RICH HALL Rich Hall’s Hoedown Interview by James Rampton
To emphasise just how much they are into his new show, “Rich Hall’s Hoedown”, the American comedian’s many fans are turning up at venues dressed in a full cowboy hat and cowboy boot ensemble. They are truly entering into Rich’s Wild West spirit. Yee haw! This electrifying show, which culminates in an infectious celebration of Americana and a hilarious, foot-stomping hoedown, has already really caught fire up and down the country. And the great news is that “Rich Hall’s Hoedown” is coming to a venue near you very soon. The brilliant stand-up is continuing his extensive nationwide tour throughout 2019. You are advised to book tickets as quickly as possible because they are already flying off the shelves. Chatting to us during a hiatus in the tour, Rich proves a richly entertaining interviewee. He is fiercely intelligent and possesses a razor-sharp wit. It is a joy to spend time with him. Even though he is widely loved by British audiences, the modest Rich can scarcely believe how well this tour has gone. “The response has been astounding,” reveals the comic, who was also enjoyed huge acclaim and won the Perrier Award at the 2000 Edinburgh Festival as his bourbon-soaked, country and western-singing Tennessean alter ego, Otis Lee Crenshaw “I’m enjoying doing this particular show so much. The reaction has been very rousing. People come up to me afterwards and say, ‘I’d seen you on TV, but I didn’t realise you were this funny’. That’s the most satisfying response. At the risk of turning into the Willie Nelson of comedy, I don’t want to stop doing this show!” 4
The critics have been equally enthusiastic about “Rich Hall’s Hoedown”. The Guardian called it, “Blissfully funny,” while The Scotsman declares that it is, “As close as it gets to a guaranteed good show.” Rich has had an enormously successful TV career, shining in such comedy shows as QI, Have I Got News For You, Live at the Apollo and Never Mind the Buzzcocks, as well as producing such lauded documentaries as Rich Hall’s Countrier Than You, Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match, Rich Hall’s Cattle Drive, Rich Hall’s Gone Fishing and Otis Lee Crenshaw – London Not Tennessee. Rich’s most recent documentary Rich Hall’s Working For The American Dream aired on BBC Four in July and was met with the same high acclaim as previous documentaries. For all that, stand-up remains his first love. Rich, whose latest audio CD, Working Dog, is currently available to buy or download from store.offthekerb.co.uk, affirms that, “I just love the live experience. On stage, you get much longer than you do on TV to do a completely thorough performance piece. “On shows like QI or Have I Got News for You, you’re just part of the process, and next week someone else will be on. You try and keep your head above water on those programmes, but after they are finished, viewers just wonder what’s on next. A panel show is a commodity, and people have forgotten it half an hour later.” However, Rich carries on, “If you have gone out of your way to go to a live show and spent two and a half hours in the theatre, chances are you’ll be talking about it on the way home. “It’s no different from going to live music. Watching a musician live is a completely different experience from listening to his song on the radio. You have more of an artistic and emotional investment in the live performance. That’s what I love about it.”
5
The comedian, who has also made Rich Hall’s (US Election) Breakdown for BBC Radio Four, has no time for those comics who think that TV takes precedence over everything else. According to Rich, “A lot of comedians can’t wait to get off the road, leave behind the crappy dressing rooms and the long drives and get back to the TV studio. But in the TV studio you just aren’t in control in the same way. People like Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock always want to get back to stand-up. They still want to be out there on the road, where you can be a one-man performer, director, writer, producer and editor.
“It sometimes sounds like a crime to go on the road all the time. But for me it’s the proof of the pudding. You hone your show every night. The great thing is, people who come out to see you enjoy the show, and then they come back. They trust you that the show is going to be good when they come to see you again. That’s really gratifying.” So what can audiences expect from “Rich Hall’s Hoedown”? The first half of the show is an examination of the catastrophe President Trump is wreaking on the world on a daily basis. The comedian jokes that, “I love the fact that Trump is President. It’s great for comedy, even though it’s dreadful for the rest of the world and humankind! “But people expect me to talk about it. You can’t avoid talking about Trump because he infiltrates every part of our world like a weevil. He’s like an egg sac which has bored into every aspect of our lives.” Rich says he has to be fleet of foot when tackling the subject of Trump. “My material keeps changing because the guy changes every day on a whim. No Trump joke has any shelf life at all. It’s good for three hours – then it’s out the window. Jokes about the wall, for instance, are so last year. But at least it keeps you on your toes.”
