Exclusive Interview with Singer /Actor Antony Costa He is best known as a member of the boy band Blue along with Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe. Born in Edgware, North London, Costa attended Hendon School in Barnet, also in North West London. His father is Greek Cypriot and his mother is Jewish. He attended the American Academy School in Larnaca before moving back to England. He has a sister Natalie and a brother Louis who appeared on The X Factor in September 2011 and who was also in a pop band called The Chase with former S Club 8 member Jay Asforis.

Before Blue you were an actor as a child? Yes, I started out as a child actor in programmes like Grange Hill and a BBC comedy back in the day called “Chalk” so I have done the rounds you could say. When I was young, a bit like now, I was quite a cheeky chap and I never had a pushy mum or dad you see, they just let me do my thing. How did Blue get together? Not heard that question for ages but we were all mates. We all knew each other on the audition circuit. I meet Duncan at various auditions, same with Lee as well and we decided to form a band and Blue was born so to speak and Simon was living with Lee at the time, after coming down from Manchester. How did the name Blue come about? Do you know I can’t actually remember, it was so long ago, at the time Pink was out and so were Simply Red, there was lots of colours used in terms of bands and singers so we thought what about Blue and that was it. You have now branched out into Panto and acting again. Yes, which is my passion as I said earlier I started out as an actor and singing come secondary to me. It is nice to get back on that stage this Christmas and perform to the people of Dunstable and the surrounding area. In 2006 I was in Willy Russell’s “Blood Brothers” which is an emotional show and we did it 8 times a week. I found it emotionally draining but you have to play these parts to appreciate it. Mr Bill Kenwright gave me the opportunity after I went for an audition and he liked what he saw and offered me the role. It was my favourite show when I was growing up so to be on that stage performing as Mickey was a dream come true. It is a great story of two brothers growing up in Liverpool and their relationship with their mother. Blue entered 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf, Germany with the song "I Can" coming in 11th place with 100 points. What was that like? We got an offer from the BBC; they asked us if we wanted to represent the UK and at that time me and the boys were in talks about getting back together to do an album and stuff

4

and it sort of went hand in hand really. You can’t get a bigger audience than Eurovision with I believe 125 million people watching it so what better way to show people across Europe that Blue are back. From that, our song “I Can” went top ten around Europe so it was a really good thing to do and we were proud to represent the country even though we did not win it, in fact we did not set out to win it - for us it was all about going out there and doing what we love doing and showing everyone we were back!!! Eurovision is the singing world cup. Germany gave us no points and then the next day it went top ten in Germany, but we were just pleased to do it. It was an honour. It was a lot of hard work to be honest with you. I don’t think we have worked so hard in all our lives, interview after interview which was great, but we were so drained from literally working non stop for two weeks and by show day we was just about knackered. Doing Panto must be tiring, especially when you are doing two shows a day? Yes it is hard work, not perhaps the hardest job for an actor but it is very gruelling and you have got to be on your game, everyday. When you’re in a band you have 3 other members and if you were having a bad day the others would take over and that’s how Blue worked, we had each others back and when you’re on your own and all eyes are on you, you have to be on top of your game. It’s great, I love it though. In June 2006 you posed naked for Cosmopolitan magazine's 10 Years of Naked Male Centrefolds, tell us a bit about that? Yes it was for Testicular Cancer. It was something that is nice to put on your CV. Simon (Webbe) last year did Strictly do you fancy doing that? Love to, apart from the jungle (I‘m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here) that’s my favourite show. You are learning a trade, a new skill every week; you’re not stuck in a house just doing different tasks. One week Samba, next week Rumba, it’s fantastic it keeps you on your toes. Simon loved it, said it was the best thing he had ever done and he done amazing and we were all proud of him. Duncan has been touring with Priscilla; we all do our own thing as well as the group which is a good thing as the music business has changed from all those years ago when we first started; you have got to be able to do other things because at the end of the day we have all got bills to pay and families to feed. What are your plans for 2016? We have a few special gigs planned as it will be 15 years of Blue then, personally for me I have a few things in the pipeline as well - a few acting things here and there, just want to keep working, doing what I am doing and enjoying it. Is there a part you would like to play? I would love to do a soap, you ask any actor they would like to do one of those. It is regular, you are on peoples screen in there living rooms and it is nice to become a household name. With my accent I guess Eastenders would have to be favourite also Elstree is just down the road from my house and they would not have to pay my travel costs. What does Panto mean to you? For me it is all about putting smiles on people’s faces. This is my 4th panto that I am doing and every year for me it gets better and better and The Magic Beans guys (The producers of Cinderella in Dunstable) know 5

