“Deterrence is necessary around the world, but specifically in this region, in your country, considering the threats from the Communist Chinese,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth said the US will deploy “advanced capabilities” in the Philippines for this year's Balikatan Exercises, including a Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) and highly capable unmanned surface vessels.

“Friends need to stand shoulder to shoulder to deter conflict to ensure that there’s free navigation. Whether you call it the South China Sea or the West Philippine Sea, we recognize that your country has stood very firm in that location and in defense of your nation,” Hegseth said.

“Peace through strength is a very real thing,” he added.

“Another round of oil price increases is expected to happen next week. Estimated adjustments of the following products based on the 4-day trading in MOPS (Mean of Platts Singapore) are as follows: Gasoline - increase of P0.85 to P1.35 [per liter], diesel - increase of P0.75 to P1.25 and kerosene - increase of P0.95 to P1.10,” DOE Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) director Rodela Romero said. She explained that the looming increase was driven by the imposition of US sanctions on Iran, which could remove 1 million barrels per day from global supply; continuing attacks between Russia, Ukraine on energy installations; and the US threat of tariffs on nations buying Venezuelan crude oil.

Jetti Petroleum president Leo Bellas echoed DOE’s sentiment of another oil price hike next week.

for his part, said Hegseth's visit was a strong signal of the two countries' commitment to maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

"Your visit to the region, and especially the fact that you have come to the Philippines as your first stop, sends a very strong message of the commitment of both our countries to continue to work together," Mr. Marcos said.

“You are our only treaty partner and continue to be the supporter for peace in this part of the world...We have always understood the principle that the greatest force for peace in this part of the world would be the United States. And that is why it is very important,” the President added.

Hegseth responded by emphasizing Washington's dedication to its alliance with Manila.

"I had a chance to speak just a few minutes ago to our president, President [Donald] Trump, who sends his regards to you as well, thinks very fondly of this great country, is very committed to the alliance that we have, to the friendship that we have, the cooperation

ernment units of Metro Manila to remove these illegal campaign materials," he stated.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) went on heightened security alert status at the start of the election campaign for local candidates.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said that the PNP chief has ordered all regional offices to monitor their areas of responsibility to prevent criminal activities and respond to untoward incidents.

“The instruction of our PNP chief is to ensure that we maintain and maintain police visibility in areas of engagement, including the area security that we will deploy during campaign sorties of our local candidates as well as our national candidates,” she said.

Fajardo also said that the PNP canceled the leaves of police officers and required them to report to their respective offices for possible deployment in areas.

“It means at least 75 percent of the total strength of PNP must be readily available for deployment,” she explained.

For its part, Malacañang reminded local candidates to abide by election laws as the campaign period gets underway.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro urged candidates to lead by example and uphold the law throughout the campaign season.

He said world oil prices have spiked during the week due to supply and trade war risk concerns.

The oil executive noted that the latest Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies’ (OPEC+) output plan, which will require seven member nations to make further oil output cuts to compensate for their past overproduction, could overtake the production hikes the group plans to introduce next month.

He said another factor contributing to higher fuel prices is the healthy demand in the US, as crude and fuel inventories fell more than expected.

Bellas said this overshadowed the adverse effects of the wider trade war on the world’s economy and demand for oil.

The 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, the longest-running defense pact, aims to step up the defense and security cooperation between Philippine and US troops.

In a separate press conference with Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., Hegseth said both countries would accelerate upgrades to their capabilities and logistical support infrastructure to strengthen deterrence efforts.

“We can talk about big systems and advanced technologies. But if you don't have logistics support, I see the folks who run militaries and run formations, you need logistics support to actually operate and advance forward,” Hegseth said.

“We will enhance our current EDCA locations and we will make improvements. Mind you, these are

The proposed zero remittance day is a form of protest where OFWs would withhold sending money to the Philippines to express dissatisfaction over government policies.

We will enhance them for logistical support...We have talked about establishing a sustainable, effective, and business case-focused defense industrial base which suits our national interests and advances our economic, defense, and other cooperative resilience activities,” Teodoro added.

Both Defense chiefs rejected the statement of Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun cautioned the Philippines against serving foreign agendas, likening it to "opening the door to a predator."

“I think that characterizing people who do not appropriate parts of the South China Sea as their own, as they do the 10-dash line, speaks loudly of themselves rather than others. That's once again a product of a limited world view of a closed society. We don't practice propaganda in this country. We practice free speech and democracy. So the Philippines is not a mouthpiece, unlike they themselves who are mouthpieces of the Xi Jinping thought,” Teodoro said.

“We don't seek intervention. [Pres-

"When they see me, they usually think about how we can help them with scholarships or bring them home if needed... Our conversations often turn light-hearted, and many OFWs see us as friends because of the years we've spent working together," Ignacio said.

“All we seek is peace. All we seek is freedom and cooperation and mutual benefit, and we find that in friends like our friends in the Philippines. But do not mistake our friendship. Do not mistake our belief in peace and our desire for peace for a lack of resolve. Too many have, and America still stands strong today and will continue to be,” the US Defense chief added.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez, for his part, said Hegseth's visit was a reaffirmation of the “deep, historic, and forward-looking alliance” between the two countries.

“The high-level discussions between Secretary Hegseth and Philippine officials reflect a unified vision: to fortify our defense cooperation and preserve the principles of freedom of navigation and respect for international norms,” Romualdez said. With AFP

19-year-old Eala bowing out in the semifinals of the women’s singles after a hard-fought three-set battle that lasted two hours and 26 minutes. Pegula advanced to the finals, where she will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday.

Eala, ranked No. 140 in the world, captivated tennis fans with a stunning performance throughout the tournament, scoring impressive wins over three Grand Slam champions: 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko, reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, and former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

"I literally gave everything I had. I'm like a mummy. I did everything and I have no regrets," Eala said after ending her Miami Open in fighting fashion.

Her fearless play and determination did not go unnoticed. Even Pegula, a seasoned competitor, acknowledged Eala’s grit and talent.

“Yeah, I mean, she’s really good. A really good tennis player. She goes for her shots, takes it all early, and she competes really well,” Pegula said.

“She’s beaten a lot of top players this week. I don’t think she needs to be told that she’s a great player.”

tiebreaker after overcoming Pegula’s initial 5-2 lead. However, Pegula held firm, forcing Eala into a series of forehand errors to clinch the opener.

Eala struck back in the second set, engaging Pegula in a battle of breaks before securing a 7-5 victory to level the match. The crowd erupted as Eala’s precision and perseverance forced a decider.

In her message, the Vice President called on loyalists and supporters to pray for her father’s safe return to the Philippines and his strength and good health.

In the third set, Eala held her own, staying toe-to-toe with Pegula until a crucial break at 3-all tilted the momentum. Pegula then surged ahead, closing out the match after capitalizing on a forehand error from Eala in the ninth game.

Pegula, 31, acknowledged that the world will be seeing more of Eala in the future.

“We’re not going to see enough of her yet. But we are. And she’s proven herself tonight,” Pegula said. Meanwhile, Sabalenka, a threetime Grand Slam champion, will look to bounce back in the Miami Open finals after falling to Mirra Andreeva in the Indian Wells final earlier this month. The Belarusian secured her place in the championship match with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over sixth seed Jasmine Paolini.

For Eala, this Miami Open journey has been remarkable, cementing her as a rising star in women’s tennis.

“I hope you will continue your support and love for our former president until the upcoming elections for our senators,” she said while pitching for the opposition senatorial slate.

“In your courage, support, and prayers, we rely and hope that we may achieve justice for Rodrigo Duterte, for the Filipino people, and for our nation, the Philippines,” she added.

Duterte’s eldest daughter has been in the Dutch city for over two weeks helping assemble his legal team.

For her part, Veronica, who earlier witnessed her father’s arrest, shared a heartfelt message, highlighting his strong leadership and unwavering commitment to public service.

“A man of very few words, but the most actions. My father has always been a force to be reckoned with. Even in his sunset days, he poses the biggest threat because of his bold heroism and patriotism,” she said.

