On Sunday, PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil said he ordered the reopening of the cold case after whistleblower Police Lt. Col. Sen. Tulfo confirms solon son caught using busway lane

A VEHICLE carrying Quezon City

Second District Rep. Ralph Wendel Tulfo was caught illegally using the EDSA busway, Senator Raffy Tulfo confirmed on Tuesday.

"I asked Ralph about the incident, and without beating around the bush, he admitted it and sincerely apologized to me. I told him never to let it happen again and that he needs to apologize to the public," he said.

Rep. Tulfo’s vehicle was apprehended on January 23, 2025, for entering the EDSA Carousel lane, which is restricted to buses, emergency vehicles, and select high-ranking officials.

These officials include the President, Vice President, Senate President, House Speaker, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Senator Tulfo, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Services, defended his son by emphasizing that he did not attempt to flee or misuse special privileges such as “Protocol Plate No. 8,” which is reserved for lawmakers.

"He admitted it and apologized, so I don't see any problem with that," the senator told reporters.

He clarified that it appeared to be a decision made by Rep. Tulfo’s driver due to time constraints.

"As far as I know, the ticket has been paid, and the driver attended a seminar. The good thing about it is that he didn't lie; he admitted it right away, apologized, and showed humility," he said.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) enforces strict rules on the EDSA busway to prioritize public transport and reduce traffic congestion in Metro Manila.

Violators face fines of up to ₱1,000 for unauthorized use of the lane, according to MMDA guidelines.

This is not the first time Rep. Tulfo’s vehicle has been flagged for using the busway. The Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) revealed that the same driver was previously caught in September 2024 for a similar violation.

“The force exerted must be more severe than just slapping and punching. This is not the case here. Clearly, the acts attributed to VP Duterte-Carpio and Col. Lachica do not satisfy the stringent criteria for Direct Assault to ensue," it added.

Carayugan-Lugo said the complainants failed to present convincing evidence against Duterte, Lachica and others involved in the incident.

Villamor—a police officer and medical doctor—filed the complaint following a tension-filled situation when Duterte’s chief of staff, lawyer Zuleika Lopez, was being transferred from a detention facility at the House of Representatives to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) last year.

Cavite signs deal on bus transit plan

LAUREL, Batangas—The provincial government of Cavite signed a joint venture agreement for the Cavite Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) System Project with Megawide Corporation and Maplecrest Group Inc. on January 27. The joint adventure agreement is under a public and private partnership (PPP). Cavite Governor Athena Tolentino said the bus transit system (a point-to-point system) will cover the town and city of Kawit, General Trias, Imus, Tanza, and Trece Martires.

The project is expected to reduce around 25% to the traffic in the area with a proposed budget of P1,870,000,000 with 37 bus stations, 3 terminals with 24/7 operation for the span of 42 kilometers across the cities and municipalities of Cavite to provide a link to Metro Manila.

Gov’t urged to hike PhilHealth funds

AMID mounting healthcare costs, former Senator Bam Aquino stressed that the government must allocate sufficient funds to PhilHealth, government hospitals, and the Department of Health (DOH) to provide free health services for Filipinos.

Aquino emphasized that this approach would alleviate the burden on Filipinos, sparing them from worrying about hospitalization bills or waiting in line for financial assistance or guarantee letters from government agencies and politicians.

Aside from healthcare, Aquino said the government must also provide ample funding for other services, such as education and assistance to underprivileged Filipinos. Meanwhile, Aquino called for amendments to the Rice Tariffication Law, insisting it has failed to achieve its intention of reducing rice prices in the market through importation.

Instead of focusing on importation, Aquino said the government must focus on providing sufficient support for local farmers to boost their productivity.

MMDA starts project to unclog NCR roads

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has commended the Special Operations Group - Strike Force (SOG-SF) for their ongoing efforts to combat illegal parking and road obstructions in the National Capital Region.

Recent operations conducted on West Avenue, Del Monte Avenue, Sto. Domingo, Amoranto, Tuazon Boulevard, Maria Clara Street, Luzon Avenue, Regalado Avenue, and Congressional Avenue, all in Quezon City and part of the Mabuhay Lanes led to the apprehension of 103 vehicles, of which 21 were impounded. The Mabuhay Lanes are alternative routes to the 23.8-kilometer EDSA. These cover the cities of Mandaluyong, San Juan, Makati, Manila, and Quezon City. It also includes secondary roads going to shopping destinations in Metro Manila such as Baclaran in Parañaque, Greenhills in San Juan, Divisoria, and Carriedo in Manila. During the operations, makeshift stores, ambulant vendors, sidewalk vendors, and other obstructions that contribute to traffic congestion in the area were also removed.

member of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food, pressed for a swift declaration, emphasizing the urgency of the situation given the high price of rice despite recent tariff reductions.

The National Food Authority (NFA) reported having 761,207 bags of rice in stock, with 300,000 bags considered aging.

NFA Administrator Larry Lacson explained that these stocks would be released for sale if the food security emergency is declared. Aging stocks will be sold at P29 per kilo, while regular stocks will be available at P38 per kilo through Kadiwa stores and local government units.

Representative Arnan Panaligan of Oriental Mindoro urged the Department of Agriculture (DA) to review its legal powers to address the rice crisis more effectively. He emphasized that the DA

possesses ample authority to tackle the issue and encouraged the department to be creative and aggressive in utilizing its resources.

Members of the committee on Tuesday earlier decried the alleged lack of a sense of urgency on the part of concerned agencies, including the DA, DTI, and NFA to bring down rice prices.

This came after the legislators, in the course of the fifth hearing of the mega panel on the high prices of rice and other food items, called out agency officials for their failure to submit a draft of a food security emergency declaration more than a week after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced he favored such a pronouncement.

Yung paper po kasi I think umiikot nga (The papers I think are being circulated).”

Oriental Mindoro Rep. Arnan Panaligan lamented that the concerned officials “have no sense of urgency.” Panaligan urged the DA to be “dynamic and aggressive” in the campaign to bring down food prices, particularly that of rice. NFA Administrator Larry Lacson said the law prohibits his agency to sell rice without a declaration of a food security emergency. Maricel V. Cruz

Fajardo maintained that the said operation is a “regular function” of the police body.

Fajardo also said that even before the election period begins, the PNP’s Oplan Katok has already begun.

“We want to assure the Comelec that this was not started because of the

At the same time, Fajardo clarified that the subjects of Oplan Katok are not just voters but individuals with expired gun registration and licenses, which are intended to remind them to renew their firearms papers.

“Particularly when we have expired licenses, part of our intervention is to go to these expired licenses,” the police official said.

Solon says SC petition aims to destabilize Marcos gov’t

THE petition before the Supreme Court (SC) questioning provisions in the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA) is a deliberate attempt to destabilize the government and reverse the congressional decision to remove P1.3 billion from the Office of the Vice President (OVP) due to supposed lack of transparency in the use of public funds, a lawmaker said.

Deputy Majority Leader Paolo Ortega denounced the petition filed by Rep. Isidro Ungab, lawyer Vic Rodriguez, and their allies, saying it is part of a larger political ploy to sow uncertainty and undermine the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Acting House Committee on Appropriations chairperson Rep. Stella Luz Quimbo of Marikina City, meanwhile, asserted that the ratification of the corrected bicameral conference committee report is unnecessary, citing Omnibus Provision 2 of the report, which was duly ratified by Congress.

“Our position is that the ratification of the corrected bicam report is unnecessary. This is simply because Omnibus Provision 2 of the Report, which was ratified by the members, allows for the possibility of corrections, within limits stated in Omnibus Provision 1 (typographical errors and adjustments as a consequence of amendments),” she said.

Ortega called the SC petition a “calculated political gambit” meant to block the administration’s progress and disrupt governance.

“The petition filed by Rep. Isidro Ungab, Atty. Vic Rodriguez, and their allies before the Supreme Court questioning provisions in the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA) is more than just a legal maneuver – it is a calculated political gambit that exposes their intent to obstruct progress and destabilize the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,” Ortega said.

He accused the petitioners of trying to undo a constitutionally sound decision by Congress to cut P1.3 billion from the OVP’s budget.

“Let us not mince words: this petition is an effort to undo the decision of Congress to cut P1.3 billion from the budget of the Office of the Vice President, a decision rooted in Congress’s constitutional duty to ensure that public funds are judiciously allocated,” he said.

Ortega stressed that the move reflects a pattern of political maneuvering aimed at creating doubt about the legitimacy of the national budget.

