Interviews with the cast of the Dunstable Panto - Aladdin

Brian Capron Brian Capron, known for playing the infamous Coronation Street baddie Richard Hillman, is back and playing a character as heinous as ever. Head to the Grove Theatre, Dunstable, this December to see Brian luring an unsuspecting Aladdin into his evil plans. The Sticks caught up with Brian Capron ahead of his role as the villainous Abanazar‌ Have you always been interested in theatre and television? I became interested in theatre at school doing school plays. I started working in the theatre in Exeter in 1970 and it became my first love from then. I started working in TV in 1973 and have been lucky enough to appear in so many different shows from comedy to high drama. I love both mediums and feel very privileged to have worked in them for so long. You’re well known for your villainous roles; which of your characters has been the best baddie and why? Naturally I have to opt for Richard Hillman as my best villainous role to date because his storyline was so exciting and became a little bit of Corrie history. It's rare to have such an interesting and challenging role and I had the time of my life with the twists and turns in such a dramatic plot. What do you think will be the most enjoyable aspect of performing in panto? Someone once said that the happiest sound in the world is that of children's laughter. And that's the best thing about Panto – of course I like to give them a bit of fright too! If I hear the odd gasp or dare I say cry, I know I'm doing my job! What pantomime character do you think you are most like? A very old Buttons. Do you have a message for the Dunstable audience ahead of Aladdin this Christmas? This Panto is going to be great because Jamie, the producer, puts real heart into it, with a beautiful set and costumes, live music and a terrific cast. You and the family will love it!

4

Ed Petrie We also caught up with Ed Petrie of CBBC, who will be playing Aladdin’s cheeky, fun-loving brother Wishee Washee… Have you always been interested in theatre and television? Since I can remember. Seriously – some of my earliest memories are of me pretending to present my own TV show behind the shed in our garden. I finally got to show off properly in a production of ‘Bugsy Malone’ when I was 8 years old and after that I was performing in at least 2 amateur theatre productions a year up until my early 20s, when I switched to doing stand-up comedy. I needed to start earning money! You travel a lot with CBBC; what is the most interesting place you have visited and why? Wow, that’s a tricky one. Filming ‘All Over The Place’ I’ve been all round the UK, USA, Australia, Europe and Asia. I’d probably have to say it’s a toss up between China and Japan. I think it’s the closest you get to being on an alien planet in terms of language. It’s even hard to make yourself understood with sign language as they seem to mime things out in a different way to the rest of the world. The nice thing is that despite all the differences we still managed to have a laugh with people and do some funny filming. What do you think will be the most enjoyable aspect of performing in panto? For me it’s the shows either side of Christmas Day. I just love how excited the crowd are about Christmas, especially on Christmas Eve. You know you’re giving people memories that they may look back on fondly for years and years to come and that’s a very special feeling. You will be playing the character of Wishee Washee; can you please sum up the character in a little poem? Wishee Washee is a silly lad But deep down he’s not that bad Unlike his dancing in the show But the important thing is he has a go (Dancing is always my Achilles heel! I have to practice 3 times as hard as the rest of the cast) What pantomime character do you think you are most like? Probably Wishee Washee. It’s a perfect fit for me! Do you have a message for the Dunstable audience ahead of Aladdin this Christmas? If you want to send a Christmas present to my dressing room, I’m a big fan of Celebrations chocolates!

