China intensifies WPS incursions: Deploys chopper, new CCG vessel

CHINA has beefed up its presence in the West Philippine Sea, deploying a People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN) helicopter as well as another China Coast Guard (CCG) ship, which Manila described as “provocative” actions. This as the Philippine Coast Guard continued to challenge the biggest CCG vessel 5901, dubbed “The Monster,” which moved to 90 nautical miles offshore of Zambales on Wednesday.

AGGRESSIVE

“Despite the PCG’s efforts to address the illegal presence of the CCG vessel through measured law enforcement operations, the People’s Republic of China has provocatively deployed a People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) helicopter, tail number 47, which hovered above the PCG vessel,” PCG spokesperson for the WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela said.

PCG’s BRP Cabra has been shadowing CCG 5901 since it came as close to about 50 nauti-

‘No lockdowns amid HMPV’

DOH: Virus not new, with mild symptoms like common cold

THERE is no need to impose lockdowns or border closures amid recent reports of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, the Department of Health on Wednesday said.

This as the World Health Organization said the HMPV is not a new virus and that the upward trend during the winter “is within the range expected for this time of year.”

“These increases are typically caused by seasonal epidemics of respiratory pathogens such as seasonal influenza and other common respiratory viruses, including hMPV, as well as mycoplasma pneumoniae...The co-circulation of multiple respiratory pathogens during the winter season can sometimes cause an increased burden on health care sys-

tems treating sick persons,” the WHO said in its situationer.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said HMPV typically results in mild symptoms similar to those of common colds.

“HMPV is not a new virus. We have been able to identify it for quite some time. Its symptoms are generally mild. Similar to the common cold, HMPV typically resolves on its own, provided that the immune system is robust,” Herbosa said.

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) exempted 28 Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) programs from the 2025 midterm elections’ spending ban, subject to conditions tagged for “strict compliance.” Comelec Chairman George Garcia on Wednesday said the poll body approved exempting the Ayuda Para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP), Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), and the Supplementary Feeding Program, among others, at the DSWD’s request. For AKAP alone, the Comelec approved an exemption amounting to

US solons want longer detention for illegals charged with crimes

US LAWMAKERS voted Tuesday to expand pre-trial incarceration for foreign criminal suspects as a new Congress unified under Republican control works to deliver on Donald Trump’s vow to crack down on illegal immigration.

The Laken Riley Act, which calls for the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related crimes, is named for a 22-year-old student murdered by a Venezuelan man with no papers who was wanted for shoplifting.

“And we have a lot to do there to fix it—it’s an absolute disaster because of

“As promised, we’re starting today with

cal miles from the Luzon coastline over the weekend with its “intrusive partol” further east of Scarborough Shoal.

The “Monster” ship, however, was immediately replaced by CCG 3103, which left Guangdong province in China on Tuesday and headed to CCG 5901’s previous location.

“As of 3 PM today (Wednesday), CCG-3103 was detected by Canada’s Dark Vessel Detection at a distance of 60 nautical miles from Pundaquit, Zambales. This indicates that CCG3103 is likely serving as a replacement vessel for the monster ship, thereby sustaining its illegal presence within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone,” Tarriela said.

To address this development, PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan ordered the deployment of an Islander aircraft to confirm the presence of CCG 3103 in the area. BRP Cabra is also en route to the location of the new Chinese coast guard vessel to monitor and challenge its presence, Tarriela said.

“The Philippine Coast Guard remains resolutely committed to safeguarding our sovereign rights and will not allow the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard vessel to infringe upon our maritime jurisdiction,” Tarriela added.

The heightened incursions in the WPS came days after China warned the Philippines against acquiring a Typhon mid-range capability (MRC) missile system from the United States.

“Our message to the Philippines: China will not sit on its hands when its security interests are in danger or under threat. The Philippines will be hurting its own interests if it keeps refusing to change course,” China Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said late December.

Mao said that for the Philippines to maintain “strategic independence, good-neighborliness and friendship, and peaceful development,” it must remove the missile system.

The MRC missile system would allow the Philippine Army to protect vessels up to 370 kilometers or 200 nautical miles off the coast – the limit of the Philippines’ maritime entitlement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

He underscored the importance of practicing respiratory etiquette, including covering coughs with elbows and frequent hand washing, to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses during the colder months.

DOH spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo noted that while HMPV cases – first identified in 2001 – have surged, they remained lower than those recorded in 2023.

“The human metapneumovirus is not comparable to COVID-19, as it is not a novel virus. We are familiar with HMPV; therefore, there is no need to close our borders, as it does not spread aggressively even when present in our region,” Domingo said.

As of January 8, 2025, the Health department reported a total of 179,227 cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) for December 2024, reflecting a 17 percent decrease from the same period in 2023.

The leading causes of ILI in the Philippines include Rhinovirus, Enterovirus, and Influenza A, while HMPV

The legislation—Congress’s first bill of the new session—already passed the House last year, with Republicans keen to highlight what they described as weak border security policies from President Joe Biden.

It was stalled in the Democraticcontrolled Senate but is expected to get a vote as soon as Friday in the newlyinaugurated upper chamber, which flipped to the Republicans in November’s elections.

At least 284 HMPV cases were logged out from January 1, 2024 to December 21, 2024, with 10 positive cases recorded last month, indicating that HMPV is detected sporadically throughout the year without any significant clustering or unusual patterns, the DOH said.

In the US, cases of HMPV have also been on the rise since November 2024, with about 1.94 percent of weekly tests returning positive as of late December.

In Kuala Lumpur, the Philippine embassy urged Filipinos to remain vigilant, noting that at least 327 cases were reported in Malaysia in 2024, higher than the 225 recorded the previous year.

“This is a respiratory infection that usually feels like a common cold, with symptoms like cough, fever, and runny nose. However, in more serious cases, it can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia,” the embassy said in a statement.

Children under age five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of catching the virus.

As this developed, COVID-19 is still infecting and killing people across the globe -- though at far lower levels than at the height of the pandemic.

The bill will likely need at least eight opposition votes and could face a Democratic blockade, despite being co-sponsored by the party’s centrist Pennsylvania senator, John Fetterman.

A statement from House Minority Whip Katherine Clark’s office accused Republicans of “attempting to use a horrible tragedy for political gain” and said the bill would expand detentions without increasing funding.

In the end, 48 House Democrats voted for the legislation as advanced from the House by 264 votes to 159—a small increase from when it was last considered. AFP

Around 777 million COVID cases and more than seven million deaths have been officially recorded since the first infections emerged in December 2019, according to the WHO. However, the true toll is believed to be far higher.

In May 2023, the WHO declared the emergency phase of the pandemic was over.

Since then, the virus seems to have gradually become endemic, according to experts, with occasional resurgences similar to the flu—although less seasonal.

“The world wants to forget this pathogen that is still with us, and I think people want to put COVID in the past as if it’s over—and in many respects pretend it didn’t happen—because it has been so traumatic,” WHO pandemic preparedness director Maria Van Kerkhove said last month.

From October to November last year, there were more than 3,000 deaths from COVID across 27 countries, according to the WHO.

Since the Omicron variant emerged in November 2021, a succession of its subvariants have been replacing each other as the dominant strain around the world. At the moment, the Omicron variant KP.3.1.1 is the most common.

innocence

COMEDY actress Rufa Mae Quinto

broke her silence in relation to her involvement with the company Dermacare. In an exclusive interview with GMA News, Quinto maintained her innocence, emphasizing that she, too, was allegedly a victim of the company.

“I’m also a victim here, so we will face everything. Also, it’s not good because my reputation is being ruined here. That’s why now, I will face this to clear my name,” said Quinto. When asked if she would file countercharges, Quinto responded with her signature humor: “We will think about it. If I still have a mind.”

“Let’s finish this first. One at a time.

Because I just arrived from the US. So, one by one, step by step,” she added.

The actress also clarified her limited involvement with Dermacare, claiming she was not paid and had her endorsement contract canceled.

“They also canceled me as an endorser. I haven’t met or known them. In fact, I also wasn’t paid. All the checks bounced,” the comedy actress revealed. Quinto then turned into a serious tone, urging authorities and the public to direct their attention to the company’s real operators.

“Who they should look for is the owner. I hope you highlight who is the real suspect here. Just because you’re an artist, it doesn’t mean you’re always in the news,” she stated.

Garcia said the exemptions granted to DSWD programs, including those of other agencies performing similar functions, allow the “release, disbursement or expenditure of public funds” 45 days before a regular election and 30 days before a special election.

However, he stressed that politicians running for public office may not participate in distributing assistance to programs’ intended beneficiaries.

law department. He noted that the Comelec should be furnished with the guidelines “as committed by the DSWD in public pronouncements” and that they should be faithfully adhered to.

The DSWD should also submit a periodic written report of the disbursements made.

The Comelec chief also said that the issuance of a certificate of exemption “shall not prevent the conduct of preliminary investigation in cases where the prohibited acts” as described in the Omnibus Election Code occur.

It can be recalled that DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian submitted the agency’s exemption request last December 19, covering the department’s “promotive and protective services pro-

Meanwhile, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) expects the guidelines for AKAP to be finalized by the end of the month, with added safeguards to ensure the efficient use of public funds.

In a media forum Wednesday, Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), and the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) have already started crafting the improved guidelines of the program.

“It should be ready next week. They are finalizing it [guidelines], they just have to work on it this week. By the end of January, it would be finished,” she said in a mixture of Filipino and English.

“It is our prayer that when we meet again next time, the Church will designate Jan. 9 as a national feast in honor of our beloved Black Nazarene,” Sescon said.

“We want it to be a national feast for the Church so it is up to the bishops and the Pope to discuss this,” he added. The feast, initially a parochial celebration, has organically spread and is now celebrated by devotees across the country and even abroad.

Advincula, in a letter to the CBCP in May 2023, pointed out that in the absence of a specific national liturgical directive, the celebrations be -

come dependent on the priests or the community.

“Making it a national feast will definitely bring order and most especially joy to the millions of devotees, particularly those who cannot go to Quiapo,” the cardinal wrote.

As this developed, the Southern Police District (SPD) deployed 1,500 officers to work with other law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of millions of devotees expected to attend the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila today.

“The Feast of the Black Nazarene is a celebration of faith, hope, and unity— a testament to the devotion of Filipinos from all walks of life. As police officers, our role is to maintain peace and order while ensuring that every devotee can participate safely and without fear,”

This figure marks a significant increase from 46% in March 2024, indicating a worsening economic situation for many Filipino families.

The survey found that self-rated poverty has been steadily rising for three

National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said in a statement that the “labor market remains robust, with consistently high employment rates and reduced underemployment,”

SPD Director Brig. Gen. Manuel Abrugena said.

