s crowd

BEIJING – A public school bus plowed into a crowd of children outside a school in eastern China on Tuesday leaving at least 10 dead or injured, state media reported, citing local authorities.

State news agency Xinhua said the pupils had been standing outside the entrance to a middle school in Shandong province’s Tai’an city when the incident occurred at 7 am.

“At present, more than 10 students have been killed or injured”, Xinhua reported, without giving specific information. Photos on social media showed adults kneeling over children in blood-soaked clothes lying in the road next to a hulking grey bus.

AFP was not immediately able to independently verify the authenticity of the photos, some of which later appeared to have been removed. AFP

Hand in hand: Biden, Harris hit campaign trail to attract voters in key battleground

PITTSBURGH – US President Joe

Biden and Kamala Harris campaigned together for the first time Monday (Tuesday Manila time), in a public display of teamwork after she replaced him as candidate and revived Democratic election hopes. Seeking to attract voters in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania, the pair met union members in Pittsburg before standing side-by-side to speak to about 600 supporters.

Biden repeatedly name-checked Vice President Harris, who is in a close race to beat Donald Trump to the White House on Nov. 5.

“We have made a lot of progress, and Kamala and I are going to build on that progress, and she’s going to build on it,” Biden said.

“I’ll be on the sidelines, but I’ll do everything I can to help.”

The Labor Day event at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union underlined how Biden will play a role in the campaign in the final months before the vote.

Biden, 81, initially resisted bowing out of the presidential race after his disastrous debate performance against Trump, but he has since swung behind Harris, 59.

“There’s only one person you have a rational choice with this time -- that’s Kamala Harris,” he said to cheers.

“I know her. I trust her,” he added.

Pope lands in Muslim-majority Indonesia for Asia-Pacific tour

JAKARTA – Pope Francis arrived in Muslim-majority Indonesia on Tuesday to kick off a four-nation tour of the Asia-Pacific that will be the longest and farthest of the 87-year-old’s papacy.

The head of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics touched down in Jakarta for a three-day visit devoted to inter-religious ties, and will then travel to Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.

The 12-day tour will test the pontiff’s increasingly fragile health, but he is often energized by being among his flock and in recent weeks has appeared in good spirits.

The pope was due to have a relaxing day in Jakarta on Tuesday following the long flight from Rome, then meet President Joko Widodo on Wednesday in the first major set piece of his visit to the world’s most populous Muslimmajority country.

Catholics currently represent fewer than three percent of the population of Indonesia -- about eight million people, compared with the 87 percent, or 242 million, who are Muslim.

But they are one of six officially recognized religions or denominations in the secular nation, including Protestantism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism.

On Thursday, Francis will meet representatives of all six at Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia and a symbol of religious co-existence.

It is linked via a “tunnel of friendship” to the cathedral across the road, where Christians in recent days have

been taking selfies with a life-sized cutout of the pope.

He will then host a mass and deliver a sermon at Indonesia’s 80,000-seater national football stadium.

Despite Indonesia’s official recognition of different faiths, there are concerns about growing discrimination, including against Christians, with local Catholics hoping the pope will speak out.

But Michel Chambon, a theologian and anthropologist at the National University of Singapore, said the pope would press a wider message he had already delivered in other Muslim-majority countries, from Iraq to Bahrain, Turkey and Morocco.

The visit “is not really aimed at Catholics in Indonesia” but is intended to highlight the global importance of IslamicChristian dialogue, he told AFP. That message was already being felt by some in Jakarta.

“When there’s an event like this, we enjoy it because when it’s our religious events, they (Catholics) also show tolerance to us,” said Ranggi Prathita, a 34-year-old Muslim who has been selling customized Pope t-shirts.

“We all respect each other.”

The country’s religious affairs ministry has also hailed the visit as a symbol of Indonesia’s religious diversity.

“It is very important in conveying a message and showing the world that religious harmony in Indonesia is guaranteed and has been implemented,” ministry spokesman Sunanto, who goes by one name, said Monday, state news agency Antara reported.

At the Istiqlal Mosque, Pope Francis will sign a joint declaration with its grand imam that will focus on “dehumanization,” notably the spread of violence and conflict, as well as environmental degradation, according to the Indonesian bishops’ conference. AFP

Pressure from home, overseas builds up on Israel’s PM Netanyahu over Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM – International and domestic pressure has mounted on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as US President Joe Biden said he was not doing enough to secure the release of Gaza hostages, after the killing of six captives.

Britain said it would suspend some arms exports to Israel, citing a “clear risk” they could be used in a serious breach of international humanitarian law.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant posted on X that he was “deeply disheartened” by London’s decision which he said came “when we mourn 6 hostages who were executed in cold blood by Hamas inside tunnels in Gaza”.