Kieran & Sarah Britain’s Got Talent auditions start again this month, for another year of the eagerly anticipated talent show. As excitement surrounding the show builds, the Grove Theatre, Dunstable introduces two 2014 semi-finalists, who will be joining the Dunstable Panto cast of Aladdin. The Sticks caught up with Kieran and Sarah ahead of their roles as the flamboyant dame Widow Twankey and the generous Genie respectively… Have you always been interested in theatre and singing? Kieran: Yes I have; when I was 7 my mother and Nana used to drag me to the theatre to watch my uncle perform. Seeing my uncle in Little Shop of Horrors was amazing and made me want to pursue it fully. I didn't start until I was like 13 as I was big into my sport but always was singing around the house and watching shows which I found great fun. Sarah: Yes I love the theatre and singing and have done all my life. My first experience was when I was 6 years old, winning a singing competition on the radio and going to see Grease with my Dad. I said “Dad this is what I want to do.” I was only 6 but I knew! I joined the local stage school, Chaplins, had singing lessons with the fabulous Belinda Collins, and attended pantomimes every year, wishing for the day I could be in one. You were a successful duo on Britain’s Got Talent; can you tell us something that surprised you about your experience and what the best moment of your time on the show was? Kieran: BGT was a great experience! We were very surprised to reach the live semi-finals as there were 60,000 applicants – we couldn’t believe it when they announced our name but so thrilled. There were two best moments; walking out in front of the judges for the first time and the semi-final performance – it was so thrilling to be a part of. Sarah: It surprised me how much recording you do for such short airtime, making for very long days. I was also surprised by how loud the buzzers are (not that we got one I must add). Imagine a fire alarm in your house and times it by ten! The best moment was our first audition. So many acts were given no’s before us, but when we finished singing, the audience and three judges were on their feet, giving us four yes’s and a moment I will remember for the rest of my life. What do you think will be the most enjoyable aspect of performing in panto? Kieran: I think it will have to be swanning around in those big beautiful dresses! It’s my first time being a dame and having seen so many amazing dames in my time, it’ll be a big role to fill but I’ve very excited to take on the challenge! Sarah: I’m really looking forward to the big numbers and being involved in the group scenes on stage. Usually I play a fairy-type character and just float on and off by myself but this time I can get my teeth into the vocals and big dance 6

numbers. I’m also super excited about something that happens during a song sung by Aladdin and Jasmine, but at the minute I cannot say what it is…

What pantomime character do you think you are most like? Kieran: I think I'm very much a Genie kind of guy really.

Sarah: Probably Widow Twankey; I always like wearing OTT sparkly dresses, having a little harmless flirt with the older men in the audience and just genuinely love being a girl! Do you have a message for the Dunstable audience ahead of Aladdin this Christmas? Kieran: All I can say is, be prepared to be swept away on a magical carpet journey with some fun-filled comedy magic! Lots of slap stick comedy will be happening this Christmas at the Grove Theatre, Dunstable. Sarah: It’s going to be a fabulous year for the Grove Theatre. The cast are very talented, with a great energy and the songs are very catchy, getting you in the mood to party. So get your tickets booked and join the fun – you also get to see my big butch boyfriend in a dress; that’s worth the money alone! See you all soon. Brexit and Beyond: the HR impact There is much uncertainly about the impact of Brexit upon employment law. Whilst change is inevitable, it won’t be a case of ‘starting over’. The nature of changes that will affect businesses and employees are linked to the terms of the UK’s exit. Therein lies the uncertainty. Theresa May plans to invoke Article 50 (European Union withdrawal notice) in March 2017. Last week, it was ruled that this action must be supported by Parliament. This action has fuelled the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. Around three million EU workers are waiting to hear how Britain plans to extract itself from the EU. Ultimately, they need to know how it affects them. In fact, Britain’s withdraw will impact upon all workers in the UK. This is because the EU influences many of our employment laws. They will still be valid and enforceable in postEU Britain. However – most will need to be reviewed and possibly reformed or even revoked. Business as Usual – Despite Brexit “Communication is vital in such uncertain times,’ says Matthew Pinto-Chilcott of Consensus HR. “Some employees may be feeling worried about their future. Unfortunately, there have been cases of bullying and discrimination linked to the Brexit decision. Employers must take swift action in these instances. “Many businesses are already feeling the impact of Britain’s decisions to leave the EU. From an HR perspective, it’s important to continue as usual until we know the terms involved.” Envisaged Employment Law Changes The CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) has predicted changes to the following areas of employment law: • • • • • •

Immigration: free movement Holidays/working time: opt outs Equality: compensation cap Atypical workers: employment rights Transfer of undertakings (Tupe) Data protection: new rules

Do any of the above aspects of employment law affect your business? Are you concerned about how to manage and meet your HR responsibilities post-Brexit? Arrange a free, no-obligation discussion with Matthew from Consensus HR. Let’s make sure that your HR team is Brexit-ready.

