Exclusive Interview with Roachford

Ever since bulldozing his way onto the scene with unforgettable tracks like ‘Cuddly Toy’ and ‘Family Man’ in the late 80s, Andrew Roachford’s maverick take on music has spread far and wide. As the first artist to sign a staggering seven-album deal with Columbia Records, it heralded the beginning of something big. Born into a musical dynasty, his uncle Bill Roachford was a virtuoso saxophonist. The musical ball really started to roll however, when Andrew hit the road with his uncle. Playing gigs on the jazz circuit in those days, gave him a good grounding for things to come. He got lucky enough to start gigging when I was about 14 and was in the middle of that whole jazz scene which was an interesting education. It taught him musically, how to listen and how to entertain. My uncle always told him that you had to give people a show. Andrew’s trademark has become his rare ability to put into words, feelings you didn’t even know you had. Andrew Roachford has been approached by such luminaries as Michael Jackson and Chaka Khan to write songs. Andrew Roachford is back with a stunning new album - ‘Encore’. This powerfully emotive and soulful album brilliantly showcases Andrew’s unique song Interpretation of some classic tracks and brings a fresh take in a way only he can. The Sticks caught up with him ahead of his tour. In 1989 you had a top 4 hit with the iconic song “Cuddly Toy” how do you feel about the song now? It has been one of those songs that has followed me all of my life. Is that a good thing or bad thing? It is a good thing, I went through a phase of thinking that’s great but I have been recording albums all my life and it would be good to hear the other stuff as well. Then I went to a Prince gig and he did not play “Purple Rain” and I got it then, this song “Cuddly Toy” means something to people in their thoughts and a certain point in their lives. I wrote “Cuddly Toy” with the intention of not recording it but thankfully the record company talked me into recording it, I just wanted to use it as an extra live track. The song was a little in joke with one of the guys in the band, which is a long story a rather bizarre one that I tend to leave to peoples imagination.

4

You have a new album out called “Encore” why is it called that? The reason is when I do gigs, on the encore I would do songs with just me and a piano and a couple of the songs I used to do were reinterpretations of classic songs, so it was suggested I recorded some of them. That’s how it started. Some people say you should never record a covers album, however all of the artists I have actually grown up listening to - they have done great cover versions of songs including Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and the list goes on. I thought I can reinterpret songs and they are not karaoke versions so that is why I thought it was ok. You come from a musical dynasty? Yes my uncle is a sax player, bless him, he is the one who raised me and taught me most of what I know about music. I consider the man a genus. My uncle Bill has moved back to Barbados but he used to play the jazz clubs and pub circuit all around Soho back in the days as they call it and I ended up working with him when I was quite young, that was my schooling of the live scene, working with all of the older heads but he never taught me to play the sax, I think he was so good at it, it would have been a scary idea to even start. I was like a fan of his. I used to hear him rehearse at the house but when I first saw him at a gig playing live I was blown away. You started your musical career as a child, being mysteriously drawn from bed to play the piano in the living room? Yes, it is a weird story, I was a kid of 4 years old, there had always been musical instruments in the house and I had never touched or looked twice at any of them. One morning I woke up and went downstairs and it was like 3am or something and I went over to the piano and just started banging away at it and it was the most beautiful experience I had had at that time. I woke my mum up and she came down and said “you have got to get this boy at least playing in tune” but she knew that was my calling. I now write mostly on the piano, occasionally I use the guitar as I like the strumming sound, it is odd - as I have got older I have fallen in love with the guitar but piano is my main instrument. I love Jimi Hendrix, I think there is something about the connection with the guitar and he fact that you actually walk around and play, I envy guitarists in that way also they can always have the instrument with them so can just play at will, with a piano it is a bit harder to do that. Who were your musical heroes when you were growing up? I think being a musician it would take me about an hour to name everyone, so many people I listened to, when I turn on the radio there was something that would influence your whole vision and direction but obviously Jimi Hendrix, all of the Motown artists and then the 70’s rock plus the early 80’s stuff as a kid, I got something from them all, it gave me a diverse influence as did growing up in a Caribbean household.

5

You signed a seven-album deal with Columbia Records then for the next 10 years you were their biggest selling domestic act. At the time it did not occur to me how big a deal it was because I had nothing to gauge it by. I knew I had a record deal which was great but I did not know that being signed for 7 albums was something that did not normally happen. I am the sort of person that it is about the music first and foremost, and not like wow, fame and fortune. Now I look back it was very significant and they had a lot of faith in me as an artist. You have been touring with Mike and The Mechanics recently? Yes, for the last 6 years. It was crazy that I was asked to join up with them. I am actually writing songs with them now and they are part of their new album. It is amazing to sing on stage with them as they have two singers - it is like stereo singers; it is a very powerful sound. Mike likes great voices and it was an honour he chose me.

