Exclusive Interview with Howard Jones It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. He set out his manifesto in his very first single “New Song”. The lyrics called on the listener to challenge their preconceived ideas, to see both sides and ‘throw off your mental chains’. New Song was recently used in a pivotal scene in ‘Breaking Bad’ where Aaron Paul’s character Jessie Pinkman questions if he wants to ‘play by the rules’. New Song peaked at number 3 in the UK singles charts. Along with ‘New Song’, The first two albums, ‘Humans Lib’ and ‘Dream into Action’, brought Howard a host of hits including ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, ‘What is Love?’, ‘Pearl In The Shell’, ‘Like to Get To know You Well’, ‘Hide And Seek’ (performed at Live Aid), ‘Look Mama’ and ‘No One Is To Blame’, which reached No.1 in the US. Howard has sold over 8 million albums across the globe and is one of a select group of British artists who have comprehensively ‘broken America’. Howard Jones solo shows are an intimate trip through Howard's 30 year music career. Many of his best known songs were composed on his favourite instrument; the piano. Howard shares behind the scenes stories and reveals the inspiration behind the songs in these rare acoustic shows. The Sticks spoke to Howard ahead of his solo tour This tour is slightly different than normal, in what way? I am trying to make it a yearly thing; I did a similar tour last year and played some different venues. Mainly my touring is done with my band and big production, but I like to do the smaller venues and just sit at the piano and play the songs, do a bit of chat, creating a more intimate atmosphere. I really enjoy that is like an antidote to the big extrovert shows. Is there a Q and A during the show? What I have done is I have told fans to tell me which show they are coming to, tell me what song you would like me to play and why
4
you really like that particular song. I have a bunch of emails with me on stage that I can pull out and say this is from so and so and hopefully they will be in the audience, then there might be a bit of interaction going back and forth. I am not sure I could cope otherwise because at some shows like at the Union Chapel where there will be 700 people in. Is their a new album out soon? Yes there is, I am hoping to get it out by the end of 2017 although that might be being a bit optimistic, so maybe beginning of 2018. I have 3 tracks done already. How did you start off in the music business? I come from a musical family; my brothers are musicians and play instruments, one is a drummer, one is a bass player and the other plays everything and they all sing. My parents used to sing because they are Welsh and it is compulsory. When we went visiting our relatives you either had to play the piano or sing something and we grew up in that atmosphere, also my mum was always listening to the radio. I got brought a little transistor radio when I was 9 years old and used to listen to it day and night. Music was just everywhere in our family. Who were you listening to on your radio? It was all that 60’s stuff, The Beatles, The Stones, Manfred Mann, The Tremeloes, Freddie and The Dreamers because that is what my mum was into. Why do you think 80’s music is still so popular? I think it was a great time for pop music, there was something for everyone, there was the indie bands, glam metal bands, the electronic scene, the blue eyed soul, ska and reggae, it was all running in parallel, everyone still had there own tribe they could belong to but it was still part of the whole thing. I am not sure what category I was in but I was in there somewhere. How did you go from listening to music to performing it? I started playing in bands when I was still at school and we use to play at school events, and I got the bug and once you have the bug for doing that it is difficult to get rid of it. I just love performing, singing, playing the songs and making a racket, it has always been in my blood, I can’t help myself. It is odd because I am a bit of an extrovert but I also like to sit in the corner - sometimes there is a bit of a conflict going on. Everybody remembers one of your big hits “New Song” not just for the song but the mime artist Jed Holly featured, how did you meet him? I was doing loads of gigs round High Wycombe, which was where I lived, and we were playing any place that would have us basically. Jed was a fan and a friend, he used to dance in the audience and respond to the music. So I thought I really should get this guy up on stage, because he was so good. We decided to do that and create these characters that went along with the music. It was almost like an alternative performance art type thing we were doing. It just seemed to work and then when we did “Top of the Pops” people thought what the hell is going on here and who’s the guy in the chains? We had been doing that live for 3 years or more.
