Interview with 80’s Icon Paul Young Paul Antony Young was born January 17th, 1956. He was the middle child of three, has an elder brother Mark and a younger sister Joanne. His interest in music dates back to when he was very young, when he learnt to play the piano and then the guitar. On leaving school he worked, as did his father and brother, for Vauxhall Motors and played in various bands at night. He played bass guitar in his first and second band, but always wanted to become the singer. Everyone’s favourite 80’s crooner Paul Young is back on tour, performing his much-loved album ‘No Parlez’ in celebration of 35 years since its release. ‘No Parlez’ was Paul’s debut album. It reached number 1 in the UK charts in 1983 for 5 weeks and fast became triple Platinum. The album produced Paul’s first UK number 1 single – The Marvin Gaye cover of ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat’ and hits ‘Come Back & Stay’ & ‘Love of The Common People’. The album also features a cover of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. Originally in early 80’s band Q-Tips, Paul Young went solo in the 80’s and his career took off with ‘No Parlez’ and further top 10 hits such as ‘Everytime You Go Away’ & ‘Everything Must Change’. He is also a Brit Award winner for Best Male vocalist, sings the opening lines on the original Band Aid Single ‘Feed the World’ and performed at Live Aid in 1984. Paul is a keen chef, biker and fan of all things Mexicana! A family man, always happy to be touring his classic hits as a solo artist or with his Tex Mex/ Americana band ‘Los Pacaminos’ Terry Sullivan caught up with Paul ahead of his tour It is 35 years since you released the album ‘No Parlez’ and to me one of the standout tracks on the album is ‘Come Back & Stay’. Yes, it is a great one, it is kind of a rock song, but it was not when I actually did it, I did not want to get stuck as a balladeer and I love playing ‘Come Back & Stay’ I remember the album coming out and it does not seem 35 years ago, but you were in the music business before. I first heard of you playing with “The
4
Streetband” in the late 1970’s with “Toast” which has been described as rapping. Yes, it was 1976 when I first became a musician and I think the rapping bit is a joke term. It was a novelty song and it was the B side of the first single. How long had you been singing before you joined The Streetband? I had been in a couple of local bands when I was about 16 and I was about 19 or 20 when I joined The Streetband. In December 1979, you went on and formed a band, I remember very well because I am originally from the area, called the “Q Tips” and you had a big hit with the “Letters Song” which was a cover of a Joe Tex song. I have always been a big Joe Tex fan and we did not want to choose a song that had been a big hit already; it had been a minor hit in the UK, so we thought we would choose that one. In fact I actually wrote a song about him called “Get 'em up Joe” which we put back in to the live set - last year, I think. You reformed The Q Tips a few years ago? It was a few years ago it was the early 90’s You now also play with a band called ‘Los Pacaminos’ and it is a very different style from your singing of the 80’s and 90’s. Yes, it is. I listen to anything and everything, people say I am a soul music fan; I am just a music fan - I listen to all sorts of stuff. Ry Cooder had 3 R ‘n B singers - a bass vocalist, a tenor and a guy who could go right up into alto - and then he brought in these Mexican players and it still sounded soulful. I wanted to explore the other side of what made this band so interesting and I started buying music from Mexico and getting it to that, and it was the natural follow on to start “The Pacaminos” which is a hybrid of when the Mexicans cross the border - they either go to Arizona or Texas and there music influences of what was going on in Texas. Over the years since you started sing, do you think your voice has changed and if so in what way? It has changed a lot; I was probably a high baritone back in the 80’s and now I am a low baritone but even then I was singing in like tenor, so everything was above my natural range, and now like Frank Sinatra and Paul Rodgers - their mid-range voice becomes a lot bigger and thicker, a nice warm sound, Jodie Mitchell too, hers changed a lot. It is a natural progression. Do you think your voice is natural now and you’re not having to force it, if that’s the right word? Yes, it is, I can still go up there, I have changed the keys but only a miniscule amount, I still have to push and that creates he sound that I am after. Working with “The Pacaminos” has enabled me to write songs that are in my natural range.