“The motives behind this petition are suspect, to say the least. This is not just about budgetary provisions – it is about political leverage,” he said. He warned that the real intent behind the legal challenge is to weaken the Marcos administration and pave the way for Vice President Sara Duterte to consolidate power.

In an ambush interview, AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said that any “clandestine activity” is normally not revealed.

She added that data recovered from the confiscated equipment of the suspects contained maps of the country’s critical infrastructure and could not be easily changed or manipulated.

“So the servers contain maps of critical infrastructures, salient features like military camps. So, what would they be doing with the data on military camps and PNP (Philippine National Police) camps, and critical infrastructures,” Padilla said.

She said the AFP is taking this matter seriously as it involves national security.

Distribution firms can ask consumers to pay deposits—SC

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) can allow power utilities to require their consumers to pay deposits as security for their electric bills, according to the Supreme Court (SC).

The SC en banc made the ruling in a resolution denying a petition filed by the camp of Neri Colmenares challenging the ERC’s authority to allow distribution utilities, such as the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), to collect bill deposits from their consumers.

The decision affirmed the ERC’s rate-fixing power to ensure the economic viability of electricity distributors.

Judicial review requires an actual and completed government action that adversely affects the petitioners, said SC.

It added that since the ERC’s Rules on Bill Deposits are still under development, there is no final act to challenge.

The Colmenares group filed the petition before the SC in 2019, arguing that the bill deposit requirement lacked adequate regulations.

The High Tribunal tossed out the plea for being premature.

AFP confident Basilan incident won’t derail gov’t peace process

THE peace process with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) would not be derailed despite the recent clash in Basilan between government forces and Muslim separatist guerrillas, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said on Tuesday.

In a briefing at the AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, AFP spokesperson Col. Margareth Padilla said the incident in Sumisip, Basilan has not disrupted the government’s normalization program as outlined in a peace agreement with the rebel group. “It is under investigation. But this

whole peace process was not hampered with this incident. What we want to happen here is to resolve this issue that came at hand unexpectedly.” Padilla said.

“The gains were have achieved in this peace process will be sustained. As our chief of staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. has said, let us give peace

a chance,” she added. The Normalization Program, a key component of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, seeks to transform MILF combatants into peaceful, productive civilians while turning their communities into resilient and progressive areas. On Jan. 22, a clash occurred when two armed groups, including alleged MILF members, attacked the Philippine Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion. The encounter left four dead, including two soldiers. Mohagher Iqbal, chairperson of the MILF’s peace panel, surmised that the incident might have been caused by lack of coordination between the two sides. Brawner maintained however, that proper coordination was carried out with the MILF. Padilla also noted that the clash was an isolated incident considering that no similar incidents have taken place over the past years. She said the AFP hopes that such incidents will not happen again with both sides adhering to all the provisions embodied in the normalization process. Earlier, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez, Jr. called on the MILF to conduct its own probe into the Basilan encounter.. Galvez also condemned the attack as a “cowardly act perpetrated by lawless armed men” seeking to derail the peace process in Basilan.” The AFP has also started to gather information to identify the perpetrators in the attack.

CJ encourages law mentors to embrace modernization

SUPREME Court (SC) Chief Justice (CJ) Alexander Gesmundo has called on members of the academic law community to collaborate in modernizing legal education to meet current and future challenges in their profession.

Gesmundo issued the call in his speech at the 2025 Philippine Association of Law Schools, Inc. (PALS) Annual Convention in Clark, Pampanga.

“You integrate real-world issues into the curriculum and foster a deep sense of social responsibility in your student. You shape legal education to produce professionals who will advocate for those in need, challenge injustice, and uphold the fundamental values of a free and fair society,” he said.

Gesmundo emphasized the importance of shaping a curriculum that

combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and values essential for responsible legal practice. Gesmundo, the 27th chief of the Supreme Court, urged law educators to adopt technological tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing their growing role in the legal field. He noted that AI and other technological tools are reshaping the practice of law, from legal research and document review to predictive analytics and case strategy such that there is a need to teach law students how to use these tools effectively and ethically. For her part, SC Associate Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier, chairperson of the 2025 Bar examinations, reminded law deans that practical training plays a vital role in preparing students for the exams.

Solon welcomes dismissal of terrorism rap vs. NGO

A PARTY-list lawmaker welcomed the dismissal of a terrorism financing complaint filed by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group against a non-government organization helping thousands of victims of the 2013 super typhoon Yolanda that hit Leyte island.

Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Arlene Brosas hailed the decision absolving the Leyte Center for Development Inc. (LCDE) as a “victory against malicious red-tagging of humanitarian organizations,”

“The dismissal of this baseless case proves what we have been saying all along - that these terrorism financing charges are nothing but desperate attempts to harass and intimidate humanitarian organizations and development workers who serve our most vulnerable communities,” Brosas stressed.

“The dismissal of the case only shows how the anti-terror law is being weaponized against legitimate organizations,” she added.

The Makabayan bloc of which Brosas is a member filed last year House Resolution 1985 seeking a probe on the alleged systematic judicial harassment against NGOs and human rights defenders, as well as other development organizations.

“These baseless charges and judicial harassment must stop. We have documented through HR (House Resolution) 1985 how these attacks are systematically being used to silence NGOs and development workers who are merely doing humanitarian work in underserved communities,” Brosas emphasized.

Duterte’s drug war: ‘Catastrophic failure’

WAS Rodrigo Duterte’s war on illegal drugs from 2016 to 2022 a “catastrophic failure”?

That’s how Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, lead chairman of the House Quad Committee that conducted a months-long probe of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs, described it, and the way we see it, it’s not off the mark.

It’s not only the scale of the drug war that Duterte unleashed throughout the country that makes it a catastrophic failure.

While it led to an officially acknowledged death toll of some 6,400 alleged drug suspects, human rights groups here and abroad claim that as many as 20,000 to 30,000 people may have been killed on Duterte’s orders, many of them small-time street dealers and drug users, with the really big-time drug traffickers laughing all the way to the bank instead of ending up behind bars.

What makes it a really catastrophic failure, according to Rep. Barbers, is that Duterte’s controversial war on drugs entrenched corruption within the Philippine National Police, promoted impunity, and led to widespread human rights abuses. We agree completely.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla went even further, saying that there existed a “grand conspiracy” within the police force to hide criminal activities.

Barbers, chairman of the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, said the indictment of 30 police officers— including two generals—over a fabricated drug haul in 2022 offers “indisputable proof” of the systemic abuse engendered by Duterte’s scorchedearth and take-no-prisoners approach to the drug war.

Remulla previously described the fabricated drug haul, falsely presented as a major anti-drug success, as part of a broader conspiracy to conceal the PNP’s criminal activities. The DILG, he said, would investigate drug-related operations from 2016 to 2022, focusing on the reward system exposed during the Quad Comm hearings.

Testimonies from witnesses, including retired police colonel and former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office General Manager Royina Garma, revealed that the Duterte administration offered cash rewards for drug suspects killed, arrests made, and drugs seized.

Barbers echoed Remulla’s assertion that the reward system encouraged widespread abuses within the PNP, adding that the Duterte administration’s “reckless policies created the perfect storm for corruption.”

The DOJ is on the right track in pros-

ecuting the 30 erring police officers involved in the planting of evidence in one of the country’s massive seizures amounting to P6.7-billion worth of shabu.

But the catastrophic failure that Duterte’s war on drugs turned out to be because of the number of people killed and the abuses and corruption it later revealed could well turn out to be a positive thing if he gets his comeuppance for crimes against humanity via the International Criminal Court, or even by our domestic courts if the Department of Justice is really serious in getting to the bottom of things and filing the proper charges against him.

The emphasis should not just be on reducing the drug supply but also on reducing the demand for illegal drugs

Duterte has already admitted in his testimonies in the Senate and in the House of Representatives that he really ordered the police to bear down hard on drug suspects.

He has also repeatedly said he would take full responsibility if law enforcers would implement his directive to kill drug offenders.

This admission, made under the glare of television coverage, should tell us that Duterte should be made accountable for upending due process and the rule of law in this country during this six-year term.

Justice is what the families of victims of extra-judicial killings in Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs are demanding. They should be given the chance to have their testimonies heard by competent courts.

As early as 2016, when reports began to surface of what seemed to be indiscriminate killings in the war on drugs, there were already warnings made both here and abroad that the problem of illegal drugs cannot be solved by police raids on suspected drug lairs and the arrest of thousands of drug suspects, mostly users rather than drug kingpins.

