We meet every Sunday morning at 10.15am. We also meet at 9.30 before the service to pray together. We believe that Jesus died in order to release us from the judgement of God, and being raised from the dead, He has secured eternal life for each and everyone who will put their trust in Him as their personal Lord and Saviour. We enjoy both traditional and lively worship in song and there is every opportunity to meet the Living Lord during our time together. We also hold a lunch on the 2nd Wednesday in the month at 12.30pm. This is called CAMEO where people literally come to meet each other. Many folk from the village come and enjoy good home made food, often followed by a quiz, or singing etc. We occasionally have a guest speaker. It’s good to give We would like once again to thank you for the generosity that you have shown in supporting our quest to give to those who have less than we have, and for those who can have a better quality of life in their suffering by the giving of our money. Over the past couple of months the Beavers and Scouts from Fressingfield met at the church and did a sponsored walk, raising £600.00, and we sent £112.00 to the East Anglian Children Hospice which was raised at our Carols by Candlelight. The teachings of Jesus portray that it is better to give than to receive, and as a church we believe that this is so. We also continue to support Tools with a Mission, and if you still have any old unused tools in the shed, we would be very pleased to receive them, or come and pick them up from you. We have received many knitted vests, and would encourage those who knit to continue to supply these items. Thank you for showing your love for others in this generous way, and may God bless you and fill you with His peace during this coming year. Jackie

Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

The Rectory Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Church Website: www.allsaints-stradbroke. com Dear Friends, Margaret and I did indeed go to Edinburgh last November, and very much enjoyed two days there and the Carol Concert. On the third day, Advent Sunday, we planned to be back home that morning to go to Athelington in the afternoon. Snow had closed the airport, and we returned to Stradbroke after a long train journey on Monday evening. Fortunately I had made all the arrangements for the Service at Athelington, including the choice of a poem, called “Winter” that was read in St Peter’s Church, that exactly matched our experience in Scotland, and as we travelled home. I had found the book of poems, called “Road-Royal” by Alice Hunt Bartlett on a sunny day in Norfolk in August. The title, with its own verses, describes the route from Nazareth to Bethlehem of a child born to be a King, and her seasonal poem set the scene for our slippery progress through the snow to our hotel in the northern capital, and then the journey to Suffolk, with much help and support on the way. I bought the book of poems because I was attracted by the wintry words; three months later they came true for us. (I will put the words of these poems on our website; do visit it to read them and others that I like.) The words that begin our Carol Service, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light… Unto us a child is born…over his kingdom to establish it…” (Isaiah, Ch. 9) look forward to what happened at Bethlehem when the story of God’s loving purposes for his people was renewed with the birth of his son. We will be learning from that story in Lent this year. That season begins on March 9th, Ash Wednesday, with Holy Communion at 10.00 am, and then Coffee in the church, to introduce the Lent Course that continues on the five following Thursdays after the morning service of Holy Communion.I am most grateful to all who decorated the church (and the tower!) with colours and lights, words and music, to brighten our Christmastide, and encourage us to listen to Jesus and the truth of what he says. (The Salvation Army said a big thank you for the Christmas gifts brought to church on December 12th).With all good wishes, David Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning, Thursday, 3rd. NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: 14th February 2011 7.30pm
At the Community Centre
Stradbroke Parish Council
The Parish Pump!
