THE family of steel magnate Anson Que as well as Filipino-Chinese civic leader Teresita Ang See have dismissed the theory of the Philippine National Police that a POGO-linked debt collector group may have been involved in the abduction and murder of the businessman and his driver.
“The family of the late Anson Tan (Anson Que) firmly disputes allegations that their father was involved in POGO transactions. They have no rental property in Bulacan to speak of,” said the family in a statement released through their lawyer Kit Belmonte in a statement.
“Mr. Tan has been engaged in legitimate business for decades and is a stalwart member of the Filipino-Chinese business community and is known for his charitable work. During his lifetime, he stayed
away from shady dealings and only did business with people he knew and trusted.”
“We appeal to the public to remain critical of misleading news and thank everyone for their support. The family will continue to fully cooperate with the Philippine National Police even as they request that they be accorded privacy during this time of grief and mourning,” the family added.
Ang See, founding chairperson of the Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order, said there was

Ariza was relieved from his post amid an investigation into the shooting of Albuera, Leyte mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa.
Ariza’s relief followed the detention of seven Ormoc-based cops who are now considered persons of interest in the crime, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said. Col. Dennis Jose Llavore was designated officer-in-charge.
Espinosa was shot in the right shoulder by an unidentified assailant around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday while attending a campaign event.
He has denied allegations that the shooting incident, which also injured Espinosa’s sister and a minor, was selfinflicted.
“Why would I shoot myself in the chest and use a double-action bullet? You can see the big puncture on my arm. Why would I stage hurting myself?” Espinosa said.
2 GRADE 8 STUDENTS KILLED BY THREE SCHOOLMATES OUTSIDE LAS PIÑAS SCHOOL
TWO Grade 8 students were killed after being stabbed by fellow students outside their school while on their way home on Friday, Las Piñas City police chief Col. Sandro Tafalla. Tafalla said the victims were both 15 years old and Grade 8 students.
He said one of the victims died while undergoing treatment for a stab in the neck, while the other was pronounced
dead on arrival at the hospital.
Police said one of the victims had an argument with a 15-year-old Grade 9 student after the former played with the lights in the comfort room of their school.
Last month, a 14-year-old female student of a school in Parañaque was fatally stabbed by a 15-year-old male victim.
no basis for the PNP’s suggestion linking the killing of Que and his driver Armanie Pabillo to POGOs.
“No basis at all – this just showed the ineptness of the police. They are victimizing the family all over again. Haven’t they suffered enough?” Ang See said.
Manila Standard sought comment from the Philippine National Police regarding the statements of Que’s family and Ang See but has yet to receive a reply.
On Friday, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said a group of debt collectors related to illegal POGO operations may be behind the kidnapping and murder of Que and his driver Armanie Pabillo.
She said the same group was previously tagged in a similar kidnap-for-ransom case last year.
“The manner on how the kidnapped victims were killed -- even the use of duct tape to cover their victims faces, our two victims were put inside a nylon bag, and their hands were tied behind -- it is
similar to the first incident involving a Chinese national last year,” Fajardo said.
“The group we mentioned in the first incident and may be connected with this new case was involved before with POGOs in that their modus operandi is they are allegedly the collectors of debt in relation to POGO operations,” she added.
Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla said they are looking into all possible motives behind the murder, including reports alleging that ex-POGO bosses were demanding a refund from Que.
Also on Friday, the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. held a meeting with the PNP, DOJ and the National Bureau of Investigation.
It held a separate meeting with officials from the Chinese Embassy who expressed deep concern over the case and other public security affecting Chinese nationals in the country.

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is encouraging greater participation among overseas Filipino voters as the monthlong overseas voting begins on April 13, while also reinforcing security measures for the 2025 national and local elections through inter-agency coordination with top security officials.
Comelec chair George Erwin Garcia expressed hope that at least 50 percent of the 1.321 million registered overseas voters will participate in this year’s elections, bolstered by the introduction of Internet voting in 77 out of 93 posts abroad.
Filipinos can now cast their votes using mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.
Around 40,000 voters have already enrolled for online voting through ov.comelec.gov.ph/ enroll, where each registrant will be issued login credentials to vote remotely.
Garcia highlighted the convenience of this system, particularly for seafarers who no longer need to dock to vote.
He assured the public that Internet voting is secure, having passed international certifications and source code reviews, with various security measures in place.
Meanwhile, 13 posts abroad—including countries like China and Russia—will use automated counting machines (ACMs), as local laws do not permit online voting.

In a statement released by the National Security Council (NSC), the two officials exchanged views on regional security concerns,
with particular focus on the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea. They also explored future bilateral activities aimed at accelerating the progress of the longstanding defense partnership between the two countries.
Both sides underscored the importance of engaging with likeminded partners to maintain a free, open, and prosperous IndoPacific region. Año and Waltz agreed to continue their dialogue and maintain close coordination
between their respective teams, including discussions at the working level.
Año expressed his appreciation for the United States’ “ironclad commitment” to the Philippines, reaffirming the strength of the alliance amid rising regional tensions.
The introductory call marks a continuation of high-level engagement between the Philippines and the U.S. as both nations navigate complex security dynamics in the region.