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS Do you have a right to see your Grandchildren? Quite often grandparents can be the forgotten sufferers of the breakdown of their children’s marriage or relationship, and cannot imagine being unable to see their grandchildren regularly. Many grandparents have been denied the right to see and spend time with their grandchildren and many have successfully negotiated, either in or out of the court, for the right to see their grandchildren. What can grandparents do? If, as a grandparent, you fear losing contact with your grandchildren, you should: • approach the parents - explain that no matter what the problems are between them, you, as a grandparent, do not intend to take sides and that you only wish to maintain a strong relationship with your grandchildren. •

consider mediation - an independent mediator will try and help to reach an agreement with the parents – usually at round table meetings.

consider a letter - a carefully drafted letter can diffuse the tension of the situation and express why you feel contact with your grandchildren is so important for you and your grandchildren.

if progress cannot be made by trying the above routes, then it is possible to a apply to the Family Court for a decision to be made.

Do grand parents need permission from the Court to start an application? Yes, they do. How important are Grandparents? Family Courts increasingly recognise and promote the invaluable role that grandparents have to play in their grandchildren’s lives. If an Order is made, the Court’s powers to enforce those orders have recently been increased, making it extremely difficult for parents to ignore them. A Court order is therefore a very powerful way to ensure that grandparents can maintain a meaningful and fulfilling relationship with their grandchildren. If this relates to you and you would like more information, then you are welcome to give us a call for a no obligation chat on 0208 8847221. The Grandparents’ Association also has lots of practical support: www.grandparents-association.org.uk Curwens LLP is your local firm of solicitors offering most areas of legal advice – based in Royston, Hoddesdon, and Enfield.

Your success may prompt you to run for office or change a restrictive law. The Full Moon on the 14th marks an exciting turning point in an intimate relationship. Getting engaged or married is a distinct possibility. Alternatively, you might form a business partnership. The second half of December will be filled with exciting moneymaking opportunities. Head for an exotic place that has captivated your imagination since childhood.

Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes January 2017

Aries (Mar21/Apr20) 2017 begins in a quiet, understated way. Instead of plunging right into the thick of things, you will gently test the waters. Quiet, contemplative activities will give you the emotional strength to assume big career responsibilities. The Full Moon on the 12th will find you facing off with oppressive officialdom that wants you to spend more time at work. It’s critical to set healthy boundaries between work and leisure. You can’t neglect your family for the sake of your career. As January draws to a close, you’ll become more and more sociable. A gathering on the 28th is worth attending; you’ll attract admirers like a flower draws bees at this stimulating gathering. Your popularity comes courtesy of the New Moon, which is helping you to make inroads to strong friendships. Widening your social network will pay off both personally and professionally. Come out of the shadows and into the light as February approaches.

Cancer (Jun22/Jul23) A pleasure trip could pave the way for an important social contact or romantic connection. Spend the opening days of 2017 touring a city that has fascinated you since childhood. If you can’t take a trip at this time, you can always armchair travel via the internet or a movie. Discussing this work on a social networking site could cause you to cross paths with someone who shares your love of a particular art form or artist. On the 12th, the Full Moon could make you quite emotional. You’ll be ready to cut ties with a relative who is always overstepping their boundaries. Don’t get defensive about this decision. You’re well within your right to limit their access to your personal life. The pressure will ease toward the end of the month, thanks to the New Moon on the 28th. An inheritance, royalty payment or insurance may arrive quite suddenly. Use this windfall to realize a career goal.

Taurus (Apr21/May21) Rubbing elbows with VIPs will be a trend during the first half of January. Whether you’re looking for love, want a job or feel compelled to showcase your creative work, get out and network. Having good connections will help you reach goals that were unattainable last year. Beware of making controversial remarks on social media sites on the 12th. That’s when the Full Moon puts everybody on edge. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Blocking people who get under your skin can also keep your emotions in check. There’s no point wasting valuable energy on a blowhard who is never going to change. The New Moon on the 28th will attract a welcome career opportunity. Don’t hesitate to apply for a new job in the tech industry. This position will give you fame, acclaim and a very nice salary. At long last, you’ll be able to enjoy the creature comforts you adore.

