Exclusive Interview with Andy McCluskey of OMD Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are an English electronic music band formed in the Wirral, Merseyside in 1978. The outfit was founded by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. OMD released their influential debut single, "Electricity", in 1979, and gained popularity throughout Europe with the 1980 anti-war song "Enola Gay". The band achieved broader recognition via their seminal album Architecture & Morality (1981) and its three singles, all of which were international hits.

The Sticks caught up with singer and bass guitarist Andy McCluskey ahead of a summer of live appearances. How did you personally get into music? Oh my word, you know what, it was a hobby. I am a failed archaeologist and failed artist, the music was third choice and it ended up being my life for 40 years. It was just a crazy thing, Paul Humphreys and I went to primary school together, we just used to make weird noises in his mother’s back room, which even our friends thought were horrible and somehow it became pop music. Don’t know how!!! Before OMD you had many names? Yes Equinox, Pegasus and, the short-lived Hitlerz Underpantz. There are not many people who can claim to have been in Hitler’s Underpants and I best not go any further with that one. It is a big step from wanting to be in a band to actually being in a band, how did that happen? Paul and I had a mutual love of the more experimental and weird music of the 70’s, we were huge fans of Kraftwerk. We had no money and could not afford synthesisers as they were very expensive then. We started out with my second hand, left handed bass guitar, that I played upside down and I still have the strings upside down on my bass to this day; Paul used to make things that made weird noises, we did not even have a keyboard. We used to experiment and make odd noises and drive the neighbours insane but slowly and surely we started to distil our noises down to melodies and singing and finally, one day in 1978 we dared to ask a local club in Liverpool if we could come play our weird music. There was just 2 of us and a tape recorder and they said “Yes” and to our amazement they asked us to do another concert and that’s how it all started. We were OMD then as we were going to play a punk club and we wanted everyone to know that we were not punk or rock, we were different, so we pick the most preposterous name you could possible think of and it did not matter because it was only going to be for one concert.

4

Where did the name Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark come from? I have to claim responsibility for that, it was written on my bedroom wall. I used to use my bedroom wall as a notebook for crazy ideas, lyrics and possible song titles and it was actually the idea for a title for a song. We thought that’s bonkers lets have that. It gets peoples attention, maybe not for the right reasons. I have never been asked that question before so thanks for asking it. The 1980’s was a cosmopolitan time for music with punk, guitar bands, new romantics and electronic music, why do you think it has been so enduring? I suppose to be honest there was some great and very catchy music, although some people laugh at the fashion and the back combed hairstyles. A lot of the artists wrote their own songs and I think that was something that was different in the 80’s, also a lot of the bands created themselves rather than be manufactured. It was the decade of not having manufactured boy bands. Is there a new album in the offing? Yes there is, we have made two albums since we have reformed, we are loving doing it but we know the reality is that we are not going to sell millions and trouble the top end of the charts like we used to. We are still conceited enough to think that we have some good music in us. The new album is out later this year along with a full tour but before that all summer we are doing festivals which are a different beast; because when we do festival we just do our hits. When you play outside at festivals you have to make somewhat grander gestures on a bigger stage, it is a very different way of performing, and we are also not trying to convert people to our new music, we just concentrate on having a party really and we are very fortunate that we can fill up an hour completely with hit singles so that’s what we do. When you were growing up who did you admire musically? In my mid teens there were people like David Bowie, Roxy Music and the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed. I mentioned the festivals and the funny thing is I am going to be a bit of a fan boy when we play Flashpoint because on our day on Sunday 16th July is Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, I was such a fan when I was about 12. Where is the best place you have played? There is always a certain extra edge playing in your own home town, whenever we play in Liverpool we are always a bit more nervous than we normally would be and then the nervous energy gets released on stage and it becomes quite intense. The home town gig can not be beaten. Away from OMD, in the late 80’s /early 90’s you founded a band called “Atomic Kitten”? That is correct.