Bellas said price movement indication for the week of March 31, based on this week’s MOPS and foreign average (first 4 days) versus last week’s full week average, showed a possible increase of P0.80 to P1 per liter in diesel and P1 to P1.20 per li-

Speaker calls for Lakas-CMD unity going to May 12 elections

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Friday officially kicked off his re-election campaign as representative of Leyte’s 1st District with a call for unity among allies and fellow candidates of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats and a prayer for a clean and victorious campaign season.

“To all our fellow candidates in the LakasCMD, partymates, allies and partners in service, the time has come to show the people again the kind of loyal leadership, tried and with a heart. Service marches on. May God bless our campaign,” he said.

Romualdez is president of Lakas-CMD, the

country’s dominant majority party in the midterm elections in May. He ran for re-election unopposed, assured his constituents that he would continue to serve Leyte with the same dedication that has defined his years in public service, but with even greater effort and improved programs in

the years ahead. At the same time, he rallied his fellow LakasCMD candidates across the country to bring their message of service and performance to every Filipino community, saying their shared mission goes beyond political victory.

“Our campaign is proven not with words but with action. Our projects were felt in every barangay, every community, every family,” he added.

“Ito ang bunga ng paninindigan at tapat na pamumuno – ‘yung ginagawa ang tama dahil ito ang kailangan ng mga tao, This is the fruit of our commitment for true ledership, doing the right thing because it is what the people need” Romualdez said.

New survey says Rody allies lead senatorial derby

ALLIES of former President Rodrigo Duterte dominate the latest Senate race rankings as voter sentiment shifts due to dissatisfaction with the national leadership, according to the PAHAYAG 2025 First Quarter Survey (PQ1-2025).

Conducted March 15-20, the survey took place shortly after Duterte’s arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, a development that may have further influenced voter preferences.

If the elections were held today, the projected top 12 would consist of six candidates from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas (ABP), three from Duterte’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP), two from the Liberal Party/Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino, and one independent candidate—highlighting a fragmented yet competitive race.

Candidates from Duterte’s PDP dominated the top spots, with Senator Christoper Go leading at 45 percent, followed by Senator Ronald Dela Rosa at 35 percent. Meanwhile, independent candidates former senators Bam Aquino and Panfilo Lacson tied for third and fourth place with 33 percent, while Francis Pangilinan trailed closely at 32 percent.

For the administration-backed ABP slate, former frontrunner Erwin Tulfo dropped to sixth place, tying with former Senate President Vicente Sotto at 29 percent. They were followed by Pia Cayetano (27 percent) and Francis Tolentino (23 percent).

LET THE CAMPAIGNS BEGIN. NIC approves formation of TWD to evaluate AI use

NATIONAL Innovation Council (NIC) has given the green light for the formation of a technical working group that will assess the capabilities, current ecosystem, and future trajectories of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

In a press statement, the NIC stamped its mark of approval to the initiative during its eighth council meeting on March 26.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said the think tank will

conduct comprehensive studies on the country’s AI preparedness and eventual adoption.

This initiative, NEDA said, aims to inform the government’s formulation of AI policies.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will lead the group, which will include experts from industry, academe, and government.

NEDA Secretary and NIC vice chairman

Arsenio Balisacan underscored the importance of a coordinated approach to AI, particularly

how such technologies can be contextualized within the Philippine setting.

“If we want to harness the potential of AI, we urgently need a national approach and policy that will ensure alignment and collaboration between public and private sector efforts,” Balisacan said. “More importantly, we must ensure that the Filipino workforce is adequately prepared to upskill and transition efficiently to these AI developments,” he added.

Escudero confident on Sorsogon’s economic dev’t

SENATE President Francis Escudero on Friday expressed confidence that Sorsogon will remain one of the fastest-growing provinces in the Bicol Region with the election of local officials aligned with his vision.

“I am confident that by electing the candidates with us today, we will continue the progress of our beloved province and provide the services our people expect,” he during the proclamation of local candidates in Sorsogon signalling the start of the campaign season.

“Sorsoganons come first in progress. Sorsoganons come first in crafting meaningful policies for the benefit of our fellow citizens. Sorsoganons come first in offering help and care to every Sorsoganon family,” Escudero said.

Escudero, a former governor of Sorsogon, said the officials he endorsed have proven track records and will prioritize the province’s development.

He personally backed the re-election bids of Gov. Edwin Hamor, Vice Gov. Krunimar Antonio Escudero II, 1st District Rep. Marie Bernadette Escudero, and 2nd District Rep. Wowo Fortes.

“The polls have been conducted peacefully here in Sorsogon compared to other provinces in the Bicol Region. But I also hope to see this happen in other provinces, not just here,” Escudero said.

He emphasized the importance of unity among local politicians as the campaign season intensifies, and called for an end to political intrigue, urging candidates to focus on their platforms and public service goals.

“Things should be clear now, dictated not only by delicadeza but also by integrity, so that from this day forward, there will be no more jealousy, backstabbing, or intrigue,” Escudero stressed.

THE Department of Agriculture has implemented a temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds, as well as their products, from Turkey following an outbreak of bird flu among domestic birds in the European country.

Green card a privilege, not a right envoy

DESPITE holding US green cards, Filipinos remain at risk of losing their status, particularly under the hardline immigration policies under the Trump administration, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez said. Romualdez said a green card is a privilege, not a right, and can be revoked under certain conditions.

“Even if you are a green card holder, as explained by the State Department, it’s a privilege granted to you. It allows you to live permanently in the United States, but it can still be revoked,” Romualdez told GMA News.

According to a 2021 data from the Migration Policy Institute, the Philippines was the fourth-largest source of new US permanent residents, with around 27,500 Filipinos—roughly 4 percent of the 740,000 new lawful permanent residents (LPRs)—obtaining green cards, mostly through family reunification.

Earlier, Romualdez urged Filipinos in the US to ensure their legal status to avoid deportation.

However, concerns persist even for green card holders, especially after a recent case involving a FilipinoAmerican detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

On March 5, veterinary authorities in Turkey reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) an outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Sarayduzu, Merkez.

The temporary ban on poultry prod-

ucts from Turkey also includes poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs, and semen used for artificial insemination.

A memorandum order signed by Agriculture secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. on March 26, 2025 also halted the issuance and processing of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances for the identified commodities from Turkey, and ordered the rejection of any products slaughtered or manufactured before January 1 of this year.

“The import ban is a pre-emptive measure to safeguard the poultry industry, a vital sector of the economy that generates jobs and investments

and plays an essential role in the government’s push for food security,” Tiu Laurel said.

Tiu Laurel likewise signed separate memorandum orders to implement the ban on domestic buffaloes from Hungary on March 7 and on domestic cattle from South Korea on March 18.

FMD is a highly contagious and severe viral disease that affects livestock, leading to significant economic consequences. The virus primarily impacts animals with cloven hooves, including cattle, swine, and goats. Both incidents were confirmed by veterinary authorities in the respective countries and reported to WOAH.

APIS implementation to become mandatory

AIRLINES will be required to integrate the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) into their system once the phased implementation becomes successful, Malacañang said on Friday.

The Bureau of Immigration earlier launched the APIS, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to enhance national security through digital transformation.

“Once everything is smooth, lahat na po ng airlines ay ima-mandatory na po na magsagawa na rin po ng APIS,” Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a Palace press briefing. PGH ER full; bring new patients to other gov’t hospitals—DOH

THE Department of Health called on healthcare institutions and practitioners to bring new patients to other government hospitals as the emergency room of the University of the PhilippinesPhilippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) has reached full capacity.

“In line with President Bongbong Marcos’ focus on health, the Depart-

ment of Health is ready to assist the UP-Philippine General Hospital (UPPGH) while its Emergency Room is temporarily full of patients,” Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said in a news release Friday.

“Upon investigation by the UP-PGH management, no unusual or dangerous reasons were found for this situation,

and the number may also decrease after a few days,” Herobosa added.

UP-PGH spokesperson Jonas del Rosario in a radio interview said there was no outbreak or disaster causing the overcapacity.

Most emergency cases involved common conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, cancer, and appendicitis,

among others, Del Rosario said.

“We don’t usually turn down patients. As much as possible, we accommodate, but it is really cramped right now,” he added.

Herbosa said the DOH is discussing with the UP-PGH the possibility of transferring some patients to DOH hospitals.