A HOUSE leader has condemned the increasing number of Filipino vloggers parroting and spreading China’s false narrative on the West Philippine Sea. House Ad Hoc Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation chair Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur said these social media personalities are traitors and do not deserve to be called Filipinos.
He emphasized that this is not just fake news, but an outright betrayal of the country.
Adiong said it is disturbing that some Filipino vloggers are supporting China’s false narrative to claim parts of Philippine territory.
He described this as not only an act of treason but a gradual dismantling of the nation’s sovereignty with every post.
Adiong further said that betray -

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), in coordination with the Philippine Navy’s Naval Special Operations Command (NAVSOCOM), destroyed 570 grams of hazardous chemicals used in the production of explosives.
These chemicals, part of a larger seizure from an industrial plant in Marilao, Bulacan last week, were safely detonated at the Crow Valley Ranges in Capas, Tarlac.
Authorities revealed that initial findings point to the chemicals being exported to China.
One of the confiscated substances, tungsten, was found to have a purity level of 95.2%, indicating its potential for military applications such as tank shells, hypersonic missiles, anti-armor rounds, and high explosives.
Three individuals — two Chinese nationals and one Filipino — were arrested after allegedly attempting to bribe NBI agents with P1 million per detained suspect for their release.
The investigation has uncovered the involvement of a Chinese-owned corporation engaged in the illegal importation, manufacture, and export of controlled chemicals used in explosive production.
Pot Chavez BI AGENTS
NOT K-pop but Korean fraudsters. This is how the Bureau of Immigration (BI) described the two Korean couple who were arrested for being wanted by the Interpol and authorities in their country for large-scale fraud.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado identified the couple as Choi Jeongyun and Kim Minwoo, both 41-years-old, who were arrested at their residence along Gallery Drive, Bgy Carmona, Makati City.
Viado said the two were arrested after the BI received information from the South Korean government about the crimes Choi and Kim committed. BI records show that the two aliens are already overstaying, as they both arrived in the country was in 2019 and have not left since then.
Choi and Kim are both subjects of red notices by the Interpol due to arrest warrants that were issued against them by the Chucheon district court in Korea. Authorities alleged that the couple engaged in voice phishing operations on the internet which enabled them to defraud their victims of more than $840,000 by pretending to be bankers or representatives of a financial institution.
Choi allegedly worked as a profit manager while Kim was employed as manager and telemarketer for the syndicate since 2017. Vito Barcelo
AIRPORT SECURITY ARREST TRAVELER WITH DRUGS IN NAIA
THE Police Aviation Security Group arrested a passenger who was caught in possession of illegal drugs in Ninoy Aquino International Airport—Terminal 2.
The suspect, a 33-year-old resident of San Mateo, Rizal, was about to board a flight to Davao when flagged during routine screening.
Office for Transportation Security (OTS) personnel noticed a suspicious bulge in his pocket, which led to the discovery of an improvised sachet wrapped in duct tape and a small glass tube.
A joint team from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Police K-9 unit responded and conducted an investigation. The team confirmed the presence of illegal drugs, and further testing revealed 1.5 grams of high-grade marijuana, or “Kush,” valued at P2,100. The suspect is now in PDEA custody and will be charged with violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Joel E. Zurbano

