They can join our adventures as they explore the CREEPY HOUSE, simply by reading 6 books over the summer holidays from the library. They can discover the secrets of the CREEPY HOUSE and meet some of the hair-raising residents. Are you brave enough to explore ‘The Awful Upstairs’, ‘The Gruesome Ground Floor and ‘The Spine-tingling Cellar’??? There are CREEPY bookmarks, stickers, keyrings and fridge magnets to collect as you progress through the game. For all those who finish the CREEPY HOUSE challenge, there will be a presentation of medals and certificates at our party in September! BE THERE IF YOU DARE…. Maureen John, Library Manager

As before it will be in the Community Centre. I’m sorry there was no festival last year as many of you will be aware Ann was very ill and sadly passed away in January this year. Ann had done so much for the Jazz Festival over the last 12 ears, this one day festival is to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich, where Ann spent her last few weeks. We also hope to raise some money for the Stradbroke Court House & Library Trust, which she helped to keep going through think and thin. We have some great bands lined up for your pleasure, some very fine home cooked food and some very real ale. The bar will be open all day, there is easy parking, local B & Bs available and free camping for motorhomes and caravans. Tickets will be £20 each in advance or £25 on the day. Tickets can be bought online, in person at the Library or by post - Hazelnut House, Queen Street, Stradbroke IP21 5HH Tel Bob on 07585 959402 or Maureen on 07599 537405. eMail info@stradjazz.net For more information about the line up and to purchase tickets online, go to www.stradjazz.net Bob Kerr

A place of new beginnings. We welcome you to join us.

August Diary Sunday Services each week at 10.15 am 4th J. Ling 11th J. Ling 18th G. Catling 25th D. Willson We welcome you to join us --- our activities for August: 7:30pm Praying together Monday 5th st Drop in for coffee Wednesday 21 10 – 11:30am Home based Bible study Wednesday 21th 7:30pm PLEASE NOTE No Cameo Lunch in August In The Garden Recent research reported in the press confirms a widely held belief among country folk, that “People who care for a garden are more contented, better in health and likely to live longer than those with no interest in the natural world”. A poem sometimes found in gardens reminds us that…. “You are nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth” Is there a connection between gardening, which is a creative process and belief in a creator God? Over the years there have been several reports suggesting that Christian believers are also more contented, enjoy better health and therefore live longer. An article in the EADT on 19th July under the headline; “Amazing Doris still sprightly at 109”, tells of an active Ipswich resident, Doris Punchard, who at 109 is the 35th oldest person in the country. Doris is still able to get to Church being driven by her friend who is over ninety. To acknowledge God as the creator we worship in Church and cooperate with Him in creating beauty in the garden would appear to be a recipe for a long and fulfilled life. Ukraine As part of the “Hope Now” team Jackie is going to Ukraine again in September. She has already received many donations of spectacles to take, but there is room for more, also gifts of wrapped sweets would be appreciated by the guests at the Summer Camps. Jackie wishes to thank all who have supported ‘ Hope Now’ - Stradbroke Primary School, the Contact Club and many individuals. Your support is invaluable to those who have so little. Thanks for your support and prayers. For further details please contact: John 388751 Jackie 384112

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee We are now all set for the Village Show on 27th July. Bring your potatoes in to be weighed, you might win a prize. We also have the Garage Trail in the village on August 10th 8 – 12.30pm. Please book a site for £5 from Mary Ellis. Maps from Pump Cottage, Queen street - 50p. The Garden Open day was not so successful due to so many open in other villages. The gardens open were all very well manicured and looked great. Thank you all so much for all your hard work, much appreciated. From all the committee, have a lovely summer. Mary Ellis

