Exclusive interview with Simon Dolan The story of Simon Dolan’s rise to fortune is a quirky one and he’s certainly not your typical millionaire businessman – 41 years old, the world’s first ‘Twitter Dragon’, a champion kick-boxer and racing car driver and a placement on The Sunday Times Rich List 2010). He was thrown out of school at 16. He had virtually no qualifications, limited prospects and fewer ideas. Selling cheese and eggs on a market stool after leaving college taught him the gift-of-the-gab, strong arithmetic and a commitment to hard graft. On the dole, directionless and desperate, he capitalized on his penchant for numbers and started a simple business handling accounts and tax returns for small, local businesses. After some trouble with the police and a self-confessed “messing around” period, he worked hard to grow his business. 17 years later, at the age of 41, he now spearheads a number of assets in the finance industry turning over £100 million. He owns SJD Accountancy, Easy Accountancy and Contractor Umbrella, and established himself as the world’s first Twitter Dragon, where he gave away £5 million of his own capital to aspiring entrepreneurs who could wow him with a 140character business pitch via Twitter. He has already invested in Rachel Lowe’s (who found fame on Dragon’s Den) forthcoming lifestyle company called She Who Dares, the world’s first mental health glossy, Uncovered magazine, and an airline called Jota Aviation. With a business empire spanning financial services, aviation, publishing and motor racing, Simon is living proof that with a sizeable amount of determination and a big idea, we all have the power to be the person who has everything! He races some of the fastest cars in the world, is a champion kick boxer, married to a beautiful wife, has two doting kids, a £4 million home in one of Britain’s richest areas, a fleet of planes and a placement in The Sunday Times Rich List 2010! Simon and his team, Jota Sport, also raced in a factorybacked GT2 Aston Martin in 2011’s 24 Hours of Le Mans as the only privateer Aston Martin race team in the GTE Pro category, with more exciting racing to come. Simon Dolan's entrepreneurial tendencies were realised early and has seen Simon taking on countless jobs picking up valuable 'life lessons' along the way. But one thing has always been present: determination. Throughout his new book 'How To Make Millions Without A Degree' you will see how Simon Dolan has always worked hard and how he identified a niche market that allowed him to start the SJD Accountancy business.

What sets you aside for other entrepreneurs? Well that’s a hard question I guess it is the way I do business, how successfully I do it and the qualities of the businesses I am involved in and sheer determination. My motto is “Luck is preparation multiplied by opportunity" It is well documented you left school with no qualifications it must had been hard to overcome it? Well that’s true, I had no qualifications and very little prospects, but you can always find ways round that, you can set up websites and make you look a big organisation than you really are. When I started out I never really thought or worried about it especially when meeting prospective new clients.

-4-

You have invested in uncovered magazine why? Well I thought Charlotte Fantelli (whose idea it was) very talented and with it being the first mental health magazine in the UK it was a great niche product You also run “Contractor Umbrella tell us a bit about it. Contractor Umbrella is the largest network of specialist contractor service provider companies in the UK. We work with over 12,000 contractors and 98% would recommend us to friends and colleagues. What are your future investment plans? I have no plans at the moment but I have said that before so, never say never! Is there anything you would have done differently? Yes well, for a start I would had kept a closer eye on SJD accountancy, also I would weigh up the positives and negatives more but hindsight is a wonderful thing. How did it go in this year’s Le Mans? It was great up till around 20 hours in. We were in 10th place, with my co drivers Sam Hancock & Franck Mailleux when the Zytek Z11SN car developed a fault on the toe link of the suspension and I crashed backwards in to a wall at over 200 miles per hour. Thankfully we were not hurt.

Detailing Dolan's early life, from selling cheese and eggs, a photocopier salesman, to actually building the foundations for the multi-million pound SJD Accountancy, 'How to Make Millions Without a Degree' gives you the confidence and understanding to start your own empire. Simon Dolan is a serial entrepreneur and looks into what an entrepreneur is, tips on how to run your business and gives an insight as to how he made his pennies into millions. 'How to Make Millions Without a Degree' also details how other entrepreneurs like Simon have made it without a degree. Richard Branson, Sir Philip Green, Stephen Marks and more prove that becoming a millionaire is achievable, even without a degree.