Abrugena urged his officers to approach their duties with empathy and humility, emphasizing the event’s deep spiritual significance.

Police officers will be augmented by personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to ensure the safety of devotees throughout the long procession route.

“We have deployed 1,200 personnel specifically for the procession, including those responsible for maintaining cleanliness along the route immediately after the procession passes through,” MMDA Chairman Don Artes said.

“We appeal to our fellow citizens not to throw trash that could cause injury or harm to other devotees who will participate in the procession on Thursday, par-

ticularly since many will be joining the Traslacion barefoot,” he added.

The MMDA has put in place a Mobile Command Center and First Aid Station along the route.

Meanwhile, hospitals in Metro Manila and nearby regions have been under Code White Alert since Sunday and will remain so until Friday in anticipation of health emergencies amid the celebration of the Feast of Jesus Nazareno and the annual Traslacion.

In a statement, the Department of Health (DOH) said this is to ensure that all designated medical personnel, equipment and facilities in NCR and neighboring regions such as Central Luzon and CALABARZON are on standby to quickly respond to emergencies or related incidents on health during large religious gatherings.

However, partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rains will likely greet Black Nazarene devotees along the route of the ‘Traslacion’ today. Based on its weather bulletin on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the devotees must brace for light showers during the ‘Traslacion’ caused by the northeast m9nsoon or “hanging Amihan.” Weather specialist Benison Estareja said Metro Manila, the Ilocos region and the rest of Calabarzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains until January 10. Localized thunderstorms may also bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the rest of the country.

Empowering educators in Bagong Pilipinas

Teachers get full P20,000 service recognition incentive under PBBM

IN A groundbreaking gesture, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. demonstrated his commitment to uplifting public school teachers by granting full Service Recognition Incentive (SRI) worth PhP20,000 in 2024.

This marks a significant improvement from previous years, with the SRI raised from PhP15,000 in 2022 to PhP18,000 in 2023, before reaching the current PhP20,000. Under the Marcos administration, public school teachers have enjoyed enhancements in their financial and non-financial benefits, including salary increases, allowances, overload pay, vacation leave, and medical support.

On December 13, 2024, Budget Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman hailed this initiative, saying, “For the first time in history, DepEd teachers will receive their full SRI. From PhP15,000 in 2022 to PhP18,000 in 2023, it will now be PhP20,000 in 2024. We stand with the President in recognizing the sacrifices of our educators, who serve as second parents to our youth.”

The SRI is a yearly financial incentive aimed at acknowledging the unwavering dedication of government employees to public service. Recognizing the vital role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future, the President directed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure the successful implementation of the SRI increase.

‘May SRI na!’

Secretary Pangandaman expressed gratitude to President Marcos, stating, “We thank President Bongbong Marcos for approving the directive to provide the SRI to all government workers.”

President Marcos signed Administrative Order No. 27, which authorized the release of the SRI to all eligible government employees for Fiscal Year 2024.

Grateful public school teachers

For Teacher Irish Ivan Balde of Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science, the SRI brings immense relief; “I am deeply grateful to our government, especially to President Marcos, for granting us the SRI. This support significantly eases our daily needs and highlights efforts to improve teachers’ health benefits.”

“Our teachers are the backbone of our education system, nurturing the youth to become the future leaders and changemakers of our nation. They also uphold our democratic values, not only during elections but as lifelong mentors to the younger generation,” President Marcos emphasized during the National Teachers’ Day celebration in October 2024.

The President underscored how recent reforms have positively impacted the education sector, citing the experience of Sorayda Areola, a teacher from La Union. Areola shared how her salary increase and medical allowance provided her with peace of mind. President Marcos had signed Executive Order No. 64, which included a PhP7,000 annual medical allowance for public school teachers.

“Now, teachers like Sorayda can focus on teaching, secure in the knowledge that the government values their contributions,” the President remarked. Ensuring educators’ financial capacity

The Marcos administration’s strides to elevate teachers’ compensation include notable milestones.

For instance, during his 2024 State of the Nation Address, President Marcos announced a PhP70 billion allocation for the first and second tranches of salary increases, benefiting 1.35 million government employees, including teachers.

The DBM further outlined how this salary increase benefits subprofessionals, professionals, and

executive personnel. Additionally, the “Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act,” signed in June 2024, provides a tax-free teaching allowance of PhP5,000 for School Year 2024–2025, increasing to PhP10,000 in the next school year. Healthcare benefits were also boosted, with Executive Order No. 64 introducing an annual medical allowance of PhP7,000—a 1,300% increase from the previous PhP500. Teachers’ vacation credits were doubled to 30 days under DepEd Order No. 13, 2024, allowing them to better manage personal and health-related absences.

The introduction of overload pay through DepEd Order No. 05, 2024, and the expansion of the Special Hardship Allowance (SHA) to more teachers further demonstrate the administration’s focus on easing teachers’ workloads and recognizing their dedication.

“With the SHA, an estimated 16,532 additional teachers now qualify for allowances equivalent to 25% of their monthly salaries,” shared Secretary Angara, highlighting the government’s efforts to broaden eligibility and extend assistance to teachers in hardship posts.

Currently, a Teacher I earns an average monthly income of PhP33,071.77, which includes allowances, bonuses, and incentives. Teachers at higher levels, such as Teacher II and III, also see competitive earnings, reflecting the administration’s ongoing commitment to improving their financial well-being.

Easing the teachers’ burden President Marcos acknowledged the sacrifices teachers make during the signing of the “Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act” in June 2024. “It must take an incredible amount of love to put your students’ needs above your own financial concerns. This new law institutionalizes an annual teaching allowance and gradually increases it, ensuring it remains tax-free,” he said.

The DepEd, under Secretary Angara, continues to champion initiatives that uplift educators, marking a significant step toward recognizing their invaluable role in nation-building.

Positive impact on teachers Teacher Imelda CompetenteRegala of Dr. Alejandro Albert Elementary School in Manila shared her gratitude, saying, “We thank the President for increasing our salaries. This initiative supports teachers as molders of future generations and demonstrates the administration’s commitment to the nation’s greatest resource—its people.”

Similarly, Teacher Allan Ross Abelon of Alaminos City expressed his appreciation: “I’m truly grateful for the additional salary and the release of the SRI. These benefits acknowledge the hard work of teachers and provide much-needed financial relief.”

Future directions

As the Marcos administration continues its reforms, Secretary Angara emphasized, “A wellcompensated and motivated teaching force is crucial to nurturing the next generation of Filipinos and building a brighter future for the country.”

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. calls on legislators from both houses of Congress to continue working together with the executive branch to improve people’s lives and to craft laws based on foresight as he led the ceremonial signing at the Palace of the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act which authorizes an increase in the annual teaching allowance for public school teachers from P5,000 to P10,000 beginning in school year 2025-2026. Pagasa forecasts cloudy skies, more rains in Luzon and Visayas

THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasts cloudy skies and rains in parts of Luzon and Visayas on Wednesday.

A shear line will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms to Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and Quezon.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan will bring cloudy skies with rains to Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Central Luzon.

Residents in these areas are advised to be vigilant for possible flash floods and landslides due to moderate to heavy rains. The amihan will also bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains to Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, and the rest of CALABARZON.

Localized thunderstorms will cause partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the rest of the country.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) meawhile reported numerous flight cancellations on January 8 due to poor weather conditions.

At Virac Airport, two Cebu Pacific (CEB) flights (MNL-VRCMNL) have been suspended, affecting 311 passengers. Additionally, at Naga Airport, the first two flights of CEB’s sister airline CebGo — DG 6113 and DG 6114 (MNL-WNPMNL) — were also canceled, impacting 134 passengers.

CebGo flights DG 6080 and DG 6081 have also been canceled at Masbate Airport. CAAP information officer Bea Bernardo said aviation personnel are assisting affected passengers with rebooking and refund procedures, as well as baggage claims and security support. Joel E. Zurbano

She said CAAP remains on standby following these cancellations, which have caused delays and inconveniences for travelers. “We are actively monitoring weather forecasts to ensure we can prepare proactively.” Area managers have been instructed to communicate clearly and promptly with passengers and to provide the necessary assistance to help mitigate disruptions and support affected travelers effectively.

Marcos hails IRR signing of seafarers’ Magna Carta

PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday witnessed the ceremonial signing of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) for the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, marking a historic milestone in safeguarding the rights and welfare of the country’s maritime workforce.

The event was held at Malacañang Palace, with Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Maritime Industry Authority Administrator Sonia Malaluan as signatories. The Magna Carta, officially known as

Republic Act No. 12021, provides comprehensive legal protections for seafarers, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect throughout their careers. The law aims to address longstanding challenges in the maritime sector while

elevating the global competitiveness of Filipino seafarers.

President Marcos highlighted the significance of the IRR signing, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of the country’s maritime workers.

Speaking at the ceremony, he underscored the collaborative efforts of government agencies and maritime stakeholders in crafting the regulations.

“Only three months after I signed the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, we now witness the signing of its Implementing Rules and Regulations. This reinforces our commitment to ensuring the welfare of our seafarers,” Mr. Marcos said.

Binay pledges to replicate Makati success

MAKATI City mayor and senatorial aspirant Abigail Binay has pledged to replicate the city’s successful programs at the national level to ensure every Filipino has access to better healthcare, education, and livelihood.

Speaking at the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Inc. (FFCCCI), Binay shared her vision of a future where everyone can enjoy tangible benefits from economic growth, with no one left behind.

She believes that through proper budget allocations or public-private partnerships (PPPs), Makati’s successful programs can be scaled for

nationwide implementation.

Binay said her city’s experience has demonstrated how partnerships with the private sector can drive transformative progress, from healthcare to infrastructure, delivering immense benefits for residents.

“These programs are not luxuries—they are necessities that every Filipino deserves. There is no reason why these benefits cannot be implemented nationwide, especially for the economically disadvantaged,” she said.

The mayor said Makati’s success is proof that transformative programs are not only possible but also scalable. “Programs like the Yellow Card, Project FREE, Project FEED, and our job generation initiatives can

be blueprints for national progress,” she said.

“These are not distant dreams— they are achievable goals we can reach with the right priorities, partnerships, and shared commitment to progress,” she added.

Binay said good governance is essential for achieving inclusive progress, as it ensures that resources are used wisely, systems are streamlined, and decisions are made with the welfare of the community at its core.

The city’s success is attributed to health, education, good governance, and inclusive economic growth, referred to as the “four pillars symbolizing the power of sustained and people-centered governance.”

Lawmakers deliberate on national gov’t rightsizing bill

SENATE President Francis Escudero on Tuesday led a consultative meeting to discuss the Senate Bill No. 890, known as the “Rightsizing the National Government Act of 2022.” The bill is part of the National Government Rightsizing Program (NGRP), a priority of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration aimed at streamlining government operations to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

“With rightsizing, you’re talking of the abolition of certain positions and offices,” Senator Escudero clarified. During the session, the Depart-

ment of Budget and Management (DBM) proposed that the government could save billions through rightsizing.