A Message from Rev Susan Open ‘Garden’ Rev Susan warmly invites everyone to meet her at The Rectory on Saturday 3rd August. Drop in any time between 2pm and 6pm for tea, hopefully in the garden, which is being discovered again! Dear friends & neighbours, Summer is here! For many of us time for some time out from school and work, to relax, take time to think and recreation. When I was a curate my training vicar would always say re-creation, which I thought at the time a little strange, but I have come to realise that time out does give us a chance for some re-creation; not just relaxation but time to gather one’s thoughts, maybe take stock of where we are and what we are doing, and maybe time to recreate some parts of our life. I love working here among the parishes, my work gives me a chance to meet all kinds of people, I have some wonderful conversations and I get to be there for different special occasions. However, life is very busy, so I look forward to time out. I don’t really care where I am, but a good view, space to walk and relax, a good meal and a glass of wine and I feel that I am enjoying a foretaste of heaven! Of course for our children and young people august is a time of waiting for exam results and celebrating or coming to terms with results we were not expecting, and for many it will be a time of change; change of schools, maybe going to college or university. Please join me in praying for our young people; that they will keep safe, find the right path to follow and the desire to reach their potential. A prayer for the month: God of love, in an ever changing world, thank you for your unchanging love for us. Please watch over our children and young people as they enjoy the holidays and help them to choose the paths that will lead them into all you have for them. Help us Lord, to be aware of our neighbours in any kind of need and ready to offer help. Bless our homes and our communities we pray. Amen. God bless, Rev Susan

Life in the Legion “Life in the Legion” Members and guests came from a wide area to attend our annual Coffee Morning, held at Thirkettle Cottage, Queen Street, by kind invitation of Sam, Alison and Joanna Hackett. John Graham, who with his wife Jill ran the Draw, thanked our hosts for their hospitality, and we raised £224.50 for branch funds. Our Secretary, Rev David Streeter, was the speaker at our July meeting about a book, written by the late Derrick GibsonHarries who lived in Horham, called “Lifeline to Freedom” (Ulster in the Second World War), and the fifteen members present found it most interesting. In the Tribute, I mentioned the recent death of member Roland John Ray who lived at Wortham. Bernard Mills presented the annual Treasurer’s Report, and Joyce Cooper told us about her recent welfare activities, and her outings with the Branch Standard. We meet next on Thursday, 12th September, at the Low House at Laxfield at 11.30 am, followed by a two-course lunch for only £6.50. A guest speaker is being arranged. Members, please attend if you can. Michael Burton, Chairman.

W.I On the 11th July committee members were busy in their kitchens preparing lasagnes, chicken casseroles and chicken supreme, salads and wonderful desserts, all to be served at our ‘Summer Madness’ meeting that evening, and what a great evening it was. A truly summery scene awaited members on their arrival. To the accompaniment of music from Dougie Chittock on his miniature Wurlitzer, they were able to admire the garden created for the occasion by Dorothy and Elaine, and enjoy a glass of Pimms, before sitting down at the prettily laid tables, to be served the delights of the day. These were obviously much enjoyed for it wasn’t too long before second helpings were served. The desserts were greeted with equal enthusiasm, because they were just gorgeous. It was such a happy evening with so much laughter and all crowned with a monologue from Dorothy. (The subject of which many of us could recognise) A huge thank-you to Dougie and Dennis for all their help in making the evening the success it was. Thank you to Moyra for her superb Pavlova, and to the members who took over the washing up, banishing the committee from the kitchen. Finally, a great big thank you to Dorothy and Elaine, for the organisation of the whole evening, and to the committee for all their hard work. Gill Bird

Friends of All Saints Church Held their AGM in the Community Centre on Wednesday, 3rd. July. A successful year was reported on. The Church architect has told us that the required figure, to complete the work on the roof, is £80,000, for lead work on the side aisles. It is our sincere hope that the Safari Supper, on August 10th will go some way towards obtaining this huge amount, an application for grant to The National Lottery Fund is being prepared. There are still some tickets to sell for The Safari, £25 each for a three-course foody adventure around Stradbroke. The committee was re-elected en bloc, Jacqueline Holmes, Laura Chalkley, Margaret Jenkins, Margaret Streeter, Toni Wisbey, Carol Darling. The officers for the ensuing year are Margaret Jenkins (Chairman), Margaret Streeter (Vice-Chairman), Treasurer (Carol Darling) and Toni Wisbey (Secretary) Margaret Streeter

Wingfield and District Gardening Club A garden really at its best on our last visit was greatly enjoyed by everyone who was with us in June. Flourishing Iris, shrubs and roses, lovely pond, all so different from “the garden at its worst” that we saw in March when it was partly flooded! Once more delightful coffee and cake was much appreciated before we viewed our second garden in Wilby. This is a young garden with a very imaginative design that will be so enjoyable as it develops. Many interesting features, some of which have been borrowed from else where, were incorporated into this garden where one was drawn from the house to delightful seats at the far end, passing interesting plants on the way. There is no August meeting but we gather again on September 26 For further information contact Caroline on 01379 384674 th.