Interview with three times Grammy Award, two time American Music Award winner …. “RICHARD STREET lead singer of THE TEMPTATIONS ‘71-’93”

Born and raised in Motor City, Detroit, Richard Street began his musical career at the tender age of 12, playing piano and singing with his mother's encouragement and support. Since then he has been a professional entertainer for over 47 years. Well known as an incredible vocalist, in the early days of Motown Richard lent his tenor to sweeten vocal tracks, but stayed away from the public eye. This placed him in the unique setting of being the voice behind many of the leads in The Temptations; although, no one saw him in the group. He was on the microphone in the wings as the vocalist on stage lip-synched to his vocals, frequently receiving a standing ovation. In 1971, through the orchestration of God's hand, Richard assumed his rightful place with The Temptations as a full time member. The group undertook a notable shift in direction and within a few years The Temptations were tracking topical subjects such as the Vietnam War and urban poverty. Richard delighted television, stage, radio and record-buying audiences with his leads on songs like "Heavenly", "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Firefly", "Hey Girl", "Masterpiece", "Every Time I Close My Eyes", "I'll Keep My Light In My Window”,” Super Star", "Show Me Your Love", "Bare Back”, ”Standing on the Top", "Love Comes At Christmas", from the Christmas album "Everything for Christmas", "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", and many more. Among the awards Richard has received are three Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and an NAACP Award. He was also there when The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. For over 22 years as a member of The Temptations Richard performed hundreds of shows and, along with other members past and present, they visited over 40 countries worldwide. A lot of worthwhile experience gained from living in the music business has given him the opportunity to reflect on his unique career in his upcoming book "Ball of Confusion", in which Richard chronicles his years with the group. Richard also continues to perform in his own show that includes the legendary music of the Temptations along with other classic hit songs that document the golden years.

-6-

Now, with all but one of the original members of the Temptations having passed on, Richard presents the music of The Temptations in its original 5 man group format with a group line-up consisting of Lawrence Jones (originally from Detroit now resident in Las Vegas), together with current Detroit native Eddie Watkins, Larry Johnson and Bob Henley III. Presenting all of The Temptations best-loved hits, Richard and his group are a “must see” musical journey in time … the way it used to be!

So why are you touring the UK? I’ve not toured Europe or the UK for a while and thought it would be great to do it one last time Where is home for you now? I have lived in Las Vegas since 1970 What have you been doing recording wise recently? I have been recording a new album of the classic songs with a new twist; this is due out at the end of 2012 also I am writing a book about my life which has been keeping me real busy Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? No, I have exceeded everything I ever dreamed of; I have travelled the world and helped others - what more can a man want? What is your favourite food? I love good food especially Chinese but when I am touring I try to eat healthily and drink loads of water What sort of music do you listen to at home? I love old school music from the 50’s and 60’s Who was the last person you saw live in concert? Saw Gladys Knight the other week she was brilliant, but I would say that as we were High school sweethearts What are your favourite songs? “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and “My Girl “ What would you like to be remembered for? Being a good human being, helping people, bringing happiness to others and being a good grandfather to my 6 grandchildren

You can see Richard and the Temptations live on Sunday 16th September at Stevenage Leisure Centre Thursday 20th September at The Stables, Wavendon Thursday 4th October at St Albans Arena

MEET ARTIST SARAH GRAHAM

2012 has been an amazing year for local artist Sarah Graham. When she was commissioned to create the art work for Kaiser Chiefs new album “Souvenir” it offered her some of the exposure she deserved. Since graduating in 2000 with a BA (Hons.) in fine art Sarah had been looking for the big break. Losing her dad in 2004 brought her back to her hometown of Hitchin where for 4 years she painted in her old bedroom at her parents till in 2008 she moved to the studio she has now The Sticks recently visited Sarah there for a chat

When did you first get into art? As a child at school I was obsessed to create When did you discover you had a talent? When I was a young toddler, it helped that I was given some oil paints when I was 8 years old What mediums do you use? Mostly oil on canvas What is your favourite subject matter? Toys and sweets are what Iam well known for, I sell works in USA, Far East and Australia The Kaiser Chiefs new album artwork is amazing how did it come about? Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser’s sent me an email in the spring of 2008 about producing an album cover. It was potentially huge for me, as I'd only just had my first piece of work published. But after that first email I didn't hear back from him, and I was really disappointed.