In other words, the emphasis should not just be on reducing the drug supply but also on reducing the demand for illegal drugs through mass education on the perils of illegal drug use and intensified efforts in the rehabilitation of drug dependents.

Can digital replace print media?

NEXT month, the English language broadsheet Manila Standard will celebrate its 38th anniversary, flexing its print muscle as its competitors – they are single-minded and driven – continue to daily dive with their editorial, circulation and advertising noses down the digital media.

As the paper celebrates its 38th, the staff have agreed on a comprehensive theme, turned on by a supplement on Feb. 10, “Manila Standard @ 38: Empowering a Sustainable Tomorrow.”

The staff have geared up for a dated supplement which will focus on sustainability, reflecting the paper’s commitment to green initiatives and celebrating the progress made toward a more work-friendly future.

Put together by the staff, both byliners and the unsung heroes of the newsroom, the supplement aims to highlight the importance of sustainability in various sectors and showcase the innovations and practices of individuals or companies contributing to a greener world.

The supplement will both be read in print, the physical aspect of this newspaper, and online, where screens and

computers and social platforms will address the requirements of readers and followers of this newspaper, raring to go at full throttle in its 39th year in a very competitive industry.

We remember what the publisher,

Mr. Rolando Estabillo, a seasoned journalist, told the staff earlier during the monthly and planning session for 2025 attended by editors and senior staff from the other departments including circulation, administration, accounting and advertising.

Print media will likely continue to exist alongside digital media, although in a smaller capacity

He noted animated efforts by staff to get themselves familiar with the digital path and strategies, stressing “We’ve done good actually (but) much more has to be done. This 2025, much is expected of us; if we cannot show (our

EDITORIAL

E-Governance is basic governance

OVERWHELMING and cross-party support marked the passage of the E-Governance bill on third and final reading at the Senate, with 21 affirmative votes, zero negative votes, and zero abstentions. It is a consolidated bill that aims to streamline government processes and make them more transparent by institutionalizing a national framework for a unified digital government system.

Then again, who would object to these aims that put technology to good use, especially in the context of governance? E-Governance is also one of the stated priorities of the Marcos, Jr. administration. According to the bill, the Department of Information and Communi-

principals that) we can, they will put this group waiting in the wings.”

Then we are confronted by the question, perhaps an eerily stalking thought, whether digital media will, with the speed of thunderclap, replace the printed newspapers.

Industry experts have said while digital media is replacing many aspects of print media, it is not likely it will completely annihilate it, since the latter still holds value in specific situations and for certain audiences,

This means the print media will likely continue to exist alongside digital media, although in a smaller capacity.

Mr. Estabillo was precise, if mathematical, when he told the staff the printed version will continue to be there but the newspaper must begin to embrace a wider arena, which includes the digital format, given the earnestness of competitors to win more readers and a bigger slice of the advertising pie beyond their physical print.

Many of Manila Standard’s competitors, apparently aware of the advantages of digital media – instant access, interactivity, and the ability to reach a wider audience – have made a major

cations Technology would lead other government agencies in the pursuit of digital integration. A comprehensive master plan, to be updated every three years, will be drawn up for the purpose.

Mere passage of legislation must be seen not as a final victory but a first step.

The bill integrates concepts like open government, citizen-centered services, a balance between privacy and freedom of information, interoperability, responsiveness and transparency, showing the complex nature of running a government using tools that facilitate convenience and efficiency.

Ultimately, however, e-Governance is so much more than technology. While it hinges on digital infrastructure and equipment upgrades, much of

shift.

Many now access news and information primarily through digital platforms like websites and social media, which have made a crucial impact on print readership.

Industry authorities are of course aware that print has advantages like visibility or materiality, potential for high-quality design and a more focused reading experience, making it more valuable for certain types of content.

But as the seniors at the Manila Standard – from Mr. Estabillo down to managing editor Joyce Pañares, news editor Virgilio DC Galvez, the online staff headed by Aytch dela Cruz, treasury manager Anita Grefal, ad solutions head Baldwin Felipe, circulation manager Edgard Valmorida, the section editors, the photo section headed by Lino Santos, the layout section headed by Vickie Ayeng – and the rank-and-file agree, they are prepared to roll up their sleeves as they march on past their 38th legend with the strategies they have sketched.

Can digital media really reproduce what some in the industry call the tactile and trustworthy experience of

it boils down to fundamentals – specifically, the political will to implement the law evenly across all levels of the government and all geographic areas, and to stay true to the spirit of serving the people better instead of confounding them with strange terms and complicated processes. We laud the passage of the bill and look forward to when it is finally signed into law and eventually implemented. A word of caution, though: while technology offers many benefits, it also carries risks and pitfalls. The dangers are many especially since digital sophistication among Filipinos varies greatly across areas and socioeconomic groups.

E-Governance is by no means novel, and the Philippines is just playing catch-up. Pockets of techdriven processes have been in place for years, but the integration and harmonizations of systems are what our agencies need.

The road toward the bill’s lofty aims will be long and filled with challenges. As always, mere passage of legislation must be seen not as a final victory but a first step.

print, given that the world is now increasingly dominated by screens? On the opposite side, digital media provides matchless accessibility, interactivity and convenience, making it the go-to choice for many in this fastmoving world.

Seniors in the industry will have to address major factors like accessibility, cost, engagement, and examine real world studies of newsrooms that have been successful in navigating the transition.

Evidently, there are pros and cons

The 67-year-old Sir Mark John Thompson, a British-American media executive who is Chief Executive Officer of Cable News Network, believes that while print may become more niche, it will continue to hold value for a particular audience. Other experts like Emily Bell, founding director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, himself argues that we may be reaching a saturation point for digital content. And as people experience digital fatigue, there may be a renewed interest in print as a ‘digital detox’ option.

Colombia sends aircraft for migrants

BOGOTA—Colombia on Monday (Tuesday in Manila) sent two military aircraft to repatriate migrants from the United States after being forced to back down in a blazing row over deportations with President Donald Trump.

President Gustavo Petro on Sunday stepped back from the brink of a full-blown trade war with the United States after Trump threatened Colombia with sanctions and massive tariffs for turning back two US military planeloads of deported migrants.

The foreign ministry said Monday that a Colombian Air Force plane left Bogota in the afternoon with medical staff on board for the US city of San Diego to repatriate 110 Colombians.

Shortly after, it announced another had left for Houston, Texas.

Petro, a former guerrilla, was the first Latin American leader to defy Trump over his plans for mass deportations, vowing he would only accept migrants returned on civilian flights who were not treated “like criminals.”

His announcement came amid an outcry in left-wing ally Brazil over the treatment of dozens of migrants who were flown home in handcuffs last week, prompting Brasilia to sum-

mon Washington’s top envoy Monday to explain their treatment.

But the resistance of Colombia’s president quickly fizzled in the face of Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Colombian imports—despite the two countries having a free-trade agreement—and the suspension of US visa applications.

Trump claimed victory Monday, telling the congressional Republicans’ annual retreat in Miami that “America is respected again.”

At the event, held at a Trumpowned golf club, the president insisted that “as you saw yesterday, we’ve made it clear to every country that they will be taking back our people, that we’re sending out the criminals... the illegal aliens coming from their countries.” AFP

Syrian refugees in Jordan camp say unsure of return

ZAATARI refugee camp, Jordan—They have lived for years in Zaatari, the world’s biggest refugee camp for Syrians, but many are unsure they want to return home from Jordan even after the ouster of former president Bashar al-Assad.

They fear the security situation might once again deteriorate after 13 years of civil war, and some say their homes have been destroyed while others lost their jobs and feel they have nothing to go back to.

In 2012, a year into the war in Syria, neighbouring Jordan opened Zaatari camp to host people fleeing the conflict.

It is now home to 75,000 people, according to UN figures.

To begin with, it was a squalid collection of tents dotting an arid landscape, but over time, it grew into a town of prefabricated homes, supplied with free electricity, water, health and schools.

On a street named the Champs-Elysees, after the famed Parisian avenue, 60-year-old shop owner Yousef Hariri told AFP he wanted to stay in Zaatari with his family, where they feel safe. AFP

Andrea Tanjangco, Jianna Lyn Dela Torre, and Arlita Domingo swept the podium in the 040 ladies’ category, while Carlo Dela Torre and Mark Griffin earned gold and silver, respectively, in the 040 men’s division.

Ann Joy Aler and Susana Shayne Sacramento achieved a 1-2 finish in the 030 ladies’ wakeboard event.

