STRADBROKE INTER-VILLAGE GAMES CHAMPIONS 2011
This weekend Stradbroke won the Inter-Village Games! This local version of the Olympics (only harder fought) featured races as well as some more unusual events such as welly throwing, wheel barrow races and my personal favourite - human table top football! In a close fought contest Stradbroke ended with 289 points beating off Badingham on 275, Laxfield on 255, Fressingfield on 251, Dennington on 235 and Mendham with 199. All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The 12 Gardens which were opened in June were admired by several visitors. Thank you all for opening yours, we raised £332.62 with the raffle and teas, and also thanks to all who helped in any way. The Village Show is on 30th July when your potatoes will be weighed in the Community Centre. Schedules are available at the PO. Do enter and make the show a success for the visitors to admire. On Aug 6th we have the Garage Trail around the village. Maps on sale at mine, Pump Cottage, 50p, on the day. We have at least 8 booked already at £5 a pitch. More are needed – you keep your sales money. Hopefully coffee can be obtained, so make a move around the village, 9am-1 pm. Thanks for you raffle prizes and support. Dear Friends, For many of you, this magazine will arrive at your house before some of us take our entries to the Community Centre for the Village Show on Saturday, 30th July. I do hope that it brings a reminder for you to go along Wilby Road in the afternoon, between 1.45 and 4.15 pm, to look at all that is displayed there, and to share in the fund raising happening in the hall. A week later, on Saturday, 6th August, a Garage Sale programme, available from Mary Ellis at Pump Cottage, Queen Street, will direct you up many of the village roads and streets. Sunday, 21st August, is my birthday, and you are invited to come down Doctors Lane to The Rectory garden between 3.30 and 5.30 pm for Afternoon Tea. Donations will be most gratefully received towards the cost of the Flower Festival in the church from Wednesday 21st to Tuesday 27th September. We open at 7.30 pm on the Wednesday evening with an Organ Recital, and close at 6.00pm the following Tuesday. We are celebrating the 400th anniversary of the publication in 1611 of the King James Bible, known as the Authorised Version, and the 90th birthday of the Royal British Legion, both nationally and in Stradbroke. Services and events will fill out the days and evenings – watch out for the full programme early in September, and do, please, bring me your offers of help and requests for more information. It is my duty and responsibility to keep before you the four churches where I am the Rector, and to encourage you to visit them, both on Sundays for services, and whenever you would like the special experience that is going into a church that has stood for many hundreds of years as a focus for prayer, praise, hope and thanks, and local history. You can enter into all this in a variety of different places if you go out on the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Bike Ride between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Saturday, 10th September. Digital TV Switch Over: You may be aware that this is to take place in November 2011. If you have any questions about this Stuart Gemmill is the person to ask. He can be reached on 01379 384518. Please do not hesitate to ask for help but be aware that there are dishonest people about who are not part of the Switch Over Team so DO NOT admit anyone to your home just because they say there are there to help you. Library: Following further meetings at SCC to consider the consultation document and public responses proposals will be put to SCC Cabinet on 19th July on the future funding, management and provision of the libraries in the county. Street Lighting: Following the questionnaire in last month’s edition of the magazine the topic was debated at this meeting. Although the response to the questionnaire was low Councillors took all the responses into consideration and following an in-depth discussion voted for the lighting system to remain as it is. Noise Nuisance – Peacocks This problem has again been brought to the notice of the Parish Council. Strenuous efforts have been made to effect the removal of these birds but no agency appears to wish to assist. The Council resolved to do its upmost to resolve the problem, although this may take some time. A further article features elsewhere in this edition of the magazine but in case readers miss that PLEASE DO NOT FEED THESE BIRDS. Magazine Printing: Colin Jones has resigned from the magazine team so, yet again, there is a vacancy for someone to coordinate the printing each month. Colin did a great job of streamlining the process and will be much missed. If you are prepared to give some time each month to help produce the magazine then please contact the Clerk. Life