3 members of the public attended the meeting and the Council was informed that the village had been invited to host the Inter Village Games in 2011. It was suggested that the games be held on a Sunday possibly preceded on the Saturday by a village fete and other entertainments that, it was hoped, would bring in people from outside Stradbroke as well as providing an excellent day out for residents. The Parish Council wholeheartedly supported this project. Planning Applications considered: The Council recommended approval for the following applications: 3380/10 Change of use ands works to convert a barn to a single residential dwelling including retention of some works undertaken previously and completion in accordance with revised drawings and accompanying documents. Erection of cart shed garaging. Brooklands Barn, Mill Lane 3843/10 Conversion of barn to dwelling (design revision to [ include single storey extension] to that previously approved under planning permissions 311/05 and 1095/08) land adjacent White House Farm, Queen Street Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the PC last met: The following had planning permission granted: 3679/10 works to 2 x Fraxinus Excelsior, New Street Farmhouse Other Planning Matters: 3659/10 Erection of 2 x chicken sheds and feed bins Land adjacent to Fennings Farm, Pixey Green The above item went before MSDC Planning Committee on 5 Jan 11and the appeal lodged prior to this with the Planning Inspectorate has since been removed
Other Matters: Allotments… proposed sites were still being considered and land owners would be approached. Recycling at the Community Centre...there has been some dumping of rubbish at the recycling point. Please bear in mind that the only items that can be deposited are those for which banks are provided. Do not leave any other items as they will not be collected. If the banks are full when you take your recycling please take it back home and return with it at a later date. Also, do not leave plastic bags and cardboard boxes in the recycling area. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. PLEASE DO NOT leave recycling next to the Dental services in Stradbroke… funding was being sought to ensure the dental service bins outside the becomes permanent after April. If the dental unit continues it will visit once a fortnight but it community centre ! is envisaged that the hours will be extended on that day. Dog Fouling…yet again some dog owners have been taking their animals on to the Playing Field and Fitness Track. Please be aware that dogs are NOT ALLOWED on the Playing Field, Fitness track or in the Community Centre Play Park. It is an offence to allow your dog to foul a public area and fines of £1,000 can be imposed. Recently Trevor has cleared up several piles of dog excrement from the street…this is NOT part of his job so would the owners concerned please do this themselves. There are dog bins in strategic places around the village and it only takes a moment to clean up after your pet. The Clerk has a small quantity of ‘poo bags’ that come at no cost so if you would like some please call. Like all habits it does not take long to become established so perhaps a belated New Year Resolution would not be a bad idea. It would be great to see Stradbroke become a poop free zone!! Elections…elections for the Parish Council will take place on 5th May 2011. If you have wanted to make a difference to your village please give serious thought to throwing your hat into the ring and standing for election. If you have any questions or would like a chat to see Free Dog Poop bags available from the Parish if this is for you please speak to any Councillor or contact the Clerk for more information. Council! JUST ASK! Your village really does need YOU! The next meeting of the Parish Council: 14 February 2011 at 7.30pm Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 01379 384679 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com **please make non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only**

Life in the Legion The Branch continues to be active and since the last report 10 members visited our RBL Home in Cromer (Halsey House) on the 19th November. The Home has been updated at a cost of nearly £6 million, and is now an excellent Hospital with Dementia and Day Care Facilities. We presented the Assistant matron with a Branch Donation for their amenity fund. The visit was followed by our Annual Christmas Carols and Lunch served by Bob Wilson and his team from The Low House and held in The Village Hall in Laxfield. The Rev’d David Streeter gave a Christmas Message and the 27 present sang a Carol that he had composed. Dougie Chittock very kindly came down to accompany us on his keyboard. Branch Welfare Officer Joyce Cooper from Horham put up 18 Decorated Christmas Trees and Poppy Appeal Collecting Boxes around the local area, and her initiative raised a £576 over the Christmas Period. Our many thanks to Joyce for all she did to raise such a large total, and to the various places that had them on their Shop or Reception Counters. The Suffolk County Conference was held on the 15th January at Needham Market Community Centre, and I attended as a County Vice President together with Albert Siggers and Jeremy Higgins. As the Branch Delegate Jeremy was called up to receive a certificate for the runner up in the competition for the most efficient Small Branch in Suffolk. The Conference was well run and we had an excellent keynote Speech by Dr Diana Henderson, who is a Trustee of The Royal British Legion, encouraging us all to maintain the momentum even though we had faced difficulties in 2010. The next meeting is on Thursday February 3rd at The Kings Head Laxfield at 11.30am and the speaker will be Branch Chaplain David Streeter on the subject of ‘Poems’. Members please attend if you are able. A Happy New Year to all our readers. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.