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump insisted Friday that his tariff policy was
“doing really well” despite China hiking levies on US goods to 125 percent in the spiraling trade war between the world’s two biggest economies.
The White House said Trump remained “optimistic” about a deal with China, and added that 15 other countries have offers“on the table”during his 90-day pause in their tariffs.
But Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt added that “the president made it very clear, when the United States is punched he will punch back harder.”
Investors dumped US government bonds, the dollar tumbled and stocks seesawed after Beijing’s retaliation against Trump deepened concerns on already traumatized global markets.
Trump sent financial markets into a tailspin by announcing sweeping import taxes on dozens of trade partners last week, only to abruptly roll them back to 10 percent on Wednesday for 90 days — while raising levies on goods from China.
“We are doing really well on our tariff policy,”Trump said in a post on his Truth Social network after China announced its latest hike.
“Very exciting for America, and the World!!! It is moving along quickly,” he wrote.
The US and Beijing have been trading salvos of increasingly harsh tariffs since last week.
Chinese President Xi Jinping gave his first major comments on the tensions on Friday, with state media quoting him as saying his country was “not afraid.”
Xi also said the European Union and China should“jointly resist unilateral bullying practices”during talks with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Beijing announced after Xi’s comments that new tariffs of 125 percent on US goods would take effect Saturday – almost matching the staggering 145 percent level imposed on Chinese goods coming into America.
A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said the United States bore full responsibility, deridingTrump’s tariffs as a “numbers game” that “will become a joke.”
But China’s finance ministry said
AT LEAST 69 people were killed this week in unusually intense thunderstorms across eastern India’s Bihar state and in neighboring Nepal, officials said Saturday.
While flash floods and lightning kill thousands of people each year, scientists warn that rising global temperatures are unleashing a cascade of extreme weather events.
Bihar disaster authorities said Saturday that at least 61 people had died in strong thunder and lightning storms on Thursday and Friday.
Eight more people were killed in neighboring Nepal, disaster officials told AFP, blaming “lightning strikes” on Wednesday and Thursday.
Heavy rain is forecast to hit Bihar again on Saturday, according to the local India Meteorological Department office.
Last year, experts warned that climate change was fuelling an alarming increase in deadly lightning strikes in India, killing nearly 1,900 people a year in the world’s most populous country.
Lightning caused 101,309 deaths between 1967 and 2020, with a sharp increase between 2010 and 2020, a team of researchers led by Fakir Mohan University in the eastern state of Odisha said.
Meanwhile, strong winds wreaked havoc in Beijing and parts of northern
China on Saturday, causing hundreds of flights to be canceled, attractions to close, and rail lines to be suspended, state media said.
The powerful winds stemmed mainly from a cold vortex system formed over Mongolia that was moving east and south, sweeping across northern China from Friday through the weekend, the China Meteorological Administration said.
“The strongest winds are expected during the daytime of April 12, with wind speeds at some observation stations approaching or even surpassing historical records for the same period since 1951,” the CMA said in a statement.
tariffs would not go any higher in an acknowledgement that almost no imports are possible at the new level.
Trump had reiterated on Thursday that he was looking to do a deal with Xi despite the mounting tensions.
“He’s been a friend of mine for a long period of time. I think that we’ll end up working out something that’s very good for both countries,” he told reporters. But American officials have made it clear they expect Xi to reach out first.
Pressure was growing on Trump, however, as markets continued to fret.
As investors fled the dollar, which is typically considered a key haven currency, Trump attempted to squelch fears on Friday.
“We’re the currency of choice. We’re always going to be... I think the dollar is tremendous,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, after the dollar plunged to its lowest level against the euro in more than three years. AFP
Beijing earlier issued its first orange alert — the second-highest tier — for strong winds in a decade for this weekend.
As of Saturday morning, 413 flights at Beijing’s Capital International Airport had been cancelled, state broadcaster CCTV said.
Train services including the airport’s express subway line and some high-speed rail lines have also been suspended, CCTV added.
Tourist attractions including the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Beijing Zoo, and the Universal Studios theme park were also temporarily closed Saturday.
Almost 300 trees in the Chinese capital had toppled and 19 vehicles had been damaged, CCTV said, adding that no injuries due to the strong winds had been reported in Beijing yet. AFP
The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) is also anticipating over two million land travelers in the coming days, with approximately 165,000 passengers passing through the terminal since April 9, according to spokesperson Jason Salvador.
Trips to Bicol are also fully booked in PITX, but the management assured they have standby units and personnel in case additional buses are needed.
Private operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) has likewise stepped up preparations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to help ensure efficient operations and provide added support throughout the busy travel period.
From April 13 to 20, NAIA is expected to welcome more than 1.18 million passengers—a 14.23 percent increase from last year’s 1.04 million.
Flight movements are also projected to rise, from 6,537 in 2024 to 6,724 this year. Good Friday, April 18, is expected to be the busiest day, with 851 flights, while Tuesday, April 15, will see the lightest traffic at 818 flights—still higher than any single day during Holy Week last year.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines placed all 44 airports under its jurisdiction on heightened alert in anticipation of a projected 7 to 10 percent increase in passenger traffic.
Local airlines are also expecting a large volume of passengers to travel to, from, and within the Philippines during the coming Holy Week period.
The National Capital Region Police Office has also intensified crime prevention efforts and deployed at least 10,000 personnel across Metro Manila in connection with the country’s observance of Lent.
“With Metro Manila preparing for an increased flow of people this Holy Week, we are taking extensive measures to ensure public safety,” NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin said.
Aberin said there will be a strong police presence in churches, bus terminals, airports, seaports, and other crowded places such as shopping malls and other commercial establishments in Metro Manila.
Aside from areas of public convergence, policemen were also tasked to conduct patrols around communities to prevent burglars from entering houses left by families on vacation.
He also reminded travelers to avoid posting photos on social media indicating their location, as various criminal elements, especially members of the so-called “Akyat-Bahay Gang” and “Salisi Gang,” might take advantage of the situation.
However, Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez insisted the slay attempt was an “ambush me” scheme.
“Do not believe somebody like him who has no credibility and is a selfconfessed drug lord,” Gomez said.
“I am still investigating what really transpired and once I have definitive details I will give an interview. For now there are so many flaws to the whole story that we are watching,” he added.
THE International Monetary Fund on Friday approved a new four-year $20 billion bailout for Argentina to support President Javier Milei’s aggressive efforts to revive the fortunes of the Latin American country.
“The program is expected to help catalyze additional official multilateral and bilateral support, and a timely reaccess to international capital markets,” the IMF said in a statement.
The executive board’s decision makes an initial disbursement of $12 billion immediately available to Argentina, with the first review of the program scheduled for June this year.
“Today our Board approved a new program for Argentina in recognition of the impressive progress in stabilizing the economy,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva wrote in a social media post on X shortly after the board’s decision was published.
“It is a vote of confidence in the Government’s determination to advance reforms, foster growth &
deliver higher standards of living for the Argentine people,” she added.
The new agreement marks a big win for Milei, Argentina’s populist self-described “anarcho-capitalist” president, who has built close ties to senior officials in Donald Trump’s orbit, including the billionaire Elon Musk.
It is the 23rd time the IMF has bailed out Argentina since it became a member of the Washington-based institution in 1956.
Minutes before the IMF statement arrived on Friday, the World Bank announced a separate “support package” of measures worth some $12 billion.
The package, which includes commitments from three different World Bank bodies, “is designed to support reforms that continue to attract private investment and further boost the measures being implemented by the national government to promote job creation,” the Bank said in a statement. AFP
Meanwhile, the Department of Education on Saturday underscored that bullying has “no place in schools” as it reaffirmed its push for safe learning spaces for students.
In a statement, the department said it takes every case of bullying “seriously” while conducting swift action and sustained efforts to ensure safe and supportive learning spaces for all.
At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, DepEd Assistant Secretary for Operations Dexter Galban said about 1,314 cases of campus violence had been recorded from Nov. 24, 2022 to April 7, 2025, half of which were committed by a learner. The DepEd said it regularly conducts a comprehensive assessment to ensure child protection committees in schools are active and effective. Starting School Year 2025-2026, the K to 10 curriculum will deepen values formation and integrate anti-bullying lessons into subjects, such as Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC), Values Education, and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, the department said. Students who bully others, meanwhile, will undergo counseling, focused on empathy, accountability, and behavior change.

