Exclusive Interview with Robert Daws
For Bedfordshire Actor, writer and vocal artist Robert Daws maybe it would be easier to list the TV and stage shows that he has not appeared in than the one he has. He appeared in the 1982 stage play On Your Way, Riley! with Brian Murphy and Maureen Lipman. He played Tuppy Glossop in the early 1990s version of Jeeves and Wooster. He played pompous cricket captain Roger Dervish alongside Brenda Blethyn in the ITV comedy drama Outside Edge 1994–96 and has also appeared in a number of one-off dramas including the 1997 BBC drama, The Missing Postman. In 1996 he starred in a pilot of what would become Roger Roger, a comedy drama which ran until 2003. Daws starred as Sam, the co-owner of Cresta Cabs. Robert plays the trumpet, as evidenced when in 1994 he appeared as a guest in the final episode of the BBC comedy series A Bit of Fry and Laurie and played over the credits, accompanied by Hugh Laurie on the piano. To many he is best remebered Dr. Gordon Ormerod in the long-running ITV1 drama series The Royal, which ended its run in July 2011, the last scenes of which showed Ormerod fighting for his life after an attack at the hospital. The series has not been recommissioned by ITV leaving Dr Ormerod's fate never to be known. Robert Daws played a recurring role in Robin of Sherwood as King John's herald, Hubert de Guiscarde in the episodes "The Greatest Enemy" and "The Sheriff of Nottingham". In November & December 2009 he appeared in Public Property by Sam Peter Jackson at the Trafalgar Studios. In May and June 2010 he appeared in Coronation Street as Gail McIntyre's barrister as part of her murder trial storyline where she was wrongly accused of murdering husband Joe McIntyre. From July 2010 to 11 September 2010 Robert Daws appeared as Dr Watson in The Secret of Sherlock Holmes at the Duchess Theatre. In this production Sherlock Holmes was played by Peter Egan. In 2011 he appeared as Charles Pooter in a new adaptation of 'Diary of a Nobody'. He also appeared in 'Rock and Chips' for the BBC and played garage owner, John Carlisle, in an episode of New Tricks which was shown on BBC1 in 2011. He played Gavin Dibbs the husband of the new GP in Port Wenn in an episode of Doc Martin on ITV1 in September of the same year.

He finished working with best-selling mystery writer Adam Croft on a radio-play adaptation of Croft's 2011 book, Exit Stage Left in 2012. When did you first get in to acting? Got the acting bug at school they had a very good drama group and I joined a youth theatre group at 15 and RADA aged 17 What was first professional role? As soon as I got my Equity card I landed the exciting role of the back end of a camel in Aladdin at Westcliffe on Sea. What has been your favourite role? Without a doubt it was Sam in John Sullivan’s brilliant show “Roger Roger” what a great writer John was and what a fabulous character Sam was. And your least favourite role? I still have nightmares about this it was a training film for Southern Gas showing how to mend boilers. Part you would like to play? Would love to play Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” Do you prefer doing a series or one off dramas? Enjoy doing series as you get the feeling of working as a family You have just written a number bestselling kindle book called “The Rock”, what got you into writing? I have always dabbled with writing and started “The Rock “as a TV script but had no interest so I changed the location to Gibraltar somewhere I know well (have been visiting on and off for 25 years) and changed some of the characters, the central character in the book is Detective Sergeant Tamara Sullivan name as my tribute to the wonderful writer John Sullivan, and I hope to have my second book released just in time for Christmas.