- 10 -

Six months after the album came out, Ricky came into the gallery where my work was showing, got hold of my contact details and arranged to meet in a pub in Leeds – I think he felt guilty. He's a visual person with a quirky style. I had the album with me at the time and I said, "Sign this for me, please–" And he said, "What do you think of it?" All I could think was that it could have been my work on there. It turns out it was his design. We got on really well, though, and he began inviting me to loads of gigs. He'd take me backstage and big me up to people. He was like, "this is Sarah Graham and I've got to get her work out there." It only took him four years! Anyone else you would like to do work for? Rufus WainwrSight. I have seen him live a few times and enjoy his music Any unfulfilled ambitions in the art world? I would love to have a major exhibition of originals What do you enjoy doing away from art? Gardening as it empties the mind, also I love going to gigs What are your future plans? I am going to auction the original of the album in a gallery in London in aid of the Garden House Hospice in February 2013 What are your ambitions in life? Just to keep living my life to the fullest Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Developing as an artist and creating bigger and better artworks, making painting less elitist and making it accessible so adult and children can paint

INTERVIEW WITH TONY STOCKWELL

Tony Stockwell is a British author, television personality and psychic medium. Stockwell was born on London's East End. His career as a medium began at the age of 16 when he was invited to a local Spiritualist church by a friend to see another medium at work. After this experience, Tony decided that he wanted to become a medium. In his early years he demonstrated mediumship at the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain. Stockwell has worked extensively in the media and has had three of his own television series: The Psychic Detective, Street Psychic, and Psychic School. He has also had two one-off specials: Street Psychic San Francisco and The National ESP Challenge. He has regularly appeared as a guest on 6ixth Sense with Colin Fry. In addition to his tours and media appearances, Stockwell has written four books about his experiences as a Spiritualist medium, and released four audio CDs on communication with spirits, angels, and spirit guides. He also runs a training school for aspiring mediums. What makes you want to perform to people who have lost loved ones? It was never a case of wanting to perform; it was certainly never my need to work in theatres or television as I am actually quite shy. I wanted to communicate with Spirit and the rest took its own path. How would you convince people who do not believe what you are saying is true? I don’t try to convince people; I let them make up their own minds. The evidence will convince them although some people are never going to believe no matter what names, addresses and inside leg measurement you offer! All I would say is to allow people that do believe in an afterlife and mediumship to have that belief if they choose to, it’s their right to have their own faith as much as it’s others right to be sceptical. Most sceptics seem to think believers are gullible, needy and desperate, but in my opinion that’s absolutely not the case. Most people are pretty smart and have come to an educated and researched opinion. Most people I demonstrate for are quite demanding and nothing other than proof is sufficient, and rightfully so. What has been your most memorable experience whilst performing throughout the years? Most memorable moments often come from every day things and not always massive or life changing events. Sometimes it’s just the people you meet and how you can touch each other’s lives. However, demonstrating at the London Palladium with its rich history was not to be sniffed at, as was recording my first television series and nothing compares to the day you receive the finished copy of your first book. One thing that really sticks in my mind is when I was giving a private reading to an American in London. After bringing through evidence from his relatives I found myself passing on a message from Lucille Ball!! This was just incredible, especially as I am such a huge fan. He confirmed they had been great friends in life so it was only natural that she would have wanted to be part of the reading. He took it in his stride, but I just kept thinking, OMG, I am communicating with Lucille Ball! Another important moment was working on the case of murdered London model Sally-Anne Bowman. I read for the family prior to the arrest of the person responsible and so much detail came through which assisted the police with their enquiries. Linda, Sally’s mum was of course absolutely distraught and desperate for answers so I became very emotionally invested in the case and wanted to do my best for them. How old were you when you first had an encounter with Spirit and how did you find out that you were a Medium? Well the two are very different. I had encounters with spirit all the time when I was growing up, as early as 3 years old. It was much later when I went to my first Spiritualist Church that I started to understand my experiences and what that could mean and where they came from. I was invited into a development group and it really went from there.