Franchesca Coo added a silver in the U18 ladies’ category, with Marvin Tucio and James Damanche securing bronze in the 030 men’s and U14 men’s divisions, respectively. Eliasch promises climate for change if elected IOC president

JOHAN Eliasch says he was as surprised as anyone that he threw his hat into the ring to succeed Thomas Bach as IOC president but he told d AFP he is the right person to meet the disparate challenges that lie ahead, especially the pivotal issue of the environment.

Eliasch is a highly successful businessman and renowned environmentalist—making him a pertinent candidate in light of the recent wildfires in 2028 Games host city Los Angeles —and has been president of the International Ski Federation since 2021. He hopes such a CV will dazzle his electorate, the International Olympic Committee members, when they choose one of the seven

candidates to be Bach’s successor in March this year, even if he has only been a member since July.

Eliasch may lack the profile of athletics icon Sebastian Coe and the inside knowledge of the IOC that Juan Antonio Samaranch Junior possesses after two decades as a member, but he believes he has the skillset required to run the most powerful body in sport.

“I have been an adviser to governments on protecting the environment and taking action on climate change,” he told AFP in an interview this month.

“I have been very involved in technology, I have run a major company. I run the biggest winter sports federation, which provides 55 percent of all events in the Winter Games.

“The bottom line is if they are looking for somebody with a lot of experience and expertise I am your man.”

Loman deserves next crack at Andrade

In The Red Corner Nissi Icasiano

LAST Friday, January 24, at the soldout Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, Filipino MMA fans had no direct representation inside the Circle at ONE 170. But that didn’t stop the top dog in the bantamweight division from invoking a certain Filipino warrior’s name in the heat of battle. Fabricio Andrade needed just 42 seconds — yes, you read that right — to obliterate Kwon Won Il and retain his ONE Bantamweight MMA World Championship in emphatic fashion. And what did he do right after? He sent a message to every bantam-

weight on the roster, and in the process, he uttered a name that we haven’t heard for quite some time — Stephen Loman. And just like that, the wheels of destiny began to turn. Loman didn’t waste time responding, issuing a video statement through the Lions Nation MMA Facebook page. The message was crystal clear:

“You proved once again why you’re the champion, but you and I both know there’s one challenge you haven’t faced yet. And that’s me.” And oh, did that statement hit differently. The MMA world stood divided — some clamored for the showdown immediately, while others raised an eyebrow and muttered, “Hold your horses.” Now, on the surface, Loman’s claim to a title shot may not seem airtight. After all, he’s been side -

lined for nearly two years, and his last fight? A hard-fought unanimous decision loss to the ever-dangerous John Lineker at ONE Fight Night 14 in September 2023. But let’s not be shortsighted. Let’s peel back the layer s and look at the bigger picture. Loman is still the No. 2-ranked bantamweight under the promotion’s banner. He was the rightful top contender in 2023 until ONE Championship decided to throw Andrade into a vacant kickboxing title fight against Jonathan Haggerty. That unexpected detour led him to take a short-notice fight against Lineker, a move that — while courageous — didn’t go his way. But let’s get one thing straight: losing a close fight to Lineker is not a death sentence. If anything, it’s a reminder of just how dangerous Loman is. He had moments in that bout, showed durability, and proved that he belongs at the top. Before that setback, Loman was rid-

time in Britain than his country of birth, said the new president arrives at a crucial moment.

“We are at a crossroads where expectations are very high and if you get things wrong it will not be a soft landing, it will be a crash landing,” he said.

“So it is important to have the right person steering us into the future and there are going to be some very big decisions coming up in sport.”

Eliasch, who says as he will be 63 come the election, it will be “his last hurrah”.

‘Slippery slope’

On key issues such as the environment and sustainability he has a proven track record—for example, he founded Cool Earth, a charity dedicated to rainforest conservation in 2006.

“I was always passionate about nature,” he said.

“There is an existential threat, though, centring round food, water and climate security. AFP

ing a mind-blowing 11-fight winning streak. He announced his arrival in ONE by knocking out Yusup Saadulaev in his debut, followed that up by outclassing Shooto champion Shoko Sato, and then secured a dominant victory over former bantamweight king Bibiano Fernandes.

Now, with Kwon falling short against Andrade and Lineker already having two cracks at his Brazilian compatriot, the bantamweight picture is cloudy at best. No one else has made a compelling case for a title shot.

Despite his time away from the cage, Loman remains one of the few contenders who hasn’t yet faced Andrade. With few fresh matchups available for the champ, Loman-Andrade is the fight that makes the most sense. Loman’s well-rounded skill set presents a serious challenge for Andrade. While Andrade’s recent opponents have largely relied on striking, Loman’s wrestling game — mixed with his striking — makes him a unique threat. His grappling could be the test Andrade has yet to face in

was forced to retire injured from the Australian Open. Following Sinner’s withdrawal, the field in Rotterdam will be headed up world number three Carlos Alcaraz. Fellow top 10 players Daniil Medvedev, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev are set to join Alcaraz in the main draw. AFP

Heat suspend star forward Butler without pay indefinitely

MIAMI—The Miami Heat indefinitely suspended Jimmy Butler on Monday after the disgruntled forward walked out of a practice session, reportedly when he was told he would be coming off the bench for the NBA team.

“The Miami Heat are suspending Jimmy Butler without pay effective immediately for an indefinite period to last no fewer than five games,” the Heat said in a statement posted on X.

“The suspension is due to a continued pattern of disregard of team rules, engaging in conduct detrimental to the team and intentionally withholding services.

“This includes walking out of practice earlier today.”

It’s the third time this month the Heat have suspended the 35-year-old Butler, who had been expected back on Monday from a two-game ban for missing a team flight. He had previously been suspended for seven games for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team”. Butler, in his 15th NBA campaign, sparked the Heat into the 2020 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers, and the 2023 finals, where they lost to Denver.

But even before his first suspension, Butler had indicated he wanted a trade. Initially resistant, the Heat have said the would “listen to offers” from other teams for the six-time All-Star. AFP

the Circle. “Wonder Boy” has been dominant against strikers, but what happens when he’s up against a wellrounded Filipino who can wear him down and test his cardio?

In this sport, it’s not just about the title — it’s about the storylines, the drama, the redemption arcs. Loman’s return after a tough loss, followed by a shot at the title, would be the kind of narrative that fans can’t resist.

The former BRAVE CF champion from Ifugao has long been viewed as a future ONE titleholder. Now is his chance to prove that his defeat to Lineker was just a temporary setback — and not the end of his road to glory. If ONE wants to truly test Andrade — if they want to see how their golden boy handles a different kind of beast — then there is only one answer. Give Stephen Loman his world title shot. He’s earned it. For comments or questions, reach the author at nissi.icasiano@gmail. com or visit his Facebook page at www.facebook.com/nissi.icasiano.

The Philippines will host the men’s world championship for the first time from September 12 to 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and SM Mall of Asia Arena.

PSA Athlete of Year Yulo: My win is everyone’s win

“ANG panalo ko ay panalo nating

lahat,” stressed Paris Olympic Games double gold medalist Carlos Yulo in accepting the prestigious Athlete of the Year honor during the glittering San Miguel CorporationPhilippine Sportswriters Association (SMC-PSA) Awards Night at the Centennial Hall of the historic Manila Hotel on Monday.

With some of his fellow Paris Olympians and a bevy of former athletes who represented the country in the quadrennial global sportsfest from several generations in attendance, Yulo paid tribute to those who made his remarkable golden double in the romantic French capital possible.

Banking on his precocious talent and skill, he was the undisputed star of the PH Olympic contingent in romping off with the floor exercise and vault golds, punctuating the country’s centennial participation in the Olympics held in the City of Lights.

Yulo was presented with the highest honor from the country’s oldest media organization on stage by Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino, Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richard Bachmann, Senator Bong Go, Rep. Mikee Romero, and PSA president Nelson Beltran, sports editor of The Philippine Star.

Among those the pint-sized sports hero cited in the star-studded gathering co-presented by ArenaPlus with Cignal and MediaQuest, was Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP)

president Cynthia Carrion, recipient of the National Sports Association (NSA) of the Year award.

“Sa pagtitiwala at unang naniniwala sa kakayahan ko,” said Yulo of the gymnastics federation head.

He also mentioned his girlfriend, referring to her as “ang napakamaganda kong partner, Chloe (San Jose). Maraming maraming salamat sa pag-aalaga sa aking mental health,” and coach Aldrin Castaneda “sa paghubog sa araw-araw, sa disiplina at pag-suporta sa mga gusto ko at pagiging atleta. Love you po.”

