MSMES TO BEAR BRUNT OF P200 WAGE HIKE

MICRO, small and medium enterprises –which account for over 99 percent of all business enterprises – must be taken into consideration before making a decision on the proposed P200 legislated daily wage increase, the Department of Labor and Employment said on Saturday.

“Whether it’s doable or not doable, perhaps, to put it in its proper context, out of the more than one million enterprises in the Philippines, more than 95 percent are MSMEs. So let’s see,” Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said.

Laguesma clarified the Labor department is not opposing the proposed measure.

“Congress is the one that has the mandate or responsibility to pass or propose laws. If there is a law, we will implement it,” Laguesma said.

He said together with the National Economic and Development Authority and the Department of Trade and Industry, DOLE provided technical inputs on the proposed wage hike’s possible impact on employment and economy.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that 1,246,373 business enterprises were operating in the country as of 2023.

MSMEs comprised 99.63 percent or 1,241,733 of the total, while only 0.37 percent or 4,640 were large enterprises.

Micro enterprises constituted 90.43 percent or 1,127,058 of total establishments, followed by small enterprises at 8.82 percent or 109,912, and medium enterprises at 0.38 percent or 4,763.

MSMEs accounted for a total 6,351,466 jobs or 66.97 percent of the country’s total employment, with micro enterprises producing the biggest share (33.95 percent), closely followed by small enterprises (26.26 percent) and medium enterprises (6.77 percent).

Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the proposed wage hike needs further study, citing concern over its possible impact on the MSMEs.

The House Committee on Labor and Employment on Thursday approved a substitute bill mandating a P200 daily acrossthe-board wage increase for private sector workers.

Under the bill, employers are prohibited from offsetting the increase with previous wage adjustments unless explicitly anticipated under collective bargaining agreements.

GOV’T, MILF PANELS APPROVE IMT REVIVAL, SECURITY TRANSITION

THE peace implementing panels of the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front have agreed to revive the International Monitoring Team as part of efforts to protect the peace gains in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

During their 36th meeting on January 31, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro and sustain the peace gains in the region.

PHILADELPHIA — A medical jet with six Mexican nationals on board crashed into a busy Philadelphia neighborhood Friday (Saturday, Manila time), authorities said, marking another US aviation disaster after a passenger plane and a military helicopter collided midair in Washington earlier this week.

Video footage appeared to show the twin-engine plane descending at a sharp angle towards a residential area, sparking a huge fireball upon impact and showering wreckage over homes and vehicles.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft was a Learjet 55 — an AmericanFrench business jet — that had taken off shortly before from Northeast Philadelphia Airport bound for Branson, Missouri. A young girl who had been in the United States for medical care,

panying her onboard were killed in the crash, the children’s hospital that treated her told AFP.

“The patient had received care from Shriners Children’s Philadelphia and was being transported back to her home country in Mexico on a contracted air ambulance when the crash happened,” said Mel Bower, a spokesman for Shriners Children’s.

All six of those onboard were Mexican citizens, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The airline company... confirmed to the consulate that six people of Mexican nationality were traveling on the aircraft,” the ministry wrote on X.

The operator, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, confirmed in a statement to US media that there were two passengers and four crew, adding, “At this time, we cannot confirm any survivors.”

Among the key agreements reached were a framework for security transition plans, a phased redeployment process for the military in the Bangsamoro and steps to support the amnesty application process for MILF members. Both panels also endorsed a roadmap for transitional justice following the Transitional Justice and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations.

Discussions included managing small arms and weapons decommissioning.

They also explored safe passage for MILF members seeking amnesty, awaiting action from the National Amnesty Commission.

In light of recent ceasefirerelated incidents, the GPH-MILF Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities and the Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG) were tasked with conducting joint investigations and intensifying information campaigns to strengthen support for the peace process.

The panels also extended their condolences to the families of two soldiers who were killed during an armed encounter in Sumisip, Basilan on Jan. 22.

US President Donald Trump posted Friday on his Truth Social platform that he was “sad” to see “more souls lost” in the Philadelphia tragedy. He praised first responders, adding: “God Bless you all.”

Witnesses told local TV crews that they saw body parts in or near the wreckage, as Philadelphia City Council member Mike Driscoll said he feared residents or others on the ground may have been killed.

“It doesn’t look good. And it’s a sad situation here,” he told CNN.

The FAA said it was launching an investigation with the National Transportation Safety Board.

“These incidents underscore the critical need for strong coordination, mutual respect, and unwavering commitment to the parallel and commensurate implementation of the peace process,” BARMM Education Minister and chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal said.

SPEAKER: DEFEND CONSTITUTION, FIGHT FOR THE WEAK

Speaker Martin G. Romualdez urged his fellow lawyers to be defenders and protectors of the Constitution, justice, rule of law, and the weak who cannot afford the cost of legal service.

“What kind of legal profession will we pass on to the next generation? One that is driven merely by profit, or one that remains a beacon of hope for the nation? One that is transactional, or one that is

transformative?” he said the Integrated Bar of the Philippines’ 20th National Convention of Lawyers in Lahug, Cebu City Friday night.

“We must ensure that every Filipino, whether rich or poor, educated or unlettered, knows that the law is not the instrument of the powerful, but the protector of the weak. That justice is not a privilege, but a right. And that lawyers are not mere advocates of clients, but guardians of the nation’s moral and legal compass,” said

Romualdez, a UP law graduate. He said the legal profession today “demands more than expertise, it demands courage.”

“Courage to uphold the Constitution when it is most inconvenient. Courage to speak the truth when silence is the safer path. And courage to stand for justice, not just for the privileged, but for those who cannot afford representation, whose voices are drowned out by wealth and influence,” he said.

PCG TELLS CHINESE VESSEL:

KEEP SAFE DISTANCE FROM FISHERMEN

THE Philippine  Coast  Guard  (PCG) on Friday demanded the  Chinese  Coast  Guard  (CCG) to maintain a safe distance from Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

“The PCG has firmly communicated to CCG3304 the necessity of maintaining a safe distance from Filipino fishing boats, stressing that its presence poses a significant threat to the safety of both the fishermen and their vessels,” PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela said.

According to the PCG official, CCG vessel number 3304 continues to rove the waters off

Zambales as of Friday morning.

“The Philippine  Coast  Guard  vessel, BRP Magbanua, has been actively safeguarding the safety and security of Filipino fishermen in the waters off Zambales while simultaneously addressing the illegal presence of the Chinese  Coast  Guard  vessel CCG-3304,” Tarriela said.