Stradbroke High School Eight students from Stradbroke High School spent a fascinating morning being shown around the Houses of Parliament, before meeting local MP (Central Suffolk and North Ipswich) Dr Daniel Poulter for a question and answer session near his offices in Portcullis House. The students enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the Houses of Parliament, spending time in the Queen’s robing room before being shown around the House of Lords and the House of Commons. They were given a detailed history of the building and the roots of British Democracy. They were then able to further explore this when they were invited to ask Dr Poulter about a range of current topical issues, including the UK’s position within the European Union, current concerns surrounding health care in hospitals, gay marriage, and the problems caused by insufficient rural Wi-Fi coverage. Dr Poulter was able to reassure pupils that better Wi-Fi for Suffolk was imminent and that rural issues were at the heart of his belief that Britain should maintain its trading relationship with Europe. This is an important issue as so many local farmers depend on this trade and its accompanying agricultural policy. Dr Poulter answered all the questions raised and spent time explaining some parliamentary procedure before presenting each student with a personalised certificate to reward their participation. Mrs S Moss, Head of History

Stradbroke Primary School As the Summer Term draws to an end we have had a busy and exciting week. Monday began with the “Great School Run” on Stradbroke playing field. We have calculated that the children completed a total of 198 miles when their laps of the field were added together! On Tuesday staff organised a “Healthy Living Day” where children got to participate in a range of activities to promote healthy lifestyles. These included workshops on fruit tasting, caring for teeth, heart start training and how to “train like an astronaut”! We had a marvellous performance in Wednesday’s assembly from “Musiclubz”. Pupils who have been learning to play the guitar and drums at an after school club impressed everyone with a fantastic performance of their new musical skills on these instruments. Thursday saw another visitor come to a school assembly- Mrs Johns from Stradbroke Library told the children about “The Reading Game” which is a fun activity running at Stradbroke Library for children throughout the six weeks holiday. We also had a fantastic whole school picnic lunch in the glorious sunshine! Finally on Friday we held our Year Six Leaver’s Service at Stradbroke Church. We wish our Year Six the best of luck as they transfer to their new High Schools. So, another busy week! We look forward to the new term in September and will enjoying using our fabulous pond area which a working party of parents have recently replenished for us. It looks fantastic (see the photo) and parents have made a boardwalk for pupils to use for pond dipping- thank you ponds working party! Have enjoyable and relaxing Summer holidays! Mrs. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher Stradbroke Primary

Michael Knights, who currently volunteers as a sectional support assistant with the Pioneer Troop is leading on setting up the network – “Once a scout always a scout and we want to offer the opportunity for those more senior former members to contribute again in a relaxed capacity to our successful scout group” commented Mr Knights. The aim of “FOBM” is to allow former leaders of the scout movement to give something back by supporting social and fundraising activities. As well as giving them an opportunity to witness scouting in the modern age, an age where the aims and objectives of the scout movement are just as important now as they were 50 years ago. FOBM is open to any former member/leader of the scout movement “old boy” or “old girl” if you would like to find out more please contact Michael Knights by email on daganyafarm@tiscali.co.uk We are starting our search with asking – do you recognise the boys pictured – 1st Fressingfield Cubs and Scouts on camp in 1923? Stradbroke Local History Group Village Archive SLHG have collected the village archive over the past 14 years but on the sale of The Priory it is necessary for the archive to move elsewhere. It is proposed that part of the collection remains in the village under licence and a submission has been accepted by The Court house and Library Trust for their inclusion. The remaining documents we hope to house at The Suffolk Records Office where they can be stored and cared for correctly. SLHG are in contact with them for help and advice. This collection only exists through the generosity of donors and we would not wish to include their donation against their wishes. To this end we ask that any donor who is not happy with the above contact Ann Readman at Ann Readman The Priory, Doctors Lane, IP21 5HU. Thank you.