-5-
What are your future plans? At the moment I am in London in “Yes Prime Minster” playing Jim Hacker till January then I am off to Gibraltar to launch the book there and then a possible new TV comedy show I understand you record audio books in your studio? Yes, last year I did a radio version of Bedfordshire best selling mystery writer Adam Croft’s book “Exit Stage Left” with an all star cast which was great and I have just completed two more books “Diary of a Nobody“ and “Diary of a Mummy Misfit” When you’re away from work do you enjoy watching TV or DVD’s? Yes I am currently watching Breaking Bad series 2 Do you get time to read books as well as write them? I am reading the Jerome K. Jerome book “Diary of a Pilgrimage” which is very enjoyable. What is your favourite food? Anything cooked by my wife Amy, she is an amazing cook but if I do get chance in the kitchen I like to cook Lamb Tangine. Do you get time listen to music or the radio at all? I listen to BBC 3 Counties on the radio and have a passion for big band music so play that at home. Who have you seen on stage that impressed you recently? I saw Yorkshire comedian Richard Herring the other week and he was so funny And finally what is your idea of a perfect weekend? Being at home with a nice roast dinner could not be better

Worn by celebrities such as Fearne Cotton, Sienna Miller and Tess Daly, seen on the catwalks of London, Vienna, Paris and Berlin Fashion Weeks and featuring in Vogue; Hitchin based Helen Rochfort’s Handbags and Accessories have been a phenomenal success. Imagine a blend of silver metallics with bright, vivid colours and a splash of classic pop art and that is the quirky designs of Helen Rochfort bags. As someone who is particularly partial to buying handbags, I was excited by the opportunity to write this article, and browsing Helen’s products online opened up a whole world of colourful cuteness like nothing I had ever seen. So how can someone that claims to not design around popular fashion but follow her own style have done so well? It is almost certain that the arty individuality of Helen’s statement designs is what has made her so successful. The most surprising thing about their individuality is that they are still extremely versatile- as anybody; cutting edge fashionistas or vintage lovers; young and old can wear and adore these bags. The brand’s success does not stop there. As well as Vogue, the accessories have also been promoted in Grazia, Look, Fabulous, Style, Jolie, Reveal, Mizz, Telegraph, Tique Es, More and Metro. With further celebrities including, Holly Willoughby, Lauren Laverne, Kate Winslet, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Myleene Klass, Denise Van Outen, Alesha Dixon, Mary Portas, Anastacia, Michelle Keegan, Alexandra Burke, US Fashion Designer (and daughter of Jack Nicholson) Jennifer Nicholson, Designer Alice Temperley, The Duke Spirits Liela Moss and Victoria’s Secret Model Libby Hobday all buying and wearing Helen’s products, with many of them appearing on the red carpet. In November 2011 Helen Rochfort appeared on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ showcasing her collection as ‘future collectables’. She also had the privilege of meeting Prince Charles as part of the Prince’s Trust, and designing the royal wedding album for Prince Edward and Sophie. Helen has managed to keep her international brand local with all of the products being manufactured in the UK, and Hitchin remaining the centre of her business- where she employs five members of staff. However, she didn’t move to Hitchin until 2007. Prior to this she got a fashion degree in Cheltenham before owning and running a London stationary business called ‘Scrumptious Designs’. She didn’t start designing handbags until 2003. Her products have since extended to now include other accessories including watches, phone cases and eco shopping bags. Helen also now lectures on art and has -8-
recently been offered the chance to travel to Normandy to lecture at a country house once a month. Helen met author Carole Matthews via MySpace and became great friends, prompting Carole to write the novel ‘Summer Daydreams’ about Helen’s life. Apparently 75% of the book is fact and the rest fiction with the most far-fetched parts being fact – which (as Helen says) shows that ‘fact, can indeed be stranger than fiction!’ The partnership led Helen to design a unique ‘Summer Daydreams’ handbag which she released alongside Carole’s novel.
This month brings the exciting new launch of Helen’s ‘prestige range’- a highly anticipated collection. Helen’s products are stocked in Very, ASOS and New Look as well as most other common retailers and her website is www.helenrochfort.com

Christmas Theatre In the second part of our feature on Pantomimes and Christmas shows, we preview three more local productions and what they are offering this festive season.
Firstly at the Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage we have Robin Hood starring Brian Capron (Richard Hillman of Coronation Street fame), who will be bringing his considerable acting skills into play as the villainous and determined Sheriff of Nottingham. Brian is joined by Stevenage’s legendary dame Paul Laidlaw as Dame Doubletop in his 26th panto at the CG theatre this year. In the title role is actress and singer Tracey Penn fresh form the UK tour of “Legally Blonde” in which she played the role of Vivienne Kensington and before that “Love Never Dies”. Tracey says that she will make Robin both “traditional and also believable” The last main character is Will Scarlet played by David Dobson who will be bringing his quite and hilarious comedy acting talents to the role. “The Adventures of Robin Hood” will take you on a journey in to the enchanted world of Sherwood Forest with Robin, Will Scarlet, Little John and Much the miller’s son as they clean up at the annual archery contest, wind-up the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham and rescue the beautiful Maid Marion from his evil clutches, all without laddering their tights. The show is produced by Jordan Productions who have been creating high quality pantomimes since 1993 and promise all the ingredients of a classic panto including thrilling adventure, stunning costumes, sensational songs and of course the normal comedy mayhem to make it the hottest ticket in town The Adventures of Robin Hood runs from Saturday 1st December to Sunday 27th January 2013 to book your tickets call the box office on 01438 363200 or visit www.gordoncraig.co.uk
