BRITISH-ISRAELI NAMED DUTERTE’S LEAD COUNSEL

LEGAL TEAM TO CHALLENGE ICC JURISDICTION—ROQUE

VICE President Sara Duterte has named lawyer Nicholas Kaufman as the lead counsel of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is facing charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

LEAVING the Netherlands is not an option for Vice President Sara Duterte at the moment as she intends to stay until another family member arrives to ensure her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, is not left alone.

Speaking to reporters outside of the ICC detention facility Friday, the Vice President said her father had repeatedly urged her to return to the Philippines during their onehour visit.

“I will not leave until a relative comes to make sure there is a next of kin,” said the younger Duterte, also facing an upcoming impeachment trial in the Philippines.

JUSTICE is starting to roll down following former President Rodrigo Duterte’s first appearance before the International Criminal Court, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro on Saturday said.

“Witnessing the first appearance attended by FP Duterte before the ICC, everybody could see how justice starts to roll down,” Castro said in a statement.

“When we talked, as a request, he asked me to go home. He repeatedly said, ‘Do not leave the country. Do not leave the Philippines.’ He said I should already go back and leave him here. But I said I cannot immediately go back because no one will decide for him outside. Very limited people have access to him right now,” she added.

Only allowed to meet her father in the ICC’s visiting area and not inside the detention facility, she assured the public the former president was in “good spirit.”

“He is well taken care of. He just commented that he really misses Filipino food, that’s all. Very recently their meal had rice, so that was a

“This is what we call a fair trial,” she added.

According to her, the ICC denied any postponement of the hearing as it was not yet the time for Duterte to present his defense.

“The judge even emphasized that the Court’s doctor gave the opinion that FP Duterte is fully mentally aware and fit and that he had undergone further checks and tests at the detention facility,” Castro said. Duterte, for his part, assured his supporters “there will be a day of reckoning for all” in a message relayed through Vice President Sara Duterte

good development,” she said.

The Vice President confirmed arrangements are already underway to grant family members access to her father and that she is working on assembling his legal team while in the Netherlands.

“So I told him that I just have to form that legal team, then I can work remotely in the Philippines talking to the legal team. And then, yes, they just need the next of kin to come here. And everyone’s applying for a visa right now,” she said.

Malacañang previously confirmed the Vice President was granted travel authority until April 30 for multiple entries into different countries.

during her visit at the ICC detention facility in Scheveningen.

“I told him a lot of people are crying. They are depressed, hurt, stressed about what happened and what is happening right now, and what is happening in the country,” Sara told reporters in a mix of English and Filipino on Friday.

“Then he (Rodrigo) said, ‘Tell them to relax. Everything has an end. There will be a day of reckoning for all,’” she added.

The former president is facing charges of crimes against humanity over his administration’s controversial war on drugs.

Kaufman is set to join the legal team, which also includes former executive secretary Salvador Medialdea and former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

The Vice President said her father’s defense team will meet with Kaufman upon the latter’s arrival in The Hague.

Kaufman, an ICC-accredited lawyer, is a member of the British Bar.

The British-Israeli lawyer’s LinkedIn profile showed that he studied law at the University of Cambridge.

His profile also states that he specializes in “international criminal law, supra-national regulatory law, and commercial arbitration” on top of being a “legal public relations specialist with an emphasis on international reputation management, litigation, and crisis public relations.

Kaufman was previously appointed as the counsel for Maxime Jeoffroy Eli Mokom Gawaka, the alleged former National Coordinator of Operations of the Anti-Balaka who was suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly in various locations in the Central African Republic.

The pre-trial chamber, however, revoked Kaufman’s appointment as Mokom’s counsel due to a “conflict of interest” related to his representation of other clients.

Kaufman also served as counsel for Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, President and Commanderin-chief of the Movement for the Liberation of Congo, but later requested to withdraw from the latter’s representation as the client “could not meet the obligation to pay for the legal services provided.”

He also previously served as lawyer of Aisha Gaddafi, daughter of the late Libyan leader Muammar who also faced the ICC.

Roque, for his part, said they will challenge the ICC’s jurisdiction before the next hearing on September 23.

Roque criticized the ICC for allegedly disregarding the issue of kidnapping as a factor that should strip the court of jurisdiction.

MARCOS HIKES AFP DAILY SUBSISTENCE ALLOWANCE TO P350

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved a 133 percent increase in the daily subsistence allowance for officers and enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from P150 to P350. Outlined in Executive Order No. 84 signed on March 14, the adjustment will apply retroactively starting January 1 and will take effect immediately upon its publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.

“It is imperative to increase the subsistence allowance of all officers and enlisted personnel of the AFP, to protect and promote their welfare, in recognition of their sacrifices and perseverance in defending and upholding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Mr. Marcos sid in his order.

The government last adjusted the AFP’s subsistence allowance in 2015 under Congress Joint Resolution No. 5.

The adjustment will also apply to trainees, probationary second lieutenants and ensigns undergoing training, Citizen Military Training cadets, and reservists.

Speaker Martin Romualdez, who pushed the additional subsistence allowance under the 2025 national budget, said: “This is a well-deserved increase for our brave and dedicated soldiers who tirelessly defend our country. It is a concrete manifestation of our commitment to improving their welfare and recognizing their sacrifices for our nation.”

COMELEC SAYS PRINTING OF 68.5M BALLOTS NOW COMPLETE

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported that it has completed printing over 68.5 million official ballots for this year’s midterm elections, meeting its selfimposed deadline.

With the ballots now printed, Comelec Chairman George Garcia shared that the next steps will involve final testing and sealing, which will continue through mid-April.

“If there are any defective ballots— whether one or two or more—the National Printing Office will immediately reprint them. The next phase is to deploy the ballots and machines, which will be sent out to various regions across the country,” Garcia said.

Around two million ballots were deemed defective and needed to be reprinted.