- 14 -

Why did you start Spiritual Holidays and what can people expect? It was just something that we had been talking about for some time and a project that excited us both. There are so many fantastic places around the globe to visit, but you can’t always marry that in with investigating and appreciating the spiritual side of that place. I have been running development seminars for a number of years and this is just a progression of that, but instead of working on just mediumship we focus on spiritual development and what these places have to offer us and the amazing experiences you can have there. Our first event was a Nile Cruise in 2010 and we couldn’t have hoped for more. Those people that joined us bought such an incredible amount of enthusiasm and passion with them and I know for many it was a ‘holiday of a lifetime’. With a mix of tourist sightseeing, classes and holiday fun it really was a holiday with a difference. We also wanted to make it appealing for the lone traveller too, as we appreciate that often partners do not always share the enthusiasm for all things spiritual. Each event is structured in such a way with the classes and pre-arranged excursions so people needn’t worry about coming alone, or with a friend and not their partner. I can honestly say that this was one of the most pleasurable experiences related to my work that I have ever had. Sharing this special time with such great people, being part of their experiences and really coming together as a group was just magical. How does the weekend usually start for you – Friday night? Weekends and weekdays just merge into each other while I'm on Tour so there is no such thing as a usual Friday night. An ideal Friday night could be a few bottles of New Zealand sauvignon and a Thai takeaway at home without packing cases. It could also be demonstrating to a sell-out audience giving such specific messages that leave no doubt of the existence of the Spirit World. I'm just passionate about my work (sometimes I think I have a better time on stage than the audience .....Although I hope I'm wrong!) and I love to know that a message from someone's loved one in spirit can have a life changing effect. What do you tend to get up to on Saturday and Sunday if at home? I love to walk the dogs and our new house is just a stone's throw from some great countryside which I'm looking forward to exploring with the dogs. Essex has such a bad reputation and although we can't compete with the Lake or Peak Districts or the Cotswolds, we still have some picturesque views and diverse architecture. What is your favourite food? Buttery mashed potato and loads of it. Do you cook? What is your signature dish? I love to cook but I'm from the throw everything into a pan school of cooking. I have a house in Gran Canaria and I love to shop in the markets for fresh vegetables to make huge vats of soup. I know it's the wrong thing to be eating in a hot climate but I try to make up for my lack of ' 5 a day' when on Tour. If you order a takeaway what will it be? Thai, but nothing too garlicky as I'm conscious that I could be greeting people and signing autographs.

You can see Tony live on Saturday 22nd September at Harpenden Public Halls. Box office 01582 767525 Wednesday 26th September at Harlow Playhouse. Box office 01279 431945