in the Legion The new Suffolk County RBL Welfare Officer Tony Maidment was the guest speaker at The July Meeting which was attended by 18 members and guests. Mr Maidment gave an interesting talk on County Welfare Work and I thanked him on behalf of everybody present. I also welcomed Ron Sanders the President of the Witham (Essex) Branch to the meeting. It was reported that the Horham Bygones had been very successful, and that £240.08 had been collected for The Poppy Appeal. £184 had been collected for The County Benevolent Fund at The Horham Farm Sale by kind invitation of Brian and Joyce Cooper by members John Graham, Joyce Cooper, Albert Siggers, Alan King and Tom Moore who had attended. Simon Harrison reported that he had so far collected £650 in sponsorship for The Pedal to Paris in September. Jeremy Higgins read out the monthly treasurer’s report, and I gave a report on the H Group Meeting that had been hosted by Fressingfield Branch. A very enjoyable Coffee Morning was held in good weather at The Chantry hosted by Jeremy and Anne Higgins, and a total of £299 was raised for Branch Funds. My thanks to all those who helped on the day. There is no meeting in August but members are being invited to Joyce Cooper’s house in Gorleston on the 4th August. The next monthly meeting will be on Thursday 1st September at The Laxfield King’s Head starting at 11.30am when the guest speaker will be Lieutenant General Sir Christopher Wallace KCB DL. Stradbroke Branch are hosting the next H Group Meeting on Thursday 8th September at 7 for 7.30 pm at The Stradbroke Queens Head. Members please attend if you can. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.
Womens Institute The Annual Garden Party Once again the English Summer let us down, but did it matter? Not a bit of it. Our Garden Party was to have been held in Don and Carol Darling’s beautiful garden at Frythe Barn, but due to the rain they very kindly invited us to hold our party inside their home, and we cannot thank them enough for their generosity. Fortunately the rain ceased and enabled members to enjoy the garden before sitting down to a wonderful buffet in the truly beautiful surroundings. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and our thanks again to Don and Carol. Our next meeting is on August 11th 7.30pm.in the Community Centre, when our speaker is Denise Hammond-Webb, with her talk ‘Bakery to Banham Zoo.’ Gill Bird.

Stradbroke Primary School visit us at www.stradbrokevc.suffolk.sch.uk As a fantastic year comes to an end at Stradbroke Primary our pupils reflect on their favourite moments: Class 1 We really enjoyed making kites and visiting Easton Park Farm. We loved it even though we were a bit scared at first of the goats! We liked going to Norwich Castle and we went in the dungeons. That was the most exciting bit. Teddy Chew and Olly Keeble Class 2 We really enjoyed Sport’s Day this year, we had really good fun. On Abstract Art day we got to make big canvas paintings in the style of Kandinsky. We loved going to Inspire and the Dinosaur Park this year. Cherry Mallinson-Beedie and Heidi Bevan. Class 3 The best bit of this year was going to Minsmere Nature Reserve with Mr. Plowman. We saw a flamingo called Fiona who had escaped from a zoo! We went pond dipping and had the best time. I loved learning about the different birds. Bradley Bennett Class 4 We loved the London trip this year- we went to see a 62 gun salute at Tower Hill, we got to go in the VIP area! It was cool. We loved performing in our school play “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. This year has been a very good year, we have had so much fun. Courtney Chilvers and Alex Pierce-Saunderson. Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College Women’s Institute Tour and Tea During a hugely successful Celebration Week, more than twenty ladies from the Stradbroke and Worlingworth Women’s Institutes joined us for an accompanied tour of our school during lesson time, to see the pupils at work and to see all our superb facilities. The ladies were in awe of our top specification high technology equipment and of the pupils’ fabulous artwork that adorns every available space, not to mention the six tennis courts with the newly laid multi use games surface. We really do have a great school and are very proud of it! Following the tour we all went to the music room and were greeted by the school choir and pupils serving non-alcoholic bubbly. Mr Williams tinkled on the ivories and everyone enjoyed a lovely cup of tea and wonderful cup cakes supplied by Mrs Cleverley of Cleverley Made Cakes. Overall, the afternoon was a great success! It was nice to meet local people who do not usually enter the school and to see their positive reactions towards all we have and all that we do. Next year we are planning an even bigger event, so that we can invite Women’s Institute members from around the region. Mrs K Cheyne, Director of Learning