Next is the Grove Theatre, Dunstable’s pantomime “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, starring Sue Holderness as the wicked queen. She is most famously known for her larger than life character Marlene Boyce in “Only Fools and Horses” and “Green, Green Grass”. Complete with a full company of seven dwarfs, this year’s panto at the Grove is set to be one of the best yet at the Dunstable venue, with stunning sets that will fill 2 giant trucks and take 4 days to assemble. - 12 -
Jo Ditch, General Manager of Grove Theatre said “We are delighted to welcome Sue Holderness to Dunstable over the festive season for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and I am sure that this year’s Pantomime, is set to be one of our strongest since we opened the doors to the Theatre in 2007” Sue Holderness began her career with Manchester’s 69 Theatre Company in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peer Gynt and as Desdemona in Catch My Soul (Jack Good’s rock-musical of Othello). Her West End plays include The Female Odd Couple, Why Not Stay for Breakfast and The Male of the Species. Her films credits include That’ll Be the Day, It Could Happen to You, and Lime Street with Robert Wagner. No stranger to television, Sue has played roles including Marianne in The Sandbagger, Liz in It Takes a Worried Man (two series), Jo in The Brief, Cleopatra IV in The Cleopatras, episodes of Minder, Bless This House, The New Avengers, Thriller, Sob Sisters, Growing Pains, Doctors, and Murder in Suburbia. She played Rowan Atkinson’s girlfriend in Canned Laughter and did numerous impersonations in two series of End of Part One. She played Maggie in Dear John, by John Sullivan and also appeared as Joan Forrester in Heartbeat for YTV, as Joan Travis in Revelations and as Rachel’s mum in Cold Feet, also for Granada. Much of Sue’s career has been spent doing Alan Ayckbourn plays, three of which (Relatively Speaking, Time and Time Again, and How The Other Half Loves) she toured with John Challis, who, of course, plays Boycie to Sue’s long-suffering wife, Marlene in Only Fools And Horses. Sue and John have also made four series of Green, Green Grass; (the spin-off from Only Fools and Horses), which was written especially for them. Sue regularly appears in pantomime, she was the wicked witch in Beauty and the Beast in Windsor, the good fairy in Jack and the Beanstalk in Richmond (so she can be good, but really rather prefers being bad), the wicked witch again in Beauty and the Beast in Eastbourne and the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Last year’s theatre included The Vagina Monologues and a highly successful tour of An Evening with Boycie & Marlene in which she and John Challis recreated their iconic roles as Boycie and Marlene around the country. Sue is joined on stage by an all star supporting cast including, in the lead role as Snow White, actress, singer and song writer Alexis Strum who says she will play the role with “a fresh perspective but still maintain the sweet innocence of Snow White”. Alexis has recently sung with Robbie Williams and has had Kylie record and perform one of her compositions called “Still Standing”. Also on stage playing Prince Danilo will be Stephen Dean and playing Dame Donut, Simon Bashford who is no stranger to panto as this is his 26th year in panto - many of you may have seen him 3 years ago at the Grove playing the dame in Cinderella. He said that playing the dame is just an extension of his person! Friday 14th December 2012 – Sunday 6th January 2013 Box Office 01582 60 20 80 Book Online www.grovetheatre.co.uk

The last, but definitely not the least offering is at The Stables in Wavendon near Milton Keynes. This could not be more different from the other two as it is not a panto but a family Christmas show telling the classic tale of The Secret Garden.
2012 marks one hundred and one years since Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic tale was first published - and what better way to celebrate than by bringing the whole family along to discover exactly what is behind the door? This is a brand new production based on Burnett’s book and is brought to life with classic story telling, puppetry, circus and a bit of good old fashioned theatrical magic. It is a journey beyond the door and into the garden of imagination so come and join Proteus Theatre Company as they tell a story of unlocking hearts and minds, the redemptive power of nature and why some rules should be broken. A fabulous production is nothing without a fabulous cast, and transporting you back to the Yorkshire Moors are James Laurence Hunter as ‘Dickon’ (who made his Proteus début last year in Frankenstein and has recently been involved in the Olympic Team Opening Ceremonies for London 2012), Paul Huntley-Thomas as ‘Ben Weatherstaff’ who made a lasting impression on audiences last year as the Creature in Frankenstein. New to the company are Ashley Christmas as Martha, Zoot Lynam, talented actor and musician, playing ‘Colin’ and Louisa Quinn, who will be taking on the leading lady ‘Mary Lennox’. Come along and experience the magic. The show runs from 19th December to 5th January 2013, show times and prices vary so call Box Office for details on 01908 280800 or book online at www.stables.org
Next month, in our third and final Christmas theatre feature, we will preview Cinderella at the MK theatre and Jack and the Beanstalk at The Hawthorne Theatre, Welwyn Garden City.