DBM Undersecretary Wilford Wong indicated that rightsizing 3% of government positions could yield savings of approximately P3 billion, while a 7% reduction might result in up to P8.7 billion in savings.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian expressed that these figures are modest compared to the national budget of P6.3 trillion for 2025.

“I’m sure as we go along, we are going to see more and that amount will probably increase or be ad-

NAIA says airport lost luggage not for sale

THE management of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Wednesday issued a warning to the public about engaging with fake online accounts, specifically those claiming that lost luggage at the airport is for sale.

“We have noticed online posts falsely claiming that abandoned luggage is being sold at NAIA for just P125. This is not true. NAIA does not conduct auctions or sales for abandoned luggage or prohibited items. These posts are part of a scam that misuses NAIA’s name to mislead the public,” the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) said. To protect the public, the NNIC advised people not to share personal information or engage with these fraudulent posts or pages. The airport’s private operator likewise urged individuals to report these posts or pages to prevent others from being misled and to verify information about NAIA only through official channels: Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) via @ newnaiaph and the official website via www.newnaia.com.ph.

“These false claims, often promoted as sponsored posts, demonstrate the lengths scammers will go to deceive people. NAIA strictly follows established procedures for handling lost and found items, as well as confiscated security-prohibited items, in compliance with regulations. There are no auctions or sales of these items,” the NNIC said. Joel E. Zurbano OCD to evacuees: Not safe to return

THE Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Tuesday cautioned evacuees that it is still unsafe to return to their homes within the six-kilometer extended danger zone of Mt. Kanlaon.

“As much as possible, we at the Office of Civil Defense, along with other government agencies like Phivolcs, don’t want you to be in trouble,” Raul Fernandez, chair of Task Force Kanlaon and Director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Western Visayas said. He emphasized the unpredictability of volcanic activity, noting that some individuals believe they understand Kanlaon’s behavior. “But then there’s always a first time,” he warned. Fernandez referenced the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, which had been dormant for 600 years before erupting and causing widespread devastation. “People were saying: ‘Pinatubo hasn’t erupted.’ It did, so there’s always a first time. And if that happens with Kanlaon, we might become victims,” he cautioned.

He reassured evacuees not to overly worry about their livelihoods at this time, as government assistance is available. “We will help each other. That’s precisely the reason why we’re here in your municipalities and cities—to show you that we have the support of the President,” he added. Rex Espiritu

The group’s party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas questioned the state pension fund’s contribution rate increase, saying the members must not bear the brunt of the agency’s shortcomings.

She called the hike as antipoor. The increase in the contributions of members and employers of up to 15 percent took effect this January 2025. The SSS cited Republic Act No. 11199 or Social Security Act of 2018 that a 1 percent contribution increase would be imposed on SSS members every two years starting from 12%

IT HAS become customary for us that every January, we go about counting our human losses both in deaths and wounded because of the way we celebrate the coming of the New Year.

THE New Year is now upon us. Looking back at 2024, it was quitea challenging year. From the looks of it, 2025 will be the same with a lot more uncertainties.

The world economy will continue to be beset with challenges brought about by many unsettled geopolitical issues, not to mention the effects of climate change which many countries are now experiencing.

Regrettably, the casualties this year is 39 percent higher than last year’s and we are not yet done counting.

Why we continue this kind of revelry and not try to switch to a more wholesome celebration that will not destroy human lives is inexplicable.

Think of the thousands of people whose lives have been ruined because of firecrackers over the years.

For those whose wounds are not serious, the experience would certainly be a valuable and unforgettable lesson.

One could say that we are living in a perilous world which even the ordinary citizens realize as shown in the latest poll. Although majority are confident with the New Year, they view it with a lot of trepidation.. Although the country has been projected to be one of several countries that will be able to buck the economic headwinds, it will not be entirely smooth sailing.

For those who have lost arms, fingers or other parts of their bodies, they will have to try their best to restart their lives as normally as they possibly can. But for those who died, they will now unfortunately simply be part of the statistics.

In the geopolitical arena, the world is viewing the second Trump term with apprehension, given his governing style.

So far, four people have died this year due to firecrackers. One was a 44-year-old individual who tried to check why the firecracker he lighted did not explode.

This is perhaps because while still not in office, he has been issuing statements that have flustered some countries like Panama when he said he wants the United States to take back control of the Panama Canal and his wanting to buy Greenland.

Instead of keeping his distance, he tried to look into the container where he dropped the powerful firecracker and, just as he did, it exploded into his face eventually causing his death.

We sympathize with his family, but what can we really do except to say that he should have known better. Tragically, most of the victims are minors.

Regret or pagsisisi as the old saying goes always comes after what has happened and not before.

Yet, we continue with this madness. We cannot seem to stop.

He has also raised the possibility of increasing the tariffs of goods being sold to the US notably from Mexico, China and Canada, signaling the likelihood of a trade war with China. Whether he is serious with all his pronouncements or just a bluster, we will have to wait and see. One thing for certain. however, is with Trump, one can never be sure because of his unpredictability. He likes to keep people guessing as he used to say during his first term in office.

Part of the reason is probably because firecrackers have become so ingrained in the way we Filipinos celebrate the New Year that government officials especially at the local level are reluctant to take a determined and comprehensive effort to change this culture of celebration.

In our neck of the woods, all these seem distant to the ordinary citizens who simply want to wish for a New Year with more opportunities so they can improve their lives and that of their families. 2025, however, happens to be a political year for the country.

They do not like to be the killjoy to the community or their families.

There were, however, some years when the government did try to strictly enforce the firecracker ban and the casualties during those years were lower.

Lately it started to creep up because people seem to be attracted with new and more powerful firecracker products like “good-bye Philippines” for instance.

In spite of police efforts to go after firecracker manufacturers that produce

It is not only going to be an election year but there is also a looming impeachment trial if Congress will push thru with the three impeachment complaints filed against our Vice President. Instead of our leaders focusing their efforts on the economic well-being of the masses, the year might just start with a fractious political dogfight. If that happens, months will have to be spent on the impeachment process further dividing the nation.

prohibited products, enticing and more powerful firecrackers which people want to try continue to be available thru online marketing making apprehension harder.

Perhaps, the administration should set aside the impeachment and concentrate first on the midterm elections which is a very necessary process in our democratic system of government.

After the elections, if the new Congress would still want to pursue the impeachment process, then by all means they can go on with it but, hopefully, the results of the elections will help ease tensions between the two political camps.

But can we ever change the way we celebrate the New Year in a way that will not result in deaths and ruined lives?

From what I have observed, it can be done but that will take a determined effort, the imagination to develop some alternative form of revelries the public can enjoy and the willingness of local government officials to spend for other forms of celebrations.

One is government supervised fireworks display where the public can go and watch.

The world economy will continue to be beset with challenges brought about by many unsettled geopolitical issues

Can we ever change the way we celebrate the New Year in a way that will not result in deaths and ruined lives?

Doing both almost at the same time frame would be chaotic for the country which badly needs a breather from too much politics.

Another issue our leaders should not forget is the WPS issue with our giant neighbor China and the continuing Taiwan tension which might get us involved.

This was done in Roxas Boulevard at one time and attracted a sizable number of people.

Unfortunately, this was discontinued probably because of costs and lack of other activities like a musical concert to complement the fireworks display.

These two situations cannot be ignored and simply swept under the rug and pretend as if nothing is happening.

A fireworks display takes only about 20-30 minutes at the most after which people will have to leave.

But people like to linger longer and a musical concert can take the space.

Our leaders must develop a united stance on the WPS issue. I refer to both sides of the political divide. Right now, there is no consensus among our leaders and this division is clearly being exploited by those who want to do the country harm.

The other important issue is the just concluded Congressional hearings.

All these need planning and will certainly cost a lot of money but should be better than seeing most of the hospitals being placed on emergency footing to treat the victims of firecrackers.

We can also take a page at the way New Yorkers wait for their New Year count down which attracts people from round the world.

After the much applauded job that Congress did in those hearings, both Houses went ahead and spoiled it by rewarding themselves in the 2025 national budget.

This was probably to fortify themselves for the upcoming elections. What were all those investigations all about?

If corruption was the reason, why do a damn thing that would certainly invite severe criticisms from watchdogs?

Surely our local governments can be as imaginative and think of something similar to New York so that our New Year revelry can be wholesome without anyone getting hurt and not have something resembling a battlefield.

The budget eventually signed by the President, of course, removed about P194-b in the budget. Were those the illegal insertions?

It is painful watching those TV footages where young boys lose their fingers or entire arms.

Let’s hope but these just seem to show that nothing much has changed.

Let’s hope that the 2026 celebrations will be wholesome with no one getting hurt.

Disinformation experts slam Meta decision to end US fact-checking

WASHINGTON, DC—Tech giant

2024: When PH politics reached peak surrealism

IN THE pandemonium that is 2024, the Philippines has rebranded democracy into a high-stakes reality show: ‘Who Wants to Be a Scapegoat?’

Meta’s shock announcement that it is ending its US fact-checking program triggered scathing criticism Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) from disinformation researchers who warned it risked opening the floodgates for false narratives.

The GMA Integrated News Yearend Report doubles as an instruction manual for surviving a plot twist every six hours. Think The Hunger Games—but with more press conferences and fewer rules.

Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the company was going to “get rid” of its third-party fact-checkers in the United States, in a sweeping policy shift that analysts saw as an attempt to appease US Presidentelect Donald Trump.

Let’s begin with Mother Nature, who seems to have a better attendance record than most elected officials.

“This is a major step back for content moderation at a time when disinformation and harmful content are evolving faster than ever,” said Ross Burley, cofounder of the nonprofit Centre for Information Resilience.

A record-breaking number of typhoons made landfall this year, turning disaster response into the nation’s favorite spectator sport. “We’re building resilience,” claimed one official, presumably while strapping a snorkel onto a barangay captain.

As an alternative, Zuckerberg said Meta’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram, would use “Community Notes similar to X” in the United States.

surfaced after the VP reportedly described the president’s leadership style as “passive-aggressive,” while the president countered by noting the VP’s approach to governance was “more aggressive than passive.”

Analysts predict their 2025 campaign slogans will be: “Unity in Division” and “Divided We Stand.”

Community Notes is a crowdsourced moderation tool that X has promoted as the way for users to add context to posts, but researchers have repeatedly questioned its effectiveness in combating falsehoods.

WTHOSE posting false and malicious content on social media platforms may soon have to think twice before doing so, if the plan of the House of Representatives to conduct a joint investigation by the panels on public order, information and communications technology, and public information goes at full throttle.

