Exclusive Interview with John Lodge of The Moody Blues
The Moody Blues' John Lodge, bass guitarist and vocalist, was born in Birmingham, England. John bought his first guitar when he was 13, spent 2 years understanding the guitar and then with Ray Thomas formed a band with the “wonderful” name of El Riot and the Rebels. John’s love of bass playing came from listening to the "riffs" of early rock 'n' roll records and exploring why they added a huge dimension to the rhythm, energy and emotion of music. When he was 16 he bought his “beloved” Fender Precision Sunburst Bass. John played this bass on Nights in White Satin, Singer in a Rock ‘n Roll Band, Isn't Life Strange and most of the songs recorded by the Moody Blues. Growing up in Birmingham he was always fascinated by cars and from an early age wanted to be a car designer. He served an apprenticeship and went to Aston College of Technology, later Aston University, where he achieved a Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering .... John’s love - Cars and Rock and Roll ... After completing his college course he met back up with Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder and joined the Moody Blues in 1966. Since then he has written such classic songs for the Moody Blues as Ride my Seesaw, Isn't Life Strange, I’m Just a Singer in a Rock 'n' Roll Band, Sitting at the Wheel and Steppin' in a Slide Zone. John has been married to his wife, Kirsten, since 1968, and they are the parents of two grown children. Their first child, a daughter named Emily, was born in 1970; Lodge wrote "Emily's Song" for the 1971 Moody Blues album, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. His son Kristian was born two years later. Lodge has spoken on several occasions about his belief as an evangelical Christian, and credits his faith with preventing him from sinking into the dangerous elements of the rock music business.

Ten years ago John began his boutique wine label ‘Krisemma’, with the goal to share his favourite wines from around the world. His first vintage was a red wine from Napa Valley, California, his second a red Bordeaux from France, and his current wine, a South African Elgin Chardonnay has recently won two Trophies in the International Wine Challenge, including Best South African Chardonnay, and Best Elgin Region Chardonnay. The Moody Blues have sold 70 million records worldwide, 15 Platinum Discs and start another tour of the United States in October 2016. John recorded his first solo album Natural Avenue in the 70's and has just released his new highly acclaimed album 10,000 Light Years Ago, with the opening song In My Mind being nominated by Prog Magazine for Rock Anthem of the Year. The Sticks managed to catch up with John during his recent solo tour of the UK Your new album 10,000 Light Years Ago is very different to the Moody Blues stuff? Yes it is and I am so enjoying playing it live, but it is probably an extension of me being with in the Moody Blues, as I like the big dramatic type of songs like Isn't life Strange, Steppin' in a Slide Zone and I’m just a Singer in a Rock 'n' Roll Band. I love all the big anthem type songs and we have loads of them in the Moody’s set and that is what I wanted to do on this album, particularly with the return of vinyl that is what intrigued me, with vinyl at 180 gram you can get full frequency and that was exactly what I wanted to do, I wanted to get the full frequency sound coming off that vinyl. On a day off recently, I was looking round a music store and could not believe that they are starting to make radiograms again. Yes there was this radiogram, brand new with a beautiful turntable and digital radio it was really modern, a great piece of furniture for the house. Tell us a little about the early life and how you got into music I was born in Birches Green, Birmingham. It was a council house development, that was probably built just before the war because I know a bomb landed in the cul de sac near where we lived (not that I was there in those days) and knocked a few of the houses down. It was a very nice place and I grew up there. I went back last year to have a look at the house I was born in, it was quite interesting. I went to a little school called Birches Green Junior which was in a temporary building, the pre fabricated type with wooden rafters and wooden corridors with holes in, where you would drop your dinner money down the hole and never see it again. They were great times but what was good for me particularly, but did not notice at the time, was that every afternoon we used to have a quiet period, where they used to play classical music and sit down for around half an hour.
