Suffolk Refugee Support An Update on the Ukranian Refugee Situation

“Our thoughts continue to be with everyone affected by the violence and destruction in Ukraine, the millions of people already forced from their homes, and all those still prevented from seeking safety by continued Russian bombardment. We know all too well from more than two decades of working with displaced people the human cost of this – the trauma of lives suddenly turned upside down, the heart-breaking decisions individuals and families are forced to make, and the pain of separation from loved ones. Our colleagues and clients who have experienced this directly elsewhere, including people recently arrived from Afghanistan, in particular share the pain of the Ukrainian people and all those displaced. We welcome the UK government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme as a way of harnessing public generosity and supporting those Ukrainian refugees who wish to come to the UK. We have seen an incredible outpouring of support and compassion from the Suffolk public, including many offers of rooms in people’s houses, and hope this scheme can avoid some of the accommodation issues and blockages experienced by other schemes recently (such as the Home Office’s Afghan resettlement programme). However, we call for the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable refugees to be prioritised in the delivery of the scheme, and we wait for important further details on many practical elements. In particular, we would like to know more about how refugees will be safely matched with hosts, how vital support services will be provided to traumatised people, and what the contingency plans are if accommodation arrangements break down. We are also concerned that the requirement for refugees to have visas will make the process complex, lengthy and hard to access. Suffolk Refugee Support is not playing any role in registering offers of accommodation or matching hosts with individual refugees. If you would like to find details of the Homes for Ukraine scheme and register to offer accommodation, you should do so through the UK government’s website here: https://homesforukraine.campaign.gov.uk/. If you have registered with the Homes for Ukraine scheme and are looking for a way to be matched with a refugee, Reset (who help communities resettle refugees) are registering hosts and refugees now to help with this process. We recommend this as a way to be matched, so that the process can be managed securely and the most vulnerable people given a route to safety. You can fill in Reset’s host form here - https://www.homesforukraine.org.uk/, and watch an information event here -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n-Wmru5LIA&t=1278s for people interested in hosting refugees. We encourage people to research the Homes for Ukraine scheme thoroughly and think through carefully what it will mean for you and your family before registering. There are some questions and answers on how the scheme will work, some good advice, and interesting first hand experience of hosting a refugee from links on our website here - https://suffolkrefugee.org.uk/our-response-to-the-situation-in-ukraine/ .These are likely to be highly traumatised and vulnerable people, often separated from loved ones who are in direct danger back home and who might need specialist support. Also, bear in mind that refugees sometimes prefer to be near other people from their community or who speak their language – often this will be in larger towns and cities so rural accommodation without good transport links might not be suitable for everyone. We stand ready to provide whatever practical support we can to Ukrainian refugees arriving in Suffolk, to help them integrate, begin processing trauma and rebuild their lives here. This might include English language teaching, employment advice or support groups. We are not taking or coordinating any donations of items at this stage, but will put out appeals for items on our Facebook page as and when they are needed. Suffolk County Council also have up-to-date information here, including a dedicated email address for offers of help.” See the full Article at https://suffolkrefugee.org.uk/our-response-to-the-situation-in-ukraine/ Suffolk County Council Link - How you can support Refugees: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/community-and-safety/communities/community-engagement/supporting-afghan-ukrainian-refugees/ Charity Donation Links Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) - https://donation.dec.org.uk/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal British Red Cross - https://www.redcross.org.uk/ (Link on front Page)

