VP SARA HIRES ASSASSIN TO KILL PBBM, FIRST LADY, SPEAKER
CONTRACT TO BE EXECUTED IF SHE IS HERSELF ASSASSINATED
By Charles Dantes, Rachelle Tonelada, Vince Lopez, Joel Zurbano, and Maricel Cruz
Vice President Sara Duterte disclosed in an early morning interview yesterday that she had contracted an assassin to kill the President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she herself would be assassinated.
“Don’t worry about my security because I already talked to someone. I told them, if I’m killed, kill BBM (Marcos), Liza Araneta, and Martin Romualdez. No joke,” Duterte responded in a mix of English and Filipino to a Diehard Duterte Supporters (DDS) vlogger’s question during a Zoom press conference.
“I already had it arranged, ma’am. If I die, don’t stop until you kill them. And then he said yes,” she added without identifying the supposed assassin.
Duterte’s office called for the press briefing past midnight on Saturday, following the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability’s order to transfer her chief of staff, Undersecretary Zuleika Lopez, from the lower chamber’s detention facility to the Women’s Correctional Facility in Mandaluyong.
In response to the Vice President’s threat, the Presidential Se -
curity Command (PSC) said it has heightened its security protocols for the President and First Lady, saying it regarded Duterte’s public statements against the first couple as a significant national security concern.
“Any threat to the life of the President and the First Family, regardless of its origin—and especially one made so brazenly in public— is treated with the utmost seriousness,” PSC said in its statement.
The PSC stated it is in close collaboration with law enforcement agencies to “detect, deter, and defend” threats against the country’s highest officeholders.
“We consider this a matter of national security and shall take all necessary measures to ensure the President’s safety,” the statement added.
Philippine National Police (PNP) General Rommel Francisco Marbil, on the other hand, or-
dered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to probe the threat made by the Vice President.
“In light of Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent statement, which directly referenced an assassin contracted to target the President, the PNP recognizes the grave nature of this matter,” the PNP chief said.
“The Philippine National Police (PNP) treats any threat to the safety and security of the President and all public officials with the utmost seriousness,” Marbil added.
Earlier, Malacañang stressed that any threats against the President should be taken seriously, citing the gravity of Duterte’s public remarks.
Meanwhile, Senate President Francis Escudero expressed deep concern over the Vice President’s statements.
“I urge those who are close to her
-- those who truly care about her as a person and as a leader -- to advise her to refrain from making these indecorous and possibly criminal statements in public,” he said.
“If she is struggling, I sincerely hope she seeks and is provided with the help she may need so she can regain calm and composure, and properly discharge her duties as vice president,” Escudero said in a statement.
A House leader also called for heightened security measures to protect the President and First Lady, and Speaker Romualdez.
House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong described Duterte’s statements as reckless and destabilizing, and emphasized that such statements should not be dismissed and should not be taken lightly with a grain of salt, as he emphasized the need to safeguard the country’s top leaders against any potential harm.

ARMED Forces of the Philippines
(AFP) Chief General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. on Saturday issued a statement committing to military professionalism and national unity amid “greater challenges.’
“The (AFP) is a professional organization focused on its mandate to protect the people and the state. Our personnel are loyal to the Constitution and the Chain of Command,” Brawner said.
The military officer emphasized the importance of maintaining a non-partisan stance during this time.
“We are facing greater challenges that require the strength of a united country and armed forces. As a cornerstone of national stability, the AFP shall remain non-partisan, with utmost respect for our democratic institutions and civilian authority,” Brawner said.
“We call for calm and resolve, and for everyone to hold on to our values of respect and nationalism that will guide us in these trying times. We reiterate our need to stand together against those who will try to break our bonds as Filipinos,” he added. Although he did not expound on the aforementioned challenges, his statement follows Vice President Sara Duterte’s early Saturday morning press conference.
OVP CHIEF OF STAFF IN HOSPITAL; TO RESIGN AFTER PROBE, SAYS SARA
By Rachelle Tonelada
VICE President Sara Duterte’s chief of staff, Atty. Zuleika Lopez, has been transferred back to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center following a House order. The order was read yesterday by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Chief PBGen. Nicolas Torre III in the presence of Duterte and Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City Lopez hugged the vice president
while the transfer order was being read.
Duterte accompanied Lopez in the vehicle but declined to comment on the development.
Meanwhile, the Vice President said that Lopez had expressed her desire to resign and she had accepted it.
“She said ‘I want to go home to my mother once this is finished. I will resign. And I will go home to my mother, I just want to be with my mother,” Duterte added.
Lopez was initially detained at the
House of Representatives after being cited in contempt and was taken to the VMMC before her transfer to St. Luke’s. She was brought there past 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, after the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability ordered her transfer to the Women’s Correctional Institution in Mandaluyong City. According to House sergeant-at-arms retired Police Maj. Gen. Napoleon Taas, a Philippine National Police (PNP) doctor who accompanied Lopez to VMMC
reported that medical tests on her revealed no alarming findings, with all results coming back “normal” and she is in “good shape.”
Duterte had earlier accused the House investigation into her confidential funds as “political harassment.”
“You are destroying the names of my colleagues in the Office of the Vice President. You say that these are stolen, that they are confidential funds. You don’t even have proof they are confidential funds,” she said.
A House leader on Saturday urged the public not to be misled by Vice President Sara Duterte’s inflammatory remarks,
LAWMAKERS SET PROBE ON UHC
By Maricel V. Cruz
The House of Representatives Committee on Health is poised to conduct an inquiry in aid of legislation on how the Universal Health Care (UHC) law has been implemented.
House deputy speaker and Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin appealed to the House leadership led by Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez to support her House Resolution 2081 that calls for the probe on the matter.
