ANNIE – An Interview with Craig Revel Horwood What made you want to return to Annie, and what is so appealing about the role of Miss Hannigan? I just love this character so much; I am deeply in love with her. I think she is absolutely fantastic and an extremely misunderstood woman. It’s such a wonderful opportunity to take her from the West End out on tour, and to play her in theatres I have never performed Annie in before. Playing her is like an actors playground, she is a tyrant and a villain, and those are always the most fun characters to play. I couldn’t believe that they wanted me to play Miss Hannigan at first, but I thought it would be great, and a real challenge for me. I play her for real – she’s not a pantomime dame, there’s no mucking about or breaking the fourth wall, she’s a very real character in a beautifully written show. Do you find playing a woman fun, or does it come with any particular challenges? Well the challenges are that you need to be honest and real with it. Obviously body language has a lot to do with that, also the placement of the voice, and the accent of course – which I spent six months perfecting. As Annie is set in 1930s New York, it’s really nice to play a part who speaks differently than almost anyone does these days. It was a really enjoyable challenge. Audiences probably know you best as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing, do you enjoy performing and dancing on the stage as opposed to judging others? Well, I grew up on musicals. I did West Side Story in Australia and then went into Me and My Girl and La Cage Aux Folles. I joined the famous Lido de Paris and the Moulin Rouge and then that led into being part of West End shows. The last musical I appeared in in the West End was Crazy for You which opened in 1993. I had a really fun year that year. I then left to become a director and choreographer, and subsequently a judge on Strictly. My first hoorah back onto the boards was when I was asked to do panto ten years ago, and that reignited my passion for performing again really. When I was then asked to do Annie a few years ago I couldn’t believe it, but it’s such a talented cast, I couldn’t say no! With the news that there’s a vacancy on the Strictly judging panel, do you have a dream judge you’d like to sit alongside or perhaps a fantasy contestant you’d love to see take part? I always think it’s got to be someone who knows about dance and comes from a dance world. I’m certainly going to miss Darcy a lot, she’s a class act. There are a lot of people who could do it, and I want them to choose

someone who is right for the job and has an opinion which is the most important thing! It’s long been said never work with children or animals, but in Annie you do both! Are there any challenges that come with this or do they bring something extra to the show? We have three sets of children on Annie, so they bring something really organic to the show. You’ll never get the same show twice. You have to play it differently with each set of children and they are so talented and doing incredible work on the stage and are all fantastic young actors. They will come up with stuff and you’ve got to react to it live on stage which is a bit of a challenge! What was your first experience of musical theatre? The first show that I ever went to see was Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney back in the 1970s. I just fell in love with theatre right there and then. I started training when I was 14, and when I saw Cats in London around the same time, I knew that was absolutely what I wanted to do, to train for and study for. Do you have a role you’d love to play in the future? Well, I like to create roles. I did a movie, Nativity Rocks, last year and that was great fun because I hadn’t done a movie before and it was an improvised script, so you really had to create the character from scratch. As far as the classics go, I wouldn’t mind playing a boy at some stage. I tend to get lots of female roles which is great because I love playing women but it would be nice to play a bloke so I will aim high and say I’m aiming for the next Bond! You’ve toured before with various shows, is it something you enjoy, or do you find it a bit of a challenge? I enjoy the difference in the theatres, the public and their relationships with the stage which always change. You find audiences differ around the country and that’s what is so great about live theatre. Do you have any ‘must-have’ items you take with you? Eyelashes and eyelash glue.

5

You’re busy all year with Strictly, performing and often choreographing and directing shows as well. What do you like to do during any down time you get? I like to cook, in my own home. I like sleeping in my own bed and cooking in my own home. There’s nothing better to pass the time – whether to test and make up some new recipes or really get stuck into cooking something. I love it, I could cook for days on end. Have you ever been given a piece of advice, or some words of wisdom that have stuck with you? My teacher used to say, “you need to be like a tiger and fearless”, which is of course very apt for this industry. You must be prepared to fail, and as soon as you get used to that you start learning. Personally, I feel that listening to your inner voice is the most important thing, especially when making decisions in this industry. I don’t often rule with my head; I rule with my heart. Finally, what can audiences expect when they come to see you as Miss Hannigan in Annie? Number one – entertainment, number two – a shock! Number three, some great singing, dancing and acting because we’ve got such a brilliantly talented cast, and of course all of the incredible songs that they know and love.