The PCG distributed food packs to local fishermen in the area while demanding that China vacate the WPS as the latter lacks legal authority to operate in the area.

“BRP Magbanua emphasized the Philippines’ sovereign rights over these waters, approximately 103 nautical miles from Zambales, reinforcing that Filipino nationals have the legal right to fish in this area as outlined in Republic Act 12064, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the 2016 Arbitral Award,” Tarriela said.

The presence of the United States’ Typhon missile system in the Philippines alarms China due to the possible entry of more defense systems from the Western power, an analyst said on Saturday.

UP Asian Center senior lecturer Richard Heydarian said the single battery of a Typhon MidRange Capability (MRC) launcher “is not gonna change everything,” but China’s angst is based on what could happen in the future.

“The real fear of China is that’s just the opening. That if we feel we’re threatened, it’s not only gonna be one typhon. It’s gonna allow America to preposition their best weapon systems,” said Heydarian in a Saturday news forum.

“The plan is not only in the northern Philippines but the plan is to bring up an arch of missile defense systems from Southern Japan to Guam, to northern Philippines and Taiwan. Once you do that ... If that happens, good luck to China invading Taiwan. Talagang bugbog sarado. Even before the war happens, bugbog sarado sila (China),” he added.

China is alarmed about the deployment of the US Typhon missile system in the Philippines, fearing it could lead to a greater US military presence, according to analyst Richard Heydarian.

DOH: NEW LEGISLATION NOT NEEDED ON PREGNANCY PREVENTION BILL

AMID the debate surrounding Senate Bill 1979 (Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Bill), the Department of Health (DOH) asserted that new legislation isn’t necessary.

The department said the 2012 Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law (RH Law) is sufficient if properly implemented.

DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Albert Domingo suggested improving health education within the existing MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health) curriculum. He advocated for dedicated, trained health teachers instead of one teacher handling all MAPEH subjects, citing the awkwardness of, for example, a PE teacher also teaching reproductive health. Given the teacher shortage, he also proposed employing nurses in schools.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, meanwhile, introduced a substitute bill for SB 1979 with amendments

addressing concerns about Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE).

As chair of the Senate Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality Committee, she expressed optimism that the revised bill would alleviate President Marcos’s previously stated concerns. The DOH has pledged to support Congress in developing more effective CSE programs for schools.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier vowed to  veto  Senate Bill 1979 or the Comprehensive Sexuality Education Bill if it is passed in its current form, criticizing provisions he described as “woke absurdities” that undermine parental authority and traditional values.

“This is all this woke that they are trying to bring into our system,” he told reporters, expressing shock over sections of the bill he reviewed over the weekend.

“You will teach four-year-olds

how to masturbate? That every child has the right to try different sexualities? This is ridiculous, abhorrent, and a travesty of what sex education should be,” he said.

The President also voiced concern about the diminished role of parents under the proposed legislation.

“What about the parents? Do they no longer have the right to decide what and when their child is taught,” he said in Filipino.

As it stands, Mr. Marcos said he supports teaching children about anatomy, reproductive health, the consequences of early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

“But the ‘woke’ absurdities that they included are abhorrent to me,” he said.

“I guarantee all parents, teachers, and children: if this bill is passed in that form, I will immediately  veto  it,” the President said.

However, Senator Risa Hontiveros, chairperson of the panel on women, children, family relations, and gender equality, refuted claims that the bill includes controversial provisions even as she expressed her openness to refining the measure to ensure its passage.

“Comprehensive Sexuality Education or CSE contains the very same things you support: teaching kids anatomy and the consequences of early pregnancy. That is what we are also advocating for,” she said.

“I am willing to accept amendments to refine the bill so we can steer it to passage,” the senator added.

Hontiveros assured the public that terms like “masturbation” or “try different sexualities” are not found in the bill, noting that CSE focuses on teaching anatomy, reproductive health, and the consequences of early pregnancy. With AFP

LGBTQ GROUP SLAMS TRUMP ADMIN ON DECISION TO FREEZE US FOREIGN AID

AN ADVOCACY group criticized the Trump administration’s decision to freeze US foreign aid to partner countries, stating that it has negatively affected services for women, children, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The group also called on the Philippine government to reduce its dependence on US funding for healthcare.

In a statement released on Saturday, LGBTQ+ rights group Bahaghari condemned the freeze’s impact, particularly on social services related to sexual health. US foreign aid, channeled either directly to governments or through local advocacy groups and NGOs, helps fill gaps in services that may otherwise be unavailable.

“Programs aimed at youth, as well as health services like

the distribution of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)—a critical medication for preventing HIV transmission—are among those impacted,” said Bahaghari Chairwoman Reyna Valmores Salinas, quoted by ABS-CBN News. She added that affected organizations around the world are facing mass layoffs due to the abrupt loss of support.

One such organization is LoveYourself, a sexual health clinic in the Philippines working to combat the country’s rapidly growing HIV epidemic. The clinic reported that the cost of providing PrEP and selftesting kits has increased due to the changes in U.S. Policy. Salinas urged the Marcos Jr. administration to take action by increasing domestic healthcare funding and support to address these shortages.

law enforcers for violating the gun ban, saying police will continue to set up checkpoints as part of its election gun ban during the 2025 election period. Despite the Comelec’s efforts to disseminate information about various prohibitions during the election period, poll chairman George Garcia has noticed a sharp rise in gun ban violators over the past week.

In a Viber message, Garcia said that there were 521 civilians, 18 security guards, four Armed Forces of the Philippines members, four foreigners, and others nabbed for violating the gun ban in effect since January 12.

The poll chief reiterated the reminder to the public to observe the election law, which includes the gun ban. The election gun ban will be in effect until June 11, 2025. Vito Barcelo

INTENSIFY OPERATIONS VS. LOOSE GUNS

THE National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has intensified its operations against illegal firearms in preparation for safe and secure midterm elections.

As part of its ongoing commitment, the NCRPO has conducted various anti-criminality operations, including police checkpoints and the implementation of search warrants across Metro Manila.

From January 12 to January 31, the NCRPO seized 149 illegal firearms and arrested 149 individuals for violations of Republic Act 10591 and the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections.