At a televised press conference, Netanyahu said he sought forgiveness for fail-

ing to save the six.

“I ask for your forgiveness for not bringing them back alive,” he said.

“We were close but we didn’t succeed. Hamas will pay a very heavy price for this.”

“These murderers executed six of our hostages, they shot them in the back of the head,” he said, rejecting the idea that Israel should respond with “concessions” in Gaza ceasefire talks.

Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said remaining hostages would return “inside coffins” if Israel maintains its military pressure on Gaza.

A statement said “new instructions” had been given to militants guarding the captives on what to do if Israeli troops approached. AFP

Putin in Mongolia under cloud of war crimes charges, with calls for his arrest

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia – Russian President Vladimir Putin was in Mongolia for an official visit on Tuesday, his first to an International Criminal Court member since it issued a warrant for his arrest last year.

Putin was welcomed by an honor guard as he landed in Ulaanbaatar the night before to begin the high-profile trip, seen as a show of defiance against the court, Kyiv, the West and rights groups that have all called for him to be detained.

The Russian leader is wanted by the Hague-based court for the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children since his troops invaded the country in 2022.

Ukraine has reacted to the trip with

fury, accusing Mongolia of “sharing responsibility” for Putin’s “war crimes” after authorities did not detain him at the airport.

Kyiv had urged Mongolia to execute the arrest warrant, while the ICC said last week all its members had an “obligation” to detain those sought by the court. In practice, there is little that can be done if Ulaanbaatar does not comply. A vibrant democracy situated between authoritarian giants Russia and China, Mongolia enjoys close cultural links to Moscow as well as a critical trading relationship with Beijing. It was under Moscow’s sway during the Soviet era. AFP

ON Sunday afternoon, we had a tête-à-tête with Piolo Pascual. The conversation was so candid that he even touched on looking young despite his age and how a positive mindset contributes to it.

Pascual shared his gratitude for continuing to land numerous assignments and emphasized that he’s not overly picky. He seeks roles in projects that resonate with him and make a meaningful impact. One such project is Pamilya Sagrado, which is set to premiere its second chapter on Sept. 9.

“It makes me feel grateful that I’m given opportunities. The challenges you take on bring you to greater heights without you even expecting it. It’s a matter of going for it, being humble, and giving your 100 percent,” he said.

Pascual expressed pride in the show’s success and praised his fellow actors for their dedication to their roles. Kyle Echarri and Grae Fernandez have been recognized by viewers as rising stars due to their exceptional performances.

“I’ve never been this invested in a show. Playing this character has been both challenging and a milestone for my career. I’m thrilled to see the growth of my co-stars, Kyle and Grae. They truly owned their roles,” Pascual said.

Working with these young stars is somewhat nostalgic for the “Ultimate Heartthrob,” who sees himself in them.

“Whenever I work with senior stars, I still get starstruck. I’m in awe that sometimes I forget my lines. That’s how I was,” he said.

“The commitment they have is evident in their eyes. I believe age knows no bounds when it comes to brilliance in acting,” he added.

According to Pascual, he has already portrayed numerous roles, but one of his dream projects is working on a biopic. He is currently developing a film about the colorful life of former police chief and current Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong

“Well, I’m working on a Magalong project. I’m sorry, I’m not supposed to disclose it. So I spoke with Mayor Magalong, and we’re interested in making a movie about his life. So that’s in the pipeline,” the 47-year-old actor revealed.

Another consistent plan he has is to portray the life of former President Ferdinand Marcos. He grew up in Malacañang because his mother worked there for a long time.

“Since I grew up during the Marcos era when my mom was working in Malacañang for 19 years, that was my environment growing up. So I’m a Marcos baby. I want to provide our audience with something they haven’t seen growing up or give them insight into a person. So nothing political, no political agenda whatsoever,” emphasized the award-winning actor.

Meanwhile, Pascual also looks forward to working with Judy Ann Santos again, saying, “I’ll drop everything for her. I mean, I owe her so much, and I miss working with her. If I’m given a chance, anytime, in a heartbeat,”

Fans of the actress are still hoping they will work together again. “I’m also expecting it, one of these days. I learned so much from her.”

As for the genre he envisions: “I’d like it to be something like Tagos Sa Dugo. Something crime-related, thriller, suspense, psychological

drama. Not a rom-com.” This was starred in by Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos-Recto in 1987.

When asked why it seems to be taking time for them to work together again, Pascual candidly replied, “Not me, ask her, hahaha! I’m open.”