Do you still get nervous before you go on stage? Yes I always do, I am not even quite sure why, it is a different kind of nerves, unlike my fear of flying which I do have a bit. Walking on stage is different too because you care about the show and I never know what’s going to happen as I am very improvisational, two shows have never been the same in my life. It is in the hands of the gods sometimes, I feel like I walk on stage with artists pass and present, I don’t feel like I walk on stage alone, as for the energy and what is coming from me, I feel it is bigger than me and I need to represent it. What is the oddest gift you have received from a fan? Well the other day I got a jigsaw puzzle but the picture was of me, puzzled I was but it was lovely because a gift is still a gift and you should be thankful. I have also had cakes with my picture or an album cover on too.

Top Five HR Tips People are a vital and volatile asset for any business. Effective HR saves time and offers business owners flexibility. These ‘must do’ tips will help keep your team working efficiently and harmoniously. 1. Know Your Team It’s crucial that you know who is fully engaged with your business and its direction – and who isn’t. The sickness absence of disengaged employees is almost 230% that of engaged team members. (Gallup research shows 6.2 days compared with 2.7 days per year.) Can your business afford to lose these extra days? Top tip: Listen to and involve all team members so that everyone feels a key part of your business, promoting commitment and flexibility. 2. Manage Unique Individuals Acknowledge and support team members’ skills, style and requirements to get the most from each individual. Everyone is unique! If you have employees, you need a Performance Management system (Appraisal), which will capture business and personal goals. Matthew from Consensus HR explains: “Performance management involves regular conversations and meetings with your team. It will help you to highlight who is going the extra mile to make the business a success and who shirking responsibility.” Top tip: Include SMART goal setting within your Appraisals, (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time based). 3. Get the Right Talent in the Right Place Research shows that on average the cost for recruiting an employee in the UK is £8,000. It is therefore vital that your recruit the right person for the role. “Too many business owners recruit people based upon first impressions, on their gut feel,” explains Matthew Pinto-Chilcott. “When recruiting you need to look at the Job Description and identify what skills and competencies are required for the ideal candidate.” Top tip: Create a thorough Job Description Top tip: Avoid rash or personal recruitment decisions 4. Avoid Chinese Whispers Chinese whispers are common in business; you must communicate effectively. Remember that some people like to listen and others prefer to read. Ask your team how they would like to be communicated with. Then, put in place the best solution and manage it going forward.

18

Top tip: Check! Make sure that employees have understood what you’ve communicated. 5. Know Where You Are! Your workforce is one of your key business assets. It needs to be managed correctly. Do you know who is your worst offender for sickness absence? How are you managing this? In 2014/15, 23.3 million days were lost due to workrelated ill health and 4.1 million due to workplace injuries (Health & Safety Executive). Measuring your business’ HR performance gives an essential understanding of where you are. Only then can you realistically decide where you want to be. Plus – simple key measures make HR processes such as performance management or redundancy far more effective and save valuable time. Top tip: Set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for your HR function These five tips apply to every business with employees. HR doesn't have to be complicated. If you would like to discuss any of the above points, let us know. Contact Matthew at Consensus HR via email or call 01462 621243, 0774 7789279. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUYING A HOME Your home is probably the most important and expensive thing you will ever buy. So, it is important that you know as much as you can about what you’re buying. When you buy a home, you are buying it in its actual condition and the seller does not have to tell you about any problems unless you ask. This is why it is so important to properly investigate the property and ask the right questions. When you enter into a contract to buy a property, the law expects you to make sure you know what you need to know about the property. So, once you have found your dream home and the seller has accepted your offer, you should instruct a solicitor or a conveyancer who can help you to investigate the property. They will consider the contracts and information, and will raise any suitable enquiries on your behalf. This is also the time for you to ask any other questions you have about the property. You can obtain searches or surveys which will tell you more about the property and the local area; for example: A local authority search which tells you if there are plans for any major roads or footpaths that will affect the property, or if you have to pay to maintain the road. An environmental search which tells you if the property is in a high risk area for flooding or contamination. A structural survey which tells you about the state of the building. These searches are important, because if the results raise any ‘red flags’, you can ask more questions and prepare yourself for any other costs or responsibilities which you hadn’t planned for. Once you have ‘exchanged contracts’ you are legally committed to buying the property on the day you have agreed to ‘complete’. So, you should only ‘exchange contracts’ once you have properly investigated and you feel you know everything you need to know about your new home. Curwens have offices in Royston (01763 241 261), Hoddesdon (01992 463 727) and Enfield (0208 363 4444).