MANULIFE Philippines, a local unit of global financial services leader Manulife, and Manulife China Bank Life (MCBL), the strategic alliance between Manulife Philippines and China Banking Corporation, have announced the appointment of Amy Gochuico as president and CEO of MCBL, effective April 1, 2025. Gochuico brings over 30 years of insurance and leadership experience across various Asian markets and organizations, with two decades focused on bancassurance.
As MCBL president and CEO, she will oversee partnership management, drive growth, strengthen the distribution team, manage key business risks, and ensure quality outcomes that reinforce Manulife

Prior to her new role, she served as chief bancassurance officer of Manulife Indonesia since 2021, where she led the Bancassurance channel’s growth and profitability.
“We’re excited to welcome Amy back to the Philippines as part of Manulife’s executive committee. During her time at Manulife Indonesia, she ensured sustainable and consistent growth for the company’s bancassurance business to meet its longterm commitments,” said Manulife Philippines president and CEO Rahul Hora.
Friends and family constantly encouraged her to turn her delicious pulutan (finger food) into something more—but it took time and courage for her to see its full potential.
“At first, I didn’t really take it seriously,” Santillan says with a laugh. “People would say, ‘You should be selling this!’ but I thought they were just being nice. I never imagined it would grow into something this big.”
Founded in 2009, what began as a home-based operation evolved into Pat & Kat Pork Chicharon, named affectionately after two of her children.
The venture steadily grew, largely by word of mouth, with early batches of chicharon shared among friends, relatives and community members.
The secret? A unique flavor profile and toptier quality made it stand out even in a province known for its culinary traditions.
By the time the pandemic hit, Pat & Kat had already carved out a solid reputation in Cavite. But like many small businesses, it faced supply chain disruptions and rising nstead of scaling back, Santillan and her team used the opportunity to diversify.
“We had to think on our feet. Meat prices were going up, suppliers were harder to reach—so we asked ourselves, ‘Ano pa ba ang puwedeng i-offer na masarap at panalo pa rin?’ That’s when Crispy Pata came in,” Santillan says.
Initially introduced through social media, the Crispy Pata—offered in both ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook formats—became a runaway hit. Loyal customers embraced the new product, and it became a signature item in its own right, complementing the original chicharon.
In 2022, Pat & Kat reached a major milestone with the opening of its first physical food-to-go
store in Poblacion IV, Tanza, through its exclusive distributor, Lucky Food Services. This marked a turning point for the brand, as two more branches soon followed: one along Centennial Road in Kawit and another in the busy Pasig-Rotonda area of Metro Manila.
“That first store in Tanza, it really made everything feel official. Before that, it was mostly online or orders from friends. Having a real shop gave us visibility and more confidence to push forward,” Santillan said.
Around the same time, Santillan was invited by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Tanza Negosyo Center to join the Kapatid Mentor Me–Money Market Encounter (KMME-MME) Program. Designed to support micro and small enterprises, the program provided mentorship, skills training, and networking opportunities. Through it, Santillan gained critical insights into operations, financial management, and business scalability.
“I used to run everything based on gut feel,” she admitted. “But through the program, I learned how to organize the business better, set goals, and really plan for growth. The mentoring helped me see the bigger picture.”
Her business improvement plan earned recognition as one of the program’s best, and the connections she formed continue to play a vital role in her entrepreneurial journey.
Today, Pat & Kat products are found not just across Cavite but in pasalubong shops, restaurants, private offices in nearby provinces, and balikbayan boxes bound for overseas.
The business has gone from strength to strength, thanks to its consistent flavor, quality, and authentic family-driven roots. Looking ahead, Santillan has ambitious plans to expand into dine-in offerings, pursue franchising opportunities, and eventually tap the international market.
“The goal now is to go global. There are so many Filipinos abroad who miss the taste of home. If we can bring a bit of Cavite to them through our products, then that’s something really special,” she disclosed.
Pat & Kat Pork Chicharon continues to rise—proof that passion when paired with perseverance, can transform even the simplest dish into a celebrated brand.