5
I think some of that must have got in to my psyche somewhere because when I started to understand rock and roll all the harmonies I remember came out and added to the way I write songs. When I was as young as 7 I was fascinated by cars, I think I drove my first car when I was about 10 years of age and I am still fascinated by them, not the engines but the design and the philosophy of them. So when I was about 10-11 years old, I wanted to be a car designer. I was fortunate enough to pass the 11 plus and then I went to Central Grammar School and later to college at the Birmingham College of Advanced Technology for engineering and the world opened up for me and I saw lots of things I would not have seen if I’d stayed in Birches Green. Unfortunately when I left school the car industry was falling apart and cars were being designed in Italy and I saw my career as a car designer disappearing. At the same time when I was 13 I brought my first guitar, an acoustic steel stringed one from a neighbour for £2 10s, I had no idea how to play it and I spent ages trying to work out how a guitar worked. I started off playing basic skiffle chords like Lonnie Donegan and played songs like Freight Train and then I discovered real rock and roll and became a musician - but I carried on at college until I finished the course, but every night and every weekend I would be playing in a band. Sadly I don’t have that guitar but I still have the one I got aged 15 in 1960 and I actually wrote Ride my Seesaw on it, it cost me £18 and that was a lot of money in those days. It was around that that time that I met Ray Thomas; I think we met on a bus to be honest; it was a long time ago and for a strange reason I knew he sang a few songs (but I don’t know why I knew that). We started talking and he said lets form a band together, we found a guitarist an old school friend of mine and we also knew of a drummer who lived by us as well so and we rented a Scout hut and we started rehearsing and that was it then we became El Riot and the Rebels, we used to wear Mexican outfits. We went in to Dunn’s in the centre of Birmingham and brought 5 sombreros, it was great fun. From that group how did the Moody’s get together? I am a bit younger than the other guys and I was still at college, and there was a thing called The Merseybeat and they came to Birmingham and did auditions for Brumbeat and we went along with El Riot and the Rebels and we did not get to the final. Ray said to me “this is ridiculous and I think I want to go to London” but I could not go as I was still at college but at the same time, Mitchells and Butlers, which was the brewery in Birmingham at the time, they were trying to put a band together that would play at their pubs, so they went round asking musicians, they asked Denny Laine, Ray, Mike Pinder and me but I thought I cant do it I have another 18 months at college. Well they put this band together called the M & B 5 taken from the initials of Mitchells and Butlers. Then they decided to drop out of the backing of it for whatever reason, so then the M & B 5 went down to London, dropped the 5 and 6
became The Moody Blues and they recorded “Go Now” which was a big hit. Then about a year later Ray rang me up and asked if I had finished college yet (and of course I had) he told me to get down to London “as we are going to reform the old band, it is still going to be The Moody Blues and I want you to come and be in the band”. So I went down and Denny had left and I met Justin (Hayward). That was June 1966 and that was it, we formed the new band then. The basis was that we were not going to play anyone else’s songs, as we had done that for 5 years, we were going to write and play our own music and that’s what we did. We also got rid of the blue suits that everyone seemed to wear in those days and wore what we wanted on stage. Did you think it would last 50 years? I was so into music, I never even thought about what was going to happen tomorrow. If you plan you get it wrong because you will miss other things that happen for you. Over the years of the MB’s career things have happened you would never think that would ever happen. It is that thing that if your prepared and ready and a door opens up and then you can go for it. Who were your musical influences as you were growing up? They were all left hand boogie piano players because I realised that was the driving force of any rock and roll record, so people like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis. Also I listened to all the riffs of people like Eddie Cochran, that’s what drove me on I thought I have to learn all these riffs, and at the same time a song writer Buddy Holly came along. Buddy Holly was actually my total mentor. Do you still play the keyboards now? I write on keyboards, but I am not very good on the piano. I seemed to be able to see chord formations and harmonics and I can work out riffs, I am not a great keyboard player!!!! So how do you go about writing a new song? There is no set pattern sometimes I write it on the bass guitar, sometimes the piano, other times on the organ or acoustic guitar or electric guitar. The song takes over and it just seems to happen. What comes first the tune or the words? It could be either, like “Isn't Life Strange”, I wrote that song with only one line, which was the title it just repeated and went on and on. With that one I wrote the melody first but “Steppin' in a Slide Zone” came from the lyric. 10,000 Light Years Ago came from a very strange acoustic guitar rhythm. Why is the album called 10,000 Light Years Ago? It was based on the thought processes I had, that the past has gone forever, but the future is always in reach and I had this discussion with an academic and he said it should be called “10,000 Light Years away” and I said “no you have missed the point, if you look up into the sky of a night and you see all those stars up their and we have no idea if they are still there because light has been transmitted such a long time ago also you could never travel to these places as they probably don’t exist anyway and like you see in this record is who I am today and what brought me to this place.