Your Home, Your Development, Your Budget. Make it happen. Now is the time to really overhaul/reconfigure your garden or home. With your concept we can create vision within a realistic budget. With our know-how and 17years of experience our multitalented team can transform homes. Create/extend/redesign Patios. Make-over your garden or upgrade with raised beds and built in irrigation systems. Install soft mood enhancing Garden Lighting and Water Features and fit ultra efficient Patio heaters (see supplier website Primrose London for ideas and supplies). Garden Rooms ~ these are the future. No more ‘too cold in winter/too hot in summer’ glass extensions. The origin of a conservatory was an ornamental glass ‘tacked-on’ extension with low watt heating to keep frost out, for the use of keeping exotic or vulnerable plants. Little evolved after that in the thought of how it was to be actually used. The new concept is a well- insulated triple glazed room with a tiled roof and underfloor heating, ideally using solar panels or recycled heat pump air flow thus making a room that will be used all year round. A well thought out patio leading from this with under parasol heating can really extend the season of entertaining outdoors making your garden a place of calm and solace with low maintenance (membrane and cotstone shingle), irrigated (timer weeping-irrigation system) with soft lighting and low running cost patio heaters ~ is a lot easier than you think . But be mindful of harmony in nature too. Plant for Birds /Bees/Butterflies will bring pleasure and good Karma . Flood Defence. Every time you or your neighbours/developer build and make a ‘footprint’ on concrete, coupled with removing trees and hedges, this vastly reduces where rainwater can filter away . The result is being made evident with each passing winter ~ flooding! Sadly many home owners are unaware of the consequences. Homes are destroyed or damaged, gardens flooded with contaminated foul waste water with toxic residues being left behind in the soil, subsidence and foundation damage. All these are bad enough, worse still, Home Insurance rises significantly and then also saleability/ability to get a mortgage are the very worst outcomes, but are reality. If you are unsure of the possible risk of flooding send me an email for a free brief site visit or chat. Kate ~ www.the-otherroom.co.uk

Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes November ARIES March 21st - April 20th Your love life will sizzle with excitement in the early days of November. If you don't have a partner, you could find one at a theatre, concert or gallery. There's a good chance you will fall head over heels in love with a powerful executive. Are you already in a relationship? Be receptive to your amour's overtures. The two of you will have fun reconnecting. An impressive amount of money could land in your bank account on the 14th, thanks to the Full Moon. Use some of this cash to further your career. A smart interview suit, new computer and advertising campaign are all good professional investments. Beware of making promises you can't deliver during the second half of the month. Setting up a loved one for disappointment will create tremendous resentment. The New Moon on the 29th will force you into unfamiliar territory. Ask for guidance when you're not sure what to do or how to behave.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd An exciting opportunity to travel will arrive at the beginning of November; there's never been a better time to take a dream holiday. If you're single, you will meet someone special on this journey. Are you already in a relationship? You and your amour will enjoy a second honeymoon. If you're looking for work during the first half of the month, you'll have to be particularly aggressive. Don't be afraid to discuss your talent and accomplishments during job interviews. The Full Moon on the 14th brings a successful conclusion to a group project. As a result, bigger and better opportunities will be offered to you. Be selective about which jobs you accept. It's important to hold out for work that offers a creative challenge. Don't let your romantic partner eclipse your needs towards the end of the month. The New Moon on the 29th will prompt you to get attention for a health matter.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Your love life will be enriching at the beginning of November. This is the best time of the entire year to get engaged or married. Entering a business alliance is also looking good. Two heads are better than one at the beginning of November. The Full Moon on the 14th will prompt a loved one to give you a beautiful gift. Be sure to show your appreciation for this generous token. Work could feel oppressive during the second half of the month, due to an annoying repair project. It may be difficult to find peace and quiet. Exercise patience with a colleague who wears on your nerves. Show respect for their superior knowledge and expertise. You may need their help on the 29th, when the New Moon makes you aware of limited resources. By teaming up, you can produce impressive work on a tiny budget. Summon your creative powers as November turns to December.