“Nagpapasalamat din ako sa Panginoon sa lahat ng blessings and challenges na binigay niya sa buhay ko. Sa lahat ng paghihirap ko, lahat ng pagod, sobrang worth it talaga na nakamit ko ang tagumpay kasama ang

mga mahal ko sa buhay,” noted the 24-year-old athlete, who began his career at the tender age of eight.

Yulo acknowledged his fellow Paris Olympians for serving as his motivation.

“Alam ko ang ating pinagdaanan at saludo ako sa achievements natin,” he said as Summer Games boxing bronze medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas were present in the festive occasion fully supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, PLDT/Smart, and Senator Bong Go, with backing from the PBA, PVL, 1-Pacman Party List, Rain or Shine, Akari, and AcroCity.

Petecio and Villegas were the top choices for the President’s Award.

No bad blood between Yulo brothers Carlos, Eldrew

SINCE the second week of January, double-gold Olympic medalist Carlos Yulo has been training with his younger brother Karl Eldrew, who is being considered to be part of the national men’s artistic gymnastics team next year.

The 16-year-old Eldrew felt excited, privileged and honored to join his kuya “Caloy” in sessions done with older teammates at the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines training center in Intramuros, Manila.

“Natutuwa ako at nagagalak ako sa kanya. Wini-wish ko sana ay maabot niya kung ano gusto niya maabot sa buhay, at siyempre, sa pagiging atleta,” said the elder Carlos, 24, after he received the PSA Athlete of the Year award on Monday evening at the Manila Hotel.

The younger Yulo was also feted during the gathering, with the Tony Siddayao award, months after winning a gold medal in the vault event of the Asian Junior championships, to go with two in the Pacific Rim meet.

Carlos had always been in touch with his younger brother since he returned from training in Japan

last June, staying tuned with his family’s activities through Eldrew and their sister Isa in the coming months, while he was in the Paris Olympics and when he got back to Manila as well.

All this time it was only their parents and older members of their immediate family who were out of touch with Carlos and his activities ever since he won his two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, after a misunderstanding took place between them

The Yulos received their awards without their parents present, but with Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion and secretary general Rowena Bautista around with coach Castaneda, and Carlos’ girlfriend Chloe San Jose

Eldrew is relishing his first sessions with Carlos since the latter returned from Japan last June to prepare for his coming stint in the Paris Olympics, where the elder Yulo eventually won two gold medals.

“Maraming lessons pa ako na male-learn this time. I’m excited to win the next competitions. I’m expected to learn from them. Hindi naman ako natatakot magkamali. Ang goal naman ay maka-pasok sa Olympics,” added Eldrew.

Go, Villanueva forge ahead as winds test TCC Invitational field

STA. ROSA, Laguna—Lloyd Go birdied three of the last five holes in blustery conditions, rallying to catch Dino Villanueva at the top with a three-under 69 in the opening round of The Country Club Invitational 2025 at the TCC course here on Tuesday. Clyde Mondilla, despite a solid effort, lamented missed opportunities on the long holes, settling for a 70 and solo third, while Aidric Chan and Gwon Minwook carded 71s to share fourth place, keeping the leaderboard tight in the P6 million championship, the flagship tournament of each Philippine Golf Tour season. Coming off a breakthrough victory at PGT Palos Verdes last year, Go opened his 2025 campaign in impressive fashion. Despite being in the final

morning flight when the winds started to pick up, he struck his irons well and submitted his best-ever score at the notoriously demanding TCC layout.

“I hit it really good, the numbers were ideal for my full swings,” said Go, who remained focused on his game plan rather than the leaderboard.

“I knew the lead was three under, but I didn’t mind it because anything can happen on this course.” Earlier, Villanueva dominated the front nine with a scorching five-under 31, which provided enough cushion against a late slip that saw him drop strokes on Nos. 13 and 14.

Taking advantage of an early start, he caught fire with four consecutive birdies from No. 2, immediately seizing the

spotlight in the 20th staging of the annual event held in honor of ICTSI founder Don Pocholo Razon.

A highlight of his stellar front nine came at No. 4, where he left himself a 135-yard approach and struck a precision pitching wedge to within a foot for birdie.

“It was a good start, but I didn’t really mind the score. I just focused on my game – the strategy is to play one shot at a time,” said Villanueva, who remains in search of a breakthrough professional victory.

Even after back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14, he remained upbeat:

“That’s okay,” he said with a smile.

“I’ll play with the same approach in the next round.”

Yulo likewise showed his appreciation to his legions of fans, appealing to them to rally behind him once more when he again aims for glory for flag and country in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

On behalf of the other Olympians present from batches 1964 to 2024 who were handed out with Special Awards, basketball great and former Senator Freddie Webb said Yulo’s unforgettable experience at the Summer Games was shared by them all.

“Ako’y kinasal ng 1963, naging Olympian ako ng 1972. Alam ninyo ang naramdaman ko? Parang kinasal ulit ako. Sapagka’t masarap maging Olympian, maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat,” said the 82-year-old cage icon in his heartfelt message as keynote speaker for the night.

Tots Carlos Cool Smashers extend win run

UNBEATEN Creamline continued its dominant run in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference, cruising to a commanding 25-12, 2521, 25-19 victory over winless Nxled at the Philsports Arena on Tuesday.

The win brought the Cool Smashers halfway to a potential sweep of the preliminary round, improving their record to 6-0 while tying the Petro Gazz Angels (6-1) at the top of the standings with 17 points.

Although the defending champions completed the match in one hour and 27 minutes, they faced some tense moments in the third set. Trailing 1518, Creamline banked on two crucial challenges to swing the momentum in their favor.

A successful net fault challenge cut the deficit to 17-18, and another ball-in/ out challenge after Tots Carlos’ long hit tied it at 18. The challenge reversed the call, giving Creamline a 19-18 edge and igniting the defending champions’ decisive 9-0 run.

Bea de Leon then delivered a decisive quick attack, and Alyssa Valdez capped the run with a clinical kill to give Creamline a commanding 24-18 lead. Nxled’s May Luna momentarily delayed the inevitable with a throughthe-block hit, but Carlos ended the match with a powerful kill, securing the Cool Smashers’ fourth shutout win in six matches. “Siguro medyo nag-relax,” said Creamline setter Kyle

Nestlé investing over P18b to help improve nutrition in PH

“In the Philippines, Nestlé is a ‘kasambuhay’--a trusted companion—of Filipino families, providing nutritious and high-quality products and implementing many different initiatives to support sustainable living in the country,” said Nestle global

chief executive Laurent Freixe said in his visit to the Philippines. “Our investments enable us to continue to help build happier, healthier lives for Filipinos,” said Freixe. Remy Ejel, chief executive of Nestlé for Zone Asia, Oceania and

Africa, said the company has served Filipinos for 114 years and remains committed to contributing to the country’s growth and development.

“The Philippines is one of Nestlé’s biggest markets worldwide, and we strongly believe in its potential,” Ejel said.

The company’s investments in the country focus on new production technologies, operational continuity, environmental sustainability, coffee farmers and product innovation and renovation, including micronutrient fortification.

“Our strategy and priorities for our investments combine our goals of achieving business growth and of cre-

ating shared value for all stakeholders. We strive to help address urgent social, economic, and environmental challenges where we can make a meaningful impact. Our long-term success depends on it,” said Nestle Philippines Inc. chairman and chief executive Kais Marzouki.

The company said leading its investment priority is putting in place new technologies appropriate for the market, keeping people safe while increasing manufacturing efficiencies and increasing the output of high-quality products that support nutrition, health and wellness needs as demand rises.

Group asks gov’t to reopen mothballed nuclear plant

NUCLEAR advocacy group Alpas Pinas on Tuesday urged the government to re-open the mothballed 620-megawatt Bataan nuclear power plant instead of putting up a new nuclear facility.

“Help us advocate for the opening of the Philippine nuclear power plant because it is our fastest way to become a nuclear country. It is already built. It will take a lot of time to build a plant. We already have it,” Alpas Pinas lead convenor Gayle Certeza said.

The government decided to mothball BNPP in 1986 over alleged safety concerns.

Pangasinan 2nd District Rep. Mark Cojuangco said if the Philippines had pursued nuclear energy almost four decades ago, electricity prices would have been cheaper today.

He said nuclear is a cheap, clean and reliable source of energy that would drive economic growth and sustainability.