OR 19-year-old Alex Eala, defeating top 10 players like Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys still feels surreal.
She admitted she never imagined overcoming such formidable opponents, aware of the challenge they present. Yet, against the odds, she managed to pull o the upsets.
“It’s a bit hard to swallow, knowing that you’ve beaten a lot of really good players— because they’re such big wins,” Eala shared, re ecting on her breakthrough performance at the Miami Open.
Now riding a wave of momentum, Eala is preparing for a string of European tournaments leading up to her first-ever main draw appearance at the professional level in Roland Garros. Her recent successes
By Alona Cochon
have propelled her to a career-high WTA ranking of No. 73.
“I’m super proud of myself to say that I’ve beaten top 5 players. It’s very surreal for me,” she said.
Eala’s meteoric rise has also sparked dreams beyond the tour. With her surge in the rankings and impressive run in Miami, representing the Philippines in the 2028 Paris Olympics has now become a real aspiration.
“I think the Olympics is such a big event. It’s definitely one of my goals to represent the country there—hopefully in 2028,” she said.
Next on her schedule is the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal from April 14 to 20, followed by the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain from April 22 to May 4.
Although Eala missed the previous Olympics, she draws inspiration from fellow Filipino athletes who have represented the country with pride.
“I wasn’t there at the Paris Olympics, but I’m happy to see Filipinos excel—like Carlos Yulo. He
was a big inspiration for the country,” she added. Clay has been a successful surface for Eala since her junior days. In 2021, she teamed up with Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva to win the Roland-Garros girls’ doubles title against Amarissa Toth and Hungary’s Maria Bondarenko—her second Grand Slam crown. Before that, she captured the 2020 Australian Open junior doubles title with Indonesia’s Priska Nugroho.
In 2022, Eala claimed her first Grand Slam singles title by defeating Lucie Havlickova of the Czech Republic at the US Open junior girls’ event.
“I’m excited for the Grand Slams ahead, especially Roland-Garros. I know I’ll be in the main draw, so I’m really looking forward to it,” said Eala.
The French Open is set to run from May 25 to June 8, with top stars like world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gau , and Madison Keys expected to compete.
NEARLY 20 years after the first Filipino stood atop Mt. Everest, a new generation of adventurers is ready to rise to the challenge.
On April 14, 2025, mountaineers Jeno Panganiban and Miguel Mapalad will set out on the Mt. Everest Expedition 2025, aiming to once again raise the Philippine flag on the world’s highest peak.
Driven by passion, perseverance, and a deep reverence for nature, the duo’s mission extends beyond personal ambition. Their climb is a tribute to the pioneers who paved the way and a powerful call to inspire future generations of Filipino explorers. It is both a journey and a statement: that Filipino mountaineers deserve their place on the global stage.
The expedition is spearheaded by the Philippine 14 Peaks Expedition Team, an elite group committed to conquering all 14 of the world’s highest mountains—each towering above 8,000 meters. The team marked its first milestone with the successful summit of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters) in October 2024. With Everest now in their sights, they also plan to tackle Mt. Cho Oyu and Mt. Lhotse later this year.
For 29-year-old Jeno Panganiban, the journey began during his college years, when a spontaneous hike with friends sparked a lifelong passion. A graduate of De La Salle University and now a successful entrepreneur managing a wholesale fruit and vegetable business, Panganiban has scaled peaks across Asia, including Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. Fuji (Japan), Mt. Kinabalu (Malaysia), and Mt. Yushan (Taiwan). His climbing partner, Miguel Mapalad, 42, rst stepped into the world of mountaineering in 1999 during a church Bible study hike to Mt. Cristobal in Quezon. A native of San Juan City, Mapalad has since braved icy, high-altitude terrains across Nepal, Africa, and South America. Among his most notable climbs is Mt. Ama Dablam—one of the most technical peaks in the Himalayas. Climbing Everest, which towers at 8,848 meters, is a monumental undertaking. It demands more than just physical stamina—it requires immense mental strength, strategic preparation, and the courage to endure life-threatening extremes. But for Panganiban and Mapalad, the risks are part of the dream. As they begin their ascent, they carry not only their own hopes and aspirations, but the pride of a nation that continues to dream big. Their every step will echo with the spirit of Filipino resilience and the desire to reach new heights—literally and guratively. The summit awaits—and so does history.