5

Very different to OMD? No not at all!!! Three beautiful teenage girls, and some crusty old men in their late 50s, very similar indeed. No it was a dramatic career change. In the mid 90s it seemed like being in a synth band was very out of fashion, felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall and just had this mad idea of writing songs for somebody else. I always thought that 3 piece girl groups were the best type of pop groups The Supremes, The Ronettes even Bananarama. So that was my crazy idea and amazingly we had good fun and hit the jackpot and they are still working now. I spoke to Kerry Katona on the phone last year and apologised to her for inflicting fame upon her because I had no idea what it was going to be like. In the 80s we did not have the “Hello” magazines, paparazzi and that sort of thing. I remember a few years ago walking down the lane where my studio was and MTV were doing a thing about Kerry and how she got into Atomic Kitten; the entire world stopped and was photographing her and asking her for her autograph, I had no idea how famous she was, she could not move so I took the opportunity to apologise and she told me I was forgiven. Is there a song you listen to and wish you had written? Yes loads but I would have loved to have written “Heroes” by David Bowie, that is a song. Away for the music business, what do you do to unwind? I don’t live 24/7 in the music industry now which is great so I get to enjoy being with the people I love, smell the roses, I love wandering in the countryside and the opportunity to travel so quite simple pleasures really. Music is also still my hobby, if I want to express myself it is always done musically. We still enjoy performing and it is the wonderful thing that now we don’t have to do it all day, every day. When you are fortunate to be successful the music business can be a selfish mistress, as in you’re wanted here there and everywhere and there is no time for other people in your life. Now we are fortunate enough to get a nice balance between doing what we love doing musically but also spending time with those we love, it is great. What is the oddest thing you have received from a fan? Probably things I can’t tell you about. If people read an interview and they give you things that they have heard you liked. The first time we went to Japan all we had we eaten for a whole week was sushi and no hot food but when we left for the airport there was about 100 Japanese fans turned up all bringing cold sushi, it was just like no more!!! It was a lovely gesture but too much of a good thing.

Three Digital Opportunities for HR Technology is taking over! Wherever we turn, processes are becoming digital – generally making life more instant and convenient. HR is no exception. A new report from Econsultancy highlights how HR professionals are adapting to the changes offered by the digital revolution. The biggest area of change is proactivity. Rather than simply using technology to monitor and review operations, HR professionals are embracing the wider opportunities that technology brings. Optimising customer experience (CX) was viewed as the greatest opportunity for organisations. The report states that: “CX is also driving change in the processes, structures and practices across organisations as a whole – including HR. “Whether it is finding ways to reinforce a collaborative culture or breaking down department barriers, the implications for HR are essentially a greater need to support cross-company collaboration and to facilitate change.” This creates three exciting opportunities for business owners and HR professionals: Three Digital Opportunities for HR 1. Digital Literacy - One of the biggest opportunities for HR professionals will be improving the digital literacy within their organisations. 71% of survey participants said that business leaders should be technology-literate. The reality? Just 28% deemed that the leadership within their organisation were digitally literate. 2. Employee Experience - Employee experience across the organisation is a core component of digital transformation within a success business. The report states that: “It is about how organisations respond appropriately to the challenges and opportunities that the digital world creates, or in other words, how they reshape the way in which teams work, collaborate and behave.” HR professionals will have a key role in addressing these team issues. 3. Leadership Qualities - With a changing perception of leadership qualities, HR roles increasing develop softer skills within the workplace – involving activities such as flexibility, adaptability and curiosity, together with the ability to embrace change. But – traditional skills such as being commercial, inspirational and action-orientated are also required. HR professional need to blend the two – developing individuals to mix empathy with driving progress forwards. Every employer has the chance to make the most of these HR opportunities. The first step? Review your HR policy regarding employee and team development. How can they be changed to make the most of the digital opportunities that exist? From recruitment to performance management and team development … the potential to increase efficiency and engagement exists. To find out more, contact Matthew at Consensus HR. YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS DO YOU NEED TO MARRY TO PROTECT YOURSELF?