Garin stressed the inquiry should focus on the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) process and other provisions of the law that may hinder timely access to
necessary healthcare innovations. She added the sought review aims to institute legislative reforms to improve the availability and accessibility of healthcare for all Filipinos.
Aside from the HTA process, the committee should also review the HTA Council structure and function as it may not consistently fulfill its mandate in an impartial and timely manner, according to
the resolution.
In her resolution, Garin stressed the need for a thorough review of the primary implementer of the UHC law as the DOH should be the primary implementer, not Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).
“I urge the leadership of both the House and the Senate to amend UHC a priority. We must address the elephant in the room,” Garin said, referring to the restrictive provisions of Republic Act (RA) 11223.
“It is vital to fortify the country’s public health system and ensure timely access to essential health interventions for Filipinos,” added the former Health chief.
Garin, also a doctor and vacci -
nologist, pointed out that health interventions such as medicines, vaccines, and medical devices need not undergo Phase IV clinical study as Section 34 of the UHC law states.
After the Phase III clinical trial, health interventions are already considered safe and efficacious, Garin explained.
“The requirement for Phase IV clinical trials under Section 34 of the UHC Act may result in significant delays in providing Filipinos access to cutting-edge medical innovations and treatments, effectively requiring that such interventions be extensively used in other countries for 5 to 10 years before being made available domestically,” the resolution read.
NATION COMMEMORATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF INFAMOUS MAGUINDANAO MASSACRE
By Charles Dantes and Jun N. Aguirre
THE nation marked the 15th anniversary of the Maguindanao Massacre on Saturday, honoring the memory of the 58 individuals, including 32 journalists, who were brutally killed in one of the deadliest attacks on media workers worldwide.
The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) joined the commemoration, reaffirming its commitment to protecting press freedom and ensuring justice for the victims.
In a statement, the task force described the massacre as a stark reminder of the risks journalists face in their pursuit of truth and accountability.
The PTFoMS emphasized its ongoing mission to prevent violence against media workers and strengthen coordination among government agencies and media organizations, particularly in local communities. It also vowed to foster a culture of respect for press freedom and pursue justice for victims of media-related violence.
The massacre occurred on Nov.
23, 2009, when a convoy of journalists, lawyers, and family members of then-gubernatorial candidate Esmael Mangudadatu was ambushed in Ampatuan, Maguindanao.
The group was on its way to file Mangudadatu’s candidacy when armed men linked to a powerful political clan attacked.
Senator Risa Hontiveros meanwhile urged the media to be vigilant as the country commemorates the 15th anniversary of the infamous massacre in Maguindanao.
Hontiveros, in a press conference at the Aklan Provincial Capitol on
Saturday, said that she was studying how to strengthen human rights in the country to prevent the same incident from happening again.
On November 23, 2009, some 58 victims, many of whom were members of the media, were ambushed and killed in a firing squad in Maguindanao province. Some 44 involved were convicted in court while 88 others remained at large. Two of the victims were from Altavas, Aklan.
Hontiveros was in Aklan to launch her forum “Anti-Bastos” law among the students and advocates at the Northwestern Visayan College here.

By Charles Dantes
PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will embark on a one-day working visit to the United Arab Emirates on Nov. 26, aiming to bolster ties and explore areas of cooperation with the Gulf nation.
Mr. Marcos is set to meet UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, where discussions are expected to yield agreements that deepen bilateral relations.
According to Malacañang, the talks will focus on shared values and mutual interests, creating new opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.
During the visit, President Marcos will also express the Philippine government’s gratitude for the UAE’s

recognition of Filipino talent, praising its inclusive environment that fosters “kindness, respect, and tolerance.”
Despite the brief nature of the trip, the administration emphasized its potential to generate substantial goodwill and strengthen Philippine-UAE relations.
The President’s delegation has been reduced to the “barest minimum” to streamline the trip, with the President opting to return to Manila immediately after the meeting. He cited the need to personally oversee relief and reconstruction efforts in areas devastated by six successive typhoons.
He apologized to the Filipinos in the UAE who had hoped to meet him, explaining that his priority is to support recovery efforts back home.

VILLANUEVA HAILS HOUSE DECISION TO BAN E-SABONG
REP. Eddie Villanueva of CIBAC party-list group lauded the House of Representatives committee for the approval of a bill that prohibits and penalizes the operations of online cockfighting or e-sabong.
The yet unnumbered substitute bill to House Bills 9996 and 10307 which was approved recently by the House Committee on Games and Amusements prohibits any online, remote, or off-site wagering or betting on live cockfighting matches, events, and activities streamed or broadcast live from cockpit arenas or premises.
The bill prohibits e-sabong operations, invalidates all existing permits issued by the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), and directs the monitoring and blocking of any existing or emerging e-sabong platforms. The measure also prohibits transmitting, placing, or receiving online betting on live-streamed cockfights, or broadcasting of the same through online or other remote modes of betting.
Villanueva, author of HB 10307, emphasized the measure is crucial to protect Filipinos from the harmful effects of online gambling, which has led to financial ruin, family conflict, and even criminal activities. Maricel V. Cruz
HOUSE PANELS TO FOCUS ON PH FISHERIES, MARINE RESOURCES
THE joint committees of the House of Representatives approved a bill that aims to establish a separate Cabinetlevel department tasked to focus on the management of the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources. The measure, which will create the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR), has hurdled the scrutiny of the House Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources chaired by Rep. Brian Yamsuan of Bicol Saro party-list group and the House Committee on Government Reorganization represented by its vice chairpersons—Kabayan Partylist Rep. Ron Salo and General Santos City Rep. Loreto Acharon. Both committees approved in a recent joint hearing the substitute bill consolidating 13 similar measures seeking to create the DFAR, subject to the amendments introduced by Albay Rep. Joey Salceda and Tingog Partylist Rep. Jude Acidre. Yamsuan said establishing the DFAR would help fulfill the country’s goal of attaining food security and safeguard the welfare of 2.5 million Filipinos dependent on the country’s oceans and inland water bodies for their livelihood. N. KOREAN TROOPS MASSED IN RUSSIA TO ENTER UKRAINE WAR ‘SOON’ — PENTAGON CHIEF
SYDNEY, Australia — The United States expects that thousands of North Korean troops massing in Russia will “soon” enter combat against Ukraine, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said Saturday.