HAT is Beijing up to?

After the Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia kept harassing and intimidating our own Coast Guard and Navy within our Exclusive Economic Zone in the West Philippine Sea with deliberate ramming, military-grade laser beams and water cannons, the Chinese government appears to be stepping up intelligence gathering and espionage activities within our shores.

The three committees are worried the rapid growth of social media platforms has allowed the dissemination of content that can mislead the public, damage individual reputations, raise distrust in institutions, and disrupt public discourse.

That’s the obvious conclusion from the recent recovery by some fisherfolk of an underwater drone with Chinese markings in the waters off San Pascual town in Masbate province.

The news report quoted an oceanographer and professor at the University of the Philippines DilimanMarine Science Institute as saying it would be difficult to tell whether a particular drone was used for military surveillance or research until “the type of data it had collected (had been) accessed. Both objectives (ocean research and surveillance) may use the same technologies.”

It is true, as the police office in the Bicol region said, the recovery of the underwater drone has significant implications, as it provides insights into advanced underwater technology and naval capabilities.

Authorities are closely examining the device as to its origin and to assess its potential impact on national security and maritime operations.

The House probe will complement ongoing efforts by the executive branch to strengthen cybersecurity. The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, an attached agency of the Department of Information and Communications Technology is responsible for all functions related to cybersecurity.

On the part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, it declared its full commitment “to ensuring the safety and security of our maritime domain, with all necessary resources mobilized to address similar and other situations with the utmost diligence.”

The discovery of the Chinese underwater drone is disturbing as it could indicate Beijing’s deliberate intrusion in Philippine waters and pose a grave threat to our national sovereignty.

The CICC recently warned social media users to disclose deepfakes in posts or face charges. The agency said those using deepfake technology to post content on social media are required to clearly disclose that the material is not real or they could face prosecution under the cybercrime law.

The CICC admits the difficulty in curbing the spread of deepfakes, especially in relation to this year’s midterm elections, but emphasized the government has the tools and expertise to identify and pursue those responsible for creating and distributing deceptive content.

In recent years, Chinese research vessels had been spotted in the eastern side of the Philippines, including waters near the resource-rich Philippine (formerly Benham) Rise.

In April 2024, a Chinese-flagged research vessel was seen within the vicinity northeast of Viga in Catanduanes province.

This should serve as a warning to those who want to misuse social media for criminal and dark ends that the government will run after them— and send them to jail.

Fact-checking and disinformation research have long been a hot-button issue in a hyperpolarized political climate in the United States, with conservative US advocates saying they were a tool to curtail free speech and censor right-wing content.

It’s unclear whether this resilience training extends to the country’s infrastructure, last seen floating toward the West Philippine Sea.

In Philippine politics hypocrisy is less of a bug and more of a feature

Meta’s program and external grants have been “predominant revenue streams” for global fact-checkers, according to a 2023 survey by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) of 137 organizations across dozens of countries.

‘Abdication’ of responsibility

“You wouldn’t rely on just anyone to stop your toilet from leaking, but Meta now seeks to rely on just anyone to stop misinformation from spreading on their platforms,” Michael Wagner, from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told AFP.

The Duterte drug war made a dramatic return to center stage this year, courtesy of the International Criminal Court.

The decision will also “hurt social media users who are looking for accurate, reliable information to make decisions about their everyday lives and interactions,” said IFCN director Angie Holan.

“Fear is a deterrent,” said one former official, apparently unaware he was auditioning for the role of a dystopian dictator in an unannounced sequel to 1984. Meanwhile, in a move that could redefine irony, the very individuals implicated in these killings now call for “due process” and “justice.”

‘Politics, not policy’ Aaron Sharockman, executive director of US fact-checking organization PolitiFact, rejected the contention that fact-checking was a tool to suppress free speech.

If nothing else, this year’s developments have proven that in Philippine politics hypocrisy is less of a bug and more of a feature.

A new soap opera

The role of US fact-checkers, he said, was to provide “additional speech and context to posts that journalists found to contain misinformation” and it was up to Meta to decide what penalties users faced.

In that program, content rated “false” is downgraded in news feeds so fewer people will see it and if someone tries to share that post, they are presented with an article explaining why it is misleading.

While the ICC continued its investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings, Congress launched its own probe, proving once again that two investigations are better than one—especially when they produce enough headlines to distract from other scandals.

“It’s unfortunate that this decision comes in the wake of external political pressure from a new administration and its supporters,” Holan added.

Wildfire sparks panicked evacuations in LA suburb

LOS ANGELES—A ferocious wildfire in a Los Angeles suburb burned buildings and sparked panicked evacuations Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila), as hurricane-force winds tore through the region.

Frightened residents abandoned their cars on one of the only roads in and out of the upscale Pacific Palisades area, fleeing on foot from the 1,260-acre (510-hectare) blaze engulfing an area crammed with multi-million dollar homes in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Firefighters used bulldozers to push dozens of vehicles -- including expensive models like BMWs, Teslas and Mercedes -- to one side, leaving many crumpled and with their alarms sounding. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief

Kristin Crowley said despite the chaotic evacuation, there were no immediate reports of any deaths or injuries.

Hundreds of firefighters swarmed the area, attacking the blaze from the ground and from the air, while crews worked in steep terrain to cut back vegetation and create firebreaks.

Around 30,000 people were ordered to evacuate the fast-spreading flames, which levelled multiple homes as they leapt large distances.

“We are not out of danger,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony

Marrone, at an afternoon press conference, adding that the winds are expected to pick up.

US President Joe Biden was briefed on the fire, and his team was in touch with local officials to offer federal assistance, the White House said.

The fire erupted mid-morning and swelled quickly, taking many residents by surprise.

One man, who gave his name as Gary, told broadcaster KTLA hot ashes were raining down on his community of Sea Ridge.

“There was smoke in the distance, and I was assured that it would not come over the hill... Five minutes later, it’s coming down the hill,” he said.

“Everyone panicked, that’s when everybody made a run and went to go and

pack their houses up.”

Evacuee Kelsey Trainor said she saw the fire explode in size as she was fleeing her home.

“By the time we got to the bottom of the hill, which is about two or three miles, there were flames on both sides of the road, and it became gridlocked,” she said.

“No-one knew what to do. Everyone was honking their horns. There’s flames all around you.

“I could see people walking with suitcases, with their dogs, children, an elderly woman was really visibly upset and in tears.”

Pacific Palisades resident Andrew Hires told AFP he got a text alerting him to the fire as his child was at the dentist about to have a tooth extracted. AFP

Venezuela arrests 2 Americans, 5 Colombians, 3 ‘mercenaries’

CARACAS—Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) announced the arrest of seven foreigners—including two Americans—whom he accused of being “mercenaries” trying to prevent him from being sworn-in for another six years in power.

Maduro said the Americans, two Colombian “hitmen” and three “mercenaries” from the war in Ukraine were involved in plotting unspecified “terrorist acts” ahead of his planned inauguration Friday.

“I am sure that in the next few hours they will confess,” Maduro said in a broadcast on state television, before declaring a mass deployment of police and military across the country.

The announcement of Americans being detained came just hours after President Joe Biden welcomed exiled Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia in the United States. During the meeting, Biden backed a “peaceful transfer back

to democratic rule” in Venezuela and warned against further repression inside the country.

The United States and several of Venezuela’s democratic neighbors believe Gonzalez Urrutia won a July presidential election by a landslide and that official results were falsified.

The opposition has called for “millions” of Venezuelans to turn out in protest Thursday to prevent Maduro from retaining power and being officially sworn in.

They face an uphill battle. The 62-year-old Maduro and his political mentor Hugo Chavez, who died in 2013, have between them ruled Venezuela for the last quarter century.

Both have swatted aside waves of international and domestic pressure, retaining power through populist appeal, disputed elections and the might of the military, police and paramilitary gangs.

Faced with a new challenge, Maduro has again turned to the security forces to dull international and domestic pressure. AFP

Thai police hunt suspect over shooting of Cambodian opposition politician

BANGKOK—Thai police on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for a gunman suspected of shooting dead a Cambodian opposition politician in a brazen attack in downtown Bangkok.

Exiled Cambodian opposition figurehead Sam Rainsy accused the country’s powerful former leader Hun Sen of ordering the killing of Lim Kimya on Tuesday.

Lim Kimya was shot dead by a gunman on a motorbike as he arrived in the Thai capital from the Cambodian city of Siem Reap by bus, accompanied by his French wife. Police have issued a warrant for the suspected shooter, who was not named, with local media reporting that the wanted man is a former Thai marine.

Freewheeling Trump sets out US territorial ambitions

PALM BEACH—Donald Trump threatened military action to secure the Panama Canal and economic force against neighboring Canada in meandering remarks Tuesday that drew firm and frosty responses from the two US allies.

Speaking after Congress certified his election victory, the Republican president-elect gathered reporters at his home in southern Florida to announce a $20 billion Emirati investment in US technology.

But his remarks quickly became a rally-style rant as he returned at length to familiar campaign themes.

“Since we won the election, the whole perception of the whole world is different. People from other countries have called me. They said, ‘Thank you, thank you,’” Trump said as he set out his agenda for the coming four years.

The billionaire announced he was going to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and threatened the US’s southern neighbor again with massive tariffs if it does not halt illegal border crossings.

He refused to rule out using military force to seize Greenland and the Panama Canal—both of which he has long coveted—criticizing recently deceased Jimmy Carter for permitting a handover to local control of the Central American waterway when he was president.

Asked if he would use military force to bring Canada to heel, the incoming president said “no -- economic force,” but added that eliminating the “artificially drawn” US-Canada border would be a boon to national security. AFP

Over 134k Seat Belt Law violators apprehended nationwide in 2024

THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Wednesday reported its apprehension of over 134,000 motorists for violation of the Seatbelt Law or Republic Act. 8750 in 2024.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II attributed the aggressive enforcement of the law on the use of seatbelt to the collection of P179.9 million in fines from the violators.

“This is proof that we are serious in implementing this law. If before motorists could get away with it, now they can’t, especially that we are embarking on an aggressive campaign for the use of seatbelt this year,” Mendoza said.

“So we appeal to our motorists to strictly follow the law because as our DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista has been saying, this is for their safety and that this is part of the government’s efforts to ensure the safety of all road users,” he added.

The LTO data showed that CALABARZON has the most number of

apprehended Seatbelt Law violators with 32,485, followed by Region 3 with 10,774, and Region VI with 10,270. Out of the 134,147 apprehensions from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024, a total of 124,712 already settled the penalties. At least 53 are still contesting their violations, while the rest have yet to settle the fines.