Most people make the choice about whether to get married based on their feelings (for their partner) and the costs (of that special day). You may prefer to avoid the expense and hassle of organising such an event, and there is no longer any stigma in society about cohabiting as an unmarried couple – even if you have children together. However, there is a potentially dangerous misapprehension that upon separation you will be treated the same as if you had been married. This is simply incorrect. English law does not recognise “common law husband and wife” and therefore on separation you may be in a precarious financial position:•

if your home is registered at HM Land Registry in your partner’s sole name it can be very difficult for you to prove you have any right to remain living there and/or that you have any financial interest in that property

you are not entitled to any ongoing financial support (e.g. maintenance payments) from your partner, even if they have supported you financially for years during your relationship

you have no claim over any assets or pension in the name of your partner - even if they promised they were being built up for you too

If you have children together, there are some financial claims you may be able to make on behalf of your children to ensure they have a secure home and your partner pays child maintenance. However, this may be temporary housing so that once the children become independent you lose the use of it. Of course one option is to get down the aisle as quickly as possible ….. but there is an alternative, more cost-effective approach. You can agree terms for a simple Deed of Trust or Cohabitation Agreement - which can set out now what would happen if you ever separated in the future, and clarify what would happen to the home you share. Such documents can save a lot of money and emotional upset at a later date if unfortunately the relationship comes to an end. Be more assertive than usual and don't take no for an answer; this is your chance to get your agenda met. On the 9th, you could experience some physical problems. Get a medical consultation for a nagging ache or pain. Working behind the scenes toward the middle of the month will be instructive. Team up with an unconventional leader who is more interested in innovation than tradition. The New Moon on the 24th is ideal for starting a job or assuming another role. Your ideas will be well received by your colleagues. Word of your talent will spread, making you a hot commodity in both your personal and professional lives. If you've ever wanted to start your own business, this will be the perfect time to take the plunge. Integrate your name into the title and logo; it's the key to your success.

Doing work around the house will be a good way to spend your time at the start of June. Repairing or replacing appliances, upgrading plumbing systems and checking out faulty wiring. The Full Moon on the 9th will bring a disappointing result with a legal or official matter. Resist the temptation to hide away from the world. You'll get over things more quickly by surrounding yourself with supportive friends and relatives. Avoid getting into an argument with an expert in the middle of the month or you'll alienate a potential ally. On the 24th, the New Moon will give you a chance to promote a brilliant idea and win support from someone who can make all the difference to your plans. As the month draws to a close, you'll have to reach a consensus with a partner. Trying to talk logic to a business associate or a loving partner will be an exercise in futility.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st)

LEO (July24th-August23rd)

You'll be getting lots of admiring glances at the beginning of June, when your natural charisma will be powerfully accentuated. On the 9th, the Full Moon will bring about an unexpected challenge to your finances. You'll have to dip into savings or go into debt to put things right. The New Moon on the 24th will prompt you to take a class, learn a skill or begin a writing project. This venture will give you lots of intellectual stimulation and improve your outlook. As July approaches, you'll be forced to stick with a dull routine, despite your desire to branch out. Instead of neglecting your responsibilities, make extra efforts to fulfil them. Proving your reliability will pave the way for opportunity. You're being put to the test.

Your ideas will be well-received at the beginning of June making this a great time to give a presentation or make a proposal. Money will be tight, so be prepared to work with a limited budget. The Full Moon on the 9th will force you to reconsider a romantic relationship. You may decide your partner is more trouble than they are worth. The middle of the month will find you busy with a creative project and so there won't be much time for social pursuits. On the 24th, the New Moon will give you a welcome chance to rest, relax and recharge your batteries. Head for a tranquil place by the water where you can hear yourself think. As the month winds down, you may decide to leave an oppressive job. Don't jeopardise your health for the sake of money. You could find a better job at a government agency, university or hospital.

VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) GEMINI (May22nd-June21st) The start of June will be stimulating on the home as well as the work fronts. Your love life could suffer while you're busy running between your place and the office. It's important to give professional matters your full attention; doing a great job will result in a pay rise, promotion or both. On the 9th, the Full Moon could cause a smouldering family argument to erupt. You'll have to have a talk with your amour about treating your relatives in a more respectful manner. Alternatively, you might have to defend your romantic partner from a hyper critical family member. You'll have to spread yourself thinly at the middle of the month, when your boss will need you to review some very detailed documents. The New Moon on the 24th will bring welcome relief from your labours. Take this opportunity to attend a barbecue or garden party. You're sure to have some highly entertaining conversations at this get together.

People will be very receptive to your ideas at the beginning of the month. Take this opportunity to go for a job interview, ask for a date or submit creative work for review. The Full Moon on the 9th will put a great deal of strain on a close relationship. You may decide to part from an impractical person who often fails to keep their promises. During the second half of June, you'll have to follow a difficult and demanding set of rules to get ahead. Going against the grain will only end up in you missing out on an opportunity. On the 24th, the New Moon will attract an exciting moneymaking opportunity. Getting paid to solve problems and increase productivity will be the answer to a prayer. The end of the month will tempt you to indulge your sensual side. Play for time and postpone making any expensive purchases. It would be better to conserve your resources to cover a surprise expense.

10

redecorate a drab room, begin work on a book or take up a new interest. On the 9th, an embarrassing secret will come to light. Instead of denying the truth, own up to it. This will allow you to repair some broken relationships and make a fresh start. As incredible as it seems, there is a silver lining to this cloud. You will be doing battle with a bureaucratic agency during the middle of the month. No matter how many facts and figures you produce it is unlikely that you will make any headway. Turn to your best friend or romantic partner for comfort on the 24th, when the New Moon will give extra support to close relationships. As the July approaches, you will have difficulty convincing someone to follow your plan. Try not to take their decision personally.

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) The opening days of June will be very romantic. If you're single, you could fall head over heels in love with little or no warning. Are you in a relationship? Your partner will get surprising news that prompts a string of celebrations. The Full Moon on the 9th could bring some disappointing news about a job; your work may not be as well received as expected. Pick yourself up and dust yourself and make a fresh start around the middle of the month. Working with a partner will fill the gaps of your knowledge and teach you valuable skills. On the 24th, the New Moon will bring an exciting opportunity to climb the ladder of success. Take a job in one of the caring professions. Getting paid to improve other people's lives will be very satisfying. As June turns into July, you'll have to postpone work to deal with domestic responsibilities. Finding care for a relative could command the lion's share of your attention.

AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) You will make a splash on social media at the beginning of the month. This is a great time to promote a product, post a dating profile or launch a blog. The Full Moon on the 9th will force you to back out of a social engagement. There simply won't be the funds to go on an expensive outing. An educational opportunity will fall into your lap in the middle of the month. Take full advantage of it. On the 24th, the New Moon will help you make headway with a health regime. Following a better diet, taking daily exercise and getting more sleep will make you look and feel much better. As June draws to a close, you'll be torn between a romantic relationship and a friendship. Someone who feels threatened by your partner will try to sabotage your personal life. The sooner you put some distance between you and this troublemaker, the better.

SCORPIO (October24thNovember22nd) You'll have a chance to create long term financial security at the start of June. Be willing to accept a job with plenty of growth opportunity. The salary might be small at first, but it will steadily grow over time. On the 9th, the Full Moon will force you to fight for money that is owed to you. Don't let a charming individual cheat you out of a payment that is rightfully yours. At the middle of the month, you might have to put some expenses on a credit card until your finances begin to improve. The New Moon on the 24th will attract an exciting opportunity to expand your horizons through travel, writing or studying. Toward the end of the month, you will exchange tense words with someone who thinks they know more than you. You're tired of having your expertise brushed aside. Assert your authority.