5
What has been the highlight of your career so far? Must be 1985 and Live Aid, it was amazing. I don’t think anyone who was part of it will ever forget it. You had 100,000 people in Wembley and then a billion people watching it on tv, it very much felt like you were part of history being made as it was the first time the world came together to save peoples lives. I was so glad I was part of it; I did one song that was “Hide and Seek”. I met Paul and Linda Mc Cartney, David Bowie, Pete Townsend, I hung out with Queen, there are so many memories that go with it and I am a big friend with Midge (Ure), he now lives close to me so I see him quite a lot. Do you think being a Buddhist has helped you in your musical career? Yes definitely, I have been practising for 24 years now; the philosophy is about respecting life, respecting every single person and respecting yourself and realising it is up to you and you can’t go blaming others. The Buddhist practice helps you to be very positive about your outlook on life and when the difficult times come to see there is a silver lining to everything. If it is difficult you can learn from it, it is an up beat positive view of life. It really suits me and has helped me so much with the music, if you put yourself out there and on stage you are going to get some people not liking that and having a go and you have got to be strong within yourself to know that it is not personal. What they think is what they think and you have still got to do what you have to do. It is easy to say but harder to do. If you were in charge of the country for the day what would be the first ting you would do? I would immediately pump a load of money into the NHS because it is struggling under the strain. People are getting very ill and are not getting in to hospital quick enough. We have got to look after people when they are sick.

10 Extreme Excuses for Underpaying Employees Investigators from HMRC have revealed some of the worst excuses given to them by employers caught out for underpaying staff. This coincides with a new government awareness campaign designed to help employees know how much they are legally entitled to. All workers should be paid at least the National Minimum Wage (according to their age up to 25 years), or National Living Wage (£7.20 per hour if aged 25 years or older). Increased minimum levels will be introduced on 1 April 2017. Top Ten Bizarre Excuses for Underpaying Employees HMRC investigators have published the most bizarre excuses given to them by employers found to be underpaying their staff: 1. The employee wasn’t a good worker so I didn’t think they deserved to be paid the National Minimum Wage. 2. It’s part of UK culture not to pay young workers for the first three months as they have to prove their ‘worth’ first. 3. I thought it was ok to pay foreign workers below the National Minimum Wage as they aren’t British and therefore don’t have the right to be paid it. 4. She doesn’t deserve the National Minimum Wage because she only makes the teas and sweeps the floors. 5. I’ve got an agreement with my workers that I won’t pay them the National Minimum Wage; they understand and they even signed a contract to this effect. 6. My accountant and I speak a different language – he doesn’t understand me and that’s why he doesn’t pay my workers the correct wages. 7. My workers like to think of themselves as being self-employed and the National Minimum Wage doesn’t apply to people who work for themselves. 8. My workers are often just on standby when there are no customers in the shop; I only pay them for when they’re actually serving someone.
7
9. My employee is still learning so they aren’t entitled to the National Minimum Wage. 10. The National Minimum Wage doesn’t apply to my business. In a government press release, Business Minister Margot James says: “There are no excuses for underpaying staff what they are legally entitled to. This campaign will raise awareness among the lowest paid in society about what they must legally receive and I would encourage anyone who thinks they may be paid less to contact Acas as soon as possible.” Matthew from Consensus HR comments: “Well we have seen it all now! It is unbelievable that these practices are still happening, despite employers continually being told the correct amount.” He adds: “The Government is starting to come down hard on this. All employers must check the current rate and ensure their teams are paid the right amount. The financial penalty for failure is increasing and excuses will not be accepted.” To keep up to date with the current pay rate for your team contact Consensus HR. YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS “Love Thy Neighbour?” So, how well do you get on with your neighbours? According to our Dispute Resolution team, not always very well, as they are getting an increasing number of requests for help in property disputes between sellers and buyers, and also neighbours - over a whole range of problems. When we buy a property, we rely on the Sellers’ Property Information form to tell us whether there have ever been any neighbour or boundary disputes – the answer is usually “No” because you know that “Yes” would be the kiss of death to the sale! The boundaries are also identified – left or right of the property. One good tip when buying a house is to go back at various times and check out the neighbouring area – including evenings, after dark, and at weekends. You should be able to tell, for example, what the noise level is like, particularly from any neighbouring properties. Problems can still arise, though – either after you move in, or if new neighbours move in next to you. If they start with the all-night parties and loud music which carries on each week, or they decide to build a large extension (sometimes on the party wall) and have to move or replace the boundary fence, or they let the Leylandii shoot up like triffids – what can you do ? These examples may sound extreme, but anti-social behaviour can cause no end of stress and at its worst, can ruin lives – because, when it’s your home, there is no escape. If you do have neighbour issues, firstly, check your household insurance policies for the words “Legal Expense Insurance”. These policies often cover neighbour or boundary disputes, so your first port of call would be to their helpline as it is FREE. If they think you need legal advice from a specialist firm of solicitors, they may refer it to someone like Curwens and the cost of this is usually covered by your policy. Don’t panic if you don’t have any insurance cover, you can still often get some initial FREE advice from your local Citizens Advice Bureau or Local Government. For further specialist advice, call 0208 363 444 and ask for Adrian Boulter, our property dispute expert. Curwens have offices in Royston, Hoddesdon and Enfield.

Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes March
ARIES March 21st - April 20th
CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd
Try not to make unfair demands on your nearest and dearest in early March. Temperamental behaviour could drive a wedge between you and your best friend, romantic partner or business partner. You'll spend a little more money than usual during the first half of the month, possibly to replace some broken technical equipment. On the 12th, the Full Moon will help you wrap up a work assignment, paving the way for a possible promotion. Get ready to step into the spotlight. If you've been contemplating a makeover, schedule one for the 28th, when the New Moon will help you find a style that enhances your best assets. You'll have difficulty balancing your personal and professional lives at the end of the month. No matter how much you ask for understanding, your partner will be irritated by all the time you spend at work. They won't be gracious about the sacrifices you're making to climb the ladder to success.
An erratic boss or manager will put too many demands on you in the early days of March. Don't be too quick to agree to overtime. Your family need you close to home. By standing up for your rights, you'll earn the respect of your superiors. You might even be given a surprise promotion. You'll make great career strides after yielding impressive results with a tight budget. The Full Moon on the 12th could find you graduating from a class or making some other kind of step forward professionally. Someone who is impressed by your work will offer to form a partnership with you. If you're put in charge of a group, don't bother copying the competition. The secret to your success will be offering unique products and services. On the 28th, you'll be given an exciting career opportunity. Your personal life will suffer in the early stages of your new job. Your loved ones will have to become more self-reliant.
TAURUS April 21st - May 21st
LEO July 24th - August 23rd
Overindulging in food and drink will be give you cause for regret at the start of March. Practice moderation or you could experience physical challenges. If you're preoccupied with a past disappointment, find healthy ways to lift your spirits. Working on creative projects will be the best thing for you. Take a trip to the craft store and stock up on supplies. The Full Moon on the 12th marks an exciting turning point in your love life making this a good time to get engaged or married. If you're in a serious relationship, your amour might give you a lavish token of their appreciation. An unexpected expense will arise during the second half of March; resist the temptation to borrow money from a friend. On the 28th, the New Moon could land you a lucrative opportunity that allows you to repay a debt. Don't discuss this assignment at your regular job; it's best to keep it under wraps.
It's difficult finding an opportunity to use your expertise. Instead of holding out for the perfect job, it will probably be best to accept some part time or temporary work in early March. With a little patience and persistence, you'll find the sort of position you are looking for. It's simply a matter of making the right connections. Money from an inheritance, insurance refund or legal settlement will help tide you over during the first half of the month. A big pay cheque could arrive near the 12th, when the Full Moon ensures you are handsomely paid for a job well done. Don't let a loved one pressure you into buying something you can't afford in the middle of the month. It's important to conserve your cash at this time. On the 28th, the New Moon will attract an opportunity to travel, study or both. This is a great time to apply to an academic program that is possibly located overseas.
GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd At the start of the month, friends will try to pressure you to do something irresponsible with your hard earned cash. Keep your money safe in the bank, where it will be protected from chancers and opportunists. If you're single, a friendship could turn romantic when someone you've known for years will make a move on you. Relocating to a different neighbourhood is a possibility on the 12th, due to a supportive Full Moon. Although you'll enjoy living in a more cosmopolitan area, it will take time for a good friend or romantic partner to get used to this shift. Toward the middle of the month, your social life will be abuzz with excitement. Go to as many parties and casual get togethers as possible. You'll enjoy mixing and mingling with a wide variety of people. The New Moon on the 28th will mark the beginning of a group association that is very stimulating. Join a book club or volunteer organisation.