Joe Swift Interview By Brian Donaldson
Gardening has long been a mainstay on British television, and Joe Swift is currently one of the genre’s most popular small screen presenters. He’s fronted the likes of Gardeners’ World, Garden Invaders and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show while he’s also written books such as The Plant Room and Joe’s Urban Garden Handbook. Away from the cameras and covers, he gets involved in community and school gardens, and is an ambassador for the National Gardens Scheme and patron of the Horniman Museum . And now he’s taking his expertise and personality on tour for A Man About The Garden, with live shows which will feature his memories of starting off in landscape gardening in the mid-80s, his rise to become an acclaimed garden designer, and the eventual move into TV. But above all, what will come across is his unconditional love of gardens, whether big or small, commercial or private, contemporary or classic. “It’s been something that’s kept me going and I really love it,” Joe tells me. “I like the people in the industry, I like the fact that you’re always learning, and I love that it’s very creative. And now I write about it, have ended up on TV, and do live tours; I find that they all feed off of each other and improve my garden design. Over the years a lot of funny stories have come up. For the show, I’ll have a lot of slides and visuals, but it’s not an evening lecture about gardening, it’s much more light entertainment. There will be a 10-15 minute Q&A but I will not be talking about dead plants.” So if your perennial has recently passed away into herbaceous heaven and you feel the need to share with someone about your grief, best not make that person Joe Swift. “I think, ‘just dig it up and put something else in and take responsibility: you killed it!’ I want to think more positively and creatively rather than just about keeping a dying plant alive. A lot of these evenings with gardeners tend to be a little like Question Time, and I like to think that my events will still be informative but hopefully just a bit more fun. I think the audience will soon realise that we’re not here to talk about the pH of their soil.” His convoluted route into the gardening world will be familiar to many in his audience no matter their own chosen profession. “I’m the classic art school dropout. I felt a little bit in the lurch so did some travelling and went to spend time on a kibbutz. Friends of mine had been there and hardly spent any money, yet came back looking healthy and tanned; all you had to do was get yourself there.” So, Joe spent six months in Israel, working in the fish ponds, quickly becoming hooked on life in the fresh air. “I just loved working outdoors so when I came back to London with one art A-level to my name, I started working for this landscape 8
gardening company. It was for this guy who was half-actor half-gardener, and I worked beside this hippy gardener called Antonia who was amazing and taught me so much. I started at the bottom, mixing up cement for the landscaping guys and later I went to Australia to landscape in Melbourne and Sydney. I had experience behind me so when I came back to the UK I studied garden design properly.” In some way, Joe Swift’s journey to expressing that deep passion and genuine love for his job on a stage could perhaps be seen as inevitable. After all, he has actors and writers in his family: his dad is Clive Swift who most famously played the brow-beaten husband in BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances while his mother is acclaimed novelist Margaret Drabble. And his late uncle, David Swift, was best known as the badly-behaved news anchor Henry Davenport in Channel 4’s classic 90s satire, Drop the Dead Donkey. So, was a life of writing and performing almost inevitable? “People say that it’s in the blood but I’m not so sure,” reckons Joe. “The funny thing is that I forgot my lines at my primary school’s nativity play. Both my parents went to Cambridge and my brother and sister went to Oxford yet I was an art school drop-out. But yes, I did end up writing and performing; it’s just that I’m so passionate about gardens and gardening that I’ve really just found my thing.” Looking back on his career to date, Joe pinpoints the moment he considers his proudest achievement. “In 2012 I won a gold medal at The Chelsea Flower Show which is the pinnacle of garden design. I’ve been presenting The Chelsea Flower Show since about 2001 so a lot of people associate me with that. I’ll be talking about what it takes to get a gold medal. It’s quite phenomenal really; there’s an incredible amount to be done because your garden has to go up in three weeks, stay up for a week and then back down again in a few days; you have a quarter of a million pound budget and away you go. There’s no room for error and it’s on such a global stage. If you’ve made a crap garden or if you’re in any way embarrassed about it, you’ve nowhere to hide.” While garden design, TV and Joe Swift eventually all found each other, he could well have been performing for a living on a very different kind of stage: the rock ’n’ roll one. “We started off as a teenage band and then kept going after we left school, gigging around a lot of clubs and pubs around north London. We were all convinced, in our own minds at least, that we would be rock stars. It was an early 80s, post-punk thing: we thought we were The Clash. We called ourselves Tumbling Dice after a Rolling Stones song because the Stones were named after a Muddy Waters song. We thought, ‘well that worked for them, so it’s bound to happen for us’. It didn’t.” Joe Swift: A Man About The Garden Saturday 1st October, 7.45pm www.hertfordtheatre.com Hertford Theatre 01992 531500