5
Has the style of your performance changed too? Yes, it has a little bit; there was a lot more energy in it when I was 25 now I am 60, I don’t mind admitting it. At lot of people love the 80’s and there are lots of 80’s festivals, why do you think the 80’s has been so enduring? So many of the bands had a different sound, I was talking to someone about this the other day, I have just come back from touring America with Midge Ure. The stuff he did with Ultravox is very different to stuff I did, which sounds nothing like Culture Club and they did not sound like Duran Duran, you’ve got Heaven 17 in a different area and yet all these people had big hits. When you got to a festival there are so many different musical styles. If you put a festival on now with the current groups and you would be hard pushed to tell the difference between one coming off and other one going on. You were part of the famous Band Aid single and Live Aid and you look at the acts that were on that show, Tear for Fears, yourself, Queen, Phil Collins among others, you sang the classic line on the single. How did it happen? I think they had already assigned my part which was in the middle, so everyone came in to do their part. I remember even when I was recording, I wanted to do the first line again and you would go in a do it as it is such an important line and they left and left as they had not decided who they were going to have and right at the 11th hour, almost the last thing we did before everyone filed in to do the chorus, they just contacted me and asked me if I would sing the opening line. Did you get a phone call from Midge (Ure) or Bob (Geldof) asking are you free to do this? Yes, I got a call directly from Bob and I remember I had just moved in to my flat in Highgate which I could not afford and then I had a number 1 record and then I could. It was only a one-bedroom basement flat, I remember him calling me at home, he knew someone, who knew someone who had my number. He explained what was going on - because I was really busy at that point I had not watched a lot of TV, so he told me what was going on in Ethiopia and what he was planning to do, and I said “Yes, sure” You also took part in the Live Aid concert, that must have been an amazing day? Yes, it was an incredible day and the thing I remember about it is that they asked me to do it- and I said yes - but we had very little detail of when, where and what exactly was going on and when they announced the date, it was right at tail-end of my American tour so I asked if I could be on the American stage and it was too late - it had all been worked out so I had to fly back just for Live Aid then I had to fly all the way back as I had a holiday booked there. It was incredible, the amount of people I met and the goodwill that was there from both all the artists and the audience, it is was a landmark.
6
If I said to you tonight you could sing with any band or act, who would you choose and why? I would choose The Faces because they have so much fun on stage and as I have got older that has become the primary objective really, that I want to be able to enjoy myself on stage. There was a lot of inward looking stuff when I was younger, as there are with most kids, but now I think when I get on there - I want to enjoy myself. Is there going to be any new material from Paul Young? Yes, there is but the first chance I have to get at it will be December /January as I am working right up till then, so I would say 2019 before it is out. It will be a solo album but The Pacaminos, are releasing a live album later on this year, we are just sorting out the artwork now along with the track listing etc. hope to have it out in October. The solo album is going to be songs I have written and songs I have covered and given a pop arrangement to and giving them the treatment they deserve. How does the songwriting process work with you? I tend to write with Drew who is in The Pacaminos, but before he was in The Pacaminos I already covered his songs he wrote on my second album and onwards. I like writing with Drew because he will come up with 2 or 3 chords or a couple of lines and then that’s enough to get me started. The hardest part for me is to come up with the initial thought. I put a story around those lines.