See Annie at The Milton Keynes Theatre Monday 1st – Saturday 6th July Mon-Sat 7.30 pm; Weds & Sat Matinee 2.30pm www.atgtickets./MiltonKeynes Box office: 0844 971 7652 and across the UK until the end of November 2019

HR News from Consensus HR More than half of workers in the UK say they support pay transparency measures such as making monthly income and tax returns publicly available. A YouGov survey on behalf of Indeed found 56% of respondents would favour such moves to reduce pay inequality, trading their privacy for data on how their colleagues are paid. The Institute for Public Policy Research think tank has previously called for transparency measures to help tackle gender, ethnicity and disability pay gaps in the UK. Finland, Sweden and Norway currently impose similar requirements. "Pay is such a contentious issue and people should be paid correctly for the job they are doing regardless of any equality areas such as race, age, gender etc. Making your company’s pay transparent helps to ensure that it does not become an issue and is something we always made sure was done within my previous Hospitality days" comments Matthew from Consensus HR Wahaca has changed its policy on bill dodgers - This has happened after admitting that it had asked a waiter to pay £3 towards a £40 bill when his customers left without paying. The Mexican food chain said waiters would no longer have to pay any element of the bill when this happens, unless a manager suspected the waiter was “complicit” in a walkout, after a customer raised the issue on Twitter. In 2017, Buzzfeed News reported that Zizzi staff could be docked wages or tips for walk-outs or for accidentally undercharging a table. "This was always an issue when I worked in catering and seems to have become more of an issue lately. Unfortunately you will always get the odd person who will do their utmost to not pay but you need to ensure your team has the correct training and that the right systems / procedures are put in place so that everybody is doing their utmost to ensure this is an exception and definitely not the norm. Every incident should be fully investigated and assumptions not made" comments Matthew from Consensus HR Tesco has awarded staff a 10.45% rise in hourly pay over the next two years to £9.30 an hour In September, Tesco will increase minimum hourly pay for store and warehouse workers from £8.42 to £9 an hour, with a second pay rise due in October 2020. The move brings Tesco into line with rates paid by Asda (£9.10) and Sainsbury’s (£9.20). The pay rise will be offset by the loss of an annual cash bonus. "With the ever increasing minimum wage and unemployment at its lowest since 1974, employers are having to look at their teams overall Rewards and Benefits packages and adjust accordingly to ensure they retain and attract the right talent for the job. Company ecruitment now needs to be conducted professionally, using best practice and having the right amount of time to conduct with the right tools, questions and scenarios" comments Matthew from Consensus HR.