IS YOUR JOB SAFE? When times are hard and finances are tight, one of the first things an employer looks at is the wage bill. You can then find yourself receiving a redundancy notice and getting involved in the consultation process where in effect you have to prove yourself more useful to the company than other your colleagues. Your employer is under a duty to make this process open, honest and fair. The problem comes when, like now, there are ongoing economic problems. Your employer may be under pressure to act quickly, and may only be a small firm, but you still have a right to be consulted. I There is a set, minimum amount payable for redundancy depending on your age and length of service. There is an online calculator at www.direct.gov.uk/redundancy.dsb but the main points are: • You must have worked for your employer for 2 complete years to qualify for a redundancy payment • Whilst you are aged 22 and over, but under 41 you will receive one week’s salary for each complete year of service • Your weekly salary is capped to a maximum amount – currently £430 • You can only claim for a maximum of 20 years’ service • Whilst aged under 22 you only receive ½ a week’s salary for every complete year of service • Whilst aged 41 and over you will receive 1½ week’s salary for every complete year of service These minimum rates are set by the Government, and usually change slightly each year, but some employers, particularly larger companies offer higher rates. Being made redundant can be extremely traumatic particularly if you have been with an employer for some time but when times are bad, employers to have to make tough decision. If it’s any consolation, from our experience, redundancy isn’t the end of the world and more often than not people soon find a new job, or use the opportunity to do something new – like start their own business. So if it is happening to you, do bear that in mind. At Curwens, we are always happy to have an initial chat with you on the telephone so just give Teresa a ring on 0208 363 4444 or check out our website at www.curwens.co.uk Curwens LLP is your local firm of solicitors offering most areas of legal advice – based in Royston, Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Enfield.

Food Ideas from Pearce’s Farmshop & Café In our new monthly food column, Dan Brinklow, head chef at Pearce’s Café on the A10 will be making the most of the fresh and seasonal British produce. Highlighting some of his favourite ingredients, he will also share ideas and tips for trying some of our more unusual produce and inspire creative cooking. September is a cracking month with its crisp bright mornings but still with the summer heat during the day. It is a month of plenty in the culinary calendar and the farm shops and greengrocers are overflowing with quality and quantity. Glossy green courgettes, fat tomatoes, rocket, peppers, chillies and aubergine are all in abundance and perfect for vegetable dishes that pack a great punch. Grab the last of the soft fruits, autumn raspberries, the juicy plums, greengages and cook up one more batch of jam. Make the most of the glut with chutneys and pickles and preserve this wonderful harvest for the deep mid-winter. For me too, there’s the fun to be had foraging in the wild and in the hedgerows for blackberries, bullace which is a variety of plum and elderberries that are perfect for making jellies. Also, if you are lucky, hazelnuts which are quite delicious while they are still green with a crispy crunch flesh and sweet vegetably taste, so different from the brown-shelled nut you find at Christmas. In the farm shops you’ll find them as cobnuts, the name given to the cultivated form that are bigger than the wild hazels but as long as they are fresh – the leafy frill on the nut casing shouldn’t be too brown and dry – they are well worth seeking out. Shelled and chopped they are used in savoury dishes including soups and sauces and stir fried they go well with greens. They are excellent in baking and can be ground for use in cakes and biscuits as well as puddings, add to meringue for a tasty pavlova or to the crumble mix for fruit crumbles. As with most nuts they have a special affinity with chocolate and are a key ingredient in praline. Fennel is a wonderfully versatile vegetable with a distinct anise or liquorice flavour and the common variety can also be found in the wild - collect the seeds and add to breads, pickles and charcuteries. The sweet variety or Florence fennel is a fat fleshy bulb and when thinly sliced and eaten raw is super crisp and refreshing with a little shaved parmesan in a salad, but slowly cooked it melts into a wonderful savoury caramel sweetness. For a delicious gratin, slice the bulbs, fry gently in a little oil until they colour and become tender, place in a buttered gratin dish and sprinkle over parmesan and breadcrumbs and bake in a hot oven until golden and crisp. Simply roast them with other vegetables and serve as a perfect foil for rich meats or fish; they go particularly well with the oily mackerel and sardines. Soften in butter and add to a bowl of cooked pasta with fennel seeds and chillies or add to a tart with cheese for an elegant lunch. To help with any glut of beans and plums you might like to try this fritter recipe, it also makes a delicious snack and the tarte tatin makes the most of our wonderful Victoria plums - serve with a cold ice cream – delicious! Pesto Risotto with Runner Bean Fritters and Ricotta -Serves 4 Ingredients For the Pesto 2 bunch basil 100g pine nuts 1 clove garlic half a lemon, juiced olive oil grated parmesan