New Chapter As Pamilya Sagrado begins this new chapter, viewers can anticipate dramatic developments, including President Rafael (Pascual) discovering that Moises (Echarri) is his biological son and escalating tensions between Moises and Justin (Fernandez).

The upcoming chapter will also feature Coco Martin as a special guest director. The series airs weeknights at 9:30 p.m. on Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, TV5, Kapamilya Online Live, and TFC. It streams 48 hours before the TV broadcast on iWantTFC and is available ondemand for up to 21 days after initial streaming on Kapamilya Online Live on YouTube. Digital TV box users can rescan their devices to access the show on TV5 and A2Z.

Pamilya Sagrado is also available internationally on iWantTFC and The Filipino Channel (TFC) via cable and IPTV. Additionally, a

Korea Travel Fiesta brings K-pop and K-culture to Makati

Korea Tourism Organization (KTO)

Manila Office will host the Korea Travel Fiesta 2024 on Sept. 7 and 8 in Makati City to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and South Korea.

The event will take place at the Glorietta Activity Center and Palm Drive Activity Center from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. each

The two-day celebration will highlight South Korea’s tourism and culture, offering activities such as trying on traditional Hanbok and Korean school uniforms, writing in Hangeul, and dancing to K-pop hits.

Visitors can also take advantage of exclusive discounts on flights and tour packages, including a $75 discount on Xiumin from EXO and Korean OST singer Punch will headline the opening ceremony on Sept. 7.

Additional performances by WOLF’LO, a K-dance team from Street Woman Fighter 2, CHEF, a K-performance group, are scheduled throughout the event.

Other highlights include special event appearances by Melai Cantiveros-Francisco, KTO’s Honorary Ambassador for Korea Family Tourism in the Philippines, at the Family Travel Talk Running Man Philippines celebrity Glaiza De Castro, Kokoy De Santos, guesting at the Korea Winter

The festivities will conclude with a Closing Ceremony featuring the popular Filipino

through a series of games.

The K-pop idol wasn’t EXO’s vocalist for nothing, as he showed off his vocals by singing some of the requested songs from fans, including “Hawak Kamay,” some of the group’s songs like “Lotto,” “Christmas Day,” and “El Dorado,” and English tracks such as “Call Me When It’s Over,” “Billionaire,” and “Fly Me to the

Moon.” If you think he was done serenading his fans, you’re wrong; before leaving the stage for the second part of the show, Kyungsoo sang “Simple Joys” and “That’s Okay.”

After a promotional video was shown, he returned to the stage, singing “I Do” and “My Dear” before interacting again with his fans.

One of the most memorable moments of the night for me was when Kyungsoo performed one of my favorite songs of his—“Ordinary Days.” Hearing it live almost brought tears to my eyes, as it was a comfort song I listened to when I felt sad. He later performed more of his songs, such as “Good Night,” “About Time,” and “Somebody.”

A concert wouldn’t be called a concert without the “encore,” a term used for an additional performance from an artist requested by the audience. This also meant that the event was about to end.

As the concert drew to a close, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude that I got to meet and see Kyungsoo perform in my homeland. He delivered his last performance of the night, “Popcorn,” and left us with a promise to return.

AYALA Museum is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Diorama Experience, a permanent exhibit showcasing 60 scenes from Philippine history, with the introduction of nextgeneration augmented reality (AR) technology.

The enhancement which is part of the museum’s “We Have History” campaign, aims to make learning about the country’s past more engaging for modern audiences.

Visitors can now interact with 27 of the Dioramas through AR, adding animation, music, and narration to the historical scenes. The new AR experience requires only a smartphone and an internet connection, making it more accessible than the earlier version introduced in the 2010s, which required special glasses.

“The Dioramas have captivated generations since they were first introduced after World War II,” said Mariles Gustilo, senior director of Ayala Museum. “This AR upgrade reflects our commitment to keeping the exhibit relevant and

inspiring for future generations.”

In addition to the AR update, Ayala Museum is hosting an exhibition titled The Historical Imagination: The Making of the Diorama Experience until Oct. 27. The exhibit delves into the creation of the Dioramas and features photographs from the Filipinas Heritage Library’s Retrato Collection.

A new book, edited by Dr. Michael Pante, exploring the historical narratives depicted in the Dioramas, will also be released in October to coincide with Museum and Galleries Month.

“The Dioramas originally offered a novel way to present Philippine history,” said Tony Lambino, president of Ayala Foundation.

“With the new AR experience, accompanying exhibition, and upcoming book, we continue our mission of telling the Filipino story in ways that resonate with today’s audience.” Ayala Foundation oversees Ayala Museum as part of its Arts and Culture Division.