Dismissed for Having Dirty Hands A recent employment tribunal has ruled that Greggs, the national bakery chain, was right to dismiss a worker for not washing his hands. The employee was an experienced baker who did not wash his hands before returning to the food production area. The employment tribunal stated that Mr Donovan should have appreciated the seriousness of breaching Greggs’ hygiene rules. It ruled that Greggs was right to dismiss him. The tribunal outcome stated: “The claimant accepted that he was aware of the importance placed on hand washing by the respondent, illustrated by the training given to its staff and reinforcement of its importance in the company handbook and in bakery communications. “The claimant also accepted, due to his own experience within the food industry, the importance of hand washing with regard to food safety… “The reasons put forward by the respondent’s witnesses for taking a ‘zerotolerance’ approach are reasonable and sound in a competitive industry where an outbreak of illness traced back to them could have serious consequences in terms of their reputation and success as a business.” Greggs has a zero-tolerance approach to breaches of its hygiene rules. This resulted in the instant dismissal of Mr Donovan who had worked at the company for 11 years. Mr Donovan admitted to not washing his hands before re-entering the food production area. However – his claim for unfair dismissal arose from his belief that his dismissal was too harsh. The tribunal did not agree, stating that Gregg’s decision fell within the range of reasonable responses. It accepted the employer’s principal reason for instant dismissal; that the claimant could no longer be trusted to follow hand-washing rules thereby posing an unacceptable risk to Greggs’ customers and reputation. Mr Donovan’s experience was considered as a potentially mitigating factor. The tribunal ruled that in fact, Greggs was entitled to expect better from such an experienced worker. Comments from Consensus HR: “Rules, policies and procedures are put in place to ensure that everybody within the team knows what is expected of them,” states Matthew from Consensus HR.

“This includes reaching the required legal and operational standards when providing the products that their employer offers. “It can become too common for employees to become blinkered and forget the basics such as personal hygiene. I experienced this during my roles within hospitalities and Welcome Break. “Employees need to understand the reasons why procedures exist. They must remember and apply their training and knowledge. Disregarding the requirements of their role creates issues such as the Greggs’ case to erupt. “Similarly, companies need to ensure that they practice what they preach. I see too many companies that have the right attitude but inconsistent or poor behaviour. Too often I hear the common excuses of: “I did not have enough time”, “I have never been trained how to do it properly” or “The right tools weren’t there” – it simply isn't good enough.” Matthew advises: “All employees and managers should always remember to carry out a task like it is the first time they are doing it. This means completing the task to the correct standard required by law and best practice. This is regardless of the amount of time they have been in the role.” Would you like to know more about disciplinary and grievance procedures? YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS CAN YOU AFFORD TO CHASE BUSINESS DEBTS? The Registry Trust Press Release states that the “number of debt judgments against businesses in England and Wales fell for the seventh consecutive year in the first half of 2016”. In fact it’s now down 19% from the same period last year. This trend is an inevitable consequence of soaring court fees in civil debt claims which many argue is obstructing access to justice. Unfortunately, it’s often small and medium sized businesses that suffer the most because they simply don’t have the resources to start a legal action. Needless to say, it’s more important than ever to make sure you have effective procedures for protecting your business from bad debt. Curwens’ Top Tips: •

Know your customer – make sure you know who you’re doing business with. If they use a trading name, check whether the actual business is a registered company, partnership or a sole trader. Do you have methods of communicating with them, other than an email address and mobile number ? Does your customer have the means to pay? – make use of free services such as the Insolvency Register or Companies House to do regular checks on your customers throughout your business relationship. Be alert to warning signs such as overdue accounts. Contracts – even if you don’t have a written agreement (preferable but not essential), you should make a note at the time of the agreement of exactly what was agreed by each party. It’s also vital that you make sure the person instructing you has authority to do so. Be prepared – if you are considering litigation, you will come to appreciate the importance of good record management. Try to keep copies of any emails or letters and notes of any telephones calls in relation to the disputed matter. If you require any legal assistance, having an organised file and a chronology of events will help save you money on legal fees. Cash Flow – Whenever possible try to get part payment or a deposit upfront or if not, at least make sure the cost is agreed upfront (in a signed agreement is again preferable) and then invoice as soon as the job is finished or at regular intervals if it’s a lengthy project. Payment Terms – if you include standard payment terms within the contract, make sure they are clear, reasonable and consistently applied.

