NO ABUSES, FAVORITISM IN MARCOS GOV’T—RODY

SAYS ADMINISTRATION RUNNING ‘IN A REGULAR WAY’

FORMER President Rodrigo Duterte said he has not seen abuses or favoritism under the Marcos administration, noting that he has no criticism of governance policies at this point.

“Marcos doesn’t have abuses. For as long as he maintains this attitude, it’s okay,” Duterte said during Friday night’s assembly of PDP-Laban in Davao City.

“I think that I can live with him.

I can bend with him...For as long as the government is running in a regular way, we have no problem,”

he added.

Duterte said he has not reached a tipping point where he would criticize Mr. Marcos.

“I don’t have any qualms against Marcos for me to speak out and say, ‘Mr. President, I do not agree with you. Mr. President, you are wrong. And Mr. President, you stop

because that will not benefit the country.’ I have not reached that point,” the former President said.

His daughter, however, recently severed ties with the President following her resignation from the Marcos Cabinet as Education Secretary.

Vice President Sara Duterte, amid a House hearing on alleged misuse by her office of millions of pesos in funds for socio-economic programs, vowed to “never again” team up with the Marcoses following their falling out.

“We were not friends to begin with. We just knew each other because we became running mates. Prior to that we were not talking to each other,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Duterte patriarch expressed confidence in the strength of the PDP-Laban in the 2025 midterm elections in the face of a possible showdown with the administration’s Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas.

“All the parties are there (at Bagong Pilipinas) and all those parties will dissolve at the end of Marcos’ term. While we at PDP, we have already been tested. That’s the truth,” he said.

PDP-Laban on Friday officially nominated Senators Bong Go and Ronald dela Rosa as well as actor Philip Salvador as its senatorial bets for the 2025 polls.

Go and Dela Rosa are both up for reelection.

PAOCC TRACES YANG, GUO TIES TO CHINESE SYNDICATE WEB

million.

“We are looking at transactions which show they (Tony Yang and Guo) have links. It is not just one or two (coincidental) transactions,” Cruz said.

Tony Yang is the older brother Michael Yang, Duterte’s ex-adviser who has been linked to allegedly illegal POGO activities and drug operations, as well as to the Pharmally scandal involving

allegedly overpriced COVID-19 medical supplies sold to the government during Duterte’s term.

The elder Yang is also suspected of being involved in smuggling drugs and facilitating illegal POGOs in Cagayan de Oro City, as well as in Bamban, Tarlac, and Porac, Pampanga.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) told legislators it has frozen the assets of Guo amounting to P816.9

AMLC lawyer Adrian Arpon said the assets include bank accounts, corporation shares, real properties and personal properties, such as motor vehicles and a helicopter.

He said 88 principal bank accounts and 90 related accounts were targeted by the freeze order.

“The total peso equivalent that was frozen was more than P199 million,” he said.

THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the death toll climbed to 25 due to the tropical cyclones Ferdie, Gener, Helen, and Igme and the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” as of Saturday.

In its situational report, the NDRRMC said 10 fatalities were recorded in Mimaropa, five in Western Visayas, two in Central Visayas, four in Zamboanga Peninsula, and four in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Additionally, 13 individuals were

reported injured (three confirmed and 10 pending validation), while eight were reported missing (six confirmed and two pending validation).

A total of 1,449,333 people, or 387,755 families, have been affected. Of these, 5,783 families, totaling 23,512 individuals, sought shelter in 199 evacuation centers. Meanwhile, 2,345 houses were damaged, with 349 completely destroyed, mainly in the Western Visayas. Agricultural losses are estimated at P600.83 million, while infrastructure damage is around P22.57 million.

LENI CRITICIZED FOR HOUR-LONG MEETING WITH VP SARA IN NAGA

FORMER Vice President Leni Ro -

bredo was criticized for meeting with Vice President Sara Duterte for an hour in Naga City on Friday.

In a post on X, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV said it was a “wrong” move on Robredo’s part to accept Duterte’s request for a meeting. He reminded Robredo about how Duterte was rude to their ally, Senator Risa Hontiveros.

“Ma’am Leni, we even want VP Sara impeached. She was rude to Senator Risa. Why did you meet with her? Are you siding with her?” he said.

“However you looked at it, that meeting was wrong,”Trillanes added. Robredo’s former spokesman Barry Gutierrez said the visit was “personal and not political.”

“VP Leni was informed of the visit only minutes before when she was told that VP Sara was already on the way. The visit lasted for about an hour,” he said.

In a separate statement, the OVP said it was Duterte’s first time to experience the Peñafrancia fiesta as per the invitation of a Bicolano friend.