“This initiative aligns with our strategic policing approach, which emphasizes being Able, Active, and Allied (AAA). This ensures police readiness to prevent crime and strengthen law enforcement efforts throughout the region,” said NCRPO Director Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin. Joel E. Zurbano

DENGVAXIA DOCTORS REMAIN HOPEFUL ON PENDING CASES

THE doctors who were dragged into the Dengvaxia cases remain hopeful that their pending cases will be dismissed after the dismissal of 98 cases due to the absence of direct casual relationship between the vaccine and the children’s death. Former health undersecretary Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go, an internist clinical pharmacologist toxicologist, Fellow of the Royal College of Physician Edinburgh, Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors,  expressed gratitude for the “enlightenment” on the case, adding that those “fake experts” should have their licenses canceled. Hartigan-Go was a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Committees for Safety of Medicinal Products for a decade and six years in  Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS), the counterpart committee of WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE).

“We just have to stick with the facts of the cases that there was no causal evidence linking the vaccine to the deaths,” Dr. Raymund Lo, an American trained pathologist certified by the American and Philippine Boards of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Immunopathology, said in the joint statement. Department of Justice (DOJ) Usec. Raul Vasquez explained that the agency dismissed the 98 Dengvaxia cases as there was no direct causal relationship between the said vaccine and the death of the children, adding that there are “plenty of factors that supported that re-evaluation and re-examination” of the justice department. 100 DISPLACED POGO WORKERS GET JOBS

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Saturday said only 100 displaced workers of Internet Gaming Licensees (IGLs) were hired on the spot at the recent job fair in Pasay City.

DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma, speaking at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, expressed concern over the low hiring rate of workers of former Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), considering that 8,000 tried their luck.

Some 18,000 affected workers expressed interest in joining the two-day job fair, based on pre-registration data.

“But only about 8,000 came,” he said. The job fair, dubbed Career Con 2025, offered more than

8,000 vacancies through at least 150 participating employers.

Laguesma noted that many displaced IGL workers remained hesitant about re-employment.

Some are still optimistic about the possible lifting of POGOs’ total closure, others are already employed and some lukewarm on meager salary offers.

Nevertheless, he said the government would continue assisting the affected workers.

The DOLE has profiled more than 40,000 Filipino workers affected by the closure of POGOs. They were employed in IGLs in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Central Visayas, with salaries ranging from PHP16,000 to PHP22,000.

The DOLE further said it is working to support workers affected by the shutdown of POGOs.

Laguesma said around 40,000 workers were directly impacted by the closures. While some have secured new employment, others continue

to seek opportunities.

“We continue to reach out to affected workers,” Laguesma said, emphasizing that job fairs, livelihood programs, and skills upgrading initiatives are in place to assist them.

At a recent job fair, more than 100 job seekers were hired on the spot, while another 100 received livelihood assistance.

However, DOLE is looking into factors that may have affected the turnout, including the possibility that some workers were still expecting their companies to resume operations, had already secured new jobs—particularly in the IT and business process outsourcing (BPO) sector— or found the offered salaries lower than their previous earnings.aguesma noted that many of the jobs offered at a recent fair in Pasay City required high-level skills. Around 8,000 positions were available, but the number of immediate hires remained low, highlighting the need for upskilling and reskilling programs.

Jan. 28, mandates RDCs to serve as the top planning and policymaking bodies for socio-economic development in their respective regions.

The move is aimed at accelerating economic and social progress by ensuring better coordination between local and national government agencies.

Under the new directive, RDCs will be composed of provincial governors, city mayors, and representatives from government agencies, the private sector, and civil society.

The order also introduces new guidelines for private sector representatives (PSRs), requiring them to be

Filipino citizens with expertise in socioeconomic development.

President Marcos emphasized that RDCs will play a critical role in achieving the goals outlined in the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which prioritizes regional growth and sustainability.

“Regional development councils must be restructured to respond effectively to the country’s economic challenges and ensure a better alignment of national and local priorities,” the executive order said.

The EO also strengthens the role of RDCs in overseeing the implementation of regional investment programs and budget allocations.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) are tasked with guiding RDCs in prioritizing key projects.

Each RDC will be chaired by a local government official and co-chaired by a private sector representative.

The term for both will last three years.

RDCs will also create executive committees to handle urgent matters requiring immediate action.

The executive order takes effect immediately and does not apply to the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

COPS SHOOT DEAD MURDER SUSPECTS IN TAGUM AGENTS INTERCEPT SHABU HIDDEN IN ALUMINUM TUBES

THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted a shipment containing methamphetamine hydrochloride, widely known as “shabu,” hidden inside four aluminum tubes worth P10.22 million.

Customs District Collector Jairus Reyes said a significant breakthrough was made at the Port of Clark by enhancing its profiling and x-ray screening measures. His illegal consignment weighed about 1,502.93 grams and is valued at P10.22 million.

“It was shipped from the United States, deceptively labeled as a “Black Vinyl Window Made Out of PVC,” he said.

The shipment was flagged for physical examination during the initial profiling of advance copies of documents on January 19, 2025. A physical inspection uncovered a black vinyl window with tempered glass, inside which four aluminum tubes were discreetly hidden, each concealing the suspected “Shabu.” Reyes  said that the operation was successful and highlights the agency’s dedication in safeguarding our borders through increased vigilance and close cooperation with our partner agencies.

Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio reiterated that the BOC is dedicated to preventing smuggling activities and strengthening border security to protect our nation and citizens from the threats posed by illicit substances.” Vito Barcelo

TRUMP TO HIT CANADA, CHINA, MEXICO WITH FRESH TARIFFS

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump is set to unveil fresh tariffs Saturday on major trading partners Canada, Mexico, and China, threatening upheaval across supply chains from energy to autos and raising inflation concerns.

Trump has promised to impose 25 percent tariffs on immediate neighbors Canada and Mexico, pointing to their failure to stop illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl across US borders.

He also vowed a 10 percent rate on imports from China, the world’s second-biggest economy, charging that it had a role in producing the drug.

The United States runs “big deficits” with all three countries too — and this is another issue the president has honed in on.

But imposing sweeping tariffs on the three biggest US trading partners carries risks for Trump, who swept to victory in November’s election on the back of public dissatisfaction over costs of living.

Higher import costs would likely “dampen consumer spending and business investment,” said EY chief economist Gregory Daco.

He expects inflation would rise by 0.7 percentage points in the first quarter this year with the tariffs,

before gradually easing.

“Rising trade policy uncertainty will heighten financial market volatility and strain the private sector, despite the administration’s pro-business rhetoric,” he said.