The reprinting process is already underway and is expected to be completed within a few days.

“We are slowly reprinting them… hopefully, we’ll be able to reprint the two million. It only takes about a day, but reprinting isn’t as simple as regular printing—it requires precision,” Garcia explained.

“The reprinting needs to be done for every precinct in each town or city. Again, this is not an issue,” he added.

After the final testing and sealing, the ballots will be transported to Comelec’s warehouse in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, for safekeeping.

“Just because they’ve been printed doesn’t mean it’s done. In coordination with the Philippine National Police, all trucks transporting ballots from Sta. Rosa to the port or airport will be escorted. We have monitoring at the operations center, linked to real-time updates on the cargo’s location,” Garcia emphasized.

Comelec also urged voters to be cautious when shading their ballots, reminding them that each individual will only receive one.

The commission reminded the public not to draw on or take pictures of a shaded ballot.

G7 DIPLOMATS CONDEMN CHINA’S ‘DANGEROUS ACTIONS’ IN INDO-PACIFIC

THE top diplomats of the Group of Seven (G7) have condemned China’s “illicit, provocative, coercive, and dangerous actions” in the Indo-Pacific, expressing concern over the harassment of Filipino vessels in the South China Sea (SCS).

A statement from the US Embassy in Manila on Saturday said the G7 raised concerns about the situation in the SCS, including the increasing use of dangerous maneuvers and water cannons against Philippine vessels.

The G7 foreign ministers, who met in Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada, from March 12-14, also criticized efforts to restrict freedom of navigation and overflight through militarization and coercion in the SCS, calling these actions a viola-

The group pledged to cooperate in “increasing security and resilience across the IndoPacific.”

“G7 members reiterated their commitment to upholding a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific, based on sovereignty, territorial integrity, peaceful resolution of disputes, fundamental freedoms, and human rights,” the statement added.

In a declaration on maritime security, the foreign ministers supported negotiations for “provisional arrangements of a practical nature,” but did not specify areas.

“In areas pending final delimitation, we emphasize the impor-

tance of coastal states refraining from unilateral actions that alter the marine environment in ways that hinder final agreements, and the need to pursue practical provisional arrangements,” they said.

The Philippines and China previously signed a “provisional arrangement” for the country’s unhampered rotation and resupply (RORE) missions to the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal. Manila continues to honor this agreement “without prejudice” to its position on the West Philippine Sea, the country’s maritime zone within the South China Sea.

The G7 consists of the world’s leading industrialized democracies: Canada, France, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

PNR LEGAZPI-NAGA RESUMES

THE Philippine National Railways (PNR) will resume its Legazpi-Naga and vice versa train services on Sunday after  an inspection train went off track when it was hit by a tanker truck along Paloyon Crossing in Nabua, Camarines Sur on Saturday.

The Legazpi-Naga (4:49 a.m.) and Naga-Legazpi (5:30 p.m.) routes will be operational anew.

“The Legazpi to Naga route and vice versa must be opened immediately due to its connectivity demand,” PNR said in a statement released by the Department of Transportation.

Operations of the following routes are not affected: Calamba to Lucena (5:45 p.m.); Naga to Sipocot (3:30 p.m.); and Sipocot to Naga 5 p.m.).

The inspection train was clearing the tracks for obstruction to give way to the ensuing passenger train en route to Legazpi when the accident

happened around 2:50 a.m.

The driver of the tanker truck was taken to the Bicol Medical Center for treatment and is in stable condition.

The PNR train operator was not hurt.

Traffic along the affected area was back to normal as of posting time after a rerouting scheme  was implemented. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to practice the “stop, look and listen” safety principle, especially when crossing railroads, to avoid such accidents.

The Legazpi-Naga operations resumed Feb. 26 after a threemonth suspension. The route was

halted due to damage sustained by its train sets from weather disturbances in 2024. The 100-kilometer journey takes approximately 3 hours and 14 minutes.

The train stops at stations in Legazpi, Daraga, Travesia, Ligao, Polangui, Iriga, Pili, and Naga, with flag stops at Kapantawan, Washington Drive, Bagtang, Oas, Matacon, Bato, Lourdes (Old), and Baao.

Regular fares for the NagaLegazpi trip range from PHP20 to P155. Students, persons with disabilities and senior citizens who present valid identification pay 20-percent discounted fares.

BI NABS ALLEGED JAPANESE MEMBER OF ‘LUFFY’

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported the arrest of a Japanese woman suspected of being a member of the infamous “Luffy” gang, linked to theft and fraud in Japan.

In a press release on Saturday, Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the BI’s fugitive search unit (FSU) arrested 33-year-old Natsuki Kimura

along Ayala Avenue in Makati City on Friday, under a deportation order issued in March 2023. She is among several “Luffy” gang members arrested by the bureau since their presence here was reported by the Japanese government.

“She will be deported, blacklisted, and banned from re-entering the Philippines,” Viado said.

BI-FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy said Kimura is wanted in Japan for theft, accused of posing as a police officer to steal ATM cards.

She allegedly worked as a telephone operator for the syndicate’s international scams.

Kimura remains detained at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, awaiting deportation.

OF DISPOSABLE VAPES

CUSTOMS OPERATION YIELDS P1.18B

AN OPERATION conducted by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Customs Intelligence and Investigation ServicesManila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP) at a warehouse in Valenzuela City resulted in the seizure of an estimated P1.18 billion worth of allegedly smuggled disposable vapes, vape pods, and other products.

BOC Commissioner Bien Rubio stated that, in addition to disposable vapes and vape pods, the CIIS-MICP team also discovered ukay-ukay (used) clothing, handheld and desk fans, phone chargers, Chinese food items, wireless headsets, disposable syringes, office chairs, wall panels, and other assorted merchandise.