The Great Escape……Part 2 Many of you will have read in the national press last year about Mrs. Owens - a woman who says she is “desperately unhappy” in her 39-year marriage and applied to the court for a divorce but was refused. Mrs. Owens told the court her marriage had broken down, but Mr. Owens disagreed and said the couple still had a “few years” to enjoy. The Judge who initially heard the case last year, concluded that Mrs. Owen’s 27 allegations about her husband’s unreasonable behaviour were “of the kind to be expected in marriage” and refused to grant a divorce. Mrs. Owens appealed the decision, and this appeal was heard back in May 2018. However, the outcome has only recently been published. The Judges concluded that whilst the case left them with “uneasy feelings” they were stuck dealing with the case within the current legal framework until there is a change of law by Parliament. They therefore rejected Mrs. Owens appeal and again refused to grant a divorce. Mrs. Owens is therefore effectively being forced to stay in a marriage she does not want to be part of until the Government decide to offer a No-Fault Divorce. At present, anyone issuing divorce proceedings has to blame their spouse for the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage and come up with allegations against them, unless they have been separated for 2 years. This causes animosity in an already tricky situation. Mrs. Owens’ case highlights why divorce law in the UK needs to change and the family solicitors at Curwens have been assisting in the lobbying organised by the national group Resolution to try and get that change. Last week, Baroness ButlerSloss launched a Private Member's Bill committing government to review the current divorce law so watch this space……

Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes September
CANCER (June22nd-July23rd) The New Moon on the 9th will cause some wires to get crossed. If you're giving a set of confusing instructions, ask for clarification. Double check an address before entering it into your GPS. Before setting for an appointment, make sure it is the right date. If a meeting is missed, try not to get upset. The more flexible and laid back you are, the easier it will be to handle the confusing energy of early September. On the 25th, the Full Moon will create stress on the professional front. Someone you look up to and respect will ask for more than can be delivered. The limits of time and space will mean nothing to this deluded leader. Instead of trying to appeal to their logic, make a strategic retreat. Reflect on your options. It might be better to find employment elsewhere. There are few things more stressful than working for an irrational person.
ARIES (March21st-April20th) Beware of taking up an extreme health regime on the 9th. That's when a confusing New Moon will cloud your judgement. If you want to revise your diet or increase physical activity, talk to a doctor. They'll tell you the best way to achieve the results you want. It will take longer than you expect to reach your goal. That's fine. It's better to move towards your dream in slow, steady increments. Alleged miracle cures will put too much pain and strain on your system. The Full Moon on the 25th will tempt you to enjoy some down time, but work won't permit this. You'll have to cancel plans to accommodate a demanding boss. If you've had enough of a thankless job, make a plan to land a better role. Don't quit your current position until you're offered another one. Protect your professional reputation; if you don't, nobody else will.
LEO (July24th-August23rd) TAURUS (April21st-May21st)
A moneymaking offer on the 9th will not be all it is cracked up to be. That's when a deceptive New Moon will tempt you into taking a seemingly cushy job. Once you accept this position, you'll be dismayed to learn you have been duped. It's better to stick with a position you know during the first half of September. The last thing you want is to go to all the trouble of changing jobs, only to discover you've landed in a far worse situation. The Full Moon on the 25th will make it hard for you to spread your wings and fly. You may fail a test or fall short of graduation requirements. If you've applied to university, you might be turned away. Remain philosophical. When one door closes, another always opens. Be willing to explore an avenue that becomes suddenly available to you. Joining a community group will be good for you on many levels at the end of September.
The New Moon on the 9th will make you impulsive. Beware of rushing a romantic relationship. Diving head first into a commitment will be cause for serious regret. You're dealing with someone who has a hidden side that is quite upsetting. Keep things at the casual stage. Try to see how their words match their actions. This will tell you everything you need to know about their character. If you're trying to find help for a child, it will take several attempts before finding the right situation for their particular needs. Be patient and don't put too much stock in fancy diplomas. On the 25th, the Full Moon will bring an embarrassing secret to light. You may discover someone has been cheating you out of a joint fund. On the other hand, you will experience betrayal in a close relationship. Stay strong and breathe deep. Loyal friends will help you through this difficult passage.
VIRGO (August24th-September23rd) GEMINI (May22nd-June21st)
Your self-confidence will be undermined by a confusing New Moon on the 9th. No matter how clearly you try to communicate your points, the audience will fail to understand them. Don't get upset. Take deep breaths and try another approach. You have a tendency to get bogged down in insignificant detail. Instead of overwhelming people with too much information, just give them a basic overview of the material. You might have to explain concepts you thought were universally understood. When in doubt, move slowly forward towards your goal. On the 25th, the Full Moon will create a rift in a close relationship. An argument over money and shared resources will cause you to reconsider this relationship. Financial security has always been critical to your wellbeing. You can't be with someone who squanders money on expensive luxuries. Having good physical chemistry is nice, but it won't sustain a lifetime union.