Trump’s supporters have downplayed fears that tariff hikes would fuel inflation, with some suggesting his policy plans involving tax cuts and deregulation could help fuel growth instead.

Democrat lawmakers criticized Trump’s plans with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying Friday: “I am concerned these new tariffs will further drive up costs for American consumers.”

Canada and Mexico are major suppliers of US agricultural products, with imports totaling tens of billions of dollars from each country in a year.

Tariffs would also hit the auto industry hard, with US light vehicle imports from Canada and Mexico in 2024 representing 22 percent of all vehicles sold in

the country, said S&P Global Mobility. It added that automakers and suppliers also produce components throughout the region, meaning tariffs will likely increase costs for vehicles.

“We should be focused on going hard against competitors who rig the game, like China, rather than attacking our allies,” Schumer said in a statement.

Both Canada and Mexico have said they are prepared to respond if Trump acts on tariffs, raising the specter of an escalating conflict.

But White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday dismissed concerns of a trade war.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that Ottawa is ready with“a purposeful, forceful, but reasonable, immediate response.”

“It’s not what we want. But if he moves forward we will also act,” he said, referring to Trump.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government would await any tariff announcement “with a cool head.”

“We have a plan A, plan B, plan C for whatever the US government decides,”she said, without giving details.

Hiking import taxes on crude oil from countries like Canada and Mexico could also bring “huge implications for US energy prices, especially in the US Midwest,” according to David Goldwyn and Joseph Webster of the Atlantic Council. AFP

‘CITY-KILLER’ ASTEROID MIGHT HIT EARTH—HOW WORRIED SHOULD WE BE?

WASHINGTON — A colossal explosion in the sky, unleashing energy hundreds of times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. A blinding flash nearly as bright as the Sun. Shockwaves powerful enough to flatten everything for miles.

It may sound apocalyptic, but a newly detected asteroid nearly the size of a football field now has a greater than one percent chance of colliding with Earth in about eight years.

Such an impact has the potential for city-level devastation, depending on where it strikes.

Scientists aren’t panicking yet, but

they are watching closely.

“At this point, it’s ‘Let’s pay a lot of attention, let’s get as many assets as we can observing it,’” Bruce Betts, chief scientist of The Planetary Society, told AFP.

Dubbed 2024 YR4, the asteroid was first spotted on December 27, 2024, by the El Sauce Observatory in Chile. Based on its brightness, astronomers estimate it is between 40 to 90 meters wide.

By New Year’s Eve, it had landed on the desk of Kelly Fast, acting planetary defense officer at US space agency NASA, as an object of concern.

GENERATIVE AI’S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

PARIS

— The surge in generative artificial intelligence (AI) is being met with growing fears about the technology’s ecological footprint, one of the top questions up for discussion at a global summit in Paris on February 10 to 11.

Here are some key figures on the state of play in early 2025:

Ten times Google’s power

Every request made to OpenAI’s chatbot, which is able to generate all kinds of responses to natural-language queries, consumes 2.9 watt-hours of electricity.

That is ten times more than the equivalent figure for a Google search, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

OpenAI claims that ChatGPT now has 300 million weekly users making a total of one billion requests every single day.

Beyond ChatGPT, which fronted generative AI’s emergence into public consciousness in 2022, there are thousands of chatbots.

One survey by French pollsters Ifop found

that 70 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds in the

country said they used generative AI.

In America, a Morning Consult poll found that 65 percent of 13 to 17-year-olds used generative AI, with the number close to half for the general population.

Bigger than France and Germany

Generative AI would not function without data centers hosting vast reserves of information and computing power.

In 2023, data centers accounted for almost 1.4 percent of global electricity consumption, according to a study by consultancy Deloitte.

But with massive investments planned into generative AI, the figure is expected to reach three percent by 2030 — or 1,000 terawatt-hours (TWh). Deloitte said that was comparable with the combined annual consumption of France and Germany.

The IEA forecast a more than 75 percent increase in data center power consumption by 2026 compared with 2022’s levels, to 800 TWh. AFP

“You get observations, they drop off again. This one looked like it had the potential to stick around,” she told AFP.

The risk assessment kept climbing, and on January 29, the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), a global planetary defense collaboration, issued a memo.

According to the latest calculations from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, there is a 1.6 percent chance the asteroid will strike Earth on December 22, 2032.

If it does hit, possible impact sites include over the eastern Pacific

Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia, the IAWN memo states.

2024 YR4 follows a highly elliptical, four-year orbit, swinging through the inner planets before shooting past Mars and out toward Jupiter.

For now, it’s zooming away from Earth -- its next close pass won’t come until 2028.

“The odds are very good that not only will this not hit Earth, but at some point in the next months to few years, that probability will go to zero,” said Betts. AFP

TAIWAN BANS GOV’T AGENCIES FROM USING CHINA’S DEEPSEEK

TAIPEI — Taiwan has banned workers in the public sector and at key infrastructure facilities from using DeepSeek, saying it was a Chinese product and could endanger national security.

DeepSeek launched its R1 chatbot last month, claiming it matches the capacity of artificial intelligence pace-setters in the United States for a fraction of the investment.

Countries including South Korea, Ireland, France, Australia, and Italy have raised questions about the Chinese AI startup’s data practices.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs said Friday all government agencies and critical infrastructure should not use DeepSeek because it “endangers national information security.”

“DeepSeek AI service is a Chinese product,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Its operation involves cross-border transmission and information leakage and other information security concerns.”

Taiwan has long accused China of using “grey zone” tactics — actions that fall short of an act of war — against the island, including cyberattacks, as Beijing presses its claims of sovereignty over the island.

Since 2019, Taiwan has banned government agencies from using information and communication technology products and services that pose a threat to “national information security.” AFP

COLOMBIA OFFERS TO PAY FOR DEPORTATION OF ITS CITIZENS FROM US

BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Colombia has offered to pay for the “dignified” deportation of its citizens from the United States, the foreign ministry said Friday, a week after a public spat between presidents Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump over the removal of migrants.

The two leaders had issued threats and counter threats of major trade tariffs of up to 50 percent, and Washington’s embassy in Bogota stopped issuing visas from Monday to Friday in retaliation for Petro’s refusal to allow US military planes to return Colombian migrants to their country.

Petro had accused the United States of treating the migrants like criminals, placing them in shackles and handcuffs.

Colombia’s foreign ministry said Friday it had proposed to Mauricio Claver-Carone, Trump’s special envoy for Latin America, that Bogota would “immediately assume the transfer of all citizens deported by the United States,” covering transportation costs for its nationals, according to a statement.

