Exclusive Interview with Peter Dean Jack and the Beanstalk is at the Rudolf Steiner School Theatre in Kings Langley and stars Lauren Platt (CBBC presenter and X Factor star), Rhianna Merralls (CBBCs Millie Inbetween), Peter Dean (EastEnders and Real Marigold Hotel), Ernie Almond (local radio legend), TV presenter Gem Allen and Britain’s best dame Rob Forknall. The Sticks caught up with Eastenders Legend Peter Dean (PD) who is playing Fleshcreep during Rehearsals for Jack and the Beanstalk Can you remember how many pantos you have done? I think it is around 20 Do you remember your first one? It was King Rat in Dick Whittington down at Bexhill, Kent What do you think you will bring to your role this year? I shall bring myself of course, I always play the baddie, but I don’t like to frighten the children too much as parents have spent good money to come and see it and if they start screaming and they have to take them outside and maybe miss some of the first half or sometime won’t came back at all so I always play him with a weakness I am not a lover of actors who play him too nasty. It is very easy to frighten children, I don’t play him weak though, like when I play King Rat and the cat comes on after me I always start sneezing like I am allergic to cats, that sort of thing. The children pick it up very quickly. I think Children know where to boo and hiss. This is old fashioned panto like Chris’s (Chris Law, producer) always are, it has that lovely pie slapping and all that sort of thing. The children have seen all the panto’s with spacemen and rocket ships this is a real old fashioned traditional panto Do a panto is a busy time with 2 shows a day do you have a tip or routine you use to keep well? I don’t drink, but I enjoy a nice cold drink but nothing special might have a throat sweet. What does panto mean to you? It always brings me back happy memories of going to the panto with my mother and father, when I was young they only opened on Boxing Day, now they start earlier and finish early , some used to go on about mid May, the big panto’s What does Christmas mean to you? I guess because I have lost both my parents like a lot of people, but I have grandchildren. I always light a candle in front of my mothers, fathers and grandmothers photo. I have never been one for going out New Years Eve, I think it is a very sad time, well for me it is as I always think of people I have lost. The religious side of Christmas I enjoy and everybody is happy for a day.

4

What will you be doing this Christmas day? I have a lady friend so I will go over there and give her a surprise gift all wrapped up and I love listening to Jazz to relax so a bit of Billy Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald, just lay on sofa and unwind. What are you hoping for as a Christmas present this year? Not hoping for anything special a gift is a gift, I am a good actor so I can act surprised even if I don’t like it or do. The one thing I would like to do is phone a special phone number to hear my dad pick the phone up and he would say “Hello boy, do you want to talk to your mum”. Dads never want to talk to you do they? What is the best present you have ever received? You are going to laugh it was given to me by my grandmother and I guess it will be out of date now and in those days you had to be 21 then, but she brought me a gold colibri lighter, which I lost about 3 weeks after and I kept it a secret all those years till she passed away. And what was the worse? I can’t answer that, if someone has taken the time to buy it and wrap it, that’s good enough for me. What does 2019 have in store for you? Well I hope to keep breathing; my grandmother’s gravestone is getting a bit grubby so I think I will get a new one and I have one or two things lined up to do in the New Year, 2 small films and a fringe theatre thing too. What is your favourite Christmas song? Any song by Nat King Cole, he has a Christmas voice if you know what I mean. Christmas morning my mum always put on Nat King Cole singing Christmas songs.

Here are Ten Christmas HR Questions & Answers that we get asked regularly: 1 – Should Employers prepare for the festive season? Managers should familiarise themselves with their employer’s policy on Christmas parties or work-related social events. Additionally, employers should consider the option of issuing a statement to employees in advance of a Christmas party or similar work-related event. This statement can remind employees of conduct matters, including the dangers of excess alcohol consumption, and behaviours that could be viewed as harassment. 2 – Do employers really need a policy on workplace social events? Yes. Employers should maintain a policy because they have a duty of care towards staff, and as a matter of good practice. The Equality Act 2010 makes employers liable for acts of discrimination, harassment and victimisation carried out by their employees in the course of employment, unless they can show that they took reasonable steps to prevent such acts. 3 – Is and employer responsible for what happens at a Christmas or New Year’s eve party? It is prudent to assume that an employer will be liable. Legislation refers to the term “in the course of employment”. 4 – Can employees be disciplined for misconduct after a Christmas / New Year’s eve party? Yes, if the incident is sufficiently closely connected to work to have had an impact on the working situation. For further information click here 5 – Is it ok to offer a free bar at a Christmas / New Year’s eve party?A free bar will undoubtedly be a morale booster for staff, but employers need to be aware of the dangers of providing an unlimited free bar. 6 – Do Christmas festivities discriminate against those of other religions? It is unlikely that holding a Christmas party would in itself be seen as religious discrimination because generally these parties are more about having a staff gettogether and boosting morale than celebrating religion. Employers should keep a policy on religious observance during working hours and be supportive towards employees whose religious festivals fall at different times of the year 7 – Can an employee insist on taking holidays during the Christmas period? No. In the absence of an agreement to the contrary, workers must give notice equal to twice the length of the holiday that they wish to take. The employer can then give counter notice requiring that the leave not be taken, so long as this counter notice is equivalent to the length of the holiday requested,