Animals and Friends - a Celebration of 50 Years of Music Featuring from The Animals -John Steel and Mickey Gallagher (The Blockheads, Paul McCartney, The Clash, Eurythmics) plus -Danny Handley (Performed alongside Spencer Davis, Bobby Elliott and Rick Lee) Peter Barton (The Mindbenders, Boomtown Rats) The band that shook the world back in 1964 have re-invented themselves ...quality and distinct sound that was, and still is, The Animals..." (Barry Kirk, Romford Recorder) The enduring influence and breadth of appeal of Animals & Friends and The Animals' music in 2010 (The Animals' 1964 debut was recently included in CLASSIC ROCK magazines' '50 Albums That Built Blues Rock)- is perhaps also exemplified by a typical snapshot of their tour diary of recent times; headlining Gloucester Blues Festival, storming The Rebellion Punk Festival; seizing the day at a Midlands rock festival (with ex-Scorpions guitarist, Michael Schenker) and headlining London's legendary 100 Club - twice in one year. In between they embarked on four massive UK tours with Special Guest Spencer Davis - which also played extensive dates in Scandinavia, where the band are regulars. Other Special Guests in recent years have included Stax, Booker T & The MGS and Blues Brothers guitar legend Steve Cropper, The Troggs and the late, great Mick Green (The Pirates, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Bryan Ferry) - which were the last shows by the guitarist viewed by many as one of the most influential in music. Their appeal continues abroad, too - with shows in Sweden, Portugal, Finland, Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Russia, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, Romania, Denmark, Finland, France, Ukraine, Belgium and Holland. Animals & Friends remain a seminal rhythm & blues band who still command great respect internationally amongst their peers as well as from fans of all ages who instinctively respond so enthusiastically to such pivotal songs from The Animals' catalogue such as 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place', 'Boom Boom', 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood', 'Baby, Let Me Take You Home', 'I Put a Spell On You' and the bands' multi-million selling anthem and Number One hit across the world 'House of The Rising Sun'. The Sticks recently caught up with John Steel the original drummer with the Animals in this their 50th year in the music business to chat about his music and his long career “We have been working almost solidly since 1962 when we were founded but it was 1990 when we last did a complete UK and Europe wide tour so it will be great fun as all of the guys playing with me just love performing, so we can promise you a wonderful show. The Animals are currently working on a new album going back to the old days and adding a different slant on it will be full of songs that have been influential in our career.” “One of my biggest regrets personally was that I never got to perform or sing with two of my idols, Elvis Presley or Fats Domino but would have loved to do that, especially as Hound Dog is one of my favourite songs. My favourite song is “House of the Rising Sun” which went to number 1 across the world, including the USA, in 1964, which we recorded first take in mono - the song has a wonderful atmosphere to it - not like nowadays where the music sounds clinical “ You see John Steel and The Animals live at Alban Arena on Saturday 17th November

The Searchers - 50 Years On In a remarkable career now spanning 5 decades, and with such classic hits as ‘Sweets For My Sweet’; ‘Needles and Pins’; ‘Don't Throw Your Love Away’, ‘Sugar and Spice’, ‘When You Walk In The Room’. In their 50th anniversary year the group comprisesJohn McNally (6 string guitar, 12 string guitar and vocals), Frank Allen (bass guitar, front man and vocals), Spencer James (guitar synthesiser and lead vocals) and Scott Ottaway (on drums) the newest recruit having joined them in 2010. When you think of The Searchers you think of the distinctive jangling sound of the twelve string guitar and the rich harmonies embellishing their immaculate vocals which have, without doubt, assured The Searchers of a lasting place in the history of popular music throughout the world. What you should also consider is longevity as this iconic legendary group is about to celebrate its fiftieth year in the pop music industry. Many contemporaries disbanded when their star faded only to reunite once the nostalgia boom kicked in with the onset of the eighties. Not so The Searchers, there were changes of course but the continuity was unbroken. From 1962 to now is a very long time and for a band to remain in existence for that length of time, let alone remain a potent force and influence, is rare. Of course the personnel altered over the years and John McNally, the founding member way back in the days of the embryonic stirrings of rock and roll, and Frank Allen, bass man since the middle of 1964, have faithfully preserved and, dare we say it, enhanced their treasured reputation and image to the present day. The Sticks was lucky enough to talk to Frank Allen about his career. What have you been up to recently? It has been a busy year this year as we are celebrating our 50 anniversary as a group so we have been touring most of the year. we were hoping to record this year but our last album “The History of The Searchers “ is still selling well Who would you had liked to sing with? Elvis, and of course Buddy Holly. We were lucky in the early 60’s to be asked to play in America where we did six shows a day with the amazing line-up of Dusty Springfield, Marvin Gaye, Little Milly, The Temptations, The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas to name but a few, we each did 1-3 songs each show. They were great days
- 18 -