6
The second half of “Rich Hall’s Hoedown” is a riotous tribute to the delights of Americana. With his excellent band, the comedian performs 10 to 12 songs, many of which he improvises, using material he has gleaned from the audience in the first half. Rich laughs that, “The people in the front row realise that they will be targets, but they will also be serenaded. I like to find a couple who have been married for a long time and write a song about how they first met. “You have to keep your mind open to improvise. The best moments come when the audience say to themselves, ‘I didn’t see that coming.’ You paint yourself into such a corner that the audience think, ‘How is he ever going to get out of that?’ And then you escape. It’s a real challenge, but that’s what makes it funny.” The comedian admits “Sometimes I stumble, but that can be funnier than when you nail it. It’s very disposable material. It’s funny in the moment, but you can’t do it tomorrow.” What makes Rich’s music so compelling is that he performs traditional, American country and western songs with a distinctly British tinge. He discloses that, “I can write a song about any car now. It’s much better if it’s a terrible car. It’s funny to romanticise in a Springsteen-esque way a rubbish car that doesn’t deserve it.” One of Rich’s most memorable songs is called “Eritrean Trucking Buddy”. “It’s about the habits of British truck drivers. In America, a song about truck driving would be very romantic and all about women in halter tops hitchhiking. “But in Britain, it’s far less romantic. The drivers have to get out and look underneath their truck for human cargo. This song is about a British driver who finds a refugee from Eritrea under his truck and gives him a lift. It works quite well – unless you’re from Croydon. It doesn’t show Croydon in a good light!” So, as you can see, “Rich Hall’s Hoedown” is a dazzling night out, the most fun you’ll ever have with your cowboy boots on. It is only fair to point out, though, that one thing has disappointed the stand-up about his audiences for the hoedown. “No one is bringing any farm implements of any type. I’m very disappointed. Hoes are welcome.” Rich closes by underlining the importance of word-of-mouth in bringing audiences to his show. “When people really enjoy it, they tell their friends about it. Word-ofmouth is still the greatest. You can advertise on Facebook all you want, but in the end it’s down to the fact that a good live show is a good live show. I’m not about to give this up any time soon.” I’m sure I’m not the only one who is extremely glad to hear that. Tickets for “Rich Hall’s Hoedown” are available at www.offthekerb.com.

EMPLOYERS MUST RECORD WORKING TIME Must an employer keep records of hours worked to fulfil its obligations under the Working Time Directive? Yes, held the CJEU in Federación de Servicios de Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) v Deutsche Bank SAE.
The CCOO is a trade union in Spain. It brought a group action before the National High Court in Spain against Deutsche Bank. The CCOO sought a declaration that the bank was under an obligation to record the actual daily working time of its employees. Hours worked on a particular day were not recorded.
"Keeping time sheets within businesses can be a pain and an administration nightmare but this recent case shows the importance of doing so. Detailed records should be kept and made easily accessible whether this is a written timesheet or an IT system, so that should you need to identify who was working on that date, the information can be obtained easily." comments Matthew from Consensus HR.
BT is to hand 100,000 employees £50m in shares each year in an effort to boost morale. Incoming CEO Philip Jansen described the “yourshare” scheme, whereby employees will receive shares worth £500 every year, as the first step towards a “new inclusive form of capitalism”. Telecom chiefs hope efforts to create a “new, re-energised” BT, which include changing the logo, will rebuild the firm’s reputation in the wake of an Italian accounting scandal, a profit warning, and aggressive cuts to staffing.