Finding a place to live will be challenging during the first half of September. You may feel pressured to sign a lease or make a deposit on the 9th, due to a deceptive New Moon. Do not move forward on this deal until you have the property inspected by someone that you hire. They'll point out any troublesome or expensive pitfalls. If you're dealing with a troublesome family situation at this time, notify your employer. When they understand what you're dealing with, they'll stop having unrealistic expectations of you. The Full Moon on the 25th will send shock waves through your social circle. A bad breakup will cause someone to leave your midst. Don't buy into one person's version of events. This is a complicated matter with deception on both sides. You never know what happens with a couple once they go home and shut the door.
10
exhausting fight. Sometimes protecting your resources is more important than prevailing in court. If you're thrust into an unfamiliar environment and feel like you're out of your depth, ask for additional training. It's better to admit your ignorance than pretend to know what you're doing. The Full Moon on the 25th creates drama on the home front. Trying to push a relative into an arrangement they don't like will cause great resentment. It's better to sit down together and strike a compromise. By listening carefully to your family member's concerns, you'll become much more compassionate. The key to any successful relationship is showing respect for each other's feelings.
LIBRA (September24th-October23rd) A rival will take credit for your hard work in early September. Don't let the deceptive New Moon on the 9th cause you to let down your guard. If you submit work, do it to several people via email. That way, people will know when it was submitted and who generated it. If you're offered a job, don't leave your current one until you get a signed document from your employer. Circumstances will change quickly during the first half of the month. What seems like a sealed deal could vanish into thin air. The Full Moon on the 25th will cause you to question a close partnership. A meddling relative will fill your head with doubt and fear. If you have any questions about a partner's loyalty, talk to them. Establish a healthier boundary between your family and romantic lives. If your amour is being attacked by your kin, stand in your partner's defence.
AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th) An intimate relationship gets off to a rocky start in early September. The New Moon on the 9th causes people to be distrustful, elusive and deceptive. If you catch someone near and dear to you in a lie, it's a red flag. You're not a judgmental person. Learning something disturbing about someone's past doesn't bother you when it comes from the horse's mouth. If you hear it through other channels, it's cause for concern. You do not want to get involved with a habitual liar. On the 25th, the Full Moon brings upsetting information to light. Decisions will be taken affecting your world of work. It could mean that there will be no chance of promotion and more chance of needing to move on. This may be a blessing in disguise. The Universe is pushing you to find a better work situation. Relocating to an area that has robust job growth can greatly improve your prospects for finding a lucrative position that's highly enjoyable.
SCORPIO(October24th-November22nd) On the 9th, you'll meet some interesting people at a party or professional conference. It's best to maintain an air of formality with these people in the early stages. One or two of the individuals you meet will have shady characters. The last thing you want is to let down your guard with someone who will milk you of time, energy and resources. Just because someone is well informed and has a good education does not mean they are trustworthy. The Full Moon on the 25th brings the end to a demanding work assignment. It will be such a relief to get this project off your desk. Negative feedback from officials should be expected. You weren't given enough time or resources to do justice to this work. Instead of getting defensive, let these remarks roll off your back. Bigger and better opportunities are ahead; keep your eyes open for them.