Petro has said his government would not allow expelled migrants to travel in handcuffs. AFP

COUNTRYWIDE ALERT IN UKRAINE AS AIR FORCE WARNS OF MISSILES

KYIV — Ukrainian authorities issued air raid alerts for the entire country on Saturday, as the air force warned of missile and drone threats in multiple regions.

“Missile threat to Mykolaiv and Kherson regions,” the air force said on Telegram, adding that missiles were moving toward the Sumy and Poltava regions as well.

“Enemy strike UAV threat for Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Chernigiv, and Zhytomyr regions,” it said in a separate post warning of Russian drones.

A drone attack in Zaporizhzhya earlier Saturday caused heavy damage to homes and businesses, the local governor said.

The nearly three-year conflict has shown no signs of deescalating since US President Donald Trump took office on January 20 after promising to swiftly end the fighting.

On Friday evening, a Russian missile attack struck the center of the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa, wounding at least seven people and damaging historic buildings, officials said. AFP

MARK Anthony Moreno’s venture into business began during the COVID-19 pandemic when many were forced to adapt to a new way of living. What started as a way to help his parents transitioned into early retirement and quickly grew into two thriving ventures: Nox Beanbags and Nox Hydrofarm.

Driven by a commitment to quality, creativity and sustainability, these ventures not only brought financial stability but also gave Moreno the opportunity to bring his family closer together.

Nox Beanbags

The foundation of Nox Beanbags was built on necessity, family and Moreno’s drive to create something meaningful.

When his mother, a seasoned seamstress, was forced into early retirement, Moreno knew he had to find a way to keep her engaged and active.

His mother had worked for years as a supervisor in a manufacturing site in Dasmariñas, Cavite and had always shown immense skill in crafting textiles. Recognizing her talent, Moreno encouraged her to retire and proposed starting a business together.

“I could see how hard it was for my mom to walk away from work after so many years. But I also knew her skills had so much value. It wasn’t just about financial support; it was about helping her find a new sense of purpose,” Moreno reflected.

Driven by a love for design, Moreno began exploring the beanbag market, researching materials and coming up with creative ways to make them stand out.

His mother took on the production side, working with just two industrial sewing machines to start.

The small operation grew quickly as they added more equipment, and their beanbags gained popularity for their durability and comfort.

At first, they used standard styrofoam beads for filling, but after observing how the quality degraded over time, Moreno knew there had to be a better solution. He turned to Uratex’s ground foam as a superior alternative.

“We’re selling comfort and quality. For me, it’s about giving our customers a product that can stand the test of time,” Moreno said.

Inspired by his fascination with mythology, Moreno named the beanbags after iconic figures such as Clio, Poseidon, Perseus, Hercules, Zeus and Athena. The Kraken model, the largest in their range at six feet in diameter, became a standout piece—a perfect blend of comfort and design.

Nox Bean Bags quickly gained trust and fandom from events like Tiktok Live, other corporate events, and personal celebrations.

Nox HydroFarm

As Nox Beanbags flourished, Moreno’s entrepreneurial drive pushed him to expand into a second venture: Nox HydroFarm located in Barangay Kaybagal East, Tagaytay City.

His father, a former army man with a penchant for gardening, had been experimenting with growing vegetables during his retirement. However, he struggled to yield consistent results. One day, after visiting a local farm-to-table

restaurant, Moreno was inspired by the quality of the produce and decided to try his hand at hydroponic farming.

“It was that visit to the restaurant that sparked the idea. I thought, ‘Why can’t we grow fresh produce in our own backyard using modern techniques?’ It was a challenge, but I saw it as an opportunity to learn and innovate,” Moreno recalled.

Moreno, who had no prior experience with hydroponics, immersed himself in research. He enrolled in online courses from Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, spending the next year learning about the nuances of this farming technique. His first attempt at growing lettuce was a failure—the produce was bitter and inedible—but his persistence paid off.

After refining the process, he set up a small greenhouse, and to his surprise, the first batch sold out in just two weeks.

The success of the first greenhouse led him to expand the operation, leasing a 300-squaremeter lot for a larger farming space. By mid-2022, Nox Hydrofarm was producing high-quality hydroponically grown lettuce, kale, and, at some point, cherry tomatoes and bell peppers. His use of Rye-Swan lettuce, a premium variety imported from the Netherlands, allowed him to sell at a higher price point, further differentiating his products from others on the market.

They can trust that their hard-earned money will reach their loved ones promptly through our extensive network,” said Palawan Group executive vice president and chief financial

TECH PROFESSIONAL FINDS SUCCESS IN DUAL VENTURES

As demand for locally grown, fresh produce increased, Nox Hydrofarm expanded into multiple farms from Farm A to Farms B, C, and D, securing contracts with top restaurants, such as a fresh partnership with a new restaurant run and operated by a worldrenowned chef, and local businesses. Moreno’s ability to identify trends and innovate in the farming sector has spruced up his reputation as a forwardthinking entrepreneur.

Balancing 2 businesses Managing both Nox Beanbags and Nox Hydrofarm while holding down a full-time job in the semiconductor industry was a formidable challenge for Moreno. Yet, he juggled both roles with determination, using his weekends and evenings to oversee production, marketing and distribution for both ventures.

His parents continued to play an integral role—his mother ran production for Nox Beanbags, while his father assisted with the farming operations—and his siblings also contributed to the businesses.

“It was a balancing act, but I had to do it. I was working during the week, but the weekends were for the business. It was exhausting at times, but I knew it was worth it,” Moreno intimated.

Father, son and entrepreneur

At forty, Moreno’s success is built on family. As a father to 13-year-old Maki, he’s driven by the desire to create a future where his son can thrive.

His endeavors are driven by the desire to set a positive example for his son, teaching him that hard work, dedication, and innovation can lead to meaningful success.

“My son is my biggest motivation. I want him to understand that you can create something valuable if you’re passionate and committed” he said.

Moreno, known as “Nox” to his friends, is a product of the scholarship community. He pursued his Electrical and Communications Engineering (ECE) degree while working as a technician at a semiconductor company.

“I believe in creating products that have lasting value, whether it’s a beanbag that’s built to last or fresh produce that’s grown sustainably. It’s about leaving something behind that matters,” he said.