Proxy-war preps amid DU30 fight

THE millions of Filipinos now fighting the just political war against BBM’s gang of corrupt bullies in the Cabinet, the House of Representatives, the loyalist government bureaucracy and the supine security agencies from the National Security Council to the AFP, the PNP and PCG – the moving hand behind all the abominations against President Rodrigo R. Duterte and VP Sara Duterte is the American Deep State ramping up its proxy-war preparations.

The AFP just reported on March 25, 2025 that a second Mid-Range Capability Typhon missile from the United States Indo-Pacific Command is on the way to be installed in the Philippines. According to the AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Padilla, revealing her hidden macabre sense or ignorance, said, “This is a welcome development for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. We can say that the more the merrier.”

There is nothing to be merry about in the arrival of weapons of war amidst the growing hunger and poverty, economic retrogression and misery in the country receiving these weapons that will only be used to prime it for a proxy war for the US and the Western warmongers against the peacefully rising economic power of Asia and driver of global economic prosperity – China.

The US is spurring Philippine political chaos and economic impoverishment to prime its people for hate, desperation, psychosis and, then, war – a Ukraine 2.0.

The Inquisition against Duterte began in Feb. 2023 when the first signs of BBM’s “pivot to the US” began in the execution of the US “assertive transparency,” PCG baiting of the Chinese Coast Guards into confrontations for media sensationalism, then the hearings on POGO taint anything Chinese and followed by the inquiries into the Dept. of Education confidential funds, impeachment, hearing against “Duterte bloggers” ad nauseam.

The US sees the Dutertes and their staunch adherence to the Philippine Constitution’s “independent foreign policy” as the most formidable stumbling block to its total control of the Philippines and its campaign to prime it for its next major proxy war.

US generals have been since Air Force General Mike Minihan in 2024 said he expected war with China in 2025 followed by then IndoPac chief Adm. John Aquilino who projected it for 2027 – and it is either or both Taiwan and/or the Philippines as launching pad.

The House anti-China propaganda inquiries and hearings have all ended in duds: the POGO inquiries never turned up the “spy networks” or the “PLA sleepers” but only succeeded in increasing unemployment and condo gluts, the

“confi-funds” did not turn up any anomalies, then the “Duterte bloggers” hearings and bullying that only increased public support for the bloggers, and, finally, the illegal arrest of former President Duterte to the Hague that has now incensed and mobilized tens of millions of Filipinos and foreign sympathizers against BBM and the US.

China’s evenhanded response to the Duterte abduction has earned it the endearment of the Filipinos

As a neutral observer, China had been drawn into commenting on the ICC apprehension of Duterte during a regular Ministry of Foreign Affairs press conference by a foreign correspondent, to which spokesman Mao Ning replied by cautioning the ICC from politicizing the case and to avoid any double-standard in handling it.

The US and its Filipino proxies tried to turn the case against China, falsely claiming in countless media disinformation releases that China denied an asylum application from Duterte while in Hong Kong. There was a clear disinformation campaign by Philippine mainstream media to plant the false asylum rejection story.

For instance. on March 11, 2025 VP Sara Duterte was already headlined by GMA Online that they never requested asylum in China, yet on March 20, 2025 GMA Online headlined the contrary that Duterte sought asylum in China and was denied – but the news only cited an unnamed “trusted source.”

This fake news was repeated several times thereafter and the GMA reporter was Maki Pulido in their “24 Oras” TV news.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to deny the news on their alleged rejected asylum application of Duterte three times, by my count over the week, proof of the persistent disinformation campaign.

China’s evenhanded response to the Duterte abduction has earned it the endearment of the Filipinos. The US and its proxies have tried to revive the West Philippine Sea issue but is being drowned out.

The culmination of the “Bring Tatay Digong Back Home” may soon be victorious, it’s a matter of time – and it may save the country from the Ukraine 2.0 fate.

Civil discord in our time

THE arrest of former President Duterte has heightened political tensions in the Philippines.

His supporters perceive the arrest as politically motivated and have organized protests across various regions and even in other countries where we have overseas Filipino workers. On the other hand, families of drug war victims and human rights organizations see it as a long-overdue step toward justice for the thousands killed in Duterte’s war against drugs, a grand criminal enterprise as the Quadcom hearings have exposed. I am with the latter and condemn strongly those who have been attacking the victims’ families and redtagging human rights advocates. But I have friends who are in the other side of this issue, among others Martin Delgra, the former Chair of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, who was present when Duterte was arrested and tried to stop his transfer to The Hague. Martin, whom we fondly call Chuckbong, was a fellow Jesuit Volunteer in 1981-1982 and we continue to be friends 44 years after that volunteer year. In 1990, on my first year as a lawyer,

when I worked on an ancestral domain case in Basilan, where he was a lawyer for the Catholic Church, he made sure I I could do my work safely.

Let me be clear: tolerance does not mean agreeing with opposing views

When he was LTFRB Chair, he would listen to me patiently as I sought to persuade him to be more open to new forms of transportation modalities like that offered by Grab and Angkas.

More than the picture of him putting his arms around Duterte, it is that image of Chuckbong in Basilan and in LTFRB that sticks with me. That is why in the immediate aftermath of the Duterte arrest, we communicated with each other and affirmed our friendship. But let me be clear: tolerance does not mean agreeing with opposing views and on Duterte’s crimes against humanity,

Critical nutrition crisis challenge

WE HEARD this week UNICEF raise the warning that at least 14 million children, including those in the Philippines, face hunger and a heightened risk of malnutrition or death this year, after major international donors like the United States have slashed aid budgets.

The quick-witted United Nations children’s agency, which promotes children’s rights and well-being in over 190 countries and territories to provide humanitarian and developmental aid, immediately urged governments and philanthropic institutions to contribute to its Child Nutrition Fund to head off an starvation wave.

The Philippines (population 117 million), where 95 children die of malnutrition daily, is among countries vulnerable and faces a triple burden of malnutrition where undernutrition, “hidden hunger” or micronutrient deficiencies, and rising cases of childhood obesity coexist and affect communities nationwide.

These challenges, which can affect growth, development, and future opportunities, often hit children the hardest, according to health and nutrition authorities.

Apart from the daily toll, 27 out of 1,000 Filipino children do not get past their fifth birthday.

Malnutrition, particularly stunting (low height for age), is a significant challenge for children in the Philip -

I vehemently disagree with Chuckbong and consider his support for Duterte fundamentally wrong. But I will communicate that in a way that allows dialogue to happen.

Incidentally, through the years, like many of us in Mindanao, we have close relatives and friends who were/are Duterte supporters.

But I never unfriended them, even as I have asserted/asserted my human rights position assertively and consistently. Now that I have stage 4 cancer, I will certainly not want to be estranged from relatives and friends because of politics.

My late mother, who was one of the oldest Duterte appointees and a trustee of the National Museum, and I first argued about Duterte. Eventually, we were able to “bracket,” to use a term from phenomenology, our political differences. Before she died in Oct. 2020, she came around to appreciate my position.

pines, with a high prevalence of undernutrition.

Despite having strong macroeconomic foundations and a solid policy environment, the Philippines is beleaguered by slow progress in health and nutrition.

Apart from the daily toll, 27 out of 1,000 Filipino children do not get past their fifth birthday

The last decade has seen challenges in the delivery of services, particularly in primary health care for adolescents, pregnant women, newborn, and children as well as in resolving the triple burden of childhood malnutrition – stunting and wasting, micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight and obesity – that has remained prevalent.

The country is also currently offtrack in meeting the Sustainable De -

cal thinking—examining evidence, questioning sources, and being open to new information. Tolerance does not mean agreeing with opposing views, but it does mean allowing space for different opinions to exist.. Here are some key strategies for maintaining civil discourse: Practice active listening, which means making a genuine effort to understand the other person’s perspective. This builds mutual respect and creates a more constructive conversation.

Debates can become highly emotional, but relying on verifiable facts helps keep discussions rational. Before forming strong opinions, research credible sources and be open to correcting misinformation—whether it comes from you or the other side.

Hostile or aggressive language escalates tensions quickly. Instead of attacking individuals, focus on debating ideas and policies.