- 18 -

For the Risotto 400g aborio rice 1 pint hot vegetable stock 50g butter 2 shallots finely chopped For the Runner Bean Fritters 8 runner beans cut into long strips 200g self raising flour sparkling water 250 g ricotta to serve Method For the Pesto Place all the pesto ingredients in a food processor, blend while adding a thin stream of the oil (needs to be the consistency of wet hummus), season and place to one side. For the Risotto Sweat the shallots with the butter until transparent, add the rice and cook for 2-3 minutes stirring all the time. Keeping the heat low, start adding ladlefuls of the hot stock slowly, stirring all the time until each ladle has been absorbed by the rice (should take 13-15 minutes). Taste the rice to check if it is cooked. If not, carry on adding the stock until the rice is soft. If you run out of stock before the rice is cooked, add some boiling water. Rest the risotto for 5 minutes. For the Fritters Mix the flour with the sparkling water until it resembles thick double cream consistency, season. Toss the runner beans in the batter and fry for 4-6 minutes until golden. Drain on kitchen paper. To serve, add the pesto to the risotto and correct the seasoning, stack the beans on top, then drop small spoonfuls of ricotta over the top.

Health Editorial Louise North and Patrick Pearce will be celebrating the first anniversary of the Osteopathic Centre in Welwyn Garden City this September. Twelve months ago they combined their 14 years of experience to establish a clinic in central Hertfordshire providing excellent osteopathic healthcare for those suffering from musculo-skeletal ailments. Both osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council and therefore adhere to strict professional standards and code of conduct. They both grew up in Digswell and Welwyn Garden City, but met in London at The British School of Osteopathy during their four year undergraduate degree. Louise later completed a master’s degree in paediatric and cranial osteopathy specialising in the treatment of pregnancy and babies and small children. Patrick specialises in sports injuries with a wealth of experience during his time as an elite athlete over the past decade. It is often thought that osteopaths only treat low backs or bones; however Osteopathy can be used to treat a wide variety of problems. Admittedly, lower back pain is the most common presentation to clinic, as not surprisingly it is second to the common cold for patients presenting to their GPs, taking up 7 million consultations annually. Some of the conditions osteopathy can treat includes: Low back pain, Sciatica, Osteoarthritis of the hip, knee and spine, Sports injuries, Cranial osteopathy for babies and small children, Muscle spasm, Whiplash associated disorders, Headaches related to a muscular origin, Pain during pregnancy, Neck and shoulder pain What happens when you see an osteopath? At your initial consultation your osteopath will take a full case history relating to your current symptoms and general health. They will also perform a physical assessment to allow them to formulate a working diagnosis and treat you accordingly. Although this may seem unnecessary at times it ensures that all patients are treated safely and any possible underlying health problems are not over looked. The physical assessment usually requires patients to undress to their underwear although practitioners are more than happy for people to wear shorts or a top if they feel more comfortable. The assessment itself allows us to check whether your spine and muscles are moving properly and whether treatment is indicated. If we feel you need further tests or investigations, we will ask for your consent to write to your GP for this to be arranged. Osteopaths use their sense of touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood supply and nerve function to tissues and to help your own body's healing mechanisms. Osteopathy is a safe approach to healthcare and can be beneficial for the whole family from the elderly, pregnant mum, office worker, sportsmen and for babies and small children. Osteopathy is a fantastic way of helping the body return to a normal and well functioning state whether that be for an acute pain you have had for a week after waking up and feeling a crick in your neck, to a back pain you have had for 3 months and been ignoring but hasn’t gone away, or a niggling pull in your Achilles and calf when running. With Osteopathy small changes can make big results. If you would like any further information please visit www.welwyn-osteopaths.co.uk Alternatively, please contact Louise or Patrick by telephone on 01707 327135 or by email enquiries@welwyn-osteopaths.co.uk should you have any queries.