A ‘GOLDEN’ SUZUKI EXPERIENCE

SUZUKI Philippines deserves high praise as it marks an impressive 50 years in the local automotive industry. Originally established under Rufino D. Antonio & Associates, Inc. in 1957, the company evolved from an architectural and engineering firm into a formidable player in the motorcycle, automotive, and marine sectors over the decades.

The motorcycle business kicked off in 1959 and expanded to become a fully-owned Japanese entity by 1985, officially rebranding as Suzuki Philippines, Inc. In 1995, the company took over the automobile operations of Pilipinas Transport Industries, Inc., venturing into the four-wheeled market. With the rising popularity of marine sports in the Philippines, Suzuki also began distributing outboard motors in 2016.

Suzuki motorcycles have consistently ranked among the top sellers in the country, and their diverse range of vehicles has become a staple choice for local consumers. Many may not realize that Suzuki has been active in the marine market since 2016, offering powerful outboard motors that enhance water sports experiences.

This milestone was celebrated recently during the One Suzuki Kick-Off Ride 2025, a two-day event designed to immerse media and guests in the Suzuki experience. Key figures from the company, including president Koichiro Hirao and managing director Boying Mojica, were present to engage with participants. The event kicked off with a grand convoy featuring Suzuki’s entire lineup— from Underbones and Scooters to Big Bikes—beginning at the company’s expansive head office in Carmelray Industrial Park, Laguna. The procession wound its way to Batangas, concluding at the picturesque Pico de Loro in Nasugbu. I had the pleasure of handling the Suzuki XL7 Hybrid as part of this impressive vehicle lineup, alongside other Suzuki Jimnys. Upon arrival at Pico de Loro, participants were whisked away to the nearby Punta Fuego Yacht Club, where nine speedboats, each powered by two robust 300hp Suzuki engines, took us on an exhilarating voyage along the Hamilo Coast. Everyone aboard agreed that it was a thrilling experience, showcasing the power and performance of Suzuki’s marine engines. Interestingly, Koichiro Hirao has dedicated 29 years to Suzuki. He began as a sales representative at Suzuki Motorcycle Co. in 1985, the same year Suzuki Philippines was founded. His journey saw him rise through the ranks to become president and COO of Thai Suzuki Motor Co. in 2010, before being appointed president of Suzuki Philippines last year.

UNDERSTANDING DIARRHEA IN CATS

DIARRHEA is a common issue that affects cats of all ages and breeds. It is characterized by loose, watery stools that occur more frequently than normal. While occasional diarrhea can be a minor concern, persistent diarrhea may indicate a more serious underlying health issue.

Causes of Diarrhea in Cats

Dietary Changes

One of the primary causes of diarrhea in cats is changes in diet. Cats are sensitive to sudden alterations in their food, and introducing new foods too quickly can lead to gastrointestinal upset. As noted by PetMD in their article, “Cat Diarrhea: Causes and What to Do About It,” it is crucial to transition to new diets gradually over several days to minimize digestive disturbances. This allows the cat's digestive system to adjust to the new ingredients.

Food Intolerance and Allergies

Food intolerances and allergies can also trigger diarrhea. Cats may develop sensitivities to specific ingredients, such as certain proteins or grains. Hill's Pet, in their article, “Managing Cat Diarrhea: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment,” discusses how these intolerances can lead to inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in diarrhea. Common allergens include dairy products, chicken, and fish, which may cause adverse reactions in some cats.

Infections

Infectious agents, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, can cause diarrhea in cats. Bacterial infec-

AS CAT owners, we often wonder which human food and herbs are safe for our feline companions. Basil, a popular herb used in many dishes, is one such plant that many pet owners have in their kitchen or garden. Basil is generally safe for cats in small amounts and as with any food outside of a cat's natural diet, there are some considerations to keep in mind.

tions, such as Salmonella or E. coli, can originate from contaminated food or water. Viral infections, such as feline panleukopenia, can severely affect a cat's gastrointestinal health. Additionally, parasitic infections from organisms like Giardia or roundworms can lead to diarrhea, as highlighted by the information from PetMD. Regular veterinary checkups and fecal examinations can help detect these infections early.

Stress and Environmental Changes

Stress can significantly impact a cat's gastrointestinal health. Changes in the environment, such as moving to a new home, the introduction of new pets, or alterations in routine, can induce stress and lead to diarrhea. Hill's Pet emphasizes that stressrelated diarrhea is often temporary but can be distressing for both the cat and the owner.

Medical Conditions

Underlying medical conditions may also contribute to diarrhea in cats. Chronic illnesses, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hyperthyroidism, or pancreatitis, can disrupt normal digestive processes. PetMD indicates that these conditions can lead to prolonged or recurrent diarrhea, necessitating veterinary intervention for diagnosis and treatment.

Medications

Certain medications can also cause diarrhea as a side effect. Antibiotics, for instance, can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, leading to gastrointestinal upset. Hill's Pet notes that when antibiotics are prescribed, veterinarians may recommend probiotics to help restore the natural gut flora and mitigate diarrhea.

Symptoms of Diarrhea

Recognizing the symptoms of diarrhea in cats is crucial for timely intervention. Common signs include:

• Frequent, loose, or watery stools

• Straining to defecate

• Increased urgency to go outside or use the litter box

• Dehydration, indicated by lethargy or dry gums

Is It Safe for Cats?

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is non-toxic to cats, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This means that if your cat nibbles on a basil leaf, there is no immediate danger. Unlike some plants that are highly toxic to cats—such as lilies, onions, and garlic—basil does not contain harmful compounds that could cause severe poisoning.

“Although basil is non-toxic, it doesn’t mean it should become a regular part of your cat’s diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their primary source of nutrition should come from animal-based protein,” said Dr. William Jones in “Herbs Safe for Cats” published in the Paws and Claws website.

“ While they might occasionally show curiosity about plants, they don’t derive significant nutrients from them.” Dr. Jones added.

Potential Benefits

Although cats do not need herbs in their diet, basil does contain some beneficial compounds. According to Dr. Jones, these are the benefits of basil:

1. Antioxidants: Basil is rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress in the body. These compounds may provide some minor health benefits by reducing inflammation and supporting immune function.

2. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Basil has natural antiinflammatory properties that may help with mild pain or swelling. While this is more relevant to humans, it could offer some relief to cats with minor discomfort.

3. Antibacterial and Antiviral Effects: Some studies suggest that basil has antimicrobial properties, which might help fight infections. However, there is no strong evidence that this benefits cats directly.