Up to 90% of current staff at Channel 4 would rather take redundancy than move to Leeds. As the broadcaster prepares to relocate to its new national HQ, The Guardian reports the number of staff seeking redundancy payments over leaving the capital runs at more than 80% in some departments. Around 300 of Channel 4’s 800 roles are expected to be moved out of the capital this year. The relocation is expected to cost the broadcaster more than £50m. "Relocations tend to never be popular especially when it is quite a distance from where you are currently based. In this case 194.8+ miles and over 4 hours by car! The cost is not cheap either with them saying it will be in excess of £50m due to the generous leavers scheme they are offering" comments Matthew from Consensus HR. YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS SETTLING AN EMPLOYMENT DISPUTE Increasing numbers of employees are being asked to enter into a Settlement Agreement if there is any sort of issue raised by them in relation to their employment, and in particular in respect of its termination. The Agreement is intended to be a legally binding contract to prevent the employee from making a complaint to the Employment Tribunal or Court about any potential breach of their statutory or contractual rights. Why a Settlement Agreement? The purpose of a Settlement Agreement is to provide certainty for both parties. As an employee, you waive your ability to bring claims in return for a payment and/or other agreed benefit. Why does the Employee have to take independent legal advice? It is a legal requirement that for the Settlement Agreement to be legally enforceable, the employee must take independent advice. This requirement is to mitigate the risk of employers putting pressure on employees to waive their rights. What other legal requirements are there? Settlement Agreements are regulated closely by legislation, and to be valid they must: • be in writing • relate to a ‘particular complaint’ or ‘particular proceedings’ • identify the independent adviser (who must have appropriate professional indemnity insurance in respect of the advice they are giving), and • specifically state that the conditions regulating Settlement Agreements have been satisfied What sort of “deal” should the Employee expect? Other than the statutory requirements, the rest of the Settlement Agreement is largely at the discretion of the parties involved and can often be negotiated. The usual terms considered are: • the timing and reason for termination recorded in the agreement • the value of the exit package being offered having regard to salary, the value of any potential claims and any contractual provision for bonuses or deferred awards • an agreed reference • an agreed internal and external announcement, and • a waiver of restrictive covenants in the employment contract Is any settlement tax free? The first £30,000 of a termination payment for loss of office is generally exempt from tax and national insurance contributions. Compensation for losses or injury to feelings resulting from discrimination during employment can also be paid tax free in certain circumstances as long as they can be justified. In addition any payments towards legal costs (including VAT) relating to the termination of employment, and any payments made directly into a pension fund are all tax free. Will I have to pay for the legal advice? The Employer usually contributes towards the legal costs of receiving advice on a Settlement Agreement. The contribution is usually between £300 and 750 plus VAT, and this is usually sufficient for the advice unless you require extensive negotiations. However, please be aware that the employer usually only pays the legal costs contribution if the Settlement Agreement is signed. If you decide not to agree to it, then you will be responsible for your legal costs. If you need more advice on a Settlement Agreement, or assistance in drafting one, please contact Kaajal Nathwani on 020 8 363 4444 or

Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes July

ARIES (March21st-April20th) Big changes will occur on the home front at the beginning of July. The Solar Eclipse on the 2nd suggests you will move to accommodate someone's career. Alternatively, you might relocate after a government agency takes over a piece of property. The upheaval will be significant, but it will ultimately benefit you. Starting fresh will give you a chance to release some old grudges that have been weighing on your heart. On the 16th, a Lunar Eclipse will bring an end to a tense situation with someone at work. Don't panic if you're forced to find another job. It will be much better working for someone who isn't on a power trip. Look for an opportunity that will allow you to exercise your own excellent leadership ability. You're very good at boosting morale, meeting high standards and delivering on promises. As a result, you'll quickly climb the ladder to success.

CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) The Solar Eclipse on the 2nd helps you undergo a radical transformation. You could start your own business, have an image update or take on a new professional role. This shift will possibly put stress on a close relationship. The people you live or work with want to maintain the status quo, but this simply isn't possible. You are being called to fulfil your life's purpose. Embrace every opportunity to improve your circumstances, even if it creates tension in your personal life. It's possible you will relocate on the 16th. That's when a Lunar Eclipse brings closure to a domestic situation. Moving to a different neighbourhood, selling a piece of property or buying a home are among the possibilities. You might decide to move to somewhere smaller. Be ready to find living circumstances that support your new reality. This might mean leaving the country for the city or downsizing your living space. Do what's best for you.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st) Harsh criticism on the 2nd will undermine your confidence. The Solar Eclipse in early July beckons you to acquire more skills and knowledge. Taking a course in a subject that has always fascinated you will give you the spiritual lift you need. It doesn't matter if you're learning to cook, sew, build furniture, make spreadsheets or perform office accounting. You will rise to the challenge with a demanding teacher. Contrary to what a critic says, you're extremely intelligent and capable. Don't let the haters get you down. A Lunar Eclipse on the 16th brings the end to a legal matter. Once this decision has been rendered, you'll be able to lead a more stable, organised life. It will be such a relief to not be constantly on call. If you've been longing to take an overseas trip, schedule one. This journey will have a profound impact on your belief system.