what they are doing, it seems like a great cast of people. I can’t wait to get on that stage and make people smile and enjoy themselves. So leave your troubles at home and come and see us. Which do you prefer acting or singing? I love them both. If I can do both as in a musical then I am in a good place. If a good acting job comes up, if it is gritty or a nice comedy part then I would love to do it and what to do as many things as I can as life is not a dress rehearsal. What will you be doing on Christmas day? I am going to be probably up at 5.30am because that’s when my little one wakes up, opening presents, bless her she won’t have a clue what is going on, she will just be playing with wrapping paper - and just spend the day with the family really. What is the best Christmas present you have ever received? I don’t know really, I don’t get that many presents as it is all about the kids but the best present I have ever had is the birth of my daughter, that’s a wonderful present but a very expensive present. How about a Christmas present you wished you had not got? Yes of course all those doggy Christmas jumpers that your Nan knitted or got you and then you have that fake smile on your face and say it’s really nice, normally 2 sizes to big or small. Is there a gift you would like this Christmas? Do you know what, I have my health and I am happy and that’s the best gift that anyone could have really. There are so many people out there not as fortunate as us, no families and living on the streets, that really upsets me. Do you have any hobbies? I am really in to football so I go to watch my beloved Spurs when I can and I am proud to be a Tottenham fan. Is there anyone you would like to work /perform with? Yes George Michael, I admired him growing up and loved everything he did.

Telling a Colleague They Smell is the Hardest Workplace Conversation

This article reminded me of the many times that I have advised clients on how to deal with this very difficult issue. In my hospitality days I faced this very issue with an employee who continually came to work smelling of a strong body odour. Despite mentioning it numerous times, nothing changed. Through talking to him in great detail we identified the real reasons that this was happening and the mitigating circumstances he was experiencing at home. We put an action plan together which involved him being able to: • • •

Shower in our hotel Wash his clothes using our washing facilities Purchase a can of deodorant that he could keep in his locker at work

Eventually after six months his personal circumstances improved and he was able to fulfil these requirements at home. We had supported and retained a valued member of the team Having to explain to a co-worker that they smell is the most difficult and awkward workplace scenario imaginable, according to new research. The study, conducted by healthcare brand Balance ActivTM and Cardiff University, found it is a more awkward topic to raise compared with inappropriate clothing, tardiness or even substandard work. Plus - sweaty odours were found to be the most annoying smells in the office, ahead of smelly feet, strong smelling food and bad breath. The research also found that 51% of employees have no idea how to tell someone they need to address the way they smell. Klaer Brooker, Group Head of HR Transformation at Computacenter, gave her advice on how HR should handle such a delicate situation.

12

She said: “Putting yourself in the individual’s shoes is the key for any feedback. As managers, leaders and HR it’s our role to ensure we do this in the best way possible, treating such a situation with the privacy, empathy and discretion it needs. “It is important to treat people as individuals and not make assumptions as to why, for example has something changed in their personal life that may be affecting them? That being said, when having the conversation, being open and honest but supportive will foster the right environment to gain acceptance and commitment to actions. “Seeking advice and support from HR can also give comfort, ensuring you are prepared and set the right tone to achieve the best outcome.” The survey also found that some of us resort to bizarre methods to prevent unwanted smells at work. 11% of men admitting they've borrowed their partner's perfume after forgetting to put on deodorant. One in 20 women have used air freshner when forgetting their deodorant or perfume. When it comes to addressing the issue, just 12% have confronted a workmate directly, whilst one in five workers admitted to having subtly left a can of deodorant on their desk. Telling them their clothes are inappropriate came next in a list of awkward topics at four per cent. This was matched by scolding them for not working hard enough and followed closely by confronting a colleague about bad time keeping. Shockingly, 19% of employers have complained to their superior about a co-workers smell, whilst 15% admit they have moved desk to escape an odour. Brooker comments that whilst HR managers are taught to deal with these situations, the best way to confront the issue is with empathy and professionalism. She explains: “There is a wealth of training available, but there is no substitute for first-hand experience. Using our own knowledge and experiences is the best training, giving HR the ability to advise, guide and support managers and to be able to confidently manage difficult situations and conversations.” The report concluded by claiming that women were the most likely to be offended by a bad smelling co-worker with a third saying they “wouldn’t take them seriously”. Surprisingly, almost half of female British employees say they wouldn’t hire someone with odour issues, compared to just a third of men. If you would like to discuss any ‘delicate’ HR issues, please contact Consensus HR. We guarantee that we have dealt with the same or similar circumstances in the past and will be happy to offer some initial advice.