Cojuangco said it is unlikely the Philippines would be able to put up a new nuclear facility by 2032 as targeted by the Department of Energy.

“Following what the DOE is doing, we have no chance to have a nuclear plant by 2032 because they don’t even

know what kind of plant they want to buy, right?” he said

Cojuangco said without a reliable supplier of nuclear modules, the Philippines should explore the possibility of putting up a module factory in the abandoned shipyard of Hanjin in Subic Bay, Zambales.

“So that the Philippines becomes part of the supply chain. So that’s what I want to push to the U.S. government. In the meantime, that is not yet existing, the source for our supply chain is Korea and Japan,” he said. Alena Mae S. Flores

SPPC is the owner/operator of the 1,278-megawatt Ilijan combined cycle gas power plant, while EERI is the owner/operator of the 1,320-MW combined cycle gas power plant under construction. The Ilijan Primeline Industrial Estate Corp. is the owner of the plant sites of SPPC and EERI in Batangas.

SPPC, EERI and IEPC were previously wholly-owned subsidiaries of San Miguel Corp. As a result of the transactions, SMC’s power arm SMGP retains a 33-percent equity interest in SPPC, EERI and IEPC.

Farm, fisheries output dropped 2.17% in 2024

PHILIPPINE farm and fisheries production dropped 2.17 percent year-on-year in 2024, pulled down by a 4.42-percent decline in the fourth quarter.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on Tuesday reported declines across most farm sub-sectors last year.

It said that from January to December 2024, the total volume of crop production was estimated at 80.41 million metric tons (MT), a 6.3-decline from the previous year’s figure of 85.83 million MT.

A 13.5-percent decline in sugarcane output and a drop of 4.8 percent in palay production dragged the crop performance in 2024. La Niña and El Niño episodes also adversely affected harvests.

Livestock production decreased by 4 percent to 2.17 million MT from 2.26 million MT in 2023. This was attributed to lower production across almost all livestock commodities, with hog production leading the decline at 5.1 percent yearon-year. Dairy production showed a slight uptick.

Poultry production saw a positive performance in 2024, reaching 2.94 million MT, a 6.6-percent increase from the previous year’s output of 2.76 million MT.

THE Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) said it is ramping up its efforts to drive job creation and address the lingering effects of the pandemic on the country’s workforce.

Building on the success of its 2022 initiative that generated 1 million jobs, ECOP said it is now aiming for greater employment, targeting more than a million new opportunities, with a focus on underserved sectors such as the informal workforce.

ECOP president Sergio Ortiz-Luis is optimistic about future opportunities, emphasizing the organization’s renewed commitment to job creation.

“If you remember in 2000, we set a target of 1 million jobs. While we didn’t meet that goal by the end of the year, we managed to hit it by March of 2022,” Ortiz-Luis said in a pre-event briefing Tuesday for the upcoming 50th anniversary of ECOP.

“The program was initially paused with the change in administration, but with the support of the President’s advisors, we’ve revived it and are now pushing forward with even more ambitious targets,” he said.

A major focus of the new initiative is the informal sector, which includes farm workers, fisherfolk and other groups typically outside the formal labor market.

Ortiz-Luis said many workers in these areas have irregular incomes and lack access to formal employment benefits.

“ECOP’s expanded efforts will aim to integrate these individuals

Ortiz-Luis highlighted the partnership with various industry groups as a key to achieving the new goal. Unlike previous years, where specific job targets were set, the initiative will be ongoing, ensuring long-term growth in the employment sector.

PH stocks fall as investors stay cautious

PHILIPPINE stocks declined Tuesday ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration after the US markets closed mixed on sell-off of tech stocks. The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange Index lost 43.41 points, or 0.70 percent, to close at 6,153.47. The wider all-shares index also went down by 16.33 points, or 0.4 percent, to setle at 3,632.52. Financial markets will be closed Wednesday for the Chinese New Year. Philstocks Financial Inc. research head Japhet Tantiangco said investors maintained a cautious stance, while waiting for catalysts.

“Investors are still looking forward to the Philippines’ 2024 GDP data as well as the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting,” Tantiangco said. Trading remained tepid, with net value turnover at P4.11 billion. Foreigners were net buyers for the day, after 15 straight days of net selling. Net inflows amounted to P199.32 million.

The banks led the sectors, advancing 1.55 percent. The services sector declined 3.66 percent.

Losers edged gainers, 112 to 66. Monde Nissin Corp. emerged as the top index gainer, climbing 2.64 percent to P6.99. Wilcon Depot Inc. was at the bottom, plunging 8.10 percent to P8.40. Meanwhile, Japanese tech firms sank Tuesday following a rout on Wall Street after China’s DeepSeek chatbot upended the artificial intelligence sector and sparked questions about huge investments by US titans. The Department of Agriculture (DA) presented the Philippines’ vision for a sustainable and inclusive agricultural future at the 17th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., whose speech was delivered by Undersecretary Christopher Morales, highlighted the Philippines’ commitment to integrating bioeconomy principles into its national strategies.

He pointed to two key frameworks—the Philippine Action Plan for Sustainable Consumption and

Production and the National Innovation Agenda—as foundational to the country’s efforts to foster resource efficiency and innovation within agriculture.

“The Philippines is committed to advancing sustainability across all sectors, including agriculture,” Morales said, emphasizing the country’s dual focus on increasing agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

He said the DA aims to create a circular and resource-efficient economy, where sustainability is at the core of agricultural practices.

As climate change and resource scarcity pose mounting challenges to global agriculture, Morales stressed the need for collective action.

“No single nation can tackle these issues alone. Collaboration is critical, especially in designing bioeconomy strategies that are inclusive, innovative and equitable,” he said.

The DA’s National Innovation Agenda is geared towards promoting the use of green technologies and sustainable farming practices.

Morales said such innovations would not only improve operational efficiency, but also directly benefit farmers and fisherfolk, enhancing their livelihoods and bolstering food security in the country.

Cebu Pacific expects to increase passenger volume to 30m in 2025

CEBU Pacific said Tuesday it expects to carry 30 million passengers in 2025, fueled by the introduction of new domestic and international routes and increased flight capacity.

“We carried 24.5 million passengers last year, and we are expecting a growth rate in the mid-20s this year, not barring any supply chain issues,”

Cebu Pacific president and chief commercial officer Xander Lao said.

“So, we expect to grow our passenger numbers by roughly in the mid-20 percent … another 6 million passengers. Maybe 30 million passengers this year,” he said.

The airline unit of the Gokongwei Group carried 24.5 million passengers in 2024, or 17.6 percent higher than 20.9 million it served in 2023.

Cebu Pacific said it would launch direct flights from Clark to El Nido

and Coron (Busuanga), giving travelers from the Greater Manila Area and North and Central Luzon more opportunities to explore some of the world’s best beaches and island destinations.

Starting March 30, 2025, Cebu Pacific will operate daily flights between Clark and El Nido and Coron in Palawan, which are known for their stunning white sand beaches, diverse marine life and exciting water activities.

VIVANT Corp. said Tuesday its wholly-owned-subsidiary Vivant Renewable Energy Corp. complied with the post-closing requirements for the sale of its equity stake in Buskowitz Energy Inc. (BEI) to Aurora Sustainable Energy Pte. Ltd. Vivant announced in September last year that VREC would divest its equity stake in BEI subject to certain conditions to focus on its retail energy supply and the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) business.

“The parties will be executing the final transaction documents upon completion of the conditions in the assignment agreement,” the company said in a disclosure.

It said that with post-completion of the transaction documents, VREC would no longer hold shares in BEI. VREC will divest 560,000 common B shares in BEI equivalent to 32.26-percent shares. VREC acquired its stake in BEI in 2021.

VREC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vivant Energy Corp. (Vivant Energy), the holding company for the energy-related investments of publicly listed conglomerate Vivant.

“The divestment is part of VEC’s efforts to focus its investments on its core competencies, particularly in its retail energy supply [RES] and Small Power Utilities Group businesses,” said VREC president and chief executive Mark Habana earlier.

The transfer will be implemented through the acquisition by Aurora Sustainable Energy, a private limited company incorporated in Singapore, of outstanding common B shares, through the assignment by BEI of its right to purchase VREC’s shares under the shareholders’ agreement.

The BOI’s contributions to the guidebook include information on landmark investment policies such as the Strategic Investment Priority Plan (SIPP), a guide to available incentives for registered enterprises, investmentready locations and a directory of key government contacts.