6

and the worker is not prevented from taking the leave to which he or she is entitled in that holiday year. Where an employee has accrued untaken leave and gives reasonable notice to the employer to take the leave, the employer must have valid business reasons for refusing the employee’s request to take leave. Where an employee insists on taking leave and does so without approval, the employer should approach the issue sensibly and be careful not to impose a disproportionate penalty on the employee. 8 – What if an employee comes to work late or not at all the day after the Christmas party? An employer can make deductions from employees’ pay if they turn up for work late the morning after the company Christmas party as long as the right to make deductions from wages for unauthorised absence is reserved in the employment contract. If disciplinary action is to be taken for lateness or non-attendance after the Christmas party, employers should ensure that staff are informed that this is a possibility in the disciplinary policy. Where an employee does not attend due to illness, the employer should follow its attendance management policy and procedures. 9 – Can employers compel their employees to work bank holidays? There is no statutory right to time off during bank holidays. This depends on the contractual arrangements regarding bank holiday working. Further, there is no statutory requirement to pay staff extra for bank holiday working, but employers should observe contractual terms or custom and practice regarding pay rates. 10 – What if a Christian employee refuses to work on Christmas bank holidays? Employers should be aware of their obligations under the Equality Act 2010, which protects workers against direct and indirect discrimination because of their religion. While employees do not have the explicit right to time off for religious observance, a refusal to grant Christian employees time off for any of the bank holidays with religious significance could amount to indirect religious discrimination. YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS

Two helpings of sprouts on Christmas Day ?.......There is a better way ! Dealing with the end of a marriage or relationship can be one of the most stressful times of your life, particularly if there are children to consider. Not only is there the rollercoaster ride of emotions to deal with, there can be financial pressures – even urgent ones if a partner moves out without ensuring you are left with sufficient income to cover all the household bills and mortgage. Christmas time can be particularly tricky as most parents want to have their children with them for that “special day” on 25th December. In which case, parents often decide to divide the day up between them. If there is no thought put into the practicalities of this, it can leave children with a ruined day. They will usually have to leave behind new toys they have just opened at one house, and potentially have to sit through two Christmas dinners. There is no correct approach to take, but whatever you decide, spare a thought for the children themselves and what they might like. Many people in this day and age are reluctant to seek formal legal advice as they presume this will be hugely expensive and force the issues to end up being argued out in court. It doesn’t have to be that way and using the Collaborative Approach helps couples resolve issues between them in a dignified and cost-effective manner. So what is Collaborative Law ? • Each of you instructs a specialist family lawyer, who has been trained in resolving matters using the collaborative approach • Everything is discussed and negotiated at round table meetings – at times and places chosen by you • An Agreement is signed by everyone at the outset – to confirm they will not bring up the past, will be open and honest during the process, and will not issue court proceedings (other than by consent) • The process works at your speed – with meetings arranged every week or month, or whenever you want • It can be used to discuss children or financial issues, or both • Other experts can be brought into the meetings if needed – Financial Neutrals to help with discussing investments and pensions and/or Family Consultants to help with the emotional impact of the relationship breakdown The Collaborative Process allows you to take control of your situation and to find a reasonable and fair outcome that works for everyone. If the process breaks down, both of you have to instruct new lawyers, and any “offers” are withdrawn. However, it is this extra bit of pressure which makes the approach so effective and gives positive outcomes. If you would like any more information on the Collaborative Approach, or any other area of family law please contact me: amanda.thurston@curwens.co.uk. Curwens have offices in Royston, Hoddesdon and Enfield.