PISCES (February 20th-March20th) A grant, loan or gift will allow you to make a cherished dream come true at the beginning of June. Don't question your luck; embrace it. To give thanks to the Universe, make a donation to your favourite charity. This will keep the good karma flowing. On the 9th, the Full Moon will put you at the centre of a controversy. You might have to take the blame for someone else's mistake or issue an apology for a wrong move. Swallow your pride and be as gracious as possible. A humble attitude will help you maintain your reputation. The strain will ease on the 24th, when the New Moon invites you to take a vacation. Choose a location that has fascinated you since childhood. Exploring historical and cultural places of interest will be especially fun. If you're single, you'll meet someone special on this trip. Are you in a relationship? You and your amour will benefit from time away from home.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember21st) Friendship could turn to romance at the beginning of the month. If you're already in a relationship, your partner will encourage you to take a life enhancing decision. Follow their advice. The Full Moon on the 9th will force you to take a stand against your family. Don't let your relatives pressurise you into an arrangement that doesn't suit you. The middle of the month warns against being too hard on a romantic partner or business associate. Instead of demanding perfection, take mistakes with a grain of salt. On the 24th, the New Moon will bring a handsome windfall. Use the money from a legal settlement, insurance refund or inheritance for a down payment on a home. Paying off a mortgage is another possibility. Having a secure domestic life will allow you to take risks in other areas. As June turns to July, you'll have to make difficult financial choices. For the Women

It was quite disturbing recently to read of Carol Vorderman’s depression while she was going through the menopause. She spoke to Lorraine on ITV about the ‘blackness’ she felt, waking up feeling there was no point in carrying on. Now she is encouraging people to talk about the menopause because, as she says, ‘it’s just a different chapter in your life’. She sought treatment and soon felt much better and recommends that bespoke HRT should be on the NHS. Zoë Ball also spoke out admitting to an audience at the Leicester Square theatre that she felt hot, hairy and menopausal. Far too many women are suffering in silence and feel confused about whether to use natural remedies to alleviate their hot flushes, vaginal dryness and insomnia, or resort to HRT (which can have side effects and doesn’t work for everyone) or invest in Bio identical hormones, (usually only prescribed in private practice). A report by The British Menopause Society found that many women are too embarrassed to visit a GP and that many are concerned about the health risks associated with HRT. It’s thought that the average age of the menopause in the UK is 51 years, but from forty, there can also be symptoms prior to this, called the perimenopause. The most common and debilitating psychological effects of perimenopause are: • Sleep disturbances • Bouts of unexpected anxiety • Difficulty in concentrating • Forgetfulness • Mood swings One of the best people to look to for advice in this arena is Dr Marilyn Glenville, she has written extensively on the subject and has a recently updated best-selling book ‘New Natural Alternatives to HRT’. She details what is available and suggests that given the right tools, diet nutrition and lifestyle your body can adapt to what we used to call ‘The Change of Life’ naturally. One of the brands who have entered our awards agree with Marilyn. Natures Naturals have developed a new range of drinks that work to help alleviate many of the most uncomfortable symptoms of Perimenopause and Menopause. The FemBev Drink Mixes come in lemon or chocolate flavour which contain pumpkin seeds - a powerful source of

tryptophan, which is an essential amino acid our bodies only get from food sources. It’s also thought to be beneficial to take a Vitamin B-complex multivitamin if you’re also taking in tryptophan, as tryptophan will metabolize to vitamin B3 if your body is deficient, and getting the right B vitamins is not easy through diet alone. Natures Naturals offer a supplement and also Dermabalm which offers soothing relief to dry skin (yet another symptom!) www.naturesnaturals.co.uk One thing is for sure, the more you take care of yourself ‘holistically’ the better your chance of feeling in optimum health. Don’t forget there are some great wellbeing centres in Herts, Beds and Bucks. It’s great to see Carol Vorderman looking so well, and let’s hope the menopause won’t stop Zoë being the party gal we know and love!