Despite these potential advantages, the amounts of basil a cat would consume are likely too small to provide any real health benefits.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Even though basil is not toxic to cats, there are still some possible side effects to be aware of:

• Abdominal discomfort or bloating

• Loss of appetite

If a cat exhibits these symptoms, especially if they persist for more than 24 hours or are accompanied by vomiting, consult a veterinarian promptly.

Treatment Options for Diarrhea in Cats

Dietary Management

One of the first steps in treating diarrhea in cats often involves dietary management. A veterinarian may recommend a temporary switch to a bland diet, such as boiled chicken or rice, to help soothe the gastrointestinal tract. Gradually reintroducing the cat's regular diet can help identify any food intolerances or allergies. Hill's Pet highlights that a specialized diet may be necessary for cats with chronic diarrhea, focusing on easily digestible ingredients.

Hydration

Maintaining hydration is essential for cats experiencing diarrhea. Increased fluid loss can lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous. PetMD suggests providing plenty of fresh water and monitoring the cat's drinking habits. In severe cases, intravenous fluids may be necessary, and veterinary care should be sought immediately.

Medications

In some cases, medications may be prescribed to treat diarrhea. Antidiarrheal medications, such as loperamide, may be recommended for shortterm relief. However, these should only be given under veterinary guidance, as they may not be suitable for all cats. Additionally, if an underlying infection is identified, appropriate antibiotics may be prescribed.

Probiotics

Probiotics can be beneficial in managing diarrhea by restoring the balance of healthy gut bacteria. Hill's Pet points out that probiotics can help improve digestive health and may be particularly useful after antibiotic treatment. These supple-

Veterinary Care If diarrhea persists despite home treatment efforts, or if the cat shows signs of severe distress, veterinary care should be sought. A veterinarian can perform a thorough examination, potentially including diagnostic tests such as bloodwork, imaging, or fecal analysis, to determine the underlying cause of diarrhea. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications.

Prevention Strategies

Preventing diarrhea in cats involves several proactive measures, including:

Gradual Diet Changes: Transitioning to new food slowly can help prevent gastrointestinal upset. Balanced Diet: Providing a well-balanced diet tailored to the cat's specific needs can reduce the risk of food-related issues.

Stress Management: Minimizing stress through a stable environment and gradual introductions to changes can benefit a cat's digestive health.

Regular Veterinary Visits: Routine check-ups can help detect and address potential health issues early. By implementing these strategies, cat owners can help reduce the risk of diarrhea and promote overall digestive health.

Diarrhea in cats is a manageable condition that can arise from various causes, including dietary changes, infections, stress, and underlying medical conditions. Timely recognition of symptoms and appropriate treatment strategies, such as dietary management, hydration, and veterinary care, are essential for alleviating the condition. Through proactive measures, cat owners can help maintain their pets' gastrointestinal health and overall well-being.

1. Digestive Upset – If a cat eats too much basil, it might experience mild stomach issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, or gas. This is because their digestive system is not designed to process large amounts of plant matter.

2. Allergic Reactions – While rare, some cats may have an allergic reaction to basil. Signs of an allergy could include itching, swelling, or respiratory distress.

If you notice these symptoms after your cat eats basil, consult a veterinarian immediately.

3. Essential Oils in Basil – Some varieties of basil contain essential oils that, in high concentrations, could be irritating to cats. While fresh basil leaves contain only small amounts, basil essential oil is much more potent and should never be given to cats. Essential oils can be toxic to felines because their livers are not efficient at processing certain compounds.

How Much Basil Can Cats Eat?

If your cat occasionally nibbles on a basil leaf, there is no need to worry. However, basil should only be given in moderation. A small amount—such as a tiny leaf or a sprinkle of chopped basil on their food—is generally safe. The following guidelines, as suggested by Dr. Jones, should be kept in mind when giving basil to your cats: 1. Fresh basil is preferable. Dried basil is more

FRUIT juices may be an essential part of your regular shopping list, but do you know what's actually inside that cold juice can? If you zoom in on labels, it's easy to figure out that not all fruit juices on the shelves may be as real and fresh as they claim to be.

Luckily, Filipinos don’t have to look hard for juices that keep it real. Del Monte’s 100% Pineapple Juice is a trusted and beloved name for almost a hundred years and continues to be the juice of choice for many drinkers. It is as real and fresh as it can get because of the company’s best-in-industry sourcing and juicing approach—all rooted in Del Monte’s same-day “farm-to-can” process.

“Farm-to-can” is not a slogan — it’s an assurance that you get the real deal. It’s a procedure that allows Del Monte pineapples to be picked, pressed, and packed on the same day—sealing more of the pineapple flavor and goodness.

The pineapples are handpicked from Del Monte’s 30,000-hectare plantation in Bukidnon. They are immediately tested for quality and ripeness to ensure only the best of the harvest are prepared for juicing, then transported to the nearby manufacturing facility of Del Monte in Cagayan de Oro.

Once ready, the pineapples are promptly pressed to keep the fruit’s natural flavors and nutrients intact. All of this is done under the

watchful eyes of Del Monte’s pineapple experts to guarantee safety and quality in every drop.

According to Dr. Celeste Tanchoco, Country Director of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI) – Southeast Asia Region Philippine Committee, Inc., and former Chief Science Research Specialist at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), drinking fruit juice made through the “farm-to-can” method is similar to enjoying its freshly-pressed counterpart. So whenever you open a can of Del Monte 100% Pineapple Juice, you are guaranteed to enjoy authentic freshness straight from the can.

Tanchoco explained that with 100% Pineapple Juice, you get the full, fresh flavor straight from the fruit’s natural water—nothing diluted or artificial. Del Monte’s 100% Pineapple Juice contains vitamins A, C, and E to support the immune system, fiber to aid digestion, and minerals like Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, and Zinc for that added health boost. It’s a fat-free and cholesterolfree food/drink with no sugar added, making it a healthy lifestyle option.

“In addition, 100% Pineapple Juice contains bioactive compounds, known as phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties and potential health benefits. Examples include flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids,” Tanchoco said.

SHOWBIZ RUMORS:

‘FAME ISN’T FOR ME’

CONTENT creator Jamela Villanueva is no stranger to public attention, especially after last year’s headline-making controversy involving her ex-boyfriend and actor Anthony Jennings and actress Maris Racal

The unexpected drama thrust her into the spotlight, making her personal life a topic of intense speculation.