CATS are obligate carnivores, which means their bodies are specifically designed to derive most of their nutrition from meat. Unlike humans, they do not require fruits or vegetables to maintain good health. Offering your cat occasional treats in the form of fruits can be a healthy and enjoyable way to diversify their diet.
“Cats might be curious about what you're eating, including fruit, but not all fruits are safe for them. Small bits of apple (without seeds), bananas, or strawberries can be occasional treats that offer fiber and vitamins,” said Dr. Samantha Harton in “Which Fruits Can Cats Eat?” published in the Paws and Claws website.
“These should be given in tiny portions, as cats don’t digest sugar well and don’t need fruit in their diet,” added Dr. Harton.
Dr. Harton said these fruits are safe for cats:
Blueberries
Blueberries are one of the best fruits for cats. They are easy to digest, and packed with antioxidants that can support your cat's immune system and overall health. Blueberries also contain a moderate amount of fiber, which can help with digestion. Rinse them thoroughly and serve them whole or cut them into smaller pieces if your cat is not used to whole fruits.
Strawberries
Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and fiber, and can thus help support your cat’s immune system, improve digestion, and even aid in hydration due to their high water content. Give strawberries sparingly as they are slightly higher in sugar than other fruits. Wash them well and remove the green tops. You can cut the strawberries into small, bite-sized pieces.
Watermelon
Watermelon is a hydrating and refreshing fruit, making it an excellent choice for summer months. Its high water content is good for cats who do not drink enough water. Wa-
termelon also contains vitamins A and C, both of which are important for maintaining healthy skin, eyes, and immune function. Remove the seeds and rind. Cut the flesh into small pieces.
Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe is another hydrating fruit due to its high water content. It is also rich in vitamins A and C. As it contains fiber, cantaloupe can aid in digestion. Remove the seeds and rind before cutting it into small pieces.
Bananas
Bananas are safe for cats to eat, though they should only be offered as an occasional treat due to their higher sugar content. Bananas are rich in potassium, which is beneficial for maintaining heart and muscle health. For overweight or diabetic cats, this should be given less frequently.
Peel the fruit and cut it into small slices.
Apples (Without Seeds)
Apples contain fiber, vitamin C, and various
antioxidants. Apples can promote good diges tive health and provide a crunchy texture that many cats enjoy.
Remove the seeds before offering them, as apple seeds contain cyanide, which is toxic to both cats and humans. Wash them thoroughly, remove the seeds, and slice them into small pieces.
Pineapple
Pineapple is high in vitamin C, manganese, and bromelain, which is an enzyme that may help with digestion. While pineapple can provide several health benefits, its high sugar content means that it should only be given occasionally.
Peel the fruit, remove any tough parts, and cut it into small pieces.
Pears are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Like apples, pears should have their seeds removed before being offered to your cat. The soft flesh of pears is easy
for cats to digest and can make for a tasty and hydrating treat. Wash the pear thoroughly, remove the seeds, and cut the fruit into small pieces.
Fruits to Avoid
While many fruits are safe for cats, there are a few that should be avoided entirely. Grapes and raisins, for instance, can be toxic to cats and can lead to kidney failure. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and limes should also be avoided, as they can cause digestive upset and toxicity in cats.

SERVICE dogs are highly trained canines that assist individuals with disabilities in navigating the world. They provide crucial support, enhancing independence and quality of life. These remarkable animals undergo rigorous training to perform specific tasks tailored to their handler's needs.
What Makes a Service Dog?
As mentioned in the article "Types of Service Dogs" by PetMD, service dogs are distinct from emotional support animals or therapy dogs. They are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities, making them invaluable partners in everyday life. These tasks are not simply tricks; they are carefully chosen and trained to meet the unique needs of each handler. For example, service dogs for the visually impaired, often called "seeing eye" dogs, are trained to guide their handlers safely through
obstacles and navigate public spaces. They act as an extension of their handler's senses, allowing them to move with confidence and independence.
Hearing dogs are trained to alert their handlers to specific sounds, such as doorbells, alarms, or even a baby's cry. This allows individuals with hearing impairments to stay informed and safe in their environment.
Service dogs can also provide physical assistance for individuals with mobility issues. They can retrieve dropped items, open doors, or even pull wheelchairs, making everyday tasks easier and more manageable.
Beyond physical assistance, service dogs can be trained to assist with medical conditions. They can be trained to detect changes in blood sugar levels for individuals with diabetes, alert to seizures, or even provide pressure therapy for individuals with anxiety. These dogs are truly remarkable, offering a lifeline to those who need them most.
The Journey of a Service Dog
The path to becoming a service dog is long and demanding. As described in the article "Ser-
vice Dog Training 101" by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the training process involves a series of stages that ensure the dog is well-prepared to assist individuals with disabilities.
1. Puppy Selection
The journey begins with puppy selection, where potential service dogs are carefully chosen based on several critical factors. These factors include temperament, health, and breed suitability. Breeds commonly selected for service work often include Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, as they tend to possess the necessary traits for training and companionship.
2. Basic Obedience Training
Once a suitable puppy is selected, the next stage is basic obedience training. During this phase, puppies learn essential commands such as sit, stay, and come. This foundational training is crucial, as it establishes a communication system between the dog and its handler, ensuring that the dog can respond reliably to commands.
3. Specialized Training
After mastering basic commands, the dogs
enter the specialized training phase. In this stage, they receive training tailored to perform specific tasks related to their handler's disability. This may include guiding visually impaired individuals, alerting those with hearing impairments, or assisting with mobility challenges.
4. Public Access Training
The final stage of training is public access training. Service dogs must learn to behave appropriately in various public settings, remaining calm and focused even in distracting environments. This training is essential for ensuring that the service dog can accompany its handler in everyday situations, providing support and assistance as needed.