Human Relationships and Secrets Through “Frankie and Grace” As a relationship therapist I am often saddened by the complexity of maintaining a clandestine relationship within a primary relationship, and the trauma that is caused to all involved when it becomes public knowledge. So the other day while scratching around for something to watch on TV, I was delighted to happen upon the Netflix series Frankie and Grace, which explores this issue very sensitively. Frankie and Grace are two married women of 70ish, they do not like each other and they have always been rivals. They have both been married for 40 plus years to their respective partners, Sol and Robert who are divorce lawyers in practice together. The opening shows the two couples having dinner, during the course of which Sol and Robert come out to Frankie and Grace about their longstanding homosexual relationship and their plan to go public, move in together and marry. Naturally, this is something of a bombshell and the series goes on to explore how life moves forward for the four main characters and their families. Grace, played by the ever youthful Jane Fonda, is funny, smart, sassy and sexy. She cannot understand why her husband would leave her, as she is the “full package”. The wonderful Lily Tomlin plays the very bohemian Frankie with an elegance and lightness of touch that rightly earned her a Primetime Emmy Award. These two are thrown together by their plight and by the fact that they both take refuge in their jointly owned beach house. They could not be more different in their reaction to the unfolding events. While their soon to be ex-husbands come out to all their friends, plan the divorces and their elaborate nuptials, Grace maintains a controlled, cool and elegant stance which is rather repressed. Whereas Frankie lets it “all hang out”. She takes to chanting, smoking dope, crying and making many pots of “vaginal lube” for the over 70’s. This she tries to press on Grace when she starts internet dating. Giving her graphic instructions on the whereabouts of her clitoris and use of said lube that had me weeping with laughter! The programme demonstrates beautifully the complexity of hidden sexuality, secrets and the pain of leading a double life; as well as the inadvertent distress and trauma caused to others in this process. Grace’s husband Robert deals with this in a bullish manner, whereas Sol finds himself conflicted by his love and concern for Frankie and his delight at being free to be with Robert openly. The series also triumphs the deep relationship that Frankie and Grace develop out of this adversity, as they battle through the events that unfold and learn the richness of valuing and respecting each other and their differences. It is a wonderful study of the complexity of human relationships. If you are struggling with relationship revelations in your life, we have a team of specialists ready to help you at LCC.

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS Landlords - Are you prepared to carry out ‘Right to Rent’ checks? From 1 February 2016 all landlords must carry out ‘right to rent’ checks on all tenants. This means it is your responsibility as a Landlord to check that your tenants have the right to be living in England. These rules are already in place in Birmingham and Wolverhampton, amongst other places, but as of 1 February 2016 it will be law throughout England. What does this mean? As a landlord, you must: 1. Know who will be living at the property and if it would be their only or main home 2. Check that all tenants have the right to live in the UK 3. Check the original documents which prove that they have a right to live in the UK and ensure those documents are genuine and dated 4. Keep a record of the checked documents; and 5. Store the copies in accordance with Data Protection Law When you are making these checks, you must be sure that the tenant’s right to live in the UK has not expired. If there is a time limit on their passports or travel documents, then you must make another check within the next 12 months. What happens if a tenant doesn’t pass the check? You must tell the Home Office if you find that your tenant does not have the right to live in the UK. After finding out that the tenant does not pass the ‘right to rent’ check, if you decide you want the tenant to leave the property, you will still need to comply with the law to end the tenancy. What if a landlord doesn’t carry out these checks? There is a possible fine of up to £3,000 if you rent a property to someone who does not pass the ‘right to rent’ check or if you do not notify the Home Office after finding out that the tenant did not pass the check. If you would like more information on Landlord and Tenant or Property law issues please contact Curwens on: 01763 241 261 - Royston 01992 463 727 - Hoddesdon 0208 363 4444 - Enfield 17

Movies to Watch Out for Early in 2016 by Sonny Etchell

Hurrah for DVD’s out for the festive season. Perfect for holing up on a dark wintry day is Ant-Man, a hugely fun, funny and satisfying addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Similar to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man is a refreshing Marvel movie that intelligently blends comedy with action, while developing strong characters satisfyingly portrayed by Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Peña.

Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang, an expert thief trying to get on the mend in order to be with his daughter Cassie. But when he is recruited by Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to be his successor as Ant-Man, he must conduct a heist in order save the world, but maybe not in the typical Marvel movie fashion you’d expect. Ant-Man is refreshing in comparison to other Marvel movies due to its small scale, which it embraces by displaying expertly computer generated ant-perspective action sequences that take place in premises such as a bathtub and a toy train set. And even though stakes are high in this film, it doesn’t allow itself to fall to the tendency of tiresome city-destruction scenes that we see in a number of Marvel movies. Ant-Man originally had Edgar Wright as its director before Peyton Reed took on the project. As a huge fan of Edgar’s work I can’t help but feel like he would have made a more witty, energetic and even better movie. He did however get writing credit which is nice to see. The fact that Marvel can take these more unknown characters such as Ant-Man and make movies this good just shows what they’re

18

capable of. Ant-Man is a well-acted standalone Marvel movie that successfully blends humour with small-scale action and despite a relatively weak villain (my only slight criticism of the casting) Marvel have introduced another hero to their universe that I can’t wait to see more of. 2016 looks set to be a very promising year movie wise if Suicide Squad is typical. It’s out early in the year and sees the return of Will Smith. The Plot involves a secret government agency who recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency. This film is essentially an ensemble of villains. The director David Ayer is very capable. He knows how to work with an ensemble cast as he proved in 'Fury' and he really knows his stuff when it comes to gritty crime as shown in 'End of Watch' Alongside the return of Will Smith, the cast also has Jared Leto as the new Joker which has had a massive impact on film fans due to the Joker's new and different appearance – Notably the tattoos, metal teeth and short hair. I applaud the decision to make him different from previous Jokers. Heath Ledger's Joker was phenomenal and probably the best of time, so we can’t attempt a Ledger 2.0. Next up in February come a New Coen Brothers film Hail Caesar . A Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line. Like 'Suicide Squad', 'Hail, Caesar' has a fantastic, star-studded cast including George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Josh Brolin and Scarlett Johansson to mention a few Really looking forward to seeing some excellent actors together in a Coen Brothers - It's a recipe for success And even though we'll only be in February, this looks to be a potentially multiple Oscar winning movie. All in all a great start to a new year, full of superhero films Sonny Etchell is a 17 year old student with a passion for film and writing. Passion for Art: An Interview with International Artist, Jake Knee Jake Knee was originally born in Zimbabwe and now lives in Northern Ireland. He has travelled to several countries in Europe and has been to Thailand and Australia as a younger man. After having qualified as a motorcycle mechanic he settled down with children in the warm climates of Zimbabwe. Although successful in his career it was evident both in Africa and the United Kingdom that his true love was always been expressing himself through drawing and painting. This all started from an obsession with drawing and colouring as a child. He was privileged to attend art school from the age of fourteen. Ironically though, his art teacher at “O” levels (GCSE) told him that he would never make it as an artist. As much as his passion was in the arts, life got in the way and only ten years ago he picked up a paint brush again and the obsession returned. After experimenting in various mediums he now paints in oils and loves using both brush and knife for dramatic effects in vibrant coloured abstract works. Jakes inspiration comes from the study of Monet, Van Gogh, Thomas Kinkade and Kandinsky to name but a few. He loves the backgrounds of Turner and his use of light as could be said for Manet. He paints in the hope that it inspires people to unlock the inner artist and feel the freedom that a brush and pallet knife or even a pen can bring. When he is painting he loses all track of time and place and paints from within the painting as if he is painting nature; combining all the colour around himself. He has to be reminded to take a break as he has been known to paint non-stop for up to twelve hours at a time. His message for the world is “to take the time to listen to the birds and watch the cloud colours change, remember we are all living in this beautiful place so let's open up our imagination's and appreciate it like we did as free thinking children.” He hopes one day to paint a true masterpiece not so much for the recognition or financial benefit but to know that his work or works may inspire generations to come! Jakes’ paintings are on Display and for sale at Mardleybury Gallery in Datchwoth. For more information go to www.mardleyburygallery.co.uk