Womens Institute Christmas Dinner. 9th December The evening opened with our new president Mrs. Jennifer Chetwynd welcoming members and their guests to the annual W.I. Christmas Dinner. In her address she thanked David Merrit and Dougie Chittock for their continued help and support during the year, and how it was appreciated by us all. She then presented the Annual Competition Winners Cup to Mrs. Betty Chittock. Formalities over, and with background music from Dougie on his keyboard, festivities began with members and their guests enjoying an excellent three course dinner, followed by mince pies, coffee, chocolates and wine. Now in party mood the games began, and teams soon became engulfed in laughter as they endeavoured to thread string up and down their bodies in quick succession, getting quite strung up in the process, and with some hilarious results. The fun continued with various games using parcels, match boxes and giant playing cards, resulting in some close encounters. Finally the raffle was drawn and the lucky winners were: Peter Chetwynd, Pat Marlow, Ursula Ward, Cyril Knowles, Phyllis Gunn and Toni Wisby. Now we look forward to 2011 - If you would like to come along and join us you would be made most welcome Meeting 13th January The attendance for our first meeting of the year was excellent and our President Mrs. Jennifer Chetwynd welcomed Mrs. Jassie Newton who was making her first visit to our W.I. we hope she enjoyed it and that we will have the pleasure of her company as a member at future meetings. The business of the evening was brought to a close with the Annual Achievement Cup being awarded to Mrs. Dorothy Readman for her work and support to our W.I. and to her considerable achievements at County Headquarters. Then it was on to ‘Naughty but Nice’ as the title suggests not good for the waistline!! If you liked trifle, chocolate pots, meringues chilly Christmas puddings, rum dessert, cherry liqueur and sparkling summer fizz, you were in for a treat, as all these delicious drinks and desserts made by the committee, were served by them to members enjoying the happiest of evenings. A truly great start to our New Year! Gill Bird. Press Officer.
Friends of All Saints Church The gloves and scarves have been put away till next winter, and thank you for turning out on such a freezing night to sing carols for All Saints! The sun is out, the snowdrops are appearing so here goes with our Spring events. A “Brush-Up on your Dance Steps” on Saturday, 19th February, at the Community Centre, 3.00 - 4.30 pm. £2.00 each and the following weekend , Saturday, 26th February, 2.00 -5.00 pm, a “Tea Dance” with a full afternoon tea, and dancing demonstrations, Tickets £8.50 (Available from the Post Office). Come on your own, or with a partner, dressed as you like, be there just to have a lovely home-made tea and watch the dancing! But we do want everyone to come along and make it an afternoon to remember, and the primary reason, as everyone in Stradbroke should know by now, is to raise money for the fabric of our amazing and wonderful Parish Church in Stradbroke. See you there! Also remember - The Friends’ Plant Stall, Cuttings and Sowings, some for yourself and some for the Friends, at the Church Path, on Saturday morning, 30th. April. Margaret Streeter

Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College The Farmers’ Market in Stradbroke is changing for 2011 As you are all aware, the Farmers’ Market at the High School has been running on the first Saturday each month for more than five years. Recently, the number of customers has fallen and so we have decided to rethink the format. Saturday mornings are not the best time for many as they can clash with other weekend activities, plus there are often other village events at this time. There are also seasonal considerations – such as the availability of locally grown fruit and vegetables in February. Instead, therefore, we will run several ‘themed’ events through the year probably held on a weeknight and planned to avoid other village events. These themes are likely to be: Plants and Gardening (Spring) Classic Cars (Summer) Crafts and Gifts (Christmas) In addition, some Cookery evenings. Each event will be promoted separately. As before, the pupils at the High School will be heavily involved in both the organisation and selling of their own products and produce (from Business and Enterprise Lessons). We hope to gear these events to the interests of the local community. We would welcome your ideas so please contact us if you feel you can contribute. lawrie.hammond@sbec.org.uk Lawrie Hammond Business & Enterprise Director