Avoid personal insults, name-calling,

velopment Goals 2030 on maternal and neonatal deaths and has the second-highest rate of adolescent pregnancies among ASEAN nations. Official figures suggest 26.7 per cent of children under 5 years old are stunted and some regions have more, like Bangsamoro Region at 39 per cent.

An estimated 672,000 children suffer from wasting with about 50 per cent under the age of 2 years while 23 per cent of pregnant women are anemic, leading to low birthweight and pre-term delivery.

Childhood overweight and obesity are rapidly increasing, and have tripled since 2003.

It is good the Philippine government is addressing child malnutrition through a multi-pronged approach, including the implementation of the “Masustansyang Pagkain Para sa Batang Pilipino Act” for a national feeding program, the “Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay” Act for enhanced nutrition services, and the Philippine Multisectoral Nutrition Project with the UN, focusing on nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions.

The Department of Health, along with United Nations agency partners, UNICEF and the United Nations Office for Project Services, and World Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding formalizing the partnership in addressing malnutrition in the Philippines.

or sweeping generalizations that could shut down productive conversation. Even among opposing viewpoints, there is often a shared value or concern, such as the well-being of the nation or local community. Recognizing these commonalities can foster cooperation, encourage compromise, and open pathways for mutual understanding.

Not all debates will lead to consensus, and that is perfectly fine. The objective of civil discourse is not to “win” but to exchange perspectives and encourage critical thinking. Walking away with a broader understanding of different viewpoints—even without agreement—is a meaningful achievement. In this sense, civil discord can bear fruit. By approaching discussions with patience, respect, and open-mindedness, we can contribute to a more informed, united, and democratic society, even when tackling difficult issues.

At least 23 dead as ‘mass casualty’ quake hits Myanmar, Thailand

NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar—A massive earthquake Friday turned a major hospital in Myanmar’s capital into a “mass casualty area,” while at least three people were killed and dozens trapped in neighboring Thailand when a skyscraper collapsed.

About 20 people have died at a major hospital in Myanmar’s capital after a huge earthquake hit the country, causing widespread destruction, a doctor told Agence France Presse (AFP).

“About 20 people have died after they arrived at our hospital so far. Many people were injured,” said the doctor at the 1,000-bed general hospital in Naypyidaw, who requested anonymity. The shallow 7.7-magnitude tremor hit

Israel threatens Beirut after rocket launches

JERUSALEM– Israel’s defense minister threatened Beirut on Friday after rocket fire from Lebanon, rattling an already fragile truce that had largely ended more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah.

“If there is no quiet in Kiryat Shmona and the Galilee communities, there will be no quiet in Beirut either,” said defense chief Israel Katz, referring to the northern towns towards which the rockets were launched.

Israel’s military said in a statement Friday morning that two “projectiles” were launched from Lebanon towards Israel. One was intercepted, it said, while the other fell in Lebanese territory.

It was the second time rockets were fired from Lebanon since the November ceasefire brought an end to the fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, though Israel has continued to conduct occasional strikes in Lebanon’s south despite the truce.

“The Lebanese government bears direct responsibility for any fire toward the Galilee,” Katz said.

The latest rocket launches came hours after Israeli strikes killed six people in Lebanon’s south, with Israel saying it had targeted Hezbollah operatives.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported Israeli artillery shelling on the village of Khiam, five kilometres from the Israeli border.

It said the border community of Kfar Kila was also the target of shelling, and that the Israeli army was conducting a search-and-clear operation on Hammamess hill, where sustained gunfire could be heard.

The Lebanese movement Hezbollah began launching rockets at Israel on October 8, 2023 in support of its ally Hamas following the Palestinian group’s unprecedented attack on southern Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.

northwest of the city of Sagaing, central Myanmar, and was followed minutes later by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, toppling buildings, rupturing roads and collapsing the well-known Ava bridge. The devastation prompted a rare request for international aid from Myanmar’s isolated military junta, which has lost swathes of territory to armed groups, as it declared a state of emergency across the six worst-affected regions.

Hundreds of casualties were taken to a hospital in the capital Naypyidaw, with the wounded being treated outside because of damage to the building. The emergency department’s entrance had collapsed on top of a car.

A hospital official ushered journalists away, saying: “This is a mass casualty area.”

“I haven’t seen (something) like this before. We are trying to handle the situation. I’m so exhausted now,” a doctor told AFP.

AFP reporters saw junta chief Min

Aung Hlaing arrive at the hospital as the ruling military called for foreign help.

“We want the international community to give humanitarian aid as soon as possible,” junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun told AFP at the hospital.

The rare plea from the junta raises

the prospect that damage and casualties may be on a large scale, with Myanmar’s medical system and infrastructure ravaged by four years of civil war.

Skyscraper collapse

Across the border in Thailand, a 30-storey building under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told reporters at least three workers had been killed, with 81 more trapped inside.

Rescuers were surveying the tangle of rubble and twisted metal for a safe way to search for survivors, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

“I heard people calling for help, saying ‘help me,’” Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bang Sue district, told AFP.

“We estimate that hundreds of people are injured,” he said. AFP

Trump expands university DEI probes to California

LOS ANGELES – President Donald

Trump’s administration said Thursday (Friday Manila time) it will investigate admissions practices at some of California’s top universities, broadening a campaign against elite educational institutions.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said she had ordered probes into how students are admitted to the private Stanford University, as well as to three of the most prestigious campuses of the University of California system -- Berkeley, UCLA and UC Irvine.

“President Trump and I are dedicated to ending illegal discrimination and restoring

Latina star Selena’s killer denied parole 30 years after murder

HOUSTON – A woman sentenced to life in prison for murdering a MexicanAmerican pop star in a Texas motel was denied parole on Thursday, almost three decades after the killing.

“Every student in America deserves to be judged solely based on their hard work, intellect, and character, not the color of their skin.”

A spokesperson for the University of California said the institutions have not considered race in admissions since it was outlawed in the state by a 1996 ballot measure, but clarified school applications gather race and ethnicity data “for statistical purposes only.”

“This information is not shared with application reviewers and is not used for ad-

missions,” the spokesperson added.

A Stanford spokesperson said in a statement that the private university “immediately took steps to ensure compliance in our admissions processes” after the US Supreme Court eliminated race-based affirmative action in 2023. Conservatives have long griped that America’s foremost universities make it easier for ethnic minority students to attend. They say the insistence on the notion of “diversity, equity and inclusion,” or DEI, is damaging and unfair to otherwise wellqualified candidates. AFP

China’s Wang Yi to visit Russia for Ukraine talks

BEIJING – Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi will visit Russia next week for talks on issues including the resolution of the war in Ukraine, both countries said on Friday. Beijing and Moscow have ramped up economic cooperation and diplomatic contacts in recent years and their strategic partnership has only grown closer since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

China presents itself as a neutral party in that war and says it is not sending lethal assistance to either side, unlike the United States and other Western nations. But it is a close political and economic ally of Russia and NATO members have branded Beijing a “decisive enabler” of the war -- which it has never condemned.

“At the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov... Foreign Minister Wang Yi will pay an official visit to Russia from March 31 to April 2,” a foreign ministry spokesperson said. The visit will see him meet with Russian leaders and hold talks with Lavrov, Beijing said.

“China is willing to take this visit as an opportunity to work with Russia to promote the implementation of the important consensus reached by the two heads of state,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a briefing. He will also hold “in-depth communication on the development of China-Russia relations in the next stage and international and regional issues of common concern to both sides”, he said. Moscow’s foreign ministry said the visit will see them discuss “bilateral relations, high-level contacts -- including the highest level -- as well as the most pressing issues on the international agenda, including prospects for resolving the crisis around Ukraine”. BANGKOK – Thai police have arrested a French fugitive on the tropical holiday island of Phuket over a deadly prison breakout that freed a notorious drug baron nicknamed “The Fly.” Adonis Correa, 24, is the latest of two dozen suspects to be detained in a sprawling international manhunt after the shocking escape of suspected gangland kingpin Mohamed Amra from a prison van in northern France in May 2024. Correa is considered by investigators to be a “close friend” of Amra, who was arrested in Romania last month after nine months on the run as France’s “public enemy number one”.