About 10,000 North Korean soldiers were believed to be based in the Russian border region of Kursk, Austin said, where they were being “integrated into the Russian formations”.
“Based upon what they’ve been trained on, the way they’ve been integrated into the Russian
formations, I fully expect to see them engaged in combat soon,” Austin told reporters during a stopover in Pacific nation Fiji.
Austin said he had “not seen significant reporting” of North Korean troops being “actively engaged in combat” to date.
South Korean government officials and a research group on Thursday said Russia has provided Pyongyang with oil, anti-air missiles, and economic help in exchange for the troops Washington and Seoul have accused it of sending.
Kyiv has warned that Moscow, alongside the North Korean soldiers, has now amassed a 50,000-strong force to wrest back parts of the border region seized by Ukrainian forces.
Ukraine claimed swathes of Kursk in August during a lightning offensive even as its troops were thinly stretched in the Donetsk region, which has borne the brunt of nearly three years of fighting. AFP
COP 29 CLIMATE TALKS HANG AFTER POORER NATIONS REJECT $250-B OFFER FROM RICH COUNTRIES
BAKU, Azerbaijan — Fierce bargaining at UN climate talks in Azerbaijan dragged into Saturday after a $250 billion a year offer from rich nations was flatly refused by developing countries hardest hit by Earth’s rapid warming.
Negotiators from nearly 200 nations spent another harried and sleepless night in a sports stadium trying to land a compromise figure for poorer countries facing rising seas, harsher droughts, and worsening disasters.
At daybreak, the marathon backand-forth overnight in the Caspian Sea city of Baku had yet to produce a final draft acceptable to all.
Azerbaijan, which is hosting the COP29 summit, had said it hoped to adopt a global deal by consensus at a closing session sometime after 10:00 am (0600 GMT).
On Friday, after negotiating for the better part of two weeks, wealthy countries proposed raising their commitment for climate action in poorer nations from $100 billion to $250 billion a year by 2035.
The offer was roundly spurned by countries that need enormous sums to shift their economies to clean energy and build resilience to climate shocks on their doorstep.
“It is shameful to put forward texts
like these,” said Tina Stege, climate envoy for the Marshall Islands, an atoll nation threatened by rising seas.
COP29 hosts Azerbaijan urged nations to keep striving but admitted the figure was not “fair or ambitious” enough.
The Alliance of Small Island States, for which climate change is an existential threat, said the offer showed “contempt for our vulnerable people.”
Ali Mohamed, chair of the African Group of Negotiators, another influential bloc, called it“totally unacceptable and inadequate.”
A group of developing countries had demanded at least $500 billion, and some said with inflation the figure proposed by rich nations would be much lower in reality.
Extraordinary reach
Experts commissioned by the United Nations assessed that developed nations should triple their $100 billion pledge by 2030.
This figure has been taken up by Brazil, the host of next year’s COP30, which says $300 billion should be the responsibility of wealthier countries.
A senior US official signaled Washington was not looking to negotiate a higher figure, and that $250 billion would require “even more ambition and extraordinary reach.”
BEIRUT, Lebanon — Lebanon said four people were killed and 23 injured in an Israeli strike on central Beirut on Saturday, as rescue operations continued hours after a residential building was razed.
On Saturday morning, AFP footage showed an excavator removing the rubble of the eight-story building hit at around 04:00 a.m. (0200 GMT), with a fire truck and civil defense rescuers nearby while people gathered around the site.
“The Israeli enemy strike on Basta al-Fawqa in Beirut killed four people and injured 23 others,” the ministry said in a statement, giving a preliminary toll. There was no evacuation warning from the Israeli military for the Basta area.
Rescuers were “removing rubble in Al-Mamoun Street in the Basta (neighborhood), where Israeli enemy aircraft targeted an eight-story building at
TRUMP NAMES HEDGE FUND MANAGER AS TREASURY CHIEF
WASHINGTON , United States — US
President-elect Donald Trump on Friday named billionaire Scott Bessent as his Treasury secretary, choosing the hedge fund manager to help execute an agenda promising tax cuts and tariffs.
Bessent, who is chief executive officer of Key Square Group, has called for an extension of tax cuts from Trump’s first term, wants to reassert American energy dominance, and believes it is necessary to deal with the budget deficit.
“Scott is widely respected as one of the world’s foremost international investors and geopolitical and economic strategists,” Trump said in a statement.
“He will help me usher in a new Golden Age for the United States, as we fortify our position as the world’s leading economy,”he said, adding Bessent would also help “reinvigorate the private sector, and help curb the unsustainable path of federal debt.”
The nomination of Bessent — who recently served as an advisor to Trump — would put him at the forefront of rolling out the president-elect’s economic plan, from seeing tax cuts through Congress to managing ties with countries like China. The position carries influence over both domestic and international policy. With Trump promising sweeping tariffs on allies and adversaries alike, all eyes will be on how his new Treasury chief walks the line between supporting these efforts and fanning trade tensions that might roil the global economy.