The LTO chief promised to sustain the aggressive operations against Seatbelt Law violators as part of the LTO’s Stop Road Crash campaign. However, he gave assurance that the campaign will be complemented by an equally aggressive information drive to encourage more motorists to use seatbelts.

2 Chinese with fake visas nabbed at NAIA

BI chief Joel Anthony Viado said the two passengers were intercepted at the departure area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 before they could board a Philippine Airlines flight to Bangkok, Thailand.

The governor said it was important to show the people that the government is an institution that addresses their needs and problems, not a cause of their concerns.

“Let’s demonstrate to them that the government is the solution to their problems and how to be effective leaders. It is the problem solver rather than the problem itself. Only if we understand how to make sacrifices would this be feasible; else, we won’t be allowed to join the government,” Mamba

regularities in the visas impressed on their passports.

The visas were referred for examination to the BI’s forensic documents laboratory which later confirmed that the documents were bogus.

This prompted the BI supervisors on duty to arrest the passengers and endorse them to the bureau’s legal division for filing of deportation charges. Ferdinand Tendenilla, BI border control and intelligence unit (BCIU) acting chief, said Wang and Su already underwent preliminary investigation by BI prosecutors at the bureau’s main office on Monday.

stressed. The distribution of vehicles to all the barangays of Cagayan was part of Mamba’s advocacy to ensure that no barangay is left behind in development.

The 32 barangays of Tuao, led by Mayor William Mamba, along with the members of the Sangguniang Bayan and barangay officials, were the first to receive the vehicles.

Mayor Mamba conveyed his appreciation for the support provided to his town by the provincial government, saying it was a significant help to each barangay in Tuao in strengthening and expanding the provision of services to the residents.

Tuguegarao Mayor Maila Rosario Ting-Que also thanked the governor for the 49 new utility service vehicles that were to distributed by the provincial government to each barangay in Tuguegarao last Dec. 23.

“Our approach on this matter will be two-pronged, the first being is on strict enforcement through the deployment of our enforcers and coordination with other law enforcement agencies. The second is a massive information drive to make motorists realize the importance of wearing a seatbelt,” Mendoza said. The LTO will coordinate with local government units and tap the services of citizen groups and community organizations for the promotion of public safety awareness. On the other hand, transport groups, schools and other stakeholders would be tapped to maximize the information and communication drive to increase awareness about the importance of seat belt use among drivers and passengers.

SOME ₱6.12 million worth of dried marijuana leaves concealed among unclaimed parcels was surrendered on Tuesday to the authorities by a forwarding company in Barangay Pamplona Tres, Las Piñas City. According to Southern Police District (SPD) director Brig. Gen. Manuel Abrugena, the turnover came following an information from an employee of the logistics company. The information led the SPD Drug Enforcement Unit to coordinate with various law enforcement units, including the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit, District Intelligence Division, the Station Drug Enforcement Unit of Las Piñas City Police Station, Pamplona SubStation 2, the Forensic Unit of Southern Police District (SPD), and MPD Drug Enforcement Unit. Investigators found five large balikbayan boxes containing 51 kilograms of dried marijuana leaves hidden among other packages. Abrugena said investigation into the unclaimed parcels was already underway to determine where the shipment came from and who was the consignee. He emphasized the importance of discovering these parcels before they reach the market, preventing them from being sold at the underground market.

Bomagao returns at ONE Friday Fights 93

ISLAY Erika Bomogao will be the first fighter from the Philippines to compete on the ONE stage this year when she arrives at Lumpinee Stadium in just a couple of days.

Bomogao returns to action against Ran Longshu in a 101-pound catchweight Muay Thai bout at ONE Friday Fights 93 in Bangkok, Thailand, on January 10.

The 24-year-old had a dazzling debut in November of last year. There, she beat Fuu in a clear-cut unanimous decision win. She got to experience first-hand what it’s like to compete on the biggest stage of Muay Thai. Now she wants to get back in the saddle ASAP.

“I love the spotlight. I love the loud people,” Bomogao said in an earlier interview.

“Everyone [in the stadium] was very excited, everyone was happy. I felt happy and everyone was really warm,” she added.

She gets her wish, but it won’t get any easier against Ran, who is also eyeing an impressive start to her ONE Championship career with a victory over the highly touted Filipina.

Bomogao’s return is a precursor to what’s going to be a big weekend for Filipina combat sports. Hours after her fight, Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga will take center stage.

Zamboanga shoots for the ONE Interim Atomweight MMA World Title against Alyona Rassohyna in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 27 on January 11, Saturday morning (PH time), at the same venue.

A win for both Bomogao and Zamboanga will certainly be big for Filipino combat sports, with a busy year slated for team Philippines in the promotion this year.

Tolentino hopes

Guarte’s murder be solved soon

PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino expressed sadness over the death of obstacle sports racing (OCR) champion Mervin Guarte as he sought for a speedy investigation of the crime.

“He’s a big loss to Philippine sports, for obstacle sports racing and athletics in particular,” Tolentino said on Wednesday. “I am hoping that the crime would be solved soon.”

Tolentino said he’ll be reaching out to both Calapan City Mayor Malou Flores-Morillo and Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Hyn Dolor on the fatal stabbing of Guarte, who a was part of the gold medal-winning men’s relay team of OCR in the Cambodia 2023 Southeast Asian Games.

Owner of silver medals in the 1,500 and 800 meters as a track athlete in the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, Guarte was stabbed while he was sleeping in the sala of a friend’s house in Calapan City at dawn Tuesday.

Tolentino expressed grief to the Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation, whose president Atty. Al Agra, was appointed as head of the arbitration committee of the POC also on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Guarte, an Airman First Class of the Philippine Air Force, according to Tolentino, is also a big loss to the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association where he started his career as a national athlete.

The Philippines’ Islay Erika Bomagao raises her hands in triumph after beating Japan’s Fuu in a clear-cut unanimous decision win last November.

Kai Sotto needs 6 months to 1 year to recover from ACL tear

FILIPINO center and Koshigaya Alphas’ standout

Kai Sotto is set to miss at least six months of competitive basketball after sustaining a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.

The injury occurred during the Alphas’ narrow 77-79 loss to the Mikawa Seahorses in the Japan B. League on January 5, 2025.

The Koshigaya Alphas confirmed the diagnosis on Wednesday.

“Kai Sotto was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament on January 5, 2025 (Sunday) at the Seahorse Mikawa game, and has been registered on the Injury List.”

The 7’3” center shared the devastating news with fans on Instagram,

expressing his disappointment.

“The worst way to start the year might be the darkest day of my basketball career when I was told I tore my ACL. Tough to let this one sink in. I appreciate all the love and support everyone has given me these past few days. I know God has a better plan for me, and we just have to keep going,” Sotto wrote.

The Alphas have estimated Sotto’s recovery time at six months, but medical literature suggests a complete re-

covery from an ACL tear can take up to a year. The injury not only sidelines Sotto from the B. League Asia Rising Star Game on January 18, but also casts doubt on his availability for Gilas Pilipinas in the coming 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, and possibly the continental championship in August.

The Philippines, currently unbeaten in Pool A, is scheduled to play road games against Chinese Taipei on February 20 and New Zealand on February 23. Sotto’s absence could leave a significant gap in the team’s roster.

Amid Sotto’s injury, reports have it that Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone is considering recalling veteran forward Japeth Aguilar to fill the void.

Top performers of PH football team to be retained

PLANS are afoot to retain most of the members of the Philippine national men’s football team that made it to the semifinals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 recently.

Philippine Football Federation national training director Freddy Gonzalez said this following the national squad’s memorable stint in the tournament.

“A lot of them will still be there,” said Gonzalez, referring to the players who performed well during the tournament.

One of them is 21-year-old, Makatiborn Sandro Reyes, who had two unforgettable goals, a late, equalizing goal against Laos and an opening kick in their first semis match against Thailand. Gonzalez agrees in what coach Albert Capellas has seen in the team —that it has reached a new level of playing the sport.

Cavite—The revival of the Philippine Open at Manila Southwoods here later this month will have at least one legitimate Japan Golf Tour hotshot coming as he plays on the very course that helped hone his skills while still a budding amateur almost a decade back.

Aguri Iwasaki, the Japan Open champion in 2023 who is ranked 376th in the world, has given his confirmation as one of the direct invites of the host club, one which he represented, and helped win two Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub titles.

“He’s coming home, sort of,” Jerome Delariarte, the champion pro who is now Southwoods’ assistant GM, said after getting confirmation from the two-time Japan Tour winner. “He’s very excited to come over and play here again, and playing the Open at that. He’s going to be one of the players to watch that week, for sure.”

Iwasaki helped form a truly formidable triumvirate for SW back in the day, with the club also having now-PGA Tour star Tom Kim and DP World Tour standout Yuto Katsuragawa, who, incidentally, had to beg off because of prior commitments

And it took years for a new generation of players to get there, ever since the Philippines reached the semifinals in 2010.

With Reyes are a new batch of stars in the squad, which include striker Bjørn Kristensen, Jarvey Gayoso, Kike Linares and goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad. Gonzalez added that they can still include players who were not able to join the ASEAN meet since they were not available for the tournament. And they can be inserted in the roster by March, when the national squad starts seeking qualification for the Asian Cup.

Among those in Gonzalez’s sights are Kevin Mendoza, Jeff Tabinas and Jessie Curran, who were not released by their clubs.

Mendoza plays for Persib Bandung of Indonesia, Tabinas is with Thailand’s Buriram United and Curran is with another Thai team Ratchaburi.

in the former European Tour.

“Aguri has got a well-rounded game, definitely one that can win a tournament as big as the Open,” Delariarte said.

The top stars of the Asian Tour will be flying over for a shot at Asia’s oldest national championship on Jan, 23-26 at the world-class Masters layout with former champions Miguel Tabuena and Angelo Que bannering the local challenge.

Incidentally, three more slots will be disputed Sunday by club members and accredited pros in an 18-hole qualifying, that number of slots increasing by one after Juvic Pagunsan declined an invitation by the club just before Christmas.

The $500,000 (roughly P29M), 72-hole championship, held again at the sprawling Carmona complex, will be the kickoff leg of the 2025 Asian Tour season.

Iwasaki won the Japan Open by two shots over Japanese superstar Ryo Ishikawa. The 27-year-old is also campaigning on the premier US PGA Tour. He has scheduled his practice rounds on Jan. 19 and 20.

Citi sees BSP hiking rates by 75 bps in 2025

CITI Philippines said it expects the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to cut its key interest rates by 75 basis points in 2025 despite the recent uptick of inflation.

“While there are still some upside risks stemming from scheduled increases in electricity charges in January to Mar, we continue to expect 2025 inflation to be well within policy target at 3.1 percent [vs. earlier forecast of 2.8 percent]. The current policy rate remains relatively high, and given the time lag in monetary policy, we expect the BSP to continue with its gradual 25bp rate cuts in February 2025, Q2 and Q3,” Citi Philippines said in a report.