“We are observing many Filipinos, especially younger generations, shifting from traditional tobacco products to vapes. This market shift underscores the importance of border control measures, as we need to ensure that only safe, tested, and licensed vape products are available,” the Commissioner said.

“I would like to reiterate to our kababayans that using vape products, especially those that have not undergone regulatory testing and procedures, is dangerous. Smuggled vapes can pose significant health risks,” he added.

CIIS Director Verne Enciso reported that the seized vapes, used clothing, and counterfeit goods stored in the Valenzuela warehouse originated from China.

He specified that the total value of

the vape products was approximately P320,069,900, while the allegedly smuggled ukay-ukay and other general merchandise were valued at an estimated P860 million.

This brings the total value of the seized smuggled goods in the Valenzuela City warehouse to P1,180,069,900.

“During the inspection, we found various vape brands in the warehouse.

The P320 million valuation for the vape products alone includes the excise taxes that the government should have collected from their importation. Once again, our BOC personnel demonstrated exemplary resilience and dedication in preventing these products from entering the domestic market,” Director Enciso said.

The other seized products, including used clothing and branded phone chargers, were valued at P860 million.

Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence Group Juvymax Uy explained why consumers must understand the importance of boycotting smuggled and counterfeit products.

“Consumers are doubly victimized by counterfeit and smuggled products. First, they purchase products made of unsafe and substandard materials, which pose health risks. Second, smuggled products lack warranties and guarantees. Therefore, they are not only inferior to their original counterparts but also expose consumers to financial and health risks,” he said.

The CIIS-MICP has temporarily

placed padlocks and seals on the warehouse, and an inventory of the goods will be conducted by assigned Customs examiners at a scheduled time.

The examination of the goods will be witnessed by representatives from the CIIS, Enforcement and Security Service (ESS), and the warehouse.

The warehouse and shop owners may face charges for violating Section 117 (regulated importation and exportation) and Section 1400 (misdeclaration in

goods declaration) of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), in relation to Section 1113 (property subject to seizure and forfeiture). They may also face charges under Republic Act 8293, the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, Republic Act 10963, the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN Law), and the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) Board Resolution No. 079-2005 (amended rules and regulations governing the exportation and importation of leaf tobacco and tobacco products).

‘DOH SHOULD NOT BURDEN LGU ON HEALTH CENTERS’

ALYANSA Para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial candidate and Makati City Mayor Abby Binay said the Department of Health (DOH) should not impose additional burdens on local governments by constructing health centers but passing the responsibility for funding their operations to localities.

Binay said that while the national government focuses on building health infrastructure, it is left to the local governments to manage and fund these centers.

Coming from the perspective of a mayor, she said she understood why many LGUs are averse to Super Health Centers. “When a health center is built, the LGU will be the one to find a doctor, and nurse, and maintain the facility. Chances are, the municipality or LGU does not have that capacity.”

Binay called for a more consultative approach between the DOH and local governments.

According to Binay, the national government must ensure that the health needs of the people are addressed effectively, without compromising the financial stability of LGUs.

Binay also proposed a possible solution to the funding problem. She said that LGUs could form themselves into clusters and share in the costs of operating a super health center  strategically positioned to be accessible to all cluster members. Maricel V. Cruz

DFA CONDEMNS N. KOREA LATEST MISSILE LAUNCH

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launches.

“The Philippines voices grave concern and vehemently denounces the recent ballistic missile launches executed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the DFA in a statement said.

On March 10, news reports confirmed North Korea’s firing of multiple missiles from its western territory into the Yellow Sea, a reaction to joint military drills held by South Korea and the United States.

Manila warned Pyongyang that “these provocative acts jeopardize economic advancement, peace, and stability across the Korean Peninsula and the Indo-Pacific area.”

The DFA restated its appeal to the DPRK “to immediately halt these actions and comply with all international duties, including pertinent UN Security Council Resolutions, and to engage in peaceful and constructive discussions.”

DENR SET TO HOLD BIODIVERSITY PLAN IN PAG-ASA ISLAND

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is planning an integrated biodiversity research expedition to Recto Bank and Rizal Reef in April, following a similar project in Pag-asa Island earlier this year.

This initiative aims to further understand and protect the West Philippine Sea’s rich biodiversity, which is vital for the country’s fisheries and coral reefs but is increasingly threatened.

To enhance its research capabilities, the DENR will establish a marine scientific research station on Pag-asa Island, part of a network of eight stations across the Philippines. These stations will facilitate collaboration with international scientists from nations that respect international law, particularly in ocean science and maritime security.

The DENR highlighted its partnership with Australia in developing expertise in these areas. During a maritime security forum, Australia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Philippines in maritime security and protection. They emphasized the need for gender equality in the maritime domain, stressing that inclusive cooperation is crucial for addressing complex maritime challenges.

The forum also underscored the importance of collaboration with allies like Australia in safeguarding the Philippines’ sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.

PUTIN TELLS UKRAINE TROOPS IN RUSSIAN REGION TO ‘SURRENDER’

KYIV—President

Vladimir Putin called for beleaguered Ukrainian troops in the Russian region of Kursk to “surrender” as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Russian leader of seeking to sabotage a ceasefire initiative.

US President Donald Trump urged Putin to spare the lives of the Ukrainian troops as he said his envoy had held “productive” talks with Russia’s

leader on a proposed 30-day ceasefire.

Russia has mounted a rapid counteroffensive in the western border region of Kursk over the past week, recapturing much of the territory Ukraine seized in a shock incursion last August.

Defeat in Kursk would be a major blow to Ukraine’s plans to use its hold on the region as a bargaining chip in peace talks for the threeyear-old war.

“We are sympathetic to President Trump’s call,” Putin said in remarks broadcast on Russian television Friday.

“If they lay down their arms and surrender, they will be guaranteed life and dignified treatment,” Putin said.