Stradbroke Primary School Happy New Year! First piece of news– we have a new school logo! In the Autumn I consulted our school council who felt the old willow tree logo was outdated. “We don’t even have willow trees any more” one pupil commented. So we took the children’s ideas that we should respect the old logo and have a tree but show adults and pupils too. We then commissioned a new logo to be designed and here it is– an adult supporting a child at the heart of the school (represented by the tree). The school council hope you like our new logo they certainly do! We also must thank Mrs Hargrave for designing our fabulous new website. Take a look at: www.stradbrokevc.suffolk.sch.uk. All staff make contributions to this to ensure we are giving up to date information about the school. Watch out for forthcoming news on our Deputy Head Mrs Walsh’s recent exchange visit to our Partner school in France and Mr Plowman’s attempt to run his second London Marathon (pupils are helping him train during football team practices!) You may also have read in the local press recently about our wonderful Chinese Dragon Dance workshops. Miss Wilbourn has set up an international link with her previous school in Hong Kong. She celebrated the end of a fantastic Class 2 topic on Hong Kong with this event and a Chinese food tasting session. This term the INSPIRE Science centre will be visiting pupils on Thursday 17th of February. There will be a mobile planetarium “the star dome” show for pupils in Key Stage Two. This is a huge inflatable planetarium which has the solar system projected inside it which will be erected in our school hall. It is a great resource to teach pupils about space in a unique and exciting way. All pupils will then have the chance to watch INSPIRE perform a science show called “The Notion of Motion”. We are always looking for innovative ways to teach pupils Scientific concepts and I know that they will really enjoy INSPIRE’s visit. Finally we are delighted to welcome Tiddlywinks to their new base on the grounds of Stradbroke Primary. Tiddlywinks are a private pre-school provider offering sessions for children from 2 and a half years of age. They offer free Government funded sessions for children aged 3 and 4 years old. We will be working closely with Tiddlywinks over the forthcoming year to ensure a really smooth transition for pupils from pre-school to their Reception year. If you would like further information about Tiddlywinks please contact Amanda Havers on 07760573208. Melanie Barrow Headteacher
Stradbroke Guides In view of the enthusiasm by its members, the newly formed Stradbroke Guides made it known that they were in need of financial support. A Stradbroke resident, who is a member of Southwold (Sole Bay) Lions Club, suggested to the Guide Leaders - Candice Dudley and Georgina Westmancott - that they supplied more information. Thus, a dossier was prepared and presented to Lion President Paul Carter, Lion John Beckett, secretary and members of the Southwold Lions Club. It was agreed, that although Stradbroke was outside the Southwold area, a donation of £630 would be made to the Guides to provide the members with unique logo'd hoodies. Informal presentation held on Thursday 13th January with Leader Candice Assistants Georgina & Jess , and Lion Colin Jones with Guide Group. Colin Jones

Fairtrade News Eye Church Shop – Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11am – 1pm Happy New Year to everyone. We have fair trade fortnight approaching fast (28th Feb – 13th March) and I have some events to tell you about. On Saturday 26th February we will be at Coddenham Church doing our Big Fair Trade Day there. Coddenham really make us welcome, and they do fabulous teas and soup lunches so try to get along there if you can (10am – 3pm). On Saturday 5th March we are at Gislingham Village Hall (10am – 3pm) with a fairtrade sale alongside their regular 2nd hand book sale – again a great event. On Saturday 12th March I am in the corridor entrance of the Co-op in Framlingham alongside others on their fairtrade town committee. And finally in the Church Shop in Eye, we will have 2 fair trade coffee mornings on Wednesdays 2nd and 9th March – this will be our ‘Big Brew’ – a Traidcraft development fundraising initiative. Sadly, my Mum died at the end of 2010, and the shop remained closed while I helped organise her funeral etc until 24th January. She’d lived in Diss for a while (1999 – 2002), and had been very proud of the shops I’ve worked on (Thornham and at Eye Church) – although I don’t think she ever really caught my vision for change through trade, she was proud that I was doing something I really cared about. We have made donations recently totalling £1,500 to the Parish Church (from sales from the Church shop side) and £1,935 to Tree Aid – for a project growing mangoes and Shea nuts in Northern Ghana. Neither of which would be possible without you coming into the shop, or to an event, and buying your fairtrade goodies – please continue to do so in 2011 and together we do make a difference. Harleston Players - A Christmas Carol Our January show this year will be an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. This stage adaptation of Dickens’s most famous story is more faithful to the original than any other published version. It also makes skilful and moving use of traditional carols to underscore the action. This show has been described as “as warming as a glass of mulled wine on a winters day” and “the kind of thrilling, uplifting theatre that really lodges in the heart and mind”. Our large cast brings to life all the well known characters of this tremendous story, Tiny Tim, Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and Mr Fezywigg and his large family, all will bring a smile laugh and even a tear to your eye. Don’t miss this wonderful show. Performances at 7.30pm and Saturday matinee at 2.30pm at the Archbishop Sancroft High School, Harleston. Friday 28 and Saturday 29 January and Friday 4 and Saturday 5 February 2011 Tickets from The Harleston Pet Stores or by phone from 01379 588043 See web site for more details www.harlestonplayers.co.uk