Was that the highlight of you career so far? No, we have had two. The first one was in 1981 when we had two sell-out shows at Wembley Stadium with Cliff Richard as guests at Cliff, at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. What would you as a group like to be remembered for? remembered also I would love to get a record in the charts
I would just like to be
And finally what is your favourite Song? I have two I really like, one is ours “When You Walk In The Room” and the other is “Heartbreak Hotel “ by Elvis See Frank Allen together with The Searchers on Thursday 15th November at The Grove Theatre, Dunstable

Airrion Love and the Stylistics
Following the success of The O’Jays, The Spinners and The Delfonics, the City of Brotherly Love had just enough room for another highly successful soul group. That group came in the form of The Stylistics The Stylistics, with their charisma, style and harmony evolved into one of the best selling soul groups ever, as the Philadelphia based quartet recorded a remarkable 10 straight top ten hits during the early 1970’s. The story of The Stylistics is not only of success, it is one of early disappointment that eventually led to their meteoric rise. When the Monarchs and The Percussions, two moderately successful Philadelphia high school bands dissolved in the late 60’s, it set the state for a merger that would impact soul music for years. In 1968, under the suggestion of a teacher, the two disbanded high school groups decided to join forces. Russell Thompkins Jr., Airrion Love and James Smith of The Monarchs joined forces with James Dunn and Herbert Murrell of The Precussions, it was then that The Stylistics were born. In 1971 the group collaborated with producer Thom Bell, the ingenious creator of the “Philly Sound” to release their debut self titled album. The Stylistics would capture the imagination of the nation and the hearts of its women with their first single “You’re a Big Girl Now” which immediately became a top ten hit. The Stylistics had started as contemporaries or predecessors that appealed to the masses. With his style and delivery, fans and artists alike were mesmerized. Under the production of Bell, The Stylistics went on to produce 12 consecutive top ten hits from 1971 - 1974, culminating with their Grammy - Nominated hit “You Make Me Feel Brand New” It seemed every song the quintet released greeted the airwaves with fresh, artistic fervour. Their emphasis on smoother, sweeter ballads made them the antithesis of many of their contemporaries. Their tempo and style would vary effortlessly with each song. The Stylistics had carved themselves a reputation as perhaps the premier soul group during that span. They released their final album under Bell- “Heavy” - in 1974 but their popularity would not end there. Their 1975 release “The Best of the Stylistics” eventually earned double platinum honours, making it their highest selling album ever. As the years following the Bell/Creed collaboration passed and their production underwent a facelift. The Stylistics would undergo even more changes when Dunn & Smith left the group in the early 80s. They persevered, replacing the duo with Van Fields and Harold Brown.
- 20 -
As they evolved The Stylistics would appeal to a more mature audience while maintaining a global popularity. The release of their Stylistics Christmas album kicked off their 25th Anniversary world tour. They toured South Africa in 1996 playing in front of a crowd of 35,000 at Johannesburg Stadium. They began another world tour in November 2000 in England which then stormed into Singapore and finished in Hong Kong on New Years Eve. The Stylistics also continue to tour with the 70’s Soul Jam Tour which plays to sold out crowds across the nation. With their 1996 release of “Love Talk” The Stylistics have proven themselves to be a pillar of longevity in a genre rife with one hit wonders and break-ups. Altogether, The Stylistics appeared on over 40 albums including compilations. What started as the innocent union of two ex high school bans developed into one of the longest standing, most accomplished soul bands to grace the R & B scene. They continue to perform as only they can, bringing with them the sweet soulful memories of year’s past. The Sticks recently spoke to Stylistics singer Airrion Love at his home in Philadelphia How long is it since you last toured the UK? We come over every year to the UK and always love what we do. Is there anyone you would like to work or sing with? Would had loved to have sung or performed with the Bee Gees but sadly that’s not going to happen now. Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? None, I just want to carry on enjoying the music and travel. What has been the highlight of your career so far? Without doubt in 1973, the double Platinum selling record “Rock And Roll Baby “ What has been the low point? The advent of Disco What would you like to be remembered for? The music and that I had a good heart What is your favourite song? Diana Ross’ “You Make Me Feel Brand New “ Do you like to cook and what is your favourite food? I like to cook pot roast and macaroni cheese, as for eating I like all the wrong things so I have to go to the gym three times a week if not touring When you are not working what do you like to do to relax? I enjoy reading, especially computer books as I was a programmer a long time ago. Also love going to theatre and concerts - I saw the Lion King recently it was amazing! Also I am off to see Barbara Streisand soon; I have always wanted to see her live. What’s your idea of a perfect day or weekend? On my boat cruising along and fishing