“The same friend also arranged a casual meeting with former Vice President Leni Robredo. During her stay in Naga, Vice President Duterte visited several prominent Bicol personalities and heard mass with ordinary Bicolanos. She neither looked desperate nor distressed,” the OVP said.

On Saturday, Robredo was also visited by Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos and Senator Bong Revilla.

“During the Peñafrancia, there are no political colors. Everyone is politically neutral. Everyone who visits for ‘Ina’ is welcome here with us. Ever since my husband became mayor in 1988, it had always been like this. Every time a guest goes to Naga with the intent of visiting ‘Ina,’ he or she is very much welcome here,” Robredo said.

A total of seven municipalities have since declared a state of calamity. Tropical Depression Igme exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) early Saturday. Ferdie left PAR on September 14, while Gener and Helen exited on September 18. The cyclones intensified the southwest monsoon, resulting in widespread rainfall.

Four dams in Luzon – Ambuklao and Binga in Benguet; Magat which is located between Ifugao and Isabela; and Ipo in Bulacan – already opened gates and released water, the state weather bureau said.

NEW COAST GUARD SHIP

NOW NEAR ESCODA SHOAL

THE ship that the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed to replace BRP Teresa Magbanua is now moving closer to Escoda Shoal,  the National Maritime Council (NMC) said.

NMC Undersecretary and spokesperson Alexander Lopez confirmed this development during a news forum in Quezon City, stating the Philippines is now covering not just Sabina Shoal but other territorial areas in the West Philippine Sea.

“What is clear, our position is that we have already sailed an asset of the Philippine government to replace or cover the Sabina Shoal,” Lopez said.

The maritime council official noted the ship had not faced any harassment from Chinese militia or other hostile forces so far: “So far nothing. There has been no report that we have been harassed.”

The BRP Teresa Magbanua was withdrawn after five months due to concerns about its seaworthiness and dwindling. It had been stationed at Escoda Shoal since April amid reports of Chinese reclamation activities.

Escoda Shoal, also called Sabina Shoal, is 75 nautical miles off Palawan, well within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

China has urged the Philippines to remove the BRP Teresa Magbanua, claiming its presence violates Chinese sovereignty.

Earlier, the PCG reported that is has sent a ship to Escoda Shoal as a replacement for the BRP Teresa Magbanua.

AI EXPERTS SAY VIDEO SHOWING

USING ILLEGAL DRUGS DEEPFAKE

EXPERTS in digital media and artificial intelligence (AI) have debunked the authenticity of a viral video in July that depicted President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. using illegal drugs, Acting Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez said.

The Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU), part of the India-based Misinformation Combat Alliance, found the video that circulated a day before the President’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA) had been heavily manipulated. Independent fact-checking organization Vera Files verified the results, confirming that the video was a deepfake designed to discredit the President.

Chavez said the findings cleared Mr. Marcos of the malicious accusations and warned the public to remain cautious of fake content online.

Previously, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) dismissed the video’s authenticity

shortly after it surfaced. Video spectral analysis conducted by both agencies showed that key facial features, such as the tragal notch and antitragus, did not match the President’s.

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center (CICC) said it is taking a multi-pronged approach to address the growing number of online crimes in the Philippines, particularly scams, according to CICC Director Alex Ramos.

During a news forum in Quezon City on Saturday, Ramos emphasized the role of the SIM card registration law, enacted in 2022 to hold individuals accountable for criminal activities conducted through prepaid SIM cards.

Before the law was passed, law enforcement agencies had limited capabilities in tracing perpetrators using prepaid SIM cards.

“So the SIM card registration was implemented to remind everyone that we have accountability when we use technology like cell phones with SIM cards. We’re responsible for this, okay? It means it’s for personal use,” Ramos said.

DELA ROSA TOLD: COME FORWARD AND CLARIFY ACCUSATIONS

INSTEAD of accusing the House leadership of playing politics, House Deputy Majority Leader Jude Acidre and House Assistant Majority Leader Jil Bongalon both urged Senator Ronald Dela Rosa to come forward and clarify his involvement in the extrajudicial killings (EJKs) during the controversial Duterte “war on drugs.” Acidre noted that Dela Rosa has repeatedly denied his accountability for the violence that marred the drug campaign.

“I hope he will just deal with it. His case at the ICC is tough, so that he can face and hear the sad stories of the orphans of those killed during the drug war. He keeps distancing himself from the thousands of deaths during the war on drugs, but he was the PNP Chief during that time,” Acidre said.

Bongalon also weighed in, questioning why Dela Rosa continues to evade responsibility despite his position as PNP Chief during the most violent phase of the anti-drug operations. Maricel V. Cruz

PARTY-LIST BACKS DEPED CHIEF’S PROGRAM TO ENHANCE IT SKILLS

LAWYER Nick Conti of the CLICK Partylist expressed strong support for Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara’s commitment to enhancing the digital literacy and IT skills of Filipino students. Following Angara’s recent address at the 4th Philippine-Singapore Business and Investment Summit, where he emphasized the integration of technology and coding in the Philippine educational curriculum, Conti shared his thoughts on the direction of education reform.