The Stradbroke Charitable Trust The Trustees are pleased to report that the remainder of the legacy from Reggie Elvin - £10,000 - has been donated to Stradbroke Business and Enterprise College as a contribution towards the outside multi surface playing area. This has been completed and we are delighted that it is already being used by the Youth Football teams for regular practice sessions. We hope it will be a real contribution to the facilities available in the village. We have also made a donation towards equipment for the newly formed Guides group and we wish them well. Please note that The Trust is always happy to receive donations or legacies which can be used to benefit the village. Our treasurer, Gerald Jenkins would be pleased to hear from you. Work at Stradbroke Swimming Pool Commences Stradbroke Swimming Pool is about to undergo a significant improvement programme that will see the addition of a purpose built fitness suite and changing rooms to the existing building. The works, which will commence this week, are due for completion in early summer 2011 and will almost double the size of the existing facility. Commenting on the work, Stuart Murdy, General Manager at Stradbroke said, “We are delighted that the plans for the extension to our leisure centre has been given the go ahead and we know that customers will be happy that we are adding to our already successful swimming offer with a fantastic new gym.” Cllr Diana Kearsley, portfolio holder for community services said: "By extending the already excellent facilities at Stradbroke, there will be something for everyone to use when they visit the new and improved Leisure Centre. I look forward to seeing the finished centre when it is up and running."For more information please contact: Claire James or Dawn Lappin at Essence Agency 0161 282 8661 Claire@essenceagency.co.uk or 07890 9227 dawn@essenceagency.co.uk or 07757 082861 Claire James & Dawn Lappin
Digital TV Switchover What will happen? The switchover from analogue to digital TV in the Anglia TV region takes place in July 2011 (for south Suffolk) and November 2011 (for north Suffolk). To keep your TV service, you will need to convert your existing TVs to digital before the switchover date, if you haven't done so already. Cable and satellite services are not affected by the switchover. This does not mean that you will have to get rid of your old set as almost any TV can be converted simply by adding a digital box, even a black and white one, so there is no need to buy a new TV unless you want to. As well as avoiding the unnecessary waste created by replacing a perfectly good TV, converting your existing TV can be a far cheaper way of adapting to the switchover, as digital boxes are available from around £20 though as with actual TVs, prices vary depending on the product. What if my TV cannot be upgraded? If however you are planning to replace your TV, for instance because it no longer works and cannot be repaired, or it is not possible to convert your existing TV to receive the digital signal by the addition of a digital box, try to buy one that is energy efficient - look out for the Energy Saving Trust's 'Recommended' logo. If you still do decide to get rid of an old TV that is in good working order, you could offer it to a friend, or offer it via a reuse network such as Freecycle (http:// www.freecycle.org) or Freegle (http://www.ilovefreegle.org) Alternatively, you can take your old set for recycling, free of charge, to the Household Waste Recycling Centers at Bramford, Brome, Chelmondiston, Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury. You could also ask the supplier delivering your new TV if they have a service for taking the old one away, or you can arrange for Mid Suffolk and Babergh Waste Services to collect it at a cost of £22 (0845 606 6045) Do not dump your old TV – fly tipping is a criminal offence. Sports Roundup
Stradbroke Youth FC U13s - Last year we suffered a few heavy defeats against stiff opposition, particularly in the cup. The last game of 2010 was a 12-2 drubbing by 1st division Tollgate. It was a tough game and both class and fitness showed why we’re in the 2nd division. We started in the this year with a much better performance against top of the league Walsham. We played some excellent football and worked and tackled extremely hard only to lose by the odd goal. This was one of our best performances so far and the lads can hold their heads high. Final result 3 - 2. MotM Anthony Redwood who scored both our goals. Don Darling U10s – We continue to do well and the first game of the new year on 6th Jan was our biggest win (12 – 1) against Stowmarket. The first half was full of events in the opposing team’s goal mouth but we only managed 2 goals. The second half went according to plan and we scored 10 goals – 6 from Jack Smith (MotM). Matthew scored 3, Sammy 2 and Robert 1. The second game against Moreton Hall was a different affair. With a strong wind and a sloping pitch the team had great difficulty getting going. Nevertheless this was a game against the top of the league and the lads worked hard and should be proud of their performance. Lewis in particular pulled off some great saves and was MotM. Our 2 goals came from Jack and Matthew, one in each half. Andrew Knight