Looking for a unique Christmas gift? Why not give a piece of original art By Sharon Struckman www.whatishootieat.co.uk

Michael Salt is a well-established professional Artist, born in Stourbridge in 1955, he studied at Stourbridge School of Art, after studying he left Stourbridge to work as a studio technician spending time in Wales and Jersey. Mike returned to the Midlands to concentrate on his painting, working with most media but principally oils. He tries to use colour and light to create an atmosphere or mood rather than for his painting to look like a recording. Love of the countryside meant landscape painting became his first love, especially if water was involved, often giving his paintings the mood and light that the English countryside is famous for. You will find many local scenes from around Worcestershire, along with other neighbouring counties. Water scenes play a significant part in his work, and he focuses on the reflections and movements of this element. You will not only find scenes from around the waterways of Worcestershire, but also many dramatic Seascapes from around the country. Mike does a large amount of commission work, paintings of a favourite scene or a portrait of a loved one. Another area that Mike is becoming known for are, his one to one lessons at the studio at Jinney Ring Craft Centre and sometimes in Datchworth, these are becoming increasingly popular, with many of his students returning again and again. Mikes realistic portraits capture the characteristics of the person or pet. He is happy to create paintings to your requirements. Take a look around this site and maybe you will find something that already matches your taste or inspires you to work with me on a new creation. He takes commissions that are a beautiful and unique memory that lasts for a lifetime. These can be painted especially for you or as a gift for a loved one. Make a personal statement with one of his works in the reception area or maybe in a meeting room. You can see and buy his work at www.mardleyburygallery.co.uk in Datchworth or go to his website http://michaelsaltartist.wixsite.com/michaelsalt or contact him on Facebook.

Swapping Sherwood Forest for Milton Keynes Theatre Shane Richie Is Robin Hood

Sherwood Forest’s notorious outlaw Robin Hood made his appearance at Milton Keynes Theatre for a spot of target practice ahead of this year’s arrow-shooting panto spectacular, Robin Hood.

26

Television, recording, musical theatre and pantomime star Shane Richie will lead the cast in this year’s family pantomime, Robin Hood from Saturday 8 December – Sunday 13 January. Swapping the Queen Vic for Sherwood Forest and starring as the heroic outlaw Robin Hood, Shane says: ‘Panto is a great theatrical experience and it’s nothing like you’ll ever see again. Robin is the romantic lead, a loveable rogue. He’s a bit of a loser, a bit of a winner. And the great part about doing this is that it’s different every show! ‘I said I wasn’t going to do panto for a while but then Milton Keynes said: “Come on! Bring Robin Hood to us!” I said: “OK, Milton Keynes, I’ll do it. I’ll do three weeks.” “Do Five!” they shouted. “Alright” I shouted back, “I’ll do five weeks for ya ‘cos I love ya!’ Having established himself as one of the nation’s favourite soap stars, Shane has won numerous awards and millions of fans for his portrayal of Albert Square’s loveable landlord Alfie Moon in EastEnders. Book Review – The Perfect Lie by Adam Croft What if you were framed for a murder you didn’t commit? Amy Walker lives the perfect family life with her husband and two young sons. Until a knock at the door turns their lives upside down. It’s the police. Her father-in-law is dead and they’re arresting her for his murder. The evidence against her is overwhelming. Forensics and witnesses place her at the scene. But there’s only one problem: She didn’t do it. With her family destroyed and a murder sentence looming, Amy must discover who murdered her father-in-law — and why they’re so hell-bent on framing her as the killer. Review – Adam never fails to deliver in his books, could this be one of the thrillers of the year? It has more twists and turns in the plot than a rollercoaster and leaves you guessing right till the last page, how things will turn out. Adam’s writing gets better with every book with amazing plots and believable characters cannot wait to read the next one!!!! Following his 2015 worldwide bestseller Her Last Tomorrow, his psychological thrillers were bought by Thomas & Mercer, an imprint of Amazon Publishing. Prior to the Amazon deal, Her Last Tomorrow sold more than 150,000 copies across all platforms and became one of the bestselling books of the year, reaching the top 10 in the overall Amazon Kindle chart and peaking at number 12 in the combined paperback fiction and non-fiction chart.

The new edition of Her Last Tomorrow also reached storewide number 1 in Australia over Christmas 2016. During the summer of 2016, two of Adam’s books hit the USA Today bestseller list only weeks apart, making them two of the most-purchased books in the United States over the summer. In February 2017, Only The Truth became a worldwide bestseller, reaching storewide number 1 at both Amazon US and Amazon UK, making it the bestselling book in the world at that moment in time. The same day, Amazon’s overall Author Rankings placed Adam as the most widely read author in the world, with J.K. Rowling in second place. Adam has been featured on BBC television, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live, the BBC World Service, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, The Bookseller and a number of other news and media outlets. In March 2018, Adam was conferred as an Honorary Doctor of Arts, the highest academic qualification in the UK, by the University of Bedfordshire in recognition of his achievements.