“The CLICK Partylist has long championed the importance of digital literacy, and we are pleased to see that Secretary Angara is prioritizing this aspect. His focus on coding, real-time analytics, and technological integration aligns perfectly with our goals of improving Computer Literacy, Innovation, Connectivity, and Knowledge (CLICK) across all levels of education,” Conti said. He further noted, “In today’s rapidly changing digital world, it is critical that Filipino students are equipped with the skills necessary to succeed in the global workforce. The focus on IT skills will not only make our students more competitive but will also open new opportunities for innovation and economic growth.”

LAWMAKER PUSHES FOR BIGGER DOH BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR

CAMARINES Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte on Saturday pushed for a bigger Department of Health (DOH) budget to establish more super health centers and upgrade existing ones nationwide.

Villafuerte, senior vice chair of the House Committee on Appropriations, said a higher outlay in the proposed 2025 DOH budget plan is needed for priority initiatives — notably its Health Facilities Enhancement Program (HFEP).

In a statement issued during Congress’s 2025 budget season, Villafuerte said a higher HFEP allotment next year will ensure that local governments running these public clinics have sufficient funds to acquire top-grade medical equipment and pay the salaries of doctors, nurses, and other staff in these facilities.

other ERC members. According to the memo, the appointment is intended to ensure the ongoing delivery of public services in the ERC until the President names a permanent replacement or further instructions are issued.

Andres, currently the Executive Director of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), is authorized to

receive representation, transportation allowances, and other benefits upon assuming his duties. Funds for these allowances will be drawn from ERC appropriations, subject to available resources and audit regulations.

Earlier, ERC chair Monalisa Dimalanta stepped down from her post after the regulator’s office officially received the six-month suspension order from the Office of the Ombudsman before 10 am Monday. The Ombudsman suspended Dimalanta from government service for six months without pay.

The House of Representatives has started plenary discussions on the proposed General Appropriations Act (GAA) for 2025, in line with Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez’s goal of wrapping up the chamber’s deliberations on next year’s national budget bill by September 25.

The Ombudsman directed the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Office of the President to implement the suspension and to appoint an Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the ERC.

Villafuerte, who is the majority leader of the Commission on Appointments, recalled that during the panel’s hearing on the appointment of Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, the latter agreed with him on the need for HFAP reforms to improve the delivery of healthcare services to the public. DFA: PH MOVES FORWARD WITH UNSC SEAT CAMPAIGN

DEPARTMENT of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo said the Philippines is moving forward in its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which is a top priority for the upcoming 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“The Philippines is making positive headway in its campaign for the UNSC, secure in our proven track record of being a dependable partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker in world affairs, with eight decades of multilateral

diplomacy experience as a founding member of the UN and having previously sat in the UNSC four times,” Manalo said.

From September 22 to 29, Manalo will be joined by officials from other government

agencies at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

The Philippines is set to deliver its National Statement during the plenary debate and will co-host several high-level discussions on topics such as nuclear disarmament and the implementation of the High Seas Treaty.

Manalo is also set to meet with several key figures, including senior leaders and foreign ministers from various countries, the President of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador and former Prime Minister of Cameroon Philemon Yang, and

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Reaffirming the Philippines’ commitment to multilateralism, Manalo said cooperation at a multilateral level is essential for “preserving peace and security.”

“The Philippines is committed to strengthening the United Nations’ role in addressing today’s complex crises, such as conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, climate change, economic inequality, and emerging threats in digital, geopolitical, space, and maritime domains,” Manalo said.

BOC REPORTS CONTAINER VANS WITH IMPORTED RICE NOW CLEARED

NEARLY all the 888 container vans containing imported rice worth P500 million currently stored at the Manila ports have already been cleared by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) but its importers are deliberately delaying their release.

In a statement, the BOC clarified that there were no port congestion that caused delay in rice shipments, raising concerns over potential delays and their effect on rice prices.

“The situation is not related to port congestion but stems from pending actions required by consignees for the release of these shipments,” the BOC said in a statement.

At the Port of Manila, 258 containers of rice remain in the yard. Of these, 237 containers have been cleared for release after payment of duties and taxes. The remaining 21 containers, accounting for 8.13%, had their Goods Declarations lodged only on 20 September 2024, and are still in the process of being cleared. Similarly, at the Manila International Container Port (MICP), 630 containers of rice remain in the yard. Of these, 492 containers have been cleared for release, while 138 containers are still pending payment of duties and taxes.