Ist Stradbroke Guides It’s gone so fast and I can hardly believe we are at the close of the first year of the 1st Stradbroke Guides 2010-2011. We will be back in September, but before we say Goodbye for the summer, we will be going out with a bang at the Hautbois Guide Camp! The girls will be putting up tents, cooking their own food and carrying out lots of fantastic activities including; Canoeing, Raft Building and Abseiling! The girls have worked really hard in their patrols, completing Go For Its of their own choice and doing all the work themselves. Since September, the four patrols have gone from a group of girls who started out together to four teams that can create their own tasks and get the results they want. We are really proud of what they have achieved and we are really looking forward to the new adventures that September 2011 will inevitably bring. Festifull Thanks! The organisers would like to say a very big "thank you" to everyone who helped make the weekend of 23rd/24th July a successful and enjoyable event. We also congratulate all the members of the Stradbroke Team who took part in the games on Sunday and during the preceding week resulting in Stradbroke winning the trophy for the 2nd time in 3years. We would like to celebrate the success of our first "Festifull" by inviting all those who helped make it a success to join us in an informal BBQ at the community centre on Friday Aug 5th at 6:30pm. There are too many to mention by name but this includes sponsors, all the IVG participants, car washers, drinks & refreshment people, judges, gofers, car park attendants, ticket and raffle sellers, etc... Peacocks! Many of you are aware that there are a number of peacocks roaming Stradbroke. Whilst they are attractive to look at, they are causing a major nuisance and considerable distress to many residents. This includes being woken at four in the morning, slipping on their excrement and having plants destroyed. We are trying to find a solution and re-home them to a more appropriate location. In the meantime, if you have a nest with eggs in your garden please could you dispose of both the nest and eggs. Friends of All Saints Church We held our AGM on Wednesday,13th July in the Community Centre. Eight fund raising events had been held during the year, and the Treasurer reported that we made £2,315.11 which was just under half the amount of the previous year. £1,000 was contributed towards the cost of insurance at All Saints Church, and we had £11,699.47 in the Bank. The officers for this year are - Margaret Jenkins (Chairman), Margaret Streeter (ViceChairman and Publicity), Carol Darling (Treasurer), Toni Wisbey (Secretary) and Dianne Maynard (Membership Secretary). On Saturday, 16th July we held our Summer Lunch in The Community Centre, not in the garden at Frythe Barn as planned, but with the visual effects and the music from Don and David, and the wonderful food prepared and served by the Committee, and auctioneer Roger providing after-lunch entertainment, we made £2054.09. Thank you to everyone who came along, and to all those who helped in any way to make this event such fun and so profitable! Digital TV Switchover - Police Advice! Residents in Suffolk are being urged to be vigilant against distraction burglars offering to help equip them for the 'digital TV takeover'. Wednesday the 6 July was digital switch over day for many parts of Suffolk, with the final phase of the switch over for the area on 9 Nov 2011. The Safe and Sound group in Suffolk, which includes partners such as Suffolk Constabulary and Suffolk Trading Standards, are warning people not to fall victim to distraction burglars or rogue traders who could use the switchover to digital TV as a means of gaining access to people's homes. A Digital Help Scheme has been set up for those who need the most assistance to switch to digital including those aged 75 and over and residents who are registered blind or partial sighted or in receipt of certain benefits. The Help Scheme will explain digital TV clearly and simply, the options available and will install what is needed in the home. Police and partner agencies are urging residents to be vigilant and check the identity of anyone calling. Residents should note that installers registered with the government help scheme will not call without an appointment and will carry a Help Scheme ID. Chair of the Safe and Sound group David Kane said: "We would ask residents to look out for possible rogue traders visiting an elderly neighbour or relative who could be vulnerable and check the identification of people calling at the front door." If you have any caller claiming to be from the Help Scheme or offering assistance to set up your TV and you haven't made an appointment then refuse entry to your property and dial 999 and ask for police assistance immediately. Catalytic Converter Marking Mid Suffolk North Safer Neighbourhood Team are intending to run another catalytic convertor marking day on Saturday 6th August 2011 from 10 am to about 3.30 pm. This will again take place at Barley Green Garage on the B1117 Laxfield Road at Stradbroke. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone to get their catalytic convertor security marked for free to help prevent it from being stolen. Stradbroke Allotments Meeting Wednesday August 31st 2011 at 7.30 p.m. at Stradbroke Community Centre The Parish Council has been offered a lease on a suitable piece of land for the allotments in Stradbroke. We now need to establish how much firm interest there is and how many plots will be required. If there is sufficient support, the Parish Council will begin the negotiations to lease this land and consider the formation of an Allotment Association. Stradbroke Summer Walks 2011 A Longer Walk: Stradbroke to he Source of the River Waveney Sunday August 7th at 9.00 a.m. Join us for an 20 mile guided linear walk from Stradbroke to the Source of the River Waveney on Redgrave Fen. St Elizabeth Hospice Cyclists are asked to get into gear for a fundraising ride called On Your Bike! , in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. Whether you are a serious cyclist or want a family ride out, you will be welcome to take part in the event on Sunday 11th September. There are three distances and all routes start and finish in the beautiful grounds of the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook. Choose from: 75 mile challenge – For those cyclists wishing to push themselves; 50 mile challenge – An intermediate challenge taking in picturesque countryside and village; 11.5 mile – A fun ride for all ages and abilities. Cyclists are asked to raise sponsorship and all proceeds will help the Hospice, an independent charity which costs £6m a year to run, provide services free of charge for patients throughout Suffolk as well as support for their relatives and carers. Suffolk Age UK—Opening Doors Charity wants to meet older gay and transgender people A local charity, Age UK Suffolk, is running a one year project called Opening Doors. It is aimed at finding out the issues and needs of older people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (the shorthand is LGB&T) and those who care for them. The charity’s project worker, Lois Peachey, wants to meet more OLGB&T people in Suffolk to listen to and learn from them. Many people still do not feel safe to be open about being LGB or T because, in spite of equalities legislation, there are still negative and, sometimes, hostile attitudes towards them. Daphne Savage, Chief Executive of Age UK Suffolk, said “We believe this is probably worse for older people as they have lived through the years when homosexuality was a criminal offence (for men) and even classified as a mental illness. So when they experience some of the problems that can come in later life - especially when needing care at home, a stay in hospital, a move to sheltered housing or a care home – older people can be faced with ‘coming out’ at a time when they feel least able to cope with possible prejudice or discrimination.” Whilst transgender people have historically joined with LGB people in the fight for rights and recognition, their concerns are not the same, so the charity has set up an LGB and T project. A benefactor has given money to Age UK Suffolk specifically for this purpose and the charity has employed Lois Peachey to work on the project. Lois explained that her role is threefold: (1) to work with the charity and anyone who works with older people to ensure that nothing that they do is unintentionally unfriendly or discriminatory to older LGB&T people; (2) to find, and learn from, older LGB&T people about their concerns and experiences; and (3) to help Age UK Suffolk find ways in which it can respond to what is learned through this project and share it with any organisation or group that works with older people.“Older LGB&T people can contact me in whatever way they feel most comfortable” Lois said, “and I urge them to do so. Stradbroke Badminton Club Further to our previous article regarding the club in the July issue of this magazine, the following advises of our start up date for the new season. Stradbroke Cricket Club A bloke called Noah rang me the other day asking for boat building tips. Whilst supplies of gopher wood are scarce, if the rain doesn’t stop soon, the cricket season will have to be abandoned, or played half way up a mountain. Bizarrely, the flood abated long enough for Stradbroke to host finals day of the James Grigg T20 Cup. Someone is looking over us. Shame was, the Vikings did not qualify for the semi-finals, after four inept performances. However, their wins over Worlingworth & Stowupland were nigh perfectly executed, but it came too late. Walsham won the Cup, but