“While inflation has moderated, prices of some key commodities remain elevated,” Balisacan said.

“It is very crucial to make sure that food is affordable and accessible by enabling markets to function efficiently, as well as refining our targeting programs for low-income and vulnerable Filipinos,” he said.

The labor market showed significant gains, with the unemployment rate averaging 4.3 percent in 2024, surpassing the government’s target range of 4.4 percent to 4.7 percent. Poverty among Filipinos dropped to 15.5 percent in 2023 from 18.1 percent in 2021, which translates into approximately 2.4 million Filipinos lifted above the poverty line.

ISCHEMIC heart disease was the leading cause of death in the Philippines in the first half of 2023, with over 65,000 cases, according to a recent report from the Philippine Statistics Authority. This accounted for nearly 19 percent of all deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) says many heart diseases are preventable by addressing common risk factors such as poor diet, smoking, obesity and lack of exercise. However, even with a healthy lifestyle, health risks can still emerge unexpectedly. Many health risks can be prevented or managed, especially with early detection. Maintaining good health involves more than just exercise. It includes regular health screenings, considering family medical history, and ensuring adequate coverage in case of serious illness.

Access to quality medical care is crucial. AXA offers comprehensive critical illness coverage through Health Max Elite. “Through Health Max Elite, Filipinos can take charge of their health with confidence,” said Nandy Villar, chief marketing officer of AXA Philippines. “Knowing you’re protected allows you to focus on living life to the fullest. With AXA by your side, Know You Can face life’s uncertainties with ease,” said Villar.

Beyond covering over 150

TPB honors tourism partners at Pasasalamat ‘25

THE Tourism Promotions Board (TPB)

Philippines opened 2025 with its annual Pasasalamat event on January 27 at the historic Centro de Turismo in Intramuros, celebrating the invaluable contributions of media professionals and content creators in elevating the country’s tourism industry. The event, held in the newly revitalized Centro de Turismo, served as a tribute to the storytellers who have helped spotlight the Philippines on the global stage. TPB Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles underscored the significance of collaboration in the industry’s success. “Pasasalamat is our way of recognizing the contributions of our partners in sharing the wonders of the Philippines,” she said. “Through your dedication, we’ve reached new heights and inspired travelers to explore our country.”

TPB highlighted its milestone achievements in 2024, including PHP 11.3 billion in sales leads—an impressive 44.8% increase from the previous year. Global travel fairs such as ITB Berlin and the World Travel

Market in London contributed PHP 918 million in leads, while strategic media partnerships with major networks like GMA 7, ABS-CBN, CNN, Bloomberg, and Euronews generated PHP 1.44 billion in media values. Adding to the celebration, Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Frasco emphasized the unprecedented growth of the tourism sector in 2024. International visitor receipts reached a record-breaking PHP 760 billion, with tourists spending an average of 2,073 USD per capita and staying longer—from nine nights in 2019 to 11 nights in 2024. “Tourism is an expression of who we are as Filipinos. Together, let us show the world that the Philippines is not just a destination but a feeling, a love that lasts beyond the journey,” she said. The TPB also played a vital role in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, hosting MICEFORM 2024 in Clark, which generated PHP 2.8 billion in sales leads. To sustain this momentum, the agency launched the MICE to the World initiative, positioning the Philippines as a leading global destination for business events.

Adding star power to the evening, international personalities such as 13 Reasons Why actor Timothy Granaderos, Crazy Rich Asians star Nico Santos, Broadway’s Aladdin Josh de la Cruz, and Korean actor Kim Ji Soo were recognized for their roles in promoting Philippine tourism. Music icons like LANY were also honored for their influence in establishing the country as a vibrant cultural destination. Beyond marketing, TPB’s CommunityBased Tourism Marketing Enhancement Program empowered grassroots communities, particularly in Bicol and CALABARZON, through workshops aimed at sustainable tourism development. The DOT also launched initiatives such as marine conservation programs for dive tourism and the construction of 32 tourist rest areas, further strengthening accessibility and sustainability efforts.

The Pasasalamat event was not only a moment of reflection but also a call to continue fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable tourism. As TPB and its partners move forward, the agency remains committed to positioning the Philippines as a premier global destination, one story at a time.

AS THE streets of Binondo light up in hues of red and gold, the rhythmic beat of drums echoes through Manila’s historic Chinatown— signaling the arrival of Chinese New Year 2025.

The scent of freshly cooked dumplings fills the air, dragon dancers weave through crowds, and families gather over feasts of tikoy and whole fish, all in hopes of ushering in prosperity for the Year of the Wood Snake.

More than just a festival, Chinese New Year (CNY) is a cultural bridge, uniting generations of Filipino-Chinese and native Filipinos in shared traditions. While Binondo takes center stage, echoes of these festivities ripple across the Philippines—from Davao’s bustling Chinatown to Cebu’s old Chinese settlements, proving that the influence of Chinese heritage runs deep in the Filipino way of life. Binondo, home to the world’s oldest Chinatown, is the heartbeat of Chinese New Year celebrations in the country. Established in 1594 as a settlement for Chinese traders, the district has since evolved into a vibrant commercial hub where Filipino and Chinese cultures blend seamlessly. From family-owned businesses practicing ancient feng shui principles to modern entrepreneurs launching digital ang pao transfers, Binondo is where the past meets the present.

This year, Manila’s local government, in collaboration with various Filipino-Chinese organizations, has lined up festivities leading up to the grand CNY countdown at Jones Bridge on January 28. The Prosperity Tree Lighting at Plaza San Lorenzo, the Grand Chinatown Parade, and a weeklong food bazaar promise to make Binondo the ultimate cultural hotspot this season. While Metro Manila—particularly Binondo, Makati, and Quezon City—sees grand-scale celebrations, other parts of the country also welcome the Lunar New Year with their own twists.

Cebu and Davao, home to large FilipinoChinese communities, host their own dragon dance performances, temple visits, and grand feasts.

In Iloilo, the city’s Chinese heritage is celebrated alongside the Dinagyang Festival, proving that cultural traditions beautifully intertwine in the Philippines. Even in smaller provinces, Chineseowned businesses participate in offering discounts or hosting festive giveaways, ensuring the Lunar New Year spirit is felt nationwide. Beyond the firecrackers, red lanterns, and Tikoy towers, Chinese influence is deeply woven into Filipino culture—from the lucky charms in our wallets (hello, Feng Shui

NICKIE WANG,

brings 1950s Hollywood ‘diva’ to Sundance indie fest

ACTRESS and pop star Jennifer Lopez brought a heady blend of 1950s Hollywood musical and gritty prison drama to Sundance with her new film Kiss of the Spider Woman , which earned a standing ovation from the indie movie festival on Sunday.

The musical film, about two mismatched cellmates who form an unlikely intimate bond during Argentina’s 1970s military dictatorship, was the hottest ticket at this year’s Sundance gathering, which typically focuses on smaller arthouse and documentary fare.

“It’s about how love can cure any divide. These two people who couldn’t be more different in this cell together – doesn’t matter their sexuality, their political beliefs. None of it,” Lopez told AFP , on the red carpet. “It’s exactly the kind of story that we need to see right now.”

Based on the Broadway adaptation of Argentine author Manuel Puig’s novel, Kiss of the Spider Woman is directed by Bill Condon Condon is best-known for blockbusters like Dreamgirls , Chicago , and the final Twilight films, but earned his big break at Sundance with 1998’s Oscar-winning Gods and Monsters

He told AFP that Lopez’s involvement undoubtedly helped the film procure financing, but that he also “knew she was the only person who could play this part.”

“Because it’s a diva. We don’t have that many divas in our lives. I don’t know whether it’s gone out of fashion,” he said.

Diego Luna plays Valentin, a tough and idealistic political prisoner who is experiencing horrific torture by the regime, but refuses to give up his revolutionary secrets.

He finds himself forced to bunk up with Molina (Tonatiuh), an LGBTQ convict who has secretly been sent to coax information from him.

Molina starts regaling Valentin with the plot of his favorite Hollywood musical – shown in extensive flashbacks, starring Lopez as the glamorous diva Ingrid Luna, which begin to interweave with the prison narrative.

Like most films at Sundance, the movie is up for sale, with producers hoping to spark a bidding war between Hollywood studios and streamers.

Sundance runs until next Sunday.

Arnell Ignacio returns to concert stage

ARNELL Ignacio is making his stage comeback in a concert that began as a playful suggestion from his close friend, former actress Liz Alindogan. Despite his demanding role as an administrator at the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Ignacio agreed to join the show titled Timeless... Music & Laughter after some gentle persuasion.