LEO (July24th-August23rd) On the 2nd, a Solar Eclipse will prompt you to adopt a low profile. Demands at work will compromise your health unless you take it easy. Instead of enjoying late nights and loud parties, go home early and fix nutritious meals. Get into bed and let your body replenish. This will allow you to wake up and face the day's challenges with a positive attitude. A staffing shortage may require you to accept more shifts or longer hours. Don't panic; the situation is temporary. The Lunar Eclipse on the 16th could find you reaping rewards for a job well done. You will receive a promotion or offer of employment that transforms your life. Instead of being forced to take whatever assignments you can get, you'll have your choice of opportunities. Your health could improve dramatically at the end of the month, possibly because of a surgical procedure or strict regimen.

GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) The Solar Eclipse on the 2nd brings a new source of income, but there will be challenges involved. A demanding partner will force you to play by a strict set of rules. You'll resent being accountable to this taskmaster, but it can't be helped. If you want to improve your financial situation, you should accept this job with all its frustrations. By sticking to your principles, you'll establish yourself as a highly capable person who knows how to turn a profit. On the 16th, the Lunar Eclipse brings an end to an intimate relationship. Someone who has been struggling with an addiction needs to undergo rehabilitation. Don't let their obsessions drag you down. Although you don't want to leave your loved one in their hour of need, it may be the only way they see what needs to be done. Even then, they still may be too stubborn to choose health over substance abuse.

VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) The Solar Eclipse on the 2nd will draw influential people into your social circle. A romantic partner or someone close won't approve of your new friends. They'll be threatened by their influence in your life. Don't let your loved one's misgivings interfere with these new alliances. You have an opportunity to improve your standing. By joining forces with a powerful group, you'll be able to fulfil your creative potential. On the 16th, a Lunar Eclipse will bring an end to an artistic venture. A respected critic will champion your work, helping you earn fame and acclaim. It's difficult for a naturally modest person like you to be heaped with praise. You'll be suspicious of all the favourable remarks about your work. Put your suspicions aside and let this praise sink into your bones. You have worked hard and have earned these accolades. This is your reward for taking your natural talent to a whole new level.

10

temptation to maintain the status quo. Give away some of personal power to your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. Trying to control your other half is making you both miserable. Celebrate their accomplishments, encourage their independence and follow their lead. You will be pleasantly surprised. On the 16th, the Lunar Eclipse brings a close to a prominent role. Leaving this position will give you more time to do the things you love. Don't feel compelled to fill your days with work and chores. Instead, venture outdoors. Begin a creative project. Indulge your sensual side. You've always been the useful, productive one in your group. Keeping your nose to the grindstone made you feel worthy. Summon your courage and turn away from the work pile. You've earned the right to rest, relax and reflect on the future.

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) An interesting career opportunity could come your way on the 2nd, courtesy of a Solar Eclipse. Although you welcome the chance to get ahead, you are worried this job will take you far from home. It may be necessary to relocate to another part of the country. Living a long distance from family may be a blessing in disguise. Too often, you try to impress your loved ones instead of pursuing your own desires. Getting some physical distance from them will lead to emotional growth. Embrace this opportunity to change. Your dependence on a habit will come to an end on the 16th. That's when the Lunar Eclipse will give you the courage to break away from a person or activity that fed your insecurities. Instead of turning to them for solace, you'll learn how to cope with problems in a healthy way. You're much stronger than you think. Break off a troubled alliance.

AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) A new job is coming your way on the 2nd, but it will throw you off balance. Normally, you're confident about your professional abilities. This position will make you realise you lack essential skills. Instead of panicking, strengthen your resolve. The Solar Eclipse at the beginning of July will help you acquire some undoubted abilities. Don't be afraid to ask your boss for additional training or taking a course after hours. Be open to growing, changing and improving. Pride is your worst enemy at the start of the month. By the 16th, a Lunar Eclipse will help you conquer a persistent fear. Your fundamental distrust of the establishment has stopped you from realising your full potential. Instead of avoiding a government official, manager or politician, ask for their help. They'll help you gain access to fundamental resources. We're here to help one another. Don't insist being a lone wolf when you can be supported by the pack.