SO YOU WANT TO BE YOUR OWN BOSS ? There always seem to be programmes on television lately on how to be your own boss and what you can do with only a small amount of start-up investment. With redundancies an unfortunate everyday reality in the current economic climate, starting up your own business can be a really exciting and challenging alternative to updating your CV. However, there are also the terrifying statistics of how many new businesses close within their first year. So the mantra of “be prepared” is really important. There are a number of basic points to consider:• Where is your funding coming from? • Have you done a Business plan? • Are you going to be a sole trader or work in partnership with one or two others, or even set up a limited company? • Do you need premises and/or staff? • Have you got a friendly accountant to provide you with tax advice? • Have you taken any legal advice? On the last point, it is really important to get any paperwork organised early on – for example drawing up an agreement between business partners to spell out who does what and who gets what. Sometimes Shareholder’s Agreements and Director’s Service Agreements are useful as a point of reference if things start to get a little bit shaky as sometimes happens in business. We think that getting the basics right from the start gives you a stable basis for your business from which to succeed and make a decent profit - which is really what you want. You may be employing staff and so you will need to deal with their Employment Contracts. You may need to deal with Landlords regarding Commercial Leases for premises and without proper legal advice you might be signing up to something far beyond what you had intended, which could end up costing you a lot of money. You may decide to take on a franchise, which again needs careful consideration and good legal advice. At Curwens LLP, we are always happy to have an initial chat with you on the telephone to run through exactly what help you need. So if you have any questions just give us a ring on 01992 463727 or have a look at our website www.curwens.co.uk. It’s the time of year when my household starts to sound like the Brompton Chest Hospital with the kids coughing through the night. Interestingly they usually wake up smiling and right as rain while I am exhausted from playing night nurse! Of course we all know that prevention is better than cure so how can we boost our immunity (and our kids!)? It really pays to take the natural approach to common ailments, hopefully you won’t have to darken the door of the pharmacy other than to buy sticking plasters and you’ll find much of what you need in your kitchen cupboard. 1.

Get Juicy …and smoothie! For all year round ‘health insurance’ get into fresh Juicing. I strongly urge you to dig out your juicer from the attic or invest in a new one, preferably one that takes fruit whole so it makes the job quicker. Go for green; add in broccoli stalk (very high in vitamin C) fresh beetroot, cabbage, cucumber et al. Add a frozen wheatgrass shot, packed full of vitamins and minerals. You may also want to add in a tablespoon of raw organic coconut oil (see resources) Herbs Herbs can be used to protect against and cure infection, some can be consumed as teas or tinctures and of course you can buy capsules or supplements, one of the easiest is Garlic – it’s known as ‘Russian Penicillin’ for its Antibacterial and Anti-oxidant properties. Oregano is a very potent essential oil and brilliant for fighting off infections, doesn’t taste great though so take one tiny drop in apple juice or similar. Elderberry tincture works well for colds and flu also. Sweeten up with Honey Olympic Gold medallist Victoria Pendleton swears by Manuka honey to ward off a cold at the first sign of a snuffle. Eat it on toast or crush a clove of garlic into a spoonful of Manuka honey then it’s a double whammy antibacterial hit! Opt for one of the healing honeys or the amazing raw high factor Manuka honeys. Drink to it It’s official, most conventional cough medicines don’t really work, it’s much more effective to soothe the symptoms with a warm drink such as honey and lemon. You can make your own cough ‘medicine’ too, just coat an onion with brown - 24 -

sugar, leave it overnight and strain off the syrup the next morning. You can also make your own lemon barley water. Gargle with lukewarm sage tea. Steam Power For colds, nasal congestion and snuffles you can’t beat the power of steam inhalation. Put a few drops of Tea Tree or Eucalyptus oil in a bowl of hot water and drape a towel over your head as you sit around 12 inches away from the water. (You get a free facial too!) For young children you can make a kind of tent by placing the bowl on the floor, sitting on a chair and draping a big blanket over a few other chairs, sit with the infant on your knee and breathe deeply, kids think it’s great fun! (Of course make sure the bowl of water is out of harms reach). Get moving Moderate exercise such as fast walking really helps to boost immunity and releases feel good hormones. Yoga and Dancing reduce stress and improve flexibility but don’t overdo it in the Gym if you feel a cold coming on. You may know I’m a huge fan of Nia, it’s a blend of nine movement forms from the healing arts, dance arts and martial arts, but you take it entirely at your own level. Relax High stress levels can lead to suppressed immunity so make time for yourself, relax in a warm bath, perhaps light a candle and add Himalyan salt to the water. You may want to listen to a guided visualisation or meditation audio. Up Your Vit D Check your Vitamin D levels, it greatly affects immunity yet its thought we are in the midst of an international epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency. I was shocked when I finally had mine tested to find I was an all time low of 12 !! Between 30 and 50 is recommended by the medical professional but I’m personally aiming for over 100. You will almost certainly need to supplement during the winter months so my recommendation is an oral spray. Think yourself well The power of the mind is incredible and the wonderful effects of visualisation can’t be over-estimated. So one final note - Stay happy! Even conventional medicine recognises that an increased sense of wellbeing enhances immunity. A recent review of the health effects of laughter found it has a significant place in the prevention and treatment of illnesses. So it’s official. Laughter really is the best medicine!