Throwing money at a problem will not be an instant fix. You will need to have a difficult conversation with someone close to you in early March. Finding new ways to save money is critical to the health of your relationship. If you're single, stop trying to buy people's affection. You deserve to be with someone who loves you for your personality, not your bank account. Be compassionate and encouraging to those you love. By tempering your criticisms with kindness, your bond will grow stronger than ever. The Full Moon on the 12th will find you reaping the benefits of a self-improvement program. Splash out on a new outfit, tablet computer or smart phone; you've earned a reward. A brilliant idea for an invention could occur to you in the middle of the month. On the 28th, the New Moon will mark a fresh beginning in a relationship. Let down your defences with someone who has proven their loyalty.
10
member will be helpful during the first half of the month. Your tenacity will help you cut through the red tape of a big bureaucracy and officialdom. Near the 12th, the Full Moon could mark a legal decision being given in your favour. This will strengthen your position and give you a greater measure of control over your personal life decisions. Go out and celebrate this victory with your nearest and dearest. Domestic life will be especially rewarding toward the middle of the month. The New Moon on the 28th would be a perfect time to make some home improvements or buy a piece of property. There will be money available for some beautiful fixtures or furnishings.
LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd You've been enjoying being in the spotlight, but this has made a close friend rather jealous. An angry outburst could occur at the beginning of March, making you worried about the future of this relationship. Try imagining what this situation must be like for your loved one. A little care and compassion will go a long way. On the 12th, the Full Moon will bring important information to light. At long last, you'll be able to address an important family matter or wrap up a property deal. A demanding relative's behaviour will create problems in your personal life. Be ready to defend your best friend or romantic partner to your kin. The New Moon on the 28th is excellent for signing an agreement, embarking on a relationship or hiring a professional. Don't lend money to a loved one at the end of the month or you will regret it. You don't want to feed someone's bad habit.
AQUARIUS Jan 21st – Feb 19th Angry words will be exchanged on social media. Think twice before posting a sarcastic remark on Facebook or Twitter. You don't want a bad joke or a thoughtless comment to undermine your reputation. A home repair project will be completed faster than you expect during the first half of March. By the 12th, the Full Moon could send a nice windfall. If you have a business or romantic partner, they'll get a pay rise that greatly improves your standard of living. Alternatively, you could receive an inheritance, tax refund or royalty payment. Use this money to take a relaxing vacation. You're long overdue for a break. The New Moon on the 28th may prompt a passionate declaration of love. It's a great time to propose, get engaged or exchange marriage vows. Do you already have a partner? Taking a minibreak will be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect. Escaping the pressures of home will allow you to fully focus on each other.
SCORPIO October 24th - Nov 22nd Work will be erratic at the start of the month. Costly outings with friends won't be an option. Do everything in your power to conserve your resources during the first half of March. Trust the advice of your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. With their encouragement, you can get out of this financial slump. A group project will come to a successful conclusion on the 12th, thanks to a supportive Full Moon. Employment prospects will dramatically improve after this; you could land a job with terrific benefits. The New Moon on the 28th could mark the first day of an exciting new role. Your ability to think on your feet will serve you well in this position. It will be a relief to escape the boring routines that have dogged you at previous companies. Working with unusual situations and offbeat people will bring out the best in you.
PISCES February 20th - March 20th At the beginning of March, unexpected expenses could come thick and fast. Money will be tight and there won't be many opportunities to enjoy creature comforts. Professional demands will be significant. If you play your cards right, you could negotiate a pay rise. The Full Moon on the 12th will signal a turning point in a relationship. You may decide to move in with a lover or even a good friend. Getting engaged or married is another possibility. If you already have a serious partner, you can realise a goal you've both had since the early days of your courtship. Work assignments will be more plentiful during the second half of the month; you'll be able to build up your savings account again. The New Moon on the 28th will give you a chance to earn a steady salary from artistic efforts. You'll enjoy getting paid to create beautiful things for others.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd - Dec 21st Friends probably won't approve of a romantic relationship at the beginning of March. Being torn between these two spheres will be difficult. Be good to yourself during this stressful time. Brisk exercise will help you relieve tension, even if it's taking a fast walk in your lunch hour. The Full Moon on the 12th will mark an exciting staging post in your career. Don't be surprised if you're given a rise, promotion or both. Landing a new job is another possibility during the middle of the month. Your love life will heat up near the 28th, thanks to an energising New Moon. You'll have to make the first move on the object of your affection. If you're already in a relationship buy your amour a token of your appreciation. Choose something geared toward their tastes, not yours. If you don't have any good ideas, ask their best friend for advice.