"This is a very good reward tool for employees and will help to ensure they feel part of the businesses success or failures. When I visit clients and other businesses, I am always amazed how many do not include their team in the financial aspects of the business. By this I mean how successful or not successful the business is financially. Your team should be kept up to date at all times on how the business is doing and how their input affects the businesses success. We have successfully introduced a number of reward schemes that benefit the employee as well as the company’s turnover." comments Matthew from Consensus HR. YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS What “WILL” happen when your family grows? The whole country has got ‘baby fever’ recently with the arrival of little Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, son to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. However, this situation brings about a change to the Sussex family – a change which is likely to be the same for thousands of other people around the country, but one that (in the midst of all that burping and nappy changing) is probably not ranking too highly in the parents’ list of priorities. The often-overlooked issue is remembering to change any existing WILL, or even to have a WILL drafted if you never had one before. People sometimes forget that a WILL can deal with not only the “who gets what” in respect of financial assets and personal possessions, but also who can act as legal guardian to any children in the event of the death of the parents. If no provision is made in a WILL, there could be a dispute amongst the family as to who should be the main carer and the final decision may end up being made instead by a Judge, potentially after the involvement of the local Social Services department. The “who gets what” itself is actually very important because without a will a partner you have not actually married or entered into a civil partnership with, would have no automatic rights to receive a proportion of your estate, and any step-children will be left without any provision. On the other foot, an ex-partner you had never formally divorced or ended the civil partnership with could still, on the face of it, be entitled to part of your estate. It is therefore always vital to clearly set out your wishes in a WILL. The effect of not reviewing and updating a WILL can be just as problematical as never making one in the first place. After marriage or entering into a civil partnership, any existing will is essentially cancelled and is no longer valid so that precious document you keep in safe storage somewhere may be actually worthless. So, to ensure that your loved ones understand exactly what you want to happen to your assets and children upon your death it is prudent to make a WILL and also update it after any change in personal circumstances. With our costs for a basic will starting at just £170 + VAT there is no excuse not to put your affairs in order! Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes for June
CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) ARIES (March21st-April20th) The New Moon on the 3rd warns against disclosing sensitive information. If someone confides in you, maintain their privacy. It will be tempting to share this information with others, but that will undermine your reputation as a trustworthy person. Dealings with a government agency will be difficult at the beginning of June. You'll be continually turned down for help without being given a reason why. Instead of trying to crack this code, look elsewhere for the assistance you need. A hidden benefactor will come to your rescue when you least expect it. On the 17th, the Full Moon brings unnerving news about a health problem. It will be necessary to undergo a battery of tests to pinpoint the source of a problem. Although this situation will be very trying, it's important to attend each appointment. Slowly but surely, the truth of your situation will emerge. When it does, you'll find the relief you desperately desire.
You'll be indecisive at the beginning of June, due to a confusing New Moon on the 3rd. This is not a good time to sign a contract, submit official papers or enter into a verbal agreement. The other party is being intentionally vague as a means to throw you off balance. Until the terms are clarified, you should withhold your permission. If that means letting an agreement fall through, so be it. You're better off going solo than entering into a deal that puts you at a distinct disadvantage. Legal problems will occur on or around the 17th, when the Full Moon forces you to make restitution to the other party. Don't let yourself be consumed by anger. The sooner you meet this obligation, the faster you can build a happier and healthier future. If an extended trip was stressful, give yourself a few days to recover before going back to business.
TAURUS (April21st-May21st) LEO (July24th-August23rd) On the 3rd, the New Moon will attract a problematic moneymaking opportunity. Although you welcome the chance to improve your income, you won't like your colleagues. You're a highly practical person who would prefers keeping busy to building castles in the air. Many of your fellow workers will resent your diligent attitude. Instead of trying to earn their approval, stay focused on your duties. People around you will soon come to understand that you're worth your weight in gold. At that point, you'll be offered a different type of role. The Full Moon on the 17th will force you to confront an untrustworthy person. Someone who has betrayed you should answer for their behaviour. Shed light on their deception in a public forum. That way, they won't be able to perpetuate their scams on other unwitting victims. Do the world a favour and expose this manipulator for who they really are. Nobody will look down on you for being fooled.
On the 3rd, the New Moon will put you in some unusual company. Although you'll like some of the people you work with, others will rub you the wrong way. Don't draw lines in the social sand just yet. You never know who will be in the position to help you, either personally or professionally. If someone asks you for a loan, issue a polite refusal. You can't waste your hard-earned money on an irresponsible person who will gladly milk you for every cent. With friends like that, you won't need enemies. A creative project won't turn out the way you intended on the 17th. That's because a stressful Full Moon has limited your finances. As a result, you've been forced to work with inferior materials. Don't despair. Instead of treating this work as a failure, consider it a prototype. You'll be able to make improvements as more funds become available.