The Treasury Department has oversight across a range of areas, from federal finances to bank supervision. The Treasury also oversees US sanctions. Bessent has in recent times called for tax reform and deregulation to spur growth.
In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, he said this would be key to “restarting the American growth engine” and helping keep prices in check.
American Bankers Association president Rob Nichols said in a statement that Bessent’s “years of real-world experience in financial markets will serve him well in leading a department critical to the global economy and the nation’s banks.” AFP
VENEZUELA OPENS TREASON INQUIRY VS. MACHADO
CARACAS , Venezuela — Venezuela prosecutors opened a treason investigation Friday into opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, a statement said, accusing her of supporting US sanctions targeting President Nicolas Maduro after his contested July reelection.
President-elect Donald Trump takes office in two months and is expected to again pull the world’s largest economy out of climate diplomacy.
Germany, a longtime leader on climate where elections are due next year, said governments could not meet these costs alone, and debt restructuring and other financial tools would need to play a part.
Europe wants to “live up to its responsibilities, but also in a way that it doesn’t make promises it can’t live up to,”German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told reporters.
The draft text also sets an ambitious overall target to raise at least $1.3 trillion per year by 2035 from not only developed countries but the private sector.
Joke
Obed Koringo, a Kenyan activist from CARE, said $250 billion was “a joke.”
“From Africa, where I come from, what we are saying is... no deal is better than a bad deal,” he said.
But Avinash Persaud, special advisor on climate change to the president of the Inter-American Development Bank, said that the offer showed the talks were “within sight of a landing zone” for the first time.
dawn, completely destroying it, and leaving a large number of people dead and wounded,” the official National News Agency said.
The NNA also reported that Israeli jets launched six missiles at the building in the working-class Basta neighborhood causing “widespread destruction in buildings” nearby.
AFP journalists heard at least three large explosions in the capital at dawn.
Saturday’s strikes were the second time the Basta district had been targeted since war broke out, with deadly twin strikes early in October targeting the area and the Nweiri neighborhood.
Hours later the NNA reported another Israeli strike, this time on the Hadath area of Beirut’s southern suburbs, Hezbollah’s main bastion. AFP
“There is no deal to come out of Baku that will not leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth,” said the former advisor to Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
The United States and European Union have wanted newly wealthy emerging economies like China -- the world’s largest emitter -- to chip into the pot.
China, which remains classified as a developing nation under the UN framework, provides climate assistance but wants to keep doing so on its own voluntary terms.
Separately, there was a push for stronger language in the deal to reaffirm a global pledge on moving away from coal, oil, and gas — the main drivers of global warming.
A Saudi official speaking on behalf of the Arab Group said Thursday the bloc would “not accept any text that targets any specific sectors, including fossil fuel” in Baku.
Top German diplomat Baerbock singled out Saudi Arabia and warned that its goal was “turning back the clock.”
Azerbaijan, an authoritarian state that relies on oil and gas exports, has been accused of lacking the experience and bandwidth to steer such large and complex negotiations. AFP
In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said it has opened the inquiry because Machado’s support for tougher US measures constitutes “treason to the homeland, according to article 128 of the penal code, (and) conspiracy with foreign countries.”
The office said it is“fighting against any person, group, or national or international entity that threatens the stability of the country.”
On Monday, the US House of Representatives passed the BOLIVAR Act, a bipartisan bill that bars US federal agencies from conducting business with the Maduro regime or its associates. It still needs passage by the Senate and President Joe Biden’s signature for it to become law.
Caracas reacted angrily to the House action, saying the bill would violate the UN Charter.
During Donald Trump’s first term as US president, from 2017 to 2021, he imposed a policy of maximum pressure — including tightening financial sanctions and instituting an oil embargo — in an unsuccessful effort to oust Maduro from power.
The measures were later softened by President Joe Biden, whose administration nonetheless refused to recognize Maduro’s claim to have won a third term in July 2024 elections, which were again marked by allegations of fraud. Maduro claimed victory and defied domestic and international calls to release detailed polling numbers to back up the assertion that he won.
The opposition claimed that its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who had been swiftly picked to run in Machado’s place after she was declared ineligible, won with over 67 percent of the vote.
Amid an outcry at home and abroad, the former bus driver Maduro, handpicked by the late Hugo Chavez, is now serving his third term in the oil-rich country whose economy is in shambles, as Venezuelans endure acute shortages of food, medicine, and other basic goods.
Maduro is accused of leading a harshly repressive leftist regime, with a systematic crackdown on the opposition.
Since the election, Gonzalez Urrutia has fled to Spain due to an outstanding arrest warrant, while Machado has gone into hiding.

During this journey, she earned a degree in accounting to complement her earlier studies in hospitality. This equipped her with a strong foundation in managing finances and driving innovation, skills she would later bring to her farming venture.
“I was fortunate to have a boss who allowed me to grow. I learned to manage a business, handle accounts, and even represent the company across the AsiaPacific region,” she said. Returning home, she cared for her ailing father, while contemplating a fresh start. The family’s eight-hectare farm in Pangasinan passed down from her parents, was where she found the opportunity to start anew.
Family Breguera’s family plays a significant role in her journey. She’s the youngest of five siblings, but as she puts it, “I was the one with the green thumb”.
While her siblings aren’t involved in the farm’s daily operations, they’ve picked her to take charge. Her husband manages the farm’s finances and oversees processing operations, while Breguera focuses on production and sales. She frequently travels to Manila for trade fairs and business negotiations, ensuring their products reach a wider market. While managing the family business, she also cares for her children, who have spent most of their lives in Brunei. Her eldest child

OFW CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN FARMERS, YOUTH
is studying civil engineering, despite Breguera’s attempts to encourage him to pursue a career in agriculture.