Rubio vows to keep stripping visas after furor over snatched student

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday (Friday Manila time) he has canceled more than 300 visas in a crackdown on anti-Israel activism and vowed to keep doing so, brushing aside furor after masked agents snatched a student.

Rubio, a staunch supporter of Israel, said that he personally signed off on every visa revocation and rejected charges he was violating US protections of free speech.

Asked about a report on the number of visas he has stripped, mostly for students, Rubio said: “Maybe more than 300 at this point. We do it every day.”

“Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visas,” he told reporters on

a visit to Guyana.

“At some point I hope we run out because we’ve gotten rid of them,” Rubio said.

Since his return to the White House on Jan. 20, President Donald Trump has moved aggressively against student activists and universities over the disruptive protests that swept US colleges campuses in response to the Gaza war. Earlier this week, a video went viral of a 30-year-old Turkish graduate student, Rumeysa Ozturk, being detained by masked, plain-clothed figures near Tufts University in Massachusetts. Ozturk had penned an op-ed in a student newspaper decrying Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide.” She now faces deportation. AFP

PVL Final Four begins with high-stakes battles

THIS is the stage the semifinalists have eagerly awaited and rigorously prepared for. A win fuels their championship aspirations, pushing them closer to a dream finals appearance. A loss, however, leaves them teetering on the edge, with their title hopes hanging in the balance.

The Premier Volleyball League AllFilipino Conference kicks off its Final Four stage today (Saturday) at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, a high-stakes single round-robin showdown where every game matters. Each result could either propel a team toward the championship or derail their path entirely. With intense rivalries, electrifying plays and dreams on the line, expect nothing less than pure volleyball brilliance.

Choco Mucho and Akari are set to ignite the battle for supremacy as they clash in the 4 p.m. opener of what promises to be a nerve-wracking semis phase. Both squads earned their spots after grueling five-set victories in the quarterfinals – proof that no team is willing to back down in this do-or-die stretch. Their earlier encounter saw Choco Mucho win in four sets, but much has changed since that Feb. 8

showdown, making this rematch anything but predictable.

The Flying Titans are determined to erase the heartbreak of last year’s title pursuit, while the Chargers are equally focused on seizing a championship after falling short in the Reinforced Conference finals.

“Of course, we always say to take it one game at a time. We shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, we will keep working hard. So, this is an extra motivation for me – I will never give up on my team-

mates. That’s why we’ll get back to work again,” said Choco Mucho star Sisi Rondina in Filipino, on the semis after a grueling two-game series against PLDT.

But the Chargers are just as determined to launch their semis campaign on a strong note.

“We know our goal. We all know what we want to achieve. But how we achieve it – that’s what we work on every day, and it keeps us focused on one game at a time until we reach that goal.

A small step toward the bigger goal,” said Akari’s Faith Nisperos, who was not with the team during their Finals run in the Reinforced.

Choco Mucho, under the guidance of coach Dante Alinsunurin, boasts a lethal mix of power and defense with Sisi Rondina, Isa Molde, Maika Ortiz, Royse

Tubino, Cherry Nunag and the rising Mars Alba. Their ability to perform under pressure will be key in overcoming their unpredictable opponents.

On the other side, Akari coach Taka Minowa will be banking on Faith Nisperos, Ivy Lacsina, Eli Soyud, Grethcel Soltones, Camille Victoria and Fifi Sharma, while expecting big contributions from Ced Domingo, Ezra Madrigal and playmaker Michelle Cobb. But while Choco Mucho and Akari fight for an early advantage, all eyes remain on defending champions Creamline, which is gunning for an unprecedented 11th league title. However, even with their championship pedigree, the Cool Smashers face a formidable challenge in the 6:30 p.m. main event against the Petro Gazz Angels.

Tolentino reserves housing for LA Olympics medalists

MORE housing units will be reserved for Filipino athletes who win medals at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

For now, two empty lots have been set aside at the Prime Peak Townhouse subdivision in Barangay Silang Crossing West, Tagaytay City, Cavite.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino presented the vacant parcels of land, which will be awarded in the future, during a re-

cent turnover ceremony.

The event marked the official handover of housing units to Olympic medalists Carlos Yulo, Aira Villegas, and Nesthy Petecio in recognition of their victories at the Paris Olympics.

“The lots for LA 2028 are ready —there are two for now, but we can accommodate up to five,” said Tolentino.

Previously, housing units in Tagaytay were awarded to Filipino medalists from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, including boxers Carlo Paalam, Eumir Marcial, and Nesthy Petecio, as well as Hidilyn Diaz, the country’s first Olympic gold medalist.

One of the newly reserved lots, a 250-square-meter property located between Yulo’s and Petecio’s homes, bears a sign that reads, “Reserved for LA 2028 medalist.”

Yulo’s newly awarded home sits on a 500-square-meter lot, reportedly valued at ₱15 million, in recognition of his gold-medal wins in the floor exercise and vault events at the Paris Olympics.

Petecio, who secured a silver medal in Paris, now owns two housing units

Pilipinas 3x3 caging returns with a bang

THE revival of the sport took a significant step forward as key stakeholders gathered for a friendly tournament last Monday at the Gameville Ballpark in Mandaluyong, marking the soft launch of Pilipinas 3x3. Officials from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), Smart Sports, Strong Group Athletics (SGA), and MelMac Sports spearheaded the event, reigniting the pioneering 3x3 basketball league that had been dormant for the past year. The initiative aligns with SBP’s vision of reviving the country’s competitive standing in 3x3 basketball and beginning the journey towards Olympic qualification for the Los Angeles Games in 2028. SBP Executive Director Erika Dy expressed enthusiasm over the event’s success, emphasizing how the vibrant 3x3 community has remained active despite the league’s hiatus. MelMac Sports founder Mel Macasaquit, the architect behind the trailblazing 3x3 league, reflected on the significance of the event, drawing parallels to the Philippines’ historic qualification to the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying

Then, on November 1, it was officially announced—the Philippines had made it to the OQT. At the time, it was uncharted territory, but with the support of FIBA and SBP, we made it happen. The rest is history,” Macasaquit said.

San Juan foils Mindoro; Binan, Zamboanga win

THE San Juan Knights defused the Mindoro Tamaraws’ last bombs and prevailed 77-72 on Thursday to climb in the Manny Pacquiao presents 1xBetMPBL 2025 Season at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna. Coasting along, 71-60, with less than four minutes left, San Juan felt the heat as Mindoro drilled in four straight triples, the first by Jonas Tibayan and the rest by Wendelino Comboy, against the Knights’ four points and threatened at 72-75 with 43.6 seconds to go.

Dexter Maiquez, however, came to the rescue, grabbing the rebound following a missed jumper by Orlan Wamar and driving in with 16.5 ticks remaining to secure the Knights’ second straight win in the round-robin elimination phase of the 30-team tournament.

The Tamaraws sued for time but failed to execute their final plays and tumbled to a 1-4 record.

Michael Calisaan, who towed San Juan to its biggest spread at 69-54, emerged best player with 17 points, including six in the fourth quarter, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

Other Knights who shone for Coach Alex Angeles were Maiquez with 15 points and 7 rebounds, homegrown John Galinato with 14 points and 3 rebounds, and Wamar with 11 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

Comboy delivered 18 points, all from triples, Tibayan 14 points, spiked by three triples, and RJ Ramirez 12 points, laced by two triples, for the Tamaraws, who are on a three-game skid.

Filipinas face AFC qualifiers without key players

WITH key players absent, the Philippine national women’s football team is set to compete in the qualifiers for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup.

World Cup veterans Sarina Bolden and Quinley Quezada will miss the tournament due to injuries. Coach Mark Torcaso confirmed their absence, stating that both players needed time to recover.

“One suffered a minor injury in the last camp, while the other has been dealing with a recurring issue that required close monitoring over the past few weeks,” Torcaso explained.

The qualifiers will take place from June 29 to July 5 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The Filipinas have been drawn into a group alongside Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and Cambodia.

Torcaso emphasized that Bolden and Quezada will remain with their respective clubs for rehabilitation.

“We felt it was best for them to stay with their clubs and continue their rehab in a familiar environment. Unfortunately, Quinley Quezada was also not selected after sustaining a knee injury in the last camp,” he said.

Bolden currently plays for Como FC in Italy, while Quezada is with the Manila Diggers.