PROSECUTORS DISMISS ILLEGAL DETENTION RAPS VS. CAYETANO

TAGUIG City prosecutors have dismissed for lack of probable cause the illegal detention and grave coercion complaints filed against Mayor Lani Cayetano and three ranking officials of the city in connection with incidents filed by Makati City government employees.

In a resolution dated Aug. 2, Assistant City Prosecutor Duke Thaddeus Maog said the complaints against Cayetano, City Administrator Jose Luis Montales, Business Permits and Licensing Office Head Maria Theresa Veloso, Traffic Management Office Head Danny Cañaveral, and several unidentified individuals, were dismissed after “the complainants failed to back up their allegations with sufficient evidence to prove the existence of the offenses.”

The complaints were filed by Salvador Palisa, Ryalyn Almazar, Joven Mediavillo, and Salvador G. Mercado, all employees of the Makati City government, in relation to incidents that occurred between March 1 and 3 this year involving the closure of the Makati Park and Garden and the Makati Aqua Sports Arena (MASA) for lack of government permits. The complainants alleged that officials and personnel from Taguig City unlawfully detained them inside the park and prevented them from either exiting the park or entering the premises.

DOH: PAYMENTS FOR EMERGENCY AID NOW STAND AT 90 PERCENT

THE Department of Health (DOH) reported on Saturday that the total Health Emergency Allowance (HEA) obligation of P103.5 billion is now 90% paid.

The DOH, as an implementing agency, has settled around 14.5 million claims from health workers.

In April of 2024, the DOH recorded around P23.4 billion worth of HEA obligations for 4.3 million claims that could not be paid due to budget constraints. After the DOH processed and granted appeals, the figure rose to P27.3 billion.

In July of this year, President Marcos Jr. instructed Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah Pangandaman to no longer wait for the General Appropriations Act of 2025 to pay this amount, and to process it this year. The surplus fund balance or excess payments which PhilHealth returned to the national government provided the cash needed.

The DBM released a Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) to enable the DOH to fulfill the obligation. As of 20 September 2024, 64% of the additional P27.3 billion has already been disbursed. According to DOH, health facilities have been key players in the final payment of HEA to health workers themselves. DOH has listed 2,853 such facilities; checks have been issued to 2,070 (73%) of them. Ralph Harvey Rirao

UN: LEBANON DEVICE BLASTS VIOLATE INTERNATIONAL LAW

asked about the device explosions.

THE United Nations said the detonation of hand-held communication devices in Lebanon could constitute a war crime as Beirut’s top diplomat accused Israel of orchestrating what he called a “terror” attack.

The blasts that killed at least 37 people and wounded nearly 3,000 on Tuesday and Wednesday targeted communication devices used by the Iranbacked Hezbollah group.

Pagers and walkie-talkies exploded as their users were shopping in supermarkets, walking on streets and attending funerals, plunging the country into panic.

“International humanitarian law prohibits the use of booby-trap devices in the form of apparently harmless portable objects,” the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, told the Security Council during an emergency session on Lebanon requested by Algeria.

“It is a war crime to commit violence intended to spread terror among civilians,” he added,

repeating his call for an “independent, rigorous and transparent” investigation.

Lebanese authorities blame Israel for the attack and have said the targeted devices were boobytrapped before they entered the country.

Hezbollah has vowed retribution and launched its own internal probe into the explosions.

“I am appalled by the breadth and impact of the attacks,” said Turk.

“These attacks represent a new development in warfare, where communication tools become weapons,” he added.

“This cannot be the new normal.”

Speaking at the Security Council, Lebanon’s top diplomat Abdallah Bou Habib called the attack “an unprecedented method of warfare in its brutality and terror.”

“Israel, through this terrorist aggression has violated the basic principles of international humanitarian law,” he said, calling Israel a “rogue state.”

Israel has not commented on the device blasts but has said it will widen the scope of its war in Gaza to include the Lebanon front.

“I can tell you that we will do everything we can to target those terrorists,” Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told reporters on Friday when

He spoke after Israel announced it had killed the commander of Hezbollah’s elite unit in a strike on Beirut on Friday.

“We have no intention to enter a war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, but we cannot continue the way it is,” Danon said.

Speaking at the Security Council, Danon said Israel will do “whatever it takes” to restore security in northern areas.

“If Hezbollah does not retreat from our border... through diplomatic efforts, Israel will be left with no choice but to use any means within our rights,” he said.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres, said the body was “very concerned about the heightened escalation” across the Lebanon-Israel frontier after Friday’s Israeli strike on Beirut.

He called for “maximum restraint” from all sides.

Iran-backed Hezbollah is an ally of Palestinian militant group Hamas, which has been fighting a war in Gaza since its October 7 attack on Israel.