the important cause behind the competition was raising money for the James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust. £720 was made on the day, thanks to generous sponsorship from Greene King, BQP, & Halesworth White Swan, the efforts & support of members of the cricket club, and the village, added to the £1000 raised at the three weeks of preliminary matches. The clubs fund raising is more modest, but a village treasure hunt organized by Don Lummis, was enjoyed by over 50 people wandering the streets. Modesty forbids me from publishing the winners. On the field of play, the weather has interrupted the flow of all our teams, with the exception of the Under 15s who, having won 9 of their 10 fixtures, look certain to win the North Suffolk League. While many neighbouring clubs seem to struggle with numbers of junior members, Stradbroke go from strength to strength, supplemented by an intake from local Primary Schools through the Chance to Shine scheme, which has now completed it’s 5 year programme. Stradbroke and District Bowls Club We had a low turnout for our coffee morning on the 9th July, but we were pleased to see all those people who did come. A profit of £l53.37 was made, which again, goes into our funds for the upkeep of the green. The Les Parker Cup tournament was played in July, up to the semi finals, the final will be played as soon as it can be arranged. Our next club tournament, the Ray Biggs cup, has had to be re-arranged, and will now take place on Saturday, 6th August at 5.30 p.m. Open all all club members. Stradbroke Youth Football Club We are entering four teams in the Ipswich & South Suffolk League for the coming season which kicks off on September 11th. The teams are U18 (new), U14, U12 and U10 (new) and we are busy getting everything together ready for the off. With four teams we need more pitches and SBEC have arranged for the U12s to have a pitch on their grounds which has saved the day, many thanks to SBEC! The leagues are becoming more popular with more teams entering which means more games and more activity. New strips are on their way for the two new teams as well as extra training equipment and footballs…it doesn’t come cheap and along with our fund raising activities we are looking for sponsors or contributions to help keep the momentum going. If anyone can help please let Don or myself know. The playing strength can always be added to and there are still places available for all of the teams for anyone who would like to join us. In particular, the new U10s, who play 7 a side, urgently need a few more players in order to have a full squad. If you know of anyone, boy or girl, who wants to play football for Stradbroke please come along to our training evening – details below. We also want to bring in a few more coaches/trainers to the club, so come on you footballers and you ex-footballers; put your experience to good use by passing on your skills to a new generation. Come and help us build for the future! Training is underway at the Recreation Ground with the U18s on Wednesday evenings starting at 5.30 and the U10s, U12s and U14s on Thursday evenings at 5.30 – 7.00pm. Gardeners Notes Good news! At last allotments are coming to Stradbroke. A local landowner has very generously agreed to allow a good accessible piece of land to be used. Gerald Jenkins and Peter Smith, on behalf of the Parish Council, are going to get the ball rolling and are currently looking into grants etc. I have had a chat with Gerald and he is very keen to do it all properly including rabbit proof fencing the site and providing water supply. There is to be a meeting which I believe will be on the 31st August in the Community Centre for anyone who is interested to come along and hear about the project. Please come alongto offer any suggestions to get the best of what will be yet another fantasticfacility in the village. The last couple of months have been rather mixed weather wise, usually that would be a bad thing but with the dry spring we had the mixture of wet and warm has been perfect for establishing plants. Farmers should be a it happier as the rain came just in time, yields will be down but not as bad as they could have been. We just need a dry August and everyone will be happy. Generally speaking the soil around Stradbroke is a clay type, I travel around and work on gardens of many types of soil and this year the clay soil seems to have come off best so far as it held on to the moisture for longer earlier in the year. It is not often that it is good to have clay but once improved with organic matter it does make for an excellent base material. Most people seem to be aware of what their soil acidity is, more often than not the soil in Stradbroke is neutral to alkaline, this tends to go for most of the clay over to the A12, the lighter soil beyond the A12 is a bit more varied. In an ideal world you would want a soil