LEO July 24th - August 23rd Money from a grant, loan or scholarship will become available in early November. These additional resources will allow you to lead a more comfortable life. Having more time for creative pursuits will give you an attractive glow throughout the first half of the month. If you're single, you could meet someone special at a sporting event or gym. You'll have to play the aggressor in this relationship. The Full Moon on the 14th marks an exciting turning point in your career. You could land a high profile job, get a big pay rise or be given an impressive promotion. During the second half of the month, you should be as discreet as possible at work. Don't discuss your personal life with colleagues or you will later regret it. The New Moon on the 29th warns against taking emotional and financial risks. It's best to maintain the status quo as November turns to December.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Work will be financially and emotionally rewarding in the opening days of November. If you're unhappy with your job, look for another. An influential friend will write you an impressive reference. The Full Moon on the 14th will prompt you to withdraw from public life. Solitary pursuits like reading, writing and communing with nature can energise you. It's also possible you will be spending more time with a beloved pet. Your romantic partner will give you the strength to take a bold risk. Abandon the status quo for something new and daring. You may experience a setback, but treat it as a learning experience. The next time, you will be better prepared to meet challenges. The New Moon on the 29th warns against mixing business with pleasure. If you're looking for love, find it with someone who doesn't work with you. Similarly, it isn't a good idea to form a professional alliance with a friend.

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd Your love life will sizzle with excitement in early November. This is a great time to embark on a romance. Getting engaged or married is also possible. The Full Moon on the 14th brings the satisfying conclusion of a legal matter. As a result, you'll have more time for your favourite hobbies and creative pursuits. The second half of November could put some strain on finances. Be as frugal as possible. Fortunately, you don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun with your nearest and dearest. AQUARIUS Jan 21st - Feb 19th An opportunity for career advancement will arrive in early November. Don't be afraid of taking a job that involves a great deal of responsibility. You'll enjoy assuming a new challenge. It may be necessary to intimidate detractors who poke fun at your unorthodox methods. The sooner you establish you mean business, the more successful you will be. The Full Moon on the 14th will find you spending quality time with your family. This is a wonderful chance to reconnect with your nearest and dearest. Attending a recital, game or performance will be lots of fun. The second half of November will be a wonderfully social time. Attend as many parties and casual get togethers. The New Moon on the 29th will cause you to question your priorities. Devoting more time to the activities you love will create a scandal. People who have come to rely on you to perform their dirty work will protest. Ignore these complaints.

SCORPIO October 24th – Nov 22nd You're feeling good and looking good in early November. Take this opportunity to embark on a passionate romance. If you're already in a relationship, you and your amour will be especially affectionate throughout the first half of November. This would be a lovely time to give your partner a beautiful token of your affection. The Full Moon on the 14th marks a turning point in a close relationship. A business or romantic partnership will dramatically improve your social stature. You will have to spend money to make money during the second half of the month. Invest in a new car, computer or smartphone. Don't listen to petty criticism as November turns to December. A jealous rival will do everything in their power to shake your confidence. If the New Moon on the 29th results in a loss of income, remain positive. This will be a welcome opportunity to find more rewarding work.

PISCES February 20th - March 20th The opportunity to travel, study or write will arrive in early November. Expanding your horizons will give you an attractive glow that is hard to resist. The Full Moon on the 14th will allow you to capitalise on expert knowledge. Providing training for a group of professionals will be a stimulating challenge. It will be easier to command respect during the second half of the month, when people will be more receptive to your creative approach. Resist the temptation to lend or borrow money in late November. Nothing will destroy a relationship faster than mixing finance with friendship. The New Moon on the 29th warns against accepting additional work responsibilities. It will take more time to master your existing duties. Don't rush to climb the ladder to success too soon.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd - Dec 21st Solitary pursuits will give you a welcome chance to recharge your batteries in early November. Working on a compelling creative project will be lots of fun. Don't show your work to others until you're completely happy with the results. The Full Moon on the 14th will attract a terrific job offer. Having regular pay will allow you to build financial stability. If you've been struggling to sell a property, you'll be successful during the second half of the month. Turn a deaf ear to friends who tell you to hold out for more money. The New Moon on the 29th warns against adopting a different look. If you want to make a change, devote more time to creative pursuits. Playing sports can be another way to let off steam. Being outdoors never fails to lift your spirits. Wellbeing This Winter During the winter months it can be tricky looking after our skin and ensuring that we keep our immunity boosted. With the onslaught of the Christmas and New Year festivities many of us find we not only pile on the pounds but our skin and hair can look dull and lifeless too. My suggestion is to prepare your skin for the party season and new year by going natural. Don’t panic, I’m not suggesting that you ditch the makeup and eschew the gorgeous pampering products, on the contrary I’m suggesting you try the absolute best of what’s out there in the natural and organic sector. They do say don’t put anything on your skin you can’t eat and if you opt for natural and organic skincare, you’ll be doing just fine. Starting with the bathing, create your own natural spa, get some organic towels, light a candle and relax in a bath with the gorgeous handmade seasonal botanical bath salts from Rhythm of beauty. http://www.rhythmofbeauty.co.uk/