AIDEN ON THE HOP: Garden City Brewery Recently I found myself in Letchworth Garden City. As I walked into the Wynd, I noticed the Garden City Brewery and I went in to discover more. The Garden City Brewery is a micro brewery in all concepts and opened for business in June 2016. They brew on site and the stills can be seen if the door is open behind the bar. Further enquiries revealed that the brewery is run by a husband and wife team supported by family and friends. The brewery is open, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so why not pop over and experience one of their unique brews. It was clear from those at the bar that not only was the beer exceptional, the whole ambience was one of good fellow well met; the friendliness comes not only from staff but also customers. Because of the brewery size the choices on offer vary according to each visit, including guest beers from other craft breweries. On this visit I ordered a pint of Molly’s Mild. This proved to be a true dark mild of 3.7 abv. My next visit coincided with Letchworth Chilli festival and as you would expect there was a brew reflecting the occasion; this confirmed there is no limit to the brewer’s invention. The concept of a public house producing its own beer is not new; It is in fact history repeating itself. Having seen the Brewery Shop concept in operation and the Garden City brewery in operation, I feel the future is here. The microbrewery in its current form is learning from history and adding 21st century thinking into how we consume our beer. The bonus is that if you are small, customers feel more valued, which produces that friendly atmosphere associated with craft beers and small breweries festivals. The concept of multi-nationals brewing gallons upon gallons of beer automatically are numbered. I am old enough to remember the heyday of such brewing with Ind Coope’s, Double Diamond. I believe that the traditional pub will be replaced by micro breweries and brewery shops and that’s a prediction I hope comes to fruition. So, if you are in Letchworth Garden City, find your way to The Wynd and take a bit of time to enjoy a real ale in a different way to the traditional public house experience.

Hero Cheese of the Month - Blu '61 Blu '61 is an Italian soft blue cheese prepared with pasteurized cow's milk. The cheese was created in 2011, as a 50th anniversary gift to company owner Antonio and his wife Giuseppina. It is aged over three months during which the wheels are matured in local Raboso Passito IGT wine and cranberries. With a soft and creamy paste, and a thin red rind layered with berries on top, Blu '61 has a very striking, distinctive appearance.

Aromas are of typical blue cheese but are accompanied by sweet and fruity scents of cherry. The pervasive wine flavour balanced by the creaminess of the paste, creates an intensely luscious cheese that goes well with a sweet Italian Passito or any another dessert wine.

This delicious cheese is now available at The Cheese Plate in Buntingford. With over 200 cheeses to choose from you'll be spoilt for choice, so whether you're looking for that one special cheese or want to create the perfect cheeseboard for a dinner party, visit us, where one of our friendly; knowledgeable staff will be able to help you select the right cheese for your requirements.

Tomatoes Tomatoes are the key ingredient to summer. We have them on BBQ’s, salads, cook with them, fry them, how ever you like them and we all know a perfectly ripe tomato can’t be beaten especially if it is ugly! Yes, ignore the perfectly round red ones and go for foreign looking tomatoes. The general rule is; the uglier they are the better. Try growing your own so you eat them fresh and naturally ripe. And they are good for us. Brimming over with vitamins A, C and E, as well as the antioxidant lypocene, which helps to mop up damaging free radicals in the body that can harm our cells, tomatoes are not only delicious, but wonderfully healthy too. Six cool facts about tomatoes: 1. Tomatoes can be yellow, pink, purple, black and even white 2. Walt Disney World Resort has the largest single tomato plant in the world covering 56.73 metres sq, bigger than an Olympic size swimming pool 3. Heinz Tomato Ketchup has a speed limit. If the sauce pours at more than 0.028mph in the Heinz factory it’s considered too runny and rejected 4. La Tomatina is an annual festival in Spain, where people throw 150,000 tomatoes at each other. 5. The largest ever tomato on record was picked in Oklahoma, USA in 1986. It weighed over 3.5kg 6. There are around 10,000 varieties of tomatoes worldwide Best of all, now’s the time to get your hands on the very best – beautiful British tomatoes grown outdoors in the sunshine! Or grow your own! You really can taste the difference when British tomatoes hit the shelves. Expect crunchy skins and sweet, fresh flesh that’s ripe for the picking. Even if you’re not a fan of sinking your teeth straight into a ripe tomato, you can still enjoy the many pleasures they bring to salads, soups and sauces to get your fill of all the good stuff! Farm shops and grocers are a fantastic place to find the very freshest tomatoes and, if you’re lucky, you might even find a pick your own near you.