Trump said “thousands” of Ukrainian troops were “completely surrounded by the Russian

STARSHIP TO LEAVE FOR MARS AT END OF 2026, SAYS MUSK

WASHINGTON— SpaceX founder Elon Musk said Saturday its massive Starship rocket would leave for Mars at the end of 2026 with Tesla humanoid robot Optimus onboard, adding that human landings could follow “as soon as 2029.”

“Starship departs for Mars at the end of next year, carrying Optimus. If those landings go well, then human landings may start as soon as 2029, although 2031 is more likely,” Musk said on his X social network.

Starship — the world’s largest and most powerful rocket — is key to Musk’s long-term vision of colonizing Mars.

NASA is also awaiting a modified version of Starship as a lunar lander for its Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon this decade.

But before SpaceX can carry out those missions, it must prove the vehicle is reliable, safe for crew, and capable of complex in-orbit refueling — critical for deep space missions.

SpaceX faced a setback this month when its latest test flight of the Starship prototype ended in a fiery explosion, even as the booster was successfully caught in its orbital test.

It was a near replay of the previous attempt.

Minutes after liftoff and booster separation, a live video feed showed the upper stage tumbling uncontrollably before the signal abruptly cut.

military, and in a very bad and vulnerable position.”

“I have strongly requested President Putin that their lives be spared. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II,” Trump said.

Ukraine’s military leadership denied the claims. “There is no threat of our units being encircled,” Ukraine’s General Staff posted on social media.

Zelensky gave a more sober assessment in comments to reporters in Kyiv. “The situation in the Kursk region is obviously very difficult,” he said, while insisting the campaign still had value. Russia, he said, had been forced to pull troops from other areas on the front line, easing pressure on Ukrainian forces fighting to keep control of the eastern logistics hub of Pokrovsk. AFP

STARMER: COALITION FOR UKRAINE CEASEFIRE

LONDON—UK premier Keir Starmer will prod fellow leaders Saturday to sign up to a coalition willing to protect any eventual ceasefire in Ukraine, having said Russian President Vladimir Putin was “not serious about peace.”

The British prime minister is expected to tell some 25 fellow leaders during a virtual summit that “now is the time for concrete commitments,” as Putin mulls a US proposal of a 30-day pause to the conflict.

“We can’t allow President Putin to play games with President Trump’s deal,” Starmer said in comments released by Downing Street late Friday, ahead of the call on Saturday morning.

“The Kremlin’s complete disregard for President Trump’s ceasefire proposal only serves to demonstrate that Putin is not serious about peace. “If Russia finally comes to the table, then we must be ready to monitor a ceasefire to ensure it is a serious, and enduring peace. If they don’t, then we need to strain every sinew to ramp up economic pressure on Russia to secure an end to this war,” he added. AFP

CUBA SUFFERS FOURTH NATIONWIDE BLACKOUT

HAVANA—Cuba suffered a general blackout on Friday caused by a crash of its national electricity grid, officials said, the fourth major power outage on the cash-strapped communist island in five months.

“At around 8:15 pm tonight, a breakdown... caused the significant loss of power in western Cuba and with it the fall of the national electricity system,” the Ministry of Energy and Mines said.

Writing on the social network X, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz said the government was “working tirelessly” to restore power.

Just before midnight, authorities said independent circuits were now supplying power to priority sectors such as hospitals in some provinces. In by now familiar scenes, the streets of Havana were plunged into darkness, forcing people to navigate by phone and flashlight.

US EXPELS S. AFRICA ENVOY WHO ‘HATES’ TRUMP

WASHINGTON—The US decision to expel South Africa’s ambassador was “regrettable,” the office of the South African president said Saturday, after Washington’s top diplomat accused the envoy of hating America and President Donald Trump.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, was “no longer welcome” in the United States.

Rasool is “a race-baiting politician who hates America and hates @ POTUS,” Rubio posted on X, referring to Trump by his White House X account handle.

“We have nothing to discuss with him and so he is considered PERSONA NON GRATA.” South Africa’s presidency said in a statement it had “noted the

regrettable expulsion” and urged “all relevant and impacted stakeholders to maintain the established diplomatic decorum in their engagement with the matter.”

“South Africa remains committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States of America,” the presidency said.

The expulsion of the ambassador — a very rare move by the United States — is the latest development in rising tensions between Washington and Pretoria.

Trump in February froze US aid to South Africa, citing a law in the country that he alleges allows land to be seized from white farmers.

Last week, Trump further fueled tensions, saying South Africa’s farmers were welcome to settle in the United

States after repeating his accusations that the government was “confiscating” land from white people.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that “any Farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to Citizenship.”

One of Trump’s closest allies is South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, who has accused South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government of having “openly racist ownership laws.”

Land ownership is a contentious issue in South Africa, with most farmland still owned by white people three decades after the end of apartheid and the government under pressure to implement reforms. AFP

AT LEAST 4 KILLED IN THAI CRANE COLLAPSE

BANGKOK—A crane collapsed at a construction site in Thailand’s capital on Saturday, killing at least four people, police said, as rescuers worked to retrieve a fifth body from the debris.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning on Rama II road, a major highway linking Bangkok to the country’s south.

At least four construction workers died at the site, where a tollway was under construction, and dozens were injured, police said.

“We have retrieved four bodies, but one remains trapped in the debris,” senior police official Sayam Boonsom told reporters at the scene, adding the fifth was presumed dead.

Among the four people killed, three were Thai nationals, he said. An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the collapse, Sayam added. AFP

FOR life partners

Denise Caranto and Tricia Epilepsia, food has always been an essential part of travel.

Whether exploring local flavors or international snack aisles, they found joy in discovering unique treats— something they felt was missing in the local market.

That insight sparked the creation of Konu in 2021, right in the midst of the pandemic.

Both avid snackers, Denise and Tricia spent hours browsing grocery aisles abroad, particularly in Japan, marveling at the variety of options. Meanwhile, the local market remained limited to biscuits, wafers, and cookies.