that is slightly acid to grow the biggest variety of things. I'm regularly asked why camellias and rhododendrons don't do well and it is because they need acid conditions, so growing in a pot with ericaecous compost is the best bet, remembering to water well during the summer as that is when next year's flower buds develop (only water with rain water as tap water is alkaline). Hydrangeas are also affected by the levels of acidity, but unlike camellias and rhododendrons they will grow happily in both situations but it just changes the colour of the flowers. They are referred to as an indicator plant, if ever I visit a garden and they have coloured hydrangeas I can immediately tell what soil type they have. A bright blue means a high acidity and a dirty pink means alkaline, and shades inbetween tell me how high or low it is. The White Hydrangeas, which as it happens are my favourite aren't affected and therefore make the perfect choice on out soils in this area. Some good varieties are Hydrangea macrophylla 'Lanarth White', a beautiful lacy flower, Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle', large rounded creamy white flower heads, Hydrangea quercifolia, what is called the oak leaved Hydrangea with lacy cone shaped flowers and finally Hydrangea paniculata, there are loads of good paniculatas, nearly all strong growers. all these Hydrangeas are looking good now and this year have been a bit earlier than normal. Other plants looking good are saxifraga 'Wada' which has great ruffled foliage and soft sprays of white flowers that appear late summer, all of the Echinacea are lovely flowers with some having glorious purple tones, and a plant I have only recently started to use is Rehmannia elata, known as the chinese foxglove, it is about 50cm tall with rosy purple flowers that resemble the foxglove, it prefers a sheltered sunny position and seems to flower throughout the summer. Finally there is currently a lot about the decline of various butterflies and moths with surveys being done to find how bad the problem is. I haven't seen as many this year but have already seen a couple of hummingbird hawk moths which must have arrived early with the hot weather. Planting butterfly friendly plants and leaving wild patches for nettles is all beneficial. Happy gardening, Luke

Last month, I was elected by an overwhelming majority of my Parliamentary colleagues to the Health Select Committee. The Committee examines the policy, administration and expenditure of the Department of Health and its associated bodies, and it is vital that we have MPs representing us in Parliament who have real life experience of working in frontline public services. Since arriving in Parliament I have used my knowledge of healthcare issues to contribute in health questions on issues such as community hospitals and improved integration of health and social care for older people in rural communities. It is important to have people on Parliamentary Select Committees with real experience and knowledge of what they are trying to scrutinise, and given my strong medical background and my Parliamentary contributions in healthcare debates, I look forward to using my specialist medical knowledge to help improve healthcare in the United Kingdom and particularly for people across Ipswich and Suffolk. Agriculture has always played a vital role in Suffolk, bringing enormous benefits to our countryside and local culture, as well as being a main driver of our local economy. I was therefore delighted to meet with NFU County Chairman Richard Scott and a number of local farmers in Suffolk for a breakfast meeting, to discuss some of the main issues facing local farmers in our county. Following my recent debate in the House of Commons on the challenges facing dairy farmers across the country, and particularly in Suffolk, we discussed the importance of making sure that big supermarkets pay a fair price to local dairy farmers for the milk they produce. Other topics under discussion included how Suffolk’s farming community can help to maintain a thriving and sustainable agricultural sector in our county through good stewardship of the countryside. The importance of biogas technology in generating renewable electricity from environmental waste products was also discussed (and I have subsequently raised this issue in Parliament), along with the Government’s Feed-In Tariffs (FITs) scheme, which pays people for the renewable electricity they produce. It was a fantastic evening and an excellent conclusion to our five years at the school. However, it couldn't have happened without the help and generosity of the owners of the venue - who very kindly let us use it at short notice, after we had two venues fall through- Athelington Hall for providing the catering, the parents who put so much time and effort into organising the event, and everyone that helped and contributed to the evening.