The winner of the group will secure a spot in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, set to be hosted in Australia.

BSP: Business optimism declined in first quarter

HILIPPINE business sentiment turned less optimistic in the first quarter of 2025, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Friday.

The overall confidence index (CI) fell to 31.2 percent from 44.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024, reflecting a rise in pessimism and a decline in optimism, the BSP said.

It said the less optimistic outlook for the first quarter was driven by concerns over a post-holiday drop in demand, a slowdown in business activity, and potential inflationary pressures, the central bank said.

The BSP said that for the second quarter of 2025, business sentiment improved, with the CI rising to 45.4 percent from 40.3 percent in the previous quarter.

The 12-month outlook remained positive, with the CI steady at 56.4 percent, unchanged from the fourth quarter of 2024.

Business sentiment was generally less optimistic across most sectors in the first quarter, with the construction sector showing little change.

Trading firms also reported less optimism, with lower CIs for exporters, dual-activity firms, and domestic-oriented firms, while importers saw little change.

Average capacity utilization for industry and construction fell to 71.4 percent in the first quarter from 73.9 percent in the fourth quarter.

Firms anticipate tighter financial conditions and credit access in the first quarter, with a more negative financial condition index and a return to negative territory for the credit access index (CAI).

Businesses expect the peso to depreciate against the U.S. dollar in the first and second quarters, but potentially appreciate over the next 12 months.

They also anticipate higher peso borrowing rates during these periods, the BSP said.

Inflation expectations rose for the first and second quarters, and the next 12 months. The BSP said the average expected inflation rate was 3.2 percent for the first quarter, 3.3 percent for the second quarter, and 3.4 percent for the next 12 months, all within the government’s 2.04.0 percent target range for 2025-2026.

BPI said the offering received strong demand from investors.

It said that in terms of geographic allocation for the 5-year notes, 93 percent were distributed to Asia and the remaining 7 percent to EMEA accounts.

The 5-year notes were distributed to high-quality fixed-income accounts: 52 percent to fund managers, 35 percent to banks and financial institutions, 12 percent to private banks and corporates and 1 percent to Insurance.

It said for the 10-year notes, 82 percent of the notes were distributed to Asia and the remaining 18 percent to EMEA accounts. The notes were also distributed to high quality fixed income accounts: 47 percent to fund managers, 23 percent to insurance and official institutions, 16 percent to banks and financial institutions, and 14 percent to private banks and corporates.

(EERI) will shut down a combined running capacity of 1,300 megawatts of natural gas power generation capacity from 9 a.m. on March 29 until 6:30 a.m. on March 31, 2025.

The natural gas plants in Batangas are owned by Meralco PowerGen Corp., the power arm of Manila Electric Co., San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. of San Miguel Corp., and Aboitiz Power Corp. The DOE said the shutdown is necessary for mechanical activities at Linseed Field Corp.’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal as it advised Luzon electricity consumers to conserve energy during the weekend.

It said Linseed’s LNG terminal activities are crucial for completing its first onshore LNG storage tank by the end of April. The LNG terminal is expected to resume gas delivery, allowing EERI to synchronize to the grid by 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, and SPPC Block 1, which requires a longer start-up period, by 9 p.m. on the same day. Both EERI and SPPC are expected to resume full capacity of 1,350 MW from the current 1,300 MW, respectively, by 6:30 a.m. Monday. The DOE said the shutdown was strategically planned in coordination with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to coincide with lower system demand, minimizing potential supply

PH stocks rebounded on foreign buying

PHILIPPINE stocks ended the choppy trading week in the green, as investors looked for bargains after the index fell below the 6,200 level.

The 30-company Philippine Stock Exchange Index closed at 6,147.44 Friday, up by 7.93 points, or 0.13 percent, while the broader all-shares index climbed 4.59 points or 0.12 percent.

“Investors hunted for bargains today as the market has been in the negative territory for the most part of the week,” Philstocks Financial Inc. research head Japhet Tantiangco said. Tantiangco said foreign investors

buying, amounting to P70.34 million, contributed to the market’s uptick.

Despite foreign buying, trading was lethargic, with net value turnover at P3.26 billion reflecting the weak confidence towards the market amid global trade uncertainties.

Properties led the sectors, gaining 0.95 percent while services advanced 0.74 percent. The banks lost the most, shedding 0.27 percent. Gainers outnumbered losers, 110 to 75.

PAL’s

income dropped 51% to P10.2b in ‘24

PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) on Friday reported a 51-percent decrease in net income last year, citing reduced revenue and increased operating costs.

The airline unit of tycoon Lucio Tan posted a net income of $151.1million (P10.22 billion) in 2024, down from $379 million (P21 billion) in 2023. PAL generated revenues of $3.13 billion (P179.67 billion), a 4-percent reduction from the $3.25 billion (P180.73 billion) logged in 2023. Passenger revenues declined by 6 percent from $2.87 billion to $2.70 billion, while cargo and ancillary revenues registered a healthy increase of 12 percent to $159.7 million and 16 percent to $271.7 million, respectively.

The fourth quarter of 2024 showed an 8 percent increase in systemwide revenues to $790.2 million compared to $733 million in the third quarter.

This marked PAL’s 13th straight profitable quarter that reflects disciplined cost management, sustained passenger demand, and strategic network expansion, reinforcing its position as one of the region’s most resilient full-service air carriers.

“We are very pleased with the solid financial performance achieved by the Philippine Airlines team, an outcome

of greater operational efficiency, improved schedule reliability, and more consistent service across our global network,” PAL president and chief operating officer Stanley Ng said.

“In 2024, PAL operated 5 percent more flights while improving ontime-performance by 2 percent and schedule reliability by 4 percent.

These gains contributed to a significant increase in customer satisfaction (CSAT) scores, which rose to 73 percent, and net promoter scores (NPS), which reached +43, both ranking among the strongest results we’ve delivered to date,” he said.

PAL carried 15.6 million passengers in 2024, or 6 percent higher than in 2023, while mounting a total of 110,867 flights systemwide, a 5 percent increase from the 105,294 flights operated in 2023.

The calibrated expansion of PAL’s network included the launching of Manila-Seattle nonstop flights last October, PAL’s first new U.S. route in nine years, along with progressive increases in frequencies on various international and domestic routes.

SEC approves merger of LandBank, UCPB units

THE Philippines’ Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the merger of Land Bank of the Philippines subsidiaries, LANDBANK Leasing and Finance Corporation (LLFC) and UCPB Leasing and Finance Corporation (ULFC), with LLFC as the surviving entity.

Operational turnover and transition activities followed the SEC approval, LandBank said in a statement.

The merger, authorized by Presi-

dent Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Executive Order 65 on Aug. 6, 2024, aims to eliminate overlapping mandates and functions. It follows Land Bank’s 2022 integration of United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB), which brought ULFC under Land Bank’s control.

“This merger is a strategic step towards strengthening our leasing and finance operations, ensuring greater efficiency and financial capability to support key sectors,” said Land Bank

Equal opportunity, meritocracy enable SM Group’ s sustained business growth

SM GROUP said it continues to prioritize equal opportunity and meritocracy, emphasizing the empowerment of women in its workforce, during the Philippines’ Women’s Month.

The company said these principles are core to its business practices, fostering an inclusive environment that contributes to sustained growth and long-term success.

“Empowering women through equal opportunity and meritocracy drives performance and promotes growth of organizations,” said Elizabeth Anne Uychaco, SM Investments executive vicepresident for corporate services, group diversity officer and chief risk and compliance officer.

SM said women comprise 64 percent of its workforce, with 58 percent holding senior leadership positions.

“Retail has a ratio of 60/40 [female versus male employees]. In terms of females in the senior manager and executive positions, females are twice as many as their male counterparts,” said Leny Hernandez, SM Retail Inc.’s senior vice-president for human resources.

SM Investments was recognized for its “evidence-based progress” on gender equality in Transparency and Reporting at the 2024 Philippines Women’s Empowerment Principles Awards by the United Nations.

The company also highlighted initiatives like SM Hotels’ Tela Tales campaign and SM Store’s Green Finds Tarp project, which it said support social and economic inclusion by partnering with women leaders and groups aligned with SM’s value of social entrepreneurship.