“We wanted to bring that same excitement here, but importing was too costly for a small business like ours,” Caranto said.

At that time, both founders were still working corporate jobs; thus, importing high-minimum-order products wasn’t feasible. Instead, they sought a snack format they could produce themselves from their own kitchen.

A FRESH TAKE ON SNACKING

Inspired by international finds, both co-owners agreed to launch a chocolatefilled cone snack. The goal was to introduce something different yet familiar— exciting enough to spark curiosity while remaining accessible. Over time, they expanded to a ready-to-eat chocolateglazed cereal snack, that went viral on line.

The pandemic provided the perfect opportunity to experiment. While others turned to gardening, Epilepisa and Caranto, were busy perfecting chocolate recipes.

Konu’s breakthrough came through TikTok. The platform’s affiliate selling system allowed users to promote and sell their products, generating massive

PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) is strengthening female representation in aviation with its “Fly With Her” Program, a scholarship initiative in partnership with the PAL Foundation.

The program provides financial aid to aspiring Filipina pilots, reinforcing PAL’s long-standing advocacy for gender equity in the industry.

Since 1989, PAL has pioneered female leadership in aviation, with Aimee Carandang-Gloria becoming Southeast Asia’s first female commercial airline pilot.

Today, PAL employs over 80 female pilots, making up 9 percent of its workforce—surpassing the global average of 6 percent.

PAL has earmarked P10 million for the program, awarding P2.5 million each to four female cadet pilots. The funds, managed by the PAL Foundation, will be directly allocated to PAL’s partner aviation school to partially cover tuition.

The criteria for female cadet pilot candidates include financial need, an undergraduate degree (preferably in STEM), English proficiency, physical fitness, enrollment in PAL’s partner aviation school, completion of training within 12 months, and a commitment to serve with PAL posttraining under specified conditions.

organic reach without costly endorsements.

“We launched during the mukbang trend, and people were eager to showcase our snacks,” they recalled. Viral videos racked up millions of views, skyrocketing brand awareness.

But virality came with challenges. “Overnight, our demand shot up 1,000 timwes. We had to scale fast— expanding from a five-person team to 20 in days, then to 80 employees,” Epilepsia said.

To keep up, they expanded to a 600-squaremeter production facility in Pasig, investing

in machines to automate their production for improved efficiency.

STAYING AHEAD IN A FAST-PACED MARKET

While expanding, the couple realized that staying relevant is important to keep up with trends.

“TikTok trends shift fast. If you go viral today, you could be forgotten tomorrow. You always need to be two steps ahead— whether through new campaigns, fresh content, or innovative products. I believe it isn’t exclusive to TikTok platform alone. But, in businesses in general, there’s a constant struggle to remain relevant,” Caranto noted. Live selling became another crucial strategy. Initially hesitant, they quickly saw its impact. “Before, we only did prerecorded videos. Now, live selling runs 24/7, keeping us engaged with customers,” Epilepsia shared.

LOOKING AHEAD:

INNOVATION AND GROWTH

As Konu continues to expand, the team is focused on launching new snack formats that are both crave-worthy and visually exciting.

“We have several products in the pipeline for Q1 and Q2 this year. We want to recreate our success while ensuring customers genuinely enjoy our snacks,” both said. Their continuing story is filled with milestones, but one moment stands out. A viral TikTok video started from a simple customer comment:

“A buyer said, ‘This is so good. Whoever invented this product, I hope you live a long life!’ That became our first viral clip. Since then, people keep telling us how much they love our snacks and how Konu has changed their lives,” Caranto recalled.

“We found out recently that some of our resellers used their earnings, partly from Konu and other products, to graduate from college. Knowing our business is making a difference—it’s incredibly heartwarming,” Epilepsia said.

Seeing how their products impact people’s lives inspires Epilepsia and Caranto to stay driven and innovative.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF METRO MANILA’S MISSING LUXURY CAR TAXES

THE sudden appearance, and equally swift disappearance, of news regarding seized luxury cars in Metro Manila showrooms has left many scratching their heads. One moment, headlines scream of raids and tax evasion; the next, a deafening silence. This vanishing act is a familiar script in the ongoing saga of illegally imported high-end vehicles, a tale that bleeds the government of untold millions.

The allure of nine-figure price tags has transformed luxury car importation into a lucrative, albeit illicit, enterprise. Shady importers, hand-in-glove with equally dubious Bureau of Customs personnel, orchestrate a system where exorbitant taxes—sometimes matching the car’s value—are conveniently sidestepped. The result?

A steady stream of opulent vehicles bypassing the legal channels, leaving a gaping hole in the nation’s coffers.

The pattern is predictable: a dramatic raid, a flurry of media attention, and then… nothing. The perpetrators remain shrouded in anonymity, the fate of the seized vehicles a mystery. Did they get confiscated? Were the proper taxes eventually paid? The public is left to speculate, while the cycle of illegality continues.

There was that one memorable spectacle, a wrecking ball crushing illegally imported cars under the orders of Malacañang. A powerful image, certainly, but a singular event in a sea of unchecked smuggling. How many more cars slip through the cracks, their origins and tax status forever obscured?

The authorities bear a responsibility to provide transparency. We demand accountability for drug mules, rightly imprisoned for their crimes. Why then, do those who defraud the government of millions in taxes remain untouchable? These illegal car importers, like any other criminals, deserve their day in court. They should be identified, their actions exposed, and justice served.

The persistent anonymity of these offenders breeds suspicion. Are they protected by powerful connections? Do well-placed bribes silence investigations? Whatever the reason, the result is the same: a system where the wealthy can flaunt their ill-gotten gains with impunity, a stark reminder of a system in dire need of reform.

PETS

SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS AND CANINE CANCER

CANCER is one of the leading causes of death in dogs, with diagnosis ranging from lymphoma to mast cell tumors. A recent trend in pet care among owners is the use of natural ways to support a dogs’ health alongside conventional treatments. Once such natural way is giving shiitake mushrooms to dogs.