Transition by Janey Lee Grace Could 2016 be the year that you decide to make some changes, big or small in your life? Often New Year resolutions include the resolve to be healthier, fitter, contribute more to society or start a new project. Sometimes it can be good to see the bigger picture too and instead of just focusing on yourself to look out to the wider community and the whole concept of sustainability. I’m not just suggesting we try and tick an ‘eco’ box, much of that can be ‘green-washing’ and I’m unsure anyone really understands carbon offsetting but ensuring that your own local economy thrives and has sustainable community initiatives can be a very rewarding goal. There are many Transition towns now across the UK and Herts. is not without these innovative projects. The accepted definition of a Transition town, or more generally a transition initiative, is a grass root community project that seeks to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability by creating local groups that uphold the values of the transition network. Across Hertfordshire Transition Hemel Hempstead, Watford, Letchworth and Berkhamsted. Kings Langley now has Transition initiative and what they call a ‘Community Vision’ “Our vision of Kings Langley in 2040 is one of a resilient, collaborative and interdependent community that meets the needs of its residents using local and renewable resources’ They run forums for ideas and open meetings, Act as a catalyst ~ creating space or roles for other people to take part and do things; identifying and developing local leadership, engage with other local community groups, e.g. church groups, WI, local government and other interested parties. Their motto is Be the seeds of change ~ be actively conscious in our way of being and actions, “walking our talk”. One of the most visible aspects of Kings Langley transition is the monthly market on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Local produce available includes, bread, cheese, meat, honey, vegetables, coffee, cakes and lots more. They also regularly do Community Digs, so if you want to get your hands dirty and have some fun join them at their community farm, you can email transitioninkings@gmail.com for more information. http://www.transitioninkings.org/

Cheeses for Christmas

Award winning Cheesemonger, Toby Archer shares his top tips on how to create the perfect cheeseboard this Christmas. Christmas is a time of indulgence, a time to let your hair down, eat, drink and be merry. Cheese is as synonymous with Christmas as pigs in blankets or cranberry sauce, an integral part of any Christmas lunch or Boxing Day buffet. Its welcome appearance at the end of a meal signals a time for appreciation, prolonged conversations and plenty of port! You want to create a cheeseboard that offers different styles, textures and flavours for your guests to enjoy. This is why the combination of Cheddar, Stilton and Brie has always been popular, as you've got a blue, a hard cheese, and a soft cheese. Toby always recommends going for this trio, but perhaps be more adventurous in the cheeses you select. The perfect Stilton from Colston Bassett should be a rich cream colour with blue veining spread throughout. The texture of the cheese is smooth and creamy with a mellow flavour with no sharp acidic taste from the blue. Melt in the mouth perfection. If you want to try a different blue cheese, Beauvale soft blue is perfect for those of you that prefer a milder blue flavour. Cheddar is a great, traditional English cheese and Toby recommends cheddar matured in Gough's Cave in the heart of Cheddar Gorge. A unique flavour and texture. Matured for 11 to 12 months and made with unpasteurised milk to retain the characteristics of the local pastures. Multi Award winning Tunworth (British Brie) has a long lasting sweet, nutty flavour and a creamy texture with a thin wrinkled rind. It is made by hand in small batches in a purpose built creamery with pasteurised whole cows milk. Old Winchester is a much dryer and harder cheese, becoming more reminiscent young Parmesan with a distinctive nuttiness in flavour. Balance is the name of the game with a Christmas cheeseboard, so include something creamy and soft to act as a counterweight to the blue and hard cheeses. Toby suggests a mellow goat's cheese, on the basis that "people are gradually developing a palate for it, so if they're prepared to try it, don't blow them away." He recommends Childwickbury, (our most local cheese) a fresh, creamy goats' cheese with a mousse-like texture and a natural acidity.

Serve your cheese with traditional accompaniments such as grapes and figs and other more decadent additions such as pickled walnuts, pears in calvados or figs steeped in cognac. Make sure you have a board big enough to allow each cheese room to breathe and be cut comfortably, allocate a separate knife for each cheese, but above all, enjoy!

When putting so much thought and effort into your cheese selection, it is best to use plain unflavoured crackers; you want to let the cheese do all the talking, explains Toby. He also suggests allowing each person about 100g to 125g of cheese. So for six people, around 750g of cheese in total is a good amount. If you are looking for a festive supper then I'd allow each person 150g each. For more information regarding the right cheese for your Christmas Cheese Board, Please contact Toby Archer at The Cheese Plate.