Building Abundance
Inspired by her father’s passion for farming, Breguera turned her focus to organic agriculture, bringing to life the Abundance Agri-Tourism and Training Center in 2018.
The pandemic in 2021 pushed her to innovate, and from five pots of Thai basil, the farm has now expanded to growing 18 herbs including roselle, rosemary, serpentina and tarragon.
These are processed into teas and spices sold online and in big city markets. The farm also sells seedlings and runs training programs, helping farmers learn both organic methods and agroentrepreneurship.
“We teach them how to farm and how to run a business. We give them seedlings, buy their harvest, and process it into products,” Breguera said. Organic certification
Breguera’s farm is part of the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), a government initiative that certifies farms as organic at a much lower cost. Third-party certifications can cost over P100,000, but PGS charges just P10,000.
“It’s a big help for small farmers. Certification gives them access to better markets, and we make it affordable,” she said.
Her farm also supports women farmers and out-of-school youth, offering training and job opportunities.
Like any startup, Abundance faced many challenges during the pandemic such as difficulty in logistics, inconsistent markets and rising costs, making it hard to balance everything.
Government programs like DTI’s Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME) helped Breguera innovate and grow. Through trade fairs, she connected with buyers in Manila, where one day of sales can match a month’s income in Pangasinan.
Legacy for the future
Breguera’s father, who passed away in 2022, is a lasting source of inspiration and guidance in her life.
As she balances her roles as a business leader, wife and mother, Breguera hopes her children will one day take part in the farm. For now, she’s focused on helping others and growing the farm and the training school.
Her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: “Keep learning, stay focused and don’t give up. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.” Othel V. Campos

NAVIGATING THE DIFFICULT CONVERSATION: TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT THE DEATH OF A PET
By Mariana Burgos
LOSING a beloved pet can be an incredibly challenging experience for families, especially for children. Pets often hold a special place in the hearts of kids, serving as companions, confidants, and sources of unconditional love. When a pet passes away, it can leave children feeling confused, sad, and unsure of how to process their grief. Therefore, it becomes essential for parents to find the right way to communicate about this loss.
Understanding the Impact of Pet Loss
The death of a pet can be particularly difficult for children due to their strong emotional attachments.
According to the article "When a Pet Dies" by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the loss of a pet can be one of the first experiences children have with death. This unique circumstance offers an opportunity for parents to teach their children about grief and the natural cycle of life.
Emotional Responses to Pet Loss
Children may exhibit a range of emotional responses to the death of a pet, including:
· Sadness: This is often the most immediate reaction, as children may cry or express feelings of emptiness.
· Anger: Some children may feel angry about the loss, perhaps directing their frustration towards parents or themselves.
· Confusion: Young children, in particular, might struggle to understand the permanence of death, leading to feelings of confusion or denial.
· Guilt: Children may worry that they somehow caused the death of their pet, leading to feelings of guilt or shame.
Understanding these emotional responses can help parents navigate the conversation with empathy and sensitivity.
Preparing for the Conversation
Before discussing the death of a pet with a child, parents should take some time to prepare.
The article "How to Talk About the Death of a Pet with Your Kid" from Parents suggests that parents reflect on their own feelings about the loss. This self-awareness can help them communicate more effectively and authentically with their children.
Choosing the Right Time and Place
Finding the right moment to have this conversation is crucial. Parents should look for a quiet time when they can give their child undivided attention. A comfortable setting, such as a favorite spot in the home, can provide a sense of safety and security for the child.
Starting the Conversation
When initiating the conversation about the death of a pet, parents should aim to be honest while also being ageappropriate. Here are some effective strategies to consider:
Use Simple Language
Young children may not fully understand complex concepts related to death. As suggested by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, using simple and clear language can help convey the message without overwhelming the child. For instance, instead of using euphemisms like "passed away" or "gone to sleep," parents might say, "Your pet has died. That means they are no longer with us."
Encourage Questions
Children may have numerous questions about the death of a pet. Parents should be prepared to answer these queries openly and honestly. If a child asks why the pet died, parents can explain that sometimes pets get very sick or old, and their bodies stop working. This approach can help demystify the process of death and encourage children to express their feelings.
Validate Emotions
It is essential for parents to validate their child's emotions during this difficult time. Acknowledging that it is okay to feel sad, angry, or confused can provide comfort
and reassurance. Parents might say something like, "It's normal to feel sad when we lose someone we love. I'm sad too." This kind of affirmation can foster a sense of connection and shared experience.
Coping with Grief Together
Grieving is a personal journey, and children may need different forms of support to cope with their loss. Here are some strategies that can help families navigate the grieving process together:
Create a Memorial
Creating a memorial for the pet can be a meaningful way for children to express their feelings and celebrate their pet’s life. Parents can involve their children in planning a small ceremony, such as planting a tree, creating a scrapbook, or drawing pictures of their pet. This act can provide a sense of closure and help children honor their furry friend.
Share Memories
Encouraging children to share their favorite memories of the pet can also be a therapeutic activ-
ity. Parents might ask questions like, "What was your favorite thing to do with your pet?" or "What made you laugh the most?" This allows children to reflect on the joy their pet brought into their lives while also acknowledging their grief.
Maintain Routine and Normalcy
While it is important to grieve, maintaining a sense of normalcy can also be beneficial for children. Keeping regular routines, such as school and playdates, can provide stability during a tumultuous time. Parents should encourage children to engage in their usual activities, as this can help them process their emotions in a healthy way.
Seeking Professional Help
If a child appears to be struggling significantly with their grief, it may be helpful to seek guidance from a mental health professional. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry suggests that grief counseling can provide additional support and coping strategies for children who may be having difficulty processing their emotions.