For nearly a year, the focus of Israel’s firepower has been on Gaza but its troops have also been engaged in near-daily clashes with Hezbollah militants along its northern border. AFP

NEW ZEALAND PILOT FREED IN INDONESIA

NEW Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens has been released from captivity by rebels in Indonesia’s restive region of Papua and was in good health despite the 19-monthlong ordeal, Indonesian and New Zealand authorities said Saturday. Mehrtens was working for Indonesian airline Susi Air when he was snatched by rebels at Nduga airport in the restive region on February 7 last year.

“Today we have picked up pilot Phillip who is in good health and we flew him from Nduga to Timika,” Faizal Ramadhani, head of a special unit formed to handle rebels in Papua, said in a statement.

A joint task force of police and military picked up Mehrtens in a village of Nduga district early Saturday, Faizal said.

The released hostage was then given medical and psychological checks before he was flown to Papua’s city of Timika.

The New Zealand government said Mehrtens was doing well and had spoken to his family, which had been assisted by Wellington. AFP

SAYS DOWNED 101 UKRAINE DRONES

RUSSIA downed 101 Ukrainian drones over its territory overnight, the defence ministry said on Sunday, with limited damage and no casualties initially reported where the majority fell.

“One hundred and one Ukrainian fixed-wing UAVs were destroyed and intercepted by the air defence systems on duty,” Russia’s defense ministry said on Telegram.

Fifty-three drones were downed over the Bryansk region, where the governor said there were no reports of damage or casualties.

Eighteen went down over Krasnodar, neighbouring Crimea, the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014. Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said falling debris from a drone “caused a fire that spread to explosive objects” in the Tikhoretsky district.

Residents were evacuated but no casualties reported, he added on Telegram.

Russia has recently announced shooting down Ukrainian drones almost daily in response to what Kyiv says are retaliatory strikes for Russian attacks during its offensive launched in February 2022. AFP

SRI LANKA VOTES IN 1ST POLL SINCE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE

CASH-STRAPPED Sri Lanka was voting for its next president Saturday in an effective referendum on an unpopular International Monetary Fund austerity plan enacted after the island nation’s unprecedented financial crisis.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is fighting an uphill battle for a fresh mandate to continue belt-tightening measures that stabilize the economy and end months of food, fuel and medicine shortages.

His two years in office restored calm to the streets after civil unrest spurred by the downturn in 2022 saw thousands storm the compound of his predecessor, who promptly fled the country.

“I’ve taken this country out of bankruptcy,”Wickremesinghe, 75, said after casting his ballot in the morning.

“I will now deliver Sri Lanka a

developed economy, developed social system and developed political system.”

But Wickremesinghe’s tax hikes and other measures, imposed per the terms of a $2.9 billion IMF bailout, have left millions struggling to make ends meet.

“There should be a change in the country,” voter Mohamed Siraj Razik, 43, told AFP. “Extravagant state spending just to benefit politicians must end.”

Wickremesinghe is tipped to lose to one of two formidable challengers.

One is Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the leader of a once-marginal Marxist party tarnished by its violent past.

The party led two failed uprisings in the 1970s and 1980s that left more than 80,000 people dead, and it won less than four percent of the vote in the last parliamentary elections.

But Sri Lanka’s crisis has proven an opportunity for the 55-year-old Dissanayaka, who has seen a surge of support based on his pledge to change the island’s “corrupt” political culture.

Fellow opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, 57, the son of a former president assassinated in 1993 during the country’s decades-long civil war, is also expected to make a strong showing.

He vowed to fight endemic corruption, and both he and Dissanayaka have pledged to renegotiate the terms of the IMF rescue package.

MTV: FROM STORY TELLER TO PLANET CHAMPION

MELANDREW T. Velasco, or MTV, has worn many hats throughout his life—as a journalist, author, PR strategist and businessman. Today, the role that brings him the most joy is being a family man and an advocate for others and the environment.

His journey is deeply intertwined with Philippine politics starting in the 1980s, having worked behind the scenes with politicians, generals, and CEOs. He shared confidential insights with a former president, a presidential candidate who nearly became one, and other influential leaders.

Velasco’s political and business expertise runs deep. He has chaired business chambers, spearheaded political campaigns, and initiated awards that recognize deserving individuals. Despite these feats, he is most well-known as the biographer of former President Fidel V. Ramos and his family as well as a civic leader and environmental advocate who spearheads a campaign to plant over a million trees annually.