The bank noted that the BSP reduced its meetings to six times this year from seven times in 2024 to allow time for data-gathering.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that headline inflation rose to 2.9 percent year-onyear in December 2024, faster than 2.5 percent in November. This was mainly due to higher household electricity and oil prices, and most of the other categories registered little changes. Overall, food inflation was stable at 3.4 percent, as lower rice inflation helped to offset other increases.

The pick-up in inflation was not broad-based, despite a higher core inflation, which rose from 2.5 percent in November to 2.8 percent in December, reflecting increases in food inflation.

“2024 annual inflation was well within target at 3.2 percent vs. 6.0 percent in 2023. This was partly thanks to the BSP maintaining a tight monetary stance since late 2023. Another important factor was the government’s extension of tariff reduction on several food items [especially rice] through 2028, which likely contributed to lowering inflation expectations,” Citi Philippines said.

DOE defends cancellation of 105 RE service contracts

THE Department of Energy (DOE) on Wednesday defended its move to cancel 105 non-performing and delayed renewable energy service contracts amid concerns it would hurt investor sentiment.

The DOE said it started sending out letters to renewable energy companies on their contract termination but the agency expects them to file motions for reconsideration.

Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said the move would not discourage interested energy investors.

“No, in fact, it would encourage more serious investments in the RE sector. Because there are commitments, and so if they are not able to move then the others who have the technical, the legal and the financial capability should be given

an opportunity to develop the same. They become idle assets insofar as our people are concerned if they are not developed,” Lotilla said.

DOE Undersecretary Rowena Guevara said as soon as the review of a particular project is completed and deemed for termination because of delays in the work program, the termination letter would be submitted to the secretary.

“So we have terminated some. The first 105, we have almost finished sending out the letters. But you know that some of them might go for a request for consideration. So that is

possible. But even though we have already issued the first batch, we are still doing another review to make sure that there are no more projects that are delayed. And if there are, then we will again write termination,” Guevara said.

Guevara said the DOE approved over 1,400 renewable energy service contracts and the agency wants to make sure that those that are not moving can be removed.

“And therefore, others can actually apply for those areas but we cannot open those areas unless you terminate the projects that have been assigned to those areas,” she said.

The DOE said majority of these contracts were awarded in 2017 and 2019, and the common reasons for project delays included failure to secure possessory rights or system impact studies (SIS), indicating inability to connect to the grid.

RFM generated P1.27-billion income and P20.7-billion revenues in 2023.

RFM president and chief executive Jose Ma. Concepcion III expects the company to sustain the strong performance across its brands and business-

He said US stocks also fell Tuesday as strong economic data raised doubts about potential Federal Reserve rate cuts, driving Treasury yields higher and dragging tech stocks lower.

Limlingan said US services index also reported faster growth in December, fueling inflation concerns.

The peso retreated to 58.39 against the US dollar Wednesday from 58.18 Tuesday.

The positive Philippine unemployment data did not help boost investor sentiment. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said unemployment rate decreased to 3.2 percent in November 2024 from 3.6 percent in the same month last year.

Value turnover at the stock market reached P4.355 billion, with 110 advancers, 106 decliners and 44 unchanged issues.

ORDER has been finally restored in the picturesque Camp John Hay in Baguio City.

Armed with a Supreme Court order, the government through the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) took over the management of the tourism enclave in the first week of January this year.

Recalcitrant businessman Robert John Sobrepeña and his Camp John Hay Development Corp. (CJHDevCo) were forced to vacate the place and end their 28-year reign over the public property.

Newspaper accounts reported a peaceful takeover of the 240-hectare leased areas of Camp John Hay. BCDA vice president for public affairs Leilani Macasaet confirmed the government agency gained control of popular facilities, which included The Manor, Forest Lodge, Camp Jojn Hay Golf Club, CAP Convention Center, Commander’s Cottage, open spaces and other areas in the property.

A Supreme Court decision in October 2024 ordered private developer CJHDevCo to turn over the management of the leased property after disputes over payments and plans that led to the voiding of the lease agreement.

The BCDA breathed a sigh of relief over the favorable turn of events.

“This victory is a win for the Filipino people

as it paves the path for exciting investments and projects that will drive socioeconomic opportunities and protects the interests of all,” says BCDA president and chief executive officer Joshua M. Bingcang

“As we open new doors of opportunity, more businesses may reinvest their capital in Camp John Hay and build upon the workforce; all while ensuring that the environmental and cultural integrity of the area are preserved and protected.”

The BCDA, of course, has to calm the worries of lessors who originally signed lease agreements with CJHDevCo. It urged all John Hay stakeholders to sign fresh 25-year-lease contracts with the government.

“They need to come forward and forge a new partnership with BCDA if they want to have a continued presence inside John Hay,” says Bingcang.

He cited the case of Le Monet Hotel, which signed a new lease agreement with the BCDA.

The hotel, owned by the company of former Deputy Speaker and Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric Singson, was one of Camp John Hay’s original locators.

Bingcang claimed that many of the 100 John Hay locators had signified their intention to sign new leases agreements with the BCDA.

SM Prime plans to issue P25-b fixed-rate bonds

PROPERTY developer SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPH) plans to issue P25 billion worth of fixed retail bonds next month based on the company’s regulatory filing.

SMPH said in a registration statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission the tentative offer period for the bonds will be Feb. 12 to 19, 2025, subject to regulatory approval. Issue date was set tentatively on Feb. 25, 2025.

The property firm tapped BDO Capital and ChinaBank Capital as joint issue managers and joint lead underwriters and book runners for the offering. It also engaged BPI Capital Corp., PNB Capital, First Metro Investments Corp., Security Bank Capital and LandBank as joint lead underwriters and book runners for the deal.

SMPH said it would use the proceeds from the debt-raising activity for debt refinancing and capital expenditures for expansion of the group’s portfolio.

SMP reported in December plans to issue and sell up P20 billion, with an over subscription option for another P5 billion worth of bonds.

regardless of whether the locators’ contracts only have a few years left, we give them fresh 25-year leases or more depending on how they contribute to John Hay,” he said. “We... can start negotiating with those willing to sign deals with us,” added the BCDA official.

Many of the 25-year contracts signed by CJHDevCo in 1996 or 1997 have already lapsed in 2021 and 2022.

CJH DevCo in 199l eased Camp John Hay from BCDA and committed to develop it into a tourist spot.

Bigger investments

The Camp John Hay takeover gives the BCDA a fresh outlook to develop the area, attract new investments and take advantage of the area’s natural environment.

“Development balancing care for the environment and progress will uplift communities and enhance property values,” says the BCDA.

The Supreme Court victory is another opportunity for BCDA to flex further its

Series Y Bonds due 2028, 6-year Series Z Bonds due 2031 and 10year Series AA Bonds due 2035.

The bonds will be issued as second tranche from the company’s P100-billion bond shelf registration program approved by the SEC in June.

The planned bond offering was assigned PRS Aaa by Philippine Rating Services Corp. (PhilRatings).

PRS Aaa is the highest rating assigned by PhilRatings, denoting that such obligations are of the highest quality with minimal credit risk and that the issuing company’s capacity to meet its financial commitment on the obligations is extremely strong.

SMPH earlier reported plans to buy back up to P10 billion worth of shares from the open market in a bid to improve shareholder value.

The property firm plans to spend up to P110 billion in 2025 to expand its mall business while also venturing into both the affordable and high-end residential segments.

muscles as a major investment promoter in the Philippines.

It will have its hands full in developing a new metropolis in New Clark City or Clark Green City in Tarlac province. The ambitious project will lead to the creation of the country’s first green and smart city that can rise to the challenges of climate change.

In addition, it is a major player in the proposed economic growth center in Luzon—the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC).

The United States and Japan are the primary funders of the LEC. A trilateral summit of the US, Japan and the Philippines in April last year led to the LEC concept aimed at spurring economic partnerships among the three allies. It is the first project under the Group of Seven’s (G7) Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) in the Indo-Pacific region.

The LEC essentially will link the ports and major economic hubs found in Subic, Manila and Batangas.

The initial components of the newly-launched corridor are the Subic-Clark Railway Project (SCRP), the expansion of Clark International Airport and the development of the Clark National Food Hub.

DA bans poultry imports from New Zealand over HPAI

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said it temporarily banned the importation of domestic and wild birds from New Zealand following reports of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the country.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., issued Memorandum Order No. 01 stating that tests conducted by the New Zealand National Animal Health Laboratory in late November detected the H7N6 strain of HPAI in domestic birds from East Otago, Waitaki and Canterbury.

explores waste-to-energy solution in Clark

STATE-RUN Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is exploring the use of waste-toenergy technology as a renewable energy solution for the Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone and New Clark City amid a growing energy crisis and rising global waste production.

BCDA said it is conducting a study to assess the feasibility of a waste-toenergy facility in Tarlac to enhance the power supply and meet the needs of businesses and investors.

It identified waste-to-energy as a viable alternative to landfills, especially in light of the increasing volume of waste both locally and globally.

“By utilizing waste-to-energy technology, we aim to modernize solid waste management, promote green energy, and accelerate Clark’s transition towards a circular economy,” said BCDA president and chief executive Joshua Bingcang.

A 2018 World Bank report, “What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050”, projects that global annual waste generation will increase to 3.4 billion tons by 2050.

Carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions from solid waste treatment and disposal, largely driven by open dumps and landfills without gas collection systems, reached 1.6 billion tons in 2016 and are expected to rise to 2.6 billion tons by mid-century.

Othel V. Campos

The outbreak was reported by New Zealand authorities to the World Organization for Animal Health.

Tiu Laurel said the ban, which extends to eggs, day-old chicks, poultry semen, and poultry meat, is critical to preventing the entry of the avian influenza virus into the Philippines.

The measure, he said, is intended to protect the health of the local poultry population and safeguard the country’s multi-billion-peso poultry industry, a vital contributor to food security, investment, and job creation.

The memorandum also orders the immediate suspension of processing, evaluation, and issuance of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances for the specified items from New Zealand.

Shipments already in transit, loaded or accepted at ports prior to the official communication of the ban will be allowed entry, provided the products were slaughtered or produced before Nov. 9, 2024.

Quarantine authorities have been instructed to confiscate any poultry commodities covered by the ban to ensure compliance with the directive.

Vehicle firms urged to get fuel economy labels

MANUFACTURERS, importers, distributors, dealers, and rebuilders of all public and private road transport vehicles are required to obtain Fuel Economy Label (FEL) and Fuel Economy Sticker (FES) from the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of its Vehicle Fuel Economy Labelling Program (VFELP) beginning first quarter of 2025.