In an interview with Manila Standard Entertainment, Alindogan, who also produces the concert, shared her confidence in Ignacio’s ability to balance his commitments.

“He didn’t really have much of a choice when I brought up the concert,” she admitted.

“Everything was already planned, and I knew he wouldn’t say no. He’s great at multitasking, and I trust him completely.”

For Ignacio, this concert brings him back to his roots.

“Showbiz and music are very close to my

heart,” he said. “Whenever opportunities like this arise, I take them as a way to thank those who support me and to spread joy.”

Before his career as a television host, Ignacio was known for his live performances. He even released an album in 1998.

During the concert planning, Ignacio began considering what he missed about performing.

“I miss the instant appreciation from the audience and the adrenaline rush of being on stage. There’s this unique energy that drives you to give your best,” he said.

He also spoke about the camaraderie behind the scenes, describing it as one of the most rewarding aspects of showbiz.

“The bond with people backstage makes the work enjoyable. When the director gives the cue, it’s a thrill to transform into a performer— it’s a feeling like no other,” he said.

The event, scheduled for Feb. 15 at the Century Park Hotel Grand Ballroom in Manila, is billed as a post-Valentine celebration. The New Minstrels 5th Generation will lead the performances, joined by crooner Chad Borja, singer Alynna, and Attorney Rene Puno of the original New Minstrels. IF YOU are adept in American Gen Z culture, you might have heard the term “aura” making the rounds. Gen Z aura means having a significant charm or a powerful attraction.

Aura power

Of course, Filipinos have used the term for at least a decade. Most notably, Filipino bakla culture has cultivated “Aura” to assemble oneself and then project a sense of presence that demands to be seen. Aura is a refusal to be invisible, to be omitted, to be meek. Decades before the bakla aura, you have the bongga, but that is a blank statement for extravagance, flamboyance, and being fabulous. Bongga does not emanate solely on personal appearance. Aura is not just a static image but a series of actions such as preening, sashaying, and throwing knowing glances. Aura is a performance not just for adulation but an affirmation of self-actuality: you become what you build, so to speak. That is Aura power. Arguably, the bakla culture owes a lot of this fabulous comportment to the film women contrabidas (villains), particularly the glamorous

The enduring charm of the lion dance

IF THERE’S one thing I look forward to during the Chinese New Year, it’s the Lion Dance, a traditional Chinese performance typically performed to ward off evil spirits and usher in good fortune.

In the lion dance, two performers wear a colorful lion costume. One dancer assumes the role of the “head and front limbs” of the lion, while the other becomes the “body and hind legs.” The lion’s head costume often resembles that of a dragon. The performance is usually accompanied by drums, cymbals, and gongs.

The style of the lion dance can vary depending on its regional origins. The lion dance from southern China, particularly in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, imitates the lion’s movements, such as scratching, shaking its body, and licking its fur.

Meanwhile, the northern Chinese lion dance highlights martial arts, especially kung fu. This style involves rolling, wrestling, leaping, jumping, and climbing, with one dancer lifting the lion’s head to make it stand.

In Chinese mythology, the lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. One folk tale tells of a monster named Nien, which appeared in ancient China during the reign of the legendary Yellow Emperor. Nien was said to be swift and fierce, terrorizing both people and animals. The warriors could do nothing to stop it, and even dogs and tigers failed to catch it. Desperate, the people sought the help of a mythical lion.

The benevolent lion confronted Nien, wounding it. However, Nien vowed to return the following year for revenge. Without the lion’s protection, the people created their own “lion” made of bamboo and textiles. Two men crawled inside and mimicked the mythical lion’s movements, successfully driving away Nien. From then on, people performed the lion dance every year to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Historically, lions didn’t exist in China before the Han Dynasty (202 BCE to 220 CE). It wasn’t until the Silk Road trade opened that people in ancient China (now known as Xinjiang) saw a few lions. After encountering the oncemythical animal, the people began mimicking its appearance and movements, thus creating the lion dance.

The lion dance evolved during the Three Kingdoms Period and gained popularity with the rise of Buddhism during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. By the Tang Dynasty, it had become one of the court dances.

The lion dance is often paired with the dragon dance, which involves numerous dancers parading with a long, colorful dragon in a procession through the streets or other venues.

As we celebrate the Chinese New Year, enjoy the lion dance, and may it bring you luck in 2025.

women who are the opposite of the cute, dainty, mousy, and charming leading ladies who are supposed to be virtuous and decent. The contrabida always makes a grand entrance, demanding to be seen.

The true power of the bakla aura is the knowledge that you are being gazed upon and that you know you are gaining much attention and ham it up. Among the stellar contrabida in the pantheon is the late great Bella Flores, in whose 1951 print ad you can see the emergence of the Aura power.

In this ad, the selling proposition is that a film star is confident that her close-ups would be stellar because of this soap. She is comfortable with her close-ups, and that is precisely the goal of the bakla aura, wherein you demand to be seen and that the gaze must be held for a more extended period. This approach to being seen is classified as camp, a

mode of exaggeration. Culturally speaking, many gay men have this affinity for the contrabidas because of the latter’s transgressive, and campy status of being hated or of being feared. The contravidas have a certain flair and a more pronounced sense of style. Aura is this energy emanating from the self, not in the form of chakras but in the form of defiance from being marginalized. Aura is an implement of extending oneself on one’s terms to become even more visible.

Bella Flores’ eyebrows and how she tilts her head as she throws that withering glance are almost counterintuitive for a soap ad. The fresh ingenues are usually bright and sprightly if you look at the ads for beauty products for generations.

From the 1951 ad, you can assume that Bella Flores does not giggle and does not suffer any fools. Look at Bella Flores’ brooch. It can be classified as a weapon. That’s Aura power right there.

Filipino fashion in bold reinterpretations of the terno

TERNOCON

2025 was a true celebration of Philippine culture. It trained the spotlight on Filipino artistry and craftsmanship proving that the future of Filipino fashion is in capable hands.

The fourth edition of TernoCon, held at the Philippine International Convention Center’s Reception Hall, concluded with Peach Garde of Capiz taking home the prestigious Pacita Longos Award, the gold medal.

Garde’s winning design was a bold, architectural creation inspired by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, renowned for his Bauhaus-inspired style. Her vision of Filipino fashion impressed judges and attendees alike, securing her the top prize in the competition.

This year’s TernoCon tasked 12 finalists with creating three distinct looks inspired by the works of both living and deceased Filipino artists. Garde’s pieces, which showcased precision tailoring and innovative silhouettes, were lauded for their refined elegance while maintaining a strong connection to the Philippine artistic heritage.

The event also saw Bryan Peralta receive the Pacita

Escurdia Award (silver medal) for his designs influenced by National Artist Jose Joya, while Ram Silva’s collection, inspired by the pastoral works of Fernando Amorsolo, earned him the Ramon Valera Award (bronze medal). Windell Madis was honored with the Joe Salazar Award (chef mentor’s medal), having drawn inspiration from the work of National Artist H.R. Ocampo Ben Chan, founder and chairman of Suyen Corp., the company behind Bench, expressed pride in the competition, which saw 82 contestants whittled down to the final 12. Mentored by design veterans Rhett Eala, Lulu Tan-Gan, and Ezra Santos, the finalists presented a diverse and captivating array of creations that celebrated Filipino artistry.

During his opening speech, Chan explained the challenge posed to the finalists: “They were tasked with the most challenging edition of the terno thus far. They were asked to create garments to celebrate our culture, using the works of 20th-century Philippine contemporary artists as their inspiration.”

Chan also expressed his anticipation for the finalists’ contributions to the future of the national dress, stating, “We look forward to your contribution to the evolution of our national dress in the future.”

Throughout the evening, mentors also showcased their own collections, with Eala channeling the works of Lao Lianben Tan-Gan interpreting Ang Kiukok’s art, and Santos reimagining Abdulmari Imao’s legacy. Last year’s gold medalist, Ysa Inumerable, returned to present a vibrant collection inspired by Anita Magsaysay-Ho’s works.

The event, a collaboration between Suyen Corp. and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), attracted a distinguished crowd, including First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, renowned designer Inno Sotto, actors Alden Richards, Dingdong Dantes, Ruru Madrid, Bianca Umali, Dawn Zulueta, and beauty queens Chelsea Manalo, Michelle Dee, and CJ Opiaza. CCP President Kaye Tinga was also in attendance to show support for Filipino fashion.