A Journey of Healing
Talking to children about the death of a pet is undoubtedly a challenging task, but it also offers an invaluable opportunity for growth and understanding. By approaching the conversation with sensitivity, honesty, and love, parents can help their children navigate their grief while reinforcing the importance of cherishing memories. With the right support and guidance, families can emerge from this experience with a deeper understanding of the emotional landscape surrounding pet loss.

FASCINATING CONCEPT OF ANIMAL REINCARNATION
THE notion of reincarnation has long been associated with human beliefs and philosophies, yet it extends intriguingly into the realm of animals. The idea that animals might reincarnate raises profound questions about life, death, and the continuity of consciousness.
Understanding Reincarnation
Reincarnation is the belief that the soul or consciousness can be reborn into a new body after death. This concept is prevalent in several religious and spiritual traditions, including Hinduism and Buddhism. The fundamental idea is that life is a cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, where the essence of an individual persists beyond physical existence. When it comes to animals, the discussion becomes more nuanced. While many people may find it easier to conceptualize reincarnation in humans, the possibility that animals could experience the same phenomenon invites deeper contemplation.
Evidence and Anecdotes of Animal Reincarnation
Personal Experiences
Numerous anecdotes suggest that animals can reincarnate. In her article "Do Animals Reincarnate?", Danielle MacKinnon discusses various personal stories of pet owners who believe they have encountered their deceased pets in new forms. These stories often involve striking similarities in behavior, appearance, or personality traits, leading owners to conclude that they are interacting with the same soul.
Familiar Behavior: Pet owners frequently report that their new pets exhibit habits or quirks reminiscent of their previous companions.
Physical Resemblance: Some individuals claim that the
physical traits of their new pets closely resemble those of their departed animals.
Such stories, while anecdotal, contribute to the conversation surrounding animal reincarnation, providing a glimpse into the emotional connections people share with their pets.
Scientific Perspectives
While personal experiences can be compelling, they do not constitute scientific proof. The scientific community largely remains skeptical about reincarnation, as it challenges the prevailing understanding of biology and consciousness. However, some researchers have begun to explore the concept of consciousness beyond the physical body.
Consciousness Studies: Emerging fields of study, such as neurobiology and consciousness research, are investigating the nature of awareness and subjective experience. These studies could provide insights into whether consciousness is strictly tied to physical existence or if it can transcend it.
Spiritual Beliefs and Cultural Perspectives
Different cultures have various beliefs regarding the afterlife and the possibility of reincarnation for animals. In many indigenous cultures, animals are viewed as spiritual beings with their own consciousness and soul. They are often regarded as guides or teachers, implying a deeper connection between humans and animals.
Animal Spirit Guides: Some spiritual traditions believe that animals can return to guide humans in their lives, suggesting a cyclical relationship between species.
Interconnectedness: The belief in interconnectedness among all living beings supports the idea that the essence of an animal could persist beyond its physical form.
The Role of Love and Attachment
The bonds formed between humans and animals are often profound, leading to speculation about the potential for reincarnation. In her article "Can a Pet Reincarnate?", Rachel Webb explores the emotional connections
people have with their pets and how these relationships might influence beliefs about reincarnation.
Emotional Significance: The loss of a beloved pet can leave a significant emotional void, prompting individuals to seek signs or connections to their deceased companions.
Desire for Continuity: The desire to believe that a cherished pet could return in some form can be a comforting thought for grieving owners.
The Healing Process
For many, the idea of reincarnation offers a form of solace during the grieving process. Believing that a pet may return can help individuals cope with loss, allowing them to cherish memories while looking forward to potential reunions in another life.
True Stories of Animal Reincarnation
The exploration of reincarnation is further enriched by compelling narratives and documented occurrences. The article "Animal Reincarnation: The True Story of Re-entry" discusses various cases where individuals claim to have witnessed their pets reincarnating into new forms.
Case Studies: These stories often feature specific details about the new animal’s behavior, preferences, or physical traits, reinforcing the belief that the same consciousness has re-entered a different body.
Shared Memories: Some individuals report vivid memories of their deceased pets, which they claim their new pets also seem to recall or embody. These narratives provide a rich tapestry of experiences that contribute to the ongoing discussion about reincarnation.
Challenges to the Concept
Despite the allure of the idea, there are significant challenges to the concept of animal reincarnation. Skeptics
argue that the evidence presented is largely anecdotal and lacks rigorous scientific validation. Furthermore, the complexities of animal behavior and genetics can often explain similarities between pets without invoking the notion of reincarnation.
Behavioral Science: Many behaviors exhibited by animals can be attributed to instinct, training, or environmental factors. This perspective challenges the idea that these behaviors are remnants of a previous life.
Genetic Influence: The genetic makeup of an animal plays a crucial role in determining its physical traits and behaviors, which could account for the similarities observed by pet owners.
A Personal Journey
The question of whether animals can reincarnate is deeply personal and often influenced by individual beliefs, experiences, and cultural backgrounds. While there is no definitive scientific evidence to support the idea, the multitude of personal stories and spiritual beliefs surrounding animal reincarnation continues to inspire hope and contemplation.
As society evolves and our understanding of consciousness deepens, the discussion surrounding reincarnation may gain new dimensions. For many pet owners, the possibility that their beloved companions may return in some form remains a comforting thought, embodying the enduring bond between humans and animals. In summary, whether or not animals truly reincarnate may remain an open question. However, the exploration of this concept invites reflection on the nature of existence and the connections that transcend life and death. As the journey of understanding continues, the love between humans and animals will undoubtedly remain a central theme in this inquiry.

IMAGINE this: pakwan kinilaw made from watermelon rind and mushroom ends with rice crispies, ginger and camote chips.