From the Rectory

Dear Friends and neighbours, As I write this letter the news from the Ukraine is very upsetting and most of us feel pretty helpless. Some people have given money or clothes or toiletries. I saw a photo where in Poland, women left children’s buggies and blankets at a railway station for Ukrainian mothers fleeing The War. People want to help. But for many of us all we can do is weep and pray, which is okay; St Paul says in his letter to the Roman church, when talking about what Christians are to do in the face of evil and distress. ‘Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good ...Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.’ The last verse of the chapter is good advice, ‘Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.’ It is easy to get caught up in fear and anger, and then to try and strike back. But that rarely does any good, a better way surely is to follow in the footsteps of others who have suffered and forgiven. People like Nelson Mandela who said, ‘As I walked out of the door toward the gate that would lead to freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.’ (a prison of his own making perhaps.) Bernard Meltzer who had been a prosecutor at the Nuremburg trials said, ‘When you forgive you don’t change the past, but you do change the future.’ I don’t know how long this war will last. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to live through it. But I do know that there are good people who walk this earth and I believe that eventually good overcomes evil. I believe in a God of hope, and Easter is a time of great hope. I believe that the risen Jesus walks with us wherever we may be. So, I will keep praying and weeping and choose to rejoice in the good people I see, and trust God to overcome evil with good. God bless, Susan

At our March meeting the Council considered a revised application to build houses on the former garage site opposite the primary school. The Council joined a number of local residents in voicing opposition to the proposed development as they did not meet the policies of the Neighbourhood Plan. The Council’s view is that the 8 houses proposed are too many for such a small site and that this would lead to issues with parking on what is already a difficult road. We also had concerns about the design of the houses that appeared to us to be out of keeping to the local area. We have invited the developer to discuss any future proposals with us in advance. It is great to see that the Ivy House has now re-opened as Roscoe’s Restaurant at the Ivy House and we wish the new proprietors well. Following our registration of the Ivy House as an Asset of Community Value we are really pleased to see the Ivy House re-opening as a pub and restaurant. The annual parish meeting takes place on Thursday 28th April at 7.30pm at the Community Centre. This isn’t a parish council meeting but an opportunity to hear from groups across the parish about their activities this year and plans for the future. The next Parish Council meeting will take place on Monday 11th April at 7.30pm at the Court House. James Hargrave, Chair of Stradbroke Parish Council

Sustaining Wildlife Thank you, Leisure Centre and Stradbroke Primary School for organising pupils to paint beautiful pictures and designs on the six swift boxes for the Leisure Centre this spring. And thank you especially to those pupils! Gardening For Wildlife This might be controversial…... Pests or pals? Save our slugs and snails! The RHS now classes slugs and snails as playing “an important role” in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. www.rhs.org.uk say gardens must be naturally balanced with food for birds, frogs, grass snakes, lizards.. Slugs and snails are natural food for wildlife. So advice is to sparingly use only organic slug control (if you must) and place under a bit of wood near vulnerable plants--hostas, lettuces and dahlias. The rest of the creatures are free grub for birds! SAVE money, work, insects and birds in one fell swoop! Ban all chemical garden sprays—they upset natural balance, are deadly to all insects, especially flying pollinators such as honey, bumble and all solitary bees, wasps, ladybirds, lacewings, beetles and flies. BAN house fly traps outdoors—flies are vital food for insect-eating birds such as swallows, house martins, swifts, robins, warblers, blue tits, nuthatches, blackbirds, house sparrows, thrushes, woodpeckers. (Insect numbers are now DOWN 50% mainly due to powerful insecticides). More insects means more birds for you. Excellent for garden tips: www.themiddlesizedgarden.co.uk. The Feb ¼ hr programme on You Tube is about slugs and snails. If you have tips for wildlife gardening, we can publish them. antoinettewisbey@gmail.com Toni Wisbey, Stradbroke PC Climate Change Group