Shiitake has gained attention for their potential cancer-fighting properties. These mushrooms contain bioactive compounds that support immune function and overall well-being in dogs battling cancer.

What Makes Shiitake Mushrooms Special?

Shiitake mushrooms have long been studied for their health benefits in humans, and recent research suggests they may also benefit dogs.

According to Dr. Allan Morton in “Shiitake Mushrooms for Dogs” published in the All About Pets website, the primary compounds in shiitake mushrooms that may contribute to their medicinal effects include:

1. Lentinan – A polysaccharide that enhances immune function and may have anti-tumor properties.

2. Beta-Glucans – These polysaccharides help regulate immune response, reducing inflammation and stimulating white blood cell activity.

3. Ergothioneine – A potent antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

4. Sterols – Naturally occurring compounds that may help regulate cholesterol and support overall cellular health.

5. B Vitamins – Essential for metabolic and immune system support.

Potential Benefits

Dr. Morton explains that the use of shiitake mushroom in dogs offer numerous benefits in canine care. These benefits derive from its natural components.

1. Immune System Support

Lentinan, a key compound in shiitake mush-

rooms, has been found to boost the immune response. Studies suggest that lentinan may enhance the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages, which play a critical role in identifying and destroying cancerous cells.

2. Anti-Tumor Properties

Beta-glucans in shiitake mushrooms have demonstrated anti-tumor effects in several studies. These compounds work by modulating the immune system, making it more effective at targeting and eliminating cancer cells. While more research is needed specifically on dogs, preliminary studies in other animals suggest promising results.

3. Reduced Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is linked to the progression of many types of cancer. Shiitake mushrooms contain anti-inflammatory compounds that may help reduce systemic inflammation, potentially slowing tumor growth and improving overall comfort.

4. Antioxidant Effects

Cancer development is often associated with oxidative stress, where harmful free radicals damage cells and DNA. The antioxidants found in shiitake mushrooms, such as ergothioneine, help neutralize these free radicals and protect healthy cells from damage.

5. Enhanced Gut Health

A healthy gut is important for a strong immune system. Shiitake mushrooms act as prebiotics, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn supports immune function and helps regulate inflammatory responses.

Considerations and Precautions

While shiitake mushrooms offer many potential benefits, there are important considerations before adding them to your dog’s diet.

1. Proper Dosage

The appropriate dosage of shiitake mushrooms for dogs depends on their size, overall health, and existing conditions. It is best to consult a veterinarian before introducing shiitake mushrooms to a dog with cancer.

2. Form of Consumption

Shiitake mushrooms should be given in a safe, prepared form. Raw shiitake mushrooms contain lentinan, which can be difficult to digest and may cause gastrointestinal upset. Cooking the mushrooms or using powdered extract ensures better absorption and minimizes digestive issues.

3. Potential Allergic Reactions

Some dogs may be allergic to mushrooms. Introduce gradually and watch for symptoms such as itching, vomiting, diarrhea, or other signs of intolerance.

4. Interaction with Medications

If your dog is undergoing chemotherapy or taking other medications, consult your vet to ensure that shiitake mushrooms will not interfere with their treatment.

How to Incorporate in Your Dog’s Diet

If your veterinarian approves, you can introduce shiitake mushrooms to your dog’s diet in several ways:

1. Cooked Mushrooms – Lightly cook shiitake mushrooms in water or bone broth and add them to your dog’s food.

2. Powdered Supplements – Shiitake mushroom powders or extracts formulated for pets can be mixed into meals.

3. Broth – Simmering shiitake mushrooms in water and using the broth as a food topper can be an easy way to deliver beneficial compounds.

UNDERSTANDING CONSTIPATION IN PETS

CONSTIPATION in pets is a common issue that affects many animals, particularly dogs and cats. It is characterized by infrequent or difficult bowel movements, which can lead to discomfort and health complications if left untreated. Various factors contribute to constipation, and understanding these causes is essential for effective management. Moreover, several treatment options are available to alleviate this condition.

Causes of Constipation in Pets

Diet and Nutrition

One of the primary causes of constipation in pets is related to their diet. Insufficient fiber intake can lead to hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass. According to Purina’s article on dog constipation, “Dog Constipation: Everything You Need to Know,” a diet lacking adequate fiber can significantly impact a dog's digestive health. Pets that consume predominantly dry food may be at a higher risk, as these diets generally contain less moisture than wet food. Additionally, abrupt changes in diet can also disrupt normal bowel function, contributing to constipation. Dehydration Dehydration is another significant factor that can lead to constipation in pets. When pets do not drink enough water, their bodies absorb more moisture from the waste in their intestines, resulting in harder stools. As highlighted by the article on cat constipation from PetMD, “How To Treat Constipation in Cats,” ensuring that pets have constant access to fresh water is crucial for maintaining healthy digestion.

Lack of Exercise

Physical activity plays a vital role in promoting regular bowel movements in pets. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to decreased intestinal motility, making it more challenging for pets to pass stool. Veterinary Partner, in their article “Constipation and Megacolon in Dogs

and Cats,” emphasizes that regular exercise is essential for maintaining gastrointestinal health, especially in dogs and cats that are prone to obesity.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions can also lead to constipation. For instance, conditions such as hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and neurological disorders may affect the normal functioning of the digestive system. As noted in the Veterinary Partner article, medications used to treat other health issues can also have side effects that contribute to constipation. For example, some pain medications and antacids may slow down gastrointestinal motility.

Stress and Behavioral Issues

Stress can significantly impact a pet’s digestive health. Changes in the environment, such as moving to a new home or the introduction of a new pet, can induce stress and lead to constipation. Additionally, behavioral issues such as anxiety or fear can cause pets to avoid using the litter box or going outside, resulting in retained stool.