Food Ideas from Pearce’s Farmshop & Cafe There is plenty of fresh, tasty seasonal food to enjoy in November; it’s the season for an abundance of fish and shellfish as the water around our islands gets colder. We begin to have the rich game meats, the sloes and quinces to make delicious preserves, English pears are a juicy treat and the first frosts mean the sweetest of parsnips – do look out for the piccolo variety, small but tender and full of flavour. I also welcome the arrival of more unusual offerings such as the classy Jerusalem artichoke.
Jerusalem artichokes should not be confused with globe artichokes; they are not from Jerusalem either but they are quite delicious. They belong to the sunflower family and the name is derived from girasole, the Italian for sunflower. They do have pretty yellow flowers but it is the plant’s small brown-skinned knobbly underground tubers that are eaten. The taste of the white flesh is sweet, nutty and rather sophisticated as they can be transformed into wonderful side dishes and stand alone treats. Don’t be put off by their knobbliness as there’s no real need to peel them, just scrub clean, with a teaspoon in fact works well. When peeled they do need putting into water acidulated with lemon juice straight away or they quickly become black. If you have brought a real knobbly variety parboil them for five minutes, then slip off the skins when cooled.
Their sweetness makes them wonderful partners for a range of different flavours. A smooth velvet Jerusalem artichoke purée is heaven and perfect paired with the bitter leaves of chicory, radicchio or endive or anything salty such as bacon, cured pork or chorizo, or try it with roast cod and an anchovy and caper salsa. The sweetness is also a good contrast to meaty dishes such as beef, game as well as with wild mushrooms. Jerusalem artichokes can be cooked in much the same way as potatoes or parsnips. Excellent roasted in olive oil and herbs when their sweetness is condensed; they make a great mash either by themselves or 50:50 with potatoes – be generous with butter and pepper, layer them in a gratin or with potatoes in a dauphinoise, slice and sauté in butter with a few sage leaves until crisp on the outside, soft inside. And they make a luxurious creamy soup. They also work very well raw with a crunch and crispness of water chestnuts. Grate them finely with carrots and serve with a lemon dressing. A word of warning however, they can induce windiness, so not an ideal vegetable for a romantic dinner!

Jerusalem Artichoke Terrine with Tomato Salsa Ingredients 1.5kg Jerusalem artichokes peeled and cleaned 8 eggs 1.5 pint double cream 5 shallots finely diced Bunch of tarragon chopped Bunch of chopped thyme 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped 4 tbsp truffle oil Ingredients for Salsa For 4 2 tomatoes chopped small 2 shallots finely chopped 2 cloves garlic finely chopped 1 piece fresh ginger about 1 cm long
Method Thinly slice the artichokes, and place to one side. Mix all the other ingredients together. Mix with the artichokes. Line a terrine mould with 4 sheets of cling film. Pack the mixture into the mould, pull the cling film over so it’s all covered, then tightly cover the terrine in tin foil, place in a tray of boiling water in the oven at 160⠰C for an hour. Make sure a knife slides cleanly in with no resistance. Put in the fridge over night to chill before serving. Mix the salsa ingredients together with a little olive oil and serve with the terrine and olive ciabatta bread.