VFELP is mandated under Section 17 of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (Republic Act No. 11285), which aims to empower Filipino consumers to make informed decisions about vehicle purchases.

“With VFELP, we’re putting the power of informed choice into the hands of Filipino consumers,” DOE energy utilization management bureau director Patrick Aquino said.

“Knowing your vehicle’s fuel efficiency is not just about saving money; it’s about building a sustainable future. Every drop of fuel or kilowatt saved, every gram of greenhouse

DA mourns passing of Savellano

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) mourns the passing of Undersecretary for livestock Deogracias Victor Savellano, a passionate advocate for Filipino farmers.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel expressed profound sorrow over Savellano’s sudden passing, describing it as a loss felt deeply within the department and across the communities he dedicated his life to serve.

“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a dear friend, colleague, and Undersecretary for Livestock, Deogracias Victor ‘DV’ B. Savellano. The shock of his sudden and deep loss echoes not only throughout the Department of Agriculture but across the countless lives DV touched and transformed,” Tiu Laurel said.

Tiu Laurel hailed Savellano as a visionary whose policies were rooted in an enduring love for farmers and rural communities.

“DV was much more than a colleague―he was a friend, a beacon of positivity and an unyielding advocate for the welfare of the Filipino people. His dedication to agriculture was resolute, always guided by a singular purpose: to uplift the lives of those who depended on the land,” Tiu Laurel said.

Savellano’s early career in local governance and leadership in advancing sustainable agricultural practices highlighted his lifelong commitment to rural development. Othel V. Campos

gas emission reduced will make a real difference in the fight against climate change,” Aquino said.

It ensures that fuel economy data, including the engine fuel economy ratings, are readily accessible and verified through the performance labeling requirements set by the DOE with the assistance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) at the point of sale.

Under the VFELP system, all transport vehicle manufacturers, importers, distributors, rebuilders, and/or builders should undergo company registration, covering both head offices and all branches. The registration, costing P3,000, shall be valid for three years.

Vehicle registration is also mandatory for each model/type of vehicle offered by registered companies prior to sale to the public.

The P2,700 registration is valid for six years. The DOE established the VFELP system to facilitate efficient issuance of the FEL and FES.

The clearance should certify that the contractor does not have any outstanding tax liabilities, and that the contractor has duly filed its latest income and business tax returns and paid the corresponding taxes due, prior to the final settlement of a government contract.

“Government contractors have to show that they do not have any outstanding tax liabilities before the final settlement of a government contract.

The BIR will require an updated tax clearance. Otherwise, the government has the power to suspend the final settlement of the government contract” Lumagui said. Before the issuance of RR No. 172024, a BIR tax clearance is submitted by a government contractor during the procurement process as an eligibility requirement.

“Part of our commitment to excellent taxpayer service is ensuring that before government contractors are paid, they are cleared of any tax liabilities. In this way, the BIR will be able to protect the taxes collected from our hardworking taxpayers against Government Contractors who do not even pay their taxes,” said Lumagui.

DOTr to hold public hearing on LRT 1 fare hike

THE Department of Transportation (DOT) said Wednesday it will hold a public hearing Thursday to review Light Rail Manila Corp.’s fare adjustment petition submitted for Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1.

Based on the petition filed before the Rail Regulatory Unit of DOTr, LRMC is seeking P18.15 boarding fare plus P1.65 per kilometer distance fare. This represents a 10.25-percent increase from the current actual fare of P13.29 plus P1.21.

This means that the proposed fare for an end-to-end journey will reach P58 for stored value cards, up from P43 and P60 for single journey tickets, up from P45.

Under the concession agreement, LRMC’s notional fare would be adjusted on Aug. 1, 2016 and every second anniversary thereafter by an effective rate of 5 percent per annum, or 10.25 percent per adjustment. This means that the private operator LRMC is entitled to a 10 percent fare hike every two years.

“While [LRMC] has no obligation to justify contractual fare adjustments under the Concession Agreement, it

THE Philippine economy stands out as a global outperformer, bolstered by robust domestic consumption and a favorable demographic profile, according to a bank economist.

Despite facing global headwinds, the nation continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and growth potential, said Dante Tinga Jr., senior vice president at BDO Unibank’s Investor Relations Group.

Tinga highlighted this optimistic outlook during an exclusive economic briefing for BDO’s Japanese clients.

Addressing an audience of over 80 executives from Japanese companies, Tinga underscored the critical role of the country’s young, growing population and strong consumer spending in driving economic performance,

manager suspends operations of Fontana Resort and Country Club

CLARK Development Corporation (CDC) issued a cease-and-desist order (CDO) on Jan. 6, 2025 against Fontana Development Corp. (FDC) and Fontana Resort and Country Club, Inc. (FRCCI).

The CDO suspended the operations of the two companies within their leased area. It involves the 52-hectare property managed by Korea Country Club Inc. (KCCI). CDC cited multiple violations by FDC and FRCCI, including failure to meet financial obligations, nonfulfillment of commitments under the lease agreement and non-compliance with the Fire Code and National Building Code. These infractions prompted the enforcement of the CDO to ensure adherence to contractual and regulatory standards within the Clark Freeport

Zone, CDC said. Fontana Leisure Parks, situated in the Clark Freeport Zone in Mabalacat, Pampanga is a prominent leisure complex featuring a water park, casino, hotel and various recreational facilities.

The establishment previously faced operational challenges, including a shutdown in December 2016 due to permit issues and a temporary closure in May 2020 following the discovery of an unauthorized COVID-19 facility within its premises. Representatives from FDC and FRCCI have yet to issue a public statement on the CDO.

The CDC said their operations would remain suspended until the companies comply with their contractual obligations and rectify the cited violations. Othel V. Campos

The country’s young, fast-growing population underpins its economic resilience. With half of its citizens aged 25 or younger and an annual population growth rate of 1.6 percent, domestic consumption has remained strong, he said.

Tinga said household spending surpassed pre-pandemic levels, fueled by a resurgence in overseas labor deployment and a steady flow of remittances from abroad. These inflows continue to strengthen the purchasing power of Filipino families, driving consumption-led growth.

Inflation in the Philippines returned to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) target range, opening the door

for potential monetary easing.

Stabilized rice prices, supported by government measures such as reduced import tariffs, contributed to price stability. As a result, the BSP is expected to lower interest rates cautiously, creating a favorable environment for business investments and improved consumer confidence.

Tinga said globally, easing monetary policies—including the U.S. Federal Reserve’s push to lower interest rates—align with local conditions, further supporting economic recovery.

Lower rates are expected to reinvigorate private sector investments, boost business sentiment and potentially accelerate the Philippine economy to its pre-pandemic growth trajectory, he said.

LRMC said it implemented significant operational improvements, rehabilitation projects and system upgrades to the existing system since it took over on Sept. 12,2015.

“While it is not required under the concession agreement as a condition for the grant of a fare increase, these improvements further support the reasonableness and fairness of and further justify the increase,” it said.

CGHMC experts perform

THE Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC) successfully performed a transhepatic stent-assisted portal vein aneurysm coil embolization, becoming the first hospital in the Philippines to achieve the significant advancement in medical treatment.

The procedure was performed on a 69-year-old female patient suffering from obstructive jaundice caused by a portal vein aneurysm.

Imaging studies, including MRCP

and MDCT, revealed a 3.7 x 4.0 x 3.7 cm saccular dilatation of the proximal main portal vein, which was compressing the common bile duct.

Prior to the embolization, the patient underwent an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with bile duct stent insertion, performed by Dr. Michael Louie Lim, a gastroenterologist at CGHMC.

The procedure involved accessing the portal vein through the liver via a small puncture in the abdominal wall.

A metal stent was deployed to pro-

tect the vein, followed by the placement of detachable coils inside the aneurysm to prevent further enlargement or rupture.

The procedure was executed by a multidisciplinary team of experts from CGHMC’s Interventional Radiology, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery, Gastroenterology, Anesthesia, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (TCVS), Endocrinology and Cardiology Services.

MMFF classic controversies

HE Metro Manila Film Festival commemorated its 50th edition with a bang, generating significant buzz in the news and on social media. Whether these issues cast the household-name festival in a good or bad light, they essentially reflect its strong relevance among local filmmakers and audiences.

A Facebook friend jokingly posted that he has no essay-writing contest entry on the movie Green Bones (starring Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid), which won the most awards among the latest set of competing films, including entries featuring icons Vilma Santos (Uninvited) and Vic Sotto (The Kingdom). Another Santos (Judy Ann) beating Vilma, along with Eugene Domingo landing a spot among Philippine cinema legends honored for their contributions to MMFF’s continuing success, prompted netizens to react.

I choose not to join the bandwagon or comment on the controversies surrounding one of the entries or the people behind it. Instead, I delved into the intriguing history of the MMFF, revisiting past controversies that either marred the yearend spectacle or made it more worthy of I casually browsed through the Wikipedia entry on MMFF and found some fascinating tidbits, a few of which I’ll mention here and

During the third edition of the festival in 1977, the late walked out of the awarding ceremonies and expressed his outrage at head after Burlesk won most of the awards, while Brocka’s entry Inay

went home empty-handed. Even a legend can be a sore loser. That said, Lino was undeniably a brilliant director, and his passing derailed the progress of Filipino filmmaking.

The following year, Nora Aunor won Best Performer for Atsay, defying predictions by fortunetellers on a popular talk show who claimed Vilma Santos would win for Rubia Servios. How unfortunate that movie critics’ job of making fearless forecasts was overshadowed by pure guesswork involving perlas na bilog!

In 1986, MMFF opted not to award trophies for Best and Second Best Picture, Best Story, and Best Screenplay.

The jurors noted that none of the seven entries deserved recognition in these categories. Somehow, the real-life EDSA Revolution that year turned out to be far more cinematic.

Just two years later, unknown character actor-director Baldo Marro beating the acclaimed Chito Roño raised eyebrows among film enthusiasts. But who says an unknown shouldn’t win it all?

In the early 2000s, a film cast walked out after revered novelist Lualhati Bautista failed to win Best Story and Best Screenplay for Dekada. Why

Fashion trailblazers who stole the spotlight on Globes Red Carpet

THE 2025 Golden Globes red carpet opened the awards season with a mix of glamour and bold fashion statements.

Zendaya shone in a goddess-inspired outfit, while Miley Cyrus opted for a contemporary, edgy look. The event showcased a range of styles, from sparkling gowns to dramatic silhouettes, setting a high bar for the year’s red carpet appearances.

The first major awards show of 2025 left audiences and critics talking, with standout looks dominating the conversation. And here they are:

Zendaya owns the night (again)

It’s official — Zendaya is in a league of her own. Styled by the legendary Law Roach , Zendaya graced the carpet in a monochromatic orange custom Louis Vuitton ensemble that left no detail unchecked. From the gown to the heels and even her rusty-hued locks, she was a literal goddess. Iconic. Thank you, Z, for delivering yet again.