Stradbroke Court House and Library News

We are finished with toilets and lavatory humour, completely flushed out!! Thank you, thank you so much to all of you who supported us with ‘Pose On The Throne’ and #TheStinkingGreatRead @Stradbroke Library. It was a great success and lots of fun, particularly on Suffolk Libraries Day with lots of pink, frilly bloomers and judges, taking their turn on our famous toilet! Thanks to Jon Wilson for taking the photos and Laura Chalkley, his lovely assistant, making the ‘Loo Photoshoot Experience’, so much fun. My special thanks to Allan Hampson who lovingly restored the privy for us at the Court House and the Court House Café volunteers who served refreshments, made cakes and kept the loads of people who visited us happy. Not forgetting Eliza and Isaac for helping us raise money, Candice (Flossy Design) for bringing her papercraft stall and Issy and Kamal in the library/ Post Office, open for business as usual. Also Dave Dawson, who came in on Friday to help move stuff, set up and get ready for Saturday. I have created a slideshow of our SLD ‘Posers’ and you can view it on the Stradbroke Library & Post Office Facebook page. Take a look, share and like us, if you feel it is good. The next awesome, exciting project we are working on is our ‘Stradbroke Tapestry’ with Suffolk Libraries and Suffolk Artlink. It is a brilliant project and so much creative talent has come out during our Sunday sessions in the Court House. Check out our Facebook page for the progress, updates and photos on this. You will be amazed! Our next dementia- friendly ‘Friday Friends Café ‘is Friday 1st April. Join us for coffee, refreshments and conversation in a relaxed informal setting. Open to everyone who would like to come along. Come along to our ‘Little Fingers’ Craft session for children on Monday 11th April 2-4pm and make a mini Easter basket, decorate with colourful eggs and we will add the chocolate! Hosted by Candice @ Flossy Designs. Maureen John Library/Post Office Manager

Radio Stradbroke

It seems almost inconceivable that Radio Stradbroke have been broadcasting continuous, daily, live programmes for two years now, with no sign of slowing down, rather like the pandemic. They said that WW1 would be over by Christmas. That proved to be wrong also. In between, we turn our minds to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Sunday 5th June, and 'Stradbroke Music Day' on Saturday 9th July, both approaching with undue haste. We need volunteers in many areas on Music Day. If you think you could help, whether it be bar work, setting up, taking down, please get in touch. Remember it is a FREE festival, so the more we can do through volunteers, the more likely we are to raise enough money to hold the music day in future years. Thank you. Michael Hugman

The Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre

At the last Committee meeting the Stradbroke Community Centre Trustees voted in favour of making a donation of £1000 to the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) in support of the Ukranian refugees. The proposed Community Centre extension - The results of the survey about the extension to the Centre and all comments received have now been published and can be viewed on the website – stradbrokeonline.org.uk. No decision will be made about the way forward until a meeting to be held with the Parish Council on March 22nd, determines their views and support. Jane Merritt

The Friends of All Saints, Stradbroke (FOASS)

Following a meeting of the Membership of FOASS on March 16th 2022 and a subsequent vote taken, it was agreed to dissolve the Charity. In 2020 we agreed to use our funds to rebuild the bulging and loose sections of the Clerestory wall of All Saints Church, Stradbroke and align at least two pairs of Clerestory windows, as indicated in the last Quinquennial Inspection. The time delays, caused by Covid and Church bureaucracy, will no doubt mean the original estimate of £52,000 will have risen. It has been agreed to hand over the £46,446.73 currently in our account to the Parochial Church Council Fabric Fund, on the understanding that this money is used on the repair of the Clerestory windows alone. To date we have raised £107,644.76 and we have very much enjoyed the FOASS fund raising activities over the years and the results can be seen in the Church today. We are confident there will always be people like yourselves who will help with financing the fabric of this fine and now “At Risk” building which was officially added to the Historic England At Risk register in 2019. Our Rector, The Revd. Canon Susan Loxton, will be arranging a Thanksgiving Service when the work on the Clerestory is completed; we look forward to seeing a full church and I would like to thank you for all your regular help and support over the years. Margaret Streeter, Chairman for FOASS