Pork When it comes to buying pork it can be a minefield trying to decide between free-range, outdoor reared and outdoor-bred, not to mention organic. The trouble is pigs, like chickens, can grow quickly given the right food and environment and profit focused businesses will ignore animal welfare, especially if the customer only sees the end product on a supermarket shelf. The most important thing to look for next time you’re scanning the shelves or counter is that it’s British. British pork farmers follow some of the strictest criteria for pig husbandry in the world, meaning that overall welfare standards are incredibly high, whatever you choose. Look for the Red Tractor mark for extra reassurance and watch out for products that say they’ve been produced in UK as that doesn’t mean the pork has been reared in the UK; only the Union Jack label guarantees that. One of the fantastic things about British pork is its versatility, there’s a whole multitude of delicious cuts, as well as wonderful sausages, bacon and proper ham. The Love Pork campaign works to improve knowledge of British pork and its website offers a whole host of delicious recipes and ideas for using different cuts and making the most of your leftover roast. If you’re looking for the very highest quality pork for your table then take a look at the BigBarn marketplace to purchase from a reputable supplier or farmer or to search for a producer near you check out the local food map. We’d love to hear about your favourite pork recipes. For a chance to win a prize, please video your recipe and add it to KIS (Keep it Simple) Cookery. Please have a look at existing videos here and try and keep your video less than 2 minutes long. Healthy Pork Facts: 1. Pork is an excellent source of protein (21.8g per 100g on average) and essential amino acids. 2. Pork is great for topping up your iron levels because it contains Haem iron, which is easily absorbed by the body. Pork even helps to increase your iron uptake when eaten with other foods. 3. Pork is packed with vitamins. It’s rich in Vitamin B1 (thiamine), important for vitality and energy levels. A 100g steak contains 90% of our daily requirement. Pork is also a great source of Vitamin B12, essential for a healthy nervous system. It is also rich in Zinc, which can boost your immune system. www.bigbarn.co.uk

#ADHDAWARENESS ADHD is the most common behavioral disorder in the UK but the least recognized. We at ADHDUK1 believe that the stigma attached to the condition is due to unfortunate media coverage and we would now like the opportunity to tell our side of the story. We would like to ask you to please support our campaign as we look to raise awareness of ADHD and other mental health Issues. I was fortunate enough to have grown up with a good awareness of ADHD due to my brother being diagnosed at a young age, but yet still didn’t see the warning signs until it was to late. I was aware that I was often the outsider looking in, as a child I often struggled retaining friendships, which seemed normal at the time, later I realized that this was often down to my social incapability’s an issue that still takes effect to this day. Other signs were there throughout life as well, although acceptable grades were achieved at school, this wasn’t easy to do, often forgetting deadlines on homework and assessments and staying up till late the night before having been asked by parents to do the homework throughout the previous week. But my focus was often elsewhere, able to recall the whole families phone number of hand or able to remember the registration plate of friends and family even years after the car is sold. Thus proving the common misconception that ADHD sufferers are not the most intelligent, ADHD sufferers are indeed a group with high intellect but this is often guided to 1 or 2 Hyper-focused activities, for me this was numbers and creativity via photography and construction. Later in life, my early to mid-twenties, I struggled with other things that most consider day to day routines, such as ensuring I was up and ready for work of a morning, remembering appointments and/or meetings. When at work, although in a job that I enjoyed, I often had trouble with paperwork and deadlines. Following the birth of my first son at 24, I unfortunately allowed the frustration of day to day life to explode, this lead to a violent outburst which the doctors told me was down to Depression and Anxiety. I believed their word on this, until at 26 and following the birth of my 2nd son the same issues presented themselves. This time I took matters further and sought help from as many different agencies as possible,

26

Mental Health Specialists, Anger Management and Police. I was subsequently convicted by the police and during this time was assessed for mental health issues and ADHD was diagnosed at 27 years of age. So even with some knowledge and the signs, my family and I were unaware! My family and my partner continue to support me and we have, together, looked for various support groups. It was whilst looking for support I found ‘@adhduk1’ (on Twitter and Instagram) fronted by Kayleigh Ruthven (27), who herself has been through a journey to receive her diagnosis. Kayleigh began her social media campaign to raise awareness in 2015. Having spoken with Kayleigh it was clear I wasn’t alone in my struggles and a team is being built to help people to have smoother journeys in life and raise the public awareness of ADHD.

Please can we now call on you support to allow us to put the tools in place to educate people on ADHD and run support groups. We are hopeful of being able to raise awareness UK wide and then look to expand upon this and take it further. We would also like to see an awareness day on Friday 19th February 2016. It was in 1902 that ADHD was recognised by Sir George Still. So let’s make 19-02 memorable every year from 2016 on. P.S we would love your support with this project, our fundraising campaign will take place throughout December at ADHD awareness fundraising. https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/kayleigh-ruthven twitter/Instagram tags @adhduk1