Symptoms of Constipation

in Pets

Recognizing the symptoms of constipation is crucial for timely intervention. Common signs include:

• Straining to defecate

• Passing small, hard stools

• Infrequent bowel movements

• Abdominal discomfort or bloating

• Loss of appetite

• Lethargy

If a pet exhibits these symptoms, it is essential to consult a veterinarian for further evaluation and treatment.

Treatment Options for Constipation in Pets

Dietary Modifications

One of the first steps in treating constipation in pets

is to modify their diet. Increasing fiber intake can help

soften stools and promote regular bowel movements.

According to Purina, pet owners may consider incorporating high-fiber foods or supplements into their pets' diets. For dogs, canned pumpkin, green beans, and certain commercial dog foods designed for digestive health can be beneficial. Similarly, for cats, adding fiber-rich wet food or special fiber supplements can aid in easing constipation.

Hydration

Ensuring that pets are adequately hydrated is essential for preventing and treating constipation. Providing fresh water at all times and encouraging pets to drink more can help maintain proper hydration levels. Additionally, offering wet food can increase moisture intake, which can be particularly beneficial for both dogs and cats.

Exercise

Encouraging regular exercise is another effective way to combat constipation. Regular walks for dogs and playtime for cats can stimulate intestinal motility and promote healthy digestion. Veterinary Partner emphasizes the importance of physical activity in maintaining overall health, including digestive health.

Laxatives and Stool Softeners

In some cases, veterinarians may recommend laxatives or stool softeners to alleviate constipation. These medications work by increasing the water content in the stool or stimulating bowel movements. However, such treatments should only be administered under veterinary supervision to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Enemas

For severe cases of constipation, veterinarians may perform an enema to relieve the condition. An enema can help to soften and flush out impacted stool from the rectum. This procedure should only be performed by a qualified professional, as improper administration can lead to complications.

Veterinary Care

If constipation persists despite home treatment efforts, it may be necessary to seek veterinary care. The veterinarian can perform a thorough examination, potentially including diagnostic imaging, to determine the underlying cause of constipation. Addressing any underlying medical conditions is crucial for effective treatment and preventing recurrence.

Prevention Strategies

Preventing constipation in pets involves several proactive strategies, including:

• Balanced Diet: Providing a well-balanced diet rich in fiber can help maintain healthy digestion.

• Hydration: Ensuring constant access to fresh water encourages adequate hydration.

• Regular Exercise: Engaging pets in regular physical activity stimulates bowel function.

• Routine Check-ups: Regular veterinary visits can help detect and address any health issues early. By implementing these strategies, pet owners can help reduce the risk of constipation and promote overall digestive health.

Constipation in pets is a manageable condition. Recognizing the symptoms early and implementing appropriate treatment strategies is essential for alleviating the condition. In cases where home remedies are insufficient, veterinary care should be sought to ensure the well-being of the pet. Through proactive measures, pet owners can

Fcouple Kyosu Guinto and Jaja Disuanco , now an onscreen love team, are rekindling their partnership—this time, not as lovers, but as co-stars in the romantic-comedy film Un-Ex You , which stars real-life couple Kim Molina and Jerald Napoles.

During the film’s press conference, the two addressed the inevitable question: can exes really be friends?

SHOWBIZ

“For me, it depends on the history you shared and how the relationship ended. If there was no cheating or unsolvable conflict, I think there’s a chance to remain friends,” Kyosu told Manila Standard Entertainment Jaja, echoing Kyosu’s sentiments, shared that their breakup stemmed from personal pressures rather than betrayal.

“We talked about it after we made amend. He told me the breakup happened because he felt pressured—not because of friends, but because he thought he couldn’t match what I was giving him. There was no cheating,” answered Jaja.

The pair first rose to fame and went viral after appearing in the “EXpecially For You” segment of the noontime show It’s Showtime in 2023. The segment took an unexpected turn when Kyosu confessed he still had feelings for his ex — a sentiment Jaja admitted she shared. The emotional twist resonated with viewers and catapulted them into the spotlight.

They revealed that their breakup was not due to infidelity but because Kyosu struggled to keep up with Jaja’s more comfortable lifestyle.

Now, as they step into the world of acting, the ex-couple admitted that working together again has strengthened their bond, albeit in a different way.

“We didn’t spend much time together before because my parents were strict. Now, during shoot days, we get to talk and bond more,” Jajaj shared.

Their experience filming Un-Ex You was a milestone for both, as it marked their movie debut.

“At first, I was really nervous since it was our first time doing a movie together. It’s a huge achievement for me because it was just a dream before—and now it has come true. I can honestly say Jaja was amazing. You’ll see a different side of her in the movie compared to how she is in real life,” Kyoau stated.

Jaja also opened up about the challenges she faced during the shoot.

“I had to adjust a lot in the beginning. Thankfully, Miss Candy [Pangilinan]and Kuya Je were there during our first scene. I was so nervous—my heart was racing—especially since I was working

admitted Jaja.

They also credited their co-stars, Kim and Jerald, for helping them adjust to their new dynamic.

“I learned a lot from Kuya Je and Ate Kim. In acting, they taught me not to be too nervous, just be yourself, and show who you really are,” Kyosu shared.

Jaja added that the couple also gave them valuable relationship advice.

“They told us to always communicate, that’s the key. You need to maintain the love by keeping the communication strong,” she said.

When asked if there’s a possibility of reconciling romantically, both emphasized that they would want to focus on their careers first.

“We’re focusing on our careers right now,” Jaja said firmly.

Kyosu echoed, saying,

“We’re not really thinking about getting back together. Our focus is more on our careers right now.”

Un-Ex You revolves around Zuri and Andy in a heartfelt story of love and second chances.

FOR some, love is sweeter the second time around. But for former beauty queen and actress Ruffa Gutierrez, when her former husband, Turkish businessman Yilmaz Bektas, “proposed” to her again, she turned him down.