Forthcoming Events

Leisure & Learning New term for adult classes starts soon! The new brochure for the year’s adult leisure and learning classes for 2013-14 has just been produced, and should be through your door during the last week of August. This year it will be delivered to nearly 42,000 homes in the area, and will include a range of Saturday workshops during October. Should you miss out on your copy, then it’s available via the website www.coastalleisurelearning.co.uk , or telephone the office on 01728 833171. Coastal Leisure Learning community interest company has just completed our second year of producing these classes as a continuation of the service which used to be provided by local high schools, and we're pleased to be able to offer an even bigger range of classes this year. We’re very excited to be able to reintroduce a range of daytime classes in addition to the regular evenings and hope this will enable more of you who prefer to attend in daylight hours the chance to take up or continue a hobby or interest. We are offering classes in Theberton, Melton, Framlingham, Leiston, Saxmundham, Stradbroke and Eye in a variety of areas of learning and hope you’ll find something you’ll want to do. Sian Hart

Stradbroke High School Classic Car/Bike Show The Friends of Stradbroke High School are once again organising a day out surrounded by old cars. Far from a trip to the scrap yard it’s a date celebrating the glorious past when cars were cars, not computers on wheels, when you had to drive them, not push a few buttons, when you could look under the bonnet and recognise the parts, not scratch your head and wonder what all the bits are, and when you could actually mend them, not spend a fortune on diagnostic-plug-in-digitally-enhanced boxes of tricks. What’s more they look good too. At our last Classic Car event we had 51 cars on display at the school, including some very expensive and exotic dream cars plus some lovable cars from the sixties, most of which have become collectable. This year it will be bigger and better and will include motorcycles as well. There will be food, drink, and craft stalls. There will be a charge to enter - £3 adults, £2 concessions, children are free. Show cars are obviously free to enter. Bring the family and make a day of it. Steph Whatling

The Endeavour Card There is a new initiative from Suffolk County Council that will benefit all young people in the 16-19 age bracket. The Suffolk Foundation has new name The Suffolk Foundation is pleased to announce its new name: Suffolk Community Foundation. This change has been made to strengthen its link to UK Community Foundations, the umbrella body that represents all 54 independent community foundations across the UK. Since the first community foundation was created in the UK in 1975, community foundations have had one shared objective: to help build thriving communities. They do this by working with philanthropists who invest in the communities that they love and care for, and they connect them to local people who are passionate about making positive change happen. The retiring Chairman of The Suffolk Foundation, David Sheepshanks has recently taken up the position of Chairman of UK Community Foundations. New Chairman James Buckle commented “We are very proud to be Suffolk’s community foundation and part of this national philanthropic movement and continue to work closely with other community foundations across the country to inspire community based philanthropy. In recent years the reputation of community foundations has grown and this is sure to carry on into the future.” Elizabeth Stephenson, Marketing Co-ordinator

Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre's entrant in Ride London-Surrey 100 This August, London will host what is billed to be the biggest & best celebration of cycling the UK has ever seen and Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre's very own Carolyn Hatton will be taking part! Part of the weekend is the inaugural Ride London-Surrey 100. Over 20,000 cyclists will be tackling the 100 mile route which starts at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (this will be the first sporting event at the park since the 2012 Games). Taking in much of the Olympic road race route, 10 London Boroughs and the hills of Surrey, the ride finishes on The Mall. Carolyn considers herself extremely privileged to have secured a place in this inaugural event through the ballot. So much so that she has decided to use her good fortune to raise money for charity. Continuing on last year's theme where she raised over £2700 for SANE she has again chosen a mental health charity. This time however she is supporting Mind. You can make a donation to Mind at her Virgin Money Giving page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ CarolynHatton and follow the story of her training in her blog at http://competitivemum.tumblr.com Claire James