PISCES (February20th-March20th) A close relationship will show signs of strain on or around the 9th. That's when a deceptive New Moon will cause you to jump to conclusions about your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. Instead of trying to read your friend's mind, ask them outright what they want from your relationship. The answer may surprise you. This is not a good time to get engaged, exchange wedding vows or sign a binding contract. The Full Moon on the 25th brings a financial disappointment. Payment for work will be much less than you expected. A contractor could deduct pay for supplies or hidden expenses. The injustice of this situation will penetrate deeply. Launching a legal suit will be futile, since the law is on their side. Chalk this up to a learning experience and move on. Dwelling on your disappointment will only cause you to miss other moneymaking opportunities.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st) The New Moon on the 9th marks a professional opportunity. Look before you leap. The terms of this deal are extremely murky. You might be told you can work from home, only to discover you'll be expected to spend all your time in the corporate office. If you are thinking of running for office, consider what a toll this position will take on your family life. You may be expected to be on call at all times for this position. That won't work if you're raising children, caring for an elderly relative or supporting a busy romantic partner. On the 25th, the Full Moon will bring some disappointing news. An emotional or financial gamble will backfire, leaving you in a difficult position. It may be necessary to cancel a trip or cut back on extras for children, like music lessons or summer camp. Let this be a lesson before sinking money into the next sure thing.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-January20th) The terms of a legal deal will be extremely unfair. It may be necessary to hire a lawyer to protect your interests. Even then, the New Moon on the 9th will make it difficult to get justice. It may be best to settle and walk away from an

Artist Profile - Jan Drury BA (Hons) Fine Art I have always had an artistic streak and in 2004 I decided to look at taking an art ‘A’ level. I was persuaded to take a two-year part time course in Foundation Art and Design, as a mature student. I passed this with Distinction. I then studied for a Foundation Degree in Contemporary Fine Art Practice, achieving a BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2010. I have been an active member of Artists Network Bedfordshire and United Society of Artists and shown and sold art work in a number of galleries including The Menier Gallery and South Bank Gallery, London. I am an abstract artist who works in many different media. I mix different types of liquids and watch how they react and whether they repel each other, using these results when producing my work. I produce work that is highly visual and tactile. I also use layering, collage and batik. I encourage people to feel and touch my paintings I tend to produce ‘one off’ original pieces of art. Most of my work cannot be repeated. I can produce something similar but not exact. This is because there are many processes involved and each reaction is different. That’s the beauty of this technique; the end result only becomes apparent when the piece is finished. Some of my recent abstract pieces reflect my love of the sea based on photographs which I have taken. I also produce work using the solar printing method. A hard plate is made from either a photograph or piece of art. This is then used as a printing plate. Again, all the results are unique and very varied. In 2015 I took part in a project called The Threads of Time. This involved looking at items from the Hertfordshire Archives and producing a piece of work based on one or more of the items and on the family home. This has been on display at Hertfordshire Archives Library and Upstairs Gallery, Berkhamsted. In 2016 I worked on a piece for the Weaving Narratives project, which has been on show in Bedfordshire together with a further project in 2017 involving the archives looking at Bedfordshire women and their identity. It was shown at the Panacea Museum in Bedford. I am now carrying out research for a piece of work on the Heritage of Dunstable.
14
I have also produced a series of pieces that look at the traces our ancestors leave behind that continue in future generations and will be developing this further More recently I have been making screens for screen printing which will feature in future work. I work very closely with Joanne Bowes and volunteer in The Workhouse helping her with the sales and accounts, amongst other things. Hero Cheese of the Month - Cheddar At The Cheese Plate in Buntingford, we have over 200 types of cheese from around the world but the most consumed cheese in the world is Cheddar, originating from Somerset around the late 12th Century it took its name from the Gorge or caves in the town of Cheddar that were used to store the cheese. The constant temperature and humidity of the caves provided a perfect environment for maturing the cheese. The town also gave its name to a unique part of the cheesemaking process – known as Cheddaring which is the process of turning the slabs of curd and piling them on top of each other in a controlled way to help drain the whey. It also stretches the curd. The process helps to create a harder cheese with firm body and is unique to Cheddar making. Some History Cheddar making in Somerset goes back more than 800 years with records from the King of England’s accounts (the so called “Great Roll of the Pipe”) noting that in 1170 the King purchased 10,240 lbs (4.6 tonnes) of Cheddar cheese at a cost of a farthing a pound. The king at the time - Henry II - declared Cheddar cheese to be the best in Britain and his son Prince John (who reigned between 1199 and 1216) clearly thought the same as there are records of him continuing to buy the cheese for the great Royal banquets. In the reign of Charles I (1625 to 1649) parliamentary records show that the cheese made in Cheddar was sold before it was even made and indeed was only available at the court. In 1724 Daniel Defoe devoted a chapter to Cheddar and its cheese in his book “A Tour of the Islands of Great Britain”. Today Cheddar cheese is still made in Somerset but also all over the world. It is made on farms in the West Country and 14 makers are licensed to use the EU Protected Designation of Origin “West Country Farmhouse Cheddar”. The cheese must be made on a farm in the four counties of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset from locally produced milk and using traditional Cheddar making techniques – including hand Cheddaring. West Country Farmhouse Cheddar is matured in the region and sold at a minimum age of 9 months and is subject to regular grading throughout its life. As Cheddar matures so its taste develops from the young creamy taste of mild Cheddar to complex, lasting, slightly nutty flavours of mature Cheddar and beyond.