GEMINI (May22nd-June21st)
VIRGO (August24th-September23rd)
Changing your image won't improve your professional prospects. Assuming a false front will put even more distance between you and the job you want. Although your path to success is much longer than those who have a more conventional appearance, it will be rewarding. The most valuable lessons involve an element of personal sacrifice. The fact you must work harder than anyone else will be empowering. Apply for an exciting job on the 3rd. It may be impossible to land the position at this time, but the New Moon will increase your chances for future success. On the 17th, the Full Moon will force you to confront problems in an intimate relationship. The career constraints of a partner are undermining your bond. Unless one or both of you is willing to change, it may be necessary to go your separate ways. Are you single? Beware of getting involved with someone who is emotionally distant.
A professional offer on the 3rd isn't what it seems. The New Moon is obscuring important details involving this position. You may be forced to work with a difficult colleague that can't be trusted. Before taking this position, do some research into the company in question. You'll quickly learn that morale is very low at this place. You're better off waiting for a better situation. A sensitive person like you should seek employment at places that are famous for treating its staff well. The Full Moon on the 17th brings a stressful domestic matter to a head. You're no longer willing to tolerate a relative or roommate's outrageous behaviour. Instead of continuing to subject yourself to this toxic situation, make a fresh start. You have more control over your destiny than you realise. The secret to your success is adopting a positive attitude. When you believe in yourself, you can move mountains.
10
to your diet and exercise routine. If you want to eliminate certain foods from your meals, do so one item at a time. Carefully observe how your body reacts to these changes. By listening to its signals, you'll be able to craft a regimen that is based on your unique digestive needs. On the 17th, the Full Moon will bring an embarrassing secret to light. Instead of trying to maintain this cover up, come clean. Apologise to those who mistakenly put their faith in you. It will take time to regain their trust. Don't get defensive when you're treated with cold indifference. You can win your way back into the public's good graces by demonstrating you have changed. Live up to your promises.
LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) The New Moon on the 3rd forces you to learn complicated concepts in a short period of time. You're fighting the clock; there is not much room for error. Studying with a quirky teacher will be daunting. You'll start questioning your intelligence when you're working with this genius. There is no time for self-doubt. Focus on acquiring as much knowledge as possible. When you encounter difficulty, ask for additional instruction. This isn't the way you enjoy working, but these are extraordinary circumstances. Adopting another way of doing things will force you grow. On the 17th, the Full Moon will bring some upsetting news about work. You might be downsized from a failing company or be turned down for a desirable job. Remember that when one door closes, a window will open. Instead of seeking employment through conventional measures, try something different. Start your own company or join an employment agency.
AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) The New Moon on the 3rd makes you yearn for some free time, but you'll have difficulty finding it. Financial constraints make it difficult to take a vacation. If you want to make more money, it will be necessary to change your priorities. Instead of spending every last minute at work, start devoting more energy to creative pursuits like writing, painting and playing music. When you satisfy your own desires, you'll radiate positive energy. This will attract the moneymaking opportunities you crave. A group project will come to a close on the 17th, due to a stressful Full Moon. You'll discover that your values are radically different from the other members of the organisation. As a result, it will be impossible to coordinate your efforts. Instead of continuing to beat your head against this brick wall, reset your coordinates and head in a more rewarding direction. You won't get anywhere with your current cohorts.
SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd) On the 3rd, you'll be forced to deal with someone who makes you uncomfortable. You've always operated on instinct, while your partner relies on logic to make their decisions. This difference in approaches makes you distrustful. Until you learn to see the benefit in both systems, you'll continually be at odds. Get into the habit of asking your other half's opinion. When you show respect for them, they'll return the favour. You owe it to yourself to make this partnership work. The Full Moon on the 17th brings disappointment in money. A payment will be far less than you expected. You failed to factor in the costs of this job before setting your price. Don't let this happen again. There are better ways to attract business than offer bargain basement rates. Charge what you are worth and don't apologise for being more expensive than the competition. Your superior work speaks for itself.