Memories of My Days in Stradbroke from 1909 to 1923 by Claude Rush. These detailed memories of Stradbroke have recently come to light amongst the Village Archive material saved and stored for many years by Geoffey Smith. They were written in 1964 while Claude was living in retirement in Felixstowe and fortunately he was blessed with a very good memory for names and events. He was not quite six years old when he moved into the village in 1909. It is intended to publish a selection of his memories month by month in the magazine and then later to place it all on the Stradbroke Website. Thanks are due to Dorothy Readman who kindly retyped the whole manuscript into a modern format. Part 7 Snow on the ground provided great fun, not only snowballing each other but passers-by from the playground. One ‘annual’ was poor old Tom Whatling with his white beard, black felt hat, corduroys with ‘Elijahs, Tom well on into years. He lived in a red brick cottage just the Church side of the school and had to pass the school on his way to and from Grove Farm where he worked. We always waited for him. The first volley would result in verbal instructions to us. The next ball would send Tom running down the road into the gate of the playground and part of the way up to the school. That was usually enough; we had by then dispersed sufficiently so that Tom could get away without more shots, but on one occasion he ran us right into school, his big hobnailed boots banging on the floor as he ran halfway down the room, shouting – and with his hat on – hat on in school! Once I took a mouth organ to school, I was in about Standard 5, well down the big room. I bent over and down beside my desk during some quiet part of a lesson and put my lips to the instrument. Then, with the faintest breathing I produced the faintest notes which only the children near me could hear. But one of the boys nipped my bottom as it was stuck up there higher than my head and the ‘Oh!’ that should have been was a strong Doh-me-sohdoh chord through the mouth organ! I think that that may well be one of the times when I had the cane. At one time, if we had behaved ourselves previously the higher standards (6, 7 and ex-7) were grouped together in the big room for the last lesson on Fridays – a spelling bee. Miss Frampton was in charge of this. She called upon children at random to ask another child to spell a word. On one occasion a boy who may well be still living in Stradbroke asked,‘How do you spell Cryptoconcoidsyphonostermater?’ I wonder where he got it from and why I still remember it after just on 50 years! Punishment was not by cane only. We had ‘lines’ to write on our slates, e.g. ‘I must not be late for school’ 50 or 100 times, or made to stand on a form at the east end of the big room, with our hands on our heads, facing the classes, for periods which seemed so long, our arms aching so much. Also, we were put in the corner behind the cane cupboard with our faces to the wall. (It was dangerous to try to peep out!) On one such occasion I was put in position during the afternoon. There I stood listening to what was going on in class, to the children going out to play, and then back in again for more lessons. I could see nothing but the side of the cupboard and the bricks in the wall a few inches from my face. Time went on and the school went home – I heard the children’s shouts die away across the playground and along the road. All was quiet and I peeped round the corner of the cupboard. There sat G H Frampton writing at his desk, so I resumed normal position. Then I heard the cleaner, Harper, was it Charlie Harper?, an old man (old to me then, anyhow) moving desks and sweeping the floor at the other end of the room, so I peeped again – G H F still writing. Back I went right into the corner and resigned myself to await the order to go. In due course the desk moving and sweeping got much nearer until the broom sent a swirl of dust past the cupboard and right into the corner. I coughed or sneezed and Harper then passed the front of the cupboard and either saw or heard me. ‘What are yew a-dewin on here?’ in loud voice said he. At first I answered by signs, then Harper said, ‘But he ha’ bin gone hours’ so out of my corner and home like a hare I went. G H F had completely forgotten that he had sent me to the corner. I seemed to have been there for hours and I daresay I had – perhaps 2 ½. Harper lived in a cottage with a coloured glass window in its front door next to what is now called The Chantry, next to the Churchyard. He was a cripple and walked with two sticks, seldom seen on the road except between his house and the school – in fact I cannot recall any occasion, apart from the periodical visit to Ted Goshawk in Church Street to have his hair cut. But for hours daily he stood on the south west corner of the Courthouse. There was a wooden post there, placed so that horse-drawn cart wheels should not damage the brickwork of the building when rounding the corner. Harper used to lean against this post, his two sticks in his hands. I was a somewhat daring youth, full of monkey tricks. I half lived on a bicycle and could ride one through the eye of a needle. Coming up Queen Street one day to turn ‘Harper’s’ corner to go home to the police station I found Harper looking directly away from my direction. I went past him like a flash within an inch of him. He shouted, but I disappeared like a streak. However, the next time we met he said, ‘Now look here young feller, if yew cum paast me ‘ny more like that there, I’ll tap ye int’ the backside with this here.’ ‘This here’ held out to see, was the stick in his right hand and on it was a thick iron ferrule as big as a 12 bore cartridge. Stradbroke Cricket Club Natures ability to balance out the seasons has seen wall to wall sunshine and, parched conditions, perfect cricket weather! The Vikings continue to involve themselves in close matches. Having posted an inadequate 122 against Sudbourne Hall, they almost pulled off a win thanks to Liam Smith(3 for 25) & Ian Cattermole(3 for 39). Leaders Tendring were too strong despite 4 for 61 from James Gilbee. Josh Franklin-Mann(60)& Smith(54) brought some respectability. Woodbridge were put to the sword in the heat by Marcus Marvell(124) & David Allum(94) who put on 201 of the total of 319 for 5, which proved enough. The game at Easton went to the last over.. Defending 199 (Michael Hugman 41, Smith 34) followed by a 56 run stand for the 9 wicket by Tom Hargrave(18) & Patrick Mills(33). It was not quite enough. The A Team flirt with relegation. Scoring just 121 at leaders Mellis (Hugman 39, Matt Wise 25, Smith 24) would never be enough, but it was a different story at 2 place Wortham. Dan Tompkins 47, Owen Morgan 43, Alan Barker 38,Wise 36, set a target of 229. Morgan 3 for 31 & Billy Freeman 3 for 48 hustled out the home side. The youth matches have been symptomatic of what is happening not just at Stradbroke. Youngster just seem not to want to play cricket. Membership numbers are down, matches are being conceded, schools do not encourage sport to be played. Maybe the Ashes will rekindle the fire? Finally, the postponed Village Treasure Hunt will now be held on Friday 2 August from 6pm at the Sports Pavilion. Cash prizes to the winners. Its fun, its healthy, its environmentally friendly. Keep supporting your Cricket Club. Michael Hugman th