Stradbroke Cricket Club I can now see the grass, & the first snowdrop of the year, a sure sign that Spring, & the cricket season is not far away. Much to do before we can contemplate putting on our whites though! Fund raising is doubly vital this year. With the drainage project now signed off, maintenance of the field reverts to the clubs who use the facility & the ‘James Grigg Youth Cricket Trust’ is now a registered Charity so top up funding is needed. To this end, the first fund raising event of 2011 is the Annual Horse Race Evening, to be held at the Community Centre on Saturday 12th February (Details elsewhere). Two more dates for your diary are: Pop Music Quiz @ Community Centre on Saturday 16th April Car Boot Sale @ Playing Field on Monday 2nd May The Suffolk Premier League are organizing a Twenty20 tournament in the Summer. It will be called the ‘James Grigg T20 Cup’. Finals Day will be held at Stradbroke on Saturday 9th July, which will incorporate some fund raising events for the Youth Trust. Details in due course. Pre-season training has started, including new video analysis equipment, bought with a grant secured by Steve & Chris Bacon, which will enable youngsters to watch themselves playing cricket, & improve their game. Stradbroke are one of the few clubs to have access to this kind of coaching aid , another good reason to bring your child to Stradbroke Cricket Club. But perhaps the most encouraging feature is seeing in excess of 20 girls & ladies come to practice on Monday nights. Our dream of fielding a ladies team is one step closer. But we need more. Mothers, daughters, sisters, girlfriends. Come & try. For more details contact Marianne Pierce-Saunderson (Ladies & girls co-ordinator) on 01379-384588. See you at Race Night. Michael Hugman.

Stradbroke Swimming Pool THE WORLD’S BIGGEST FUNDRAISING SWIM
Date: 9Th April Time: 2-5pm Swimmers in Stradbroke will make a splash for charity during the 8-10th April as they complete the Swimathon 2011 challenge at Stradbroke Swimming Pool helping to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Stradbroke Pool is one of over 580 pools taking part nationwide in Swimathon 2011. The world’s biggest fundraising swim is the perfect way to start the New Year on a healthy note. Swimming is proven to be a great form of exercise whatever your ability, relaxing for mind and body, and helps to build endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. By registering for Swimathon before 31 January 2011, swimmers will have longer to train for their 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k challenge and they will also enjoy half price entry. TV presenter and keen swimmer Gail Porter and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew announced this week that Swimathon 2011 entries for were now open. Between 8-10 April 2011 22,000 swimmers will raise more than £2 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Funds will help support Marie Curie Nurses who provide free nursing care to people with terminal cancer and other terminal illnesses, in the place of their choice. Stuart Murdy says: “Swimathon is fantastic as it brings our community together as they raise money for charity, and provides them with a great challenge.” Gail Porter said: “Launching Swimathon this year gives me huge pleasure. The challenge is ideal motivation for everyone to pull on their swimsuits, get in the pool and enjoy a much-needed New Year health boost. I find swimming a great way to keep fit, especially as it’s an activity I enjoy with my child. Going down to your local pool and getting them used to being in the water is just the start of the fun. Once my daughter was up and paddling, there was no stopping us! “What’s more - the money raised will help Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide free nursing care to terminally ill people. I know what a difference this care can make as both my mum and my grandmother died from cancer and received care at home from a Marie Curie Nurse. Caring for a loved one at the end of their life is never going to be an easy time for families but it was made much more bearable for us by the skill and care of these amazing nurses.” Duncan adds: “As we approach a quarter of a century of Swimathons, I’m delighted to report that last year’s event enjoyed an astonishing 38 per cent rise in swimmers, and what’s really exciting is that around 2,500 of those who dived in told us that they only started swimming again because they entered the event. From these grass roots right up to our overflowing international trophy cabinet, it seems that Britain’s love affair with swimming really is back to stay.” Individual and team entries to Swimathon 2011 are open until 6 April 2011. To enter go online to www.swimathon.org or call 0845 36 700 36. For more information Stephanie Cruickshank 01379384376 stephaniecruickshank@slm-ltd.co.uk Claire James