16
Major brands include Cathedral City, Pilgrims Choice, Colliers and Seriously Strong whilst many supermarkets will now include the creamery or the farm in which the cheese was made e.g. Davidstow, Taw Valley, Lake District, Caledonian, Pembrokeshire, Lockerbie and Isle of Man in the case of major creameries and Alvis, Gould, Denhay, Parkham, Brue Farm, Quickes, Goodwood Estate or Keens, in the case of farm made cheeses. Cheddar is made in most areas of the country often as a balancing cheese when milk supply from a farm peaks. Traditionally made Farmhouse varieties, which may be cloth bound, become significantly harder as they age; the texture becomes drier and the flavours generally more complex than their creamery counterparts. Some of the farm-made Cheddar uses unpasteurised (raw) milk which will tend to have rather more complex and stronger flavours, whilst others will use pasteurised milk. Cheese flavour will also vary depending on the time of year it was made and what the cows may have been eating at that time. Creamery made Cheddar is increasingly being sold at a longer age in response to changing consumer tastes for tastier cheese. These more mature (extra mature or vintage) Cheddars often have a characteristic sweet, nutty flavour with a very long finish. Mild Cheddar remains popular as an everyday cheese and is characterised by a gentle, creamy flavour and has the added advantage of slicing easily. So, whatever your preference there will be a Cheddar for you depending on its age, how it was made, where it was made and the time of year that it was made. If you can, try before you buy because every Cheddar will be slightly different. Find the one that you like and try to remember its name and its age (as defined by mild, medium, mature etc). For a difference try one of the smoked or smoke flavoured Cheddars which many cheese shops now offer or the blended Cheddars where ingredients such as herbs, spices, MarmiteŠ or fruits may have been blended with the matured cheese to produce a whole range of different taste sensations.

Corn Sweetcorn is in season! Delicious, British grown corn can be found everywhere at this time of year. A versatile and delicious food that you can have any which way. Corn on the cob with butter and pepper, barbecued with paprika or dried out and turned into posh popcorn on the cob. How ever you like it it’s not only delicious but so good for you. Some facts about corn: (we think you will be surprised) 1. Corn is a cereal crop that is part of the grass family. 2. An ear or cob of corn is actually part of the flower and an individual kernel is a seed. 3. On average an ear of corn has 800 kernels in 16 rows. 4. Corn will always have an even number of rows on each cob. 5. A bushel is a unit of measure for volumes of dry commodities such as shelled corn kernels. 1 Bushel of corn is equal to 8 gallons. 6. With the exception of Antarctica, corn is produced on every continent in the world. 7. There are over 3,500 different uses for corn products. 8. As well as being eaten by the cob, corn is also processed and used as a major component in many food items like cereals, peanut butter, potato chips, soups, marshmallows, ice cream, baby food, cooking oil, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressing, and chewing gum. 9. Juices and soft drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain corn sweeteners. A bushel of corn can sweeten 400 cans of soft drink. 10. Corn and its by products are also found in many non-food items such as fireworks, rust preventatives, glue, paint, dyes, laundry detergent, soap, aspirin, antibiotics, paint, shoe polish, ink, cosmetics, the manufacturing of photographic film, and in the production of plastics. 11. Thousands of acres of corn are grown in this country to feed bio-digesters that produce electricity. Every year we promote sweetcorn and how important it is to get really fresh corn on the cob with leaves, rather than the ready skinned, 4 day old, plastic packed, supermarket offer. According to ‘Organic Facts’, corn aids in reducing the risk of digestive issues such as constipation. It provides necessary minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron and copper, and helps alleviate anaemia with its B12 and folic acid content. It also helps you become beautiful! Corn is found in many cosmetic products and can aid in alleviating rashes or irritations of the skin.