Leo (Jul24/Aug23) Financial gain through a marriage, business partnership or investment deal could arrive early in the month. This is a good time to indulge your love of luxury. Splash out on a new outfit, fancy gadget or anything else that appeals to your sensual side. As the middle of January approaches, you could feel spiritually depleted because of a stressful Full Moon on the 12th. Beware of a temptation to lash out at people who try pushing your buttons with teasing remarks. It’s best to walk away from such provocateurs or better yet, avoid them altogether. The New Moon on the 28th is ideal for embarking on a partnership of some kind. You’ll feel an instant connection with someone who doesn’t look or sound like anybody else. As January draws to a close, avoid discussing sensitive topics like religion and politics. An argument could break out that does serious damage to a work relationship.

Gemini (May22/Jun21) You’ll be basking in the public spotlight in the opening days of January. This is a terrific time to make a sales pitch or public appeal. People will respond warmly to your wit, intelligence and humanity. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked to manage a collection or fund. Use this money to assist people who have been overlooked in your community. The Full Moon on the 12th could make you feel undervalued, due to a paycheque that is much smaller than you expected. Take this opportunity to build a strategy for landing a better job. Working at a university, publishing house or law firm could be profitable, both emotionally and financially. Start sending out applications on the 28th, when you’ll have the strength of the New Moon on your side. If you’ve always wanted to work abroad, this could be your big chance to do so. Be willing to venture out of familiar surroundings.

Virgo (Aug24/Sep23) Two heads are better than one in the early days of January. Spending quality time with a loving partner will strengthen your commitment. It will feel like you can move mountains with your beloved by your side. If you’re single, you could meet someone special at a professional conference. Be ready to make the first move, as the object of your affection might be too shy to approach you. The Full Moon on the 12th will put strain on a friendship. You’re tired of trying to keep up with lavish lifestyles. Instead of pushing yourself to buy more luxuries, focus on living within your means. You may not realise it, but your nearest and dearest might also be lying awake at night, wondering how to pay the bills. On the 28th, the New Moon could mark an exciting job offer. Not only will this position offer a lot of mental stimulation, but it will also have some impressive perks.

Good things come to those who wait.

Quitting a job, starting a health regimen and breaking a bad habit are among the possibilities. By the 28th, you’ll look like a brand new person. Use the energy of the New Moon to undergo a dramatic makeover. Changing your look will attract exciting opportunities. Don’t be surprised when someone asks you to manage a social media campaign or launch a promotional effort. You know how to attract favourable publicity. Use this talent to pave the way to a successful career.

Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) Love, adventure and leisure will characterise the opening days of 2017 for you. This is a wonderful time to go on a romantic trip with your amour, post a dating profile or launch a creative project. Work projects are destined to be revised during this period, due to Mercury retrograde, so don’t pour too much energy into this area until the middle of January. On the 12th, the Full Moon will expose some gaps in your knowledge. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and additional training. Nobody will look down on you for wanting to further your education. The New Moon on the 28th could allow you to work from home a few days each week. Avoiding a long commute and office politics will make you much more productive. Rearrange your schedule to finish this work, as it has significant potential. The New Moon on the 28th could find you adopting a lower profile. Use this time to rest, relax and recharge your spiritual batteries. You’ll be much more productive after you catch up on your sleep. Focussing on positive influences that fill you with hope will also be therapeutic. Do your best to avoid toxic people and tense situations in the closing days of January. You’ve always been highly sensitive to your environment. As a result, you should take every precaution to protect yourself from stress.

Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) The opening days of 2017 offer a welcome opportunity to recover from the Christmas season. Stick close to home, spending quality time with your relatives and pets. There will be plenty of time to hit the party scene later, when your body has had a chance to rest, relax and revive. The Full Moon on the 12th could have you scrambling to pay an unexpected bill. Take a deep breath and get in touch with your creditor; it may be possible to work out a payment program over an extended period. As January comes to a close, you’ll get some good news on the 28th. That’s when the New Moon will help you reconnect with a fun loving neighbour or relative. Together, you might book a trip or sign up for a course.