Miley Cyrus turns cool-girl chic into an art form  Fresh off her first Grammy win last year, Miley Cyrus knows a thing or two about making moves—on the stage and the red carpet. She showed up in a shimmering Celine gown with bold cut-outs, a ‘00s updo (complete with chunky highlights), and topped it off with the ultimate power move: sunglasses. Take notes, people: that’s how you do effortlessly cool. Cynthia Erivo defies gravity with drama  Cynthia Erivo’s structured peplum commanded everyone’s attention. With a deep v-neckline and silver embellishments, the Louis Vuitton ensemble exuded drama and confidence, perfectly complementing her jaw-dropping performance in Wicked Cate Blanchett’s golden comeback

Cate Blanchett joined Viola Davis in proving that red carpet magic can happen twice in the same dress. Blanchett returned to the Golden Globes in a gold Louis Vuitton gown that had already made waves at Cannes less than a year ago. Its cape-style bodice, metallic shoulder detailing, sleek column skirt, and dramatic train were pure elegance. She paired the show-stopping gown with minimal accessories and a sharp side-parted blonde bo b. Viola Davis re-wears Gucci like royalty  Viola Davis understood the assignment and flipped the sustainability script. When Gucci creates a masterpiece, why not wear it more than once? The 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree brought back her stunning black sequined dress from the 2024 LACMA Gala, this time wearing it with a rainbow cape. Bravo to Davis and her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, for making rewearing just as fabulous as a red carpet debut.

Elle Fanning perfects print play

can’t people simply express their disappointment after the ceremonies? Walking out isn’t making a statement; it’s just unprofessional.

A decade later, Tikoy Aguiluz declined his award for Best Director because his movie about Asiong Salonga was edited without his consent. That wasn’t the festival’s fault. Pride often breeds anger, and the editing done was merely sculpting from his woodwork.

Intriguing incidents have occurred throughout MMFF’s rich history. Such controversies have, in fact, helped shape the beloved festival into what it is today—a highly anticipated and revenuegenerating event. There is always something to talk about, highlighting the intensity of the competition.

It’s fine to reflect the realities of Filipino life and the magic of star power through the entries. Personally, I hope MMFF consistently serves as a beacon of hope for the Philippine movie industry, raising the bar for filmmaking and producing generational talents. We don’t just need films that sell; we need films that inspire modern Filipinos to think deeper and act classier.

sequined bust might sound chaotic on paper, but on her? Pure harmony. She paired it with gold Cartier for that extra oomph, reminding us why she’s the queen of combining elegance with edge.

Emma Stone’s new pixie cut

Emma Stone unveiled a brand-new pixie cut that wowed fans on the red carpet. Rumored to be for her upcoming film, was paired with a radiant red Louis Vuitton gown that served straight-up Hollywood sophistication. If her new look is any indication, 2025 is the year of Emma making serious moves.

Angelina Jolie sparkles alongside her daughter Angelina Jolie knows how to make a statement, and the stunning diva made an unforgettable entrance in a bedazzled long-sleeved dress with sheer panels and streaks of black and silver sequins. Jolie wasn’t alone—walking beside her was her daughter, rocking a custom white Alexander McQueen dress adorned with a sequined cherry tree-inspired pattern.

Ariana Grande goes full Audrey Hepburn

Speaking of hair revamps, Ariana Grande ditched her platinum locks for a more honey-brown ‘do. The talented star arrived in a 1966 yellow haute couture Givenchy gown, paired with white gloves and Swarovski crystal accents, she was serving “Good Witch”, but make it fashion.

Timothée Chalamet saves the men’s fashion scene

Timothée Chalamet didn’t just suit up last night. Still paying homage to Dylan , he paired a simple black suit with a delightfully quirky polka-dot skinny scarf, he gave us just enough edge to keep things interesting.

Lionsgate Play streamed the 2025 Golden Globes live for Philippine viewers, offering fans a front-row seat to the star-studded event.

Batangas LGU ramps up HPV vaccination drive to fight cervical cancer

THE Sto. Tomas local government has launched a targeted HPV vaccination program to combat cervical cancer among young girls.

Dubbed “SHEmpre Ligtas: Sapat na Kaalaman ng Kabataan sa Malusog na Hinaharap,” the program focuses on vaccinating 14-year-old girls, complementing the Department of Health’s (DOH) immunization efforts.

The initiative is part of the city’s Cancer Control Program, established in April through Ordinance No. 2024-065, which aims to prevent, detect, and treat cancers, including cervical cancer.

Mayor Arth Jhun Marasigan, Vice Mayor Catherine Jaurige-Perez, and the city council secured 1,763 additional vaccine doses to address gaps in the DOH’s supply and ensure full coverage for girls aged 9 to 14.

“Cervical cancer takes 12 Filipino women’s lives daily despite being preventable. This ensures every Tomasino girl gets life-saving vaccines,” Marasigan said.

Dr. Arnielyn Aguirre, the Cancer Control Program’s adviser, said the focus on 14-year-olds addresses missed vaccinations, ensuring protection before age 15, when more complex and costly regimens are needed.

Vice Mayor Jaurige-Perez highlighted the program’s goal of vaccinating 90 percent of eligible girls within three years, citing political will and community involvement as essential.

The campaign, part of the city’s Student Health Education Program (SHEProgram), aligns with the DOH’s school-based immunization initiative, providing two vaccine doses for Grade 4 students.

The city has partnered with organizations like CervQ and the Global Health Bay Cancer Institute to enhance access to preventive care and treatment.

all the benefits in a single gummy with a delicious natural apple flavor.

Australian Health Vitality Chief Marketing Officer Steve Brandt told Manila Standard Life that the flavors of each Haircarebear variant were chosen based on what complements the taste of their ingredients.

“Some flavors work better with some of the ingredients like Ashwagandha works better with the berry-type flavor because it’s a stronger kind of flavor that works well with the herb that’s in it. Same with the sleep product. But other products like for the hair, its ingredients don’t have a lot of flavor in it so all flavors could work well with it,” said Brandt.

Brandt also shared that the recommended limit for each product is two gummies per day and that each variant is suitable for those aged 13 or older.

“I think the products are really for those who are older. As we get old, we don’t have as much nutrients in our body so we can take some supplements. For young children, they should be okay. They don’t need to take these supplements,” said Brandt. Haircarebear is available at Watsons and SM Beauty nationwide.

As the festive season ends, many are ready for a fresh start, stepping into the new year with renewed energy, focus, and well-being. While the post-holiday period can be challenging, it offers a chance to reset and embrace new beginnings. This period is an opportunity to refocus on health goals and restore balance among work, family, and personal responsibilities. It’s a time to recharge physically and mentally, preparing for the year ahead with clarity and vigor. By fostering a positive mindset and sense of purpose, individuals can embrace the opportunities of the new year. Starting 2025 with strength, clarity, and health is achievable through small, intentional changes. Setting realistic goals that enhance overall health and immunity is a critical first step. This year, adopting “A You Year” approach emphasizes prioritizing self-care, physical health, and mental well-being. By focusing on personal health, individuals can build the resilience and vitality needed to support their loved ones.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining immunity, energy, and overall health. In a busy world, many struggle to prioritize their diet, leading to potential nutrient deficiencies. Healthline notes that such deficiencies can impact overall well-being. LAC Philippines provides supplements designed to address these gaps and support diverse health needs.

Jumpstart your 2025 fitness journey with these practical tips

ACCORDING to experts and nutritionists, health and wellness are evolving. It’s no longer just about hitting the gym or eating right; staying healthy and active now involves a more integrated, personalized approach.

Becoming fit or living a healthy lifestyle often tops our list of yearly resolutions—something we eagerly and passionately commit to at the start of each year. Yet, if we truly succeeded in achieving this goal the previous year, it wouldn’t keep reappearing on our list, right?

The cycle repeats: we sign up for expensive gym memberships, hire personal trainers to guide us on our fitness journey, subscribe to trendy diets, or take up new sports. But despite these efforts, we often fall short, leaving our goals only halfaccomplished.

So what’s holding us back? The truth is, it’s a mix of inconsistent commitment and possibly setting goals that are too difficult to sustain.

Motivational speaker and author Francis Kong says self-care contributes in building a credible image to your audience

MOTIVATIONAL speaker and author Francis Kong believes skincare is more than just vanity—it reflects discipline, professionalism, and respect for others.

Speaking at the launch of USANA’s latest skincare product, Kong emphasized the importance of self-care for men in building a credible and confident image.

“It’s part of discipline. I mean, sometimes, this is a portfolio for men—they have fancy cars, they have fancy watches, and everything, but they don’t have a very nice face because they don’t take care of it,” Kong told Manila Standard Lifestyle

“I mean, you’re in business. It’s like you’re projecting failure if you don’t take care of your face. It is the respect I give to my audience and my clients as well. How can people believe in you if you don’t even take care of yourself?” he added.

Kong then described skin care as an integral part of professionalism, adding that it contributes to the “integrity of the message” a person conveys.

“It’s important for you to be professional, but they can see it in me. I mean, you’re not even taking good care of your hygiene and yourself, so what is it about you that I can believe in? So for me, it is part of the discipline,” the journalist continued.

USANA Philippines General Manager Cherry Ampig echoed Kong’s sentiments, emphasizing that skincare isn’t exclusive to women.

“You really have to take care of your skin. It doesn’t have to be a complicated routine—just cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen can make a big difference. So it’s really very important also for men. Just like what I said, it’s not different. I mean, women and men alike, we have our skin to protect us,” she added.

With increasing exposure to UV rays and pollutants, skincare is more crucial than ever. Addressing these concerns, USANA introduced the Celavive Resurfacing Serum, a science-backed product designed to tackle key skin issues such as texture, tone, clarity, and firmness.

The serum combines advanced ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, mandelic acid, and bakuchiol to deliver visible results after just one use. With continuous application, it would also help reduce

dark spots, fine lines, and breakouts, offering a comprehensive solution for healthier skin.

Launched on Jan. 6, the Celavive Resurfacing Serum has already made waves. During its two-day online pre-sale in December, the product sold out, with demand so high that a waitlist quickly formed.

As one of the brand ambassadors for USANA, Kong shared his personal experience using the serum, stating, “I thought my skin was fine, but after using the Celavive Resurfacing Serum, I realized it could be better. The transformation was incredible.” Ampig, on the other hand, attributed the serum’s success to USANA’s commitment to science.

“We take pride in ensuring that every product we create delivers on its promise. The Celavive Resurfacing Serum is no exception. After just one use, you’ll see visible improvements,” she explained. The Celavive Resurfacing Serum will be made available this month.