Sponsor(s) Wanted! Help a Paralympic wheelchair fencer go to the World Cup in Hong Kong

14 year old Paralympic fencer Gabi Down from Milton Keynes is looking for a sponsor or sponsors to help her take part in the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup 2012 in Hong Kong from 12th – 16th December. She is currently ranked number one in the UK female fencing ratings for both foil and epee and it would be a shame for her not to take part, but her current sponsor is not able to pay the £2000 cost for her to attend and compete. This amount could be shared between two or more sponsors. Gabi will wear a shirt with your logo on with an additional logo on her wheelchair. Look after your tootsies!

You’ve heard of Reflexology – yep, where someone fiddles with your feet, but for the uninitiated it is SO much more than that. During each of my four pregnancies I swore by my regular Reflexology sessions to keep me well, but after pregnancy along with most other women, the pampering just dropped off. We simply don’t take as much care of ourselves as we should. Recently feeling on the edge of serious burnout I decided to treat myself to some much needed TLC. At the Kings Langley Wellbeing Festival at the Rudolph Steiner school I was introduced to Miriam Kimchi who runs Equilibrium for Health and was attracted to the fact that she is a practitioner who really looks at the holistic picture. In addition to reflexology she offers kinesiology too (more on that later) but for my first session it was just my feet that got the attention - except that as Miriam says ‘Reflexologists don't isolate a disease or treat it sympathetically, nor even do they work on a particular organ, they look at the whole person in order to induce a state of balance and harmony. Holistic health addresses the whole person and their lifestyle. It focuses on prevention and health maintenance, treating the individual rather than the preventing symptoms.’ Oh and it’s not just for women either, Miriam treats lots of men who seem rather sceptical at first until they experience the treatment and benefit from its therapeutic effects. Miriam's treatment takes place in The Stables, a lovely little brick built premises just off the high St in Hemel Hempstead. Unusually there is a parking space for clients so that relieves the stress of finding space in local car parks. After taking a brief health history and offering me a glass of water Miriam settled me onto a reclining chair and covered me with a lovely soft blanket, she moisturised my feet and then seemed to literally ‘read’ them in the style of a fortune teller. But this was no charlatan at work; she is extremely intuitive and clearly has healing hands. She immediately saw just from my feet that I am quite hormonal at the moment and feeling exhausted. Reflexology doesn't hurt although the occasional spot can be a little tender, it can feel extremely relaxing, in fact I'm convinced I dozed off at one point. Clearly that was what my body needed. ‘If you were my child’ Miriam said rather sternly as she completed the treatment, ‘ I would tell you off, every area is sensitive , you are not giving your body the attention it deserves’ Duly reprimanded I vowed to try harder and book myself for regular massages or therapeutic treatments ( Miriam's colleague offers Bamboo massage ( now that sounds interesting !) After Reflexology you are advised to drink lots of water, avoid alcohol and get plenty of rest, in fact I had a fantastic night’s sleep; it really felt as though the treatment had a balancing effect. Don't get confused into thinking at Reflexology is merely stroking the feet, in the hands of the right Therapist it can help to revitalise body functions, calm your nerves, and stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation. It can aid elimination of toxins, balances high and low blood pressure and can energise your mind body and spirit.

I'm booking myself in for a course of six, I will back when I'm thoroughly chilled!!

Win a Meal for Four at Brookmans, Brookmans Park Brookmans is an imposing presence at the heart of Brookmans Park, one of the original garden villages created in rural Hertfordshire. It’s set inside a fabulous 1930’s building now beautifully restored to recreate a slice of urban life in the country. Behind its grand, neo-Georgian front lies a welcoming island bar where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee, a decent pint of beer or a glass of chilled champagne. Whether you want to see or be seen at the bar, settle into a cosy corner or throw a fantastic party in one of the two stunning private dining rooms, you’ll find Brookmans has it all.

There’s a great atmosphere in the eatery.