EARLY LIFE

Velasco, who turned 60 this year, was born on Sept. 21, 1964, in the fishing village of Carael, Dagupan City. His mother, Marcela Bautista Tirao, was a rural dentist, while his father, Perry Pio Palma Velasco, worked as a finance officer at Dagupan’s electric company.

and later entered the Mary Help of Christians Seminary, where he edited the school’s paper and yearbook. His priestly aspirations took him to Christ the King Mission Seminary, but a crisis of faith eventually led him to leave and pursue a different path. “The more you know, the more you doubt,” Velasco reflects on his time there.

Velasco took summer classes at the University of Santo Tomas before deciding to leave the seminary altogether. He completed his degree in Mass Communications, majoring in Journalism, at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, in 1985. “That was a tumultuous time, going to EDSA Revolution amid economic downturn. I also became an activist and joined the League of Filipino Students,” he says.

On the day of graduation, Velasco married his girlfriend Tess Viray, who was pregnant with their first child. They were just 20 years old but faced the trials together. “I had two degrees, one in Journalism and the other a marriage degree,” he says. “If there is someone who could really be lucky in life, I think I am one of those.”

(MTVI), a multifaceted company focusing on PR, publishing, printing, consulting, and business development. To date, Velasco has authored 43 books, documenting historical events and personal narratives.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY

Aside from his work in politics and PR, Velasco has dedicated much of his life to environmental causes. As president of the Million Trees Foundation Inc., Velasco leads the Million Trees Challenge—an ambitious project initiated by former Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) administrator General Reynaldo Velasco.

FISH BONES ARE BAD FOR CATS

MANY cat owners assume that since cats seem to love fish, offering them fish bones as a treat is safe. Fish bones, while seemingly harmless, pose significant risks to cats, and feeding them to your feline companion can result in various health complications.

Dr. Harold Brandt, in “Can Cats Eat Fish Bones?” published in the All About Paws website, said the fish bones are bad for cats for the following reasons:

1. Choking Hazard

One of the primary risks associated with feeding fish bones to cats is the choking hazard. Fish bones, especially those found in smaller fish like sardines, can be sharp, brittle, and small. These bones can easily get stuck in the throat, leading to gagging, choking, or even a blocked airway. A cat's esophagus is much smaller and more delicate than a human's, and sharp bones can get lodged in the throat, causing immediate distress. Cats are unable to expel these bones easily, and if they are not quickly dislodged, it can lead to a medical emergency.

2. Gastrointestinal Obstruction

Ingesting fish bones can also lead to gastrointestinal obstructions. Fish bones are not easily digestible, especially when they are consumed in larger quantities. They can become lodged anywhere in

the gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach, intestines, or even further along the digestive system. Obstructions in the intestines can lead to serious complications, including vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy. If a cat ingests fish bones and begins to show signs of discomfort, such as repeated vomiting or refusal to eat, immediate veterinary attention is crucial.

3. Damage to the Esophagus and Digestive Tract

Fish bones, particularly those that are sharp or jagged, can cause lacerations or punctures in a cat's esophagus, stomach, or intestines. The delicate tissues in these areas are not designed to handle the sharp edges of bones.

“A punctured digestive tract is an emergency situation that can cause peritonitis, a life-threatening infection in the abdominal cavity. Even if the bone does not cause a full blockage, the damage it inflicts on the digestive tract can result in long-term complications, such as chronic infections or the

formation of scar tissue, which can disrupt normal digestion,” said Dr. Brandt.

4. Risk of Bone Fragments Getting Stuck in Teeth or Gums

Fish bones can also become stuck in a cat’s teeth or gums. The sharp edges of fish bones can pierce the soft tissue inside a cat's mouth. If a bone fragment becomes lodged between the teeth or in the gums, the cat may have difficulty eating, drool excessively, or show signs of oral discomfort, such as pawing at the mouth. In some cases, the stuck bone may require professional removal by a veterinarian. This leads to unnecessary expense.

5. Potential for Thiamine Deficiency

Feeding your cat too much fish, even without the bones, can result in a deficiency in thiamine (vitamin B1), which is essential for maintaining proper neurological function. Fish contains an enzyme

called thiaminase, which breaks down thiamine in a cat’s body. Over time, a thiamine deficiency can lead to neurological issues, such as muscle weakness, seizures, and impaired motor function. While this concern is primarily tied to excessive consumption of fish rather than bones specifically, it is an additional reason feeding cats fish-based diets, especially ones that contain bones, should be done sparingly and with caution.

Better Alternatives for Cats

Rather than offering fish bones, there are far better and safer alternatives for treating your cat.

“Cooked fish without bones, skin, or seasoning can be a rare treat, but it should not be a staple in a cat’s diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require a diet primarily made up of meat, and while fish contains some beneficial nutrients, it should be balanced with other animal proteins like chicken,” said Dr. Brandt. Commercial cat food, designed to provide balanced nutrition, are the best option for ensuring your cat gets the right nutrients without the risks associated with feeding raw or bone-in fish.