Apples & Pears Apples and pears are now ripening on the trees ready for this years harvest. Apples and pears grow world wide and there are hundreds of varieties. Yet the supermarkets only stock 12, and recent news shows that some apples may be a year old by the time we eat them! Each variety has its purpose; from eating straight from the tree, like a delicious russet with its strange rough skin to a tart Bramley perfect for chutney or apple crumble. Some varieties even improve if stored naturally for 3 months. Did you know: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Apples are a member of the rose family. Apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of fibre. Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit. Apples originated on the border of Kazakhstan and China. Before tobacco was introduced in Europe, pear leaves were smoked. There are over 3000 varieties of pears grown around the world. There is mention in the Domesday Book of old pear trees as boundary markers. 8. Pears were used as a natural remedy against nausea in ancient Greece. 9. Pear wood is used to make furniture, musical instruments, and wood carvings. It is also used to make wooden kitchen utensils because it doesn’t impart any colour or odour to the food and because it is tough enough to withstand repeated trips through the dishwasher without splintering or warping. Architect’s rulers are made from pear wood because it doesn’t warp. 10. When you eat a pear, your body absorbs glucose, which is converted into energy. Eating a pear can be a great pick-me-up if you feel sluggish in the afternoon. Every community should really have an orchard and apple press, after all ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. As most communities have a farm shop it seems to make sense to make the shop that centre, especially if locals are encouraged to switch from the supermarket to buying from the shop and even growing produce to sell in the shop, with our Crop for the Shop scheme, or cooking to swap food at the shop on special food swap days.

Wine Column
French Wines are deep routed in tradition with few that would argue that France is the country that long ago set the standards by which wine is judged. With Other countries copying there blends and wine making techniques, but times are changing and other countries are starting to pull away with their easy to read labelling and adventurous experimental Blends, the Australians are trying things like Riesling blended with sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne (Stump Jump £12.00) or Shiraz with Viognier (d’ Arenberg Laughing Magpie £21.50) there is a full description, tasting notes and even the ideal serving temperature with the grapes easily and clearly identified, and this is noticed across all of the New World, and we are starting to see the French follow suit, in the South west it was just Cahors or La cot on their labelling, now due to the power house that is the Argentine Malbec, the French are now conforming towards adding the worldwide cognised
20
Grapes on their labels like our Chateau La Coustarelle (£10.00) Malbec with a splash of Merlot, and with many in the Loire Valley blending Pinot Noir...Yes Pinot Noir (unheard off) with Cabernet Franc or Malbec being used (J. Mourat Collection, £11.50) ) showing some stunning results, and it’s not just the labels that are changing it’s also the bottle shape and closure, yes the French will be hard to convert in moving to screw cap, but there are a few vineyards moving in this direction, and why not if the wine does not need to be aged then use a screw cap, it will only reduce the end cost which is a win - win for the consumer. I have even seen glass being used instead of cork which is one of the most modern closure methods around, I can just imagine all the neighbouring vineyards all turning their nose up at this. It’s the most reputable areas that will be hard pushed to convert such as a Bordeaux will always use the same shape and along with Burgundy and Cote Du Rhone, it’s the lesser areas such as the Loire valley and Province (hour glass shape) that are embracing modern ideas and coming up with some brilliant designs and blends. I love what J. Mourat winery is doing, not just blending pinot noir but also with your bottle design.......... Well done France for entering the 21st century and long may it continue.