WILCON Depot, Inc., a leading home improvement and finishing construction supplies retailer, said its net income fell 27.4 percent in 2024 to P2.528 billion from a year ago, on lower revenues. Net sales declined 1.2 percent to P34.17 billion despite the addition of 10 stores. Sales from depot format amounted to P32.829 billion, down by 1.5 percent, while same-store-sales growth dipped 5.8 percent. The contribution from new stores was offset by the decline in comparable sales. It said the smaller format Do-ItWilcon’s sales totaled P996 million, growing by 34.4 percent due to addition of two new stores during the year.

“We finally achieved our 100thstore target in December last year. At the end of 2024, we had 89 depots and 11 smaller-format, Do It Wilcon [DIW] stores. The year 2024 continued to be a challenging year for home improvement as the market remained soft. While we have seen improvements in customer and transaction counts in the fourth quarter, ticket and basket sizes shrank as customers continue to down trade,” said Lorraine Belo-Cincochan, Wilcon president and chief executive.

realme 14 Pro+ 5G: Flagship-level photography from midrange marvel

either make or break today’s smartphones.

In the case of the realme 14 Pro+ 5G, it’s the former.

realme’s latest offering has done it again, and that is to deliver a topnotch phone that doesn’t disappoint as far as its photography or shooting capabilities are concerned, which should be enough reason to consider the realme 14 Pro+ 5G at the top of your list.

The rest of its features? Consider them as a bonus.

Camera System

As stated in our first impressions last week, the camera system is where the magic happens for the realme 14 Pro+ 5G. The triple-lens setup, comprising a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, and an 8MP ultra-wide lens, offers a versatile range of photographic capabilities at even flagship levels. In good lighting conditions, the main camera shines as you get vibrant colors, excellent detail, and a good dynamic range as shown in our photos from a recent Nature Escape Camp in Daraitan, Tanay, Rizal. Photos are generally ready to share without much editing. The 50MP resolution allows for cropping in later if needed.

On the other hand, the 3x optical zoom is a game-changer. Unlike the grainy digital zoom you often find, the shots from the telephoto lens retain a lot of detail and clarity. Even at 6x hybrid zoom, the results are still quite usable. The 120x superzoom is more of a novelty, and image quality degrades significantly at those extreme levels, but it can be fun for trying to see distant objects.

Meanwhile, the 8MP ultrawide is decent in good light, providing that wider perspective without too much distortion at the edges. However, as expected with lower-resolution ultrawide lenses,

the detail isn’t as rich as the main sensor, and it does struggle more in lowlight scenarios.

Low-light performance is where the OIS on both the main and telephoto lenses really helps. The main camera captures bright and detailed images even in challenging low-light conditions. The dedicated Night Mode further improves this by brightening the scene and reducing noise, although sometimes it can make the images look a bit artificial. The telephoto lens also performs surprisingly well in low light for zoomed

As I’ve said, the rest of the realme 14 Pro+ 5G’s features are a bonus, but are still an integral part of what make this phone a standout in the midrange market. Design and build quality

Our review unit, the “Pearl White” variant, impresses with its temperature-activated color-changing back

The subtle shift in hue, a gentle response to environmental changes, elevates the device from a mere gadget to a piece of interactive art. The curved front and back panels, meticulously crafted, provide a comfortable and ergonomic grip, while the slim profile ensures that the phone feels light and manageable in hand.

Beyond aesthetics, Realme has prioritized durability. The device boasts TÜV Rheinland Rugged Smartphone Certification, a testament to its ability to withstand the rigors of daily use. Additionally, the IP68/IP69 rating ensures protection against water and dust, providing users with peace of mind in various environments. This blend of elegance and resilience sets the Realme 14 Pro+ 5G apart from its competitors.

Display

The 6.83-inch quad-curved OLED display is a visual masterpiece. With a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, it delivers stunning clarity and fluid motion. Colors are vibrant and accurate, and the high brightness levels ensure excellent visibility even under direct sunlight. The thin bezels maximize the screen-tobody ratio, creating an immersive viewing experience that elevates everything from browsing social media to watching high-definition videos.

Performance and Battery

The realme 14 Pro+ 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, which strikes a balance between performance and efficiency. I’m not a gamer myself, so I wasn’t able to test its limits. But I can confidently say that it handles everyday tasks with ease. Whether binging your favorite series, listening to your Spotify playlists for hours, or generally surfing the net, the realme 14 Pro+ 5G ensures a smooth and seamless experience.

shots, which is a big plus. The 32MP front camera produces high-quality selfies with natural skin tones and good detail. Those that were taken indoors and outdoors had good clarity, and the portrait mode offered a nice bokeh effect. Even the video recording in the realme 14 Pro+ 5G is solid as it can record up to 4K video at 30fps on the rear cameras, with the OIS helping to keep the footage stable. Details are sharp, and the dynamic range in videos is decent. The front camera also supports 4K at 30fps, which is great for vloggers.

THE new season of Pilipinas Got Talent is gearing up to be more than just another talent show.

We had a chance to see how PGT season 7 would roll out through its “press edition,” which took place during its grand media conference at ABS-CBN’s Studio 10 on March 19.

Four members of the media participated. And just like what we see on the show, they were interviewed by the hosts Robi Domingo and Melai Cantiveros before they performed.

While Melai and Robi kept things lively, judges Freddie M. Garcia (FMG), Donny Pangilinan, Eugene Domingo, and Kathryn Bernardo set the tone for the season.

FMG, a veteran PGT judge, remains as sharp as ever. He offered blunt yet insightful critiques. His focus on technical execution and stage presence will likely set a high bar for contestants.

Donny, one of the fresh faces on the panel, adds youthful energy. Based on how he evaluated each performance, it’s obvious that he values creativity and audience engagement.

Eugene injects humor, making the judging process more entertaining. Meanwhile, Kathryn appears to be the heart of the panel. She gave encouraging feedback and even pressed the golden buzzer for one lucky contestant.

Kathryn acknowledged the weight of her role. “At the end of the day, I think about whether the advice I gave was right and if my ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ was fair. We have the power to change a person’s dream or make it come true,” she said. Her statement highlights the often-overlooked responsibility of talent show judges—these decisions can make or break someone’s future.

THE mini-series Walang Matigas na Pulis

sa Matinik na Misis won Best Mini Series at the 38th PMPC Star Awards for Television on Sunday at Dolphy Theater. Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. , who played the lead role of Tolome, expressed his excitement over the recognition.

“From its inception until its last airing, we’ve done our best to give televiewers not only a show that’s full of action and laughter but also lessons and depth,” Revilla said.

The series, which recently concluded its third season, remains a topic of discussion for its mix of action, comedy, and drama. Revilla shared the award with co-stars Beauty Gonzalez, Niño Muhlach, Dennis Padilla , and the rest of the cast.

Speculation continues on whether the series will return for a fourth season, but Revilla has yet to confirm if Walang Matigas na Pulis sa Matinik na Misis will be back on television.

‘Pilipinas Got Talent’ kicks off with fresh energy

FMG is optimistic about this season’s talent pool. “The level of talent has risen. I would say they can be compared to world-class acts,” he noted. With technological advancements adding new dimensions to performances, viewers may be in for a more dynamic season. Donny is looking for performances that leave

a lasting impact. “The kind of performance that shifts the environment after you watch it,” he said. It’s a bold expectation, but one that reflects the growing standards of reality competitions.

Eugene, always the entertainer, summed up her excitement succinctly: “This is everything.

The inspiring story of Myra Doria

MYRA Doria , who started her career at McDonald’s in the Philippines nearly four decades ago, now oversees 14,000 restaurants in the United States as the company’s National Field President.

Doria began working at McDonald’s in 1985 at a branch in Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga, known as Store 005. She steadily rose through the ranks, eventually assuming one of the top leadership roles in the fast-food giant’s U.S. operations.

“Standing up here today reminds me of why I got into this business in the first place, and all the incredible people I’ve met along the way,” Doria said during a recent visit to the Philippines for an operations leadership summit organized by McDonald’s Philippines.

Born and raised in Minalin, Pampanga, Doria was the eldest of six siblings. She learned the value of hard work early on, helping her parents with their business at a public market. Her journey with McDonald’s started when her mother, without her knowledge, requested a job application during a visit to the restaurant. Eleven interviews later, she was hired as a management trainee.