Best of the year When compiling these “best of the year” lists, it can be easy to overlook/bypass those films that came out in the early months of the year. Released in February, Deadpool was a breath of fresh air into the superhero movie genre, made possible by the determination and passion of Ryan Reynolds and the demand of the fans. Everything from the unconventional story structure to the blood-soaked comicbook action to the 4thwall-breaking Ferris Baeller’s Day Off reference, Deadpool, if not the best movie of the year is certainly one of the most memorable. The success that Deadpool received was the spark for more comic-book movies like it. While the humour didn’t always work, Ryan Reynolds’ charisma shows that he was born to play this character. Another movie released early in 2016 was Disney’s Zootopia, the story of a bunny rabbit who goes to the animal metropolis “Zootopia” to fulfil her dream of becoming a police officer. This is not only a visually vibrant and lush animation, but a socially deep and emotional film that not only kids but adults loved, The voiceover is good across the board but Jason Bateman is especially great as sly fox Nick Wilde. The movie is funny and entertaining, with a fun story and even underlying moral messages regarding equality, stereotypes and relationships. It is a fantastic and mature movie that may even appeal to adults more so than kids. It is one of, if not THE best animated movie of 2016. Don’t let this one slip under your radar. Looking ahead to 2017, there is plenty to look forward to. In March we will see the anticipated action, sci-fi Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johanson and based on the original 1995 anime. The trailer gives us Blade Runner-esque city-scapes and awesome action shots. While it looks ambitious, it promises to be an excellent liveaction adaptation of the beloved anime. In the same month of March we also have Kong: Skull Island hitting theatres. Based on the origins of King Kong, this action/adventure movie will star Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman and looks to be the very definition of blockbuster, with large-scale action, fun and, oh yeah, a giant Gorilla. It is also worth mentioning, 2017 will bring us a new Wonder Woman movie in June and what looks to be the best onscreen Spider-Man ever in Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland in July. 2016 was a decent year for film but 2017 looks as though it could be monumental. Cured Meat We have been curing meat to preserve it since the Stone Age either, drying, salting, smoking or even pickling. Bacon and ham are probably our most popular but like any modern food most curing processes have been mechanised and chemicals added. Most of these processes result in the meat being preserved very quickly using large amounts of salty water injected into the meat. Have you ever noticed the white liquid that comes out your bacon when you fry it? And get annoyed because you have paid for 200g of bacon but only got 100g of cooked rashers! Luckily real cured meats have had a revival here in the UK in the past few years. Normally something you eat on holiday has become readily available and in some cases better than the european producers. Across the UK, farmers and butchers are using traditional curing methods on their bacon and sausages as well as moving towards specialist pate, hams, salami, and chorizo. It seems that whatever they can do, we can do better, or at least, just as well! From Suffolk to Wales and Cornwall to the Cotswolds and even in the depths of Scotland, British farmers are turning out cured fish, meats and pate that are truly making a name for themselves. Food experts are giving them the thumbs up and top chefs are choosing them for their antipasto and menus. It has become so popular that you can even make your own cured meats at home. Just ask your local butcher for advice. Or find a course in our MarketPlace. If you haven’t yet had a chance to try some of the delicious cured meats being produced in the UK, then you really should. We’ve got lots for you to choose from at MarketPlace.

In-ear coaching also gives you real-time feedback to keep you updated on your workout progress in real-time to help you optimize each workout session. xocial Online Community Fostering Healthy ‘Competitive Kindness’ (www.xocial.com) One online community called xocial (pronounced soh-shuhl) is gamifying goodness, calculating and curating “competitive kindness” to help cause-conscious and otherwise kindhearted athletes, fitness enthusiasts and others out-nice each other and make the world a better place. It connects people and organizations to health-related causes they care about, charitable and otherwise, and inspires them to take action amid friendly competition against family, friends, team-mates, colleagues, other companies/organizations/clubs and even perfect strangers. Also notable is the fact that the xocial platform measures the impact of a participant’s efforts, continually building what’s called an “XO score”—a representation of one’s overall positive social impact. Folks build their score by completing fitness and other challenges as well as engaging with others in the xocial community. This XO score methodology provides a benchmark that helps spur the spirit of competition—the favourable kind where everyone ultimately wins. The numerical measurements allow users to compete with each other to see who can do the most good. The XO score also puts the phenomenon of social media to more productive use. Instead of measuring popularity, xocial measures an individual or organization’s positive social impact as they compete to benefit health and wellness-related causes. While traditional philanthropy focuses on financial giving or attending singular or one-off events, with the xocial platform anyone can benefit social causes regardless of their level of fitness or skill, special interest or financial donation. Simple campaigns can be built online for free, and anyone can create one or join one already underway.