Accenture tops PBCWE Gender Equality Assessment

THE PHILIPPINE Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (PBCWE) announced that Accenture in the Philippines has achieved leading practice results in all 12 Focus Areas (FAs) of the GEARS (Gender Equality Assessment, Results, and Strategies) assessment, obtaining top marks in each focus area. Accenture in the Philippines is the first member company of PBCWE to achieve this milestone. The GEARS assessment is a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to measure a company’s performance in various aspects of Workplace Gender Equality (WGE) and

Tribally expands play-to-earn gaming to PH

LONDON-based gaming startup Tribally is transforming the play-to-earn (P2E) industry with an innovative model that prioritizes sustainable rewards and enhances player experience.

Tribally is a social network built for gamers, fostering a vibrant community and an “attention economy” where players can monetize the value they generate. $TRIBAL, the platform’s native token, serves as a key element, unlocking exclusive perks, powering social features like P2P betting, and allowing users to stake their tokens for a share of the network’s growth.

Tribally’s innovative P2E system introduces “wagers,” a unique mechanism that allows players to amplify their earnings while maintaining the integrity of ingame economies. By using $TRIBAL, and $USDC as wager currencies, players earn a percentage commission on all wagers placed. This revenue is strategically distributed where a portion goes directly to the players, another supports the game’s ecosystem, and the remainder sustains Tribally’s peer-to-peer (P2P) wagering service, creating a mutually beneficial “win-winwin” scenario. Since its launch in November 2023, Tribally’s gaming platform has seen impressive growth, attracting 70,000 active gamers by the end of July 2024.

“Unlike traditional P2E games, where rewards are often directly tied to in-game economies, Tribally’s wager system offers a more sustainable approach. By abstracting rewards from the game’s economy, Tribally ensures that players earn based on the overall betting volume. This helps to sustain the value of rewards as more players join the ecosystem on gaming tokens and promotes a fairer distribution of rewards,” Tribally CEO David “Best” deVilder said.

Tribally’s market analyst “Indes” revealed that the majority of their players, supporters, and even team members are from the Philippines, making it a strategic focus for the company.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

“We congratulate Accenture in the Philippines for this outstanding achievement,” said Julia Abad, Executive Director of PBCWE. Their top marks across all GEARS focus areas demonstrate their dedication to creating a workplace where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed and their commitment to promote gender equality, diversity, equity, and inclusion within its more than 85,000-strong organization.

This serves as an inspiration to us and other PBCWE member companies in striving to make a positive impact in their workplaces and beyond.”

Accenture in the Philippines’ performance in the GEARS assessment highlights several key initiatives and practices that have contributed to their success:

Comprehensive Gender Equality Policies: Accenture in the Philippines implements robust policies that support WGE and DEI including setting and achieving gender balance goals in their workforce; supporting gender pay parity, anti-discrimination measures, flexible working arrangements, and accessible workplace practices.

Diverse and Inclusive Leadership: The

company prioritizes building an inclusive environment, ensuring individuals from diverse segments including women, men LGBTQIA+, persons with disabilities, cultural and ethnic identities, among others, are represented across all levels of the organization.

Inclusive Culture: Accenture in the Philippines promotes an inclusive workplace culture through training programs, awareness campaigns, and employee resource groups that support every individual regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, religion, or sexual orientation.

“Abigail Marquez has been crowned the Lumpia Queen for her obsession with one Philippine fried snack, but she promotes all aspects of her nation’s food culture, a passion she has had since the age of 4,” Forbes Asia wrote. “Marquez trained as a chef before moving into videography, and now runs a cooking channel on TikTok with more than 3 million followers. She won TikTok’s Creator of the Year for Food award in 2023—after less than 2 years on the platform.” Marquez is one of seven Filipinos recognized by Forbes this year, alongside content creator Arshie Larga, rapper Ez Mil, entrepreneurs Amanda Cua and Mikaela Helene Reyes, and artists Joshua Serafin and Chia Amisola. Their collective achievement underscores the rich talent pool in the Philippines and serves as an inspiration to young creators and entrepreneurs worldwide.

And we want our kids to enjoy the sport as much as we do.” When her family moved to Boracay she was just as happy to be amongst fellow players. “The ultimate games are a big thing in Boracay. I was surprised because they are very competitive. They have been fielding teams to compete in France Dubai, and London and they have been winning.” In 2023, they decided to join the Ultimate Beach Championship in California. The entire island witnessed the

since the Philippines will field different teams, the kids were included.” With the cooperation of parents, friends, and relatives, the Island Kids team was officially formed composed of kids from Boracay and Iloilo. “We made sure that they played every day and coordinated who among the parents would be available to train them.
