vo orwo or d If we did not die, if our existence did not unravel in the endless darkness of death, would life be quite so precious, so extraordinary or so moving. So simple but most of us spend our lives fearing what is to come in the form of death, yet the fear is not death itself but the uncertainty of it’s time and place. Death is a tragic, colossal and unstoppable drama according to some but to others it is a foolish man who says that he fears death, not because it will pain when it comes, but because it pains in the prospect. No matter how you may think of death it is something we all share, a common ground with all mortals that on a certain day at a certain time he will be waiting for you. This was a difficult list of songs to decide on. We wanted songs that would have a meaning with this theme in the broadest sense of the word. That’s why we’ve touched on almost everything that you may go through in your life. First of all the introduction of Death itself in the form of Scott Walker’s classic Brel song ‘My Death’ where he sings not of the fear of death but of the different stages of his life that die and that no matter what may come of him there will always be love to see him through.
We touch on the pain of relationships after the loss of a loved one be it through death or just simply a break-up, for some this too can make you grieve like you grieve someone’s death. You can feel the pain in The Blue Nile’s ‘Tinseltown In The Rain’. Then there is the loss of someone close due to a sickness like in the Verve’s ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’, this haunting song from Richard Ashcroft is about his father and not as many may think about his own drug addiction. We couldn’t have done this and not touched on religion so we sing of hope but also of despair as God means different things to so many people. But finally we bring you to the fact that no matter what happens we are all going to die and that how we’ve lived our lives will probably determine how we feel about death when the time comes. From the moment you’re born you’re clock is ticking towards your death. So enjoy your life while it lasts… Felix Maginn SEPTEMBER 2011

2. My Death BREL/SHUMAN - CARLIN MUSIC GROUP
My death is like, a swinging door, a patient girl who knows the score, whistle for her, and the passing time. † My death waits like, a bible truth, at the funeral of my youth, weep loud for that, and the passing time. † My death waits like, a witch at night, and surely as our love is bright, let’s laugh for us, and the passing time. † But whatever is behind the door, there is nothing much to do, angel or devil I don’t care, for in front of that door, there is you. † My death waits like, a beggar blind, who sees the world with an unlit mind, throw him a dime, for the passing time. † My death waits, to allow my friends, a few good times before it ends, let’s drink to that, and the passing time, My death waits in, your arms, your thighs, your cool fingers will close my eyes, let’s not talk about, the passing time. † But whatever is behind the door, there is nothing much to do, angel or devil I don’t care, for in front of that door, there is you. † My death waits, among the falling leaves, in magicians, mysterious sleeves, rabbits, dogs, and the passing times. † My death waits, among the flowers, where the blackish shadow cowers, let’s pick lilacs, for the passing time. † My death waits in, a double bed, sails of oblivion at my head, pull up the sheets, against the passing time. † But whatever is behind the door, there is nothing much to do, angel or devil I don’t care, for in front of that door, there is you.

Don’t ask me, What you know is true, Don’t have to tell you, I love your precious heart. † I, I was standing, You were there, Two worlds collided, And they could never tear us apart. † We could live, For a thousand years, But if I hurt you, I’d make wine from your tears. † I told you, That we could fly, ‘Cause we all have wings, But some of us don’t know why. † I, I was standing, You were there, Two worlds collided, And they could never ever tear us apart.

All this talk of getting old, It’s getting me down my love, Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown, This time I’m comin’ down. † And I hope you’re thinking of me, As you lay down on your side, Now the drugs don’t work, They just make you worse, But I know I’ll see your face again. † Now the drugs don’t work, They just make you worse, But I know I’ll see your face again. † But I know I’m on a losing streak, ‘Cause I passed down my old street, And if you

Despair and doubt in the blood: Autumn, a smell rotten-sweet: What stirs in the drenching wood? What drags at my heart, my feet? What stirs in the wood? † Nothing stirs, nothing cries. Run weasel, cry bird for me, Comfort my ears, soothe my eyes! Horror on ground, over tree! Nothing calls, nothing flies. † Once in a blasted wood, A shrieking fevered waste, We jeered at Death where he stood: I jeered, I too had a taste, Of Death in the wood. † Am I alive and the rest, Dead, all dead? sweet friends, With the sun they have journeyed west; For me now night never ends, A night without rest. † Death, your revenge is ripe. Spare me! but can Death spare? Must I leap, howl to your pipe, Because I denied you there? Your vengeance is ripe. † Death, ay, terror of Death: If I laughed at you, scorned you, now, You flash in my eyes, choke my breath… ‘Safe home.’ Safe? Twig and bough, Drip, drip, drip with Death!
10. The Green Fields of France ERIC BOGLE
Well, how do you do, Private William McBride, Do you mind if I sit down here by your graveside? And rest for awhile in the warm summer sun, I’ve been walking all day, and I’m nearly done, And I see by your gravestone you were only 19, When you joined
the glorious fallen in 1916, Well, I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean, Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene? † Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipes lowly? Did the rifles fir o’er you as they lowered you down? Did the bugles sound The Last Post in chorus? Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest? † And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind, In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined? And, though you died back in 1916, To that loyal heart are you forever 19? Or are you a stranger without even a name, Forever enshrined behind some glass pane, In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained, And fading to yellow in a brown leather frame? † The sun’s shining down on these green fields of France; The warm wind blows gently, and the red poppies dance. The trenches have vanished long under the plow; No gas and no barbed wire, no guns firing now. But here in this graveyard that’s still No Man’s Land, The countless white crosses in mute witness stand, To man’s blind indifference to his fellow man. And a whole generation who were butchered and damned. † And I can’t help but wonder, no Willie McBride, Do all those who lie here know why they died?, Did you really believe them when they told you “The Cause?”, Did you really believe that this war would end wars? Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame, The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain, For Willie McBride, it all happened again, And again, and again, and again, and again.