Doria’s career path took her to the United States when her husband, who was in the U.S. Navy, was stationed in Guam. Adapting to a new country posed

challenges, she said, but she persevered and moved up through McDonald’s ranks, from business consultant to field vice president and zone president.

In 2023, she was appointed National Field President, overseeing more than $56 billion in annual sales and leading 1,800 franchisees and 500 corporate employees.

McDonald’s has emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion, particularly in empowering women. In the Philippines, women comprise 51 percent of key workforce segments, including 57 percent of store managers and 53 percent of the leadership team. The country also has the highest percentage of female sub-franchisees among McDonald’s Developmental Licensee markets.

Doria credited her mentors and supporters for helping her succeed, including McDonald’s Philippines Chairman and Founder George T. Yang, who hired her as a management trainee.

“George gave me my first opportunity 40 years ago. If not for him, who knows where I’d be today,” she said. Yang said he was proud of

KNOWN for combining classic elegance with modern style, Rock Robins has made a name for himself in the Philippine design scene, turning spaces into stunning works of art. This week, I had the chance to sit down with him and hear his story.

Rock was exposed to his family business early in life. Their company imports tiles and other finishing materials from Spain, Italy, and China. Traveling abroad to attend international exhibits for their family business, La Europa Ceramica and Robins Design Gallery, inspired him to design his own spaces, whether residential or commercial.

“I would say I like to experiment with different design styles based on what my clients want in their space, adding my signature touch of a welcoming and homey environment. Over the years, with experience, I am proud to say that the spaces I work on are now more polished and refined but still stay true to my philosophy—that a space needs to be livable and designed for its proper function,” Rock said, describing how his design has evolved. Rock likes to draw inspiration from his travels. Every time he visits a different country, he gets to experience various design styles, as he finds it very interesting to learn

Doria’s achievements.

Known for developing leaders within McDonald’s, Doria has mentored executives who now hold senior positions in McDonald’s operations in Australia and the United Kingdom. She said taking risks was a key element of leadership.

“My advice to everyone is don’t be afraid. Take risks. Actually, the

“Being

higher the risks, the greater the gain,” she said. As the world celebrates International Women’s Month, McDonald’s emphasizes that it is an environment where women say “I M Power.” They are empowered to be their best selves, and they are empowered to bring out the best in others. As a woman, Doria was “#MPowered” to succeed as national field president and a member of the McDonald’s US Senior Leadership Team. And women have the opportunity to “#MPower,” be “#MPowered,” and be their best selves at McDonald’s, just like Doria. spoilt with choices of different local materials and furniture pieces that are internationally loved and could be proudly used in any residential or commercial space to add that Filipino touch,” Rock said about how his Filipino heritage influences his design. Like in most endeavors, Rock knows that collaboration is key. The first step in his projects is always understanding what the client wants. Then, it is vital that they sit down

with his design studio team for the design drawings and perspectives.

Rock adds, “Complete working drawings are a must before coordinating with contractors and suppliers. During construction, I monitor progress and update clients to avoid delays or mistakes. Once done, my team and I accessorize the space and prepare it for turnover.”

Rock’s design philosophy has always been to deliver a space that the client wants or needs.

“I always tell my clients that the most important thing in our collaboration is that I am able to deliver something they would want to live in or make their business reach their target markets. When I say collaboration, it is the client’s wants and needs fused with my design aesthetic. Both parties need to trust each other for a successful project to be realized,” he continues. Rock also emphasizes the importance of learning about sustainability in interior design. His design studio maximizes the use of sustainable materials and locally sourced items to cut down on CO2 emissions. However, he admits that the Philippines is still very far from its international counterparts in terms of sustainability. By traveling to different places, Rock gets to see new trends in design. He also likes to follow blogs and social media, where he can instantly see new products and materials that can be used in local projects. His most rewarding interior design project to date was designing his parents’ house.

“It’s just really nice to make them feel the love from the space that I created for them,” Rock said.

As we draw the curtains on this exploration of the world of interior design through the lens of a Filipino designer, it’s clear that the artistry, cultural richness, and innovative spirit of the Philippines shine brightly in every space created.

MARCH 29, 2025

THE relentless heat of a Philippine summer demands more than just an ice-cold serving of halo-halo and a good electric fan. In this age of constant connectivity and digital convenience, technology plays a crucial role in surviving and thriving during the sweltering months. From staying entertained during brownouts to capturing those precious beach memories, having the right tech essentials can make all the difference.

First and foremost, let’s address the elephant in the room – power. Brownouts, unfortunately, remain a familiar reality in many parts of the Philippines, especially during peak summer when electricity grids are strained. A reliable power bank is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Look for one with a high capacity (measured in mAh) to keep your smartphones, tablets, and even portable fans running for hours. Consider models with multiple USB ports so you can charge several devices simultaneously, ensur-

Philippine summer with the right tech

ing you’re always prepared for any situation. Some even come with solar charging capabilities, a convenient feature if you spend extended periods outdoors where wall sockets are scarce. Don’t forget to invest in a durable charging cable as well – flimsy ones are prone to breaking, especially when you’re constantly on the go. When the summer sun is at its peak, finding relief can be a challenge. While a powerful air conditioner is the ultimate weapon against the heat, it’s not always accessible or affordable. This is where portable fans come into play, offering a comforting breeze wherever you go. The market is now flooded with compact, rechargeable fans that can easily fit in your bag. Some even clip onto your

desk or stroller, providing a personal breeze that can bring a sense of calm in the midst of the sweltering heat. Neck fans have become increasingly popular for those who prefer a more hands-free approach. These wearable devices blow cool air directly onto your face and neck, offering a welcome respite from the oppressive humidity. But if you want more flexibility in where you want the air to hit your body, handheld portable fans, which also come in jet types for a stronger wind current, are a good choice. Pair your portable fan with a misting spray bottle for an extra burst of coolness—the evaporating water will feel incredibly refreshing. However, be cautious when using the misting spray, as excessive

use can lead to wet surfaces and potential slip hazards. Beyond personal cooling, maintaining a comfortable indoor environment extends to managing humidity levels. High humidity can make even bearable temperatures feel stifling and contribute to mold growth and discomfort. Dehumidifiers are invaluable for extracting excess moisture from the air, creating a drier and more comfortable living space. Look for models with sufficient water tank capacity and features like automatic shut-off and humidity level control. Conversely, humidifiers can add moisture to the air for those seeking to combat dry air, especially in airconditioned environments, alleviating dry skin and irritated sinuses and even protecting wooden furniture. Consider ultrasonic humidifiers, which operate quietly and produce a fine mist, or cool mist humidifiers, which are generally safer for households with young children. Summer in the Philippines is synonymous with vacations, and vacations often mean capturing memories. While your smartphone likely has a decent camera, consider investing in a waterproof action camera if you spend a lot of time in

or around water. These rugged little devices can withstand splashes, submersion, and even accidental drops, allowing you to document your snorkeling adventures, beach volleyball games, and cliff-diving escapades without worrying about damaging your precious phone. The versatility of these cameras can inspire you to embark on new and exciting adventures, capturing every moment in stunning detail.

Another key feature when selecting smartphones, especially in summer, is their durability. It’s essential that they can withstand extreme heat or regulate their processes when exposed to it. In the meantime, being resistant to dust and water can make them ideal companions on the beach because you won’t have to worry about getting water damage or a scratched screen.

On the other hand, entertainment is key to surviving long, hot afternoons indoors. When the heat becomes unbearable and venturing outside feels like stepping into an oven, having a wealth of digital entertainment at your fingertips is a lifesaver. A subscription to a streaming service like Netflix, Disney+, or HBO Go can provide endless hours of movies and TV shows to binge-watch.

For bookworms, e-readers like Kindle offer a lightweight and convenient way to carry an entire library with you. Meanwhile, for gamers, handheld consoles like the Nintendo Switch or even just a smartphone with a good selection of mobile games can help to keep the hours away during a power outage or a long commute. Don’t forget a good pair of noise-canceling headphones to fully immerse yourself in your chosen entertainment and block out the sounds of a busy household.