SCORPIO (Oct24th-Nov22nd) The opportunity to expand your horizons will arrive on the 2nd, thanks to a Solar Eclipse. Going on an overseas trip, taking a course of study or launching a new and exciting personal project are all possibilities. You will feel like a fish out of water throughout this journey. Being uncomfortable will help you grow and change. You're about to see just how privileged you really are. Working alongside people who are in a more vulnerable position will make you more compassionate, sympathetic and caring. Being receptive to the unfamiliar will work to your advantage at the beginning of the month. The Lunar Eclipse on the 16th changes your outlook. Recently, you've been cynical about power and authority. When a respected and responsible figure person comes to your rescue, your ideas will change. Instead of being suspicious of people in charge, you'll look past their job titles and evaluate them on their individual merits. If someone has a track record of being capable, they are trustworthy.

PISCES (February20th-March20th) Friends won't approve of a creative project or romantic relationship on the 2nd. That's when a Solar Eclipse forces you to choose between being happy and being popular. Stop trying to impress people who want to control your life. As soon as you start listening to your instincts, you'll become much more confident about your choices. When others criticise your choices, you'll simply shrug, laugh and continue on your path. This will be incredibly empowering. The Lunar Eclipse on the 16th brings an end to an abusive association. Although a friendship began as a positive influence, it has devolved into a power struggle. Stop letting an intimidating person put you down. Their hostility has its roots in jealousy. You shouldn't feel defensive about your breakthroughs and good fortune. All the abundance that has come to you is the result of hard work and a positive attitude. Stay positive and keep moving towards the light.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec21st) A Solar Eclipse on the 2nd invites you to be more generous with an intimate partner. You've always prized your freedom, but if you're going to enjoy the benefits of a close relationship, you have to open your heart and share your resources. Someone trustworthy and reliable does deserve your financial support. If you're living together or married, pool your resources. Don't make them live on a tight budget when they could benefit from your income. A Lunar Eclipse on the 16th will put an end to an ethical dilemma. Justice will be served to a bullying, oppressive personality who has been abusing their power. This decision will cause you to breathe a sigh of relief. This tyrant has forced you to walk on eggshells. Once they leave the scene, your productivity will soar. You'll also become much more creative. It's easy to brainstorm when you're not afraid of reprisals.

Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes August

ARIES (March21st-April20th) August gets off to a romantic start on the 1st, when the New Moon puts you on the path to love. If you're single, you will meet someone special at a religious, cultural or educational event. Keep your ears open for someone with an attractive accent. Are you in a relationship? Give your amour a token of your esteem. Booking a trip to a country that has always fascinated you both is strongly advised. Nothing spices up a romance like a change of scenery. On the 15th, the Full Moon will put strain on your social circle. Someone who has been taking advantage of your generosity will reveal their true colours. Parting ways will come as a profound relief. Another New Moon falls on the 30th, resulting in an exciting job opportunity. Don't worry if you're expected to work with hi-tech equipment. You'll catch on quickly after taking a crash course.

CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) A well paid position could come your way during the opening days of August, thanks to the enriching New Moon on the 1st. Any work involving luxury goods, entertainment or gambling will significantly raise your income. If you're happy with your current job, think about making an investment in any of these industries. The payoff will be substantial. A stressful Full Moon on the 15th will make you vulnerable. Someone will take advantage of you when your guard is down. The sense of betrayal will be strong. Instead of putting yourself in such a precarious position again, it may be better to end this relationship altogether. On the 30th a second New Moon will inspire you to pursue a childhood dream. Stop telling yourself it's too late to achieve a lofty goal. If you can conceive something at the end of the month, you can achieve it. Summon every ounce of willpower.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st) The New Moon on the 1st invites you to improve your domestic situation. If you've been looking for a place to live, this is the best time of the entire year to find one. Chances are you'll discover the perfect abode in a glamorous neighbourhood. Being able to walk to shops, restaurants and parks will help you feel connected to the outside world. If you're happy with where you live, you may be welcoming a baby, elderly relative or roommate to your household. This addition will cultivate a joyous atmosphere; greet them with open arms. Your career will require your attention on the 15th, due to an anxious Full Moon. It's possible your boss will quit unexpectedly, causing more responsibilities to be heaped onto your plate. You might have to skip a child's game, recital or performance for the sake of work in midAugust. The second New Moon on the 30th invites you to relax and enjoy sensual pleasures.