PISCES (February20th-March20th) Family matters are stressful in the early days of June. It's important to face painful truths on the 3rd, when the New Moon requires you to make some changes to your household. If a relative needs medical treatment or rehabilitation, be honest. It may be necessary to issue an ultimatum. You can't be expected to give specialised care on top of your regular responsibilities. If you're living in a toxic situation, stop fooling yourself. Establishing your own household will be challenging but satisfying. On the 17th, the Full Moon warns against assuming unrealistic career expectations. Ambition alone won't get you to the top. To reach your goal, it will be necessary to get advanced training. It will be necessary to make prolonged personal sacrifices to advance your education, but your hard work will pay off. Don't be discouraged by the long road ahead; it will be instructive and empowering.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec21st) The New Moon on the 3rd will pave the way to a romantic or business alliance. This relationship will be quite rocky. Your emotional needs are quite different. While you are looking for a partner who is challenging and stimulating, your other half wants someone both reassuring and affectionate. It will be difficult to resolve these differences. Unless you're willing to meet your friend halfway, it may be better to remain solo. Are you already in a relationship? Be sensitive to your partner's needs, even if they seem fanciful to you. On the 17th, the Full Moon will trigger a troubling realisation. You'll change the way you feel about a relative. Someone you admired or hated has been putting on a false front. Once you know the truth, you'll have to alter the way you deal with them. Be willing to admit you were wrong as May turns into June.

GO COCONUTTY I have been a fan of coconut oil for a long time now; long before it had its own publicist I was writing about its virtues and its many uses. Tiana Fair Trade Organics are committed to organic, fair trade and sustainable agricultural methods to ensure a reliable supply chain from coconut farmer to consumer. Their raw organic cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil is the best, and there’s a whole supporting range including a gorgeous hair product with coconut oil and Argan oil. Out now is the unique High Strength one hundred per cent MCT energy food supplement, which has proven beneficial for those with diabetes as well as being excellent for sports nutrition as it’s a fast-acting fuel. My teenage son is a ‘gym bunny’ and a trainer at Energie Fitness in Herts. so I know all about the food supplements on the market designed to give energy, but this is different, it’s a natural solution for adults who need instant energy to reduce tiredness and fatigue. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, a unique form of saturated fatty acids that have numerous benefits for general health and wellbeing. When used as a food supplement, it’s converted into a rapid source of energy in the form of ketones to reduce tightness, fatigue and improve the immune system. It is produced from premium organic raw extra virgin coconut oil, not from refined coconut or palm oils and so it contains potent levels of Lauric Acid (one of the main components of breast milk) which is an excellent support for optimal health. The vegan products are free from gluten, wheat, nut, dairy content, cholesterol, GMO, trans-fats and hydrogenated fat. It’s easy to consume this because it is 100 per cent pure, it is unflavoured and so you can take a couple of teaspoons with food, or, even easier mix into tea or coffee, use it to make scrambled egg or an omelette. Mix with milk or plant-based milk and drink or use over cereal or granola, add into smoothies or mix into cottage cheese or yogurt. You can of course mix it into soups or stews and use to sauté vegetables.
It costs from £11.99 at Holland and Barrett health stores across Herts. and from www.tiana-coconut.com

La Bouse This is absolutely divine! It’s a soft cheese called La Bouse split and filled with wild garlic. All available while stocks last! These are some fabulous Cheese and Wine Pairings put together by the Team at The Cheese Plate, We are all about creating some cracking cheese and wine pairings, when put together, these pairings to create something really special. Here are our top six! 1. Hereford Hop and Moko Black Hereford Hop is an English cheddar style cheese rolled in toasted hops. It has a creamy texture and a punchy taste. This works perfectly with a Moko Black Sauvignon Blanc, deliciously sweet, crisp white wine from New Zealand. The balance of the sweet and savoury is why this pairing works so well.
16
2. Old Winchester and Pharros Old Winchester is a classic British cheddar style cheese. A crumbly and crunchy texture with a developing, nutty aftertaste. These elements pair excellently with a Spanish Pharros, which is a white Rioja. This pairing is special for a couple of reasons. One because of the wine - not a lot of people know you can get a white Rioja and just how amazing it is. And two, the combination of the cheese and wine will create a fizzy sensation. This is due to the calcium lactate in the cheese and how it reacts to the wine. Isn't that amazing! 3. Admiral Collingwood and Picpoul De Pinet Admiral Collingwood is a unique cheese that is washed in Newcastle Brown Ale resulting in a palatable salty aftertaste. The perfect wine to pair with this cheese is French Picpoul. The Picpoul grape has adapted to grow in salt mash vines so also has a slight salty element to its taste. Together they just work so well. 4. Al Romero and The Man with The Axe Al Romero is a Manchego in all but name. A hard, Spanish style with a typical Mediterranean taste that is rolled in Rosemary. A perfect wine pairing is The Man with The Axe, a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon. When paired together, they create an almost lamby, meaty taste. This is due to Rosemary rind of the cheese together with the meatiness of the red wine. 5. Raypanear VSOP and Deer Point Raypanear is a Dutch cheese that has an interesting, complex flavour. It starts sweet and ends beefy. Paired together with a Bulgarian Deer Point Merlot (an amazing red wine) it creates a sticky toffee taste. Three for the price of one, how amazing is that! 6. Beauvale Blue and Somerset Ice Cider Beauvale Blue is the creamiest, yummiest blue cheese. A great starter for those that aren’t massive fans of blue cheeses. Pair this with a Somerset Ice Cider, the creaminess of the cheese makes the Ice Cider a hundred times more appley. A really unusual but outstanding finishing pair and it’s a great take on a sweet wine with a cheese. A much better way to finish any meal. These six pairings have lots to offer, whatever your preference on cheese and wine. Pop in and pick up your favourite to spoil yourself.