The delectable dish is a glimpse into the minds of two formidable chefs -- Westin Manila's Rej Casanova and Burrow Cafe's Dan Puga.
"It tastes just like snapper," said Chef Dan, who collaborated with the hotel to kick off its Green Mondays offering -- extended until the first half of December amid the warm response of patrons to the innovative dishes offered at Westin's signature buffet restaurant, Seasonal Tastes.
"We strive to achieve zero waste menus, and we hope patrons can taste this philosophy," he said.
FOR many Filipino moms, cooking is an act of love. But even the most beloved dishes can lose their appeal over time, leading to what’s known as “sawa”—the feeling of getting tired or bored with the same meals.
The Struggle with ‘Sawa’
Several Pinoy moms from online communities air the same concern — busy schedules and not knowing what to cook can make addressing “sawa” extra challenging.
For instance, many shared that while eggbased dishes like omelettes and scrambled eggs are convenient breakfast options, their kids eventually grow tired of them.
“Dati, every day, three times a day. Ngayon, napipilitan na ubusin,” one mother said. This issue isn't limited to breakfast. Some mothers shared that their children ask what other dishes they know how to cook. Kids also request canned goods instead of homemade dishes for lunch and dinner when they experience “sawa.”
Mothers recognize the need for variety but admit that it’s hard to keep meals exciting due to time constraints and lack of new ideas. “Ako na ang nagsasawa minsan sa luto ko,” admitted one mother.
Impact on Kids
“Sawa” can lead to deeper issues, too. According to Jericho Medel, educator and chairperson of the Developmental Psychology Division of the Psychological Association of the Philippines,

KILAWING PAKWAN AND THE CULINARY IMAGERY OF DREAMS
Chef Rej added: "Green Mondays will feature dishes made by our guest chef or those created in collaboration with a homegrown brand. This is our way of bringing the community together to showcase culinary innovation and support local and fellow industry players."
The featured dishes will be part of the buffet's One Dish Wonders section, served à la minute on tasting plates.
"Guests can choose from the lineup, and our chefs will cook them fresh—in moderate servings to enhance your dining experience," Chef Rej said.
The dishes include smoked mackerel ceviche with laing purée and cilantro relish, a
nod to Chef Dan's mother who loved to cook the classic Bicolano dish.
There's the no meat tacos that used refried beans with cilantro, tomato salsa, and cashew sour cream; the truffle mushroom adlai risotto and seafood risotto with fresh water prawns, squid, salmon and tomato essence; and the wine braised beef brisket with squash puree and vegetable mélange.
For dessert, the black suman with mango, cashew and vanilla ice cream must not be missed.
"Green Mondays is one of the ways we support Marriott International's Serve 360 sustainability program and reduce excess food production," Chef Rej said.
having monotonous meals may affect the motivation of children during mealtime.
Dietary habits that develop at an early age could be maintained in later life; not addressing the issue of meal monotony can encourage other behaviors, such as refusing to finish a meal and having difficulty exploring new and even familiar food items.
“These concerns lead to parental pressure to meet the nutritional needs of their children. However, we may take into account that every child has a unique response to parental pressure during mealtime, especially in their regulatory and appetitive tendencies,” Medel said.
Hence, there is a need for mothers to keep their kids excited for mealtimes. In a Facebook post, the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute said that kids should eat a variety of foods every day to get the nutrients needed by the body. However, moms know that’s easier said than done.
Breaking the Cycle
What should a busy mom do? Many Filipinos online suggest adding an ingredient that can bring excitement to everyday dishes. A couple of Pinoy mothers provide a simple yet effective answer: cheese.
Cheese isn’t just a tasty addition to any dish; it’s a flavor powerhouse that can elevate meals and fight off food fatigue.
Eden Cheese, a beloved brand among Filipino families, understands the challenge of “sawa.” Its creamy and “malinamnam” goodness is here
to help moms rediscover the joy in mealtimes.

FOR many singersongwriters, the act of songwriting serves as a lifeline to cling to—something that keeps them sane during tough times or a means of escape during moments of dread.
It becomes a type of platform to lay out their thoughts and emotions, with each note and lyric carrying a profound invocation that they may usually find difficult to express directly.
While it takes both talent and skill to harness one’s ability to convey their truest emotions through a song, some bear the natural affinity for easily crafting one that satisfyingly captures their musings.
Such an ability is something that R&B singer-songwriter Jikamarie typically utilizes in her songs. Born to a family with both a talent and a love for music, Jikamarie has long been enamored with the act of songwriting and performing.
At the backstage of Brooklyn Warehouse following her performance at the Rakuten Viber Backstage Pass Live 2024 last Nov. 15, Jikamarie told Manila Standard Entertainment how her journey towards pursuing her dreams of becoming a singersongwriter began.
“I’ve written a lot of songs during all the stages of my life. I got into it a lot more during the pandemic when I had a lot of time to myself, which was also when my pining to fully pursue music began,” said Jikamarie.
In 2021, Jikamarie released her debut single “Lutang,” which was produced by her brother Ken Ponce, who shared her desire to pursue music as both of them were inspired by their musicallyinclined parents that met each other through their college band.
“Every moment of our childhood was filled with music so when the lockdown came about and we were forced to stay inside, that was when we finally made our music,” said Jikamarie.
Since then, Jikamarie has released several singles like “Kailangan ko ng…,” “aking buwan,” “KISLAP,” “the sun is you,” “HALIMAW,” “Balang Araw,” “Bulong,” “HINAHANAP-HANAP,” and “lito,” which eventually led to the release of her “LOVER G!RL” EP last Jan. 12. As of writing, Jikamarie has around 242,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with “Lutang” reaching up to nearly 27 million total listens.