FOR a limited time only, guests can experience the mouthwatering redefinition of fine dining with the dishes of Chef Choi Hyun-seok from the hit cooking series, Culinary Class Wars, at Solaire Resort.
Chef Choi personally prepared his signature dishes at Solaire Resort Entertainment City's Finestra restaurant with an indulgent fivecourse dinner.
His critically acclaimed Sujebi Vongole was among the highlights of the dinner – and he made sure to put garlic this time!
“Definitely with garlic,” he said, referencing his mistake in Culinary Class Wars where he failed to add garlic to his pasta dish that was a fusion of hand-torn Korean noodles with Italian influences.
There was also his famous Jang Trio Steak that featured three kinds of sauces –doenjang made with soybean paste, gochujang or red chili paste and ganchang made with soy sauce.
The dinner started with two amuse-bouches he called “Beans” – made with chickpeas – and “Donut” made with corn topped with caviar.
There was also a hearty seaweed soup served
with hairtail fish and radish, which Chef Choi described as having a very traditional Korean flavor, especially with sesame oil.
And for dessert – a Korean shaved ice with mascarpone, white chocolate, red bean paste, and green tea.
Chef Choi’s signature dishes will be available for a limited time from tomorrow (Monday, April 14) until July 6, exclusively at Solaire Resort.
Try the full menu at Waterside in Solaire Re sort Entertainment City and the donut, vongole, and three-sauce steak at Finestra in Solaire Re sort North to relive the extravagance and luxury of Chef Choi’s prowess once more.

RISING actor Rabin Angeles, known for his breakout role as Yuri Hanamitchi in the hit rom-com series Ang Mutya ng Section E, is making it clear that he’s not waiting on a love team to move his career forward.
The 20-year-old actor, who recently landed an endorsement deal as the face of The Green Flavonoid skincare line by The Lab by Blanc Doux, said he’s been deeply focused on building his craft through acting workshops—not chasing overnight stardom.
“I’m doing a lot of workshops to improve my acting skills. I want to learn more, so I can really show what I’m capable of,” Rabin said during the product’s launch event.
While many rising stars in Philippine entertainment often thrive within the comfort and fan appeal of a love team, Rabin is determined to carve out his own path independently.
When asked if he’s open to being paired on-screen, he answered, “It depends. But I want to show people that I can do
to be in a love team,” added Rabin.
Known among his peers and fans for his quiet, grounded demeanor, Rabin said he deliberately avoids focusing too much on social media attention—or negativity.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, he chooses not to dwell on digital buzz, preferring instead to immerse himself in reallife learning experiences.
“I don’t really think about it. The more I don’t give attention on what other people say, the more I can focus on what I do,” he continued.
Rabin is refreshingly humble about fame. Despite his growing popularity, he admitted fame isn’t something he actively chases.
“I don’t feel like I’m famous. I don’t want to think that I’m famous because I’m still far from my goal,” explained Rabin. His career path has certainly not been without obstacles. Before finally landing his pivotal role in Ang Mutya ng Section E, Rabin shared that he spent long hours commuting from his hometown in Pampanga to Metro Manila for auditions and training.
The work was tough—going through workshops, facing many rejections, and even going a whole year without any projects.
He then described the experience as exhausting and frustrating at times, but emphasized that he learned valuable lessons about persistence and not giving up.
Now that he has a dedicated fanbase and numerous projects in the works, Rabin is finally witnessing the rewards of his hard
However, he remains modest, constantly reminding himself of his journey and the people who supported him along the way.
“This is what God chose for me. What I think about is how I can make the people who support me happy,” Rabin stated.