I-REMOVE contains Litramine™, a patented fiber complex made from prickly pear cactus—manufactured using a proprietary technology—that allows the ingredients to bind to fat molecules from ingested food and makes them too large to be absorbed, so the body absorbs fewer calories from fat. Taken right after a healthy, calorie-controlled meal, I-REMOVE is easy to incorporate into a busy lifestyle and does not require time-consuming meal planning or adherence to rigid, highly restrictive diets. Of course, everyone is familiar with caffeine and similar stimulant-laden oral solutions that jack up metabolism and energy levels only to cause the dreaded crash-and-burn an hour or so later. With I-REMOVE Fat Binder that is no longer a concern. This technology leverages a physiological process that can radically increase weight loss by reducing the amount of dietary fat absorbed but without the caffeine crash and other unwanted side effects. So you can start losing up to 3X more weight! Alkaline88 Water (www.Alkaline88.com) Here’s another great techdriven water option—one that Beyoncé, Miranda Kerr, Elton John, Bill Gates, Martha Stewart, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Kelly Ripa, Janet Jackson and Ray Kurzweil all have in common. They’ve all gone on the record to say that they drink alkaline water. I’ll officially add my name to that A-list. Because why not? Alkaline water is also my own go-to. Many athletes, celebrities and regular health-minded folks are attracted to the benefits of an alkaline diet, since a balanced body pH results in greater energy, more restful sleep, improved digestion and fewer colds according to some medical authorities. The Alkaline Water Company, Inc. has developed Alkaline88 for the convenience-driven alkaline water drinker who understands the benefits of electrolysis and who is looking to save money. Enhanced with 84 trace Himalayan minerals and electrolytes, Alkaline88 is premier alkaline water that achieves its 8.8 pH level through a state-ofthe-art, completely chemical-free process. The product offers consumers the unique opportunity to purchase alkaline water in usefully packaged and economical 500ml, 700ml, 1-litre, 3-litre and 1-gallon sizes.

*** Personal Care *** ‘Plaque HD’ Plaque-Identifying Toothpaste (www.DentalKit.com) Here’s a super cool, technology-driven toothpaste solution: Plaque HD. This new and first-tomarket toothpaste contains a natural plaque-indicating dye that turns plaque on your teeth a teal colour and only disappears once you’ve brushed it all off. The natural teal-coloured disclosing agents temporarily tint and identify clear plaque build-up on teeth, helping consumers brush better and smarter by targeting areas of plaque possibly missed during usual brushing. Independent studies conducted in the orthodontic department at the University of Illinois Chicago’s College of Dentistry show that patients who used Plaque HD had four times as much plaque removal compared to patients using a standard toothpaste. Silk’n FaceFX Anti-Aging Device (www.Silkn.com) I’ve found a great at-home anti-aging device from Silk’n called FaceFX, which uses light-based Home Fractional technology to benefit you. This handheld gadget uses a synergistic combination of red light energy--also known as Deep Fractional Light—in combination with deep thermal heat to stimulate collagen production and safely reach and treat multiple layers of skin. So, not only does FaceFX diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pores that are more surface level, it simultaneously penetrates deeper into the skin to address lager wrinkles and discoloured spots. It also improves skin texture, brightens skin colour and generally provides a clearer and more radiant complexion—all from the privacy and comfort of your own home! So there’s no need to get in the car and drive to an expensive spa to benefit from this clinically tested and dermatologist recommended antiaging tool, which provides both immediate and long-term skin rejuvenation results. Plus, it’s super easy to use! Each session takes only 15-20 minutes and is done just three times per week for the first month, and then just once per month thereafter. While some results can be seen immediately, the most dramatic changes typically occur in about three to seven weeks. This tool can be used on crow’s feet, under the eyes, cheeks and virtually any other problem area. With this you can put your best face forward in no time!