It’s warm and welcoming with its British Racing Green

upholstery and hand-made silk lampshades. The soft cream walls towering above are hung with historic posters from the Metroland era when Brooklands Park was built, part of the hugely optimistic garden suburb movement. Try something from the tasty seasonal menu and watch while the chefs make it freshly for you – there’s a bird’s eye view into the kitchen from here. Right now, there’s a great choice of seasonal starters, mains and desserts on offer, whether you enjoy more traditional dishes or something that’s a bit different. You can start your meal with a lovely Cornish crab cocktail, guacamole and tacos or have crispy halloumi, marinated grilled courgette and apricot salad with a zingy orange sauce. For mains try the free-range chicken schnitzel and rocket and Parmesan salad and sun blushed tomato tapenade or the chilli and lime-spiked salmon fishcake with summer leaves, coriander and lime mayonnaise. If you want to push the boat out, have the 28 day-aged Casterbridge 24oz rump steak on the bone to share, with chips, beer battered onion rings, watercress, Béarnaise sauce and garlic butter, wonderful. There’s also a superb selection of summery puds to choose from including lemon posset, fresh raspberries and shortbread and summer fruit frangipane tart and Chantilly cream. The pub does a daily-changing roast as well as Sunday roasts all day on Sunday.

The eatery is the heart of the pub but there are plenty of other spots to sit back and enjoy the good stuff, whether you come for brunch, a leisurely supper or just a pint of Brentwood Best. On sunny days the cheery terrace out front is perfect for watching the world go by and inside there are comfy armchairs sporting original 1930’s holly green and poppy red moquette to sink into. Throw your party with us and we’ll bring a touch of glamour to the proceedings. The Garden Room is a rich cocoon of dark wood contrasting with bold red leather booths and quirky bottle green lighting whilst the Green Room is more

Kia Rio 1.4 CRDi 3 EcoDynamics Category: Fuel:

3-dr Supermini 70.6mpg

P11D Price: CO2:

£14,295 105g/km

There’s a choice of two diesels, a 1.1-litre and a 1.4, and two petrols, a 1.25 and a 1.4. We drove the 1.4 diesel which has long gearing that blunts flexibility and means only adequate performance is on offer up to cruising speed. The diesel requires too many revs to really get going, making it hesitant around town. The Rio’s suspension has a firm edge and struggles with bumps and potholes, so the ride never feels totally settled. The Rio is far from being as sporty or agile as a Ford Fiesta, but it’s assured at speed: body control, grip and the feelings of safety and stability are better than in most superminis. The pitfall is its steering, which is curiously weighted and numb. At tickover, there’s too much noise and vibration. At higher speeds, the racket from the engine is joined by the sound of the tyres slapping on the road, and the gearshift is notchy too. It’s a shame, because wind noise is well contained. This is one of the cheaper cars in its class, but the gap between it and its rivals isn’t as big as you might anticipate. Still, there’s also the persuasive argument of the company’s standard seven-year, transferable warranty. The Rio’s fit and finish is very good, although the materials aren’t quite up to Volkswagen standards yet. Kia has been climbing steadily up the ranks in the last few JD Power customer satisfaction surveys, and the previous Rio was rated as average for mechanical reliability in the 2012 study. The Rio has earned a fivestar NCAP crash-test rating, and that’s no surprise when it comes with six airbags and stability control as standard across the range. It should also be as thief-proof as other contemporary Kias. This is an easy car to get comfortable in because the driving position is adjustable and should suit everyone. The seats are flat and firm – although some testers found the seats short of lower-back support – and controls are of the simple, well-placed variety. The big problem is that the small rear window and thick pillars restrict rear visibility. This is one of the more spacious ’minis. Up front, there’s plenty of shoulder- and headroom, and the long wheelbase creates plenty of rear legroom for adults. The high boot sill is annoying, but at 288 litres, the boot itself is on a par with anything else in the class, and the 60/40 split seat back allows you to extend luggage space into the cabin if required. The load area is stepped, though. Standard kit includes USB/Aux In sockets and electric front windows, air-conditioning, alloys, front fog lights, electrically operated door mirrors and chrome trim on the grille. Unique to top-spec 3 are daytime running lights, climate control, reversing sensors and cruise control.

A comprehensive road test of the Kia Rio can be found at www.mermormotormedia.com