The charity is based in Buckinghamshire and works in partnership with researchers, NHS Trusts and universities to train specialist dogs to detect the odour of human disease. It has two main arms: cancer detection dogs and medical alert assistance dogs. Cancer Detection Dogs are trained to detect the odour of volatiles associated with cancer cells present in urine or breath samples. The cancer dogs have the capacity to provide second line screening for cancers that are currently difficult to diagnose reliably, such as prostate cancer. Two papers produced by the charity in 2004 (BMJ) and 2011 (Cancer Bio mark) have shown dogs to reliably detect bladder cancer. Current research projects include the detection of breast and prostate cancer. Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are trained to assist individuals managing complex life threatening conditions, such as diabetes, POT’s narcolepsy, Addison’s and severe allergies. The dogs are taught to identify and alert to the odour changes that are associated with certain medical events, for diabetics, a drop in blood sugar level. There are currently over 60 accredited Medical Alert Assistance Dogs partnered across the UK and with more funding this number will increase. The charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on charitable donations. http://medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk/ ..............................................................................................

Book Review
He's not the perfect husband. But he is the perfect suspect. Dan Cooper has never been the perfect husband to Lisa. He travels for work and plays the carefree bachelor when he can. But now, on a solo business trip, in a remote coastal hotel, he’s surprised to find Lisa in his bathroom. She’s dead. He has no idea how she got there but one chilling fact is clear: everything points to Dan having murdered her. Someone is trying to frame him. Someone who might still be watching. In a panic, he goes on the run. But even as he flees across Europe, his unknown enemy stacks up the evidence against him. Dan is determined to clear his name and take revenge on Lisa’s killer, but the culprit is closing in. And then there’s the agony of his own guilty conscience. No, he didn’t kill her — but is it all his fault? I can safely say this is one of the best books I have read in the last few years, even better than Adam’s “Her Last Tomorrow”. This fast paced intense psychological thriller has you guessing and then second guessing yourself as Dan tries to work out what is going on around him and in his life. This story has more twists and turns than a helter-skelter and has Dan rushing across France, Switzerland and finally in to Bratislava getting away from his adversary, I had no idea who the villain of the piece was until the reveal. A book in the same vane as the great crime thriller writer Peter James, this is a 5 star read.

Following his 2015 worldwide bestseller Her Last Tomorrow, his psychological thrillers were bought by Thomas & Mercer, an imprint of Amazon Publishing. Prior to the Amazon deal, Her Last Tomorrow sold more than 150,000 copies across all platforms and became one of the bestselling books of the year, reaching the top 10 in the overall Amazon Kindle chart and peaking at number 12 in the combined paperback fiction and non-fiction chart. In February 2017, Only The Truth, became a worldwide bestseller, reaching storewide number 1 at both Amazon US and Amazon UK, making it the bestselling book in the world at that moment in time. The same day, Amazon’s overall Author Rankings placed Adam as the mostly widely read author in the world, with J.K. Rowling in second place.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli Just as we’re all starting to tire of winter roots comes a breath of fresh air, a slightly bitter and tangy veg. that is a superfood and destined to brighten up any dinner plate: purple sprouting broccoli. Cooked or delicious raw!
The first of the year’s brassicas to grace our plates, purple sprouting is usually bought up by top chefs champing at the bit to turn their backs on parsnips, swede and turnips and bring a more spring-like flavour to their dishes. And, who can blame them? Not only does it look very pretty, but it also tastes mighty fine!
But it’s not just purple sprouting we have to look forward to, now brassica season is underway, it won’t be too long a wait before we can enjoy Tenderstem, Belleverde and good-old fashioned broccoli in all its shortstemmed glory.
And, it’s not just flavour it’ll bring to your mealtimes, but a whole host of health benefits too! Broccoli’s noteworthy nutrients include vitamin C, vitamin A (mostly as beta-carotene), folic acid, calcium, and fibre, which has hailed it as one of nature’s miracle vegetables!