LIKE CLIMATE CHANGE IS FOOD WASTE AND HEALTH AN EMERGENCY?
Latest news about Heart disease deaths in under 75’s going up for the first time in 50 years and the government appointing a ‘Food Waste’ Chief means we have an emergency situation in the food industry. Especially when we have known about the problem for years yet watched it get worse. ‘Emergencies’ require radical action. Our previous blogs: Change the economics of the food industry and The Next Big idea provide some radical solutions with getting food on the curriculum at the centre. Fresh healthy ingredients This is because to make change we need to have an enlightened, unselfish, society. The recent climate emergency rallies were galvanised by the younger generations so it seems obvious that they should learn about food growing, cooking and nutrition and influence their families. Especially when the supermarkets and big business are spending £millions telling consumers that they should buy cheaper sugary fatty, foods, take-aways and salty ready meals. We need the carrot and stick approach to make change. Sugar tax should be followed with a ‘Fat’ tax to provide the ‘stick’ stimulus, better, healthier, cheaper food from cooking real ingredients should be the ‘Carrot’ incentive. (Sorry about the pun) When 20% of NHS spend is on food related disease, over half our schools already have a vegetable patch and many organisations have already written the teaching notes for the curriculum, educating the next generation about food seems a no brainer. CHAMPAGNE, IT’S A BRITISH INVENTION ...... HUSH DON’T TELL THE FRENCH! “Pleasure without Champagne is purely artificial.” – Oscar Wilde "Champagne! In victory one deserves it, in defeat one needs it.” – Napoleon Bonaparte Champagne, synonymous with luxury, royalty and celebration, is the world's premier region and appellation for sparkling wine. Despite the colloquial use of the term to mean any sparkling wine, 'Champagne' is a protected term referring only to a wine which is made in the Champagne region, using the méthode champenoise, and with grapes grown in the region, the three most important of which are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Champagne has been a wine producing region since the Middle Ages, yet the bubbles for which Champagne is so famous today only appeared in the wines over the last few centuries. Prior to this time, Champagne was a still wine. Dom Perignon, the Benedictine monk from the Abbey of Hautvillers, famously quoted as saying "come quickly, I am tasting the stars", is often credited with the 'discovery' of champagne's bubbles. Unfortunately, the story is a myth. Not that the French would be willing to readily admit it, but Champagne actually has the British, one of their biggest markets, to thank for the bubbles. A few 'happy' accidents, including extra heat from the wine's sea journey from France to England, and the British adding sugar into the wines from the stores of their Caribbean colonies, led to the secondary fermentation in bottle, and the wine's first bubbles in the 17th century. Champagne then fully embraced the sparkling rendition of its wine in the 19th century. Moving forward a few hundred years, England has become a producer of premium wines. In a nutshell: a challenger to the primacy of champagne. Because of England's cool climate, only early-ripening vine varieties stand a chance of reliably producing a crop. After the Champagne grapes Chardonnay, Pinots Noir and Meunier, the most planted varieties are therefore the hybrid Seyval Blanc, the German crossing Reichensteiner, Müller-Thurgau and the increasingly successful aromatic Bacchus. In the last 10 years or so, bottle-fermented sparkling wines have become Britain’s strongest suit, especially those made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – so much so that Champagne companies have been reportedly eyeing up vineyards in the south of England. We have the Three Squirrels winery based near Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire which has used the champagne method, but using German grapes with notes of butter and brioche aromas with the crunch of fresh apples. Palate is balanced with fruit and toast.