Stradbroke Gardeners’ & Association Newsletter Stradbroke Gardeners' and Allotment Association have decided to write an article for the parish magazine, the idea is to encourage the growing and use of fresh home grown produce. Each month we will offer tips and advice for growing your own food as well as a selection of seasonal recipes, some of which may have never seen the light of day before. The information we pass on will be relevant to the time of year, and will be from the past experience and previous failings of our own new and old gardeners. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions, advice or recipes you would like to add. The following recipes are from Dorothy and Mary, it is probably a little early for apples but by the time you read this Discovery apples may well be ready, although Dorothy recommends using Bramleys for best results. MR PENNY’S APPLE CHUTNEY 3 lbs apples, peeled and cut up - 700g/1 ½ lbs brown sugar/Demerara sugar - 454g/1 lb Sultanas/dates - 3 Onions, chopped - 4ozs crystallized ginger or 1 oz ground ginger 1 tablespoon salt - 3 cloves garlic - 1 pint vinegar. Boil together for half an hour and pour into warmed jars (approximately 6 jars). Mary's recipe exactly fits the bill for the type of thing we hope to offer, it's quick and easy, uses modern fangled devises, and according to Mary even tastes Yummy. BOILED BEETROOT To boil fresh beets in the microwave I found this quick and easy method of cooking beetroot. I remember my mum cooking loads of beetroot that my dad had pulled from the garden. Not only did the kitchen smell of boiled beets for days, but they always managed to stain everything that came close to them including me. I love beetroot, and now that I have grown them on my plot, I would like to share an easy way to cook them. My mum now at the grand age of 84 does it this way too. Yes, it’s in the microwave. Of course you need to have one otherwise stick with the traditional way of boiling them. Here is how to do it. - Cut the prepared beets into quarters. Place them in a microwavable bowl. Space the beets evenly on the plate or in the bowl. Add one inch of water. Cover the bowl with a plate or drape it with a damp paper towel. Microwave one beet on full power about 7 minutes, depending on the beet’s size. Add 2 minutes for each additional beet. Turn the beets over 180 degrees halfway through the cooking unless you have a rotating tray. Leave the plate or paper towel in place for 4 minutes. The beets will continue to cook during the rest period. Cool and peel. You can microwave small to medium-size fresh beets whole, without cutting them. Make sure you prick them first to let any steam out. You can use approximately the same timing, but make sure to turn the beets around once or twice from side to side so that they cook through evenly. To cook three medium size beets in the microwave you need from 12 to 15 min. Press the blade of the knife against the beet to see if it is soft. Cool and peel. Brilliant, not only quick and easy and saves you spending hours boiling them, but it keeps in all the main nutrients and vitamins that are healthy for you. Forget the old traditional method for once and give it a try. Yummy! TIPS July has been very hot and dry, if you are going away move your pots to a shady spot, place trays under them to collect the water, and ask a neighbour to keep an eye on them. Other ways to save water are, mulching under trees and hedges, grass can be used as well as compost and bark. Water in the mornings and evenings to avoid evaporation, and only water plants that require it, a lot of plants once established will tolerate periods of dry weather. A good soaking once in a while is much better than little amounts of water every day. Don't be too concerned if you grass goes brown, grass will green up again once the rain comes, watering lawns is a real waste of water, if you want the grass to stay green don't cut too short throughout the summer. We will be having various events coming up in late summer, on the last Saturday in August (31st) there will be an allotment produce and cake market in the village from 9am till 12, look out for posters. We also plan to have a craft day and demonstrations up at the allotments in September, this will include how to make sloe and raspberry gin, what to do with gluts of produce, and ideas for presents at Christmas. If you would like to join the Stradbroke Allotment and Gardeners' Association or would like to put your name down for an allotment and join our wonderful allotment community, please contact the club secretary: Helen Luke Heydon Pleasance on 01379 388253.