LEO (July24th-August23rd) On the 1st, the New Moon will prompt you to change your image in a dramatic way. Take this opportunity to update your hairstyle, overhaul your wardrobe and go for a whole new look. You will be very happy with the results. Stepping into a prominent role is another possibility. You'll enjoy basking in the spotlight and showcasing your talent. On the 15th, the Full Moon will put great strain on a close relationship. You won't be able to coax the people you love and like most into doing things your way. As a result, it may feel like you're undermining each other's dreams. Think carefully whether you want to continue this alliance. A second New Moon on the 30th attracts a fantastic moneymaking opportunity. Being able to work overseas will be a welcome change of pace. Alternatively, you may be able to travel extensively as part of a new job.

GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) VIRGO (August24th-September23rd)

The opening days of August promise to be very busy, thanks to an active New Moon on the 1st. Take this opportunity to run errands, catch up on correspondence and reconnect with friends. If you're single and someone offers to set you up on a blind date, accept. You'll be delightfully surprised by this encounter. Are you already in a relationship? Your amour will have wonderful news that is cause for celebration. The Full Moon on the 15th will bring a disappointing legal decision. Although you'll be angered by this verdict, it's important to pick yourself up and dust yourself off. Dwelling on bitter feelings will drive opportunity from your door. Moving to a beautiful place is a distinct possibility on the 30th. That's when another supportive New Moon will help you find a home with gorgeous landscaping. If you have no intention of moving, this would be a good time to make some upgrades.

The opening days of August invite you to kick back and relax. That's because a restful New Moon rises on the 1st. Take this opportunity to go on vacation or retreat to a tranquil place where you can hear yourself think. If you don't have the funds to go away, a staycation can be satisfying, especially if you don't check messages from work. The Full Moon on the 15th will force you to take better care of your health. Sugar, fat and alcohol can put a terrible strain on your system. Choose fresh produce, lean proteins and whole grains instead. By the time the second New Moon rises on the 30th, you'll be in top form. Your enhanced good looks and natural charm will attract exciting opportunities. The chance to take an overseas trip will fall into your lap. Make sure your passport is up to date with the approach of September.

14

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd)

There's a good chance your partner will receive a big windfall that indirectly benefits you. Take this opportunity to indulge in some creature comforts. On the 15th, the Full Moon will force you to make an ethical decision. It may be necessary to leave a job where you are being pressured to do underhanded or even criminal things. The law is on your side at the end of the month. Contact a lawyer or police officer on the 30th, when a second New Moon will help you get justice. Sitting idly while others are being abused is not an option. Speak truth to power.

Joining a club, team or organisation is strongly advised at the beginning of August. That's when the New Moon will put you in contact with some creative people. Working alongside fellow artists will fuel your own imagination. If you've been trying to get a new project off the ground, join forces with the people in your group. There is power in numbers. On the 15th, an anxious Full Moon will prompt you to take a second look at a romantic relationship. Someone you once adored could reveal themselves as selfish. You have no desire to build a life with someone who distains your love of beauty and luxury. Instead of trying to make things work, it may be better to walk away. Another New Moon on the 30th will enhance your intuition. By listening to your instincts, you'll be able to become emotionally and financially independent. Embrace your freedom.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-February19th) The opening days of August are ideal for getting engaged or married, thanks to the loving New Moon on the 1st. If you're already in a serious relationship, take this opportunity to lavish your partner with affection. A beautiful gift, a thoughtful gesture or a personal sacrifice will be wellreceived. Although you have difficulty expressing your emotions, it's important to wear your heart on your sleeve at this time. On the 15th, the Full Moon will shed light on some embarrassing shortcomings. If someone challenges your bad behaviour, don't be defensive. Listen carefully to the criticism and let it enlighten you. Breaking a terrible habit or adopting a healthier approach will improve all your relationships. A second New Moon will rise on the 30th, suggesting you may receive a financial windfall. Use money from an inheritance, legal settlement or royalty payment to buy a home or make some improvements to your existing abode.