What to Do if Your Cat Eats Fish Bones

If you suspect that your cat has eaten fish bones, make sure to monitor them closely for any signs of distress. Symptoms such as coughing, gagging, difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting, or a refusal to eat may indicate that a bone has become lodged in the throat or digestive tract. In such cases, immediate veterinary attention is necessary. If the bone has caused an obstruction or punctured the digestive tract, your veterinarian may need to perform surgery to remove the bone and repair any damage.

PAWS TO HEAVEN PET AQUAMATION: A KINDER WAY TO SAY GOODBYE TO A BELOVED FURBABY

NESTLED in the vibrant heart of Quezon City, Paws to Heaven Pet Aquamation is charting a new course in how we bid farewell to our cherished pets. As one of only three establishments in the Philippines offering this innovative service, they are at the forefront of a movement that combines compassion with environmental responsibility.

A Mission Born from Personal Experience

Paws to Heaven Pet Aquamation is the brainchild of Sandra Lu and a dedicated team of pet lovers. This endeavor did not emerge from a corporate boardroom but from a genuine concern and personal experience with the loss of beloved pets. Sandra and her team had witnessed the distressing effects of traditional

methods like fire incineration and knew there had to be a kinder, more respectful alternative. Their journey led them to aquamation, a process that uses water, heat, and alkali to gently break down a pet’s body. After extensive research and countless late nights, they succeeded in bringing the first aquamation machine from the USA to the Philippines. This machine represents a significant shift in how pet afterlife care is approached in the country.

What Makes Aquamation Special Aquamation, or alkaline hydrolysis, stands out from traditional cremation in several key ways. Instead of high heat, it employs a combination of water, heat, and alkali to decompose the body. This method produces minimal carbon emissions and leaves behind a small amount of white ash that is lighter and purer in color. One of the touching

features of aquamation is its ability to often preserve a pet’s teeth, offering a more complete and respectful memento.

For many pet owners, choosing aquamation is about more than just the final farewell—it is about making an eco-friendly choice that aligns with their values. This method reflects a growing awareness of the environmental impact of our decisions, even in times of grief.

Giving

Back

to Those in Need

At Paws to Heaven, the commitment to animals extends far beyond the services they provide. They offer free aquamation services for stray pets—animals often left at their doorstep or found by compassionate individuals on the street. By providing this service at no cost, they ensure that every pet, no matter their background, receives a dignified farewell.

In addition to this, Paws to Heaven supports local shelters by donating free vitamins from their proceeds. Understanding the challenges faced by these shelters, they aim to ease their burdens and improve the quality of life for the animals they care for.

Partnering for Greater Impact

Sandra and her team are eager to collaborate with other shelters and animal organizations to broaden their reach. They are keen to work together to provide

CRYSTAL PARAS HOPES TO INSPIRE WITH NEW SINGLE ‘YOU, ME, AND US’

SPARKLE artist Crystal Paras stood at the side of the stage as she waited for her turn to sing. She took a deep breath as she went up on stage. With confidence and a smile on her face, Crystal held her microphone up and began delivering her performance. As usual, she gave an impeccable show.

The piece she sang was her latest single, “You, Me, and Us”, which was released by GMA Music last month. After a series of performances, together with fellow GMA artists Liana Castillo and Kim De Leon, Crystal sat down in front of the press to talk about her new song.

“When people hear the song, I just wanted them to feel like, especially for those who can’t articulate how they feel, they would know that I will not give up just because we’re going through a rough patch and I hope this song, I hope you feel the same way when you listen to this song.”

Coming from a family of performers, singing is not new to Crystal. Before entering the show business, she shared that she was an acoustic singer performing at several bars and restaurants in Quezon City. In that way, it became her training ground to hone and improve her musical talent.

“And then sometimes, I would dress up as a Disney princess and sing those songs. But I also write. Actually, it’s different from the ballads that I sing for GMA,” she continued.

From her Starstruck ago, Crystal has become a home grown artist of GMA. From an Avenger, she had done stints on TV series, singing soundtracks of teleseryes, and even becoming one of the regulars before on the variety show Sundays where she belted songs with OPM singers like Mark Bautista, Rita Daniela, Manilyn Reynes, Renz Verano, and her idol, Julie Anne San Jose

“GMA actually gave me the chance to sing in one of the segments of Out Sundays. And, I don’t know, that was just a dream come true. That was like two years ago. But, until now, I’m still very happy because she is my idol,” stated Crystal.

“And, she’s more than a triple threat. She can sing and dance and act and boast. And, I think she’s, a lot of what young girls like us, aspire to be, especially in the industry,” she added.

Reflecting on her journey as an artist, Crystal said that it was never easy.