PAULA OSBORNE - TEXTILE ARTIST I have always had a passion for arts from an early age. Best memories of school days were of “cutting and sticking” in infant’s school and drawing and painting throughout juniors. Learning to use a sewing machine during high school opened up a whole new world. Arts and crafts took second place to my career in optics and raising my family of three boys. Now they have all flown the nest I have decided to work part time so that I can explore the arts and craft world once more. For many years of just an enjoyable hobby I am now experimenting what I can do with fabrics, wool, thread, crystals and glass beads. Landscapes dominate my work as the ever changing colours I see from my window inspire me to represent what I see in what I make. Interested in reiki for many years I have also made pictures using crystals sewn into the fabric to represent the chakras. I am always exploring different techniques and experimenting with different materials.
Paula’s work is on display at Mardleybury Gallery which is an eclectic place displaying and selling, original art, limited edition prints, cards, ceramics, sculptures, jewellery, glass, woodwork and photography. They have a permanent gallery exhibiting the art of established artists who live in the UK and more recently we also have artists from other regions around the world. In addition, the Gallery offer a diverse range of art workshops throughout the year, for more information please check out our art workshop page. It may be tempting to take advantage of a last minute sale around the middle of October; don't fall prey to a slick sales pitch. The Full Moon on the 16th could bring about some unexpected expenses. Try not to be overwhelmed by these bills. You can fulfil these obligations if you stick to your budget. As October draws to a close, you will be given a chance to acquire new skills. Money will be tight as October turns to November; be resourceful.
PISCES February 20th - March 20th The New Moon on the 1st could attract an additional source of income. Money from an inheritance, legal settlement or insurance refund will allow you to launch your own business or pursue your dream career. Instead of spending these resources on creature comforts, you will invest them in your own happiness. Friends may not understand this impulse, but don't go all prickly or defensive. Those who love you unconditionally will suspend their judgement and give you their full support. You don't need to maintain relationships with anyone else. The Full Moon on the 16th will attract a sudden windfall. You might have to assume some new responsibilities, but don't let that scare you. Acquiring cutting edge skills will take time and patience, but it can be done with the help of a tutor. Resist the temptation to exaggerate your experience. It's better to admit your ignorance and take a beginner's course. Don't worry about impressing arrogant authority figures.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd - Dec 21st The New Moon on the 1st will be an ideal opportunity to pursue a cherished dream. Your hard work and experience will help you forge the lifestyle you've always wanted. Whether this means setting down roots in a beautiful community or traveling the world for work is immaterial. The important thing is to visualise what you want and start doing things to achieve it. Don't expect your loved ones' approval. Cautious types will warn you not to do anything hasty. They don't share your need for adventure. The Full Moon on the 16th will prompt you to launch a bold creative project. Your charisma will attract lots of romantic attention during the second half of October. If you're single, you could meet someone special at a nightclub, antique shop or environmental organisation. As the month draws to a close, you will be given more responsibility at work. Your diligence and efficiency will result in a big promotion.