SCORPIO (Oct24th-Nov22nd) The New Moon on the 1st brings a lucrative career opportunity. Getting paid handsomely for a job you love is very possible. If you're happy with your current position, you could be given a promotion. You'll achieve tremendous success from working with overseas clients. If you've been unemployed, seek opportunities in the entertainment industry; you will strike gold. On the 15th, the Full Moon will force you to come to terms with a painful family situation. Be ready to turn your back on a relative whose inconsiderate behaviour makes you feel used and abused. Another New Moon on the 30th marks a festive party. Be sure to attend this gathering, even if you're tired and irritable. Your annoyance will turn to joy as soon as you walk through door. Prepare to make at least one interesting friend. It’s Salad time Now we’re firmly in summer, salad season is here and we know a lot of you are enjoying your healthy home grown leaves from the veggie patch and window sill. The brilliant thing about these plants is that they’re really easy to grow and if you’ve got a suitable variety, they’ll continue to provide you with leaves which you can utilise for months to come! For many a salad is a nice side dish decoration and nothing more, for others it’s the “optional” part of your meal. We firmly believe that a good salad can be a truly amazing thing, especially by adding lots of grated veg, cheese, egg, fish and it can all be topped off perfectly with a lovely, simple homemade dressing. Forget limp iceberg lettuce and a few lowly tomatoes, a true salad should be a feast of colour that is fresh and crisp and full of healthy nutrients. If you can’t grow salad, or local ‘fur and feather’ have eaten your crop, our shops are now overflowing with a whole spectrum of salad leaves in all colours, shapes and sizes, coupled with fresh, sweet and juicy British tomatoes, crunchy cucumber and a host of other delights – a salad need not be a dreary affair. There are more than 60 varieties of lettuce and salad leaves grown in the UK and we are growing and consuming more salad than ever before, so if you don’t like one leaf, there’s bound to be another that’s worth trying! More salad facts: 1. Lettuce was first eaten by the ancient kings of Persia 2,500 years ago. The ancient Greeks and Romans thought it helped you to have a good night’s sleep. 2. Christopher Columbus introduced lettuce to the new world and from there lettuce in the United States went into cultivation. 3. The 17th century horticulturist, John Evelyn, introduced the vegetable to England. 4. The first supplies of Iceberg lettuce arrived on British shores in the mid 1970’s from the USA where it was developed, but it was not until 1984 that British growers truly mastered its growing techniques. 5. In Britain we eat less salad per head than the rest of Europe and the USA. To make a meal of it, why not throw together a tasty Caesar salad with some succulent free-range chicken on top, or bring a bit of Far Eastern promise to the table by whipping up a spicy Thai salad? Stuck for ideas? MakeMoreOfSalad.com is packed with recipe ideas, hints and buying tips to help inspire your salad days.

It’s Strawberry Time! With all the wet weather that has been around it’s hard to believe that summer is really here! Even if this weather isn’t overly convincing, you know it’s summer when you find yourself gorging on delicious Strawberries. There’s plenty of strawberries to buy and eat, pick your own, or you can have a go at growing your own. Like nearly all fruit, you can find the freshest, ripest, strawberries at their best, from either your garden, fresh from the field or form your local farm shop. They’re rarely found in the supermarket where shelf life is considered more important than taste. Here are some fun facts about strawberries: 1. Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in the spring. 2. Most supermarket strawberries are the El Santa variety specially bred to be picked before ripe and last a long time on the shelf. 3. Roughly 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten during the Wimbledon Championships 4. Wimbledon may have 64 players, who’re seeded, in the competition, but did you know there are about 200 seeds on every strawberry?! 5. A 100g serving of strawberries contains just 50 calories and 0g of fat! 6. Strawberries can help whiten your teeth? The acids in the fruit help to remove stains. 7. They are full of a special substance called ellagic acid which can help fight cancers. 8. Also full of flavonoids, which form part of the strawberry’s red colour. They are known to help reduce cholesterol from clogging up the heart’s arteries. 9. You might be amazed at how much Vitamin C is in strawberries! We only need eight strawberries to consume more vitamin C than an orange or 140% of our daily recommended amount. 10. The strawberry and raspberry plants, are members of the rose family. 11. Eating strawberries, which are rich in nitrate, can increase the flow of blood & oxygen to the muscles by 7%. This prevents muscle fatigue, making exercise easier. 12. Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside

Will Learning to Cook Improve Health? If everyone knew how to cook would we all become healthier and help reduce NHS, and taxpayer costs? Let me explain: I have just enjoyed a Danish Pastry with my morning coffee but half way through wondered what additives I had just consumed. As I make my own bread I realised that to make ‘pastry’ the recipe would require lots of butter or, worse, palm oil. If I actually looked at the list of ingredients and had a go at making Danish Pastry I doubt I would want to eat them again. Likewise the amount of sugar and butter required to make biscuits would completely put me off eating biscuits. Even home-made ones that use butter instead of the cheaper, and nasty, palm oil used in nearly all well known bought biscuits! I am convinced that it is the actual process of cooking that makes us change and this should carry through to our health. Perhaps visiting an abattoir would have the same effect on meat eaters and reduce global warming as more people switch to a lower carbon plant-based diet? We now live in a time when we have become disconnected from where our food comes from and how to cook healthy meals. It is no wonder that the consumption of ultra processed food is on the increase and NHS spend on food related disease is still rising from the current 20% of total NHS spend. Obesity – the cost to NHS is now £27billion, yes billion! Just like climate emergency at BigBarn we see decreasing health as an emergency. And why we have a petition to get Food Growing, Cooking, and Nutrition on the school curriculum. Food growing because kids, and even teachers, will be more interested in cooking if they have grown and harvested the ingredients. We also see growing food as the best way to reduce the cost of this initiative as over half our schools already have a veg patch, or garden, and there will be no need for schools to set up class room kitchens if the food grown can be taken home to be cooked with the family. This will have the ‘double whammy’ effect of the rest of the family also discovering the joys of cooking and healthy food.

If you agree please sign our petition here, and get cooking!

The Rise of Chilean Wines It’s not just European countries that are dominating the wine scene with France, Italy, and Spain being the top three wine-producing countries, there is a new group of key players in the international wine scene. One of the rising stars that has left its mark in the trade is the scenic country of Chile. Chile is the 7th largest wine-producing and 5th largest wine-exporting country in the world. An extraordinary achievement if you consider there were only a hand full of producers in the 1970s. Chile’s winemaking tradition dates back to the mid-16th century. During the first couple of centuries of Chilean viticulture, Spanish law restricted local winemaking in the country, requiring the South American nation to purchase most of its wine from Spain. But the early Chilean vignerons were a tough bunch. They mostly ignored the Spanish order that limited wine production and export. While the country may have been under Spanish rule for centuries, Chilean viticulture is more similar to French, particularly Bordeaux, winemaking. In the early 19th century, many of the rich local vignerons travelled to France to learn more about wine production. By the mid-1800s, vine growers were already planting varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Carménère. The Highs and Lows of the 20th Century Up until the end of the 19th century, the country’s wine trade was operating at full speed. However, threats of war and transportation problems made it difficult to export wine. Add to that high taxes and political instability, and what you have is a massive slowdown in the progress of the Chilean wine industry. Though the local market remained unaffected, wine export definitely dwindled. Fortunately, the country experienced a wine renaissance of sorts in the 1980s, when local winemakers began using modern viticultural practices, including new technology and better wine storage systems. This led to a resurgence in export sales in the 1990s. By the start of the 21st century, Chile had become the third largest wine exporter to the United States. A Bright Future for Chilean Wines Today, Chile is considered one of the most important global producers of fine wine and spirits. In 2007 alone, its export industry surpassed the one billion pound mark, with its biggest sales found in the markets of the UK, Canada and the USA. Last year, the South American country also produced over 10 million hectoliters of wine, making it one of the top global wine producers. On a whole you get very good quality for a lot less money and no branded regions (Bordeaux etc.) are pushing prices beyond affordability making this country very appealing.