“The journey has been rough so far, but all I can say is that these five years of being in this industry, V, Asawa Ng Asawa Ko would never reach the five years. At some point I felt like I wouldn’t be given projects,” she said.

“But we’re here and with a second song coming out, so I’m thankful that they’re giving us newbies a chance to sing. I love singing. I started in theater. My mom is also an actress in theater. It’s also her dream to be in showbiz,” added Crystal.

SB19 leader, main rapper, and lead vocalist Pablo delighted fans with the release of his new album “Laon” last Sept. 20, with #LaonOUTNOW together with “IKALAWA NA NI OLBAP” trending on X. Josue,” “Drowning In The Water,” and “Breathe (Outro)” were released last Sept. 13. FINDING JOY IN FINANCIAL LITERACY

‘EstudyanTIPID’

ON SEPT. 13, Knowledge Channel and BPI Foundation introduced EstudyanTIPID to students at Ernesto Rondon High School in Quezon City. During the event, students participated in financial management activities and games designed to provide them with essential tools for understanding financial matters.

The initiative serves as a lead-up to EstudyanTIPID, an educational series aimed at enhancing financial literacy among high school students. The show, produced by Knowledge Channel in partnership with BPI Foundation, features three new episodes that cover topics such as financial security, entrepreneurship, and basic economic concepts through relatable scenarios.

Sharlene San Pedro, who returns to television as Marla in the series, encouraged students to watch.

“If you’re a student looking for money-saving tips and want to learn about finances, this is for you! Watch ‘EstudyanTIPID’ on Knowledge Channel,” she said.

The series aligns with the Department of Education’s curriculum for Grade 9 students, specifically in Araling Panlipunan.

Rina Lopez, president of Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI), emphasized the importance of providing youth with essential financial skills.

“We are pleased to partner with BPI Foundation and other educational stakeholders to build a more financially literate Philippines, where young people can make informed financial choices,” Lopez stated.

BPI Foundation Executive Director Carmina Marquez highlighted the significance of early financial education, noting that “EstudyanTIPID” supports their vision of fostering a culture of saving and sustainable growth.

HOSPITALITY

FOR many people living in the city, the constant hustle and bustle of busy streets combined with the seemingly unending barrage of car horns and air filled with pollutants have become a normal part of their daily routines.

Adding the stress of a packed workday, such a city life leaves many wishing for an escape that promises peace and tranquility, like relaxing on a chair at the beach while watching gentle waves or exploring a gorgeous island as its fresh air blows through your hair. These are some of the activities awaiting guests at the Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort (SETIR).

Situated on the island of Naglayan in Culion, Palawan, the resort serves as a bastion of relaxation with its accommodations consisting of several villas resting above clear blue waters, complete with balconies where guests can admire the tranquil view.

FIFTEEN hospitality students from Vatel Manila completed a summer exchange program in Bangkok, Thailand, joining peers from Vatel sister schools in China, India, and the United Kingdom.

The program was hosted by Silpakorn University International College (SUIC), led by Dean Chombhak Klangrahad

Apart from the accommodations, the resort offers a variety of activities to help guests unwind and make the most of their vacation, such as taking a relaxing dip in the clear blue waters by the beach or the resort’s pools and jacuzzis.

Those seeking adventure can try kayaks, glass-bottom boats, and paddle boards, or see various types of marine life up close through a guided snorkeling activity. There are also several motorized water sports for guests to try, including jet skis, hydrobobs, banana boats, flying discs, and aquajets.

THE Philippines is set to launch

“bonfire diving,” a new night diving experience designed to attract tourists seeking unique underwater adventures.

The activity, created by Filipino diving photographer Ram Yoro, involves diving in shallow waters at night while using lights to draw in plankton and marine life, offering a captivating scene for underwater photography.

“Blackwater and bonfire diving appeal to divers looking for something different,” Yoro explained. “The same macro photography skills apply, but the subjects, like plankton, look otherworldly.”

First popularized in 2015, bonfire diving has attracted both local and international divers. Unlike blackwater diving, which requires deeper dives, bonfire diving is more accessible due

to its shallow water setup.

During the recent Philippine Travel Exchange, the Tourism Promotions Board announced plans to include bonfire diving in the country’s tourism offerings, in line with the government’s focus on experiential tourism. The Camiguin Diving Festival will be the launch event for this new activity, with the Department of Tourism (DOT) aiming to solidify the Philippines’ status as a top diving destination.

“This activity was developed by Filipinos and has been gaining popularity, particularly in Anilao,” said DOT Region 10 Director May Unchuan

The initiative is part of a broader DOT effort to promote experiential tourism, encouraging visitors to engage in culturally enriching activities such as exploring Indigenous communities, learning local cuisine, or honing English language skills.