Before becoming an MP, I was proud to work as a full-time NHS hospital doctor, sometimes spending more than 100 hours a week looking after my patients. Politics is about building communities and improving people’s lives, and I firmly believe we need more MPs in Parliament who have worked in the real world. It is my lived experiences, as a doctor, which bring outside experience into Parliament, and help to keep me grounded in looking after the interests of my constituents. As a Government Health Minister, I still continue to work on a part time basis as an NHS hospital doctor, and also privileged to now have a say in how our health and care services are run. It is our NHS’s 65th birthday, a good time to reflect on how we can continue to deliver a health service which is world class. As an NHS hospital doctor, I believe in the underlying principle that NHS services and treatment should be available to everyone, regardless of where they happen to live. Since it was established in 1948, one of the underlying principles of our NHS has always been to give people in need of medical help and treatment the best level of care available, regardless of their ability to pay. Our doctors, nurses, surgeons and all of the hardworking frontline staff who dedicate their lives to our NHS are the unsung heroes who put this principle into practice every day, by caring for their patients. The big challenge for the future, both in human and financial terms is how we must provide more personalised and joined up care for the growing numbers of people with disabilities and complex medical needs like dementia and heart disease, in particular the frail elderly. For decades, vulnerable older people and their families often find themselves confronted by barriers that exist between local health providers and care services. This lack of integrated care can lead to unnecessary hospital admissions which are both costly to the NHS and distressing for older patients. Working on the wards I have seen at first-hand people admitted to hospital with a condition known as ‘acopia’. Acopia is a medical term that applies to people who are admitted to hospital because they are not properly supported and unable to cope at home. This is clearly unacceptable. What is needed is closer working between GPs, hospitals and local social care to better support people in their own homes and communities. If we are to ensure that older patients are cared for with compassion, respect and dignity, we need to move towards a healthcare service that is locallyfocussed and tailored to individual people’s needs, and from April this year, the Government has taken big steps towards making this happen with the setting up of local Health and Wellbeing Boards. Our NHS has had a strong and proud first 65 years. If we continue to meet the challenge of investing in giving each and every child the very best start in life and continue to transform care for the frail and elderly then I am sure that our NHS will continue to be the envy of the world for another 65 years. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems.