Drawing inspiration from her own experiences for every song she writes, Jikamarie makes it a point to stay true to herself and utilize the medium to express how she truly feels. This especially rings true in her upcoming single “Pangalan,”

which is about being unable to forget a person long after they left your life and is set to be released on Nov. 29.
While taking only one night to write about 70% of the song, Jikamarie shared that it was one of the most emotional pieces she has ever written to date.
“After I wrote that song, I said I was never gonna release it because it’s too vulnerable and personal. But then I thought it would be a waste because someone might come across it and find comfort in it,” she said. While Jikamarie continued to
hone her craft as a talented singersongwriter for the past three years, she admitted to still being surprised to see how much she has evolved from the shy person she once was. From her first gig during the album launch of Filipino rock supergroup Party Pace in 2022 to opening for Coldplay during their concert earlier this year, Jikamarie has grown so much as an artist.
As she passionately pursues her journey within the local music scene, Jikamarie urges those who dream of pursuing their passions to push
forward no matter what adversity, be it internal or external, may come their way.
“Don’t stop. You have forever in front of you. If you stop, how are you gonna see the end of it? If you think you’re not good enough, you’re eventually gonna get better if you keep on going so why stop now?” she said.

SPARKLE artist Seb Pajarillo got personal on his second single, “Dati Pa”, released on Friday, November 22, under GMA Music. The soulful track dives deep into themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, showcasing a more vulnerable side of the singer-
Speaking to Manila Standard Entertainment, Seb shared how the song’s poignant lyrics hit close to
“When GMA Playlist pitched a list of songs to me, this stood out the most. I could say that this song really feels like the moment when I was still in the process of moving on from a relationship,” said Seb.
Reflecting on a past three-year relationship, the 21-year-old artist revealed how he resonated with the song’s story. Despite moving on, the emotions came rushing back when he first heard the track.
“I had a relationship before where I had a really hard time moving on. I kept thinking, ‘Where did I go wrong? Can we just go back to how we used to be?’ And then, I heard this song, and I was like, ‘This is very close to me. Why does it feel like I’m going back to that time? Even though I’ve already moved on,” he continued.
“That’s why the process of recording was okay and became easier. Because my feelings and emotions from before were still there. So, I understood it better and could sing it with more pain,” Seb added.
“Dati Pa” also marked a shift in Seb’s artistic journey, contrasting sharply with his debut single, “Want You”. While his first track captured the intensity of falling in love and making sacrifices, “Dati Pa” explores the aftermath of lost love.
“Compared to my first single, ‘Want You’, which talks more about being in love and being willing to sacrifice everything—really being deeply in love with someone. In contrast, ‘Dati Pa’ conveys a different emotion or feeling. The rhythm is also very different, much slower compared to ‘Want You’. And this really challenges my vocal skills,” he explained.
“Dati Pa” is now available for streaming on various digital platforms.

BORACAY’S LUXURY OFFERINGS FOR MORE DISCERNING TRAVELERS
By Nickie Wang
KNOWN for its turquoise waters and white sand beaches, Boracay never fails to draw tourists with its exciting nightlife, water sports, familyfriendly events, and picturesque vistas and hotels. The island offers a range of dining alternatives, wellness services, and spa retreats for visitors looking for peace and quiet.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco recognized Boracay’s global appeal, pointing to its numerous natural attractions and hospitality services. She pointed out that Boracay’s ranking as “Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination” shows that it can host a variety of travelers, including luxury seekers, party animals, and families. According to Frasco, recent projects for the island include the construction of a Tourist First Aid Facility and initiatives to make Boracay a Muslim-friendly destination.
Boracay’s reputation as a top travel destination for all types of tourists is upheld by its unique combination of luxury, adventure, and leisure. That’s why it came as no surprise that the island paradise earned another global distinction.
Boracay was named “Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination” at the World Travel Awards (WTA) Asia and
NUSTAR Resort Cebu has introduced a revamped design for its NUSTAR Rewards cards at a themed event that included interactive exhibits and performances.
The event, held at the resort’s ballroom, showcased immersive LED installations and 360-degree graphics inspired by a “universe” concept. Guests were welcomed with photo opportunities featuring the NUSTAR facade and a dramatic card reveal accompanied by live narration and runway appearances by body-painted models.
The evening also included performances by DJ Divine Maitland-Smith and featured an array of refreshments, combining entertainment and culinary offerings in the luxury setting.
The new card tiers—Star, Sky, Sun, Zodiac, and Universe— replace the previous Classic, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and VIP Elite levels. The updated program emphasizes personalized experiences and expanded privileges, including points-earning rates, dining and retail offers, and exclusive birthday rewards. Alan Teo, NUSTAR’s representative, said the revamped rewards aim to provide members with an elevated experience.
“There’s no doubt that Boracay is one of our top tourist destinations. Year after year, it continues to attract hordes of tourists from various parts of the world,” said Frasco. “It’s not just for partygoers or families, it’s also for luxury travelers who seek premium experiences. We aim to welcome all types of travelers to Boracay so that more people will be able to experience its beauty.”
The WTA also recognized the Philippines in several categories, including Asia’s Leading Beach Destination, Dive Destination, and Island Destination. Intramuros was
title of Asia’s Leading Wedding Destination. The “Love the Philippines” campaign and Secretary Frasco’s leadership in tourism governance were also honored.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) has undertaken projects to improve visitor safety and inclusivity. A Hyperbaric Chamber Center was opened earlier this year,
upscale accommodations, fine dining, and private experiences such as helicopter rides, luxury yacht tours, and secluded beach visits. Wellness enthusiasts can enjoy premium spa treatments and yoga sessions by the beach. Romantic sunset cruises with food, drinks, and live music remain a popular choice for visitors seeking memorable moments.