*** Sports & Athletics *** Compex Muscle Stimulator (www.ShopCompex.com) The Compex is a mobile handheld electronic muscle stimulating device used for rapid muscle recovery, including the removal of lactic acid that makes muscles feel sore post workout. It’s also used to tone muscles and actually build muscle density, strength and size. Other benefits include increasing circulation and oxygenating blood cells; warming up muscles to increase flexibility and reduce likelihood of injury; and massaging muscles to promote overall relaxation. The system comes with a placement guidebook on where and how to place the easy snap-on gel electrodes that come 35

with the system. For example, you can place them on your abs if you want to build up your core using this method of electric muscle stimulation. There are diagrams on how to place them on various body parts for your desired goal, like postworkout recovery or to build muscle size. And users fully regulate the strength of the electronic currents with an intuitive controller. When combined with your existing fitness routine, Compex enables you to target your training and exercise more muscle in less time, so you can achieve peak performance and fitness. It provides a more efficient workout regimen, with less risk of injury to joints and tendons, and virtually no cardiovascular fatigue.

Unequal Halo (www.Unequal.com) I also want to tell you about a sports safetyoriented piece of health tech called the Unequal Halo. It’s a protective headband for youth soccer players that utilizes something called TriDur and Accelleron technology. TriDur is a patented, elasto-meric coated Kevlar fabric used by the military and law enforcement. It’s 5x stronger than steel, with a virtually unmatched ability to absorb and disperse high impact energy. The Halo contours to any players’ head and looks just like a headband, while offering serious protection. So it’s not bulky and embarrassing to wear. It’s also fully adjustable and comes in many colours, available in both a 6mm and 10mm thicknesses. The company says that U.S. Woman’s Soccer Player Ali Krieger began wearing the Unequal Halo leading up to, and during, the 2015 FIFA World Cup due to suffering a concussion in the months prior. This is a piece of technology that can really protect children from harm and give parents peace-of-mind. RecoFit Compression Gear: Armcoolers and Sleeves (www.RecoFit.co) RecoFit Armcoolers provide the cooling benefits of Icefil technical fabric. Xylitol is embedded in the fabric and lowers the skin’s surface temperature by five degrees when activated by the evaporative process of wicking perspiration away from the skin. Air flowing over the sleeves creates the same cooling sensation. The Armcoolers also offer 50+ UPF sun protection so greasy sunscreen isn’t needed, a real bonus for those playing sports with clubs or bats and needing a good grip. Lastly, the sleeves give the arm muscles support with gentle compression. RecoFit’s calf compression sleeves also help you perform better and recover faster by improving circulation, reducing damaging muscle vibration, preventing swelling, delaying fatigue and speeding up post-exercise recovery. Constructed with a carbon-based, technical performance fabric, RecoFit calf sleeves have a negative ion charge that helps the blood uptake oxygen. The sleeves are left- and right-leg-specific, effectively providing gradient compression. RecoFit recommends using calf compression sleeves during exercise as well as post-exercise recovery.

*** Cooking & Kitchenware *** Tefal ActiFry (www.BedBathandBeyond.com) Here’s something useful and weight-wise for the kitchen; The Tefal ActiFry. This is a super versatile, timesaving kitchen gadget that allows you to prepare and enjoy all your favourite dishes hands-free and healthfully by using little to no oil. So, the word Fry in the product name is a little misleading, because it actually uses unique hot air circulation technology and stirring paddle to make tasty low fat meals ranging from meats and chicken to seafood or even vegetables and side dishes. Aside from the fact that you can cook so many things without any oil, I also love this appliance because I’m a super busy mom and it cooks things fast. Because food is always cooked at precisely 338°, there’s no preheating necessary and meals are cooked very quickly and evenly since the paddle keeps the ingredients moving and stirring as the hot air circulates all around it. Clean up is also a breeze as the pan, lid, paddle, and filter are removable and dishwasher safe. Most importantly, the ActiFry is designed to be safe and family-friendly. My kids use it all the time to make everything from chicken nuggets and chicken wings to much healthier french fries. SPT Professional Juicer (www.Wayfair.com) And finally, with eating healthier among the more popular New Year resolutions, committing to those fruits and veggies is far easier with the SPT Professional Juicer. Housed in attractive die cast aluminium, this powerful 850-watt juicer will add beauty and function to your kitchen…and your body with all of the nutrients you’ll benefit from. The unit’s extra-large 3″ feed tube makes it easy to process all types of whole fruits and vegetables without pre-cutting or peeling. The juicer includes two speed settings and an automatic pulp collecting container. Stainless steel elements and dishwasher-safe parts provide quick cleanup. Also included are a juice jug with froth separator, a cleaning brush, and a pulp container.