The Nice Guys Review by Sonny Etchell From Shane Black, writer and director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Iron Man 3 (2013) comes his latest delve into the neo noir genre, The Nice Guys. Following the apparent suicide of a famous porn star, two private eyes: Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) cross paths to investigate the case in 1970’s Los Angeles. Gosling and Crowe give excellent performances and have surprisingly good chemistry. The ongoing bits of dialogue between the duo, in which they bounce off each other effortlessly with hysterical wit and banter, make for some of the best moments in the film. Gosling in particular is hilarious and his character is the stand-out of the entire film. Angourie Rice is also fantastic as Holly, daughter of Holland (Gosling) and plays a big part in the movie, adding a nice dynamic to the buddycop, crime story. The Nice Guys is technically wonderful. The setting of late 70’s L.A is beautifully captured and recreated to the point that it felt like a movie from that time. The Nice Guys is a hugely original film, a credit to Shane Black’s genius writing and direction. The balance of comedy, violence and heart is created perfectly and the unconventional and unclichéd storytelling is what further proves Shane Black to be a great filmmaker. The Nice Guys was a thoroughly entertaining flic in what has been a somewhat hit or miss year for film. Its hugely original films like this that we need to support if we ever want to see anything other than sequels and reboots.

Hero Cheese of the Month - Picos Blue A smooth, creamy blue cheese made in Northern Spain with a mix of cows and goats milk and wrapped in Maple leaves. Picos Blue is made in the Austrian Mountains of Spain and was traditionally matured in high caves in the cold, damp and salty winds of the Bay of Biscay. The steep and high peaks are one of the most beautiful sites of Spanish geography and were once the barrier which led to the isolation of the geographic region of Leon. Picos de Europa, also known as Valdeon, is a Spanish blue cheese produced in Valdeon Valley of Castile-Leon region. Made all year-round with cow or goat’s milk or a mixture of both, the cheese has very dense blue veining and comes wrapped in maple or chestnut leaves. Since leaf wrapping is no more allowed these days, it comes wrapped in leaf printed aluminium foil. Queso di Valdeon has been awarded a status of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) to regulate the production, processing and preparation of the cheese. In 2005, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food granted the cheese an award for best Blue Veined Spanish Cheese. A bold and salty cheese, Valdeon uniqueness lies in its manufacturing process, which includes long and traditional maturing in the cold, damp cellars until the cheese reaches a mature or medium mature age. The pate of Valdeon has a soft, granular texture and pale yellow colour and is full of small cavities filled with blue moulds. Covered by a coarse, inconsistent rind in dark grey shades with little red marks, Valdeon is very strong and spicy in taste similar to Roquefort. A powerful smelling cheese, Valendon’s greasy, buttery paste is perfect for preparing any kind of blue cheese sauce. The rich smell of the cheese makes good company with fresh fruit and strong red wine or sherry. For more information, contact www.thecheeseplate.co.uk or email directly to toby@thecheeseplate.co.uk

Potato Potatoes are cheap, nutritious and naturally fat free. In my opinion, that makes it the perfect food. A natural source of fibre and contribute to your recommended daily intake of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and B6. Vitamin B6 has several important functions, including contributing to normal red blood cell formation, normal functioning of the nervous system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. So why is it then that over recent years the humble potato has had a bad wrap? Which seems ridiculous considering it is a staple food for most of the world. From mash, baked, jacket, boiled and in salads, it is one food that never disappoints and is almost expected at every meal. Ten interesting Potato facts 1. Potatoes were first eaten more than 6,000 years ago by indigenous people living in the Andes mountains of Peru. 2. The Incas measured time by how long it took for potatoes to cook. 3. Religious leaders denounced the potato because it wasn’t mentioned in the Bible. 4. Potatoes are the world’s fourth food staple – after wheat, corn and rice. 5. Potatoes are grown in more than 125 countries 6. Every year enough potatoes are grown worldwide to cover a four-lane motorway circling the world six times. 7. China is the world’s largest potato producer. 8. Namibians each eat an average of 110 kilograms of potatoes every year – not quite as much as the Germans consume. 9. In 1778 Prussia and Austria fought the Potato War in which each side tried to starve the other by consuming their potato crop. 10. During the Alaskan Klondike gold rush of the 1890’s, potatoes were so valued for their vitamin C content that miners traded them for gold.