In an interview during her contract signing with Luxe Skin as its newest ambassador, Ruffa shared her initial reaction to the unexpected proposal, saying she thought it was a joke.

“I said, ‘Is this a joke?’ He said, ‘No, I want to invite you to be [on] a train with me and train all over Europe. So, I said, ‘Is this true, or maybe he’s planning my murder on the plane or train?’,” she quipped. Despite the offer, Ruffa declined. Yilmaz then told her that he would visit her in the Philippines instead.

“I told him, ‘Okay, you’re welcome to visit in the Philippines.’ But make sure your children are here,’” said Ruffa and Yilmaz were married in 2003 but separated in 2007. They share two daughters, Lorin and , who recently reconnected with their father during a visit to

The actress expressed joy over her daughters finally forming a personal bond with their dad.

“I’m very happy that they are more at ease. It’s like the pain I saw in their hearts for so many years, is already gone,” she continued. She also noted that her relationship with her former husband has improved over time.

“Yilmaz and I are fine too, sometimes we joke around. He also now sends [money as financial support], you know, so we are all happy. Yes, communication is regular,” added Ruffa. Ruffa continues to co-parent with Yilmaz while focusing on her career and family.

STUDENTS DEVELOP VIDEO GAME ON JEEPNEY DRIVERS’ CHALLENGES

AGROUP of young developers has created a 3D video game that explores the impact of the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) on jeepney drivers and their families.

Developed by Iyanla Bagasan, Eriond De Jesus, Marcus Florentino, MJ Lenomta, and Charlotte Timbreza under the mentorship of thesis adviser Ian Christian Sevilla, the game titled Para Po! provides an interactive look at the daily struggles of jeepney drivers navigating urban traffic while facing the looming phaseout of traditional jeepneys.

The PUVMP, which aims to replace jeepneys and other public utility vehicles (PUVs) over 15 years old, has drawn criticism from operators and drivers who cite financial difficulties in meeting the program’s requirements. The developers acknowledged the initiative’s benefits but pointed out concerns over its implementation, particularly the cost and timeline.

“Jeepneys have long been part of the daily transport system, livelihood, and cultural identity of Filipinos,” the team stated. “Yet

drivers, who earn around P400 a day, are now being asked to purchase a P2.8 million minibus and join a cooperative, which could take 19 years to pay off.” They added that the short transition period forces many drivers to align with large corporations, leaving independent operators at a disadvantage The game, developed under De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Game Design and Development Program, combines strategy and simulation to encourage players to experience the complexities of the phaseout firsthand. It was produced using Unreal Engine for Windows PC.

Filipino winners have made significant contributions to innovation. Notable inventions include Joseph Aristotle De Leon ’s RAMUN, an underground monitoring system for addressing flooding and groundwater issues, Jeremy De Leon ’s Make-roscope, a portable microscope for students, Carvey Maigue ’s AuREUS, a sustainable energy solution, and the ecofriendly prosthesis Brakong, developed by Emmanuelle Pangilinan and Jason Pechardo.

Para Po! was recognized as the Best Capstone project of the group’s graduating batch and won the Best Innovation Award at the Philippine Creative Awards: Game On 2024. It was also nominated for Game of the Year and Best Desktop/Console Game in the school category.

Mark Breitbard, president and CEO of Gap, said the campaign aims to connect with consumers through comfort and confidence. “Our Spring collection with softer-thanever essentials is designed to empower you to move freely and authentically,” he said. “True style starts with feeling good in what you wear.” Posey said her involvement in the campaign reminded her of the early days of dancing and dressing freely. “I was inspired to see the next generation keeping that spirit alive—it was cool and optimistic,” she said.

Gap’s Spring 2025 campaign launches globally in March, with the featured styles available in stores and online.

Shortlisted entries will be evaluated based on functionality, design process, differentiation, and commercial viability. National Winners, each receiving P361,300, will be announced on Sept. 10. HOTELS MUST ADAPT TO GEN Z TRAVEL HABITS FOR FUTURE GROWTH—AGODA

HOTELS across Asia must adjust to the preferences of Gen Z travelers to remain competitive, according to Agoda, the digital travel platform, citing research on the generation’s travel habits.

The study identified Gen Z travelers, aged 18 to 27, as digital-first consumers who favor spontaneity and shared experiences.

The study also shows Gen Z growing influence is shaping the industry, with their spending power expected to rise significantly, reaching $12 trillion by 2030, according to a Neilsen report.

“It’s hard to understate the importance of Gen Z in determining the future of travel,” said Andrew Smith, senior vice president of supply at Agoda. “They prioritize unique experiences and social media-friendly destinations, making it essential for hotels to adjust their marketing strategies.”

Hotels can attract Gen Z travelers by creating visually appealing spaces for social media content, incorporating live events such as concerts and festivals into promotions, and offering themed experiences tied to popular culture, Agoda said. Engaging with influencers and leveraging TikTok trends can also boost visibility among younger travelers.

The research found that Gen Z travelers are turning to TikTok (20 percent) and Instagram (14 percent) for travel inspiration, with personal recommendations still playing a significant role at 17 percent.

Gen Z also exhibits a preference for lastminute bookings, with 20 percent reserving

flights less than a week in advance and one in four making spontaneous accommodation bookings.

They favor traveling with a partner, with 38 percent preferring joint trips, though group and family travel remain popular. Budget-conscious, Gen Z travelers tend to keep accommodation

costs under $50 per night per person,

Agoda said.

Despite generational differences in how trips are planned and booked, the desire to travel remains strong across age groups, with nearly half of both Gen Z and Millennials planning one to three trips this year, the study found.

The hotel’s dining options are superb. Each meal is a feast for the eyes and the tummy. Our favorite was having a meal by the beach at the Reef Bar. Sumptuous food with views of the sea makes one appreciate