Road Test - the Chrysler Ypsilon Category: 5dr Supermini Hatchback Fuel: 57.6 – 74.3 mpg
OTR Price: £10,695 to £15,495 CO2: 99 - 115g/km
If you think cars have become homogenised boxes without anything to separate them from one another, you should take a look at the Chrysler Ypsilon – because this is one small supermini hatchback that really does stand out from the crowd. From the dramatic front grille to the incomparable rear, it is certainly different. Its quirky look certainly turns heads. That distinctive look on the outside is translated to the inside, where the centrally-mounted instrument binnacle gives this car the feel of an MPV. You could even say there is a bit of a premium feel, especially in the car that we drove with its piano-black dashboard inserts and its leather-clad seats. Standard equipment is quite good with leather-bound steering wheel, six airbags, air conditioning, alloy wheels and heated door mirrors all coming as standard. If you really want to push the boat out, you could always opt for the top-of-the-range Limited model (as seen in our pictures) which brings you those leather seats, an upgrade to climate control and USB for your stereo. Most people should be able to find themselves a comfortable driving position. Make sure you travel light though, because in-cabin storage is severely lacking. The boot is a decent size for a supermini. Life in the front is good but taller passengers in the rear will be rubbing their heads on the roof. Prospective owners have a choice of two petrol engines (900cc 84bhp, or 1.2-litre 68bhp) or a 1.3 Multijet diesel producing 94bhp. The smaller petrol engine emits only 92g/km CO2 – so road tax is free. It’ll propel the Ypsilon from 0-60 in 11.5 seconds and onto a top speed of 109mph. On paper fuel consumption figures impress with a combined 67.3mpg on offer which can be assisted by deploying the ecomode which uses the engines torque and the stop-start mode if you are in the City. The diesel punches above its weight. It is eager and makes the most of its 148lb ft of pulling power. Economy is good. On paper it can average 74.3mpg on the combined cycle and emits 99g/km making it affordable in fuel and tax bills. The Chrysler badges belies the fact that the little Ypsilon is based on Fiat Panda – and that brings the same benefits, meaning the high gear lever and the light easy steering which can be made even lighter if you have to negotiate a tight manoeuvre at the press of the ‘city’ button. It also inherits the Panda-like charm. Those looking for a compact, chic car which stands out from the supermini crowd and which comes with the added practicality over a MINI or Fiat 500 in the form of a decent boot and five doors need look no further than the Chrysler Ypsilon. This is an abridged version of a road test featured on MerMorMotorMedia.com. The full road test can be read by following http://www.mermormotormedia.com/firstimpressions/chrysler/chrysler-ypsilon/

Watford Filmhouse favourite, Ken Loach directs Angels’ Share in which Robbie narrowly avoids jail and vows to turn over a new leaf when a visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a novel way out of their hopeless lives. This highly enjoyable film attempts something quite difficult in combining a gritty drama about mindless urban violence with a feel-good, rural comedy. Almost unbelievably, it succeeds in this, with the comedy coming to the fore in the second half of the film as it looks beyond the criminality to the humanity and the possibilities inherent even in the most damaged young people who are caught up in the system. It’s an unusual film that leaves you laughing whilst it makes you think and weep. Doors and bar open at 7.15pm, film at 7.45pm. Tickets: Members £3 Non-members £5. Membership £10 per annum. Can his lawyer unravel the increasingly complex relationships at the heart of this mystery? This is one of Agatha Christie’s best known titles. It started life as a short story which she adapted into a successful stage play in 1953. She said in her autobiography, “It was one of my plays that I liked best myself. I was nearly as satisfied with that play as I have been with any.” In 1957, it became a hugely successful film. A ’thrilling’ evening - don’t miss it! mistake: One should never do anything one cannot talk about after dinner…” A gripping tale of love, honour, duty, fortune-telling and murder! This hilarious retelling of the classic story revels in the wit of Wilde, while borrowing (rather cheekily) from Wodehouse, to create a wicked black comedy that positively fizzes with fun. Join Lord Arthur and his valet, for an evening of ludicrous indulgence. information. Shillington Village Hall, High Road, Shillington, SG5 3LX The Magic of Motown is coming to The Grove Theatre, Dunstable - Friday 30 Nov American performers – they’re loud, they’re brash. But, as any concertgoer knows, on stage an American artist will out-perform a British artist every time. Take, for instance, forty five years ago. America wowed the world with tightly-choreographed concert shows by talented Tamla Motown artists The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations. The best the UK could offer was Lulu, Dusty Springfield and the Bee Gees. Great artists but not a patch on their American counterparts when it came to performing live. So, why is it that American artists shine brightest when the follow spots light the stage? “It goes back to what we’re taught in stage school,” says Florida-raised singer Andre Lejaune, star of hit concert show The Magic of Motown. The show starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £24.00 & £21.50 depending on seating position, box office number 01582 602080. Grove Park, Dunstable, LU5 4GP