Evacuees It is 1939 and war has been declared. An enormous effort is made to get the children out of London and away to relative safety in the country. Stradbroke receives fifty-seven children and one of these evacuees, Alan Purdie, writes an account of his experience. ” . . on the morning of the evacuation, I can remember it being very early and walking from the local school, where the evacuees had been assembled to Dagenham dock and boarding a Paddle Steamer, which I now assume took us to Ipswich or Lowestoft. How we arrived at Stradbroke I cannot remember other than sitting in, which I now presume to be, the school hall.” Alan was billeted at Coles Mill, with Mr and Mrs Cole and their sons Ken and Peter. He writes,” Being only five I remember wanting to go home to my parents, but after a while I settled in and came to look upon Ken and Peter Cole as my elder brothers.” The archive also holds an account of those times by Ken and Peter Cole: “Our parents were but one of the many volunteers in the village who were willing and able to receive a new young addition to the family home.” The placement was successful, and Alan returned home to London in 1942. The full accounts of those times are on the Stradbroke Village Archive under references SVA/6/102 and SVA/6/78. Ann Readman, SARA Well with the dark winter nights almost behind us, we welcomed 13 visitors to our March OPEN meeting. With posters up, Facebook notification, Stradbroke Magazine & Stradbroke Online adverts, we invited non-Members to join us, for a talk on “Rape investigations”; “SHORT WORD, LONG SENTENCE”, by eminent Forensic Scientist – Mary Newton. Mary provided a fascinating talk, on the scientific processes undertaken to prove or disprove Rape cases. Did you know some 95,000 Women & 12,000 Men are raped per annum across England & Wales. A horrifying statistic & by raising awareness on what CONSENT means, must be eradicated. Whilst this was a difficult subject to address, it was done in a very informative & appropriate manner. Our Hostesses as well as supplying the beautiful flowers for the evening, had made some delicious cakes & we tempted both guests & Members alike to sample this fine fayre, with hot beverage to boot. With a chance to socialise & tempt new Members to join us, we proceeded with the business of the WI. Outings were discussed, Litter picking in the Village, Jubilee Celebrations & much more. A vote was taken & Members agreed to continue with afternoon meetings in January & February 2023, due to dark nights. Mary was invited to draw the Raffle of which many winners went home with a bottle of wine or chocolates. (Always a winner!) Our President drew the meeting to a close & a reminder that the next meeting will be on April 14th at 7.30pm. The Speaker will be Elene Marsden who will give a talk entitled “The Truth About Our Clothing – Environmental Impact, Upcycling & the Second hand Solution”. New Members always welcome, try before you buy & come as a Guest for your first visit £3.00 on the door. Linda Webb

Robin Hood Pantomime

Loved By The Good! Our Robin Hood pantomime was unable to take place last year, and covid nearly defeated us this year, too. One of the cast caught the virus meaning that shows had to be cancelled. Fortunately, the final performance was OK to go ahead at St Edmund's Hall, Hoxne, and in the the true Robin Hood spirit of doing good, the group were able to raise money and send a cheque for £125 to the Red Cross for humanitarian works in Ukraine. Many thanks to all who contributed. Roy Preston, Puzzle House Pantomimes

Stradbroke Cinema

On April 21st we will be showing ‘Spencer’. Set over the Christmas period at Sandringham, this is a picture of what might have happened as the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has gone cold and there is a rumour of divorce. There is eating and drinking, shooting and hunting as usual but this year, things will be very different. An eerily real performance by Kristen Stewart as Diana but equally fine turns from Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins and Jack Farthing. An exercise in claustrophobia and tension this is not a fairy tale but a beautifully crafted and introspective look at Diana. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. It is no longer mandatory for you wear a face covering during the performance but please do so if it makes you feel more comfortable. There will be an interval half way through the film, with ice-creams on sale and the Bar will also be open. Tickets will be on sale from April 1st via the online booking system - £5.50 for adults, £3 for 16s and under. If you are unable to use our booking system, tickets will be available using card payments on the door and at the Bar but we will never refuse cash! Full details of all our forthcoming films can be found on the Village website at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt

The Stradbroke Strollers

We are a community-led informal Walking Group who meet every Thursday and are back with our new name! Please come along and join us for a friendly, gentle 45 minute -1 hour walk and chat around this beautiful Village, meeting outside the Stradbroke Courthouse at 10.30am. Longer walks can be arranged too, as long as we have enough Walk Leaders. Unless it is really raining or blowing a gale, we will be walking! Everyone is welcome, whatever your age or ability - all you need are sensible shoes and clothing – and we look forward to seeing you and enjoying a chat with a cup of tea, coffee and cake in the Stradbroke Courthouse Café afterwards. Please be aware that you will be walking at your own risk but I know it will be a really enjoyable stroll. For more information contact Dennis Merritt Tel: 01379 388 382. RoughCast Theatre presents Macbeth

RoughCast Theatre presents Macbeth - March 14th – April 3rd "Light thickens, and the crow makes wing to the rooky wood. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

It is hard to imagine that the cricket season is four weeks away. The seasons still waver between Spring and a wintry chill. The grass is growing, some pre-season rolling can take place, but cricket still seems a long way away. We are yet to secure a sponsor, or indeed an overseas player/coach, reliant on some community coaching help from the Suffolk Board to hopefully make inroads at the High School. Even the magic of the National Village Cup is once more missing, an away trip to either Lakenheath or Great Bardfield Village is our reward, with only the petrol companies looking forward to it. I know many of you like to know when we are playing; we actually have two home fixtures on Saturday 1st & 8th of May. Let us hope it is a little warmer, and maybe we will have filled one or two of those vacancies. If you fancy playing some cricket for Stradbroke, give me a ring on 07796-465347. Any age or ability. Michael Hugman

Citizens Advice Mid Suffolk

I love live music and now that restrictions have lifted, I’m keen to start going to events again. I’ve booked tickets for some gigs over the next few months, but I’m still a little worried. I can’t quite believe things are fully back to normal. What will happen if restrictions come back in? It’s understandable to be feeling apprehensive when there’s been so much change, and knowing your rights will help you deal with anything unexpected. If you’ve got tickets to an event which goes ahead, but you change your mind about going or realise you’re no longer able to go, you have no legal right to a refund. However, if the event is cancelled, your right to a refund will depend on how you bought the ticket. If you booked through an official seller and the organiser cancels, moves, reschedules, or makes the event behind closed doors, you should get a refund. This is true even if it’s cancelled due to a government ban on large events. If this happens, contact the official seller to find out how you can get a refund. If you bought your ticket from a ticket-reselling website, your refund will depend on the site's terms and conditions. If you’re worried about the event being cancelled, it’s a good idea to look at the terms and conditions before booking. If you bought from a private seller, unfortunately it’s unlikely you’ll be able to recover your money, even if the event is cancelled or rescheduled. We recommend contacting the seller to see what they can do. Ahead of any events you’ve booked, keep checking the information from the official seller or organiser to make sure you know straight away about any updates, like changes to the date or cancellations. Another thing to be aware of is that scammers exploit these situations for their own benefit. If your event is cancelled and anyone - whether it’s a person or a company - offers their services to try to recover money on your behalf, be suspicious. Make sure that you're aware of the signs of a potential scam and always be on the lookout. Citizens Advice Mid Suffolk can provide advice on this or any other issue, including debt, employment, benefits and family law. Heveningham Hall Country Fair Returns for 2022

I am very pleased to announce that the Fair will be held this year on the weekend of 2/3 July. You can expect all the usual attractions and more details will be placed in the next issue. As it has been 3 years since the last Fair, some people may have moved away and of course there will also be new people in the area. The Country Fair can only operate with the valuable support given to us by our amazing volunteers and so I would be very grateful if you wish to volunteer this year, that you contact Julie Collett as soon as possible so she can assess the number of volunteers available. The duties are not onerous and cover a variety of areas from car parking, patrolling the site and assisting the public, helping in the tea tent and more. You can volunteer your time from as little as 2 hours up to the whole weekend, the choice is yours. To volunteer or just to find out what's involved, email juliecollett38@gmail.com Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust is a registered charity and all proceeds are available to local charities.