Just as the buzz around her name was starting to settle, her recent launch as the new ambassador of Ampong Dental Essentials reignited the conversation surrounding her—but this time, for a different reason.

“Is she joining showbiz?” The public and industry insiders alike began questioning whether the 26-year-old was taking her first step toward an entertainment career.

However, Jamela is quick to shut down the rumors, insisting that showbusiness isn’t part of her plans.

“It’s still not something I see myself doing,” she admitted. “I don’t think my mental health can handle being in that kind of industry.”

Having seen the inner workings of the entertainment world firsthand, the content creator knows it’s not the life she wants.

“I was exposed to it. I saw it with my own eyes,” she reflected, alluding to the controversy that unexpectedly placed her under the public’s microscope.

Part of that scrutiny stemmed from her decision to release the alleged messages between Anthony and Maris, a move that sparked mixed reactions online. Addressing the issue during a group interview, Jamela explained why she felt compelled to do what she did.

a normal person. I didn’t have

“I was just pushed to do it because so much was happening. I’m just a normal person. I didn’t have anyone to defend me. It’s really difficult when you’re constantly being judged by people,” admitted Jamela.

Rather than chasing fame, she is now focusing on rebuilding herself and prioritizing her well-being.

“Moving on isn’t just about forgetting the past. It’s also about choosing yourself in the present— about how you rebuild yourself despite everything that has happened to you,” she explained.

A crucial part of her healing process, she shared, has been surrounding herself with the right people.

“I’m careful about who I allow in my circle. I choose people who truly support me, who will lead me in the right direction and call me out when I’m wrong,” Jamela added.

Above all, she refuses to compromise her self-worth, stating, “My self-worth is nonnegotiable.”

Still, Jamela acknowledged that healing isn’t a straight path, and forgiveness doesn’t happen overnight.

“I’m still in the process,” she admitted when asked if she has completely moved on.

But she also understands that healing looks different for everyone.

“Behind every smile, there’s a story. Just because I haven’t completely forgiven doesn’t mean I can’t smile,” said Jamela, emphasizing that moving on isn’t about stepping into the limelight—it’s about reclaiming her peace.

The film follows a cunning couple, Ray (Anthony) and Jessa (Maris), who double as con artists, infiltrating high society by assuming false identities to swindle the wealthy.

Their charade to fool the upper class will test their skill, their charm, and ultimately, their love for each other,” the synopsis stated.

As they settle into their new luxurious environment, the couple immerses themselves in highsociety social scenes, attending lavish and opulent parties to forge connections with the elites. To achieve their goal, they must maintain their elaborate ruse and exploit their neighbors’ wealth while keeping their own secrets hidden.

Currently, the two are co-stars in the action drama Incognito

FOLLOWING a successful run last season, Repertory Philippines (REP) is excited to launch its 88th season with the return of the beloved musical comedy I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. The show will run from Feb. 20 to March 9 at the REP Eastwood Theater in Eastwood City Walk, Quezon City. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, the longest-running off-Broadway show, is a twoact romantic musical comedy set against the backdrop of a bustling metropolis and the everpresent glow of dating apps and social media. With book and lyrics by award-winning Joe DiPietro and music by renowned composer Jimmy Brooks, this classic production was refreshed by the First Lady of Philippine Musical Theater Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo for restaging in 2024. This fresh take on a timeless tale explores the highs and lows of love in today’s fast-paced world. Played by four actors in twenty vignettes, it covers “everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were

afraid to admit.” From awkward first dates to courtship, marriage, and the complexities of commitment, each vignette captures the essence of contemporary romance, reminding us that amidst the chaos, love and genuine connections still prevail.

The original cast of Gian Magdangal Gabby Padilla, Krystal Kane, and Marvin Ong make their triumphant return to reprise their roles as the 40 characters, and Davy Narciso and Barbara Jance once again join the cast as male and female swings, respectively. Some of the most memorable vignettes include a hopeful “I Will Be Loved Tonight” before a first date; a passionfilled musing of a man still in love with his wife in “Shouldn’t I Be Less I Love With You”; a middle-aged woman navigating online dating in “The Very First Dating Video of Rose Ritz”; and the sweet, blossoming romance between senior citizens in “I Can Live With That.” Since its debut, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change has been praised as a highlight of the 2024 theater scene, earning 13 Gawad Buhay Awards and two Aliw Awards nominations.

CCULINARY ARTS STUDENT TO COMPETE IN YOUNG CHEF OLYMPIAD IN INDIA

ULINARY Arts Management student Yves Gabriel Cabrera Po is set to represent the Philippines at the 11th International Young Chef Olympiad (YCO) in India. Po, 22, from Puerto Princesa, Palawan, will compete in the world’s largest student chef competition.

The event, which brings together participants from over 50 countries, is hosted by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM).

“This opportunity not only gives me exposure to the global culinary industry, but also allows me to showcase my skills and creativity on an international stage,” Po said.

The YCO will kick off with a grand opening ceremony in Goa, followed by tournament rounds in cities like Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore. The finals will be held in Kolkata. Po will compete in Group D alongside student chefs from Australia, Kazakhstan, Timor-Leste, Greece, Albania, Uganda, Nigeria, and Uzbekistan, with the group’s competition taking place in Hyderabad.

“It’s an honor to represent my country and show the world the talent, dedication, and passion that Filipino chefs bring to the table,” Po shared.

Po, a student at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management, is mentored by Chef Dean Gabriel Chan Ng Tio , a parttime faculty member at the college and operations manager of his family-owned businesses. Tio is confident

in Po’s abilities.

“I believe Yves is capable of winning due to his strong willpower and determination. He is a student who is hardworking, humble, and patient,” Tio said.

For his first round, Po will prepare a vegetarian dish and a choux pastry dessert using a set of provided ingredients. Last year, Po earned a silver medal in the Filipino Cuisine Team Challenge at the Philippine Culinary Cup, alongside fellow Benildean Andriks Dela Cruz. He sees this experience as a key strength heading into the Olympiad.

“Competitions like this have taught me the importance of balance, precision, and efficiency. They have also helped me organize my thoughts and focus on what is achievable within the time limit,” Po explained.

His preparation for the YCO focused on discipline, composure, and refining his culinary skills.

“I’ve trained myself to stay focused, even when I make mistakes. Instead of being discouraged, I take every error as an opportunity to learn and improve. It’s important to enjoy the process and embrace the journey,” Po commented.

The grand final and closing ceremony of the Young Chef Olympiad will take place on Feb. 8.