years of dealing with fame, missed opportunities, and personal development, Kiko Estrada says that he’s ready to give showbiz another serious try—and this time, he really means it.
In a sideline interview during the press conference for the finale of his action-drama series Lumuhod Ka sa , Kiko reflected on his journey from a once-promising matinee idol to a man now grounded by experience and focused on doing the work.
“I cherish the responsibility given to me now. So, I will do my best and keep doing my best,” said Kiko.
“I didn’t appreciate my position before. I took it for granted. But now, I’m more mature. I’m so blessed that I worked hard for it—a decade before it was given—so that I could appreciate it,”
Currently in its final three weeks on air, Lumuhod Ka sa Lupa has become a major turning point for Kiko, who describes it as both a challenge and a training ground for something even more personal: Totoy Bato, his next project.
The upcoming series will see the actor stepping into a reimagined version of the classic
action story originally headlined by Fernando Poe Jr. His grandfather, the late Paquito Diaz, was part of the original film’s cast—which adds emotional depth to Kiko’s new character.
“The next one, it’s really close to my heart.
It’s like Lumuhod Ka sa Lupa is a training for the next series. It’s my first project that my grandfather was once involved with. This is the one I really want to dedicate my life to,” Kiko explained.
Kiko has already begun training for Totoy Bato, immersing himself in boxing and cycling to physically prepare. But more than the physical demands, the actor says this transformation is about maturity and purpose.
“I’m trying to be the guy I should’ve been when I was a kid. At the end of the day, I just wanna be a good guy. A man that will do right and earn respect,” he continued.
While remaining tight-lipped on plot details, Kiko confirmed the series aims to deliver the cinematic quality of a full-length film.
He also acknowledged the pressure to deliver—especially with a legacy name like Totoy Bato and a renewed spotlight on his career— but said he’s more than ready for the weight.
“Pressure makes diamonds. You cannot have diamonds if there’s no pressure,” he said.

IT STARTED with a cool ocean breeze and the hush of waves crashing on a private beach. But instead of reaching for a beach towel or tropical cocktail, I was headed to a plenary session inside the sleek, fully equipped Boracay Newcoast Convention Center (BNCC).
This is the new Boracay—where leisure and productivity live side by side.
Once known solely for its powdery white sand and vibrant nightlife, Boracay is quickly emerging as one of the country’s most promising destinations for MICE—meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions. Leading that shift is Boracay Newcoast, an integrated estate tucked away on the northeastern coast of the island, far enough from the White Beach crowds but close enough to everything else.
As I walked into the BNCC, I couldn’t help but look up. Ninemeter-high ceilings gave the entire venue an airy, flexible feel— perfect for elaborate staging or minimalist setups, depending on the event. Inside, the fully air-conditioned center was fitted with everything from state-of-the-art AV equipment to strong Wi-Fi, all
Place Mall of Asia is offering families a space-themed Easter celebration this April, with a hotel room promotion, Easter Sunday buffet, and egg hunt event aimed at both leisure travelers and children. Running from April 14 to 20, the hotel’s Holy Week Room Offer includes breakfast for two and two tickets to its Easter event. The promo is open

banquet-style, making it ideal for mid-to-large scale conferences, conventions, or even weddings.
And the best part? It’s all walkable. My hotel room at the Savoy Hotel Boracay was just minutes away. The Belmont Hotel Boracay, another option within the township, is also steps from the convention center. It’s easy to imagine delegates starting their mornings with a quiet stroll along Newcoast’s exclusive
Located in Pasay City near the SM Mall of Asia complex, Lanson Place is positioning itself as a convenient destination for family celebrations this Easter, offering a mix of hotel stays, themed dining, and entertainment.
Lanson Place Mall of Asia is part of Lanson Place Hospitality Management Limited, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Wing Tai Properties Limited (HKEx: 369). The group operates properties in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Melbourne.
Tucked away from the crowds of White Beach, Boracay Newcoast’s Private Cove offers a more exclusive slice of paradise
beach before slipping into business mode.
“Our Savoy Hotel Boracay and Belmont Hotel Boracay have hosted several MICE groups starting 2023, which is a very encouraging sign for the recovery of the island,” said Cleofe Albiso, managing director of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts (MHR), which operates the two hotels. “Our location offers something different—events that combine work with wellness and inspiration from nature.”
And the demand is real. From pharmaceutical conventions and the ASEAN Digital Ministers Meeting to the Prosecutors League of the Philippines, more groups are choosing Boracay not just as a backdrop for business but as a strategic venue for meaningful gatherings.
Inside the hotels, smaller function rooms cater to breakouts or executive meetings, while outdoor venues across the 150-hectare property give planners room to get creative. Think themed beach banquets, sunset acoustic sessions, or high-energy DJ nights after a day of talks. MHR’s culinary team handles banquet needs with precision, offering Halalcertified options and locally inspired menus that can be customized to suit every event.
“The possibilities here are endless,” said Maia Israel, area general manager for Boracay Newcoast and president of the Boracay MICE Alliance. “We designed these spaces— indoor and outdoor—to inspire people to connect in more meaningful ways. Business events should be both productive and memorable.”
She’s right. During my stay, I saw the range firsthand: small seminars inside function rooms at the Savoy, delegates lounging by the pool post-meeting, and themed dinners under the stars complete with fire dances and food carts. It was business but elevated.
And with the upcoming opening of Chancellor Hotel Boracay, the township will soon have over 1,500 rooms ready to accommodate large groups. Pair that with Newcoast’s quiet beaches, Muslim-friendly facilities, and growing list of activities, and it’s easy to see why this estate is positioning itself as a serious MICE contender.
Boracay will always be Boracay—sun-soaked, postcardpretty, and full of life. But in Boracay Newcoast, business travelers are discovering a more grounded, thoughtful version of the island. One where meetings don’t end with a handshake in a ballroom, but with your feet in the sand and the ocean within reach.
Now that’s how you do business on an island.