The Inter Village Games come to Stradbroke For the uninitiated, the IVG is an annual event of sporting fun and frolics between a number of villages in about a 10 mile radius of Stradbroke. It is now in its 33rd year and 2011 is the year for Stradbroke to act as the host and organiser of the event. The SAS, a small group of volunteers, took over from David Streeter as the organisers for the Stradbroke team in 2009, and we succeeded in coming first in the competition. Last year however, the opposition were definitely out to make sure we didn’t repeat our previous year’s performance and we were humbled to a lowly 5th position, but never the less everyone who took part had a really enjoyable time. As hosts and organisers of the event this year, we have the flexibility of deciding which events we should include and when and where to hold them. This is the so-called home team advantage, which we plan to make good use of. As a community activity, we would like to involve as many people in the village as possible, both in the form of suggestions for events, helping with the organisation and participating on the day. We will be holding an informal gathering on Feb 15th between 7pm and 9pm, in the Pavilion room of the Community Centre. Why don’t you join us for a drink at the bar and give us your views and suggestions. Hopefully by the end of the evening we will have sufficient input to get the show on the road. For those who haven’t been involved in the Inter Village Games before, we can promise a lot of fun for people of all ages, be they young, not so young, or BPC (bus pass class). The only criterion for getting involved is – you have to live in the parish of Stradbroke. For those of you who have been involved before, we can guarantee that this will be very different from previous years. We see it as a great opportunity for people in the village to come together and not only have a good time, but also show that our win two years ago was no fluke. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in the bar on Feb 15th If you want any further information call Julia( 388855) Don (388098) Sam(388872) Tony (384712) or Dave (388537) Don Darling

Gardeners Notes The new year has brought grey and wet weather which is marginally better than the freezing and snow from before Christmas. So far I haven't noticed too many losses in the garden, but last year most of the damage was done in February. Plants like choisya, bays and hebe are particularly susceptible to frost damage at this time of winter, mainly I believe because the soil is so wet at their feet. If you have any slightly tender plants you are fond of you should cover on a frosty night with a sheet or fleece. I thought this year I would do a little section each month on garden design. I will just be covering the basics and hopefully encourage you to take a new look at your garden. When I am asked to look at a new garden, whether it is a brand new one or an old garden that needs a sort out, I always start at the same place. Firstly, make a simple drawing of the garden, it is best to do this in plan form as this will help you see the shapes of the space. Walk around the garden and list what you want to keep, be it a good tree, plants or terrace, and then list what doesn't work. This list is the most important as I have found that sorting out the problem things in a garden often determines a lot of your final design, this can be hiding an oil tank outside your kitchen window, screening a noisy road, making enough space to park without being able to see the cars too much. All these types of things need to be addressed before you start to think about the pretty things like types of plants. Next you list what new things you want or what you want to change, it may be a new patio, summer house or border. Then go and take as many pictures of the garden as you can, making sure to include nice views that can be improved, problem things and a good view of the whole garden. Digital cameras have made this a lot easier and quicker, normally I just view them straight from the camera. With all this information you go inside and make yourself a cup of tea and set out the information in front of you. Once you have your plan of the garden as it is then make two or three rough versions addressing the good points and bad and adding the things you require. All of the time viewing the pictures to see how changing things will work. When you see it on a photo it sometimes makes it easier than viewing the whole garden. This is just the very starting point of planning a new garden, next month I will cover techniques and ideas for actually making the space work and linking the old and new ideas together. Things to be thinking about and hopefully doing this month. Roses can be pruned from February onwards, don't leave it too late as once they start to shoot it makes it much harder to be brave with the cuts. Always prune to an outward facing bud and slope the cut away from it. A good mulch of compost or well rotted manure at the base will boost the plant for the season ahead. Apple and pear trees need pruning now and as with roses try to open up the centre of the tree so that it has good air flow. I have found at first it looks a bit daunting but once you remove any dead, damaged or diseased wood you step back and make your decisions from a distance so you can see the shape of the tree. If you get in and cut away you will nearly always cut the wrong bit or too much. Tidy borders, raking up the old leaves and cutting back any of last years herbaceous plants ready for them to start this year. If you leave this job too late the bulbs will have started to come up and it makes it much harder. If any clumps of herbaceous plants need splitting now is the time. A good mulch of compost or bark mulch will keep the weeds down and help retain moisture during the summer. There is still time to plant bareroot trees and hedging. Remember if you live anywhere with rabbits or deer you will need to protect them with guards for the first couple of years at least. Any questions please contact me, and be brave and get out in the garden, it can only get better from now on! Happy gardening. Luke Heydon