Treat yourself to the Indulgent Organic Mini Spa Set from Conscious Skincare, includes body polish and body wash, bath soak and body butter, lotion or oil for moisturising. www.conscious-skincare.com

Avoid harsh soaps too, you’ll be amazed how drying conventional soaps can be, look for handmade soaps that don’t contain sodium laurel sulphates, parabens and synthetic fragrances. I love the soaps made from ethically sourced natural ingredients from Soapy Skin, they’re designed for people with skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis and acne. The Goats' Milk Honey Oats Soap can soothe, moisturise and protect the skin. They only use ethically sourced ingredients from sustainable sources. www.soapyskin.co.uk Look after your hair and scalp While you’re bathing it’s a good idea to treat your hair, avoid harsh shampoos and nourish the hair and scalp instead with the unique Herbal hair and scalp oil from Samol Herbal, it’s an age old Unani remedy for providing essential nutrients in a powerful blend of luxurious natural herbs and organic cold pressed oils You can use around 8 drops, massage into the scalp and you can even wrap your hair in a towel and leave overnight, everything will be silky soft after you have washed it through the next morning. www.samolherbal.com www.imperfectlynatural.com

Food and Wine Pairing

As the sun begins to set earlier and the days become shorter it’s time to soothe our passage towards winter. This is a great opportunity to retrieve the casserole pot and cook something to comfort and cosset. Jennifer Patterson was a great cook and a wonderful entertainer. Here, I offer two of her receipts* for your pleasure and an accompanying bottle to soothe: Casserole of Wild Rabbit with Cream and Tarragon The rabbit is cooked simply so as not to overpower its gentle gamey flavour. An excellent match for this dish is a wine equally restrained: Poggio Anima, Lilith (£10 p/btl). This is a Primitivo from Puglia, Italy. On the nose one can detect cherry drops, rich fertile soil and cocoa. The palate is austere and light with lean, crunchy dark fruit flavours to the fore. The Primitivo grape variety is also known by the name Zinfandel. No such big statements of intent here, just…… Beef Stew with red wine and brandy A seemingly simple dish once again, but this time Patterson supports the beef with salt pork and pig’s trotters! I’m grinning at the gelatinous richness as I write this. If Jennifer has upped her game, so must we: Odfjell, Armador Merlot (£11.50 p/btl). This is a wine of power and poise with a splash of Syrah in the blend to spice things up. The nose presents dried figs, cocoa and violets. The palate is awash with dark, ripe plums, allspice, ginger and velvety tannins to match the stew perfectly. * Receipts is the name Jennifer Patterson gave to all her written recipes.

To win a bottle of this wine please send your name and contact details to thesticks9@gmail.com before noon on Wednesday 30th November If you would like a copy of the receipts or to order any wine please contact me stelios@wine2trade.com www.wine2trade.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/Wine2Trade-175892769117441/ https://twitter.com/Wine2TradeUK https://www.instagram.com/wine2trade/?hl=en

Modern Bread v Real Bread?

I went to a bread factory recently and saw how machines and 5 humans make 1 million loaves of fluffy sliced bread that stays fresh for a week. This compares to the 30 minutes I spend per week making two loaves of organic sourdough bread. The factory bread is made using English wheat flour, water, yeast, added gluten, raising agent, sugar and preservative, and takes 1 hour to ‘prove’ from mix to bake (to allow the bread to rise). My bread is made with organic flour and water and takes 10 hours to prove. The added gluten, raising agent, preservatives and short proving time is not good for us but given the choice and lack of knowledge most consumers want their bread brilliant white, extra fluffy and sliced. The bread company has even carried out a survey about additives and found that their customers want them to continue making the same bread. My bread is made with white flour that is actually light brown because it has been slowly, stone ground to leave the wheat germ intact. (the factory flour has been bleached and the germ destroyed by fast steel roller mills). The yeast I use is a live culture kept from a previous loaf and the 10 hours proving time allows the yeast to break down the carbohydrates in the flour to make the bread much easier to digest. My bread is not as fluffy but tastes delicious and for ingredients and cooking costs is 50% cheaper than the supermarket price for the factory bread. No wonder so many people have taken up bread making and buying quality flour. What I find amazing is that the bread factory could make bread exactly like mine by simply buying better flour, removing the additives and drastically slowing down the proving process. So I wonder: Is this ‘bad bread’ causing gluten intolerance and contributing to diabetes and increased NHS cost? Should the government sponsor a campaign about the virtues of quality bread to improve health and reduce NHS cost?
